Babergh Chairman shows appreciation to The Blossom Appeal Babergh District Council’s new chairman Cllr Kathryn Grandon is saying ‘thank you’ to a Suffolk-based breast care appeal by supporting them during her year in office. Cllr Grandon was elected chairman at the Babergh District Council meeting on Wednesday 23 May and succeeds former chairman Cllr Adrian Osborne. Each Babergh District Council Chairman is given the opportunity to select a charity to support during their term. Cllr Grandon has chosen to help to raise funds and awareness for Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity ‘The Blossom Appeal’ - supporting the creation of a new breast care centre at Ipswich Hospital. Cllr Grandon said: “I have chosen The Blossom Appeal, in part to say thank you for the amazing work that the NHS do but also to raise awareness of the incredible service the breast team offer to families across the county. “I have first-hand experience of the fantastic care, kindness and expertise offered. They have been and are a real source of support, not just to the women and men facing breast cancer but their loved ones too. “Cancer affects the whole family in some way, and it really is something that is important to talk about. There are so many different aspects in dealing with and fighting breast cancer and this appeal will support women and men across the district and county by bringing all these different elements of breast care under one roof. I want to use this year to keep the conversation going, raise awareness of The Blossom Appeal and help raise some much-needed funds. ...continued on page 5.

Plan for the future, protect your interests and preserve your wealth Property Life Interest Trust Wills can be of particular benefit to couples considering planning for future care and preservation of assets. Specialist advice on Property Life Interest Trust Wills can provide for both protecting the financial position and living arrangements of the surviving spouse, as well as protecting assets for future generations. For couples with children from a previous relationship, Property Life Interest Trust Wills can also prove an effective legal solution. Taking advice and making early decisions to plan effectively It is often the case that a couple’s main asset is their family home and many are conscious of this when considering planning their estate and inheritance for their loved ones. However, many couples can limit their ability to effectively plan and preserve their estate, or limit their available options for this, if planning their estate is left too late. This is certainly the case in respect of how their home will be treated upon death. The earlier advice is sought, the better in this regard. How your property is owned is important Property can be held jointly in one of two ways. Property held as “Joint Tenants” will pass automatically to the surviving owner under survivorship rules whereas, property held as “Tenants in Common” will pass under the terms of a Will. For couples to effectively plan their estate, it is often necessary for their main residence to be owned as Tenants in Common, providing each with a % share ownership which can be directed into a Trust upon death. What is a Property Life Interest Trust Will and what does it do? A solicitor is able to re-organise a couple's ownership of a property alongside preparing a Will for you, so as to ring fence each individual's property share in a Trust for future generations and identified beneficiaries. The surviving spouse/partner is protected by having a lifetime right of residence in the property and can be one of the trustees (managers) of the Trust. Therefore, the gift of your respective share in your principal residence at death is made to your trustees on trust and is subject to the surviving spouse/partner's right to live in the property for their lifetime. The Trust can be flexible in that the surviving spouse/partner will be able to move to another property using all or part of the value of the property. Any surplus capital not used in the purchase of a new property can be invested and the income can be paid to the surviving spouse/partner for their lifetime. The surviving spouse or partner can decide to make gifts to the family if they do not need the surplus capital or income. Property Life Interest Trust Wills are very flexible, with the surviving spouse/partner even able to rent out the property and receive the rental income. These types of Wills and arrangements can often be recommended where couples (married or unmarried) wish to plan for future care and preservation of assets for future generations and/or provide for children from a previous relationship, whilst at the same time providing security and piece of mind to the surviving spouse/partner. The Hadleigh Archive Hadleigh’s History on your Doorstep

Standing outside Barclays Bank in the High Street and opposite the Market Place, are a group of prominent Hadleigh citizens. The purpose of this gathering during the 1920’s is not known, but included are: at the left Alfred Newman, Solicitor, and Mr. Taylor, Ironmonger of the High Street, now Partridges, and is the tall gentleman with the hat on standing at the back of the group. Dean F. E. Carter is recognisable in the centre with his clerical collar. Also shown is another solicitor, Harold Grimwade and Mr. J. H. Cook whose large Emporium was located immediately to the right hand-side of the bank, and now the High Street car-park. The fine ironwork railings to the bank frontage were removed for salvage during the Second World War. Some of the bases for the railings can still be seen with their lead plugs in-situ. Picture reference: TS-BI. The Hadleigh Archive is administered by the Hadleigh Town Council. The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh, IP7 5DN. A team of experienced volunteers look after the Hadleigh Archive and meet on a regular basis to catalogue and transcribe its large number of documents and images. Latest update from the Neighbourhood Plan sub-committee Members of the sub-committee and interested community volunteers have been undertaking character assessments of Hadleigh throughout May and June. A character assessment is a document that describes the distinct appearance and feel of a settlement or an area. It communicates the key physical features and characteristics that combine to give a snapshot of the local distinctiveness and unique identity. This document will create a base for policies to reference and developers to take head of. The character assessments will be collated into a single document during July, to be included as a supplementary document to the Plan. Working with Navigus consultants, the sub-committee have agreed a list of objectives for the draft plan and a draft vision. The objectives are likely to stay relatively set from here on but the vision is likely to be adapted and redrafted throughout the rest of the process. Please let us know if you support these and any other views via this feedback form: https://forms.gle/i3qXb6Dh3kvCmP8Y7

Babergh Chairman shows appreciation to The Blossom Appeal The breast care team at Ipswich Hospital support so many families and I want to help them get the funds they need ‘so our local community has a state-ofthe-art breast care centre, particularly during these very difficult times.” Sandra Gosney, Community Fundraising Manager for Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity said: “We are delighted our Blossom Appeal has been selected this year as the Charity of the Year. We rely on voluntary donations for our income, and this will really help us to make a difference. The new dedicated £6.2 million Breast Care Centre at Ipswich Hospital will bring together all elements of breast care under one roof – the breast clinic, the imaging department and breast screening – for the first time. Our thanks to Cllr Grandon for choosing us and helping us to provide our patients with the environment to match the exceptionally high standards of care they already receive.” Anyone who would like to support Cllr Grandon’s appeal can donate via her dedicated JustGiving fundraising page - BDC Chair's fundraising for the Blossom Appeal

The People’s Project The shortlisting panel met on Tuesday 7th June and the following ideas scored the highest out of the 8 submitted that were eligible. Please take a moment to read through them and vote for your favourite via our online form https://forms.gle/VKYsdScGDbfxmRos7 or use the QR code below. Voting will be open until 31st July. Hadleigh Art Trail - Individuals, Hadleigh groups and schools would be invited to display their art in any form for a period of time to be determined. A listing would be produced and each piece of art would have a description of their meaning or representation. Everybody in Hadleigh or visiting Hadleigh would then have the opportunity to enjoy viewing the artwork displayed and seeing Hadleigh showcasing its talent. There would also be an occasion for a day event which would host other forms of arts as well. Potentially there could even be the chance to have a winning art piece chosen by The Mayor! When it could happen: Location/s to be determined, this event could take place this year Beatz Fest - An inclusive day festival with a variety of activities, though largely centred on appealing to young people and families, the activities could include music-making workshops including beatboxing and other talents, live bands, bmx displays, comedy roast show, clothing stalls and other cultural happenings to help connect young people with the wider community and inspire them through displays and interactive performance. When it could happen: Most likely Summer 2023 What’s About, Hadleigh? - Ever wondered what’s there to do around here? This event would showcase Hadleigh and all it has to offer the community, visitors and young people. There are an abundance of groups and activities in Hadleigh and we’d be showcasing as many as possible in an exhibition event with demonstrations where appropriate. As this event would be low cost it would also be possible to hold it more than once to allow for as many people as possible to experience the joys that Hadleigh has to offer. When it could happen: Summer and Winter 2022, potentially also in Spring 2023. If you are unable to vote online, please email projects@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk with your order of preference of the above ideas or write it down and deliver it to Hadleigh Town Council at The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh, IP7 5DN.

