Hidden Gardens a record success!

We raised over £6500 thanks to the 35 gardeners in Hadleigh who opened their gardens to the public, generous sponsorship from over 20 local businesses, the 621 visitors who bought programmes to visit the gardens, and the everpopular ploughman’s lunches and cakes on sale in the church. The pandemic meant cancelling the open gardens in 2020, and moving the event from June to September this year which proved very popular, with many people commenting on what an interesting change it made to see gardens at a different time of year. Next year in 2022 we will return to an early June opening to show off a whole different set of blooms. There were very different types of garden on show ranging from larger lawned areas with trees and beautiful borders, to those aimed at offering wildlife havens, and smaller courtyards filled with plants and ideas. The high street was bustling with visitors holding their green programmes, who provided extra trade for town centre shops. St Mary’s Church was packed with people enjoying lunches thanks to our team of volunteer caterers, so much so that tables even spilled on to the lawn outside. Last year’s event had to be cancelled due to the pandemic so we ran a photographic competition instead which attracted 77 entries, and we repeated the competition in 2021 with winners again receiving Benton End irises kindly donated by a high street garden. The event is organised by the Friends of St Mary's Church (and Deanery Tower) in Hadleigh, with all funds raised going towards the upkeep and repair of these two historic buildings. Christmas Presence Well, well, here we are again! Will somebody please explain where the time goes?! The last couple of years have been truly challenging, but we will be celebrating 7 years of The Christmas Present Trust this December. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the organisation, perhaps you are new to the area, or maybe you don’t read your Village Edition from cover to cover The Christmas Present Trust provides a free traditional meal, or dietary alternative, and an afternoon of entertainment on Christmas Day for anyone in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, is unable to be with family or friends at this time. Fingers crossed we will be able to go ahead with the celebratory gathering in The Ansell Centre, but we need to follow Covid guidelines, whatever they may be in December. However, the pandemic didn’t stop us last year, and thanks to a team of brilliant volunteers, we were able to deliver nearly 100 meals and Christmas gifts to people, with a doorstep carol or two to add a sprinkling of festive cheer. This event is not possible without a large number of volunteers, who give of their time selflessly over the Christmas period. The Christmas Present Trust is also indebted to individuals, businesses and charitable organisations who support the work we do. If you are among them, please accept our heartfelt thanks, as without donations of time, money, goods and services, we would not be able to operate. All Change at the Art Station Isla Spraggons’ delightful pictures will leave the walls of the Health Centre to make room for a totally different art form, photography. Although Chris Cullen is known to most as Dr Cullen, what is less well known is his flair for photography. Proof of this talent will be on show at the Practice where several of his striking pieces will be on display. Chris has been a keen photographer for over 30 years. Although qualifying as a doctor meant he had less time for his hobby, he returned to his camera with renewed enthusiasm about ten years ago. Suffolk is often the subject of his work but he also greatly inspired by the dramatic landscapes of his native Scotland. His talent has not gone unnoticed. He has been a finalist or received commendations in the annual competitions of several prestigious national and international photographic publications. On Saturday 18th September Spokes for Strokes completed their Charity Cycle Ride in aid of The Stroke Unit at Ipswich Hospital and NHS Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Caroline House in Norwich. When Liane Stone suffered a major stroke in October 2019, she received lifesaving treatment and care in both units. Liane, her family and friends wanted to raise £10,000 in recognition of the care she received and Spokes for Strokes was born. On the day 60 cyclists took part, some completed a round trip of 110 miles between Ipswich and Norwich and other completed 55 miles between Norwich and Ipswich. There was also an army of 35 helpers on the day traveling between both locations to ensure the welfare and safety of the riders. At the end of the bike ride we are pleased to announce the current total raised is a staggering £12,700! Liane and all the team members involved with Spokes for Strokes wish to thank everyone who has supported them, sent messages of the encouragement and congratulations. It has been uplifting for all of us knowing these units will now have additional funds to enhance their services and facilities to optimise patient care. The Great Wall of Hadleigh Many people walk past our 150-year-old wall in Pound Lane. Local Hadleigh character, 87-year-old John Cunningham took on the long task of repointing (using lime mortar in keeping with the surrounding area). During the repointing, it became locally known as the ‘Great Wall of Hadleigh’. John enjoyed working on the wall and received numerous comments and compliments from passers-by. He has now completed his task admirably and thinks that the wall will now last another 150 years! Well, done John!

