DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.
* On July 23, 1888, Raymond Chandler, creator of detective Philip Marlowe, is born in Chicago. During the Depression, Chandler began writing to support himself. He published “The Big Sleep” in 1939, followed by “Farewell My Lovely” and “The Long Goodbye.” * On July 25, 1898, during the Spanish-American War, U.S. forces launch their invasion of the island of Puerto Rico. With only seven deaths, U.S. troops under Gen. Nelson Miles were able to secure the island by mid-August. * On July 26, 1943, Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger is born in Dartford, Kent, England. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Cat Owner Defends Free-Range Felines
--DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As an owner of six indoor cats, I would like to respond to your recent article (“Cats shouldn’t get free pass to poop”). In the past two years we have had to pay over $300 for damage done by chipmunks to our car. We cannot have a raised garden here due to rabbits, groundhogs, deer and chipmunks. When my cats used to be outdoors, I saw very few birds killed by them. Generally, it was mice and moles. My cats would kill snakes and scare off the squirrels. I brought my cats indoors because of coyotes in the area. Also, one of my cats was attacked by a neighbor and had to be put to sleep. If there were no cats, you would be totally overrun by mice and rats. How would you like that? I suggest that you print this letter, that you do not shorten it, that you apologize for what you said about cats and that you think twice before you put something like this in writing again. Thank you. -- Debra in West Virginia DEAR DEBRA: I will apologize ... for shortening your letter, as we have limited space. You raise many good points based on your personal experience. Cats do keep many rodents at bay, because they are incredibly good hunters. But they are at grave risk being outdoors, from coyotes, from feral cats carrying diseases and from humans who do evil, foul things. The article that offended you raised many good points about the damage that outdoor cats can do to neighbors’ property, and the danger they pose to small creatures. I’m glad you’re keeping your cats safe indoors. Doesn’t your experience prove the point that cats are safer inside?

In 1961, at the age of 18, Jon Barefoot set out to start a business. Having worked with his father, James Barefoot, who owned a water pump business since 1946, Jon decided to start an excavation business. He found his niche in digging trenches for water lines and excavating for septic tank installations. In 1971 Jon bought a septic pumping business from his Caledonia neighbor, Seth Powell, and the rest is history. Jon managed to create a business that combined his love of working with the dirt with his passion for problem solving and helping people. Jon Barefoot considers it an honor to have had the opportunity to wake up and go to work for the last 21,900 days (and counting) to serve his friends, his community, and his customers.

M otorists routinely check their tires for proper inflation, top off engine fluid levels and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand the importance of keeping engine air filters clean. Engine air filters are a relatively inexpensive vehic le part, but they perform a very important job. For every gallon of gas a c ar burns, it uses the equivalent of 12,000 gallons of air, and that air must be filtered to help keep an engine clean. Air filters catch all of the dust, grime, insects, sap, leaves, and any other debris that may get sucked up past the air intake of the vehicle’s grill and into the engine itself. W ithout the air filter, those c ontaminants may compromise the engine, causing corrosion and abrasion. If the air filter in the engine becomes too dirty and is not changed regularly, the engine is starved of air. Clean air filters allow just the right ratio of air to fuel to enable the engine to function properly. Engines need adequate air for the c ombustion proc ess to take plac e. W ithout the proper c ombustion levels, vehic les c annot perform properly or efficiently and the engine may burn more gas or get few er miles to the gallon. A dirty filter also c an rob an engine of pow er. Drivers may notic e sluggish acceleration. Air filters also can get so dirty that the engine stalls completely. But such a problem only develops after considerable neglect. Air filters may not need to be replaced at each and every oil c hange servic e c all. M any technicians advise replacing the filter every 8,000 miles. How ever, drivers w ho live in particularly dry and dusty regions may need to replace filters more frequently. M ec hanic s c an often detec t w hen an air filter needs to be replaced. If he or she notices the air filter is particularly dirty, then it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing the filter is a relatively inexpensive repair for the amount of performance and peace of mind a new filter provides.

W hy a clean air filter is important in your vehicle
AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hotweather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form.

