It is with pleasure that from the beginning of 2021 we announce the partnership between H2O Magazine and the Russian magazine Нахлыст. These two magazines, both specialized in fly fishing, are among the most followed in Europe by fishermen / travelers and enthusiasts of this splendid fishing technique. The magazines have a very similar distribution, they are sent free of charge to selected databases ranging from various fishing reserves, flyfishermen,fishing shops which in turn give copies to their customers, companies in the sector, tourist organizations, equipment distributors and owners of fishing lodges. All this in addition to the usual subscription.

Furthermore, both magazines are visible for free on the web. The collaboration stems from the need of some international fishing lodges and companies of being promoted throughout Europe. We have therefore thought to join the western European distribution of H2O magazine with the distribution of Нахлыст magazine on Russian and Eastern countries to cover the entire European market.

The service we are able to offer is the best contact bank on the fly fishing market in Europe.

E’ con piacere che dall’inizio del 2021 annunciamo la partnership fra H2O Magazine e la rivista russa Нахлыст. Queste riviste, tutte e due specializzate nella pesca a mosca, sono fra le più seguite in Europa da pescatori / viaggiatori ed appassionati di questa splendida tecnica di pesca. Le due riviste hanno una distribuzione molto simile, vengono infatti inviate gratuitamente a banche dati selezionate che comprendono svariate riserve di pesca, privati, negozi di pesca che a loro volta regalano le copie ai propri clienti, aziende del settore, enti turistici, distributori di attrezzature e titolari di diversi lodge. Questo, oltre al consueto abbonamento.

Inoltre tutte e due le riviste sono visibili gratuitamente sul web.

La collaborazione nasce dall’esigenza di alcuni lodge di pesca internazionali e aziende che hanno bisogno di avere visibilità e pubblicizzarsi su tutto il territorio europeo. Abbiamo quindi pensato di sommare la distribuzione west europea di H2O magazine con la distribuzione in Russia e nei Paesi dell’Est di Нахлыст magazine per poter coprire tutto il mercato europeo.

Anche nei viaggi di pesca c’è stata una grande evoluzione, e una trasformazione nella vendita di queste avventure. Alla fine dell’ottocento si leggevano gli articoli dei primi temerari che si avventuravano in zone inesplorate alla ricerca di grandi catture in fiumi inesplorati. Erano tempi in cui effettivamente i pescatori erano esploratori che dovevano testare luoghi, attrezzature e spesso creare gli accessi che successivamente sarebbero poi stati usati dagli altri. Il fascino di queste avventure lo si vede nelle

vecchie foto in bianco e nero appese nei lodge o pubblicate in qualche rivista. Ora è tutto più costruito, e i nuovi “prodotti” che arrivano sul mercato non sono altro che accordi commerciali rifatti, diritti di pesca venduti ad altri tour operator specializzati oppure strategie di marketing spinte all’eccesso per luoghi già conosciuti ma semplicemente passati di proprietà. Credo proprio che non ci siano rimasti luoghi nuovi in cui pescare, acque sconosciute o fiumi pieni di pesci che non sono mai stati

pescati prima. I fiumi teatro di grandi risalite, che siano in terra del Fuoco o in Penisola di Kola, sono già “contrattualizzati” da un anno all’altro, con i prezzi delle settimane più interessanti già definiti a seconda dei pesci catturati o conteggiati nelle scale di rimonta. Lo stesso vale per le acque salate. Le settimane, in molti lodge, sono organizzate con rotazioni ogni 6 ore delle pool, oppure si cambia guida durante la settimana e si pesca in modo molto strutturato. Tutto questo porta le guide ad accompagnare i clienti nelle stesse pool pescando nello stesso modo, e con le

stesse mosche. Credo si sia persa un po’ la voglia di scoprire, e la pressione sulle stesse pool abbassa inesorabilmente la qualità della pesca. Sembra incredibile ma anche in acqua salata si sta affacciando il problema della troppa pressione di pesca, con pesci diffidenti che diventano sempre più difficili stagione dopo stagione. Anche i lodge ormai sono standardizzati con orari prestabiliti e turni che si somigliano sempre di più. Stesse barche, spesso stesse guide che fanno il giro dei lodge, stessi pretrip form e cataloghi. Ora, non che questo sia un male, è che

semplicemente si è perso molto del fascino dell’avventura.

anche quello dei viaggi di pesca non fa eccezioni, quindi è comprensibile e credo giustificato il fatto che molti titolari di lodge si stiano organizzando per vendere le loro destinazioni direttamente ai pescatori. Allo stesso modo i pescatori sono sempre più orientati a comprare vacanze senza passare dai tour operator, complice sicuramente il web e anche la poca professionalità di alcuni addetti ai lavori. Le scelte non sono tante, o si prende l’aereo e si va a catturare qualche bel pesce un po’ preconfezionato, o si sta vicino a casa a catturare qualche pesce immesso qualche giorno prima.

Forse l’appiattimento più grande di questo mercato lo si vede dal fatto che gli stessi 10 tour operator più importanti del mondo hanno in catalogo le stesse 40 destinazioni di pesca. Se poi ci mettiamo anche alcuni “mezzi viaggiatori” che vendono viaggi di pesca di destinazioni dove non sono mai stati a pescare solamente postando qualche foto sui social, ecco che siamo arrivati al fondo del barile. Il mercato internazionale della distribuzione in tutti i settori sta tagliando passaggi e

There has been a great evolution also in fishing trips, and a transformation in the way these adventures are being promoted.

In the late 19th century, people could read the articles of the first daredevils that ventured into the rivers of unexplored areas, looking for big catches. In those times anglers were indeed explorers who had to test places and equipment as well as create access points which would then be used by others. The charm of these adventures can be seen in old black and white photos hanging in lodges or published in magazines. Everything is more artificial now. The new “products” which arrive on the market are

nothing else but revised commercial agreements, fishing rights sold to other specialized tour operators or exaggerated marketing strategies concerning places already known, but just taken over.

I really believe that there are no new places to fish in, unknown waters or rivers full of fish and never fished till now. Rivers where there are remarkable runs, whether in the Tierra del Fuego or in the Kola Peninsula, are already “under contract” from one year to the next, with the prices of the most interesting weeks already set, based on the fish caught or counted in the fish ladders. The same applies to saltwater. In many lodges, weeks are organized with

pool rotations every 6 hours, or your guide changes during the week and you fish in a very structured way. This induces guides to take their clients to the same pools over and over again, fishing in the same manner and with the same flies. I think the desire to discover has gotten a bit lost and the pressure on the same pools inexorably lowers the quality of fishing. It sounds incredible, but even in saltwater, the fishing pressure is starting to be excessive,

with suspicious fish getting more and more difficult to catch season after season. Even lodges are by now standardized, with set times and shifts that are more and more similar. The same boats, and often the same guides make the tour of the lodges, and pre-trip forms and catalogues are also the same. Well, this is not really bad, but much of the fascination has got lost. Perhaps you can note the flattening of this market from the fact that the

same 10 world-leading tour operators have the same 40 fishing destinations in their catalogues. Add to this a few photos posted by some improvised travellers on social networks, in order to sell fishing expeditions to destinations they have never been fishing in, and we have gone down deeper.

Therefore, it is clear and, I think, justified that a lot of lodge owners are organizing themselves in selling their destinations directly to anglers. In the same way anglers are likewise more and more oriented to buying holidays without turning to a tour operator. Of course, this is due to the web and the lacking professionalism of some insiders. There is no other choice. You will take the plane, go and catch some beautiful prepackaged fish or you will remain near home and catch some fish that was put in a few days before.

The international market of distribution has been cutting intermediaries in all sectors and fishing trips are no exception.

La fortuna dell’ultimo giorno nella terra di Gengis Khan Mi ha sempre colpito il fatto che, nella pesca a mosca, l’ultimo lancio della giornata – o l’ultimo giorno di viaggio – produce spesso il pesce più memorabile. E’ stato così anche nel mio ultimo viaggio nella steppa mongola, pescando nel luogo di nascita di Gengis Khan con Mongolia River Outfitters.

Eravamo stati sul fiume per due settimane, galleggiando su duecento miglia di habitat primigenio nel cuore del primo Santuario protetto dei Taimen al mondo. Avevamo mangiato ottimo cibo e bevuto la vodka mongola, il servizio era stato eccezionale, lo spirito di squadra incredibile, e tutta quella pesca ci aveva divertito un sacco, con molti taimen tratti a riva nel corso della settimana. Mentre la maggioranza dei componenti nel nostro gruppo aveva catturato un pesce da trofeo o due, il mio amico Allan ed io avevamo ancora da mettere nella rete un taimen di dimensioni significative.

Era l’ultimo giorno della nostra avventura, e il sole stava già cominciando ad abbassarsi sull’orizzonte. Avevamo più spazio sul fiume e forse un’ora di luce ancora, dunque abbiamo continuato a lanciare le nostre grosse mosche da superficie per i taimen, imitazioni di esche vive ferite, nella speranza che arrivasse un predatore eccezionalmente grosso con l’intenzione di assestare il colpo mortale.

In uno spazio profondo adiacente alla riva, all’ombra dei salici allineati, un’enorme scia è partita alla carica verso la mia mosca e un grosso taimen è uscito fuori dall’acqua per inghiottirla, ma non c’è riuscito. Ho strippato per muovere la mosca e il pesce è tornato indietro per colpirla ancora, questa volta mancando il set di ami.

