Award for Hadleigh Cycling Club The Club’s efforts to reduce single-use plastics during The Gayford Flyer sportive has been recognised by the Plastic Free Communities Network and the Club has been officially recognised as a community ally. Frank Minns, Mayor of Hadleigh and various members of Hadleigh Cycling Club met with Phil Wells from Plastic Free Hadleigh to celebrate the award. The Town Council also supports the Plastic Free initiative and has agreed to lead by example and remove single-use plastic items from its premises and operations. The award recognises the efforts of the Club to reduce single-use plastics at the annual Gayford Flyer sportive which ran in September and attracted over 170 riders. The Club ensured that each participant replaced plastic ties to attach their ride number with string and instead of giving out plastic bottles of water at the refreshment stop, large water containers loaned by Hadleigh Hares were used to fill up riders’ bottles. In the past, the Club gave out snack bars with plastic wrappers as refreshments, this year riders were offered bananas. Plastic Free Communities (an initiative of Surfers Against Sewage) is a network tackling single-use plastic from beaches and green spaces all the way back to the brands and businesses who create it. It is astonishing to learn that one in every ten barrels of oil is used to create new plastic. For further information about the network go to: www.plasticfree.org.uk The Club runs a social ride on Sundays in the winter which usually begin at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. The ride is weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub or visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk This year’s AGM will take place on December 7th at 6.30pm and will be on Zoom. Details can be found on our website.

Regional solicitors Holmes & Hills now offers a Will writing service which provides couples with a saving of between 17% and 21% on legal fees, when making Mirror Wills at the same time. Married couples, long-term partners and cohabiting couples all benefit from the saving. Why make a Will at all? Quite simply, if you do not make a Will the law says who inherits your estate. Most people assume that everything would pass automatically to their partner, but this is not necessarily so and certainly if you are not married or in a civil partnership, they will have no automatic right to inherit any part of your estate. Your estate may pass to the person or persons you would not want to inherit. It may result in financial hardship for your loved ones or an expensive court action. Making a Will ensures that the people you want to benefit when you die receive your estate. Holmes & Hills Solicitors are experienced to be able to draft a Will that is tailor-made to meet your specific requirements. We appreciate that some couples have ‘simple’ arrangements whilst for others their affairs may be more ‘complex’. Whatever your specific circumstances, Holmes & Hills Solicitors will be able to assist you. Couples often wish to receive advice as follows: • How to update an existing Will • How to provide for young children • How to plan for future care needs • How to leave business interests • How to provide for a disabled child or adult • What steps they should take if choosing to leave out a beneficiary from their Will • Provide for children from a former relationship • How to set up a trust • How to protect your contribution to the purchase price of a property when you live with someone else* • How to give away an inheritance in a tax efficient manner** What if you have children from a previous relationship? Making a Will is very important for couples who may have children from previous relationships and want to ensure that their money will pass to their own family. This can be a sensitive issue between couples – but it doesn’t have to be so. It is possible to draft a Will making sure that your spouse/partner is provided for in the event of your death and ensuring that ultimately your family will inherit your estate. No better time to make a Will – save up to 21% Married couples, long-term couples and civil partners all save between 17-21% when making Mirror Wills, with the exact saving being subject to the complexity of the affairs. You will be advised of this at an initial meeting. There really is ‘no time like the present’ for you and your partner to make your Wills. Even if you have already made a Will, it might be a good idea to review it and see if it still meets all your requirements and accurately reflects your wishes. It doesn’t matter if Holmes & Hills did not draft your existing Will, we are still able to advise you and prepare a new one should you wish to do so. *Declaration of Trust. **Deed of Variation Couples save 17%-21% when making Mirror Wills at the same time.
To talk to a local lawyer about making or updating your Will, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 and ask to speak with Deborah Abbott or Dean Stanhope.

Plans to introduce new tariffs, including an hour’s free parking, in Babergh car parks from January next year, have been postponed. This week, Babergh’s new cabinet member for environment Cllr Dr Siân Dawson, Hadleigh North has taken the decision to postpone the implementation of the new tariffs indefinitely, focusing instead on supporting businesses and the recovery of the district’s high streets. The changes agreed by Babergh’s cabinet earlier this year, were due to begin in January next year, to allow the council as much time as possible to work with the high street to find the best solution for everyone, and avoid unnecessary uncertainty during the Christmas season. However, the Conservatives decided to further postpone the implementation date, recognizing that while evidence suggests gradual business recovery across the district since Government restrictions were lifted, supporting the local economy and encouraging residents back to the high streets must now take priority. Cllr Dawson said “The Conservatives have continued to listen to our residents, parish and town councils, businesses and others, and understand free parking in our towns is an emotive subject for many. “I recommended to Cllr John Ward to make the decision to postpone the implementation of the new tariffs indefinitely, while we continue to prioritise supporting our businesses and welcoming people back to our high streets. “Parking, of course, remains a very careful balancing act, between the immediate needs and visions for our towns, those of the whole district, and our environment. “I am hopeful we can be financially creative over coming months to finance the loss of subsidising our car parks, and continue to help our towns to thrive.” A new implementation date, or any changes to the agreed tariffs, are now unlikely to be confirmed until 2023 at the earliest. Improvements due to be funded by car park income, such as signage, resurfacing and access improvement works, active travel improvements, and extended resident parking permit schemes, are also expected to be delayed. In the meantime, the council are developing a joint parking strategy – setting out a blueprint for the next 5-10 years. It will take on board feedback received during the councils’ recent consultation, while also looking at capacity and other needs across Babergh. Cllr Dr Siân Dawson, Cabinet Member for Environment
Innes Family Butchers “I didn’t even know you were here!” or “I never knew there were two butchers in Hadleigh”. Two phrases that Dave at Innes Family Butchers hears a lot. If you call in to see Dave or Gerald you can be sure of two things. Firstly a warm and friendly welcome, and second, a wide selection of locally sourced, high welfare, rare breed meats. Provenance is vitally important to Dave and he has excellent relationships with all his local suppliers, mostly only a few miles away from the shop, and knows exactly where every animal has been raised. Everyone knows you can buy meat cheaper in the supermarkets, but will the person at the checkout tell you how best to cook it? Can they tell you exactly what went into that sausage? Take a walk up to Innes Family Butchers, follow the map below, for friendly, personal service that only a real butcher can provide.

Tree for Life scheme welcomes applications from new parents A Tree for Life scheme in Babergh and Mid Suffolk which offers a free tree for new parents, is open for 2021 applications. The scheme is open to all families in the districts who have or are welcoming a new arrival between 1 January and 31 December 2021. Parents who may have lost a child during the same period are also able to apply for a remembrance tree. The initiative offers parents with a new born or newly adopted child the chance to mark their arrival by planting a tree. It aims to benefit families, communities and the environment by boosting tree coverage across the district. So far the councils have given out over a thousand trees through Tree for Life, with 2020 applicants collecting their trees last month following a necessary delay to allow the council to prioritise essential services during the pandemic. Expert help is always on hand on collection to advise families on their tree choice and aftercare at home. Also open to those without a garden, a selection of the trees continue to be planted at key locations in the districts including Needham Lake, Shotley Golden Wood, Broom Hill in Hadleigh, Gallowsfield Wood in Haughley and Sproughton Millennium Green. Over 100 families have already applied to the 2021 scheme, but the councils are encouraging even more people to apply for their tree on the councils' website before the 10 January 2022 deadline. Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for climate change, biodiversity and sustainable transport, said: “I’m proud that our Tree for Life scheme in Babergh continues to blossom. It provides a unique opportunity to benefit our environment and support county-wide climate ambitions, while also giving families a reason to spend time in the garden planting and nurturing their tree for the years to come. I would encourage as many people as possible to claim their free tree.” The trees must be planted within the two districts and eligible applicants will be invited to choose and collect their tree in early 2022. Applications will be processed after the closing date. www.babergh.gov.uk/environment/tree-for-life/

Have a healthy Christmas with the help of East Anglia’s very-own Spanish food shop: “Sibarita”- Spain’s Organic Larder Before “tucking in” at Christmas, spare a thought to what’s good for you! Sibarita has just about as wide a range of high-quality, dried and cooked pulses as you can buy anywhere in the UK. So, what are the health benefits of pulses: beans, chickpeas and peas? According to Sibarita, pulses provide protein and fibre, as well as a significant source of vitamins and minerals, such as iron, zinc, folate, and magnesium, and consuming half a cup of beans or peas per day can enhance diet quality by increasing intakes of these nutrients. But let’s not take Sibarita’s word for it - here is what the NHS has to say: • Pulses are a great source of protein. This means they can be particularly important for people who do not get protein by eating meat, fish or dairy products. Pulses can also be a healthy choice for meat-eaters by adding to soups, casseroles and meat dishes to add extra texture and flavour. This means you can use less meat, which makes the dish lower in fat, and cheaper. • Pulses are a good source of iron. They are a starchy food and add fibre to your meal. Eating a diet high in fibre is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Pulses may not be the top of your list of accompaniments to your traditional roast turkey but think “Boxing Day”. What can we do that’s interesting and tasty with all the turkey leftovers and the roast gammon…..? This is where Sibarita’s various cooked haricot beans, chickpeas and lentils, and all their sauces and pickles, can transform the left-overs into something special. Sibarita is participating in the Hadleigh Christmas Fayre on Saturday, 4th December and is looking forward to meeting customers. Expert (so it is said) help will be on hand to discuss their products. We understand that Very Special Offers will be available to our readers. Give us a call or send us an email at any time: 01787 323933 or hello@sibarita.co.uk

