Hadleigh thanks Suffolk Military Personnel Hadleigh said thank you to local military personnel to celebrate Armed Forces Day. The national initiative is an annual recognition of the contribution of serving men and women, giving thanks to the sacrifices military personnel and their families make. Hadleigh businesses have used their windows to show support with creative displays, the Armed Forces Day flag has been flying at the war memorial and the High St featured a mural saluting the forces, with thanks to the Royal British Legion. The highlight of the week was a free community thanksgiving event on Thursday 23 June in Hadleigh Market Place, at which Deputy Lieutenant, Gareth Wilson, received a salute from 75 service personnel representing every military detachment in Suffolk, plus reserves and cadets. He gave thanks for the work and dedication of the services, alongside Chairman of Babergh District Council, Cllr Kathryn Grandon and the Mayor of Hadleigh, Gordon McLeod. Local residents came out in force to share in the celebrations and to give thanks to the Armed Forces. Detachments included representatives of 7th Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers from Wattisham Flying Station, 28 Engineer Regiment from RAF Honington, 23 Parachute Engineer Regiment from MOD Woodbridge, reserves from the 158 Logistics Corp based in Ipswich and the Hadleigh Army Cadets. After the public event, service personnel were treated to a reception in the Town Hall, hosted by Hadleigh Town Council. The personnel took away a small gift bag made up of donations from local businesses, including Adnams. Cllr Kathryn Grandon said: “It is a wonderful thing to see the strong support and connection between the people of our district and the forces community, particularly with Wattisham Flying Station staff. It’s an honour for Babergh to host this event on behalf of Suffolk”. ...Continued on page 5

73% of people think IF a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. similarly, 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at hospital, if you can't make them yourself*. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Should your spouse/partner or parent become unable to manage their affairs themselves due to ill-health or injury, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and neither a partner nor next of kin will be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. For example, this would mean being unable to deal with financial institutions in respect of accounts and pensions, the Department for Work and Pensions, or utility companies. Similarly, a next of kin will not be able to make decisions regarding the health and welfare of a spouse/partner, parent or other relative, including where and what care should be provided, as well as what end of life care should be received, if any. What is needed to be able to help? To assist your spouse/partner, parent or other relative with affairs during their lifetime, or make certain decisions you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means they will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). Common reasons for needing to help Often people need to assist with these matters because their spouse/partner, parent or relative has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident. What happens if LPAs are not in place? If you want to help your partner or parent with property, financial, health or welfare decisions and they do not have Powers of Attorney in place and were incapable of making them, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Until the Court authorises your application you are unable to deal with the persons money or property, and will be unable to make decisions regarding their health and welfare. What are the two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney? LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney: • Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home). • Health and Welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves. The Hadleigh Archive Hadleigh’s History on your Doorstep

The Wheatsheaf Public House at number 4 High Street, is shown here in its closing era before its eventual conversion to residential use. To the Hadleigh locals in past years, this pub was always known as the ‘Shoof’, this being a Suffolk dialect word for a sheaf of wheat, being a bundle of cut ears of wheat with their stalks and tied together with binder twine. A group of sheaves were then stacked together end on in the field into shocks to dry before collection. The Wheat Sheaf, as it was termed in 1844, reflected the agricultural life of the town at that time and continued to serve the needs of the High Street together with other public houses and inns, all now long gone except for The George. In its latter days, the ‘Shoof’ had a brick porch added, then, when closure came in September 1995, the building stood empty for some time before its conversion began. The porch was then removed, and briefly, the name of the Wheatsheaf painted onto the brick semi-circular of the entrance doorway was on display once again, but there was no beer within. The Hadleigh Archive is administered by the Hadleigh Town Council. The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh. IP7 5DN. Hadleigh Walkers Our August walk on Saturday 13th will be a circular walk taking a route to the South and East North of Hadleigh. Starting in Hadleigh, we will leave Stonehouse Road car park at 0930 and take the Railway walk to Benton End, then Upper Layham, Lower Layham, Shelley, Fox Farm, Sodom and Gomorrah, Bacon’s Green, Raydon, across country to Woodlands and back into Hadleigh along the Railway Walk. The walk is about 10 miles along moderate terrain but with little in the way of shortening options for anyone wanting a reduced distance. We will have 2 refreshment stops along the way and should arrive back around 1330 – 1400. As usual, we aim to maintain a not too demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr). Walkers should be aware that any weather is possible so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Hadleigh Mayor Gordon McLeod said: “Many people in Hadleigh have a direct link to the Armed Forces community, through work, family, or friends, so it’s no surprise to see the warmth of support on display. The role of the Armed Forces in combat and in crises like the pandemic or supporting refugees from Ukraine can rarely have been so central in people’s thoughts.” Together with neighbouring Mid Suffolk District Council, Babergh District Council is celebrating the 10th year of their commitment to the Suffolk Armed Forces Community Covenant – a pledge by local authorities on behalf of their respective communities and statutory agencies to support our local armed forces community.

Could you help to start up a Men’s Shed in Hadleigh? Men’s Sheds, as defined by the Men’s Shed’s Association, are: ‘similar to garden sheds – a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practice skills and enjoy making and mending. The difference is that garden sheds and their activities are often solitary in nature while Men’s Sheds are the opposite. They’re about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, and of course a lot of laughter.’ We would love to see a Men’s Shed started in Hadleigh. The idea is to provide a venue – we would offer the Ansell Centre – and time and space for men to gather to build, mend, make and develop skills together. There is a wealth of information on the UK Men’s Sheds Association website about the value of Men’s Shed’s. The movement started in Australia, but has spread around the world and there are thousands of Sheds supporting the wellbeing of thousands of people. The Ansell Centre trustees would love to see such an opportunity offered to the men of Hadleigh. We know that men’s mental health is a cause for concern and believe that setting up a place for men to enjoy developing their hobbies in a welcoming environment would be good for our community. It needs a man with the enthusiasm to get things started. It needs someone with some drive, energy and good humour who recognises the need to support men in a way that serves their particular needs. The Ansell Centre trustees will support with information gathering, financial advice, and the whole start up – but we need a man with vision to help get this off the ground. Could you be that man? As Britain’s most popular foreign holiday destination, with more than 18 million British visitors to Spain, in pre-pandemic 2019, it is not surprising that typical Spanish dishes are among our favourites – none more so than paella. The dish is actually named after the wide, shallow pan in which it is cooked, traditionally over an open fire: the paellera or paella, the word for a frying pan in Valencia's regional language. Paella was synonymous with the Valencia region, one of the most important rice-producing areas in Spain, but it has become one of Spain’s bestknown dishes. Originally a farmers’ and farm labourers’ food, it was cooked by the workers at their lunchtimes and eaten straight from the pan using a wooden spoon. We tend to think of paella as a “fish dish”, not surprising, perhaps as most British visitors to Spain head for the Mediterranean coastal resorts many of which are fishing villages. Valencia itself was always a major fishing port and just a short distance from the city are the Albufera Wetlands, a freshwater lagoon and an ecologically important rice-producing area. Most of Sibarita’s rice is from the Albufera Natural Park. Rice would have been the basic ingredient of the original Valencian farm workers’ paella, together with Garrofon white beans. They are large beans with thin skin and a mild, creamy flavour. Other ingredients were whatever was available on the day, meat generally being chicken or rabbit, also anything left over from the previous day. This is how paella came to have so many variations. Whether your favourite is seafood, meat or even vegetarian you can prepare this dish to your own taste. “Painting makes you feel better” Red Alert: Weather Warning of Extreme Heat is leading the news bulletin as this article is being written. This is second life threatening weather warning of 2022. In February we were warned of the danger of Storm Eunice. Fortunately, Hadleigh Old School, the arts venue, came off lightly with a couple of fence panels blown down. In contrast one of the Suffolk artists we admire suffered a much greater calamity. Christopher Ryland lives in an Storm Eunice by Christopher Ryland, Elected Fellow Society of Botanical historic Suffolk Pink painted Artists house in Gainsborough Street Sudbury. On 18 February 2022, strong winds from Storm Eunice brought down a huge tree from the grounds of the property opposite Christopher’s house, collapsing through a garden wall and showering branches and bricks on the pavement and road. The tree was so large as to block the busy main route through the town and ended resting upon the roof of Christopher’s house. Thankfully no-one was injured. Fast forward four months on and finally repairs have been made and scaffolding removed. The event was so momentous that Christopher decided to record it in art, the result being a beautiful watercolour painting – shown here. When not painting natural disasters, Christopher Ryland is more usually creating beautiful colourful paintings of flowers and floral scenes from the gardens and countryside of Suffolk. Hadleigh Old School will be presenting an exhibition of his work every Saturday (10am-5pm) and Sunday (11am-4pm) in August. We will also have a preview afternoon 2-5pm on Friday 5th August to which everyone is welcome. In addition, this August we will also be showing works on paper from the so called ‘Benton End’ artists, Benton End being the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing that Sir Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines ran in the mid Twentieth Century. The pictures on display will include rarely seen ‘nudes & rudes’ and artwork by Sir Cedric Morris, Arthur Lett-Haines, Kathleen Hale, Lucy Harwood and Joan Warburton. On All Takeaway Food Collections Monday to Thursday

