PASS IT ON! Groundwork is a group of charities helping people and organisations make changes in order to create better neighbourhoods, to build skills and job prospects and to live and work in a greener way.
Support local young people in your area by becoming a Business Mentor... The ‘Pass It On’ project is an approach to alleviating youth unemployment by inspiring young people to make good decisions. We are working in Stockport with a group that have shown interest in developing their careers but are unsure how to progress this forward. We have called this group the “in-betweeners”; they did not do badly in school, but nor did they do well. They are not the most hard to reach or disadvantaged of young people that are currently a target of many statutory youth programmes; but a group that has simple aspirations and dreams and are simply unable to figure out how to achieve them. How can your business get involved?
The amount of time we are asking for is variable. It can range from one off advice to mentoring individuals through a short placement. We are looking for the following support from local businesses: >
Visits and tours of local businesses for the group, showing them the wide range of potential careers on offer in the Stockport area
>
Meetings with local success stories, to inspire them to work hard and never give up
>
Work based learning opportunities, such as volunteering or work experience to give them a flavour of what work can be like
>
Advice seminars on what businesses look for in young people
>
Inspirational talks from CEOs
>
Practical HR support such as C.V writing and interview skills
What we hope to achieve through your help... By utilising local businesses, young people can get real life examples and local interpretation of youth employment opportunities. It will also help them better understand recruitment issues such as behaviours, quality of C.Vs and application forms, dress and interview techniques. By bringing businesses and young people together we also aim to change the perception of businesses about young people. Businesses will see that there are capable and enthusiastic young people out there, they just don’t always get the support they need to access employment.
