On every page there are thirty five, perhaps forty names in the first column. These are the people my parents gave Christmas presents to. In the next column my brother Elling´s name appears, then my own, and when my sister, Anne Johanne, was born she too got her column - indicating what she had given to some of these relatives. And at the back of each sheet: a list of the presents my parents got in return - and from whom. And the same for us children - every year accounted for until we turned eighteen. All these gifts she recorded. Pondered, planned, purchased, crafted, inherited. Wished for and provided with. All in all there must be thousands of them. FROM CECILIE ENGER’S MOTHER’S GIFTS

These Moments Herbjørg Wassmo

“An intense novel about coming of age under harsh circumstances in the north, revealing and wellwritten ... Wassmo crowns her work as a writer in a dense, well-composed text ... breathtaking descriptions of nature.” GURI HJELTNES, VG

“a brave and passionate story – about the life of a writer, of a woman, of a human being.”

THESE Moments is a novel about a writer’s life from adolescence till she is a full-fledged artist. Herbjørg Wassmo writes about lack of self-confidence and the struggle to become something, about dreams and a steadfast will to be creative. It is also the story of Norway’s recent history, about education and family life in a time wrought with changes. It is about yearning for a love she doesn’t believe in, and about betrayal. And about being sensitive to impressions and enclosed in your own stubbornness. Most of the story takes place in an expansive and challenging northern Norwegian landscape, and it is related by a narrator who is generous, tender and somewhat self-ironic, even when life is harsh. Here we meet a woman who does things she doesn’t really dare to do, who transcends taboos and paves a way that is completely her own.

Sample translation from the book

She must make them believe that she’s having fun, so they don’t discover what’s wrong. Hears that her laughter is as shrill as a squeaky bike brake going down a steep hill. But she gets them to laugh. Loudly. Her mother likes that she has friends visiting and is always very nice. Prepares food for them. They eat, and drink cocoa. She and the girls from school. They dance in the big empty room on the first floor because nobody lives there right now. They play records. Tango, waltz and rock. Mostly rock. She can’t remember the names of the songs or who is singing. With one exception. Elvis. Blue Suede Shoes. She’s nauseated even before they begin, and sometimes falls. Not only when she dances. «Sit down,» her mother says gently. The two of them are alone; her sister has gone to bed. «You’ve been gaining weight?» her mother continues. She’s seen it. Understood it. There was more than just rock music and dancing with the electrical student. The truth will out, as they say. The truth always comes out. Her mother’s only reproach is to say she was crazy to hike across the mountains without telling anyone about her condition. «I didn’t know, didn’t believe it, couldn’t believe it,» she insists in a shrill voice, but then gives up. At first it’s quiet. Terribly quiet. You’d think several days had gone by before her mother finally speaks: «Well, I’m sure things will work out.» But she can hear that her mother has misgivings. The big round stove in the living room is cold. It has cast iron designs and reaches almost to the ceiling. Her mother has just blackened it and washed her hands, and now offers her the towel to blow her nose. Blacking and cloths lie in a cardboard box by the coke bin. «Please clean up this mess I made. I’m going to fix us something to eat,» says her mother and leaves. Translated by Nadia Christensen

Mother’s Gifts Cecilie Enger

PRESS CLIPPINGS FROM CECILIE ENGER’S LAST NOVEL, THE CHAMBER MAID:

“This is a beautiful little novel about a bygone age at the royal palace.” GURI HJELTNES, VG

“The author employs minute, but precise tools in this story, and the novel turns out to be a subdued and gripping portrait of an extraordinary life.”

SEVERELY afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease, Cecilie Enger’s mother is forced to move into a nursing home. As a consequence, Cecilie’s childhood home has to be emptied and sold. While sorting through her mother’s belongings, Cecilie comes across a meticulous list detailing every single gift the members of her family have exchanged over a period of four decades; gifts received and given by a number of individuals who have suffered highly diverse fates and fortunes. Taking this list as her starting point, Cecilie Enger chronicles her family history from the late 19th century till today. At the same time, she also tells another story. Over the course of the two years it takes her to write Mother’s Gifts, her mother’s memory and personality gradually disintegrate and vanish. This novel is a story about gifts, memories and our desire to cling on to time. Mother’s Gifts is a novel about the shaping of Norway as a modern nation, narrated with the use of artefacts and recollections.

