TIPS FOR BETTER BREAKFASTS
Put your slow cooker to work. Slow cookers are not just for dinner. Use them to cook a variety of breakfast foods, including oatmeal, eggs or grits. Simply mix up your ingredients, set on low and let the breakfast cook itself overnight.
RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS
Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of life. Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town.
With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conductedbylawenforcementofficials, whereastaxidriversaresubjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests.
While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides.

My plum tree that I planted about five years ago, after having one good season of bearing plums, has been overtaken with canker. About 70% of the branches have no leaves. Is there any treatment for canker in fruit trees? Can the tree be saved or is it too late?
While it’s difficult to determine the exact cause of the canker without a thorough examination, there are some potential treatment options you could consider:
1. Pruning: Pruning affected branches is often recommended to remove the infected areas and improve air circulation. Be sure to sterilize your pruning tools before and after each cut to prevent spreading the disease further.
2. Fungicides: Depending on the severity of the canker, applying a fungicide specifically designed for fruit trees may help control the disease. However, it’s important to carefully follow the instructions on the product and consult with a local horticulturist or extension service for guidance.
3. Proper care: Ensuring that your plum tree receives proper care, such as regular watering, adequate nutrition, and maintaining overall tree health, can help it recover from canker and prevent future infections.
It’s important to note that the effectiveness of treatment may vary depending on the severity of the canker and the overall health of the tree. In some cases, if the canker has spread extensively and affected a significant portion of the tree,it may be too late to save it.Consulting with a professional arborist or horticulturist who can assess the situation in person would be the best course of action to determine the chances of saving the tree.

HARDSCAPES
Consult a professional. While many hardscaping additions can be handled by novices, large-scale projects, such as patios and decking, can change the grading of the yard. Professionals can map out how to handle drainage issues and meet building codes. In addition, professional installation can ensure hardscaping features last for years to come.
MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE
Keep surfaces free of clutter. Surfaces such as dining tables, coffee tables and kitchen counters tend to accumulate clutter. While such clutter might not feel overwhelming in a large home, in small spaces crowded surfaces can make it feel as though the walls are closing in. Make an effort to keep surfaces free of clutter, resolving to discard or put items away each night before going to bed.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER
Stop cooling an empty home. A cool home might be the ultimate necessity during summer heat waves, but there’s no reason to cool a residence when no one is home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, operating thermostats more efficiently can help homeowners trim their cooling costs by as much as 10 percent. One way to be more efficient with thermostats is to keep the house warmer than normal when no one is home. Programmable thermostats can be set so air conditioning units turn on shortly before residents arrive home, ensuring the house is comfortable and no energy is wasted.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
How often are lost pets found and returned?
Prevent your pet from becoming a statistic
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Shakes” is a “bolter” -- he will bolt out the door and straight into the street if I’m not careful. I worry constantly about him getting lost in the woods nearby. If that happens, what should I do? I feel that lost pets don’t get found very o en. -- Jamie B. in Egypt, Maine
DEAR JAIME: Most dogs who get lost are found and returned to their owners at fairly high rates -- between 81% and 97%, according to a 2012 report. at doesn’t make it any less stressful to their owners, who must scour the neighborhood and put up signs to find their dogs. e statistics for cats are much worse, with only 45% to 72% being returned to their owners. A bunch of things make it harder to find a lost cat: no ID tag, if the cat’s collar breaks away on an obstacle or no microchip. Cat owners wait much longer than dog owners to report their cat missing -- probably because they feel most cats will come home on their own. ose stats aside, Shakes would benefit greatly from being trained not to react when the front door opens. Each day, do about 15 minutes of training with him:
-- Put Shakes on a leash and lead him toward the front door. Command “sit.”
-- Reach out for the front doorknob. If Shakes starts forward, bring your hand back to your side and command “sit” again.
-- Repeat the doorknob reach until he no longer reacts but remains sitting. When he does this, give him a tiny treat.
-- Progress to turning the knob, opening the door and leaving the door open. Shakes should remain sitting for each level to be successful.
Keep the training fun, and be consistent. It’ll help Shakes stay safe inside and improve your peace of mind.Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizing to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premiums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money.

