Our river is in safe hands! In March, HEAT was proud to host a “Network Alliance Meeting” with a focus on the environmental well-being of the River Brett. The presenters included specialists from the Environmental Agency, Affinity Water, The Essex and Suffolk River Trust and The Riverfly Partnership organisation. Each passionately delivered interesting and topical content to a packed Community Room at the URC. Steve Farthing (Hadleigh Angling Club) also provided an overview of the environmental support they have provided in the past and their thoughts in general. Also in attendance was Keith Marsland from Hadleigh Scouts, representation from the Stour Valley Farmers Cluster and “PACE”, a similar group to HEAT based in Manningtree. HEAT’s aim for the river, year on year is to improve the bio-diversity associated with the River Brett both upstream and downstream. This is through monitoring and restoration activities, while ensuring the River Brett is enjoyed by all. HEAT wanted to build on the monitoring activities that were initiated in 2021 and take it to the next level in 2022, whilst ensuring strong partnership with all River Brett stakeholders. This meeting was the “spring board” to launch these 2022 goals. All presentations were extremely well received and there was a real buzz of enthusiasm at the end of the meeting. There is now a very tangible action plan which includes 10 HEAT volunteers who are being trained on invertebrate monitoring which will provide an indication of the health of the river. They will carry out monthly sampling (from Chelsworth to Shelley), with the results being logged on a national database. The training and monitoring equipment will be provided using funds from Hadleigh Town Council. Surveys will also be conducted to identify potential areas for restoration work or the removal of invasive species such as Himalayan Balsam. And finally, all the presenters have agreed to keep in touch, act as consultants and provide continued guidance – a fabulous resource for HEAT to call upon. If you would like to read more about this event and other HEAT activities then visit the newly launched website www.hadleighheat.org where you can also register yourself under the “Get Involved Link” – all are welcome.

Regional solicitors Holmes & Hills now offers a Will writing service which provides couples with a saving of between 17% and 21% on legal fees, when making Mirror Wills at the same time. Married couples, long-term partners and cohabiting couples all benefit from the saving. Why make a Will at all? Quite simply, if you do not make a Will the law says who inherits your estate. Most people assume that everything would pass automatically to their partner, but this is not necessarily so and certainly if you are not married or in a civil partnership, they will have no automatic right to inherit any part of your estate. Your estate may pass to the person or persons you would not want to inherit. It may result in financial hardship for your loved ones or an expensive court action. Making a Will ensures that the people you want to benefit when you die receive your estate. Holmes & Hills Solicitors are experienced to be able to draft a Will that is tailor-made to meet your specific requirements. We appreciate that some couples have ‘simple’ arrangements whilst for others their affairs may be more ‘complex’. Whatever your specific circumstances, Holmes & Hills Solicitors will be able to assist you. Couples often wish to receive advice as follows: • How to update an existing Will • How to provide for young children • How to plan for future care needs • How to leave business interests • How to provide for a disabled child or adult • What steps they should take if choosing to leave out a beneficiary from their Will • Provide for children from a former relationship • How to set up a trust • How to protect your contribution to the purchase price of a property when you live with someone else* • How to give away an inheritance in a tax efficient manner** What if you have children from a previous relationship? Making a Will is very important for couples who may have children from previous relationships and want to ensure that their money will pass to their own family. This can be a sensitive issue between couples – but it doesn’t have to be so. It is possible to draft a Will making sure that your spouse/partner is provided for in the event of your death and ensuring that ultimately your family will inherit your estate. No better time to make a Will – save up to 21% Married couples, long-term couples and civil partners all save between 17-21% when making Mirror Wills, with the exact saving being subject to the complexity of the affairs. You will be advised of this at an initial meeting. There really is ‘no time like the present’ for you and your partner to make your Wills. Even if you have already made a Will, it might be a good idea to review it and see if it still meets all your requirements and accurately reflects your wishes. It doesn’t matter if Holmes & Hills did not draft your existing Will, we are still able to advise you and prepare a new one should you wish to do so. To talk to a local lawyer about making or updating your Will, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 and ask to speak with Dean Stanhope or email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk. *Declaration of Trust **Deed of Variation Couples save 17%-21% when making Mirror Wills at the same time.

The Hadleigh Historian Issue 69 (April - May 2022) Before opening this issue, can you guess the purpose of the strange wooden item shown on the front cover? It was photographed by Peter Cutts of Hadleigh at the base of St Mary’s church spire. Jane Richardson has again delved into the memoirs of Eddie Botwright to bring us his comments on the people of Hadleigh over one hundred years ago. Jane takes us on a tour starting in Angel Street, turning right on reaching High Street, proceeding to Calais Street and then continuing along the other side of High Street as far as Church Street. Eddie introduces us to characters like butchers wearing traditional blue-and-white striped aprons, a doctor’s widow with bottled leeches and apprentice boot-makers swinging their hammers in time to music played on an old gramophone. (In the next issue, the tour will proceed further along High Street.) Mark Lawrence continues to relate how he has investigated the history of his home in Benton Street. In the last issue, he looked at the site and how he could use maps and photographs plus personal observations to piece together the story of the former maltings situated in the garden. For this issue, Mark searched online to see who was living in his house during the 20th century and explains what documents he found and how he used the information. (Next time, Mark will focus on the 19th century.) Joan Rudman of Hadleigh contacted the Editor about the “Welcome home” photographs in Issue 68 saying that both she and her father attended the event held in December 1946. While Harry Seaman was one of the guests being thanked by the people of Hadleigh for their service during World War II (1939-1945), Joan was not only part of the team that cooked over onehundred dinners three nights running but she also helped serve the meals at the Town Hall. From an interview with Joan and a contemporary newspaper article, the story of ‘The School Meals Service and the “Welcome home” dinners’ tells how the organisers eventually found caterers for the evenings of entertainment. The occasional series ‘Holes in Hadleigh’ looks at Toppesfield Bridge or rather the holes that were created in 1976 when the roadway was removed for strengthening work on the bridge. I remember when some pupils at Station Road school brought in dangerous items found in the river bed after the water had been drained away so that the renovation work could go ahead. Headteacher Beti Bornett had to ring for the police to remove the items as quickly as possible! The Hadleigh Historian is on sale price £4 at Avis the Newsagent and The Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer. A one-year subscription (6 issues and postage) costs £30 from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG (01449 740673)

Family Action Day Bring your own trowel! HEAT is running a free environmental action day for families on Saturday 23 April when we will be planting wildflower plugs on part of the new cemetery extension. There will also be a chance to identify creepy crawlies from the river and a guided nature walk along the riverbank to see what flowers and wildlife we can see. The day is suitable for families and children of any age - just bring your own trowel! Email us at hadeigh.heat@hotmail.com to register or find out more at www.hadleighheat.org

The Hadleigh Archive Hadleigh’s History on your Doorstep The A1071 road from Boxford once entered the town via Friars Hill, into Bridge Street and thence to the High Street at Cox Corner. At the Angel Street junction, the main road to Ipswich, then made a ninety degree left turn at a narrow entrance, before it widened someway ahead. This High Street junction with Angel Street was narrow and lined with old properties dating back centuries to the town’s more prosperous early days. Following the First World War, motor traffic had increased, and commercial vehicles became larger, making the corner difficult to negotiate. Horse drawn tumbrils and waggons could also still be encountered! During the year 1936, the old properties on the left-hand side of Angel Street as far as Garden City, also known as Poverty Square, (now Angel Court) were demolished. This enabled the newly widened road to accommodate all the motor traffic to flow towards Ipswich much more easily. A new shop was then built at the junction with its frontage to the High Street, to become the Hadleigh Co-operative Butchers, being an expansion from the original 1886 established Co-Operative premises further along the High Street. This butcher’s shop is shown on this image. Picture ref: 206-RB-18-11 The Hadleigh Archive is administered by the Hadleigh Town Council. The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh. IP7 5DN. A team of experienced volunteers look after the Hadleigh Archive and meet on a regular basis to catalogue and transcribe its large number of documents ad images. Juniors flying the flag for Hadleigh Cycling Club Two of the Club’s youngsters are competing in this year’s Hillingdon Spring Series. Aaron and Ciaran are both regularly participating in the Under 12 races. This is terrific opportunity for the two Juniors to learn the skills and tactics required as racers and to build up their endurance. After two years of COVID disruption, we hope to offer opportunities for young cyclists again. We are also considering repeating the very successful sessions at the Colchester Northern Gateway circuit in the summer holidays. One of our juniors, Jonty, has been selected to represent the UK at next year’s World Scouts Jamboree. It will be a trip of a lifetime to make it to SaeManGuem in South Korea in July 2023 and he has to raise thousands to get there. Anyone interested in helping Jonty should visit HCC’s Facebook page and sign up to a riding challenge linked to Strava and Garmin Connect. This year, the Club is investing in developing its coaches. Roger Kerr will be completing his Level 2 qualification and Benson Ho and Rickaby ShearlySanders will be doing their Level 1 certificates. They were recently joined by other members of the Club at a First Aid course delivered by Steph Thrush Adult membership of HCC is £10 per person. For 2022, adult membership will continue to include Junior Club membership for up to 2 children up to age 18. There is a fee of £3 for any more than 2 children from the same family, or for unaccompanied Junior Club membership. The Club runs a social ride on Sundays in the winter which usually begin at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. The ride is weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub or visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

Fidelis Another great meeting, at our Call the Midwife talk by Kim Mason. Sadly it was a case of having the information too late for most of our ladies, but we can pass it on to our friends and family, and we will have a greater understanding. By the time you read this the Director of Perrywood’s will have given us an update of our new greatly expanded garden centre in Sudbury, and we will be looking forward to a talk on the Crusades. If anyone is interested in joining us at Fidelis please contact me on lesleycook0653@gmail.com

