Bird Lisa Aisato A BEAUTIFUL and melancholic picture book. – Can I go with you? the girl asks. – No, say the birds, you are too big and heavy for us to carry. If only you looked like a bird and had your own wings … Lisa Aisato has made a beautiful and melancholic picture book about a girl who wishes she could fly away with the birds when cold winter approaches. But in order to fly like a bird you need wings, feathers and preferably a beak too. In other words, the girl faces a daunting and perhaps impossible task. But if you really want something and wish hard enough for it, you can do it. Even if it only happens one small bird step at a time.

Block Makes a Commotion

THIS time Block wants to play in a marching band! He opts for the trumpet and starts to rehearse for the big band concert. But Block has a problem – no matter how much he practices and reads and drills, he still doesn’t get the notes at all. To Block they all look like birds on a wire. So he pretends to play when the conductor looks his way, but in reality he doesn’t make a sound. That wouldn’t have mattered one bit, hadn’t the conductor decided to let Block play a solo at the concert ... how on earth will he do that?

Block Makes a Museum BLOCK likes to collect things he finds in the forest. There are so many treasures out there, he thinks. He takes all these treasures home and puts them in nice boxes. But one day all the boxes are full! So Block opens a museum of his own. The museum is a great success. Almost too much, so Block thinks ... is he really supposed to have to queue up to go to his own bathroom for the rest of his life?

Operation Thunder Cloud WHO is behind the – to put it mildly – strange burglaries in Elvestad? No one is able to see any pattern in what is going on in Elvestad that summer. Baker Monsen’s whole supply of yeast is stolen, the barrels for the new bathing pier are taken from the beach, and in the park someone has helped themselves to all the juniper bushes. The list of stolen items grows longer and longer – and more and more bewildering. Tiril and Oliver fumble in the dark, but rather surprisingly the hound Åtto leads them in the right direction. This is an exciting and entertaining detective story for young bookworms.

Operation Night Man OLIVER has a dramatic bicycle accident – who caused it? Oliver’s misfortune with the bike at Sletta may be a minor incident, but whoever it is who has dug all those holes, ought to pay for a new wheel. Tiril’s and Oliver’s investigations lead them to the desolate Rønneberget and an encounter with the Night Man. And then they find a mysterious map, and the case takes a new turn. If they are to solve the mystery, they will have to use their imagination, where both the past and the present are concerned.

The Viking Farm Unn Pedersen DID you know that in the Viking age, almost everyone lived on farms and that children didn’t go to school? Or that many people were born into slavery, while wealthy children were sent away to be raised by foster parents? We accompany town girl Tora when she goes to visit her cousin Ravn. Twelve short stories take us to the burial mounds, into the woods to fell timber, and we learn how the Vikings prepared for Yule, how they sacrificed to their gods and what daily chores life on a farm consisted of. The stories are based on what archaeologists and scientists have unearthed through their examinations of graves, jewellery, sagas, flower pollen, house remains teeth and skeletons. Pym Petterson’s Failure of a Pen Pal Heidi Linde HERE comes the third book in the super-popular series about the failure (in her own view, anyway) Pym Petterson. Linde’s readers have high expectations, and they won’t be disappointed! Pym’s school class is hosting a group of pupils from a partner school in Northern Sweden. To prepare for the visit, the pupils have been exchanging letters. Pym’s designated pen pal is Kajsa Stina, a girl who is more than just slightly interested in horses. And because Pym wishes to be sociable and forthcoming, she has given the impression that she, too, is passionately devoted to horses. Truth be told, they terrify her. But nothing turns out like Pym had expected. Kajsa Stina never shows up, and instead Pym has to partner up with Alex, a boy who only recently joined the Swedish class. Alex acts disinterested and silent and makes no effort whatsoever to be liked by his classmates. So they don’t like him. However, the Swedish pupils are so mean to him that Pym decides to champion him! It turns out that Alex is a quite different character than Pym had expected, and she faces a few surprises in the process of getting to know him.

“Comedy for young readers is very

popular, but female heroes are sorely missing. So Pym is a highly welcome addition to the bookshelf, and she certainly holds her own.”

And now she is supposed to write a true story about them. How can she possibly do that? Even her name is a mistake, like most other things in her life. She is the youngest sister in a completely ordinary, boring family that consists of Mum, Dad and the twins Sigmund and Sanna, who quarrel all the time. Pym is interested in space, she does things her own way and questions almost everything. And she considers her life a total failure.

