She must make them believe that she’s having fun, so they don’t discover what’s wrong. Hears that her laughter is as shrill as a squeaky bike brake going down a steep hill. But she gets them to laugh. Loudly. Her mother likes that she has friends visiting and is always very nice. Prepares food for them. They eat, and drink cocoa. She and the girls from school. They dance in the big empty room on the first floor because nobody lives there right now. They play records. Tango, waltz and rock. Mostly rock. She can’t remember the names of the songs or who is singing. With one exception. Elvis. Blue Suede Shoes. She’s nauseated even before they begin, and sometimes falls. Not only when she dances. «Sit down,» her mother says gently. The two of them are alone; her sister has gone to bed. «You’ve been gaining weight?» her mother continues. She’s seen it. Understood it. There was more than just rock music and dancing with the electrical student. The truth will out, as they say. The truth always comes out. Her mother’s only reproach is to say she was crazy to hike across the mountains without telling anyone about her condition. «I didn’t know, didn’t believe it, couldn’t believe it,» she insists in a shrill voice, but then gives up. At first it’s quiet. Terribly quiet. You’d think several days had gone by before her mother finally speaks: «Well, I’m sure things will work out.» But she can hear that her mother has misgivings. The big round stove in the living room is cold. It has cast iron designs and reaches almost to the ceiling. Her mother has just blackened it and washed her hands, and now offers her the towel to blow her nose. Blacking and cloths lie in a cardboard box by the coke bin. «Please clean up this mess I made. While sorting through her mother’s belongings, Cecilie comes across a meticulous list detailing every single gift the members of her family have exchanged over a period of four decades; gifts received and given by a number of individuals who have suffered highly diverse fates and fortunes. Taking this list as her starting point, Cecilie Enger chronicles her family history from the late 19th century till today. At the same time, she also tells another story. Over the course of the two years it takes her to write Mother’s Gifts, her mother’s memory and personality gradually disintegrate and vanish. This novel is a story about gifts, memories and our desire to cling on to time. It has been six months since mother, highly confused, got into a strange, blue car without asking where she was being taken. My sister held her hand and a friendly municipal councillor drove down the gravel path and past the gate. Mother wasn’t entirely at ease, but she kept looking lovingly down on Little Vøv, who rested in the elegant leather handbag on her arm, with just one eye, flattened nose and a bandage on his right paw; his material roughly woven, light brown on the dog’s belly, his ears brown and black. They had been together since her third birthday, in 1938. I turn away from the window and notice a loose drawer by the wall. It used to belong to her desk, the one we got rid of. The drawer is full of papers. I pick up some of them. Graduation papers from 1952 and a note from her GP about back pains. Songs for anniversaries, confirmations, and weddings – and an FB marked “1942-1948”. When you get old and nobody wants you Climb up on the roof and give yourself to the crows And a stack of cheap, grey paper, held together by a large clip. I sit down on the floor and leaf through the pages. Columns, names, objects. These are gift lists for Christmas, neatly numbered. The first list is from 1963, the year I was born. The last is from 2003. Some of the names I know well – cousins, aunts and uncles. Others are just vague memories, of white hair, tightly tied in a bun at the back of the neck– of dark clothes and magnificent moustaches. I suddenly recall people I´ve forgotten: Mrs Hansen, who used to clean for us in the early 70s, and who would let me help her out while telling me the lewdest stories. And those freaky, young neighbours, who smelt of spices and sweat, went about naked in the summer months and read books they always wanted to discuss with my mother. THE linguist Ellinor Smidt is quite unexpectedly offered a research post in Finnmark. As part of a larger project on dying languages, her task is to survey the usage of a Sami language. The writer Helene Uri receives a phone call that is quite as unexpected. On the other end of the line she hears a northern Norwegian voice claiming to be a relative of hers. It turns out that Helene Uri’s great grandfather was Sami, a fact no one in the family has ever mentioned. One story is true, the other is ﬁction. Both grew out of Helene Uri’s mourning process following the loss of her mother. Combined, the two stories form a moving novel about southerners and northern lights, about language and family, about words and belonging. And about the fact that things and people can disappear and be gone forever.

