Warner extradition papers arrive in Trinidad from US

Jack Warner

Garvin Nicholas

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — The United States has officially requested the extradition of former FIFA vice president and Trinidad politician Jack Warner. The Trinidad and Tobago attorney general, Garvin Nicholas, held a press conference late on Wednesday evening confirming that the documents requesting the extradition had arrived. “I have this evening received a formal request for the extradition of Mr Jack Warner, with the supporting extradition package. The process is now for me to examine the documentation and consider the evidence and decide whether to issue

the authority to proceed,” Nicholas said. He emphasised that the matter has “absolutely nothing to do with politics”. “This is an extradition request by the United States government,” he stressed. Warner was indicted in the US on May 27 on multiple counts of racketeering, corruption and money laundering. The formal extradition request or “record of case” arrived in Port of Spain on Wednesday, just five days before the July 27 deadline specified by the extradition treaty between Trinidad and Tobago and the US, when Warner is due to reappear in court in Trinidad. Warner’s successor as

FIFA vice president and president of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), Caymanian Jeffrey Webb, who faces similar charges, appeared in a New York court on Saturday afternoon and pleaded not guilty, after agreeing to be extradited from Switzerland, where he had been held in custody following his arrest on 27 May with six other officials in connection with a probe into football corruption spanning more than 20 years and involving $150 million. The charges against Warner include the receipt of a US$10 million bribe from South Africa in connection with the award of the 2010 World Cup, a sizeable part of which was reportedly laundered by means of black market currency transactions in Trinidad facilitated by a large supermarket chain owned by a director of regional media conglomerate ONE Caribbean Media, publishers of the Trinidad Express newspaper. Warner is also accused of diverting for his personal use US$750,000 of FIFA funds donated to help earthquake victims in Haiti in the immediate aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in that impoverished Caribbean country. More coalition candidates announced for Trinidad elections; minister confident

L-R: Dr Suruj Rambachan. Dr David Lee, Brent Sancho, Vasant Bharath and Dr Fuad Khan PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — Leader of Trinidad and Tobago’s United National Congress (UNC), Prime Minister Kamla PersadBissessar has announced the selection of an additional five party candidates to contest the September 7 general elections, one of whom, Senator Vasant Bharat, minister of trade, industry, investment and communications, expressed

confidence in his prospects of victory. Bharat, a former MP for the St Augustine constituency in the 2007 Parliament, is returning to electoral politics as the candidate for the marginal seat of St Joseph, which he expressed confidence in reclaiming for the UNC after a loss to the opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) in a by-election in 2013. The UNC and the

People’s Partnership coalition are “well poised” to reclaim the St Joseph constituency, Bharath said. “Because the seat has been held on many occasions by the UNC I feel that we have a very good chance … I think that the UNC has an extremely good chance if we put our heads down and get down to the real work of representing the constituency. Trini ‘carjacker’, accomplice make off with Executive’s new vehicle When the top man of Trinidad-based Call Center – QUSET - decided to offer a friendly-looking foreigner a lift home late last Friday night, the last thing he expected was to be held at gunpoint and tossed out of his brand new vehicle. QUSET’s Chief Executive Officer, Rawle Aaron, 52, is counting his losses and hoping for justice after coming face-to-face with two guntoting bandits who threw him out of his brand new Toyota Fielder motorcar at D’Urban Backlands and sped away around 23:45 hours. Aaron said that earlier that night he dropped a few of his friends off at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara for a Caribbean Premier League match. Promising to return to take them home, Aaron said he ventured to the seawalls to relax until the game was over. Seated quietly in his vehicle listening to the match on the radio, the CEO recalled hearing a tapping on his window. Suspecting nothing, the 52-year-old rolled down the window and started talking to the man who had “a Trinidadian accent.” The stranger, Aaron said, told him that he was trying to get to Greenheart Street, and he (Aaron) pointed out that he was a far way from there since that street is in South Ruimveldt. As he was conversing with the stranger, a text message came through to him from his daughter who asked him to purchase some icecream and take it to her. Aaron, a South Ruimveldt resident himself, then decided to offer the stranger a lift, because he then had reason

to head in that direction. Aaron said as they neared Greenheart Street, the man told him told him to make the first left, turn off of the said street, and keep driving until he told him to stop. “There were people on the street then so nothing happened. I dropped him off and left to get the ice-cream for my daughter,” the man related. Later, he returned to the Stadium to pick up his friends. “Around eleven o’clock (23:00 hours) my friends and I left the Stadium heading for Palm Court, but when we arrived, I realised I was tired, so I just wanted to go home and rest. I dropped them off at Palm Court and continued north along Main Street,” the man explained. But at Main and Middle Streets, “I saw someone trying to flag me and I stopped when I realised it was the same person I dropped off in Greenheart Street, so I asked him if he didn’t find his friends, he replied ‘yes’ and that they were liming on the Seawalls, so I decided I could give him a quick drop there and then head home.” “Whilst traveling on the seawalls we saw there was no one out there and then he told me that his friends will be in Durban Backlands, so I decided to give him a drop there as it was also on my way home,” the father of three related. At the corner of Mandela Avenue and D’Urban Street, the stranger told him that he was heading near the Enterprise Primary School. “When we arrived in front of the school, he told me to drive up a bit more… that he was trying to locate the exact house.

Whilst I was rolling up slowly another individual wearing a hoodie came up to my vehicle from behind and opened my driver’s side front door and pointed a gun at me and said “Come out the car or I will kill you!”.” Frightened by the gun pointed in his direction, Aaron recalled coming out of the vehicle and complying with instructions to empty his pockets and throw his cash and cellular phone into the vehicle. He related that the guntoting carjacker “ told me to walk away from the vehicle and that if I looked back he will shoot me. So I started walking in a southern direction away from the vehicle.” “I only heard my vehicle driving away,” he said, adding that since the “coast was clear” he turned around and walked back out to Mandela Avenue and sought the help of a taxi driver who took him to the East La Penitence Police Station, where he lodged a report of the incident. Early the next morning, a party of police ranks picked him up and took him to the station, claiming that they had a suspect in custody. There he saw the man he offered a lift twice sitting quietly. “It was definitely this man. I picked him up twice and was conversing with him,” the man said. He said later that morning the police held a confrontation along with another man whose vehicle was reportedly stolen in a similar fashion. “Later that day, I returned and had the confrontation with the individual, and I identified him for the police, as he was still wearing the same clothes and his facial features, everything. U.S., Iran both counter-attack critics of nuclear deal

Reuters - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani both counter-attacked yesterday against conservatives at home who are trying to block last week’s nuclear deal. In Washington, Kerry told sceptical lawmakers that rejection of the accord would give Tehran “a great big green light” to accelerate its atomic programme. Rouhani, elected two years ago on a promise to reduce the international isolation of the country of

nearly 80 million people, defended the agreement following criticism from the Revolutionary Guards and conservative lawmakers that it endangers Iran’s security. In an unlikely common cause, the U.S. and Iranian governments need to sell the agreement to domestic doubters if it is ever to achieve both sides’ respective aims curbing Tehran’s nuclear programme in return for an easing of sanctions which have badly hurt the Iranian economy. Testifying to Congress, Kerry fought back against accusations by a senior Republican that he had been “fleeced” by Iranian negotiators in the final round of the Vienna talks. He warned of the consequences of rejecting the deal between Tehran and world powers including the United States. “We will have squandered the best chance we have to solve this problem through peaceful means,” he told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “The fact is that Iran now has extensive experience with nuclear fuel cycle

technology,” he said as Congress began a 60-day review of the deal to decide whether to support or reject it. “We can’t bomb that knowledge away. Nor can we sanction that knowledge away.” Opening the hearing, the committee’s Republican chairman, Bob Corker, attacked Kerry over the terms he secured in Vienna. “I believe that you’ve been fleeced,” said Corker. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew also said the agreement would not prevent the United States from imposing additional sanctions on Iran over issues such as human rights violations - a Congressional concern - if it felt this was necessary. Despite the rough ride in the Republican-controlled Congress, President Barack Obama says he will veto any attempt to block the agreement. Overriding such a veto would require a twothirds majority in both houses, which means dozens of Obama’s fellow Democrats would have to reject a signature achievement of their president to kill the deal, seen as an unlikely prospect.

Reuters - Greece’s creditors prepared yesterday for the start of bailout talks in Athens, after lawmakers adopted a second package of reform measures before dawn despite a left wing rebellion that may bring early elections. In a sign of how the goal of coming to grips with the country’s debt is swiftly sliding even further away, Greece’s most influential think tank predicted a sharp drop back into recession. That adds to the headwinds facing leftwing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who must negotiate a bailout

worth up to 86 billion euros (£60.6 billion) with sceptical lenders while struggling to hold his divided Syriza party together. After another marathon session that ended in the early hours yesterday, the Greek parliament voted overwhelmingly to approve the second package of reform measures. But 36 Syriza lawmakers rebelled, forcing Tsipras to rely on opposition votes. While his personal popularity is high, a renewed drop into recession after a modest recovery last year would test his government’s

ability to push through the tough mix of tax hikes, spending cuts and economic reforms demanded by the lenders. A spokeswoman for the European Commission, one of the three creditor institutions alongside the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, welcomed the Greek vote. Formal negotiations are due to start today. Greek officials say they aim to wrap the talks up and have a deal approved in parliament by Aug. 20, when a 3.4 billion euro repayment to the ECB falls due.

