Local History Award for Sue Andrews

The British Association for Local History has accorded an award for 2020 to Sue Andrews of Bildeston for her 5000 word essay entitled ‘Why didn’t the parish of Hadleigh join Cosford Incorporation in 1779?’ Accompanied by a meal and travel expenses, the award presentation is usually made in June at the Association’s Annual Conference held in London. However this year, a certificate was sent in the post. In her essay, Sue looks at the complexities involved in joining together seventeen parishes to form Cosford Incorporation and seeks to explain why Hadleigh refused to participate in this local scheme to support the poor, which involved erecting one large workhouse at Semer for all paupers in the newly-formed administrative district. She shows how Hadleigh was able to remain independent as funds came from 39 privately-funded charities, which included providing 38 almshouses and a pest house, and publicly-funded poor rates that maintained the parish workhouse. In addition, both sources of income supported the poor in their own homes. Sue has always been very keen on local history and formerly gave talks, ran adult-education classes and for sixteen years was honorary joint-archivist at Hadleigh Archive. However, she realised that as her mobility was diminishing, she would not be able to continue so, in 2010 launched The Hadleigh Historian. The magazine is about to celebrate its tenth anniversary with an additional issue for which Sue is asking nine friends to join with her to show the activities of researching, transcribing, translating, cataloguing, curating, recording, writing, publishing and presenting Hadleigh’s rich history. As well as information on how to become involved, articles include the story of Hadleigh’s last station master; playtime for pupils at Station Road Council School; Hadleigh Exiles on the continent in the 1550’; churchwardens of St Mary’s; and Sue’s award-winning piece. Although the current corona-virus pandemic has currently put everything on hold, it is hoped that this special-issue magazine entitled Bringing the past to life will encourage even moor people to participate when study groups and societies start their meetings and activities again and archives re-open for research.

Otters (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) This school year has started with a bang! A huge crash, bang landing in the playground when an alien space ship took a wrong turn! Our space topic has been a great way to launch the year. We have welcomed new children into the class and everyone is working hard and enjoying being back together. We have really enjoyed researching and reading books about space and exploring our classroom. Badgers (Year 3 and 4) What busy Badgers we have been so far this half term! Along with the rest of the school, we launched our Space topic discovering a Rocket Crash Site on our playground. This stimulated lots of animated discussions creating some fantastic independent writing. We did not stay on Earth for long as we blasted-off into space to visit our new favourite book character, Moon Man. Our brief visit ended as we hitched a ride with him as he clung onto the tail of a passing comet. Taking advantage of the warm weather, we held our annual sports and mindfulness week, all enjoying a wide variety of sports and activities thanks to some wonderful sports providers. Many exciting opportunities, beginning with a challenging climbing wall on the Glebe on a wonderful sunny day and ending with a perfect cool down on Friday, some relaxing and calming yoga. Recently, our taste buds have also been tantalised with an analysis of a variety of ingredients. The children chose the products they enjoyed the most to create their own personalised Moon Rock Cakes - they were Out of this World! Owls (Year 5 and 6) Owls have launched into this term with enthusiasm. Writing with flair about a crash site that was discovered on school property and how it might have got there… SPACE – this term’s whole-school topic - has also linked neatly with our Science as we have orbited the Sun, spun on our axis as the Earth and experimented our way through the phases of the Moon. We come down to earth with a bang into our Geography that has shown Owls taking on the role of ‘presenters’ as they teach each other about their ‘biome’ research before replicating volcanoes in 3D form! Their favourite and ongoing part of their learning has been apparent through their love of our text, Cosmic, by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. Liam Digby’s journey as a ‘pretend dad’ has taken him to China to be the first dad into Space with a group of very different and excitable children. Owls have roleplayed confidently; prepared poems full of figurative language; walked down conscience alley and visualised settings through art with creative prowess. All this learning wrapped around an incredibly action-packed sports week too! Local couple continue unique vision for rural Suffolk Art Gallery Brett Gallery is situated in the pretty Suffolk village of Monks Eleigh. It is part of Bridge Farm Barns, a collection of several unique and independent retail businesses offering the customer an unparalleled selection of distinctive products and good service. The outlets include a tea room, gift shop, Sarah’s Attic vintage collectables, OliVen quilting and felting as well as a garden nursery, the Outrageous Cake Company and Lavenham Falconry. It all began life as the family concern of ‘Corncraft’ in 1970. One of the founders, Win Gage, opened Brett Gallery in 2015 with the aim of promoting the work of locally based artists and crafts people. There are some 35 regular East Anglian Exhibitors displaying a range of work covering original fine art and prints, pottery, jewellery, glass, photography, metal art and wood. Win had decided to retire at the end of March 2020 and this now well-established centre was then to have been taken on by husband and wife team, Suzanne Perry and John Reading who intend to continue to source works that fit into this bracket. Along came the pandemic when the Gallery had to close. Following