Sono riuscito a vedere ancora il pesce al seguito per un momento e poi è sparito.

Fortunatamente, i taimen sono pesci indomiti e di routine attaccano la loro preda a più riprese.

La nostra guida mongola, Tulga, ha tirato forte i remi per spostarci controcorrente, e io ho lanciato nello stesso punto. Il pesce ha caricato la mosca come per vendetta, evidentemente irritato dal fatto che gli fosse sfuggita la prima volta. Ho strippato con uno strike robusto e stavolta l’amo ha fatto presa. Il taimen ha cominciato istantaneamente a tirarlo verso valle e io lentamente ho cercato di fargli attraversare la corrente mentre Tulga remava verso l’altra riva del fiume, per trovare un punto in cui farlo entrare nella rete. Quindi ha gettato l’ancora in acque poco profonde e si è tuffato in acqua per prendere il pesce con la rete. Il pesce faceva 36 pollici di lunghezza; non era il taimen più grosso del fiume, ma pur sempre un bell’esemplare e a quel tempo il più grosso taimen che io avessi

Last Day Luck in the Land of Chinghis Khan I’ve always been in awe of that inexplicable reality in fly fishing where the last cast of the day – or the last day of a trip – so often brings out the most memorable fish. So it was on my most recent trip to the Mongolian Steppe, fishing in the birthplace of Chinghis Khan with Mongolia River Outfitters.

We had been on the river for two weeks, floating over two hundred miles of pristine habitat in the heart of the world’s first protected Taimen Sanctuary. We had enjoyed great food and Mongolian vodka, exceptional service, incredible camaraderie, and a lot of fun fishing with many taimen landed throughout the week.

While most in our group had landed a trophy fish or two, my friend Allan and I still had yet to put a significant-sized taimen in the net.

It was our last day of the adventure, and the sun was already beginning to dip low on the horizon. We had more river left to fish and maybe an hour of daylight, so we kept casting our large topwater taimen flies, imitating wounded baitfish on the surface in the hope that an exceptionally large predator would go for the kill.

In a deep slot adjacent to the willow-lined bank, a huge wake charged out after my fly and a big taimen jumped clear out of the water and tried to eat on the way down. But it missed the fly. I stripped once to move the fly, and the fish came back and hit it again. This time I missed the hookset. I could see the fish still following for a moment. Then it disappeared.

Fortunately, taimen are fearless fish and routinely attack their prey multiple times.

Our Mongolian guide, Tulga, pulled hard on the oars to move us back upstream, and I cast into the same spot. The fish charged the fly with a vengeance, obviously angered that it had gotten away the first time. I strip-struck firmly, and this time the hook stuck. Instantly the taimen started pulling off line downstream. I slowly worked it across the current as Tulga rowed to the other side of the river to find a place to net the fish.

He anchored in the shallows and hopped out, diving at the fish to get it in the net. The fish stretched the tape at 36 inches; not the largest taimen in the river, but a beautiful specimen and at that time the largest taimen I’d ever landed.

Our day was made, but it wasn’t quite over. A few bends further down the river, Allan cast into a logjam a few feet off the bank. The line tightened and he thought he had a log, but as Tulga rowed over the line started moving. It wasn’t a snag! We could see the brilliant red tail of a very large taimen, just before it shook its massive head and spit the hook.

Avevamo fatto giornata, e non era finita. Dopo alcune curve del fiume, verso valle, Allan ha lanciato su un tronco messo di traverso, ad alcuni piedi da riva. La lenza si è tesa e lui ha pensato di aver agganciato il tronco, ma quando Tulga ci ha remato sopra, la lenza ha cominciato a muoversi. Non era un oggetto impigliato! Siamo riusciti a scorgere la brillante coda rossa di un grossissimo taimen, giusto prima che sputasse l’amo scuotendo la sua testa enorme.

La Mongolia è il Paese meno densamente popolato al mondo. Al di fuori di Ulaanbaatar – l’unica grande città del Paese – il resto di questo vasto territorio è popolato (scarsamente) da nomadi che vivono di quello che la terra offre, prendendosi cura delle loro mandrie di mucche, pecore, capre, yak e cammelli.

Non ci sono recinti, le strade sono molto poche e le persone che incontrerete una volta lasciata la città saranno probabilmente a cavallo.

Tulga allora ha remato forte controcorrente per riportarci nella medesima posizione e Allan ha lanciato nuovamente sul tronco di traverso. Una strippata, ed ecco che il pesce era di nuovo lì a tirare la lenza mentre si dirigeva verso valle. Allan ha fatto volteggiare il pesce attorno a quel tronco che ostruiva la corrente e infine lo ha catturato nella rete.

Tulga ha misurato il pesce, che era poco più di 41 pollici, ha preso alcuni campioni di squame per gli studi scientifici in corso e per il loro lavoro di tutela della specie, e infine ha rilasciato il taimen nella corrente.

Quando la gente comune immagina la Mongolia, visualizza il deserto del Gobi o la vasta steppa erbosa. Il nord della Mongolia, però, ha montagne con le cime innevate, fitte foreste e prati disseminati di fiori selvatici. Ci sono migliaia di miglia di fiumi e laghi nel nord della Mongolia. Questa è la terra dei taimen.

E’stato un modo incredibile di terminare un viaggio già memorabile. E ci ha ricordato ancora una volta le tante ragioni per cui l’esperienza di pesca in Mongolia è forse la migliore in assoluto al mondo.

Questo è il motivo per cui continuo a tornarci.

Mongolia River Outfitters ha cominciato a pescare a mosca in Mongolia più di venti anni fa. Dopo aver esplorato i maggiori fiumi da taimen quasi ad uno ad uno, hanno selezionato personalmente quelli che ritenevano essere i migliori fiumi da pesca a mosca su cui portare i pescatori ogni anno da giugno a ottobre.

Questi fiumi remoti e selvaggi ospitano le popolazioni più sane e robuste di taimen al mondo.

Tulga rowed hard against the current to get us back into position and Allan cast back into the logjam. One strip, and the fish was there again, instantly tearing off line heading downstream. Allan weaved the fish in and out of the snags and eventually led it into the net.

Tulga measured the fish at just past 41 inches, took scale samples for their ongoing scientific studies and conservation work, and released the taimen back into the river.

It was an incredible way to end an already memorable trip. And it reminded us once again one of the many reasons that Mongolia is perhaps the finest angling experience anywhere in the world. And why I keep coming back for more.

Mongolia, the Destination Mongolia is the least densely populated country in the world. Outside of Ulaanbaatar – the only major city in the country – the remainder of this vast wilderness is sparsely populated by nomads who live off the land tending their herds of cows, sheep, goats, yaks, and camels.

There are no fences, very few roads, and what people you encounter once you leave the city will likely be upon horseback.

When most folks imagine Mongolia, they visualize the Gobi desert or the vast grassland steppe. Northern Mongolia, however, is a place of snowcapped mountains, dense forests, and meadows filled with wild flowers. There are thousands of miles of rivers and lakes in northern Mongolia. This is the land of the taimen.

Mongolia River Outfitters began fly-fishing in Mongolia more than twenty years ago. After exploring nearly every major taimen river in the country, they personally selected what they believe to be the finest fly angling rivers to outfit anglers each year from June through October.

These wild, remote rivers are home to the world’s healthiest, most robust populations of taimen.

Taimen Taimen are the largest salmonid on earth. They are aggressive predators that attack streamers or topwater flies with reckless abandon. Taimen will migrate great distances each year to access spawning, feeding, and winter habitats.

In Mongolia, taimen can live for nearly fifty years and reach over sixty inches in length.

Every year a few truly trophy-sized taimen -over fifty inches, or nearly two meters in length – are landed, while most Mongolian taimen caught on the fly are generally between 25 – 40 inches.

Taimen I taimen sono i più grandi salmonidi sulla terra.

Sono predatori aggressivi che attaccano gli streamer o le mosche in superficie con slancio temerario. I taimen percorrono grandi distanze ogni anno per accedere agli habitat adatti per deporre le uova, nutrirsi e trascorrere l’inverno.

In Mongolia, i taimen possono vivere per quasi cinquant’anni e raggiungere una lunghezza di oltre sessanta pollici. Ogni anno vengono tratti a riva alcuni taimen veramente da trofeo – oltre i cinquanta pollici, o quasi due metri di lunghezza –, mentre la maggioranza dei taimen mongoli presi a mosca sono generalmente tra i 25 e i 40 pollici.

I taimen sono famosi per il loro feroce appetito e per gli strike esplosivi. La loro fonte primaria di cibo sono le trote e i temoli, ma si cibano frequentemente anche in superficie, andando a caccia di piccoli mammiferi e persino di anatroccoli.

La presa di un taimen su una mosca può essere l’attacco più possente ed emozionante di qualsiasi pesce d’acqua dolce. I taimen spesso guizzano completamente fuori dall’acqua durante lo strike. Hanno però bocche molto ossute, e di conseguenza può essere piuttosto difficile allamarli. Fortunatamente sono così aggressivi che quasi sempre attaccano la loro preda a più riprese. Non è raro, per i pescatori, allamare lo stesso pesce diverse volte prima di trarlo finalmente a riva, o perderlo completamente.

