It seems that we will finally start to travel again: we will find refreshed rivers and a lot of enthusiasm to set off on our expeditions again. In this issue I am pleased to publish a piece on fishing guides, some reflections on their importance and professionalism. The red card goes to the complete absence of an Italian policy that has led to disarray the management of fishing guides. Lately pseudo-schools for guides have been training not very competent and professional figures.

But Italy is also this: few fish, looted and poorly managed rivers but fishermen full of badges and certificates. As far as advertising is concerned, inside you will find some interesting pages showing our new partnership with the Russian Нахлыст magazine, introducing us to prestigious lodges and quality rivers.

Enjoy the reading Sembra proprio che piano piano finalmente si ricominci a viaggiare: troveremo fiumi riposati e tanto entusiasmo per ricominciare a fare le nostre spedizioni. In questo numero trovo anche lo spazio per pubblicare un pezzo sulle guide di pesca e soffermarmi sulla loro importanza e la loro professionalità. Il cartellino rosso va alla completa assenza di una politica italiana che ha portato allo sbando la gestione delle guide di pesca. Sono nate infatti pseudo-scuole per guide che formano figure poco competenti e professionali. Ma l’Italia è anche questa: pochi pesci, fiumi depredati e mal gestiti ma pescatori pieni di patacche e di certificati. Per quanto riguarda la pubblicità, all’interno troverete qualche pagina interessante grazie alla nuova partnership con gli amici russi della rivista Нахлыст, che ci sta facendo conoscere lodge prestigiosi e fiumi in cui pescare.

Da tempo volevo scrivere un pezzo sulle guide di pesca, i nostri compagni di pesca essenziali di cui si parla spesso prima, durante e dopo un viaggio di pesca. Gli aneddoti si sprecano, e le guide di pesca diventate famose sono tantissime, sicuramente più dei pescatori stessi. Chi non ha sentito le mirabolanti imprese di Cochi ai Giardini della Regina a Cuba? E chi non si ricorda delle grosse trote che faceva catturare Jorge Trucco alla Boca del Chimehuin in Patagonia, ora sostituito egregiamente dal figlio? O quel maledetto di Jorge in Terra del Fuoco che maltrattava i clienti che lanciavano male sul Rio Grande pescando le trote di mare? Personalmente con alcune guide ho un legame molto stretto, e non mi permetterei mai di andare

nel “loro” fiume senza prima averli consultati. Lo stesso vale per molti miei amici e conoscenti, si stringe un rapporto talmente stretto che non si riesce più ad affrontare un fiume senza di loro.

Un legame simile al rocciatore con lo sherpa, un legame che va al di là della pesca, costruito in giorni e giorni di pesca insieme, nelle giornate spettacolari e in quelle dove è meglio lasciare perdere e fare due chiacchiere parlando di altro. Una cosa a cui invece non riuscirò mai ad abituarmi è il poco rispetto e fiducia di alcuni clienti nei confronti delle guide di pesca. Va detto che questo problema è tipico di quelli che hanno viaggiato poco, e non riuscire ad instaurare un rapporto interessante e proficuo con le proprie guide vuole dire non aver capito che il 90%

I have long wanted to write a piece about fishing guides, our fishing mates that are often talked about before, during and after a fishing trip. There are lots of anecdotes about them and several fishing guides have become famous, surely more than fishermen themselves. Who has not heard about Cochi’s amazing endeavours at the Queen’s Gardens in Cuba? And who does not remember the big trout that you could catch at the Boca del Chimehuin in Patagonia with the help of Jorge Trucco,

who has now been optimally replaced by his son? Or that damned guy, Jorge in Tierra del Fuego, who used to maltreat clients launching badly on the Rio Grande while fishing the sea trout? Personally, I have a very close connection to some guides, and would never dare to go on “their” river without previously consulting them. The same goes for many of my friends and acquaintances, you get so close to that you cannot face a river without them. It is a connection like that of the rock climber with

Devo anche dire che spesso questo atteggiamento lo si trova solo in alcuni paesi, in altri succede l’esatto contrario, cioè c’è la corsa ad accaparrarsi la guida migliore, spesso prima di partire da casa, e a volte facendola inserire nel contratto di vendita della settimana di pesca. Alcuni anni fa avevo coinvolto

i pochi amici italiani che sapevano cos’era una guida di pesca per formare una decina di giovani ragazzi in Trentino per il progetto Trentinofishing. I risultati sono stati molto positivi, visto che dopo un paio d’anni abbiamo ripetuto il corso per un'altra ventina di partecipanti. I requisiti per partecipare al corso comprendevano la conoscenza discreta di un paio di lingue e circa 200 ore da dedicare al progetto. Abbiamo parlato di regolamentazione della pesca in Trentino, organizzato un

What I will never get used to is the lack of respect and trust of some clients towards fishing guides. It must be said that this problem is typical of those who have not travelled much, and that failure to establish an interesting and fruitful relationship with the guides means not having understood that 90% of the success of your holiday depends on them. How many times have I heard the sentence: “… but I do not like guides, I’d better do it myself.”

I must also say that this attitude is often to be found only in a few countries, while in others it is exactly the opposite, i.e. people rush to get the best guide, frequently before leaving home, and they sometimes have him included in the sales contract for the fishing week. Some years ago I involved my few Italian friends,

who knew what a fishing guide should be, to train about ten young fishermen in Trentino for the Trentino fishing project. The results were very positive, since we repeated the course after a couple of years for another 20 participants. The requisites to take part in the course included a fairly good knowledge of two languages and about 200 hours to devote to the project.

We talked about fishing regulations in Trentino, organized safety training in cooperation with the fire brigade, dealt with financial problems connected with a job which does not exist in Italy, and spent a lot of time on the river for on-site training. Now, a couple of years after that course, I am pleased to note that some of them have reached very good levels of competence.

They approach the client very professionally and have nothing to envy to the top level guides that I often encounter in lodges abroad. They are indeed making a job out of it. Of course we are

Ovviamente siamo in Italia, dove l’improvvisazione regna sovrana e ultimamente sono sorte numerose scuole per guide di pesca ”professioniste”, siti dedicati e pagine Facebook, spesso da parte di chi probabilmente non ha mai speso un euro

per pagare una guida. Purtroppo in Italia questo lavoro non è riconosciuto e tremo all’idea che qualcuno possa approfittare della situazione. Credo che molti pescatori a mosca italiani non resisteranno al fascino di una patacca in stoffa da cucire al gilet da pesca con la scritta ben visibile "guida di pesca", insieme alle altre patacche dei certificati delle scuole di pesca. Li farà sicuramente sentire i migliori pescatori del pianeta, quindi mondo della pesca a mosca preparati all’invasione delle guide di pesca italiane, gente tosta che sa il fatto suo.E anche se non ci sono pesci e fiumi decenti in cui guidare i clienti fa lo stesso, le patacche brilleranno al sole come le stelle degli sceriffi del Far West.

in Italy, where improvisation reigns supreme, and some schools for “professional” fishing guides have recently appeared, together with dedicated websites and Facebook pages set up by people who have probably never spent a euro to pay a guide. Unfortunately, this job is not acknowledged in Italy. It is not registered and this leaves some room for manoeuvre for the less competent too. I think that many Italian fly fishermen will not resist the charm of a patch of fabric stitched to the fishing

waistcoat, with the well visible writing "fishing guide" on it and with some other certified stuff from the fishing schools. This will certainly make them feel like the best fishermen on the planet, and therefore the world of fishing must prepare to be invaded by the Italian fishing guides, tough guys who know their way around. It will not matter if there are no fish and decent rivers to guide the clients to. Those fake writings will shine like the stars of the Far West sheriffs.

Potatoes, gemstones and Yellowstone National Park aren't the only things worth the trip to Idaho. The diverse state is home to 26,000 miles of streams and rivers and over 3,000 natural lakes - yes 3,000 - that offer year-round fishing opportunities.

In Idaho, anglers can enjoy casting their lines for 42 different types of game fish species, including giant white sturgeon, wild trout, smallmouth bass and salmon.