Mon.-Fri. 8am-5pm INDICATORS IT’S TIME TO CHANGE AIR FILTERS Vehicle maintenance can protect drivers’ investments and help their automobiles run efficiently. One area drivers should pay particular attention to is their vehicles’ air filters. When operating at optimal capacity, an air filter improves fuel efficiency while ensuring vehicles accelerate smoothly without taxing the engine. But when air filters are clogged, fuel efficiency is reduced and emissions are increased, a 1-2 punch that costs motorists money and hurts the planet at the same time. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals to determine the recommended intervals to replace air filters, but the following are a handful of indicators that suggest it’s time to change them. Gas mileage: Unless you just purchased your vehicle, you likely know how many miles you can drive on a full tank of gas. If that gas mileage is suddenly slipping and you find yourself visiting the filling station more frequently, then it might be time to replace your air filter. Engine light: Drivers may be alerted to engine issues when the “Check engine” lights up on the vehicle’s dashboard. This light may come on to indicate a problem with the air filter, as clogged air filters reduce air flow to the engine, resulting in an imbalanced air-fuel mixture that adversely affects the engine. Starting and idling problems: Vehicles sometimes don’t start up as smoothly as they once did, and drivers may also notice vehicles are not idling smoothly. These symptoms may indicate misfiring spark plugs that are being polluted (and made less effective) by a dirty air filter that is reducing the flow of air to the engine. Acceleration difficulties: Automobiles that are operating at peak capacity accelerate quickly. But dirty, worn out air filters adversely affect acceleration. Drivers who notice that their cars are struggling to accelerate when stoplights turn green or on highways may need to replace their vehicles’ air filters. Dirty air filter: Perhaps the biggest indicator that an air filter needs to be replaced is the filter itself. If you cannot find the air filter on your own, consult your vehicle owner’s manual to determine where it is. Once you find the air filter, examine it in broad daylight. Clean air filters are white, so if the filter has darkened, it may need to be replaced.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

ld dogs have something to wag about this summer, as The Grey Muzzle Organization announces the recipients of its annual grants, and Rochester Hope for Pets is among the winners. Rochester Hope for Pets in Rochester is one of 77 animal welfare groups chosen from 266 applicants to receive a grant to help local senior dogs. The winning groups received more than $616,000 in grants to help save or improve the lives of at-risk old dogs in their communities. “This grant will help us give senior dogs like 8-year-old Otto the surgery she needs on her knees to help her live out her golden years much more comfortably,” said Krista Brown of Rochester Hope for Pets. “No one is more grateful or loving than an old dog, and we’re looking forward to helping more senior dogs get the second chance they all deserve.” Over the past 13 years, the national nonprofit Grey Muzzle Organization has provided more than $3.1 million in grants to support its vision of “a world where no old dog dies alone and afraid.” “Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we’re delighted to help deserving organizations like Rochester Hope for Pets make a difference in the lives of dogs and people in their communities,” Grey Muzzle’s Executive Director Lisa Lunghofer said. “Many senior dogs in the Rochester area are enjoying their golden years in loving homes thanks to the wonderful work of Rochester Hope for Pets.” Rochester Hope for Pets’ mission is threefold: improving the quality of life for Rochester area companion animals by providing grants for veterinary care to pets whose owners are in times of need; assisting veterinary health teams with continuing education, research and new technology for the advancement of companion animal care; and providing support to animal-related nonprofit organizations whose missions support homeless animals in need. The national nonprofit The Grey Muzzle Organization improves the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescue organizations, sanctuaries, and other nonprofit groups nationwide. For details, please visit www.greymuzzle.org. Otto is one of many wonderful senior dogs who have received grants from Rochester Hope for Pets for much needed health care. Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’ Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Furniture or “yard sale finds”: These can be stabilized and given a new look through stain/paint or distressing, but some may also lend themselves to transformation for other uses, such as turning a chest of drawers into bookshelves, a chair into a swing, a dresser into a seat, and more.

