The year 2024 promises to be very busy: first of all, we will be present at the New York fair in January to promote some Italian fishing destinations, and then we will participate in some fairs and events in France and Belgium. The first weekend of February we will be at Vicenza fishing fair, probably the most important event of the year. The same organization is preparing a fishing fair in Naples, an event that will take place on the first weekend of March. At all these events we will be present with our own stand, and in the weeks off we will probably be on the road. In our h2o magazine stands you will also find the catalogs and information material of the wonderful Brazilian company Untamed Amazonas, which, with its 4 prestigious lodges, offers quality and excellent services for those who want to fly fish all the most interesting Brazilian fish species; in this issue you can see the advertising page inside the magazine. Next we will also be present at the two most important fishing fairs in Germany.

Enjoy your reading Il 2024 si preannuncia molto fitto di appuntamenti: innanzitutto saremo presenti alla fiera di New York in gennaio per promuovere alcune destinazioni di pesca italiane, per poi partecipare ad alcune fiere ed eventi in Francia e in Belgio fino ad arrivare al primo weekend di febbraio alla fiera della pesca di Vicenza, probabilmente l’evento più importante dell’anno. La stessa organizzazione sta preparando una fiera della pesca a Napoli, manifestazione che si svolgerà il primo weekend di marzo. In tutti questi eventi saremo presenti con un nostro stand, e nelle settimane libere saremo probabilmente in viaggio. There are small paradises for every activity. These are places where one’s work or passion reaches the maximum expression, everything is perfect, and it is difficult to imagine better places for that purpose. As concerns dry fly fishing, and especially for fishing with imitations of small floating mice, I believe that the Barrancoso stream in Argentinian Patagonia represents the best that can be experienced. Located within the Estancia Laguna Verde, the stream is virtually all owned by the Alba family, owners of two lodges on Lake Strobel and operators of the largest fishing project in this area. The Barrancoso flows for about 15 kilometers inside the Estancia, with private access for lodge guests. The very beautiful medium-sized stream has

Per la pesca a mosca a secca, e in special modo per pescare con imitazioni di piccoli topolini a galla, credo che il torrente Barrancoso in

Patagonia Argentina rappresenti il massimo che si possa sperimentare. Situato all’interno della Estancia Laguna verde, il torrente è praticamente tutto della famiglia Alba, proprietari di due lodge sul lago Strobel e gestori dell’operazione di pesca più grande di questa zona.

Il Barrancoso scorre per una quindicina di chilometri all’interno della Estancia, con accesso privato per i

It is a spectacle of nature, an incredible miracle that is renewed every year. Trout always tend to move up rivers during reproduction, but the exception here is the enormous size of these fish. Fishing is always no kill fly only and the very scrupulous management of the fishing

at Estancia Laguna Verde means that the fish are never disturbed too much, with only very few fishermen taking turns on the river. Furthermore, even during the week when the lodge is full, the river's rest days are respected.

This is how this very high quality is achieved. The trout, all rainbow as well as in Lake Strobel, have an impressive growth due to many factors, including the large quantity of

Uno spettacolo della natura, un miracolo incredibile che si rinnova ogni anno. La trota tende sempre a risalire i fiumi durante la riproduzione, ma qui l’eccezionalità è la dimensione enorme di questi pesci. La pesca è sempre nokill solo a mosca e la gestione molto scrupolosa della pesca all’Estancia Laguna Verde fa sì che il pesce non venga mai disturbato troppo, con solamente pochissimi pescatori a rotazione sul fiume. Inoltre anche durante la settimana in cui il lodge è pieno vengono rispettati giorni di riposo del fiume. È cosi che si raggiunge questa qualità altissima. Le trote, tutte iridee come del resto anche nel lago Strobel, hanno un accrescimento spaventoso dovuto a molti fattori, tra cui la grande quantità di cibo e la temperatura abbastanza costante

food and the fairly constant temperature of the lake. This makes it possible to target fish of 6-8 kg in small, shallow holes by fishing only by sight for the entire time. Just see one of the many videos that have been published online to understand what we are talking about. The stream is easily navigable by dividing it into a couple of sections and, even if in some areas the banks are not easy, it is still fishable in its entirety. The guides are always present to advise on lures and approaches and you are never too far from the off-road vehicle. I believe that if a fly fisherman is looking for the best way to practice this technique, the right place is this stream; it will slightly resemble playing tennis on a grass court at Wimbledon or playing a game of football in the Maracana stadium.

Credo che se un pescatore a mosca sta cercando il meglio per esercitare questa tecnica, il posto giusto è questo torrente; un po’ come giocare a tennis in un campo in erba a Wimbledon o fare una partita a calcio nello stadio di Maracanà.

The alarm clock rang early in the room of a small hotel overlooking the city of Iringa, in southern Tanzania. It would be nice to say that the excitement of the upcoming fishing stint kept me up all night making the alarm useless. However, the last week of work in the forest had actually really exhausted me and the alarm rang rather incessantly (and annoyingly) before I could get out of bed. The prospect of the day, and of the following ones, however, was more than fantastic: first 4 hours of dirt tracks in the Miombo woods, as fun as they were dangerous, and then the “fishing” exploration of various stretches of the Ruaha River, some of which were never fished before. The setting for this exploration (or recce, from recognition, as they call it here) is one of the largest wild areas in Africa: the Ruaha National Park, 20,226 km2, an area as large as Lombardy.