It’s a gorgeous day in Swan Valley, Idaho — perfect for floating and fishing the South Fork of the Snake River. Temps are in the 80s, the skies cobalt blue, and I see a bald eagle flying overhead as we turn the corner on the South Fork and tuck into a willowlined side channel, an oxbow of the big river. In the secluded

side channel, mayflies are dancing on the water’s surface, but I’m fishing with a Dave’s hopper since it’s warm and sunny.

Throw the Yellowstone fine-spotted cutthroats a big hunk of meat! What the heck! I cast about 30 feet downriver to a subtle eddy line with my fly rod. The brilliant sunlight sparkles on the water and lights up the yellow and red body of the hopper. And then I see a big cut rise up high and gobble that fly. I set the hook, yelling “fish on!” to my partner. I enjoy a fun fight in the side channel. I bring him toward my net, and then I hear one of our dogs growl. I look up and it’s a bull moose with huge antlers on shore. Ah yes, I say to my fishing partner, gotta love the South Fork! Gotta love Idaho! The South Fork is one of the top blueribbon trout streams in the state of Idaho, if not the nation. The

E poi vedo una grande increspatura che sale in alto e travolge la mosca. Ferro e grido “pesce!” al mio compagno di pesca. Mi diverto a lottare nel canale laterale. Lo porto verso il mio guadino e poi sento uno dei nostri cani ringhiare. Alzo lo sguardo e vedo sulla riva un alce maschio con grosse corna. Ah sì, dico al mio compagno di pesca, non si può non amare il South Fork! Non si può non amare l’Idaho!

In this story on Idaho trout waters, I will recommend five sure-fire places to catch trout — on a do-it-yourself level, or in the lap of luxury on a guided trip.

SOUTH FORK SNAKE RIVER Cuts and brown trout are the main fish to catch. Plus, it’s a premium 25-mile canyon, bordered by mature cottonwood forests, with many channels and islands to explore. Multiple pairs of bald eagles nest there and hunt the river year-round.

It’s a spectacular wilderness experience just 30 minutes from Idaho Falls. The South Fork Lodge in Swan Valley provides lodging, guide services, shuttle services, and they’ve got a great fly shop. Be sure to inquire about what flies are working.

There are all kinds of custom foam bugs that work well, but the preferred flies are changing all the time. Do your own trip or hire a guide and sleep in a cabin on the banks of the South Fork.

Lo stesso si può dire del vicino Henrys Fork, celebre in tutto il mondo per la sua entusiasmante pesca a guado della trota iridea con mosca secca. Situato nel cuore delle Montagne Rocciose settentrionali, l’Idaho è pieno zeppo di ruscelli da trote di ottimo livello, ce ne sono centinaia di miglia. Ma dove volete cominciare?

Dove iniziare? In questa rassegna dei corsi d’acqua da trota dell’Idaho, vi suggerirò cinque posti infallibili in cui prendere trote — a livello di fai-da-te oppure nel lusso più sfrenato di un viaggio guidato.

IL SOUTH FORK DEL FIUME SNAKE Le trote cutthroat e fario sono i pesci principali da prendere.

Inoltre, è un canyon di qualità lungo 25 miglia, delimitato da foreste mature di Populus trichocarpa, con molti canali e isole

da esplorare. Diverse coppie di aquile di mare ci fanno il nido e perlustrano il fiume tutto l’anno. È un’esperienza spettacolare di natura incontaminata a soli 30 minuti dalle cascate dell’Idaho.

Il South Fork Lodge a Swan Valley offre alloggio, guide, servizi navetta, e ha anche un bel negozio di mosche. Chiedete quali mosche funzionano. Ci sono tutti i tipi di insetti in foam che funzionano bene, ma le mosche preferite cambiano di continuo.

I’m excited for a great season.” You can fish many other sections of the Henrys Fork with guides or on your own. Try to time your trip with the salmon fly hatch or green drake hatch. Island Park is the home base with fly shops, hotels and restaurants. I recommend eating breakfast or dinner at the Trout Hunter in Island Park.

hour from Spokane, the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River is a choice spot for fly fishing for native west slope cutthroat trout.

Here you can drift along in a boat, and work the shorelines or riffles for trout. When it’s warm, dry flies work great! Cuts reaching over 20 inches can be caught here. Similar to the South Snake, you might see moose, black bear, elk or deer on the banks of the North Fork. Guided trips are available from Silver Bow Outfitters and ROW Adventures. After you’re done fishing, there are lots of great eateries and brew pubs to explore in Coeur d’Alene.

NORTH FORK COEUR D’ALENE RIVER Located about 45 minutes east of Coeur d’Alene or just about an

prima scelta per la pesca a mosca della cutthroat nativa del versante occidentale. Qui potete farvi trasportare dalla corrente su una barca e perlustrare le sponde o le rapide in cerca di trote.

Quando fa caldo le mosche secche funzionano alla grande! Qui si possono prendere trote superiori a 20 pollici. Hagerman Wildlife Management Area in the Thousand Springs region offer opportunities to catch large numbers of rainbows in a stream or pond environment. Special access docks provide an excellent platform for casting for seniors or kids. The Riley Pond and Oster Lakes have trout in them, and they get stocked on a regular basis from the nearby Idaho Fish and Game hatchery. Other ponds have crappie, bass and bluegill. “This is going to be a great year to catch big fish,” says Joe Chapman, hatchery manager at Hagerman. “If you want to catch fish, this is the place to come.” It’s all fishing on your own at Hagerman.You can fly fish or use a spin cast set up.When you get hungry, head for the Snake River Grill in Hagerman for a delightful meal.

BOISE RIVER – URBAN SECTION Fishing is open year-round on the Boise River. It’s a tailwater

fishery with cold water coming off the bottom of Lucky Peak Reservoir. Water quality is clean, and there are plenty of nice rainbow trout to be caught in the urban section of the river.

Idaho Angler provides guided fly fishing trips to help anglers cue into the right fly for the conditions and where to fish. Below Barber Park is a popular spot with pools and riffles, but there are a number of nice fish-holding pools right in the middle of the city. Brown trout can be caught farther downriver, west of Boise toward Eagle and Star. Next time, you’re doing in business in Boise, bring your fly rod and waders and give it a go! Subsurface fishing is usually best with nymphs and streamers. While you’re in Boise, treat yourself to a nice dinner in Idaho’s Capital city, or visit one of many night clubs in the downtown area.

Enjoy your trout fishing experience no matter where you go!

Idaho Angler fornisce viaggi di pesca a mosca guidati per aiutare i pescatori ad informarsi sulle mosche giuste per le condizioni atmosferiche e il luogo. Below Barber Park è uno spot popolare con laghi e rapide, ma c’è un certo numero di laghi con pesci in centro città. Le trote fario si possono prendere più a valle, a ovest di Boise verso Eagle e Star. La prossima volta che venite per affari a Boise, portate la vostra canna e i wader e provateci! Pescare sotto la superficie in genere funziona al meglio con ninfe e streamer. L’Austria è indubbiamente uno dei polmoni verdi del vecchio continente. Le sue montagne, i fiumi, i torrenti cristallini e un numero incredibile di laghi balneabili, affascinano innumerevoli appassionati della natura, pescatori inclusi. Non sorprende pertanto che la pesca, anche quella a mosca, abbia qui una lunga tradizione.

L’Alta Austria offre probabilmente alcuni dei paesaggi più emozionanti dell’intero paese. Confinante a nord-ovest con la Germania, a nord-est con la Repubblica Ceca, custodisce molte perle. Tra quelle più preziose la celeberrima cittadina di

Hallstatt, adagiata lungo le rive dell’omonimo lago; un borgo talmente bello da far sì che in Cina venisse costruita una copia pressoché identica.

Nella parte alta del Lago di Hallstatt nasce la Goiserer Traun, un fiume di rara bellezza che serpenteggia tra piccoli borghi alpini, verdi pascoli e fitti boschi. Qui il fiume è circondato da maestose montagne e si presenta con un alveo medio ampio, dai 20 ai 30 metri di larghezza; una conformazione tipica dei corsi d’acqua di fondo valle. Austria is undoubtedly one of the green lungs of the old continent. Its mountains, rivers, crystal clear streams and an incredible number of bathing lakes fascinate countless nature lovers, including fishermen. It is no wonder then that fishing, also fly fishing, has a long tradition here.