The continuing uncertainty about many aspects of daily life and the vaccination programme itself has been, for some people a major cause of stress and anxiety. For others, unhelpful habits may be proving difficult to leave behind. Hypnotherapy can be helpful in addressing these and many other issues. It has been a busy year here at Hadleigh Hypnotherapy. Having received many enquiries regarding hypnotherapy for children, I completed the extra training necessary to enable me to welcome younger clients as well as adults into my practice. Wanting to be able to extend this really effective therapy to a wider audience, I also trained and registered as a practitioner with the Hypnotherapy in Schools Programme, enabling me to work with students and staff within school settings. My therapy space provides a calm, quiet, confidential environment in which we can discuss yours or your child’s individual needs and together, to make positive changes. However, for those who prefer not to travel, hypnotherapy can also be delivered online. If you would like to find out more, please don’t hesitate to contact me and as a welcome to new clients, for the month of January 2022, I will be offering a free initial consultation. With warm wishes for the coming year, Charlotte Telephone 07763 827774 Email: hadleighhypnotherapy@gmail.com www.hadleighhypnotherapy.co.uk

Hadleigh Art Club Activities We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those that ask, we try to give advice/guidance/constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group... We charge £3 per session to cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5, due in May. There is a list of weekly topics but these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current weeks) while others will be working on their own subject. We wish everyone a happy and healthy time at Christmas and the New Year. We resume our meetings on 11th January 2022. Here is the program for December and January: 7th December: Doors, windows and gates. There are some lovely examples of window and doorway styles in Hadleigh. 14th December: Christmas Party - a social get-together - today is restricted to club members only. 11/01/2022: Birds on a bird feeder/table - you may have been feeding them recently and have your own photos - or have Christmas cards with similar pictures 18/01/2022: Children playing games. How about a snowball fight, or building a snowman? 25/01/2022: Onions, shallots, garlic bulbs - these can make very good pictures.
Local Gallery attracts even more Exhibitors When Suzanne and John first introduced themselves in the Hadleigh Community News, lockdowns were only just behind them and their new venture of taking over Brett Gallery in October 2020 was in its infancy. What a difference a year makes! Continuing Win Gage’s vision of providing a showcase for East Anglian Artists and Makers, they increased the size of the Gallery to pleasing effect, including a homely feel. It has also offered With aWildlife theme scope for them to exhibit a wider range of new artists in spacious surroundings, as well as build on the Gallery’s established base. The overall result is quite unique in the area. Furthermore, they are surrounded by other small independent outlets including Corncraft Shop and Tearooms, Sarah’s Attic, Olivien, Bridge Farm Plants, Lavenham Falconry and the Outrageous Cake Company. As Christmas approaches, what better place to find that unusual gift for your loved one, or for yourself for that matter! The Gallery is sited within the grounds of Bridge Farm Barns, Monks Eleigh where you can relax over morning coffee and cake, lunch or afternoon tea, in between visits to the various outlets within the complex. Such an opportunity gives time to ponder that inspiring painting that you might have had your eye on. It could have been beautiful pottery, stunning glass, that splendid woodturning piece or indeed something quite unusual that defies labelling. The extensive card selection also reflects the talent of the exhibiting artists. All creations are presented in a warm, safe and peaceful atmosphere, away from the crowds. Christmas is coming at The Cock Inn December is usually the busiest month of the year for the pub industry, so fingers crossed that there will be no emergency closures imposed by government this year. We are doing all we can to keep our customers and staff safe. Most of the pub events have returned, including the local dart and bar billiard leagues. We have a full calendar of music events too and our ever popular busker and quiz nights are back and extremely successful. The novice dart evening has really taken off so if you are a budding dart player or wish to take up the pastime, come along on a Wednesday night. Its great fun and a wonderful opportunity to learn to play or improve your game. A lot of coverage in the Chancellors budget regarding beer duty reductions. A kind gesture though it won’t be implemented until 2023. It equates to a saving of around 3p a pint, however any landlord will tell you, other costs have increased substantially post pandemic. Even the price of Co2, the gas that powers your draught products has near doubled in price, With many drinks and products being imported, in particular wines and some continental lagers, the near six fold increase in container shipping costs has added to additional price increases. At the Cock Inn we have not had a major price increase since 2018 so I’m sure we will have to pass on some of the increases to our loyal and valid customers in the near future, otherwise we might not always be here to serve you. Meanwhile, for those that frequent us between 5pm and 7pm Monday through till Friday can benefit from our ‘Early Bird’ offers. Every little helps! We have published our Christmas and new year opening times and are also advising that New Years Eve will be, as in previous years, an all ticket affair. Tickets will be available from the end of November. There is a rumour too that we may be offering hearty pub lunches from January, Monday to Friday only. Watch this space! www.thecockinnhadleigh.co.uk
Helping those who cannot help themselves It was something author Frank Payne had often thought of doing. But could never find the time. At the age of 87 and now with time on his hands, it was now or never. So he set out to write his first book. He has now completed and published two, with the third well on its way. The first, ‘Here Today "Goon" Tomorrow’ was published in July. The second, ‘Well Worth Waiting For’ is due to be published this month. Together they chronicle the story of Frank's life. The third, ‘It All Kicks Off On Sunday’ is of his forty years spent as a boys football team manager and coach and qualified referee. It will be finished by Christmas and recounts his continuous 40 year battles with adult and junior players, their managers, supporters and parents. Hence the title ‘It All Kicks Off On Sunday’. Frank was born in South East London on April 21 1934, his father died at age 24, he survived the Blitz, narrowly missing a stray German bomb which destroyed the house he, his sister and mother had minutes earlier left, to go to the outdoor shelter. Married in 1958 he, his wife and three children shared a great love of animals, especially dogs. Today the total is fifteen, each remaining with them for the whole of their canine lives. If you add to them the other dogs rescued by others of his family, the number to date is twenty three. That is why Frank, whose male voice choir has sung twice at the Albert Hall in 2014 and 2016, is donating every pound each of his books earn through sales, to SeSaw, a small animal rescue and rehoming charity in Leavenheath, Suffolk. They, like all small charities have suffered severe financial losses due to the Pandemic, but still they battle on. Said Frank “Their needs are far greater than mine, my wife, daughter and grandchildren all physically help with SeSaw's animal welfare. At 87, my time is running out, I've fought battles with Prostate Cancer, Bladder Cancer and now the last vestige of Skin Cancer. I pray each of my books do well. That I'm given time to finish ‘It All Kicks Off On Sunday’. Frank has spoken to his publisher who have agreed he can reduce the price of both books to £5.00 each for readers. Accepting two good reads are better than one, the price will be £10.00 (at £10.99 each, the Publishers retail price is £21.98). Perhaps an ideal Christmas present if there is a reader in your house. Old Buckenham Hall School, Year 7 have been studying life in the WW1 trenches of the Western Front. They have been exploring propaganda posters, diary extracts, poems, and photographic evidence. Pupils have been writing first person narratives and writing postcards home from the front line. Here is Eugenie des Rotours story It was six o’clock when I was coming back from a long afternoon’s ride on my horse, Milly. It started to rain. I hurried when my hat blew away. I was going to chase after it when something caught my eye. It was a poster flapping in the wind. It said, “There’s room for you. Enlist today.” The word “you” was the biggest word. Underneath that there was a picture with a scarlet steam train. It was packed with soldiers who all looked happy. There was probably only one space left on the train. There was a man on the train pointing at me and another man only half on the platform beckoning to me. It made me feel special. On the platform there was an old man waving. He was too old to go to war, but I was not. In the background, I could see steam; that meant the train was about to leave. I rushed back home. I had to think of someone to look after Milly whilst I was gone. About three weeks later, I was sitting there in the trenches thinking to myself, “Oh, I remember those happy days…”. War was not as fun as it seemed on the poster. The trenches were cramped and claustrophobic, rats were growing as big as cats. The ground was wet and muddy. There were sand bags in preparation for bombs and barbed wire to keep the enemy out. There were some people sleeping and others who were possibly dead. I could not tell the difference. I was writing a letter to my parents when I got told I had to go over the top to no man’s land to spy on the Germans with a soldier called Jim. I had never been over the top, but how bad could it be? I got to meet Jim before going into no man’s land. He seemed very nice. He told me about his three daughters, Maya who was four, Helena who was six and Beatrice who was eight. At soon as it was dark, we were off. I dodged the barbed wire, going over and under. I would give anything to be back in England. We were crawling carefully on our stomachs. I felt like a snake. I looked around. I saw a German about to shoot. He was aiming for Jim. In a split second I knew what I had to do. He had three daughters that needed him; no one had ever cared about me. I took a deep breath and jumped in front of Jim. The last thing I saw was a blurred vision: Jim running away and disappearing into the safety of the trenches…

Fresh Start Charity Shop Opens 1st December in Hadleigh High Street #notjustafoodbank
In support of Hadleigh Foodbank Charity
It’s been an incredibly busy year for Hadleigh Foodbank Charity and we are pleased to announce the opening of our new shop in the High Street. We have been overwhelmed by support from the local community as well as from all our amazing volunteers. Our work continues to grow as we reflect on the various fundraising events held throughout the year, working in partnership with Suffolk County Council and local businesses.
All proceeds raised from both Fresh Start Charity Shops go towards Hadleigh Foodbank, which provides food aid to struggling individuals and families in Hadleigh and the surrounding villages, including Aldham, Boxford, Elmsett, Layham, and Raydon.
APRIL: We launched the first Fresh Start Charity Shop at Unit 2, Church View, Kersey Mill, MAY: It wasn’t long before we needed to expand into neighbouring premises at Unit 3, Church View, Kersey Mill. This enabled a lot more space for our customers to browse and to accommodate the ever increasing amount of donations we received! JUNE: The High Sheriff of Suffolk, Edward Creasey, visited our new shop at Kersey Mill. He was accompanied by two representatives from Suffolk County Council, to present the Suffolk Award to the Charity’s founder, Angela Gregg, in recognition of the Charity’s work especially during the pandemic. JULY/AUGUST: During the School Summer Holidays various activities were organised by Hadleigh Youth Academy and funded by Suffolk County Council for school children aged 7-15. The initiative worked in partnership with local businesses including Act First, Archery Adventures, Glass & Craft, Little Musketeers and Matthew Watson Coaching - a special thanks from us to everyone who got involved. OCTOBER: Fashion Show, organised in partnership with Zor Boutique. NOVEMBER: Christmas Craft Fair - 50+ stall holders. DECEMBER: Our new Shop Opens in Hadleigh & Santa Toy Give Away. The Fashion Show and the Christmas Craft Fair were hosted by The Venue at Kersey Mill, both were extremely well supported. We are already planning our next Fashion Show in the Spring! The Christmas Craft Fair was sold out to over 50 stall holders within weeks and visitors on the day itself were impressed by the amazing range of gifts on offer.