I was a guest in my dear friend Kiasile Fox's tented camp, Mwagusi Camp, an oasis of comfort, relaxation and inspiration in the heart of the savannah. The first day ran slowly in the principle of an African safari: radiators that overheated, cover-ups, brunches in the shade of centuries-old baobabs... The arrival in Mwagusi was like taking a leap back in time, and while we were having dinner on a small table set in the bush, we found ourselves surrounded by giraffes, impalas and baboons which prepared for the night by screaming, clicking and cackling.

Finally, however, the time came to spread out the lines and lure the rich fish fauna (and not only...) of the Ruaha River. Kiasile (Hehe, the name meaning “he who is lost and found”, but that's another story) and I targeted the big

La sveglia suona presto nella stanza di albergo di un piccolo hotel che domina la città di Iringa, nel Sud della Tanzania.

Sarebbe bello poter dire che l’eccitazione della pesca imminente mi ha tenuto sveglio tutta la notte rendendo inutile la sveglia, ma in realtà l’ultima settimana di lavoro in foresta mi ha veramente sfiancato e la sveglia suona incessantemente (e fastidiosamente) per alcuni minuti, troppi prima che riesca ad alzarmi dal letto. Il prospetto della giornata, e di quelle successive, è però più che fantastico: dapprima 4 ore di piste sterrate nei boschi di Miombo, tanto divertenti quanto pericolose, e poi l’esplorazione ‘piscatoria’ di vari tratti del fiume Ruaha, alcuni dei quali mai pescati prima d’ora. La cornice per questa esplorazione (o recce, da recognition, come la chiamano qui) è una delle zone selvagge d’Africa più vaste: il parco nazionale del Ruaha, 20.226 km2, un’area vasta quanto la Lombardia.

Sarò ospite nel campo tendato del mio caro amico Kiasile Fox, Mwagusi Camp, un’oasi di comodità, relax e ispirazione nel cuore della savana. Il primo giorno corre lento all’insegna del safari africano: radiatori che si surriscaldano, insabbiamenti, brunch all’ombra di baobab secolari… L’arrivo a Mwagusi è come fare un salto all’indietro nel tempo e, mentre ceniamo su di un tavolino apparecchiato nel bush, ci troviamo circondati da giraffe, impala e babbuini che si preparano per la notte urlando, schioccando, schiamazzando.

Finalmente però giunge il momento di stendere le code ed insediare la ricca fauna

ittica (e non solo…) del fiume Ruaha. Io e Kiasile (nome Hehe che significa ‘colui che si è perso e si è ritrovato’, ma questa è un’altra storia) abbiamo entrambi come obiettivo il grosso tigerfish, ed ignoriamo per ora yellowfish, ciclidi ed alestidi che popolano il fiume. Iniziamo entrambi con canne coda 8 e punta affondante, finale da 20-30 lb e cavo in acciaio. Siamo alla ricerca di Hydrocynus tanzaniae (letteralmente ‘il cane d’acqua tanzaniano’) una delle 5 specie di tigerfish africane, anche chiamato ‘tigerfish blu’ a causa di una vistosa pinna adiposa (la famiglia degli alestidi condivide questa caratteristica con quella dei salmonidi) blu.

Kiasile monta un clouser blu, mentre io provo con uno nero: al primo lancio siamo entrambi incannati, e ci guardiamo sorridendo, felici. Il suo pesce, un bel tiger sul chilo, però si fa recuperare e dopo una breve lotta giunge a riva dove Kiasile lo slama e rilascia in fretta. Nel frattempo io ho recuperato la coda in eccesso e la frizione del mitico Tibor ‘The Everglades’ rilascia lentamente decimetro dopo decimetro di linea. Il comportamento però mi pare strano, ci chiediamo infatti se possa aver allamato un Vundu, una specie di pesce gatto che raggiunge i 100 kg. Proprio mentre discutiamo di ciò, una lunga coda squamata ci toglie ogni dubbio: ho allamato un grosso coccodrillo del Nilo! Segue una giusta dose di imprecazioni (in italiano, inglese e swahili) e risate, finché finalmente raddrizzo la canna e, tenendo con forza la coda, lascio che il peso del coccodrillo raddrizzi l’amo.

L’esperienza ci è da monito: raramente pescheremo senza condividere la pool con coccodrilli e ippopotami (e in un paio di occasioni abbiamo dovuto allontanarci in fretta dalla riva al sopraggiungere di un coccodrillo un po’ troppo ‘curioso’). Dopo tutto questo baccano decidiamo di spostarci a monte (in realtà mentre Kiasile cattura altri 3 tigerfish, ma questo potremmo ometterlo dal racconto...) dove finalmente catturo il mio primo cane d’acqua. In questo punto il fiume corre rapido tra rocce e pesco come se stessi cercando grosse marmorate: lancio a 30 gradi, sfiorando la riva opposta con il pesante streamer, effettuo un mending a monte con la parte galleggiante della coda, lascio affondare la T250 finché non è in

We both started with rods with line 8 and sinking tip, 20-30 lb leader and steel cable.