Upper Austria probably offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the entire country.

Bordering Germany to the north-west and the Czech Republic to the north-east, it protects a lot of gems. Among the most valuable ones is the famous town of Hallstatt, situated on the banks of the lake with the same name; the old town is so beautiful that an almost identical copy was built in China.

In the upper part of the Hallstatt Lake is the source of the Goiserer Traun, a river of rare beauty that snakes through small alpine villages, green pastures and thick woods. Here the river is surrounded by majestic mountains and shows up with a medium-large bed, 20 to 30 meters long; this shape is typical of waters along the valley floor.

This part is extremely natural, with long blades alternating with stretches with currents, and with beds of various depths and easily accessible banks.

About 4.5 kilometers of the Goiserer Traun are managed by the Hurch company founded over 20 years ago, which also manages a section of the Ischler Traun, for a total length of 3 kilometers downstream to the town of Bad Ischl.

Both stretches are characterized by a population of brown trout, including big lake trout, powerful rainbow trout and wonderful graylings, which can reach considerable sizes in these areas. It is very important to remember that the local ichthyofauna is natural, and no new entries have been made.

The high quality and naturalness of these waters are guaranteed by careful supervision, respecting the balance of nature. This makes management delicate and complex, as it is determined by weather changes, and the action of ichthyophagous birds and other predatory species like otter.

They are, nevertheless, well-populated watercourses, thanks to the high environmental quality, the almost total absence of pollution and a careful management of the pressure on fish stocks.

Circa 4,5 chilometri di Goiserer Traun sono gestiti dalla società Hurch, fondata oltre 20 anni fa, che qui governa anche un tratto di Ischler Traun, della lunghezza complessiva di 3 chilometri a valle della cittadina di Bad Ischl.

Entrambi i tratti sono caratterizzati da popolazioni di trote fario, incluse grosse lacustri, potenti trote iridee e meravigliosi temoli che in questi luoghi possono raggiungere taglie ragguardevoli.

E’ molto importante ricordare che l’ittiofauna presente è

naturale, qui non vengono effettuate immissioni. L’elevata qualità e naturalezza di questi corsi d’acqua è garantita da una supervisione attenta, nel rispetto degli equilibri naturali. Questo rende la gestione delicata e complessa, perché determinata dalle variazioni meteorologiche, dall’azione di uccelli ittiofagi ed altre specie predatorie come la lontra. Sono tuttavia corsi molto ben popolati, grazie all’elevata qualità ambientale, l’assenza pressoché totale di inquinamento e un’oculata gestione della pressione alieutica.

Copious hatches of mayflies are regularly visible from early spring to late autumn. Considerable eclosions of caddis flies and particularly of big stoneflies emphasize the high quality of these waters. Rainbow trout and graylings have high growth rates, and as a matter of fact, specimens of rainbow trout weighing about 3 kilos and graylings exceeding 55 centimeters in length are not rare.

Dry fly fishing, both on water surfaces of softer blades and along the stretches with fast moving waters and strong currents, is practically possible during the whole fishing season, with

memorable situations in early summer. Fishing with a sunken fly is equally fruitful.

Fishing with a nymph is also extremely exciting: if you practice it well, you can enjoy unequaled fights with powerful rainbow trout and big graylings.

In the stretches where the riverbed is larger and with regular currents, you can use the spey technique, with both switch rods and two-hand rods of limited length. The rainbow trout engage exceptional fights here, making several meters of backing come out of the reel. Occasionally you can catch big brown trout and

Le trote iridee e i temoli hanno tassi di crescita elevati, non sono infatti rari gli esemplari di iridee nell’ordine dei 3 chilogrammi di peso e temoli con lunghezze superiori ai 55 centimetri.

La pesca con la mosca secca, sia in bollata lungo le lame più morbide, sia in caccia lungo i tratti con acqua movimentata e correntizia, è praticamente possibile durante l’intera stagione di pesca, con situazioni memorabili ad inizio estate. Parimenti fruttuosa è la pesca con la mosca sommersa.

Estremamente catturante è inoltre la pesca a ninfa, che, se ben praticata, regalerà combattimenti impareggiabili con potenti iridee e grossi temoli.

Nei tratti in cui l’alveo del fiume risulta più ampio e con correnti regolari è possibile impiegare la tecnica spey, sia con delle canne di tipo switch che con canne a due mani nelle lunghezze più contenute.

Le trote iridee qui ingaggiano dei combattimenti eccezionali, facendo fuoriuscire diversi metri di backing dal mulinello. Occasionalmente è possibile catturare grosse fario e importanti salmerini.

La società Hurch gestisce altre due piccole gemme in questa parte di regione austriaca, sono il Rettenbach e il Weissenbach, due meravigliosi torrenti alpini. Corsi d’acqua di rara bellezza che scorrono in un contesto paesaggistico mozzafiato.

Entrambi i torrenti sfociano nella Traun.

Il Rettenbach ha importanti popolazioni di trote fario lungo tutto il suo corso, nella parte bassa si possono facilmente catturare trote iridee e temoli che risalgono dalla Traun. La parte alta del torrente rimane lontana dai centri abitati e offre un'incomparabile esperienza naturalistica.

Il Weissenbach è un corso d’acqua unico nel suo genere. Le sue acque cristalline e fondali bianco latte ospitano trote fario di taglia ragguardevole, talvolta al limite dell’incredibile, specie se rapportate alle dimensioni dell’alveo. Il tratto gestito ha una lunghezza complessiva di circa 6 chilometri. Qui la pesca è consentita solo con la guida.

Questi corsi d’acqua sono a mio avviso delle “pietre preziose”, luoghi accomunati da incredibili bellezze paesaggistiche, pur risultando l’uno diverso dall’altro. I desideri e le volontà dei pescatori più esigenti saranno pienamente appagati.

Escher is generally considered an artist who is dearer to scientists, particularly mathematicians, than to others. His works are, in fact, often used to illustrate mathematics and geometry books. They can be found on covers of scientific books, or they illustrate the cultural pages of newspapers, articles of various contents, but always somewhat connected to science. Escher, however, is not just loved by mathematicians, as in the last decades his fame has expanded far beyond the scientific environment, and his exhibitions, which are now taking place all over the world, beat all records as for the number of visitors. During his life, Escher did not have the acknowledgments he has today, and his relationship with the world of art, especially with critics, was a difficult one. His technical mastery as an engraver was uncontested, but his works were considered as poorly artistic.

Some art critics still consider his works as tortuous and cold today despite his public success. During his life Escher had to wait till the 1960s, when he was already 60, to get some acknowledgements. It was on the occasion of an exhibition held in 1954 in Amsterdam, at the same time as the annual world conference of mathematicians. It was on that occasion that the world of mathematics discovered Escher, building that link which made his art known all over the world. Escher was very interested in mathematics, but he did not consider himself a mathematician, as he had not attended university. As a student, when he came across the problem of floor tessellation with irregular shapes for the first time, Escher intuitively forced himself to follow some rules, so as to make the problem not prosaic, for example adjacent profiles should have contrasting colors and figures should be recognizable and concrete. The discovery of Alhambra regular mosaics in Granada during his first visit to Spain in autumn 1922, awakened his interest in tiling with natural shapes or nature-like objects, to contrast with the purely geometric shapes of Arabic tiling.

Escher had the first occasion to deal with the problem systematically in 1926, when he had to replace the tiles of his study and terrace in his house in Rome: he decided to define the drawing and thus analyzed the many possible symmetries for tiling the floor. Escher tackled it in a rigorous and methodic manner, building his own classification of various symmetries. He had a geometric approach based on graphic design, which led him even to enunciate a theorem on the property of triangles.

Escher è genericamente considerato l’artista che più di altri è caro alle persone di scienza, in particolare ai matematici.