The Cock Inn, Hadleigh Well folks, we’ve had some great weather at the time of writing and the real heat is yet to come according to the forecasters. Let’s make the most of it. As well as getting all those ‘good weather’ jobs out of the way and the odd vacation or two, don’t forget to get to your local pub and enjoy ice cold drinks and secluded gardens, just like we have at The Cock Inn. It’s all been replanted and refreshed and there are shaded areas too. We are dog friendly and kids are allowed in the garden until 7pm. August is generally a quiet month for entertainment and the like as many people take their annual holidays and the kids are off school too. However, we have a few music events planned for the month starting with a visit from pop and rock band Buzz on Sunday 31st July. It’s our famous Sunday afternoon Soiree, so please come along and listen to this four piece band. Rock the ages with all your favourites from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. The fun always starts at 3pm on Sundays and finishes up around 6pm and if it’s a sunny day, what a way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The ever popular Paul Gee is with us on the afternoon of Sunday 14th August, so another glorious afternoon of smooth tunes from days gone by. A diary date for September while we talk music. Saturday 17th will welcome the wonderful Irish band Great Craic. If you’ve not seen them yet you are in for a treat. If you have you can do it all again. They really are greaaat!! For footy fans there is an early start to the Premier League as a consequence of the World Cup taking place in Qatar mid November. The season kicks off on Friday 5th August with Crystal Palace playing Arsenal at 8pm. On Saturday 6th Liverpool take on Fulham at 12.30pm and Everton face Chelsea at 5.30pm. The following day, Sunday the 7th Man Utd are in action against Brighton at 2pm and their Man City rivals play West Ham at 4.30pm. The World Cup kicks off mid November when the Premier League will take a break, restarting Boxing Day. The World Cup Final takes place on December 18th with a 3pm kick off. Motorbike enthusiasts have the British MotoGP to look forward to which takes place at Silverstone on Sunday 7th August. There is F1 Grand Prix motor racing action too with the Hungarian GP on the 31st July at 2pm and the Belgium GP on Sunday 28th August, again with a 2pm start time. All live at The Cock Inn. For something different and following the Commonwealth games, the European Athletics Championships are being held in Munich between the 16th and 21st August and for tennis fans the US Open Grand Slam commences on the 29th August in New York. Well August is of course a cricket month and there is lots going on, too much to list. The highlight I guess is England v South Africa, starting on the 17th till 21st at Lords. We will continue with our Wednesday night novice darts each Wednesday throughout August, Buskers night will take place on Tuesday 2nd and our popular pub quiz on Tuesday 9th August. Both Buskers and the Quiz are held on the first and second Tuesday of each month. Derek Cranston Derek passed peacefully away in Ipswich Hospital on Tuesday 28th June, after a thirty hour stay. Derek who was 86 years old had lost his mobility and had been bed ridden for the last year of his life. He will be sadly missed. Carole Cranston

