We open this issue with an article on the Test where we were last fall, a Mecca for every self-respecting fly fisherman, where at the end of the nineteenth century fishing was only recommended upstream and with floating flies. It's been a long time since. We have improved materials to make rods, flies and reels, but have we also improved the ethics of fly fishing? I do not think so. Then we continue with an article by Franco Bosin on fishing the Byske in Sweden, a splendid river for “strong” fishermen of Atlantic salmon. This issue comes out while we are fishing Rio Gallegos and Rio Penitente in Argentina, soon we will write a report on these rivers. The new year is full of events: from the EWF in Germany in the first weekend of April to the Tampere fair in Finland on the following week. È passato molto tempo da allora. Abbiamo migliorato i materiali per costruire canne, mosche e mulinelli, ma abbiamo anche migliorato l’etica della pesca a mosca? Io credo di no. Proseguiamo poi con un articolo di Franco Bosin sulla pesca nel Byske in Svezia, fiume splendido per pescatori “strong”di salmoni Atlantici. Questo numero esce mentre siamo a pescare nel Rio Gallegos e nel Rio Penitente in Argentina, prossimamente scriveremo un report su questi fiumi. Parlare dei chalk stream inglesi ad un pescatore a mosca è come parlare dello stadio di Wembley ad un tifoso di calcio. La pesca a mosca moderna è stata molto influenzata dagli studi che sono stati fatti in quest’area da grandi pescatori come Halford, Skues, Sawyer, solo per citarne alcuni.Va anche detto che questi

illustri personaggi probabilmente oggi si stanno rigirando nella tomba vedendo la fine ingloriosa che ha fatto la tecnica della pesca a mosca fra skagit e pesca con il filo; purtroppo quello che conta oggi è catturare e non pescare. In controtendenza quindi parlerò del fascino della pesca a

mosca di altri tempi, dove era buona educazione fermarsi dopo 3, 4 catture per non stancare troppo il tratto di fiume, secondo l’autolimitazione di Halford. Dove non si lanciava se non si vedeva la bollata e non si era sicuri di avere l’esatta imitazione dell’insetto che in quel momento era presente sul

Discussing English chalk streams with a fly fisherman is like discussing the Wembley Stadium with a football fan. Modern fly fishing has been highly influenced by studies made in this area by some great fishermen such as Halford, Skues, and Sawyer. It can also be said that these famous celebrities

are probably rolling over in their graves now, considering the inglorious end of the fly fishing technique among methods like the skagit and fishing with wire; unfortunately, what counts today is catching and not fishing. By contrast, I will then talk about the fascination of fly fishing from the old days, when it was good manners to

stop after 3 or 4 catches, so as not to tire the stretch of the river too much, according to Halfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s self-limitation. At that time, you did not cast if you did not see the rise and if you were not sure to have the exact imitation of the insect that was present on the river at that moment, and you used to fly fish only upstream then. spoke of purism in dry fly fishing, with little respect for those who fished downstream with submerged flies or, even worse, with nymphs. Towards 1930, he created a series of dry flies which imitated males and females of all mayfly families and the most important insects which are on the Test, a series of flies called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Halford

These were small masterpieces built with horse hair dyed in many colors, rigorously on upeyed hooks and with double-mounted feather wings, as was traditional. I had bought this series of 33 extremely rare flies in bulk from a collector,

and they were waiting to do the job for which they had been created. The occasion of this trip allowed me to use them for fishing and they did their job very well. Everything is about fly fishing here: you cross the village of Stockbridge and drive past the Gosvernor Inn, where Halford stayed when he came by train from London

for his fishing days. Finally you get to the small village of Mottisfond, where the first debates between Gem Skues and Halford on the use of nymph in chalk streams began. A lot of time has passed, but conversations have not changed: old fishermen do not like the more invasive modern techniques much,

Personally, I feel closer to this second family perhaps because of my age, but also because of my passion for history and collecting, I think. We fished the Test River near the villages of Romsey

and Stockbridge in private beats, thanks to the friend Terry, which were very nice and extremely well-kept by local river-keepers. There is only a little more to add: the quality of the river, fish, local accommodations and insiders. It was a blast from the past, just as I like it.

