2021 a challenging year for the Hadleigh Boxford Group Practice The past year was a challenging time for all of us at Hadleigh Boxford Group Practice but the whole team have pulled together in these difficult times, and we have been so well supported by the community and our PPG. You will all be aware of the Covid clinics that have been the stand-out achievement and a massive 24,000 Covid vaccines have been delivered in the surgery, and more recently St Mary’s Church. In addition to this are the hundreds of vaccines delivered by our team of mobile jabbers to the residence and staff at the four care homes we look after and the numerous house-bound patients too. Many of those delivering the vaccines are our retired nurses and doctors, and we are indebted to them for their incredible support.

None of the vaccination clinics would have been the huge success they were without the army of PPG volunteers that have been out in force come rain, gales and even snow! They have worked so hard to support us and the community and we are extremely grateful to every single volunteer. It has been a herculean effort from everyone at the surgery that, despite all the Covid disruption, the Covid vaccinations, the isolations, and lockdowns we have also delivered nearly 5,000 flu vaccines and remained open seeing patients throughout the pandemic. We are all aware that the demand on GP surgeries in England has steadily climbed over these last 12 months and we have felt it here too. We have worked tirelessly to do our best to meet this demand including adapting our working pattern, incorporating more technology to support us in delivering care and recruited 12 new people to our team. Although we have sadly had to say goodbye to some staff that have left, we have grown in numbers at the surgery. We are proud to have 3 more receptionists, extra secretarial and data team personnel, as well as an additional doctor and nurse.

Our hope for 2022 is to continue to provide high quality care, while being responsive to the shifting landscape of the NHS. We will remain approachable and accessible to all our patients, and above all, our hope is to have Covid gone!

From the Spring of 2022, under current government plans, separating married couples will be able to divorce without one party having to allege fault. The timescales for divorcing a spouse and the ability for one spouse to obstruct a divorce will also change.

Currently, for a couple to divorce, one person is required to accept responsibility for the relationship breaking down. Or, if neither person is willing to accept responsibility, they must be separated for a period of two years (where both individuals agree to the divorce) or five years (where one spouse does not agree to the divorce). Other than in the event of extended separation, this means one party accepting that they have committed adultery, behaved unreasonably, or have disserted the other.

For many years campaigners have demanded changes to divorce law, recognising that many couples simply drift apart; that no one party is to blame for the relationship breaking down, or that both spouses mutually and amicably want to separate.

From April 2022, under current plans, divorcing couples will not be required to apportion blame or wait a period of two or five years of separation to pass to be able to commence divorce proceedings. Under the proposed changes, couples will be able to apply for a divorce simply because their marriage has broken down, paving the way for a mutually agreed and amicable divorce process.

In situations where the divorce is not amicable or mutually agreed, proposed new legislation will also remove the ability for one spouse to prevent the other from divorcing them and in these and other cases will provide for reducing the time it takes to formally divorce, compared to current legislation.

Dissolution Notice Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance It is with great sadness that the Executive for the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance issues this dissolution notice effective 1st January 2022. The HDAA was the first town in Suffolk to be formally recognised as working to become a dementia friendly community in 2014. Great work has been completed by many volunteers and community groups during this time which has been greatly appreciated and thank you all for your support. The terms of reference for the group allow for dissolution and the Executive have agreed to split all remaining funds between the Abbeycroft Leisure Together Tuesday programme and Ansell Centre Charity - Ansell Memories Café programme to ensure funds are spent for the support of those living with Dementia in our community.

Once upon a time, two little dogs named Gypsy and Sam arrived at SESAW. Years passed, Gypsy became arthritic and the volunteers despaired of them ever being rehomed because the duo disliked all other dogs.

Fortunately, the reprobates won the heart of one lady who succumbed to their dubious charms. The two little girls did go for the ball when Rachel took them home to play with her dogs including one that was equally reactive to other mutts. She also gave Gypsy a new lease of life with a set of Winston's Wheels which enabled her to walk, run and frolic with the pack.

Hadleigh Town Council Update on Layham Road Sports Ground Regular readers of the Hadleigh Community News may recall it was a year ago that I gave you an update on the vision and project plans for the Layham Road Sports Ground.

So what has been achieved in 2021?

1. Architects have completed our plans for a full size 3G pitch located at the Layham Road Sports Ground.

2. Architects have prepared draft plans for the new sports pavilion.

3. You can view these plans on the Town Council’s website https://hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk/major-projects/layham-road-sports-groundpavilion-agp/ 4. We have completed a Program of Use based upon the needs of Hadleigh Football and Rugby Clubs and other local clubs and organisations who have already registered their interest in using the new facilities. The Programme of Use indicates full utilisation of the 3G can be expected on weekday evenings and at weekends. Members of the public and other organisations will be able to register their interest in using the facilities at other times.

5. In preparation for the demolition of the old pavilion that was damaged by fire in 2020 we have put in place temporary changing rooms, a shower unit and toilets to allow the Rugby and Football clubs and the public to continue to use the Layham Road Grounds whilst the new facilities are developed. We are very grateful and thank the Hadleigh Scouts leaders for granting the Town Council permission to locate the temporary units on their land.

6. We have made the old pavilion building safe and ready for demolition and installed a new power distribution unit in readiness to feed the new facilities.

7. We are currently in the process of estimating the costs for our plans and the Layham Road Sports Ground Sub Committee will be reviewing these estimates early next year.

2022 Next steps: • Hold a public exhibition of the plans.

• Submit Planning Applications.

• Complete the Business Case.

• Obtain quotations for the management of the new facilities.

• Submit Grant applications to various organisations with a view to securing 85% funding.

As you can see steady progress has been made in 2021 and 2022 will be the decisive year to establish that we can deliver our vision to the Hadleigh Community.

Happy New Year from The Cock Inn Happy new year folks. As I write this post it’s about 10 days before xmas and just an hour prior to Borris’ Cobra meeting at No 10 to discuss Omicron. Fingers crossed but let’s hope there is not another ‘lockdown’ or severe restrictions that make pub life uneconomical. My fear is that while we need to keep safe and we are yet to understand the full consequence of this new variant, the government may not be able to afford more closures within hospitality, so may well hang us out to dry with severe onerous restrictions. Let’s see. By the time you read this we will know of the outcome. If you read this edition in the bar, things turned out ok. If you are stuck at home, well things turned out differently..

January is a good time to start new hobbies and interest and to think about resolutions. One could be to take advantage of our range of cask conditioned ales.

This is what we call real ale. It’s different to ‘keg’ beers and of course very different to lagers, which so many people drink.

