NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Store plastic wrap in the refrigerator, or even the freezer, to keep it from sticking to itself. * “Take your medication tablets on a spoonful of your favorite yogurt! Place the pills on top of yogurt and they slide down. Follow with a second spoonful and smile.” -- A Reader in Pennsylvania * Do you have a screw loose ... in your eyeglasses? This is an easy fix. Paint the screw with a dab of clear nail polish and quickly re-screw. It works like glue. Dab the top of the screw for a little extra insurance.

In addition to serving as a chance to celebrate and reflect on the contributions of our nation’s past presidents, Presidents’ Day has emerged as a day to rest and shop. Stores across the country advertise special prices to tie into the day and capitalize on the three-day weekend. For many retailers, Presidents’ Day is the first major sales opportunity of the new year.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Caffeine, which is found in tea leaves, guarana berries, kola nuts and, of course, coffee beans, acts as a natural pesticide. It overloads the nervous systems of insects that try to eat the plants containing it, paralyzing and even killing them before they can do too much damage. Page 3
* “I purchased a roll of reflective tape to mark our basement stairs. It reflects the light from the open doorway at the top of the stairs, and I can turn the downstairs lights off before heading up. I had some left over, so I put a strip on my dog’s collar. When I let him out at night, I can shine a flashlight and spot him instantly, since the tape is more visible in the night.” -- V.R. in Pennsylvania * If you’re leaving your home for a few days, make sure you don’t turn off the heater altogether. Set it at a low 55 degrees F and open up the cabinets that have pipes exposed. This way, air will circulate, and it won’t get too cold to allow the pipes to burst. Have a neighbor turn your faucets to a trickle if below-freezing weather is expected. * Wrap the metal collar of your paintbrush with masking tape before painting. Then you can peel it off and there’s no stuck-on paint.

Monday, Feb. THROUGH 21st at 11am AT 11AM Monday, Feb. 28th 19 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
More Tips for Finding Out-of-Stock Pet Food DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to respond to Casey H.’s concerns about finding the right pet food in the midst of these supply problems. We and some of our friends have experienced the same shortage. Our cat is on a prescription canned and dry food to treat her cystitis. Eating the wrong food could cause real problems for her. When we went to PetSmart to renew our supply, the shelf was almost empty. We talked to the in-store veterinarian, who said the main problem was a quality issue -the manufacturer had to throw away a huge amount of cat food and start again. That, plus the slowdown in truck deliveries, plus short staffing, are all contributing to this mess. Casey may want to call or email the pet-food company, or talk to the manager of the store that it’s usually purchased from. Another option is to make your own pet food. My mother was a dog breeder for 30 years and she made her own dog food. It’s not an option for us because of our cat’s medical issue, but it may be a solution for others. Your veterinarian can guide you on ingredients, and there are plenty of books with recipes that provide balanced nutrition. -- Colleen R., East Rochester, New York DEAR COLLEEN: That’s great advice! Store managers and the pet food manufacturers themselves can provide more insight when a specific pet food is not available. You can usually find contact information for the manufacturer on the can, bag or box of pet food. Veterinarians also can also help guide you to alternative pet foods, which is especially important when specific formulations are needed. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. Need Help with Transportation? Reach Out to VTC! B Y E L A H A H A S H M AT U L L A H
T
ransportation. Why is it so important? If you do not own a vehicle, then you surely understand the hassle it is to get the appropriate transportation to get you where you need to be. In fact, most of us take transportation for granted, yet for many people who do not possess it, it is a luxury. Thankfully, the time for worry is over because the Volunteer Transportation Center is here to help with just that. The Volunteer Transportation Center Foundation was established in 2018 and received its non-profit status last year. Its mission is to “Provide transportation to health, wellness and critical needs destinations utilizing volunteers and mobility management for anyone who has barriers to transportation.”
The VTCF operates in various counties such as Oswego, Genesee, and others across Western New York. Not only do they help the Western New York communities with transportation, but they also help their counties connect with food sources and help aging citizens with any additional needs they have.
Raymour & Flanigan not only sponsored a Free Games & Crafts Day for the VTC, but they also donated $500!
Having fun at the Raymour & Flanigan Free Games & Crafts Day fundraiser for VTC!
The VTC is volunteer based. This means that anyone with the appropriate qualifications is able to volunteer as a driver and give back to their community by driving their neighbors to their destinations and those in need of transportation. The best thing about this volunteer work is that these drivers “are reimbursed up to standard IRS mileage rate.” This is a great way to give back to local communities, help your neighbors and not be out-ofpocket for your generosity! The Volunteer Transportation Center Foundation is run on donations and charity events such as the Raymour and Flanigan Free Games and Crafts day for VTC that was open for the general public with games and crafts for families and individuals of all ages. Raymour & Flanigan also presented a check for $500 to the organization. The Volunteer Transportation Center holds many other such events for the enjoyment of their communities; everything earned and donated goes towards mileage reimbursement for the volunteer drivers. The sole long-term mission and vision of the VTCF is to ensure the financial stability of the organization and keep its services active and help as many people as possible facing difficulties with accessible transportation.

