EXCELLENT FARES RELIABLE SERVICE
01473 829700 bookings@hadleighprivatehire.co.uk
Thankyou for your presence...
Can you imagine having to peel 30 kilos of potatoes, 10 kilos of parsnips and 5 each of carrots and sprouts? That is exactly what our incredible team of volunteers got stuck into on Christmas Day to cater for 85 people at the Christmas Present Trust meal in the Ansell Centre. The atmosphere was lovely, no Christmas Day arguments over what to watch on television, no overly large portions making anyone ill, no squabbling over present size or cost, just a wonderful collection of guests and volunteers enjoying a scrumptious meal courtesy of the catering team, and some glorious music thanks to Graham Holmes. The event felt even more like a community effort this time. We could not have done it without support from the following people, to whom we say a sincere and warmest thank you for your contribution. Our reliable and hard-working volunteers, who gave up time over Christmas to make the event so special, we were particularly delighted that the Mayor of Hadleigh rolled up her sleeves and got stuck in on Christmas Day, Hadleigh TSB, Bryan Goodwin at BGA Print, The Co-op, The George, Adnams, Morrisons, The Emporium, Hadleigh Town Council, The Thrift Shop, Franey and Rand Charities, EADT, Pacari Chocolates, chef Mark David, BBC Radio Suffolk, Supreme Pet foods, Hadleigh Walkers, The Ram, The Ansell Centre Charity, Hadleigh Ipswich Building Society who look after the money the generosity of the people of Hadleigh for their continuing support of The Christmas Present Trust, and not forgetting Kelvin, Matt and the incredible team at Hadeligh Community News for expert media coverage. We would like to invite all our volunteers to a ‘thank you’ catch up social get together at The George pub, (upstairs room – nibbles provided) on Wednesday 21st February starting at 7pm. Looking forward to seeing you all again, where we will share photos and one or two interesting bits of news. Sarah and Simon Thompson

Songs of Praise Gospel Choir of the Year 2017 – Our very own Big Sing!
G% ' '& IBBONS !% Howard at the Office
We are delighted to share that the very talented Big Sing that have entertained us so wonderfully while raising funds for local charities and the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance were the WINNERS of the Songs of Praise Gospel Choir of the Year 2017. We are all so proud of their success. The Big Sing have performed for the community four times over recent years. The most recent being on Saturday 7th October 2017 when we welcomed a huge crowd of over 200 local residents to enjoyed an evening of music and laugher while raising money for two great causes. David Grant hosted the competition to find this year’s best Gospel Choir. The big sing has been finalist in 2015 but two years on there was no stopping them. The five leading amateur choirs took to the stage of Centre Hall Westminster in London to compete for the prestigious trophy. The judges included singer and songwriter Seal, broadcaster and worship leader Muyiwa Olarewaju, and award winning gospel specialist Karen Gibson. The Big Sing, performed two numbers both of which have been included in the set while performing on the stage at the United Reformed Church in Market Place Hadleigh. Some would say a great platform to prepare for this big moment. These included Praise the Lord and Souled Out. Barbara, Joan and Martin who support the Big Sing each year had the great fortune of watching the choirs rise to success. Tracey Loynds HDAA say’s “we are so immensely proud of the choir and cannot wait to see the award winners once again this coming Autumn, put the date into your diary now for a great night out for the whole family; Saturday 13th October 2018. The Big Sing is sponsored by the Hadleigh Thrift Shop and would not happen without their ongoing support in the Community. Our thanks go out to Barbara, Joan and Martin for their ongoing support each year. We could not do this without them. them every year, do you want to mention that Barbara, Joan and Martin K from Hadleigh Thrift Shop came to the live TV taping to support us? If you would like to know more about becoming a dementia friend or get involved with Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, you can email us now at hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk For more information on dementia friends visit: www.alzheimers.dementiafriends.org.uk

Recipe for Success Sarah Thompson I’m not sure if I am late for last year, or early for this! However, if you are vegetarian or you struggle to find really tasty and unique gluten-free recipes, then this one is for you. It is wholesome and delicious, and comes courtesy of my husband, Simon. One to share with friends or family. The Christmas Present Trust Gluten-Free nut roast Ingredients: 1 Medium aubergine (to line the tin) sliced thinly Olive oil – to oil tin and drizzle, Salt and freshly ground pepper to season 40g (1.5oz) butter, 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 celery sticks, finely chopped, 1 garlic clove, crushed 175g (6oz) shelled mixed nuts, roughly chopped 50g (2oz) shelled pistachio nuts, roughly chopped 100g (4oz) mixed seeds, 100g (4oz) Gluten free breadcrumbs Grated rind and juice of half a lemon, 100g (4oz) mature Cheddar, grated 100g (4oz) chestnuts, roughly chopped, 2 eggs, beaten 4 tbsp chopped fresh parsley, Sprigs of parsley to serve, 900g (2lb) loaf tin Method 1. Heat the oven to 200oC (Fan 180oC) – Gas 6 2. Line the loaf tin (foil or paper) and oil lightly 3. Placed the sliced aubergine on a baking tray and place under the grill until partly cooked and slightly golden – no more than 5 minutes. If the aubergine is cooking quickly reduce the time under the grill – it will cook fully in the oven. Leave to one side to cool. 4. Melt the butter in a pan and add the onion, celery and garlic and fry until soft, stirring gently. Spoon into a large mixing bowl and leave to cool. 5. Once cool add the remaining ingredients, season well and stir thoroughly. 6. Place the cool aubergine slices into the loaf tin lengthways so they fully line and overlap the tin. Spoon the mixture into the tin and press it down firmly. Fold the ends of the aubergine over the top of the mixture. 7. Cover with foil and cook for 50 minutes to an hour. Turn out onto a serving plate and garnish with parsley. Slice and serve. You can cook this a few days in advance and reheat at about 160oC (Gas 4) for about an hour or until piping hot. This loaf will freeze for about a month and must be fully defrosted prior to reheating.

Matthew Gallo – Independent Mortgage Adviser Did you know that when you find a property you are keen to purchase, and decide you would like to put an offer to the selling estate agent to pass on to their vendor, you are not obliged to disclose any financial details, nor are you obliged to sit down with that estate agent’s mortgage adviser, to ‘verify your purchase position’. Similarly, you do not have to provide an Agreement in Principle (AIP) – or Decision in Principle (DIP), to that selling agent, to prove your purchase position. You decide who you refer to for your mortgage advice. Just so you know, an AIP or DIP from a mortgage lender, is basically just a glorified credit score – nothing more. It does not mean you have a mortgage agreed, nor does it confirm your purchase position, it simply means you have passed that lenders’ credit score. Any mortgage adviser worth their salt, can sit down with any client, review their personal and financial position, assess their documentation and establish and confirm a purchase position, without submitting a totally unnecessary credit score to a mortgage lender. Just think about the process of visiting estate agents as you look for a property to buy, and the number of agents you will typically register with and view property through. I meet clients who have been exposed to numerous and frankly pointless AIP’s and DIP’s undertaken by mortgage advisers, and guess what – all these credit scores are registered against you – potentially prejudicing your purchase positon, rather than enhancing it. Think about it, all these credit scores – and all based on assumed figures – not accurate ones, and if the figures change, or it takes a while for you to find a property to buy, it is likely to not even be that lender you ultimately use for your mortgage. The only time a mortgage adviser should undertake an Agreement in Principle or Decision in Principle, is when a purchase price is actually agreed, and mortgage figures can be put to a mortgage lender accurately. If an adviser has concerns about a client’s credit history, the client can simply produce a general credit score via any number of on line sources. Doing an AIP or DIP will not give an adviser the information they need credit history wise. From an advice perspective, my attitude and approach is simple and straightforward, with the only way to conduct a mortgage review, remortgage or purchase application case, being to spend time collating the facts. A thorough understanding of a clients’ personal and financial position in the first instance, with comprehensive information gathering - as well as making sure all relevant documentation is provided by my client and held on file, before any approach is made by me to a mortgage lender to discuss a case. If the case facts are understood clearly from outset by both adviser and mortgage lender, it limits any issues or misunderstanding as an application progresses. In my opinion, that is the only way to so the job properly, securing what everybody wants – a great, competitive mortgage, that is clearly explained by the adviser, completely understood by the client, and utterly meeting the needs of the borrower. I can meet you in my office above Frost & Partners Estate Agents in Hadleigh, and any initial meeting for a general conversation, would be without both charge and commitment. Can you help? On Wednesday 20th December 2017, walking between Dunton Grove and the Kings Head in Hadleigh I lost a bracelet. Although not a huge financial value it does have significant sentimental value. It is a series of pearl like stones, cream, white and grey in colour with a silver circle fastening. I appreciate that without a Police Station it is difficult to know where to hand in lost property but if you have seen this bracelet I would be most grateful to hear from you. Whatfield CEVCP School are once again celebrating excellent results in the schools performance last year. Results show that pupils, from whatever their starting point make excellent progress due to the fantastic teaching and learning evident at the school. This doesn’t always show in published data, as the numbers involved are small and therefore suppressed, but individual published data confirms the schools continuing success. We are still a very small school, but are now 44 pupils, large for us, and this popularity together with our partnership with Bildeston Primary school, gives us confidence for the future. We ensure our curriculum is exciting and innovative, especially as we are the only school locally to teach the international primary curriculum. Pupils were excited to find their French lessons were even more inspiring recently as they had the chance to taste all things French, including snails, which were actually a very popular treat! Our recent visit to Duxford ensures pupils were taught about history within living memory, and they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to explore the aircraft at the museum. Sporting success continued this year, with the success of our dodgeball team, and also opportunity for three excellent gymnasts to enter an elite gym competition in Harlow later in the month. The pupils have worked hard to develop an interesting and challenging routine. Cross country at Hadleigh High was another highlight of the Autumn term, and individuals love the opportunity to challenge themselves against their personal bests, as well as against the other teams. We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome. Please do telephone 01473 823 309 or email admin@whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk to make an arrangement to meet us. Lynne Golding, Headteacher www.whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk

Hadleigh Evening WI Our New Year was off to a flying start with a large turn-out for our January meeting. We were joined by members of some of the other W.I.'s within our Group, as well as some other guests and even a few husbands. Our speakers were Sandy & Ellen, whose talk on Deep Sea Diving we had so enjoyed some time ago and we begged them to come back. Sandy dressed up in a wet suit with full equipment, while Ellen explained the less obvious features, such as, the hidden extra air cylinder, the weights and the computer on the wrist. They both explained about the difficulties of filming fast-moving fish and how you often have to wait for a long time to capture the desired footage. We were then thrilled and delighted with several film sequences with accompanying music. We learned how octopuses are masters of disguise as we saw them gracefully shift, transform, blend and change colour to match their surroundings. We saw shoals of small fish dart about, dance and make patterns like birds in flight. Turtles were another delight and, of course, dolphins with which we saw Sandy and Ellen interact and stroke. Different sharks are a favourite of Sandy's and she says that they are much maligned. They have both dived many times in areas of the Red Sea but more recently, for the first time, they went to the Pacific where one of their most fascinating sights was a whole cave full of sleeping sharks all lying side by side! They showed us footage of different rays, of which, the largest is the Manta Ray. However, in the Pacific, they were awed by the size of the Giant Pacific Manta Ray. I think that Attenborough himself would have enjoyed their show. Our next talk will be about, ‘Nursing In Yemen’ by Frances Moore. It will take place on the third Tuesday of the month in the Seminar suite above the library. As usual, new members are always welcome.
Defibrillator now installed! As we had so desperately hoped - our defibrillator was installed on Christmas Eve at the Ansell Centre. A last minute hitch was created by the very late delivery of the cabinet requiring a late visit from the electrical contractor before the defibrillator for Hadleigh installation was complete ready for Christmas. Our continued thanks for all those who gave so generously and speedily to get this in place. Our photograph shows two of our major fund-raisers, Barbara Breeze and Julie Phillips, with Roger Jay (head of the appeal team) with the installed cabinet and defibrillator at the Ansell Centre. Julie raised funds in memory of her daughter Rebecca who passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition in 2010 whilst Barbara chairs the Friday Lunch Club event. The next commitment for the team is to publicise the existence and availability of the equipment and to promote and encourage awareness training on how to use the defibrillator and how to complete CPR. In January two training sessions were successfully completed and there are to be two more in February and March: Monday 5th February commencing at 7pm through to 10pm Monday 19th February commencing at 3pm through to 6pm Friday 9th March commencing at 2pm through to 5pm – and Friday 23rd March commencing at 7pm through to 10pm All sessions are held in the Community Room located at the ‘rear’ of the United Reformed Church and take about 40 minutes. To book a space on any of these events please call Roger on 01473 823642 (please don’t ‘just’ turn up as we strictly control numbers undertaking the training at each session). In due course we will announce further training sessions.