Le sue opere, infatti, sono spesso usate per illustrare libri di matematica e geometria. Si trovano sulle copertine di libri di contenuto scientifico oppure illustrano, nelle pagine culturali dei quotidiani, articoli di varia natura ma sempre in qualche modo legati alla scienza. Escher, però, non è amato solo dai matematici, negli ultimi decenni la sua fama si è estesa molto oltre l’ambiente scientifico e le sue mostre, che ormai si tengono in tutto il mondo, battono tutti i record per numero di visitatori.

Escher in vita non ebbe i riconoscimenti di cui gode oggi, il suo rapporto con il mondo dell’arte, e specialmente con la critica, fu

difficile. La sua maestria tecnica come incisore era indiscussa, ma le sue opere erano considerate poco artistiche. Ancora oggi alcuni critici d’arte, a dispetto del successo di pubblico, considerano le sue opere cervellotiche e fredde. In vita Escher dovette aspettare fino agli anni sessanta, quando oramai aveva sessant’anni, per ottenere qualche riconoscimento. L’occasione fu una mostra tenuta nel 1954 ad Amsterdam in concomitanza con l’annuale congresso mondiale di matematica. Fu in quell’Occasione che il mondo della matematica scoprì Escher, instaurando quel legame che ha reso la sua arte nota in tutto il mondo. Escher era molto interessato alla matematica, ma avendo avuto una formazione che non andava oltre quella

delle scuole superiori, non si considerava un matematico. Da studente, quando s’imbattè per la prima volta nel problema della tassellatura del piano con forme irregolari, Escher si impose intuitivamente alcune regole, in modo da rendere il problema non banale, ad esempio quella che profili adiacenti dovevano avere colori contrastanti e che le figure dovevano essere riconoscibili e concrete. La scoperta dei mosaici regolari dell’Alhambra di Granada, durante il suo primo viaggio in Spagna, compiuto nell’autunno del 1922, risvegliò, per contrasto con le forme puramente geometriche delle tassellature arabe, l’interesse per la tassellatura con forme associabili a oggetti o

forme naturali. La prima occasione di affrontare il problema in maniera sistematica Escher l’ebbe nel 1926, quando, dovendo cambiare le piastrelle dello studio e della terrazza nella sua casa di Roma, decise di definire il disegno e si trovò ad analizzare la questione delle diverse possibili simmetrie con le quali tassellare il piano. Escher l’affrontò in maniera rigorosa e metodica, costruendo una propria classificazione delle diverse simmetrie. Il suo era un approccio geometrico basato sulla grafica, che lo portò a enunciare addirittura un teorema sulla proprietà dei triangoli.

E’ la culla della pesca a mosca al Salmone Atlantico, infatti i primi testi sull’argomento risalgono al XVII secolo, parecchi decenni prima che l’esplorazione dei fiumi scandinavi e canadesi avesse inizio. Qui è nato anche il lancio a due mani chiamato “Spey Cast” dal quale hanno avuto origine tutte le varie evoluzioni tecniche che conosciamo al giorno d’oggi.

La varietà di corsi d’acqua risaliti da salmoni e la lunghezza della stagione di pesca fanno della Scozia un luogo unico dove lanciare la mosca, infatti esistono fiumi dalle portate più varie ed è possibile pescare, in base alla zona scelta, da gennaio a novembre.

Mi sento sinceramente di sconsigliare i primi mesi dell’anno (gennaio, febbraio), che possono avere temperature proibitive e nevicate improvvise, e optare invece per primavera, estate e autunno con le loro diverse opportunità di risalita: > la primavera normalmente è indicata per i pesci freschi e più possenti. > l’estate è il periodo della risalita massiccia, composta maggiormente da Grilse, salmoni freschi e di taglia più modesta. > l’autunno è un momento magico per i colori che vestono le valli scozzesi e il periodo nel quale salmoni freschi o colorati, che sono nel fiume da qualche mese, possono

raggiungere taglie importanti.

Fin dai primi anni novanta ho pescato in Scozia in primavera e in autunno perché sono i periodi durante i quali nel resto del mondo le risalite di salmoni atlantici, salvo rarissime eccezioni, sono inesistenti. I fiumi delle Highlands e del nord estremo sono sempre stati la mia scelta primaverile, mentre quelli delle Lowlands e del sud estremo quella autunnale.

Una cosa da tenere in considerazione è che più è avanti la stagione (ottobre, novembre) meno ore di luce si hanno a disposizione.

Non si può negare che negli ultimi 10-15 anni le catture in

Scozia, come in altre parti del mondo, abbiano subito un calo importante ed è il motivo principale per il quale ora si possono tranquillamente prenotare dei tratti di fiume che alcuni anni fa erano inavvicinabili.

Sono legato sentimentalmente a questa terra per le emozioni che negli anni mi ha regalato: il primo salmone atlantico che ho avuto il privilegio di catturare in una fresca mattina di ottobre sulle rive di un fiumiciattolo delle Lowlands trent’anni fa, le serate indimenticabili trascorse nei pubs con gli amici condite da Aberdeen angus e l’immancabile single malt dopo una giornata trascorsa sul fiume, record di pesci catturati in un giorno sempre ad ottobre, complice una massiccia risalita, i primi tentativi di lancio con la canna a due mani ed ancora la cattura di un pesce

It is the cradle of fly fishing for Atlantic salmon, and in fact the first documents on this topic date back to the 17th century, several decades indeed before the start of the exploration of Scandinavian and Canadian rivers. The two-handed casting called “Spey Casting” was born there, and all the subsequent technical evolutions that we still know today originated from it.

The variety of watercourses where salmon run into, as well as the length of the fishing season, make Scotland a unique place to cast a fly, and in fact there are rivers of various capacities and you can fish from January to November, based on the area you choose.

I would honestly advise you against the first months of the year (January, February), when extremely low temperatures and sudden snowfalls are possible, and I would instead opt for spring, summer and autumn, with their different run opportunities: > Spring is usually suitable for fresh and stronger fish. > Summer is the period of massive runs, mostly of Grilse, and fresh salmon of a more modest size. > Autumn is a magical time for the colors of the Scottish valleys and the period when young or colored salmon, which have been in the river for a few months, can reach significant

sizes.

Since the early 1990s I have fished in Scotland in spring and autumn because these are the periods when there are no runs of Atlantic salmon in the rest of the world, apart from some very rare exceptions. The rivers of the Highlands and extreme north have always been my spring choice, whereas I have chosen those of the Lowlands and extreme south for autumn.

You must keep in mind that the later the season (October, November), the fewer the daylight hours.

It cannot be denied that the catches in Scotland, like in other

parts of the world, have decreased significantly in the last 1015 years and it is the main reason you can now easily book stretches of the river which were unapproachable before.

I am sentimentally attached to this land because it has given me emotions over the years during the following occasions: I had the chance to catch the first Atlantic salmon on a cool October morning on the banks of a stream in the Lowlands 30 years ago; unforgettable evenings spent in the pubs eating Aberdeen angus and drinking the inevitable single malt after a day spent on the river; a record of fish caught on a single day in October thanks to a massive run; the first attempts to cast with a twohand rod and the catch of a fish with “a nymph” as a petrified

Sono circa una sessantina i fiumi scozzesi presi in seria considerazione ai fini delle risalite di salmoni, la maggior parte dei quali situati nel centro-nord: il maestoso Tay, il meraviglioso Spey insieme al Tweed, vero gioiello della pesca autunnale e il Dee, mecca dello Spring-fishing, formano il quartetto di fiumi forse più famosi e blasonati del paese.

Alcune caratteristiche dal punto di vista organizzativo fanno della Scozia una meta molto appetibile per i pescatori di salmoni italiani: > la vicinanza e l’offerta di voli diretti > la varietà di fiumi e di prezzi a disposizione

> la possibilità di prenotare comodamente da casa il tratto di fiume, la sistemazione, ecc... (www.fishpal.co.uk)

Credo che pescare salmoni in Scozia contribuisca molto alla formazione di una persona che sceglie questo splendido hobby, sia dal punto di vista comportamentale, sia filosofico-meditativo, dovuto alle lunghe ore passate sul fiume senza catturare nulla, continuando a lanciare con la speranza che la nostra mosca attiri l’attenzione di questo mitico pesce. Credo che l’abboccata sia una sorta di “bonus” che va ad arricchire un’ esperienza di viaggio certamente unica.