What makes paella so popular?

HUNT HOME FINANCE LTD

As Britain’s most popular foreign holiday destination, with more than 18 million British visitors to Spain, in pre-pandemic 2019, it is not surprising that typical Spanish dishes are among our favourites – none more so than paella. The dish is actually named after the wide, shallow pan in which it is cooked, traditionally over an open fire: the paellera or paella, the word for a frying pan in Valencia's regional language. Paella was synonymous with the Valencia region, one of the most important rice-producing areas in Spain, but it has become one of Spain’s bestknown dishes. Originally a farmers’ and farm labourers’ food, it was cooked by the workers at their lunchtimes and eaten straight from the pan using a wooden spoon. We tend to think of paella as a “fish dish”, not surprising, perhaps as most British visitors to Spain head for the Mediterranean coastal resorts many of which are fishing villages. Valencia itself was always a major fishing port and just a short distance from the city are the Albufera Wetlands, a freshwater lagoon and an ecologically important rice-producing area. Most of Sibarita’s rice is from the Albufera Natural Park. Rice would have been the basic ingredient of the original Valencian farm workers’ paella, together with Garrofon white beans. They are large beans with thin skin and a mild, creamy flavour. Other ingredients were whatever was available on the day, meat generally being chicken or rabbit, also anything left over from the previous day. This is how paella came to have so many variations. Whether your favourite is seafood, meat or even vegetarian you can prepare this dish to your own taste. Sibarita’s supplier of paella products, seasonings and spices is Jesús Navarro SA founded a hundred years ago. Their Carmencita brand is known throughout the world. They were probably the first to create and market a blend of spices with an authentic paella taste giving rise to the world-famous “Paellero Carmencita”. They subsequently developed a Paella kit for the consumer who wants everything necessary to prepare a paella in one place, including an enameled paella pan. Call Sibarita on 01255 245201 or 01787 323933 09.00-17.00, Mon to Fri or send an email at any time: hello@sibarita.co.uk

January 2020 when the buzz words were Brexit and Megxit, a thick cream envelope dropped through my letter box. A letter from the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolks Office, Clare, Countess of Euston would like to put my name forward to attend one of Her Majesty’s Garden Parties at Buckingham Palace. Checked the name on the envelope yes it was definitely for me. Since retirement I’m rarely out of jeans so posh frocks & hats are not really me but as Keith, the other half, pointed out this was a once in a lifetime honour and it would be very rude to decline. Then Covid hit, Royal Garden Parties were cancelled in 2020 & 2021 and as other issues emerged my priorities changed and the invitation slipped to the back of my mind. February 2022 and an email to say the Garden Parties would be back on this year so it was off to find that dress and hat. My sister came as my plus 1 and we had a fantastic afternoon, tea, cake & ice cream but nicest of all the people, everyone including the staff were so friendly and welcoming. It was certainly a very special afternoon and one we will long remember. I had jokingly said I wonder if we would see anyone we knew. Little did I know until reading Councillor Mick Fraser’s Above the Parapet column in the June issue of the Community News that, from his description of the weather, he and his wife were also there. The picture shows me with my sister and my dress is the same as the one worn by Cllr Frasers wife. Had we met I like to think we would both have been able to laugh about it and compliment each other on our good taste. Judith Hermite

Hadleigh Old School Art Gallery Shows this July Hadleigh Old School will be a haven for art and bird lovers this July as two very different exhibitions both have an avian element to their titles. Everyone is welcome to visit the gallery in Bridge Street to enjoy a varied range of original artwork. ‘Where the Rooks call, I’ll be There’, will showcase pictures and miniature creations by Hazel Bradshaw. Hazel describes her work as, “An abstract exploration of life and landscape; both as it is and how we remember it.” Titles of several pieces may give a sense of the themes explored: Beneath the anemones the fairies play, In the Cave We must be Careful Not to Offend the Gods, Cloak, Tidal, and Wedding Dress. Her landscapes are single images in which the many locations, both real and conceived, exist, whilst the visual biographies imply the details of a life, granting the viewer the liberty to construct the particularities of character and narrative. Hazel is well known as a mixed media artist and tutor in the local art scene, currently running classes in painting, felting and textiles, figurative drawing, and a craft group. Many recall her inspirational space dedicated to helping people find and develop their own creativity at Brook Farm Studios in Bildeston. Hazel now works out of a studio in Hadleigh. Mixed media as the term implies is a form where the artist employs several different materials in the creation of the artwork: it could be paint, cloth, paper, wood, floristry, photographs and found objects. As well as artwork for your wall, the show will be offering tiny ceramic pots and jewellery. ‘Where the Rooks call, I’ll be There’ opens at 7pm on Friday 8th July 2022. The exhibition continues with free public entry on these dates Sat 9 (10am5pm), Sun 10 (11-4), Fri 15 (11-4) Sat 16 (10-5) Sun 17 (11-4). ‘If only I had wings…’ Hadleigh Old School presents an exhibition of gouache paintings on paper by Aurogeeta Das. The 60 original paintings are on deckle-edged paper, and many were featured in the book If only I were a bird. Looking at these paintings is like bird watching, but watching birds in art. Aurogeeta lives in Norwich and explains the motivation behind her new show: "These paintings draw upon the culture of India, where I come from, insofar as they are inspired by floor-drawings called muggu, while also being influenced by the culture that I have embraced in the United Kingdom, which has such a rich appreciation for bird life. Bird watching is an activity that I have particularly engaged in since I moved to Norfolk, which offers bird watchers many wildlife reserves, marshes, and other habitats such as The Broads. Birds’ forms serve as an invisible grid, the basic characteristics being a beak, an eye, wings, and feet. These features sometimes lend definition to abstract shapes, transforming them into birds. These birds are not meant to be realistic, several may combine features of more than one real bird, like a chimera, i.e., composite of the physical attributes of two or more species. Most, however, are a figment of my imagination. To use Paul Klee’s expression, I take my line ‘for a walk’, hence the sinuous or looped lines. These paintings start with a pencilled linedrawing. When I colour in the resulting shapes I thus turn the initial line drawings into flat-colour gouache paintings.” If only I had wings opens at 7pm on Friday 22nd July 2022. The exhibition continues Sat 23 (10am-5pm), Sun 24 (11-4), Fri 29 (11-4), Sat 30 (10-5) Sun 31 (11-4). As ever we have limited parking on the driveway for those with access needs. Please email hello@hadleigholdschool.co.uk with any queries or to request an invitation to our preview evenings.