Yarn Worx, Hadleigh’s New Yarn Shop We may have only been open a few weeks but what an amazing few weeks it’s been. Our knit nights and knit & natter mornings have been a roaring success. People with common interests have come together to knit or crochet in each other’s company and some beautiful friendships have formed… One of our regular customers from Newmarket who needed some advice on a knitting pattern met up in the shop with another customer from Ipswich. These two people initially met at one of our knit nights, hit it off and swapped phone numbers. Our learn to knit and learn to crochet courses continue to be ever popular with all current dates fully booked. We will be releasing more dates shortly so do keep in touch if you want to reserve a space on one of these. We do plan to offer different courses for more advanced knitters and crocheters. These are likely to take place in the new year and include knitting in the round, sock knitting, Amigurumi (the art of knitting or crocheting stuffed toys), brioche knitting and more. With the evenings drawing in and cooler weather just around the corner, we have started to think about autumnal colours and thicker, cosier yarns. Would you like to be the Local Recorder for Hintlesham & Chattisham? The Suffolk Local History Council runs a Recorders Scheme throughout Suffolk. We administer a network of volunteers to ensure that the ‘present’ is adequately recorded at local level for the ‘future’. A Recorder will note significant happenings in their parish and collect their local parish magazines, leaflets, election pamphlets and newspaper cuttings. At the end of each year, they are asked to submit a short report summarising the activities of their parish. The reports are deposited at the Suffolk Record Office and available to future researchers together with the collected items. You do not need to be a historian; you do not need any qualifications other than an interest in your parish. Sudbury & District Citizens Advice I’m going back to university and moving into a shared house with friends for the first time. Although I’m excited, I’m also a bit nervous as I’ve never rented from a private landlord before. The house looked fine when we viewed it, but that was months ago now and I’ve heard horror stories about dodgy landlords for student houses. What should I look out for when I move in? Renting a house with friends is usually an exciting time. Most landlords are reasonable people who look after their properties and tenants well, but it’s always a good idea to know your rights. Here’s a checklist of things to do when you first move in: ● Make sure you have your landlord’s contact details. Your landlord is responsible for keeping your home in good condition and arranging repairs when they’re needed. They should be your first point of contact if anything goes wrong. ● Make sure your deposit is protected. Check that your landlord has given you information about the scheme used to protect your deposit. ● Take photos on the day you move in. It’s also worth asking your landlord or letting agent for an inventory, to check everything is in order. Use this to note down any problems and the condition of the furniture, kitchen, carpets, bathroom etc. ● Check if you’re in a ‘house in multiple occupation’. If you’re living with two or more people who aren’t part of your family, and share a toilet, bathroom or kitchen with you, this is considered an HMO. This means your landlord must make sure your home meets certain safety standards. This includes making sure smoke alarms are installed and there’s a safe fire exit. The landlord must also ensure shared areas such as staircases and corridors are clean and in good repair. Some HMOs need to be licensed by the council - if you’re unsure whether this applies to your home, check with your local council. ● Make sure your landlord gives you: a copy of the Gas Safety Certificate, an Energy Performance Certificate and a How to Rent leaflet. ● Understand your tenancy agreement. It’s important to know who’s responsible for paying bills and what to do if there are any changes, like if someone wants to move out. The Citizens Advice website explains the different ways shared accommodation can be organised. If you encounter a problem with the property, contact your landlord. They might not already be aware as they shouldn’t come in without your permission. If it relates to disrepair, for example if your heating system fails or there’s damp in the property, it’s best to put this in writing so that you have evidence if you need it later. If your landlord is unresponsive or refuses to help, contact your student services or local Citizens Advice service for support. In serious cases, for example if your health or safety is at risk, you may be advised to contact the council. If you need advice or information, contact Sudbury & District Citizens Advice. