The Power Tool Institute urges power tool users to wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. The PTI also advises users to make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and to inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. PREVENT DIY INJURIES

My plum tree that I planted about five years ago, after having one good season of bearing plums, has been overtaken with canker. About 70% of the branches have no leaves. Is there any treatment for canker in fruit trees? Can the tree be saved or is it too late?

Grubs: Grubs like to feast on the roots of grass right below the surface. Michigan State University Extension Turf & Landscape reports that grub damage can appear from March to early May or from mid-September to early November. What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer
• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.
• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.
• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.
• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

IJen Tarolli: Building a Community with Parenting Village

n the bustling world of family and career, finding balance and support can be challenging. For Jen Tarolli, co-president of Parenting Village, the journey has been both personal and transformative. With a background in law and a passion for community building, Jen’s story is a testament to the power of creating a supportive network for families.
Jen Tarolli’s professional journey began at Brooklyn Law School, where she graduated in 2010. Following her move to Rochester in 2012, she spent several years as a litigation attorney. Today, she works at the University of Rochester, supporting a department that conducts clinical research in neurological diseases. Her role involves negotiating contracts, mediating employee issues, and strategizing departmental operations and business development.
Despiteherdemandingcareer,Jenisadevotedmothertothreeboys,aged 9, 6, and 3. Balancing her professional responsibilities with parenting, Jen dedicates much of her spare time to volunteering with Parenting Village and her local school’s PTSA. “Keeping care of myself makes me a better all-around person,” she says, highlighting her commitment to personal well-being through exercise, reading, and “terrible TV.”
Jen’s involvement with Parenting Village began shortly a er the birth of her second son. As a new resident in Rochester, she initially struggled with postpartum depression and anxiety, lacking a supportive network. Discovering Parenting Village six months postpartum, she was inspired by its mission and knew she wanted to help promote and support the organization.
She says, “I’m a fierce advocate that every parent and caretaker should have a village to call on.” Over the years, she has leveraged her business acumen to help Parenting Village thrive, grow, and continue providing essential support to families in Rochester. Her work ensures that the organization remains a vital resource for parents, offering community, connection, and education no matter members’ parenting style, beliefs, or backgrounds.
Jen’s role as co-president involves coordinating with a diverse team of volunteers, including mental health counselors, speech therapists, and doulas. Although she lacks professional training in these areas, Jen brings a unique perspective and strategic skills to the table. “I joke that I bring my cynical attorney perspective to our meetings,” she says, “but I hope it’s allowed our small organization to continue to thrive and grow.”
For Jen, the importance of helping caregivers find their own village cannot be overstated. “ e work I do provides something to someone. Even if it is just one person, if my efforts give something to them, then the work has been worth it,” she says. Her goal is to ensure that Parenting Village remains a beacon of support for years to come.
One of Jen’s favorite Parenting Village events is the annual Family Fest. e 9th annual Family Fest, held on July 21st at Rothfuss Park in Penfield, is sponsored by Crazy Dog T-Shirts and Soccer Shots, featuring over 45 local businesses, with something for everyone, from infants to toddlers to teens, caregivers and families of all sorts. Families will enjoy a day filled with mini-classes, activity tables, inflatables, food trucks, face painting, a petting zoo, and a silent auction. Jen says “Each year, it gets better and better. It makes me thrilled to be part of this organization.”
Jen reflects on the joy of seeing the community come together. “Watching PV’s mission in action is absolutely my favorite part of the Fest,” she says. “Talking to folks who are learning about a new resource for the first time, or connecting with other community members… it’s such a beautiful and joyful day. It’s a beautiful day to reflect on why we all put in so much of our free time to this small but mighty organization.”
As a mother, professional, and community advocate, Jen Tarolli’s goals are deeply intertwined. She strives to raise her children to be kind, healthy, and happy, and she aims to make a positive impact through her work with Parenting Village. “ e Village I’ve built for myself through my work with the Board is absolutely my favorite part,” she reflects.
It takes a village to raise children. With her dedication and vision, Jen continues to ensure that Parenting Village provides crucial support and meaningful connections for families in Rochester. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Shakes” is a “bolter” -- he will bolt out the door and straight into the street if I’m not careful. I worry constantly about him getting lost in the woods nearby. If that happens, what should I do? I feel that lost pets don’t get found very o en. -- Jamie B. in Egypt, Maine
DEAR JAIME: Most dogs who get lost are found and returned to their owners at fairly high rates -- between 81% and 97%, according to a 2012 report. at doesn’t make it any less stressful to their owners, who must scour the neighborhood and put up signs to find their dogs. e statistics for cats are much worse, with only 45% to 72% being returned to their owners. A bunch of things make it harder to find a lost cat: no ID tag, if the cat’s collar breaks away on an obstacle or no microchip. Cat owners wait much longer than dog owners to report their cat missing -- probably because they feel most cats will come home on their own. ose stats aside, Shakes would benefit greatly from being trained not to react when the front door opens. Each day, do about 15 minutes of training with him:
-- Put Shakes on a leash and lead him toward the front door. Command “sit.”
-- Reach out for the front doorknob. If Shakes starts forward, bring your hand back to your side and command “sit” again.
-- Repeat the doorknob reach until he no longer reacts but remains sitting. When he does this, give him a tiny treat.
-- Progress to turning the knob, opening the door and leaving the door open. Shakes should remain sitting for each level to be successful.