For the athletic followers the Commonwealth Games start on 28th July with events live from Birmingham. The pub industry is going through a period of extreme change at the moment. The great British tradition is at a crossroads. The pandemic added fuel to an already smoldering fire and the war between Russia & Ukraine is fanning the flames. We have all seen the cost of fuel increasing while energy costs have or are about to increase by margins never seen for decades. We have just renewed our energy contract going forward and the increases were eye watering. We will try to hold price rises to where we believe we can survive and our customers can still afford to frequent the pub. Many pubs have closed over the past two years and this week I read of a landlady closing up after 25 years of trading suggesting that the energy hike of 250% was the final nail. The brewers themselves, in particular the nationals have continued to shoot themselves in the foot by selling cheap booze to the supermarkets and getting us pubs to subsidise their strategy. The government have done little to assist the pub trade too, increasing the VAT on soft drinks and food back to 20% and increasing NI and other taxes. All we can ask is that you please try to support your local pub. Prices rises are not intended to rip off the customer. Rather, they are the the major means we have of balancing the books and staying open. Use it or lose it!!!! The Cock Inn, 89 George Street, Hadleigh Tel 01473 941049 www.thecockinnhadleigh.co.uk

Our happy, friendly, vibrant school has a community feel to it and has continued to build on many years’ success. Ofsted rated us as ‘Good’ in our most recent inspection (July 2021). https://hadleighcp.school/key-info/ofsted/ . We are continually striving to improve and develop our curriculum whilst offering a range of experiences to our pupils. Hadleigh Community Primary School has a well established reputation in the community for providing a caring and welcoming environment, a good education and many opportunities for children to extend their interests. There are high expectations of work and behaviour for all the school community and everyone is encouraged to work as a team and to be supportive and responsive to each other. Ofsted commented: positive learners whose 'behaviour in classrooms and around school is exemplary' (July 2021). We have spaces in all our year groups for September – why not book a tour so we can show you what we offer. Please ring 01473 822161 or email AskUs@hadcps.uk to book. We look forward to meeting you soon. Year 1 were blessed with beautiful weather for their Queen’s Jubilee celebration. After a week of craft activities including making decorations and commemorative place mats the children spent the last day of term learning about the Queen as part of their ‘What makes you Famous?’ topic. They then made sandwiches and decorated biscuits ready for an afternoon tea on the field. A royal themed scavenger hunt around the school followed and ensured they were hungry enough for lunch and afternoon tea! Year 2 On Wednesday 15th June Year 2 went on their school trip to Hedingham Castle. We all boarded a double decker bus and arrived at Hedingham in good time. The children experienced 8 different medieval activities in total, 4 before lunch and 4 after lunch. These included looking at medieval people's jobs and position in society, jousting in a tournament, what weaponry was used, the healers of that period in history and many more interesting and exciting activities! The weather was kind to us and we all had a fantastic day learning what it was like to live in Norman Castle in 1386.

Mayors First writing book As you may or not be aware I have been voted in for this year as the Town Mayor, this is a job that I will give my upmost to carry out for the town. During this year I will be attending many civic events around Suffolk and during these events I will be promoting our town; also during my tenure we will be holding events within the town to raise money for charitable causes or even just have a good time and engage with other residents. The charity that I have chosen this year is the Memories Café & Lunch Clubs run by the Ansell Centre but I will also be raising awareness of other charities. I have only been in position for a few weeks and I am amazed at the amount of Mayoral work that has to be carried out on behalf of the town, civic services in particular when you have to wear full civic robes, and our robes are unique and also heavy and hot. When I have been in procession with other civic leaders Hadleigh’s Mayoral robes stand out for the better and I am proud to wear them on your behalf. During this Jubilee month quite a few things were going on either in or around the town, the Town Council had a new beacon commissioned and placed at the highest point of Beaumont Park and this had to be lit by yours truly at exactly 21:45hrs on the Thursday in sync with all the other Beacons in Suffolk, so no pressure eh (can you imagine if I was unsuccessful “retired firefighter isn’t worth a light”). Still the beacon was lit on time thanks to the combined efforts of the office staff and myself plus a good few hundred residents willing it to light. Also a rather successful Garden Party (Big Lunch) was held in the Deanery Gardens on the Sunday which was well attended by Hadleigh residents (thanks to Father Jo and his wife, Mary-Lou for the use of the gardens). The lunch was organised by a small working group made up of Town Council staff and members of the public who volunteered their time whilst I was only there to act as eye candy. I must not forget a big shout out to various weather apps for getting the weather wrong again. As the Town Mayor it was not only my duty but pleasure to attend the Clopton Rose ceremony at the Holy Trinity Church, Long Melford, this ceremony is an annual event where the Mayor of Hadleigh pays one of the longest rents in the country, one red rose is to be laid on the tomb of Sir William Clopton for lands and buildings given to our town. Job done rent paid for another year. At the writing of this, Armed Forces week had not yet commenced, I mention this as I will be attending flag raising at Wattisham Flying Station and Hadleigh War Memorial on the Monday for a short ceremony and then a static parade on the Thursday consisting of 150 service personnel from across the three Armed Services. The Town Council will be supplying a buffet for these service personnel and other dignitaries at the Town Hall. I am hoping that many of you will have come down to the Market Place to show your support for our brave men and women as I know that they will appreciate it. Armed Forces week is our way of saying thanks to the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to protect not only our liberties but those of others around the world, these men and women could not do this without the support of their loved ones who we also salute. On a final note and one very dear to me, one of the things that attracted me to Hadleigh was the High Street and its surrounds, the high-street is the beating heart of Hadleigh and it needs our support by using the shops that are there. Our High Street is wonderfully diverse at the moment, so come on guys use our High Street. Gordon McLeod, Hadleigh Town Mayor

A Whole of a Hole! An update on the hole in Tinkers Lane One day in February last year I received a rather unusual contact from a resident; as he was walking along Tinkers Lane (the path off Benton Street which then runs along the river, near the football ground) he noticed a rather odd hole or opening in the area next to the river. Not only was there a hole, there appeared to be something in it. I rushed to check and immediately contacted Babergh’s Public Realm department. This was not your ‘common or garden’ hole. No, this was a a hole with a whole lot of history behind it. It turned out that hidden for many years, but now partially revealed, was possibly the mill wheel that once belonged to Toppesfiled Mill that was burnt down in February 1954. I, along with Jan Byrne, wrote a full story about this in Hadleigh Community News last spring. Some of you have been wondering what has happened since, so I thought that it is time for an update, for which I thank Babergh Building Services for the information. One aspect that you may have noticed early on, is that it turned out to be two holes not one, and one of the holes, on investigation, was 11 ft deep, with 7ft of it being filled with water. Babergh’s initial investigations suggest that the holes have appeared along the line of the old waterway that once served Toppesfield Mill and lies possibly either side of a bridge that once stood over the river Brett, but this is yet to be confirmed. Last year the area was fenced off for public safety and from a visitor’s perspective, there appears to be little visual change. However, since then, Babergh Building Services have been in contact with the Environment Agency and held a meeting to establish roles and goals for the site. The Environment Agency (EA) will be carrying out a design brief and seeking grant funding to carry out the work that is required. Any design works for the site that are carried out need to be led by the EA as the impact on the local environment must be the first consideration. From Babergh’s point of view and mine of course, we want the site and the situation resolved quickly, but unfortunately, it transpires that the EA feasibility work can take up to three years. Babergh’s concern is to ensure that the site is safe and tidy during the intervening (temporary) period and have engaged a Structural Engineer to assist with this. I have been informed that Babergh and EA’s long-term goals are to open up the cut and alleviate the potential local flooding issues by creating an overflow for flood water and an all-species fish ladder to bring back a more natural environment to the whole river system, which may include eel and trout passes. While those are the long-term goals, before any work can start, there has to be an estimate of the costs for funding, the feasibility work needs to be completed and base level designs for the project need to be created to ensure that funding streams match the proposals for the site. I have asked for the mill wheel, if that is what is buried on the site, to be retrieved and possibly restored and preserved for the town, but am waiting to hear on this. While sometimes wheels can turn slowly, especially mill wheels, hopefully eventually, the final result will be good visually, historically and for the environment. Cllr. Kathryn Grandon Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh South