The Byske River

FISHING ADVENTURES

Questo è sicuramente uno dei migliori fiumi da salmoni della Svezia, ma è anche vero che chiede molto al pescatore, in termini di spostamenti, costanza, tecnica e assetto di pesca. Nasce da un lago nei pressi di Arvidsjaur, Lapponia svedese, scorre per circa 100 chilometri e sfocia nel Mar Baltico vicino all’omonimo paesino. La bellezza del fiume, la zona selvaggia in cui scorre e la potenza dei suoi pesci mi hanno affascinato parecchi anni fa e, da allora, ci torno regolarmente. La cattura non è per niente scontata, non per la scarsità della risalita che è notoriamente importante (6/8 mila pesci a stagione), ma per la difficoltà nell’invogliare i salmoni ad attaccare la mosca. Questo fa del Byske un’ottima scuola per chi vuole crescere e maturare come pescatore di salmoni. Un altro aspetto che mi fa apprezzare i momenti passati sulle sponde di questo “gioiello” svedese è quello di vedere saltare i salmoni, mi capita spesso infatti di osservare la mia coda in acqua e contemporaneamente “catturare” con lo sguardo una schiena o una coda di questi possenti pesci argentati che rompe la superficie delle pools. Il periodo della risalita va da fine maggio e prosegue fino a fine stagione (31 agosto) e quello più indicato per insidiare pesci freschi, combattivi e di buona taglia va da circa metà giugno a circa metà luglio. Con i livelli di inizio stagione vengono usati attrezzi potenti a due mani mentre andando avanti con la stagione,

This is certainly one of the best salmon rivers in Sweden, but it does require a lot from the fisherman in terms of transfers, perseverance, technique, and fishing equipment. It comes out of a lake in the vicinity of Arvidsjaur in the Swedish Lapland, and flows after about 100 km into the Baltic Sea, near the Arvidsjaur village. The beauty of the river, the wild area it flows in, and the power of its fish fascinated me several years ago and I have gone back there regularly since then. Catches cannot be taken for granted in any case, not because of the number of fish running (as many as 6/8 thousands a season), but because of the fact that it is very hard to lure the salmon into biting the fly. This makes the Byske River an excellent school for those who want to grow and gain experience as salmon fishermen. Another aspect which makes me appreciate the moments spent on the banks of this Swedish â&#x20AC;&#x153;jewelâ&#x20AC;? is to see salmon jumping, as I often happen to observe my line in the water and at the same time catch a glimpse of the back or tail of a mighty silver fish breaking the surface of the pools. The run season is from late May till 31 August, and the most appropriate time for luring fresh, combative and good-sized fish is approximately from mid-June to midJuly. Considering the water levels, powerful equipment is used at the beginning of the

Le acque del Byske sono gestite dall’ Associazione Pesca locale perciò si può pescare facendo un semplice permesso giornaliero o settimanale. Inoltre la distanza da Stoccolma è breve: con circa un’ora di volo si raggiungono sia Lulea che Skelleftea rispettivamente a un’ ora e un quarto e a 45 minuti di auto dal fiume, quindi, partendo da casa al mattino e dopo lo scalo nella capitale svedese, la sera stessa si può essere già in pesca. Il paese è piccolino ma ha due supermercati molto forniti, discreti ristoranti, pizzerie ed un negozio di sport/ pesca con l’attrezzatura di base. Se avrete la fortuna di pescare nel Byske e catturare un salmone ingannato dalla vostra mosca, allora capirete perché può accadere di tornarci più volte. season, whereas lighter rods are used when the season goes on and the water gets lower: light one-hand rods can be a good alternative then. One difficulty you have to face on the Byske River is certainly the access to the river, as all small roads going through the Lappish wood are very similar, but only some lead to the vicinity of the river; therefore, it is fundamental to know where to go, so as to avoid going around in vain for hours. The Byske waters are managed by the local Fishing Association, so you can fish just with a daily or weekly permit. Moreover, the distance from Stockholm is short: in about one hourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flight you reach Lulea and Skelleftea, which are a one hour and 15 minutes and 45 minutes drive from the river, respectively. So if you leave home in the morning and make a stopover in the Swedish capital, you can be fishing in the evening. The village is small but there are two well-supplied supermarkets, decent restaurants, pizzerias and a sports/fishing shop selling basic equipment. If you are so lucky to fish the Byske River and catch a salmon lured by your fly, then you will understand why you can happen to go back there several times. Dalla fine del diciannovesimo secolo fino ai tre quarti del ventesimo secolo, la Gran Bretagna produsse alcuni costruttori di mulinelli altamente specializzati che, per più di un secolo, fabbricarono i migliori mulinelli da pesca di tutti i tempi. William Henry Dingley, che trascorse più della metà

della sua vita nella piccola città di campagna di Alnwick, nel Northumberland, nel nord-est dell'Inghilterra, è considerato uno dei più abili di questi eccezionali artigiani. I collezionisti conoscono le sue opere oggi dall'ormai famosa "D", di solito stampata con un numero all'interno dei suoi mulinelli e bobine.