It has been six months since mother, highly confused, got into a strange, blue car without asking where she was being taken. My sister held her hand and a friendly municipal councillor drove down the gravel path and past the gate. Mother wasn’t entirely at ease, but she kept looking lovingly down on Little Vøv, who rested in the elegant leather handbag on her arm, with just one eye, flattened nose and a bandage on his right paw; his material roughly woven, light brown on the dog’s belly, his ears brown and black. They had been together since her third birthday, in 1938. I turn away from the window and notice a loose drawer by the wall. It used to belong to her desk, the one we got rid of. The drawer is full of papers. I pick up some of them. Graduation papers from 1952 and a note from her GP about back pains. Songs for anniversaries, confirmations, and weddings – and an FB marked “1942-1948”. When you get old and nobody wants you Climb up on the roof and give yourself to the crows And a stack of cheap, grey paper, held together by a large clip. I sit down on the floor and leaf through the pages. Columns, names, objects. These are gift lists for Christmas, neatly numbered. The first list is from 1963, the year I was born. The last is from 2003. Some of the names I know well – cousins, aunts and uncles. Others are just vague memories, of white hair, tightly tied in a bun at the back of the neck– of dark clothes and magnificent moustaches. I suddenly recall people I´ve forgotten: Mrs Hansen, who used to clean for us in the early 70s, and who would let me help her out while telling me the lewdest stories. And those freaky, young neighbours, who smelt of spices and sweat, went about naked in the summer months and read books they always wanted to discuss with my mother. And my mother´s friends, who all had cute nicknames. On every page there are thirty five, perhaps forty names in the first column. These are the people my parents gave Christmas presents to. In the next column my brother Elling´s name appears, then my own, and when my sister, Anne Johanne, was born she too got her column – indicating what she had given to some of these relatives. All these gifts she recorded. Pondered, planned, purchased, crafted, inherited. Wished for and provided with. All in all there must be thousands of them. I spend a good while studying these notes. Clearing out Helene Uri

“Convincing solemnity and stylish simplicity.” ANNE MERETE K. PRINOS, AFTENPOSTEN

“From a literary point of view, this is one of Helene Uri’s most exciting books (…) executed with a living presence and an inquisitiveness that is bound to spellbind.”

THE linguist Ellinor Smidt is quite unexpectedly offered a research post in Finnmark. As part of a larger project on dying languages, her task is to survey the usage of a Sami language. The writer Helene Uri receives a phone call that is quite as unexpected. On the other end of the line she hears a northern Norwegian voice claiming to be a relative of hers. It turns out that Helene Uri’s great grandfather was Sami, a fact no one in the family has ever mentioned. One story is true, the other is fiction. Both grew out of Helene Uri’s mourning process following the loss of her mother. Combined, the two stories form a moving novel about southerners and northern lights, about language and family, about words and belonging. And about the fact that things and people can disappear and be gone forever.

Sample translation from the book

I’m planning to write a novel about Finnmark, about an Oslo woman, Ellinor Smidt and her first meeting with the Sámi language. I hadn’t thought of telling her that, but that is the novel I’m going to write, so I’m going to have to say no to libraries for a while. But the woman says something completely different. She says that she’s a relative. She’s calling from Hammerfest, she says, and she is the grandchild of my paternal grandfather’s sibling. Oh, I say, and my hand is so numb with cold that I change my grip, because I’m scared I might drop my phone. She’s been doing some research into the family and wondered if she could have dates of birth for me and my sister, our spouses (she actually says spouses, which makes it sounds so formal) and my children. Someone else is trying to get hold of me, I hold my phone out from my ear and see that it’s my friend. But I carry on talking to the woman from the north of Norway, give her the dates. I say that I’d like to see the family tree when she’s made it, could she maybe email it to me? She doesn’t have email, she says, but she can send it to me in the post when it’s ready. My friend, whom I was supposed to meet ten minutes ago, is still trying to get hold of me, I can tell from the brief interruptions to my conversation with my relative whose name I can’t remember. I’m afraid I have to go now, I say. The hand that has been holding the phone is frozen numb. And so is my friend, no doubt. All the same, I save the number on my mobile before I call her back. Relative, I write. Translated by Kari Dickson