Hadleigh Cycling Club’s 7th Annual Gayford Flyer sportive will take place on Sunday, 11th September. It costs £15 to enter and this includes refreshments and music at The George. We are very keen to encourage riders to try out the many lightly-trafficked roads around the town. This year’s Flyer will have two signed routes of around 60 and 30 miles on mostly quiet roads close to Hadleigh, with some great views and the odd hill. Details on how to enter can be found www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk . There will be no entries on the day. The event is open to young cyclists provided they are accompanied by an adult. Since its launch in 2015, nearly 1200 cyclists have signed up and completed the sportive. One participant last year commented: “The route was fantastic! A bit challenging with all the hills in the second half :) and therefore even more rewarding. It was such fun to be able to do an organised ride again. Especially on such a beautiful day. Thanks to all the volunteers and the organisation for putting all the time and effort in.” The sportive is named after Oswald Gayford, Hadleigh’s celebrated aviator who in 1933 flew from the UK to South Africa and broke the world distance record. Pathe News filmed his celebration parade through Hadleigh. He also had a distinguished military career. The Club runs social rides which are led by a dedicated group including Chris, Kate, Farhad, Fiona, Gale and Benson. The main social ride on Sundays usually begins at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. Currently, we’re also running regular rides on Wednesdays (gentle), Thursdays (leg spinner) and Fridays (women). Something for everyone. French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, I hope you are enjoying the crazy weather we have been experiencing. Apologies for missing last month’s news, I had my house move and everything was in boxes at that time. Ok let’s give you all an up-date: Pamela who did her 80th birthday 80 mile bike ride, raised £900, which was brilliant, thank you Pamela, Pamela is also one of our volunteers along with her husband Graham, Graham does some strimming for us while Pamela helps clean and feed the animals. Debbie who did her scarecrow fundraiser raised £450, so a Big thank you to both ladies. Our BBQ open day in July also went well, over 120 people came along and it was lovely to see families interacting with our rescued animals on the day, our animals loved the extra attention and activity. The nice thing for me to hear on our open day by many people was what super condition our animals all looked in. One of the photos was a family with Minstrel our donkey. Thank you to Tesco in Sudbury for supplying our buns and thank you to Perrywood garden centre for their £30 plant voucher. While thanking people, our helpers and our BBQ cook did a great job, well done team. I gave a talk to the Hadleigh wives club one evening in June and met some lovely ladies, I did see a few of the ladies from the club came along on our open day and it looked like they were enjoying their visit and our BBQ. We are looking for a volunteer handy man, who can spare us a morning a week to help with the up keep and small jobs on the grounds along with repairs. Can you find a bit of your time to give us? I would really appreciate your help, if so please give me a call on the number below. Monks Eleigh Fete: We had a stand at the fete that Sharon lead the way with and did a great job for us, giving locals a look at the work we do, as you can see in the photo. Helpers who came along to give Sharon a hand was, Pamela, Graham, Debbie and Jackie. The Fete and dog show went well and even though I was not there, because I had to tend to our animals on the farm, it sounds like the fete was a success and a good day for visitors, such a shame I could not be in both places, looks like a missed a lovely day out. Our yearly 100 club has re started with prizes starting from £50 first prize, we have a monthly draw and a bonus prize at Christmas. Quiz Night is on its way: 22nd October at the Ansell centre in Hadleigh, Fish and chips with a great night of fun to be had, what more could you want. Make a note in your diary, we will start taking bookings in September. Work/position available for one or two weekend mornings a week, if little or no experience, do not worry, training will be given. This is a great opportunity to become part of our small team and work with our beautiful animals. Reliability is essential and for more information please call me, my number is below. Ragwort, it is going crazy again this year in our fields, we are sort of on top of it in some fields, but could do with some volunteering help to clear more from our horses and donkeys fields. Bags, little ragwort forks gloves and barrows are given for you to ‘mosey’ round the fields with our animals and pick up what you see. Rotary Review Club News: The new Rotary year commenced on 1st July and at the meeting a week later new President Richard Whiting was installed as was Vice President Graham Parker and we wish them an enjoyable year in office. Many thanks go to outgoing President Ian Burne who has worked particularly hard to help sustain the Club through 2 very difficult years. Glenn Abbassi and David Stokes retain their positions as Secretary and Treasurer respectively. As reported in the last issue a Defibrillator was installed at Londis in Lady Lane and Rotarians were very pleased to assist Mrs Jan Devey with this project which was completed with the help of a full grant from Hadleigh Town Council. Obituaries: Members have been deeply saddened by the deaths of two members within a month of each other. They were also born within 3 or 4 months of each other as well. Honorary member Derek Cranston was a founder member of the Club and also a past President. He played a full part in Club activities and also held other offices over the years until he was unable to attend through ill health. He was then awarded Honorary membership to preserve his long connection with the Club. Before retirement Derek and his wife Carole owned a printing business and looked after the printing and publishing requirements of the Club. Thank you for your service, Derek. Geoffrey Cooley came much later to Hadleigh Rotary Club when he and Rosemary moved here to be near their children. Geoffrey was a Paul Harris Fellow, one of the higher honours of Rotary named after the organisations founder and awarded for services to Rotary. He had been a member of a number of Clubs including Ipswich Orwell, Tiptree and Newmarket as he moved around the area in his capacity as a branch manager for Lloyds Bank. In all the clubs he held office of either President, Treasurer or both but he spent his retirement years at Hadleigh where he was always happy to join in and help with all the activities. Both will be sadly missed and members thoughts are with Carole, Rosemary and their families. Ukraine Crisis: Bulletin No 4 - Rotary teams are helping in all parts of Ukraine and need money to support all the refugees. One town in the west of the country has a population of 70,000 but this has been more than doubled by 100,000 refugees! Rotary Clubs in Kyiv now have a UK bank account to which donations may be sent. In Moldova Rotary is directly supporting 30 refugee centres catering for 5000 people but a further 35000 are in need of help. The Rotary Fellowship of Healthcare Professionals is providing support in many parts of Ukraine and needs more helpers. Hadleigh Rotary has recently sent more donations to the Rotary Clubs in Kyiv and is arranging to contact and help refugees now domiciled in Hadleigh. The Hadleigh Historian Issue 71 (August-September 2022) While compiling his book Small Town Duty: Hadleigh's Great War (forthcoming), Nigel Crisp researched the life of Private Harry Durant, who died as a prisoner-ofwar held by the Turkish Army. It was then that Nigel came across Private Durrant's nephew, Gunner Hammond, who befell a similar fate nearly thirty years later in the Second World War as a prisoner of the Japanese. *Errand boy to Hell Ship: the story of Gunner Frederick Spencer Hammond' of Angel Street is a harrowing tale, which is illustrated with some personal documents including the last telegram that he sent to his wife Violet. Nigel dedicates this article to the memory of Desmond Hammond (1929-2000) who, at the age of 12, said goodbye to his father Frederick Hammond and by the end of the war, was left to imagine the hardship, traumas and suffering that his father must have endured. Octavius Blinkhorn, secretary to a Manchester-based organisation, the Central Association for Stopping the Sale of Intoxicating Liquors on Sundays (CASSILS), would have expected disruption to a meeting in a large port town like Ipswich but not in the small rural town of Hadleigh. In October 1881, the society was just beginning to promote its aims throughout Suffolk, having spent the previous month touring in Essex. ‘Uproar and confusion at CASSILS public meeting' tells of the events at Hadleigh Town Hall and afterwards at the White Lion Hotel in High Street, where Blinkhorn had set up his campaign headquarters. Much of the disruption was caused by the actions of Blinkhorn himself and ended only when he published a letter of apology in the East Anglian Daily Times. On this coming Saturday 1 October, The Friends of St Mary's Church will be holding the Annual John Bloomfield Lecture with speaker Chris Parkinson, an expert on stained-glass windows. Chris has made a comprehensive survey of the windows and will use his own impressive photographs to illustrate the talks, which will include processes involved in making stained glass and its history. It is hoped that there will be an opportunity for Chris to guide visitors around the building's windows including the sanctus-bell window in the west wall of the nave, which is featured on the front cover of this issue. Jane Richardson completes an early 20th century tour of shops and services in part 3 of 'Eddie Botwright's Hadleigh. This popular series is based on Eddie's written memoirs and illustrated with old photographs from Jane's father's collection, which is now in Hadleigh Archive. In this article, Eddie takes us to meet the characters that live in the streets that run north, east and south off High Street. The Hadleigh Historian does not want the town's recent past to slip away without being recorded and would like readers to contribute their memories of not-so-long-ago. What was Hadleigh like when you were a child? How has the town changed since you first moved here? Although the first half of the term was short, we packed in a lot of activities. Of course, the Jubilee has been a historic time which we hope the children will remember from both activities in school and the local community. Our chef, Mrs King, made some amazing cakes for everyone to share on the field and give three cheers for her majesty. We had a few kings and queens on the playground to help us feel a little more royal. Hadleigh Show coming back also gave us the opportunity to get involved and we won awards for our art and poetry. Year One continued their learning about royalty. They’ve been taking their lessons outside as much as possible! Year Two Miss Brinkley’s class learnt about Kenya as part of their topic work and worked very hard to complete their KS1 assessments. They kept busy learning some great painting / mark making skills too. Year Three Beech Class did a great job improving their football and tennis skills. RE has included an exciting re-telling of Jonah’s story and an actual Pentecost party! Which were also linked to making some amazing mosaic pictures in art. Year Four Our year four girls enjoyed great success and have been an amazing team at football festivals this term. Other members of the class have made a great start litterpicking, as members of the lunch time EcoClub. Year Five Year Five were extremely successful in completing their Bikeability training, whilst our Junior Road Safety Officers planned and delivered a brilliant road safety session to the youngest members of the school. They’ve also been getting creative in making figures in the style of Giacometti, linking this to some of the sports we’ll soon see at the Commonwealth Games. Year Six Working hard to prepare for the KS2 SATs didn’t prevent Year 6 from competing in tournaments, such as netball. The whole school has also enjoyed assemblies from military personnel. SSgt Mills and LCpl Marsh spoke with the children about looking after the helicopters at Wattisham Airfield, whilst Sgt Hargreaves has visited to talk about Armed Forces Day. The children are now busy preparing competition entries to help celebrate. Closer to home, we now have a little orchard planted on the field and children have been challenged to create a ‘Greened Up Patch’ for their class, with planted up re-cycled containers. We look forward to seeing what they can grow by the end of term! The second half of the term saw a very welcome return to Sports Day events with parents welcomed back to share in the fun. winning team but everyone had a great time. Yrs 5 and 6 had fun producing a musical performance: ‘We’re all going on a summer holiday’ – sharing some great songs and jokes with family and friends and showing some superb singing, dancing and acting skills. Children learning keyboard skills with Band Academy also shared their pieces in a music assembly. It was really impressive to see how confidently they performed. Every class has enjoyed a visit out of school this term… Early Years children loved freedom and fun on a visit to Pipers Vale Gymnastics Centre. Children delighted in jumping into the safety pits and also showed great daring in walking on the balance beams. Year One enjoyed a visit to Hedingham Castle, enriching their learning about castles. The fun continued back at school as they had a banquet in the hall and jousted on space hopper horses in the playground. Year Two made a visit to a local farm: Hollow Trees. Here they learned a great deal about how we grow our food and took part in lots of fun activities. The class have also continued to enjoy their swimming sessions right to the last day of term. Another castle - this time Colchester Castle - was visited by Year 3. Their learning focus was about the Romans, so it was a superb place for them to learn more about the amazing technologies and achievements of the Romans. Year Four’s visit continued to focus on a historical theme. This time it was the Victorian era explored on a visit to Christchurch Manor in Ipswich. All the children got involved with activities to help further their understanding of Victorian life, including making their own butter. Music making was the aim for Year Five’s outing to Trinity Park, Ipswich, as they joined over 300 other local primary school children at the Suffolk County Music WCET Fiesta day. They played four pieces as a part of this huge children’s orchestra to an audience of 300 adults, together with a song in four parts learned on the day. Quite an achievement! The children also played in their recorder ensemble for parents and the rest of the school back at St Mary’s. At the time of writing the class is also planning a visit to the SUEZ energy plant at Great Blakenham to finish off their learning about recycling. Children of Year 6 had a fantastic activity day after completing their SATs. They visited Boxford Spinney and enjoyed lots of outdoors challenges including putting up tents, building a campfire, cooking outdoors, archery and more. In the final week of term they are looking forward to a celebration pizza and ice-cream party, a Leavers’ Service and final assembly at which we will celebrate all their achievements and say a fond farewell.

Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club I hope everyone enjoyed and survived the exceptional hot weather during July. Our Wednesday afternoon sessions at Lavenham Village Hall from 2pm until 4.30pm have been well attended and we have even had a few members from another local Carpet Bowls Club who are unable to use their own hall as it is under renovation. However we could do with some more players to join our Thursday sessions which are 7.30pm until 10pm. We usually try to play a friendly home match once a month at this session, but our last home match was cancelled, as the other team was unable to raise enough players - some Clubs are still struggling to get back to full strength. Oddly, our bank Santander has started calling up Club Officers and asking them some strange questions, not sure if this is part of Santander and other banks reassessing bank accounts that do not earn them money. It is essential that Club's have a bank account to run their Clubs efficiently, so if any other Clubs have encountered this and know what is going on, perhaps they could let me know, by emailing me on mazzabeatham@yahoo.com Of course we are lucky to have a large hall at Lavenham which can accommodate extra players and new members are always welcome. Lavenham Sinfonia is well advanced in the planning of the exciting autumn concert, the final concert of the 2022 season, which is on Sunday September 18th September at 19:00hrs at Lavenham Church. In keeping with its policy to invite different guest conductors for each concert, Michael Coleby will lead the Sinfonia. Michael is a London based conductor who has a particular interest in contemporary music and collaborating with composers. He set up the Janus Ensemble in 2014 and made his professional debut conducting the Deutsche Sinfonie – Berlin in 2017. Since then, he has worked as the assistant conductor of London Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC Concert Orchestra. The concert opens with the Overture to Weber’s opera Der Feischutz which was premiered in 1821 at the Schauspielhaus in Berlin and is one of Weber’s most well-known works. It quickly became and international success and far surpassed Weber’s expectations. It is followed by Gustav Mahler’s 5 Ruckert Songs with the soloist Daniela Bechly. Born in Hamburg, Daniela established her career as a lyric soprano in opera houses throughout Germany, Austria, and Switzerland before coming to live in the UK. Her repertoire in opera, concert work and recording spans the Baroque to contemporary composers. Daniela is very actively involved with the development of the Pimlott Foundation, which she established in the name of her late husband. The five songs are drawn from poems written by Friedrich Ruckert and were set to music by Mahler in the summer of 1901. The first four songs received their first performance in Vienna in January 1905. The fifth song “Liebst du um Schonheit” was not orchestrated by Mahler but by Max Puttmann an employee of the first publisher after the composer’s death in 1911. The songs were not intended to be a cycle and the Lieder were published independently of each other, connected only by the poetry and common themes. They were, however, later published together and are most often now performed together. The concert concludes with Robert Schumann’s fourth Symphony which was originally composed in 1841, but the composer heavily revised the work, and it was first published in this revised form in 1851. Chronologically by the date the Symphony should be Schumann’s third as the “Rhenish” symphony now known as No.3 was composed in 1850 but the revision of No.4 in 1851 led to it being labelled the fourth. The symphony is in four movements which usually follow each other without a pause. Please do reserve the date for the concert which I am sure will be a great finale to the Sinfonia’s season. Hadleigh Garden Club A host of Hostas greeted our members for the July meeting. Mickfield Hostas have specialised in growing and exhibiting for two generations. Mel, our speaker, was so enthusiastic and entertained us with amusing anecdotes about dealing with slugs and snails. The variety of plants that were for sale are shown in this picture... all healthy and slug free. Tomato blight is similar to potato blight and spread by air borne spores, so keep these two crops well apart. Dark brown spots appear on the stems, soon spreading to leaves and fruit. The fruit is not poisonous but soon becomes inedible. Infected plants need to be hot bin composted. If not available incinerate or dispose of at council tip. Tomatoes and cucumbers need watering every day, water the soil not the foliage and feed once a week with tomato feed. Let’s hope by the time you read this the hot weather has given way to welcome rain. Our August meeting on Monday 8th is “Gardening for Wildlife”, something close to the heart of many gardeners. Decoding AED and CPR To mark the arrival of several new defibrillators in the town, the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre recently hosted the first of several free training sessions. Instruction came from Community First Responder, Trevor Sheldrick ably assisted by fellow CFR, Yvonne Free. The free session was well attended by local residents keen to understand how these automated external defibrillator (AED) machines work. The group was given clear step by step instructions from the moment a person in need is discovered to the arrival of the alerted emergency service. This included the initial use of the emergency lifesaving procedure, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to the application of the AED. The invitation to practice on dummy torsos was first taken up my Mayor Gordon McLeod (photo) and followed by most of the other attendees anxious to perfect the art of CPR and experience the AED’s instructions first hand. Participants agreed that it was a very helpful, instructive and worthwhile session. Jan Devey highlighted the outside location of the new AED machines at; Londis Garage, the Hadleigh Cricket Club and the Hadleigh Feoffment Alms Houses. The Town Council map, showing the location of all the AEDs in the town, will be circulated to all households in the September copy of the Hadleigh Community News. However, Trevor emphasised the need for everyone to make a mental note of the AED’s whereabouts just in case they did not have access to the map when the emergency occurred. Swift Success In 2019 when local residents came together to discuss ways to combat the growing climate crisis, all agreed that despite the scale of the problem, something should be done. The consensus was that any new group should take positive action to demonstrate that even small measures widely adopted can make a big difference. From these early discussions, Hadleigh Environmental Action Team (HEAT) was born. HEAT have gone on to organise several exciting projects that tackle various areas of environmental concern, for example wildlife. Wildlife in general is struggling. Loss of habitat and food shortages are to blame and so HEAT decided to focus on the plight of the swift. This amazing bird migrates from Africa to Northern Europe during the summer months. As a supreme aerialist the swift has few natural predators, but despite this they are in serious decline. Their numbers have fallen by 58% over the last 25 years and this is largely because their opportunity to find suitable nesting sites has dramatically been reduced. Swifts prefer to nest in the eaves and loft spaces of buildings and while older properties tend to have lots of nooks and crannies, modern building techniques and materials deny swifts access. So HEAT, with funding from Hadleigh Town Council and the support of several residents set about constructing and installing 100 swift nest boxes across the town. We took advice from Save our Suffolk Swifts who gave us some good tips, but they also said that we would need to be patient as it could take time for the swifts to find and then occupy the boxes. They were right. During the first year we had no reports of swift activity, however, two years on and we are starting to see results. We have had reports of swifts nesting at three of our sites and thanks to Peter Cutts we have this amazing photograph of a swift chick in one of the boxes at the Royal British Legion on George Street. We are still a long way from solving the problem of global climate change, but projects like this help to demonstrate that together we can make a difference. Recent fatal road accident at junction of Aldham Road / Lady Lane: The Mayor reported that he, the Town Council, Suffolk Highways, HABIT (see below) & the Coroner’s Court are working with the police to investigate ways to slow traffic and make certain earmarked areas safer for both drivers and pedestrians. 4.2 BABERGH & MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL Hadleigh Market: After the public consultation and a successful pilot, the scheme is being extended for a further eight months – until year end – enabling start-up businesses, entrepreneurs and creatives to showcase. It is hoped to make the temporary road closure permanent. Further/alternative space is being looked at and Fr Jo has offered use of the churchyard (owned by the church, managed by the Town Council). Extra days (which are within our Charter) and themed days are being considered. Parking Strategy: Consultation events continue. Kathryn will arrange for Parking Strategy Officers to come to speak at a future HCF. It was noted that the Bridge Street Car Park needs to be retained as such – it has been invaluable on such days as Hidden Gardens and will continue to be a huge benefit to the town. BDC Attendance: Richard is no longer attending. Hopefully Tabitha or Laura Butters will be regular attendees. 4.3 VISIT HADLEIGH Website: Remember to let Jane or Stuart know of any planned events so they can be uploaded. Gordon is also happy to cover at need. 4.4 HADLEIGH & BOXFORD PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP More doctors are now available so face-to- face and telephone appointments have increased and there is now extra cover for telephones. Appointments can now be booked online from 7pm the night before the day of appointment. Covid, travel advice & country requirements available on website: please do not call the Practice for this information. NHS England have paused all Covid jabs at Practices until the autumn so please DO NOT telephone asking for this service.There is a walk-in service at Ipswich hospital if you have the appropriate eligibility (75+ or clinically vulnerable). Improvements to website are ongoing. The Practice is currently experiencing some staff shortages due to Covid and asks all patients to bear with them until numbers are back up to normal. If you have Covid, you should undertake self-care unless you are seriously ill (breathing difficulties etc). You should avoid attending the Practice where possible. A good guide to self-care is www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/selfcare-and-treatments Kathryn asked if there was any way of monitoring the surgery car park for “unauthorised” parking. PPG will discuss various options including ANPR and using a private company to manage it at no, or minimal, cost to the Practice. Provision of more cycle racks is underway. 4.5 St MARYS CHURCH The profit made at Hidden Gardens will almost exactly cover the cost of repairing deteriorating window grilles and repairing all broken stained glass. The Sacristy (downstairs) refurbishment has been tendered for and has come in at c. £58k +VAT. The Flowers, Music & Art Festival was a great success and a number of well attended concerts have taken place. A series of half-hour, lunchtime piano recitals will start at 1pm on Weds 3 August and run every Weds in August. It is hoped to extend these further, if successful.