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Whilst the fallout from Afghanistan lingers, Parliament’s focus has returned very much to domestic matters, especially Health and Social Care. On the one hand we have had the Covid ‘Winter Plan’ and on the other, his ambitious plan to finally reform social care – funded with a tax rise that will also address the pressing matter of the backlog in elective surgery. The Prime Minister has also reshuffled his Government, and I am delighted to have been appointed as a Minister in the Ministry of Justice. I am very much looking forward to working on my brief alongside the ministerial team. Regarding the Covid protocol for autumn and winter, ‘Plan A’ builds on the success of the vaccine roll-out and provides additional vaccines for millions of people across the UK, with fully vaccinated over-50s and vulnerable people to be offered an additional booster shot. ‘Plan B’ would be implemented if the data demonstrates that the disease presented a greater risk, and focuses on mandatory face masks, possible vaccine passports and working from home guidance. On the new health and social care levy, during the pandemic the country joined together to clap and cheer for our frontline NHS and social care workers. Even now you can find banners and posters still in place around South Suffolk, celebrating and thanking the NHS for their service in an incredibly difficult period. We could borrow the money, but this would be generationally unfair, passing the buck to future taxpayers when we all benefit today. Instead, the Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer have taken the tough but right decision to find the money through our taxes. Yes, this breaches our manifesto commitment, but I believe that most people realise that the pandemic has impacted this country like nothing else in modern history outside of wartime.

I have just moved to Hadleigh from Essex and am loving the Suffolk life! Prior to teaching I used to fit kitchens and bathrooms in my own family business which means I love Design Technology lessons! My specialism is computing as this is my passion and I have taken on the role of Math Lead which I am excited to get my teeth into. In my previous school I taught Years 3 and 5 and stayed there for 7 years. Whatfield is the 2nd school I have taught in and is much smaller than my last! I live with my wife Sarah, who also teaches in the school now (drama with her business, Act First) and my 2 children Emilia and Stanley who also attend Whatfield Primary School. I love spending time with my family, walking with my dog Holly, gaming (when I have the time!) and DIY. French’s Care Haven Hello to all our readers, Autumn is here and winter is fast approaching, so let’s get a good night out booked in your diaries and come along to our Quiz night at The Ansell Centre in Hadleigh on 20th November for a fish and chip fun quiz night. As you all know, as well as the rescued animals that we care for, we also combine the animal care with that of people who are having a difficult time in life. For me I have always seen just how animals can be healers and make a difference in companionship and love to someone’s life, if a person is open to it. In this month’s read I would like to write about a 22 year old young lady that has been under my wing at French’s, working with me and the animals. Lissy has gone through a harrowing time in her life and is coming out the other side in her recovery. I have been given her permission by to write this and I am proud of her in the way she is making such good recovery in her mental and physical strength. Through complete lack of confidence and the bulling that she had going on in her life, Lissy gained a lot of weight and went up to 24 stone. This lead to further bullying, so she went the other way and stopped eating and developed anorexia nervosa, dropping to an alarming 4.1/2 stone! At this time her body’s organs were under such stress, they had all started to fail. Lissy was told she was just a week away from dying when her gallbladder was removed. She was lucky, very lucky that the damage to her other organs did not kill her. I can now say, that with the help and support she is given the 4 days every week that she comes to Frenchs, along with the metal psychology, to gain positive mental strength that I drummed into her about being strong and not letting others negativity effect you, Lissy is gaining weight and mental strength on a weekly basis. She is now 7 stone and has gained enough strength to do the physical jobs needed up at our farm, which she enjoys. I strongly advised Lissy to gain her own independence, by taking driving lessons, with the goal of passing and buying a car, she did just that and her test is booked, fingers crossed she will pass first time. Lissy says that her days up the farm with the animals and me are when she is at her happiest. All you here about nowadays is nasty remarks people make towards others on social media, that leads to some people taking their own lives and as someone who has experienced such negative, spiteful, jealous individuals in my own life, I know what it is like. Fortunately for me I was strong enough to ignore it and if anything it made me more resilient in life, as my love for animals and the