Con questo articolo spero di non offendere nessuno, specialmente qualcuno dei tanti convinti di avere inventato l’esca miracolosa per pescare a mosca oppure di aver costruito qualche accessorio assolutamente indispensabile al pescatore a mosca moderno. La mia è solamente una considerazione di quello che è stato fatto in passato, un normalissimo elenco di quello che le grandi aziende, negli anni d’oro della pesca a mosca, hanno inventato prima di noi. Semplicemente questi oggetti sono stati successivamente modificati, e spesso anche migliorati. Ma crearli è un’altra storia, specialmente se analizziamo attentamente il periodo in cui sono stati costruiti e le capacità produttive del periodo. Forse non tutti sanno che la Hardy produceva splendide parachute all’inizio degli anni ‘30, addirittura su ami che erano stati costruiti per questo tipo di montaggio ed erano stati brevettati.Forse l’unica differenza era l’impiego, infatti la Hardy consigliava di utilizzarle in acque veloci, in quanto l’amo si “ piantava” nell’acqua ed aiutava lo swing della mosca evitando il dragaggio. Ora le

I hope this article will not offend anyone, especially those who are convinced that they have invented a miraculous bait for fly fishing or built some accessory absolutely necessary for the modern fly fisherman. I just want to reflect on what has been done in the past, to make a normal list of what the big companies invented in the golden years of fly fishing. These objects were thereafter simply modified, and often even improved. However, creating them is a different story, especially if we carefully consider the period when they were built and the production

capacities of that time. My first thought goes to flies of course, and the first model that comes into mind is certainly the mounting of parachute flies, a very current pattern that many boast of inventing. Perhaps not everybody knows that Hardy manufactured wonderful parachute flies in the early 1930s, even on hooks that had been produced and patented for this type of assembly. The only difference was perhaps the use, as Hardy recommended them for rapid waters because the hook got stuck in the water and helped the fly swing, thus avoiding

Anche qui il catalogo Hardy del 1935 ne fa una splendida descrizione, con diversi optional e possibilità di impiego. Era una semplice, grande ciambella con tracolla e imbragatura, ma la funzione era quella di entrare nell’acqua per agevolare il lancio; lo stesso motivo per cui lo utilizziamo oggi. Sempre Hardy, nel catalogo del 1905, propone wader e scarpe con suola chiodata che, a parte materiali antichi come il cotone cerato e i primi idrorepellenti sperimentali, sono identici a quelli che trovate nel vostro negozio di fiducia. Rimanendo in Inghilterra, il catalogo della ditta Allcocks del 1950 aveva una splendida serie di mulinelli con meccanica da fare invidia a molte ditte attuali, e nella collezione delle mosche vi sono svariati terrestrial molto imitativi. Mosche fatte con materiali naturali difficili da lavorare, non mosche preconfezionate in foam come quelle che costruiamo oggi, dove dobbiamo solo incollare i pezzi che troviamo nelle bustine in commercio. La ditta Foster, azienda famosa soprattutto per la qualità delle canne in bambù, nel 1950 proponeva uno splendido “ Rodrack” esterno per le automobili, insieme ad uno speciale guanto da indossare quando occorreva saltare una recinzione con filo spinato. Anche la francese Pezon et Michel diede un grande contributo all’innovazione, specialmente sui meccanismi dei mulinelli, basti ricordare il modello Luxor Luxe. Anche numerose ditte italiane di quegli anni hanno fatto scuola alle tante ditte estere, specialmente orientali, che successivamente hanno conquistato il mercato. Tra gli oggetti prodotti in passato che hanno lasciato il segno non bisogna dimenticare l’imbragatura costruita da Hardy negli anni ‘ 40 per permettere ai disabili, che avevano perso un braccio durante la guerra, di pescare. Negli anni ‘30 alcune aziende produssero il “Wardle Magnifier”, una sorta di piccola lente di ingrandimento da agganciare al gilet da pesca che aveva una mollettina in grado di bloccare la mosca per aiutare il pescatore nella legatura.

Non mi meraviglierei se in futuro qualche ditta uscisse con un prodotto simile e lo inserisse sul mercato con lo slogan “nuovo prodotto rivoluzionario”.

Another product which is now very trendy is the belly boat.

In this case too, the 1935 Hardy catalogue makes a very good description, including various options and use possibilities. It was just a big inner tube with shoulder strap and harness, but its function was to enter the water and facilitate the casting, i.e., the same reason we still use it today. The 1905 Hardy catalogue offered waders and shoes with spiked soles that were very much like those you can find in your trusted store, except for old materials such as waxed cotton and the first experimental water repellents. In England as well, the 1950 Allcocks catalogue had a beautiful series of reels with mechanics that many present day companies would envy. In the collection of flies there were several highly imitative terrestrials. These were made with natural materials which were hard to work with. They were not premanufactured flies in foam like those we build today, and for which all we have to do is glue the pieces we find in the bags on the market. Foster, a company famous most of all for the quality of its bamboo rods, offered in 1950 a splendid external “Rodrack” for cars, together with a special glove to wear when it was necessary to jump over a fence with barbed wire. Also the French Pezon et Michel contributed greatly to innovation, especially with regard to the reel mechanism; just think of the Luxor Luxe pattern. Also several Italian companies of those years introduced their own products to foreign companies, particularly oriental ones, which then conquered the market. Among the objects manufactured in the past and which have made their mark, we should not forget the harness built by Hardy in the 1940s to enable disabled people to fish too, after losing an arm at war. In the 1930s some companies manufactured the “Wardle Magnifier,” a sort of small magnifying glass to hook to the fishing vest which had a clip to block the fly in order to help the angler in tying it. I would not be surprised if in the future, some company would manufacture a product like this and put it on the market with the slogan, “new revolutionary product.”

Everything seems to be a little bigger in Alaska; rivers, mountains, fish and bears all seem to be supersized. When it comes to exploring Alaska’s famed fly fishing, the renowned waters of the Bristol Bay area offer the highest density of salmon and trophy rainbow trout rivers in the world. This region is home to the largest pacific salmon runs on the planet which also fuels the growth of huge rainbow trout and char that feed on both the salmon’s eggs as well as their decaying flesh after they die.

The massive salmon runs also result in extremely high brown bear counts offering spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities when fishing.

There are several factors that make the salmon and trout fisheries so supercharged in the Bristol Bay region. This part of Alaska lies about 200 miles southwest of Anchorage where the peninsula that eventually breaks into the Aleutian Islands

begins to separate from the main body of the state. The region is sandwiched between the Bristol Bay to the north and the Gulf of Alaska to the south. Pacific salmon runs dominate the entire ecosystem. The most common salmon of the 5 Pacific run species is the sockeye salmon (or “red” salmon due to their bright red color just before they spawn). In addition to feeding huge brown bears, the millions of salmon also fuel the growth of massive rainbow trout.

The prolific fisheries arise from the unique geography of the

region. The ocean waters of the Bristol Bay to the north and the Gulf of Alaska to the south are teaming with life providing a substantial forage base for Pacific salmon at sea. The mainland geography offers the perfect blend of mid sized mountain ranges with thousands of lakes that interconnect with the rivers.

When mountains are too tall in Alaska they result in huge glaciers and glacial runoff which produces turbid waters. The lower elevation mountains near the lodge still receive a healthy snowpack to feed the rivers but lack the massive ice caps that

dirty rivers in the summer. The lakes are equally important in this region as they provide a safe haven for salmon fry and smolt before they leave for the ocean, as well as a winter haven for huge rainbow trout. Rivers that run straight to the ocean may harbor salmon runs but they are not as productive for trophy rainbow trout.

This perfect storm of geographic conditions results in a fishery like no other on earth.

Our preferred dates when visiting the Bristol Bay Region is

June, August or September. June fishing offers a mixed blend of options including dry fly fishing. This tends to be before the salmon move into the rivers so the trout will take a variety of offerings including mouse patterns and streamers. Sockeye salmon begin flooding into the rivers in July but it is generally not until late July or early August that the “egg drop” begins.