St Mary’s, in partnership with David Olive (and others), who works with the Suffolk Refugee Service, is welcoming Ukrainians for English lessons and hospitality. Pop-Up-Picnics will start on Thursday 28 July and take place every Thursday in August particularly aimed at children who receive free school meals. All are welcome (but children must attend with their carers). St Mary’s will provide food (sandwiches, cakes etc). St Marys is also hosting Cooking Outdoors in the Deanery Garden in conjunction with the Leisure Centre and others. The Lime Tree story-boards are proving very popular (especially the scandals !) and it is planned to add to these boards with details of the finds being uncovered on the Deanery wall during John Cunningham’s restoration work. The Diocese is covering the cost of refurbishing the Dean’s Library – the historical middle floor of the Tower where the Oxford Movement flourished. Tours are planned to re-start in due course and Roger Kennell’s book “The Deanery Tower through Six Centuries” is being updated with information about the old wall behind the felled lime tree and is being reprinted. 4.6 HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) Forest School: The evaluation has ended and shows it was a great success. It is hoped to run another session in September/October. River work continues and there are now five or six monitoring stations agreed with local landowners for data gathering. Tree work: A local landowner has planted some 35 thousand trees and HEAT volunteers are working with them, hoping this will be the start of partnering with a wide range of farmers and landowners. Upcoming talks - 28 July, 7.30pm in St Mary’s. “Climate Change & Biodiversity: what we can do to help the planet”. Widespread speeding of both cars and motorbikes throughout Hadleigh is causing concern, frustration and anger and is clearly a potential danger. The associated vehicle noise, gatherings in car parks and intimidation of residents who try to intervene is increasing. It is not just young boys who cause the concerns – it is both sexes and all ages. Apart from the obvious nuisance and inconvenience this causes to all, there are some vulnerable elderly residents who now fear to leave their houses. This was brought up at a recent Police Forum meeting and the first step in dealing with it is reporting. The more reports received, the more the police will be able to act. So far, only sporadic intervention has been possible, due to sporadic reporting. The police need the public’s assistance to enable them to respond so HABIT has been formed. Led by the Mayor, there will be widespread publicity on how to report incidents and encouragement to do so. A simple guide will be produced. Fr Jo was uncomfortable with the “us and them” approach and, although he understands the problem, thinks there may be a way of connecting with them rather than demonising them. Dear Sir, I feel I must reply to Cllr Dawson’s report in last month’s HCN. I wish to address two items: Corks Lane and the Council Tax Energy Rebate. Cllr Dawson makes a reference to the recent cabinet meeting that approved the plan for Corks Lane so that redevelopment work can start in a few weeks time – which, until deciding to leave the coalition and go into opposition, the Conservative group supported fully. Indeed, all decisions relating to Corks Lane prior to Spring this year, including the setting up of the joint venture with Norse, were made by a cabinet that had a Conservative majority with my then casting vote. Redevelopment of the site was a commitment in the 2019 Conservative Group Manifesto, on which Cllr Dawson was elected. Cabinet endorsed the increase in the debt threshold, in recognition of increased construction and material costs. Cllr Dawson states that ‘the proceedings were halted as we were not given the opportunity to challenge’. In fact I had to adjourn the meeting for 5 minutes due to disruptive behaviour, resuming when things had calmed down. Increased security costs due to delays in the project were a result of unavoidable problems with the planning process, which have now been resolved. We have considered an open market sale but there are significant redevelopment challenges which mean that a commercial developer would find it difficult to achieve a satisfactory profit margin on the project; hence the low value of the site. Indeed, in her report Cllr Dawson recognises that it is not a risk that a commercial developer would want. We are not constrained by that and are able to carry out the work. That it will either break even or make a modest profit, more likely the latter, is not very different from the viability assessment we had in the past – one which was supported by the Conservative group. With regard to the Energy Rebate, apart from being very poorly written, her claims simply aren’t true. Firstly, it is nothing to do with the Winter Fuel Allowance. Secondly, it is a new payment that has not been and will not be paid by cheque. The majority of eligible council tax payers, who pay by direct debit, have had rebate payments made to their bank accounts. We are now paying those who don’t use direct debit. This requires them to provide us with bank account details and we must carry out verification checks so that payment can be made. My mother was quite deaf but with her ‘lip reading’ and asking her family to distinctly speak with her ‘face to face’ and slowly was so helpful. Her insistence was ‘never speaking with our mouths full’ so as not to ‘chew over our words’. I have tinnitus, a hissing sound in my ears, which affects my hearing. I generally however understand most people, and they understand me. The art of speaking well is, if possible, to look straight at the person, to open one's mouth and also to talk in simple terms. The worst communicators, I find, are those that fail to open their mouths and chew over their words and there are many of whom have this habit. Also they may after or before each comment say “you know” repeatedly or instead of pausing between each sentence or comment add an “um” or an “ah” and talk about such words as “buder” (instead of butter) or “thinkin” (instead of thinking). I find talking with most relatives and friends over the telephone is fine as those talking instinctively know they are to speak slowly and in simple terms. I have had the pleasure for the last two years to help some Nepalese people improve their English language which has been great from all points of view. I believe we now have Ukrainians in Hadleigh who will presumably need suitable help to enable them to communicate well in our language. I hope the comments above will be of help to those who would wish to speak with everyone who has managed to enter our country and will need our help. I am sure suitable contacts will be made in our welcoming town and plans are made for us to help others with their learning or improving their English. John Cunningham