What can we do to help the planet? When we asked visitors to the HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) stand at the Hadleigh Show about climate change, almost everyone was worried about it. After all there really does seem to be more hurricanes, more wildfires, more coastal erosion, more floods. Some people felt hopeless and overwhelmed (as we all do from time to time). Others were keen to do something locally and lots of people joined HEAT to find out how they can help here in Hadleigh. Most compelling were the young people who stopped by to talk to us about the urgent need for change to start right now. But if you’re anything like me, it’s hard to choose exactly what to do. Is it more important to recycle more, or to eat less meat? How much money will we save by insulating our home? How much carbon does it cost to take the family to Disney World and how does this compare to planting 10 trees? To answer these questions HEAT is holding a public meeting on ‘What We Can Do to Help the Planet’ on Thursday July 28th at 7.30pm at the URC. The speaker will be John Hall who was the Chief Executive of Essex Wildlife Trust until recently, so he really knows his stuff when it comes to the environment. John is also Chair of PACE (Practical Actions for Climate and the Environment), which is a similar organisation to HEAT, based in Manningtree. So if you want to know whether it is better to eat locally grown food or to go vegetarian, or if lowering the temperature of your house is more effective than putting some solar panels on the roof, then come and listen to John. Saving the Planet is a big old task – and Hadleigh is a great place to start! We all have limitations on what we can do: time, money, family and work commitments etc; most of us want to do something to help the planet but we are not sure what to do for the best. What is certain is that we can all do something and this presentation by John Hall will help you choose. What Can We Do to Help the Planet? - Public Meeting Speaker John Hall - Thursday 28 July in the URC at 7:30pm Hadleigh Environmental Action Team (HEAT) is a local community group which helps local people and organisations take climate change and the local environment into account whenever decisions are made. Hidden Gardens raise over £8600 with record visitor numbers! Visitors came in their hundreds to see Hadleigh’s Hidden Gardens on 11th June. Some were discovering our lovely historic town for the first time and told us how beautiful and interesting it was (but I think we really knew already, didn’t we?). Hadleigh’s Hidden Gardens are becoming very well known and popular on the open garden circuit. As well as our many local supporters and holidaymakers they arrived from all over East Anglia and beyond. One lady came by train and bus from Essex because she’d heard how good it always is. We even had some Americans (all right, I admit they were already in the UK but they were still keen to come!). The Deanery Garden counted over six hundred visitors with central gardens having nearly as many across the day, and even smaller gardens away from the centre had over 300 visitors. And they all talked about the beautiful buildings, and how much they enjoyed the market, the shops, the lunches and the refreshments as they wound their way between gardens. We have a lot to thank cake for! So many more people arrived this year we began asking couples to share a programme until we finally ran out of all 750, helpers at the always popular church lunches had to go shopping twice more during the day, and one gardener offering scones found herself quickly making and baking another large batch to cope with the demand. It proved a hugely successful day again for those opening their gardens and for our visitors, a real boost for Hadleigh and of course for the renovation fund for St Mary’s Church which receives all the profit. A huge thanks and congratulations to garden owners, our wonderful volunteers, and to our generous sponsors, and an extra mention for Kev Colbert who generously made and donated a garden sculpture which was raffled for £560. See you all next year!

News from Kersey School Acorns (Reception, Years 1 and 2) - We have had a great first week back at School this half term and have already begun exciting art and design creations. This half term the children will be focusing on mini-beasts and bugs and we cannot wait to watch our very own caterpillars grow into beautiful butterflies! We also hope the children have enjoyed watching their sunflower and bean plants grow over the half term. I have seen some wonderful pictures of you replanting them in the garden or allotments. Oaks (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6) - We have begun a new unit of learning in both English and Maths. In Maths, we are learning about statistics, revising our knowledge of bar charts and pictograms, and moving onto line graphs and even pie charts for the Y6s! In English, our learning is centred around a biography; so far, we have learned some of the features of the text type, to help us when we come to write our own. The focus of our writing will be the life of Sir David Attenborough and children may wish to do some additional research about him at home. Our music lessons continue to be fun and enjoyable and we are busy preparing for an end of term performance to parents. We are looking forward to having a weekly French lesson led by Madame Miller, from Hadleigh High School; this will be a great opportunity for us to get to know her before some of us move up to secondary school. Our brilliant Art afternoons with Mrs Quinn begin again very soon; we have loved the activities and learning so far and can’t wait to continue with our creations. If you happen to make a telephone call to school and the lovely Mrs O’Halloran is not able to get to the phone, you will be welcomed by one of our Year 6 pupils who are now responsible for recording voicemail messages. Many thanks to Lilly for our current voicemail! We are pleased to inform you of another exciting development from September: we will be moving to three classes. This will mean an average class size of ten pupils, which is better than in many private schools, ensuring a remarkable degree of individual learning support. For subjects such as sports we will revert to combining classes but this three class structure will be in place for the majority of the week: Class 1 - Reception and Year 1, Class 2 - Years 2, 3 and 4, Class 3 - Years 5 and 6 If you would like to know more about Kersey school or you would like to arrange a visit please ring the office on 01473 823397, email kerseyoffice@tilian.org.uk or visit our new website www.kersey.suffolk.sch.uk. Hadleigh Hidden Gardens

The Hadleigh Hidden Gardens was blessed with perfect weather on 11th June. The event was a huge success and we had a plant stall in Gale Pryor‘s lovely garden. Non stop visitors purchased various donated plants from our members with profits being shared with the church. Thanks to all who attended and made it such a great day. On Tuesday 14th June our trip to Beth Chatto gardens also had clear blue sky. What a joy to wander round numerous areas that display a wide variety of plants to inspire us in our own gardens..the setting is both colourful and tranquil. Our next meeting will be on Monday 11th July at 7.30 in the Guildhall. The topic is entitled “Hostas - a fresh perspective”...do come along. Visitors welcome at £4, members £2 The Guildhall garden is celebrating its 25th anniversary on Sat 2nd July between 2 - 5 pm. This almost secret garden is a delight and available to hire for private functions together with the hall. We are so fortunate to have such an historic and beautiful building in our town. Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Local Funds for Hadleigh Projects In 2022/2023, Suffolk's county councillors have each been given a Locality Budget (LB) of £8,000 to spend on local projects. This year’s LB allocation has been added to unspent funds from the previous financial year. I can make recommendations about funding from this budget, where I can demonstrate that people from Hadleigh will benefit from the project. This LB fund can also be combined with the Local Highways Budget for road safety schemes, or used to initiate new projects, or to provide additional funding to match against already committed internal or external resources. A recent example of where I committed funding was to help procure a fully [wheelchair] accessible toilet at Hadleigh and District Angling Society’s facility at Bullocky Fen. Last month, it was a pleasure to visit the Society’s Open Day event and review the fantastic effort they have made with this facility. Their event demonstrated how by having an accessible convenience, attracts family groups to enjoy the ambience of this activity. It is great for the wellbeing of all who participate there.