We were looking for Hydrocynus tanzaniae (literally “the Tanzanian water dog”), one of the 5 species of African tigerfish, also called “blue tigerfish” due to a showy blue adipose fin (the alestidae family shares this characteristic with that of the salmonids).

Kiasile mounted a blue clouser, while I tried with a black one: at the first launch we were both enchanted, and we looked at each other smiling happily. His catch, a nice tiger of about one kilo, however, was retrieved and after a brief struggle reached the shore where Kiasile unhooked and quickly released it.

In the meantime, I had recovered the excess line and clutch of the legendary Tibor that “The Everglades” slowly released decimeter after decimeter of line. However, the behavior seemed strange to me, and in fact we wondered if he could have hooked a Vundu, a sort of catfish that reaches 100 kg. Just as we are discussing this, a long scaled tail removed all doubts: I had hooked a large Nile crocodile! A fair amount of swearing (in Italian, English and Swahili) and laughter followed, until I finally straightened the rod and, holding the line tightly, let the weight of the crocodile straighten the hook. The experience was a warning to us: we will rarely fish without sharing the pool with crocodiles and hippos (and on a couple of occasions, we had to quickly move away from the shore upon the arrival of a crocodile who was a little too “curious”). After all this noise we decided to move upstream (actually while Kiasile caught 3 more tigerfish, but we

tensione, ed inizio a strippare. A differenza delle trote però, la strippata deve essere veloce, velocissima, alla stregua di quella in mare. La mangiata arriva secca e rabbiosa e il tigerfish blu è un degno e forte avversario.

Prova in vari modi a liberarsi dall’amo: salta, cambia repentinamente direzione, dà forti testate. Non è raro slamarne parecchi pescando con ami barbless.

Le zone migliori del fiume, dove catturiamo i tiger più grossi, sono buche profonde o zone con corrente veloce oppure cut-banks dove il fiume scava nel morbido terreno sabbioso e fornisce nascondiglio ai grossi tiger e al pesce foraggio.

Nei raschi, invece, i tiger si spostano raramente e solo nei momenti di caccia frenetica. È proprio nei raschi però che possiamo insidiare le altre specie di pesci tipiche di questo grosso fiume. I Labeobarbus, come suggerisce il nome, assomigliano ai nostri barbi, anche se la loro aggressività li porta sovente ad abboccare anche a piccoli streamer; preferisco però pescarli in hopper-dropper, tecnica che regala spesso anche combattive tilapie.

Gli amanti della pesca a secca e delle attrezzature extra-light possono divertirsi con Brycinus affinis, un lontano parente dei tigerfish, che abbocca con voracità su effimere e piccoli terrestrials. La loro piccola bocca rende però la ferrata molto complicata e non è raro sbagliare svariate abboccate prima di portare a riva uno di questi piccoli gioielli endemici dei fiumi della Tanzania.

could omit this from the story...) where I finally caught my first water dog. At this point the river ran quickly between rocks and I fished as if I were looking for large marbles: I cast at 30 degrees, skimming the opposite bank with the heavy streamer, I mended upstream with the floating part of the line, I let the T250 sink until it was tense, and I started stripping. Unlike for trout, however, the stripping must be fast, very fast, like that in the sea. The bite arrived abruptly and angrily and the blue tigerfish was a worthy and strong opponent. It tried various ways to free itself from the hook: it jumped, and had sudden changes of direction, and strong headbutts. It is not uncommon to unhook several fish when using barbless hooks.

The best areas of the river, where we catch the biggest tigers, are deep holes or areas with fast current or cut-banks where the river digs into the soft sandy soil and provides hiding places for the big tigers and forage fish.

In the scrapes, instead, tigers rarely move and only in moments of frenetic hunting.

However, it is precisely in the scrapes that we can lure the other species of fish typical of this large river. The Labeobarbus, as the name suggests, resemble our barbel, even if their aggressiveness often leads them to bite even small streamers; however, I prefer to fish them with hopper-droppers, a technique that often also produces combative tilapia. Lovers of dry fishing and extra-light tackle can have fun with similar Brycinus affinis, a distant relative of the tigerfish, which bites voraciously on mayflies and small terrestrials. However, their small mouths make the strike very complicated and it is not uncommon to miss several bites before landing one of these small jewels which are endemic to Tanzania’s rivers.

• Hai diversi programmi in diverse zone,immaginiamo che la logistica e la formazione delle guide non debbano essere facili.

Hai assolutamente ragione; la logistica è complessa, ma fa parte dell'avventura che abbracciamo. La formazione delle guide locali è uno dei nostri capisaldi. Fornendo alle comunità indigene competenze e conoscenze, stiamo investendo nel futuro della pesca a mosca sostenibile.