From the late nineteenth century through three quarters of the twentieth century, Britain produced highly accomplished reel makers who, for more than a century, built the finest fishing reels in the world. William Henry Dingley, who spent more than half of his life in the small

country town of Alnwick, Northumberland in the northeast of England, ranks as one of the most skilled of these extraordinary craftsmen. Collectors know his works today by the now-famous â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dâ&#x20AC;? that is usually printed with a number inside his reels. Born in 1860, he began to work

at the age of fourteen as an apprendice for the master reel maker Reuben Heaton. In time he shifted employment to another reel maker, David Slater, continuing to refine his increasingly impressive skills. A sportsman as well as a superb craftsman, Dingley learned spinning on the river

Trent. These early and formative experiences provided the springboard that allowed him to begin working in 1891 for Hardy Bros as one of their most important reel makers and designers. While at Hardy he helped build and refine the world famous Perfect reel. During his six

years of employment there, he also created the Silex spinning reel, a model that, in variations, would prove to be highly profitable for Hardy for many years and widely emulated. His job at Hardy lasted for two decades and he was acknowledged for his creativity and mechanical expertise. In 1911 Dingley left Hardy Brothers for J.J.S. Walker, a smaller Alnwick tackle maker, where he created reel designs and set up manufacturing procedures. He became manager of the firm, and even after leaving it to start his own company, he kept on making reels for the Walker shop. J.J.S. Walker became Walker Bampton, and Dingley, then later his son, made reels for them until the early 1950s. By the time he struck out on his own, leaving J.J.S Walker in 1913, he had worked in the reel trade for almost forty years. When he founded W.H. Dingley Reel Making (at the age of 53) he had long been an expert brassman and was one of the first reel artisan to use

the new aluminium alloys. As an acknowledged master craftsman , in 1913 Dingley was at the top of his game. His cumulative experiences and raw talent were probably unrivalled at the time. Between 1913 and 1946, Dingley produced reels from his modest Alnwick factory that competed for superiority with any other company. More than forty of the most prestigious tackle dealers throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada and America were selling his works. In time his son Ernest began to work with him, and the business was renamed W.H.Dingley & Son. Dingley continued to work steadily until his death in 1946 at the age of 85. By the time he died, he had worked largely without pause in the English reel trade for the last 150 years of reel making. We conclude that very few reel makers of any era can rival with Dingleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s his creativity, tenacity and high quality of his products.

The Icelandic lake with the tongue-twisting name, Thingvallavatn, is home to some of the world’s most incredible brown trout fishing. In the following, Rasmus Ovesen takes you to the lake, which delivers mind-boggling amounts of monster brown trout every year.

WE’RE AT THINGVALLAVATN, a massive lake resting below towering snow-clad mountains, in an ancient bed of barren lava plains and mossy meadows. It is early June, but it is still bitterly cold and sharp, howling Northern wind agitates the lake’s massive water surface sending chilly waves crashing onto the rocky shores. We have four days of fly fishing to look forward to, and already now – after our first expectant day on the lake, we have landed five incredibly beautiful brown trout weighing more than five kilos. We have hooked the fish close to the shoreline, where deeper water meets the shallows, and they

have perplexed us with their elegant colours and compact build. These are regular Ice Age brown trout that can straighten out hooks, burst leaders and empty reels of backing with their sheer power and determination. The fact that they can grow to stupendous sizes only ads to their legend - and making Thingvallavatn what it is: A Jurassic Lake with brown trout. THE THINGVALLAVATN BROWN TROUT are something truly unique. Their genetic makeup can be traced all the way back to England. From here, sea-run brown trout from the last Ice Age migrated to the Icelandic coasts and ventured into different

watersheds and rivers. One of these waterways led the fish into an area that later on – because of massive volcanic activity 12.000 years ago – became isolated from the ocean. What is now Lake Thingvallavatn’s southern end rose and dammed what had previously been a roaring river. The now land-locked sea-run brown trout showed no signs of unhappiness being isolated from England and their home rivers, though. On the contrary, they quickly settled in the lake, and they grew in both size and numbers – even long after the first people found their way to the lake during the Age of the Vikings.