A TRADITION WORTH MAINTAINING A grieving mother who had just lost her son related to reporters what a good boy he was. According to the mom, the lad worked for $5,500 per week. Each week he would only keep $500 for himself and give her the rest. Upon reading this, it struck me that long ago, your first pay envelope would usually go to your mother who would determine what you got as spending money. It was a sign of respect then for sons who had just started to work to give their salaries at the end of each week to their mother. This would usually continue until the son was ready to get married or leave the home. But once under the roof of “Ma”, a working son would be obligated to hand over his entire salary to his mother. Over the years, this tradition began to be watered down. Eventually, it became a custom that only your first salary should be handed over to your mother. I was never comfortable with this practice, but out of respect for the wisdom of my elders, I too followed suit and when I began to work, I handed over my first pay envelope to my mom. She took out something and gave me the rest. I said to myself that from the second week, I would not hand over the entire pay package but

would instead give her just what she had taken out, assuming this to be for my board and lodging. I felt that by handing over my first pay envelope, I had fulfilled the custom in those days. The second week came and I was paid. As a responsible and obedient child, I carefully counted out what was for Ma and pocketed the rest. Instead of going home, I decided to have a binge with the “boys” at the corner shop. We drank a lot that day, but I made certain that the money for my mother was safe and secure. When I went home, halfdrunk, my food was waiting for me as usual on the table. I then took out the money and gave it to my mother. She counted it, looked at me, counted it again, and then asked, “What happen son, they short pay you this week?” I explained in the best way I could that the money she had was for her and that I had the rest. I did not mention that a quarter of it had already been spent at the corner shop drinking rum. My mother gave an understanding nod and went about her way. For years, I continued this practice of each week, taking out my contribution to the home and giving it to my mother. She always willingly accepted it without fuss.

Whenever I got an increase in my salary or worked overtime, I would usually increase my contribution. Also, on special occasions, I would ensure that my mother would get something extra. In those days, it was not unusual for us to give our parents money for their birthday, anniversary or at Christmas. I thought I was being a good boy. This practice continued for years until the stunning Mrs. Tom walked into my life and I told myself that I had to get married. The plans were set in motion. Then days before my wedding, I went to give my mother the usual contribution to the home. She held my hands and said, “No more, son! You will soon have a wife and the money has to go to her.” Then she did something that I will never forget. She took out a bankbook and gave it to me. Puzzled, I opened it and when I saw the balance, I nearly dropped dead. With that sum, I could buy a house. I turned to her and asked why she was giving me the book. She quietly and without much of a fuss said, “It is yours!” “Mine?” I queried. “How come?” “It is yours!” she said “But mom. I cannot take your money. You have done enough for me all these years. I cannot accept all this money in your bankbook,” I told her.

“The bankbook may be in my name, son. But the money is all yours,” she said. I was puzzled. “What do you mean that the money is all mine?” I asked. “Do you remember the money you used to give me each week from when you started working? It is all there.” My mother had saved every single cent that I had given her all those years. She had saved it for me. She never touched it. She never complained after that first payday about how I was no longer handing over my full salary to her. She never muttered a word of protest. All those years she was saving for me what I thought was my contribution to the home. That day when my mother

gave me that bankbook, I learnt a lesson in life. I had thought all along that I was my own “big man”. The cockiness of youth had led me to believe that I needed not stick to tradition and that I could manage my own affairs. However, when I saw how my mother set aside that money all those years until she felt I really n e e d e d i t f o r the most important step a man could take – marriage – she taught me never to be too “big for my boots” and never to dismiss age-old customs. This is why while I was saddened to learn about the death of that boy, I was pleased to hear how much of his salary he gave to his mother each week. I still shudder at the

thought of just how much richer I would have been had I followed tradition and given my entire salary each week to my mother. However, the lesson was worth it. I hate to see good traditions go down the drain. I hate to see young people feeling that they should be able to control their own finances when they begin working. I wonder just how many of the younger generation hand over their earnings to their mothers when the month comes.

== THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN ==

Does Steve Merai know why I was attacked? In August 2012 on the stroke of midnight, I left the People’s Parliament’s Rodneyite groundings on High Street and crossed over to Brickdam with Dr. David Hinds and Michael Carrington (now a Member of Parliament for APNU-AFC) to go to the Demico car park to drive home. David’s Toyota was on the parapet outside Parliament building. My Rav4 was on the parapet outside Demico opposite Parliament. David went into his car and began to drive off. Michael Carrington disappeared into

the night heading for the Linden car park. As I was about to enter my vehicle, a huge guy, not far from the build of Arnold Schwarzenegger, attacked me with furious blows to my head. The shouts brought the members of the People’s Parliament running towards me, but Michael Carrington got to me first. My attacker ran into a waiting black vehicle whose number plate was detected. The car was traced to then police officer Steve Merai. Mr. Merai told the Stabroek News that mischief

was perpetrated on him (my choice of words). He explained that his car was stolen that night for the purpose of pinning that viciousness on him. That was the end of that. This was the second brutality against me within two years, but the police weren’t interested. Mr. Merai is mired in controversy, second only to perhaps Sean Hinds and Bharrat Jagdeo. The son-in-law of prominent PPP supporter, attorney Ashton Chase, produced a tape in which Merai is heard threatening Chase’s son-in-law, Mr. Beckles, on behalf of a dubious businessman over monies owed. Merai’s explanation was that it was a narcotics conspiracy and he was acting undercover. Merai’s name would have popped up in the Thomas Carroll visa scandal, because

Carroll revealed in his cooperation statement with the district attorney that the Guyanese Black Clothes squad was the muscles he employed to get reluctant debtors to pay. Leon Fraser and Steve Merai virtually controlled the Black Clothes unit at the time. Merai’s name featured again in police investigations into the paid murder of businessman Mohamed Khan, owner of MFK Trading. Merai has been accused countless times for acts of deliberation in the shooting death of criminals. Any longserving media operative would tell you that in their journalistic curiosities in the realm of deadly violence and murderous situations in which there were insinuations about police officials, the name of Steve Merai would have come up. In one of these instances, I traveled a night to a gym in Subryanville to interview him and on another occasion at his small home in Bel Air Park. I can distinctly remember telling him that for the controversial figure that he was, I didn’t see any security detail protecting his residence. I remember him telling me he is capable of

handling his own security. The story of Steve Merai continues unabated, for we know now Sean Hinds has accused Merai of involvement in the homicide of Ronald Waddell. So far, Mr. Merai has never been charged and the media and victims have never supplied evidence to put Mr. Merai in a position where he is pressed to answer questions. So far, Mr. Merai has only commented on two controversies. First, he distanced himself from the 2012 attack on me. Secondly, he said he was acting undercover when he threatened Mr. Beckles. Now he has denied Hinds’s allegation. It should be mentioned in passing that during the 2015 election campaign, Merai provided security service to the PPP. I was told he was head of security arrangements. It would put my mind at rest if Merai could answer just two questions. Why would violent conspirators choose him to pin the blame for an attack on me. Why not someone with less resources and who doesn’t have the kind of connections like Merai to defend himself? The logic is simple to

Frederick Kissoon understand. Is it not better to choose a weak target so he would not be equipped to defend himself, in terms of resources and public relations skills, against a charge that he intended to kill Freddie Kissoon? Why frame a huge heavyweight like an Assistant Commissioner of Police, the status Merai held when the violent incident with me took place. This doesn’t make sense at all. I really would like to hear Merai’s explanation as to why he was chosen as the fall guy in the attempt on my life. The second question is who were these people? Does Merai have any idea, even a vague clue as to the conspirators? Of course I have my idea. The 2015 attempt was the second one. Dictatorship kills people. I was lucky.

Rodney Justice Committee asks for deadlines review, advises close after three witnesses

Late WPA Leader, Dr. Walter Rodney The Justice for Walter Rodney Committee wants the new government to review the deadline set for closing submissions in the inquiry being conducted, so as to allow three crucial witnesses to offer evidence before it ends. The Commission of Inquiry (COI) is being conducted to determine the cause of former Leader of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), Dr. Walter Rodney’s death, and while the committee has expressed agreement with the November deadline set for completion, it has expressed concern over the imposed deadline for the Commission to conclude hearing closing submissions from lawyers by next Tuesday (July 28). The committee is asking for this to be reviewed. Stating that it is aware that at least 10 more witnesses have indicated willingness to testify, it said that it agrees with the statements made by Attorney General (AG) and former People’s National Congress (PNC) lawyer, Basil Williams prior to the May 11 polls that the Commission could wind up its hearings after listening to testimony

from three crucial witnesses. “The Justice for Walter Rodney Committee is pleased with the Gazette notice that the life of the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry has been extended to November 2015. This is a realistic deadline, because most of the available evidence has already been laid before the Commission,” the body noted in a press statement. Continuing, the committee noted that the Commission is yet to hear completed testimonies from three key witnesses and “we believe that the Commission of Inquiry can conclude its work after hearing from these crucial witnesses.” Former Head of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Major General Norman McLean, former Crime Chief of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Deputy Commissioner Cecil Skip Roberts, and CoLeader of the Working People’s Alliance, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, are the witnesses they are lobbying for. “This deadline does not seem to take consideration of the need for the Commissioners to hear testimony from remaining

witnesses. We believe this course of action should be reconsidered,” the Justice for Walter Rodney Committee expressed. “The Rodney family needs closure. Guyana needs closure and more especially because the country is now embarking on a path towards national reconciliation. From the beginning of this process, friends, colleagues, and compatriots of Walter Rodney have felt that this inquiry is one of the pillars for the much needed process of national reconciliation, which must unfold in Guyana.” The Committee noted that an important signal of the readiness of all the political parties to begin this process came in 2005 when the People’s National Congress (PNC) - led at the time by Robert Corbin - participated in the unanimous decision of the National Assembly to establish a Commission of Inquiry into Walter Rodney’s killing. This, the committee said, was “an important signal of the readiness of the People’s National Congress to put the past behind and the body believes that decision heralded the beginning of this

- State Ministry says COI staffers to be paid soon process”. “In the spirit of reaching across the aisle demonstrated by the joining of parliamentary votes between the Working People’s Alliance and the People’s National Congress in 2005, and the work that has been done since then that saw the establishment firstly of APNU and then the APNU+AFC Alliance, the Justice for Walter Rodney Committee recommends that the three-person Commission of eminent Caribbean Jurists be engaged with in discussion, and a mutual deadline be established.” The political activist was killed when a bomb exploded in the car in which he was sitting. Dr. Rodney, aged 38 at the time of his death, was an eminent political leader engaged in a struggle against authoritarian rule for democracy and social justice. The inquiry was set up after years of questions and speculation as to what led to Dr. Rodney’s death. Thus far, the inquiry has seen many travelling from far and wide to offer their testimony into the incident which occurred

over three decades ago. It was initially scheduled to last four months, following its commencement in April last year. Subsequently the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic-led administration had extended the inquiry’s life on several occasions. Since the death of the WPA co-founder and political stalwart on June 13, 1980, fingers have been pointed in the direction of the People’s National Congress (PNC), one of the parties in the current ruling coalition, a Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC). Since its ascension to office, the coalition has stated its intention to bring the curtain down on the inquiry, citing that it has been costing Guyanese millions and was being used as a political tool as it has been accepting hearsay evidence. STAFFERS’PAYMENT Meanwhile, notice came from the Ministry of the Presidency yesterday stating that outstanding balances will be settled with staffers

entitled to payment. A missive from the Ministry indicated that yesterday Administrator of the Walter Rodney Commission, Hugh Denbow met with Minister of State, Joseph Harmon at the Ministry of the Presidency. The Minister explained that the business session was to “deal with the contracts and the people who weren’t paid”. It was said that during the meeting, Harmon emphasized that the staff that are entitled to their pay, “will get their pay”. He further revealed that all of the administrative arrangements to ensure that the hearings can continue as planned are currently being streamlined. The work of the commission is expected to proceed as was advertised in the Official Gazette. Today, Harmon is expected to observe the High Court where the various sessions of the Inquiry were thus far held. This examination comes as the tenth session of that inquiry is slated to begin on Monday.