• Ti vediamo spesso fotografato con grossi pesci, quindi deduco che tu sia anche un grande appassionato di pesca…

Siamo nel Piemonte italiano, ai piedi delle Alpi e del Monte Rosa, è qui che scorrono fiumi cristallini, popolati da un'incredibile densità di trote, tra cui la famosa Trota Marmorata! About an hour from Milan and the major airports, not far from Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, there is a small valley now known throughout the world as a small paradise for fly fishing. We are in the Italian Piedmont, at the foot of the Alps and Monte Rosa. It is here that crystal clear rivers flow, populated by an incredible density of trout, including the famous Marble Trout! Valsesia and its tributaries are considered the cradle of Italian fly fishing thanks to the ancient technique of Valsesian fishing. The Valsesian fishing museum in the town of Varallo is an important testimony to

this. The Valsesian fishing technique consists of a simple fixed rod and braided horsehair line, and is considered a leader with some essential flies and a lot of skill on the part of the fisherman. This is an elegant and effective technique even today. Also not to be missed in the area is the Sacro Monte di Varallo, which represents the oldest example of greatest artistic interest among the Sacred Mountains in the Lombardy-Piedmont alpine area. It consists of a basilica, which constitutes the final station of a route that winds through streets and small squares, and 44 frescoed

Inoltre nel campeggio vi sono alcuni lodge in legno, appositamente pensati e progettati per i pescatori, che si trovano a due passi dal fiume e sono estremamente confortevoli. La professionalità delle guide di pesca locali farà il resto. L'atmosfera in queste valli perdute è eccezionale, qui il tempo si è fermato.

I compagni di viaggio non pescatori possono scegliere tra diverse attività pensate sia per gli adulti che per i più piccoli; ciò rende questa destinazione molto adatta anche alle famiglie.

These valleys offer the sport fisherman an incredible variety of routes, from small alpine streams to large glacial rivers, with each season having its own particularity. Significant hatchings of insects begin in March, followed by the impressive hatchings of Stoneflies in the summer period. The fishing season runs from March to October. Among the various facilities, we highlight the campsite located in Piano delle Fate. In addition to pitches for tents and campers, it also manages some apartments

in a small village not far from their excellent restaurant.

Furthermore, in the campsite located a stone's throw from the river, there are some wooden, extremely comfortable lodges, specially designed and intended for fishermen. The professionalism of the local fishing guides will do the rest.

The atmosphere in these lost valleys is exceptional, and time has stopped here. Non-fishing travel companions can choose from various activities designed for both adults and children, making this destination very suitable for families too.

YOKANGA LODGE NEW LEVEL OF SALMON FISHING

A HISTORICAL PLACE After the borders were opened in the early nineties, fishermen from all over the world began to come to the Kola Peninsula. A group of British fishermen acquired the rights to the Yokanga and built a classic fishing lodge. It was ordered from Canada and assembled using huge cedar logs, then dismantled, loaded into 12 steel shipping containers and transported to the UK and then to Russia. A full customs checkpoint was opened for clearance of the containers, each of them weighing 20 tons! Their transportation was made using MI-26 Russian military helicopters. From the time of its foundation in 1998 and up to 2019 numerous groups of poachers “worked” on Yokanga, and fish were caught in tons. One can still see old overgrown roads and hear names of some areas back from those times like “Poachers Pool”.

NEW ERA The situation began to significantly change in September 2019, when passionate Russian fly fisherman, Alexey Strulistov, acquired the Murmanskturist company, which owns the rights to this fishing site and the lodge itself. He set up the security process. Significant funds and efforts have been spent on a relay radio communication system and cellular and satellite communication infrastructure. Remote parts of the river are now monitored with a drone, and it makes the camp’s security team work very efficiently. The river has been cleared of nets and the fishing process in the public license area has improved. The lodge was completely overhauled and surrounding infrastructure was built from zero to provide the highest level of comfort. All these efforts resulted in excellent salmon catches throughout the season.

FISH OF DREAMS The owner of the lodge Alexey Strulistov says: “After significant security efforts were made since I took over the river, we have seen an increase in the catch numbers. The average size of Yokanga salmon is 22-24 pounds but every week our guests land 3-4 fish over 30. Also, in what was a very short 2020 season our guests managed to land two significant fish over 40 pounds”.

The originally uninhabited continent of the Americas was populated from Asia via the Bering Strait. Most archaeologists assume that this migration began around the end of the latest Ice Age, about 13.000-15.000 years ago and proceeded in several waves with people of different cultural levels. It is also possible that the immigration had started earlier, perhaps 30.000 years ago. On the northwest coast, in the region of the mouths of the rivers Fraser and Columbia, a culture of fisherman can be traced back to 4000 B.C.. Almost all Indian tribes along this coast lived nearly exclusively on fish, the Nootka and Makah were also engaged in whaling. The wealth of this culture was based

mainly on the resources of several salmon species which were easily accessible during the upstream spawning migrations of the fish. Furthermore , concentrations of cod, halibut and other fish close to the coast provided sufficient food for the relatively dense population. Hooks and line, spears, traps and dams in the rivers were used for the salmon fishing. Fish hooks of wood tipped with slender bone barbs have been unearthed in archaeological excavation, while many museums house large, elaborately carved wooden halibut hooks complete with line and float.

