DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT IRISH CULTURE The Irish are not enamored with leprechauns. Come St. Patrick’s Day, leprechauns are purported to be mischief makers who can rev-up the fun. But within Ireland, the only places you’re liable to find leprechauns is in tourist gift shops. In fact, while the origins of leprechauns may date back to ancient Ireland, many people now believe the image of the fighting, illtempered leprechaun is offensive to the Irish people.

Hi, I’m Mom and dad adopted me last year. I am exactly one year old this month. I’m still crazy because my puppy pants still fit, and I love to put everything in my mouth, especially the cat...but it’s all out of love and play. If you see me around the neighborhood, just say hi! I am a bit shy, but I love everyone.

Dog Goes on Strike Against Leashes DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Perry” tugs, fights and whines when I put a collar and leash on him. He will even flop down and refuse to move. I don’t know what to do. -- Mike D., Roanoke, Virginia

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

PAW’S CORNER

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits. Missing springtime is like missing a woman. You never really noticed her and then she was gone, and all that she was returns and makes the separation even more painful. I think I read this somewhere. “Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.”

DEAR MIKE: Oh, that’s frustrating! But you can help Perry to tolerate his collar and leash by making some adjustments and rebuilding a positive association with the leash. Here are a few tips to start with: * Check the fit and comfort of Perry’s collar. Sometimes owners buy stylish collars that look great on their pet but are uncomfortable and either too big or too small. * Consider a chest halter instead of a collar. This provides a supportive fit and when you tug on the leash, pressure is distributed around a dog’s torso rather than its neck. * Re-introduce Perry to the new collar or halter gradually. Show him the new gear while offering a treat at the same time. When he’s eating, gently drape the leash over his back. Give lots of praise at the same time. This starts to create positive connections with the new gear. * Conduct obedience training at home, in 10-minute sessions, while Perry wears the new collar or halter. Review basic commands of “come,” “sit,” “stay” and “lie down.” Leave the leash off at first. * Add the leash, but don’t tug on it. Continue obedience training while Perry wears the new gear. Take the gear off when done. * Gradually increase the time your dog wears the collar or harness and leash. This will take patience, lots of love and encouragement. Always be positive with Perry while retraining to the leash. And if, despite these efforts, he still doesn’t respond, contact a professional trainer to help you both get through this stuck spot. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE POSES TO AGRICULTURE Flooding: The Union of Concerned Scientists notes that many agricultural regions of the United States have already experienced increased flooding. The effects of flooding on the agricultural sector are often devastating and include accelerated soil erosion, water pollution and damage to infrastructure that challenges farmers’ ability to get food from their farms to stores and, ultimately, consumers’ dinner tables.

Our practice philosophy has always been to deliver exceptional dentistry and service, and a welcoming atmosphere to our patients. Serves 4 4 slices country bread 2 peaches Extra-virgin olive oil for brushing 1/4 pound blue cheese, gorgonzola or Blue Castello cheese Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes. While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact. When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread one-fourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve. OATKA EDITION

POLL Some say the United States should not send troops into the Russia-Ukraine conflict because allegedly Ukraine is of strategic importance to the United States, many Americans do not want a war, and the danger of a superpower confrontation. Considering the fragile state of Ukraine and in light of the already senseless loss of life with further atrocities expected from the Russian military, should the United States become involved militarily to defend Ukraine? • Yes! • No!

Can you connect the transmission message from one of Alexander Graham Bell’s telephones to the other? Make sure they can send the message to each other!

Bell studied the human voice and worked with various schools for the deaf. Bell experimented with sound, working with devices such as a ‘harmonic telegraph’ (used to send multiple messages over a single wire) and a ‘phonautograph’ (used to record sound). He worked on acoustic telegraphy with his assistant, an electrical designer named Thomas Watson. Bell’s #irst words with the working telephone were spoken to his assistant Watson and were along the lines of “Mr Watson, come here. I want to see you.”

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Rebuilding Lost Muscle A show of hands: How many of us feel that we’ve lost muscle strength during the pandemic? Unfortunately, the answer is that many of us have, and we’re going to have to fight to get it back. There we were, with regular workout and walking routines, on top of all our other daily activities. Along came COVID and its “stay home” restrictions. There were no more early morning walks at the mall, no more visits to the gym for weight training, no more workout or dance classes ... not even any Tai Chi at the senior center. And there went our muscle mass. Getting back to where we were is going to be tough ... but we need to try. Here are a few thoughts on rebuilding our muscle strength: • Look to YouTube for exercise videos designed for seniors. You’ll find thousands: seated exercises, workouts at home, walking workouts, low impact, beginners and so many more. • Sit in a kitchen chair and stand up. Sit down again. Stand up. Repeat 10-12 times. • Invest in hand weights (order them from Amazon and they’re delivered right to your door). Don’t kid yourself and assume you’re ready to wield a pair of 10-pound weights. Start small with 2-pound weights. If you need to order heavier ones, again, be cautious and don’t jump up more than 1-2 pounds. Try increasing the number of repetitions day by day. If necessary, use 1-gallon plastic jugs (one in each hand), partially filled with water, as weights. • If you have stairs in your home, use them to help your leg muscles. Increase the number of times you go up and down each day. Take it easy, especially at the beginning, but be persistent. Some of us are going to have to fight hard to rebuild the muscle mass we’ve lost. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