Babergh District Council is asking businesses, residents and the local community to give their feedback to help shape the future of Hadleigh Market. The market, which runs every Friday morning, has grown substantially over the last five years, and during the coronavirus restrictions offered a safe, open space for local shoppers to purchase food and other essential items. Home to 20 regular stalls, Hadleigh Market recently welcomed start-up businesses to experience the market through the council’s Innovate Local scheme, which was funded by a grant from Suffolk Inclusive Growth Investment Fund. Since the last market consultation in 2016, there have been significant changes in the way people want to shop and Babergh District Council is taking the opportunity to engage with market traders, local businesses, and the community to understand their views and opinions to ensure the market continues to be a success for many years to come. Cllr Michael Holt, cabinet member for economic growth said: “Hadleigh Market is an important part of the town, not only providing a convenient place for local people to shop but also creating a buzz for visitors to the town coming to enjoy the high street and attractions. I would encourage anyone with an interest in the future of the market to submit their views online or in person.” Anyone wishing to contribute to share their views can complete a survey in person in the market place on the morning of 3 December or online by visiting Securing Hadleigh Market's Future, Section 1, Babergh and Mid Suffolk Self Service (achieveservice.com) before 13th December 2021. The consultation will take into consideration the impact of the weekly road closure that was introduced to help social distancing measures introduced in March 2020. A current ETRO (Experimental Traffic Regulation Order) is in place while the consultation is undertaken, and specific comments related to the ETRO on market days should be emailed to Laura Hemmings (Suffolk Legal) at laura.hemmings@suffolk.gov.uk by 30 January 2022. Cllr Mick Fraser, ward member for Hadleigh South said: “The market is very much part of Hadleigh and its community. Having grown from three to 20 stalls over the last five years we know the stalls are attracting a lot of regular shoppers. By undertaking this engagement, we can ensure the market remains popular and continues to attract a wide range of traders and shoppers.” For more information, please visit www.babergh.gov.uk

Bravo! As this edition goes to print, members of the Hadleigh Choral Society will be reflecting on the autumn concert held at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh on 20 November and looking forward to their ‘Celebration of Christmas’ on Saturday 11th December. This short concert takes place in St Mary’s and is at 6.30pm. Entrance is free to all, but there will be a retiring collection for a local Alzheimers Charity. Preparations for Spring are already well underway. Liz Turnbull, Concert Manager adds. “I’m delighted to say that we will be performing the programme of Bernstein and Duruflé that we had to abandon due to the lockdown in March 2020.” The choir has had a great boost since the pandemic with local financial planning firm, Matthew Douglas Ltd, providing sponsorship for the 2021/2022 season. Georgia Hall is an adviser at Matthew Douglas. She joined in 2014 working through the ranks, firstly as an administrator to chartered financial adviser. Based at Hadleigh, she now provides independent advice to clients across Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. “I recently went along to rehearsals at the Ansell Centre where the choir were in final rehearsals for the autumn concert. Due to covid guidelines, the windows were all open and it was blowing a bit of gale. Everyone was freezing but the show had to go on. I really enjoyed meeting the choir, Chris Phelps, conductor and David Mitchell, pianist. What a talented bunch. The concert itself was excellent. My colleague, Jane, came along too and she loved it. Since the pandemic Matthew Douglas Ltd has been helping people deal with the financial impact of COVID. According to a recent Scottish Widows Report, one in three people over the age of 50 have seen their finances impacted in some way. Some are choosing to access retirement savings early or withdraw money from existing pensions. Everyone has different circumstances so we tailor our advice and encourage people to seek information based on their particular set of circumstances rather than seek general information and try to apply it to their own situation. At Matthew Douglas we support the community we work in, in the best way possible. Whilst some of our team are really sporty and run park runs or marathons for our chosen charities, I am really happy to get involved with the choir. I am also a local councillor which takes up a lot of my spare time and I volunteer for a local charity which I am very passionate about too. I haven’t been approached to join the choir myself yet. Perhaps someone has heard me singing Tosca in the car as I drive through Hadleigh in the mornings! On behalf of Matthew Douglas Ltd, congratulations to the choir for an amazing evening at St Mary’s Church. Driving Home for Christmas The Christmas Present Trust is going full steam ahead to provide a traditional meal (or dietary equivalent) to anybody who, for whatever reason, cannot be with family or friends on Christmas Day. Last year we were unable to hold the event in the Ansell Centre as normal and therefore delivered 90+ meals around Hadleigh. This year we are holding the event AND delivering meals – and we need volunteers to do so. We need help setting up the Ansell Centre on Christmas Eve (and peeling the vegetables!), help providing lifts to guests who cannot get to the Centre on their own, help in the kitchen on Christmas Day, help delivering meals to those who are still not comfortable joining in a big indoor event and, most importantly, help talking with our guests and making the whole event go with a bang. If you think you can help on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day (taking everything down) please contact Simon or Sarah Thompson at christmas.present.trust@gmail.com or call 07778 860267. Equally, if you know anyone who would benefit from an invitation to this free event, please get in touch. Merry Christmas to everyone in Hadleigh and may 2022 be a wonderful year for us all

Hadleigh Sea Scout Group In October the Hadleigh Sea Scout Group held a special event to mark the establishment of the 1st Hadleigh Scout Group in 1921 and celebrate 100 years of continuous scouting in Hadleigh as a result. Members and friends of Scouting, both past and present, attended an open day and viewed an exhibition of scouting through the ages as well as our plans for the future. We were able to meet with former members from as long ago as the late 1950's, and reminisce over photographs and newspaper cuttings covering events over the past 70 years, including a leaders wedding, a scout trip to Kenya, and the construction of our headquarters. Many old acqaintences were renewed over tea and cake and new memories made for the future. Keith Marsland

Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School - Reading For Pleasure In school we believe that reading underpins all that we do, so facilitating the love of reading in children is vitally important. This begins with the teaching in Early Years of Early Reading combined with phonics. The books that are available for children to read are carefully selected and begin with Sound Blending Books before moving on to 'Dittys' or very short stories. The books are matched to the children's phonic ability ensuring that they can be successful in knowing the sounds to read the words independently. Alongside this, we ensure that there is a second reading book that follows a progressive scheme to share with parents (this book may need some adult support) together with a book from either the school non-fiction or class fiction library... sometimes both! As the children become more fluent in knowing their sounds, they move through the phonics books and are encouraged to choose from the wide selection of books availabIe in school. In classes, we have a reading area that all children have the opportunity to experience each week plus in KS2 access to the Just Imagine app further encourages reading a diverse range of book genres and authors. This year we have also had a focus on diversity and inclusion in reading, and throughout our curriculum to develop the children's understanding of themselves, their classmates and the world around them. Books are carefully selected in classes to ensure that the children encounter as wide a range of genres and authors as possible, signposting other similar texts that also may be of interest to them. A class reader, from the classic novel through to a new release, is chosen and read in each class each half term to further build on the children's exposure to the stimulating and varied world of literature available to them. These texts are chosen by both the classes and teachers and shared at the end of the school day in the traditional story time manner. This advert is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis Printers, 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF
James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As ever, it has been a particularly busy time in Westminster. On the one hand, I’ve been getting used to life as a Minister, and on the other, keeping up the pressure on my constituency priorities in South Suffolk. In many ways, the common factor has been the great joy of being out and about again, enjoying the freedom resulting ultimately from our brilliant vaccine program. In Ministerial terms, as I have responsibility for sentencing policy and criminal law, ‘out and about’ has generally meant visiting Crown and Magistrates’ Courts around the country – including Manchester, Birmingham, Snaresbrook and the Old Bailey. Of course, the backlog of cases is a huge issue but it’s not until you visit Crown Courts in person that you appreciate why social distancing rules have made it so much harder to keep justice moving. To emphasise this point, I also recently visited Loughborough where we have just opened a new ‘super courtroom’ designed to try cases with up to 12 defendants, precisely the type of very serious (and often gang related) case that has been most challenging in the pandemic. Inevitably the most enjoyable part of properly getting ‘out and about’ again as an MP has been in terms of South Suffolk itself. It has been fantastic to be able to once again fully pack my constituency days with visits to schools, businesses, and local organisations. It was also an honour to lay a wreath at Sudbury’s Remembrance Sunday service, following last year’s suspension of the full-blown ceremony. As I said, public events such as these are only possible because of the brilliant Covid vaccine rollout here in South Suffolk. As we head into winter, it is imperative that all those who are eligible - i.e. the over-40’s or those who are vulnerable book in for their booster jab. As soon as 5-months since your second vaccination have elapsed, you will be able to book your booster injection. I wish all of my constituents a very enjoyable festive period with their friends and families, and I look forward to seeing more of you in 2022!
Kersey School Open Days Kersey is about to hold Open Days for any prospective parents interested in the school organised by the Tilian Partnership, which Kersey joined at the beginning of November. The eight schools in the Tilian network are all small church primaries, and the Partnership is run by people who believe passionately in the unique advantages of such schools for giving children the very best start in life and education. As Kersey’s Headteacher Claire Dunnell Paley puts it, “There is so much we can draw on in this school’s idyllic setting, which we can use to make the curriculum feel real and vibrant to our children.” Therefore in the last month the children have marked the start of new literacy topics by making and launching paper boats in Kersey splash, going on a bird walk, and enjoying activities such as a Handbell-ringing club (“The Kersey Clangers”), weekly music lessons, and a visit by singers from Snape Maltings. They have taken part in a packed Harvest Festival Service in Kersey Church and marked Remembrance Day with a live performance of the Last Post. Next up of course – Christmas, with a green-screen filming day, and a Nativity planned with real animals! For Claire, the school’s small size gives another key opportunity – the capacity to get to know everybody really well. With the help of Tilian’s Chief Improvement Officer Louise Clark, she’s drawing up an individual learning plan for each one of Kersey’s children as well as stepping up feedback with parents, in order that they can know exactly how they can best help progress their children’s learning. We have an Open Afternoon on Monday December 06 (1330-1530). The Headteacher, Governors, and senior Tilian leaders will be available to answer any questions and outline their vision for the future. But for anyone who misses that date, Claire has a simple message, “Don’t worry – but do feel free to call the school and arrange another time to come and see what we have to offer!” Kersey C of E Primary School, Cherry Hill, Kersey, Ipswich IP7 6EG T: 01473 823397 Follow us now on social media for all the latest news and information. Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South May I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and joyous Christmas with your families and friends. Share your thoughts on setting the 2022/23 council budget Later this month, I will be joining with the other members of the Conservative Group to decide next year’s budget setting. I always oppose unnecessary council tax increases as I know how they impact upon those on low or fixed incomes. It would be important for me to understand more about the areas you want SCC to focus its spending on, so please let me know your thoughts on next year’s budget setting by contacting me as below. Following the Chancellor’s recent Spending Review and Autumn Budget, Suffolk County Council (SCC) will have the option to raise Council Tax next year by up to 2% and the Adult Social Care Precept by up to 2%. The current SCC council tax (CT) element for a Band-D dwelling is £1,397.16, therefore making each 1% increment increase at just under £14.00. If decided, then an overall 4% CT increase (2% + 2%) would add another £55.88 to the annual bill (county council part). Where is this money spent? Around 75p of every £1 Suffolk spends goes towards supporting those who need it most; through Adult Care, Children’s Services, and Public Health. Each year there are many challenges in continuing to provide these services within budget. Adult care alone costs around £271m each year. The remaining 25p in every £1.00 is then used to cover the cost of the many other vital services provided; including Fire and Rescue, roads maintenance, footpaths, waste services, libraries, and addressing the challenges surrounding climate change, to name just a handful. SCC Budget Consultation SCC is committed to providing the best services for all residents, but like all councils they do not have unlimited funds. They have already saved hundreds of millions of pounds during the last decade, whilst being innovative in the delivery of many of its services. If residents want more spending on certain services, less would need to be spent in other areas in order to continue to balance the budget now and in the future. As part of this engagement, Suffolk would like to hear your thoughts on the services they deliver, which ones you believe should be prioritised, and how they are funded. SCC has launched their budget consultation and more details on how you can be involved can be found at: www.suffolk.gov.uk/budget2022. Should you need to speak to me concerning an issue that affects you, then please contact me at - email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk or mick.fraser@babergh.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or Facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh, Twitter: @mick_fraser. The month started with a beginners class; we enjoyed arranging with aluminium wire, creating a vertical design and an inverted crescent. At our meeting on 9th November, we hosted speaker Mr Charles Willett from Witham who gave us all a very interesting talk on his family Nursery, its growth through the years and plans for the future. He made it very interesting, ably assisted by his sister Lorna from the audience. Charles impressed us all by the hard work involved and by the fact that he only buys English shrubs and plants. The meeting closed with a presentation to Nancy, the competition winner for her delightful arrangement of flowers in a teacup. The photo shows some of the entries including Nancy’s. At our next meeting on 14th December, we welcome Alan Smith for a demonstration entitled ‘It’s Christmas Again’. Please join us at Hadleigh United Reformed Church, Market Square. The meeting starts at 7.30. All welcome.

The current pandemic has focused everyone’s minds on health matters, and this month’s photograph shows work underway in the snow for the new Hadleigh Health Centre in 2003. Post World War Two, and it was during 1951 that plans were being submitted to the Hadleigh Urban District Council for a doctor’s surgery in Duke Street, on the left-hand side just beyond the public library and set back from the pavement. Subsequently this new surgery opened for Doctor’s Eric Newell and Clive Barnes, with Nora Styles as the receptionist. This surgery was quite basic in its layout, but adequate at the time. In the flanking wall to the right towards the entrance was a small alcove in the brickwork where prescriptions were on occasions left for collection. You can still see this little alcove today. It was during the 1960s that the town began to grow, and the Duke Street facilities were not adequate for the increasing population, and plans were then made for a Health Centre within the grounds of Toppesfield Hall. During October 1975 construction was underway, and on 1st August 1976 the new centre opened. Sadly, on the very same day Doctor Clive Barnes passed away. The growth of the town continued, and it became necessary to further expand the facilities. In January 2003 the Health Centre was demolished and by December the same year, Doctor Chris Squire performed the official opening of the new, and current Health Centre. Picture reference: CB1112. Jim Wilding wishes one and all a very happy Christmas and peaceful New Year
Hadleigh Garden Club Our original November speaker was unavailable, so at short notice we were delighted to welcome Anne Tweddle from Plant Heritage to talk about “Understanding Pruning”. She guided us through caring for roses, shrubs and fruit trees. Then turned her attention to sharpening members secateurs….most of us are guilty of failing to keep our blades sharp . I certainly left the meeting eager to cast an eye over my garden and decide what needs pruning now or leaving till next year. There were a couple of overnight frosts in early November that resulted in the Dahlia tops being severely blackened on the allotment; the ones in my garden have so far escaped damage. Numerous ornamental leaved Pelargoniums grown in pots had luckily been put in the greenhouse so were not affected as the electric heater keeps it frost free. I had taken this opportunity to take several dozen cuttings for next year. I do not dig up the Dahlias on the allotment but leave them in the ground to overwinter. The blackened top is cut down close to the ground and left as mulch. They have survived this method for many years. Some plants like Brussel sprouts, Parsnip, Chard, onion sets and garlic, especially Broad beans don’t seem to be affected by frost and even winter flowering Pansies will bounce back after the heaviest frost. If the weather stays dry it should be possible to give the lawn a light cut with mower blades set high. Don’t forget to keep the bird feeders and water topped up. December 13th sees our fun quiz; a relaxed social event. The committee are providing individually boxed buffet accompanied by mulled wine or fruit juice during the interval. Do join us for this lighthearted evening at this festive time. Normal entrance prices of £2 members £4 visitors with a raffle. The new year programme starts on Jan.10th with a talk from Lucy Skellorn about the Revival of Benton End. For more information, email hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Reg charity no 1124029 Here we are in December and it’s time to thank all the wonderful people who have supported SESAW in so many different ways over the last twelve months. Those who care for the animals, carry out maintenance, organise fundraising, donate handmade or purchased items, visit our stalls at outside events to mention but a few. Your efforts ensure the charity continues to care for animals in need. We hope to hold sales again in 2022, assuming no Covid restrictions prevent it. Please leave a message on our ansaphone or email if you would like to help at events. Applicants to help with animal care are also welcome if you can commit to one morning a week. Copies of Frank Payne’s book, “Here Today, Goon Tomorrow” are still available, an ideal Christmas present when combined with the next instalment of the Author’s biography, “Well Worth Waiting For”. Frank details his wartime childhood, National Service leading to his career as a Sports journalist. Phone 01206 263006 to order the two volumes for £10, all proceeds to SESAW. We do not rehome animals over the Christmas period so we will be closed from 10th December to 10th January 2022 except for emergencies. One last big thank you to the Editor for giving us a voice. The Writing of ‘Whatfield; A Suffolk village across time’ My wife and I arrived in the village of Whatfield with a concerned cat, a car full of our most valued stuff, and a large removals lorry, on a damp evening in November 2014. We had bought Grubbs Edge, a lovely house in the ancient village. Everything was dark; where were the street lights? We had moved from Bexleyheath, in south London, which had rather a lot of lights, and a very large number of houses. The contrast would become clearer each day. We had been history teachers, and retirement to a rural village seemed attractive. A quieter pace of life, fresh air and lots of fields and trees had a great appeal. The previous house owner, Marion, had left me Simon Dewes’ book ‘A Suffolk Childhood’, about the local area a century ago. After unpacking, some basic decorating and the organising and placing of the over 2000 books I have collected over decades, I read Simon’s book. I began walking around the village attempting to imagine what it would have been like 100 years ago. I found myself examining each old cottage, studying the Victorian school building, visiting the medieval church, and looking at old maps showing the local farms. I was hooked. I had moved to a place richer in history than I had ever experienced living in the suburbs, and some of it was still partly visible. The warmth of our welcome to the village encouraged me to seek out villagers who had lived much, or all, of their lives here. I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing a wide range of characters, recording their voices for posterity and writing down their memories of growing up in a village which had changed enormously during the 20th century. I discovered that another ‘newcomer’ from a previous generation, Joy Wellings, had spent a huge amount of time researching the history of the village, and with the help of Joy Green, the village History Recorder, I was able to carefully examine her findings and then develop her work further. I realised that a book was the only way of drawing the information together. Many villagers contributed pictures, documents, photos, letters and sound advice. After three years collecting, comparing and sorting literally thousands of sources which I scanned and recorded, I began the process of drawing the whole thing together. It would take another 2 years to complete the various chapters, whilst additional material kept appearing! The final book would be more detailed than I had envisaged at the start, partly because I wanted to include many of the wonderful sources for future generations to see. The book examines how the village probably evolved from ancient times, with sections covering the main historic buildings and institutions. It looks at change, especially the sudden move away from being a traditional farming community during the 20th century and the implications of that, which apply to so many villages in Suffolk. The most important parts of the story come from the memories of villagers, and over one third of the book is dedicated to their witness accounts. It is a privilege to live in Whatfield and to feel the echoes of an ancient community still present. We can learn more than we think from listening to those who were here before us. David Dray, Grubbs Edge, Whatfield, Suffolk