In realtà, sono più i taimen da trofeo allamati e poi persi che quelli tratti a riva, il che aumenta ulteriormente il loro fascino mitico e l’ossessione, simile a un culto, che suscitano nella maggior parte dei pescatori che hanno avuto la fortuna di interagire con loro.

Altre specie Anche se i taimen costituiscono spesso il motivo che porta i viaggiatori in Mongolia, le stesse acque pure e produttive abitate dai mostruosi taimen producono anche i combattivi lenok e temoli, così come rare ed elusive trote Amur e persino lucci.

I lenok sono un antico ceppo di trote siberiane, con corpi dorati, fasce di colore rosso acceso e chiazze nere. Queste trote native spesso raggiungono le zone, lungo le rive dei fiumi, in cui stanno i temoli, in parte per proteggersi dai taimen, e anche per approfittare opportunamente dell’abbondanza di cavallette, efemere e plecotteri che vi trovano.

Tendenzialmente vanno dai 14 pollici in su, fino alle sei libbre.

Taimen are famed for their ferocious appetite and explosive strike. Their primary food source is trout and graying, but they also frequently feed on the surface, hunting for small mammals and even ducklings.

The take of a taimen on a fly may be the most impressive, powerful attack of any freshwater fish. Taimen often leap completely out of the water on the strike. They have very bony mouths, however, and can therefore be quite difficult to hook. Fortunately, they are so aggressive they will almost always attack their prey multiple times. It is not uncommon for anglers to hook the same fish several times before finally landing – or losing – their quarry.

Indeed, more trophy taimen are hooked and lost than landed, further adding to their mythical allure and the almost cult-like obsession they bring to most anglers who have had the good fortune to interact with them.

Other Species While taimen are often the addiction that drives anglers to Mongolia, the same pristine and productive water that holds monster taimen also produces hard-fighting lenok and grayling, as well as rare and elusive Amur trout and even pike.

Lenok are an ancient strain of Siberian trout, with golden bodies, bright red bands and black spots. These native trout often join the pods of grayling that hold along banks of the rivers; partly as protection from taimen, and conveniently to slurp the abundant grasshopper, mayfly and stonefly hatches. They tend to range from 14 inches to upwards of six pounds.

Amur Trout are found only in a few drainages in the world, including Mongolia River Outfitter’s eastern operation. These fish resemble a very large brown trout, and are typically from 3-8 pounds. They are equally as aggressive as taimen and are frequently caught striking the same flies.

As a bonus, unique Amur Pike – toothy, aggressive predators that lurk in deep pools off the main channel -- are also found in these rivers, and put a serious bend in an 8 or 9 weight rod.

Conservation: Taimen historically had a massive range, spread from Europe all the way across Siberia. Today, however, they are quite scarce over much of their traditional habitat. Taimen are highly valued as a sport fish because of their incredible size and beauty, yet because they have such a long lifespan and slow growth cycle they are highly susceptible to harvest.

working closely with the Government of Mongolia over 20 years ago to begin protecting these amazing fish. In 2008, they formed the world’s first “Taimen Sanctuary.” A few years later they added Fish Mongolia to create a second Taimen Sanctuary.

Together these rivers represent over 400 miles (650 km) of taimen habitat conserved in partnership with the local communities. These are the only two rivers in Mongolia designated both "catch and release" for all anglers and "fly-fishing only" for all international anglers (International anglers may not legally access these rivers without a permit secured through either Fish Mongolia or Mongolia River Outfitters). The use of treble hooks, motorboats, construction of permanent tourism infrastructure, introduction of hatchery fish, commercial forestry and mining are each prohibited in both Taimen Sanctuaries.

> Hi Markus, first of all tell us how a German can work in fisheries management in Ireland Well, I guess you need a little bit of luck and have to be at the right place at the right time. But joke aside, I’ve always had a very strong connection with Ireland. I actually caught my first ever fish while on a family holiday in Ireland some 40 years ago. Since then I’ve been visiting Ireland on many occasions and fell in love with the country and its incredible flyfishing

opportunities. After finishing University, I decided to move to Ireland… a decision I didn’t regret! I’ve always been involved in environmental and fisheries management related work, given my background as a Hydrologist. One day the opportunity came up to apply for a position with the then North Western Regional Fisheries Board which has been subsumed into Inland Fisheries Ireland some ten years ago. My current role is Angling Advisor, which involves, among other things, marketing and promotion of Ireland’s angling.

Beh, credo che ci voglia un po’ di fortuna e che occorra essere al posto giusto nel momento giusto. Scherzi a parte, io ho sempre avuto un fortissimo legame con l’Irlanda. In effetti, ho preso il mio primo pesce in assoluto mentre ero in vacanza con la famiglia in Irlanda circa 40 anni fa. Da allora sono stato in Irlanda in diverse occasioni e mi sono innamorato di questo Paese e delle sue incredibili opportunità di pesca a mosca. Dopo aver terminato l’università, decisi di trasferirmi in Irlanda… una decisione di cui non mi pento! Mi sono sempre occupato di gestione ambientale e della pesca, visto il mio background di idrologo. Un giorno ebbi la possibilità di candidarmi per un posto all’allora North Western Regional Fisheries Board, che poi è stato incorporato nell’Inland Fisheries Ireland all’incirca dieci anni fa.

Questi contapesci ci forniscono dati solidi sul numero totale di salmoni che li percorrono e anche sui tempi delle risalite. In più, utilizziamo ulteriori parametri come le dichiarazioni di cattura e l’elettropesca.

Tutti i nostri fiumi da salmoni sono valutati su base annuale e classificati in tre diverse categorie (aperto, chiuso e catch & release). Se c’è un surplus, il fiume viene aperto alla pesca e ai pescatori è consentito prendere un certo numero di pesci durante l’anno. Dove le riserve sono al di sotto del limite di conservazione, la pesca non è consentita. Dove ci si attesta sul limite di conservazione, apriamo il fiume, ma solo per il catch & release, con ami singoli o doppi privi di ardiglione. Questo sistema ci consente di prendere le decisioni più appropriate per la gestione in termini di pesca sostenibile del salmone.

Abbiamo attivo anche un sistema di licenza & etichetta, in cui ogni salmone preso deve essere immediatamente etichettato e registrato. Attualmente i pescatori possono prendere un massimo di dieci salmoni l’anno, ma solo un numero limitato di pesci primaverili. > In Irlanda possono essere adottate varie tecniche di pesca per pesci diversi. Quale pensi sia l’elemento vincente?

Per essere un Paese così piccolo (l’Irlanda ha più o meno le dimensioni della Baviera), l’Irlanda vanta un’incredibile varietà di opportunità di pesca, grazie al fatto che le acque calde della corrente nordatlantica lambiscono le coste meridionali e occidentali, conferendo all’isola un clima più mite rispetto a quello che indicherebbe la sua posizione geografica. Il risultato è un favoloso mix di specie ittiche d’acqua calda e fredda, capace di entusiasmare tanto il pescatore esperto quanto quello occasionale. > Ireland has always had excellent fisheries management, what do you think are its strengths?

As Atlantic salmon stocks are in decline in most countries, I would like to focus on our salmon management which I believe is probably one of the most advanced since we manage every single of our over one hundred salmon rivers on an individual basis. Probably, the most important management tool are our fish counters which we operate on most major systems.

These counters provide us with robust data sets in terms of total number of salmon running the systems but also with regard to run timing. Additionally, we utilise a number of other parameters such as catch returns, electro fishing and red count data. All our salmon rivers are assessed on a yearly basis and classified into three different categories (open, closed and

catch & release). If there is a surplus, the river will be open for fishing and anglers will be allowed to take a certain number of fish during the year. Where stocks are below the conservation limit, fishing won’t be permitted.Where the conservation limit is borderline, we open the river but only on a catch & release basis with single or double barbless hooks. This system enables us to make the most appropriate management decisions in terms of sustainable salmon fishing.We also operate a licence & tagging system whereby every salmon that is kept must be tagged and recorded immediately.

At present, anglers can take a maximum of ten salmon per year but only a limited number of spring fish. > A variety of fishing techniques can be used in Ireland for different fish. Do you think it's the winning element?

The result is a fabulous mixture of cold and warm water fish species, capable of exciting the specialist or casual angler alike. Lough-style fishing for wild brown trout, sea trout or salmon on one of our many big lakes is probably one of the most iconic flyfishing experiences you can experience on the Emerald Isle.While Ireland has always been noted for its salmon and trout fishing, it is without doubt one of Europe’s leading pike fishing destinations. Irish pike are incredibly powerful and known for their acrobatics when hooked. Ireland is also a Mekka for saltwater fly fishing.Whether for off shore blue shark,

deep diving pollack or the elusive sea bass there are numerous species fly anglers can target in Ireland. > What are the 10 places in Ireland that you would recommend to those who have never been there?

It is quite a difficult task to pick just 10 places as there are many more I could recommend. However, as mentioned already, the West of Ireland with its great lakes is an absolute must I think.

Loughs such as Corrib, Mask, Carra or Conn to name but a few offer incredible wild brown trout fishing in breathtaking scenery.