work I have been doing with them as a profession for near 50 years now, motivated me through my life to stay focused, keep going, and never give up. Frenchs Care Haven is not just an animal rescue, I have always combined helping people heal and get strong physically and mentally, as well as the animals that have come to me. Attached is a lovely photo of Lissy with Dollymix her favourite horse. Dollymix is 30 years old now and is the sweetest mare and is a perfect friend for Lissy. Hadleigh Community Choir sings again! Yes, the choir even a pandemic can’t keep down for long! We’re back, and rehearsing again every Thursday at 7.30 pm at the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh. Our first session attracted an amazing 48 people, with many new faces coming along to see what it’s like. If you want to see for yourself we welcome everyone whether you’ve sung before or not, or if you’re just a superstar in your own bathroom, and we sing a wide range of songs from pop to show songs to some beautiful sacred pieces and everything in between. For example, to ease ourselves and newcomers back in to it after such a long interval, we’re having fun with Blue Moon, Bring Me Sunshine, Lean On Me, Moon River, The Lion Sleeps Tonight and Kalinka. We’re all there to enjoy ourselves, and led by our musical director we do aim to make the best sound we possibly can, usually performing two concerts each year but we’ll have to see how that goes for the time being. You don’t need to be able to read music and very few of the singers do, and the music team put all the words and the singing parts on our website so you can get more familiar with the songs at home too. So if you just fancy seeing for yourself, come along on Thursday or you may know someone in the choir to come with. Either way you’ll be very welcome. Hadleigh Old School Goes to the Movies at Hallowe’en On Saturday 30th October 2021 Hadleigh Old School is proud to present The Classic Horror Experience. For one night only - Hollywood composer Jason Frederick will take a trip through the world of classic horror film music – playing both live and recorded music, as well as original interview excerpts. Featuring all your favourite film scores including Dracula, Psycho, Theatre of Blood and The Curse of Frankenstein. Also, a complete live-to-picture performance of Jason’s original score to the horror classic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Doors open 6pm for 7pm showtime. The programme comprises a 45 minutes first half, followed by full movie of approximately 60 minutes. A generous interval will allow plenty of time to go to the licensed bar or pose in your Hallowe’en costume in a photo booth provided by fashion photographer Nik Wilding – NB dressing up is entirely optional. Jason Frederick comes to Hadleigh from his Canadian birthplace, via Los Angeles where he composed for Film and TV including Disney’s 101 Dalmatians 2, Top Gear and the classic documentary Bela Lugosi: The Forgotten King. He has also performed at the Royal Albert Hall as well as being a member of a 007 James Bond tribute orchestra. His contact book is a who’s who of Hollywood music legends – Jason’s first gig was to accompany Tony Bennett. For this special Hallowe’en movie night, he has spoken to composers Christopher Gunning (Hands of the Ripper), Paul Lewis (Dr Phibes Rises Again) and Howard Blake (Amityville 3-D). Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) Patient Survey: Thanks to those of you who responded to the Patient Survey. The results are available on the Practice website and Facebook page (details below). Your comments have been carefully considered. The Health Centre Team will now do their best to address patients’ concerns as far as they are able with the resources they have. Like all GP Practices patient numbers have increased as has demand making it more challenging to offer the services of yesteryear. Save time – book on line: Take all the stress out of booking an appointment by phone. Use the Practice’s on line booking service instead. To sign in first request an account ID and link in information from Reception. Once you have signed in you will be able to make your future appointments at your own convenience even when the Practice is closed. Flu Jabs: These have already started with the over 75’s being invited by letter to attend one of the vaccination sessions. The PPG and others will provide volunteers to man the car park and the appropriate areas inside the Practice. Although the jabs are administered very speedily, there are a large number in this age group so the potential for more cars than spaces in the two car parks is highly likely. If you are able to walk or park your car elsewhere this would go some way to alleviate the congestion. Sadly, the Traffic Wardens do not take a break during the vac sessions so remember to display a parking ticket and avoid a hefty fine. At Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School our aim is to ensure that every opportunity is made for all parts of our pupil's days to be the very best they can