È inizio giugno, ma fa ancora un freddo pungente e un aspro vento sferzante proveniente da nord agita l’enorme superficie dell’acqua, sbattendo onde gelide sulle rive rocciose. Abbiamo davanti a noi quattro giorni di pesca a mosca e già ora, dopo il primo giorno di attesa sul lago, abbiamo tratto a riva cinque trote fario, incredibilmente belle, che pesano più di cinque chili l’una. Abbiamo allamato i pesci vicino a riva dove i punti più

profondi incontrano le acque basse e siamo rimasti sbalorditi dai loro colori eleganti e dalla loro corporatura robusta. Sono vere trote fario da era glaciale, in grado di raddrizzare i nostri ami, strappare i finali e svuotare i mulinelli dal backing con la loro grande forza e determinazione. Il fatto che possano crescere fino a raggiungere dimensioni eccezionali non fa che contribuire alla loro leggenda e rende Thingvallavatn quello che è: il Jurassic lake con trote fario. LE TROTE FARIO DEL THINGVALLAVATN sono qualcosa di veramente unico. La loro costituzione genetica ci riporta all’Inghilterra. È da lì che, nell’ultima

era glaciale, le trote fario in risalita migrarono verso le coste islandesi e si avventurarono in diversi bacini idrici e fiumi. Uno di questi percorsi portò i pesci in una zona che poi divenne isolata dall’oceano in seguito all’intensa attività vulcanica di 12.000 anni fa. Ciò che ora è l’estremità meridionale del lago Thingvallavatn si innalzò e fece da argine a quello che prima era un fiume tempestoso. Ciò nonostante, le trote fario, allora senza più sbocchi sul mare, non sembravano soffrire del fatto che erano ormai isolate dall’Inghilterra e dai fiumi dove erano state di casa. It wasn’t until a man-made dam in the lake’s southern end collapsed in 1959 that the unique brown trout stock suddenly started suffering. The spawning grounds, which were situated above the dam itself, ended up being destroyed as all the gravel was vacuumed and washed down stream. In the following decades, the trout stocks declined dramatically, and they ultimately ended up being on the brink of extinction. The unfortunate development wasn’t reversed until the end of the last millenium. A group of passionate volunteers systematically started to rehabilitate the lake’s brown

trout stocks. They electro-fished brood stock, and they succeeded in facilitating spawning activity in a handful of tributaries where the brown trout had never really spawned before. In 2000 progress was finally detected, and throughout the past 15 years, the Thingvallavatn brown trout have reestablished and grown into a healthy population with strong genetics and sublime growth conditions. And as a result, the fishing in the lake is turning into quite the phenomenon! THE AVERAGE SIZE of the Thingvallavatn brown trout is around solid 3,5 kilos, and fish in the vicinity of eight kilos are caught on a fairly regular

basis. Fish of more than 10 kilos are caught every year, and the standing record so far is an impressive 102cm fish that was estimated at 17 kilos. Lake Thingvallavatn’s brown trout are pure eating machines; chrome in appearance, broad and compact – and with ravenous appetites. They are among the most beautiful, well fed, and powerful trout in the world, and the key to understanding their impressive physique and growth rate is to examine the lake’s biomass and geo-thermic conditions. One last key to understanding why Lake Thingvallavatn’s brown trout grow so big is that they can get quite old – up

Questo andamento infausto non segnò un’inversione di rotta fino al termine dello scorso millennio. Un gruppo di appassionati volontari cominciarono a reinserire sistematicamente gli stock

di trote fario del lago e riuscirono a facilitare la deposizione delle uova in una manciata di affluenti in cui la trota fario non aveva mai veramente deposto le uova prima. Nel 2000 si notò finalmente un progresso e negli ultimi 15 anni la trota fario si è reinsediata nel Thingvallavatn fino a costituire una bella popolazione con un solido patrimonio genetico ed eccellenti condizioni di crescita. Di conseguenza, la pesca nel lago sta diventando fenomenale! LA TAGLIA MEDIA della trota fario del Thingvallavatn è di circa 3,5 chili abbondanti e vengono catturati con una certa regolarità pesci vicini agli otto chili.Ogni anno si catturano pesci oltre i 10 chili e il record registrato finora è un pesce di 102 cm, stimato sui 17 chili. Le

trote fario del lago Thingvallavatn sono macchine da guerra quando si cibano, forti, robuste, dai colori cromati e molto voraci. Sono fra le trote più belle, ben alimentate e possenti al mondo, e la chiave per comprendere la loro corporatura imponente e la loro rapida crescita è esaminare la biomassa e le condizioni geotermiche del lago. Un’ultima chiave per capire perché le trote fario del lago Thingvallavatn diventano così grosse è che possono diventare piuttosto vecchie – fino a 15anni – e che le loro abitudini di deposizione delle uova sono in qualche modo speciali. Mentre le trote fario delle altre parti del mondo depongono le uova ogni anno, non capita di rado che le trote fario del Thignvallavatn