Cask ale is delivered in a barrel (normally made of aluminum now and not wood as in days gone by) and is still brewing whilst inside. When we receive the barrel we need to treat it like a new born baby and it has to be stored at the correct temperature. Too warm and the beer deteriorates quickly. Too cold and the ale loses taste and becomes hazy.. It needs constant attention. The barrel is placed on its side in a rack and left to settle for a day or two. We then tap in a soft wooden spile. This allows the Co2 to start to escape, to be replaced by air, starting the secondary fermentation process. After approx. two days of fermentation we then hammer in a tap, which serves as an outlet for the ale once ready for serving, normally the day after the tap was inserted. So, some five days later the ale is ready to serve from a cellar kept at a constant temperature of c12 degrees. A clean cool glass and the hands of a skilled person on the bar will deliver the perfect pint! Simple eh.

The Cock Inn has a great name here in Hadleigh for quality cask ales and a super range which has recently been expended. We always have five ales available and sometimes six at weekends. That’s a super choice and the largest selection in the town. We frequently offer ales from local and national small and large brewers, including Fullers of London, St Austell of Cornwall, Mauldons of Suffolk, Nethergates of Lavenham, Belhaven, Scotland’s oldest brewer, Brains of Wales and even Abbot from nearby Bury St Edmunds. Popular ales such as Spitfire, Trelawny, ESB, Bass, Old Peculiar, Brewers Gold, Black Sheep and Black Adder are all coming soon. Oh…and if you want to suggest a favourite of your own, feel free to tell us. We will do our best to help.

The Stour Valley’s Spanish food shop: ‘sibarita’ attracted great interest at the Hadleigh Christmas Fayre Sibarita, Spain’s Organic Larder, participated, in the Hadleigh Christmas Fayre on Saturday, 4th December which, after a worryingly wet morning, turned bright and dry in time for the Fayre. Sibarita’s stall had a constant stream of visitors: a number of them had seen Sibarita’s adverts in our community magazines and made a beeline to the stall to meet Operations Manager, Jack Footitt. Jack was joined at the stall by Ed Martin, an experienced Chef, well known in the area. Ed’s enthusiasm, experience and practical product knowledge helped create a great deal of interest in the products displayed.

We have written previously about health benefits of Sibarita’s wide range of Pulses: beans, chickpeas and lentils. As with many of Sibarita’s products, they go a long way to meeting the needs of vegetarians and vegans. However, Covid has highlighted the risks associated with low levels of zinc which can affect the body’s immune system, increasing the risk of dangerous infections, such as pneumonia. Come and Join HEAT in 2022 The weather may be cold but no one disputes that the climate is heating up and wildlife is suffering. Sometimes it feels as if there is so much to do yet so little time left. So Hadleigh Environmental Action Team (HEAT) is gearing up for a year of activities, events, campaigns and projects. We had an busy 2021 despite the restrictions of Covid and today we can celebrate having over 70 members and lots of great projects led by people with energy and enthusiasm.

If you want to do something about the climate crisis and help the environment HEAT will have lots of things for you to choose from. You can join our river monitoring group and learn how to identify invertebrates, test for chemicals and find out how healthy our river Brett really is.

Alternatively, you can be part of the Plastic Free Hadleigh campaign to reduce single use plastics in businesses and community groups, help out with sustainable gardening on the HEAT allotment or join our team of volunteers doing conservation work in Hadleigh’s nature reserves. We will also have wildlife activities for young and old as well as speakers to listen to and visits to go on.

Watch this space! HEAT will be stepping up its activities in 2022 keeping our focus on local change and working with the people of Hadleigh. Sometimes it feels as if the challenges the Earth faces are too enormous for individuals and local groups to make a difference. We believe that all change, however small, when added together can make a difference. Interested?

Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School Christmas Nativity On two afternoons in December the children from Early Years and Key Stage 1 performed "We are going on a baby hunt" to parents in school. For many of the children this was their first performance of any kind to a live audience, but they sang and performed wonderfully well. Their rendition of The Camel Song had everyone smiling and joining in.

Greatest Black Britain's competition We were also pleased to hear that after entering each class into the national 100 Greatest Black Britain's competition, Ruby class has been declared as a winner from over 1500 entries. The children completed a project about the life and work of Mary Seacole.

This competition and the work based around it has further inspired the whole school to request looking at this subject again. It has also formed part of the motivation to continue to fully embed cultural diversity into all areas of our curriculum in school.

Victorian Day - Diamond Class Year 5 and 6 experienced an immersive day to understand more about life as a Victorian child. They definitely agreed that school was much tougher then, than it is today.

They took part in activities such as chanting times tables, handwriting and learning to recite latin phrases. However they enjoyed it so much that we were asked to keep their tables in rows for some subjects - which certainly wasn't the outcome we expected!

Award winning hearing specialists relocate in Hadleigh Local award-winning hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre are relocating to brand-new premises in Hadleigh this January.

The clinic which has been housed within Health By Design in Hadleigh High Street and more recently at a temporary home within Kersey Mill, is opening its own bespoke practice located at Stone Street Court, next to Hadleigh Bowls Club.

The new practice which is set amongst beautiful quiet countryside, offers modern and comfortable facilities all on ground floor level and plentiful free onsite parking.

The Hearing Care Centre, which has won many top awards for the customer service it provides its patients, will continue to hold hearing care weekly clinics in Hadleigh, providing hearing assessments, fitting of the latest hearing aid technology, as well as specialist advice and support for those experiencing hearing loss.

Hadleigh Walkers A complete change of venue for January’s walk on Saturday 8th. We tried this route West of Lavenham a few years ago in rather foul weather and had virtually no takers. This is a very pleasant walk and takes in an area where we don’t usually walk – so we’re trying again.

We will meet at the car park next to the Cock Horse pub opposite Lavenham church at 0930. The walk is about 8.5 miles and takes in Balsdon Hall Farm, Alder Carr, Bridge Street, Alpheton, Clapstile Farm and then the St Edmunds Way finishing up at Lavenham Church in time for a beverage at the pub at around 1300.

If anyone is in need of a lift to Lavenham please email us and we will do our best to help.

At the time of writing this announcement we have just completed a recce of the walk and one stretch of about 50m is flooded and very difficult to get through.

Therefore, we will have an alternative (starting at the same time and place) planned out just in case Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site.

Not only have parents shown understanding and flexibility in changing procedures, changing times of training sessions and lift sharing to ease congestion in the car park you also overwhelmed us at the end of term with some really thoughtful Christmas gifts. Last term several of our young coaches attended and passed their first official BG coaching course and they are all doing extremely well putting the skills learnt into practice. Our squad gymnasts have been working hard on routines for the February County Grades Competition. With over 20 girls competing for the first time, we are keeping our fingers crossed that it goes ahead and wish them all luck. Our parent toddler sessions run in the mornings every Tuesday through to Friday.

King Guthrum Group formed in Hadleigh

The formation of the King Guthrum Group has been announced, to promote the heritage link between Hadleigh, Suffolk and King Guthrum. The aim is to make people more aware of the town’s link to this historically significant figure, to ensure Hadleigh’s local heritage is better understood and appreciated, and to help promote tourism to the town, as well as helping the local economy.