Talking about lough fishing for brown trout, Lough Sheelin located in the east of the country is definitely another must particularly during mayfly time (spent gnat). If you are more into river fishing for selective wild trout the stunning River Suir

The Majestic Blackwater in Co. Cork is equally productive and an absolute jewel of a salmon river. Other fantastic salmon and sea trout fisheries including Delphi, Ballynahinch and Inagh are situated in the West and Connemara. If you are after pike, the Shannon system together with its big lakes Ree and Derg provides endless opportunities so does the Erne system further north. Talking about the coast, the “Wild Atlantic Way” is one of the world’s most spectacular coastal routes and offers endless shore angling opportunities from Co. Donegal in the north all the way down to Co. Cork in the south. Those whose main focus is on sea bass will find fantastic locations in Counties Kerry, Waterford and Wexford. And last but not least I have to mention my home water Carrowmore Lake in the far north west which is probably Europe’s best spring salmon stillwater fishery. > We often see the stand of Inland Fisheries Ireland at all the most important world fairs, how are you organized?

The principal function of IFI is the protection, management and conservation of Ireland’s inland fisheries resource.

However, we also have a major function in the marketing and promotion of angling. This involves producing guides, running various angling websites (we also have an Italian one: www.pescareinirlanda.info), dealing with angling queries, introducing juveniles and ladies to fishing, working with journalists and attending a number of key fishing fairs in Europe and the US. Attending such fairs serves a number of purposes. First and foremost we are promoting fishing in Ireland in general but also facilitate trade partners such as guides, fishery owners, charter skippers and accommodation providers so that they can showcase and promote their products and services. > We know that you have made bold choices, like removing industrial networks at sea for salmon fishing, are you satisfied with the results?

For the survival of Ireland’s salmon population the cessation of the commercial drift net fishery 13 years ago was absolutely essential. Estimates suggest that at least 60% of the returning fish were harvested by the drift nets resulting in steep population declines in many river systems. I am aware that the buy-out of the drift nets was a tough decision particularly

Nevertheless, in order to safe Ireland’s salmon population this step was without any alternatives. However, European salmon stocks are still in decline and additional measures and continuous research particularly with regard to survival rates at sea are absolutely critical.

New Zealand’s South Island would possibly be our number one freshwater choice. However, fishing on an English chalkstream or a wild Alpine river is equally enjoyable.

> I know that you and your girlfriend Chrissi travel a lot, what is your favorite destination?

We really enjoy fishing in Italy and have visited quite a number of beautiful rivers in Lombardy, Veneto, Piedmont, Umbria and Abruzzo so far.

Again a very tough question to answer as we enjoy salt and freshwater fly fishing equally as much. Casting a size 18 CDC on a Slovenian karst river can be as exciting as stalking spooky permit on a Yucatan flat or fighting a powerful tigerfish on the Zambesi. Well, as for saltwater, we would probably choose Australia’s Northwest Cape for its incredible species diversity.

> You often come fishing to Italy, what advice would you like to give to those who manage our rivers?

The quality of the fishing in most “no kill” zones is excellent.

However, it would be great if more such areas could be established. For visiting anglers it can also be a little bit tricky and confusing at times to obtain all the necessary documents and licences which can differ from region to region.

Some good friends of Henry Leonidas Rolfe (1823-81) describe him simply as “The Fish Painter”. Rolfe referred to himself selfdeprecatingly as “ The Scaly Painter”. In conventional terms, Rolfe was a “Still Life” painter, although the label “Still Life” is hardly appropriate for the representation of something that just died, or never moved. The French term “nature morte” seems more appropriate. Perhaps the biggest challenge to the artist

is to put the life back into something recently deprived of it or to give life to something that never had it. Illustrated books of fish have been quite numerous in Europe, going back to Gesner and Salviani in the 16th century, followed by Aldrovandi and Willughby in the next century and culminating in Bloch’s superb “ Ichthyologie” in the late 18th century. The first important British contributor seems to have Eleazar Albin, followed by

Henry, as we shall refer to him, was the youngest son of his father’s second marriage. He was born in Paris in 1823. Of the children of his father’s first marriage, two had artistic leanings, Edmund and Alexandra Frederick. The Rolfe family was firmly rooted

in London, Henry’s father and his grand-father having been goldsmiths in the City. It is assumed that Henry was taken back to London from Paris while still very young. Not much seems to be known about his youth and education, but he must have been developing as an artist. In this capacity he seems never to have been anything but a painter of fish and occasionally of fishing. At some point Henry became a keen angler, although

we do not know when and where he first fished. As an adult he was acknowledged to be an experienced angler, and several writers recall days out with him, included Alfred Jardine who took him pike fishing. Rolfe Joined the Piscatorial Society in 1864 and became an Honorary Member in 1869. He regularly gave pictures to the Society for them to use as prizes. Henry first exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy and the British

Institution in 1847 and 1848 respectively, i.e. when he was in his mid-twenties. Henry was evidently a very commercially oriented artist and he saw the potential in selling prints. While he had several wealthy patrons who bought his oils he could see that prints would expand his market. He recognised that advances in lithography offered the potential to render his originals to a sufficient artistic standard and at bearable cost.

The Russian Far East (Pacific coast of North Asia) is the real "final frontier" for fly fishermen - here many species of fish have never been caught with a fly. Information about this region is very limited, especially about species such as Sakhalin taimen, Cherry salmon or Arctic char or Kudka. Hence the need for a book that would introduce fishermen to the Northeast Asian region, its nature, rivers and lakes, its fish and fishing. The author of this book lives in the Russian Far East.

He is a professional scientist, Ph.D. in fish biology with over 90 scientific publications. He has also had extensive experience as a fishing guide and fishing trip organizer since 1992. Every summer and fall he leads expeditions to remote parts of the Far East and Siberia.

Mikhail Skopets, or Misha, is a highly reputed fishing biologist as well as an extraordinarily experienced fly fisherman. His discoveries have added four new species of fish to the region's known list, largely the result of his long journeys in the wilderness in the East. This book is not just about fly fishing, it is a travelogue that includes a broader view of natural history, geography, geology and the conservation perspective required to protect one of the few areas of the world still untouched by man.

In letteratura le informazioni su questa regione sono molto limitate, specialmente su specie come il Sakhalin taimen, Cherry salmon oppure sul salmerino bianco o Kudka. C’era bisogno quindi di un libro che facesse conoscere ai pescatori la regione dell'Asia nord-orientale, la sua natura, i fiumi e i laghi, i suoi pesci e la pesca. L'autore di questo libro vive nell'Estremo Oriente russo. È uno scienziato professionista, Ph.D. in biologia ittica con oltre 90 pubblicazioni scientifiche. Clouds were hanging between the trees and the mountain peaks, when we entered a small valley in the mountains of Austria. A little river called Donnersbach was running down little waterfalls at high speed next to the street. At one point the valley opened and a more flat and grassy landscape showed up 1000 meters above the sea-level. This little high mountain valley is called “Donnersbachtal” which means “Valley of Thunder”.

The weather was fitting in this scenario when we arrived on a rainy day at Hotel “Gasthof zur Gams” in late August. It had been raining the whole day which resulted in murky water. The

big advantage of the Donnersbach is the short length: the 9 km private stretch of the hotel is located in the headwaters of the river, so the river is clearing up very very quickly. The water is owned and managed by Roland Rüscher, the owner of Hotel Gasthof zur Gams and our host for the next days. Roland Rüscher is a passionate fly fisherman and knows his private water very well. After a welcome beer we went on a tour along the River, like every fly fishing guest. Mr Rüscher explained the story of the river, showed some good spots and gave all information we needed for some exciting and successful days on the river. The

Questa piccola vallata d’alta montagna si chiama “Donnersbachtal”, che significa “Valle del tuono”. Siamo arrivati all’albergo “Gasthof zur Gams” in una giornata piovosa di fine agosto. Aveva piovuto tutto il giorno e l’acqua era torbida. Il grande vantaggio del Donnersbach è la sua lunghezza ridotta: il tratto di 9 km di

proprietà dell’hotel si trova alla sorgente del fiume, che dunque torna limpido molto velocemente. Il corso d’acqua è di proprietà di Roland Rüscher, che lo gestisce ed è anche il proprietario dell’Hotel Gasthof zur Gams ed è stato il nostro padrone di casa per i giorni seguenti. The next day a step on the balcony in the early morning showed what every fly fisherman wants to see: Clear water! Rods and waders were already prepared and were waiting for us in the waders room.We took 3 and 4 weights and tons of dry flies. The Donnersbach is a small river with different characteristic. The water in the upper parts is fast and wild, the lower section of the stretch is slower and gentle. Fishing itself changes between short distance presentations in pocketwater to long casts for

dry fly sipping trout in the slower sections. But no matter where you fish in this wonderful water: Use dry flies!

We started on the upper part quit far up in the valley. Soon we saw the first rises but there was nothing really hatching. I started with a fly that had been working well over and over again: a grey size 16 Adams parachute. And it was delivering also this time.