While brown trout elsewhere in the world spawn every year, it’s not uncommon for Thignvallavatn brown trout to get so preoccupied with feeding that they simply ‘forget’ to spawn. It’s rather normal for Thingvallavatn brown trout to skip spawning every other year, and spawning pauses of up to 3-4 years aren’t unusual either. Furthermore, the spawning runs and –breaks are relatively short, and this means that spawning doesn’t toll too badly on the fish, and that the spawning-related break from the feeding-fest in the lake is short-lived.

THE FISHING IN THE LAKE is very diverse. On calm days, for instance, you can experience some incredibly exciting sight fishing with nymphs and dry flies. In the mouths of some of the tributaries you can fish like in a river using cross current presentation, line mends, and strike-indicators. And when the wind is howling – which it does annoyingly often in Iceland – you can blind fish with streamers. It’s a rather arduous type of fishing, where you systematically search the shoreline for schools of fish with small, rapidly retrieved sticklebackand arctic char imitations – but it can produce some real monsters.

THINGVALLAVATN: Thingvallavatn is situated half an hour’s drive from Reykjavik, and it is Iceland’s largest lake in both size and volume - with an area of 84km2 and water depths of up to 115 meters. The Thingvellir National Park is situated in the northern corner of the lake, and it encompasses the historic site, where the Icelandic parliament, Altinget, was formed back in 930. The National Park is also the home of Silfra, a deep and fascinating fault line caused by tectonic plate movements, as well as Öxará, which is one of the main spawning grounds for the Thingvallavatn brown trout.

davvero entusiasmante con ninfe e mosche secche. Alle foci di alcuni affluenti si può pescare come in un fiume presentando l’esca controcorrente, aggiustando la lenza e usando indicatori di strike. E quando soffia forte il vento – cosa che accade terribilmente spesso in Islanda – si può pescare alla cieca con streamer. È un tipo di pesca piuttosto arduo, in cui si perlustra sistematicamente la battigia in cerca di branchi di pesci usando piccole imitazioni di spinarelli e salmerini alpini e recuperandole rapidamente; se ne possono ricavare veri mostri, però.

THINGVALLAVATN: Il Thingvallavatn si trova a mezz’ora di macchina da Reykjavik ed è il più grande lago islandese per dimensioni e volume, con una superficie di 84km2 e una profondità fino a 115 metri. La mia passione per la pesca a mosca comincia circa 10 anni fa, proprio quando mi sono trasferito in bassa Vallagarina, presso Ala, in Trentino, pittoresca cittadina nota per il centro storico rinascimentale e per il suo glorioso passato nell'ambito del commercio e la produzione di velluto. Da pescatore, quale sono sempre stato fin da bambino, ho cominciato subito a perlustrare il fiume che praticamente mi scorre sotto casa. E' proprio nel tratto lagarino, incorniciato dai vigneti che arrivano fin sulle sue sponde, che l'Adige si riprende il suo alveo naturale e diventa un susseguirsi di anse, curve, grandi laghi, raschi, correntoni e buche profonde. Qui ho avuto l'occasione di conoscere ed osservare i moschisti che pescavano immersi nelle acque del fiume. Folgorato da questi lanci eleganti e flessuosi, direi artistici, mi sono fiondato ad acquistare la prima canna da mosca. Una giornata di settembre, con i miei lanci da autodidatta, rudimentali, impacciati, direi comici a pensarci ora, ho ottenuto la mia prima cattura a secca: una fario nemmeno piccola è salita sulla mia Royal Wulf in totale dragaggio... Può succedere! Ho stampato nella memoria quella scena e da quel momento ho cominciato a crederci... Certo non si è mai finito di imparare, soprattutto con la pesca