Thank you to The Lacchin Family sharing their experience; and the wee Carp was let back in the pond. As a District Councillor for the South Ward, I also have a £2,000 Locality Award Budget which can be used for similar schemes. I prefer to fund tangible items which hold a lasting and inclusive use, or to prime projects at their respective launch. However, I felt duty-bound to provide funding for initiatives in support of High Street businesses throughout and as recovered from the COVID pandemic, which would normally have been selfgenerated. In past years groups and projects that benefited included: sports equipment for various clubs, furniture for church groups, kitchen equipment for the Guildhall and Cricket Club, shelving for the library and foodbank, Hadleigh in Bloom to aid the High Street, Mental 1st-Aider training, and others. Recently I have committed funding from both pots towards projects such as: • £500.00 Town Council to plant trees at the cemetery extension • £1,000.00 Hadleigh Grand Feoffment Charity for two Automated External Defibrillator at their Alms Houses • £1,250.00 Mental 1st Aid Training for Hadleigh residents • £750.00 Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra “Lark’s Flight over Suffolk” affiliated schools workshops • £2,500.00 Hadleigh Skate Park towards the cost of providing challenging obstacles for users and seating areas • £1,295.00 Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society to purchase digital wireless headsets • £600.00 to the Town Council for The Hadleigh Lighting Up event Please contact me should you have a project or equipment need for your organization that may benefit from the local funds I have available at my disposal. Beestons 84C Bus Service Cancellation I regret to report that Beestons will be cancelling the 84C bus service and it will no longer be available for post16 students to access education facilities in Colchester, from September 2022. They have stated that due to low passenger numbers, it is no longer financially viable for them to operate. This 84C service was previously amended so that post-16 children could travel to Colchester, after the 971 Service was cancelled back in 2020. Beestons agreed then to operate an 84C service as a solution to enable those students to get to Colchester by connecting with the 84 service in Nayland. I am currently working with Suffolk’s Passenger Transport Services and other stakeholders to identify what alternative arrangements can be made to allow children to continue with their chosen education arrangements. Councillor Surgery Due to annual leave, my next surgery will be delayed by one week until Saturday, 23rd July 2022 at 11:00 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street. Should you need to speak to me concerning an issue that affects you, then please contact me at - email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk or mick.fraser@babergh.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or Facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh, Twitter: @mick_fraser. Lets Fight Cancer... My name is Trevor Clarke, you may know me from Partridges or as DJ Trev from Clarkes Events who does discos and the yard sales in Hadleigh. Last September our dad Tim Clarke got extremely ill and he found out it was cancer. Tim was told he would make a plan for his treatment, but the day before his first appointment he was rushed to hospital with a heart attack. Of course this was during Covid so nobody was allowed to go with him or even visit him, not even my mum at the start. A month on things were getting worse and he was then transferred to St Elizbeth Hospice in Ipswich. Mum was allowed some visiting but my sister Steph and myself were not allowed to visit to start off with. We so wanted to visit dad as his condition was getting worse so we managed to get some visiting in to see him. When we saw dad he had changed so much, but we were all very happy to see each other. The consultant went up to the ward to discuss the cancer. We arranged for a few people from band to play in Hospice gardens which dad enjoyed and other patients and staff as well. On the 20th Sept 21 at 2am dad passed away aged 71 with us by his side. Dad had arranged a 70th Birthday party with the band Deja Vu but due to Covid this didn't happen. Dad was meant to be playing guitar in the band for his party as a special treat as he was so musical. The band wanted to make it up to dad and so we decided to do a fund raising event with the band. On the 10th Sept 22 at Elmsett Village Hall 7:30-11:30pm we will be holding a charity dance with the band Deja Vu. It’s a bring your own food and drink event with a large raffle taking place. ALL money will be going towards St Elizabeth hospice and tickets can be bought online at www.clarkesevents.uk or call trev on 07787 158085. This is open to everyone who has lost loved ones like my dad. Please help us raise some funds and have a good night at the same time.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 There was an excellent atmosphere at our village Jubilee celebration last month. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed meeting visitors at the SESAW Pets’ Corner and gift stall. Our volunteers are holding a Table Top Sale at Newton Green Village Hall, CO10 0QS, 11am-2.30pm on Saturday 2nd July. They will be selling jewellery and accessories, glass, china and homeware, pet goodies, books and more. Try a new, fun card game – Cardola, three go’s for £1! There will also be homemade cakes and refreshments, free admission and parking. We have many animals for rehoming including a pair of older cats that arrived last summer because their owner was ill. It was hoped Lord Iffy and Winnie would return home, sadly circumstances changed and they are now looking for a calm, quiet adult household. Both cats love to lie in the sun and would appreciate a sunny window sill to bask and watch the world go by. If you can offer this deserving pair a loving home, please leave a message on the answerphone. Mum says we are now open to visitors from 10am to 1pm from Thursday to Sunday during the Summer. Please check with Facebook or the website if you have a long journey. I have a short journey to the kitchen where dinner is ready for all the dogs, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Dear Sir, I want to thank the Hadleigh community who have been so supportive and kind while I was ill for the last few months. I especially want to thank everyone at St Mary’s Church and Hadleigh Community Forum, as well as individuals, who have all really demonstrated the true essence of community and Church community; your thoughts and prayers were a great help. I am now feeling much better (for which I have the care of the many teams at Ipswich Hospital to thank), although I sometimes feel tired. With regard to my life as a Councillor, I was overwhelmed to be elected as Chairman of Babergh District Council again - I am excited to represent Babergh at civic events in particular. I plan to re-start my face-to-face surgery with Hadleigh South residents in early autumn (watch out for updates in this magazine) and of course, as always, you can contact me by email or phone (see the Babergh website for details). I hope to have at least one fund-raising event during my term as Chairman, but for those who feel so-inclined, please look at my Just Giving page - my charity is The Ipswich Hospital Blossom Appeal - just search ‘Babergh’ on the search line. Thank you again for all your support, Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh South Chairman Babergh District Council

Dear Sir, I can't help noticing that the monthly newsletter from our esteemed Member of Parliament has not appeared in local magazines the last couple of issues. Has he given an explanation for this which I missed, or has he just decided that his new role as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Justice makes him too busy or too important to waste time on such trivia. The reason for my asking is that, in the past to my admiration, he found time to reply to e-mails from humble constituents like me, but stopped doing so about two years ago. Now all I get is an occasional general circular from his secretary, which suggests that he no longer even bothers to read any private communications from his constituents, be they supporters or otherwise. I would certainly not consider voting for any parliamentary representative who treats potential voters with such disdain and in the current political situation, I would suggest he is perhaps not acting wisely. Yours, Paul Marshall

Dear Sir,

BREWING FINE SUFFOLK ALES SINCE 17955

Each year as more new houses are built, the population of Hadleigh expands. Yet the amount of green open space in our town doesn’t seem to grow with it - and worse still it even seems to be shrinking per head of population. The Government’s own environmental body Natural England recommends to Councils and developers that everybody should be within 5 minutes’ walk of 2 hectares of green space. The multiple benefits of local green space and routine contact with nature include: improved public health, both physical and mental; reduced stress and improved wellbeing; reduced health-related costs to society; increased social cohesion within and between neighbourhoods and communities. In fact, access to green spaces for health is recognised and reflected in social prescribing by the NHS. In Suffolk there is currently an obesity epidemic. A third of Suffolk’s upper primary school children are either obese or over weight. In Suffolk’s adults this figure is over 60%. At the same time there is a mental health crisis, exacerbated by the Covid pandemic. The NHS is struggling to cope with the demands placed on it. Yet increasingly, there are more and more parts of Hadleigh where access to green open space is limited and being further restricted.