Hadleigh’s ukulele group (HUG) is launching a group for complete beginners. It will meet on the same night as our regular group meetings, i.e. the first and third Tuesday of every month. Anyone over 16 is welcome to attend. The first session will be on Tuesday 6th March at 7.30pm in the United Reformed Church (Committee Room entrance). There will be a small charge per session to cover costs. So, if you are thinking of playing a musical instrument then there is nothing better than a ukulele. Perhaps you’ve just got your first ukulele and you need some help with this wonderful and fun instrument, either way HUG beginners’ is for you. All you need is a sense of fun, a little bit of musicality and a ukulele. If you love music and want to make music, then you are ready to join the happy, ego-free world of the ukulele player, and HUG beginners’ can be your starting point. Whether you come on your own, or with a friend, you will find a warm welcome and lots of support and encouragement. If, however, you have some experience playing the ukulele why not come along on the first and third Tuesday of every month and join in the pleasure of playing and singing with our regular group? We meet at 7.30pm in the Committee Room of the United Reformed Church. Our aim is to play together, learn new songs and techniques, share ideas, and not take ourselves too seriously. For the more confident HUG members we make the occasional public appearance when we go on stage and perform for local good causes and community groups. The Hadleigh Historian
Over age 55 – Retiring soon?
Issue 44 (February – March 2018) In part 2 of memories of Hadleigh during the 1950s, Jane Richardson recounts her The Hadleigh Historian The Hadleigh Historian schooldays at Threadneedle Street. Firstly, Issue 44 February - March 2018 Price £3 she takes us on her journey to school from Gallows Street, which can be followed on an aerial view of the town on the back cover, mentioning the shops and characters that she passed. Then, on arrival at Threadneedle Street, which catered for boys from five to seven years old and girls from five to eleven, Jane takes us through the school day. Do you remember the reason why the site was nicknamed ‘the conker school’, the outside toilet block with no roof or washing facilities and the route at lunchtimes? She also gives a thumb-nail description of the teaching staff and some of the incidents that happened during her time there. In ‘Hadleigh boy makes good in Australia’, Jane Byrne and Sue Andrews tell the story of Robert ‘Bobbie’ Rand who, at the time of his death in 1894, was considered to be the second richest man in Australia. His life is recounted including transforming poor-quality arable land in New South Wales into excellent sheep-farming country by careful water conservation. Apparently, ‘Mad-Dog’ Morgan, a notorious outlaw used a particular rock formation on Bobbie Rand’s estate to overlook surrounding countryside in order to plan his criminal activities. For over 600 years, fairs had been held in Hadleigh until nimbyism got the better of residents local to Market Place, who used new legislation of the mid 19th century to abolish these annual events. ‘When Hadleigh lost its fairs’ tells of one man’s attempt to persuade local magistrates not do away with such long-held traditions. Nigel Crisp introduces us to his great-grandfather Stephen Vince as the maker of the gates that usher worshippers and visitors into the Row Chapel in George Street. Do you have a family story that you would like to share? Please contact the editor: Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Roads, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG. Telephone 01449 740673 Available at Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop, still only £3.

Following the raid, concrete posts were positioned along the front of the premises. Scaffolding erected along the S aisle of St. Mary’s church to facilitate the renewal of eroded stone tracery work. March New red metal ‘Hadleigh’ sign has been erected on the road from Layham leading towards the town. April A Grand Piano has been acquired for St. Mary’s Church. Kitty & Em ladies clothes shop opens in the High Street, next to Jon Cutter Hairdressers. The Vape Locker opens in the High Street (opposite Holbrows Garage), vaping is a anti smoking substitute. A roof fire broke out at the building still being rebuilt following a major fire in 2014 (October) on the Industrial Estate, Primo May An electronic organ has been donated to the Row Chapel, George Street. The old harmonium has been removed. East House, in George Street, empty for some ten years has been sold by Babergh District Council. As part of the Hadleigh Festival of Gardens & Art Year, a collage of artificial flowers upon green background boards have been fixed to the railings of the High Street Car-Park. The Hadleigh Show held at Holbecks and said to have attracted a record attendance. Held in sunny weather but there was a heavy shower during the afternoon. There are currently three sets of scaffolding to facades along the High Street. The repairing of plaster work exposes the timber frame for a short time before the new work covers it up again. Sir Geoff Hurst (1966 World Cup hat-trick Hero) was guest of honour at the Hadleigh United Football Club, Celebrity Dinner, held in a marquee at Millfield. Attendance was about 240. June The scaffolding along the south aisle of St. Mary’s church has now been removed following the completion of repairs to the stonework of the windows. Universal Stone were the contractors. New lighting has been installed in the Row Chapel, including up-lighting to highlight the fine original roof timbers. The Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh event held in sunshine by the Friends of St. Mary’s Church. The Dean, the Rev. Martin Thrower, was found guilty at Norwich Crown Court of voyeurism. Scaffolding erected to gain access to the church clock mechanism which has been taken away to be repaired and the clock face re-painted. July Challs (cleaning products) new ÂŁ3.5m factory officially opened on the industrial estate following a major fire three years ago. Rev. August The Dean, who is currently suspended, sentenced to four months prison term, suspended, after being found guilty last June. The Jolly Butcher shop façade in the High Street is being re-modelled. September Plum Green shop in the High Street closes briefly for refurbishment work. The former Whitle Lion Hotel has scaffolding along its road frontage. Molly’s Store in Long Bessells is being refurbished and is under new management. The first John Bloomfield Memorial lectures held in St. Mary’s Church for the Friends of St. Mary’s Church. Traditional Building in Suffolk was the topic. A new property us under construction at the Stations Road end of Magdalen Road. October The autumn colours seem to be earlier this year than usual. A sonic boom heard all over the county and beyond at 8.38am. It was the result of a security alert on an inbound passenger flight. RAF Typhoons intercepted. It turned out to be a hoax. Security fencing is erected around East House, George Street, now planning approval has been granted for its conversion by the new owner. On the 16th the former hurricane Ophelia hit Ireland. Here after a sunny morning, the sky became a yellow/grey colour and the sun turned red making an unusual phenomenon. Dusk came earlier than normal. The cause was said to be that the hurricane winds had sucked up ash from Portugeuse fires, together with sand particles to filter out the true light. The Babergh District Council offices in Corks Lane close. Offices in Sudbury and Stowmarket, main office now in Ipswich jointly working with Mid-Suffolk D. C. November On 23rd the refurbished church clock-face was re-positioned, and the clock strikes the hours once again. Christmas Lights switch on in Long Bessells, the road was closed for the event. Brett Valley Review Issue 2 (Winter 2017-2018)
Issue 1 of Brett valley Review was received by Suffolk Local History Council as ‘an attractive, accessible and very well researched local history magazine and is Issue 2 Winter 2017-2018 Price ÂŁ5 highly recommended’, something to live up to in Issue 2. I hope that you will find the historical miscellany of interest starting with Monks Eleigh parishioners attending the church court a Hadleigh on matters of morality, Sabbath breaking and probate of wills and ending with the graceful village sign at Milden, with the river itself ‘from source to sea’ the subject of the colour feature. Other articles include moving house at Kersey, a charity providing bread or fuel at Preston St Mary and the site of Cosford, which gave its name to one of the districts through which the Brett flows. An interesting character is Revd John Clubbe of Whatfield (rector 1735-1773), whose circle of friends included artist Thomas Gainsborough and William Hogarth. John wrote satirical works, the most famous being The History of Antiquities of the Ancient Villa of Whatield, which has caught out many people over the centuries thinking it was a true history of Whatfield. However, it still makes an interesting read. Your letters, photographs and memories of the communities in the Brett valley during the recent past and articles relevant to their history are most welcome. Please let me know if you would like an aspect of local history investigated and I will do my best. On sale now price ÂŁ5 at Bildeston: Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio; Brent Eleigh: CafĂŠ Como; Hadleigh High Street: Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop; Monks Eleigh: Corn craft and The Post Office Stores; Semer: Hollow Trees Farm Shop. Surviving Winter in Hadleigh We are in our fourth year of existence so will outline our aims, if you are unaware of our registered charity. We aim to support those seniors (over 60) and disabled of all ages who are faced with the sudden and unexpected difficulties of winter. Our help can come from assistance to meet a heavy utilities bill, be it gas, oil, electricity or any other form of heating. We will assist with a heavy call out charge in an emergency (but not a standard maintenance visit). Should help be required to keep warm at night or bear the outside cold, we will provide thermal blankets and suitable night and daytime thermals. After giving assistance, if you are not on a registered charity suitable for your needs we will assist in helping you register if you so require. French’s Care Haven and Care Farm Firstly I would like to thank Partridges for holding a wooly jumper week over Christmas with a donation box at the tills. Thank you to all the customers and staff who raised £250 for our animal rescue charity. If there are any other businesses in and around Hadleigh who would like to help us, please get in touch, we will advertise the help your business gives and any donations we receive on our face page and to the Hadleigh and surrounding community. The animals in our care so far are making it through the winter ok, lots of food to keep their bellies full and keeping them all warm so they do not lose any weight is always our priority at this time of year. Picture enclosed is of 3 of our rescue mares that are saying “there is nothing much out here, we want to come into our warm cosy stable and eat loads of hay” On the people side of our work, the mental health groups have continued to come to French’s each week, through snow, wind and rain and have all still enjoyed themselves, which was nice to see. We have a new group due to start as I write this, these ladies have different problems and I hope they will settle in well with us. Essex University are continuing their Saturday slot with us and it is great to have their support. The wind this year has caused havoc with our fencing, fixing fencing seems to be a never ending daily job, we did get a quote for new fencing but it was a figure we could never hope to find, when we have so many outgoing bills to find donations for. If you know anyone who could help us with our fencing please do give me a call, I would very much appreciate some help on that score. As I have said many times before, if you have some spare time and would like to become part of our small team please come along and have a chat, we would love to have you come on board with us, we welcome all ages. One of our volunteers is Emily who is 13 years old, Emily is always trying to think outside the box on how to help raise some money for us. In January she wrote to a national horse magazine and ask for their help and they kindly sent along some items for us to sell, so that we could raise a bit of money. This is why for me at French’s I welcome on board any age of person, because you never know what they can achieve. Volunteers, Sponsors and Fund Raisers Needed Please contact: Jann Turner 01473 833944 / 07747 755556 Email: jann.turner@hotmail.co.uk

Fidelis Activity News Having accomplished and reported on a considerable number of events in last month’s column this leaves little to write about for this issue. Lunch Bunchers started our 2018 club events with a freshly prepared Italian lunch at Tito’s Restaurant on the High Street. Members made their menu choices beforehand from a set two course menu offered by owner, Kirstie Elliott. A tasty, lively lunch followed with a variety of topics up for discussion ranging from holes in the road to being PC and Twittering Trump. During the winter months the club’s Gentle Ramblers decided to join forces with the Allied Physio Group within the Hadleigh and Boxford Health Centre and walk each week. This is part of a countrywide initiative to encourage people to become more active. Walkers meet and set off with a guide from the Health Centre at 2pm every Friday. Up and coming projects will be a food bank collection to help local providers and a group action to make poppies for the forthcoming centenary displays to mark the end of WW1. JD

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I recently wrote a column like this one referring to a ram-raid attack on a Co-op store in Lavenham. Writing that, I did not expect that the very same evening I sent off the text for publication that another ram-raid would occur on the other Co-op in the very same village. After all, this comes alongside a spate of burglaries in Capel St Mary and a number of other incidents across the constituency. In short, law-breaking in South Suffolk really has become a great concern and I sympathise greatly with those unfortunate enough to have been the victim of such crimes. I know for you, the public at large, that when crime threatens you want to know that we have a visible police presence to deter criminals and reassure residents. Equally, there are many who are worried that we no longer have sufficient officers to perform such a role. After one of the most recent ram-raid incidents I put it point blank to one of Suffolk’s most senior police officers “do you have the resources to handle this issue” and they assured me 100% that they did. The ram-raid attacks have crossed county lines with many more incidents in Essex and Cambridgeshire, and I am assured that forces are cooperating to full effect, and that specialist crime units have been deployed. Of course, more resource would be welcome and the Government recently gave our PCC the power to raise the police precept (i.e. its share council tax further). I hope that all those who share my concerns about crime will contribute to the consultation on how we spend any new precept monies. Most importantly, we also need to remember the need for prevention: staying alert; reporting suspicious activity; taking sensible precautions. For example, we have made great strides putting more alarms on church roofs following a spree of lead thefts, and speaking to the Co-op I understand they will be looking at what steps can be taken to better secure their stores. Such measures, and more support for our excellent constabulary, should enable us to toughen our response to those who threaten our security.