the deferral of the sale of the Gallery, its gradual re-opening alongside Corncraft Tea Room, proved to be more successful quicker than anticipated and it is now open again building on Win's vision, this time with the extended opening hours of Tuesdays to Sundays, 10.30 to 16.30. From October, John and Sue took over the reigns, with a busy first week which coincided with the neighbouring monthly Saturday Vintage market. These extended hours are accompanied by a refresh of exhibits as well as the introduction of some new artists. Win will continue to assist for one day a week and Mary, a founding member of staff, has asked to stay with the Gallery, working two days each week. In early 2021, the new owners intend to expand the Exhibition area. Stour Valley U3A News Knocked back by Covid we are now rebuilding as quickly as is safely possible. The majority of our activity groups, including walking, ten pin bowling, fitness, canoeing and kayaking, are back up and running. Other groups, from philosophy, to book club and languages, continue to operate using Zoom. Meanwhile, our coffee mornings have started again at the Lambe School in East Bergholt on Fridays each month and our gardening group has a number of visits planned, including a week away to Harrogate. French’s Care Haven Hello to all new readers and those who have been following our ups, downs, relocations and progress over the years. I would like to let you hear from some of our volunteers, over the next few editions. Some of our helpers work full time and look at days up at the farm as a refreshing break, Like Sharon Bell pictured here along with her quote and we have other volunteers who have retired and are enjoying being part of our team and there are younger people we help that struggle with their mental health. French’s give meaningful work, teach new skills in animal husbandry and maintenance, help people to relax, enjoy and see a brighter side to life, while improving their physical and mental wellbeing along the way. As a qualified NLP coach on the human side, I am always there to listen and work with anyone who needs someone to help them through their difficult times. Our base is set in picturesque countryside and along with all our beautiful animals on the farm, it is an ideal setting. Hi I’m Sharon and I volunteer on a Saturday at French’s Care Haven.The people that know me have heard for many years saying “my goal is to have some donkeys in my back garden that would be part of my family”. As I’m growing older this goal wasn’t looking promising. My life changed last year and I moved back to Suffolk. I’m a great believer in fate and looking through the Hadleigh magazine a picture of a donkey caught my eye. I read on and realised there was a rescue centre on my doorstep. I immediately emailed Jann and we arranged a meeting. To my delight Jann and I just clicked, 2 mature single crazy females (sorry Jann). Jann introduced me to the donkeys, ponies and horses and my goal was sorted. Jann knew she had a beginner on her hands and over the past 8 months has patiently taught me not only how to look after these animals, but to give these beautiful animals the love, care and pampering they deserve in their later life. They all have their individual backgrounds, some at the top of their game in their prime and now in retirement they are in the best place to live out in style and love. Jann’s passion and dedication is infectious and I am so happy and proud to be a part of French’s Care Haven. If I could I would be there every day. I work fulltime in Occupational Therapy within a Mental Health setting and after a busy week my sanctuary is my Saturday’s with the animals. I can immerse myself, forget the hectic week and give these so deserving animals the love and care they deserve. This is my therapy. Ebonyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre HANDS, FACE, SPACE! Where have we heard that before? The team at Shelley has it all in order. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean we are open to all, but we are doing what we can, and some of the rules have been eased since I last wrote. There is still no â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;side walkingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; such as you see on out logo, but our volunteers are allowed to touch the riders if necessary. So we can open up to a few more riders, but outside in the open air of course. Babs and I are still completely locked down. The amazing horses and ponies carry on as normal, up to their knees in mud at all the field gates but finding grass to nibble on the slopes, generating lots of you-know-what for the volunteers to pick up. The new arrivals are settling in well. The lack of work has enabled Lyn to give them extra time to watch and learn from the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;oldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hands, so they appear really chilled, and look relaxed. With no clients allowed into the yard (yes, they are still arriving round the back past the midden) its all very orderly and quiet. I am pushed to pick up the gossip but I have noticed the pong of hand sanitizer. The live herd seems to take even this new smell in its stride. Obviously this winter will be challenging to all our human friends. November brings loud pops and bangs to us all. Back in June, Tony hit the headlines after completing a ten kilometre walk on his prosthetic legs, raising money for Evelina London, Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital, where he was treated by consultant surgeon Michail Kokkinakis. Tony had been inspired by Captain Tom Mooreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s walk, and was determined to make people focus on his ability and not see the disability. He is an incredibly determined individual who appears not to recognise the words, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;you cannotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Tony, in turn, inspired former teacher, Sarah KingdonWard, to write a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story featuring the