He has been raising money for Ukraine culminating in a day of free personal training at the leisure centre on 11 March 2022, with all proceeds going to Poland to support Ukraine. At time of writing the amount raised is nearing £2,000! A great thing to do by Wojtek. Neil Nineham

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG)

Franklyn Nevard Associates Architecture and Interior Design

Thurland, Sulleys Hill, Lower Raydon, Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5QQ

The PPG’s sub working groups are pursuing their activities and will give progress reports at the group’s next meeting. The Health Centre has agreed to participate in the Spring Covid boosters for the over 75 year olds. They are still waiting to hear details when this will commence. Once this has been confirmed, patients in the cohort will be notified. Please do not call the surgery but wait to hear from them. The Town Council has provided much needed mobility equipment from their Welcome Back Fund to help with this booster exercise. The sum of £49.30 has been submitted to the Hadleigh and Boxford Medical Practice Charitable Trust to support their work in the community. This represents a percentage of the takings from the sale of local artists’ pictures while on display in the Practice. MEDICINE WASTAGE Recently an enormous number of unopened blister packs of tablets was left in one of Hadleigh’s charity shops. They may have been a response to the many appeals for medicines for the Ukraine but as they were not over the counter medicines, they would not be accepted. It was alarming to think of the cost of the drugs in the bag, worrying that it was possible to accumulate so many and disturbing to consider of the many NHS services which could have benefitted instead. Is your medicine cupboard over stocked with unwanted prescription items? How can this be avoided? • Please let your GP or Pharmacist know if you’ve stopped taking any of your medicines • Check what medicines you still have at home before re-ordering • Think carefully before ticking all the boxes on your repeat prescription forms and only tick those you really need • If you don’t need the medicine please don’t order it! If you need the medicine in the future you can still request it. • Check your medicines before you leave the chemist and return any unwanted items. • Once you leave the premises the medicines become ‘waste’ and cannot be recycled or used by anyone else. There is also the safety aspect:• Old medicines may become mixed up with your new medicines. • It is a safety risk for children and others who might take them • Store medicines in an appropriate place out of reach of children • Never flush tablets down the toilet or put in the rubbish bin. • The only safe way to dispose of unwanted drugs is to return them to any pharmacy. • Please also remember that your medicines are prescribed only for you; it’s not safe to share them with anyone else. • If you need to go into hospital, please remember to take all your medicines with you in a clearly marked bag. Just in case you feel none of the above will make any difference here are some recent NHS statistics on the subject. Unused prescription medicines cost the NHS across the UK over £300 million every year. This could pay for:• 80,906 MORE hip replacements* • 101,351 MORE knee replacements* • 19,799 MORE drug treatment courses for breast cancer* • 11,778 MORE community nurses* • 300,000 MORE drug treatment courses for Alzheimer's* *Based on average costs. Please remember to only order what medicines you need.

The Cock Inn, Hadleigh As we enter spring its good news on the Covid front as it looks as though the vaccination program helped to get life back towards some kind of normality, though let’s not jump the gun as viruses have a history of returning when we least expect. Fingers crossed. However, talking of jumping the gun, let’s not forget that we now face another issue that too could end up as a global one of concern. I refer of course to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. What a dreadful state of affairs and I have to say that I really thought that Europe had finished with war. Obviously not. Our hearts go out to the innocent civilians who’s lives are being destroyed. We are trying to do our bit at The Cock Inn. We have dumped Russian made products and will not sell them anymore. Please remember that some Russian sounding products are not Russian. Smirnoff Vodka is one that springs to mind. Its distilled here in the UK, so please don’t be led by simply brand names. We dedicated our St Patrick’s Day Event to the Ukrainian relief Aid Fund and donated £1 for every pint of Guinness sold. We made a collection too though I can’t tell you how much we donated as I am writing this note for the magazine the day before the event. Whatever the result we will send a minimum of £500 to help those suffering and waiting for assistance. There is a great month of music planned at The Cock Inn during April with Ivan (Elvis) Brady travelling all the way from Norfolk to provide a fabulous Sunday 10th afternoon of the very best of Elvis Plus another visit from Band Buzz on Sunday 24th, these four super musicians will play all your favourite tunes from the 60’s through to the late 80’s. We will welcome Irish band Great Craic on Saturday 30th April, so if you love Irish ballads and pop you will love these guys. The Pogues…well nearly!! The highlight of the month will see the debut of SKA Band ‘The Kicks’ live at The Cock Inn for the very first time, I think in Hadleigh too. These guys are perhaps the best of their genre in Suffolk, maybe East Anglia. Super sounds from Madness, The Jam, the Kinks, The Clash & more. It’s Saturday 16th April. Please arrive early as this will be a sell out, though entry is free! April is a great month for sport too. Apart from Premier League football moving toward an exciting season end we also have the Champions League quarter finals and first semi-final together with similar fixtures in the Europa League. Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea and West ham are all still involved. Although Formula One started in March we have two exciting races to wet the motor racing appetite with the Australian and Imola Grand Prix. The MotoGP is back too so its good news for motorbike enthusiasts too. Lets not forget the horse lovers too with the Grand National on the 9th and for golfing fans, The Master from Augusta starting on the 7th and concluding on the 10th. You can even watch the Invictus Games live from Holland between the 16th and 22nd April. In terms of local sport, it was great to see Dawsey’s Jets winning the Hadleigh Dixon Dart Winter League. Congratulations to the Legion Lounges who were pipped to the post by one single point. So close. The Cock Vets were third and The Cock Rebels were 7th. The Sudbury & District Bar Billiards League has yet to finish though The Cock is in second place with all their games played, so they cant overtake Brook Gloves, who look like credible winners, though a great result all the same. Don’t forget our monthly Buskers Night every 1st Tuesday and our Pub Quiz every 2nd Tuesday. 8pm starts for both. Want to play darts for fun? Wednesday nights with Melvyn & Co. With the Met Office predicting decent weather in April lets hope they have got it right and we can all enjoy the opportunity to sit outside in the sun. Also from Triumph is a new non-wire lacey bra in the Amourette Charm range, the stretchy lace is so pretty with seamless cups and deep underband. Mey camisoles are back made from enca viscose creating a silky feel and really comfortable to wear under clothes or as an outerwear piece. An extremely popular addition to the Smoothease Fantasie range is the non-wired bra, which eliminates back fat! I’ve already sold out and re-ordered and unlike many bras of this type it does not flatten and gives a good shape with moulded cups and a second skin feeling it is super comfortable! If you are feeling uncomfortable with backache, shoulder and arm pain or just need a revamp, now is the time to book your bra fitting appointment as a new bra will eliminate these problems, improve your posture, confidence and appearance in your clothes.

Vulnerable Road Users The New Highway Code Walkers, horse-riders and cyclists - you are invited to a Road Safety Evening by the BHS at Elmsett Village Hall on 19th April 6.30 for 7pm This is an evening event organised by the British Horse Society to bring together drivers and all vulnerable road users in response to the changes in the New Highway Code and the introduction of the Hierarchy of Road Users. Our rural roads are now busier than ever and as vulnerable road users we need to work together to make the roads a safer place for us all. Speakers include Alan Hiscox, the BHS Director of Safety who has been working very closely with Cycling UK/British Cycling and the Dept of Transport. He is enthusiastic in his approach and has been visiting a wide range of groups including Driving Schools and Haulage Companies and is aware of the need for all vulnerable groups to be heard. Most walkers, cyclists and horse-riders are also drivers. So please come along, bring a friend and discuss and ask questions at what will be an informative and hopefully, enjoyable evening. Doors open at 6.30pm for Tea and Cake. Evening finishes as 9pm Book your free place at https://www.tickettailor.com/events/bhssuffolk/656185 You don't have to book, but it does help with refreshments and set up. Hadleigh Art Club activities We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those that ask, we try to give advice/guidance/constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group... We charge £3 per session to cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5, due in May. There is a list of weekly topics but these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current weeks) while others will be working on their own subject. Here is the program for April 05/04/2022 A Chocolate Bar, wrapper and all. Even with a bit already eaten? 12/04/2022 AGM, social session and exhibition of our own work. Can we also ask no new visitors on this day, only people who have previously attended. 19/04/2022 Fishing Boats, or any type of boat, moored, at sea or even wrecked (there are many along the Suffolk estuaries). 26/04/2022 A busy Market Place. 03/05/2022 Reptiles. There are many to choose lizards, snakes, crocodiles, alligators and so many more.