The organization raises awareness through their detailed website. They are also active on social media, however, the most impactful way to raise awareness for VTC has been through its fundraiser and charity events. Not only will the local community learn more about the organization, but many different agencies will also donate. VTC has received immensely positive feedback from the communities in which it operates. To request transportation, you should call the office in your county between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday. Every person requesting transportation is allowed to bring one companion with them. Please inform your VTC office in advance. Enjoy this article? SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises.

D id You Know ? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Dealing With Empty Store Shelves There’s been a shift in food availability across the country. If your area is just now getting hit with empty store shelves, this concept is shocking and new to you. For those of us who have lived with this for a long time (for over a year in my area), it’s more of the same, but worse now. Here are a few thoughts to help you get through this. Ask your store manager about any missing item. If he says that he’s no longer able to order it, that likely means the item isn’t on the store’s list anymore. In that case, call the manufacturer. You might well discover that they’re no longer making that particular item. If, however, the reply is that he doesn’t know when certain stock will be arriving on a truck, at least there’s hope it will reappear. That’s when you need to be proactive. Team up with a few friends and equip each one with a list of a few must-have items for each person. For one it might be distilled water for a C-pap machine. For another it might be one certain brand of low-sugar canned fruit. Then, when you shop, keep an eye out for those items. If you spot something, make a call and ask if you should pick it up while it’s right there in front of you. If you’re desperate for a particular item you know is in stock, call the store manager and ask for it to be put it at the customer-service counter. If you don’t do this too often, chances are you’ll be accommodated. If your store finally gets a missing item back in stock, don’t hoard. At most, take just one extra if you’ll use it within several weeks. That will buy you a little time if it goes missing again. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
Batavia Ophthalmology
By Keith Roach, M.D.
How Much Popcorn Is Too Much? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I love popcorn, but when you look close there are so many hard hulls! Are they hard on the stomach? Can you eat too much? -- G.P.P. ANSWER: Popcorn has a lot of fiber, include the nondigestible bran of the kernel (also called the hull). Fiber is generally healthy for you, aiding in digestion and making you feel fuller, and foods high in fiber may reduce risk of some chronic diseases. However, too much fiber, especially if your system is not used to it, is absolutely a potential problem. It can cause bloating and gas, and in rare instances can cause an obstruction in the bowel. This is not likely with any reasonable amount of popcorn. Doctors used to think that in people with diverticulosis, which is little outpouchings in the wall of the colon, popcorn could cause diverticulitis (inflammation and infection). However, recent studies have shown this is unlikely. Finally, enjoy popcorn air-popped, without oil or butter or too much salt, for the healthiest option.