irrepressible young hero, who set out to raise ÂŁ500 for Evelina London, and has now raised well over a million pounds. With illustrations by 13 year-old Evie Thacker, and digital editing by local artist Joanne Mitchell, the book contains bright and cheerful pictures showing the young hero Tony in real and imagined scenes, together with questions posed to the reader on every page to encourage an immersive reading experience. She is the only qualified consultant in the whole of the department which means all procedures and treatment that need her input have had to be stopped. There are so many Charitable causes that are all in desperate need of support, our Charity is not widely known, we do not advertise and receive no funding other than what we can raise ourselves. Looking After The River Brett We all know and love the River Brett that flows through Hadleigh and its villages. We enjoy the riverside walks, the familiar geese and swans and the lovely Toppesfield Bridge. It worries us too, the duck weed, the flooding risk in winter and the low, stagnant levels in the summer. How healthy is our river? Do we need to do more to look after it? Recently the Environment Agency published the latest water quality results for rivers in England for 2016-19. Only 16% of our waterways are in good ecological health and none achieved good chemical status. There has been no improvement since 2016. The report on the River Brett gives cause for concern. Overall it only achieved ‘moderate’ rather than ‘good’ for ecological and chemical health and failed for the presence of hazardous substances. The Brett was prevented from reaching ‘good’ because of the quality of plants and fish, the flow and levels of water, sewage, land drainage and runoff (both agricultural and urban). As well as impacts from within the Hadleigh area, there are also potential upstream causes and downstream effects and a number of agencies and people involved (the Environment Agency, Anglian Water, local government, landowners etc). All government agencies are under pressure from cutbacks so, as well as lobbying for change, we are thinking about what HEAT, as a community group, can do. For a start we can all look at our personal choices. Our priorities are: • thinking about the ‘3 Ps’ when we flush the toilet (only put pee, poo and toilet paper down the pan) • avoiding using pesticides and insecticides in our gardens, allotments and on driveways and paths • disposing of waste sensibly • only pour water into the drain • using less and phosphate free detergent • report any pollution, unusual river flow, badly damaged river banks or fish in distress to the Environment Agency hotline 0800 807060 HEAT will be looking to do more to protect our lovely river and its precious ecology. Visitors can scrap the paper with new digital parking Motorists parking in Babergh and Mid Suffolk can now scrap their paper ticket and go digital – to help protect their health and the environment. Visitors needing to drive into the districts to shop local, instead of walking or cycling, can now choose to go paperless in the councils’ ticketed car parks. Thanks to the introduction of MiPermit, Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s shoppers can now help to reduce waste by opting for a digital ticket instead. With around a million visits made to the councilowned car parks each year, opting for MiPermit could save millions of pieces of paper going in the bin annually. Virtual tickets are available online, via the MiPermit app, by phone, and by text both in advance and on the day – allowing visitors to choose an option to suit them. Tickets and further information can be obtained via the councils MiPermit portal. Further electric vehicle charging points across the districts, and upgrading car park machines to include a card payment option, continue to be explored.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I do entirely appreciate that for many of you the dizzying sense that Coronavirus rules and guidance constantly change has been a frustration. When the message was ‘stay at home’ it was simple but also blunt. The fact is if you lump everyone together with one straightforward instruction policy, the making is always easier but that is clearly no longer the ideal solution for every part of the country, leading to variation and nuance – as well as inevitable complexity. The best thing to do if you are unsure of rules in our locality is to check at www.gov.uk/find-coronavirus-local-restrictions. Whatever the rules at any given time we must avoid alarmism. There has been a tendency for particular graphs or statistics to get blown out of proportion, leading to undue fear and scaremongering. Covid remains a very serious illness and the pandemic has presented immense problems for Governments around the world. But the basic truth has not changed that if we each do our bit as far as possible to follow the guidelines – face masks; distancing; washing hands etc – then we will reduce the virus’s actual impact on our society. I appreciate that this is once again a very difficult time for local businesses, with the second wave and its associated restrictions bringing further huge uncertainty for all firms, and particular challenges for those in directly affected sectors, especially hospitality. On the plus side, the Chancellor has announced a new set of interventions, including further wage and grant support for businesses forced to shut. Crucially for company cash flow we have provided much longer terms to repay the Covid-related Government ‘bounce back’ loans that have supported so many firms. Locally, we have seen the vacant Philips Avent factory in Glemsford purchased by new owners to make chocolate, creating new jobs and investment. We have also seen millions of pounds awarded to two brilliant cultural venues in Sudbury: The Quay Theatre and St Peter’s. One day we will again be removing rather than restoring freedoms, and when that time comes, such attractions will once more have a central part to play in our lives. I’m sorry this is causing you to worry. However, fortunately, there’s lots you can do to keep bills