Wild birds play a huge part in our farming calendar and give both us and our visitors’ pleasure all year round. Feeding wild birds in your own garden is a priority during these colder months and a wonderful way to attract and observe all kinds of different birds at a closer distance. With this in mind, during our latest building project we have moved and smartened up our wild bird food area, increased our range of wild bird feed and included more bird feeders and accessories. You will find a bigger range to attract our wonderful wildlife, including seed feeders to fat balls, meal worms to suet logs together with a great selection of nest boxes. And just in case you are wondering what is going into the area where the bird feed has been moved from we can now let you into our secret that it is soon to become a served Deli counter. Lots more detail to come on that forthcoming change in the spring! Hollow Trees Farm, Semer, Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 6HX 01449 741247. shop@hollowtrees.co.uk www.hollowtrees.co.uk

Hadleigh Bunting I thought it might be of interest to the community to see where the Bunting has been after adorning Hadleigh Streets throughout summer. It continued on it's journey before it got safely stored away in readiness for its next outing. I was part of the team of ladies that met on Sunday mornings at the Hadleigh Leisure Centre to make the Bunting at the beginning of the year. A plea went out from Jane Snowdon asking for volunteers to collect the dirty bunting from her at the Hadleigh Leisure Centre. All 4000 pennants have now been carefully washed, mended and ironed and safely stored away. Chrissie Williams

Music We had a very festive end to our Autumn term with our Key Stage 2 Carol Service in St Mary’s Church. It was a community event where the children really enjoyed performing to a large congregation with readers, actors, singing and instrumental players. The advanced recorder group and the bell ringers also enjoyed being involved in the High School Autumn Term Showcase, a fantastic opportunity for the children involved. Keystage 1 – Years 1 and 2 Year One have been studying the British artist Andy Goldsworthy in their art and woods sessions. He collaborates with nature to make his creations and the children used objects around them in the classroom and outside to make some wonderful sculptures and innovative transient art. Jacob said, 'It was good to copy his drawing on stones.' Toby said, 'I found some wood in the fire and it was charcoal and I used it to draw with.' Year 2 started this term off by focusing on Maths in the movies! The children had a go at limbo, they estimated who would go the lowest first and then measured in (cm) how low they could go! They created potions by mixing and combining coloured water in (ml ) to create a new potion which they then named. This was inspired by snippets from the films Shrek and Shrek 2. Sport During the term, we had a visit from our two School Games Organisers, Ali Furlong and Ben Wallis. Ali and Ben were here on a special visit to present our school with the Gold Kitemark Award in School Sport. This award has been given to only a handful of schools in Suffolk and we could not be more thrilled about receiving it for a third year in a row. Thank you to all the children, staff and especially Mr Peters and Mr Daniels for making this happen. Well done HCPS!

Accident on Wednesday 29th November at the drop off point at Morrisons I want to say a big thank you to everyone who helped and assisted. I was in total shock at the time. The vehicle in question ran over my foot and as I was trapped I lost my balance and fell flat on my back. The vehicle came forward yet again on to my foot instead of reversing. Fortunately, nothing was broken, a miracle no thanks to the driver who then drove off. My foot was badly bruised and swollen and resulted in pain which made it difficult to walk. My back also had severe bruising. A senior member of Morrisons staff took me to first aid and took me to see Dr Irwin at the Health Centre. I believe the Police are dealing with the matter. R. Hadleigh Guildhall Complex - A Brief History 1252: The Lord of the Manor of Toppesfield Hall is granted the rights to hold a market. The market lands appear to be from Churchcroft (i.e. edge of current church yard) to Goosengrouch (now Duke Street) and from the walls of Toppesfield Hall to the Kings High Way. 1417-18: The ‘chieffe inhabitents’, or people running the town, rented from Toppesfield Hall the Market House. And the long hall newly built. (the long hall and almshouses blew down in the 1880’s and were not rebuilt) 1438: The buildings and market rights are transferred to 15 chieffe inhabitants and the Hadleigh Market Feoffment is formed and from then on Trustees were appointed from the town’s ‘leaders’. 1450’s: The Feoffees sold a piece of land to the Guilds and the Guilds halls were built. (they were not joined to the Market House and were longer than the present halls.) 1550’s: The reformation. The Guilds were abolished and their property sold. This only affected the Guilds’ Halls and not the Market House, Long Hall or any other properties. 1570’s:The Feoffees raised the money to purchase the Guilds halls, and possibly at around this time the Guilds’ halls and Market House were joined. 1570’s to 1823: Part of the premises were used as the equivalent of a ‘workhouse’ Hadleigh being one of the earliest towns in the country to provide for its poor. It eventually joined the Semer Union ’work house’ or ’house of Industry’ in 1823. 1850’s: Part of the Guildhalls were demolished and the New Town Hall with a Police Station beneath it was built.
When the Guildhall was closed in the 1980’s the Feoffment as it existed then was almost unknown to most residents. The members appear to have been appointed on the old boy network – there were no women – and most took little interest in the actual running of the building. It was difficult to find out any information and at a public meeting questions regarding the finances were ignored as it was considered that this is confidential The Town Council at the time were very concerned at the loss of facilities to the town and the danger to the historic heritage which they felt that had a duty to maintain. A solution arrived at following consultations with Babergh, The Charity Commission and Solicitors. I attended the meeting at which the Trusteeship of the Charity was transferred to the Town Council. The Council were at the time in the old Gas Offices in Babergh’s Car Park. The accommodation consisted of an office and one narrow room barely wide enough for a table with councillors sitting either side leaving very little room for any members of the public. The Council needed more room and it was agreed and always was the intention that it should rent the Market House part of the Guildhall complex. Renovation of the complex took a number of years and for much of the time the only income from lettings came from the Town council. For it to be proposed thirty years later that the Council should not pay rent is contrary to the wishes of the original agreement. to suggest that the Feoffment should not let out rooms for public use or tourism but that the whole building should be leased to an unknown business or organisation is totally unacceptable.‘ Jane Haylock Jane and I feel it necessary to bring this to residents attention. The Town Council not only pays rent for the part of the property it uses but also supports the building when necessary with some minor repairs. Over the last few years the cost of keeping this building for the town amounts to fifteen pence per week per household, or £7.50 per year per household. The Town Council is the Trustee for the building as ‘registered’ with the Charity Commission and as the Trustee originally put the building back into good repair and manage it for the uses we residents make of it to-day. Why there is an attempt to ‘mend a wheel that has not been broken’ we do not understand except that it will save Hadleigh residents 15 pence a week on their Council Tax. Jane Haylock and Jan Byrne

Throughout its life the various rooms in the building had numerous uses, as a wool hall, all cloth had to be brought to the premises for taxation purposes before being taken to London or abroad for sale, various schools from Grammar School to Free School and housing Cambridge colleges during time of plague. The Income from the Market and shops supported the building as well as providing for the poor, the gaol, school teachers and repairs to the church. Throughout it housed the Chief Inhabitants who were managing the town. The only period in history that I can find when the Town was not run from some part of the Complex is between the 1880’s and 1974 when the then Urban District Council owned and worked from Toppesfield Hall. By the time of the first Charity Commission Schedule in the 1880’s most assets had been sold, the charity retaining the Guildhall Complex, New Town Hall, two shops, a carpenters work shop, the Corn Exchange, The Ram and the Market. By the time of the 1970’s Schedule everything had been sold with the exception of the Guildhall /New Town Hall complex. The Guildroom and Caretakers cottage were let at a peppercorn rent to the Church for use as Parish Rooms. A caretaker for the rest of the building lived in part of the lower floor, (old police station) below the New Town Hall, and the garden was divided into gardens for the caretakers. Other rooms were let out as required for Town Activities, the Freemasons, Conservative Association, HADS, St John Ambulance, Fur and Feather Club and a garage. In the early 1980’s the whole complex was closed as being unsafe for public use, it was an immediate closure and all bookings and lettings were cancelled on the spot. The Trustees tried for a few years to raise money for the refurbishment / rebuild of the premises but were unable to raise the amount required. In late 1987 early 88 the trustees tried to lease the premises to the Town Council for 99 years on a full repairing lease, but themselves maintaining ownership as trustees. The lease was drawn up but never confirmed. In November 1988 The Charity Commission agreed to the Town Council being the sole Trustee (a Council being the sole trustee and not individual councillors meant that the Charity Commissioner does not have to change the schedule every time a new councillor is appointed). The Town Council then took over refurbishment of the buildings, undertaken in a number of phases, and were able to take out Public Works Loans to finance the refit, plus a grant from Babergh and a payment of £30,000 from Babergh to the Town Council on condition that they vacated the Gas Works Cottage in which Babergh had temporarily housed them. The £30,000 had to be put into the refit fund. The Town Council raised and repaid the £400,000 public works loans. (the last loan is still being paid). In 1991 The Town Council moved into the refurbished Market House, and according to Council minutes immediately started paying rent. The Town Council formed a Market Feoffment Management Committee and a Complex Manger was appointed. As the various rooms were refurbished they were then opened again for public use. There are numerous copy letters over the period 1988 to 1992 showing that the Charity Commission knew exactly what was happening, how the building was being used and the occupation of part of the building, the rental payments and the formation of the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Committee. In June 1991 the Official Custodian for Charities sold the shares they held and the monies were transferred to the Charity. Jan Byrne
Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre This seems to be the time of year when all the Travel Agents are bombarding you with holiday brochures, so lets talk about going places! Of course Babs and I have little experience in moving around so all I know is what I hear from my riders and helpers. Firstly, I understand it can be quite hard to travel to the Shelley Centre. When carers are driving my riders over, they frequently lose their way, or, as was the case in January, get the dreaded ‘Road Closed’ signs up at both ends of our lane. All very annoying, and in consequence riders miss a good ten minutes or so off their sessions. This matters when we are here to provide therapy and they lose a great chunk of it. Secondly, many of our helpers seem to disappear at this time of year. They go ‘skiing’ whatever that is, or visiting family in far-flung places. This leaves gaps in the teams of volunteers, which is why we are always looking for more people to come on the Shelley journey with us. Better too many helpers than too few! Thirdly, I have it straight from the horse’s mouth that Riding Therapy has travelled all over the world. There is now a ‘Horses in Education and Therapy International (HETI) Federation’ (wwwhetifederation.org) which supports and encourages countries to use horse therapy for disadvantaged or disabled people worldwide. So if you are on your travels in some outlandish quarter, have a look to see what’s their equivalent of our Riding for the Disabled Association, it might be interesting. The Centre continues to benefit from the generosity of the Masons’ Charitable Foundation. The lovely new fencing is up and running. Alfie is posing in his field to show it off to my readers. The new surface of the back yard is holding up in this most muddy season, the pony girls are pleased as punch to have somewhere dry to rest. We have welcomed some new riders this term and look forward to helping them achieve their goals. I wish all my readers safe journeys and a happy return. We’re always hoping to see you here! Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172