How times have changed since we last wrote in the December edition of the Hadleigh Community News. Nationally and internationally there is a heavy mood surrounding us all against a backdrop of understandable climate change concerns. It is ironic that it is the weather itself at this time of year that can start to give us the boost we all yearn for. Spring has arrived. Gardens come to life, local nurseries open their doors again after growing new plants over the winter, ready for us to brighten up our own havens and escapes. Much needed at the moment. Brett Gallery is proud to be part of the Bridge Farms Barns complex at Monks Eleigh which includes one such nursery and we have been pleased to see them open again, full of lush locally grown stock. Corncraft Tearooms, alongside its own shop, is offering a gradually expanding menu having engaged a new chef recently and its peaceful surroundings still provide an oasis to relax for morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. Most of us know and love Sarah’s Attic, an Aladdin’s Cave where we can buy something similar to those treasures of the past. Olivien Patchwork and Quilting, Lavenham Falconry and the Outrageous Cake Company complete the destination for a most pleasant trip out. And there is Brett Gallery, with its range of affordable exhibits created by East Anglian Artists and Makers. Despite us all needing to be spending more selectively at this time, we still like somewhere to buy that unusual, surprise gift for a relative or friend, for that special occasion or indeed for ourselves. Or a simple treat for our home. The Gallery is a unique showcase for a range of local and affordable art, ceramics, woodturning, glass, photography, jewellery, homeware and metal art. The extensive card selection also reflects the talent of the exhibiting artists. It is calm and peaceful, away from the crowds. Exquisite • Unique • Local www.brettgallery.co.uk

Hadleigh Old School Summer Art Season Starting in May On 6 May 2022 Hadleigh Old School commences a summer of art by leading East Anglian artists. The season opens with two shows, side by side, with art of differing media. Genista Ana Dunham, works in glass and ceramics, her collection is named ‘Angels and Beasts’ and she notes ‘the conscious light dialogue or perhaps silence between worlds’. Genista has exhibited in the Bury St Edmunds area as part of a collective and in galleries in West Suffolk this is her first solo show in Hadleigh. Pictured is a ceramic work by Genista Ana Dunham entitled ‘Phoenix eating its tail’ Christopher Northall, titles his work from the last couple of years as ‘From Fenland to Seashore’, with a range of pictures interpreting scenes or images captured across a wide swathe of East Anglia – from Cambridgeshire to Great Waldringfield to Jaywick. Media used includes oils, linocuts, and etchings. Hadleigh Old School will be offering works of art at a large and small sizes and prices to suit a range of budgets. News from Elmsett School Books for Schools’ Runners Up We are thrilled to share with you our news that we were runners up in the East Anglian Daily Times ‘Books for Schools’ promotion. We wish to thank everyone who collected and donated their tokens to our school We received a mixture of fact and fiction books to the value of £500 for our School Library and to use during lessons. This good news coincided with our Book Week, during which we relaunched our School Library. The children had a fantastic week sharing stories each day with other children across the school. They shared stories in their classes, in the school hall and even outside in the sun on World Book Day! They took part in live lessons with other schools around the country and were enthusiastic finding ‘Wally’, who was hiding in a different place each day around the school. On World Book Day our children dressed up in characters from their favourite books, more photos can be found on our website www.elmsettschool.co.uk Exploring The World Around Us Our Hedgehogs Reception Class have really enjoyed exploring ‘Exploring the World Around Us’. We have made various bird feeders in our outside area. We have made clay faces in our outdoor classroom which bring a smile to our faces every time we see them. 'Wow' moments were had with Otter’s Class when our sticks we threw into the pond in Buckle's Wood slid across on the ice which had formed in the cold weather. At the allotment, some of us chose to make spider webs using willow and wool, others chose to draw, dig, rake or look for minibeasts. Everyone loves learning and being outside! Rainforests Our Owls Class have been investigating the impact of deforestation on the rainforests around the world as part of our rainforest topic. After lunch, the children returned to find their classroom had been destroyed! We explored the threats and the impact on this habitat (including endangered animals) as well as looking at preservation. We created posters to raise awareness and answered our key question of ‘Why should rainforests matter to all of us’ in an explanation text. We also made rainforest biomes in a plastic bottle to understand how the rainforest ecosystem works, linking it to our understanding of the four layers of the rainforest. Over half-term we created our own Rainforests in a shoebox and produced an information leaflet. Tel: 01473 658303 www.elmsettschool.co.uk

Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson (Hadleigh North Ward) Firstly, I should like to take this opportunity of thanking my Public Realm and the Environment Agency who responded very promptly to my requests to visit Hadleigh within 24 hours of Hurricane Eunice. As Cabinet Member for Environment, we were all on high alert across the district, however I was concerned about the potential flooding around the river and surrounding area. Teams have worked tirelessly to ensure the fallen trees across the river, which potentially could cause a lot of damage were removed quickly. In previous years trees have remained obstructing the river for months and I am pleased to be in a position where I can deliver a response promptly to avoid the river flooding and causing excessive damage locally. Gallows Hill Planning Application – The residents I hope will be pleased with the new planning application put forward for Gallows Hill. It will have 14 houses, of which 4 will be affordable housing. Like Manor Gardens, I have worked very closely on the details and tried to ensure with the developers Birch Group that local residents concerns were all put forward and I am sure you will be delighted with the new proposal. It is a small development using traditional hand made bricks, careful and tasteful thoughts to the landscaping and traditional design of the build. The bridleway will not be affected and no access via Castle Rise. Car park strategy – I delivered the car parking strategy to Cabinet this week and it was considered one of the best strategic presentations in many years. We will be undertaking public consultations March /April, so please do attend and let me know your thoughts. I need your feedback and support. The new payment machines were inserted the day before Hurricane Eunice and my Officer was out the morning running round checking all was in order for the residents of Hadleigh at 7am on the morning of the hurricane!! I gave my profound thanks. Babergh has agreed our response to NGET''s Bramford to Twinstead power lines proposals which were discussed at Cabinet this month. I believe more underground cabling should be considered for power lines planned across south Suffolk. Babergh Cabinet agreed to submit our submissions to the consultation on National Grid Electricity Transmission's Bramford to Twinstead power grid project. It proposes to bolster 400kV lines, and NGET has committed to putting cables underground through the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Stour Valley to lessen the impact on those landscape areas. I expressed my opinion, that the firm should explore whether the overground power lines planned between Leavenheath and Little Cornard could also be put underground. I do understand a lot has to go overground, but I just feel in this stretch, we should be pushing to try and get it underground because of where it is. When you are in the AONB you should not be able to see the overground lines, otherwise it rather defeats the object of the exercise. I was pleased my recommendation was put forward and we now wait to hear the final decision. Council Tax increase effective April 22: The Conservative Cabinet Member for Finance has proposed £3.48 per month, equivalent to 29p per month for a Band D householder. I hope residents understand we kept the increase to an absolute minimum, this equates to 29p per month or 7p per week. Lastly, on April 4th I shall be on Radio Suffolk between 7am – 10am launching ‘Clean for the Queen’. I think you will all agree, the less rubbish creates a clean and tidy town. My thanks always to our local Tidy Town Team. This scheme is to be promoted particularly for the Platinum Jubilee Year. Please, if everyone picks up 2 pieces of rubbish a week across Hadleigh, that is 12,000 pieces removed a week in Hadleigh. Thank you again for all your emails and keep them coming through, you are my eyes and ears… Email: sian.dawson@babergh.gov.uk Tel: 07931 703157

Therapy Gyms Making fitness accessible Over the past 15 years or so, Matt Brinkley, founder of The Therapy Gym, has combined his experience and knowledge in the world of personal training with a commitment to those unable to access conventional fitness facilities. Providing accessible, personalised fitness programmes for those requiring extra support and guidance to improve their overall wellbeing, is now the everyday goal. “Seeing people smile and have fun with us, is why we do it. The rewards are always both ways.” The Therapy gym is far from the stereotypical gym where ‘pumping iron’ is the motto, and the bigger the weights and the more reps the better. There aren’t rows of running machines, pull-up bars and dumbbells. Whilst that ‘stuff’ is there, it’s just a small part of the overall set of tools and methods used in the process of building the strength, confidence and trust of those wanting to improve their fitness. The Therapy Gym members include those with cognitive or physical impairments, older adults, people with low confidence or knowledge in becoming more active and people exercising for weight and health reasons. Under Matt’s guidance, the Therapy Gym team have the experience and knowledge to provide the perfect environment to understand an individuals needs and capabilities. Tailored programmes are created to suit and enhance movement, strength and confidence, plus physical and mental health. Not everyone can travel to the Therapy Gym, that’s where the Mobile service is able to provide the same fitness support ‘at home’. Whether a group session at a Care Home, a community group or an individual requiring 1to1 training. The last couple of years have brought massive changes to all our lives. In response, Matt and the Therapy Gym team have developed the Online Therapy Gym. Accessible on desktop, mobile and tablet, there is a library of accessible fitness and movement sessions, designed to engage with and encourage those keen to get fit in their own time, when they choose. The Therapy Gym is open to all ages and abilities, and now offers extended hours availability for members wanting to develop their fitness without the support of a trainer. Secure access outside normal Therapy Gym hours including mornings, evenings and weekends, provides the flexibility to fit in with personal schedules. Individual induction sessions can be easily arranged, and personal fitness plans can be developed during normal hours. One-to-one sessions are a key part of the Therapy Gym offering. The team have individual experience in a broad range of specialist areas including injury and illness recovery, weight management and health improvements. Ongoing assessment and reporting of personal achievements, goals and fitness can be part of any professional healthcare integration as required. The Therapy Gym is perfectly situated just out of town, with onsite parking, easy access to the A12 and within 20 minutes travel time from Colchester and Ipswich. Find out more at www.therapygyms.co.uk or call 01206 692524 to arrange a free taster session and consultation with our team. Make it your first step to fitness today.

On 22nd March, the Club hosts a Charity Lunch at Monks Eleigh Village Hall. Rachel Sloane will entertain after lunch with a talk on her life in Radio. Next month our demonstrator will be Nick Grounds, the well known auctioneer cum National Flower Demonstrator. Do come and enjoy this special event. Tickets for both these events are available from Jenny on 01473 822971. The Flower Club meets at Hadleigh United Reformed Church, Market Place, Hadleigh. Doors open at 7:00 for 7:30 start.