down. A. Firstly, see if you can get a better deal by changing your energy supplier. However, as well as comparing prices, it’s a good idea to check the customer service record of a company before switching. Citizens Advice has a price comparison tool on its website www.citizensadvice.org.uk, and our star rating assesses the customer service records of the 40 biggest companies. There are also little, everyday things that can help, such as making sure televisions and other devices are switched off and not left on standby; washing clothes on a lower temperature; and only filling the kettle with the water you need. You’re right in another way about bills going through the roof - and the walls. One way of cutting costs in the long term is to invest in good insulation - or ask your landlord to do so. If your pay is close to the national minimum wage, the extra costs of working from home could be counted as a pay cut and bring you below the legal level. Talk to your manager or HR department, or your union rep if that feels more comfortable. Finally, your employer should pay for any costs connected to your health and safety - such as a suitable chair for work at a computer. It’s also worth looking at your employer’s expenses policy, you may be able to claim for several other things, such as printer ink or telephone line rental. Local community minded companies join forces to help people with hearing loss Ipswich Building Society and East Anglian hearing care experts, The Hearing Care Centre, have joined forces to help local people with hearing loss who have been impacted by the mandatory introduction of facemasks. Hearing Care Centre founder and senior audiologist Karen Finch said “When it became mandatory in July that facemasks must be worn, we gave away over 350 “Please speak clearly” badges to help with communication issues for those that wear them by alerting shop assistants, or anyone else they need to communicate with, that they have an issue and that clear speech from the other person will greatly help. We were delighted when Ipswich Building Society contacted us to say they wanted to help too by giving away more badges through their branches.” “It has been shown that wearing a mask does decrease the ability for speech to be understood. This applies for people with normal hearing levels too, so for those with a hearing loss it can be a real problem. Churches Conservation Trust secures ÂŁ1.67 million National Lottery Heritage Fund grant for Grade I listed St Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Sudbury The Churches Conservation Trust (CCT), the national heritage charity protecting historic churches at risk, has received a ÂŁ1.67 million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to transform Sudburyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s St Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church into an exciting cultural and community venue, fit for the 21st Century. Led by the CCT with support from volunteers and partners from the local and regional community, the ambitious project will repair and adapt a landmark Grade I listed building into a renewed multi-purpose venue for community and corporate events, performance, heritage, arts and learning activities. Work is due to start on-site in October 2021 and is anticipated to take around 12 months to complete. Since medieval times, St Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s has sat at the heart of Sudbury in Suffolk, overlooking the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bustling historic market place. The building has been used and cared for by the local community for many years, but is now in need of urgent repairs and a viable and sustainable future. The project will give the historic building a new lease of life and enable an exciting expanded programme of cultural events, learning activities for schools and families, closer working relationships with key organisations and businesses, and create a range of new employment and volunteering opportunities. It will ensure that urgent repairs to the roof are undertaken, along with the inclusion of a new fully accessible upper mezzanine floor, installation of toilets and development of a new cafĂŠ and bar area. Crucially it will make it possible to unleash St Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s full potential and secure its future for generations to come. St Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sits at the centre of wider regeneration plans for Sudbury, and in addition to The National Lottery Heritage Fundâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s award of ÂŁ1.67 million, we are grateful to have received additional support from donors including Babergh District Council and the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership Growing Places Fund. The following facts may help dispel those myths. MYTH Having flu is just like having a heavy cold. FACT A bad bout of flu is much worse than a heavy cold. Flu symptoms come on suddenly and sometimes severely. They include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles as well as a cough and a sore throat. You’re likely to spend two or three days in bed. MYTH Having the flu vaccine gives you flu and is not safe. FACT No it doesn’t and it is very safe. The injected flu vaccine that is given to adults contains Inactivated flu viruses, so it can’t give you flu. The side effects linked with the vaccine are almost always mild and short lived. MYTH I had the flu jab last year so I don’t need it again. FACT Yes you do. The viruses that cause flu can change every year, so you need a vaccination each year that matches the new viruses. The vaccine usually provides protection for the duration of the flu season that year. MYTH The flu jab doesn’t work. FACT Flu vaccine is the best protection we have against an unpredictable virus. Studies have shown that the flu jab will help prevent you getting flu. It won’t stop all flu viruses and the level of protection may vary but if you do get the flu after the vaccination it’s likely to be milder and shorter-lived that it would otherwise have been. MYTH Flu can