a mosca, ma è passata un po' d'acqua sotto i ponti da quei timidi inizi... In questi dieci anni ho frequentato corsi di lancio e club, fatto viaggi di pesca, mi sono confrontato con esperti pescatori, mi sono appassionato alla costruzione di artificiali e ho partecipato ad un percorso formativo per diventare Guida di Pesca del team Trentino Fishing, insomma ora mi ritengo sicuramente un po' più esperto e in grado di trasmettere qualche esperienza. Come si è capito il mio luogo di pesca prediletto è l'Adige, un fiume estremamente difficile, con pesci lunatici, apparentemente inattivi, che bollano quando decidono loro. Trovarlo in condizioni ottimali per il flyfishing è piuttosto difficile e generalmente i momenti migliori sono la primavera e l'autunno. Essendo un tratto di fondovalle, risente di tutto quello che succede a monte, a volte basta un forte temporale in una valle laterale nel corso della notte per rovinare tutto. L'estate invece trasporta l'acqua di scioglimento dei ghiacciai, grigiastra e impescabile, ma qualche finestra si apre quando in alta quota non è troppo caldo, e bisogna cogliere l'attimo perchè i Coup De Soir sono magici. Il fiume è popolato soprattutto dalla mitica trota marmorata. Questo salmonide qui può raggiungere dimensioni notevoli, non sono impossibili catture di esemplari oltre il metro

per più di 10 chilogrammi di peso, catturati solo con grossi streamer e soprattutto a spinning. Da quando ho incominciato questa nuova attività di guida di pesca, che affianca la mia principale professione di fotografo, ho esplorato molti nuovi spot in giro per il trentino: dall'Avisio al Noce, dal Sarca al Leno e altri piccoli torrenti di montagna, sempre alla ricerca di ambienti integri, avventurosi e paesaggisticamente belli; naturalmente sempre con la macchina fotografica al collo.

Quando l'Adige non è in condizioni ottimali, è per me importante avere sempre pronto il piano B e vedo che gli ospiti che si fermano più giorni nel nostro lodge desiderano poter esplorare più fiumi durante la loro permanenza. Direi proprio che questo nuovo lavoro di guida e la fotografia ben si combinano, soprattutto perché entrambi sono dettati dalla passione e mi permettono di stare a contatto con la natura. Mi piace vivere un po' selvaggiamente e spesso parto con il mio piccolo camper per due, tre giorni di avventura

My passion for fly fishing began about 10 years ago, when I moved to the low Vallagarina, near Ala in Trentino. It is a picturesque small town known for its Renaissance town center and glorious past in commerce and velvet manufacture. As I have been a fisherman since my childhood, I immediately began to scour the river flowing practically under my house. Just in the Lagarina stretch, surrounded by vineyards reaching as far as its banks, the Adige River gets its natural bed again and bends, curves, big lakes, riffles, ripples and deep potholes come in succession. Here I had the chance to get to know and observe the fly anglers who fished immersed in the water of the river. Struck by those elegant and winding, almost artistic casts, I dashed to buy my first fly rod. On a September day, with my self-taught,

rudimental and clumsy casts, I would say comic casts if I think back again now, I got my first catch with a dry fly: a not even small, brown trout got on my Royal Wulff in total dredging... This can happen! That scene is impressed in my memory and since that moment I began to believe in it... Of course, you never finish learning, particularly in fly fishing, but some water has flowed under the bridge since those weak beginnings...In these 10 years I have attended cast courses and clubs, made fishing trips, and discussed with expert fishermen. I developed a passion for fly making and attended a training course to become a Fishing Guide for the team, Trentino Fishing. Therefore, I am certainly a bit more expert now and able to transmit some experience. As you have understood, my favorite fishing place is the

Adige River, which is extremely difficult with moody, seemingly inactive fish, which rise when they decide to. Finding excellent conditions for fly-fishing is rather difficult and the best seasons are generally spring and autumn. As it is a stretch flowing in the valley floor, it is influenced by all that happens upstream; sometimes a strong storm in a lateral valley in the course of the night is enough to ruin everything. In the summer, instead, it transports ice water from the glaciers, which is greyish and unfishable, but there are a few chances when it is not too hot at high altitude, and you must seize the day, because the Coups De Soirs are magic. The river is populated by the mythic marbled trout. This salmonid can reach considerable sizes here, and catches of specimens of over one meter and weighing 10 kilos are not impossible, caught only with big streamers and in

particular with the spinning technique. Since I began this new activity as a fishing guide besides being first a professional photographer, I have explored a lot of new spots all over Trentino: from Avisio to Noce, and Sarca to Leno and some other small mountain chalks, always in search of intact, adventurous and panoramically beautiful environments, of course, always with a camera around my neck. When the Adige River is not under excellent conditions, it is important to me to always have a backplan ready and I see to it that the guests staying several days at our lodge wish to explore more rivers during their stay. I would really say that these new jobs as a guide and photographer are well combined, particularly because both are dictated by passion and allow me to stay in contact with nature. I like living a bit wildly and I often leave with

Sono ormai una pescatrice incallita e abbastanza selettiva da desiderare comunque sempre il meglio, che però spesso non è affatto dietro l’angolo ed è fonte di nostalgia, come ogni meraviglioso luogo (fiume, dovrei dire) che ho guadato in tempi lontani e forse più selvaggi. Tanto che sono riluttante a tornare sulle rive che ho molto amato per paura che il tempo e il marketing ottuso abbiano irrimediabilmente distrutto l’atmosfera e il senso di lontananza che si prova quando solo la natura intatta ti circonda.