Across the China Sea Gaute Heivoll

“Gaute Heivoll composes beautiful prose about the greatness of small things. Across the China Sea is a story full of warm comedy.” VG

“He has done it again. This is Heivoll at his very best.” HAMAR ARBEIDERBLAD

“A powerful read.”

JUST before the Second World War a married couple opens their own care home for the «mentally deficient». In addition to their little family of four – father, mother, son and daughter – their rooms are soon filled with patients: the religious brooder Christian Jensen; the silent Matiassen, forever sitting and rocking to and fro, and Uncle Josef, one of the best-read people in the district. After a while a group of five brothers and sisters also move in. Josef calls them simply «the boobies from Stavanger» but nevertheless they soon become part of this motley family. The war ends, but those living in the little «madhouse» will have anything but peace. For soon they are to suffer a tragedy that will pursue them for the rest of their lives. With a story based on real events Gaute Heivoll has written a deeply humanistic novel about defenceless individuals, the ties between brothers and sisters and a mother’s lifelong love for her child.

Sample translation from the book

I don’t know what the five of them were imagining when they were picked up one morning a few weeks later. Perhaps they were informed where they were going. Perhaps not. Perhaps they told Lilly, who after all was seventeen and perhaps not mentally deficient, just retarded, and who from now on would act as a kind of mother to the other four. Perhaps they told her; perhaps she nodded and pretended she understood. They had no luggage, no possessions, only the new clothes they were wearing. Lilly gathered her brothers and sister around her, the care staff took their leave of them and then they were led into the street to the black car waiting for them. The sea was grey and choppy, showers of sleet drifted across the fjord, and as they were driven along the Jæren coastline, the weather brightened and they could see the curve of the sea on the horizon. They drove through Egersund and Flekkefjord, the car turned up towards the Kvinesheia hills, and once on top they could have turned and still glimpsed the sea in the distance. It was a journey of more than two hundred kilometres. When they arrived in Mandal it was already dark. The car turned north and continued alongside the river. The air was getting colder, the drifts at the side of the road were growing, the snow shone blue in the juddering light of the headlamps and soon they were passing through a black forest. The Realm of Grace (2011)

IN 1528 a young, travelling Fransiscan monk stays for a short period in Bergen before he goes north. His luggage contains a large assortment of knives and a piece of untreated hide. Almost five hundred years later, a flayed corpse appears in a museum in Richmond, Virginia, and another crops up in a book vault in Trondheim. Both incidents seem to be tied to to a strange old text written on parchment, The Book of John. This is the first novel featuring the Norwegian police inspector Odd Singsaker and the American murder investigator Felicia Stone. It is a story of dissection, ancient books, gruesome murders and wounds that need time to heal.

Dreamless (2012) In 1767 a poor troubadour flees Stockholm after offending the daughter of one of the city’s mightiest men. That same year the naked, unidentified body of a man is found on the breakwater outside Trondheim. The bulimic and cantankerous constable Nils Bayer has a difficult case on his hands. In the winter of 2011 a young woman is found murdered in Trondheim. The killer has removed the victim’s larynx and placed a music box that plays an unknown melody on top of the body. Odd Singsaker has few leads to go on. When a sixteen-year-old girl disappears, Singsaker fears the worst. These crimes are committed nearly 250 years apart. But they appear to have one thing in common: a mysterious lullaby that promises eternal sleep.