The King Guthrum Group has applied to the Charity Commission for Charitable Incorporated Organisation status.

The King Guthrum Group will seek to raise funds to support activities such as public events, education, tourism, historical research and publications, community engagement, and to foster links with other locations and organisations associated with King Guthrum, his life and times. A memorial or statue for the town may also be considered as a possibility.

Guthrum (c.835 - c.890) was King of East Anglia in the late 9th century. According to chronicle, and later tradition, King Guthrum is buried in Hadleigh, Suffolk. He is the first person associated with the town to be named in historical records.

The King Guthrum Group hopes to make a positive impact on the town’s appreciation of its heritage, the local economy, and give the people of Hadleigh something to enjoy in challenging times.

The King Guthrum Group consists of a small number of trustees and is seeking help and support from other individuals and groups. Huw Roberts, Chair of The King Guthrum Group said: “We welcome contact from people with all sorts of skills and interests: running events and attractions, fund raising, engaging with schools and education, design and production of posters, leaflets, website and video production, art, community engagement, communication, an interest in history and culture. Supporting the Group will not take up too much time, and even if you don’t have specific skills, you can contribute the most important thing: enthusiasm!”

2 Report Of The Last Meeting. Agreed with an amendment to Tidy Town read out.

Matters Arising 2.1 No matters had been raised since the last meeting that needed reporting to Richard Baldwin (BDC).

2.2 The Hadleigh Deanery Tower meeting has had to be postponed until January 2022.

3 Standard Updates 3.1 Hadleigh Town Council HTC’s report had been circulated prior to the meeting. Cheryl explained the Loyalty Card scheme had been sponsored for the past six months by HTC, as agreed, with financial sponsorship from the Hadleigh Thrift Shop and sadly, no business had come forward to continue with the initiative. The Christmas Shopping and Lighting Up event on 4 December had been a great success and was very well attended despite the weather. Congratulations were offered for excellent organisation.

3.2 Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council No-one in attendance. Report received and circulated prior to the meeting. Under “Innovate Local Market Stalls) it read that “…new businesses were offered a free pilot pitch and equipment for a set time…” This needed clarifying as it is ambiguous. Stallholders need to provide their own stalls/gazebos.

3.3 Visit Hadleigh: snowdonjane@hotmail.co.uk Visitor Services: Following visits to other wool towns (Clare, Sudbury, Lavenham & Long Melford) guided walks and other events will be promoted through the medium of Visitor Services. A location for Visitor Centre in Hadleigh is still required – preferably in the High Street or appropriate historic building, to open four days a week. A good amount of display stock has been built up which needs to be housed in a warm, dry space. www.visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk. 3.4 Tidy Town Email: ourtidytown@gmail.com The team picked following the Christmas Lighting Up Event on 4 December and were pleased that all bins had been used and there was relatively little mess.

Elaine has been in touch with the High School who are running the Duke of Edinburgh Award course and has asked if a student undertaking the course would like to come and speak at an HCF meeting in 2022.

3.5 Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group www.hadleighhealth.co.uk. The PPG is now back to full strength of 12 members, including a Doctor from the practice and the Practice Manager, meeting once a month. Their main focus has been on assisting the practice with Covid vaccinations and boosters and this will continue for as long as is required. To date, some 25,000 vaccinations have taken place with more sessions planned for 20, and 22 December and, if required 23rd. These will be by invitation only. They are hugely grateful to all the wonderful volunteers who are committed, reliable and indispensable. The PPG assisted with the recent Patient Survey which will identify areas for improvement. Four paintings have been sold from their in-house art exhibition with the proceeds going to the Practice’s charity. The needs of the town’s younger people are being addressed in conjunction with the Porch Project and other organisations.

3.6 St Marys Church stmaryshadleigh.co.uk Current external works are coming to a conclusion and the top layer of scaffolding has been removed. The rainwater gutter around the base of the spire - the first ever to be used – is now visible and bat boxes and swift boxes have been put in place. The new windows are in place in the Vestry and new decorative security bars and safety rails at the top of the spiral staircase will hopefully be in place in the New Year. This will give the church a safe and secure area for the first time.

With the flexibility of chairs we have been able to turn around the church from a place of worship to a covid vaccination centre (and vice versa) in around 40 minutes. It is a pleasure to be able to service our community in this most appropriate way. Through use of our church, over 5,000 vaccinations have been made. Without St Mary’s this would simply not have been possible.

There are still those who deem the church “not a proper church without pews” but these comments are mainly from people who never come into church. The diseased ash tree in the churchyard has been removed and it is suggested it be replaced with a mulberry tree. The Lime Tree Project (saving and displaying a slice from the base of the tree with its historical timeline) is taking a slightly different turn. Plans are advancing and it is hoped to have something rather special to offer our community in Spring.

4 AOB 4.1 Lorry Routes: There is a concerted campaign, by petition, to have current sat nav routes changed and designated no-through routes. After a final name check by HTC, it is expected that over 200 signatures will have been received. Primarily, this affects Lady Lane, Angel Street, High Street, Bridge Street, Gallows Hill and, of course, Benton Street. (it will not affect deliveries to premises). Everyone approached on these streets was keen to add their name. Hopefully this petition will go to full Council this week and, if approved, will go to Suffolk County Council Highways.

Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson Hadleigh North Ward and Cabinet Member for Environment Dear Residents, I trust that you have all had an enjoyable Christmas with your families and looking forward to a better year ahead.

The Christmas period gave me time to reflect on the importance of friends and consider family members that we have all lost, and who created lasting and long memories that brought great comfort during those very difficult times we have all had to endure in the last year. My thoughts have been with you all over this festive period.

Looking ahead, I am working on what I can do to influence and improve the local environment, to make it prosperous, safe and enjoyable for all. In the October HCN, Mr Bobby Gale wrote ‘arriving in Hadleigh, you thought you had entered a run down, poor economically depressed backwater that had lost investment and interest in its appearance’.

As the now appointed Cabinet Member for Environment, I hope that I can endeavour to address his issues. We rely upon all residents as ‘Our eyes and Ears’. We welcome emails advising of specific areas where we can focus our efforts on the mess in our streets and general untidiness. Each month, I attend the ‘Tool Box Talk’ with my team. All the Public Realm Team meet at the Stowmarket Depot at 7am to discuss specific items prior to starting their rounds. It is a chance also for me to thank the team for their dedicated service and seek out individuals who have exceeded expectations and gone beyond the call of duty. Our team take pride in what they do for our community and so please, if you see them, those four words that mean so much, but cost so little, Please Thank The Team.

Hadleigh progress: • All banners without planning permission on the High Street car park railings have been removed and hedges cut.

• All banners on the bypass and hanging from trees without permission will also be removed due to the distraction to drivers.