Food for Thought Talking about the environment with children can be difficult – how much to say? How to make it real without being scary? Over half term Angie from HEAT held a session in Hadleigh Library building children’s awareness of environmental issues through pictures and talking about the natural environment. The smaller children coloured in pictures about helping wildlife and plants for pollinators as a start to whet their appetite. We also used three apples from different parts of the world so the children could guess which ones had come 50 miles and which ones had travelled 8,000 miles. Did you know that a typical container ship bringing the apple from South Africa burns around 225 tons of fuel each day? The children were interested in how they could reduce the carbon footprint of their food, so we talked about looking out for the Red Tractor symbol which indicates high quality British food and how the Union Jack means something has been grown in Britain. Why not make shopping fun for your children or grandchildren by seeing where the food comes from and how much comes from Britain? It was lovely that some teenagers came in asking about recycling and sharing the fact that they shop for some clothes in charity shops and look out for new clothes made from cotton and wool rather than synthetic materials which are a source of the micro-plastics that are polluting the rivers and sea. HEAT is keen to do more with children - Angie is running another Library session soon on making Christmas decorations form recycled materials. If you have children and would like to help HEAT expand its work with youngsters, then do get in contact with us via hadleigh.HEAT@hotmail.com. If we all do little, then we will achieve a lot

Chelsworth Christmas Fair is back after an enforced break in 2020 due to the pandemic Although Chelsworth is a very small village the whole community pulls together to create a wonderfully festive Christmas Fair with almost every household contributing in some way. This is a traditional, rural event, held in the beautiful, medieval, All Saints Church which will be decorated for Christmas to add to the seasonal atmosphere Chelsworth is often said to be one the prettiest villages in Suffolk and because the Church has no direct access from a road, visitors to the Fair will have a chance to admire some of the ancient buildings as they walk the short distance from the car park on a nearby farm. Around 20 stalls will be selling gifts, crafts and foods. Light refreshments will be available and there will be plenty of mince pies and mulled wine and as an extra treat, musical entertainment at various times during the day. Over the past two years, an exciting programme of work, has taken place in the Church to provide better lighting, heating a, toilet and kitchen as well as rebuilding the organ which is now sited in a newly created gallery. Many grants from local and national bodies contributed to the cost of this work, but the profits from previous Christmas Fairs also played their part. The Church is now able to be used for many community events as well as for worship. This will be the first major public event in the newly refurbished Church; an extra cause for celebration. The Fair will be on Saturday 4th December from 11am to 4pm. The Church is in the centre of Chelsworth, close to the B1115. Entry for adults is £3 and Children are free.
Rotary Review Santa Special: Covid regulations permitting the Rotary Christmas Collections will start again this year. Father Christmas and his float will follow the usual routes around Hadleigh and appear at Morrisons as well. Some small changes will be necessary for health and safety reasons. Santa will still visit your door if you wish but will socially distance himself whilst talking to the children and we do ask you to remain at your door rather than gathering in groups on the pavement. Similar rules will apply at Morrisons when Santa is meeting the children. Sadly for the same reasons no sweets will be handed out. Even so, we hope that you will enter into the Christmas spirit and give as generously as you can for local charities which really do need your support this year. The routes and times are as follows: Thursday 16 Dec: Malyon Road and Matilda Groome Road area 5.30 - 7.45pm approx. Friday 17 Dec: Morrisons Car Park 10.00 - 3.00pm approx. Parish Council The main matters discussed during the meeting of 20 October 2021 were: District Council report A new CCTV system was now fully operational in Hadleigh and Sudbury, with 8 cameras recording 24 hours a day in Hadleigh. There was also one mobile camera; in response to a question, Cllr Ward said this could be used on the Playing Field from time to time if there were problems with vandalism etc. Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s Housing Solution team had been highly commended in the ‘Community Heroes’ category of the Municipal Journal awards. Parking charges in Hadleigh would not be introduced in January 2022 as originally planned; however, the issue was under constant review. Cllr Ward confirmed that there would be an opportunity for the PC to feed into the Wellbeing Strategy currently being developed. The strategy would also look at ways to encourage more active lifestyles. • Speeding Following the installation of the SID device on the pole by the bus stop facing towards Hadleigh, the data recorded had shown a large number of vehicles speeding into Upper Layham from Hadleigh and also leaving the village towards Hadleigh. The SID had since been moved to the post outside Windy Ridge and further data had been circulated. During that period, temporary traffic lights had been erected outside the Marquis and it had been anticipated that traffic speeds would therefore be low; however, a number of vehicles had been recorded still speeding - some at over 60mph. It was hoped that more parishioners would volunteer to help with moving the device. • Website The Clerk’s paper was as noted and it was agreed to accept her recommendation that the PC should move to Suffolk Cloud, who would transfer the content of the existing website to a new template, and maintain the site. She would look into how the site might be expanded in the future to include other organisations, eg the Village Hall. • Defibrillators It was agreed that a working party would carry out a survey to try and identify a possible location in Lower Layham for an additional defibrillator. • Popes Green Lane Following an email from a parishioner querying the time and effort spent by Highways on clearing and strimming Popes Green Lane, when other roads in the village needed urgent work, the Clerk would ask Highways whether this work was general maintenance, or because of an emergency. • National Grid National Grid would be carrying out archaeological and engineering surveys over the coming weeks as part of the development of their proposals for the Bramford to Twinstead reinforcement project. All surveys would be carried out by specialist contractors who would carry identification and a letter of authority. More information was available on the website: www.nationalgrid.com/bramford-twinstead.
Please save the Date: Sunday 5 June The community of Layham is invited to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Sunday 5th June. The Village Hall Same thumbnail of hall as last month Thank you The Village Hall Committee has not met since October, however, we did get together and spent a day cleaning the hall during the half-term weekend. We have tried to collect as many survey forms (delivered to your door) as we could but if you were out when we called and would like your suggestions considered then please pop your form in the letter box outside the village hall. If you would like to book the hall for a function then please email rosey.emma52@btinternet.com and Rosey will get in touch
At the beginning of November we focused on fireworks, to celebrate bonfire night. We made lots of colourful pictures and made ‘pizza fireworks.’ We had a bingo fundraiser night where we raised £152, thanks to all who supported! In memory of Remembrance Day the children painted their own poppies, and we took a walk up to Layham church all the poppies on the gate As we’re coming into the colder months, we are starting to focus on getting the children into making their own snacks, such as soup, gingerbread biscuits and much more. We have our own Layham Playgroup cookbook, which is amazing for younger children to get involved and learn simple recipes. These are available for anyone to purchase and would make such an amazing Christmas gift for loved ones! They’re amazing value at £3! If you would like one, please get in touch and we can sort out delivery or pick up. We’re looking forward to December when we have lots of Christmas activities linked up for the children and we can’t wait to get started! For more information about playgroup please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk Layham Playgroup is a registered Charity Incorporated Organisation 1160254.

The Ultimate Challenge Having walked 3,200 miles this year on 7 virtual missions, a friend sent me an article about the longest walk in the world from Cape Town to Magadan, Russia, which passes through 17 countries, 6 time zones and all seasons of the year. This is totally beyond the bounds of possibility but what I will try and do is get ‘Out of Africa’. I'm not even going to mention that distance, suffice it to say that it's a project that will take well over two years. However, given the passage of Anno Domini, there is of course a distinct possibility that I won’t even reach Cairo. I could perhaps divert to Italy, and see Naples and Die! Both of these are very ambitious targets and could well not be achieved but I am setting out with best foot forward. Glenn Abbassi
Hadleigh Walkers We had 11 walkers for our November walk on a beautiful crisp sunny day. Our December walk on Saturday 11th will be a circular walk starting and finishing in Hadleigh. We will leave Stonehouse Road at 0930 and walk to Ivytree Farm, Ash Street, Kersey, Hadleigh Heath and back into Hadleigh via Constitutional Hill. This walk follows a route we have done before but not for some time. It is about 9.5 miles along moderate terrain with a number of break points for anyone wanting a shorter distance. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy or rough in places . As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us from the website contact page or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658.

Waterfield House Care Home host their first Annual Hadleigh Harvest Festival Staff and residents at Waterfield House were excited to host their first annual Hadleigh Harvest Festival at the home, on Thursday 28th of October. The event was a wonderful celebration of harvest and Halloween, in a way that brought the community together. Residents, staff, their families and friends, and members of the area were all warmly welcomed to enjoy the day’s celebrations. The event was a huge success, with several games to play, including pumpkin putting, competitions such as dress the mummy competition, a teddy tombola and brilliant live music. The festival was also host to an impressive number of stallholders, many of which were small businesses within the local community. Residents had so much fun browsing the lovely stalls, which had some wonderful things on offer. There really was something for everyone, of all ages, to enjoy and get involved in. Amanda Thackery, Home Manager at Waterfield House, commented: “It was lovely to see residents, relatives and staff truly being part of the community again after a couple of challenging years. We are finding new ways to live and work together in a very different way and all of us at Waterfield House are very much looking forward to the future together with our wonderful community.” Wellbeing Lead, Vicki commented: “It was a huge blessing to be able to invite families, along with the local community to our first annual Harvest festival. I am proud to be part of a great team that worked so hard to make this day so special. The weather was glorious, and we were able to support local businesses. Laughter filled the air and fun was had by all.” Waterfield House are committed to being an active member of the community and look forward to strengthening relationships with those in the local area now, and well into the future.
Wizard of Oz is back with a twist! Yes, H.A.D.S is back and what a show we have for you next year. We're bringing you The Wizard of Oz with a massive twist and I'm not talking just about the whirl of wind which lands Dorothy in a land far away from her beloved home and family. The twists are...well you're have to come and see for yourselves! Of course Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion are there, also a few extras. We've been working hard in rehearsals learning lines, making costumes and props. It feels so good to be back doing what we do best, getting together enjoying ourselves and sometimes being serious actors! Written by our own members of who we are so proud of. The shows are held in the usual half term week in February. The 24, 25th and two shows on Saturday the 26th. In our last blog in the Community News we stated that we've been lucky enough to have use of Elmsett Village Hall which we are so grateful as it has it's own stage and saves us a huge amount of money hiring stage and all the equipment. This is where the shows will be performed. Tickets go on sale in Keith Avis, Elmsett village shop and online. Prices £10 per adult and £7 per child. Looking forward to seeing many of you our loyal audiences for a show you won't forget.