Hadleigh Osteopaths are a team of 3 Osteopaths who have been established in the area for over 25 years. We specialise in the treatment of all joint and muscle conditions, including back pain, sciatica and sports injuries. This time off year brings snow and ice. At these times we see some of our patients who are normally active and walk regularly, who have chosen to stay at home so they do not slip on ice. As a result of their reduced activity they sit around more, and often stiffen up. Another group of patients are those that have gone out in the snow to clear paths and driveways, using shovels and brooms, whilst the young at heart go out to play and toboggan. It's true that boys will be boys, but when the snow arrives, so will a lot of middle aged men! The more active of us may try to get away for a skiing holiday. As equipment has changed and improved over the years we now see a slightly different selection of winter holiday injuries. In the past the majority of skiing injuries were knee ligament sprains and strains, such as cruciate ligament tears or spiral fractures of the tibia, which would often require surgery. As boot and bindings improve we don't see these as frequently, but we often see impact injuries where people have lost control at speed or been in a collision. Last year we saw more shoulder injuries than in previous years, and snowboarders often present with wrist and thumb injuries if they fall onto outstretched hands. Lots of people don't realise that we don't just treat backs. We are happy to treat all sorts of muscle and joint injuries, and able to help with rehabilitation if you have been unfortunate enough to have needed surgery for an injury. To find out if osteopathy can help you, please contact the practice on 01473 828585 for bookings of call 07770 746224 for enquiries or via our website at wwwhadleighosteopaths.co.uk

Way back in the 1500’s, when only boys were ever educated or sent out to work, wealthy traders of the day routinely took on apprentices. This was a way for orphanages or poor families to relieve themselves of the burden of feeding and clothing all their children because, by apprenticing them out to a trade, the new Master effectively took over their welfare whilst training them into the skills of a profession, trade or calling. In the early 1600’s apprenticing became more formal and apprentices became registered with the newly formed (1618) Common Council and had to agree to certain conditions. All apprentices could apply for Freedom of the Borough for a fee and after satisfactory completion of the required seven years apprenticeship period. (**) Hadleigh was at the forefront of poor relief and around this time charitable benefactors set up foundations, trusts and funding for apprentices that would benefit both the poor families and trades of Hadleigh for centuries to come. Our Foundation was one such, and set up by a prominent Hadleigh resident, Arthur Gaell who was a member of the Common Council, “surgeon, druggist & apothecary” and Town Mayor in 1659. Arthur died of the plague in 1666 and in his Will, dated 22 February 1666 and proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in the Strand in London, on 28 November 1666, he left a property in “Soddington Street” (now believed to be no. 8 High Street) the rents from which were to be used as his “endowment to the Churchwardens and Overseers for putting out some poor boy yearly to trade”. The specified area of benefit was Hadleigh. Records were not kept as to where the monies actually went and the property was sold in the mid 1900’s and no longer forms part of the charity, whose funding relies solely on the generosity of benefactors as it has no funds other than a small investment account. Historical records are few and far between (although Hadleigh Town Archives do hold various documents relating to works carried out at the property) and The Arthur Gaell for Apprenticing Foundation was considered one of the Lost Charities of Hadleigh. However, along with other Hadleigh charities established in similar ways at roughly similar times (The Ann Beaumont Charity and the John Alabaster Charity) it survived and continued to assist residents and businesses in Hadleigh. Records are more prolific from the 1960’s and various Chairmen and Clerks continued to uphold the wishes of our founder. In 1964 a letter from the Ministry of Education set out the Objects of the Charity (there is no Trust Deed) so it could be registered with the Register of Charities (now The Charity Commission) on 10 December 1964. Under the umbrella of The Charity Commission, the Activities of the Charity state our work as: “Providing financial assistance for outfits, clothing, tools, instruments or books to beneficiaries on leaving school, a university of other educational establishment to prepare for, or to assist the entry into, a profession, trade or calling.” From 1964 various Chairs, Trustees & Clerks kept the charity running as far as their time and interest allowed. I became a Trustee in 2013 and was asked to take over the Chair in 2017. Having a massive interest in Hadleigh and its history, I researched as much as I could about the community climate at the time of the Will of Arthur Gaell, the modus operandi of similar charities and, with a close eye on the requirements of The Charity Commission and various interested bodies in Hadleigh today, find I have become passionate about taking this little-known but potentially very useful charity forward after its knifeedge survival of almost 400 years. Apprenticeships are coming back into the business world in the twenty-first century and it is accepted that they equip young people with the necessary skills and acumen to perform mutually beneficial roles and give them a good start as they leave the world of education and move into the “real” world. There are Charities in Hadleigh that assist with education and charities that assist at many other levels, but I believe that we are the only one that deals specifically with apprenticeships. We are that bridge between education and employment and that is what we will focus on.

The current Trustees (there are five of us) are all local residents and business people who were either born in Hadleigh or have lived here for over 30 years. We all wish to keep as close as practicably possible to the original wishes of the founder, Arthur Gaell (after whose family, Gaell Crescent was named). Upon publication of his Will in the seventeenth century only boys were educated and only boys were sent out to work. Girls may have been put into service but were largely ignored. Thankfully today, that is not the case. HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? We are happy to invite applications from anyone who has finished their education and is looking for assistance into an employed apprenticeship. We will also consider ongoing in-employment training. You must be resident in the IP7 postcode area. Application forms can be obtained from jessicanevard@btinternet.com or by calling 01473 822671. All applications will be discussed by the Trustees at their quarterly meetings (April, July, October and January) and all applicants will be informed of the Trustees’ decision at the earliest opportunity following the relevant meeting. HOW CAN YOU HELP US? We are a very small charity and are happy to remain so. However, if we are to help apprentices, we also need support. We are not currently looking to undertake any formal fundraising (we simply do not have the time or manpower) but if any business or charitable benefactor in the IP7 postcode would consider offering us any form of funding, we would love to have a conversation with you. Again, please contact jessicanevard@btinternet.com or telephone 01473 822671. The Trustees thank you for your interest so far and hope to talk further with you. Jessica Janas (Chair), Brian Lazenby, Richard Whiting, Richard Finch and Matt Paisley. (**) for lots more very interesting information, please see The Hadleigh Historian issue no 43)

Well I’ve seen it all now. Rupert the pig was a baby when he arrived last summer and quickly settled into a routine. Mum lets him out around 5am (he sleeps in a crate in the office like all well mannered porkers) then deals with her emails, by which time he is demanding his breakfast. Yesterday he was strangely quiet and no wonder. There he was, IN the feed bin, helping himself to MY biscuits with only his loin chops showing! Ollie says I must tell you we have some lovely cats four who came in together when their owner died. Geordie, one of the four, looks just like Ollie to me - but don't tell him I said so! The fundraising events start in March with an Easter Gift and Craft Fair on 10th at Whatfield Village Hall on 10th and a Book Sale on 24th at Hintlesham & Chattisham Community Centre. If you want to make some holiday money and have nice things to sell, phone 01206 263269 to book a table at our Spring Fair on 22nd April at Long Melford. Although Christmas seems long ago, we are still enjoying goodies from the parcels kind people dropped off over the festive season. Mum didn’t get to see all of you and specially asked me to thank you. Which reminds me, that notso-small pig is heading back indoors so it’s time to check there are still some dog biscuits for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Suffolk Bereavement Support Why Not Pluck Up The Courage? If the new year finds you experiencing a delayed reaction to bereavement or perhaps not coping with adjusting to the loss of a loved one then why not pluck up the courage and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? Our groups are very friendly and supportive and we encourage our members to share their experiences as we believe this is the best way to offload pent up feelings that may eventually take their toll on us and affect both mental and physical health. New members are not put under any pressure to join in until they feel ready to but we find that most people feel at home very quickly. At each meeting we focus on an aspect of bereavement by way of a short video clip and a presentation. This is designed to help us understand our responses to grief and to stimulate discussion of the wide spectrum of emotions and reactions that can be experienced. Our members frequently testify to how this has helped them cope as they negotiate the path of bereavement towards the point where they are better equipped to move forward with their lives while still treasuring memories of their loved ones. We have planned our meetings so that there should be a group to suit most people. Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join us at any time. Obituary: It is with great sadness that we report the recent death of Mike Sands. He was already in hospital very unwell from a stroke when he suffered a further stroke and died a few days later on 6th January. Mike joined Hadleigh Rotary Club in 2003 on moving from Yorkshire where he was a member of a Bradford club. Mike was an enthusiastic Rotarian and participated fully in the life of the Club. He served two terms as President - 2006/7 and 2011/12. He also enjoyed playing Father Christmas during the Christmas Collections and was very good at his job.Mike was one of the Club's most regular attenders and joined in all the activities with his last appearance being at the Christmas Party in December just before he fell ill. He will be very much missed and at this difficult time members thoughts are with Kate and the Family. Christmas Collections: A massive THANK YOU Hadleigh for your tremendous generosity this year. The total of £2063.97 was the highest figure for at least 30 years and is probably a record especially as the figure was boosted by a final donation of £50. The record for a one night collection was also broken this year with a figure of £363.39 whilst the addition of a new route taking in the Matilda Groome area boosted takings and, perhaps more importantly, enabled Father Christmas to see many more children. The total House to House collection was £1291.12 whilst two days in Morrisons car park produced £772.85 (an increase of 51% on last year). The float received a warm welcome wherever it went and Father Christmas was kept very busy seeing a large number of children. Of course this event does not just happen and in addition to the Club members its success is down to a small band of friends of Rotary who come out to help every year. A big thank you goes to them: firstly the men in red - Richard Whiting, Brian Strutt and John Robinson, the additional collectors - George Wyatt, Colin Brown, Harry Wilkinson, Simon and Kerrie Carter and Carole Burne. Towing duties were shared by Gary Hambling of Hambling Utility Services and Simon Foster of Crockatt Garage. Hadleigh Bowling Club kindly allowed the float to be kept at the green during the collection period which is so convenient whilst Martin Pratt keeps it safe at his farm for the rest of the year. Many thanks to them also whilst a special thank you is due to George Wyatt, Colin Brown and Richard Westwell for helping with repairs to the float and upgrading the sound and lighting systems. The funds are being distributed amongst the following charities: Suffolk Accident Rescue, Hadleigh Guides, Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee, Porch Project, Arthur Gale Trust Apprenticing Foundation (supporting apprentice schemes in Hadleigh), Elmsett Primary School PTA (improvements to outdoor play area) and Hadleigh British Legion 1st Word War memorial Fund. Club Events: Special General Meeting: this was held at the beginning of December and the following officers were elected for Rotary Year 2018/19 President: Richard Whiting, Vice president and President 2019/20: Linda Humphries, Secretary: Glenn Abbassi, Treasurer: Ian Burne. Champagne Brunch: This was held on the first Saturday in January at The George, Hintlesham and almost every member attended enjoying a fine meal. Many thanks to the Management and staff for looking after us so well. 40th Charter Anniversary Lunch: this is being held on 22 February at The Swan Hotel, Lavenhamand as this is celebrating 40 years of Rotary in Hadleigh the Club is inviting as many Past Members as possible. Invitations have been sent out but in a number of cases we have lost touch so, if you qualify but have not received a letter and would like to attend, please contact David Stokes 01473 827226 by 8th February. It should be a very enjoyable occasion with a chance to reconnect with old friends and bring back memories of happy times past. Membership: If you have read anything in this article which interests you and you wish to find out more about Rotary activities please contact David 01473 827226.