We are data rich but information poor, says Chronic Diseases Director The incidence of cancer of the cervix has outstripped that of cancer of the prostate to become the second most common cancer in Guyana. This means that the prevalence of cancer of the cervix is second only to breast cancer, with both being the leading cancers affecting women in this South American territory. This is according to information contained in the 2015 Cancer Surveillance Report which was compiled with information garnered by the Guyana Cancer Registry and analysed by Director of Chronic Diseases within the Ministry of Health, Dr Morris Edwards. A total of 1,014 cases of

cervical cancer were recorded over the period 2003-2012 which gave rise to a Cumulative Incidence Rate of 270 per 100,000 population. And while it was mistakenly believed that the rate of cancer was highest among women of Amerindian descent, Dr Edwards’ analysis was able to dispel of this myth. He was able to ascertain that Guyanese women of Chinese descent had the highest Cumulative Incidence Rate, that is, 573.1 per 100,000 population. They were followed by Afro-Guyanese, Amerindian, Indo-Guyanese, and then women of Mixed race. Ahead of the compilation

of the Report, Dr Edwards disclosed that a survey was able to deduce that healthcare providers themselves had the perception that Amerindian women had the highest rate of cervical cancer. “Maybe we know of Amerindian women who have suffered with cervical cancer, and that is what gives us the impression that that may be the case. I have spoken to persons who work at the Georgetown Hospital and that’s their feelings also, but the evidence doesn’t bear that out,” Dr Edwards asserted. However, the Chronic Diseases Director pointed out that, Afro-Guyanese women had marginally the highest incidence of the disease followed by Indo-Guyanese women. “If this (data) doesn’t say something...we all have our perceptions; let the data speak for itself, because we are leading ourselves and others down the wrong path. We all have our blinkers on; we are data rich but information poor,” Dr Edwards observed. His analysis of the cancer data has deduced too that cancer of the cervix seems to be a disease of younger women as opposed to breast cancer which has accounted

for more cancer deaths in older women. According to Dr Edwards, more than half of the cases of cervical cancer were found to be in women below the age of 55 with those 15-39 accounting for the most cases. While reporting on the disease might not have been of the best in the early years, Dr Edwards did share his belief that t h e o n g o i n g Vi s u a l Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) programme that has been implemented by the Ministry of Health, has the potential of addressing a perceived reporting challenge. But this may not be possible until efforts are made to actually utilise the data

garnered. Currently the state of affairs that obtains, according to Dr. Edwards, is that “that data is lying in the VIA Clinic at the Georgetown Hospital. Nobody looks at that data; that data doesn’t get translated to us at the Central Ministry of Public Health.” However, moves have since been made, with the collaboration of the Pan American Health Organisation, to have the accumulated data entered into a laptop. There are currently some 294 entries thus far, Dr Edwards disclosed. This means that all women who have been screened for cervical cancer, regardless of positive or negative results, their information will be

entered into the system. Like the other cancers there has been limited staging of cancer of the cervix. Staging speaks to efforts made by medical personnel to determine the prognosis and treatment options. And according to Dr Edwards, in two-thirds of the women diagnosed with cancer there was no staging. “It pains me as a male to be making these statements...all it requires is to pass a speculum and take a sample and this can be easily staged. Two-thirds of the women don’t have any staging and the rest of the women are being diagnosed late with cervical cancer,” the Chronic Diseases Director lamented.

From page 8 other stolen vehicle owner also identified him as the culprit, but he kept denying.” Aaron left, but on Sunday he received a call from the police who said that this matter had attracted the attention of the Commissioner of Police as it is foreign national involved. Yesterday, a remigrant complained that his vehicle was hijacked by the said

Trinidad national. He called for justice, since the man who had been identified by him and Aaron had been released on bail. The Guyana Police Force, in responding to that article, confirmed that the investigations have been completed and the police are in the process of seeking legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions. “The suspect in the

matter, who is a Trinidadian Engineer employed with a reputable company in Guyana, and who was arrested based on description given, was placed on bail during the investigations. He had provided an alibi that was supported by two witnesses,” the Police said. Both victims are adamant, however, that the suspect released on bail is the perpetrator.

Anil Nandlall’s ex-bodyguard detained for Crum-Ewing murder Former Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall yesterday categorically denied any involvement in the assassination of political activist Courtney CrumEwing, and said that an exbodyguard of his, who police have detained, was hired several days after CrumEwing’s death. Nandlall made the denial during a press conference in which he repeatedly refuted suggestions that he, or any members of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), orchestrated the murder, which is being deemed a politically motivated killing. Nandlall met with journalists shortly after online news reports stated that police had detained Rajput Narine, his former bodyguard, in connection with Crum-Ewing’s murder. Narine, a former Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) officer, was reportedly employed with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) when Nandlall hired him as a bodyguard. But Nandlall said

- Former Attorney General denies involvement

Former Attorney General Anil Nandlall reads a statement to the media yesterday that he fired Narine some four days after he had employed him, for unsatisfactory performance. Nandlall said that he did not do a background check on his bodyguard, or ask for references, because he had assumed Narine was of “good character”. “He was a former CANU officer, he was a licenced firearm holder, he was in the

employ of the GRA, and I assumed he was a person of good character, (and) that is why he had a licenced firearm, which is a ground by which one is granted a firearm licence.” Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum declined to confirm the suspect’s link to the former AG or to release the name of the detained man. Police have also arrested

an individual with a firearm that ballistic tests matched to the one that was used by Crum-Ewing’s killer. Nandlall said that the police have not contacted him about the ex-bodyguard’s arrest, and he only learned of this development from online news sources. Crum-Ewing was gunned down in Diamond Housing Scheme on March 10, 2015, while using a bull-horn to urge residents to vote for the APNU+ AFC Coalition. He had also protested for several days outside Nandlall’s office, while calling for the former AG to resign. After his murder, some relatives alleged that CrumEwing had reported that he was threatened by two individuals, including a PPP official, while staging his protests. But Nandlall yesterday insisted that he had never spoken to or threatened Crum-Ewing. He also gave an alibi for his

whereabouts at the time. “Let me say from the outset that Courtney CrumEwing protested for several months in front of the Ministry of Legal Affairs, while I was the sitting Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs,” Nandlall said. “During that time, I never once interacted or spoke to the individual. As far as I am aware, no harm befell him while he was conducting his protest actions at that location. There is obviously an attempt to implicate me and the PPP in this horrendous act as part of a political design. I hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.” Reading from a statement, Nandlall said that Crum Ewing was shot nearly two months after he had stopped protesting outside the Ministry of legal Affairs. “At the time, I was speaking at a political meeting in front of the Kali Mandir at

Timehri. Approximately 100 persons were in attendance. “ He said that it was while returning from the meeting that he was informed of CrumEwing’s death. According to Nandlall, “wild allegations” immediately began to be made, implying that the PPP was involved in this killing. He said he was advised to hire security for his home, as well as bodyguards. “I contacted the Guyana Police Force and armed security from the Force was provided at my house, and I was offered the opportunity to retain a person of my choice as my bodyguard.” But Nandlall said that he accompanied President Ramotar on a New York visit on 12th of March, 2015, without securing the suggested bodyguard. He stated that while overseas, he met an old acquaintance, Anter Narine, and “the CrumEwing issue came up.” Anter Narine reportedly told Nandlall that he had a brother in Guyana, Rajput Narine, “who is a former (Continued on page 29)

Township status will bring order to Mahdia, resurrect business - Regional Chairman By Jarryl Bryan With Mahdia, Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni) being on the brink of township status, according to recent pronouncements from Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan, a recent visit by this publication to the area and its environs reveals that much work remains to be done for the country’s foremost mining community. And according to the newly installed Regional Chairman, Bonaventure Fredericks, the community’s elevation could not have come at a better time, owing to the overall slowdown in business within the community. According to Fredericks, the community’s business sector would enjoy a boost. “It (community) will be boosted everywhere. Taxes are necessary to develop, and we will be getting revenue into the community, through taxes.”