Chronic vs. Acute Pain
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the difference between chronic pain and acute pain? How can I best describe my chronic pain when it is variable in intensity but negatively impacts so much of my life and my activities? Are there things my doctor should consider or suggest in my treatment or in communicating with me? -- P.P.C. ANSWER: Acute pain is usually due to an injury or infection, and we expect healing to occur relatively quickly. Chronic pain is expected to go on for at least six months. In some people, acute pain is not treated adequately at the time of injury, and the brain and body learn to be in pain chronically. The reason for pain is perfectly obvious in some cases, but in others, it is not possible to identify the exact cause of pain. Most times, pain is due to damaged nerves (neuropathic pain); injury or degeneration in the musculoskeletal system (osteoarthritis and many kinds of back pain); inflammatory pain (due to infection or inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis); and compressive pain (such as kidney stones or cancer). Chronic pain affects many parts of your life, as you correctly note, and an experienced doctor will ask about the effect of pain on your social life, mood (depression is very common), relationships, sleep, exercise and occupation. People with more severe problems will have limitations in their activities of daily living. Many people with chronic pain have almost given up communicating the scope of the problems they have, as they don’t like “complaining” all the time, or they feel their loved ones are tired of hearing about it. However, getting a thorough history of the effect of all these dimensions of pain is important for your doctor. Questionnaires like the Brief Pain Inventory address more areas of function than a typical 1-10 pain scale, and may be useful to monitor response to treatment. Experts in pain management are more likely to have the knowledge and experience to communicate about pain effectively, and truly effective treatment for chronic pain requires understanding it. There can be pain without suffering. Suffering is the emotional component brought on by fear: “How bad am I going to hurt today? Will I ever be able to work again? All of my relationships are suffering.” Learning to live a function-centered life is key in the treatment of chronic pain. It isn’t easy and requires a multidisciplinary approach. The time of prescribing pain medications, especially opiates, without a comprehensive plan for long-term pain management, should be over.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
DEALING WITH DRY MOUTH AT NIGHT Dry mouth may seem like an easy problem to solve–just have a glass of water! However, it is not that simple, especially while you are sleeping. Since dry mouth can be a symptom of other conditions such as diabetes or Parkinson’s disease, it is best to ensure you are doing everything you can to treat the underlying cause first. If the problem persists, try cutting out spicy and acidic foods as they can exacerbate the issue. Keep your caffeine intake to the morning hours and avoid alcohol close to bedtime. Adding a cool mist humidifier to your nightstand is a good idea as well, as is using a mouthwash developed for dry mouth relief after brushing your teeth at night.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Passw ord protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone ow ners passw ord-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the w rong hands, you could make it very eas y for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity. Review your social netw ork privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social netw ork sites. As the use of social netw orking continues to i ncrease, it’s expected that the use of malw are w ill rise, too. Cybercriminals are alw ays looking for w ays to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of w hat apps you insta ll, and never “ friend” someone you don’t know. Consider getting extra protection. There are a grow ing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as w ell as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, M obile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity M oni toring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Dill planted near tomatoes will draw caterpillars away from the fruits. And it’s delicious. * Potato salad will have more flavor if you whisk together all the dressing ingredients and add it to the potatoes when they are warm. The potatoes will absorb the ingredients better, and the flavor will develop even more during refrigeration. * “I love to grill, and when it’s nice out, we grill every weekend. I always put on extra and use the leftovers through the week. Chicken in salad, a nice flank steak for fajitas, etc. And it means less cooking for me!” -- Y.L. in Maryland
DID YOU KNOW?
DON’T LET SUNBURN DERAIL SUMMER FUN Many people find it impossible to think about summer without conjuring visions of spending endless hours outdoors from morning until evening, whether beachside, on the open water or even floating in a backyard pool. Although a certain measure of sun exposure is required for some natural functions of the body, it’s well documented that too much time in the sun can be hazardous to one’s health. That’s why summer frolickers need to exercise considerable caution each time they step outside. Taking sunburn for granted can be a big mistake. Many people wouldn’t risk burns from a hot stove or open fire, but they won’t think twice about being unprotected under the very hot rays of the sun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one-third of adults and nearly 70 percent of children admit to suffering from sunburn within the past year. Depending on the intensity of the sun and the amount of time spent outside, sunburn can be a first- or second-degree burn. In first-degree burns, damage affects the topmost layer of skin. However, sunburn can even affect deeper layers and cause blistering in addition to redness and pain. Sunburn also can cause some irreparable damage that goes unseen. According to WebMD, ultraviolet light from the sun can alter DNA, prematurely aging skin or even contributing to skin cancers. It can take years before symptoms become noticeable. Therefore, it is best for people of all ages to exercise caution when spending time in the sun. Sunburn is one of the most easily prevented summertime ailments. It’s also important to note that sunburns are not just limited to the hot weather or when it is sunny outside. Ultraviolet damage can occur at any time of the year, and also from artificial UV sources, such as tanning beds. Preventing sunburn is simple. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Aerial yoga is a relatively new form of the Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline of yoga. Inspired by aerial gymnastics, calisthenics, pilates, and, of course, yoga, aerial yoga is sometimes referred to as “antigravity yoga.” This unique form of yoga involves the use of hammocks suspended from the ceiling that support practitioners’ bodies, allowing them to work against gravity. Popular aerial yoga poses include aerial lunges, the half boat pose, the reclining angle pose, and the one-legged king pigeon pose. Though aerial yoga is a recent phenomenon, those interested in pursuing this unique form of exercise can seek more information at local yoga studios. Unlike traditional yoga that many people can practice at home without supervision, aerial yoga participants should only perform the poses under the supervision of professionals.

