77 TONNES OF CO2 SAVINGS PER ANNUM IDENTIFIED BRONZE AND SILVER ENVIRONMENTAL BUSINESS PLEDGE AWARDS ACHIEVED PLEDGED TO SUPPORT LOCAL INITIATIVES
SUMMARY UK Biocentre have recently achieved their Silver Award for the Stockport Council endorsed Environmental Business Pledge and are working towards implementing energy savings identified from a resource efficiency review. PROCESS UK Biocentre has recently taken advantage of the environmental support on offer from Groundwork MSSTT working in partnership with the council and has subsequently achieved the Silver stage of the Environmental Business Pledge (EBP). UK Biocentre, which is based in Stockport , is a Centre of excellence for the service elements of scientific studies involving data or biological sample collection, analysis and storage. UK Biocentre signed up to the Environmental Business Pledge with the aim of using the scheme as a means to reducing their carbon footprint and their associated energy bills, which is passed on to its customers. By joining the Environmental Business Pledge scheme, Biocentre have started to consider their environmental impacts. After an initial meeting with an environmental advisor, it was deemed beneficial in their pursuit of the award to carry out a resource efficiency review.

GROUNDWORK CASE STUDY THE RESULTS 77 tonnnes of CO2 per annum identified Working with Groundwork MSSTT advisor, significant energy cost savings were identified, mounting to savings of 77 tonnes of CO2 per annum. UK Biocentre is now working towards implementing the identified changes, through an agreed action plan. Achieved Bronze and Silver EBP Awards Biocentre have begun to monitor their environmental impacts and are investigating ways to reduce their energy, water and material usage. They have also utilized an impressive online system which ensures each employee has read the Environmental Incident Report Procedure and understand how to quickly and efficiently deal with environmental incidents. Pledged to support local initiatives As part of the Bronze requirements, Biocentre have pledged to support the local initiative; ‘Manchester: A Certain Future ’, an action plan for climate change across Manchester. Taking steps to reduce resource consumption As part of the Silver Award, Biocentre are taking steps to reduce their resource consumption. They have installed low flush toilets, halving the amount of water used per flush. They have also increased the amount of waste they recycle, through placing more bins around the offices and sending used pipetts back to their supplier for re-use.

FUTURE PROSPECTS Having successfully completed the bronze award, Biocentre are now progressing towards the Gold Environmental Business Pledge Award. They are using the pledge as a platform to implement the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System with the help from Groundwork MSSTT