HOW TO SUPPORT A LOVED ONE WITH CANCER
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was recently worked up for an autoimmune disease that now seems to be osteoarthritis. I was placed on 10 mg of prednisone for 14 days with amazing relief from my painful shoulder and arms. I am severely allergic to aspirin and do not want to take opioids. The physician has ordered prednisone 2.5-5 mg daily to control symptoms. Is it safe to take this low dose of prednisone daily for pain control? -- M.O. ANSWER: It sounds to me that the physician may not have communicated as effectively as I might have hoped. Osteoarthritis, although a widespread cause of joint pain, is not an autoimmune disease, and it is not treated with prednisone. Instead, it sounds very much like you may have polymyalgia rheumatica. PMR is found in women more often than in men and rarely in people under 50, most commonly in a person’s 70s. Hallmark symptoms are joint pain, especially of the shoulders and upper arms, that is much worse in the morning. PMR also is very sensitive to prednisone 10-20 mg: If it doesn’t respond dramatically to those kinds of doses, it probably isn’t PMR. A laboratory finding, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, is almost always very elevated (92%-94%) in PMR. A different blood test for inflammation, C-reactive protein, is abnormal in 99% of people with the condition. Treatment is low-dose prednisone, usually given at 10-20 mg per day to start, as long as it is controlling symptoms. About half of people will be able to come off of medication after a year or two, but some people continue on treatment for six years or more. Unfortunately, even at these low doses, roughly half of people can develop a side effect due to the steroids, especially cataracts. People on long-term steroids should have careful monitoring of blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol levels, as well as bone density. Alternate treatments that don’t rely on steroids are in development. ***

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
MIND THE GAP: WHAT IS A DIASTEMA? A gap between teeth is called a diastema. While it poses no dental or medical threat, a diastema is sometimes a concern for patients for cosmetic reasons. Most often appearing in young children, a diastema usually closes when permanent adult teeth come in. Spaces that are wider than 0.5 millimeters are considered to be a diastema. Generally caused by the difference between the size of teeth relative to the jaw, the condition is often genetic. A smaller tooth means more space between the teeth, most commonly, the upper lateral incisors, which creates a gap between the front teeth. Gum disease can also be responsible for tooth migration as inflammation damages the bone supporting the teeth.

WASHINGTON INSPIRED PRESIDENTS’ DAY Established in 1800, Presidents’ Day once went by a different name. Known as Washington’s Birthday, which is still the legal name of the holiday, this day was meant to celebrate the first President of the United States, George Washington, whose birthday was February 22. Congress declared that day a federal holiday more than 200 years ago, and eventually the holiday grew to become a celebration of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12, as well. The holiday is now a celebration of the lives and accomplishments of every U.S. president. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features. As w inter w ears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold w eather climates to experience some cabin fever. POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Stripe smut The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

A HAPPY ENDING (NAPSI)—It started out as a normal day for Mary Harrison—until she briefly left her car running outside of her home with her shih tzu Molly in the backseat and went inside for just a second. When she came back outside, however, her car—and Molly—were gone. She called Verizon to see if her phone could help track her car, and a Verizon customer service representative saved the day. “When Mary called in, I was taken aback with her car and dog being stolen,” said the tech expert who answered the call. “I really felt for her. I work at home and my two dogs are at my feet all day.” They pulled up Harrison’s account and saw that she had a Hum by Verizon device in her car. Hum is a vehicle diagnostic system from Verizon Connect. It takes the guesswork out of driving with connected car technology, so you can stay in touch with emergency services and your loved ones on the road. For instance, if Hum detects a crash, it can notify emergency services and send help your way. With Hum’s vehicle diagnostics feature you can check your car’s health from your phone and detect issues before you go. You can also schedule maintenance reminders and Hum will text or e-mail you when it’s time for a tune-up or an oil change. And if your car is stolen, as in Mary’s case, Hum can send your car’s location to local law enforcement. “I knew with Hum there was a lot we could do to help her. I pulled up the step-by-step troubleshooting guide to reset her password and bring up the vehicle’s location on her phone. As soon as she saw the car on her phone, she started to cry.” The car was not far from Harrison’s home. She could have walked there, but the customer service representative advised her to stay safe, call the police, and recover the car together. When Harrison got to the car, her dog was still there, safe inside. “It made me feel great to be able to help her,” the customer service representative said. “I know that if it were my dog in the car, that would be my biggest concern, too. I wouldn’t even care about my car or my stuff, just getting my dog back safely. I was so impressed by how quickly and accurately Hum found her car. It’s awesome that we have this great technology available.” Learn More: For further facts about how helpful Hum can be, go to www. Hum.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

