Day camp: Day camps provide much of the structure of school without all the homework or time spent indoors. Many parks and recreation departments run summer day camps for kids. Camps can be generalized or specialized. HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE

For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook fromcoldtocozywithafewsimple DIY solutions.

The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can beinadequateinolderhomes.Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners andprofessionalsalikerecommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or adepthof16inches.

A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

Control mold when using air conditioning

Mold can grow in any dark and damp spot, which makes air conditioning units prime locations for mold proliferation. Mold spores can be circulated through a home via a central air conditioning system or window air conditioning unit. Mold spores in the air are very easy to inhale, especially for young children and elderly people.

Air conditioners also are susceptible to mold growth. Preventing mold from becoming a problem means being in tune to indicators that mold may be present, and then taking the necessary actions to eradicate that mold and preventing future growth.

Visible mold or a musty smell when operating the air conditioner are prime indicators of a problem.

And remember, when we do get a gully-washer, most of that rain runs off before it can percolate into the soil. Sometimes the best measure of moisture is to stick your finger in the soil and judge by feel.

Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER

Stop cooling an empty home. A cool home might be the ultimate necessity during summer heat waves, but there’s no reason to cool a residence when no one is home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, operating thermostats more efficiently can help homeowners trim their cooling costs by as much as 10 percent. One way to be more efficient with thermostats is to keep the house warmer than normal when no one is home. Programmable thermostats can be set so air conditioning units turn on shortly before residents arrive home, ensuring the house is comfortable and no energy is wasted.

Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Yesterday, we had a pretty big thunderstorm roll through. My 8-year-old cat, Sphinx, is normally never afraid of anything. But for the rst time, he hid underneath the sofa, and even a er the storm passed he stayed underneath the co ee table and wouldn’t come out. Why would he suddenly be afraid when he wasn’t before? -- Claire A., Utica, New York

DEAR CLAIRE: A sudden change in behavior may warrant a trip to the veterinarian. is can rule out any physical causes for the change in behavior, such as a silent infection or a chronic condition.

Cats may seem aloof and resilient to us, but they are actually creatures of habit -- much more so than dogs, who thrive on applied structure, like walks at the same time each day. Cats develop their own daily routine: when they eat and drink, when they “patrol” the house, where they sleep at di erent times of the day.

Any change in that routine can be very upsetting to them, but most still won’t let you know it. (Some will -- they might turn their back on you, meow incessantly, or even, when deeply aggrieved, leave a special present right where you can nd it.)

Observe Sphinx as much as you can, and think about any changes to the home. Did you recently rearrange furniture or install new ooring? Did a family member leave or did a new person move in?

To reduce his anxiety, spend more time playing with Sphinx. When a storm rolls in, place one of your favorite old shirts next to him wherever he is hiding. Speak to him calmly during the storm. If his anxiety doesn’t improve, or begins to get worse, talk to his veterinarian about temporarily giving him anti-anxiety medication.

One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

Whose decision was it to close a downtown major bank’s ATM? This has been an ideal location for all bank customers, downtown shoppers, travelers, and especially for walkers - not everyone drives a car. Really, how much time and how much employee expense is there to maintain this convenient service? This bank also made a big mistake by closing their drive thru. It would have been an asset to provide a drive-thru service during the Covid outbreak. I will sincerely consider another bank’s services located downtown.

A Roller’s Rant To All The Walkers Out There

I had an accident a couple years back and I’m now paralyzed from the waist down. I have a modified truck and it requires me to park in a van accessible parking spot or a handicap spot with cross-hatched stripes. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to wait for someone to come out and move their vehicle. Why should I wait when it’s illegal to park there? You can walk, I can’t. Use your legs! Also [local business] repaved their parking lot, and the only van accessible parking spot is for the employee of the month! What’s up with that? So I made my own parking spot right in front where all the cross-hatched lines are. I’ve spoken with the head of security as well as the Vice President and they assured me they’d take care of it. That was over 4 months ago!

Union Army Sharpshooter

My previous article in the Penny Saver described the heroic career of Brockporter Milo Starks in the American Civil War. is one reports on the success of Brockporter John Tyler Farnham in recording what may be the most complete account of the life of a Union Army soldier.

Farnham lived on the corner of College and Utica Streets in Brockport. His father was a physician. At the time he enlisted in the 1st New York Sharpshooters out of Rochester in August 1862, John was a twenty-year-old printer employed by the weekly Brockport Republic.