Also found archaeologically are fish hook shanks of stone and bone. Probably the most productive of any of the fishing

devices, the traps and weirs allowed large quantities of fish to be taken at a time when the salmon runs were at their peak. Weirs built in shallow estuaries, rivers and streams, either to block the upstream passage of salmon or to guide the fish into a trap-or towards the fishermen with waiting spear. The Indians built canoes of cedar wood which was hollowed out by fire. The trunks were then forced apart by wooden sticks and cut to measure. The seaworthiness of these boats for fishing at sea was improved by planks to raise both ends of the canoe. Whales were hunted with lances and harpoons and seals with bow and arrow. The women collected shellfish and large shell mounds can be found in many places along the coast as far north as the

Bering sea. Fishing localities on the lower Columbia River developed to become major centres of fish processing and fish trade. There were almost as many ways of butchering and preserving fish as there were of catching them. The various methods differ depending on the species of fish, the season, the climate of the area, and tribal or local tradition.

The two basic ways to preserve fish were by drying and smoking, or by sun and wind drying. In the drier areas along the Fraser river, where the weather could be relied on with greater certainty, the age-old method was the outdoor drying rack roofed over with planks or branches as protection against direct sunlight and possible showers.

were carefully tended to ensure even drying, with the flesh sliced in a special way to facilitate the process. Large king or chum salmon caught late in the season, when the weather was unstable, were cut thinner to promote faster drying.

Just beyond Yale on the Fraser River, where hot August wind funneled through the canyon, drying racks were poised high on rocky outcrops. Here salmon hanging from the poles dried in a few days. Layers of the flat dried fish were stacked between branches of tree alder boughs to keep them in good condition and away from wasps until they were taken back to the village. Most other coast peoples had to contend with the rain and damp of unpredictable Pacific weather. They relied on drying and smoking to preserve

their fish, and enjoyed the added flavour that smoking gave. Smoke houses, some quite large, were a vital part of the fish camp. Built on cedar planks over a study post and beam frame, the building often had a second storey with a notched log ladder for access, and this was sometimes used for storage. But the credit for providing a winter supply of food did not rest solely with the men. All the great catches of fish and all the abundance of food from the sea would have been useless without the skilled hands and hard work of the woman. It was the woman who hung up the butchered fish, tended the drying racks, watched over the fires in the smoke house, turned the fish at the right time, and took it all down when experience told them it was fully cured.

Costruito su assi di cedro su un palo e un telaio con travi, l'edificio aveva spesso un secondo piano con una scala dentellata di tronchi per l'accesso, e questo a volte veniva utilizzato come magazzino. Ma il merito della fornitura invernale di cibo non spettava esclusivamente agli uomini. Ireland is a very fascinating country and an invitation from my friends, Markus and Chrissy, to fish for a few days in a couple of splendid lakes during the May fly season should not be refused.

So with the excuse of taking some photos, last May we left for Dublin. Fly fishing in a lake is very interesting; if we are in a spectacular context like an Irish lake in mid-May during the flies hatching, you can imagine the atmosphere. The experience we are talking about was on Lake Arrow, which covers an area of 12.47 square kilometers and is located mainly in County Sligo with a smaller part in County Roscommon.

County Sligo was created in 1579 and took its name from the main town, which in turn derives from the river that runs through it, now known as Garavogue. Sligo is one of the most beautiful and diverse counties in the country. The wild coasts on the Atlantic are dotted with long sandy beaches, while inland there are the Dartry and

these lakes are usually almost all private, so the only way to fish there is with a boat and a guide. Obviously, you can dock for lunch and do some launches from the shore.

Questa è una vecchia tecnica di pesca locale che una volta si effettuava con insetti veri fatti saltellare sulla superficie nel momento di massima schiusa. The Gesso (Gess in Piedmontese) is a large Piedmontese stream 42 km long. It is the main right-hand tributary of the Stura di Demonte, which flows in the valley of the same name in the Maritime Alps and develops its course entirely in the territory of the Province of Cuneo. Unlike the majority of the rivers and streams of the Po Valley, which all have almost parallel trends from West to East and receive their tributaries from lateral valleys arranged in a fishbone pattern, the Gesso basin has a characteristic fan-shaped configuration due to the numerous successive branches of

the watercourse.

Just upstream from Valdieri, this splits into two main branches, called Gesso della Valletta on the right and Gesso di Entracque or della Barra on the left. The regime of the watercourse is very variable, rapidly changing from low flows to particularly abundant flows, especially when rapid increases in temperature cause the snow cover to melt in a short time, or even when intense and/or prolonged rains are no longer retained and absorbed by the sward. Its average

annual flow near the confluence with the Stura di Demonte is over 20 m³/s. This stream has been the subject of violent floods several times. The management of this river has also changed frequently depending on the various sections. The most famous area is certainly the Gesso della Regina reserve in the Valdieri area of Cuneo. After various vicissitudes, this stretch of about 6 km undertook a prevalently no-kill flyonly management thanks to a European Interreg project led

by Simone Ardigò and a consortium of aficionados of this

river. Unfortunately, an explosive mix arose subsequently, due to a combination of ignorance, incompetence and lack of foresight on the part of local administrators, which in combination with a large flood, ruined the entire project.

The only hope is that perhaps this attempt has contributed to creating awareness among locals that fishing, if well managed, creates an important tourism industry in the area. We conclude with the hope that someone with serious intentions will come forward to restore this splendid river.