• Pay and Display machines for Hadleigh ordered and arrive Jan, installation expected February 2022.

• 1248 survey responses to the Parking Consultation to analyse.

• Hand over 101 Tree for Left Trees to parents and children.

• The Waste fleet has commenced using hydro treated vegetable fuel in Hadleigh.

• Applied to Forestry Commission Local Authority Treescapes Fund for 60 trees at Broom Hill.

• Successful in securing funding of £20K from the Waste and Resources Action Programme to support a litter and fly-tipping campaign and purchasing solar bins. I plan to instigate a Saturday morning Community Collection to assist in resolving the fly-tipping issue and pay for this from my Locality Budget. This will take place in early Spring. I welcome specific area requests please??

• The winter schedule Grounds team will visit all areas on the current grass schedules to crown lift trees that have been problematic during the mowing season.

• All our hedges and ditches in and around Hadleigh should have been completed by December 31st.

• In January we shall commence in ongoing repair and maintenance of play areas and fencing.

• Finally, we have purchased a pavement sweeping vehicle which I have requested to come to Hadleigh soonest to cleanse the High Street and all roads adjoining in the first instance.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As we face a new variant of Covid that is now apparent able to spread around society at a much greater pace than its predecessor, it is essential that everyone gets boosted. A total mobilisation of booster vaccine capability is required, driven by the PM from the centre and with all of us playing our part by getting boosted and encouraging everyone we know to do the same.

The Prime Minister has therefore announced an Emergency Boost appeal to get all eligible adults boosted by the end of December, and I would strongly encourage all of my constituents to either attend walk-in vaccination centres or book their jab as soon as possible. Inevitably, trying to deliver such a scale of jabs will come with friction and strain.

But we have already made great strides boosting the most vulnerable, and we should not underestimate the progress we have made, particularly locally.

Nevertheless, the NHS will need to match its best vaccination day and then beat it day on day. To achieve this, some appointments may need to be postponed and 42 military planning teams will be deployed across every region, setting up additional vaccine sites and mobile units, extending opening hours so clinics are open 7 days a week.

I recently had my own booster jab at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. The experience was very professionally and painlessly delivered, and I pay tribute to the NHS staff and volunteers on site doing their bit in the battle to beat Omicron.

In these worrying times it can be difficult to forget just how far we have come in our fight against this deadly virus. The good news is that we now have so much more resistance from the vaccine to aid our fight, especially when it’s topped up by the booster.

Brendan Mann Carolyn Mann and family would like to thank everyone for their care, love, kind messages, cards, flowers, help and the amazing amount of people that attending Brendan's funeral in September, we were overwhelmed. Hadleigh & District Gardening Club It was with regret the gardening club decided to cancel our December meeting. The rising Covid infection rates made us consider the safety of our members. We hope you managed to celebrate the festivities in some way.

During the Covid lockdowns many people discovered the benefits to their mental and physical health of being in the countryside.

At Orchard Barn we have always believed that our own health is interconnected with the health of the environment, and whether we are working with wood, gardening or maintaining our site, we work with nature using only traditional low-tech methods and hand tools. A pilot scheme to support small businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk has been hailed a success as it reaches its six-month milestone Since its launch in July 2021, the Innovate Local initiative has supported 11 small businesses by providing a free pitch at either Stowmarket or Hadleigh markets for up to four weeks.

In addition to a regular spot on the market, business owners were offered support to run a safe and successful stall, mentoring, business advice and training opportunities both before and after the pilot to help them maximise the opportunity.

Feedback from the traders who have taken part in the scheme has been overwhelming positive with several investing in their own equipment to use on the market or other events. Following the initial success of the pilot, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are investigating ways to expand the Innovate Local scheme during 2022.

Kelly Clark runs Apothekelly Skincare and is currently benefiting from Christmas shoppers visiting Hadleigh market. She spoke about being involved in the pilot Innovate Local scheme: “Meeting real customers face to face has been invaluable to my business, and I am so glad I decided to go ahead with the Innovate Local scheme and really feel that I am taking my business in the right direction.

“Not only has my business got off to the best start possible, it has also given me the confidence to know how good my products are and how they have been received by the public first hand.”

The Innovate Local scheme is part of a programme of activity to support high streets in the Districts post Covid-19.

Commenting on the success in Hadleigh, Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council cabinet member for economic growth said: “It has been really rewarding to see local start-up businesses benefiting from the experience of being on a busy market and engaging with customers. It can be daunting to try and launch a new business, even before the impact of a pandemic, so I am delighted that the feedback from traders involved in the Innovate Local scheme has been so positive with many feeling more confident to take their business to the next stage.”

The Innovate Local scheme is open to businesses that have been operating for less than a year and do not currently have a place on a market.

As part of the Innovate Local Initiative, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils will also be opening an innovation hub in Eye and a pop-up hub in Sudbury later this year.

Town Mayor’s Update How lucky we were for our Hadleigh Christmas event on 4 December – the weather was fine if very cold, for a start, but I don’t think people minded that, and meanwhile in Chelmsford, not that far away, it was bucketing. That would have cast a real blight! And the Omicron variant of the coronavirus was not yet on the scene either. It was such a joy to see a real Christmas event, carols in the Marketplace, the High Street closed and lined with stalls, so many of our own shops open late, and a special joy to see so many families with young children.

The festival of Christmas is paralleled in many other cultures as a bright moment in the long, dark nights of the end of the year, and we need that particularly strongly right now as the pandemic grinds on.

It looks like 2022 will be dawning in a way we had all fervently hoped we would not see again, as I write this on 17 December. Let’s look forward, though, to a year that, all being well, remains full of promise - the return of the May Show will be close to all our hearts, and then two weeks later there is the nationwide celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, a landmark no previous monarch has ever achieved.

These two big events are framed within the longer Festival of Suffolk, which I have written about before, and this all starts some 6 months from now, so there is every reason to hope that it will all go ahead as planned. It is by keeping these things in mind that we can soldier on, even if for some of the meantime things are grim.

We shouldn’t forget though that the previous waves revealed an astonishing community spirit in Hadleigh, a feeling that we were all in this together and that through shared effort we could help everyone here come through the ordeal – and it was so successfully done that we emerged a more cohesive and a kinder place.

That change has, it must be said, had some of the shine rubbed off it, but I am in no doubt that it will reappear if things do become tough again, as I deeply hope they will not.

So no matter what happens, let’s remember the happiness so many of us shared that Saturday, the fun we can look forward to in the summer, and the sense of community with which we have overcome previous hardships. We are lucky enough to live in a town that, while it certainly has a few problems, is unusually blessed compared to so many others, and which – as we have already seen – can surmount those problems and become an even better place to live for everyone here, of whatever age.