The Garden Museum announces plans to revive Cedric Morris’ Suffolk home Benton End as a new centre of art and gardening The Garden Museum and the Pinchbeck Charitable Trust will revive and restore the former Suffolk house and garden of artist-gardener Sir Cedric Morris (1889 – 1982) as a new centre of gardening, art, and creativity. The Pinchbeck Charitable Trust acquired Benton End and has now transferred ownership of the house, a private home since Morris’ death in 1982, to the Garden Museum. Cedric Morris and his partner the artist Arthur Lett Haines bought a 16th century manor house outside Hadleigh in Suffolk called Benton End. There they established the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing – a sanctuary for a diverse range of influential artists, writers, musicians, and botanists of the 20th century. Morris made a garden as influential in its day as Sissinghurst for the irises he bred there; it became one of the first modern gardens of naturalistic design, developed as it was for the study of the unusual plants Morris chose with his keen artist’s eye. The revived Benton End will similarly aim to support and inspire artists and gardeners of all ages and to encourage freedom of invention, enthusiasm, and enjoyment, following in spirit the original ethos of Morris and Haines. Bridget Pinchbeck says: “The robust and exciting partnership between the Pinchbeck Charitable Trust and the Garden Museum will underpin the future development of Benton End, ensuring that the enchanting story of the house and the characters who inhabited it will not be lost. The aim is for Benton End to be a place of inclusivity and enthusiasm. The renewal of interest in Cedric Morris began in the garden world in 2015 when former Sissinghurst Head Gardener Sarah Cooke’s display of Benton End irises was the hit of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The art world followed in 2018 when two exhibitions opened in London: Cedric Morris: ArtistPlantsman at the Garden Museum, and Cedric Morris: Beyond the Garden Wall at Philip Mould & Co. Gallery. After being inspired by Morris’ work at the exhibition, Garden Museum supporters Rob and Bridget Pinchbeck discovered that his former home Benton End was for sale and purchased the house through the Pinchbeck Charitable Trust in 2018. Ownership of the house has now been transferred to the Garden Museum, who will Philip Mould, Rob Pinchbeck, Bridget lease it to a new subsidiary charity, Pinchbeck and Sarah Cook the Benton End House and at Benton End Garden Trust, to deliver the project

and run Benton End. The Trust will combine Trustees from Suffolk, the Garden Museum and the world of Cedric Morris, including gallerist Philip Mould, garden designer Arne Maynard and Bridget Pinchbeck. In a gift of remarkable generosity, the Pinchbeck Charitable Trust transferred ownership of Benton End to the Garden Museum with the only request that a consideration of £350,000 towards its value to the Charitable Trust be made in 2024, three years from now, so that the Pinchbeck Charitable Trust may replenish its support for other charitable causes, including medical education, and mental health and well-being. Garden Museum Director Christopher Woodward says: “I’ve been involved in museums for more than 25 years, but never come across a gift of such generosity. Philip Mould, Art Expert and Director, says: ‘Benton End was an artist’s residence, a school, and a plantsman’s paradise that succeeded in supplying a generation of artists with instruction and inspiration. Moreover, it encapsulated a culture and a value system of artistic integrity, individualism and freedom that emanated from a remarkable man and his partner, not to mention the raft of admirers who were drawn to them. It finds appropriate comparison with Charleston in Sussex for its human and creative richness prospering within an emotive English regional location’. The next step is to recruit a Project Director from a museum arts or heritage background, and a varied and dynamic learning programme will be created, inspired by the interests of Morris and Haines and their circle. Benton End was unique in being an art school in a garden and was exceptional in the varied areas of interests of its students and visitors including painting, food, literature, and floristry, as well as having an important role in LGBTQ+ history. Visitors and friends often found at Benton End included artist John Nash, florist Constance Spry, gardener Vita Sackville-West, cookery writer Elizabeth David, writer Ronald Blythe and illustrator Kathleen Hale as well as the composer Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears. One of the first pupils at Benton End was the 17-year-old Lucian Freud, whose portraits of plants and gardens will be the subject of an exhibition at the Garden Museum in 2022. Plans are also afoot for creative residencies at Benton End from spring 2022. Applicants will be invited to take residence at the house and work and the only criterion will be a connection to the life, work, and interests of Morris and Haines. To receive the latest news, sign up to the Benton End newsletter here: www.bentonend.co.uk

Dear Sir With two young adventurous boys in tow, I am never far away from looking for the next outdoor challenge or actively to help them develop, occupy and stimulate them and although rarely do I travel without a back-pack containing a few tennis balls, I just wanted to thank the Parish Council for the genius yet simple 'sports box' initiative at the Layham sportsground. It adds another interesting dimension to the play area and one that the children and parents can involve others who are also there. Long may it remain and our grateful thanks to those who manage it. David, Edward and Arthur Aplin
Dear Sir How did November’s COP26 meeting leave you feeling? Worried? Angry? Bored? If you were left feeling anxious and powerless and wanting to do something / anything, then Hadleigh Environmental Action Team (HEAT) is one way of making a difference locally. We run lots of events and activities such as conservation volunteering, planting trees, campaigning, gardening, river monitoring, installing swift boxes and running sessions for children at the library. We try and keep ourselves up to date through speakers and visits. Our aim is to protect Hadleigh’s natural environment and do what we can, in a small way, to prevent a climate crisis. We are fortunate to live somewhere as rich in biodiversity as Hadleigh. If you would like to get involved email hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com. Dear Sir We Will Remember Them - At this time of year we join with our nation to remember our family and friends once again. I never knew my maternal grandfather, he was lost in 1915. My grandfather served in Egypt and Palestine. In the second world war he was a fireman and spent many hours down at Wapping fighting fires caused by the Blitz. My father was in a reserved occupation but spent the war in the Home Guard. I had 2 uncles in the RAF and I myself joined the RAF in 1956 but never went overseas. My son joined the Royal Engineers and saw service in Germany, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands, so many memories of our service days. Back to now. As the church clock struck eleven on the 11th day of the 11th month, I joined a large turnout for the short service organised by The Royal British Legion. Not very long but very moving. So to Saturday and I watched the Lord Mayor’s Show on TV, then in the evening the Festival of Remembrance from the Royal Albert Hall, what a wonderful job the RBL did. So proud to be British. Then on to Sunday, it was the turn of our town and once again a very large turnout for the parade and short service at the memorial and then to church for the full service. Once again I paid my respects to our lost Hadleigh lady, St./Sergeant Sharron Elliot who lost her life helping others in Iraq. But now we are fighting an unseen enemy, we honour the Doctors, Nurses and other NHS staff who help to keep us all safe. On behalf of us all, our deepest thanks. I wish you a happy season ahead and please stay safe. Charles Petts
Dear Sir Please could someone illuminate me. According to the Highway Code, when an obstruction is on your side, you give way to traffic coming in the opposite direction. In Benton Street a small barrier has been placed in the road a short way from the edge of the pavement outside what in times of old was The Falcon Inn, with painted white lines before it on the side coming from the High Street indicating the need to stop. Fair does - give way to traffic coming along Benton Street going towards the High Street. However, they too have painted white lines on their side a few feet back from the obstruction site. Consequently we have traffic stopped on both sides, each thinking they must give way. What in heaven's name is the purpose of this second set of white lines - just creates confusion. (I presume this is an area where it was seen that, due to narrowing of the road, traffic was going up on the pavement). Sheila Webb
Dear Sir On Friday 22nd October I tipped over on my mobility scooter in Hadleigh High Street. I was unable to do anything. I would like to thank the kind gentleman in the khaki jumper who came to my aid, thanks so much, you were so kind. Ann Hampshire
Dear Sir On Saturday 30th October I was one of the many people invited to come for my Covid booster jab at St Mary’s Church. The queue was long, the weather was wet and I heard many complaints about the poor organisation. However, I would like to use this opportunity to thank all those people who made it possible for us to have our booster jabs, not only the medical staff but the many volunteers who gave up their Saturday to help with the roll out of so many vaccinations in one day. We are extremely fortunate in the UK to have been offered booster jabs when in the poorest countries of the world less than 2% of the population has received even their first dose. So thank you to Hadleigh Health Centre and Jan Devey and all her volunteers for your hard work in getting us jabbed. Jan Dicks

Poetry Corner Remain United The light at the end of the tunnels can be seen, The thought of being with loved ones again is like a dream, As our hopefully last lockdown comes to an end and folds, I reflect on the past year and what the future possible holds. ‘Time’ is a key word that springs to mind, Many of us had so much more of it and our busy minds started to unwind, Time to connect with nature and ourselves, Time to declutter and empty those shelves. Time for acts of kindness and time to feel sad, Time to feel gratitude and time to feel mad. Behind the panic buying was a movement to reflect, Behind the daily briefings was a united effort to protect, We all came together to fight COVID, Look what can be done when we are all devoted. But there is another global crisis that hasn’t gone away, It is threatening and dangerous and it must be kept at bay, It is knocking on our door and we already see the effects worldwide, The Climate Crisis is still here and it can no longer be denied. The time has come for us all to up our game, Or we risk our world never being the same. We must remain united to address this emergency, I am call on everyone to act with urgency. The pandemic has shown us what is important and what we cherish, We cannot let everything we have fought for and love just perish. Change can be hard but we can all give a helping hand, We are in this together so together we must stand By Orla Thornton