be treated with antibiotics. FACT No, it can't. Viruses cause flu, and antibiotics only work against bacteria. You may be prescribed antiviral medicines to treat your flu. Antivirals do not cure flu, but they can make you less infectious to others and reduce the length of time you may be ill. To be effective, antivirals have to be given within a day or two of your symptoms appearing. A bacterial infection may occur as a result of having the flu, in which case you may be given antibiotics. MYTH I can’t have the flu jab when I’m pregnant as it will affect my baby. FACT You should have the flu jab no matter what stage of pregnancy you’re in. If you are pregnant you could get very ill if you get flu which could easily be bad for your baby. Having the jab can also protect your baby against flu after they’re born and during the early months of life. MYTH Children can’t have the flu vaccine. FACT Children over the age of six months who are "at risk" of serious illness if they catch the flu are eligible for a flu vaccine on the NHS. All children in primary school and all children in the first year of secondary school will also have a flu vaccine on the NHS. The flu vaccine is generally given to children aged 6 months to 2 years as an injection, and as a nasal spray for children aged 2 to 18 years. Children ‘at risk’ from flu include those with a pre-existing illness such as a respiratory or neurological condition, or children who are having treatment such as chemotherapy. Kersey Mill Open Days 2020 has certainly been a challenging year. On reflection, now that we are well into Autumn with Christmas on the horizon, time seems to have flown by very quickly since the country was plunged into lockdown back in March. Back then we were all hoping that when restrictions could be lifted, life would return to normal as soon as possible. However it soon became apparent this was not to be the case and sadly our plans for Drive It Day in April had to be cancelled, as were the Mill Open Days which had been scheduled throughout the spring and summer months. Kersey Mill and the gardens re-opened as from 4th July, and most of the businesses on site were also back up and running. During August it was encouraging to see so many visitors to the site taking advantage of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme at The Millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kitchen and we have also seen a number of classic and vintage car enthusiasts and cycling clubs meeting in the grounds here - albeit socially distanced and following the latest guidance. In spite of all the setbacks, we remain optimistic, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re making plans for the lead up to Christmas, as the Mill is being transformed for the Santaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Workshop events in December, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll shortly begin to set out our Open Day spring and summer schedule for 2021. Mill Restoration update Having achieved so much during 2019, it was our intention to complete the final stages of the Mill restoration this year. With some of the furniture yet to be reinstated, we were able to mill our first test batch of stone ground flour back in April. We reported in May that work to the crown wheels had been completed, however the damsels and the refurbished hopper were still not in place. We were also about to reinstate the grain bins and chutes to feed the stones, which had been delayed due to issues with producing a replica gimbal for the second set of stones, to match the original version for the first set. Now with the preparations for Santaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Workshops well underway, everything has been put on hold. In order to ensure the safety of everyone, special measures have been put in place to comply with the latest government guidance. We took the decision to go ahead with our plans and have adapted the event by making the visit a journey through a one way system and including additional attractions along the way. The Santaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Workshops start from Saturday 5th December and the hour long sessions run each Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am to 5pm. For the final week, additional Workshops have been added to include Monday 21st, Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd December. Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Appointments Available

Hadleigh & District Garden Club One of the first talks I went to at the garden club, several years ago now, was about bees and how to provide food for them all year round, the speaker was someone from The Place For Plants in East Bergholt. I can't remember her name but I do remember that she was an extremely good speaker and that the speaker's table was covered with examples of shrubs and perennials for all seasons. She began in January with the importance of bulbs and went on through the year ending with the flowers of ivy during the winter. There is usually a wide variety of plants around in the spring and summer but it is important to provide sources of nectar into the autumn and winter too. The photo shows a caryopteris plant being visited by a very enthusiastic bee, there were plenty of them around when I took the photo but it's hard to get them to all stand still long enough for a group shot! This plant flowers in late summer and well into the autumn, it has a perfume that is a little like lavender and the bees love it, it is very easy to grow and doesn't mind a bit of neglect, and it just needs a prune in early spring to encourage new growth, there is also a variegated variety. Some other plants useful for pollinators because they flower into the autumn are sedums, salvias and asters and as the season goes on there are winter flowering shrubs such as lonicera and the sweetly scented sarcococca, commonly known as the winter flowering box. Don't forget that alongside bees there are many other different types of pollinators in the garden and having a shallow pool of water as well as areas of long grass and leaving seedheads on plants will help to support them. Finally, though just as importantly, allowing the garden to be a little untidy over the winter all helps to provide a rich habitat for pollinators and other wildlife till spring comes round again. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

