elcome to HACU’s 27th Annual National Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education. Thank you for joining us at this very important advocacy event. The pre-conference workshops are designed to provide resources and share best practices on grant procurement opportunities available for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

The two-day virtual Capitol Forum will feature sessions with distinguished speakers and presenters on pressing issues affecting HSIs. An overview of HACU’s Legislative Agenda will help us prepare for visits with members of the 117th Congress and their staff.

The more than 500 HSIs remain severely underfunded even though they educate over 5 million students, mostly low-income and underserved. Your advocacy efforts are essential to achieve greater federal investments in HSIs and Congressional support in five priority areas: equitable funding for HSIs, the passage of the HERE Act, increasing authorization levels for Title V - Part A and Title V - Part B, establishing a capital financing program for HSI infrastructure upgrades, and increasing the Pell Grant by doubling the award amount and extending eligibility for DACA eligible and temporary protected status students. Together, we can elevate the voices of our HSIs and urge legislators to increase federal funding support for them and their students.

Please share HACU’s higher education priorities and the information and resources from this forum with your campus communities and encourage them to engage members of Congress and enlist others in continued advocacy in support of our priorities and higher education.

The Annual National Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education provides a unique opportunity for higher education representatives, students, and advocates like you to join forces with policymakers, key federal agency leaders, allied organizations, corporate, community and philanthropic representatives in support of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

Your engagement will aid HACU in making the case for equitable federal funding support needed for HSIs. The virtual format for the Capitol Forum offers us another way to continue the momentum needed to engage in HACU’s Legislative Agenda and advocacy efforts to create positive change for generations of students at our institutions across the nation. ABOUT HACU For more than 35 years, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has advocated on behalf of Hispanic higher education in the U.S. and around the world. The mission of the Association is to Champion Hispanic success in higher education.

HACU fulfills its mission by: promoting the development of member colleges and universities; improving access to and the quality of postsecondary educational opportunities for Hispanic students; and meeting the needs of business, industry and government through the development and sharing of resources, information and expertise.

HACU is the only organization that represents existing and emerging Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). HSIs today represent 18% of all institutions of higher education and enroll 66 percent of Hispanic undergraduates. HACU serves its membership through advocacy, conferences, partnerships and educational programs, and offers scholarships and internship opportunities for students.

White House Honors UC Santa Cruz Astronomer Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring represent the highest honors bestowed upon mentors who work to expand STEM talent.

Ramirez-Ruiz, who holds UCSC’s Vera Rubin Presidential Chair for Diversity in Astronomy, has been building STEM training research programs at UC Santa Cruz for over 14 years. In addition to his record of success as a research

adviser, the mentoring program he created, called Lamat (“star” in Mayan), has increased the number of historically marginalized students who earn Ph.D.s in astrophysics. Ramirez-Ruiz and the Lamat program have together trained half of all historically marginalized students receiving astronomy Ph.D.s in the United States in the past five years.

Precision medicine is health care that is based on you as an individual. It takes into account factors like where you live, what you do, and your family health history. Precision medicine’s goal is to be able to tell people the best ways to stay healthy.

What is the All of Us Research Program?

The All of Us Research Program is a large research program from the National Institutes of Health.

The goal is to help researchers understand more about why people get sick or stay healthy.

We hope that more than one million people will join the All of Us Research Program.

People who join will share information about their health, habits, and what it’s like where they live. By looking for patterns in this information, researchers may learn more about what affects people’s health.

The All of Us Research Program will last for 10 years or more. This will allow researchers to study health over time. If you decide to join the All of Us Research Program, you will be contributing to an effort to improve the health of generations to come. You also may learn about your own health.
