Becca’s Spring Flower Garden

A cutting garden for a May wedding

Hungry Gnome Gardenscapes “Empowering people to grow food.”

Our mission to each client

Maintenance

Our mission is to empower you and your household to grow your own food as well as improve the beauty, habitat, air, water, and soil quality of your property while reducing the need for maintenance, by choosing the right plant material for the right location. We help you develop your property to its fullest sustaining potential, starting with food.

The maintenance of this garden will be relatively simple. Since many of the flowers are perennial, pruning off dead heads (deadheading) and cutting back plants that have died back to the root will be the only physical maintenance. Each year you may choose to seed in new annual flowers or just watch the existing perennials spread. Once a year fertilization will be good for the flowers in the spring as they grow and push flower buds. Mulching will be necessary to keep weeds out in the late fall, on the path and between flowers. During the growing season, many of these plants will block the sunlight from the ground and discourage weeds.

Project overview and Goals Unlike most of our clients you have asked us to design and install a late spring - early summer flower garden to be used for a wedding in May. You interest in food and flowers is something we wish to encourage and so it is with happy hearts that we designed this garden for you. Most of the flowers in this garden are not edible, especially the foxglove which is toxic if ingested. However we did manage to squeeze in a few early summer edible bloomers including chives and day lilies. And those poppy seeds you can buy at the store are from the Hungarian Blue Poppy which we have sown as seed in the garden. Periodically we will check on the progress of the garden and look for weeds but for the most part this garden will be a cutting garden and an insectary for bees, butterflies and humming birds. We hope you enjoy watching it grow and blossom.

Plant Lists

Becca’s Flower Garden

All plants are late spring bloomers. Bloom time is highly dependant on the weather and can cause flowers to bloom early or late. We have done our best to chose flowers that will bloom at the appropriate time for the wedding.