News from Kersey School Acorns (Reception, Years 1 and 2) We have had the most exciting two weeks in Acorn Class. Firstly, we had the proud responsibility of growing and taking care of our very own caterpillars which we are pleased to say have all grown into the most beautiful butterflies. The children took the butterflies over a flowery spot in the church yard and released them into the wild. We spoke a lot about the importance of animals in the world and allowing them to be free and grow in their natural habitat. The children took great pride in this and were amazed to see their final transformation. We have also been designing and creating our own camouflage theme t-shirts as our art project has been looking at camouflage artists. The children have discovered patterns and techniques they can use to make themselves look almost invisible against different backgrounds. This has also linked nicely into our work about animals, their life cycles and their habitats. We have focused on exploring why some animals are camouflage and why some do not need to be. As well as this, we have learnt that frogs begin their life as tadpoles and are often only camouflaged when they are fully grown adults. Finally, a huge well done to all the children who participated in sports day! The children in Acorn class were committed to trying hard but had a great attitude towards success, failure and team support! Mrs Cousins and I are exceptionally proud of you! Miss Pratt Oaks (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6) The past two weeks have seen the return of Mrs Quinn and our fantastic Art lessons. This week was no exception; we created our own clay fish, which looked incredible! We will be adding colour to them in the coming weeks. We have been writing our own biographies in English, based on the learning around David Attenborough’s biography. We have used what we have learned to make our writing the best it can be. It has been a great opportunity to share our knowledge about other famous individuals who are passionate about the environment. Sports day is always a great event in the school calendar and the perfect opportunity for the older children in the school to demonstrate how mature and sensible they can be when with their Houses. It can take a lot of patience and kindness to support others, but Mrs DP and I were impressed by how well the Oak class children looked out for their younger peers. Well done! Hadleigh and District Angling Society held the first of this year’s Open Days on Saturday 28th May. The event was a great success with 35 people participating and approximately 25 spectators. Many of the participants were trying fishing for the first time and the feedback on the day was positive from all those who attended. Society volunteers were on hand to assist participants and the refreshment table proved very popular with everyone. The next Open day will be on Saturday 13th August and we hope to see as many people as possible returning or attending for the first time.

Sudbury Citizens Advice I’m due to fly to Spain during the school summer holidays. After hearing about all the problems at airports, I’m really worried. My family have been looking forward to this and it’s cost us a lot of money. What do we do if our flight is cancelled or delayed? A lot of people will be worried after seeing the recent news about flights. If you face issues, the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk has lots of information about what to do when your flight is delayed or cancelled. If you’re already at the airport when they announce the delay, the airline should give you food and drink, access to phone calls and emails. You should also get accommodation if you’re delayed overnight (including journeys to and from the airport). Your airline might offer you vouchers to pay for these or advise you to keep receipts to claim back expenses later. They will only refund ‘reasonable’ expenses, not expensive meals or luxury hotels. What counts as a long enough delay to get this help depends on how long your flight is. A short flight only needs to be delayed two hours, whereas a flight of more than 3,500km needs to be more than four hours. Full details are on the Citizens Advice website. It’s worth knowing that if your flight is delayed for more than five hours, you don’t have to take it. The airline legally has to give you a full refund for that flight (and any onward flights and return flights if you’re part-way through a connecting journey). Talk to someone from the airline as soon as you decide you don’t want to fly. If your flight is cancelled altogether, you’ve a legal right to either a full refund or a replacement flight to get you to your destination. The refund includes any onward flights and money for a return flight if you’re part-way through a connecting journey. Ask about this at the airport if you can. Don’t just rebook another flight yourself - check with the airline first because it’s their responsibility to sort out your replacement. If you do have to rebook it yourself, keep any receipts and evidence of why the airline couldn’t do this for you, for example screenshots of live chats. If the cancellation ends up delaying you getting to your holiday by two or more hours, you’re entitled to help with costs. Check if you’re entitled to compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight. Again, this will depend on how long the delay was, the distance, and whether it’s the airline’s fault. The Citizens Advice website has details on claiming compensation for delays or cancellations from the airline. You might also be able to claim from your travel insurance – check if your policy covers this. Elmsett Primary School Goodbyes At the end of this term we said goodbye to Mrs Burdiss who is retiring after 14 years at Elmsett School. She began teaching at Elmsett in 2008 and became the Headteacher in 2013. Throughout her time at Elmsett she had been dedicated and committed in achieving the best for the children and our School. We also said goodbye to Mrs Hooper, Miss Bloomfield and Mrs Chisholm. In September we look forward to Leigh Hilton becoming our Headteacher, we also welcome Mrs Ross as Class Teacher and Mrs Hills as a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant. School Trips At the end of term all the children went on Class Trips to support and enhance their learning. Our younger children in Hedgehogs and Otters Class enjoyed a day on Felixstowe beach to support their topic Ship Ahoy! During the day they completed a scavenger hunt to find various items on the beach, they then discussed their finds back in class. KS2 children in Badgers and Owls Class went to Daws Hall Nature Reserve to support their Geography and Science learning. They enjoyed pond dipping and they learned map skills to complete an orienteering challenge. Prayer Days The children experienced two marvellous prayer days at our local churches. Their first day was at St Peters with "Prayers around the church" – exploring the altar, font, choir stalls to see what makes a church so special. They also had the opportunity to make a stained-glass window, try on the clerical robes and ring the bells. They enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the church and why certain parts of the church and its symbolism is important to Christians. The next day we attended Elmsett Methodist Church investigating the "Lord's Prayer". The prayer was split into sections and the children looked at the meaning and relevance creating crafts, sharing bread and making bookmarks as reminders. They enjoyed learning from the local community and it was great to see everyone participating and fully engaged. A huge thank you to both churches for organising this for our children. The Big Breaktime On national Childhood Day we took part in the NSPCC Big Breaktime. The children enjoyed their extended breaktime taking part in traditional games such as Hopscotch, In and Out the Dusty Bluebells, Farmers in his Den, What’s the Time Mr Wolf. The children were asked to make a donation to help support the work of the NSPCC who prevent and protect children from abuse.

The Chair asked Councillors not to continue asking questions which Councillor Dawson was not willing to answer. Mayors Monthly At the beginning of this month HTC was informed of the sad and tragic loss of Mrs Cheryl Tye. Cheryl was the former Town Council Manager for HTC but left us earlier this year. Cheryl was competing in a cycling event when she was in collision with a motor vehicle which tragically took her life. This loss has affected everybody within the council whose path crossed that of Cheryl’s. Our hearts and thoughts go out to the loved ones that Cheryl has left behind. During the past year I have attended police community forums along with other councillors from different parishes and also residents from these parishes. One of the key aspects that keeps coming up at these meetings was the rise in anti-social behaviour, not only in our town but also in the surrounding parishes. The police asked members of the public to report these incidents stating that if they don’t know of an incident they cannot respond, if it is risk critical and requires a blue light response phone 999. If however it is not risk critical we are to use the 101 service or the reporting tool on Suffolk constabularies website https://www.suffolk.police.uk/contactus/report-something/6-report-anti-social-behaviour or you can just type in Suffolk police and navigate your way through their page. For residents who do not have access to computers I will be working on something to assist you and will report back to you. Hadleigh is a wonderful town and incidents of antisocial behaviour are few and far between. Finally, this week I attended a defibrillator course held at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure, the course instructors were two of Hadleigh’s first responders Trevor and Yvonne. The course was informal and enlightening, wiping away any mystique around the use of a defibrillator, and as you may be aware these pieces of life saving equipment are popping up all over Hadleigh, also included in the course was some basic CPR training. There will be more courses being held at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure, free of charge, so I recommend getting your name on the list. Gordon McLeod, Town Mayor

Happy holidays to all our riders and their carers. I know ‘holidays’ is an euphemism for the team of Carers who visit but at least its one less trip you have to organise in a busy week. At the time of writing, our volunteers are wilting and the dogs have flopped down in the shade during the July heatwave. Luckily it was cooler for our sale Newton Green. Thank you to everyone who helped to raise over £800 plus a generous amount from an anonymous donor. If you enjoy a Rummage Sale, make sure you visit SESAW during August. We are clearing out stock which has piled up over the last two years. The marquee will be full of bargains for everyone, from pictures to pottery, books to bric a brac, furniture to flowers, DIY to DVDs. Roll up 10am – 3pm, any Saturday or Sunday in August. Arrive earlier if you wish to view the animals, the rehoming side closes at 1pm. Like many rescues, we are full up with cats, dogs and rabbits and more waiting to come in. One example is Suzanne, a tabby and white cat approximately ten years old, she was found in a distressed condition sitting in the gutter by the side of a busy road. She loves a fuss, has a healthy appetite and probably best suited as an indoor pet in an adult household. If you are looking for a new pet to share you home, we are still open 10am to 1pm, Friday to Sunday during the Summer but check first to avoid disappointment. Jubilee Celebrations at the Ansell Centre Both lunch clubs and the Memories Cafe celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee in style. The First Lunch Club enjoyed fish and chips followed by strawberries, blueberries and cream and were entertained by a selection of music from the 40s and 50s. The Wednesday Lunch Club chose quiche and salad followed by Jubilee meringues. Both these events were held indoors, but the Memories Cafe took advantage of a lovely sunny day to hold a party outside in the URC garden – see a full report elsewhere in this publication. The trustees would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to make these events so successful. And a special thank you to Sue for giving up her bank holiday to organise Jubilee themed games, quizzes and crafts for the Memories Cafe.. As you can see below, everyone had a wonderful time.