Don't try this at home! In the storms we had in Hadleigh two trees fell across the river on the river walk, I decided to climb across one of the trees to see if I could make it to to other side, I got a bit of the way, grabbed a branch, it snapped and I fell in to the river. I pulled myself back to the bank, but had a problem as the bank was steep and slippery, my dog ‘Hadleigh Hero Bowza’ stood fast and I grabbed his collar and pulled my self out, I told my sister what I had done, she said at 75 years old I should not be doing this, Bowza has saved overs, maybe this time he saved me.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club In March we held our AGM that was very well attended. Great to see new and old members after the past two years restrictions. To make the event more light hearted we invited Sally Hepher to talk about her gardening mishaps. We could all relate to her humorous tales. The picture shows her next to our competition table, which was a vase of daffodils. Next month we have a willow weaving demonstration on Monday 11th April. There is also a coach trip organised to Beth Chatto Gardens on Tuesday 14th June. This is open to non members at an inclusive cost of £20 (members £18). If you would like to join us call Maggie on 01473 827082 to book a seat and find out more details. With any luck by the time you read this any danger of frost is past, so it should be safe to give your Hydrangeas a tidy up. Last years old flower heads can be cut off, cutting back to a strong bud. Old branches can also be removed down to ground level especially if the plant is getting leggy. The new buds make it obvious where to prune. Buddleia is a tough shrub that should not be left to grow too big. A pruning saw is the best tool for this job. It’s amazing how quickly new growth appears. Hard pruning will not affect this years flowers. Willows and dogwood that have been grown for their colourful winter stems can be cut back to six inches from the ground. New brightly coloured stems will soon appear. Hope to see you at our April meeting in the Guildhall at 7.30 pm. The competition is three tulips, the same or different varieties in a vase. Happy gardening

Looking ahead, the Nayland 10K family-friendly run takes place on Sunday 10th July, starting at Little Garth School, Nayland, CO6 4JR. The event raises money for local charities including SESAW, there are routes to suit all ages and abilities through Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Book your place at www.nayland10k.co.uk Now Spring is here, keep a look out for hedgehogs as they emerge from hibernation, sleepy, very thirsty and heading for the nearest source of water. Hedgehogs are good swimmers BUT many die in garden ponds as the sides are too steep for them to climb out. Please make your pond hedgehog-proof by creating a sloping edge and a ramp or green thick coated wire anchored at the top and bottom of the pond to provide an escape ladder. Take care if you are pulling down old sheds or buildings, you may find a hedgehog under there. Finally, when using a strimmer make sure there are no hogs in the vicinity, many suffer serious injuries every year from strimming accidents. In fact, I’d better check the garden for our prickly friends before Mum calls all the dogs for dinner, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Hadleigh Community Primary School Positive about Down Syndrome (PADS) All pupils from Nursery to Year Six came together this month to plant sunflowers in support of Positive about Down Syndrome (PADS). Partridges in Hadleigh were kind enough to supply us with enough sunflower seeds for each child and the children used recycled egg boxes from Gate Farm Eggs as an alternative to a plastic pot. Pupils have been asked to give a donation to PADS in return for taking their seedling home. The sunflowers will grow and develop at different rates, just as children do. We are hopeful that some of the sunflowers will be brought back into school and planted in our peace garden after Easter. #hideandseekHCPS After nearly two years of pressing pause on our community game of Hide and Seek we are up and running again! At Hadleigh Community Primary School we encourage and foster a love of reading and books. We want to bring the excitement of all the places a book can take you to into the wider community whilst sharing a love of reading right from an early age. Now we are back up and running you may find, or have already found books hidden in Hadleigh. These are for you to take home and enjoy sharing. Once you have finished, we would love you to re-hide it in Hadleigh for someone else to find and enjoy. We have created a Facebook group called #hideandseekHCPS where we welcome any photos of the book, where it was hidden and maybe of the finders. We are aware a lot of our books are still out in people’s homes from before the first Lockdown. If you do have one in your possession, please feel free to either hide it in Hadleigh; or if it needs repackaging it can either be returned to Hadleigh Community Primary School if you have a child linked to our school or nursery. Alternatively, you can email hideandseek@hadcps.uk and we can arrange to come and collect it. We hope the whole of the community in Hadleigh enjoys joining in the fun and everyone gets to share many wonderful bedtime stories.

Hadleigh Choral Society Spring has sprung and our new term begins on Tuesday 19th April, 7.30pm at the Ansell Centre, Hadleigh. New members are very welcome so come along and 'try us out'. We are a friendly bunch and find that singing together is an opportunity to park life's troubles for an hour or two each week. Contact our secretary, Helen Rogerson, 07886 416034, email helenrogerson@googlemail.com for more information or visit our website. Our Musical Director, Chris Phelps, is busy working on some special arrangements of well known popular music for us and we are really looking forward to celebrating not only the Platinum Jubilee in song, but also the 150th anniversary of the birth of English composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams. Our next concert will be on Saturday 18th June at St Mary's Church, Stratford St Mary, so do save the date. The programme is still being finalised and further details will be available via the website in due course www.hadleighchoralsociety.org.uk

The Peacock Inn Chelsworth Awarded Two AA Rosettes

For Quality & Personal Service FENSA from Start to Finish

TEL: 01473 823584 • MOB 07885 941615 49 Benton Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 5AR

The Peacock Inn, a 14th Century pub situated in the stunning village of Chelsworth in the heart of the Suffolk countryside is celebrating having been recently awarded a coveted two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, as well as 4 star silver award for accommodation following a recent inspection. The pub will reopen on Sunday March 27th (Mother’s Day) after a month long programme of kitchen renovations including a new onsite kitchen garden. The inspectors recognised the high standards achieved at The Peacock, noting that the ‘food was very enjoyable and comfortably exceeded expectations,’ alongside praise for being a ‘great place to stay because of its quality, style and relaxed atmosphere.’ The Inn features a cosy bar, restaurant, 7 bedroom suites and a stunning separate cottage, all tied together by a beautiful cottage garden and an unrivalled south-facing vista over the River Brett. Head Chef and Suffolk local, Sam Clover said, ‘We’re thrilled to bits to have been awarded two AA Rosettes, and we feel we’re at the start of our journey here at The Peacock – we only opened under our current ownership six months ago and have high hopes for the future. Suffolk is home for all of us, and we’re spoiled for choice with an overwhelming variety of local ingredients and suppliers which we celebrate and showcase on our regularly changing seasonal menus. Me and my kitchen team are excited to continue our journey and push the boundaries of what we can use local produce to produce.” Thomas Moore, General Manager at The Peacock added, “It’s hard to think that I’ve only been here since October last year and most of our team for even less time. We’re so proud to have achieved the two Rosettes, alongside a 4 star AA rating, in such a short space of time and are very optimistic for how we will build on this. We’re super-grateful to our amazing kitchen, front of house and accommodation teams, as well as the ever-supportive residents of Chelsworth and surrounding villages for whom we are first and foremost their local community pub. We look forward to developing our plans, continuing to raise our standards and showcase to all our customers the very best of Suffolk hospitality.” The Peacock Inn will be reopening its doors for Mother’s Day, Sunday 27th March, after an extensive refurbishment of the kitchen and renewal of other key areas of the premises including the pub and new kitchen garden. The team are excited to be able to build on its high quality food and service, and are also recruiting for chefs and front of house staff to join their talented team. Sudbury & District Citizens Advice I love live music and now that restrictions have lifted, I’m keen to start going to events again. I’ve booked tickets for some gigs over the next few months, but I’m still a little worried. I can’t quite believe things are fully back to normal. What will happen if restrictions come back in? It’s understandable to be feeling apprehensive when there’s been so much change, and knowing your rights will help you deal with anything unexpected. If you’ve got tickets to an event which goes ahead, but you change your mind about going or realise you’re no longer able to go, you have no legal right to a refund. However, if the event is cancelled, your right to a refund will depend on how you bought the ticket. If you booked through an official seller and the organiser cancels, moves, reschedules, or makes the event behind closed doors, you should get a refund. This is true even if it’s cancelled due to a government ban on large events. If this happens, contact the official seller to find out how you can get a refund. If you bought your ticket from a ticket-reselling website, your refund will depend on the site's terms and conditions. If you’re worried about the event being cancelled, it’s a good idea to look at the terms and conditions before booking. If you bought from a private seller, unfortunately it’s unlikely you’ll be able to recover your money, even if the event is cancelled or rescheduled. We recommend contacting the seller to see what they can do. Ahead of any events you’ve booked, keep checking the information from the official seller or organiser to make sure you know straight away about any updates, like changes to the date or cancellations. Another thing to be aware of is that scammers exploit these situations for their own benefit. If your event is cancelled and anyone - whether it’s a person or a company - offers their services to try to recover money on your behalf, be suspicious. Make sure that you're aware of the signs of a potential scam and always be on the lookout. If you need more information on how to get a refund, take a look at the Citizens Advice website or contact Sudbury & District Citizen Advice. We are providing advice by telephone and email Monday to Thursday, 10am - 1pm. Please phone 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact

The Community Forum meets on the second Tuesday of each month. A complete list of dates and our Terms of Reference are available. We share information and ideas with representatives from the following groups: voluntary social care, community organisations, residents, business and Town and District Councils. Anyone is welcome to attend. The next meeting is Tuesday 10th May 2022 at 4.15pm – 6pm in the Social Room at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. The chair for May will be Richard Fletcher Supporting Ukraine It was noted that, for the moment, donations of items into St Mary’s has stopped. The organisers of moving the items for despatch to the Polish/Ukraine border, have left with two very full trucks and they simply do not have the storage space for further items. On their return they will know exactly what items are required and will send out a new list, when donations will, we hope, resume. Ipswich buses has partnered with Emergency First Response and is sending a bus that was used for covid vaccinations and, on arrival in the Ukraine, this will be used as a blood donation station. It will be filled with humanitarian aid for the outward journey and requires donations of Matresses & bedding, Warm clothing, Baby milk, Dry foods. There is no deadline for donations to be dropped off as the situation is ongoing and further buses will go over the coming weeks. Please drop the above items off at 7 Constantine Road, Ipswich, IP1 2DL 1. TOWN COUNCIL The Town Clerks report was circulated prior to the meeting. The new Town Mayor is Cllr Gordon McLeod and the Deputy Mayor is Cllr Bill Wilson. Two vacancies remain which will b filled at the May elections. The Peoples Project is an initiative set up to create a project or event to develop, improve or entertain the community; chosen by and delivered by th people of Hadleigh. This starts in April and has a budget of 5k. If anyone would like to be on the panel please send your reasons why to projects@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk. The neighbourhood Plan is underway and volunteers are needed. For more information email projects@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk. Information concerning the Festival of Suffolk can be found on www.festivalofsuffolk.org. The Festival of Suffolk’s torch relay is expected to come to Hadleigh on 21 May for appearance at the May Show and will stay overnight, offering the possibility of tie-in events. Nominations for Hadleigh Heroes to carry the torch should be given to the Town Council, with a short reason why so their story can be highlighted. They will ride with the torch in a rickshaw – they won’t

have to walk/run ! A working group open meeting is to be held in the Grand Hall on 9 March when Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations will also be discussed. 2. BABERGH & MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL The bench in the Market Place remains unrepaired with unsightly barriers still in place. Emails to Mick Fraser (mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk) or Sian Dawson (above) please. Barriers around tree roots in Magdalen Road car park have been tidied up somewhat after a productive meeting between Jan Devey and a councillor. Babergh is still seeking a solution as to how to deal with the roots. Council tax notices are being sent out but the website for dealing with this online is lagging behind whilst information is being uploaded. Corks Lane trees near the playground behind the old council offices are covered in ivy and there is a lot of rotten wooden fencing - unsightly as well as dangerous, as the land drops away to the river. Please petition Sian Dawson or the Public Realm for assistance. The two trees fallen across the river are being dealt with by specialist contractors. 3. VISIT HADLEIGH All note that no May Show tickets will be available on the day - all must be purchased in advance from Keith Avis or online www.hadleighshow.co.uk. Visit Hadleigh has a stand at the show. All to check that their information is still correct on the Visit Hadleigh website and remember to update Stuart or Jane with all upcoming events. Stuart was delighted to report that sponsorship for the hanging baskets and their watering has been secured as has funding for the website for 2022. The Town Guides will be taking the Memories of Cedric Morris exhibition to Sudbury. It will be shown at the HIVE Community Hub on 1 & 2 April. 4. TIDY TOWN Elaine reported that the bottle bank area in Magdalen Road car park is in a better condition. Sadly there is a huge rise in items like nitrous oxide canisters being found. It was suggested this information be passed to the police. The schools now run an Eco Club to try an assist with eco-anxiety in the young – which is very high – and 100 schools have registered since October to become Green. The teachers are trying to change the narrative from hopeless to hopeful. It is hoped a student speaker, with a teacher, will come to speak to HCF. Many main route verges are litter strewn around Hadleigh – some following the recent storms - but as Tidy Town are not insured to cover these areas, please report any such areas to Sian Dawson or Public Realm – contacts above – for them to carry out the work. 5. St MARYS CHURCH The security grille for the modern Betton Window has now been fitted. Checks have been made on the other grilles and stained windows and some necessary works identified. The Festival of Music and Flowers (25/26 June) will complement the Armed Forces Day, making it a fuller community event and The Old School has kindly agreed to host a small (c. six artists only) art exhibition in the South Chapel at this time. Jo and the churchwardens met with the new Secretary of the DAC (the body with official authority over our church) to bring him up to speed with our future plans for the building and it is clear that before any approval is given, we need to make a cast iron case. We will be coming to the community for assistance with this, initially in the form of written support as buy-in from the community and proof of their support is vital in our undertaking. We will hold a public meeting when we are a little further forward and we will not be asking for financial help at this stage ! “Who Killed the Vicar ?” is our murder mystery on 23 April at 6.30. Tickets £10 to include a buffet supper available from the church office in the Deanery Tower, Tuesday-Friday, 10am - 12 noon. The Lime Tree project is back on track due to a most generous donation and support from the Town Council which meant the prohibitive cost of advertising consent has been greatly reduced. The Lime tree stump has been worked on and smoothed over and it is hoped the first of four information boards will be up in Spring. TASK: everyone is challenged to count the rings and bring the answer of the age of the tree to our next meeting ! 6. HADLEIGH & BOXFORD PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP Work at our Practice has returned to pre-Covid days with all services back on track. Updates on the sub-groups’ work will be provided at the next meeting. The Practice has applied to dispense a fourth Covid vaccination for the over 75s in Spring. Once confirmed, these will be by invitation only. Thanks were offered to the Town Council whose Welcome Back Fund has provided mobility equipment for this. A percentage of the takings from recent art exhibitions has been paid into the Practice’s charitable trust. 7. HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) hosted a very successful meeting about the River Brett, bringing together the Environmental Agency, Affinity Water, the Anglers Assn and the Scouts. A partnership working group was agreed to monitor and promote improvements along the Brett. Volunteer days continue and a family day on Sat 23 April is planned for the planting of wildflower plugs at the new cemetery. All welcome. HEAT has secured an HTC grant to fund a six-week pilot forest school, for pre-school’ers, later this year. It is hoped to have a permanent, affordable, forest school in Hadleigh in due course. The allotment suffered storm damage but will be tidied. Flowers will now be grown alongside vegetables as distributing produce has proved challenging. More permanent volunteers are sought and the website is now live.

A.O.B Defibrillators: The Rotary will back an external machine at Londis which will better cover the new estate area off Lady Lane and the industrial estate. A grant will be sought from HTC and a fully qualified electrician will be used to secure the machine. Discussions are underway as to whether it will be locked or unlocked as there are pros and cons for both. The cricket club is erecting an external machine. Training will be discussed with ACL and our first responders. Together Tuesday & St Mary’s have teamed up to host a memorial event at St Mary’s on Sunday 3 April from 3-5pm. A grant from HTC means transport can be available and they will help publicise the event. Any offers of help with the catering will be much appreciated.

Rotary Review Ukraine Crisis: What is Rotary doing to help? The Rotary network of Clubs in Europe is working overtime to provide as much assistance as possible both inside Ukraine and outside. Inside Rotarians are distributing supplies , aiding the wounded and helping refugees to the border. On the border there are Rotarians at most border posts and reception centres as well as helping to man 24 hour hotlines into Ukraine. Rotary is also linked to Shelterbox and Water Survival Box who are providing aid. In the Czech Republic, Rotarians help to run a regular train to the border transporting food, clothing and medical supplies for onward transmission into Ukraine and bringing back 600- 700 refugees at a time. In Moldova a Rotarian has turned the 200 bed hotel which he owns into a reception centre housing refugees whist they await moves to other countries. In the wider community, Rotarians in many countries are sending money and supplies to centres in the border countries. The main advice for this country is to send money as most necessities may be purchased locally and there are logistical problems in transporting goods. Hadleigh Rotary is concentrating on raising money therefore and by the time you read this a street collection will have taken place in Hadleigh and this will be supplemented by donations from the Club and members. There is also a worldwide petition being signed by thousands of Rotarians – Rotary Says No To War Let us hope also that by the time you read this a peace treaty will have been signed. Obituary: Members were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of Pauline, wife of Rotarian Fred Creed. Pauline was a lovely person who fully supported Fred in his many activities including Rotary. She joined him at all social events and helped on other occasions as well. She will be sadly missed by all members and their partners. Goodbye: The Club’s youngest member, Kay Baker, left in March to take a new position in Colchester which is nearer to her home. Unfortunately ill health has dogged Kay over the past year or so and she has been unable to attend as much as she would have liked but she will be missed by everyone. Members wish her good health and all success in the future coupled with the hope that she will continue Rotary membership with a Colchester Club. Membership: The Club is now down to 10 members again and urgently needs new blood. Rotary has been in Hadleigh for 44years and would certainly like to see its 50th anniversary but this is in doubt if new members are not found. If you gained satisfaction from helping your local community during covid, you could use Rotary as a way of continuing to help in this way because Rotary does just that and much more besides! Hadleigh Town Council Public Consultation Day Hadleigh Town Council would like to inform Community News readers that there will be a public consultation day held on Tuesday 26th April 2022 between 12 noon and 8pm in the Town Hall Dining Room (entrance opposite The Ram). Several Councillors and Town Council Officers will be present and would like to welcome residents of Hadleigh and the surrounding areas to pop in and learn about two important projects; Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan and the plan to upgrade facilities at the Layham Road Sports Ground. The Neighbourhood Plan Sub-Committee has been reformed and has been working with professional consultants and is now very active in gathering the views of residents across the broad spectrum of the town’s planning and infrastructure areas. The sub-committee’s plan is to present a finalised Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan to Hadleigh residents for a formal public vote within the next 18-24 months. Please come along to learn about the status of the Neighbourhood Plan, why it’s so important and to help us create a valuable part of evidence for the plan, the Character Assessment. The Layham Road Sports Ground Sub-Committee has reached the stage where we wish to show you the latest plans for a new All-Weather Grass Pitch (often called a 3G Pitch) and additional car parking at the Layham Road Sports Ground. We will also be showing the plans for a new sports pavilion. You will have the opportunity to chat with members of the committee and complete a questionnaire to let us know your thoughts. If you cannot attend, we have published the latest plans on the Town Council website and you will have the opportunity to complete the questionnaire online or collect a paper copy from the council offices.

The People’s Project As reported last month, The People’s Project is Hadleigh Town Council’s new initiative to create a project or event up to a cost of £5k, for the community that stems from what you want and ultimately chosen by Hadleigh’s residents to be delivered with and for the people of Hadleigh. Initiatives or projects that could improve or entertain the town are now being called for! Is there something you think the town would benefit from or enjoy this year? Is there an event or a project within the town that you’d like to help make happen? Submit your ideas between Monday 4th April and Monday 23rd May and the shortlisting panel will select three submissions which meet the criteria to then be put to a public vote. Application forms and terms and conditions can be found on the town council’s website, from the town council’s office at The Guildhall or email projects@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk to request a pack via email.