This view of the High Street is looking south towards Station Road was taken some time between 1900-1910. Can you recognize the location, the building at the left looks familiar but what is the dominating building beyond? The White Lion Hotel is shown at the left and what was to become Barclays Bank next with its iron railings removed for the war effort during the Second World War. The next, and imposing building was Cooks Emporium and was probably the largest shop in the town. John Cook was owner in 1864 and traded as a grocer and draper. He was followed by his son, Robert Hyatt Cook who increased the range to include wines and spirits, as a warehouseman, to being undertakers. The Cook family were also farmers and resided at Frenchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Farm. The store closed during the 1930s and was demolished soon after the Second World War. The High Street Car-Park now occupies the site. At the entrance to the Market Place to the right is shown the Hadleigh Post Office. The Hadleigh Archive is administered by the Hadleigh Town Council, Archives Department, The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh IP7 5DN. Harvest Assembly Reverend Elke Cattermole joined the children at Bildeston Primary School for their Harvest assembly today, which was slightly different from their usual Harvest assembly. Due to the COVID pandemic and social distancing rules, pupils had to stay in their classrooms in their bubbles and the assembly was broadcast virtually which included wonderful parent participation! Children brought donations of non-perishable foods which were displayed in their classroom bubbles. These donations will be collected together and will be donated to Bildeston Food Bank. Thank you to everyone for their generosity. Bikeability Thank you to the Bikeability team who came three times over the last few weeks (due to the rain!!) to ensure that our Year 5 pupils completed the necessary cycle training to ensure that they continue to stay safe on our roads. Every child was handed a certificate and a badge for their participation. Hadleigh Walkers Unfortunately, we were unable to walk in October due to the rule of 6, the fact that we are not an insured organised sporting group and the walk leaders being in their 70’s and wish to be around for their 80’s. Therefore, our organised monthly walks will be discontinued for the foreseeable future. We are still regularly planning and checking out suitable routes and can provide maps for any who want to walk in their own small groups. Self-isolation support payments for low-income earners in Babergh Residents on low-incomes and unable to work because they have been asked to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace, can now claim a £500 payment to compensate for loss of earnings. As part of a nationwide Government scheme, residents in Ipswich, Babergh and Mid Suffolk who are on low incomes and are unable to work because they have been told by NHS Test and Trace that they have to self-isolate can now apply for a lump sum payment from their local councils. Money will be paid into their accounts within days of their applications being verified, to relieve immediate financial hardship. People who receive notification from NHS Test and Trace to self-isolate because they have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19, will be entitled to a £500 support payment if they meet all of the following requirements: They comply with the NHS Test and Trace notification to self-isolate are employed or self-employed, are unable to work from home and will lose income as a result AND in receipt of one of the following benefits: Universal Credit, Working Tax Credit, Income-based Employment and Support Allowance, Income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Pension Credit. Discretionary payments may also be available in exceptional circumstances to individuals who meet the main qualifying criteria (i.e. low-income and unable to work because they are self-isolating) but are not in receipt of qualifying benefits and are facing severe financial hardship. The scheme is being administered by the Shared Revenue Partnership – with a fast and simple application form now available on the councils’ websites (see below for link), together with information about how to easily provide evidence required and further details about the scheme. Kenny Scarff - a personal history of a Hadleigh family butcher As many of you will already know my dad, Kenny Scarff passed away in August. His funeral was held at St Mary’s in September under Covid restrictions with limited numbers but as a family we were overwhelmed by the support shown by the people of Hadleigh lining the route along Angel Street and standing socially distanced outside the church. It was particularly moving to hear the applause as we passed the end of Long Bessells where dad had worked in the butchers for so many years. I think that is when my own tears bubbled over. Our family’s butchery legacy in Hadleigh spans over 100 years starting way back in 1890 when Henry and Zoe Scarff arrived here to establish their shop. Their second son Cecil carried on the family tradition and, after a short break when Cecil died, there was once more a Scarff butcher in town when my dad Kenny started his own apprenticeship after leaving school at 14. He learnt his trade well becoming one of the most respected butchers in the town. With a twinkle in his eye, nothing was too much trouble for his valued customers, he even sold our Christmas turkey on more than one occasion! He would slide on the sawdust, offer advice on the best cuts of meat for every occasion and he unquestionably made the best sausages in town. Kenneth Scarff was born in December 1943, the nineth child of Cecil and Jessie, although two of his siblings had died as infants before