be. The 2nds started the final round of games in 3rd place in Division 5, and knew that only six points were needed to guarantee 3rd place and promotion. But Adam Miles's side ended the day as champions, courtesy of a nervy one-wicket win over Great Bromley, and the helping hands of East Bergholt and Needham Market both losing, the latter by a single run. It was all that the team deserved after a hard-fought campaign when the runs flowed for many, with Justin Toombs leading the way with 656 runs including seven 50s, but there were also strong seasons for Arran Tampion and Taylor Locke, who both recorded their maiden 100s for the club in the previous week's run fest with Easton. Oliver Clark took 24 wickets and younger brother Matthew 17, and Humphrey Coysh was also an impressive new addition to the bowling line-up. After a long spell of declining fortunes for the Twos, this is a The 1st XI had to settle for 3rd place in Division 1, but can still look back with some satisfaction on the season. Despite not having as stellar a summer as 2019, Kudzai Maunze was still the top run scorer and wicket taker with 481 runs and 23 wickets, and took some stunning catches to change games. Marlon Dias and Matt Kent also weighed in with the bat while the wickets were fairly evenly spread between Dom Manthorpe, Lewis Millions, Kyle Tanner, Tom Piddington and Dan Shanks. A few games were lost which should not have been; but there were also some quite exceptional wins over Mistley and champions Witham - indeed, Ben Wallis's side were the only team to defeat the Essex side who went on to clinch promotion to the East Anglian Premier League. The Sunday side finished the final weekend in style with a terrific win at Castle Hedingham, unquestionably our best of the season. We made merry to rack up 238-8, our highest total of the summer, and then Olly Clark (3-36) and Toby Toombs (4-48) bowled brilliantly at the death to clinch a six-run win. Despite relegation fears, we finished in 3rd place thanks to that result. It was a shame that we could only complete 9 games due to the withdrawals of Castle and Lakenheath, but there were lots of encouraging performances from youngsters like Jack Auld and Rhys Willings, and lots to look forward to next year, including captain Dave Levitt's maiden 50! On Sunday August 29th our family were honoured, in conjunction with our President Gary Girling, to be able to host a match in memory of my father Terry, who many Hadleigh people will know not just for his contribution to the cricket club over more than 50 years but also to the town through a number of local organisations. Many former players returned to don the whites and it was a truly memorable day. We would like to thank everyone who supported the day and helped to make it such a success. It has been a challenging season in many respects, with Covid restrictions in place for much of the time and games lost through the 'pingdemic', but towards the end of the summer we saw some normality return with the full opening of facilities. Hadleigh and District Flower Club It was with delight that Chairman Chris, introduced Chrystal from Norfolk to be our demonstrator this month, the very first since lockdown, Chrystal did not disappoint - her demo was titled "Up the Garden Path", well we all journeyed around her garden with foliage, flowers and much fun. It was such a lovely time to see all the members once again and chat, catching up with lives spent apart by lockdown. Next month we welcome David Wright, another demonstrator from Norfolk, his demo is titled "Broadland Tour". Gardeners talk about the weather – a lot. On the allotments it is usually too wet, too dry, too cold or too hot or any of the above at the wrong time of year! We are all increasingly aware of the climate crisis and what the future may hold for growing fruit and vegetables. Plot holders are looking for ways of growing fruit and vegetables that can cope with unpredictable and extreme weather especially with the predicted summer droughts. The National Allotment Society (NSALG) has produced an excellent series of evidence-based leaflets on climate change, water shortages, drought and allotment growing. Here are some of their messages about what gardeners can do: • Collect and store more rainwater in winter for summer use. • Use a watering can and direct water to the base of the plant. • Watering in the early morning and late afternoon reduces evaporation. • Better to water thoroughly once a week than a small amount more often • Add mulch around plants. • Find out which crops are less water dependent and when different crops benefit most from watering. For example: - Squashes can survive and produce fruits from minimal watering but courgette plants need to be kept constantly moist. - Fruiting crops such as aubergines, cucumbers, sweet corn and tomatoes need constant water throughout their growing period. - Runner beans need constant moisture but French beans can cope with dryer conditions. - Lollo Rosso is more heat resistant than Webbs Wonderful. - Leafy vegetables such as cabbages, chard and spinach along with salad crops need water every stage of growth. - Avoid watering peas and broad beans when young but they will need water at flowering time and about 2 weeks later. - Onions need water to establish and then only in dry spells. - Carrots and parsnips will split if watered irregularly, water before dry conditions develop. - Stem vegetables (celery, celeriac and Florence Fennel) need copious amounts of water to develop and will be damaged by drought conditions The NSALG leaflets can be downloaded from: https://www.nsalg.org.uk/news/new-leaflets-launched/ or http://dryproject.co.uk/