So may I wish you all a New Year that, however it may begin, brings you happiness and Hadleighness, a word I just invented for the unique virtues of our town, Frank Minns Town Mayor

Picture of the month Corn milling was one of the notable industries of Hadleigh in past years, both wind or by watermills. One of these mills, a water mill, was located in Bridge Street on the right-hand side immediately before the Iron Bridge. The various channels dug out to control the river water flow can still be seen. This photograph shows the mill standing alongside the highway, and it would be difficult today to imagine a horse and waggon, or later a motor lorry standing on the slight bend in the road outside the mill with sacks of grain being hoisted upwards and into the mill ready for grinding. This was all long before the Hadleigh by-pass had been constructed.

The mill developed in size from 1830 when James Deeks was the owner of ‘Hadleigh Bridge, Water Mill’. John and Robert Deeks followed, but by 1888 Thomas Singleton was the new mill owner and he enlarged the mill and installed an alternative means of power, being steam, and a tall square brick chimney was a new addition to the Hadleigh skyline. Singleton was not at the mill for long and by 1898 the Cocksedge Brothers acquired the mill, and they expanded the business to include being Corn Merchants. Additionally, they also acquired the smock type windmill, known as Tower Mill at Tower Mill Lane at the top end of George Street.

The next owners, and known from 1925, was Daniel Alderton, and he further updated the power source with a suction gas system. Conveniently, the Hadleigh Gas Works and gasometers, were located on the opposite side of the road. The windmill at Tower Mill Lane had ceased working during the 1910’s, but Alderton was also owner of the Toppesfield Water Mill. After the Second World War, local milling was in decline; Toppesfield Mill was destroyed by fire in 1954 and three years later the Bridge Street Mill was demolished. This signalled an end of a long era of milling in Hadleigh extending since medieval times.

Parish Council The main matters discussed during the Parish Council meeting of 24 November were: • District Council report A request for enhanced support to assist with Covid had been submitted by Public Health Suffolk; Cllr Ward said hospitals were currently full, but coping. The additional funding was helping to increase the roll-out of boosters, as well as vaccinations for younger people. Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s Joint Local Plan had been submitted, but they had been asked to reconsider site allocations, which would mean the Plan would be unlikely to be re-submitted until early in 2023.

• Review of lorry routes in Suffolk It was agreed that the PC should respond to the consultation concerning the review of recommended lorry routes across the county. Councillors were concerned that weight limit signs continued to be ignored by a large number of lorries, and also highlighted the ongoing problems in Benton Street.

• Draft budget & precept for 2022-23 It was agreed unanimously to accept the recommendations from the working party and approve the draft budget.

• Speeding A flyer had been delivered to every household in Upper Layham asking for volunteers to help with moving the SID device; however, there had been no responses. There had been a request from a parishioner that another device should be considered for Stoke Road in Lower Layham; the working party would look into this. It was agreed that the Clerk would contact SCC about extending the speed limit on Stoke Road. A quantity of 30mph stickers for wheelie bins would be ordered.

• Green Team Cllr Woods would discuss the issue of the wood piles on the playing field with the Playing Field Committee. Climate Change would be an agenda item for the January meeting; in the meantime, parishioners would be asked to try to make at least one change.

• Queen’s Platinum Jubilee The report from the Events Community Group was noted; there would be regular updates in the HCN and via community emails.

• County Broadband The current broadband network used copper cables and was installed pre-internet; it was already at full capacity. County Broadband provided infrastructure to rural locations with fibre optic cables from the cabinet to individual households. The aim was to provide faster speeds and a more reliable network. To be kept up to date on the rollout of this project, parishioners could register their interest at www.countybroadband.co.uk/register.

• 2022 meeting dates The schedule of meetings for 2022 was agreed. The next meeting would be at 7.30pm on Wednesday 26 January 2022, in the Village Hall.

Combatting speeding in Layham The Parish Council has had some stickers made for your wheelie bins in a bid to encourage motorists to slow down! These are primarily for use on the 'main' roads in the village, rather than areas where they cannot be seen (eg the raised pavement in Mill Lane). They are probably not necessary on Brett Green either where it would be difficult to exceed 30mph. So, if you would like a sticker (or 2 or 3, depending on how many bins you have), please let Jane Cryer, our Parish Clerk know and they will be deliverd. We, however, urge you not to leave your stickered bins out all the time, just on collection days as usual. Apart from anything else, it's the element of surprise that counts!

Keeping Layham green Thank you to all those of you who continue to collect litter on a regular basis. Ryan Dodson deserves a special mention for the big difference he has made in Upper and Lower Layham in his work towards his Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Other improvements include the removal of Himalayan balsam near the playing field, the sweeping away of a blanket of conkers on Overbury Hall Road, clearing of vegetation from road signs, and the cleaning of the war memorial.

In the spring look out for the wild flowers, snow drops and daffodils that have been sown or planted on our verges by residents.

Parts of Brett Green and the wide verge at Blacksmith’s corner have been kept tidy by parishioners who live nearby, and the Playing Field Committee continue to provide us with a safe and attractive area for leisure activities.

Climate change has been one of several worrying issues that continues to be a growing concern as we move into 2022. Please play your part and make at least one change to help reduce your carbon footprint. We know that many of you will have already made a New Year’s resolution to this effect.

A good one is to make sure all aluminium drinks cans end up in the blue bin – they have a real value for recycling.

Guidance and financial support are available for a variety of green projects including the planting of trees – please let us know if you’d like more information.

again have our organised ‘clean up’ sessions, in the meantime please keep doing your bit to make Layham greener - thank you.

Layham Playing Field – New Year resolution The problem of dog fouling continues on what is primarily a children’s playground – let’s ask those who don’t always clear up after their dogs to resolve to do better in 2022. Thank you.

Layham Playgroup We had lots of fun in the run up to Christmas, completing lots of crafts and cooking yummy treats. Now, as we start a new year, we will be turning our attention to winter. We have already started to feed the birds, which we can watch from our windows eating the food we put out for them.

We also hope to make some soup for snack times to keep ourselves warm.

Dear Sir Our congratulations to Cllr Sian Dawson for stopping the myopic Babergh Cabinet decision to introduce car parking charges in Hadleigh when the current pandemic is still raging. The retail sector needs as much support as we can provide as it struggles with recovery, and anything that works against that never made sense. Babergh DC can comfortably manage the cost of supporting free parking within its overall budget and can do so for the foreseeable future.

However, car parking charges is only half of the problem. The next challenge is the provision of sufficient car parking to meet Hadleigh’s long term requirements.

The Babergh draft Joint Local Plan for Hadleigh shows that the Council is likely to approve the building of more than 700 houses between 2018 and 2037, just when the Council plans to give up a roughly 100 vehicle car park at Corks Lane for housing development. To do so is yet another example of non-joined up thinking by Babergh. It is likely that the building these 700 houses will lead to more than 1000 additional cars, that will require car parking provision in a town that is already at capacity. Babergh will claim that it needs to build four properties on the Corks Lane car park to make its development of the old Council buildings viable. That claim no longer holds water as its original anticipated costings for the development have been overtaken by significant increases in building materials to the point that they are meaningless. The trade-off of losing 100 car parking spaces to create just 4 houses never did make sense, and Babergh should now look at selling off the old Council offices to a developer which would in turn potentially allow for retention of the car park.