Mayor’s Award The Annual Mayor’s Award recognises individuals and community groups of Hadleigh who have made an outstanding contribution to the community in the last year. Do you know someone that has gone above and beyond for our Community? Do you know a voluntary group that has helped the Community? Nominations must be received by Friday 13th May 2022. Please email townclerk@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk or write to Town Clerk, Hadleigh Town Council, Market Place, Hadleigh, IP7 5DN with the name and address of your nominated person and the reason you are nominating them. Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline and Charity Shop The crisis in Ukraine is causing much hardship for the people living there who just want to be left alone to get on with their lives. These are people we support on a day to day basis, people who I personally visited in December. Many have lost their homes, some their lives. It is a tragic situation. There is also a lot of “fake news” flying around on the internet but I would assure you that everything I write, which is from direct contact with our friends in Ukraine, is genuine and validated. The photos of the buildings attached are the very buildings we visited in December when delivering the Christmas stockings to the children. Our driver Sergei used to live in a flat located in the gap in the building - fortunately he was not at home at the time of the bomb hitting. Most of this area of Borydanka now has no utilities, no water supply, no phones, sporadic internet connection and many are in hiding in cellars. I received a communication from one of the social workers we know, it only said “I live” - she had managed to get a connection for just a few minutes. We are being asked about collections of donations to send aid to the families. We are not currently doing so because there are so many other organisations actively working to do this. We know from our experience and our direct contacts that what is needed “on the ground” is food, water, medication, specific baby supplies such as nappies and high protein baby foods. The best way to deliver this is for the products to be bought locally (or in Poland) and delivered directly to those most in need and it is for this reason that we are concentrating on raising financial aid that we can ensure is used to deliver help in the quickest and most effective way. I would ask you to please share this appeal with friends and family. We are also being asked if we will be bringing children from the Ukraine via our Health Respite Program and the answer is yes, when the time is right and we are able to do so. With this in mind, if anyone would be interested in Hosting a child/children we would like to hear from you now so paperwork can be completed and we can hit the ground running as soon as the opportunity allows us to. Lastly, one way of raising funds is via our online Ebay Charity shop. If you have anything at all that you think we may be able to sell please do get in touch and if at all possible we will arrange to collect from you. The list of what can be sold is so diverse please do ask rather than just thinking we wouldn’t want it. Thank you to everyone for your support in these very trying times. English Defiance against Viking Invasion: East Anglia, Guthrum and the Danelaw The first recorded Scandinavian attack by ship is in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle A sa789, when a Reeve of Beohtric, King of Wessex was killed, several years before the assault on Lindisfarne. I suspect that sporadic but persistent small-scale raiding had taken place for centuries. The main objective of these violent raiding parties led by their ship’s captain, or a commander was treasure and hero status back home. The chance to plunder and the enjoyment of bloodshed drew them to our shores. The Vikings found amusement in the torment of women and children, and profit in the taking of slaves. Patrick Wormald described the Vikings as ‘if not actually mad, were probably bad and certainly dangerous to know.’ ¹ The ASC documenting regional Viking raids express the same distress apparent by the monks’ use of language such as ‘utter ruin’ and ‘desolation’. A brief background of the history behind the fall of East Anglia to Viking warlords such as Guthrum, is useful. From the mid ninth century raids appear to be organized, with more warriors sailing in fleets rather than small scale opportunism. The 851 invasion is a good example of this point. The ASC recorded 350 ships sailed into the Thames Estuary to relentlessly sack London and put to flight the Mercian Army. We cannot, of course, verify the number of ships but certainly enough warriors landed to relentlessly attack and sack London, put an army to flight, and hold the territory. ² The Vikings from this point are tactically led by Danish warlords, and not ad hoc skirmishes led by the ship’s captain. King Æthelwulf and his two sons defeated the Danes twice in 851, however, the Danish onslaught was relentless and by the time of Æthelwulf’s death In January 858 the Danes were confident enough to over-winter on the Isle of Sheppey and pillaged at will throughout East Anglia where they ‘trawled the countryside with fire and sword’. The next two decades remained a constant struggle for the English as we shall see. The ASC E (870) writes that following the Battle of Hoxne (869) the Abbey of Medeshamstede (Peterborough) was ‘utterly destroyed’ and ‘brought to nought what had once been mighty’. The Abbot and all the monks were killed, the surrounding countryside ‘laid to waste and wilderness for a century’, and King Edmund was killed in battle. King Alfred’s biographer Asser also writes that King Edmund of the East Angles died in battle, other sources say Edmund chose martyrdom. ³ The following year, the warlord Halfdan crossed into Wessex, made his base at Reading and launched an attack that defeated the full West Saxon force. King Æthelred and his brother Alfred barely escaped but they quickly mustered the fyrd again. The Battle of Ashdown (871) was successful, but relief was brief because the Danes claimed victory two weeks later at Basing, then Merton where King Æthelred was fatally wounded. In April the Witan4 chose Alfred as king not King Æthelred’s son Æthelwold. 871

Battle of Englefield in Berks - defeat of the Danes by ealdorman Ethelwulf Battle of Reading – Danish victory over King Æthelred and Alfred Battle of Ashdown - Defeat of the Danes by Alfred Battle of Basing - Danish victory Battle of Merton – Danish victory, King Æthelred mortally wounded Battle of Wilton - indecisive

The English were being sapped of manpower for their army whilst Viking reinforcements arrived by the shipload. Alfred faced far greater threats and changing situations than earlier kings all requiring different skills such as negotiation, a spy system to watch enemy movements, written messages, however, to break Oath was unthinkable. As mentioned above, the Battle of Wilton was indecisive, the Danes enforced a cash payment (gafol) 5 as their price for withdrawal. In 875 the Danish force divided, Halfdan headed north and Guthrum to Cambridge. They remained in a permanent state of war-readiness stealing what food, livestock, horses,

etc. they needed torching what they didn’t to instill fear. Unexpectedly Guthrum marched his army to the royal burh of Wareham in Dorset. Alfred mustered and laid siege. Eventually Peace was negotiated, and as a sign of good faith Alfred gave hostages and Guthrum his Oath reinforced by a pledge on a ring sacred to Thor. Guthrum slaughtered the hostages and escaped to Exeter to await his fleet (but it had been destroyed by storms) Alfred followed and again encircled Guthrum. After more Oath taking Guthrum left for Mercia where he forced the client king Ceolwulf to cede half his kingdom, so Guthrum now controlled East Anglia and half of Mercia. The peace was broken by Guthrum on Twelfth Night 878, when he led a large army and seized the royal vill of Chippenham. Clearly Guthrum’s oaths meant nothing. The ASC records ‘many fled across the sea’ but many had to submit. While Alfred and his family fled to Althelney, in Somerset, Guthrum occupied Alfred’s halls and enjoyed his food rents. To compound English misfortune, the fabled Ragnar Lothbrok (Raven Banner) launched a 23-ship strong attack from his winter base in Dyfed was bravely met by the Devonshire fyrd, led by the local ealdorman. They fell back on the earthwork protection of Countisbury Hill then slaughtered more than 800 of the enemy. King Alfred mustered at Ecgbert’s Stone and marched northward to meet Guthrum. The Battle of Ethandun (Edington) is where Alfred drove the enemy to a fortification possibly Chippenham. Alfred and his army met savagery with savagery, killed Danes, fugitives, horses and cattle and laid siege until Guthrum had no choice but to capitulate. Guthrum was in no position to negotiate he was obliged to agree terms. He offered hostages; Alfred offered none. Guthrum, along with thirty of his foremost men accepted Christian baptism, dressed in white baptismal robes it must have been an impressive ceremony of submission. The ‘Treaty of Wedmore’ agreed in 878-9 was superseded in 886 possibly because it was already beginning to fracture. Alfred’s raid into East Anglia in 886 using ship-power, a tactic used by the invaders, could have been retaliatory which suggests a reason for the revision. Following his defeat at Ethandun, Guthrum marched to Cirencester but he did not withdraw until the autumn of 879, and in 880 he moved his army across to East Anglia, declared himself king and shared out the land. Interestingly, Alfred started building burhs (fortified and manned) along the rivers of the agreed boundary6. He most likely had little trust in Viking oaths. These defences were later increased by Alfred’s son Edward. In some places burhs were built on opposite sides of the river for better protection, also the river could be blockaded by a ship if necessary. This all suggests that Guthrum, if not raiding himself probably turned a blind eye to others who did. Alfred had little choice other than to cede East Anglia perhaps due to lack of manpower to keep fighting battles. Alfred’s burhs and increased use of ship power is suggestive of a different tactic one of containment rather than battle. Can it be argued that the Danelaw was never a complete separate political entity with a fixed boundary, rather regions where Danish law and customs applied. Guthrum ruled a part of Danelaw, he did not rule northern regions also under Viking control. Geoffrey Hindley is of the opinion that a map to show England at the time of Danelaw can hardly represent reality. He suggests a scatter of separate regional communities, each with its own roots back to the English past. In conclusion some historians have, for the last fifty years or so, sanitized the invasion of the Vikings to an almost benign impression of peoples wishing to settle, intermarry and farm. The battles, if not exactly air brushed from the narrative, have been glossed over and the shield wall and hand to hand fighting diminished. The primary sources give a very different interpretation; the Vikings embodied a barbaric host leaving behind destruction and terror. The Vikings may have enjoyed hero status returning home laden with plunder and slaves, they were certainly not the heroes of English society. 1

The Chronicle entry for 896 states that the king ordered ships to be built ‘long ships’ Lang Scipu. They were twice’ as long as the others’ some with sixty oars, others more. John Pullen-Appleby. English Sea-Power c871 to 1100 Anglo-Saxon Books 2005. Can we assume that the 350 ships in the 851-invasion had 30 oars (men) an immediate army of several thousand.