The Scarlet Room H.K. Fauskanger IN the basement of the manor farm Ugge in Østfold there is a sealed room called the scarlet room. Rumour has it that the vicar who built the farm in the eighteenth century sold his soul to the devil, and the legend says that anyone who spends a night in the scarlet room will either die or lose their mind. In 1897 the rationalist Fredrik Lange decides to put this myth to the test by allowing himself to be locked in the room for a night. He is accompanied to Ugge Farm by the British medium Celia Fay, her interpreter Oskar Brattenschlag and the satanologist Jon Lauritz Quisling, who has also brought along his young son Vidkun. A few hours after Lange has entered the room, a heart-wrenching shriek pierces the air. When they open the scarlet room, Lange had disappeared without a trace. There don’t seem to be any hidden doors. A couple of days later, a heavily mutilated corpse is found floating in a lake nearby.

A Young Man’s Confessions of Love Frode Saugestad

“Free from inhibitions, without respect for boundaries, and intensely self-revealing ... This is revolting and attractive at the same time, and if one disregards all moral and ethical concerns, this is also a fascinating literary project.”

A YOUNG Man’s Confessions of Love opens with the words «Dear Daddy». The novel is a montage of confessions, YouTube links, short movies, private letters and allegedly authentic quotes from interviews given by Frode Saugestad to newspapers and magazines, and, not least, printouts from a paternity case that, according to the heading dates, has circulated in the Norwegian legal system for 30 years. Frode Saugestad’s first novel is an aching and honest story about yearning, lost childhood, contaminated love and self-loathing, and about how an apparently successful human being purposely decides to ruin himself through lack of love in order to arise as a new person.

This magnificent work on Thor heyerdahl is completed. in 1977, at the age of 63, Thor heyerdahl launched his papyrus ship Tigris in the Persian Gulf. half a year later, he set fire to Tigris. Gazing into the flames, he bid the ocean farewell. Thor heyerdahl was hungry for recognition from the academic world, but he also refused to submit to scientific methodological demands. in The Man and the Myths the reader meets a man whose insatiable curiosity drove him to pursue his greatest passions. he received recognition for his research on the pyramids in Tucume and for his early engagement in environmental issues. his theories pinpointing Norse Mythology’s Asgard in the Black sea region, however, were met with dumbfounded resignation. The price heyerdahl paid for a life dedicated to controversial theories was a turbulent domestic situation and consistent negation from the scientific community. Ragnar Kvam jr. is the first biographer to gain access to all the documents heyerdahl left behind, and the readers will find plenty of new material here.

Sample translation from the book

TOWARDS evening on the 3rd of April 1978, the men gathered for a final, mournful meal aboard Tigris. Then – in the scarlet light of a setting sun – they ignited the ship using a homemade firebomb with a timing device. In order to broadcast his act of protest, Thor Heyerdahl penned a letter to UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, which they all signed: “Our planet is bigger than the reed bundles that have carried us across the seas, and yet small enough to run the same risks unless those of us still alive open our eyes and minds to the desperate need of intelligent collaboration to save ourselves and our common civilization from what we are about to convert into a sinking ship.” The world viewed Thor Heyerdahl as an adventurer, a label he himself didn’t think much of. As he put it himself, he would never have gone on an expedition merely to sit on a raft. The journey must have some higher goal. But during the trip with Tigris, something had gone wrong. More than a scientific expedition, the passage seemed to transform into a fairy tale journey in exotic, oriental surroundings, more or less like the tales of Sinbad the Sailor from Arabian Nights. Tigris was not all that burned as the licking flames enveloped the ship’s mast and sails. The very essence of the expedition seemed to disappear in the fire. Although it was a noble enough idea in itself, Thor Heyerdahl hadn’t ventured to sea in order to demonstrate his disgust with war and misery. Measured against the original ambitions that guided the project, the Tigris expedition must be regarded as a failure. From a scientific point of view it could never compete with the Kon-Tiki expedition, hardly even with Ra. He had already proved that a reed boat could stay afloat over a long period of time, even though that had been one of the expressed goals of the expedition. Tigris has come to be remembered for its anti-war message and the flames, not for its quest for The Beginning. It was his protest against violence on the Horn of Africa that brought Heyerdahl renewed attention, not so much the journey itself. For Thor Heyerdahl, however, this passage with Tigris would carry a more personal significance. As he stared into the flames, he also bid the ocean farewell. When all was said and told, the ocean itself had never held any great attraction for him – other than as a location for scientific research. Translated by Jan Chr. Næss