Babergh has been talking about a Hadleigh “Vision” for years, and it’s time that the talk was turned to action. Residents are tired of short term planning decisions and a good starting point for joined up vision in 2022 would be to look at how it can retain all three main car parks in Hadleigh, rather than give one up for a questionable return with no alternative solutions on offer.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre The fundraising committee has pulled off another brilliant result: the Christmas Raffle consisted of a whopping big hamper so full of goodies that the lid can’t shut (see the photo) and eleven runner-up prizes, raising over £1,000 for the Centre. Behind this effort is one of our coaches, Jan McKillop. Not only is she a coach, but chairman of Fundraising. Adapting to changing times because of the pandemic, the committee has continued to raise money to keep us lucky horses going. Thank you to the committee and to all the punters who bought the tickets. Here is a lovely photo of Jan teaching on the last Friday before Christmas.

Despite all the Friday helpers and riders watching the draw take place on 26th November, the hamper was won by a Wednesday volunteer from Bildeston. Congratulations, Amanda!

After 32 years the time has come to cure the leaks and remove the incumbents who have taken up residence above us. It will be an interesting operation for me to watch from my room. I bet the live horses and ponies will be astonished! The firm Chisnell’s is doing the work so we shall be in safe hands, they know us!

We are about to have a new webpage. Andrew Gourlay has kindly operated it for us over 20 years of pro bono work for which we are extremely grateful. Just as he began to want to retire, another wonderful person, Jennifer Price, offered to build us a new page that is compatible with phones, and has a great new look. It will be live before the new year. Have a look and see what’s looking good on there.

The yard was well decorated for Christmas. Our carol service in the stable yard was wonderful and Father Jo from Hadleigh blessed all the live ponies. Babs and I didn’t feel left out since we could watch everything that happened, and our room was used as ‘Wardrobe’ for the participants in the crib scene. We had lots of visitors.

Well, we pick up the gossip that a new form of Covid is on the march. We just want to say to all our humans attached to Shelley, be careful, look out for each other and keep smiling! We all want to see you back up here from 17th January.

A Merry Christmas from HCS Thank you to everyone who attended our Celebration of Christmas on Saturday 11 December at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh.

We hope you enjoyed our evening of carols and Christmas music as well as the mulled wine. Our retiring collection for Alzheimer’s Research UK raised £358.

In January our rehearsals begin in earnest for our spring concert on Saturday 2 April 2022, kindly sponsored by Matthew Douglas Limited. Our programme will include the work of American composer, Leonard Bernstein which is very exciting for the choir.

Bernstein is most well known for his musicals West Side Story and On The Town.

He was born to Russian immigrant parents in 1918 and began to play the piano aged 10. His parents weren’t supportive and he had to fund his own lessons for many years. He went on to study music at Harvard. His big break came when he was assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. On November 14, 1943, Bernstein was called at 9am because the guest conductor, the very prestigious Bruno Walter, had fallen ill and Bernstein was invited to take his place.

Bernstein shared a passion for both popular and classical music which bridged the two and made him popular to wider audiences. Our spring concert programme will include the Chichester Psalms, first performed in 1965. The Chichester Psalms are made up of three movements, quite challenging – sometimes very tender and in other parts, so dramatic.

Spring seems far away as we prepare for Christmas in the grip of the pandemic but we must continue to be positive and make plans that we can look forward to.

Bernstein has been in the headlines recently as the new release of West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg, opens to five star reviews. Many of us will be planning a trip to the cinema to see it, something to look forward to over the Christmas break and early new year.

Let’s hope that 2022 is full of music and singing with friends and family and our theatres, cinemas and music venues can continue to welcome audiences. In the meantime, on behalf of everyone at Hadleigh Choral Society, enjoy your Christmas, the magic and the music, and we look forward to seeing you in 2022.

We have been slowly returning back after the pandemic and are now able to welcome new members We are Phase Four of the Rehabilitation Pathway for Heart Patients and have two exercise sessions per morning to cater for all abilities.

We have professional staff on site, a Cardiac Nurse attends every week and is available for consultation and our instructors are all British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR) trained.

If you have had a heart attack or heart problems in the past or are a recent heart patient who needs a bit of extra support we would love to welcome you to come along for a tea/coffee and see what we do. Ansell Memories Cafe and Lunch Clubs We are pleased to report that both lunch clubs and the Memories Cafe were able to go ahead with their Christmas celebrations.

The Ansell Centre was well ventilated, guests and volunteers were required to wear masks when not seated and mixing between tables was discouraged.

Christmas Lunch Club As you can see from the photos, everyone had fun and we were able to put aside any worries for a little while as we enjoyed each other’s company. The Wednesday Lunch Club was pleased to welcome our district councillor, Kathryn Grandon.

The Memories Cafe re-opens on Thursday January 6th, and the lunch clubs on January 5th and January 21st.

Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Saturday 20th December saw the return of our Chocolate Bingo event. It was good to see so many regulars come along and join in the fun and we were able to raise over a thousand pounds for the Charity. A great night was had by all.

The final prize of a giant Hamper filled with all things Chocolate and fifty pounds cash was won by the lovely lady in the photograph. We were all so pleased as she had a false call, thinking she had won, but still had the number 65 on her card. Two numbers later up came 65 - hoorah! She DID win after all! Big thanks to everyone who helped on the night and to everyone for helping to us all to stay safe. Rumour has it that this was going to be the last of our Bingo events but am pleased to say we have decided that, with a few changes, we will be continuing so the next event will be the Easter Themed Bingo 2022! - watch out for details in the New Year.

We will be setting off to Ukraine on 5th December to deliver over 300 stockings to the Chernobyl Children. Many areas are now in lockdown but we are very hopeful that one way or the other we shall make sure all the children receive these gifts, even if the Covid situation means that we are not able to visit them personally as planned, our partners in Ukraine will work on our behalf to complete the program in time for Christmas. Many of you have sponsored the cost of delivering the stockings, thank you all so much for your support, we could not have done this without you. We will of course post updates of the visit in the Newsletters and our Facebook page.

We are now urgently looking for donations of Christmas stocking to replenish our much depleted stock as work will start on the program for next year immediately after Christmas. Previously we would have bought stockings in the January Sales but having had none for the last 2 years we do not have many on hand to go forward with.

School’s Out schemes support families through the Christmas holidays Hey Presto! Magic, circus skills, football, swimming, and outdoor cooking, are amongst the fun activities on offer from Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils and partners during the Christmas school holidays.