Region 8 Chairman Bonaventure Fredericks According to the Chairman, Mahdia’s rate of business has been on the slump for the past two years, due largely to the global drop in gold prices. Worse, Fredericks went on to point out that while the gold prices may have dropped, prices for fuel and food items have remained the same - inflated. Fredericks noted that as fuel and food supplies form

Residents say cattle and other animals roam freely within the Mahdia Police Station/Magistrate’s Court compound

an integral part of any mining operation, this serves to compound the financial hardship being experienced. Added to this is the decline in gold declarations. “The present gold mining methods (land dredge) mean gold is a bit harder to extract. Some may use excavators, but the results to successfully

proceed are not there.” “Someone may say they burn ten (10) drums of fuel, but only get two (2) ounces of gold (to show for efforts). This cannot compensate,” Fredericks said, pointing out a few challenges that mining operators face. At one time Mahdia nightlife would have become notorious for its late-night binges and frolicking as pork knockers sought out entertainment denied to them by months of hard work and isolation. However, with the recent imposition of a countrywide 2a.m. curfew on all liquor-selling establishments, the community was essentially muted after this went into effect. Commenting on the development, Fredericks said he welcomed the directive, which came from the Minister of Public Security (formerly Ministry of Home Affairs) Khemraj Ramjattan. The Chairman opined that the curfew has impacted Mahdia for the better. “Before the curfew there was a lawlessness that used to exist during the entire sporting night. Since this came on stream, we have more discipline in the

community. So I support the 2 a.m. curfew.” PRESSING ISSUES Meanwhile, talks with residents revealed other pressing issues affecting the community. Among those issues was the prevailing absence of landline telephone services and the state of the Mahdia Police Station/ Magistrate’s Court. In addition to residents’ complaints of the lack of washroom facilities within the compound, which was inadequately fenced, this publication was able to observe cattle and other animals roaming freely within the compound, along with garbage. Residents also complained bitterly of the policy of the Mahdia Power and Light, which occasions the shutting off of power from 06:00hrs to midday, in a bid to save fuel and the myriad potholes throughout the community and its environs. Residents also touched on the police presence in the community, pointing out that with the deplorable state of the roads, police vehicles were especially susceptible to damage. “When you do ten miles on these roads in the police

vehicle, it’s like you do a hundred miles in Georgetown, owing to the conditions of the roads. The police need new vehicles every three years, and the old vehicles carried to town. The police are working as a body and they’re handicapped.” The graduation to township status - in a bid to complement the existing towns: Georgetown, the capital, New Amsterdam, Corriverton and Rose Hall in Region Six, Anna Regina, Region Two and Linden, Region Ten - was announced by Bulkan, shortly after he became Minister of Communities. Three other communities - Mabaruma in Region One, Bartica in Region Seven and Lethem in Region Nine - will also be upgraded within that time. Bulkan had noted that the communities will each have its own Mayor and Councillors. The new towns will then be able to provide all the services that other Municipalities offer, including sanitation, banking and other Government services. It is expected that the four new towns will be operational by the time Guyana observes its 50th Independence Anniversary on May 26, 2016.

BaiShanLin concessions warrant special review - Guyana is yet to know how it has benefitted – Presidential Advisor

By Kiana Wilburg Presidential Advisor on Sustainable Development Dr. Clive Thomas will soon be making recommendations to the Granger administration for all concessions granted to major foreign investors to come under special review. Dr. Thomas said that the concessions granted to one major company, BaiShanLin, need to be investigated thoroughly. In a recent interview with this newspaper, the economist said that it is imperative for the new Government to have a “proper understanding” of how the nation is benefitting from the “hefty concessions” which were granted to these companies during the time of the past administration. He stressed that doing this will also help the government to manage how the country benefits in the long term from foreign companies. “The amount of concessions given to foreign and local businesses during the past administration need to be reviewed. The past administration displayed a wanton abuse for the laws and gave out concessions based on unorthodox methods. We need to change this and we have the chance to do so now. We need to implement a sense of structure for we don’t have that at all in this country. There is no sort of

Presidential Advisor, Dr. Clive Thomas organization and with the amount of concessions the giant company BaiShanLin has benefitted from, no one can be able to truly measure to date, the extent to which we benefitted in the past ten years.” BaiShanLin’s activities in logging and mining have been under the microscope for over a year now after indications that the company was responsible for exporting large amounts of logs. In January, the Guyana Forestry Commission, which monitors the forestry sector, disclosed that the company only has “legal access” to 627,072 hectares instead of over one million hectares that was being reported. These include 344,849 hectares as State Forest Exploratory Permits (SFEPs). BaiShanLin also controls 274,053 hectares of Timber Sales Agreement -Joint

Venture Agreements and 8,170 hectares of State Forest Permissions. The past administration, in the face of critical reports, was defensive over BaiShanLin, which was supposed to put down factories for plywood and other value-added wood products. These are yet to become operational despite the company has benefitted from millions in tax breaks and other concessions. Last year, several aerial photographs of parts of the BaiShanLin operations in particularly the Kwakwani, Upper Berbice area, were published by Kaieteur News, showing large stockpiles of logs ready for export. It drew widespread criticism over the seeming coziness of the then Government with the Chinese logging firm. Dr. Thomas said that the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest) should be tasked with the responsibility of doing an economic review of the concessions granted to major foreign companies based in Guyana. He said that such a report needs to provide recommendations on how the nation can reorganize the system of granting concessions and also measure the rate of benefits. He insisted that developmental benefits to the

country need to be set as priority. Dr. Thomas said that this is an important part of managing how the economy grows as well. Business and Investment Minister, Dominic Gaskin had told this newspaper that a number of new plans for the business sector are being crafted. He said that one includes the restructuring of the system for the granting of concessions to local and foreign investors. Gaskin had said that he intends to work towards depoliticizing the method used to dictate how concessions are to be granted. The Business Minister had said, “We need to end this culture where people think that knowing a Minister is going to automatically grant you a ticket to a menu or a buffet of concessions.” He had said that investors will be informed that they will only get what they are legally entitled to. Gaskin had emphasized that “there is no place for favouritism in this sector, especially when it comes to granting concessions.” He added, “You will get concessions based on how sound your plan is and the type of investment it is. We need to clean up those

Business and Investment Minister, Dominic Gaskin processes and look at what was granted to local entities and foreign companies here to ensure it is within the law.” “It’s a key step towards leveling the playing field.” He had revealed too that he has started some work with GO-Invest, especially with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Keith Burrowes. GO-Invest is a government agency which provides advice and

concessions, when necessary, to investors looking for the best way to start a business in Guyana. It also enables entrepreneurs from around the globe to tap into the wealth of trade and investment opportunities available in the country. He had said that some preliminary discussions were conducted with Burrowes and he will continue to follow up on a number of projects under the entity. This would help to make doing business in Guyana easier. The Business Minister reminded that GO-Invest is going to be the major interface between Government agencies, foreign and local investors. Given what he has discovered thus far with the agency, Gaskin had said that it is clear that the company needs to do its job without political interference. He had said that it needs to ensure that investment agreements are in accordance with the (Continued on page 28)

Visiting UNDP Director pays courtesy call on Governance Minister - Guyana asks for assistance in oil and gas industry The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s Assistant Administrator and Director for the Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean, Ms. Jessica Faieta, discussed areas of cooperation with Minister of Governance with additional responsibility for Natural Resources and the Environment, Raphael Trotman during a courtesy call yesterday, at his Brickdam office. Ms. Faieta, who is currently on a two-day visit to Guyana for the United Nations Meeting with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), was accompanied by the UN’s Resident Coordinator to Guyana, Khadija Musa.

Mr. Trotman told the UNDP team that with the oil and exploration activities being undertaken in the country, Guyana is looking for best practice approaches from a country which has characteristics to help guide the development of the sector, especially in the area of the drafting of contracts. In this regard, he asked that the UNDP, which he described as a “neutral” partner, support capacity building in that area. Ms. Faieta assured Minister Trotman that his requests will be considered and the UNDP will continue to work with Guyana for its further development. On the issue of Governance, he updated the team on the passage of the

He

further related that the Government is also actively pursuing the establishment of the Public Procurement Commission (PPC).

Mr. Trotman, in expressing his appreciation for the visit, reflected on the working relationship which Guyana currently shares with

the United Nations and the UNDP. He noted that it is one which has always been fruitful.

BaiShanLin concessions warrant... (From page 27) laws of the country. He said that the company has a very important role to play in terms of helping to monitor the export and import commotion of companies based on the concessions they were granted. Gaskin said that he does not see government sidelining the agency given

its importance. He said however, that the government will of course examine the performance of the company, but not necessarily with a view to conducting investigations. The Business Minister had said that he is interested in “lifting up Go-Invest.” He admitted that better could be done with the agency as opposed to what took place in the past. He emphasized that the company needs “new life” with its functions strengthened. Minister of State, Joseph

Harmon, had revealed some weeks ago that Cabinet granted the permission for the appointment of a new board for the entity. Harmon told members of the media that the life of the GO-Invest Board came to an end in 2014 and the company is now operating without one. He said that given this situation, Gaskin made an application for an interim board to be appointed for the purpose of guiding and directing policies for the agency over the next six months until a permanent board is appointed.

Harmon said that Cabinet subsequently gave its approval for the interim board to be appointed. He said that it will comprise persons from the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Lands and Surveys Commission, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Private Sector Commission, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Business and Investment, and individuals in the Diaspora. Gaskin also secured Cabinet’s approval to appoint persons to the board as he sees fit, and based on the realities of Guyana.

Psychiatric report stalls PI for alleged child-killer/rapist Ryan Bobb-Semple, who allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered nine year-old South Ruimveldt resident, Shaquan Gittens, made another court appearance earlier this week and was further remanded to prison. The court is still awaiting a psychiatric report on the accused. The report was ordered by Former Chief Magistrate Priya SewnarineBeharry over three months ago after his Attorney, Paul Fung-a-Fat, attested that his client was not competent to stand trial. The outstanding report is stalling the commencement of a Preliminary Inquiry (PI). However, at the court hearing, Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Neville Jeffers told the court that the accused has not yet been evaluated by Senior Government

Psychiatrist, Dr. Bhairo Harry. Jeffers said that he would have to summons the psychiatrist to attend court. On the other hand, Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan, who is now presiding over the matter, instructed the prosecutor to have an order prepared and sent to the

doctor. The next hearing is scheduled for August 4. The partial l y decomposed and bloated body of Shaquan Gittens, who went missing on April 1, was found in a trench in the South Ruimveldt backlands several days later.

Bail for man accused of damaging phone Fifty-four year-old Godfrey Taylor, who has no fixed place of abode, appeared before Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan yesterday to answer a charge of damage to property. Particulars of the charge stated that on July 16, at Croal Street, Georgetown, Taylor unlawfully and maliciously damaged one BLU Cell phone valued $10,000 - property of

Akeem Peters. During the brief court hearing, Magistrate McLennan asked the defendant what he had to say for himself. He explained to the court, “is he bounce into me and mek de phone fall down, I don’t work, my family does look after me and he (Peters) does work. However, Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro

Jones explained that on the day in question, Peters was about to answer his phone when the defendant jammed him causing the phone to fall to the ground. As a result the phone broke and Peters reported the matter to the police. Subsequently the defendant was arrested and charged. Taylor was then placed on $2,000 bail.