Il Gesso (Gess in piemontese) è un grosso torrente piemontese lungo 42 km, principale tributario di destra della Stura di Demonte che scorre nell'omonima valle delle Alpi Marittime e sviluppa il suo corso interamente nel territorio della Provincia di Cuneo. A differenza della maggioranza dei fiumi e dei torrenti della pianura padana che hanno tutti andamenti pressoché paralleli da Ovest verso Est e che ricevono i tributari da valloni laterali disposti a lisca di pesce, il bacino del Gesso presenta una caratteristica configurazione a ventaglio dovuta alle numerose successive ramificazioni del corso

d'acqua.

Questo, poco a monte di Valdieri, si sdoppia in due rami principali, quello detto Gesso della Valletta a destra e quello detto Gesso di Entracque o della Barra a sinistra. ll regime del corso d'acqua è assai variabile, passando rapidamente da portate esigue a deflussi particolarmente abbondanti soprattutto quando rapidi aumenti della temperatura fanno fondere in breve tempo il manto nevoso o anche quando piogge intense e/o prolungate non sono più trattenute ed assorbite

dalla cotica erbosa. La sua portata media annua presso la confluenza con la Stura di Demonte è superiore ai 20m³/s. Questo torrente è stato più volte protagonista di violente alluvioni. Anche la gestione di questo fiume è cambiata frequentemente a seconda dei vari tratti. La zona più famosa a livello internazionale è sicuramente la riserva Gesso della Regina in zona Valdieri di Cuneo.

Questo tratto di circa 6 km, dopo diverse vicissitudini, era entrato in una gestione in buona parte nokill solo mosca grazie ad un progetto europeo Interreg capitanato da Simone Ardigò e ad una cordata di affezionati di

questo fiume. Purtroppo successivamente si è creata una miscela esplosiva causata da un insieme di ignoranza, incompetenza e poca lungimiranza da parte degli amministratori locali che, sommata ad una grossa alluvione, ha mandato in fumo l’intero progetto. L’unica speranza è che forse questo tentativo abbia contribuito a creare nei locali la consapevolezza che la pesca, se ben gestita, crea un importante indotto turistico sul territorio.

Concludiamo con l’augurio che qualcuno interessato a far risorgere questo splendido fiume si faccia avanti con intenzioni serie.

It is the perfect destination for fly anglers with partners and families that would like to explore the wide variety of leisure and eco-tourism experiences or simply relax on a secluded beach or around the pool with a cocktail. The Alphonse Group and its 10 000 acres of white sand flats are most well-known for their exceptional populations of bonefish as well as a variety of species such as GT, milkfish, permit, and triggerfish.

This diversity gives anglers the opportunity to target a myriad of different species during their stay.

Astove Atoll is the best destination if you want to target massive GT on the flats in the Indian Ocean. Its shallow lagoon, surrounded by sheer drop-offs, makes the fishing experience unique, offering a wide selection of species to target. The Astove lagoon is a sanctuary for both juvenile and trophy-sized fish that feed on the shallow white sand flats. Aside from big GTs, Astove also offers innumerable opportunities for bonefish, permit, bluefin trevally, triggerfish, barracuda, and milkfish, to name a few. Offshore fishing starts just metres from the edge of the flats and allows anglers to test their skills against yellowfin tuna, dogtooth tuna, wahoo, and sailfish.

Cosmoledo is a barefoot paradise, the luxury eco pods and destination as a whole are great for those travelling with leisure partners. The perimeter of the atoll is covered with vast, wadeable sand flats dotted with islands of various shapes and sizes. Farquhar consistently produces some of the finest saltwater fly fishing on the planet. The wide variety of fish species, together with its diverse flats and offshore scenarios make it a complete saltwater experience for the travelling angler. It is one of two Seychelles locations where you have the chance of targeting bumphead parrotfish on the flats, and they are certainly one of the most powerful tailing fish you are likely to encounter. Providence Atoll comprises of two Islands, Providence North and Cerf Island and the vast flats, enormous lagoon system and feeder channels offer fly fishermen the opportunity to wade 345 km² of pristine sand flats, turtle grass banks, surf areas and lagoon edges. Like many of the other atolls in the Seychelles, Providence Atoll is a true fly fishing wilderness. With no lodge on the atoll, guests live onboard our luxury yacht Quo Vadis. Have you ever imagined jumping of a three-storey high waterfall into a pool of unknown depth below, with the feeling of gut-wrenching doom and pain that may be at the other end and still thought: “it’s probably worth a shot”? If you have, you have most certainly lost your mind and likely have a healthy case of adrenal insensitivity. It is, however, this kind of morbid adventure that entices us to go headlong into remote destinations to chase what is most certainly a fish nightmare that will try and ruin you and your gear in the most violent and embarrassing manner possible.

Fly fishing for Giant Trevally, or GT’s, in the surf is a pursuit that requires a certain kind of insanity. It's a game that combines the unpredictability of the ocean with the stubborn menace of a fighting bull, all while standing waist-deep in violently churning water. It takes a special kind of angler to take on this challenge, one with a certain disregard for themselves, one willing to do battle with a fish that pulls harder than a handbag thief at the end of the month.