Blue Comet The Sun 5th Rise 07.30 Set 16.51; 15th Rise 07.12 Set, 17.10; 28th Rise 06.45 Set 17.34 Moon New 15th. No Full Moon in February. This only happens 4/5 times per century, the last being in 1999. Mars On the morning of February 11th, Mars will be close to the star Antares in the constellation of Scorpio. This apparent pairing will be visually pleasing in that the star Antares' name literally translates as 'rival of Mars'. Jupiter Is now rising just after midnight and shines at magnitude -2.0 making it unmissable, but it is low over the horizon. Blue Comet! There's been recent media attention applied to a comet (named C/2016 R2 PanSTARRS) that is appearing to observers as a rather unusual blue colour and approaching Earth. These sort of headlines are misleading to the general public and in extreme circumstances can scare people. The comet has already made its closest approach to Earth in early January at a healthy distance of 2 astronomical units or in old money, 186,000,000 miles. That, I think you will agree, is not very close at all! Next we have the strange blue colour. Comets usually appear green in colour due to diatomic carbon being released by the nucleus and interacting with the Solar Wind, or white in colour due to a high level of dust being released by the said nucleus, but to be blue means something else is happening with this comet. It has to do with the process of sublimation of certain elements. Astronomers use the yardstick of 1.5 astronomical units as the 'frost line', this is where water ice sublimates,i.e, it transforms from solid to a gas by bypassing the liquid stage. As already noted, this comet is farther out than 1.5 astronomical units, so the chemical elements responsible for this colour are CO+ and N2 (ionised carbon monoxide and nitrogen). This comet is very unusual in that it is very rich in both these elements and no comet has been seen like this since 1963! So please take the press headlines with a large pinch of salt as the people responsible for the headlines usually have no background within the scientific field. Until next month - clear skies! Down to Earth ...with Dave One of my Christmas presents this year was a new book by my favourite gardening presenter Monty Don. This, coincidentally, is titled 'Down to Earth'. I have only managed to read some of it so far but his philosophy would seem to be very similar to mine. In the introduction to his book he writes ..." Life is short and absurd and run through with pain and sorrow, but even in the face of real suffering gardening can make our days shine with joy. Gardens heal, when you are sad a garden comforts, when you are low a garden consoles, when you are lonely it offers companionship that is true and lasting. When you are tired your garden will sooth and refresh you. You need a bit of luck to be happy, make a garden and increase your chances." His thoughts are very similar to mine, and over the past couple of years I have found a lot of comfort in being able to lose myself in my hours of gardening, mainly on the allotment. And of course there is always the reward of taking home something edible, even at this time of year. Mother nature is truly wonderful, even with all the cold and wet the bulbs are showing their green shoots, with the promise of masses of bright yellow daffodils before long. The tulips planted in their pots are showing through, the garlic planted in December has rooted and is showing good growth. The six foot Christmas tree planted in a pot, now many years old had pride of place as usual by the front door and was adorned with fairy lights. The tree has now split the plastic pot it is in so a new, much larger pot is needed. The old plastic pot will have to be cut off, replanting it will be a two man job. Hopefully it will survive the move and grow some more ready for next Christmas. Another Christmas present I had was a mushroom growing kit. Never tried this before so who knows? In one of my gardening magazines one of the experts said that it was not worth the effort as mushrooms are very cheap to buy. But this surely applies to most home grown veg and is not the point. The small onion sets have, as usual, been planted in their individual pots in the greenhouse, some fifty in total. They do take up a lot of room but when the weather dries up a bit they should be ready to plant out and will get off to a flying start. We are still using the stored crop from last year, I find the red ones don't keep so well so I only grow the golden ones. For some reason they grew extra large last year, the best ever. Keep putting out food and clean water for the birds. We only seem to get the more common birds in the garden but we will still take part in the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch at the end of January. More than half a million people took part last year. That's all for now, Dave

Get ready for the big Spring Clean
Hadleigh & District Garden Club Our last meeting Monday 8th January 2017: On a freezing night we had a very healthy attendance to welcome Hadleigh local Jane Haylock for a talk on medieval gardens. Jane took us from the very first evidence of gardening records to the end of the medieval period in the fifteenth century and it soon became clear that gardeners then recognised and faced many of the garden challenges that we do today. Indeed, with roses, herbs and perennials (such as aquilegia) they used many of the plants that are still so popular now. Jane is pictured proudly showing her quilt of the historic guildhall gardens as they might have looked in medieval times. Our next get together on Monday 12th February 2018: Hoping for a little more warmth in the air we are venturing outside for a winter walk through the fabulous garden behind 'The Place For Plants' nursery in East Bergholt. If you've never been then you are in for a real treat - the garden is full of surprises and, having viewed it in the spring and summmer, I'm looking forward to seeing what it has to offer at this time of year. Owner Sara Eley will be our guide for a tour which commences at 1.30pm.- we will be meeting in the nursery car park and whether you are a garden club member or not we will be happy to see you. Entrance to the garden inclusive of the guided tour is just £7 pay on the day. Andy Leeder, Chairman
Laurie Garnham Laurie's family would like to thank everybody who was able to join them on 11th December 2017 to celebrate Laurie's life. A total of £330.50 has been collected and donated to St Elizabeth Hospice.

Hadleigh Quarry (A1071) The County Council Development and Regulation Committee under the Chairmanship of County Councillor P. Beer and aided by S.C.C Planning Department have granted permission for what will amount to a complete change of use by the current owners and operators of this long established but little used quarry. As the deadline date for this issue was too near for a fuller report, hopefully this will appear in the March edition of Hadleigh Community News. There follows an extract from a letter in the November issue of H.C.N from Mr A Morgan of Hadleigh: “Sadly, the current use of this site was approved some years ago and there is no realistic chance of reversing that approval, including the current levels of truck movements. If this application is approved, and I certainly hope that it isn’t, then it is essential that any approval imposes a maximum number of truck movements per week. The agents use the words “circa” and “around”, but in my view an absolute maximum of 40 movements per week (20 in and 20 out) must be imposed. If approved, this application will, no doubt, result in a substantial increase in overall activity at this location. Originally this decision was going to be a “delegated issue” but I understand that it will now be considered at a full SCC Development & Regulation Committee meeting on 12th December. Let us hope that it will be rejected by our elected representatives who will, no doubt, have read all the objections submitted via the SCC website. Even if this new application is rejected it will, unfortunately , still leave the status-quo and therefore, the current unacceptable pressure on the Aldham Mill Road/A1071 junction will remain”. It should be noted that the junction has had two accidents of recent date, 26th August 2016 – serious and June 2017 – light. On 5th January 2018 there was a very serious accident on the adjoining roundabout with Lady Lane. Fred Breyer
The Long Bessels Light Up The total has been finalised, a massive £1515 has been raised this year which is to be split between Parkside Pre School and Diamond Lites Majorettes. This will benefit both groups immensely, and we would like to thank each and everyone of you who has supported us, whether it a sponsor, backer, donator, helper, visitor etc. Without you this wouldn’t have been possible, your help is greatly appreciated. A special thank you must go to our stalwart helpers, of Trev Clarke who has helped us with the entertainment for the last couple of years, also thank you to Stephanie Green and Mark Snowling for your help too. The time has come for us to scale it down again for a while. This coming year, we intend on going back to how it all started, some lights on the house with a donation box on the gate. The local cause will be named later on in the year, a cause which will be close to many families in some way or another. Now is the time for you, the people of Hadleigh to put our lovely town back on the map for Christmas, and organise a fantastic event in the town. Please do not hesitate to contact Kieron or Alice if this is something you may be interested in, or would like our help in any way. As we close the doors on Christmas and welcome 2018 in, it’s time for us to bow out and say ‘That’s All Folks’ Kieron and Alice
Beaumont Community Primary School Beetles and Spiders Class Trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge KS2 started the new term with an exciting trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Our Beetles Class had a special museum led session learning all about the Romans, while our Spiders Class reflected on last terms History by having a museum led session all about Ancient Greeks. Everybody had an amazing day and we were so proud to hear how all of our children demonstrated Beaumont’s star values. Well done, you are all amazing ambassadors for our school! Better Together runs every Thursday from 9am-11am and is run by the Brett River & Cherry Blossom Children’s Centre. We welcome all families with an under 5 at home, come and see us in the school nursery and lovely garden area for a morning of fun! Hope to see you and your friends there!
Hadleigh Steering Group The Hadleigh Steering Group is open to all members of the community. It is your opportunity to come and meet other local people and put your views forward on some of the matters affecting our town – or just come along to listen. Everyone is welcome. If you were not able to attend the last meeting you missed a really interesting and stimulating presentation by Babergh’s Chief Executive on the proposals for the dissolution and merger of Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils. There were many probing questions from people in the room. We also heard about the Hadleigh British Legion’s plans for many activities to commemorate the Great War. See below for more details. The next meeting is: 4.15pm on Monday 5th February at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. We hope to have a presentation of the plans for the former Babergh Offices in Corks Lane. Meeting 8th January 2018 Notes of Proposals/Actions/Decisions Chair arrangements for 2018 Cllr Grandon will be the Chair for both the January and February meetings. Jan Devey will cover March and Jane Snowden April. Main Agenda Item: Arthur Charvonia, Chief Executive for Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council, gave a presentation on the proposed dissolution of the two District Councils and the creation of a new single council to cover the existing area. Explaining that the background to this discussion has arisen from the serious financial picture faced by the authorities in that, whilst Mid Suffolk has a relatively strong General Fund, which is the fund that covers all general services delivered by the Authority, Baberghs’ General fund is weak and is predicted to be in deficit from next year with an increasing deficit year on year. Babergh however, has a stronger Housing Revenue fund, which is the fund that covers all Council housing and associated housing service costs. Creation of a new Council to replace the two existing would provide a clear benefit to both current authorities, Arthur Charvonia said, as the finances would be combined and would therefore strengthen both, improving the sustainability of all services across the area. The group had the opportunity to ask questions throughout the presentation. – you have until 5th February to have your say on the proposals – go to the Babergh web site. There will now also be a referendum. 2018 Armistice Centenary Events Mark Brennan, Chairman Hadleigh branch Royal British Legion, provided information and asked for support of the events planned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. 2014 was the start of the Hadleigh Centenary project. A Hadleigh WW1 website was set up together with a face book page hosting stories of local men that were killed during the war, published on the anniversary of their death. The 2018 Celebrations will start on the 8th August being the anniversary of Armistice Day and lead up to Remembrance Sunday on the 11th November. The local community is asked to get involved. There will be visits to battlefields and the memorial garden will be part of the Hadleigh Open Gardens event this year. A local company are making a storyboard to go in the garden, which will then become a permanent display, probably in St Mary’s Cemetery where there are nine war graves. There will be a festival of Remembrance on the 10th November and a parade on Remembrance Sunday. 40 houses in the town have been identified where soldiers killed in the WW1 lived. Homeowners will be asked if they wish to display a plaque that commemorates this. Tidy town: If Hadleigh residents are experiencing difficulties with their household waste, for example if they are disabled, they can contact Anita Young through the Town Council and the Tidy Town team will do their best to help. There was a reminder not to leave bags or items outside charity shops if these are closed. Music festival: Still canvassing for ideas, and hoping to link to other events in the town so possibly a preview event at the earlier art exhibition and then a music event at the end of the festival to promote the start of the Armistice celebrations. Visit Hadleigh Website: There are now 22 sponsors for 2018/19 which is really good, although disappointing that none of the pubs, restaurants or coffee shops who are the businesses that benefit most from visitors have sponsored the site. 17th February: A Charity ball is being held at St Mary's Church to raise money for National Deaf Children’s Society, 200 tickets have been sold – contact Stuart Service via Visit Hadleigh Website for details/tickets. 3rd March: There is a wedding and party exhibition and fashion show being held in the Town Hall to showcase those buildings, there are 20 different businesses exhibiting. Main Agenda Item for next meeting: Future of Corks Lane, Hadleigh. DATE OF NEXT MEETING: 5th Feb 2018 at 4:15pm Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Councillor – contact me if you have queries or wish to add an item to the February agenda: kathryn.grandon@babergh.gov.uk