Anil Nandlall’s ex-bodyguard... (From page 13) CANU Officer and who is a licenced firearm holder and who is a person whom I can trust and that I should consider hiring him.” “He gave me his brother’s cell number. Upon my return to Guyana, I called the person and arranged to meet and met with him. I never knew him before, never spoke with him before and never saw him before. I met him on the 15th day of March, 2015, for the first time. “I met him in the presence of my driver, who knew him from before. He informed me that at the time, he was in the employ of the Guyana Revenue Authority and I need to write the Commissioner General and request his secondment. The following day, I did so and he commenced working with me. “However, after about four days, I was dissatisfied with his performance, generally. More importantly, my drivers reported that he was disclosing our whereabouts to persons on his telephone. As a result, I told him that I will no longer require his services and sent him away. I took back a

vehicle which was assigned to him as a backup to my vehicle. “I next requested from the Commissioner of Police, two members of the Force as my security details. Two officers of the Force were assigned to me. They were recalled when I demitted office. After I sent away Rajput, I wrote to the Commissioner General so informing him. “I hope I have clearly demonstrated that I only came into contact with Rajput Narine after the death of Courtney Crum-Ewing. I take this opportunity to deny any involvement whatsoever in that incident and to say that there is obviously an attempt to implicate me and the PPP in this horrendous act as part of a political design. I hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. “Nandlall said that he couldn’t recall whether he

had seen Narine after firing him. The former Attorney General stated that he (Nandlall) “was not a very security-conscious person”, and should have submitted his former security guard to “greater background security,” prior to hiring him. The former Attorney General said that he is now concerned for his safety in the wake of the stories about the arrest of his ex-bodyguard for Crum Ewing’s murder. “My desire has always been to serve the people of Guyana, and when one looks at the problems that befall you, as you attempt to do public service, then you really have to question if it is worth it. “I left a very successful practice to work with the government… at some point as a human being; you have to do some introspection to see if it is worth it.”

$$M robbery accused denied bail again Multi-million-dollar robbery accused, Kurt Kendall made another court appearance on Wednesday before Magistrate Judy Latchman and was further remanded to prison on armed robbery charges. Kendall, of Section ‘B’ Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, was once again unrepresented by an attorney. He made a bail application on his own, reminding the court of his alibi. He pleaded with the Magistrate to grant him bail in a reasonable sum. Kendall told the court that on the day of the robbery, he was at a car rental service, renting a car. He added that he was incarcerated since June 8, and it was his fifth court appearance. The defendant continued, “Since my incarceration my wife is unemployed and it is very difficult for her to maintain herself and my son”. Further, he explained that he has never seen the victims make a court appearance. Kendall said that he is not a flight risk and will return to court to answer the charges if granted bail.

Kendall is accused of robbing Elizabeth Seepaul of $1.2M and $2.5M on May 29 at Thomas Lands, Georgetown. He was allegedly armed with a gun at the time of the robbery. The monies are the property of Wings Aviation and Fly Jamaica, respectively. It is also alleged that on the day in question, he robbed Christopher Ali at gunpoint and relived him of $1, 652,000 - property of Fly Jamaica. The Magistrate after listening to Kendall’s submission inquired from Police Prosecutor, Inspector Vishnu Hunt, if he had any objections to the defendant being granted pre-trial liberty. Hunt replied in the affirmative. On his last court appearance, the prosecutor had objected to bail citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. It was also noted that a firearm was used to allegedly commit the crime. The fact that the defendant was convicted before for robbery under-arms was also highlighted by the prosecutor. Kendall spent three years in jail on that conviction.

After being informed by the Magistrate that he was still on remand, Kendall made a request to have legible copies of a statement he was given. It was then that the Magistrate instructed the prosecutor to serve him with a better copy. According to court facts, the victims are employed at Fly Jamaica and are stationed at the Ogle International Airport. On the day in question, around 10:30hrs, they boarded the company’s bus and went to conduct business. While the bus was in the vicinity of Queen’s College, a motor car pulled up in front of the said bus, causing the driver (of the bus) to stop. Three men exited the car, the defendant pulled out a gun and relieved Seepaul and Ali of the cash. Kendall will make his next court appearance on August 18.

Letters... Where your views make the news

Body language can portray un-intended messages DEAR EDITOR, Guyanese have a way of saying that ‘every skin-teeth na laugh’, meaning that we should be careful not to interpret every smile as a gesture of approval. In the same vein our posture may betray messages that inadvertently portray what we never intended. We should therefore be very careful that the ways in which we sit, stand, look and wear expressions on our face are all in consonance with the

verbal messages we wish to convey. In this regard I wish to refer readers to the photo carried in the media this week of the President of the New Jersey Arya Samaj meeting with our First Lady. The photo shows our First lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, sitting quite properly, lady-like, and obviously professionally making a point to the President of the New Jersey Arya Samaj, who unfortunately presents an

‘opposite’ posture of arrogance and disrespect especially with his left foot crossed like a ‘kick’ towards the First Lady. I have no doubt that the representative of the noble Arya Samaj Organization never intended to convey any arrogance or disrespect but that is what I and others with whom I consulted ‘interpreted’ from his posture. It is for such very reasons for example that we are trained in sessions on ‘good

manners, courtesy public relations and diplomatic behaviors’ to never cross our legs in such a way that our shoes point in the form of a kick towards persons with whom we are speaking. People in Eastern countries like India, the birthplace of the Arya Samaj movement, will never normally cross their feet in that fashion during interactions with others, especially elders, leaders and dignitaries. From page 5 of the fast prayer. Eid was celebrated with prayers inside of masjids and open air in Trinidad as well as in Queens, New York. Streets were closed off to accommodate worshippers in Richmond Hill, Flushing and in Astoria where large numbers of Muslims reside. At the compound of the Jamaica High School adjoining a Bangladeshi-oriented masjid, some 15,000 gathered outdoor

for Friday morning prayers and a feast ending the fast. As is their tradition on Eid, Muslims attended mosque for the morning prayer, followed by the sermon from the leader of the jamaat, and then a supplication asking for God’s mercy and blessings. This was followed by zakat or the obligatory act of charity to the poor, needy, the imam or mulvi, and the masjid. Celebrants consumed special dishes that are prepared on the occasion

as well as kajoor. Along with a minimum donation, Mulvis urge the more prosperous to give 2.5% of their income to the needy and to the masjid for community activities. As in Guyana, Caribbean Muslims in New York distributed sawine (liquid and cake form) and other sweets (gulab jamun, sirni, maleda, burfi, etc.) on the occasion of Eid. Same was also done in Trinidad, Surinam and Guyana. Muslims distributed sawine and mithai to neighbors and relatives on the occasion of Eid. In Trinidad, many (non-Muslim owned) stores distributed sweets to shoppers on Saturday morning to celebrate the festival. Gifts were also distributed to Muslim friends and relatives. Political figures and organizations issued statements on the festival in Trinidad and Guyana. In Trinidad and New York, beautiful henna designs were noticed on the hands of females who, like males, were

dressed in colorful traditional garb. Beautiful design of Mehndi on the palms and feet of females of all ages, but particularly the young ladies. Celebrants wear new clothes for the occasion. The females were also decked out in bangles of various colors to go by with their dresses. Celebrants e mbraced amidst uttering of Eid Mubarak and “A-salaam-allikum”. Muslims invited neighbors, relatives and friends for an Eid lunch or dinner on Saturday in Trinidad. In NY, organizations hosted communal celebrations; halls were rented for lunch and or dinners. And entertainment parks were rented for games for the youngsters. The next Muslim festival is Eid-ul-Adha which is in September after in the month of Haj. It is now an official school holiday though not a public holiday for government employees. Vishnu Bisram

We can find alternative...

From page 5 United States, especially in the state of California, is producing electricity and natural fertilizer, by utilizing organic and inorganic digesters of garbage. In a country like Guyana, this type of electricity production, that is very low cost, would be a much better alternative to costly hydro-electric dams or generators. I must repeat that this is a very low cost procedure, hence it would produce electricity at a much cheaper cost. The technology is on the Internet! In regards to Styrofoam, an enterprising small company is recycling Styrofoam into highly compressed blocks, which are then used as foundation for roads etc. The results are spectacular. There is no need for gravel and sand as foundation. A road bed is excavated, then it

is layered with slabs of Styrofoam, whose thickness depends on what is the loadbearing capacity of the road. This is then covered with an asphalt mixture. A maintenance-free life-span is many times greater than the typical road. The slabs are even being used to surface bridges. Mayor Hamilton Green, I hope you will read this missive and hopefully share it with those in Government, who like yourself, can effect some constructive change. Albert R. Cumberbatch, Ph.D.

PM: Govt. will reveal party financiers

Trinidad Express - Prime Minister Kamla PersadBissessar has said once all political parties came to an agreement to reveal their campaign financiers, her Government sees no problem in doing so as soon as the September 7 general election is over. Questioned by writer and lecturer Rhoda Bharath at Wednesday’s luncheon with the Joint Consultative Council for the Construction Industry, held at the Hilton Hotel, Persad-Bissessar said she remains committed to legislation that would force parties to declare their financiers. I am very committed to

campaign finance reform, in fact when we were in Opposition we had brought a motion through then member of Parliament Ganga Singh, calling on the then Government to put into place campaign finance reform legislation, she said. Of course nothing happened. In this term, a motion brought by Independent Senator Helen Drayton on campaign finance reform was accepted by the Government. It went to a Joint Select Committee, we accepted the recommendations of the Committee. Just before the close of the Parliament they gave us

their report, Persad-Bissessar noted. She added that she gave instructions for the report to be sent to the Law Reform Commission so a green paper could be drafted for Government to bring to the Lower House as soon as Parliament reopens. So we are committed to campaign finance reform, we will bring the legislation immediately upon the Law Reform Commission giving us their report to be taken back to the Parliament and of course we will move to putting into place a regulatory statutory framework for campaign finance reform, the Prime Minister said. She was further pressed by Bharath on the issue: But what about declaring who the financiers are, as an accounting to the public, as soon as the elections are done so we have a sense of who the financiers are and seeing if there was any link to the financiers and people who are receiving contract? But Persad-Bissesar maintained: Madam, should all parties agree? I am not the only party in this, I have no difficulty with that.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s opposition coalition will list candidates on a single ballot card in parliamentary elections, signaling a commitment to unity. The Dec. 6 election is the opposition’s best chance in years to win a legislative majority against the ruling socialist party. Opposition coalition spokesman Jesus Torrealba said late Wednesday that the 29-party coalition would pursue a single strategy and run

all candidates together on the same ballot card. Coalition leaders are counting on the dissatisfaction that sent young people into the streets in 2014 to help them win at the polls. They hope to mount a recall against President Nicolas Maduro, but interparty squabbling has sometimes handicapped that effort. The government in recent days has disqualified several opposition candidates from holding office for reasons that remain unclear.