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Like many other groups September saw the start up of our club meetings once more. Now held in the Guild Room opposite St Mary’s Church. Janet Parsons was our speaker and she entertained us with her vast knowledge of Orchids. Solving members questions and even re potting problem plants. It was encouraging to see so many members together with numerous visitors enjoy this social event. Earlier in the month our plant sale was very successful during Hadleigh Hidden gardens, proceeds being shared with St Mary’s Church . Thanks again to all members who donated plants. Our next meeting on Oct 11th at 7.30 pm will be a talk about the History of Perrywood... their garden centre in Sudbury is undergoing a dramatic redevelopment and promises great things for the future. Entrance for the talk is £2 for members and £4 for visitors, with raffle, refreshments and our sales table. A lot of gardening is about forward planning. The runner beans have finished, but leave the best on the plant to dry and save the seed for next year. The same applies to dwarf beans. Garlic needs a long growing season so some self saved cloves can be planted now. Now is the time to plant any of the numerous spring flowering bulbs on sale everywhere. One of my favourites are the small Tete a Tete daffodils. Everyone surely has room for a pot of them. Leave planting tulips till next month. Now is a good time to take cuttings of any special Pelargoniums you may have. Snip off a healthy non flowering growing shoot a couple of inches long, remove the lower leaves, cut just beneath a node. Push the cutting into a pot of gritty compost, water and leave in a well lit place indoors but do not cover. Roots should develop in six to eight weeks. Marathon Number 5 for Stuart I will be running my fifth London Marathon on Sunday 3rd October in aid of Crohn's & Colitis UK. After last year’s “virtual marathon” it will be great to once again be pounding the streets of London! As some of you will know, each year I choose a different charity and I am proud to say that I have now raised over £20,000 for The Stroke Association, National Deaf Children’s Society, Dementia UK, Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, Evelina Children’s Hospital and Bumblebee Children’s Charity. This year my dear friend Sam celebrated her 50th birthday, she has lived with Crohn’s from the age of 20 and I have seen the challenges this brings, yet her determination to enjoy life to the full and positive outlook are a constant inspiration to all of those that know her. Hadleigh Art Club Activities We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Hadleigh Library. For those that ask, we try to give advice/guidance but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group. We charge £3 per session to cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5, due in May. There is a list of weekly topics but these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current weeks) while others will be working on their own subject. Here is the program for October. Lavenham Parish Council News October 2021 The Church Street Toilet Improvements and the New Parish Council Office are now complete and open for use by the community and visitors, after many weeks of delay caused by the shortage of supply in building materials. The 4 new toilets are multi-use, all with Disabled Facilities and Baby Changing. Two are Female, the other two Unisex. All are easy clean and to the latest standards, with individual access doors from the Car Park in line with Covid recommendations. The new Parish Office allows our Parish Clerk to have a place to work and conduct Parish business away from her home. It is also large enough to accommodate Parish Council Working Group Meetings. This development has been made possible with funding from Babergh District Council Using the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) scheme. The New Prentice Street Toilets and improved Car Park Layout has been in place for some time now but the Toilets have not been operational due to the lack of Mains Power. The old supply was condemned when the old block was demolished. A new supply has been ordered but takes many weeks. We have been informed that the installation of the supply will take place between the 19th and 25th of October. There will be a road closure of Prentice St during this period. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but UKPN have told us that it is essential. We anticipate commissioning of the New Toilet Block and Electric Vehicle Charging points soon after then. This development has been made possible with funding from Babergh District Council Using the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) scheme. Purchase of Gas Works on Water Street – after many years of negotiation, we have finally agreed the purchase of the site for £1. The contracts have been signed and we are awaiting Exchange of Contracts & Completion. We have awarded a contract for refurbishment of the site into a Carpark, and will start this work in the autumn. This will give the village much needed extra parking for Residents & Visitors. Church Street Telephone box adoption – We have recently signed the contract to adopt the telephone box for £1. Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club It has been a bit of struggle to get the Carpet Bowl Club up and running fairly normally again, with various different procedures taken on board along the way due to Covid. But quite a few members have come back to play, but some have not, either due to finding new interests or activities over lockdown, or due to uncertainty about the future and Covid. Our Wednesday afternoon sessions are proving popular, but our Thursday evening sessions are less well attended. The evening sessions are important as we used to play friendly matches with other local clubs on some of these sessions. Friendly matches are good fun, usually the home team provides refreshments, often a buffet and we have a raffle. A good social and friendly, competitive evening. We hope to resume these matches at sometime in the future. Providing we are able to keep playing we would like to recruit some new players to compliment our current membership. If you would like to try a fun, social activity, why not come along and see if you would enjoy Carpet Bowls? Our sessions at Lavenham Village Hall are Wednesday 2pm until 4.30pm and Thursday7.30pm until 10pm. Coaching is available on Thursday evenings. Credit where it’s due, that bumptious Chihuahua has acknowledged that, as a fine example of the species, I should present our October news because the 27th is National Black Cat Day. Another annual celebration is Hedgehog Awareness Week in May but they need our help all the time, particularly during Guy Fawkes preparations. Please check for the little chaps under the bonfire BEFORE you set light to it. This has been a bad year for fly strike with hedgehogs suffering horribly. Should you come across a hedgehog, particularly in daylight hours, please take it to a hedgehog rescue or bring it to SESAW immediately. Advance apologies to those with a sensitive stomach but many arrivals have been unfurled to reveal maggots eating them alive. Our prickly friends are now classified as vulnerable on the Mammal Society’s Red List. If “The Truth is Out There” stirs your imagination, an Autumn Charity Talk about UFO’s by author Neil Nixon should interest you. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre It’s wonderful to be open to all comers at last. I’m able to give rides to my own special people, wheelchair bound for far too long, now bravely facing the challenge of riding me again. We take it slowly so nobody gets spooked. September saw a scrappy return of our regulars, did I hear that some parents were a bit slow off the mark? Well, you are not the only ones.... isn’t everyone feeling a bit funny about getting back to normal? Babs and I try to understand, but we are mere machines so there’s no comparison. The live herd had the upheaval of a dog show on September 11th. Four of their fields had to be vacated for the entire day whilst the Shelley Team swung into action and produced an event to remember. Parys and Tilly had the honour of hosting the main ring in their paddock: there were side shows and games (all priced to allow plenty of participation from our younger guests) gaily coloured bunting, lots and lots of dogs, and nearly as many owners. In the yard we had stalls selling lovely things (Babs and I couldn’t see what) wonderful teas and cakes, and the amazing dog agility course run by Sue Barrow in the arena. The ‘boys’, Alfie, Bryn, Roddy, Snoopy and Buzz hosted the car parks in their fields, ably supervised by more Shelly volunteers and some pressganged younger Baileys. Truly a Shelly Family event. My photo shows the exhausted Dog Agility team at the end of the day. There’s a new session on Wednesday afternoons taking place outside my room: It’s called ‘Tea With A Pony’ for people living with dementia. I’m told the details are on our webpage (see below) but I’ll be waggling my ears to hear how that one goes. Well the clocks will change at the end of October and I’ll be working under electric light I expect. We have to have good ventilation in my room and the other enclosed spaces so wrap up warm when you visit! See you in a month, and don’t you get too spooked on 31st. This year’s slightly soggy summer may have disappointed those hoping for a heatwave, but for many fruit farmers the mixture of wet and sunny