Il Cedar Lodge nel sud della Nuova Zelanda, un “fly-in helicopter lodge” sul fiume Makarora nella Riserva del Mount Aspring, è uno di quei luoghi; i fiumi che vi si intrecciano sono tutti paradisiaci per noi fanatici di Rainbow e Brown trout. Il Dingle e lo Jung pullulano di pesci agguerriti e di buone dimensioni e la guida esperta dell’amico Dick Fraser (un libanese trapiantato che con la moglie Robyn e la figlia Juliette hanno gestito eccellentemente il lodge in questo paradiso) era la quadratura del cerchio.

I am now an inveterate and quite selective fisherwoman to desire always the best, but often it is not around the corner and is a source of nostalgia, like every wonderful place (river, I should say) that I have wandered in distant, and perhaps more savage, times. So much so that I am reluctant to go back to the shores that I have loved so much for fear that time and obtuse marketing have irreparably destroyed the atmosphere and the sense of remoteness that is felt when only intact nature surrounds you.

The Cedar Lodge in southern New Zealand, a "fly-in helicopter lodge" on the Makarora River in the Mount Aspring Reserve, is one of those places, the intertwining rivers are heaven for us fanatics of Rainbow and Brown trout. The Dingle and the Jung are teeming with well-built, good-sized fish and the expert guidance of my friend Dick Fraser (a Lebanese who with his wife Robyn and daughter Juliette managed the lodge excellently in this paradise) was the squaring of the circle.

Dick è un organizzatore provetto; anche se diluvia, non si perde d’animo e modifica i programmi di mille ospiti senza apparente fatica, pilota l’elicottero con ogni condizione atmosferica, guida gli ospiti che più gli piacciono e racconta storielle spassose su questo sport e i suoi cultori. Molti dei “guru” della pesca a mosca sono passati dal Cedar perché il posto è bellissimo, l’organizzazione impeccabile, le trote grandi e veloci e perché c’era lui, il nostro Dick, con la sua allegra vitalità e la simpatia di un vecchio attore che trasforma

in un affiatato cast tutti gli ospiti del lodge. Grazie al suo carattere Dick è sopravvissuto bene a un infarto e mantenuto intatto il suo humour. Scrivo queste poche righe per dire che, da quando il Cedar Lodge è stato venduto e Dick ha deciso di non esser più lì ad attenderci sorridente, ho deciso di non tornare, per mantenere intatto il ricordo del “prima”, ricordo prezioso e indelebile.

Dick is a tried-and-tested organizer; even if it rains, it does not lose heart and modifies the programs of a thousand guests without apparent fatigue, it pilots the helicopter with all weather conditions, guides the guests he likes most and tells hilarious stories about this sport and its lovers. Many of the "gurus" of fly fishing have passed by Cedar because the place is beautiful, the organization flawless, the trout great and fast and because he was there, our Dick, with his cheerful vitality and the sympathy of an

old actor who turns all the lodge guests into a tight-knit cast. Thanks to his personality Dick has survived a heart attack well and kept his humor intact. I write these few lines to say that, since the Cedar Lodge was sold and Dick decided not to be there waiting for us smiling, I decided not to return, to keep the precious indelible memory of our first encounter untouched.

Ci sono molti “grandi“ artisti inglesi che hanno contribuito notevolmente a fare la storia dell’arte, in questo articolo vorrei parlare di alcuni di loro che in qualche modo sono in relazione con la pesca. Iniziamo da John Constable, inseparabile dalla campagna inglese del Suffolk e in particolare dal fiume Stour nei dintorni di Dedham e Flatford. Constable aveva ereditato averi sufficienti da permettergli di dedicarsi solamente alla pittura e per alcuni anni lavorò per catturare il paesaggio locale e i suoi effetti luminosi, creando così un nuovo genere di arte paesaggistica. A quel tempo il fiume Stour era pieno di chiatte, ma non abbastanza da impedire ai ragazzi