India scandals threaten ‘scam-free’ government pledge Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bold promise of a squeaky clean government is under threat just over 12 months after his landslide election victory, with a string of scandals erupting across the country. Two months ago, Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated their first year in office, trumpeting initiatives introduced to reform Asia’s third largest economy and proclaiming the government scam free. But just weeks later, embarrassing allegations ensnared Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj along with the chief ministers of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh where

the right-wing BJP rules at the state level. Analysts say the government’s credibility risks damage after it pledged an honest and efficient administration, to attract much-needed foreign investment and win over voters enraged about endemic corruption. Graft scandals plagued the previous Congress-led government, resulting in policy paralysis and the worst economic slowdown since the 1980s. The latest allegations also threaten Modi’s critical land, taxation and other legislative reforms, with this week’s new session of parliament erupting

in chaos over opposition demands for Swaraj and the chief ministers to resign. “These scams that have broken out have really lowered the image of the BJP-led government,” said Satish Misra, a senior fellow with the Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation think tank. “BJP leaders celebrated their first year with a lot of pomp and show, saying ‘we have no scams, we are incorruptible’. But in the 13th month, there were scams breaking out everywhere,” Misra told AFP. The government has staunchly resisted calls to sack Swaraj over her role in helping corruption-hit former

Japan is worried that China is building 16 oil rigs in order to exploit oil reserves in the Japanese part of the sea. Japan this week asked China to stop building oil platforms next to a disputed area in the East China Sea. Beijing in turn called Japanese foreign policy “two-faced” and reprimanded Tokyo for

issuing photos of the oil rigs. The exchange follows a defense white paper by Japan on Tuesday that said China’s construction of some 16 oil rigs could be used to exploit resources on Japan’s side of territorial waters. The paper, issued days after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe won the first round

in a legislative fight to allow Japan’s Self Defense Forces to fight overseas, also criticized China for its recent activity near Fiery Cross Reef in the South China Sea. Beijing has been reclaiming small islands there and building landing strips off Vietnam and the Philippines, reports Defense News. (Yahoo News)

cricket boss Lalit Modi obtain a passport in the UK. The BJP has stood behind Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje, under fire for allegedly supporting Lalit Modi’s UK immigration application while he was under investigation back in India for graft. But it is also under pressure over Shivraj Singh Chouhan, chief minister of Madhya Pradesh state, where thousands of people are alleged to have bribed officials and politicians in return for jobs or places in training institutes.India’s top court has ordered a federal investigation into the socalled Vyapam scam after a spate of recent deaths fuelled claims of a mass cover-up by the Chouhan government. The opposition says dozens of people associated with the scam, including witnesses, have died but state authorities say there is little evidence to connect any of the deaths or to suggest foul play. Separately, a court has agreed to look into an allegation that national education minister Smriti Irani lied about her education degree.

As parliament began on Tuesday, the prime minister appealed for opposition unity to push through his longawaited new national sales tax and other reforms. “We all have to work together to take important decisions for the development of the nation,” Modi told reporters. But a veteran BJP leader, lawmaker Shanta Kumar, broke ranks, calling for an ethics committee to be set up to investigate some of the scandals embroiling the BJP leaders. “News about the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh has made us hang our heads in shame,” Kumar, a former chief minister of Himachal Pradesh state, wrote in a letter to BJP president Amit Shah. “It’s natural for any Indian to feel disappointed and disheartened with the kind of news on the front pages of newspapers and TV channels,” he said in the letter, released this week on his Facebook page. Parliament descended Thursday into turmoil for a third straight day, with the government branding opposition demands for

Narendra Modi resignations irresponsible, saying none of the BJP leaders had broken any laws. Lacking a majority in the upper house, the BJP needs opposition support to pass its bills including the goods and services tax (GST), which harmonises a myriad of state and central levies. Modi, who has a reputation as a strong leader and an efficient administrator, has pledged a plethora of such reforms to erase India’s reputation as an unpredictable and corrupt place to do business. Gold Cup: Ugly scenes as Mexico beat Panama in semi-finals Players clashed and items were thrown from the stands as Mexico won a controversial Gold Cup semifinal against Panama to set up a match with surprise finalists Jamaica. Mexico came from behind courtesy of two penalties - late in normal time and extra time - to win 2-1 in Atlanta. Panama’s Luis Tejada was sent off in the first half. At the end of the match, Panama players charged at the officials, who were escorted from the pitch by security. Mexico will win a seventh Gold Cup if they beat firsttime finalists Jamaica at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday. Already the underdogs, world number 62 side Panama’s task was made even harder when forward Tejada was dismissed for a reckless tackle on Mexico’s Francisco Rodriguez in the 25th minute. The Panama players surrounded American referee Mark Geiger in protest. However, despite their numerical disadvantage, Panama opened the scoring

Andres Guardado scored the winning penalty midway through extra time when Roman Torres, who scored the winning goal against Mexico in the semifinals in 2013, out-muscled Francisco Javier Rodriguez to head home in the 57th minute. Beaten 2005 and 2013 finalists Panama were seconds away from another final appearance, but were denied when Torres was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area. This sparked further aggressive protests

from Panama players, with fans throwing debris on to the pitch. Players from both teams confronted each other on the sidelines and had to be separated. After a 10-minute delay, Andres Guardado scored his spot-kick to send the game into extra time. Mexico were awarded another penalty towards late in the first period of extra time when Javier Orozco was fouled by Harold Cummings and

At one moment in the match I thought of retiring from football. I won’t because of the group [of players] I have. “It’s the first time this has happened to me, it’s hard, I was saying to myself ‘I don’t want to carry on any longer

The first wasn’t a penalty but the chance fell to us and we made the most of the circumstances (but) we’re quite bothered to have won in this manner, playing badly.” Jamaica became the first Caribbean side to reach the Gold Cup final with a surprise 2-1 win over favourites the United States at a sold-out Georgia Dome. Darren Mattocks nodded home the first goal in the 31st minute, with Giles Barnes scoring a free-kick five minutes later. US captain Michael Bradley pulled one back early in the second half but the hosts were unable to break down a stubborn Jamaican defence again. “We cannot have a party now. We still have one more match,” said Jamaican coach Winfried Schaefer. “Bob Marley comes after the match.” (BBCsport)

Tour de France: Romain Bardet wins as Chris Froome stays ahead

Romain Bardet Romain Bardet delivered a second home win in this year’s Tour de France as leader Chris Froome remained unscathed by a second day of climbs in the Alps. AG2R rider Bardet, 24, beat a breakaway group to the top of the 1,924m Col du Glandon and, with 34km remaining of stage 18, eked out a decisive lead. Pierre Rolland finished 33 seconds behind to complete a French one-two. Britain’s Froome stays three minutes 10 seconds ahead of Colombia’s Nairo Quintana with three stages remaining. As happened during stage 17, 30-year-old Froome and Team Sky withstood several attacks on the 186.5km route from Gap to Saint-Jeande-Maurienne. But there was little p a n i c a m o n g F r o o m e ’s disciplined team, and the Te a m S k y l e a d e r l o o k s confident of repeating his triumph of 2013. A l e j a n d r o Va l v e r d e remains third with Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas, 29, fourth. It was Welshman Thomas who was once again the driving force behind Team Sky’s defensive manoeuvres, and was on hand to help out Froome on a couple of occasions, with the Briton looking susceptible for the first time this year, if only for a few fleeting seconds. Vincenzo Nibali and Alberto Contador made moves away from the yellow jersey group on the 21.7km grind up Col du Glandon, but were both reigned in. It was on the winding, hairpin riddled ascent of Montvernier that Nibali had Froome grasping for a food sachet in his back pocket. Thomas was able to keep the Italian in contact and even though Froome had drifted to

the back of the group, he soon rekindled his familiar form and was able to sprint to the line with his general classification contenders. There is an expectation in France that Bardet will go on to become a future Tour winner, and he signalled his potential with a break from the leading group on the Col du Glandon. T he Auvergne-born rider finished sixth overall last year, and was greeted at SaintJean-de-Maurienne by a euphoric French crowd, with the home support having witnessed only one French winner so far in this Tour. While the race for yellow remains somewhat sedate, the battle for the king of the mountains jersey is heating up. Joaquim Rodriguez won the first five climbs of the day to surpass Froome at the top of the leaderboard, but Bardet’s victories on the final two ascents means the pair are locked on 68 points in the competition for the polka dots. Froome and Bardet’s bikes were two of six tested for the presence of a motor in the frame after the stage. Cycling’s governing body the UCI carries out checks as a matter of practice. Froome has had to defend himself this week after the legitimacy of his performances had been questioned, and he welcomed the tests. With two more stages to come in the Alps, before Sunday’s procession into Paris, anyone hoping for a closer affair between Quintana and Froome will draw on the Colombian’s proven strength in the mountains. Stage 19 on Friday travels 138km from Saint-Jean-deMaurienne to La Toussuire where, three years ago, Froome left Bradley Wiggins

on the climb before being ordered to wait for his teammate. (BBCsport) Stage 18 result 1. Romain Bardet (France) AG2R 5hrs 3mins 40secs 2. Pierre Rolland (France) Europcar +33secs 3. Bolt and Farah under spotlight in London Usain Bolt’s suspect hip and Mo Farah’s status as the golden boy of British athletics will come under scrutiny when both return to London’s Olympic stadium this weekend. The two-day so-called Anniversary Games, which incorporates a Diamond League meeting, features a glittering cast but six-times Olympic gold medalist Bolt is the undoubted top of the bill when he goes in the 100m on today. The world record holder has looked a long way from the unbeatable sprinter who elevated track and field above the murky waters of its dopestained past with stunning 100m/200m doubles at the Beijing and London Olympics. This season though he is yet to dip below 10 seconds in the 100 and missed the recent Jamaican trials with a troublesome hip injury. He has not run a 100m since April in Rio. Bolt’s fitness, and speed will be under scrutiny a month before the world championships in Beijing when American Justin Gatlin, on fire this season, will be itching to have a crack at him. There will be no showdown in London, however, and a fit Bolt looks a strong favorite ahead of European record holder Jimmy Vicaut of France, who ran 9.86 seconds in Paris three weeks ago. “The race tomorrow (today) will definitely determine whether I’ll race again before Beijing. I have two 100s to make it right,”