HOW STUDENTS CAN PREPARE FOR STANDARDIZED TESTS
Look for free programs and resources.A student’s school may offer a free test preparation program as testing season draws closer. In addition, books on preparing for tests may be available for free at your local library. In the latter example, parents and students should confirm that any preparation guidebooks are up-to-date. Testing has changed significantly over the years, so students won’t want to be looking over prep materials that no longer reflect modern tests.

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF
Telecommunications According to the NDC, telecommunications technology has evolved considerably in recent decades. That evolution has made it easier than ever for deaf individuals to communicate.
The NDC notes that telecommunications technology for deaf individuals is an umbrella term that includes telephone devices, platforms and services that are employed when standard phones are ineffective. The NDC identifies three primary telecommunications services:
1. Video relay service (VRS)
2. Telecommunications relay service (TRS)
3. Video remote interpreting (VRI)
Regulated by the Federal Communications Commission,VRS and TRS are free programs, whereas VRI is a fee-based service. TRS is a text-driven service that, unlike VRI and VRS, does not employ video.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Bisphosphonates Cause Esophageal Disorders To Worsen
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 68-year-old female with osteopenia. My doctor wants me to take a bone medication such as Boniva or Fosamax. I’ve read that folks with esophageal issues may be harmed by taking these. Can you explain why? -- C.M.C.
ANSWER: First off, we don’t usually treat isolated low bone mass (osteopenia) with powerful medicines like the ones you mentioned, which are both bisphosphonates. These medicines have the potential for harm and should only be used when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.
A person with low bone mass and a history of a fragility fracture has osteoporosis, regardless of their bone density. Some people with low bone density may be at such a high risk for fracture (based on their FRAX score) that treatment is indicated. Before treating someone with medication, many authorities recommend a 10year risk of a fracture of 20% or higher (or a risk of a hip fracture of 3% or higher). You should find out your FRAX score.
The issue with the esophagus is that if pills get stuck in the esophagus, they can cause severe damage to it. So, people with esophageal disorders -- such as achalasia, esophageal stricture or varices, or Barrett’s esophagus -- should not take these types of medicines by mouth. People with reflux without these complications can take oral bisphosphonates as long as they can comply with staying upright for 30 minutes after taking them.

LIFESTYLE CHOICES TO REDUCE CANCER RISK
Avoid tobacco: Not only does smoking cause between 80 and 90 percent of lung cancer deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it also contributes to many other forms of the disease, including cancers of the pancreas, liver, bladder, and cervix. Quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke can reduce cancer risk.
REASONS TO AVOID PERICORONITIS
Most people’s wisdom teeth appear during their late teens or early twenties. Pericoronitis is a gum infection that can occur when wisdom teeth don’t fully emerge or “erupt.” A partially erupted wisdom tooth can cause a gum flap that traps infection-causing food particles and bacteria. Early symptoms include inflamed tissue, pain, and a funny taste or smell in your mouth. If the infection progresses, it can spread to the neck and throat and become life-threatening. Routine dental visits help you keep track of when your wisdom teeth will emerge. Awareness of early warning signs and symptoms of pericoronitis can help prevent the condition from progressing. A dentist will clean the affected area and prescribe antibiotics to clear the infection.
Maintaining a consistent schedule of regular dental checkups will give your dentist the opportunity of keeping an eye on the state of your teeth and any possible areas of developing dental problems such as problematic wisdom teeth. When was your last dental visit? Now would be a good time to schedule your next exam. If you don’t have a family dentist, we are accepting new patients at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we welcome your call at 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances.
P.S. More severe cases of pericoronitis may require removing the gum flap and/or the wisdom tooth itself.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved www.bataviafamilydental.com
Salmon Orthodontics
DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