How t o prot ect your car’s resale value

Properly m aint ained headlight s vast ly im prove driver saf et y Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

Keep a clean interior. New car ow ners typically maintain some strict rules w ith regard to food and beverages in their vehicles. After all, no one w ants their brand new car to succumb to stains or spills. But the longer drivers have a car the more lax they tend to become w ith regard to allow ing food and drinks into their cars, and that can ultimately hurt the resale value of the vehic le. M aintain a clean interior w hether you just bought the car or have driven it for a few years. M uch like an impressive exterior leaves a lasting impression, a clean interior that has not succumb to coffee stains or muddy boots is more likely to impress buyers than a car w ith an interior that has seen better, cleaner days.

Winter Driving Tips • Keep your tires ‘aired up’: For every 10 degree Fahrenheit change in outside tem perature, your tire’s inflation pressure w ill change by about 1 pound per square inch (psi). Im properly inflated tires can lead to poor traction, decreased control and skidding. • Slow ly accelerate and decelerate: Applying engine pow er slow ly to accelerate is the best m ethod for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don’t try to get m oving in a hurry, and take extra care and tim e to-slow dow n w hen stopping. • Invest in a set of dedicated w inter tires for your vehicle: Winter tires are specifically designed to provide im proved traction in cold, snow y and icy conditions. Whether your vehicle is front, rear or all-w heel drive, w inter tires can offer an additional elem ent of perform ance to get you through those tricky w inter driving m onths. • Check your tread to beat the snow : Worn or insufficient tread can cause skidding during the w inter season, so it is im portant to m ake sure your tires are ready for the w inter conditions before hitting the road. A quick w ay to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are sm all raised bars that run in-betw een a tire’s tread blocks. When a tire’s tread is w orn dow n to these indicator bars, it’s tim e to change to a new set of tires. AUTOMOTIVE

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Turmeric Supplements Safe to Try for Arthritis ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read about turmeric for osteoarthritis. I’m on a limited income. Please tell me more about it, like how much it costs and where I can get it. -- W.C. ANSWER: Turmeric, a spice that has been used for millennia, is the source of curcumin, which has been shown to improve symptoms of osteoarthritis, at least in short-term studies. It is generally thought to be safe, as most people have no side effects or only occasional stomach upset, nausea or diarrhea. A theoretical concern is bleeding, in combination with anticoagulants, but this appears to be rare. I have had many patients try curcumin, and it has improved symptoms in about half of those who tried it. Turmeric is easy to find at any grocery store, but when curcumin is used as a supplement, it is usually combined with other supplements to help with absorption. A common one is piperine, derived from black pepper. It’s difficult to use turmeric from food to get a pharmacologic effect. The usual dose is 400-500 mg two or three times daily. A month’s supply from a reliable online retailer I found cost about $10.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Racoon eyes may be a side effect of forgetting to remove mascara and other eye makeup before retiring for bed. In such instances, dark eye circles are easily remedied with cleaning pads. For those whose dark circles can’t be swept away with soap and water, dark, puffy eyes can be a cause for embarrassment or concern. Dark circles under the eyes may be a byproduct of various circumstances. Getting to the root of the problem can help women (and men) look more awake and fresh.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has psoriasis on his hands, and he thinks it’s from stress. He had psoriasis a long time ago, and now it reappeared. He is stressed because I am sick. Please tell me what cream he can use. Before, he used some good Yugoslavian cream called Vipsogal. -- M.A.M. ANSWER: Psoriasis is a common skin condition thought to be caused by abnormalities in the immune system. There are several forms, but most people with psoriasis notice plaques or papules on the skin. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the psoriasis, but the important part is that it needs evaluation before treatment, both to determine the correct diagnosis and assess severity. This includes at least a joint exam for psoriatic arthritis and a careful history to look for other associated conditions, such as in the eye. Severe disease may need systemic therapies, including biological ones. I looked up Vipsogal and it is a combination of several medicines, especially high-potency steroids. These are the mainstay of treatment for most people with mild to moderate psoriasis and are available in the U.S. and Canada only with a prescription. It’s a powerful medicine with the potential for real harm if used incorrectly. Your husband should see a dermatologist. ***

THE DEAL ON SEALANTS Aside from daily oral hygiene practiced at home, another option for tooth protection is a dental sealant. This thin, protective coating is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, stopping cavity formation and preventing the early stages of decay. Sealants keep bits of food, bacteria, and acids from settling on the teeth by creating a barrier that protects the teeth’s surface. Sealants have been shown to reduce decay in molars up to 80 percent, which is especially advantageous for children, although adults benefit as well. Early application to molars, especially when they first erupt, can keep teeth cavity-free and help avoid costly future dental treatments. Dental health professionals can determine if sealants will benefit their patients.