S E V RA Manchester Gateway Trail Shout out to the Village of Manchester and their beautiful trail. The trail is well-maintained all year long and has been a joy for so many this winter season. Thank you for making the trail accessible, especially during the winter months. Even during the recent snow storms, I was able to take my dog for a walk in the woods because of your commitment. Thank you! Service to Drive for! I completely agree with last week's rave for the Valero Gas Station in Avon! The girls that work there are amazing, prompt, and courteous! I am elderly and drive out of my way for their service! Even on the bitterest of cold days, the girls there greet you with a smile! I always tip them, and would feel guilty if I didn't, because they deserve it. After all, they are pumping my fuel, and I have the luxury of sitting comfortably in my car! Good job!
Good Samaritan Award goes to... Roger King: Livingston County coroner, local funeral assistant, state DOT employee, volunteer fireman, husband, dad, and friend. Your attention to detail, your care for the living and deceased, your kind words, your nurturing and kind soul, your ability to act fast and take control of situations, your confidence in doing things, and your ability to do the right thing do not go unnoticed. You are a gentleman; a kind-hearted and empathetic Samaritan to whom most people reading this owe a great deal of thanks. Our communities are safer because of you; they are stronger because of you, and we all are indebted to you for playing an integral part in all of our lives. No amount of thanks could begin to repay you for the sacrifices you and your family make every single day. You are appreciated and respected. I hope you understand how invaluable and indispensable you are! -A grateful community Four Letter Words Not all four letter words are bad. In fact, "good" is a four letter word. The worst four letter word that I can think of is "hate." It is that four letter word which has caused wars: people killing children in churches, streets, and any other place you can think of. There is, however, another four letter word that can defeat the word "hate," and that is the word "love." The Greeks have at least three words for love, and the one I'm referring to is "agape," the concern for the well-being of others.
Blessed & Thankful A huge thank you to the driver of a white car who paid for coffee and a donut at Tim Horton's on February 10th. Not only did you give me a gift, but also the items were being taken to my mom at a nursing home, so your generosity reached two ladies. I will definitely pay it forward, and thank you for reminding me that there are good people in this world.
You should care! I cannot believe that there are some people out there who genuinely think that they shouldn’t care about the environment because it apparently “can’t be controlled.” It absolutely can! In March of 2020 when most of the world was in lockdown, pollution and emissions plummeted, then went back up when lockdown orders were lifted. The environment absolutely can be controlled and changed. Just look at the weather in recent years: tornadoes and 60°F weather in December, snow in May, Siberian temperatures in Chicago. None of that is natural! It’s very ignorant to assume that the planet we all live on isn’t worth caring about because there’s supposedly nothing you can do to take care of it. I’m not saying that the world is going to end if you don’t emulate Captain Planet levels of environmentalism, but at least trying to care about the Earth would be nice!

Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS Make things easy for customers. Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touchless payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contactless payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

SIMPLE WAYS TO BE MORE CHARITABLE
The South Byron Volunteer Fire Co. Inc.
Being charitable is rewarding, not only to those on the receiving end of others’ good deeds but also for those doing the giving.
will hold a public meeting to discuss the purchase of a new fire truck. It will be held at 7389 Rt. 237 South Byron, NY 14557 on March 7th, 2022 at 7:00pm. Due to COVID 19 we will be following social distancing rules.
Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health found participants who chose to donate a portion of money they were provided activated pleasure centers in the brain. Doing something positive can be uplifting, and being charitable helps others in need. Quite often people who engage in charitable works find inspiration through their efforts. That’s because working with a nonprofit group can create opportunities to meet new people, socialize and be surrounded with like-minded individuals. It also may help adults serve as role models to youngsters. Children who see their parents or other adults being charitable may be more likely to be philanthropic when they grow up.
UNIQUE LOCATIONS TO HOST A WEDDING Stadiums: Couples who first bonded over their love of a particular sport and/or favorite team can incorporate that into their nuptials by getting married at a stadium. Professional and collegiate teams typically offer wedding and reception packages, and guests may appreciate the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hang out on the field where their favorite athletes play.
Every little bit counts when being charitable. Philanthropy doesn’t mean donating thousands of dollars or lots of hours volunteering. The following are some relatively easy ways to incorporate charity into one’s life. • Collect change: Place a coin jar near where you put your keys or wallet when entering the house. Empty loose change into the jar and watch it fill up. Use the collected funds to donate to a charitable group. • Round up: When the grocery store checkout clerk asks if you want to round up your purchase to the nearest dollar for charity, opt in. • Become a leader: Volunteer your time as a scout troop leader, coach a sports team or offer free tutoring for students. You’ll be making an immediate difference in the lives of young people. • Charitable consumption: Buy from companies that are involved with cause-related products. Many products are tied to charitable efforts, with a portion of money going directly to nonprofits. • Throw a party: Host a party with a philanthropic theme. Guests can arrive and make a donation or bring a gift that will go to a charitable cause. • Use your hobby: Participate in charity fundraisers that incorporate some of your favorite hobbies. For those who knit or craft, donate or sell your creations for the good of those in need.