Pym Petterson’s Failure of a School Trip A HILARIOUS, scary, positive, wise, sparkling sequel to Pym Petterson’s Failure of a Family. Pym and the others were really looking forward to camping outdoors in the woods, but when their teacher, Hilde, gets hit by a car and breaks her leg, one of the school’s scariest teachers, George «The Jaw» Jawson, has to substitute for her. Why is Water So Wet? Ole Robert Sunde AN INTELLECTUAL picture book novel for grown up children and childlike grown ups from Ole Robert Sunde. One thing all children have in common is the immense task of having to understand how the world is built up and how it works. And if it is true as they say, that adults have lost that curiosity, then that is a crying shame! Why not try to write a children’s book where the main issue is seeing, hearing, feeling and touching? The optimal setting is the bed, just when a boy wakes up from a scary and strange world (night) only to encounter another (day). Lying in his bed, he daydreams. He plays his way into that place where everything is possible, the precise spot where the bed can turn into a car, and the car can drive through the bedroom wall and out on to the lawn and straight on to the sea, where the boy transforms the car into a submarine. This boy has a family, and today is Saturday, which means no school, and bacon and eggs for breakfast. Only one thing casts a shadow over the family idyll: The Child Witch – his sister and nemesis. She has also woken up, and she is in a quarrelsome mood …

Ole Robert Sunde was born in Kristiansand in 1952. Today he resides in Oslo. He has been awarded the Aschehoug Prize as well as the Gyldendal Prize for his oeuvre. His latest novel, The War was My Family’s

The Ballad of a Broken Nose Arne Svingen WINNER of the Ministry of Culture’s Literary Award, shortlisted for the Brage Prize and the Critics’ Award. Moskus film has bought the movie rights for the book and are currently in the process of turning it into a motion picture. Rights have been sold to 8 countries so far.

“The Ballad of a Broken Nose is perhaps one of his very best stories. It is cleansed of anything resembling children’s book clichés and dull language. It is about being slightly different, about invisible poverty, friendship and not least, about daring.”

“The Ballad of a Broken Nose is the uncommonly exciting and funny story of an uncommonly sad teenage life. It is only early February, and I have already read one of this year’s best Norwegian children’s books.” DAGBLADET “It is a long tie since I felt so captivated by a book as I did by Arne Svingen’s tender story about 13 year old Bart. Bart hails from the same rough streets as Pitbull-Terje and Rubber Tarzan, but he has a personality that is all his own.”

“Arne Svingen interweaves light and darkness, tragedy and comedy into an exceptionally well composed novel. He has created a character that would be a catch for any film director. In my view, Arne Svingen is an author who only gets better and better.”

AFTENPOSTEN

“An incredibly beautiful piece of social comedy featuring a charming, helpless protagonist. (…) Svingen writes with such a sense of humour that it makes our heart ache.”

Fly Summer

FLY SUMMER is a story about Kasper, a boy who dreams of becoming a pole vaulter. He gets a fly in his mouth and climbs a rather high mountain. And he has a very angry father. One day Bentein moves into the neighbourhood. He wears a turtleneck sweater and is pretty irritating. A disaster is unavoidable. Arne Svingen has done it again! Just like The Ballad of a Broken Nose, Fly Summer is a touching, wise novel with a dark theme. It gives a moving portrait of Kasper, a resourceful kid who copes in a harsh world.

“It makes me happy to find books for young people which are both challenging and entertaining. Svingen has many readers, and his books have been sold to several countries. That’s no surprise, since he manages to write stories which you immediately feel you can believe in, instead of appearing to stem from the mind of an adult.”

MARI NYMOEN NILSEN, VG

“A tender and powerful book about violence at home.”

This Is Where I’m Supposed to Be Hilde Hylleskaar MARTINE was involved in a tragic accident as a child. She was badly injured, and her grandparents were killed. Neither Martine nor her surroundings realise that there is a connection between the tragic incident and the problems she struggles with now: her feeling of being all alone even with friends, of observing the world through a haze, of not belonging. She feels a growing desire to go away, leave the world. One day, however, she meets a psychologist who poses questions that make things happen, and gradually the reader and the main protagonist discover the secret riddle that has haunted Martine’s life. An essential novel for young adults about freeing oneself from the shadows of the past. Many young people are haunted by traumatic experiences. This story engenders optimism and shows that life can open up again and take a turn for the better, no matter how dark the events of your past may be.

But there are worse things than children of Odin, and Hirka isn’t the only being that has passed through the gates … NEW WRITER

Bian Shen Torbjørn Øverland Amundsen WOULD you live forever, trapped in the body of a child? Bian Shen is the first book in a trilogy about a group of children that have lived for thousands of years. Tomorrow is Arthur’s 14th birthday, but he knows he will die during the night. He also knows that he will wake up in a new body, helpless as a new-born infant, but with all his memories and feelings intact.