News from The Station Happy New Year readers and residents of Hadleigh. In recent weeks the policing area that we cover from Hadleigh Police Station has been hit quite hard with: 1) Thefts from Motor vehicles, and 2) Burglaries, so in light of this I have some helpful tips for you, together with stickers that can be obtained from the Police Station and/or myself. Commercial Vehicles are being targeted by criminals, there has been a recent increase of vehicle crime in this area involving theft of tools and equipment from unattended vans. Vans are used for all work requirements and as a result transport a range of technical goods, tools and equipment. These items are often valuable and easily sold on by criminals. To avoid property being stolen from your van ensure all valuable items such as tools are removed from the van overnight. Take steps to reduce the chances of your vehicle being targeted. We need to know about any suspicious activity around parked vehicles. Please contact us on the usual numbers at the bottom. Tips on how to protect your vehicle: Park your vehicle in a secure area (in a garage or behind locked gates if possible). If you park it on a driveway, consider installing motion activated lighting and CCTV. If you do not have the above, park it in a well lit, populated area. Where possible empty your vehicle overnight and lock equipment/tools away in secure place. Forensic security marking kits are available to mark your property / UV pens can be obtained from the Police Station. Fit vehicle security equipment within your vehicle. Use high visibility signage to deter thieves by stating that no valuables are stored in the van overnight. Be aware of people acting suspiciously nearby. Please see the images which show the Stickers that are available from The Police Station. With regards to Burglaries – never leave an open invitation, Close it, Lock it, Check it. The most common factors officers find when investigating burglaries are:- Back gardens are accessible (ie back gates not locked, fences not high enough). Items left in gardens used to force entry (ie bricks, garden tools). Lack of security lighting – install dusk to dawn lighting. Lack of lights left on in the house when unoccupied. Keys left in locks. Security mark your valuables with your house number and post code, take photos of valuable items and note serial numbers, register your property FREE on www.immobilise.com to improve your chances of getting it back if lost or stolen. Always lock all doors and windows; Secure your back garden by locking gates with closed shackle padlocks and having 6ft fences; Leave lights and a radio or tv on to make your home look occupied; Do not leave valuable items on display; Avoid keeping valuable jewellery in the master bedroom – hide this in different rooms around your home (and not in the most obvious places); Consider having a burglar alarm and / or CCTV fitted. Whilst these incidents do not occur very often, taking these steps to minimalise the risk of theft and burglary will help reduce these crimes happening within our area. Please feel free to contact me if you would like any further information or indeed leaflets/stickers etc. Until next time, my contact details are : PCSO 3173 Julia Bignell, Hadleigh Police Station, Magdalen Road, Hadleigh. Kersey Mill Newsletter With all the decorations and staging taken down following Santa’s Workshop the Mill is looking bare and quiet! It was a hive of activity with excited children enthralling in Santa’s Workshop throughout December, but now we look forward to pushing ahead with further restoration on the hurst frame, utilising the muchneeded funds raised during December from the Santa events. There are still 2 legs and 2 cross members to install to create a strong frame before we can move onto the installation of the bed stones and surrounding deck. The machinery that is now very visible beneath the Hurst Frame l was made and installed in the early 1800’s. The "Hurst Frame" (the heavy wooden framework supporting the gears and milling stones) was built at the same time but suffered severe decay due to significant water ingress. . The Hurst Frame is particularly interesting in having a horizontal "layshaft" resulting in the three pairs of stones being in a straight line; they are normally arranged around a central circular gear. This is unique and quite rare throughout Britain. There are three pairs of stones at Kersey that are water powered. They are made from French burr stone that is found only in small pieces resulting in each stone being made of several skilfully shaped pieces held together with plaster of Paris and an iron ring heat-shrunk around the outside of the stone. The Stones In due course will be required to be redressed. The iron balance plates and rings will also need repairing, much of which will be retained if possible. All being well and there are no unforeseen problems we hope to have the bed stones relocated and the bed complete before the next major open day. This being on April 22nd which is our popular Drive It Day event. , “Drive it Day” is an opportunity for classic and vintage vehicle owners to commence the season and come to Kersey Mill where you can admire and discuss with other owners the delights of yesterday’s vehicles. We will welcome all spectators where there will be many vehicles, the Mill and other attractions available for visitors to enjoy. Entry for display vehicles is free. Small entry fee for visitor parking.

Letter from Layham www.layham.org
Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of Wednesday 17 January were: • Public Forum - issues raised by parishioners were: Litter: a parishioner who regularly walked from Upper Layham to Hadleigh noted that the amount of litter had increased considerably along the main road from Hook Lane to Pipkin Lodge. She asked whether the PC would consider organising more than one litter pick during the year. Speeding: this remained an on-going concern for many parishioners. The Chairman said the PC was liaising with Suffolk CC to try and obtain an ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) speed device. Planning: the parishioners present all expressed concern about the application for outline planning permission for the erection of a detached dwelling and garage on land adjacent to Stows Cottage, Upper Street, particularly as the site was outside the village envelope. The main concern was flooding, which they said happened at least every other year. Access was another concern, especially as HGVs frequently turned into Water Lane in error and then had to back out onto the main road. In addition, Water Lane was used by pedestrians walking to Lower Layham and there would be an increase in traffic, particularly while building work was taking place. With regard to comments made in the consultants’ planning statement, parishioners said there was no guarantee that local businesses or facilities would benefit from the development. Following the Public Forum, the PC discussed this application. Councillors had expressed concern about the previous application in November 2016; the application had subsequently been refused. After discussion, it was agreed that the issues raised at that time remained of concern, ie flooding, access, speeding and additional traffic. • Babergh District Council report The Chairman commented that the video by the Offshoot Foundation showcasing the Arthur Ransome season on the Shotley Peninsula was excellent; Cllr Ward said Babergh would look at how it might support future initiatives within its Communities Strategy. • Annual Spring Clean It was agreed to hold the Annual Spring Clean on Saturday 24 February, from 10am. The Green Team’s recommendations on activities to be undertaken were agreed: • Litter picking • Tidying up alongside the river in Brett Green • Clearing part of the pavements alongside the road into Hadleigh • Cleaning village assets, eg bus shelter, telephone boxes, benches etc • Tidying up of Brett Green path edges The event would be publicised via the Hadleigh Community News and a community email, plus posters. With regard to the tidying of path edges on Brett Green, a ‘flyer’ would be produced asking for volunteers. Layham Green Team - Village Spring Clean 10am Saturday 24 February 2018 For many years we have recruited a team of volunteers to spend a morning sprucing up the village. This year we would like to extend the scope of the work done and this requires planning in advance. We will be: • Litter picking the main roads as usual; • Cleaning road signs, the bus shelter, seats etc; • Completing clearance of the bank of the river in Brett Green; • Edging public green areas in Brett Green; • Clearing the pavement between Upper Layham and the Hadleigh boundary. If you are prepared to help on that morning it would be great if you can let one of the organisers know so that teams can be set up in advance. Sheila Roberts Tel: 827270 - Doreen Sillett Tel: 822095 You will just as welcome if you turn up on the day – 10am on the Playing Field. We will find you something to do! The Village Hall is hosting
A BIG CURRY MINI QUIZ NIGHT Saturday 24th February 2018 Curries and a mini quiz, licensed bar and a raffle. Advance tickets required £8 per person from David Pratt (01473 827667) Richard Groom (01473 822220) or Richard Cromwell (01473 822082) Everyone welcome. Community lunches The community lunches are a Parish Council initiative run entirely by volunteers on a not for profit basis. The £6 charge covers costs and is such good value due to Steve and Tanith at the Queen’s Head allowing their kitchen and premises to be used free of charge – they even pitch in and help. The lunches are popular and book up very quickly. Why not get a small group together and book NOW – while it is in your mind Village Hall Update We are pleased to have Country Maids from Semer looking after the cleaning for the year, they have been doing a fantastic job. The new hearing loop is up and working, its first use to be the Layham Playgroup Family Chocolate Bingo Night on Saturday 27th January 4-6pm. New renovation plans are under consideration for the summer and there is a questionnaire in the village hall entrance for any users who would like to put forward suggestions. The next village hall meeting is on Wednesday 14th March 2018. Booking for the village Hall only £7 an hour - contact Richard Groom on 822220. Layham Local History Group This photograph was sent to one our residents as a Christmas card. It came from the archive of the Suffolk Horse Society from whom we have permission to re-print the image. It is dated 1953 so, if you are in your 70s or 80s and lived in Layham then, there is just a chance that you will know the two horsemen. They would have worked at Netherbury Hall farm. If you can help, please contact Michael Woods on 823798 or michaelwoods@suffolkonline.net Baby otters rescued There was a little bit of a drama at Layham Mill at the end of December when the frantic squeaking of animals was heard by the mill owner and a neighbour. Two very young otter pups (estimated to be only five weeks old) were found trapped in the pit that houses the mill wheel. There was no sign of a mother with whom pups typically spend the first eighteen months of their lives. An RSPCA Animal Collection Officer came down from Norfolk and retrieved the two tiny animals. First aid in the form of warmth and milk was provided by the family living in the Granary. He pups are now being cared for at the East Winch Wildlife Centre in Norfolk.
Layham Playgroup CIO We were very excited to visit the theatre, as our Christmas treat, to see ‘Wow, said the Owl’. It is one of our playgroup favourite books. The music, puppets, lights and colours of the theatre experience was new for most of the children. We have continued looking at colours within the playgroup environment. As the weather has been getting colder we have been discussing ways to keep warm and how to look after the animals in our playgroup garden. The birds have been visiting to eat the food we have put out for them. We will also be looking at other colder countries and the animals that live there. We have used different media to use in our small world play and craft activities. On Friday 23rd February we are holding our Bingo Night at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12.00 if booked and £15.00 on the door. Tickets include a book of bingo tickets and a meal of jacket potatoes and toppings. We still have some places available if you are interested in seeing Layham Playgroup for yourself and would like to arrange a visit, please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk Ladybird Toddler Group takes place every Wednesday morning during term time, 9.30 – 11.00 am, and is open to all children from birth – five years. We have a range of toys and activities ranging from a quiet baby area to role-play, small world, playdough and crafts.

Dear Sir, Please write to: Kelvin Avis 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF or email: kelvin@keithavis.co.uk
Dear Sir, I feel compelled to write to you and express disgust and concern at what I consider to be the destruction of many many years of tradition in Hadleigh, namely the removal of the pews from St Mary's Church. I have tried to refrain from topics of religious or political conversation but on this occasion feel it necessary to speak of the former.Having grown up in Hadleigh with my late father being a lay reader for Hadleigh St Mary's for over forty years and the author of Hadleigh through the Ages I spent many years as a chorister etc at St Mary's before moving away to attend college.I had heard about the removal of pews but was horrified on a recent visit to find total removal. Surely partial removal would have satisfied the argument for more space.Even the pews from the small and personal South Chapel have gone. What on earth have the Parochial church Council been thinking about. I know we must consider moving forward but to destroy the internal elements of such an ancient and magnificent edifice is nothing short of returning to almost the elements of the Reformation.By their actions those responsible have reduced a magnificent place of worship to not much more than an enlarged village hall with an altar and organ. Major parts of Hadleigh history have been destroyed and I fear will never be replaced.May those responsible for the destruction of such an important piece of church history be held to account. Richard Jones
Dear Sir, It should be a golden rule of life that “just because you can, it doesn’t mean that you should” The push for Babergh to merge with Mid Suffolk is a good case in point. The officers and Mid Suffolk want the merger and Babergh is still sceptical. The rules have been changed to allow merger by decision and quite rightly the elected councillors of Babergh have resolved that the people should be consulted once more by referendum. I could never understand Mid Suffolk’s obsession with the merger. I had suspicions when I was told that a due diligence exercise on Mid Suffolk was not necessary and then later I discovered that the web site contract was expiring and the first item of business for the newly merged IT department was to design a new website. Thus, we did not have the opportunity to prioritise the IT planning or any of the other departments where a merger would deliver concrete results sooner. Since 2015 Babergh Council has seen the ways forward being driven by unelected Council officers and by Mid Suffolk Councillors. I have seen papers which indicate that Babergh’s staff costs in 2015/2016 were £8,082,000 compared to £8,730,000 in 2011/2012. Mid Suffolk Council on the other hand spent £9,876,000 in 2015/2016 compared to £8,277,000 in 2011/2012. So, whilst Babergh controlled their costs and achieved a 7% saving, Mid Suffolk’s rose by 19%. Is this the reason why Mid Suffolk wants to merge – to hide their rising staff costs? By passing on their excesses to Babergh they demonstrate their “prudence” and “ability to manage”, whereas, in fact, they are practising financial engineering with smoke and mirrors. Babergh should be very clear about the gains and implications for both Councils. It is a business maxim that there are no mergers – only takeovers in disguise. The last Leader of Babergh Council declined to recognise that truism. Let’s hope the remaining Councillors realise that no matter how good an idea seems it could always be made better by detailed scrutiny! Brian Riley
A referendum is to be held as to whether to have a full and complete merger between Babergh (BDC) and Mid Suffolk (MS) District Councils. One extremely important factor is charging for car parks which in BDC is free up to 3 hours but in MS starts immediately at a very high rate.Given some BDC members have in the past voted to introduce car parking charges it would be inevitable that charges would be introduced. However, if we ignore the ‘tunnel vision’ of charging and look at the health of our shopping centres we could rightly draw some conclusions. Hadleigh has a population of 10,000 and Stowmarket has a population of 20,000. Yet, Hadleigh town is thriving while Stowmarket, in my view, is staggering. Both have yet to face up to the massive changes likely with internet shopping. On car parking grounds alone there would appear significant reasons for rejecting a full merger. R. A. Smith
Dear Sir, With regard to the letter from NGN Pechy re The Aldham Mill Hill Gravel Pit in which he states that the pit was dormant before 1982. I have lived here all my life and can remember the 60s and 70s when a firm called A. J. Brush who had green coloured tipper lorries hauled gravel from that pit before 1982 and can also recall two tankers called ‘sludge gulpers’ going into that pit. Mr Pechy says he has lived here since 1982, so still a new boy in my reckoning. Many years ago I used to cycle along that road towards Aldham Mill Hill near to the bypass and where it now runs there stood a house, now demolished, where a Mrs Hines once lived. I delivered Layers Mash and Mixed Corn to her in the carriers on my trade bike, wonderful days! Sand and gravel is needed so more homes, which are desperately needed, can be built, move with the times or get left behind. Steve Grimsey
Dear Sir, Thank you, I have been truely overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the local community after a fundraising campaign was set up by Fran and Peter Messenger, supported by the Hadleigh Baptist Church. For the past months funds have been gathered to aid with travel costs to keep me independent using wheelchair accessible taxis. After my highly adapted, drive from wheelchair, Motability vehicle was declared a total loss in June, this was life changing as it was key to my independence, life has been isolated since. I am now waiting up to two years for a replacement vehicle to be ready, as it was so highly specialised. So to say I hugely appreciate this gesture is an understatement, thanks to good people who, through their financial assistance, will make my life a little easier and less stressful in the mean time. Dear Sir, Hadleigh Community Transport provides a Door to Door minibus service for those that are less mobile, frail, elderly or wheelchair users, but we are frequently finding the Drop Off bay at Morrison's is blocked by parked cars with drivers using it as a parking space. We need the length of the lay by to drop off and pick up our passengers, many of whom are elderly or disabled - this is the only safe place we can pull in off the main access road away from cars and pedestrians, deploy the steps or tail lift and assist our passengers off and on the vehicle. The Drop off bay is exactly that and can be used by anyone for that purpose - please allow us and other genuine users that opportunity and use a parking space for shopping Hadleigh Community Transport Group