locali di pescare e a Constable di ritrarli. Il famoso Thomas Gainsborough non ha mai descritto il pescatore iconico come Constable, ma aveva una grande passione per le attività all'aria aperta e qualche pescatore si può trovare nelle sue opere. Several artists who are amongst the greatest that England ever produced are somehow linked to fishing. John Constableâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reputation is inseparable from the Suffolk countryside and particularly from the River Stour around Dedham and Flatford. Constable had inherited well enough to dedicate himself to painting and for some years he worked on capturing the local landscape and the effects of its light, in so doing creating a whole new genre of landscape art. At that time there was a good deal of commercial barge traffic on the river Stour, but not enough to prevent the local boys from fishing and Constable to paint them. Thomas Gainsborough has not left anglers anything as iconic as Constable, but he was quite an outdoor enthusiast and an angler or two can be found in his works. Shaw Sparrow says that he fished â&#x20AC;&#x153; from time to timeâ&#x20AC;?. Gainsborough was born nearly 50 years before Constable and died before the latter began to exhibit. Like Constable he was a Suffolk man, having been born in Sudbury, but his artistic inspiration was rather less local. The Dutch style of landscape painting, Rococo decoration and portraiture all engaged his interest. While portraits paid

known that Turner was also an artist with a fly-rod. He fished the Thames and some of its tributaries and was a guest at the Houghton Club on the river Test in 1829. Turnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work fequently took him around the country,

mostly travelling on foot, and he would always take his flyrod with him. His love of angling is demostrated by the frequency with which he added an angler to scenes that called for it.

Laureatosi all'Istituto di aviazione di Kharkov, ha lavorato per un po’ di tempo nell'industria aeronautica dell'ex Unione Sovietica partecipando anche alla progettazione e alla costruzione dell' aereo AN-124 "Ruslan". All’università ha svolto ricerche teoriche e pratiche sulle dinamiche del carrello di atterraggio degli aerei e ha partecipato a ricerche legate alla costruzione dello shuttle spaziale sovietico "Buran". Alexander conosce le moderne tecnologie nel settore aerospaziale e le applica alla realizzazione dei prodotti Megoff. Kharkov è una vasta regione specializzata nella costruzione di aerei, quindi

The MEGOFF fly reels company was founded by Alexander Kaplun. He graduated at the Kharkov Aviation Institute. Alexander worked in the aircraft manufacturing industry of the former USSR and worked on the construction of the AN-124 "Ruslan". At college he did theoretical and practical research on the dynamics of aircraft landing gear; he also took part in research connected with the construction of the Soviet space shuttle "Buran". Alexander is familiar with modern technologies in the aerospace industry and he applies them to the manufacturing of Megoff products. Alexander has been a fisherman for more than 30 years, and fly fishing for more than 20 years, much of that time making his own fishing tackle and tying his own flies. This is about more than cutting edge mechanics, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about

All types use stainless steel ball bearings and one-way clutches. The reels are made with corrosion proof material, like titanium, bronze and stainless steel. “Finalmente ci siamo, stiamo per atterrare, guardate fuori”! Tutti guardiamo fuori e rimaniamo attoniti… Per alcuni secondi ho l’impressione di atterrare su una delle più belle “flat” che io abbia mai visto… poi intravedo la pista. L’aereo che ci ha portato da Mahe, capitale delle Seychelles, fino

all’atollo di Farquhar in poco meno di 2 ore di volo si ferma e dopo pochi minuti siamo già a bordo del carro trainato da un trattore che ci porta nel luogo dove alloggeremo per tutta la settimana. Le strutture sono nuove, posizionate a pochi metri dal mare e ad una cinquantina dalle lance e dai numerosi

capital of Seychelles, up to the atoll of Farquhar, stops in a little less than a 2-hour flight. After some minutes we are already onboard a cart pulled by a tractor, which will take us to the place where we will stay for the whole week. The facilities are not new but located a few meters from the sea

and about 50 meters from the motor boats and the big GTs, the “pets” constantly patrolling the area. The “main building” consists of a kitchen, a large dining room and a relaxation area, and there is a café outside. The rooms are comfortable and provided with a large private bathroom and

Sono delle meraviglie della natura. Essere in questi spot e lanciare le nostre mosche è spettacolare. Le Coral Heads sono ottime zone di caccia per molti pesci predatori come Snappers, cernie, GT, Napoleon Wrasse, squali e altro. A Farquhar ci sono molte Coral Heads. Prepariamo subito l’attrezzatura con

that I hooked the biggest fish. Such emotions are hard to describe; they were short, but extremely intense. I caught fish among the Coral Heads, where I broke 3 of my fly lines and got very angry, but I still want to go back to Farquhar and cast among the Coral Heads!