The councils are working with a range of partners to deliver the varied programme of activities to help families through the festive period as part of the Government’s holiday activities and food programme.

Abbeycroft Leisure and Explore Outdoor are once again offering outdoor cooking masterclasses to families in need during the school break in several locations across the districts – cementing the councils’ commitment to reducing health inequalities, as set out in their recently adopted Wellbeing Strategy.

Families are given the opportunity to learn how to cook a hearty and nutritious meal in the outdoors. In addition, they receive a free box of ingredients and recipe cards so they can prepare healthy, tasty food at home – supporting the councils’ ongoing ambition to combat holiday hunger.

There are also sessions for budding magicians and circus performers, free swims and lunch at a number of council leisure centres, football fun factories, arts and crafts sessions, sports days and even recording studio slots on offer for youngsters, with events at Stowmarket, Eye and Stradbroke in Mid Suffolk, and at Great Cornard, Sudbury, Hadleigh and Brantham in Babergh.

Although free places are allocated on a needs basis – with local schools identifying families in receipt of free school meals or eligible for other reasons – children not meeting this criteria are also welcome to participate in many of the events for a small cost.

Babergh’s cabinet member for Communities, Cllr Derek Davis, said: “As a parent myself, I know how hard it can be to entertain children during the school holidays, so I am delighted that our council continues to work closely with leisure providers to offer a range of activities to beat boredom and encourage everyone to lead fit and healthy lives. More importantly, we can make sure no child is hungry or lonely because of their family finances.”

Councils urge National Highways to ‘unblock Copdock’ Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have submitted a joint response to a consultation by National Highways on proposed improvements to the Copdock Interchange – urging the creation of a new link road to keep business traffic flowing freely.

The A14 junction 55 is a vital interchange for the region, linking the Port of Felixstowe with the Midlands and beyond via the M6 and M1, and Colchester, Chelmsford, London, the M25 and Stansted Airport to the south.

As part of an informal pre-application consultation on potential improvements to the junction, National Highways sought feedback on two possible options: either improving traffic flow by widening the existing carriageway and introducing left turn lanes, or slashing the volume of traffic using the junction by building a new link road for traffic travelling between the A12 (South) and A14 (East).

In their joint response, the councils back the new link road as the best way of tackling existing congestion and ensuring the efficient movement of goods from Freeport East, including Stowmarket’s Gateway 14 - helping to ensure national, regional, and local economic prosperity and delivering the greatest benefits to the districts’ communities and businesses.

However, of equal consideration to the councils is the environmental impact, with National Highways urged to ensure any proposals adequately address noise, light and air quality impacts on local residents, and align with Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ Biodiversity Action Plan – protecting and strengthening plant life and local wildlife in the districts.

Cllr Clive Arthey, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for Planning, said: “The efficient operation of the Copdock Interchange is key to ensuring the flow of goods and services is maintained across our region. Unimpeded traffic movement between Felixstowe and the London/South East region is essential for the prosperity of Suffolk and would allow us to take a further step towards an integrated sea, road and rail infrastructure network.

“In the meantime, any improvement to the junction that stops traffic taking alternative routes via Old London Road and London Road, and the villages south of the A14, will improve the quality of life of our residents in those areas.”

National Highways is now collating and analysing responses before producing a consultation report and presenting its chosen option to the Department for Transport for consideration for funding.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are working with town and parish councils across their districts this National Tree Week to plant nearly 5,000 trees and hedgerow plants, to help tackle biodiversity loss.

With tree planting season in full swing, nearly 300 locally sourced trees and over 4,600 hedgerow plants are being planted across Babergh and Mid Suffolk, thanks to a new local tree planting scheme launched in 2020.

The scheme forms part of the councils’ Biodiversity Action Plan, aiming to protect and strengthen the districts’ plant and wildlife for generations to come.

Last year, the councils put out a call to their towns and parishes to apply for free trees and hedgerow plants to plant on Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, Babergh their own publicly accessible land.

More than 20 successful applications District Council’s cabinet member for climate change were received, with some parishes applying to carry out more than one planting project. The largest projects include Coddenham, Monk Soham and Bedfield, Long Melford and Great Bricett.

The trees and plants, as well as stakes, guards and planting advice have been provided by the district councils. However, the town and parish councils will be responsible for maintaining the trees and hedges.

Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable transport, said: “Increasing the number of trees across our district is a vital part of tackling biodiversity loss and achieving the aims of our Biodiversity Action Plan. But, the council can’t increase it to the levels we need on our own. This is why we’re supporting our town and parish councils to work with us to ensure Babergh’s environment remains a place people are proud to live and work in for generations to come.”

Cllr Jessica Fleming, Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “This scheme is an important building block in the work already underway to increase the number of trees and plant life in Mid Suffolk. Upping our tree coverage across the district is an important part of our Biodiversity Action Plan, and we hope that by working with our towns and parishes we can have an even greater positive impact on the environment for our residents. We’d love to see even more parishes coming forward with their projects next year – big or small – to make Mid Suffolk a greener place we’re all proud to call home.”

The scheme is due to reopen for applications for 2022 planting schemes in the New Year. Guidance around eligibility Cllr Jessica Fleming, Mid Suffolk and how to apply will be sent out to all District Council’s cabinet member town and parish councils and posted on for environment the councils’ website. It builds on steps already taken by the councils to increase tree coverage in their patch, including: • gifting over 1000 trees to new parents through their Tree for Life scheme • successfully securing a share of £150k with other Suffolk councils to plant around 3,000 trees in the county. 200 of these will be located across Broom Hill in Hadleigh, Needham Lake in Needham Market, and Greens Meadow in Stowmarket and dedicated to the Queen’s Green Canopy in Suffolk, being coordinated by the Suffolk Lieutenancy • carrying out mapping of existing and potential wildlife corridors, as well as a survey of the districts’ current tree canopy The councils continue to engage with local town and parish councils to establish the most appropriate locations to plant wildflower meadows across the districts.

Sudbury & District Citizen’s Advice I’m a bit anxious about going out into shops at the moment so I want to do more shopping online, but there’s been things in the news about delivery problems. I'm worried about not receiving things on time or packages being lost. What should I do if my parcel goes missing?

When you’re online shopping, it’s not always clear whom to contact if things go wrong. As a customer, your contract is with the seller that you bought the item from. It’s the seller’s responsibility to make sure the item is delivered to you. They should chase the courier to find out what happened to your order if there’s a problem.

If your parcel hasn’t arrived: ● Check the delivery address you gave the seller, to make sure it’s correct. ● Then contact the seller and ask where your order is. ● If the seller claims they've delivered it or doesn't know where it is, you can ask for a redelivery. You might be able to get a refund in some circumstances where the delivery time was essential, and you let the seller know ahead of time.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, you can ask the seller to deliver the item to you again if the item wasn’t delivered either by an agreed date, or within a reasonable time - usually within 30 days.