The Norwegian Heavy Water Sabotage Asgeir Ueland IN the winter of 1942 the young agent Einar Skinnarland was dropped by parachute over Hardangervidda, the huge mountain plateau in central southern Norway. His mission was to gather intelligence on the Germans’ heavy water production at Norsk Hydro’s plant in Vemork. Later, he was joined by the rest of the sabotage team, and they started the long process of planning an attack on the plant. This is a story about an isolated life on meagre rations in the mountains, nerve-racking preparations and the final minutes before the explosives detonated in the plant. However, the explosion didn’t mark the end of the operation, not by far. With German soldiers on their heels, the saboteurs had to flee for their lives. And the Germans soon resumed their production of heavy water. For the first time, a Norwegian author has written the full story of the heavy water sabotage. Ueland has consulted foreign archives and sheds new light upon the sabotage team and the political tug of war between the Norwegian government in exile and their allies. But first and foremost, this is a unique story of patriotism, sacrifice and heroism.

Female Eyewitnesses Stories from the Holocaust

Jakob Lothe “IF we had observed a minute of silence for each of the six million Jews that were murdered, we would have stood still for twelve years,” says 87 year old Blanche Major from Oslo. In Female Eyewitnesses. Stories from the Holocaust, Major and nine other Jewish women talk about their horrifying experiences from Auschwitz, Theresienstadt, Bergen-Belsen and other Nazi concentration camps. Surrounded by soldiers, dogs and electric fences, the young girls had one goal in common: to survive. In this book they tell about the humiliation, hunger and despair they experienced. But here are also stories of dignity, solidarity and hope. Each fate is unique, but taken together they display an unbreakable will to live and an astonishing lack of bitter feelings. Female Eyewitnesses is a book that tells the story about what happened and what must never happen again.

Jakob Lothe (b. 1950) is a writer, a literary scientist and Professor of English Literature at The University of Oslo.

The Papayas in Gombolo

Planting a Dream in Africa

Anne Louise Hübert IN the autumn of 2008, 19 year old Anne Louise Hübert visits the famished Kenyan village of Gombolo. Here, the young backpacker encounters a population burdened by hopeless poverty, draught and food scarcity. It makes a deep impression on her. Instead of travelling on, she starts a project to gather money in order to feed the school children and organise dam projects. Anne Louise decides to found her own company to import bags made by the village women. She sets one condition: The bags must be business, for the women in Gombolo and for herself. Anne Louise isn’t a welfare worker – she ignites hope, stages planting competitions and drills for water. Today Gombolo has more than 30,000 papaya trees, two wells that provide water for 20,000 people and 300 women engaged in producing bags. And Anne Louise Hübert has only just begun. This wonderful book is an inspiring story about making a difference.

Anne Louise Hübert (b. 1989) runs the welfare organisation Aid in Action and studies medicine at The University of Oslo. The Papayas in Gombolo is her first book.

The History of the 50 Km Cross-Country Skiing Race Thor Gotaas THE world’s first 50 km cross-country skiing race was held on February 7, 1888. Several of the runners waiting at the starting line in Holmenkollen had smoked pipes to enhance their lung capacity. The winner, Torjus Hemmestveit, was rewarded with 400 kroners worth of gold. Capacities such as Matti Koskenkorva, Thomas Wassberg, Thorleif Haug and Petter Northug Jr. have a natural place in the history of the 50 km race. But the race is just as much about industrious labourers who worked as lumberjacks when they weren’t competing on skis. Success depended on more than mere athletic skills. The Swedes believed in three metre skis, the Finnish imagined loose bindings were the key, the Norwegian competitors preferred hilly terrain. Some carried herring in their inner pockets, ready to spread under the skis if conditions got slippery, while others opted for fox grease, cream and honey.

Thor Gotaas (b. 1965) is a specialist in folklore, a writer and a lecturer. He has published around twenty books.