The first rule of fly fishing for Giant Trevally: there are no rules! You simply take your heaviest gear you can cast for 5

days with more spare equipment than the airline will allow and book a trip to the Maldives. This will set you off on a steep learning curve of 100lb fly line cores, 110lb leaders, flies bigger than your cat and reels with enough drag to hold back the school bus. After the whirl wind tour of YouTube videos and bad advice from friends who caught some trout once, you will find yourself standing in paradise, waist deep in the warm ocean, staring directly into the face of a fish that looks like and angry Emoji surfing gracefully down the face of an impossibly large wave directly at you. You will panic, make a catastrophically shit cast, miss several panicked line strips and then……absolutely nothing will happen. That’s the point of graduation. Now you will appreciate the difficulty of this task. This is also the point of no return; the shaking hands and quivering breath take a few minutes to die down, replaying the “charge” over and over again in your mind, cementing the love of this gloriously violent pursuit – and you haven’t even connected yet!

Remember that 110lb leader you saw on the 40th YouTube video you watched? Get some. Yes, you can fish lighter

and yes, you may land the fish but the only other nonexistent rule of GT fly fishing – don’t F*$k around. These fish are brutes. They will pull the living daylights out of you, exploiting the slightest weakness in you and your gear. If you hook that meter plus fish, the stars better align to keep you connected from start to finish to the purest violence.

After a day or two, once you have gotten your rhythm with the 12wt, timing the waves and putting a long cast over the top and into the trough behind, finding the line in your hands with every strip and keeping contact with the fly, it'll be like a freight train hitting you. The line will be ripped from your hands and cut through the water at a speed that is unfathomable. As you feel the immense pressure, you cannot believe that you can put that much force into a fly rod – sometimes you can’t. If everything goes right and you manage to survive the first few minutes of blistering runs, with knuckles intact, you should be in the clear. Once that beautiful fish’s tail is in your hand and the tension in every muscle in your body has relaxed, the utter joy and exhilaration washes over in a soothing post-fight high- the only legal kind in the Maldives.

There is something magical in fishing the surf, the feeling of the waves crashing against your legs, the salt spray in your face, the sound of rushing water all around you. There is an alluring challenge of fighting a fish using nothing your strength and skill to bring it to hand. Fly fishing for GT’s is the classiest bare knuckle fight you can imagine, like chasing your Tequila with the most expensive Champagne.

There is a plethora of international destinations that offer the Fly angler a shot at truly big GT’s. Some destinations have become household names and others are fast developing a reputation for remote adrenaline rushes. The Maldives has somehow maintained the quiet kid in the corner position.

Most Maldivian resort brochures splash stilted villas over turquoise water with cocktails and perfect suntans, this is however only a fraction of the atolls true appeal. There are over 1000 islands in 26 atolls, each with its unique structure and predominant populations of tropical fish. You will likely catch fish in any of the atolls but most probably not through a resort as they generally do not offer fishing and specifically not fly fishing as this requires specific knowledge on the areas accessible to fly fishing guests and an array of gear

È tuttavia, questo tipo di desiderio morboso che ci spinge a dirigerci verso destinazioni remote per inseguire quello che è sicuramente un incubo che cercherà di rovinare noi e la nostra attrezzatura nel modo più violento e imbarazzante possibile.

La pesca a mosca dei Giant Trevally, o GT, nel surf è un'attività che richiede un certo tipo di follia. È un gioco che combina l'imprevedibilità dell'oceano con la minaccia ostinata di un toro da combattimento, il tutto mentre si sta immersi fino alla cintola nell'acqua violentemente agitata.

Ci vuole un tipo speciale di pescatore per affrontare questa sfida, uno con un certo disprezzo per se stesso, uno disposto a combattere con un pesce che tira più forte di un ladro di borsette alla fine del mese.

La prima regola della pesca a mosca del Giant Trevally: non ci sono regole! Prendi semplicemente la tua attrezzatura più pesante, più attrezzatura di riserva di quella consentita dalla

compagnia aerea e prenoti un viaggio alle Maldive. Questo farà salire la tua curva di apprendimento, con mucchi di coda da 100 libbre, finali da 110 libbre, mosche più grandi del tuo gatto e mulinelli con resistenza sufficiente a trattenere uno scuolabus. Dopo il vorticoso tour dei video di YouTube e i cattivi consigli degli amici che una volta hanno catturato delle trote, ti ritroverai in paradiso, immerso fino alla cintola nel caldo oceano, a fissare direttamente in faccia un pesce che sembra un Emoji arrabbiato che surfa con grazia lungo la faccia di un'onda incredibilmente grande direttamente verso di te. Andrai in ansia, farai un lancio catastroficamente di merda, perderai diversi metri di coda in preda al panico e poi... non succederà assolutamente nulla. Questo è lo scopo del tuo viaggio. Ora apprezzerai la difficoltà di questo compito. Sei ad un punto di non ritorno; le mani tremanti e il respiro affannato impiegano alcuni minuti per calmarsi, ripetendo la "carica" più e più volte nella tua mente, cementando l'amore per questa ricerca gloriosamente violenta - e non ti sei nemmeno ancora connesso!