We were catching small but beautiful high mountain brown and gained confidence to search for some bigger fish. A change of tactics from blind fishing promising spots to sight fishing was taken. The crystal-clear water was giving a good view into the

Il Donnersbach è un piccolo ruscello con diverse caratteristiche. Nel tratto superiore è rapido e selvaggio, mentre quello inferiore è più lento e mite. La pesca stessa cambia, dalle presentazioni a breve distanza in una pozza d’acqua ai lunghi lanci alle trote con la mosca secca nei tratti inferiori. Indipendentemente da dove si peschi, è comunque sempre meglio usare mosche secche in queste acque Abbiamo cominciato nel tratto superiore, piuttosto a monte della vallata. Abbiamo avvistato presto le prime risalite, ma non c’era nessuna schiusa. Io ho iniziato con una mosca che aveva funzionato bene diverse volte: una mosca paracadute grigia Adams di misura 16. E stava andando bene anche adesso. Abbiamo preso piccole ma bellissime trote fario d’alta montagna e poi, quando abbiamo acquistato un po’più di confidenza, siamo andati in cerca di pesci più grossi. Siamo passati quindi da una pesca alla cieca in punti promettenti a una pesca a vista.

L’acqua trasparente permetteva di vedere bene dentro le piccole pool e di scorgere i loro abitanti. Dopo aver testato alcuni spot di pesca, abbiamo avuto una buona pesca con ninfe allo sbocco di una di queste piccole pool.

Io ho preso posizione dietro a un grosso albero, dove le trote non potevano vedermi. Mio padre è sceso e io lo guidavo verso i pesci. Dopo una perfetta deriva senza alcuna reazione, abbiamo cambiato mosca passando a una piccola mosca secca marrone. Il lancio è caduto nel punto giusto, la trota stava salendo e ha preso la mosca.

Stare dietro l’albero a guardare era tanto bello quanto prendere pesci. Che bello pescare in un posto così!

Tutto ciò di cui i pescatori a mosca hanno bisogno vi viene dato al Gasthof zur Gams. 9 km di acque private, delizioso cibo locale, stanze confortevoli, ingresso dove depositare i wader… un perfetto servizio all inclusive. Persino le mosche, i tippet, i terminali e altre attrezzature per la pesca a mosca sono disponibili in Hotel.

Il sig. Rüscher non è solo il proprietario dell’albergo, ma anche il capocuoco nella cucina dell’albergo. Presta grande attenzione alla regionalità e alla sostenibilità.

Si usano gli ingredienti locali della valle per produrre il formaggio fatto in casa e i salumi per la colazione. La cena è cucinata con verdure di stagione e cervi di montagna. Il dessert consiste in deliziosi frutti e prodotti caseari della zona.

small pools and its inhabitants. After checking out some spots we found a decent fish nymphing in the outlet of one of these small pools. I took position behind a big tree where the trout couldn’t see me. My father went down and I was guiding him the way to the fish. After a perfect drift without any reaction he changed fly to a little brown dry. The following cast was on point, the trout was rising and took the fly. I think standing behind the tree and watching was even as cool as catching the fish. What a nice way of fishing in a stunning location like this!

Everything fly fishers need for a fishing trip in the Austrian mountains is given at Gasthof zur Gams. 9 km of private water, delicious local food, comfortable rooms, waders room and a perfect all around service. Even flies, tippets, leaders and other fly-fishing equipment are available in the Hotel.

Mr Rüscher is not only the owner of the hotel, he is also the chef of the Hotel Kitchen. He is paying great attention to regionality and sustainability. Local ingredients from the Valley are used to produce homemade cheese and sausages for breakfast.

Dinner is made with things like seasonal vegetables and deer from the mountains. Dessert is made of delicious fruits and milk products from the area.

Fishing season starts at the beginning of June and ends at the

end of September. Even in hot summers the temperature is lower in the high valley of thunder and the water is still cool and fresh.

Back to the sight fishing: after a half day on the upper part we switched to the lower part. I extended the leaders and we started looking for some more trout. Seeing them was not easy but then they showed up at one point. Suddenly small grey mayflies were hatching all around us and fish started rising steadily. My little grey Adams was fitting perfectly and the trout agreed on that. We caught one decent trout after the other, no giants but beautiful colored high mountain trout which gave a hell of a fight. Fast current and long winters are making them strong and resistant, so be prepared to run downstream for a 40cm trout! Our host told us about trout over 50 and even 60 cm, we didn’t catch them during our stay but we were imagining the fight they give in this territory. The hatch ended as suddenly as it appeared when the sun went down behind the mountains.

We interpreted it as a natural and fitting end of this varied and beautiful fishing day. Mr. Rüscher and the staff of the Hotel welcomed us at the counter of the hotel restaurant with a well deserved cold beer. The following dinner right after was an end of the day with style and left no wishes unfulfilled.

Vederle non è stato semplice, ma poi sono comparse in un punto e improvvisamente eravamo circondati da piccole efemere grigie e i pesci hanno cominciato a risalire. Abbiamo preso una trota dopo l’altra, non giganti, ma trote d’alta montagna dai bei colori, molto combattive. Le correnti rapide e i lunghi inverni le rendono forti e resistenti,

dunque preparatevi a correre verso valle per una trota da 40 cm! Il nostro padrone di casa ci ha parlato di trote oltre i 50 e persino 60 cm, noi non ne abbiamo prese durante il nostro soggiorno, ma abbiamo immaginato la lotta che avrebbero potuto ingaggiare! La schiusa poi è terminata rapidamente come era cominciata quando il sole è calato dietro le montagne, il finale perfetto di una meravigliosa giornata di pesca. l sig. Rüscher e lo staff dell’hotel ci aspettavano in hotel con una birra fredda assolutamente meritata seguita da una altrettanto piacevole e deliziosa cena.

Russia’s Kola Peninsula is Europe’s last great wilderness. For the salmon fisherman, the Kola’s untamed wilderness is a wonderland.

Unimpeded by man-made obstacles and pollution, the salmon of the Kola still flourish as they once did across the entire North Atlantic Seaboard. They continue to come barreling into the wild, crystalline waters of the Kola in numbers reminiscent of earlier times, before man’s relentless progress had so heavily impacted on their numbers elsewhere.

Anglers new to the Kola are often astonished by the savage way in which the Kola fish attack their flies, and the subsequent violent mayhem and spectacular acrobatic displays that they provide once hooked.

The Kola Reserve is the brainchild of a passionate Russian fly angler and conservationist and his proposition is to create a protected sanctuary for the wild Atlantic salmon of the Lumbovka and Kachkovka rivers.

The aim of the Reserve is to conserve these precious fish for generations to come, and the small number of fly anglers that will be invited to visit the Reserve can play a big part in sustaining the fisheries, and indeed the wilderness of the Kola Peninsula.

The Kola Reserve is situated in the wildest and most remote corner of the Kola, on the far Northeastern tip of the Peninsula.

Both the Lumbovka and Kachkovka have a thriving run of large Atlantic salmon. The two rivers could not be in a better place in salmon fishing terms, in what veteran salmon anglers might

La riserva di Kola è stata ideata da un appassionato pescatore russo ambientalista, che intendeva creare una riserva a protezione del salmone atlantico selvaggio dei fiumi Lumbovka e Kachkovka.

Lo scopo della riserva è conservare questi pesci preziosi per le generazioni a venire, e il numero esiguo di pescatori che saranno invitati a visitare la riserva può giocare un ruolo di primo piano nel supportare i vivai e tutta la penisola di Kola.

Il Lumbovka e il Kachkovka sono entrambi, per le loro dimensioni ridotte, abbastanza gestibili per permettere a un pescatore esperto di salmoni di coprire la superficie disponibile pescando da riva. Grazie alla loro dimensione questi fiumi si affrontano bene adottando le classiche tecniche di lancio spey, senza ricorrere a lanci ultralunghi o alla pesca dalla barca, e questo rende i due fiumi particolarmente attraenti.

Non c’è bisogno di attrezzatura ultra-pesante e una canna coda 8” lunga tredici piedi andrà bene per la maggior parte dei corsi d’acqua, permettendo al pescatore di sfruttare al meglio tutte le possibilità di pesca.

Nel 2021 la riserva di Kola è stata aperta per la prima volta alle attività economiche.

Saranno invitati a pescare nella riserva nei mesi estivi e invernali numeri limitati di pescatori a mosca che usino solo ami singoli e doppi senza ardiglione e pratichino una rigida politica di catch and release al 100%. A quei fortunati pescatori si chiederà di lasciare dietro di sé solo le impronte dei piedi, e di portarsi via null’altro che bei ricordi. Gli incassi che genereranno saranno utilizzati per mantenere e sostenere un santuario del salmone selvatico e, assieme alle guardie costantemente dispiegate lungo i fiumi, i pescatori e le loro guide fungeranno essi stessi da guardiani della riserva, riportando e gestendo qualsiasi incursione che dovessero notare da parte di bracconieri illegali.

I pescatori raggiungeranno le pool a piedi e in elicottero e, dopo lunghe ed emozionanti giornate trascorse sui corsi d’acqua, potranno rilassarsi nel confortevole e lussuoso lodge in legno, costruito a tale scopo in Finlandia, vicino alle sponde della Lumbovka Home Pool.

Arredato benissimo, il lodge offrirà eleganti stanze private con grandi letti comodi, docce in camera ed eccellenti attrezzature per l’asciugatura.

Dopo gli aperitivi, i pescatori si prepareranno all’attività sportiva del giorno seguente rinfrancandosi con deliziosi pasti consumati nell’ampio e confortevole salone, a base di ingredienti locali come le bistecche di renna della tundra, e altre prelibatezze provenienti da luoghi più distanti.Tutto sarà preparato dalle mani esperte di Kristina Chernyakovskaya, l’abilissima cuoca in capo della riserva.