Firstly, a large area of St Mary’s School playing field/East House Meadow has been fenced off, even outside of school hours. More recently fencing and security gates have been installed preventing any access to the upper part of Hadleigh High School’s sports field, despite being well away from school buildings which understandably need protection. Many school playing fields are now in effect privately owned by Academy Trusts. Yet the cost of their upkeep is funded by the public. Surely therefore, tax payers and locally elected bodies such as Hadleigh Town Council, Babergh District Council and Suffolk County Council should be able to influence how this space is managed for the good of everyone? I hope that common sense will prevail and conversations between the relevant groups will lead to improvements in green open space provision in Hadleigh – for the sake of today’s residents and future generations in our beautiful town. Yours sincerely, Joe Grist

Dear Sir, I'm writing on behalf of the committee to thank Gardeners, Sponsors, Volunteers and everyone one who contributed in making our open garden day on 11th June such an immense success. It was a wonderful social event for the town which, as you may already know, raised over £8600 for the physical upkeep of St Mary's Church after all the costs were deducted and broke all the records set last year. We did wonder if we could match such a bumper year again, but with your help we went well beyond it this year. All the programmes sold out as visitors came from across East Anglia, Essex and beyond. Over 600 people went into the Deanery garden, up to 400-500 were counted in gardens in the centre of town and over 300 found their way to some of the gardens a short walk from the centre which is unprecedented. The lunches and refreshments at St Mary's Church were in such demand that we found ourselves having to make repeated additional shopping trips to keep replenishing the stock! As ever, the success of this part of the day is due to both the great generosity of the cake makers of Hadleigh, and the volunteers in the Church who worked tirelessly all day - so many thanks to you, one and all. This year many visitors were able to enjoy their meal either inside the Church or out in the graveyard enjoying the sunshine. This annual event in Hadleigh is becoming ever more popular on the open gardens circuit and again proved a very successful day for the town in so many ways. But it could not have been achieved without the many contributions by a large number of people and we thank you for the part you played. Louise Chambury Chair, Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh Committee

Dear Sir, I live on the Persimmon estate just past Morrisons. Nearly every morning I walk down Oxford Drive to the town passing a large, green untouched area with a multitude of various flowers, grasses etc. None of these were particularly tall and certainly were not impeding any traffic. Each day I could see different species of wild life including, occasionally, butterflies, in this area. On Tuesday as I approached this spot I was amazed to see a large tractor just driving away, having mowed the whole tract. Could someone explain to me why it was necessary to do this when there was so much wild life activity still there? Janet Findlay

Ansell Memories Café Here at the Ansell Memories Café we celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee in style with a garden party. We had lots of fete games, including the obligatory sweets in a jar and guess the name of the dog along with union jack tin-can alley, a coronation crown competition and royal family bingo. The weather was very kind to us and it was a beautiful day in every way. We had lots of party food thanks to funds raised from Peggy’s raffle and trifles and jelly and ice cream coming out of our ears thanks to kind contributions from Roz, Faith and Sarah. Also special thanks to our other volunteers who helped make the day possible – Colin, Janet and Keith, Trevor, Mary and Marion. We were so happy to be able to make the day such a success and share all the good things that make the Memories Café such a lovely place to come to every week. If you are living with dementia, or a carer or if you are feeling lonely or isolated, we can promise you a warm welcome. Feel free to just come and join us at the Ansell Centre every Thursday between 11am and 3pm.

Get your bike out for the summer

Hadleigh Cycling Club’s 7th Annual Gayford Flyer sportive will take place on Sunday, 11th September. It costs £15 to enter and this includes refreshments. Since Lockdown we have been very keen to encourage cyclists to try out the many lightly-trafficked routes around the town. The Gayford Flyer 2022 reflects this philosophy and we have devised two routes of around 60 and 30 miles which incorporate mostly quiet roads close to Hadleigh, with some great views and the odd challenge. Details on how to enter can be found www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk. The Club’s three young racers, Aaron, Ciaran and Evie have progressed well in recent weeks. Evie took the lead roughly halfway through her race at Hethel and steadily increased the gap in the remaining laps. She took the win in Youth D Girls by nearly 26 secs and she has since followed this up with a second win of the season. Evie follows in the footsteps of Martha Lebentz, our most successful rider who graced many podiums in Hadleigh Cycling Club colours. Martha progressed to the Tofauti Everyone Active Race Team for her Junior years and she has recently joined Lifecycle UK Race Team for her next chapter in racing. There was a terrific turn out of town folk for the Women’s Tour riders when they sprinted through the town on June 6th, despite the weather. Club cyclists were out to fly the flag. The Club runs a social ride on Sundays which usually begin at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. Currently, we’re also running regular rides on Wednesdays (gentle), Thursdays (leg spinner) and Fridays (women). Something for everyone. The rides are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

Hadleigh North Ward - June 2022 Firstly, may I congratulate our Very Rev'd Jo Delfgou and his team of diligent supporters, who kindly allowed the town to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee in the gardens of the Deanery. Jo estimated 700 attended and may I thank him for organising and making the day such a special event for the residents of Hadleigh. The lighting of the beacon during the Jubilee Celebration in Hadleigh Ward was an enjoyable event and again well attended, thank you to our Mayor and Town Clerk for their organisation. I am advised the beacon could be seen for miles around and it was a wonderful way to celebrate and thank our Queen Elizabeth for her 70 years of loyalty and integrity. The Queen has represented this country and respected worldwide, so whether you support the monarchy or not, one cannot help to be appreciate at 96 years old the challenging work she has undertaken throughout her life and continues to do so graciously. Corks Lane Development – in my humble opinion, there are a number of factors that need to be considered. My Conservative colleagues have assisted in supporting me with the ongoing questions as to why this development is not proceeding at Cabinet last week, the proceedings were halted as we were not given the opportunity to challenge. I asked the Cabinet Members not to endorse the recommendation to extend the holding company’s debt threshold from £3.7 million to £7 million. The decision should be brought to Full Council, not rushed through as planning permission is expiring September 2022 for phase 1 site, 2a new builds next to phase 1and 2b Bridge Lane Car Park. This is a key decision that should be made by all Councillors, not the Cabinet of independents, green and lib dem Councillor in charge of the project and who that have historically failed to understand or acknowledge the issues. This is decision is not about cashflow, it is now about risk. Factors that need to be considered are: • Babergh entered a joint venture with Norske Dec 2018 - with Babergh providing 100% of funding. The Rainbow Cabinet agreed the approach as they believed it would enable a scheme to be brought forward “reasonably quickly and would overcome the necessity for a lengthy procurement process”. This site has already cost Babergh residents more than £500/- in security, £320/- in consultancy fees and maintenance over the last 6 years. I suggest the Independents, Greens and Lib Dems should consider the lengthy process, a partner with no financial vested interest and the excessive spending of public funds, is this Joint Venture with this partner the right way to proceed? • Car Park – the building on the Bridge Lane car park goes against the longterm vision for Hadleigh. The Cabinet would not accept unmistakable evidence that I obtained when undertaking the Strategic Parking Review, that Hadleigh has reached the parking threshold of 80%, so to build over an existing car park with 100 spaces in the centre of town, just to obtain a profit on the main Corks Lane site is to say the least very poor forward planning. • Flood Risk - The proximity of the site to the River Brett imposes significant flood risk constraints. No updated modelling has taken place and new guidelines of pluvial standing water suggest building houses on the car park may not now be viable. I question how a profit can be made from 2b if we cannot build. • In Feb 2016 Carter Jonas undertook an initial soft assessment valuation of the site and followed this up with their Employment Viability Report Sept 2016. Their appraisal valued the site at £2.5m - £2.6m. I believe at very least, should the Cabinet have considered the Informal marketing advice in June’s Cabinet paper of £500/- or the formal advice by a professional agent? • Cabinet papers advise we are currently experiencing significant inflationary market pressures in construction because of Brexit, pandemic, rising inflation, Ukraine and now, unforeseen inflationary pressures. Last year I raised my concerns about increasing cost of materials and labour from 1835% minimum, my comments were ignored. As the Ward Member for North Hadleigh, where Corks Lane is situated, I desperately want to see a development that is not going to incur further costs to stakeholders and fail to understand why Babergh might not consider just putting the property on the open market and whatever the site sells for is profit for Babergh as opposed to undertaking a lengthy, risky development project in a highly volatile market that Cabinet members failed to recognise. The independent Cllr Ward suggests doubling the debt threshold against a questionable “break even or modest profit” assumption. There are just too