weather has resulted in heavy crops of summer berries – and Boxford (Suffolk) Farms, based in Stoke by Nayland, is one of them. Rather than see any fruit go to waste – although actually ‘waste’ is the wrong word, as any fruit which doesn’t meet strict quality standards is used to generate renewable power in their award-winning anaerobic digester – the farm delivered 240 punnets of perfectly ripe strawberries to two local primary schools this week. Pupils and parents at Boxford CEVC Primary School and Stoke by Nayland C of E Primary School enjoyed the plump, sweet fruit at the end of the school day, with punnets handed out to anyone who wanted them from tables set up at the school gates – in keeping with ongoing considerations regarding hands, face and space. “It’s wonderful to see children back at school and returning to some kind of normality after the disruption they’ve had to endure over the past 18 months. Since its launch in 2015, nearly 1200 cyclists have signed up and completed Hadleigh Cycling Club’s cycle sportive, the Gayford Flyer. One participant commented: “The route this year was fantastic! A bit challenging with all the hills in the second half:) and therefore even more rewarding. It was such fun to be able to do an organised ride again. Especially on such a beautiful day. Thanks to all the volunteers and the organisation for putting all the time and effort in.” The Club relies on a large team of volunteers who sign and marshal the route and register riders. This year’s sportive had the backing of a host of sponsors and supporters including: The George PH, Crockatt Garage, Sunny Day Cycleworks, East of England Co-op, M Chisnall & Sons, Boxford Bike Club, The Pedal House and Hadleigh Hares. Riders rode a figure of 8 route, north and south of the town, in keeping with the Club’s “keep it local” approach. Details of the route and other quiet lanes close to Hadleigh can be found on the Club’s website. The Club’s Summer of Cycling Sessions at Northern Gateway, Colchester proved very popular with juniors and adults and the contributions of Benson, Simon, Roger and Perrie were noted by the Committee. The Club runs social rides on Sundays which usually begin at 8am (average speed 15mph) and 9.00/9.30am (12/13mph) from The George and there is a café stop. Babergh and Mid Suffolk are the first rural UK councils to switch their fleet to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) – slashing carbon emissions by up to 90% and supporting the councils’ carbon neutral aims. Starting from mid September, the councils’ waste fleet has begun its transfer over to HVO. Its 35 waste lorries are the first to transfer, and will be followed by its smaller public realm and housing services vehicles. By ditching diesel, they will see a significant reduction in pollutant emissions from their fleet*, with up to a 90% reduction in CO2. It will also support a circular economy, as the certified sustainable HVO fuel** is solely produced from waste cooking oil. The move was approved by the councils’ cabinets in January this year, and forms a major step in their Carbon Reduction Management Plan, which sets out how net zero carbon emissions aim to be achieved by 2030. Before HVO, the fleet represented just over a quarter (26%) of the councils' total CO2 emissions, approximately 880 tonnes per year – which will now reduce immediately. Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, cabinet member for environment at Babergh District Council, said: “This is an exciting moment and a major step forward in achieving the council’s ambitions as set out in our Carbon Reduction Management Plan. Our fleet and crews enable us to carry out some of our most visible work such as collecting your bin. With HVO, we are dramatically reducing our council’s total emissions by just over a quarter, and working towards Babergh’s greener, brighter and healthy future. Furthermore, I am immensely proud that we are among the first rural councils to take this leap into carbon reduction.” Cllr Jessica Fleming, cabinet member for environment at Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “Helping to create bright and healthy futures for the next generation, while protecting the environment, is one of our most important jobs. Moving to a greener and cleaner fuel like HVO, brings us significantly and immediately closer to achieving our ambition to be net zero carbon by 2030. While we can’t create a cleaner and healthier environment on our own - we hope that by being one of the first rural UK councils, along with Babergh, to move our fleet to HVO, we can lead by example with others encouraged to follow.” HVO fuel provided the councils with a near-immediate and efficient way to reduce emissions. This is because, aside from slightly increased fuel costs and new tanks, the transition from traditional diesel fuel to HVO requires minimal changes to the councils’ existing fleet. The new fuel will cost between 10-15% more than using conventional diesel. However, by using HVO, lower maintenance costs and longer engine life for the vehicles are expected.