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre I’m so glad to report that my own riders and their carers are all back visiting me, and nobody has complained of the cold as we work with the door and a window wide open. Such troopers! Outside the arena is covered in leaves, the horses are rugged up, and the volunteers are in natty bobble hats and an assortment of coats. I can watch all the activities from my open room. Did you see the rainbows in November? We had a beauty over Shelly and clever Yvette took this lovely photo, over Tilly’s head. Our coloured pony, Snoopy, is beginning to do his RDA work at last. He has taken longer than most to settle but we welcome him onto the team. Lyn is still very careful about how he gets used. Like all the live herd here, horses and ponies have to adapt to little consistency in how they are handled. With up to 100 volunteers helping (not all at once!) there are bound to be differences in how they are groomed, tacked up and lead. It can make a chap nervous and twitchy, let me tell you. I’m so excited that this year the Shelley Centre carol service will be entirely in house. None of the participants, ponies, visitors or helpers has to process to Shelly church because, much as everyone loves doing so, the church gets so crowded it would not be safe. For the first time I shall be able to hear what goes on. We shall have the Serendipity choir to help everyone sing beautifully and the Silver Band will just finish the evening off nicely. December 4th is the date, 4pm the start of the service. You won’t be hearing from the Centre during the school holidays, so let me wish you a very happy Christmas from all the equine team, real or simulated. Website: shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172
The Hadleigh Historian Issue 67 (December 2021 - January 2022) This issue begins the twelfth year of The Hadleigh Historiian publication and The Hadleigh Historian is The Haadleigh Historiaan pleased to welcome again to its pages Issue 67 Decem mber 2021 - January ry 2022 Price £4 Russell Pipe of Maidstone in Kent. In Issue 65, he helped to name members of the Salvation Army and now Russell, who spent the first ten years of his life in Hadleigh, recalls his time at Bridge Street Junior Boys School between 1959 and 1962.He introduces us to well-remembered teachers Miss Prior, Mrs Harland and Mr Jones, traces from his home in Station Road the route along High Street to school, past Groves' garage and the police station, past Richardson and Preece with its amazing smell of animal feed, Bloomfield's bakery and Partridge's, the ironmongers and agricultural store. He also tells of what boys got up to when the builders went home after working on the new housing development that became Tayler Road, Gaell Crescent and Yeoman Crescent. Another pupil at Bridge Street but seventy years earlier, was to become firstly a pupil teacher and then an assistant master at the school. In the occasional series "Tales from the War Memorials', Jeff Ward recounts the life of "Thomas Samuel Smith of the Suffolk Yeomanry', who joined a part-time cavalry squadron in 1910 while still teaching there and the following year, represented the yeomanry at King George V's coronation. When war broke out in 1914, Sam, as he was known, was expecting to defend the Suffolk coast but with his fellow troopers volunteered for overseas service as infantrymen. Jeff tells of the dreadful conditions at Gallipoli, of Sam's time in the Egyptian desert, his promotion and his participation at the taking of Jerusalem, where he lies buried. As a popular young man in Hadleigh, a memorial dedicated to Sam was unveiled in 1918 at the school. ‘Wilful murder and attempted suicide’ relates the events of the evening of 16 June 1831 when Thomas Chisnall and William Offord were found in George Street, both bleeding profusely from their injuries, the consequences were that one man was to live and the other was to die. The story unfolds as medical assistance was called for and the parish constable investigated. A post mortem and inquest were held, the victim was buried in St Mary's churchyard and the alleged murderer taken to Bury St Edmunds gaol to await his trial, where both verbal and physical evidence were presented in court. Medical opinion was taken into consideration and the prisoner spoke in his own defence. The judge summed up and the jurymen returned their verdict. Twelve years later, these events at Hadleigh and Bury St Edmunds were retold at the Old Bailey as part of the notorious case concerning the assassination of the Prime Minister's secretary. The wonderful photograph on the front cover of this issue was taken by Martin Looker of Layham, who cycled into Hadleigh in order to record the removal of the arboreal companion to the Deanery Tower, the magnificent lime tree that had stood overlooking the southern churchyard for at least two hundred years. Issue 67 is now available price £4 at Avis the Newsagent and The Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop, Semer. A one-year subscription (6 issues plus postage) costs £30 from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG (01449 740673).

Photo Credit: Gregg Brown and Babergh District Council Dedicated Covid recovery, almost £5m in improved leisure facilities and a CCTV upgrade will all go towards improving the quality of life of Babergh residents, members heard this week. Councillors at Babergh’s Full Council meeting on Tuesday 2nd November received an update on the ongoing efforts of the council’s communities team. Assistant Director for Communities, Nadeem Murtuja, outlined the impact of Covid and the assistance provided, with contact made to over 6,000 clinically extremely vulnerable Babergh and Mid Suffolk residents and 1,500 calls taken via the Home But Not Alone service from those experiencing isolation, difficulty securing food and medicine, or money worries. He also shared the financial support offered by the council including the introduction of its Emerging Needs Grants during the peak of the pandemic, which saw £70,744 in funding allocated to 48 charities and organisations directly providing Covid response in their local communities. This formed part of the £622,000 in total community grants administered during 2020/21 to recipients such as Long Melford Football Club – who received £75,000 towards its new club house – as well as local charities including Sudbury Citizens Advice, Community Action Suffolk and Lighthouse Women’s Aid, among others. The grants application process has now been digitalised to make applying for funding even easier and since April £308,000 has been allocated to 45 projects across the district, complementing the council’s ongoing work with partners to support community groups restarting following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. Babergh’s recovery from the pandemic also forms a key part of its recently adopted Wellbeing Strategy, outlining the council’s commitment to ensuring that its residents have the best possible conditions for good wellbeing. To help achieve this, almost £5 million has been invested in the district’s leisure facilities – enabling the refurbishment and modernisation of Hadleigh Pool and the Kingfisher Leisure Centre. This includes the installation of a new pool pod lift, Changing Places toilet and shower and improved disabled access at Hadleigh Pool – supporting the council’s ambition for sustainable and inclusive spaces which maximise health and wellbeing opportunities. Helping residents get fit and healthy, whatever their age, remains a priority for the council, who continues to deliver its Active Schools project at eight sites across Babergh, as well as offering an Active Well-Being Project in Glemsford and Shotley to promote staying active later in life. In addition to facilitating sport and leisure, the council has assisted its communities with learning new skills including preparing low cost, tasty and healthy meals. Two cohorts – low income families and elderly isolated residents – recently completed a cookery course in Hadleigh, set up by the communities team along with the Rural Coffee Caravan and renowned local chef Justin Kett. Attendees learnt how to prepare nutritious meals and also received ingredients, recipe cards and a slow cooker to enable them to replicate the meals in their own homes. One participant Carolyn commented on the difference the course had made to her life: “Thank you for giving us the weekly cookery classes with Justin, they have been a real inspiration to prepare more healthy food for myself. It’s been an experience I personally will never forget and I now have the zest to cook more interesting meals.” Hadleigh residents have also benefitted from an upgraded round the clock CCTV system, installed in the town and Sudbury over the summer. There are now 28 state-of-the-art cameras in both towns, ensuring that they remain safe places that people are proud to live in and visit. Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh’s cabinet member for Communities said: “It’s difficult to summarise the incredible work of the communities team since the pandemic began as I know how much activity has taken place to not only support our residents through the challenges posed by Covid, but also help our communities to build back even better. I feel privileged to be part of such a fantastic team who, along with our wonderful partners, continue to ensure that everyone is equipped with the facilities, skills and help they need to lead active, healthy, safe and independent lives. Although there’s already much to celebrate, such as our significant investment in our district’s leisure centres and our new CCTV system for Sudbury and Hadleigh, this doesn’t mean there isn’t still work to be done. I look forward to us achieving even more over the next six months, including making progress on implementing our new Wellbeing Strategy.”
French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, with the big day of festive joy fast approaching, Happy Christmas to you all. French’s have had better support this year, with people stepping in to help us, it’s been lovely to see and shows there are locals out there that have a kind heart and want to do something to help their local charity. We still have several colleges sending their students to us and more Duke of Edinburgh awards teenagers and we have helped more people with depression and anxiety problems. So I am pleased with the busy and successful year we have had in 2021. Along the way French’s have found some great helpers and I hope that our solid team grows and more locals come on board with us, in the way of hands on help and financial help, because we need both, I emphasise, we really do need both, to keep us going now and for the future. So if you are reading this please try to do one or the other, as we need you. One photo is of Frankie and Costa playing with their ball and the other photo is of store staff members standing with me at Gladwells in Copdock. Paul, Amy and Colin have been amazing in the way of helping with our animals feed, I would like to thank Chloe from the store as well. This group of people and the stores management have stuck by us for some years now and I cannot praise them enough for the various things they have helped French’s with. Split bags that customers do not want to purchase come to us and with our reels of duck tape at hand, bags are sealed and our animals are fed, what more can I say, but Thank You Gladwells and Happy Christmas. Sadly no one has stepped forward to help us get the ground ready for a portable wooden unit, which we have purchased for things like, our animal’s equipment and first aid. We have the wooden unit sitting there in the wrapping and desperately need hands on help with someone who knows what they are doing, to put it together for us, there is no concreting to do, as this is not a permanent structure. If we had the money to pay someone that would be great, but we do not, so we need someone’s kindness and good will. Please, please, call me if you can help in any way. I would like to thank Charmaine for donating 3 of her painting to us for our quiz and Christmas raffle and I also give a thank you to a lovely elderly lady called Win, who lives in Hadleigh, Win called me to pick up a large wall picture of a horse that she bought many years ago from an artist. Win said she loved the painting, but said it was no use to her when she passes away and said we could sell it as her donation. I told Win hopefully she has many more years left in her, bless her dear heart. If you would like to make a Christmas donation to us at French’s go to our website: Frenchs care haven.org.uk where there is a donation button, or call me if you would like to come along meet the animals and donate at the farm. Not far away now to a new year 2022, let’s hope it is a good year and we stay healthy and well. I would like to send a huge Thank You to our monthly sponsors, you are all shinning stars. Happy Christmas and have a Happy New Year. French’s is a charity on your doorstep, can you help, either with time, donations, or sponsorship. You are welcome to come along and meet our animals. Call me for an appointment. Jann on: 07747 755556 or email: jann.turner@hotmail.co.uk. www.frenchscarehaven.org.uk