If the new delivery fails to come within a reasonable time, you can ask the seller for a refund.

If your parcel was left somewhere: Another problem people face is when parcels get left in different places, for example outside or with a neighbour.

If your item was delivered by Royal Mail: If Royal Mail left your package with a neighbour or in a certain place because you told them to, it’s not the seller or Royal Mail’s responsibility if it gets lost.

If they leave it somewhere you hadn’t instructed, it’s the seller’s responsibility if it gets lost. You should contact the seller to ask for a redelivery or a refund.

If the item was delivered by a courier: Check your terms and conditions or account details - they might include other places for delivery, like your porch or a neighbour’s house. If you agreed to them, it’s not the seller’s or courier’s responsibility if your order has gone missing.

However, if you did not agree to this, then it’s the sellers responsibility if your order goes missing.

Hadleigh Art Club Activities We hope you had an enjoyable time over Christmas and the New Year. We resume our sessions on the 11th of January. We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those that ask, we try to give advice/guidance/constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'.

We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group...

We charge £3 per session to cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5, due in May. There is a list of weekly topics but these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current weeks) while others will be working on their own subject.

Here is the program for January: 11/01/2022 - Birds on a bird feeder/table - you may have been feeding them recently and have your own photos - or have Christmas cards with similar pictures 18/01/2022 - Children playing games. How about a snowball fight, or building a snowman?

25/01/2022 - Onions, shallots, garlic bulbs - these can make very good pictures.

01/02/2022 - Mists and misty scenes; for example, mist over water at dawn.

Following the death of family members to Alzheimers and being a keen walker I decided to walk for the Alzheimer’s UK charity.

A Christmas present challenge from my wife Linda led to a Lands End to John O’Groats walk! Due to a few diversions the distance to be achieved is 1083 miles.

I also set a personal target of £1000 to be raised. To date I have already passed this mark due to peoples kindness and generosity. Thank you so much to everyone who has helped me raise this sum of money.

Helen Rollason Cancer Charity Merry Christmas Market came to Trinity Park, Ipswich raising over £24,000!

Shoppers flocked to Trinity Park Ipswich on Saturday 4th December for the very first Helen Rollason Cancer Charity Christmas Market raising over £24,000 for the charity!

Funds raised will enable the charity to provide complimentary therapy treatments to 960 clients, helping us to enable quality of life while living with cancer. Showcasing over 90 small businesses from across the region, the market had an exciting variety of high-quality, unique gifts, decorations, crafts and festive foods to get guests in the Christmas spirit at Trinity Park in Ipswich (home of the Suffolk Show). The venue lent itself to a large wellventilated undercover barn space to protect buyers and sellers from the cold conditions while guests wrapped up warm against the Winter weather.

Alongside the shopping stands, there was a range of food and drink stalls, serving up alcoholic beverages including festive hot drinks and mulled wine. Santa was due to make an appearance but sadly Mrs Claus was taken ill – we wish her better soon. There were smiles all round with games including name the bear, tombola and raffle with the chance to win £250!

Karen Mitchell, Community Fundraiser for Helen Rollason Cancer Charity said: “We’ve been absolutely blown away by the amount of visitors that we’ve had at our Christmas Market – incredible for our first event! We’ve already received some fantastic feedback about the quality and variety of products on sale and everyone’s been really impressed with the food and drink on offer.

We need to raise almost £900,000 a year to provide our services so this event has helped us achieve that considerably.

It’s been wonderful to see so many people coming out to show their support.

Thank you to all our fantastic volunteers involved in planning, setting up, clearing away, our stallholders and everyone who attended the event, spent money or donated to the charity.

Helen Rollason Cancer Charity is dedicated to supporting people whose lives are touched by cancer. Our Support Centres offer a range of complementary therapies to patients in an environment of peace and tranquillity, including counselling, reflexology, aromatherapy, manual lymphatic drainage and support groups.

We support men and women with all types of cancer at all stages – whether newly diagnosed or longer-term, throughout treatment and after treatment is completed.

We rely on donations, fundraising and money raised through our charity shops to continue operating our Support Centres.”

Stoke by Nayland Golf Thursday 2nd December - On a very cold breezy Thursday the hardy Stoke By Nayland Ladies went out to play an 18 hole Stableford on the Gainsborough course. Katie Clark came in with the winning score of 32pts followed by Elaine Harris with 27pts and Angela Cudmore with 26pts.

Saturday 4th December - After a very wet start to Saturday morning the weekend ladies played their 18 hole Stableford competition on an absolutely sodden Gainsborough course. The rain stopped and the sun came out just as the ladies started their competition, they played in warm sunshine for the whole round obviously suiting Jo Little’s game who scored 42pts, playing her best round of the year. Her playing partners said it was “like a Masterclass in how to play golf!” Katie Clark was in 2nd place with 29pts. Elaine Harris 3rd with 26pts.

On Saturday 4th December Richard Allen, previous Men’s Captain of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, presented Nikki Goodman from Ferriers Barn Day Centre with a cheque for £310.06 from money raised in the Ferriers Barn Trophy held in May each year. This year’s trophy was won by the pairing of Matt King and Greg Smith. Ferriers Barn is located just outside Bures and provides a Day Centre for adults with disabilities. The money raised will be invaluable to the centre in providing the service that it provides.

Some 52 players took part in the annual Yuletide Scramble on Monday 13th December, on a Gainsborough course which had some incredibly wet fairways, but surprisingly played really well – especially the greens, which are as good as anyone can remember in December.

Once again the event was also a fund raiser for the Sudbury Storehouse Foodbank, with all donations being co-ordinated by Roger Davies. Entry fees for today’s event all went towards the foodbank, as well as other donations made separately by players who did not take part. In total £1,120 was raised.

Fittingly perhaps, since Roger was the fund raising co-ordinator, he was also a member of the winning team. With a fantastic net score of 55, Roger, Phil Hickley, Allen Brown and Paul Gregan took the honours. Second was the team of Reg Reid, Barry Hitchcock, John Russell and Gordon Bryan with 57. And third, on countback, was Ian McKay, Martin Brown, Alan Line and Ian Berry with 59.

Pictured, our outgoing Captain, Terry Mitchell, made a presentation to the British Heart Foundation of £5765. This sum represented the money raised during his year of captaincy and was a tremendous achievement.

Playstation Pre-School Last month was so busy we all needed a well deserved break for Christmas. We finished the term with an on-site party which was a huge hit with the staff as well as the children. Morrisons kindly donated all the food we needed for the day, which was a huge help, so thankyou.

A big thankyou also to everyone who supported our pop-up shop and hamper raffle by donating or buying tickets. We raised a massive total of £120 and this money will go towards equipment for the outside area. Thanks must also go to our very generous parents for their lovely gifts.

This term we look forward to welcoming some new children and we have lots planned as we explore the change of seasons from Winter to Spring.