Once the sockeye salmon move onto redds and begin laying eggs the trout begin gorging on the high calorie food source.

This is also when the huge rainbows that spend time in the lake

Some places in the world are exceptionally unique and must be experienced first hand to fully appreciate. Such is the case for Alaska’s Bristol Bay Region. The scale of the landscape, the grandeur of the wildlife and the staggering productivity of

Alcuni posti al mondo sono assolutamente unici e devono essere vissuti in prima persona per apprezzarli appieno. È questo il caso della regione della baia di Bristol in Alaska. Il paesaggio di vasta scala, la magnificenza della fauna selvatica e la sconcertante produttività dei vivai hanno pochi eguali.

Se non riuscite a spassarvela con la pesca a mosca in Alaska, probabilmente è tempo di appendere al chiodo il gilet di pesca e di darsi al golf.

We all remember that first contact with fly fishing; for some it might have been a father or a grandfather. For other it might have been a book or a movie and for some it might have been a stranger by the river casting the fly line and tricking fish with dry flies. However it may have happened, we all got hooked for life. With the first caught fish we all wanted to learn everything there is – all about the lines and rods, fly casting and especially about insects and how to be able to imitate them. Fly tying is the equal part of fly fishing as the actual action of catching fish.

Normally, we are taught that fly tying is a way to make artificial

flies that will do the job they are intended to do and that is fooling fish. It is pretty easy to create a fly that will look close to the real insect – you don’t even need to buy fly tying materials.

Things can be found in your drawers, you can brush your cat and there you go. Those flies will definitely catch fish. But tying flies can be much more than that. It can be a way to focus your mind, to dive into yourself, to reach inward and create relaxing and rewarding time that will make your life nothing but better, no matter what happens. With enough attention, tying flies can be pure meditation.

Noi tutti ricordiamo il primo contatto con la pesca a mosca, per qualcuno può essere stato tramite il padre o il nonno. Per altri può essersi trattato di un libro o di un film e per altri ancora può essere stato un estraneo intento a lanciare una mosca sulla sponda del fiume nel tentativo di ingannare pesci con mosche secche. In qualunque modo sia successo, ne siamo rimasti allamati per la vita. Al primo pesce preso abbiamo tutti desiderato apprendere qualunque cosa sulle canne e le code, sul lancio delle mosche e soprattutto sugli insetti e come imitarli.

La costruzione delle mosche è parte integrante della pesca a mosca quanto lo è l’azione vera e propria di catturare i pesci.

Normalmente ci insegnano che la costruzione delle mosche è un modo per produrre mosche artificiali adatte all’uso richiesto, che consiste nell’ingannare i pesci. È piuttosto semplice creare una mosca che appaia più o meno come l’insetto reale – non c’è neppure bisogno di acquistare materiali appositi per la costruzione delle mosche. Le cose di cui avete bisogno potete trovarle nei vostri cassetti, pettinate il vostro gatto ed eccovi serviti i suoi peli. Andranno benissimo per catturare pesci. La costruzione delle mosche può essere però molto più di questo.

Può essere un modo per concentrarsi, tuffarsi in se stessi, raggiungere la propria interiorità creando momenti rilassanti

e appaganti che renderanno migliore la vostra vita, qualunque cosa accada. Se fatta con attenzione, la costruzione delle mosche può essere pura meditazione.

LA MAGIA DELLA CREAZIONE Diciamolo – le nostre vite non sono nient’altro che frenesia.

Giorno dopo giorno e settimana dopo settimana. Abbiamo cose da fare, abbiamo impegni, obblighi, abbiamo un lavoro da svolgere e spesso ci troviamo a fantasticare sulla pesca a mosca. È la nostra via di fuga, il nostro santuario, è un luogo che sistema tutto e lo rimette al suo posto. Ma non c’è da andare lontano, perché quel posto magico l’avete già a casa vostra. Sì, quel posto è il vostro tavolo da costruzione. Avete bisogno di mosche e avete bisogno di trascorrere del tempo a produrle, dunque perché non fare le cose diversamente d’ora in poi? Guardate, fare una mosca è un processo e, sebbene possiate trovare e amare modelli che montate in due minuti, potete farne qualcosa di più utile per la vostra mente. Quando costruite una mosca ci sono certe regole da seguire. Per esempio, dovete prendere il giusto amo prima di cominciare a montarci sopra i materiali.

THE MAGIC OF CREATING

DIVING INTO IT

Let’s face it – our lives are nothing but hectic. Day to day and week to week. We have things to do, we have commitments, obligations, we have work that needs to be done and often we find ourselves daydreaming about fly fishing. It is our escape, our sanctuary, it is a place that fixes everything and puts everything back to where it should be. But you don’t have to go that far because you already have a magical place at your home. Yes, that place is your fly tying desk. You need flies and you need to spend some time tying them, so how about doing things differently from now on? See, tying a fly is a process and although you may find and stick to patterns that you can tie in two minutes, you can turn that into something more useful for your mind. When you tie a fly, there are certain rules you have to follow. For example, you have to pick the right hook before you even start tying on the materials. Whether it is a dry fly or a nymph, you have to choose the right feather, the proper fur, you have to put on the bead that will make the fly sink faster or slower. This is a process and that process can become your safe place, your sanctuary and your way to cope with everyday life. Creating flies may calm your mind, bring more clarity and infuse you with energy and satisfaction.

As you progress through the basics of fly tying and learn a few tricks, whether you noticed or not, the one thing is for sure – when you are tying your flies, you are focused and you have to be if you want your flies to look right. But you can focus even more. Let’s say you have to fill up your fly box for the coming season. You will need quite a few sets of nymphs, wets and dry flies. Imagine having a row of dry olive winged mayflies, then another row or beige sedges, a row of stoneflies and then all those nymph patterns. The list goes one until the box is full.You are already diving into it and your mind is focused. There is little room left for everyday problems and this is where your happy place begins. You can reach out to it anytime, just start thinking about filling your fly box. Don’t stop there. Rather than just tying a few flies, start thinking and counting. Take that #14 hook and start tying materials on. Stay focused and start counting every single wrap. If you need 20 dry beige sedge patterns, they all have to look the same. That means you have to follow the rules and be mindful about the proportions, the number of wraps you make while ribbing the fly or about the length of antennae. This may seem like exaggerating, but if you stay focused and mindful about it, it will become nothing but sitting meditation. Your

La lista prosegue fino a quando la scatola non è piena. Vi ci state già immergendo e la vostra mente è concentrata. Resta poco spazio per i problemi quotidiani ed è lì che comincia il vostro angolo di felicità. Potete raggiungerlo in qualsiasi momento, solo cominciando a pensare di riempire la vostra scatola di mosche.

Non fermatevi lì però. Invece di montare giusto alcune mosche, cominciate a pensare e a contare. Prendete quell’amo da #14 e cominciate a montarci su dei materiali. Restate concentrati e cominciate a legare ogni singola piega. Se avete bisogno di 20 modelli di tricotteri beige, dovranno avere tutti lo stesso aspetto.

Significa che dovrete seguire le regole e prestare attenzione alle

breathing will slow down and your blood pressure will drop. All your other thoughts will slowly start fading away and all those problems with work or the situation in your country will become less important.What will be important is to finish that fly you are tying and after that one, you will have to finish another one. You will be very careful about tying, you will wisely choose the right materials and you will count every single wrap. You will gain peace and satisfaction and you will feel fulfilled, just like you do after a day spent by the river. Only, this sanctuary can be found at your own home and you can run to it every day.

IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE As simple as it may seem on the outside, what happens on the inside while we are tying flies is quite amazing. By doing this simple, repeated task, often for hours, you are provoking a calming effect in your brain and your entire body becomes relaxed.You may tie a few flies or it may last for hours, but with your mind completely devoted to it, you will slowly remove yourself from the real world. When you focus on tying your flies, your mind is occupied and you actually can’t think of

Può apparire esagerato, ma se restate concentrati e assorti, diventerà null’altro che meditazione. Il vostro respiro rallenterà e la pressione del sangue si abbasserà. Starete attenti alla costruzione, sceglierete saggiamente i giusti materiali e conterete ogni singola piega. Troverete pace e soddisfazione e vi sentirete appagati, proprio come dopo una giornata trascorsa al fiume. La sola differenza è che questo santuario ce l’avete a casa vostra e vi ci potete tuffare ogni giorno.