Bisphosphonates Cause Esophageal Disorders To Worsen
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 68-year-old female with osteopenia. My doctor wants me to take a bone medication such as Boniva or Fosamax. I’ve read that folks with esophageal issues may be harmed by taking these. Can you explain why? -- C.M.C.
Quality Sleep
To help you feel your best and sleep more soundly, try the following tips: Take a shower – About 90 minutes before bedtime, take a hot bath or shower. This will help to reduce muscle tension & accelerate sleep onset. Create an electronics curfew – The blue light from your favorite electronic devices interrupts your ability to relax and fall asleep. Don’t use your smartphone, tablet and other digital devices for one hour before bed. Stretch to relax – Stretching for 10-15 minutes before bed will help reduce muscle tension. Turn down noises and do some gentle stretches to relax the muscles and mind.
ANSWER: First off, we don’t usually treat isolated low bone mass (osteopenia) with powerful medicines like the ones you mentioned, which are both bisphosphonates. These medicines have the potential for harm and should only be used when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.
A person with low bone mass and a history of a fragility fracture has osteoporosis, regardless of their bone density. Some people with low bone density may be at such a high risk for fracture (based on their FRAX score) that treatment is indicated. Before treating someone with medication, many authorities recommend a 10year risk of a fracture of 20% or higher (or a risk of a hip fracture of 3% or higher). You should find out your FRAX score.
The issue with the esophagus is that if pills get stuck in the esophagus, they can cause severe damage to it. So, people with esophageal disorders -- such as achalasia, esophageal stricture or varices, or Barrett’s esophagus -- should not take these types of medicines by mouth. People with reflux without these complications can take oral bisphosphonates as long as they can comply with staying upright for 30 minutes after taking them.

STUDY SHOWS GIFT CARDS CAN GIVE A BOOST TO SMALL BUSINESSES
(NAPSI)—If you own or run any of America’s nearly 31 million small businesses, recent research reveals gift cards can be a real gift to your bottom line. According to a 2019 Small Business Gift Card Study commissioned by First Data, now Fiserv, gift card programs help small business owners bring in more sales, attract new customers, and build relationships with their customers.
Small Businesses, Big Benefits
Not only do gift cards benefit a business, consumers expect them to be available at their favorite stores. In fact, 74 percent of consumers surveyed said they regularly buy gift cards from small businesses. And for business owners, offering gift cards can:
• Grow sales—Nearly 80 percent of consumers said if they have a gift card valued at 88 cents, they will visit the store to redeem it
• Attract customers—90 percent of consumers who receive a gift card from a small business they have never visited said they would shop at that business and return in the future
• Build loyalty—56 percent of consumers who shop at small businesses join their loyalty or frequent shopper programs. Of consumers that join loyalty programs at small businesses, 73 percent said gift cards are a preferred way for their loyalty to be rewarded.

Gift cards are often a popular choice for employers who use them to say thank you or reward a job well done. For 90 percent of consumers, they’ve not only received a gift card from their employer, but view it as an incentive to reward their hard work.

• When purchasing gift cards, 60 percent of consumers prefer plastic cards or paper certificates, but interest in digital gift cards is growing.