WHY BUY LIFE INSURANCE? Facing one’s mortality and the prospect of leaving family members behind is not always easy. Death, financial security and planning for the future are all difficult subjects, but planning ahead can make matters much easier in the long run. Life insurance needs frequently come up when making plans, and many people find that purchasing a life insurance policy is a worthwhile investment. Life insurance holds an important place in overall financial planning. One of the most apparent benefits of life insurance is that it will provide a considerable sum of cash upon the insured’s death, which can be put toward the cost of funeral arrangements, housing and dependent care.
“Youth is happy because it has the ability to see beauty. Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old…” ~ Frank Kafka
Kafka was an Austrian writer who was only 40 years of age when he died in 1924. He may, therefore, have been overly enthusiastic about the advantages of youth. However, his thought merits attention. If we develop the habit of looking for beauty in everything, we might be surprised at the various places where beauty manifests itself and how often we can find it. This may not keep us from growing old but it should at least make growing old more enjoyable. Families of all faiths and creeds can be certain of fully appropriate services when they put their trust in us. Our many years of experience enable us to anticipate every need.
Jeff Deragon
Alhart Funeral Home
Beyond end-of-life bills and care, life insurance can offer other advantages, say the experts at Allstate Insurance Company. Life insurance can provide a family with a financial safety net. When a beneficiary is named, life insurance can serve as an inheritance for that person or people. Heirs may face estate taxes after a loved one dies, and life insurance benefits may help offset all or a portion of the costs. There may be benefits to life insurance while a person is living as well. The life insurance information site Term Life 2 Go says that, depending on the policy, life insurance can be borrowed against to pay off debt, buy a house or live off of dividends from the life insurance investment. This can provide a source of supplemental retirement income. Gateway Financial advisors say that many life insurance plans are extremely flexible and can be modified as needs change. Death benefits may be decreased if desired, and premiums can be skipped, reduced or increased. Business owners also can use life insurance policies to their advantage. Including life insurance with the list of other benefits offered to prospective employees can entice top-notch candidates. Sole proprietors may use life insurance as a business continuation plan so that insurance proceeds can keep the business in the black until it is sold or a replacement owner is found. Shopping for life insurance requires careful research and an understanding of the products available. Consumers should have a thorough understanding of term and whole life policies, what premiums will cost, what the death benefit will pay, and if there are any living benefits. FACTS ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON Few Americans would be hard pressed to identify George Washington’s visage, which is depicted on some American currency, including the $1 bill. Born in 1732 to Virginia planters, Washington’s interests included western expansion, which he was able to take part as a teenager, helping to survey the Shenandoah lands at the age of 16. Washington was also interested in military arts, and he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in 1754, eventually playing a role in what became the French and Indian War. In 1759, Washington was serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses, an assembly of elected representatives of the English colonies in North America. Growing frustrated with and feeling exploited by British regulations, Washington voiced his resistance to restrictions placed on colonists, who were moving toward what would become the American Revolution. At the Second Continental Congress, which assembled in 1775, Washington was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, taking command of troops at Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 3, 1775. Under Washington’s command, the Continental Army would ultimately succeed, winning the colonists their independence from British rule. In 1787, Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, where the new Constitution was ratified. Within two years Washington was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States. Though the current two-term limit was not law at the end of Washington’s second term, he chose to retire from the Presidency anyway, leaving office in 1797. He would retire to his Virginia home at Mount Vernon, where he still engaged in various business dealings. Within three years of his retirement, however, Washington would fall ill of a throat infection that ultimately took his life on December 14, 1799. In addition to providing the inspiration for Presidents’ Day, Washington’s legacy is that of a hero who led an army of colonists to a victory over a dominant empire. The Washington Monument and Mount Rushmore are two of the more notable monuments honoring the first President of the United States. In addition, the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. is so named in honor of George Washington.