IJen Tarolli: Building a Community with Parenting Village
BY SUZIE WELLS
n the bustling world of family and career, finding balance and support can be challenging. For Jen Tarolli, co-president of Parenting Village, the journey has been both personal and transformative. With a background in law and a passion for community building, Jen’s story is a testament to the power of creating a supportive network for families.
Jen Tarolli’s professional journey began at Brooklyn Law School, where she graduated in 2010. Following her move to Rochester in 2012, she spent several years as a litigation attorney. Today, she works at the University of Rochester, supporting a department that conducts clinical research in neurological diseases. Her role involves negotiating contracts, mediating employee issues, and strategizing departmental operations and business development.
Despiteherdemandingcareer,Jenisadevotedmothertothreeboys, aged 9, 6, and 3. Balancing her professional responsibilities with parenting, Jen dedicates much of her spare time to volunteering with Parenting Village and her local school’s PTSA. “Keeping care of myself makes me a better all-around person,” she says, highlighting her commitment to personal well-being through exercise, reading, and “terrible TV.”
Jen’s involvement with Parenting Village began shortly a er the birth of her second son. As a new resident in Rochester, she initially struggled with postpartum depression and anxiety, lacking a supportive network. Discovering Parenting Village six months postpartum, she was inspired by its mission and knew she wanted to help promote and support the organization.
She says, “I’m a fierce advocate that every parent and caretaker should have a village to call on.” Over the years, she has leveraged her business acumen to help Parenting Village thrive, grow, and continue providing essential support to families in Rochester. Her work ensures that the organization remains a vital resource for parents, offering community, connection, and education no matter members’ parenting style, beliefs, or backgrounds.
Jen’s role as co-president involves coordinating with a diverse team of volunteers, including mental health counselors, speech therapists, and doulas. Although she lacks professional training in these areas, Jen brings a unique perspective and strategic skills to the table. “I joke that I bring my cynical attorney perspective to our meetings,” she says, “but I hope it’s allowed our small organization to continue to thrive and grow.”
For Jen, the importance of helping caregivers find their own village cannot be overstated. “ e work I do provides something to someone. Even if it is just one person, if my efforts give something to them, then the work has been worth it,” she says. Her goal is to ensure that Parenting Village remains a beacon of support for years to come.
One of Jen’s favorite Parenting Village events is the annual Family Fest. e 9th annual Family Fest, held on July 21st at Rothfuss Park in Penfield, is sponsored by Crazy Dog T-Shirts and Soccer Shots, featuring over 45 local businesses, with something for everyone, from infants to toddlers to teens, caregivers and families of all sorts. Families will enjoy a day filled with mini-classes, activity tables, inflatables, food trucks, face painting, a petting zoo, and a silent auction. Jen says “Each year, it gets better and better. It makes me thrilled to be part of this organization.”
Jen reflects on the joy of seeing the community come together. “Watching PV’s mission in action is absolutely my favorite part of the Fest,” she says. “Talking to folks who are learning about a new resource for the first time, or connecting with other community members… it’s such a beautiful and joyful day. It’s a beautiful day to reflect on why we all put in so much of our free time to this small but mighty organization.”
As a mother, professional, and community advocate, Jen Tarolli’s goals are deeply intertwined. She strives to raise her children to be kind, healthy, and happy, and she aims to make a positive impact through her work with Parenting Village. “ e Village I’ve built for myself through my work with the Board is absolutely my favorite part,” she reflects.
It takes a village to raise children. With her dedication and vision, Jen continues to ensure that Parenting Village provides crucial support and meaningful connections for families in Rochester. Her story is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make in creating a supportive and thriving community.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB
Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

HOW BUSINESSES CAN EXPRESS APPRECIATION FOR EMPLOYEES
Highlight workers on social media. Social media is a significant part of modern business operations. Companies can create a Wall of Fame page that puts a weekly spotlight on a different employee who is contributing in his or her own way to the operations. Not only does this improve the morale of the team, it provides the public with a glimpse into the positive working environment of the company.

STEPS TO LEAVE A JOB GRACEFULLY
Deciding to leave a job is seldom an easy decision. However, it’s a more common decision than many people may know, as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average worker holds 10 different jobs before age 40.
People change jobs for a variety of reasons. Some do so because of better opportunities elsewhere, while others simply need a change. Regardless of what’s motivating a job change, leaving a place of employment can elicit various emotions, including some that may contribute to negative thoughts about a current employer. But it’s always best to leave a job gracefully, which can pay dividends down the road.