An artist’s impressions of the how the employment land could be developed (Picture BDC) An initiative to bring new workspaces to Hadleigh will move to the next stage if Babergh District Council agree a proposal for the sale of part of the land for local retail/ roadside uses to fund the wider scheme development. If agreed, up to 100% of the capital receipt will be used to deliver the scheme that could support and approximately 10 light industrial or workspace units for a range of uses including by micro and start-up businesses. The design of the scheme is based on a Menta report commissioned by Babergh District Council to understand the demand for workspaces in the area. It is hoped that the development will create around 50 full time jobs, support local skills, enhance business network development and provide much needed grow-on space for small businesses. There is also potential for employment opportunities for young people - providing a boost to the local economy as part of the council’s Economic Recovery Plan post covid. The 1.5 acres of allocated employment land, acquired as part of a S106 agreement with Persimmon Homes, who are developing 57 homes at the adjoining housing development scheme, is situated on the A1071 at Ipswich Road, Hadleigh. Since Babergh cabinet approved the concepts for the scheme back in 2021, progress has been made on the wider scheme design development, marketing proposals and pre-tenant engagement. Cllr John Ward, Babergh District Council leader and cabinet member for economic growth commented: “We know there is demand for new employment land in Hadleigh and this scheme will not only address this need but will also create a range of employment and training opportunities. “As part of both our Invest in Hadleigh programme and economic recovery plan, it is crucial that we provide opportunities for businesses to grow and innovate in our growing market towns and the wider region to build a strong economy for the future.” For more information, please visit www.babergh.gov.uk

Parish Council Below are the main matters covered during the meeting of 22 June 2022: • Public Forum Parishioners commented on the application for outline planning permission at Land North of The Street, Upper Layham. The key points made were: Layham was not considered to be a core village for purposes of development and the proposed application was for a development outside the settlement boundary in a Special Landscape Area; The proposed new road, running parallel to Upper Street, would cause light pollution and increasing traffic noise; There had been no housing need demonstrated, particularly given the proposed development in Hook Lane to provide up to 200 dwellings; There would be no economic benefit to Layham and there was insufficient local infrastructure; The report submitted stated that there had been no major accidents along Upper Street. However, traffic flow had increased significantly over the past six years and there had actually been several accidents requiring police attendance. Councillors then discussed the planning application in detail. They noted that Policy CS2 of Babergh’s Core Strategy stated that development outside the settlement boundary would only be permitted “in exceptional circumstances subject to a proven justified need”; there did not appear to be a “proven justified need”. It was agreed that the Parish Council should object strongly to the application. County Council report Councillor Woods commented on the lack of action to improve the footpath between Upper Layham and Hadleigh, given SCC’s ‘Keep Moving Suffolk Walking Challenge’ and its ongoing commitment to walking initiatives. Quiet Lanes The Quiet Lanes signs would be put up shortly. It was noted that the pole installed by SCC at the top of Water Lane was higher than necessary; this would be addressed. • Annual Return Following completion of the internal audit, Sections 1 and 2 of the Annual Return (Governance Statement and Accounting Statements) were approved. • Emergency Plan Councillor Curran had been contacted by the Suffolk Joint Emergency Planning Unit, which was offering parish councils the opportunity to take part in a desk-top exercise to test the validity of their emergency plans. As it had already been decided to carry out a review of the plan later in the year, it was agreed that this would be a useful exercise. Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Fete The event had been extremely successful; Councillor Woods proposed a vote of thanks to the Fete Committee and all the volunteers. The Events Committee would be meeting shortly to discuss how best to distribute the funds raised. Noticeboards As agreed at the last meeting, the noticeboards at the top of Mill Lane in Upper Layham, and near the Queen’s Head in Lower Layham, would be refurbished. The noticeboard at the Recycling Centre was beyond repair and would be replaced. It was suggested that a larger notice board could be located on the Playing Field. A working party was formed to investigate the various possibilities and costs. Layham Playgroup Active August We hope you will join us for a bit of fun during the summer holidays. We are running Active August, which is a fundraising event you can do from home. The choice of challenge is up to you. Whether you wish to set a challenge for everyday of the holiday – skip 20 times, do 10 star jumps, or walk the dog. Or you may wish to set a weekly walking challenge. Or even a goal to reach by the end of the holiday like learn to ride a push bike or to swim. The choice is entirely yours. Layham Events Group Layham Platinum Jubilee Fete Update Thanks to the generosity of the many enthusiastic supporters of our Fete, we are delighted to be able to offer local groups the opportunity to apply for a grant of up to £500 to support a non-profit making project. Our next event will be a Festive Fair to be held in the village hall later in the year; please contact us if you are interested in helping on layhamevents@gmail.com Quiet Lanes established in Layham and Shelley The villages of Layham and Shelley have designated some lengths of roadway as Quiet Lanes as part of a county-wide project. A limited number of signs are appearing locally to indicate entry and exit points, together with a few ‘repeater’ signs. The roadways in question are Shelley Road Layham; Layham Road Shelley; North Hill (from Shelley to Stoke Road); Water Lane and a small part of Mill Lane in Upper Layham. Quiet Lanes are routes where walkers, runners, cyclists, horse riders and motorists can use rural roads in the knowledge that they will all show consideration for each other. EXPECT and RESPECT are the key words that all road users should have in mind. A designated Quiet Lane will have green advisory signs at either end to show users that the road is a shared space. These green signs also set out (through their design) the hierarchy of priority on the road – pedestrians first and motor vehicles last. Most of the signs are in place – the outstanding sign at the top of Water Lane will be completed shortly. If these lanes prove to be successful and local people observe ‘a positive difference’ it may be possible to extend the network in the future. Sports and Wellbeing Week at Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School Early July saw Sports and Wellbeing Week in the school, which we are delighted to say we have been able to hold in a similar way to pre-covid times! The week began on Monday morning with our field events in the children’s buddy pairs. This was followed on Monday afternoon with a Steel Pan workshop. Tuesday morning saw our Sports Day on the Village Green with great sportsmanship by children and adults alike. On Thursday afternoon we were visited by Harshaprabha, a member of the Buddhist Faith who talked to the children, answered questions, and demonstrated meditation. Friday was another active day with all classes taking part in a Quidditch experience.

Hadleigh Nursing Home fete cancelled It is with regret that we have had to cancel our planned garden fete at Hadleigh Nursing Home that was scheduled for Saturday, August 20. We hope to organise another large-scale community event in the run-up to Christmas.

Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Rock Steady Music School Learning an instrument is proving so much fun at Bildeston with the arrival of Rock Steady Music School. Children across all year groups have chosen from the electric guitar, keyboard, drums or vocals and have enjoyed playing in a happy, supportive environment with their friends. Spotlight on Science Trip Children in Kingfisher class enjoyed a day of Science through Technical Theatre workshops at the Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich. Their chosen workshops supported their learning on Light and Sound. Year 3/4 pupils from our federated school, Whatfield Primary came along with us too! Doorstep Theatre Festival This festival is designed to make high-quality arts activities accessible to primary schools by lessening the restraints of rural isolation and the financial implications that come with visiting an arts venue. Our KS1 children enjoyed a performance of ‘Party’ in school, which was then followed up by some great workshops the following week. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves! Sport Report this term KS2 children have enjoyed two cricket events, one at Hadleigh Cricket ground, the other at Ransomes Park Sports Centre in Ipswich. The Hadleigh event was supported by all of the local Hadleigh schools, an opportunity for our children to catch up with friends some of them will be seeing at high school next term. The other played against teams from across the county. They all had a great time. U11 High 5 Netball was enjoyed by a small team of Kestrel children at Hadleigh High School and a group of 8 children enjoyed the Quad Kids festival at Northgate Sports Centre, Ipswich, where they represented the commonwealth country ‘Grenada’. Hadleigh Rugby Club have also been into school so that the KS2 children could enjoy Rugby sessions on Monday afternoons across 3 weeks. Sports Afternoon What a wonderful afternoon shared by so many families and friends in the school grounds. A picnic was followed by an afternoon of sport. Green Griffins Soar for Greatness! (Reported by Tyler) Hadleigh Community Primary School Sports Day took place on the 8th, 12th and 13th July 2022 to celebrate the school’s sporting abilities. It took place on the Hadleigh Community Primary School field. The four teams that competed were the Red Rabbits, Yellow Yetis, Blue Bats and the winners, the Green Griffins. The Green Griffins, in total, have won six Sports Days since 2008. In the year 4, 5 and 6 Sports Day, there was a gymnastics display team, a baton team and afterwards, School Council made a speech. The Year 4 events were the obstacle race, the skipping race, the sprint race and finally the relay race. Years 5 and 6 had the same races, but the tracks were longer. “The best time of the year, for sure!” stated one Year 5 pupil. If someone was to come first in a race, they would have scored 5 points, second place getting 3 points, third place getting 2 points, and all other places got one point. A fund raiser took place in all Sports Days and in total, raised approximately £700. Each year group had a trophy for the winning team, and the overall winners (the Green Griffins) had a trophy, too. This was the first time in three years the parents came to watch, but they had to go in the sun so that the children could be safe from the heat (they went in the shade). Overall, the competition was tough and everyone tried their hardest, but the Green Griffins won, once again.

We cannot believe that another academic year is over! We had great fun celebrating the Queen’s platinum jubilee and this culminated in a family picnic during which the children were each given a jubilee medal as a keepsake. The lovely weather led to lots of outdoor play, including investigating solar panelled fountains and practicing our aim with water jets.

We began the term with our level 2 elite gymnasts in action at the regional general gymnastics apparatus finals. They all performed really well and a special mention must go to Annabel Quinn who finished 3rd on bars and to Emilia Tiernay who became the regional level 2 beam champion. Later in the term we had several gymnasts in the level 4 finals and Beatrice Catchpole is now the regional level 4 vault champion. In level 5 Evie Cooper finished 3rd on beam and Nicole Peddelty left with one bronze, one silver and as the beam and floor champion. Well done to all who competed. At the end of the term we hosted our club competition, the first since 2019. All gymnasts were invited to participate and we had almost 300 entries. The competition ran across 2 days and it was fantastic to see all of the gymnasts rise to the occasion of performing in front of an audience. We hope that those who came to watch enjoyed being in the gym and can’t wait for next year’s competition. Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline & Charity Shop Having successfully delivered several loads of support to Ukraine the Charity has decided to purchase our own Mini Bus that will be used to take a regular supply of specifically requested items to our Partners in Poland who will then taken the delivery into Ukraine and continue to evacuate those too ill, disabled or immobile to leave by any other means. We constantly find that we are the only Charity reaching out to people in the rurally located small villages, many people who are still living without the basic amenities we take for granted. Many of the people we support are those that have lost everything but continue to work together to help each other in this time of crisis. With a long cold winter ahead of them I have been tasked to try and find some good quality used footwear for both adults and children. We need Workboots, Walking Boots/Shoes and good quality Trainers. Rubber products such as wellingtons cannot be used as they just split in the sub zero temperatures. In these areas people are having to walk miles everyday just to try and get some basic supplies as there is no longer any public transport and those who have cars are few and far between. Others are working to clear rubble and make damaged buildings safe. Despite this and all the other problems they are currently deal with, no one gives up and we are determined to continue to help as much as possible. We continue to raise funds via our online Charity Shop on Ebay. Please do visit the shop and see the diverse range of products we are offering for sale and of course if you are local it may be possible to arrange collection/delivery to save on postage costs. Hadleigh Tennis bring home the trophies The first recorded match between Hadleigh and Bildeston tennis clubs was played in 1881. That match was recreated 130 years later in 2011 when the players dressed in traditional Edwardian costume and has become an annual event since then. We were keen to resume the competition after Covid and this year the tournament took place at Bildeston on 17th June, then the hottest day of the year (thankfully in standard tennis attire Phew !!!). We had Men’s and Ladies’ doubles matches, organised by our team captain Sandy Claireaux, to compete for the trophies and after the main tournament we played some friendly mixed doubles. Hadleigh men retained the cup and the ladies regained the silver plate after losing to Bildeston in 2019. The evening was concluded with a very handsome spread of refreshments provided by our hosts and some genial conversation. All in all a very enjoyable event on a perfect evening and we would like to thank Martin Rodgers and Gerdine Cubitt for organising and hosting this event. Bring on the next one! Why not come and join Hadleigh Tennis Club? We have Club Play sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6.30 pm and 8.00 pm and Sunday mornings between 9.30 am and 11.30 am. Summer holiday activities to support families over the school break An array of activities are planned this summer holiday to provide entertainment and support to families across Babergh and Mid Suffolk. From adventure days to swimming, cooking classes to woodwork there is something to keep everyone occupied over the summer holidays thanks to Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils and partners. The mixed programme of activities aims to help families over the summer as part of the councils’ commitment to health and wellbeing. Explore Outdoor will once again be getting children out and about in nature, while Kinetic Science will be encouraging children to learn through fun with some hands-on experiments. There will also be a variety of cooking lessons provided by The Food Museum, Explore Outdoor and Debenham Sports and Leisure – all supporting the councils’ ongoing ambition to combat holiday hunger. Additionally, there will be sessions for swimming, football, arts and crafts, dodgeball, and filmmaking workshops at locations across the districts including Brantham, Claydon, Hadleigh, Stowmarket and Sudbury. Free places are allocated on a needs basis – local schools identify those in receipt of free school meals, or who may be eligible for other reasons. However, children who do not meet the criteria for free places are welcome to participate for a small fee. Babergh’s cabinet member for communities, Cllr Mary McLaren, said: “I am so pleased we are once again able to work with local companies in the community to offer so many fun activities to keep children entertained over the holidays. The aim of these activities is to encourage everyone to keep fit and healthy, and to ensure that no child is left hungry or lonely over the holidays. Golf Captain celebrates a fantastic turnout for prostate screening event at Stoke by Nayland Resort Last month Cyril Williams, with the support of his charity team, held a successful Prostate Cancer Screening event that saw over 160 men in attendance receive a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. Working in partnership with local trusts and Prostate Cancer UK, Williams is using his term as captain of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer among members of the club and Cyril Williams with the PSA event local communities in a bid organisers. Wendy Hodgkinson, Sarah Viner Men’s health, mental and physical, has long felt like a taboo subject to many. However, with the help of charities like Prostate Cancer UK, and the support of people like Cyril, barriers are being lowered and progress is being made to support men to deal with these issues head-on. Each year, 1 in 8 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, and sadly, many of those wait till it’s too late to visit their physician. Early detection of prostate cancer is the most effective way to treat and eradicate the illness, which is why a PSA test, which is a very quick blood test, is a good way to get an indication of prostate health. ‘I’ve watched close friends and families lose their lives to this disease, but I’ve also seen how catching it early can lead to recovery and that’s why I chose the prostate cancer charity, to raise awareness.’ says Williams ‘After testing 167 men last week, we had 8 amber and 8 red test results, and the hope is that these men will get the speedy attention needed to treat this illness. With the hand-made frame now in place, we are packing the straw and clay mix insulation into the walls. We need to get as much insulation done as possible before the weather turns colder, and if you have a day, or just a morning or afternoon to spare each week, you would be very welcome to join us. In September we will start to make the wooden tiles (shingles) for the roof.