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle states that the men of East Anglia under their king, Edmund went to Hoxne to fight the heathens. But the Danes had the victory, killed the king and conquered the land. Asser, writing Alfred’s biography wrote ‘he died fiercely’. Abbo of Fleury whilst visiting Ramsey Abbey (985-7) wrote his Passion of St. Edmund. He had the story from St Dunstan who heard it from Edmund’s armour bearer.

Gafol is a tribute exhorted by Viking armies. Probably raised by a fixed levy on a hide. The distinction made quite clear in the contemporary sources, geld and gafol, tax and tribute. Note: The term Danegeld is essentially a post-Conquest coinage, tax pre-Conquest was called heregeld.

Dividing line between Alfred’s and Guthrum’s peace – it ran up the Thames along the Lea to its source, then to Bedford and by the Ouse to Watling Street.

King Guthrum Group Since our launch in January, we have been very busy behind the scenes. We are pleased to have the opportunity to mount a display board in St Mary’s Church, which outlines the heritage link between Hadleigh and Guthrum, king of East Anglia 878-890, the first person associated with the town to be named in the historical record. In 871, the Great Summer Army of Danes arrived in England with Guthrum as one of the leaders. He secured the kingdom of East Anglia and in 878, almost succeeded in conquering Anglo-Saxon Wessex under King Alfred. Peace treaties were drawn up, which included Guthrum’s baptism as a Christian and also designation of the boundary between the two kingdoms. His warriors withdrew to East Anglia where they settled as farmers and in 890, Guthrum died at his king’s town of Headleagh in Suffolk, which is considered by placename experts to be Hadleigh. Since the early 16th century, guide books to Suffolk have named Hadleigh as the burial place of Guthrum and a century later, the dean of Hadleigh wrote that for many years the arch on the south side of the church has been referred to as Guthrum’s tomb. In 1767, the area under the arch was examined to reveal a stone grave with a floor of small glazed tiles covered with what seemed to be remains of a decomposed body. This area was re-examined in 1851 with similar inconclusive results. In the early 19th century, sextons reported that they were impeded by obstructions when grave-digging in the south churchyard and eventually foundations of a supposed chapel were dug up with great difficulty together with some ancient coins. To investigate this, Suffolk Archaeological Unit undertook an excavation in 1984 during which two trenches were opened. Traces of a massive flint and mortar wall were found and a sherd of MiddleSaxon Ipswich-ware pottery. As Guthrum lived under his new religion, it is not unreasonable to conclude that he received Christian burial. Assignment of the name ‘Guthrum’s tomb’ to an area in the church may indeed locate its actual site, although many centuries of worship have greatly altered its surroundings. Parish Council The main matters discussed during the meeting of Wednesday 23 February were: • District Council Councillor Woods said he would be interested to have more information about the tree canopy survey and biodiversity mapping exercise; the Clerk would contact Babergh. • Speeding There were now enough volunteers to make up two teams to move the SID device on a regular basis; team B would be responsible for this during March. Councillor Curran confirmed that Suffolk Highways would not allow the pole at the Mill Lane end of Upper Street to be moved. In response to a question, he said no particular pattern of speeding had emerged; the 30mph wheelie bin signs were helping. Councillor Hall said the ANPR trial had started in Capel St Mary. • Flooding on Layham Road near Rugby Club The Clerk had copied the correspondence to Councillor Hall (SCC), who had pursued the matter with Highways and also Councillor Fraser; the Clerk had also contacted Councillor Fraser. An update had since been received from the Highways Assessment Officer, who advised that a cyclic cleanse of all the drainage in that area would be carried out in the next few months. • Queen’s Platinum Jubilee The report from the Events Group was noted. Councillor Curran proposed that the Parish Council should make a donation towards the costs of organising the event; this was agreed unanimously. Councillor Hall said there might also be a possibility of some funding from her Locality Budget. With regard to the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, the Clerk would check the deadline for submitting applications to the Woodland Trust for a tree to be planted in November 2022. • Annual Parish Meeting The draft agenda was agreed; the Clerk would contact the other village organisations to invite them to give reports. Refreshments would be offered after the meeting. Thank you for supporting our Spring Clean Thanks to all of you who supported our Spring Cleanon or around 12 March. We had 30 volunteers in Upper and Lower Layham picking up litter and storm debris; cutting back overgrown vegetation and cleaning signposts. A brilliant job – well done. Playing Field 120 Club Winners in the March draw were: £25 Ticket No 35 King, £15 Ticket No 44 Hall A new commercial crop planted in Layham If you walk up Overbury Hall Road from Lower Layham Street and pass Beehive Cottage you will be faced with a field that, four years ago, was planted with cricket bat willow stools (known as ‘tods’). These tods put-out growth known as ‘sets’ which are cropped every fourth year. The best formed shoots are used for new cricket bat willow planting along our rivers or in plantations – as is done in the nature area of our playing field. These cut standards put out roots and establish quite quickly – they then take about 15 years to grow into mature trees after which they are felled and taken away for cricket bat manufacture.

Layham Playgroup We have had so much fun celebrating World Book Day. It was great to see the children’s costumes (and the staff!) and to share in their favourite stories. We were also able to bring these stories into our play. On our walk down the lane it reminded us of the story The Bear Hunt, as we found lots of mud! We have been very excited to see the swans building their nest again, check out our Facebook or Instagram pages for updates on the swans’ nest, Thank you to everyone who donated bags of clothes, we raised £44.00, your support is very much appreciated. We are holding an Easter Coffee Morning on Wednesday 13th April 10:00 – 12:00 in Layham Village Hall. All are welcome to join us for refreshments, stalls and children’s activities, Layham Playgroup is a registered Charity Incorporated Organisation 1160254.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Babs and I missed all the drama of two severe storms this Spring. Safely shut in our room under the spanking new roof, we listened to Storm Eunice having fun outside. The loudest crash was from the field shelter in Parys’s and Tilly’s field which took to the air, flipped onto its roof and landed on the other side of the driveway. Luckily the trees and the hedge stopped it going further but it managed to destroy the fence as it went. Altogether we lost 450 meters of fencing, all on the girls’ side of the property. The two friendship groups of mares thus became mixed, but with no fencing they had enough toom to roam and avoid arguments. Best of all they stayed close to the Centre waiting for Lyn to rescue them. Nobody wandered down onto the road. We send lots of sympathy to those friends who suffered more damage than we did. The Easter term has been busy with our old riders returning and the new ones learning the ropes. Here am I pictured enjoying a rare gossip with my lady riders, Evie and Rebecca, one Friday in March, and in the arena we have both Squidgy and Camilla, the Shetland sisters, working together with Buddy and Rex (respectively) on their sheepskins. Lovely to see such happy faces all round. We still operate some Covid restrictions at the moment, mainly to keep parents and carers out of the Centre due to overcrowding that can happen at the pinch points. However, guests and supporters will be welcomed on SUNDAY MAY 1st in the stable yard to start their STRIDE OUT FOR SHELLY walk. Beginning at 10.00, walkers can register with a fiver, collect the route map and enjoy the morning in this lovely bit of Suffolk. I shall ask to have my door open so that we can meet. A happy Easter to you all and may you stay safe and healthy this Spring

Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School World Book Day The theme for this year's World Book Day at school was diversity and the children were set a challenge to turn their classroom door into a book cover. The children in class 3 also performed 'The World Book Day Oscars' and presented a range of books with awards for the way that they celebrate diversity. We chose this theme in school to foster an understanding of the wider world and what better way to show this than through books. We have been very busy in school too, reviewing our reading material and restocking the library with books that feature characters and authors from around the world. All of which can be found in the diversity section. Be sure to check the English page on the school website to see how we have been getting on. Playground Games and Skipping Fun On Thursday 10th March the school's Playground Leaders, together with the rest of the school took part in some playground games and skipping activities throughout the day. This culminated in an assembly at the end of the afternoon to demonstrate all they had learnt. Staff were also encouraged to demonstrate their skills much to the delight of the children. The use of these new and enhanced skills will be encouraged daily outside during break and lunchtimes. Hintlesham & Chattisham C of E Primary School, George Street, Hintlesham, IP8 3NH. French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, this month’s news comes with a mixed bag of up’s and down’s, as it has been a very trying month for me and my helpers. The storms created chaos up at the farm with fencing being blown down leaving many broken posts and the donkey’s large field shelter being ripped off the ground and blown over into the trees. From my call out for help previously in the magazine news to put our shed up, we have had two locals Alan and Steve contact me, to say they would help one morning a week in their spare time, which was good news. They are both now on board with us and are slowly starting the re-build of the donkey’s shelter, as that is now a priority over the shed. We just need to raise the money needed for the repairs, as there was a lot of damage. If you have a spare pound or more you can donate that would be wonderful, either go to our Website or contact me, details are below. I know our donkeys would be grateful for your help in getting their shelter back up and repaired, I certainly will, as it is one less worry for me. While on the bad news note, we have sad news of the loss this month of two beautiful members of our animal family, Costa one of our donkeys and Dollymix one of our horses. Losing them was sudden and unexpected and has brought many tears and sadness to our team, they both brought much joy to us daily and Dollymix was one of the sweetest, kindest, gentle animals I have ever met. Her horsey friends are feeling the loss along with cheeky Costa’s donkey friends missing him. They had both been with us for many years now and Dollymix had just celebrated her 31st birthday. Let’s look at some positive news or I will start crying again, seems like the last couple of months more tears have run down my face than I can remember. I was contacted by a lovely kind lady Pamela, she is a cat lover who wanted to help, Thank you Pamela for your kind words and for your much appreciated donation. With all the huge vet bills pouring through my door, Pamela’s donation will certainly be of help. This kind of generosity from a stranger gives me hope and keeps my faith, at a time when it feels like one blow after another is coming our charities way. It is heart warming when you hear and read about people who go above and beyond to help others, like we are hearing at the moment in the world and here at home for a Charity like French’s, it still takes me back when someone comes forward to help. For Alan our new shelter building helper, he said he wanted to help us because of the work we do to help people who have mental health problems, or learning difficulties, for me that was touching to hear, as we are not just a small local animal rescue, we are a charity that has always worked with people of all ages, that need that extra help in life and to work alongside animals in a natural environment, is just the right thing that works for many a soul. I would also like to thank Boxford and Groton Charities for their continued support. This is a personal thing you may be able to help me with; the bungalow I have rented for some years is now being sold by the owner, so I am urgently looking for a cottage, bungalow or house to rent, which is in a local peaceful village location. If you know of one that is available, please contact me as soon as possible. Our next quiz night will be Saturday evening 21st May at the Ansell centre in Hadleigh, our last quiz night was a success and was enjoyed by all. We cannot wait to see you on this fish and chip fun night. For bookings call Sharon on: 07999 051401 or email: frenchs.100club@gmail.com If you can spare a morning in the week or at the weekend for you to volunteer and help us, with the animals on the care and management side, or help with repairs and fencing, then please do give me a call or email me, we still need more hands on deck. French’s is a charity on your doorstep, can you help, either with time, donations, or sponsorship. You are welcome to come along and meet our animals. Call me for an appointment. Appeal for Volunteer Animal Carers Having managed, for the last two years, with fewer people who have done a magnificent job, we now seek reliable adult animal care volunteers for the following tasks: Cleaning dog, cat and chicken pens, feeding the cats, chickens and rabbits, walking the dogs and grooming the cats. There are sometimes other jobs about the site to be done on an ad hoc basis. Whichever area you choose to work in, we ask that you commit to the same morning each week and let us know if you are unable to come in. Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Suffolk’s Response to the War in Ukraine Last month both Suffolk County and Babergh District Councils passed motions condemning Vladimir Putin’s immoral and reprehensible invasion of Ukraine. The Ukrainian people are facing a wholly unjust war and escalating humanitarian crisis and I felt privileged for to speak out in applauding the enduring bravery of the Ukrainian forces defending their homeland against this unconscionable aggressor. We are horrified by the awful ongoing situation in Ukraine and our thoughts are with everyone affected, the millions of people already forced from their homes, and all those still prevented from seeking safety by continued Russian bombardment. The councils know all too well from more than two decades of working with displaced people the human cost of this – the trauma of lives suddenly turned upside down, the heart-breaking decisions individuals and families are forced to make, and the pain of separation from loved ones. There has been an incredible outpouring of support and compassion from the Suffolk public, including many offers of rooms in people’s houses in response to the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme. However, we call for the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable refugees to be prioritised in the delivery of the scheme, and we wait for important further details on many practical elements. We would like to know more about how refugees will be safely matched with hosts and who will be responsible for this, and how vital support services will be provided to traumatised people. We are also concerned that the requirement for refugees to have visas will make the process complex, lengthy and hard to access. Suffolk Refugee Support have responded to the needs of vulnerable refugees arriving here since 1999. With more people forced from their homes around the world than ever before, we will continue to provide a warm welcome and long-term support to refugees and asylum seekers in Suffolk, however they arrive and whatever their needs. Suffolk Refugee Support is not playing any role in registering offers of accommodation or matching hosts with individual refugees. SCC is ready to provide whatever practical support it can to Ukrainian refugees arriving in Suffolk, to help them integrate, begin processing trauma and rebuild their lives here. This might include English language teaching, employment advice or support groups. We are not taking or coordinating any donations of items at this stage, but will put out appeals for items on its Facebook page as and when they are needed. Suffolk is also reviewing its contracts with Russian-owned energy company Gazprom. We have decided to invoke our options to break away from the contract, ending our connection with Gazprom as the part we can play in helping to bring to an end this act of aggression on a free and peaceful nation and its innocent people. Councillor Surgery I have decided to restart holding my monthly surgery. Usually on the third Saturday of the month, the first will be on 23rd April at 11:00 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street. To maintain safe distancing, I will restrict resident numbers to a maximum of 2persons. Should you need to speak to me concerning an issue that affects you, then please contact me at - email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk or mick.fraser@babergh.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or Facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh, Twitter: @mick_fraser. On a windy and wet Sunday morning on the 20th February 2022, Hadleigh Hares AC held their annual Eyes Rite North Essex and South Suffolk X Country League races around the hills of Holbecks Park, Hadleigh. A total of 241 senior runners including 9 from our hometown club took on the challenges of five miles of hills and mud whilst coping with strong winds in the aftermath of Storm Eunice. Our men’s team of Steve Hunt, John Scaife, Paul Gardiner, Joel Bamsey, John Jousiffe and Nicholas Kricka scored a combined men’s score of 409 points with our ladies team of Elaine Turner, Rachel Bodsworth and Elizabeth Stewart scoring a combined score of 110 points. As this was the last race of our X Country season our X Country team finished in 4th place in the league overall. John Jousiffe also took our cross country senior runner of the day! Our Hadleigh Hares AC Junior team turned out in force with 15 runners taking part on our mile long X Country route including a lovely big hill and plenty of mud for them to conquer. The Hadleigh Hares Juniors are flying. What a great cross country season these youngsters have had! Running competitively in this very strong Eye Rite, North Essex and South Suffolk Cross Country league. Race’s at Chelmsford, Halstead, Colchester, Harwich and finally at home in Hadleigh. They competed in a league of 10 teams including Colchester and Tendring, Colchester Harriers, Gt Bentley, Ipswich Jaffa, Tiptree, Springfield, Halstead, Harwich and Mid-Essex. They are a very young team mainly consisting of 9-13 yrs old boys and girls running against some strong up to U17 yrs olds. But they showed grit and determination throughout the season and gained lots of experience and mental toughness by finishing 5th in the combined league. They are a really great group to work with and the team bond between them is amazing. Thanks must be given to the parents of these children who have to get them to the venues. Well done must be given to Jo Sargent, Sam Cooper, Kitty Rigby and Steve Wilkinson for coaching these brilliant young runners. The town of Hadleigh can hold it’s head high with these children giving out a positive mindset in a constructive way. Hadleigh Hares AC would like to thank Holbecks Park Estate and the local landowners for allowing us to use their land for this event as well as Hadleigh United Football Club for allowing us to use their facilities during the morning of the event. And finally, a massive thank you must go out to all the club members who helped to put on this event over the race weekend. If you would like to experience what X Country running is like or become a member of Hadleigh Hares AC then please see our website at www.hadleigh-hares.co.uk for details

News from Whatfield CEVCP School As we enter into the second half of spring term we are now seeing school life and activities return to normality. Our year 3 and 4 children have enjoyed weekly swimming sessions at Stowmarket Pool and we have been involved in sporting events at Inspire Suffolk and Hadleigh High School. With summer term around the corner we hope that children will enjoy a varied curriculum welcoming back some much loved activities. Big Hoot This year both our schools, Whatfield and Bildeston are taking part in the Big Hoot. From June to September 2022, St Elizabeth Hospice is bringing the next Wild in Art Trail to Ipswich. Following the success of Elmer Big Parade in 2019 which you may recall seeing around Ipswich the next trail will see 40 individually designed Big Hoot owls placed around Ipswich for everyone to see and enjoy. Visitors will also be able to see Little Hoot Owls, who will be popping up in special locations all across town and designed by local schools and groups. By joining the programme we have committed to pledging £695 for St Elizabeth Hospice over the next 18 months. We received a blank ‘Little Hoot’ sculpture to decorate, our children have painted it with a base coat of pale blue ready for a winning design to completed by a local artist. We will be engaging in some fund-raising activities with the help of our PTFA – FOWS, the first of which was dressing up for World Book Day, we saw some fantastic owl costumes throughout school. We also have a competition of guess the number of owls in the jar for the children, the winner wins their very own bespoke Whatfield Owl. In February we were visited by local farmer Oliver Pratt and their tractor during the popular Tractors in Schools week initiative run by Suffolk Agricultural Associate. Children were able to learn about farming and food, field to plate and the vital role that farming plays in our community. It was a joy to have the tractor on our school playground once again. Our year 5 and 6 children in Oak Class had the opportunity to visit Warner Brothers Studio and take part in the Harry Potter studio Tour. The trip forms part of their Talk 4 Writing topic this term. It was wonderful to see children heading off on an educational visit once again. At the end of March our KS2 children will be heading off for a three day residential to Kingswood on the North Norfolk Coat. We can’t wait to see pictures of them enjoying themselves and engaging in activities which will build resilience and team working skills. If you are considering Whatfield Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary as a school for your child, do please get in t ouch with us. We would welcome a visit after school hours due to Covid-19. Please phone the office on the number below or email us. We would love to meet you. ‘Celebration Concert’ at St. Mary’s Church, Brent Eleigh Join us for a ‘Celebration Concert’ with wonderful cellist Yalda Davis, on Sunday 3rd April at 3pm, which follows the recent completion of the interior relighting scheme, enabling all the fine features of our mediaeval Church to be viewed. At last, our unique set of altar wall paintings created between c. 1275 – 1325, can be seen in all their glory. Over the past 2 years, Yalda has taken her cello and played in every one of Suffolk’s 508 mediaeval churches, including a fund-raising concert in Brent Eleigh; this is thus a ‘welcome return’. Our audience this time will include guests from Trusts and individuals who have kindly assisted to fund the scheme. Tickets in advance for this special occasion, are now available at £12.50 each, including tea afterwards, from Michael Warner on 01787 247615.