* Here’s a great recipe for an icy treat: Freeze orange juice or apple juice in ice trays. Throw a handful in the blender for a fruit slush that can’t be beat on a hot day. * “A lot of smoke was coming off our grill, and our patio doors were wide open. Long story short: It swamped the living room with smoke. The smell was a little overwhelming. After we closed the door, my neighbor doused a kitchen towel with white vinegar, wrung it out and waved it around the room. It cleared out the smoke smell right away, and the vinegar smell went away just as quickly. What a miracle!” -- F.F. in South Carolina * Got poison ivy? The maddening itch might find relief from coffee grounds or a cooled cuppa. It contains anti-inflammatories.

Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy.
siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On July 19, 1799, the Rosetta Stone is found in Egypt by a French soldier. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Are You a Victim of Elder Abuse? Do you suspect, or know, that somebody has been stealing from you? Maybe it’s items from your home? Or maybe it’s your money? Or perhaps you’re being pressured by someone to keep giving them cash. If so, you are not alone. It’s called elder abuse. The biggest problem is that these thefts are often not reported, typically because the one doing the abusing is a family member. Or maybe it’s after the fact, and we’re not certain. Or maybe we don’t know where we should report it. Finances and theft aren’t the only forms of elder abuse. Others include emotional, sexual and physical abuse, neglect and exploitation. Emotional abuse, for example, can include threats, belittling and verbal attacks -- anything that causes mental distress and pain. Exploitation can be fraud, undue influence over your cash or property and being pressured to sign papers you don’t understand. Do you see yourself in any of those categories? The National Center on Elder Abuse website (ncea.acl.gov) is a good place to start. Notice the red banner at the bottom of the page with “Safe Exit” in white letters. If you’re looking at the site and fear that someone will come up behind you and read what you’re looking at, quickly click that red banner and it will take you to an innocent-looking webpage. If you are being abused in some way, help is available. In all states, there are professionals who are required to report suspicions of maltreatment. It’s called mandatory reporting, and in some states the list of professions is very long and varied: chiropractor, occupational therapist, member of the clergy, attorney, animal control officer, bank employee and many others. To get a referral for help, call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-6771116. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Draw the blinds or close the drapes on especially hot days. Drawing blinds and closing drapes can keep the sun out of the home, lowering temperatures inside as a result. While many homeowners understandably do not want their homes to be dark all day long, on especially hot days when the summer is bearing down, drawing the blinds or closing the drapes can have a substantial impact on comfort levels inside the home.

POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF ROOF TROUBLE Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced.

Hi! My name is I love laying on my mom’s pillow with her when she naps. My brother Walter and I share the same birthday, March 19th. Sadly, Walter went to heaven last Easter. I turned 15 years old this year. Mom has a blanket with Walter’s picture on it and when she did laundry last weekend she opened the washer to see Walter looking up at her ??. He is still with us. Happy belated birthday brother.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Parking Tickets To the rant about parking tickets given out on July 2: Did you give it a thought that the owner of the abandoned building called the police to have you ticketed? You parked on private property, so you took on the risk of being ticketed and even towed. Maybe park on the street or at a public parking lot next time.
S E V RA Thank you, Pat Privatera! In LeRoy, we are blessed to have a multi-faceted health facility. Available is a certified Physical Therapy Program with great equipment and space for this program; something for everyone. It is available for those needing medical Physical Therapy, people, especially handicap individuals who benefit from water exercises, people who want group exercise, like Medicare Silver Sneakers, water aerobics, access to personal trainers, etc. Children can have birthday parties with use of the gym and pool and group activities thought up by community groups are welcomed. The staff, from the Certified Physical Therapist, to office and other staff are pleasant, helpful, and accommodating. This all came about because of a wonderful Physical Therapist, Pat Privatera. I believe that my participating in water exercises in the heated pool over the last 12 to 15 years has kept me from becoming bedridden.
Future of Social Security I feel very sorry for the generation of young people who think that they won’t have to worry about a shortage of nursing homes, assisted living facilities and sky-high insurance premiums. Your grandchildren and greatgrandchildren are all going to have to pay through the nose. Good luck to you! I will be fortunate enough to be dead and gone hopefully before this day comes. I have been working and paying into this honey pot since age 14. Get off your butts and get a job. To the 85-year-old woman To the 85-year-old woman complaining that her memory is telling her in the last month the administration borrowed from Social Security. Then, she said it was stolen again. So, she’s saying it was stolen twice since January. Here’s some information for you. [Some] say the Social Security program has to borrow money to stay afloat, making it a key part of the national debt crisis. [Others] say Social Security is fully funded with a huge surplus. Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Consider design Design your résumé so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. Classic serif style fonts can make a résumé seem dated, so select modern fonts that are crisp. The idea is for the résumé to look balanced and clear, without being overdone with modifications, like italics and bold lettering. However, a spot of color could provide much-needed attention. EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce. As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects. Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads.