I'm glad to say that Hadleigh Town Council agreed to hold meetings in a more accessible location. The Town Clerk will investigate and report back at the Council meeting in February with a view to moving the meetings from March onward. The Town Clerk is also investigating a loop system, microphone and speakers for Town Council and committee meetings. This will all make the Town Council more accessible to residents with challenging circumstances. Bill Wilson
Carols under the tree Pete, Mo and Peter would like to thank family, friends and neighbours who supported the Gallows Hill ‘tree’ carols with part of The Ipswich Hospital Band. A good time was had by all. In total the Ipswich Hospital Band and associates raised an amazing sum of £5,846.30 of which we/you raised £192.80 towards this total. This will be shared equally between The East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Ipswich hospital band (both registered charities). Looking forward to doing it all again later in the year!
District Councillor Report Dr Siân Dawson Introduction - It would be an understatement to say that a lot of things have gone on in Babergh since my last report. Perhaps the most high profile issue was a Motion raised by Opposition members. I was the only Hadleigh Councillor along with 7 other Conservative Council members who demanded a second referendum before taking any decision/recommendation on the merger of Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils. I am elected by you and felt Hadleigh residents must have the right to vote at a Referendum for or against as it is such a critical and fundamental decision. This was heard at a full Babergh Council Meeting on 19th December when the Leader of the Council (Jennie Jenkins) resigned minutes before a motion was debated to remove her as Leader of Babergh DC. Had it gone to the vote, she would have been removed by a combined vote of Opposition and disenchanted Conservative Members. Legal arguments were deployed to prevent the election of a new leader that night and an Extraordinary Council Meeting was convened for 4th January 18 to elect a new Leader. Members such as myself who voted for the Referendum are now firmly relegated to the back benches now…But with the Opposition, the small band of Conservatives won the RIGHT FOR A REFERENDUM ON MERGER for the electorate. Public Access - I need to correct a previous incorrect statement concerning the new drop in locations for the electorate post closure of Corks Lane. I was led to believe that people who required face to face contact with Officers in Babergh had the option of going to Sudbury or Endeavour House in Ipswich. This is not the case as the facility has not been provided in Endeavour House. I do not believe that this is an acceptable solution to the less IT literate (mainly older) members of the electorate but I will track the levels of concern that become evident and respond accordingly. Boundary Commission - The Boundary Commission for restructuring the current Babergh Ward pattern will produce its final recommendations on 6th February 18 when the implications will then be debated AT Full Council. As I understand it, the Boundary Commission’s recommendations will be agreed by the Secretary of State for implementation at the next local elections in May 2019. I fully expect the number of District Councillors to come down from 43 to 32 and reduced from 4 to 3 in Hadleigh. Public Sector Housing - Following the completion of 12 additional public sector properties in Lavenham in 2017, 15 additional houses are due to be occupied in Glemsford in 2018 with a further 20 flats becoming available in Hadleigh shortly following the refurbishment of Angel Court, although I feel I progress has been slow on this project and not acceptable. I have chased and requested a response for February. Babergh also continues to buy suitable properties on the open market to increase the supply of Council owned houses. All in all, this is a good news story. Private Sector Housing - My legacy for Hadleigh, the McCarthy Stone retirement development in for 35 one/two bedroom flats and 28 two/three bedroom chalet bungalows has commenced and should take 18 months to complete. McCarthy Stone expect to start selling off plan in February 2019. This is a development that has the potential to allow older house owners (55 minimum age limit for the development) to sell larger houses and move to more suitable accommodation closer to town and impact on our local business. Merger of Babergh & MSDCs - Thank you again for letting me have your feedback on the merger option. Like you, I have reservations that need to be addressed before we move forward. I am pleased to say that we have been successful in that another referendum has been promised to ascertain the level of public support for merger. I acknowledge that much has changed in the 6 years since we last asked the people of Babergh to give their views. This will be explained in a business plan that is now being drawn up by the Chief Executive and his staff. The process will now be a referendum (which I would expect/hope to be completed before the middle of the year). If this votes in favour of merger, the decision must be agreed by a majority of Babergh Councillors before it can be submitted to the Secretary of State as a recommendation. Only he can take the final decision and I would not now expect this to happen before 2020 Disposal of Corks Lane Buildings - Councillors will be briefed on the disposal recommendation for the Corks Lane facility on Friday 19th January 2018 and I will update in due course. Cllr Dr Siân Dawson, 15th January, 2018

The 1st Suffolks and the Corder Brothers In this article we remember: Ernest Edward Corder 12 February 1918 Before the outbreak of war the British Army was a relatively small professional force made up of regional battalions. It was the job of these battalions to secure the British Empire and its lines of communication in places like India, Malta and the East Indies. Occasionally they also had to be ready for conflict such as with the Second South African (Boer) War in 1900/01. Many young Hadleigh men enlisted into the Army for employment and for adventure and since the Suffolk Regiment with their barracks at Bury St Edmunds was the closest battalion to home, many Hadleigh men saw service with the Suffolks. In August 1914 the 1st Suffolks were on garrison duty in Khartoum, Sudan, in north east Africa and were quickly ordered home arriving in October. They were reinforced from the 3rd Suffolk Reserve battalion to a strength of almost one thousand men. In January 1915 they arrived in France to defend the newly established Western Front. They experienced the gas attacks during the Second Battle Ypres in Belgium in April and fought at the Battle of Loos in northern France during September. In October 1915 they were ordered to the Salonika Front as part of the Macedonian Campaign around the Greek town of Salonika and here they remained until the end of the war. It was these back waters of the world conflict that in January 1918 the Chief of the Imperial General Staff, General Sir William Robinson, was recommending disengagement, as in his view this was a campaign that was going nowhere. This was a view that was over ridden by the War Cabinet and Prime Minister Lloyd George. General Robinson did have a point because for the men of the 1st Suffolks, the use of rifle and Lewis gun had turned to sport and it was the wild life of the Greek landscape that became the causalities; woodcock, teal, snipe and plenty of ducks and geese among them. It was a campaign where for the men the killers were sickness and disease rather than conflict. A number of Hadleigh men served much of their war time service in the
Royal British Legion
comparative quiet, albeit harsh environment of the Macedonian Front. Those Hadleigh men known to be at Salonika with the 1st Suffolks in January 1918 included Private William Levi Chapman who worked in cocoa mat factory in Duke Street before enlisting in 1914, he had a wife and children living at 1 Calais Street. He had several spells of malarial fever and on one occasion being transferred to the Floriana Military Hospital in Malta. He survived the war and moved to Ipswich on his return and died in 1962. Private Albert Seager from Benton Street was born 1891 and enlisted in 1910 with the 2nd Suffolks, he was at Aldershot in 1911 and went to the Ypres Salient in January 1915 with the 1st Suffolks and then onward to Salonika. He returned to Hadleigh and married after the war, living at 78 Benton Street. He died in 1965. Also at Salonika was Private Ernest Edward Corder he was born in 1887 and lived on George Street. Before enlisting he was employed as a mat weaver. In 1913 he married Albert Seager’s sister Rose and they had a daughter called Violet. Ernest was the only Hadleigh man who did not return from the Macedonian Campaign, he was taken ill and evacuated across the Adriatic Sea to a base hospital in Taranto, Italy where he died of pneumonia. He was buried in the Taranto Town Cemetery and is remembered on the Hadleigh War Memorial. Ernest Corder was from a family of five boys and four girls; all the boys served in the military. The eldest was Harry Albert he was born in 1878 and enlisted in 1896/97 and served in the Boer War. He died of disease in South Africa in 1901 and as far as is known he is the only Hadleigh man to die in that conflict. He is remembered on the Suffolk Regiment memorial in the market square at Bury St Edmunds. The second brother was Charles William Corder born in 1880 he joined the Royal Navy in 1895, served throughout the war and afterwards lived in north west London and died at Barnet in 1954. The third brother William Turner Corder, was a Sergeant in the Suffolk Regiment and after the war settled in Colchester and died there in 1977. The youngest brother was Frank Stanley Corder, born in 1896, he served in the Royal Engineers and after the war settled back in Hadleigh as a harness maker, living at 88 Angel Street and died in 1982. GREAT WAR NEWS FEBRUARY 1918 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)
Wed 6 Feb. An old Hadleigh boy serving with the Canadian Force writes: “The enemy has, at times called the Canadians hard names, but it is ‘Dear Tommy now.’ Some German soldiers in Lens fired this message into the line by use of an aerial dart. ‘Dear Tommy, the German tommy sends you hearty greeting from Lens. When will there be peace? Please reply.’ that the rank and file of the enemy troops have a great longing for peace is confirmed in every prisoner captured. At all events we hope to hold our position until the Americans are ready to come in.”

Hadleigh Healing Society The news is still being dominated by the “Brexit” talks and the tweets from President Trump which makes us all ponder on what is else is going on in the world that would perhaps put a smile on our faces. “Good” news at times seems to be very scarce especially in the gloom of the winter months. Unbelievably the daylight hours are increasing and Spring is not that far away. For some the gloom of winter increases their feeling of isolation. Hadleigh Walkers February’s walk will be on Saturday 10th. Once again, we have chosen a Hadleigh circular walk. We will leave St Mary’s School at 0930 and then progress down Tinkers Lane, Hill Farm, Rands Farm, Doles Farm, Millwood Cottage,Wyncoll’s Farm, Cobblers Corner, Water House Farm, Layham Mill, Railway Walk and back into Hadleigh. The walk is a pleasant 8 miles through interesting and varied countryside. We should be back around 12.30 pm. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Some of you may wonder what we do with your walk subs after the website costs are covered. I am pleased to report that before Christmas our walking group donated £100 to the Christmas Present Trust to help them fund the Christmas dinner for Hadleigh residents. The money has been used to purchase kitchen utensils and hence will be available for use by other groups in the town. Division 2 of the Ipswich League has a successful leader in Hadleigh “A” who are comfortably clear of their nearest challengers with 11 matches won so far and only one lost. The defeat occurred at home to Wherstead Comets by 7 games to 3 with Daniel Young winning two sets and Peter Wright one. It was quickly put behind them with an 8-2 away win against Rosary Yellow with both Mike Emmerson and Steve Holland scoring maximum wins. Further good form with eight games to play will see the Team promoted back to Division 1, although Peter Wright will probably miss the remainder of this season with a knee problem. Hadleigh “Owls” currently lie 7th in Division 3 and unfortunately Krystoff Kopec, their top scorer with 16 wins from 18 sets has returned back to his native country, Poland. Alan Middleton also remains sidelined. However, the “Owls” have recruited two new players, David Rickett and Dean Abbott with Dean winning one of his singles and just losing another in the 7-3 defeat to the experienced top of the table team, Rosary Green. Once the new players have settled in a move of two places up the Division looks a possibility. If anyone in the area is interested in trying their hand at League play please contact he Club’s Secretary, Ken Rodwell on 01473 823285 for further details.