Firstly some thank you's...Thanks to the HUFC Committee, the wonderful band of Volunteers who made everything ready for our Firework Display, thanks also to those who helped on the night, patrolling the grounds, cooking and serving food and drinks. Thanks to the Staff at Avis Newsagents for once again helping this event by selling our advance tickets. But special thanks go to you the Residents of Hadleigh and the surrounding area for supporting this event, with our highest ever attendance. Will we do it again in 2022 providing there are no restrictions the answer is YES - Friday November 4th. On the Footballing front the First Team after what can only be described as a ‘blip’ after a string of defeats have go back to wining ways to see them around the midtable position in their league. The Reserves have also suffered some defeats and victories over the past few matches, again they are hovering around the mid-table position in their league. Our newly formed S.I.L ‘Brettsiders’ have enjoying a good spell of matches which has seen them moved into the top five of their league, but they could be higher as they suffered 2 late call off's from their opponents at the last minute. The U18's are improving with each match in their first season together with a much needed win not too far away. As this is the December edition it is that time of year to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, if you wish to walk off the excess food over the xmas period we have a local derby match on December 27th against Brantham Athletic so why not wander down to the Millfield and give us a look Millfielder

On Saturday 30th October, Hadleigh United Community Programme U7s Minis attended their first 4v4 football festival at East Bergholt FC. The boys and girls took part in games against Holbrook, Framlingham Town, Kirton Kestrels, Felixstowe, Stow Falcons, Copleston and East Bergholt. The children had lots of fun, demonstrated their skills and showed lots of enthusiasm. We would like to thank Skar Mouldings for kindly sponsoring match kits for the community football programme.
Beaujolais Brunch at Stoke 75 members of Stoke-by-Nayland GC met for the annual Beaujolais “Brunch” Scramble. It’s been 2 years since this event was last held due to Covid. Teams are made up of 4 players and could be any combination. 4 drives from each team member must be used with 2 spare. It’s a medal round, less your team handicap therefore giving you a final nett score. The weather was kind to the players with overcast skies but no rain! Top spot was taken by Diana Harris, Bob Tokely, Ian Smith & John Sandford. They shot a gross 70-15=55. 2nd place went to Guy Williamson, Katy Williamson, Karl Hepple & Rosie Mason with a gross 72-17=55 losing out ocb. 3rd place was Tim Dickens, Tracey Dickens, Ian Thompson & Bev Thompson with a gross 65-10=55. A brunch was provided after the round with a presentation to the winners. Photo shows the winners: Diana Harris, Bob Tokely, Ian Smith & John Sandford. Hadleigh Evening WI When people from some distance away ask me where I live the frequent response is 'Oh Hadleigh, Partridges and that lovely bookshop The Idler'. At our meeting this month Jane Haylock came to tell us about her experiences with husband Bryan in The Idler which they opened in 1980. We learnt a lot abut the value of books - exceptional if these are ever worth what folk think. Sadly supermarkets, Amazon and the like have all but killed the independent booksellers - only about 1,000 shops left in Engand. Jane and Bryan have had some very interesting encounters. For example, a visiting American came across a book he had been looking for for years. In fact, that is one of their greatest pleasures when a visitor to the shop espies a book that they had given up ever finding. Do support the shop it is a super place to just browse. They have a lot of local interest books, some lovely cards and you can purchase book tokens. Thank you Jane for a very illuminating and interesting talk. Look out for the recycling collection points in the Co-op - plastic wrapping, cling film, pet food pouches, crisp packets which we are supporting. The next meeting is our Christmas Party on Tuesday 21st December. We meet every third Tuesday (not Monday as I wrote last month!) at 7.30pm upstairs in the seminar room of the library (there is a lift). We have a full programme of speakers for next year, starting with 'Dad's Army' in January and 'Remarkable Women of Ipswich' in February. If you think you might like to join the WI, come along for a 'taster' evening - you will be most welcome. Please contact the Secretary Glenn Abbassi on 07870 312409 and we will look out for you. Vic Faccini - 2021 Challenge Completed
Earlier this year, I wrote about my challenge to run and walk 2021 miles by the end of 2021. My aim was to raise money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal during this, their Centenary Year. I am now pleased to announce that my challenge has been completed. ran my last mile on the 11th of November, finishing at the Hadleigh Royal British Legion. I aimed to finish on Armistice Day as this would provide a fitting end to my challenge. Although I managed to avoid illness and injury, it did mean that I had to put in an extra effort during the few weeks leading up to this date. This paid off and I managed to complete my last mile in time to make the 2 minute silence held in Hadleigh High Street. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported my challenge by making a donation. To date, with your help, we have managed to raise a total of £690.28p. Gift Aid raises this to £819.53p. With so many charities needing support, and with the pandemic potentially creating difficulties for some, this is a fantastic amount. Your support has made all my efforts worthwhile. Donations are still being accepted until the end of the year. Should anyone wish to make a donation, you can do so by visiting www.justgiving.com/fundraising/victor-faccini. Please also remember to select Gift Aid. Thank you so very much, Vic

Hadleigh Community Forum Tuesday 9th November 2021, Chair: Very Revd Jo Delfgou The meetings are always informative and often fun, this was no exception. Members reflected back to various points from the last set of minutes and we heard more about the role and responsibility of the Environment Agency in respect of our river. The River Brett is monitored for potential flooding and the AE is responsible for this as well as dealing with any litter that might cause a blockage. If you notice anything then please do contact AE on 0800 807 060 at any time, or report it to their email: incident_communication_service@environmentagency.gov.uk or Report an environmental incident - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). Any other litter needs to picked up (!) or reported to the particular landowner. At the meeting there were six reports: The Town Council wanted to remind us all that there are still moneys available for grants for local groups etc which need to be registered as soon as possible. Babergh Council sent a written report. Our dynamic Visit Hadleigh group spoke about the success of the pop-up visitor centre and the large number of tourists who visit us. The centre is constantly looking for premises on the High Street, were most visitors arrive, but with few financial resources are really in need of generous hospitality. If you have not visited www.visthadleighsuffolk.co.uk, you really should. Likewise, if you are part of a Hadleigh based group or club, please do send across a link. We are also thankful for their determination to brighten up the town with flowers and plants. Please watch the work at the Market Place gardens. snowdonjane@hotmail.co.uk Our Tidy Town litter pickers are constantly picking up rubbish and would value more volunteers. They will on task on 4th December ‘Lighting Up’ event to ensure that the town looks good. We can all help by putting our rubbish in a bin or taking it home with us! We also wondered whether the young folk might like to join in noticing that the team is made up of the fit but retired. ourtidytown@gmail.com Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Care Group were riding o the wave of excitement at having enabled the Practice to offer 2030 vaccinations at St Mary’s Church. Sadly to initial organisation was thrown out by the recipients not sticking to their times and others demanding ‘car park’ vaccinations when some were not really needed. The problem of parking was also noted but was far outweighed by the ability to have a local jab. The next cohort (50-70) will have been vaccinated by the time you read this and we are all incredibly thankful to the Practice and their long-suffering team of volunteers who have given so much of their time to help, cajole and greet us all. Our thanks were offered to the Group and the Health Centre. www.hadleighhealth.co.uk The report from St Mary’s Church community also touched on the vaccinations as a very good example of how the Church building can help the community. There was a clear description of the complex repair work that is currently taking place. sadly, once completed, you may not even notice the huge amount of work that has been done. There is also an interesting project being carried out in the upstairs of the vestry in the north corner of the church. Some restoration, some creative development which will be able to be seen when finished! Alongside this the huge lime tree beside the tower is now down but will be remembered. A slice of trunk is to be sanded and varnished and displayed with a corresponding time-line. This will mark the time it spent beside the tower. This will be produced by our many historians and others. We also heard: That the land in front of Hadleigh Hall (the building with amazing chimneys near the church) had been sold to a private buyer who intends to maintain it as a garden. That the initial impression of Hadleigh was receiving some mixed feedback and there were some areas that might need some attention. That HEAT, our green energy champions, were organising Wednesday sessions (from 10 am) to clear undergrowth, plant saplings and improving habitat for our wildlife and for our joy. All volunteers are welcome and for any length of time. Contact wild123@talktalk.net. That our Queen will reach her Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and celebrations are planned between 2nd and 5th June. Keep watch for details Finally, as I was chairing the meeting, I chose to talk about the Deanery Tower. We are meeting shortly with the St Edmundsbury and Ipswich Diocesan Secretary to discuss how the Tower, which is part of the Deanery living accommodation, can be better used for the town and be open to visits etc. The historical importance of this building in both local and Church history is immense and we hope to celebrate this whilst remembering that it is part of a house, has an office in it and some very tricky stairs! The date of our next meeting will be 14th December in the Chair: Mrs Sylvia Martin