he was born. He was the only child not to have a middle name, the family joke being they had run out of names by the time he was born. Dad lived at 59 George Street as a child, a house no longer there since Inkerman Close was built. He went to school in Bridge Street, he never moved far, and by the end of his butchery career he was living above the shop in Long Bessells. Officially called Hadleigh Food Services at the time it was much better known as Kenny’s and Molly’s. We just called it “the shop”. Mum and dad managed it together for 14 years, a mammoth undertaking for a couple who had no formal academic qualifications between them but something they both flourished at. Dad met and courted my mum Pauline in the sixties. He would take her gifts of meat to test her culinary skills. She passed with flying colours and they married in September 1966. Two years later I was born, followed by my brother Marcus in 1970 - the family was complete. When we were younger, I remember dad spending much of his time in the garden or playing darts and crib at the pub. But as his business responsibilities increased, he could be found not only on the shop floor serving customers during the day but regularly cleaning the shop floor in the evenings as well as many other tasks behind the scenes, he rarely stopped. Eventually when the lease was up he, almost reluctantly, retired, I think he was always worried about letting his loyal customers down. However retirement suited him; his garden flourished although his best days at darts were behind him. He finally had the chance to travel with 2 trips to New Zealand as well as various holidays in Europe. He had a close group of friends to socialise with as well as hosting many family gatherings to keep the Scarff clan together. He rang each one every week without fail at a certain time. His own family was growing too with 3 grandsons and an “adopted” granddaughter added into the mix and he was proud of every one. He first became ill in 2014 and was diagnosed with cancer, he beat it the first time round but when it returned it was inoperable and he started chemotherapy. The staff at Ipswich hospital was amazing throughout, and dad with his usual cheery smile was a big hit with the nurses, although mum made cakes and sausage rolls sometimes for him to take to chemo sessions which no doubt helped. Eventually the treatment wasn’t enough and bravely dad made decisions about what he wanted. Most important he wanted to be at home to allow friends and family to visit without restrictions. We sat down as a family to plan his final wishes for a celebratory thanksgiving service, no flowers except a single red rose to be laid on his coffin from mum, the love of his life for over 50 years. In lieu of flowers we asked for donations to go to Macmillan Cancer Support. It is a testament to dad’s character that we raised over £1700, a truly staggering total. One short sentence at the end of this hardly seems enough words but we want to thank EVERYONE who donated, sent cards and letters, lined the streets, and have supported us in so many ways. It has meant a lot at this difficult time. Thank you, from Sarah on behalf of all the family

The funeral was at Seven Hills Crematorium on August 10th with Paul Powen, Celebrant, taking the service. Terry was finally laid to rest on his birthday September 22nd at Hadleigh Cemetery. Thank you to everyone at Kingsbury and Saunders, donations for Alzheimers will be passed on. I miss him, Margaret

We’re continuing to work hard to get the service back to some semblance of normal and we are getting there slowly. I’m sure you can all appreciate, we really want to get everything back up and running for you, but we must do it in a way that is safe for staff and our customers, so we are slowly reintroducing services when we find a way of doing them safely. We’re really pleased to have reopened the whole library for browsing on 21st September. There is a one-way system in place, and we are limiting the number of customers allowed in at once to 14, this is to ensure we comply with government rules on social distancing. We have put measures in place to ensure we keep everyone as safe as possible. There will be sanitiser stations set up around the library, and we do ask that customers are mindful of the floor markings and follow the one way system in place and if you come in as a family please stick together. Our Current Services Browsing – this is the main service customers have been asking for and we’re pleased to be able to offer it again. There is now access to the main library, mezzanine, and children’s library, feel free to come in and have a look around. Computer sessions - you can book a slot on our public computer for 30-50 minutes at a time for one session per day. Photocopying - this is self-service only Scanning - we are offering a scanning service, if you want to scan documents to a USB stick you can do that on our photocopier. If you want to scan documents to an email address, we can also do that for you. Reservations – Our reservation system has been up and running for a few months now. You can reserve books from around the county either by phoning us on the number below or visiting our website, details are also below. Select and collect - Much like the reservations you can call us or complete the online form available on our website. The staff in the library will select a few books for you based on what you would like and what is available in Sudbury at the time. Thank you all for your continued support and patience, we really do appreciate it. We are working hard on a plan to introduce all the services you love, but I'm sure you will understand we need to make sure they are introduced safely. At this stage we do not have a solid timeframe from when we will be back to "normal". We are reviewing things regularly, so hopefully we will be able to add things in as time goes on. The collection at the URC Church I would like to thank all those fine Hadleigh residents who donated hygiene supplies to send to the refugees in the Moria camp in Greece. They are already struggling to make a go of things having fled