Hadleigh RFC with Pat Cilliers at Welford Road Young players from Hadleigh Rugby Club rcently honed their skills with the professionals at 10-time English champions Leicester Tigers. The group from Suffolk took part in a Tigers Matchday Coaching Clinic and then joined a 20,000-strong crowd for the Aviva Premiership fixture against London Irish at Welford Road. Tigers Matchday Coaching Clinics allow teams to work with Tigers coaches to develop their individual and team skills, as well as taking tips and techniques with them to work on in the rest of the season. The Hadleigh players also had an opportunity to quiz Tigers forward Will Evans about life in professional rugby and then they soaked up the matchday atmosphere at Welford Road and watched the professionals in action. They even managed to follow in the players' footsteps by having a team photo taken on the famous turf at half-time in front of the crowd. Craig Spooner, a coach at Hadleigh, accompanied the team for their photo alongside Tigers prop Pat Cilliers and said: “We’ve had a fantastic day at Leicester Tigers and the day was organised really well from the start. “The lads loved coming down to Welford Road to soak up the atmosphere so everyone’s had a great time.”

Suffolk Rockets Netball Club We started our New Year quickly with training back on from 3rd January! 2018 has seen some new Back to Netball ladies join us, we are always looking for new players to join, please do get in touch if you fancy trying out our sessions. The club is busy booking friendly games and tournaments for 2018 so the B2N ladies can put their training into practice. Our Juniors were back playing in the Colchester League from 11th January and it was a great start with Cosmic Rockets winning their first game back 63 against Colne, and Saturn Rockets having a tight game against Kelvedon (top of the league) and narrowly missing out on the win by 1 goal finishing 1213 to Kelvedon. Coaching Opportunity - We are looking to recruit a qualified level 1 or level 2 Netball Coach, or a qualified Sports Coach, this is a paid role. As a Suffolk Rockets Coach you will be expected to train the Juniors alongside the Head Coach, and support when needed with the Back to Netball/Ladies Training. Training is Wednesdays 6.30pm - 9pm. Also you will be given the option to support the Junior Teams in their league matches on Thursdays 7pm - 8pm and tournaments throughout the season. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to work alongside and learn from an experienced Academy Coach and to have support to continue their professional development. For more information please contact the club. Are You Interested In Becoming A Netball Coach? Suffolk Rockets is looking to support 2 individuals to become Netball Coaches. The club would support you financially to complete your qualifications, in return you would be expected to volunteer during your training to become a coach at the Junior Training and when needed the B2N/Ladies Training sessions. Please contact the club for more details. suffolkrocketsnc@hotmail.com. FB/Twitter Suffolk Rockets NC
Stoke by Nayland Ladies Eleven of the Stoke by Nayland Ladies went out to play 9 holes on Thursday 4th January the first Ladies match in 2018! Unfortunately it was another wet day, which made the playing conditions fairly unpleasant, although some ladies returned some encouraging results. After the match many past and present members came up to the club for a social afternoon. We had refreshments followed by an inspiring fitness talk from the leisure club, many ladies took the Club president Lesley Garnett with opportunity to sign up for pre Lily May Humphreys and season private training sessions Ladies Captain Elaine Davidson especially designed for golfers fitness. We also had a visit from our junior member 15 year old Lily May Humphreys. We took the opportunity to congratulate her on her recent successes. Lily May joined us on the 4th January following her terrific win in America. She is the first English winner of the Jnr Orange Bowl International held at Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Miami, in December - winning by 9 shots!
Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex Preparations for the new cricket season are already underway. Winter training sessions are being held at Hadleigh High School Sports Hall on 30th January, 27th February and 13th March, 7-8pm with a cost of £5 per session. The sessions will include a warm-up, drills and match scenarios. Net sessions will also take place at Ipswich School in the Gallery on the following Thursday evenings in March: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. These sessions are open to anyone, male or female, who is looking to play senior cricket for Hadleigh CC this year. New players are always welcome – particularly for the Men’s teams. Saturday cricketers were certainly at a premium last season and the club are keen for a larger pool of players for their Two Counties league teams. If you are new to the area or looking to start playing cricket again, please contact Club Secretary Gary Wiles on (gdwiles@btinternet.com /07503 966452) and/or come along to one of the sessions above.
Newton Seniors continue with Team Initiative An experiment in holding monthly team events has been a success and will become a regular part of play for the seniors at Newton Green Golf Club. The annual meeting of the group heard of the intention to make the events on-going feature of Tuesday morning rolls ups. Retiring captain John Ford said well in excess of £1,000 had been raised for the Jude Brady Foundation, and incoming captain Harry Wordley said supporting the joint cause picked by all captains in the club would again be followed. This year support would go to Hope for Harry Wordley Tomorrow, a national charity which provides new seniors’ captain mobile chemotherapy units, including at Sudbury Health Centre. Wordley has already twice been the main men’s captain at the club, and his vice-captain will be Nigel Gerrans. It was agreed to replace the senior open day on May 10 with a guest day.

Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club In December we hosted our fourth annual club competition and over 160 gymnasts took part. It was wonderful to see the children performing to their best in front of their families and friends. We were extremely proud of everyone who took part, but would like to congratulate the following children who won their level and age group competitions: Ava Denny, Josie Smith, Kalia Spalding, Matilda Penrice, Phoebe Wells, Lily Steel, Rosie Docherty, Isla Youngs, Annabel Pomphrett, Darcy Emsden and Emily Evans. A special well done must go to Emily for retaining her overall club champion title. We had some amazing raffle prizes this year and are very grateful to local businesses for their generosity. The money raised on the day helped us to purchase new equipment and the fitness ring has been a big hit with the children and the coaches. We offer classes for children aged 3+ on Thursday evenings at East Bergholt High School and Friday evenings and Saturday mornings at Hadleigh High School. For more information about Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club please look on our website www.hadleighstarsgymnastics.co.uk or contact Kelly Mires on 07760 314060.

Hadleigh Swimming Club News Hadleigh Swimming Club have seen off the old year and welcomed 2018 in style. November saw our annual Club Championships which saw large numbers of our members enter this year. Club and Championship records were broken and a great time was had by all. This year, part of our event was sponsored by Celestion Kef whose generosity has helped provide the medals which will be presented at our celebration evening later in February. With the Club Champs over, the fight was then on to secure qualifying times for the Suffolk County Championships. We have been delighted that this year, twelve of our swimmers have achieved challenging qualifying times (some have gained times in more than one event) and will compete at this prestigious meet. Congratulations to all and good luck. Swimming is great exercise and complements other forms of sport brilliantly because it raises the heart rate and conditions the whole body. It develops strength, flexibility and co-ordination and is lower impact than many forms of exercise. We currently have spaces in our teaching groups and welcome new members for an immediate start. Please enquire at info@hadleighswimmingclub.co.uk

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh United continue their season in a lowly position in the league table. Reports suggest that four teams will be relegated at the end of the season and at the time of writing we were in the final relegation position. So we have plenty to play for in the next couple of months. In recent weeks Great Yarmouth won by a single goal by two goals to one at the Millfield with Dale Munson on target with our solitary goal. On Boxing Day we gained at one apiece at Long Melford as we conceded a very late goal from a penalty kick. Games against Newmarket and Histon resulted in defeats for Hadleigh against teams near the top of the league table. The Reserves suffered a heavy defeat at Wivenhoe by six goals to one with Lloyd Dodsworth on target with our goal. A match at Woodbridge in the league was lost by two goals to one while a cup match against Stowmarket was also lost by a narrow margin in the reserves competition. Our Veterans team beat Coplestonians in an entertaining league game. Next on the list for the Veterans was a cup game which we won by two goals against Diss. Prize winners in the monthly draw were Peter Vardon and Donna Ramsey. Ground Improvement winner was Chris Towell. Terry Adams Hadleigh United Fixtures Hadleigh United fixtures for February begin on Saturday 3rd at home to Stanway followed on the following Saturday 10th at Kirkley and Pakefield. On Saturday 17th Gorleston come to the Millfield followed by a match at Haverhill Rovers on Friday 23rd. Saffron Walden pay us a visit on Tuesday 27th to end a busy month. The Reserves travel to Halstead on Saturday 3rd while Halstead travel to the Millfield the following Saturday 10th. Woodbridge Reserves pay us a visit on Saturday 24th. The Youth team go to Woodbridge on Thursday 1st before Ipswich wanderers come to the Millfield on Wednesday 7th. We entertain Whitton on Wednesday 14th before the return match in Ipswich on Thursday 22nd end our youth games for February. The Veterans end their month at home to Suffolk Police on Sunday 25th.
RETAIL MOTOR INDUSTRY FEDERATION
Hadleigh United Under-11s A frustrating month for the players and coaching team, which ended on a happy note. Deep frosts caused a few away games to be called off, frequently a bit late in the day for some of our parents who had dutifully set off to various parts of the compass. Then we started to pick up injuries only to face a couple of home games against very determined opposition and although our boys played with a true sense of team spirit, including many playing out of position, we clocked up two defeats. Yet, once again, the team showed that real Hadleigh fighting spirit, analysed what could be improved, trained very hard on specific techniques and duly comprehensively overcame Stowmarket Salvation Army after a particularly inspired first half. By the time you read this, we will have played Woodbridge in the quarter final of the cup and I hope to be able to report back on a Hadleigh win! Neil Williams (Coach)

Hadleigh Hares - Suffolk Cross Country Championships 2018 Congratulations to all the Hadleigh Hares runners who competed at the Suffolk Championships held at Culford School. Our female ‘A’ team comprising of Davina Greenwell, Elisa Bostock and Rachel Bodsworth had an excellent day and finished in 3rd position out of 22 teams. Our male team finished 5th out of 19 teams. Caitlin Fosker had a great run to finish 4th in the under 17 category and there were County medals awarded to Maria Ward (3rd V45) and John Scaife (1st V40). Our junior boys ran well in the U11 category including Luke Hyde (6th), Taylor Clarke (7th) & Billy Oxford (16th). We would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Hadleigh Physiotherapy who have supported the Hares and have very generously given us an inflatable Spider Dome for us to use at all sorts of events. It was really useful for the freezing cold day in Culford. Hadleigh Bowling Club Well, we were treated to dwile flonking in early January but more of that later. Meantime the bowling rolls on indoors with 14 teams trying to fit in all their matches to complete the pairs competition before mid-March. You’ll guess that bowling isn’t the real skill needed here. The real trick for each match is to get four busy people in the room at the same time. The word nightmare comes to mind. After that the games are the easy bit. Meantime the Valentines dinner with its live band is all booked and ready to rock on 10th February. Ah yes, even diehard bowlers can dream of romance. Or am I being a bit naive and all they’re after is another meal out and some music? And the flonking thing? It’s the young farmers you see. They took over the clubhouse one evening for a talk on the odder history of Suffolk. Many of you will know that Maharajah Duleep Singh, the ruler of the Sikh Empire and the owner of the famous Koh-i-noor diamond was exiled to England in 1849 and bought the Elveden estate where he rebuilt the house in Italian and Murgal style. But fewer will have heard of dwile flonking which involves dressing up, alcohol, dancing, and wet dish rags but any more information would be far too much for the more sensitive readers. Even one or two young farmers looked a little queasy. But if you want to give bowls a try, ring Jan Austin on 01473 828212