In 2021, the Kola Reserve will open for business for the first time.

Limited numbers of fly-fishermen, using only barbless single and double hooks and practicing a strict 100% catch and release policy, will be invited to fish the Reserve throughout the summer and autumn months. Those lucky anglers will be required to leave only footprints, and take only memories.

The revenue that they generate will be used to maintain and sustain a sanctuary for the wild salmon, and along with permanently deployed river guards, the anglers and their guides will act as guardians for the Reserve, ensuring that any incursion by illegal poachers is reported and dealt with.

Anglers will be ferried to the pools on foot and by helicopter, and after long and exciting days on the water, will be able to unwind in the luxurious and comfortable, timber lodge, purpose-built in Finland and situated close to the banks of the Lumbovka Home Pool.

Beautifully appointed, the lodge will offer elegantly furnished private rooms, featuring big, comfortable beds, ensuite showers and excellent drying facilities.

After aperitifs, the anglers will be well-fortified for the next day’s sport in the large, comfortable dining room, with delicious meals featuring locally sourced ingredients like reindeer steaks from the tundra, spider crab from the arctic ocean and other delicacies from further afield. These will be expertly prepared by Kristina Chernyakovskaya, the Reserve’s wonderfully talented head chef.

The summer fishing should be dominated by the big fresh fish that run the river from early June until late July.

The Lumbovka features wonderful fly water, with an excellent number of holding pools, including the stunningly beautiful Horseshoe Pool, the prolific Coliseum, and the long, boulder-studded tail-out of the Homepool, a short walk downstream of the camp. The glassy tail-outs are a feature of the Lumbovka, and they offer perfect water in which to fish riffle-hitched sunray shadow flies, perhaps the most exciting way to catch Atlantic salmon. Seeing these ferocious salmon burst through the surface to attack a hitched fly is a very special experience, and one of the absolute highlights of fishing the Kola Reserve. In one short session, one of the exploratory anglers caught five handsome salmon between twelve and twenty pounds using a full floating line and a large “Sunray shadow” fly, and described the day as one of the most exciting of his fly-fishing life A few miles to the Southeast, the beguiling Kachkovka weaves across the tundra before slicing through a deep but accessible canyon. It then tumbles into a series of beautiful pools before cascading into the wild waters of the Barents Sea. The Kachkovka is smaller and wilder than the Lumbovka. As well as prolific numbers of handsome salmon in the summer months, it offers an additional and very special fishery As summer fades, the endless carpet of sprawling tundra turns to a dazzling golden hue. In the low autumn sunshine, it is breathtakingly beautiful. Periodically, as the days shorten, this bewitching landscape lights up under the magic of the ‘aurora borealis’.

It is then that the fabled Osenkas of the Kola start to run the rivers, and while it is early days to establish exactly what we can expect, the exploratory team established that both the Kachkovka and the Lumbovka see a number of these special

Il Lumbovka ha acque straordinariamente adatte alla pesca a mosca, con un gran numero di pool di proprietà, comprendenti l’incantevole Horseshoe Pool, il prolifico Coliseum e la lunga coda ciottolosa della Homepool, raggiungibile dall’accampamento con un breve tragitto a piedi verso valle. Le piane d’acqua cristallina sono una caratteristica tipica del Lumbovka e offrono condizioni perfette in cui pescare con mosche rifflehitch sunray shadow, che sono forse il modo più entusiasmante per prendere salmoni atlantici. Ogni tanto, quando i giorni si accorciano, questo paesaggio incantevole si illumina sotto la magia dell’‘aurora boreale’. È allora che i mitici osenka del Kola cominciano a risalire i fiumi, e anche se è presto per stabilire esattamente cosa possiamo aspettarci, il team esplorativo ha constatato che sia il Kachkovka che il Lumbovka vedono ogni anno tornare un numero considerevole di questi pesci.

Gli osenka sono un ceppo raro di salmo salar. Di colore argento cromato e stracolmi di grasso, questi pesci eroici fanno irruzione nel fiume un anno e più prima di deporre le uova nell’autunno seguente. Rimangono poi un secondo inverno sotto il ghiaccio prima di tornare al mare e stanno dunque nel fiume per ben venti

Alcune miglia a sud-est, l’incantevole Kachkovka serpeggia in mezzo alla tundra prima di attraversare un profondo, ma accessibile canyon, dopodiché si tuffa in una serie di bellissime pool e si getta infine nelle acque selvagge del Mare di Barents. Il Kachkovka è più piccolo e più selvaggio del Lumbovka.

Quando l’estate volge al termine, lo sconfinato tappeto della tundra prende una luminosissima colorazione dorata. Al sole basso dell’autunno, è di una tale bellezza che toglie il respiro.

Guadando una bella pool ciottolosa sul fondo del canyon, uno dei pescatori in esplorazione riuscì a tirare fuori dal Kachkovka ben sei combattivi osenka in risalita in soli novanta minuti di pesca, a fine settembre nel 2019. Su questo pianeta ci sono pochi fiumi che possano offrire una pesca sportiva al salmone atlantico così frenetica e coinvolgente.

Osenkas are a rare strain of salmo salar. Chrome silver and chock-full of fat, these heroic fish come charging into the river a full year before spawning the following autumn. They then remain a second winter under the ice before returning to the sea, and are thus in the river for a remarkable twenty months without feeding. On entering the river, the Osenkas are obliged to carry enough muscle and body-fat to see them through not one but two of the Kola’s savage winters, and it makes these fish, pound-for-pound, as powerful as any Atlantic salmon that swims. .

Despite the relatively small size of the Kachkovka, it appears to have an abundant run of these wonderful fish. Wading in a beautiful, boulder-studded pool at the bottom of the canyon, one of the exploratory anglers managed to prize six hardfighting autumn-run osenkas out of the Kachkovka in just ninety

minutes fishing in late September, 2019. There are few rivers on the planet that can offer such hectic and exhilarating sport for Atlantic salmon.

IL COLLEZIONISMO DELLE ANTICHE ATTREZZATURE DA PESCA di Riccardo di Stabile

Sono anni che viaggio per case d’aste, mercatini e fiere specializzate alla ricerca di pezzi da inserire nella mia collezione di antiche attrezzature da pesca, e non ho ancora capito perché lo faccio. All’inizio pensavo che la soddisfazione arrivasse nel completare una serie di mulinelli, o avere tutta la produzione di tutti i pezzi costruiti da un certo artigiano in quel determinato periodo, oppure avere in una bacheca tutti i diversi modelli di mosche di un bravo costruttore. Alla fine le bacheche si sono riempite di mulinelli, così come le rastrelliere di canne, ma grandi soddisfazioni non ne sono arrivate e la ricerca continua.

Non potrebbe essere diversamente. Faccenda strana quella del collezionismo, un pezzo ha un valore incredibile sempre prima di comprarlo, ma appena lo metti in una vetrina perde di valore e interesse, sia per me che per gli altri che si sono buttati alla ricerca del pezzo rarissimo. Lo stesso vale per i libri antichi.

In tutti questi anni ho avuto per le mani probabilmente più di 2000 canne antiche in bambù, per non parlare di mulinelli e oggetti vari, a nessuno dei quali mi sono purtroppo affezionato.

Alcune canne le ho usate per pescare, ma dopo un paio di uscite la voglia di trovarne una simile ma di qualche anno prima aumentava, e via che si partiva daccapo con le ricerche. Negli anni ho conosciuto collezionisti incredibili e sofferenti per non

riuscire mai a colmare il vuoto nelle bacheche, anche perché prima di riempirle di solito ne venivano raddoppiati gli spazi.

Ricordo ancora un anziano collezionista che facendomi visita mi confidò che collezionava solamente mulinelli italiani con meccanismi elicoidali e che gli ultimi li aveva trovati negli Stati Uniti, sborsando cifre iperboliche. Ora la collezione non aveva sbocchi e stava pensando di svendere tutto al primo offerente.

Con tristezza mi disse che aveva provato a raccogliere altri tipi di mulinelli ma che non gli davano le stesse sensazioni.

Personalmente credo che la grande soddisfazione del collezionista giunga quando ci si confronta con altri “ malati” della stessa passione. E’ qui che esce la vera competenza, le serate passate a studiare i vecchi cataloghi e ad aprire le casse dei mulinelli per sapere esattamente come sono all’interno.

Il confronto diventa una guerra a colpi di conoscenza ed esperienze (‘esperienze’ si può benissimo tradurre con ‘fregature passate prese da altri collezionisti più competenti’) e ci si batte fino all’esaurimento per il diametro di una corona, una legatura di una canna e si può perdere un amico per il colore di un’ agata di un passante di una canna.

I have been travelling for years in search of pieces to add to my collection of old fishing equipment, and have visited auction houses, local markets and sectorial trade fairs. However, I still do not know why I have done so. At the beginning, I thought I would feel satisfied when completing a series of reels, or getting the whole production of pieces built by a certain artisan in a particular period, or putting into a showcase all the different patterns of flies produced by a good manufacturer. At last my cases were full of reels, and the racks full of rods, but since I was not satisfied enough, my research went on. It could not be otherwise. Collecting is an odd activity: a piece has incredible value before you buy it, but as soon as you put it into a cabinet, it loses value and interest, both for you and others who have launched themselves in the pursuit of a very rare piece. The same goes for old books. In all these years I have probably had more than 2,000 old bamboo rods in my hands, to say nothing of reels and various items, but unfortunately I have become attached to none of them. I used some rods for fishing, but the couple of trips that followed increased my desire to find something similar and yet a few years older. So I started again with my search. Over the years, I got to know crazy collectors, who suffered because they could never fill the vacuum in their showcases, also because they had doubled the spaces before they could fill them.