FARÀ LA DIFFERENZA Per quanto possa apparire semplice dall’esterno, ciò che accade dentro di noi mentre costruiamo mosche è piuttosto sorprendente. Svolgendo questa semplice mansione ripetutamente, spesso per ore, si innesca nel cervello un effetto calmante e l’intero corpo si rilassa. Si possono fare solo alcune mosche o proseguire per ore, ma con la mente completamente

dedita al compito che si sta svolgendo ci si estrania lentamente dal mondo reale. Quando ci si concentra sulle mosche, la mente è occupata e non si riesce a pensare a nient’altro. Fuggire dalle richieste pressanti della mente e dedicarsi a qualcosa che piace davvero è una gran cosa e questo stato di concentrazione, calma e meditazione ha molteplici effetti curativi. Funziona come una medicina. Dunque, la prossima volta che decidete di fare una manciata di mosche, fatelo con la mente completamente assorta e immersa in quest’attività. Fate un respiro profondo, pensate a tutti quei materiali, amo, perline e combinazioni letteralmente infinite. Ci sono così tante opzioni, così tante cose da provare, così tanto spazio per l’immaginazione! Siete voi i creatori e impiegherete il vostro tempo nel miglior modo possibile creando le cose che amate fare. Assaporerete ogni secondo e questa diventerà la vostra migliore terapia e il più potente antidoto contro lo stress e le tensioni della vita quotidiana. Non affrettatevi e non costruite semplicemente mosche. Piuttosto, prendetevi il tempo di rallentare un po’. Fate del montaggio di una mosca la vostra meditazione, il vostro zen e il vostro cammino verso la serenità. Andate avanti e, costruendo mosche, superate tutte le brutte cose che vi capitano nella vita. Una ad una, passo dopo passo e piega dopo piega, continuate a costruire. Farà sicuramente la differenza.

So, the next time you decide to tie a handful of flies, do it with your mind completely involved and devoted to it. Take a deep breath, think about all those materials, hook, beads and literally endless combinations. There are so many options, so many things to try, so much room for imagination. You are the

creator and will make the best of your time creating things you love creating. Ricordo quando feci le valigie per il mio primo viaggio sulle flat d’acqua salata, parecchi anni or sono. Non solo cominciai a impilare attrezzatura con diverse settimane d’anticipo, ma accumulai un grande debito sulla carta di credito comprando qualsiasi cosa, dai mulinelli in sovrapprezzo per acqua salata agli stivali fuori produzione per le flat, che non durarono oltre quattro giorni di viaggio. Oh, e non presi un solo bonefish. Dannazione, neppure uno. Una tempesta perfetta, alla lettera, di venti marzolini e pioggia coincise con il lancio in acqua salata di un novizio e con un destino poco propizio. E io sentii giusto un po’ troppo tardi l’esclamazione “Non fare come se dovessi pescare delle trote!”. Quella settimana fu decisamente arduo per tutti pescare nel sud delle Bahamas, ma fu assolutamente impossibile per un fanatico dei piccoli ruscelli che trasportava un sospetto carico doppio e non aveva occhio praticamente per nulla. Non riuscì a cambiare le sorti neppure un bicchiere pieno di rum rovesciato sul ponte e finito nel mare dei Caraibi come sacrificio agli Dei bonefish. Mentre scrivo, mancano due giorni alla partenza per lo Yucatan, dove resterò due settimane, e non ho preso fuori dal cassetto neppure un calzino. Non che mi servano calzini, in realtà. È che mi sono reso conto che la preparazione, benché importante, non deve andare a scapito della salute mentale e della carta di credito. E naturalmente aiuta aver già fatto questo viaggio. La tensione nervosa è cosa passata—da quel primo viaggio, sono riuscito a prendere molte creature marine, compresi i bonefish, i tarpon, gli snook… persino permit.

Conosco i miei limiti e confido molto nelle guide che ci condurranno attraverso le isole di mangrovie e i torrenti della Ascension Bay in Messico. Io non sono affatto un esperto di flat—sono un viaggiatore entusiasta con più immaginazione che soldi, e sono abbastanza fortunato da riuscire a fare un viaggio come questo ogni due anni circa. Le flat—non importa dove si trovino—sono posti incredibili dove lanciare una mosca, anche se la si lancia male.

Con guida e pazienza vedrete un vasto deserto salato trasformarsi in un’autostrada piena di pesci davanti ai vostri occhi. Quello che alcuni istanti prima era una piccola turbolenza in lontananza diventa un branco composto da due dozzine di bonefish da cinque libbre oppure, se siete fortunati, una nave da crociera di scettici permit che si incaglia tra fango e vegetazione in cerca di granchi. Ci vuole un po’ di tempo e, se le condizioni sono buone, l’occhio viene, e così anche i pesci. Dalla vista panoramica della piattaforma di lancio è molto più facile vedere i pesci e calibrare i lanci, ma non è molto intimo.

Finché i vostri piedi non sono saldamente radicati nella sabbia e nel fango, non siete davvero dentro l’ambiente — non condividete l’acqua col pesce che volete prendere. I remember that first saltwater flats trip I packed for several years back. Not only did I start piling gear together several weeks out, I racked up way too much credit card debt buying everything from uber-pricey saltwater reels to discontinued flats booties that all but cratered four days into the journey. Oh, and I didn’t catch a single bonefish. Not a damn one. A literal perfect storm of March winds and rain coincided with a novice saltwater cast and simple fate. And I heard the exclamation, “Don’t trout set!” just a bit too late. It was decidedly tough fishing for everybody that week in the southern Bahamas, but it was decidedly impossible for a small-stream creek freak with a sketchy double haul and virtually no fisheye. Even a tumbler full of rum spilled over the deck into the Caribbean as a sacrifice to the bonefish gods failed to turn the tide.

As I write this, I’m two days away from jetting off to the Yucatan for two weeks, and I haven’t even pulled a sock from the drawer. Not that I’ll need socks, really. It’s just that I’ve come to realize that preparation, while important, need not come at the expense of a maxed out Visa or your sanity. And it helps to have done this trip before, of course. The nervous jitters are gone—since that first trip, I’ve managed to bring a lot of saltwater critters to hand, including bones, tarpon, snook … even permit.

I know my limitations, and I am putting a lot of trust in the guides who’ll be steering us through the mangrove islands and creeks of Mexico’s Ascension Bay. I’m by no means a flats expert—I’m an enthusiastic journeyman with more imagination than money, and I’m lucky enough to earn a trip like this every other year or so. The flats—no matter where you find them in the warmer climes—are incredible places to cast a fly line, even if you cast it poorly. With guidance and patience, you’ll see a vast, salty desert transform into a fishy super highway right before your very eyes. What, moments before, was a little chop in the distance becomes a school of two dozen five-pound bonefish or, if you’re really lucky, a cruising pod of skeptical permit rooting through mud and grass for crabs. It takes a bit of time, but, in good conditions, the fisheye comes along, and so do fish. From the bird’s eye view of the casting platform, it’s much easier to see fish and gauge casts, but it’s not very intimate. Until your feet are firmly rooted in the sand and the mud, you’re not really in the environment—you’re not sharing the water with the fish you’re after.

I’m sure it lowers your odds, frankly, but there’s something to be said for standing in the same water the fish in which the fish are swimming.

All that aside, it does pay to be prepared, even if you only set aside a few hours to do it. Here’s where to start: LONG PANTS, LONG SLEEVES No shorts. Unless you’re not at all susceptible to the sun, you should plan to fish in light-weight

CREMA SOLARE, UN CAPPELLO a tesa larga e UNA BANDANA Sono un tipo dalla carnagione chiara di stirpe europea occidentale — mi scotto solo a pensare al sole. Io non mi metto solo un cappello, ma indosso anche un buff per proteggermi il volto dal riflesso dei raggi. E tutto questo oltre a una crema solare ad alto fattore di protezione (di solito 50 o più). Considerate anche un paio di copribraccia che vi riparino il dorso delle mani.