Farnham wrote seven diaries during his military service. One is missing. I transcribed the surviving six and published them in a book, e Life of a Union Army Sharpshooter. ey covered 850 days of military service. Farnham wrote diary entries on 848 days. All entries are substantial. Also, the Brockport Republic published over y long letters by him from the front. I included them in the book when they did not duplicate his diary entries. He also wrote some 600 letters home that have not survived.

Farnham was frail and sickly. At times, he was so weak that o cers carried his ri e for him. Nevertheless, he was resourceful, gregarious, and popular. In his diaries, he names 108 friends in the service and 156 at home.

He subscribed to three newspapers and several magazines, attended 23 plays and six concerts, and read 22 books. He campaigned aggressively for Lincoln’s re-election in 1864, befriended a middle-aged couple of freed slaves, taught them to read, and helped build a school for them. Farnham met President Lincoln and was a near witness to his assassination.

In his diaries, Farnham records a wide variety of military experiences. He describes training, battles, skirmishes, long marches, and encampments. He was con ned in a hospital, organized a library for it, and cared for other patients. He clerked in the headquarters of the Iron Brigade and at the Adjutant General’s o ce in Washington. His diaries paint a detailed picture of the lives of ordinary soldiers, their food, living conditions, relations between o cers and enlisted men, their ordeals, triumphs, and tragedies.

Farnham was discharged in June 1865 and returned to Brockport and his occupation as a printer. He seems to have had a romantic relationship with Mary A. C. French, who lived at 82 Park Avenue. His diaries report that he wrote seventy letters to her. Apparently, that romance continued a er his discharge, but did not lead to marriage, perhaps because of his illness.

Farnham died of tuberculosis four years a er his discharge at the age of 27. All of his employers published highly laudatory obituaries. He is buried in the Morton Cemetery in the Town of Kendall beneath a beautiful mountain ash tree alongside his brother, Charles, who died of disease in the service. Mary French never married or had an occupation, though she lived until 1917.

High Blood Pressure

Readings Call for Additional Medication

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old female who was diagnosed with high blood pressure at 32. I am 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weigh 130 pounds. I’ve been taking 240 mg of verapamil for all of these years. A few years back, my medication started coming in 120-mg dosages, so I started taking one in the morning and one at night. My blood pressure both at home and at the doctor’s office is often higher than I think it should be, averaging 138/88. Recently, I used a 24-hour blood pressure monitor, which showed that more than 50% of my daytime readings were above 140/90, while my nighttime readings averaged 118/82. I am still waiting to hear back from my doctor regarding the results of this test, but I wanted to get your thoughts. Should I be on some other type of medication? Should I alter the timing to get better daytime readings? -- E.T.

ANSWER: In my opinion, these readings are not ideal. Twenty-four-hour, ambulatory blood pressure readings are usually 5 to 10 points lower than office blood pressure readings, so your average daytime readings are correspondingly higher. There is strong evidence that in people at high risk for heart attack (such as those who are already known to have blockages), controlling blood pressure to an average of less than 120 systolic (the first or top number) and less than 70 diastolic (the second or bottom number) reduces risk. It’s not as clear for people who are at a lower risk, such as people who have high blood pressure without any additional risks. In my own practice, however, I will usually try to get my patients close to those optimal numbers, as long as the medication does not cause side effects. In a situation like yours, I would consider additional daytime medicine. More verapamil might be reasonable, but many doctors might use a different medication, such as a diuretic, in the morning to try to get the optimal blood pressure with less risk of side effects. Very often, the choice of blood pressure medication depends on any other medical issues a person may have. Only your doctor knows enough about your medical condition to make a personalized recommendation.

CRACKED OR FRACTURED TEETH

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES

Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields.

Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented.

Numerous studies have found that vacationing produces a host of health benefits. The ongoing Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948 and is currently studying its third generation of participants, found that men who did not take a vacation for several years were 30 percent more likely to have heart attacks than men who took time off. In addition, the FHS found women who take a vacation only once every six years or less were nearly eight times as likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack as women who vacation at least twice per year. Vacations also have been linked to lower stress levels, as a study from the American Psychological Association concluded that vacations reduce stress by removing people from activities and environments that are the sources of their stress. Vacations can even benefit employers, as an internal study from the professional services firm Ernst & Young found that employees’ year-end performance ratings improved by 8 percent for each additional 10 hours of vacation time they took.

GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY

Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished.

Organizationcanhelpprofessionalskeeptrackoftheirworkassignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity.

Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of peopletheydubbed“supertaskers”werecapableofmultitaskingwithout adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once.

Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed.

Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week.

Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks.

Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.