One of our basic philosophies at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is that our patients must recognize the need to take charge of their dental health and do what is necessary to prevent, arrest, or control their own dental conditions. We’ll work together as a team with you to achieve the long-term benefits that quality dentistry affords. From advice about sealants to routine well visits to major dental reconstructions, we’ve got your dental needs covered. Treating both children and adults, our office is located at 6 Batavia City Centre. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. P. S. In some cases, filling cavities can cost four times as much as dental sealants.

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Repetitive use activities: Swimmers, tennis players, pitchers, and quarterbacks may experience something called a repetitive use injury. This is pain in an area of the body that is used over and over again. Inflammation of muscles and tendons may appear, but repetitive use injuries also may result in stress fractures, which the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases defines as hairline fractures in bones that are subjected to repeated stress. Rest between exercises can help alleviate these types of injuries. Ice, compression, elevation and immobilization may be used if pain is persistent.

HOMETOWN HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Check for leaks and plug any you find. Homes may develop air leaks over time, and such leaks allow air to infiltrate the home. W hen that occurs, homeow ners instinctively turn up the thermostat in w inter to combat the cold air getting in. Come summertime, those same homeow ners w ill run their air conditioners on a higher setting in an effort to stay comfortable w hen hot air is creeping through the cracks. Rather than adjusting the temperature inside, fix any sources of air infiltration you find. Run your hand along doorw ays and w indow s to determine if any drafts are coming through. Older homes may also develop cracks in bricks, around the foundation and in siding or stucco. Seal any areas w here you feel air infiltrating your home, w hich w ill save money, reduce your energy consumption and make your older home more efficient.

As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Stripe smut The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. HOMETOWN PHOTOS Shifting Perspectives I used to dismiss when adults told me to slow down driving through neighborhoods. Now I’m in my 30s with young children and can’t help wanting to install speed bumps for the teenagers in our neighborhood. My wife thinks I’m crazy, but going 40+ Mph in suburbia is too fast!

S E V RA Kudos for Hard Work Kudos to Kate and her staff at Dollar General in LeRoy. With her guidance, together they brought the store from an unsafe mess to a store that’s clean, stocked, and a pleasure to shop in. This store was in very bad shape, and they have worked very hard. Thank you, and know you are appreciated. Auto Repair Super Powers! Hats off to Michael Kurzawski, the owner of Four Seasons Collision shop in Brockport. This guy embodies integrity and good will. I took my Subaru over to Mike’s shop. (He doesn’t know me at all.) I asked about a “popped out fender” on my car. He took a look at it and within minutes knew exactly how to fix it, and he did. He wouldn’t take any money, and even graciously refused a tip. What a guy! As we continue to make an effort to support local retailers, let’s remember Mike when you need auto body repairs. He’s the real deal. Thanks Mike! - Ray in Brockport. Fire Dept. I wish to express how very impressed I am with the Springwater Fire Department. Their prompt action and experience which they portrayed for neighbors manifested in sincere community service. It undoubtedly saved a home from being reduced to ashes by morning. Thank you to all the persons and responders for your service. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Ukraine I am so sad for the poor people of the Ukraine. How horrible to wake up one day to have a ruthless dictator decide to take over your country! A peaceful, democratic land that had been co-existing with every country, including Russia, is now forced to fight and, for many, to flea their beloved homes. Too bad the sanctions that Putin is incurring aren’t harsh enough to dissuade him from this senseless aggression. Perhaps in time, NATO will be able to “peacekeep” for the sake of all. Until then, pray for the Ukrainians! Don’t Polute! Littering is very bad. To see bottles, cans, cups, paper, cigarette butts, and more strewn about makes me feel sad. We must prevent litter from getting on the ground before it is found. Children should draw or write a page describing a beach or park filled with litter compared to those which are clean. To litter is very mean.

