With Onasis’ son, Jason, bringing his culinary expertise as a former employer at local restaurants like Compané brick-fired pizza, Lemoncellos, and Fairfield’s, the family is excited to continue the tradition of delicious pizza while adding their own touches.

1. Pruning: Pruning affected branches is often recommended to remove the infected areas and improve air circulation. Be sure to sterilize your pruning tools before and after each cut to prevent spreading the disease further.

Naples Red Mill Past-Present-Future

The Naples Red Mill is a time capsule of 19th Century upstate New York. Built in 1815, the Mill was vital to Naples at the beginning of the mechanized new world, as people harnessed the power of nature to produce the goods needed to sustain life.
e Mill used water from Grimes Glen to transform grain into flour. It became so important in its day that it redefined the location of the Naples Village. It drew settlers from neighboring towns, and it became a meeting place where the news of the day was discussed as folks gathered on its wraparound porches.
Simeon Lyon built the Mill in 1815. irty-five years later, Lyon’s son S.C. Lyon and partners, Watkins, and Story, renovated the Mill using the original structure and foundations.
rough the 1800s, ownership changed several times, and new improvements were made. Steam power was added in 1870, followed by a new waterwheel in 1872, and a general overhaul began in 1881. In 1889, N.W. Clark purchased the Mill and installed a grain roller. B.L. Clark changed the water wheeltoaturbinein1905.
Electricitywassubstituted for waterpower in 1911, and water was forever shut off from the Naples mill race in 1920.
A er its purpose as a functioning mill ended, the building was purchased by Widmer’s Wine Cellars in 1930 and used for storage. In 1965, the winery donated the mill to the Village of Naples, who used it to house outdated highway equipment. According to the Historical Society, “while commerce boomed elsewhere throughout the Naples Valley, the impressive Mill structure, with its locallyhewn wood planks and fieldstone foundation, remained a picturesque reminder of local history and traditions.”
In 1975, Vierhile bought the Red Mill from the town for $2,200, with dreams to convert it into a museum for historical education and made many upgrades and repairs. Filling the building with his own collections, he celebrated the “Grand Opening of Naples Red Mill Museum” in 1980, and occasionally opened the building to the public until 2005. In 2015, Bill generously donated the Naples Red Mill and its contents to the Naples Historical Society in hopes that the organization would continue his vision.
Currently,theRedMillservesasstorageforavastcollection of artifacts and antiques that date back to the early 1800s. Many items define the era of early Naples’ work history and the settlement of early Western New York, such as tools, local signs from the 1800s, carriages, and agricultural implements. Items from the 1900s include memorabilia from the Naples movie theater, built in 1920, which due to an accidental fire, was destroyed in 1961. In short, the Red Mill contains the memories and treasures of the community from its earliest days.
e historical society hopes to restore the mill and create a Naples History and Event Center for all to enjoy. e Society says, “Clearly, Bill did his part to preserve Naples history. Now it’s our turn to step up and take care of this historic village treasure for future generations.” For more information on this project see “Bill’s Dream” on the NHS website www.NaplesNYHistoricalSociety.org.
In the 1970s, Bill Vierhile, Naples Town Historian, was also owner of Vierhile’s Appliance Store on Main St. A collector of historical documents and artifacts, Vierhile once said, “I collect everything.” An active member of Naples Rotary, Curator of Cemeteries for Naples, Vice President of the Ontario County Genealogical Society, member of the Board of the Ontario County Historical Society, and for a short time Village Mayor, Vierhile was also instrumental in launching the first Naples Grape Festival with his brother, Bob, in 1961.

Bisphosphonates Cause Esophageal Disorders To Worsen
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 68-year-old female with osteopenia. My doctor wants me to take a bone medication such as Boniva or Fosamax. I’ve read that folks with esophageal issues may be harmed by taking these. Can you explain why? -- C.M.C.
ANSWER: First off, we don’t usually treat isolated low bone mass (osteopenia) with powerful medicines like the ones you mentioned, which are both bisphosphonates. These medicines have the potential for harm and should only be used when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.
A person with low bone mass and a history of a fragility fracture has osteoporosis, regardless of their bone density. Some people with low bone density may be at such a high risk for fracture (based on their FRAX score) that treatment is indicated. Before treating someone with medication, many authorities recommend a 10year risk of a fracture of 20% or higher (or a risk of a hip fracture of 3% or higher). You should find out your FRAX score.
The issue with the esophagus is that if pills get stuck in the esophagus, they can cause severe damage to it. So, people with esophageal disorders -- such as achalasia, esophageal stricture or varices, or Barrett’s esophagus -- should not take these types of medicines by mouth. People with reflux without these complications can take oral bisphosphonates as long as they can comply with staying upright for 30 minutes after taking them.

Growth plate injuries: Kids Health says growth plates are the areas of growing tissue near the ends of the long bones in the legs and arms in children and adolescents. IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES
Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Shakes” is a “bolter” -- he will bolt out the door and straight into the street if I’m not careful. I worry constantly about him getting lost in the woods nearby. If that happens, what should I do? I feel that lost pets don’t get found very o en. -- Jamie B. in Egypt, Maine
DEAR JAIME: Most dogs who get lost are found and returned to their owners at fairly high rates -- between 81% and 97%, according to a 2012 report. at doesn’t make it any less stressful to their owners, who must scour the neighborhood and put up signs to find their dogs. e statistics for cats are much worse, with only 45% to 72% being returned to their owners. A bunch of things make it harder to find a lost cat: no ID tag, if the cat’s collar breaks away on an obstacle or no microchip. Cat owners wait much longer than dog owners to report their cat missing -- probably because they feel most cats will come home on their own. ose stats aside, Shakes would benefit greatly from being trained not to react when the front door opens. Each day, do about 15 minutes of training with him:
-- Put Shakes on a leash and lead him toward the front door. Command “sit.”
-- Reach out for the front doorknob. If Shakes starts forward, bring your hand back to your side and command “sit” again.
-- Repeat the doorknob reach until he no longer reacts but remains sitting. When he does this, give him a tiny treat.
-- Progress to turning the knob, opening the door and leaving the door open. Shakes should remain sitting for each level to be successful.