Jamaica’s Usain Bolt during a press conference. Action Images via Reuters / Matthew Childs Bolt said at news conference yesterday. “But when I get to championships I always make sure I’m ready! I’m definitely excited for Beijing, maybe a bit nervous. I set the bar quite high last time I ran there.” With twice-banned Gatlin causing a stir in the athletics world, a sharp 100m by Bolt would be a timely PR boost for a sport still mired in suspicion — most recently allegations surrounding Alberto Salazar, coach to Britain’s 5,000m and 10,000m Olympic champion Farah. Farah has stayed loyal to Salazar, who is being investigated by both USADA and UK Anti-Doping over allegations that he has violated doping rules and will run the 3,000m, also today. Although there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Farah, it has been an uncomfortable few months for the Briton who, after his extraordinary feats

on the those balmy nights in London three years ago, could apparently do no wrong. “It’s not a nice thing but at the same time, I answered everything that I can and it’s not in my control, it’s nothing to do with me,” Farah told ITV this week. “I’m very excited to be able to go back in that stadium and compete in front of my home crowd.” Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill, another with golden memories of London 2012, will compete in a variety of events, beginning today with the 100m hurdles which includes 2008 Olympic champion Dawn HarperNelson. Kenya’s Olympic champion David Rudisha, who broke the world record en route to 800, gold in the Stadium three years ago, lines up over the same distance. (Reuters)

Problems would never be solved in the courts - WICB head at Town Hall Meeting By Zaheer Mohamed President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Whycliff ‘Dave’ Cameron said that problems affecting Guyana’s cricket would never be solved in the courts. Speaking at the board’s Town Hall meeting held on Wednesday night at the Georgetown Cricket Club, Cameron pointed out that having mediation and getting rid of personality issues is the way forward. The Town Hall meeting is a series of conferences which started in Barbados in May. It aims to give cricket fans and administrators across the Caribbean an opportunity to air their concerns directly to the heads and provide valuable ideas to develop the game in the Region. In his opening remarks before entertaining questions from the audience, Cameron extended congratulations to the Guyana Amazon Warriors on their success so far in the CPL, adding that he can’t recall any such crowd at any stadium in the Caribbean of recent. He explained that the Board is looking at ways to improve the draft system for the Professional Cricket

WICB President WICB Whycliff Dave Cameron (right) addresses the gathering. At center is Vice President Emmanuel Nanthan and GCB Secretary Anand Sanasie is at left. League (PCL) and said that there is a need to improve the club structure which is of utmost importance to the game in the Region. Vice President Emmanuel Nanthan stated that cricket belongs to the people and the CPL matches confirmed that the vigor for the game is still very much alive in Guyana. Nanthan said that Guyana has a rich history in cricket and thanked a nation which assisted him administratively. In response to issues plaguing Guyana’s cricket including several court battles, Cameron, informed that he had a meeting with Minister of Education with

responsibility for Sport, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine, and they have unearthed a way forward for Guyana’s cricket. Attorney-at-law Emily Dodson raised several questions concerning women’s cricket. She said that there is a need to have age group cricket for females and they should be given similar rewards as their male counterparts since they are ranked higher. Cameron explained that the WICB has 10 females on retainer contracts and they will be hosting Pakistan Women’s team in the near future. Former Director of the

WICB Claude Raphael said that ‘Free and Fair’ elections must be held to resolve the issues affecting Guyana’s cricket. He said that the Berbice Cricket Board has not received any subvention from the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) of recent. Former West Indies allrounder Roger Harper raised concerns of the ranking system in the PCL, stating that promising players are sometimes not being given a fair opportunity. He argued that talented T20 players should be given an opportunity to showcase their talent so that they can gain selection in the CPL. Former Guyana batsman Mark Harper queried about the High Performance Centre (HPC). Among other concerns raised was the sacking of Shivnarine Chanderpaul from the Test team, Schools cricket, WICB’s subvention to the GCB and the MOU/CBA for players and the state of pitches in the Caribbean. In addressing some of the issues, Cameron said that a ranking system was used to select players the board is looking at ways to improve the PCL. The WICB boss indicated that they are looking at staging a T20 development tournament with the territories so players

can be spotted. Cameron said that the HPC has been replaced with the High Performance Programme. “What we have is a programme at the said venue where we identify players who need special attention to move to the next level. The programme also helps to prepare our A, Under-19 and female teams. West Indies cricket is important to Regional

integration and we need to find a way of having the best players representing us,” he added. He said that Chanderpaul is very special to West Indies cricket and the board will honour him appropriately. “For too long players have not been given the king of farewell that is befitting of their contribution,” said Cameron. The WICB head explained that schools cricket will be back in Guyana and they will assist with the equipment and also help to organise the competition. He said that the schools will be attached to a club so players can move on to the next level, stating that the WICB will work with the GCB for the growth of first division cricket here. Cameron told the gathering that the board has employed a curator to look at the pitches and make recommendations. He expressed gratitude to the Guyanese public for their input.

Novice boxing c/ships postponed Those amateur boxers that were supposed to have graced the ring tonight for the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Novices Boxing Championships will now be required to temper their enthusiasm since the Guyana Boxing Association organizers have decided to postpone the tournament. Kaieteur Sport was unofficially informed that the new date for the championship is 7-9 August. This newspaper was not officially informed of these developments since tournament Director, Terrence Poole, apparently did not regard as important, the dispensation of such information. Notwithstanding,

APOLOGY Kaieteur News’ edition of Thursday, July 23 inadvertently published that the quarter-finals of the Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Competition was set to be played tomorrow, at various venues. However, the correct date for the quarter-finals is Sunday, July 26 with four matches planned, at various venues. Over in Linden at the Wisburg ground, defending champions Christianburg / Wismar play hosts to Annandale at 16:00 hrs. Last year’s beaten finalist Waramadong travel to Burnham Park in Berbice to take on Berbice High School also from 16:00 hrs. The other two matches will see Chase Academy tackle Charity at a venue to be announced, while Dolphin, who has replaced Sir Leon Lessons, opposes Annai also at a venue to be named.

our source disclosed that the boxers were told of the postponement which came devoid of an explanation. The Novice Boxing tournament is for beginners and is usually the first tournament, staged during the early part of the year thus making way for the Intermediate and the Open Boxing Championships. It is still a puzzle why the tournament was planned at such a late stage of the year and even then it seems as though the organizers are still to put the requisite modalities in place. Efforts to contact Mr. Poole failed as his cell phone was first turned off during the morning and subsequently rang out in the afternoon. When the tournament eventually gets underway, boxers from several gyms will vie for top honours. The intense rivalry between the boxers of the Republican Boxing gym and those from the Guyana Defense Force will resume but fans could also expect slugfests from pugilists out of several other gyms including the Forgotten Youth Foundation, Young Achievers, Harpy Eagles, Ricola and Caryll’s Boxing Gym among others. Kaieteur Sport will report on other details over the coming week.

Trinidad and Tobago is expected to send Mark London for the 800m Male race and Tonya Nero for the 1500m and 3000m Women, along with another athlete. Suriname’s 2014 bronze medallist in the 100m at the meet, Danielle Clarke will also return. G r e n a d a ’s K e n i s h a Pascal will compete in the 1500m Women and St. Vincent and the Grenadines Josh Hamilton will battle in the 100m and 200m sprint events. Boyce said that the 2015 meet will be an International Track and Field Classic with the influx of athletes from the Caribbean. Sponsors lauded the efforts and commitment to development of the Boyce & Jefford Organisation while Director of Sport, Christopher Jones pledged the support of Government and National Sport Commission (NSC) to the Organising Committee and the meet. “The NSC is committed to sport and youth development. I give my personal commitment and the commitment of Government to be on board for years to come,” Jones stated, adding that the work of the Boyce/Jefford Organisation in sports is commendable. Events and Sponsorship Manager of the main sponsor, Digicel Guyana Inc., Gavin Hope said that the meet is the most prestigious athletics competition in Guyana and urged all and sundry to assist in “making this meet the biggest in the history of Guyana”.

Local athletes and clubs represented yesterday at the launch of the Boyce/Jefford Track and Field Classic VI pay keen attention to Chairman of the Organising Committee, Colin Boyce (left, head table) while other stakeholders and officials share the moment.

“We applaud the efforts and successes of the Boyce & Jefford Organisation for sticking with it. I applaud them. They have produced tremendous success; from one international athlete to having a club (Jamaica) coming now is tremendous development,” Hope said. He informed that Digicel has been on board from the inception and will continue to support what has definitely become a significant calendar event for sports in Guyana. “I want to urge you guys to continue to contribute to the development of athletics in Guyana,” he added.

Another foundation sponsor, Ansa McAl under its Smalta Brand, echoed similar sentiments when Non-Alcoholic Brand Manager, Anjeta Hinds said that it is one of the focuses of the company that they assist in helping youths grow and develop. “We are so happy; this is not small initiative. I always applaud Boyce & Jefford for the ways that they keep this event growing. I have no doubt that we will continue to be on board,” Hinds stated, adding that Guyana will produce its own successes in athletics. Sales Executive at

Caribbean Airlines, Dion Inniss, commended the Organisers for sustaining the meet in Linden despite the “temptation” might have developed to shift it to the Synthetic Facility at Leonora. Inniss said that sports and events have to be decentralised. “Let me congratulate you gentlemen in persisting in hosting this event. I know the difficulty that is involved in organising events of this magnitude. You may have been tempted to move away the event to the new facility, but I am happy you resisted that temptation,” Inniss said. “I am happy you stuck

with Linden and hopefully now that the Government is on board, the event will grow from strength to strength,” Inniss added. The Boyce & Jefford Committee had indicated that they will not move the meet from its birthplace, Linden. Co-Founder of the meet, Edison Jefford disclosed that with this being the sixth year, six or seven gate prizes will be given away to the value of $250,000 to lucky patrons. Those include $30,000 cash, a smart phone, food hamper, his and her watch set and a 10 pennyweight gold chain among other items. The meet begins at 1pm each day.