many unknowns. In a commercial world it would have been thrown out a long time ago as a risk too far. • On to the more routine items, the weed spraying in Hadleigh is managed centrally by Suffolk County Council, the spraying schedule currently indicates Hadleigh will be covered week commencing 20th June 2022. I have chased this as it has become unsightly the grass and weeds growing through the paving slabs. • Pavement and road cleaning will take place on Wednesday 22nd at 06.00am. I have requested this to take place for the Armed Forces Events. • Suffolk County Council proposes to apply a permanent 7.5 tonnes maximum gross weight restriction on Cosford Bridge, Ivy Tree Lane, Hadleigh. This restriction is necessary for reasons of safety, to protect the bridge, road and any building on or near the road from loads that are too heavy and unsafe. • Access via the internet for local resident at the public library for the Winter Fuel Allowance Energy Rebate £150 has I understand become overly complicated at Hadleigh Library. All complaints can be forwarded to the Independent Cabinet Member responsible for Public Access Cllr Alastair McCraw (Peninsula). The access has been detrimentally changed, for reasons I cannot understand and residents who do not use internet are requested to provide an email but no name. Previously residents were sent cheques, and now now have to provide an email but no name. Previously residents were sent cheques, and now to provide an email address. In addition, no provision or field has been made for their Account Name! Without this, the system does not recognise individuals and has caused delay and confusion. Previously residents were sent cheques, and now Babergh are writing to residents to request details for electronic transfer. I have written to the Independent Member to suggest a public apology is made to the numerous people who were inconvenienced and queued across Babergh and could he rectify the system expediently. Please do not hesitate to contact should you have any concerns. Cllr Dr Siân Dawson M: 07931 703157 E: sian.dawson@babergh.gov.uk

New Defibrillator at Londis Observant visitors and passers-by will have noticed a new defibrillator on the outside wall of Londis Garage. What they will not know is how many community spirited people have been involved in its arrival. Prompted by a friend’s sad experience trying to locate a machine out (L to R) Tony Hayward, Wendy Brame, of trading hours, Jan Ian Burne, Kathy Adams, Jan Devey Devey raised the matter at the Hadleigh Town Forum. Wendy Brame, the Town Clerk suggested that an application be made to the Hadleigh Town Council for funding. Although this was successful, the request had to come from an organisation rather than an individual. Step forward Ian Burne, President of Hadleigh Rotary Club. The group was looking for a worthy cause to support and securing a lifesaving machine for the town fitted the bill perfectly. As other causes had also benefitted from Town Council funding the grant didn’t quite cover all the costs. Step forward a national charity, London Hearts, whose raison d'être is to financially assist with the purchase and supply of defibrillators and also offer training. They agreed to not only supply the machine but also make up the financial shortfall. After a considerable wait the machine arrived. The delay gave time to, secure its location at Londis with Kathy Adams, the Manageress of the garage and its installation with electrician Tony Hayward at Hadleigh based S. Cowle Electrical Ltd. Now that the machine is in place and registered with the national defibrillator network, ‘Circuit’, the next task is to offer training sessions to anyone who is interested in knowing how to make use of it in an emergency. Step forward Tracey Loynds and Jonathan Harvey at the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre and Trevor Sheldrake one of our town’s First Responders. Free training sessions with Trevor are now scheduled to take place at the Leisure Centre during the next few months. See booking details in the HCN and on the Leisure Centre’s website. www.eventbrite.com. Sincere thanks to all involved in this truly worthwhile initiative which now provides that area of the town with a lifesaving machine at any time of the day or night.

Everyone is Welcome, there is no charge, but a small donation to HMF Charity towards the upkeep of the garden would be kindly appreciated. Entry is via the Guildroom, entrance within St Mary’s Churchyard.

Hadleigh Guildhall Garden is available for private hire.

For the joy of Love and Music Hello Hadleigh! You are invited to come and share with us, Hadleigh Community Choir, as we celebrate 10 glorious years of bringing music to the Hadleigh community. We have had quite a year so far, with substantial funding from Hadleigh Town Council enabling us to record a cd that will be distributed to all who like music but are unable to see us in concert. The choir have been asked to sing on several occasions this year including the lighting of the Commonwealth Beacon, the celebration of the life of Dorothy Panks, and we are soon off to Newmarket having been invited there to take part in a major event. Our main focus, however, is on our two summer concerts on Saturday July 16th. The theme of this year’s special concerts is ‘Now That’s What I Call Hadleigh Community Choir’ where the favourite songs from the past ten years have been carefully selected to give you a flavour of our musical journey. Of course, we will throw in a couple of new items for good measure! The matinee concert will start at 2pm and tickets are £5 each. The matinee is designed for those who may prefer not to go out in the evening. The evening concert will start at 7.30pm and tickets for this are £8 each and will also include a fingerfood buffet with drinks served for an additional donation to choir funds. Tickets are available from Keith Avis Newsagent and The Idler bookshop as well as from choir members. We are so delighted to be back singing again after the last couple of horrible years, and we hope to welcome as many of you as possible. Sarah Thompson

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre How fast half the year has gone! Must be my age.... The Centre closes after 8th July. Babs and I get firmly locked up so there’s nothing for us to do or see. We can still hear the able-bodied riders coming up to the stables to exercise the live horses, the people on Lyn’s team who check things out (on a daily basis) and the maintenance team members who never seem to stop their fantastic work. I’m told that we may get an extension built to increase the size of our office and kitchen accommodation. Typical of the volunteers: any excuse for more cake eating facilities. It’s true that those poor humans get ever more paperwork too, and records need to be well looked after. So we may have more noises off than is normal this holidays.

Jubilee Celebrations at the Ansell Centre

The Centre’s AGM will happen on Tuesday July 5th and will be back to normal: lots of volunteers, unlimited guests, food and drink in the yard, a veritable party after the previous two years. My ears will be wigging. Congratulations to the Wednesday team of volunteers who celebrated the Jubilee at the first opportunity after half term. The arena and yard were decked in Union flags, everyone wore red white and blue, the riders’ games were themed, and there was a cut out model of H.M.the Queen actually in the arena! Look at Jo Goodlitt with Ruby in the yard, and Joseph, Daniel and Freya waiting to be called forward for their ride on a sunny June 8th. Good job everyone! Tea With a Pony continues on Wednesday afternoons as well. Don’t forget it is open to anyone living with a disability who would benefit from spending time outdoors, in a very safe environment, with the ponies, and of course, Tea and Cake! Website: shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172

Both lunch clubs and the Memories Cafe celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee in style. The First Lunch Club enjoyed fish and chips followed by strawberries, blueberries and cream and were entertained by a selection of music from the 40s and 50s. The Wednesday Lunch Club chose quiche and salad followed by Jubilee meringues. Both these events were held indoors, but the Memories Cafe took advantage of a lovely sunny day to hold a party outside in the URC garden – see a full report elsewhere in this publication. The trustees would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to make these events so successful. And a special thank you to Sue for giving up her bank holiday to organise Jubilee themed games, quizzes and crafts for the Memories Cafe.. As you can see below, everyone had a wonderful time.