I still remember an old collector who confided in me during a visit, that he collected only Italian reels with helical mechanisms and had bought the last ones in the United States at exaggerated prices. Now his collection had no way out and he was thinking of selling everything short. With sorrow, he told me that he had tried to collect other sorts of reels, but his feelings were not the same. Personally, I think that a collector is really happy only when he comes in touch with other “insane” collectors. You get in touch with real competence in those evenings spent studying old catalogues and opening the reel cases to discover how they are made inside. The discussion becomes a war in which weapons are knowledge and experiences (“experiences” can be easily

custodisce il proprio tesoro e l’essenziale è arrivare prima di qualcun altro. Recentemente una delle più grandi collezioni europee di mulinelli è stata venduta dal figlio del collezionista e la liquidazione è stata velocissima, probabilmente al capezzale del famoso collezionista sono arrivati prima i colleghi avvoltoi dei famigliari. Forse è anche per questo che ho perso interesse, da quando non si ricerca più il pezzo per la bellezza dell’oggetto ma solo per la possibilità di rivenderlo il prima possibile, dove la scarsa conoscenza della storia della pesca e delle aziende che hanno costruito questi oggetti è stata sopraffatta da qualche soldo in più buttato sul mercato. Ricordo un bellissimo mercato d’antiquariato in Inghilterra organizzato 3 volte all’anno, in cui incontravi collezionisti, antiquari professionisti, procacciatori di

case e tanti truffatori. La fiera apriva alle 9 e tutti si precipitavano sui pochi che avevano attrezzature da pesca. Si aveva il tempo per comprare qualche canna solamente tastandola ma senza estrarla dalla custodia. Aprendola si sarebbe perso troppo tempo. In effetti anche senza estrarla molto di quella canna veniva rivelato: le legature da un passante all’altro aiutano nella datazione, il primo e l’ultimo passante in base alla forma indicano il costruttore, per non parlare delle ghiere e dell‘impugnatura. La vera sorpresa però la si aveva al rientro alla sera, molte di quelle canne infatti spesso erano da buttare perchè restaurate male o contraffatte.

Ma era lì che si viveva il vero fascino del collezionismo, nella ricerca e nello studio prima della battaglia.

Friendships between collectors do not last long, also because collecting is indeed something for lonely people, as everyone keeps his own treasure and what is important is to arrive before someone else does. One of the biggest European collections of reels was recently sold by the collector’s son and the sale was very quick. The speculation was that colleagues probably arrived at the famous collector’s bedside before his family did.

This is perhaps the reason why I lost my interest in collecting since people do not look for the beauty of the object any more, but just for the chance to resell it as soon as possible. The knowledge of the history of fishing and of the companies that built these objects has thus been surpassed by some more money thrown on the market. I remember a beautiful antique market organized three times a year in England, where you could meet collectors, professional antique dealers, procurers of houses and a lot of swindlers. The fair opened at 9 and all the people rushed to those selling fishing equipment. You had just the time to buy a few rods after only touching it without pulling it out of its case. If you had opened it, you would have lost too much time. Actually, even without pulling it out, much of that rod was disclosed: the tying from one belt loop to the next helps you in dating since the first and last belt loops indicate the manufacturer based on their form, to say nothing of ferrules and handles. However, the true surprise arrived when you got home in the evening, as many of those rods were already trashed because they were badly restored or faked. Yet, that was the genuine fascination of collecting, in the moment of research and study before the battle.

Il torrente Gesso, il progetto Europeo Alcotra, la gestione del progetto e le mille battaglie per realizzarlo > Caro Simone, innanzitutto parlaci di te, appassionato alla pesca a mosca?

Sono nato con la canna in mano sulle rive del “Fiume Azzurro”: mio padre, che oltre ad essere pescatore era anche cacciatore, aveva due “Barcè” (tipico natante usato per navigare le acque fluviali del Ticino), uno lo teneva a Bereguardo e un altro più a valle a Torre d’Isola.

E’ a quel periodo che risalgono i miei primi ricordi di temoli, marmorate, persici, lucci....e prima ancora di alborelle, oggi “merce” rara, pescate con la canna fissa e il cagnotto.

Ma è in Val Sesia che ho iniziato a pescare a mosca: ho dei ricordi di temoli del Sesia, i “negroni”, che se ci penso mi viene ancora la pelle d’oca.... > Parlaci di questo splendido torrente che, oltre alle sue acque cristalline, è famoso per le Trote della Regina.

Son arrivato in Alta Valle Gesso nel ’98 quando quella che oggi è mia moglie mi ha portato in vacanza: un’ enormità di torrenti, tutti in concessione a privati dove pescare era praticamente impossibile. In quasi 25 anni ho esplorato tutte le acque possibili e immaginabili del posto contestualmente alla creazione del concept IL GESSO DELLA REGINA, realizzato con un gruppo di amici capitanati dal Presidente Enrico Gallina con diverse tipologie di gestione sui tratti in concessione (i “Tratti di

Valorizzazione Ittica” delle quote montane e le gestioni dei tratti di fondovalle).

L’Alta Valle Gesso è anche uno dei regni della “Trota della Regina” (la trota mediterranea autoctona locale), che oggi rappresenta un mito in quanto è difficile poterne certificare l’esclusiva presenza poiché è praticamene impossibile trovare un torrente che non sia stato ripopolato con materiale non adeguato.

E’ un discorso complesso, posso però dire che in certi luoghi la popolazione selvatica di trote è talmente ben strutturata che non è necessario nessun tipo di ripopolamento perché la corretta gestione è in grado di dare negli anni un ottimo livello di catture. > Ora passiamo al progetto Interreg Alcotra, di cui sei il fautore.

Di che cosa si tratta?

Si tratta di un progetto dal titolo “PESCATOUR 1694 Valorizzazione ambientale e turistica di ambienti acquatici alpini attraverso attività di pesca sportiva sostenibile dei Comune di Valdieri (Italia) e del Comune di Tenda (Francia)” in origine con il terzo partner francese della “FAMPPMA” (Fèderation des AlpesMarittimes pour la pèche et la protection du milieu acquatique) e successivamente sostituito dal partner italiano della “FIPSAS” (Federazione Italiana Pesca Sportiva e Attività Subacquee).

Alla conferenza di proclamazione dei vincitori del bando del programma Interreg ALCOTRA 2014/2020 dell’Asse III “Attrattività del territorio - Conservazione ambientale e valorizzazione delle risorse naturali e culturali anche mediante lo sviluppo del turismo sostenibile e dell’economia verde” Obiettivo Specifico 1 - Incrementare il turismo sostenibile

The Gesso Stream, the European Alcotra Project, the management of the project, and the thousand battles to fulfil it > Hi Simone, let’s talk about you. When did you get into fly fishing?

I was born with a rod in my hand, on the banks of the “Blue River”: my father, who was both an angler and a hunter, had two “Barcè” (a typical boat used to sail on the river waters of Ticino), one kept in Bereguardo and another downstream in Torre d’Isola.

My first recollections of grayling, marbled trout, perch, and pike date back to that period....and even before that time.

I began to fly fish in Val Sesia: I have good memories of the grayling from Sesia, the “dark fellows” which still give me goose bumps whenever I think about them.... > Tell us about this wonderful stream, which is famous for the Queen’s Trout, besides its crystal clear water.

It was in 1998 when my future wife took me for a holiday to the high Gesso valley: a huge vastness of streams, all of which were under a concession with private people, so that fishing was practically impossible. In almost 25 years I have explored all possible and imaginable local waters and at the same time I have created the concept IL GESSO DELLA REGINA (THE QUEEN’S CHALK). I formed this with a group of friends headed by the President, Enrico Gallina, and with various types of management on the stretches under concession (the “Stretches of Fish Promotion” upstream and the management of the stretches downstream).

The high Gesso valley is also one of the kingdoms of the “Queen’s Trout” (the Mediterranean autochthonous local trout), which represents a myth now, as you can hardly certify its exclusive presence because it is practically impossible to find a stream which has not been repopulated with unsuitable materials.

It is a complex subject, but I can say that in some places, the wild population is so well structured that it does not need any restocking. This is because correct management can give a good level of catches in the course of years. > Let’s move now to the interregional Alcotra Project that you created. What is it about?

The project is entitled “PESCATOUR 1694 – Environmental and tourist promotion of alpine water environments through sustainable sport fishing activities of the municipalities of Valdieri (Italy) and Tenda (France).” This was originally with the third French partner, “FAMPPMA” (Fédération des AlpesMarittimes pour la pèche et la protection du milieu aquatique), which was subsequently replaced by the Italian partner, “FIPSAS” (Federazione Italiana Pesca Sportiva e Attività Subacquee).