Anticlimax for Mitchell Rogers as world title fight hopes postponed By Michael Benjamin Recently crowned World Boxing Federation (WBF) Caribbean heavyweight champion Mitchell Rogers’ hopes of fighting for the heavyweight version of the WBF world title has suffered a slight setback following clarifications by the regional agent and from all indications the Guyanese pugilist will have to wait a mite longer to fulfill his ambitions. This much was revealed by Barbadian promoter and WBFCaribbean representative, Sam Layne when Kaieteur Sport spoke with him via telephone last Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Layne exuded surprise at Rogers’ claim and said that he has never committed to a rating or a world title crack for him. “Rogers is WBF Caribbean heavyweight champion and it may be possible for him to fight for the world title in the future but that fight is not

immediately available,” said Mr. Layne. The WBF (Caribbean) representative said that Mitchell’s recent achievement has created new opportunities and once the Guyanese pugilist handles the situation correctly he could clinch the coveted title shot. However, King feels that Rogers should carefully plan his course in the interim so as to improve his chances for a win whenever the (world) title fight materializes. “He should challenge one of the other heavyweight champions for a bigger title, like the Intercontinental title and improve his chances to fight for the world title,” opined Mr. Layne. He further noted that the situation demands Mitchell having the management team with the contacts that can create these opportunities. “Another option is that Rogers may have someone in the Caribbean to promote the world title. I may then be

able to assist them as the supervisor,” said Mr. Layne. Kaieteur Sport engaged Mr. Rogers afterwards and he admitted that the promise of a world title fight did not originate from Mr. Layne but rather from former Trinidadian boxer, Floyd Trumpet who had promoted the Caribbean title bout. The Trinidadian had promoted the card in Port of Spain between Rogers and Manswell and Rogers admitted that it was he (Trumpet) that had mentioned the possibility of Rogers clinching the world title bout after he (Rogers) had won the Caribbean belt. Meanwhile, Mr. Layne said that in the interim he has engaged his contacts in Europe and is currently negotiating a non title fight for Rogers. He said that negotiations are in the preliminary stages but the bout seems a surety once Rogers agrees to the conditions. For his part the Guyanese

heavyweight pugilist revealed that Mr. Layne has hinted at an interest in a managerial contract. He (Rogers) said that he is contemplating his options. He said that in the interim he will continue training to remain in shape. At 35 years old Mitchell envisions himself in the ring for another five years. During that time he intends to win as many titles as possible but said that his focus is currently on winning the world title. He has since appealed to members of the corporate community for assistance in his preparations. Mitchell is thankful for the support received from several individuals and singled out popular promoter, Keith Bazilio, whose input has been the lynchpin of his career. The late world rater, A n d r e w M u r r a y, a l s o received kudos for his role in Mitchell’s career as his coach, Sebert Blake.

Lady Jags to face defending Digicel School football champions today

T

he Guyana senior N a t i o n a l women’s football team – the Lady Jags – will play their final match today, from 17:00hrs at the Leonora Track & Field and Football facility against three-time defending champions of the Digicel School’s Football c h a m p i o n s h i p , Christianburg/ Wismar Secondary School of Linden. The team under Head Coach Mark Rodrigues is winding down their weeklong camp ahead of next month’s Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Olympic Qualifiers in the Dominican Republic. In the absence of an International friendly as was proposed and announced by Rodrigues, the Lady Jags Head Coach resorted to first facing a Georgetown Under1 7 b o y ’s t e a m i n a

scrimmage at the same venue on Wednesday last, losing 4-2 after Ashlee Savona and Donna Joseph had given them the early lead. But Rodrgues said that he wanted tougher opposition; one that will force his players to play the type of football that got them to the 2010 Gold Cup and believes that the nation’s top school’s football team would suffice. Coach of the Christianburg/ Wismar team, Anthony Stephens said that he’s happy for the opportunity to face the National female team, adding that the game will give his troops the perfect opportunity to put what was being taught in their practice sessions into action. The defending champions and the most successful school in the country’s most prestigious

Guyana’s flagship senior female team, the Lady Jags

tournament, will be playing Annandale Secondary on Sunday at home in Linden and Stephens said that his players understands what’s at stake and as such, will be taking today’s game seriously. Stephens said that he warned his players about being lackadaisical against the ‘Lady Jags’, since the team didn’t get the title of b e i n g G u y a n a ’s m o s t successful football team at all levels by luck. The Lady Jags he said are a physical bunch and should his players think that they are playing the ‘regular girls’ a rude awakening is on the horizon. Game time is 17:00hrs.

Next Level SC Inter-Corporation Domino postponed

T

he Next Level Sports Club sixth annual InterCorporation Domino Competition and family Fun Day which was set to commence today and end tomorrow at Banks DIH, Thirst Park has been postponed due to the staging of opposing competitions organised for the same date. Bravos spearhead Red Steel - books spot against to 27-run win Warriors tomorrow By Sean Devers in Trinidad In association with Stag Beer, Bounty Supermarket, Noble House Seafoods, Leisure Inn & Payless Varity Store A breathtaking unbeaten 86 from 63 ball decorated with four fours and six sixes from Man-of-the-Match Darren Bravo and a five wicket haul from his brother Dwayne provided the T&T Red Steel with a big 27-run win over the Jamaica Tallawahs to book a place against the Guyana Amazon Warriors tomorrow in the second Hero CPL Play-off game at the Queens Park Oval last night. The 26-year-old lefthanded Bravo passed his highest T20 score of 82 not out and added 80 from 62 balls with Jason Mohamed who made 28 from 25 to take the home Franchise to 152-6 from a precarious 18-3. Jermaine Taylor took 228 for the Tallawahs who were bowled out 125 off 19.3 overs as Dwayne Bravo

captured 5-23 from fours overs to take his wicket tally to 26, 10 more than the second highest wicket-taker. Chris Gayle, who much rested on if his team were to win, hit Jacques Kallis for a four behind point off the third ball of the innings and hammered the South African for consecutive sixes, fell in the fifth over after adding 38 with Mahela Jayawardene. Gayle’s cameo 30 from 21 balls and included two fours and three sixes and his early demise started a nonstop party in the party Capital of the World. Jayawardene stroked two delightful boundaries to get his innings started and along with Chadwick Walton was just beginning to build a recovery when a shocking Umpiring decision by Austrailan John Ward give the Sri Lankan caught at slip off his forearm off Suleiman Benn for 16 at 662 in the 9th over. Chadwick Walton and Jermaine Blackwood pushed the score to 97 before Blackwood (23) departed to Bravo in the 14th over to bring Russell to the crease but when the dynamic Bravo bowled Russell (6) at 104-4 in the 16th over and Walton bowled by Kevin Cooper for

a 30-ball 31, six runs later it was the end of the road for the Tallawahs. Earlier, the Red Steel won the toss and opted to bat on a two-paced track as the Tallawahs made a couple of forced changes leaving out the injured Rusty Theron and Daniel Vettori who had to leave because of illness to his daughter but were off to a terrible start. Cameron Delport was bowled by Krishmar Santokie at 3-1in the opening over. Kallis, who did not seem to want to bat, was badly dropped at third man by Nikita Miller off Santokie as the ball went for four. Preparation of a number of the match venues has been affected, following recent torrential rainfall, so this has prompted the local organising committee to request starting the tournament one day later than scheduled on Friday, July 24, with a few venue adjustments. “The WICB and the Guyana Cricket Board see it as very important that every effort is made for the participants to play, so while some displacement is possible, the over-riding factor is cricket being played,” said Roland Holder,

manager for cricket operations of the WICB. As a result, the venues have changed for three matches and the Albion Sports Complex is now carded to host two of them. The rural venue hosts Guyana vs Trinidad & Tobago in Friday’s opening round and Barbados vs Jamaica the following day in the second round of matches. The other change sees Leeward Islands face the Barbadians on Friday at

Enmore in the opening round. (A revised schedule is below). The Tournament – in its 20th year – will be contested under a round-robin format, featuring five rounds of matches with the team accumulating the most points being declared champions. The Regional Under-15 Tournament commenced in 1996 with then hosts T&T taking the inaugural title. They hold the record for the most RU15 titles with seven, also winning the title in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2010 and 2013. Reigning champions Guyana have claimed the top prize three times comprising back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999, plus last year. Jamaica have won the title (Continued on page 38)

wicket at 7-2 in the 4th. Darren Bravo got going with a majestic cover drive off Santokie and pulled Russell for six while Kamran Akmal slapped Taylor behind point for a boundary but was soon dismissed for six at 18-3. Bravo and Mohamed joined forces and launched ‘operation rebuild’ as they added 80 runs from 64 balls for the fourth wicket stand much to the enjoyment of the less than capacity crowd who were dancing in stands to spicy Tassa drumming in the sunset of the Twin Island

Republic. Mohamed stroked offspinner Narsingh Deonarine behind point for four while Bravo smashed Taylor to the boundary before dumping Andre Russell for a flat six and raced to his second 50 in this competition from 42 balls while Mohamed edged Taylor for four to gallop into the 30s. Bravo spanked Taylor for an audacious boundary through point and the Trini fans decked out in red, loved it. But Mohamed, who hit 28 from 25 balls, tried to hit Deonarine out of the ground

but only succeeded in being caught at long on. Bravo wadded into Santokie and clobbered him for a massive six at the start of the 16th over. The left-arm pacer followed it up with three wides under a clear night sky and brightly shining floodlights. Dwayne Bravo (5) was soon taken in the deep off Miller at 121-5 in the 17th over but his younger sibling was not done yet and pounced on Taylor and smashed him for four while Cooper hit the West Indies pacer back over his head for six. Cooper (9) was caught and bowled by Russell at 137-6 and Johan Botha handed Bravo the strike off the first ball off the final and the crowd were chanting ‘ B R AV O , B R AV O ’ a s Santokie ran in. The elegant Bravo hit a six onto the sightscreen to go past his highest t20 score of 82 not out but could only manage four more runs off the over which cost 11.