* Sometimes, despite the cold weather outside, we’re still looking for an icy treat inside. In my family’s dessert experiments, we’ve come up with some doozies, but here’s one you may not have tried: If you put popsicles in the blender, the creamy result tastes just like yummy sherbet. -- JoAnn * If your lunchbox could be fresher, here’s a tip from S.W. in Texas: Spray a piece of bread with vinegar and zip it up in your lunchbox overnight to clear out smells. * “You don’t need to buy a special brush to get at high ceilings and skylights: Simply cover a broom with a pillowcase to clean cobwebs off the ceiling. To clean a skylight, cover a mop with a double layer of paper towels or newspaper, and secure with clips. Spray the paper with window cleaner and heft it up!” -- M.E. in Arkansas * “Here are two more uses for orange peels: Remove all labels and hard parts of the peels. Toss orange peels in a quart Mason jar. When full, fill with vinegar and set in warm place for two weeks. Strain into spray bottle, then discard peels. Makes an excellent disinfectant and ant killer. Or, dry orange peels. When crisp-dry, break into pieces and toss in a blender, then blend to a powder. Put in airtight container to sprinkle on fruit salads or use for orange zest.” -- B.C. in New Hampshire * Pinprick hole in your rubber glove? Put the glove on and paint the hole with nail polish. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

Mondays & Thursdays: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Website: http://www.caledoniaapartments.com

Life for each of us is certain to consist of both pleasant and unpleasant things. We wish we were free of all the unpleasantness which could be anything from an unfortunate physical characteristic to our economic circumstances or other attribute over which we have no control. We could go through life in bondage to this situation, avoiding it as much as possible. Or, we can free ourselves by facing up to the facts and recognizing that we must simply live through it.... and then refuse to worry about it! By making all their own funeral arrangements themselves, well in advance of need, many people achieve peace of mind. There are other advantages, too. Ask our staff to explain... no obligation.

Churchville-Chili Students Use Talent and Hard Work to Support Willie Bee Foundation BY AMANDA PULEO

S

tudents in Churchville-Chili High School’s Functional Life Skills class got back in the game this year after two years off due to the pandemic – renewing their annual tradition of handcrafting holiday decorations to raise money for a community organization. This time around, they chose to support the Willie Bee Foundation, a nonprofit that benefits local families with a child facing life-threatening illness, donating almost $600 in cash and gifts. In addition, they donated 60 pairs of socks, purchased with funds from their United Saints Café coffee cart business, to the Open Door Mission.

Students delivered 60 pairs of new, soft white socks to Rochester’s Open Door Mission.

“Since the holiday craft projects began in 2005, the Life Skills class has raised over $12,945 for charity,” said teacher Margaret Brongo. “Students are thankful to our supportive customers, who are members of our district educational community. Our crafters love the fact that their work and creativity can make a difference in the lives of others. The students take this very seriously and faculty members look forward to backing the project every winter.” The 2021 holiday season saw the group fulfilling orders for 117 white sock snowmen, filled with rice and decorated with colorful scarves, pom-poms, buttons and happy faces. Ultimately, $593.98 was donated to their charity of choice, the Willie Bee Foundation https://www.thewilliebeefoundation.org. The organization was founded in 2017 by Clay and Christine Beeman, who lost their son to cancer. Christine teaches English at Churchville-Chili High School. Over the past 16 years, Life Skills classes have crafted a variety of charming elves, mice, penguins, reindeer and polar bears from socks and rice. Proceeds from the project have gone to Golisano Children’s Center, Ronald McDonald House, American Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Honor Flight, Make a Wish, Lollypop Farm, The American Red Cross and the School of the Holy Childhood, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Camp Smile, The Dream Factory, Gigi’s Playhouse and Homesteads for Hope.

“The holiday craft project is the perfect opportunity to apply the skills we learn and practice in the classroom,” said Brongo. “Most of the orders this year were taken online, but students still learned interpersonal communication skills, like greeting customers and delivering orders. They learned how to measure rice for the filling, and practiced writing and replying to emails. They also used soft skills needed for employment, like following directions, getting along with coworkers and exercising quality control.” In addition to the annual holiday craft, students also practice vocational and interpersonal skills through the classroom’s coffee cart business: taking orders and delivering hot chocolate and coffee to staff and teachers at the high school. Running this small business gives students the chance to interact with customers, handle money, manage inventory and build confidence. The Unified Saints Café has been sidelined since the beginning of the pandemic, but everyone is hoping it will start again soon. Enjoy this article? Find something to truly engage in. Professionals who truly enjoy their work tend to be fully engaged, so it’s no surprise if such individuals have a hard time adjusting to retirement. Some may suggest volunteering can help fill the void created by retirement, but researchers with the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College have found that only those individuals who are truly engaged in their post-retirement volunteering enjoy the psychological benefits of such pursuits. So before retirees dive right in to volunteering as a means to creating structure, they should first exercise due diligence and find an opportunity they’ll find genuinely engaging.