I’m planning to write a novel about Finnmark, about an Oslo woman, Ellinor Smidt and her ﬁrst meeting with the Sámi language. I hadn’t thought of telling her that, but that is the novel I’m going to write, so I’m going to have to say no to libraries for a while. But the woman says something completely different. She says that she’s a relative. She’s calling from Hammerfest, she says, and she is the grandchild of my paternal grandfather’s sibling. Oh, I say, and my hand is so numb with cold that I change my grip, because I’m scared I might drop my phone. She’s been doing some research into the family and wondered if she could have dates of birth for me and my sister, our spouses (she actually says spouses, which makes it sounds so formal) and my children. Someone else is trying to get hold of me, I hold my phone out from my ear and see that it’s my friend. But I carry on talking to the woman from the north of Norway, give her the dates. I say that I’d like to see the family tree when she’s made it, could she maybe email it to me? She doesn’t have email, she says, but she can send it to me in the post when it’s ready. My friend, whom I was supposed to meet ten minutes ago, is still trying to get hold of me, I can tell from the brief interruptions to my conversation with my relative whose name I can’t remember. I’m afraid I have to go now, I say. The hand that has been holding the phone is frozen numb. And so is my friend, no doubt. All the same, I save the number on my mobile before I call her back. I don’t know what the ﬁve of them were imagining when they were picked up one morning a few weeks later. Perhaps they were informed where they were going. Perhaps not. Perhaps they told Lilly, who after all was seventeen and perhaps not mentally deﬁcient, just retarded, and who from now on would act as a kind of mother to the other four. Perhaps they told her; perhaps she nodded and pretended she understood. They had no luggage, no possessions, only the new clothes they were wearing. Lilly gathered her brothers and sister around her, the care staff took their leave of them and then they were led into the street to the black car waiting for them. The sea was grey and choppy, showers of sleet drifted across the fjord, and as they were driven along the Jæren coastline, the weather brightened and they could see the curve of the sea on the horizon. They drove through Egersund and Flekkefjord, the car turned up towards the Kvinesheia hills, and once on top they could have turned and still glimpsed the sea in the distance. It was a journey of more than two hundred kilometres. When they arrived in Mandal it was already dark. The car turned north and continued alongside the river. The air was getting colder, the drifts at the side of the road were growing, the snow shone blue in the juddering light of the headlamps and soon they were passing through a black forest. As he put it himself, he would never have gone on an expedition merely to sit on a raft. The journey must have some higher goal. But during the trip with Tigris, something had gone wrong. More than a scientific expedition, the passage seemed to transform into a fairy tale journey in exotic, oriental surroundings, more or less like the tales of Sinbad the Sailor from Arabian Nights. Tigris was not all that burned as the licking flames enveloped the ship’s mast and sails. The very essence of the expedition seemed to disappear in the fire. Although it was a noble enough idea in itself, Thor Heyerdahl hadn’t ventured to sea in order to demonstrate his disgust with war and misery. Measured against the original ambitions that guided the project, the Tigris expedition must be regarded as a failure. From a scientific point of view it could never compete with the Kon-Tiki expedition, hardly even with Ra. He had already proved that a reed boat could stay afloat over a long period of time, even though that had been one of the expressed goals of the expedition. Tigris has come to be remembered for its anti-war message and the flames, not for its quest for The Beginning. It was his protest against violence on the Horn of Africa that brought Heyerdahl renewed attention, not so much the journey itself. For Thor Heyerdahl, however, this passage with Tigris would carry a more personal significance. As he stared into the flames, he also bid the ocean farewell. The Norwegian Heavy Water Sabotage Asgeir Ueland IN the winter of 1942 the young agent Einar Skinnarland was dropped by parachute over Hardangervidda, the huge mountain plateau in central southern Norway. His mission was to gather intelligence on the Germans’ heavy water production at Norsk Hydro’s plant in Vemork. Later, he was joined by the rest of the sabotage team, and they started the long process of planning an attack on the plant. This is a story about an isolated life on meagre rations in the mountains, nerve-racking preparations and the final minutes before the explosives detonated in the plant. However, the explosion didn’t mark the end of the operation, not by far. With German soldiers on their heels, the saboteurs had to flee for their lives. And the Germans soon resumed their production of heavy water. For the first time, a Norwegian author has written the full story of the heavy water sabotage. Ueland has consulted foreign archives and sheds new light upon the sabotage team and the political tug of war between the Norwegian government in exile and their allies. The History of the 50 Km Cross-Country Skiing Race Thor Gotaas THE world’s ﬁrst 50 km cross-country skiing race was held on February 7, 1888. Several of the runners waiting at the starting line in Holmenkollen had smoked pipes to enhance their lung capacity. The winner, Torjus Hemmestveit, was rewarded with 400 kroners worth of gold. Capacities such as Matti Koskenkorva, Thomas Wassberg, Thorleif Haug and Petter Northug Jr. have a natural place in the history of the 50 km race. But the race is just as much about industrious labourers who worked as lumberjacks when they weren’t competing on skis. Success depended on more than mere athletic skills. The Swedes believed in three metre skis, the Finnish imagined loose bindings were the key, the Norwegian competitors preferred hilly terrain. Some carried herring in their inner pockets, ready to spread under the skis if conditions got slippery, while others opted for fox grease, cream and honey.