A conference was held in Chamonix on 6th October 2016 for the proclamation of the winners of the call relating to the interregional program ALCOTRA 2014/2020 of the Axis III “Attractiveness of the area – Environmental preservation and promotion of natural and cultural resources, also through the development of sustainable tourism and green economy” Specific objective 1 – Increase sustainable

Per la prima volta non è stato premiato il solito progetto sullo sky, sulle bici o sul trekking ma un progetto sulla pesca escursionistica: ciò fa ben sperare tutti noi appassionati.

Nello specifico si tratta di un corposo dossier di quasi duecento voci nell’ambito delle infrastrutture in alveo (deframmentazioni fluviali sulle traverse di derivazione con la realizzazione dei passaggi pesci, rigenerazioni fluviali e accessi al torrente), dell’ittiologia (realizzazione di un incubatorio di valle più attività ittiogeniche di valorizzazione di pesci endemici e selvatici) e di attività di educazione ambientale (corsi per giovani, corsi guide di pesca) e di comunicazione per la quale si sta sviluppando un’ intensa attività promozionale e divulgativa che ha previsto la realizzazione di eventi specifici sui due territori di riferimento, l’accoglienza dei numerosi stakeholder (turisti pescatori escursionisti, testimonial e giornalisti), la partecipazione ad eventi nazionali ed internazionali, il tutto legato alla definizione di un progetto di comunicazione dedicato. > Credo che qualche parola su Renato Grasso, comune amico e tuo grande sostenitore, sia dovuta.

Renato ci ha lasciato prematuramente il 7 ottobre 2019 nel bel mezzo del progetto stesso: è stato Art Director di progetto, Fondatore e Honorary Member del progetto e riserva di pesca di Valdieri IL GESSO DELLA REGINA e mio compagno di pesca per tantissimi anni.

Il primo numero del nostro magazine (MARITIM ALPS WATERS - "a region to discover") sarà anche una sorta di raccolta monografica dei suoi lavori grafici sulla pesca in ricordo di un grande uomo, un grande grafico, un grande pescatore... un caro Amico! > Ormai sono passati alcuni anni dall’inizio dei lavori, credi ci sia speranza di vederne il risultato nel modo in cui lo avevi concepito?

Il progetto sarà diverso da come era stato concepito per tutte le difficoltà incontrate durante il percorso, resta il fatto che l’esperienza fatta con Interreg mi dà la carica per poterne pensare altri e migliori.

Mentre scrivo le risposte a questa intervista l’Alta valle Gesso e l’Alta Valle Roya sono state oggetto di una catastrofica alluvione (la notte del 2/3 ottobre ha avuto il picco dei livelli di piena in concomitanza con piogge di 600 ml in 24 ore): il livello del danno è già abbastanza evidente (in particolare a Tenda) e per quanto riguarda le acque e la fauna ittica lo capiremo meglio durante la prossima stagione. > E se tu potessi tornare indietro?

Se potessi tornare indietro…alla fine farei le stesse cose, ma con più serenità. > Progetti futuri?

Tanti e ambiziosi, ovviamente tutti sulla pesca e la valorizzazione degli ambienti acquatici Grazie di tutto Simone, fa sempre piacere parlare con persone che dalle parole passano ai fatti.

For the first time they did not award, as usual, a project on skiing, biking, hiking or trekking, but a project on fishing tourism: this boded well for all of us enthusiasts.

In particular, it was a large dossier including almost 200 entries in the field of infrastructures on the riverbed (river defrags on the diversion dams, as well as creation of passages for fish, river regenerations and accesses to the stream), ichthyology (creation of a valley incubator and ichthyogenic activities for the promotion of endemic and wild fish) and activities in environmental education (courses for young people and those for fishing guides) and communication, which are being made known and promoted through specific events in both areas in question, the welcome of the many stakeholders (hiking and fishing tourists, testimonials and journalists), and the participation in national and international events. All of this is connected with the definition of a dedicated communication project.

> I think we must say a few words about Renato Grasso, a common friend and your great supporter.

If I could go back in time… I would do the same, but with more serenity.

Renato died prematurely on 7 October 2019 in the middle of the project: he had been Art Director of the project, Founder and Honorary Member of the project and fishing reserve IL GESSO DELLA REGINA (THE QUEEN’S CHALK) based in Valdieri as well as my fishing mate for several years.

> Do you have any future projects?

> Some years have already passed since the start of work, do you think we can hope to see the result as you conceived it?

The project will be different from the way it was conceived, due to all difficulties we have come across, but the fact remains that the experience with this interregional project encourages me to think of other and better ones.

While I was writing down the answers for this interview, the high Gesso valley and the high Roya valley were subject to catastrophic flooding (during the night between 2 and 3 October, the river reached peak flood levels in conjunction with 600 ml of rain in 24 hours): the level of the damage is already rather evident (particularly in Tenda) and, as for waters and fish fauna, we will be able to estimate it better during the next season. > And if you could go back in time?

I have many, and all of them ambitious, on fishing and the promotion of aquatic environments.

Mi sono recato a Farquhar Atoll, Seychelles, nel marzo del 2019 con Hosted Trip di Sandro Mediani, CATCH FISHING HEROES: eravamo 4 Italiani, anche se uno residente in Svizzera, e proprio lui, Alessandro, ha fatto il botto catturando il più grande GT della settimana. Farquhar Atoll e il vicino Providence Atoll sono considerati il non plus ultra per pescare a mosca questi magnifici predatori degli Oceani Indiano e Pacifico. Non ci sono però solo GT, ma è possibile pescare: Blue Fin Trevally, Yellow Trevally, Cernie Africane, Bumphead Parrot Fish, Napoleon Wrasse,

Bonefish, Permit, Trigger Fish, Milk Fish, enormi Aguglie, Bohar Snapper, Barracuda, una miriade di pesci colorati di Barriera Corallina, tutti con Floating Fly Line, ed è inoltre possibile fare il BLUE WATER. Da parte mia non me la sono sentita di pescare i GT, ma sono stato premiato lo stesso con la cattura di un grande Batfish, il primo mai pescato con il Fly Fishing in Farquhar Atoll. Li ho studiati un poco i Batfish: vivono in gruppi e perlustrano il Coral Reef anche a grandi profondità, in testa al gruppo si trovano i più grossi, io li ho intercettati su una bassa

Flat di Turtle Grass, sono molto forti e il mio ha sfilato decine di metri di backing. Durante la settimana tutti hanno catturato di tutto, persino un Indopacific Permit, pesce raro a Farquhar.

In questo remoto atollo equatoriale si sente proprio il respiro dell’ Oceano, numerose sono le tartarughe marine, onnipresenti gli squali di tutte le taglie, per lo più Black Tip Shark oppure i più rari Tiger Shark. Le guide di FLYCASTAWAY, quasi tutte anglosassoni ma alcuni anche nativi delle Seychelles, sono state ottime, ho visto grandi professionisti, ma i GT sono bestie molto

forti e qualcuno, dopo la cattura, si è liberato da solo prima della foto di rito. Ho visto l’Africa magnifica e terribile, con gli uccelli marini aggressivi che le guide scacciavano quando si avvicinavano troppo alle nostre barche o eravamo nelle Flats, correnti e maree indicibili che hanno influenzato la pesca dei GT. Il servizio logistico di FLYCASTAWAY nel Lodge e per il pranzo al sacco si è rivelato di primordine; è stato per me un viaggio indimenticabile e rivelatore della ricchezza di una natura ancora intatta.

I visited Farquhar Atoll, Seychelles, in March 2019 with Sandro Mediani’s Hosted Trip for CATCH FISHING HEROES: we were 4 Italians, though one of us, Alessandro, lives in Switzerland.

He was the one who succeeded in catching the biggest GT of the week. Farquhar Atoll and the nearby Providence Atoll are considered the best for fly fishing these majestic predators of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. However, you can fish not only GT, but also Blue Fin Trevally, Yellow Trevally, African Grouper, Bumphead Parrot Fish, Napoleon Wrasse, Bonefish,

Permit, Trigger Fish, Milk Fish, huge billfish, Bohar Snapper, and Barracuda. There are a lot of colourful fish in the barrier reef, to be fished with a Floating Fly Line, and you can also do BLUE WATER fishing. As for me, I did not dare to fish GT, but was rewarded all the same with the catch of a big Batfish, the first ever fished on a fly in the Farquhar Atoll. I had studied the Batfish a little bit: they live in groups and with the bigger fish first, patrol even the depths of the Coral Reef. I spotted them in a shallow Flat of Turtle Grass. They were very strong and mine

pulled back by a distance of tens of meters. During the week everybody caught everything, even an Indo-Pacific Permit, which is a rare fish in Farquhar. In this remote equatorial atoll you feel the breath of the Ocean. There are several sea turtles, and sharks of all sizes everywhere, especially the Black Tip Shark, or the rarer Tiger Shark. FLYCASTAWAY’s guides were excellent. Almost all of them were Anglo-Saxons and some were born in the Seychelles. The fishing professionals I met were great, but GT are very strong beasts and some of them

managed to get free after being caught and before our routine photos were taken. I saw the wonderful and terrible Africa, with aggressive sea birds that our guides shooed away when they came too near our boats. In the Flats, incredible currents and tides influenced our fishing for GT. FLYCASTAWAY’s logistic service was first class in the Lodge and for our packed lunches. It was an unforgettable travel that revealed to me the richness of still uncontaminated nature.