Ricordi quel leader da 110 libbre che hai visto nel quarantesimo video di YouTube? Procuratene alcuni.

Sì, puoi pescare più leggero e sì, puoi catturare il pesce, ma l'unica altra regola inesistente della pesca a mosca ai GT è: non andare in giro. Questi pesci sono bruti. Ti sconquasseranno, sfruttando la minima debolezza in te e nel tuo equipaggiamento. Se allami quel pesce da più di un metro, le stelle si allineano meglio per tenerti connesso dall'inizio alla fine con la violenza più pura.

Dopo un giorno o due, una volta che hai preso il tuo ritmo con la 12wt, cronometrando le onde e facendo un lungo lancio sopra la cima e nel trogolo dietro, ritrovando la coda tra le mani con ogni strip e mantenendo il contatto con la mosca, sarà come se un treno merci ti colpisse. La coda ti verrà strappata dalle mani e taglierà l'acqua a una velocità incredibile. Quando senti la pressione, non puoi credere di dover mettere così tanta forza in una canna da mosca – a volte non puoi. Se tutto va bene e riesci a sopravvivere ai primi minuti di corse violente, con le nocche intatte, dovresti essere a posto. Una volta che hai in mano quella bellissima coda di pesce e la tensione in ogni muscolo del tuo corpo si è rilassata, la gioia e l'euforia assoluta si riversano in una rilassante ebbrezza post-combattimento, l'unico tipo legale alle Maldive. C'è qualcosa di magico nella pesca sulle onde,

la sensazione delle onde che si infrangono contro le tue gambe, la nebbia salina sul tuo viso, il suono dell'acqua che scorre intorno a te. C'è una sfida allettante nel combattere un pesce usando solo la tua forza e abilità per avvicinarlo.

La pesca a mosca ai GT è la lotta a mani nude più elegante che tu possa immaginare, come inseguire la tua tequila con lo champagne più costoso.

C'è una miriade di destinazioni internazionali che offrono al pescatore a mosca la possibilità di provare a cimentarsi con grandi GT. Partly because it is easily accessed, there is a ton of accommodation options and because it is cost effective (if you are willing to skip the stilted villas).

There is a catch; however, you need to explore to figure out the patterns of where the most productive zones are, what times and tides are preferred and which parts are likely to have fish at specific tide windows.

Understanding the dynamics of each area of an atoll takes time and is an investment to get a deep understanding of the movements of these fish. The incredible thing is that the next set of islands is likely completely different, and the decoding process must be repeated. Having mostly figured out these patterns, we fast track the point at which you get a fly in front of a fish in the right conditions to get the reaction you are looking for, but this of course means little in determining the end result as has been described above!

There is a trifecta that must intersect to give you the shot at your dream fish, namely, the location, the equipment and

the expertise. With those three elements well planned, your dollars are likely going to be well spent.

And in essence this is what the trips to the Maldives are about, offering a flats and reef experience at a price that is truly accessible and doesn’t make this a once in a lifetime trip. It doesn’t try to be a Seychelles remote island alternative, because it simply isn’t that. What it is though is a magical tropical paradise with an incredibly healthy reef environment offering the angler shots at trophy GT’s if they are willing to put in some elbow grease and meet the beast in the ring, in the fish’s comfort zone.

Why do we spend thousands of dollars on gear, travel halfway around the world, and stand waist-deep in the ocean, all for the chance to catch a fish that we'll eventually release back into the wild? Because it’s pure adventure.

And why the hell not go to the extremes to see how much fun you can have dressed in tights and looking like an overdressed drunk Heron stumbling around the reefs?

And yes, it’s also for the epic memories and most likely the dramatic pictures of you trying to hold a seriously big fish in the crashing surf.

C'è una tripletta che deve intersecarsi per darti la possibilità di catturare il pesce dei tuoi sogni, vale a dire la posizione,

l'attrezzatura e l'esperienza. Con questi tre elementi ben pianificati è probabile che i tuoi soldi saranno ben spesi.

E in sostanza questo sono i viaggi alle Maldive, offrire un'esperienza di flat e barriera corallina a un prezzo veramente accessibile e non irripetibile. Non cerca di essere un’alternativa alle isole remote delle Seychelles, perché semplicemente non lo è. Quello che è, però, è un magico paradiso tropicale con un ambiente corallino incredibilmente sano che offre ai pescatori colpacci a GT da trofeo se sono disposti a mettere un po' di olio di gomito e incontrare la bestia sul ring, nella zona di comfort dei pesci. Perché spendiamo migliaia di dollari in attrezzature, viaggiamo dall'altra parte del mondo e stiamo nell'oceano fino alla cintola, tutto per avere la possibilità di catturare un pesce che alla fine rimetteremo in libertà? Perché è pura avventura. E perché diavolo non andare agli estremi per vedere quanto puoi divertirti vestito in calzamaglia e con l’aspetto di un airone ubriaco troppo vestito che inciampa tra le barriere coralline? Eh sì, è anche per i ricordi epici e molto probabilmente per le foto scenografiche di te che cerchi di trattenere un pesce davvero grosso tra le onde che si infrangono.