the violence in Syria and a large part of the camp has been destroyed by fire. Now the potential disaster of a Covid outbreak hangs over them and a shipment of soaps, toothpaste, nappies etc. will make things a little more bearable. Hadleigh joined with other communities in Suffolk and around the country to send a message of care. It's good to know that, despite our own concerns, there is care for our more distant neighbours. Surviving Winter in Hadleigh We are a small local charity consisting of three unpaid trustees, registered with the Charities Commission under number 1162885. Our declared aim is: The relief of financial hardship, particularly fuel poverty, of people living in and around Hadleigh, by providing funds for the purchase and distribution of supplies such as blankets, coal, clothing, electric blankets, flasks, hot water bottles etc. as well as assisting in the purchase of fuel and helping with the cost of emergency repairs of heating systems to enable people to “Survive Winter in Hadleigh”. To date the charity has: 1) Purchased and distributed blankets, clothing, thermal underwear and socks and replaced an electric blanket heavily relied on by an old lady. 2) Purchased and distributed coal some of which was kindly donated by somebody converting from solid fuel to gas central heating. 3) Financially assisted people, particularly the elderly, to afford their heating bills a) One lady was frightened to switch on her electric fire for fear she had not set enough aside to meet the bill. b) Another elderly lady, caring for her terminally ill son, feared she could not afford the bill for oil for the forthcoming winter. c) An elderly couple; the husband had been in hospital for major surgery, was recovering at home but his wife was worried that she would not be able to keep the house warm enough during his convalescence. 4) Purchased warm clothing to enable a disabled young lady pursue her passion for horse riding over the winter months. 5) Paid for the servicing of a mobility scooter which is the only means an infirm couple, living on the fringe of Hadleigh, have of getting into the town. 6) Purchased and distributed “panic alarms” particularly for the elderly to enable them to bring attention and raise help in the event of a fall or in times of stress. Free arts programme to address rural isolation in Suffolk’s older residents Suffolk Artlink has launched a free arts programme aimed at addressing rural isolation in Suffolk’s older residents. ‘What is your village made of?’ invites adults (55+) to take part in activities that encourage creativity and connection with others, using their home villages and towns as inspiration. The programme has been designed as part of the arts charity’s ‘Make, Do & Friends’ project and will last six months, running throughout autumn and winter. Professional artists will be posting regular activity ideas on a blog, and offering opportunities to share what you create with others. Each activity, including photography, drawing, creative writing and printmaking. invites you to explore and enjoy different aspects of your surroundings. Activity packs can also be sent out in the post to anyone that isn’t able to access the internet. Online group creative get-togethers are also planned. Get to grips with Zoom in one of their friendly skill sharing sessions or take part in a Radio Drama Listening Club. This strand of activities will help you develop technical skills and confidence whilst enjoying a creative workshop. In addition, artists will be visiting villages across Mid-Suffolk and Babergh and will collaborate with village residents to create artworks, drawing on the many and varied ways in which communities connect. Carrie Phoenix, Suffolk Artlink Project Officer, explains: “Rural isolation continues to be an issue for our older populations - particularly during these times of social distancing. We’ve seen how beneficial being creative can be when dealing with life’s challenges. It’s a great way to boost spirits, provide renewed inspiration and bring people together. We have created a flexible programme of inspiring arts activities that are free and accessible to everyone. Some can be done in your own time and the results shared online, others will bring people together in ‘real life’ - all following the current guidelines of course! What a day for Ladies Captain Jane Golding! Not the original date due to Covid 19 but still a very enjoyable day despite the rain. As is the tradition at Stoke By Nayland, a golf buggy was decorated depicting her hobbies including hockey and her involvement with the Brownies. Instead of being given the usual bouquet of flowers, Jane was presented with a few tins of Guinness which were very much appreciated. At the halfway hut, on the 10th Gainsborough Championship course, Jane's husband Paul and her sister Hannah, gave out liquid refreshment and food goody bags, both very welcome by the 42 ladies who were playing in teams of three. Debbie Howlett took photographs of each and every team with the Captain. The competition was called The 'Gold---ing' Ball and it was in a format called “yellow ball” which is a team format and each team member alternates using the “yellow ball” which counts as double points. But of course if you lose the yellow ball then you lose the double points bonus for the rest of the round. The 10th Gainsborough lake being the biggest obstacle of course. The winning team were Fran Chandler, Lesley Garnett and Catriona Chaplin with a score of 107 stableford points. Second, Margaret Bentley, Mal Went and Suzanne Shaw-Smith with 100 points and third with 95 points, Hilary Cairn, Caroline Lowe and Barbara Rowe. Best front 9 Sue Gregory, Sarah Viner and Sue Spittlehouse with 60 points and best back 9 Lesley Hitchcock, Barbara Jones and Jill Line with 42 points. Gift bags were handed out personally by Jane as each group of ladies finished the 18th, a very kind gesture much appreciated by all the lady members. The Ladies section had a collection for Jane's special day and the monies raised are going towards a new golf bag. A very special day for a very special Ladies Captain.