BURROCACAO Il vento, il sole e il sale possono fare danni alle vostre labbra, dunque è essenziale proteggerle.

Portate con voi un burrocacao con fattore di protezione e mettetelo.

SPRAY PER INSETTI Il virus infettivo Zika sta diventando endemico in buona parte dei tropici. Il Centro per il Controllo delle Malattie ha appena emanato un avviso per i turisti che visitano mete tropicali.

Il virus, che si diffonde attraverso le punture di zanzare, può causare microcefalia nei neonati di madri infette ed è appena giunta notizia che il virus ora si può trasmettere sessualmente.

Meglio sicuri che dispiaciuti.

STIVALETTI O STIVALI DA FLAT Vedrete parecchie guide che guadano a piedi nudi, ma mettetevi in testa che loro conoscono l’acqua e sanno cosa aspettarsi. Un mio amico, guida esperta di Akumal sulla Riviera Maya, proprio ora sta combattendo i postumi della puntura di una razza su un piede. Indossate le calzature giuste per stare sicuri.

OCCHIALI DA SOLE POLARIZZATI Una cosa è certa: se non riuscite a vedere i pesci, probabilmente non ne prenderete. Non lesinate. Gli occhiali possono fare letteralmente la differenza tra il successo e il fallimento. Avete bisogno di suggerimenti? fishing pants and not in shorts. Bring the shorts for the time you’ll spend around the lodge or on the beach, but when you’re fishing, you’re catching rays from two sources—the sun itself, and the sun’s reflections off the water.

SUNSCREEN, A HAT AND BUFF OR A BANDANA I’m a fair-skinned guy with western European lineage—I burn if I think about sunshine. Not only do I try and wear a hat, but I wear a Buff, too, to shield my face from reflective rays.

And that’s on top of some high SPF sunscreen (usually 50 or above). Consider, too, a pair of sunsleeves that cover the backs of your hands.

Tempting cancer is a bad idea.

LIP BALM Wind, sun and salt can play havoc on your lips, making it essential to protect them. Bring lip balm that is SPF rated, and wear it.

BUG SPRAY In much of the tropics, the infective Zika virus is becoming more prominent. The Center for Disease control just issued a travel warning for tourists visiting many tropical destinations.

The virus, spread by mosquito bites, can cause microcephaly in newborn babies of infected mothers, and news was just released that the virus can now be sexually transmitted. Better to be safe than sorry.

FLATS BOOTS OR BOOTIES You’ll see a lot of the guides wading barefoot, but keep in mind they know the water and what to expect. A friend of mine, an experienced guide out of Akumal on the Mayan Riviera, is, as I write this, dealing with the nasty effects of a stingray puncture on the top of his foot.

Wear the correct footwear (and know how to determine what flats shoes are best). Just in case.

POLARIZED SUNGLASSES This one’s obvious. If you can’t see the fish, you are not likely to catch the fish. Don’t skimp, either. Literally they can be the difference between success and failure.

RODS, REELS AND LINES Unless your guide or your lodge is providing gear, you’ll potentially need a pretty impressive quiver for your average flats trip.

If you're heading on a strictly bonefishing trip, then you can get away with a single rod or two at the most, but if you're planning on targeting multiple species (e.g. bonefish, permit and snook), you'll want to bring along at least a couple of rod options. Generally, rods ranging from 7- to 9-weights will cover most bases. You might be able to get away with a 6-weight on

MOSCHE Amo costruire mosche per acqua salata—sono più grandi e più facili da fare. Nella vostra cassetta dovrebbe esserci di tutto, dai Clousers ai modelli di esche vive a quelli semplici come Shminnow e Gotcha, in dimensioni che vanno da 0 a 8. Un paio d’anni fa avevo un singolo modello di esca super-lucida di dimensione 4 che usammo per allamare un grosso barracuda e un carangide da 15 libbre (non si parla solo di bonefish e permit). E una volta andato, era andato. Se non siete costruttori di mosche voi stessi, preparatevi a spendere un bel po’ di soldi al negozio di mosche locale. Alcune guide hanno delle mosche, ma non sempre, parlate con la gente dicendo dove siete diretti e saprete quali mosche vi servono prima di andarci.

ALCOLICI Potete fare buoni affari al negozio di liquori duty-free dell’aeroporto, oppure potete semplicemente aspettare di arrivare a destinazione. Il rum e la tequila ai tropici sono più buoni. Risparmiate il whiskey per un’escursione di pesca alle trote.

ALTRO Non dimenticate il passaporto e un po’ di contanti, per sicurezza. E non dimenticate i farmaci con obbligo di ricetta. Questo è un buon inizio. Probabilmente dovrete lottare contro l’istinto di esagerare coi bagagli. La buona notizia è che i pantaloni da pesca e le t-shirt sono piuttosto leggeri, e voi probabilmente vorrete sfruttare la maggior parte del peso bagagli a disposizione per l’attrezzatura. Due o tre paia di pantaloni da pesca dovrebbero bastare (potete lavarli velocemente, se necessario), oltre allo stesso numero di pantaloncini. Mettete in valigia t-shirt e infradito per andare in giro nel lodge a bere cocktail margarita. Per me, che ho parecchi viaggi di pesca in mare all’attivo, la cosa più importante è non pensarci troppo.

E io riesco a farlo con poco, nel giro di un’ora o due, a seconda della durata del viaggio.

Fare le valigie è un male necessario, ma non mi pesa affatto. Certo fa parte del viaggio, e il dover preparare le valigie segna l’inizio dell’avventura.

the odd, windless day, and if you’re OK adding more bulk to your baggage, bring it. You’ll need corresponding reels (preferably heavyduty versions with protective construction to limit or eliminate saltwater contact with moving parts). They can be expensive, but a good one will last a lifetime. Lines, too, should be considered. There are a number of saltwater lines on the market—most are very dependable. Considering that wind is almost always a constant, it’s not a bad idea to “over line” a rod, too, so that might help you as you make decisions on how many lines/ reels/spools to bring. You won’t need specific bonefish or saltwater leaders, but you might consider some bite tippet or even some wire, just in case you have the chance to go after some of the salt’s toothier critters. I often use 30-pound Maxima at the butt section, tapered to 15-pound leader and then 10-pound tippet.

For barracudas, you’ll need at least 30-pound bite tippet, but wire is even better.

FLIES I love to tie saltwater flies—they’re bigger and easier to tie. Everything from Clousers to baitfish patterns to simple patterns like the Shminnow and the Gotcha in sizes ranging from 0 to 8 should be in your box. A couple of years ago, I had a single, super-shiny size 4 baitfish pattern that we used to nail a big barracuda and a 15-pound jack (it’s not all about the bones and permit). And when it was gone, it was gone. If you don’t tie, be prepared to spend a pretty penny at the local fly shop.

Some guides will have flies, but not all of them, talk to the folks where you're headed and know what flies you need before you go.

BOOZE You can get some solid deals at the duty-free liquor store in the airport, or you can just wait until you arrive in your destination. Rum and tequila taste better in the tropics. Save the whiskey for a trout trip.

WHAT ELSE Don’t forget your passport and some cash, just in case. And don’t forget your prescription meds.

That should be a good start. You’ll probably have to fight the urge to overpack. The good news is that fishing pants and shirts are pretty light, and you’ll probably want to go big on the gear to account for most of the weight in your bag. Two or three pairs of fishing pants should suffice (you can do some quick shower laundry if need be), and the same number of shirts.

Pack t-shirts, shorts and flipflops for lounging around the lodge and drinking margaritas.

The key for me, with several saltwater trips under my belt, is not overthinking it. And I can do it affordably, in a matter of an hour or two, depending on the duration of the trip. Packing is a necessary evil, but I really don’t mind it. It’s part of the journey of course, and I kind of feel like packing marks the start of my adventure.