Letter from Layham www.layham.org

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council AGM of 18 May were: Election of Chairman and Officers It was agreed that Charlotte Britton be reelected Chairman for 2022/23; she confirmed she was happy to accept the nomination. It was further agreed that Michael Woods be re-elected Vice Chairman; he accepted the nomination. Declaration of Acceptance of Offer forms were duly signed. • District Council Councillor Ward said the Women’s Cycle Tour would be passing through Upper Layham on Monday 6 June at around 1pm, en route to Hadleigh. All council tax account holders who paid by direct debit had received their £150 energy rebate by the end of April. Everyone else had received a letter directing them to an online application form; an automatic credit would be made to anyone who had not responded within three weeks. Further help and guidance was available from libraries. • County Council report Cllr Hall was continuing to follow up on the footpath to Hadleigh from Upper Layham; she was still awaiting a response re the flooding near the Rugby Club. • Noticeboards It was agreed to accept the quote to refurbish the noticeboard at the junction of Mill Lane and Upper Street; Bob Barbiaux had kindly offered to refurbish the board in Lower Layham. The noticeboard at the Recycling Centre was beyond repair; however, rather than accept the quote for a like-for-like replacement, it was agreed to look at purchasing a larger, more durable noticeboard. • Date of June meeting It was agreed to change this to Wednesday 22 June 2022 – 7.30pm in the Village Hall. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee The people of Layham celebrated the Queen's Platinum Jubilee at a Fete on their Playing Field on Sunday 5th June. The rain held off and the event turned out to be a huge success, thoroughly enjoyed by the local community and raising over £3000 for local organisations and a further £450 to support Ukranian refugees.

As well as events in the arena we had traditional games: guess the number of jewels in the crown, hook a duck, tin-can ally, penalty shootout and roll the giant dice. We had 10 stalls, BBQ, beer and prosecco, teas and cakes, and strawberries and cream. Layham Events Community Group thank everyone who helped make this event possible. There were over 60 volunteers, including Layham Playgroup who helped children to make crowns and decorated us with glitter tattoos. The raffle prizes, donated by over 20 local businesses and residents, were impressive, raising £1500. The first prize was a meal for two at the Marquis and a night in the bridal suite. We were also grateful to receive over 100 prizes for the Tombola. We had a grand entrance by Queen Teddy and Tanith her chauffeur (Landlady of the Queen’s Head). Queen Teddy was presented with a beautiful bouquet, by a 'lady bird'! Queen Teddy's throne was kindly lent to us by the Very Revd Jo Delfgou. Layham Platinum Jubilee mugs were offered free to all the children of Layham. They were paid for by Babergh District Council's Locality fund, Bob Davey, David Queen ‘Teddy’ arrives in her Aplin and The Queen’s Head fund. carriage 60's and 70's music helped to make this a very special occasion. Thanks to Michael Mumford our local DJ and Brian Hempstead our key board player. We thank our announcer David Aplin and photographer John Cryer. A big thank you to all who bought raffle tickets and turned up on the day to join in so enthusiastically! Local History Exhibition Over the Friday and Saturday of the Jubilee Bank Holiday, the Layham Local History Group put on an exhibition of Layham snapshots (1952-2022) in the church. The PCC provided refreshments. Over 100 people called in over the two days and reminisced about Layham events, people and places recorded during our Queen’s reign.

Layham Playgroup We are very lucky to be situated in the lovely Suffolk countryside, so we can observe the changing seasons and countryside. We have cows, horses, sheep, and the river to observe. In setting we now have some caterpillars to watch as they grow and change into butterflies, which we hope to release into our garden. We have been busy planting flowers and herbs as well as making sure our bug hotel is ready for any new creatures that need a home. We are now enrolling for September playgroup sessions. If you have a child approaching 2 and would like to know more about Layham Playgroup check out our website www.layhamplaygroup.co.uk, or phone 07999 866419 to book a visit. Hadleigh Choral Society Summer is here and the choir takes a break now until September when preparations for the Autumn concert start in earnest. Our concert at Stratford St Mary on 18th June was very enjoyable in a beautiful setting. Thank you to St Mary's Church for playing host, we look forward to visiting again in the future. One of the many benefits of our choir is the opportunity to meet and make friends either as a member of the choir or as a 'Friend'. We have a valued group of Friends, music lovers who support us and enjoy meeting regularly at our concerts. The subscription is just £15 per year, per person. As a Friend you will enjoy: • Priority booking for the two major concerts, with allocated seating • Complimentary glass of wine during the interval of each major concert • Regular newsletter to keep you up to date with choir matters • Acknowledgement in the concert programme If you're struggling to think of a gift for someone who enjoys live music or would benefit from meeting new friends in a relaxed and friendly environment, consider an annual subscription to the Friends of Hadleigh Choral Society. For more information, contact Angie McGonnell on 07538 552590. Save the date: Our Autumn concert will be on Saturday 19th November at St Mary's Church, Hadleigh. The programme is currently being finalised but will include the rarely performed Mass in C by Beethoven.

The Directors would like to advise our members, the local business community and other interested parties that we have decided to cease the activities of the Chamber. Despite our best endeavours, including a major drive for membership and volunteers in November 2020, we have not been able to attract sufficient interest in order to fully deliver on the objectives of the organisation going forward. Hadleigh Market to welcome more start-up businesses Ambitious business owners who are looking to grow and expand can benefit from support from Babergh District Council as their Innovate Local scheme in Hadleigh Market is extended. Businesses interested in taking part in the Innovate Local scheme will have access to a free pitch on the market for up to 4 weeks as well as advice and support to help take their business to the next level, engage directly with customers and reach new audiences. The Innovate Local scheme is available in Hadleigh and Stowmarket and is expanding to Sudbury for the first time. Business owners who wish to take part in the scheme and meet all the criteria, can apply with an overview of their business. The scheme is Kelly Clark, owner of being delivered by Suffolk Market Events who provide on-the-ground assistance to Apothekelly Skincare took start up business owners and guide them part in the Innovate Local through the different elements of running a scheme at Hadleigh market in December 2021. successful market stall. Suffolk Market Events, who recently won the contract to manage Hadleigh Market on behalf of Babergh District Council for the next three years, have supported 9 businesses at Hadleigh and Stowmarket since the launch of Innovate Local in 2021. The Innovate Local scheme was initially funded from the Suffolk Inclusive Growth Investment Fund (SIGIF) and the Welcome Back Fund (from the EU Regional Development Fund) as part of Babergh District Council’s package of measures to support business post Covid. Commenting on the Innovate Local scheme, Cllr John Ward, leader of Babergh District Council and cabinet member for economic growth: “The Innovate Local scheme provides a unique opportunity to experience a busy local market. I would encourage any business owner who has wanted to grow their business in a market environment to take part in the scheme and receive the support and guidance to help them flourish.” Hadleigh Market runs every Friday and regularly welcomes around 18 regular traders. Justine Paul, Suffolk Market Events, who also runs the market in Lavenham which was recently named best UK Market 2022, commented: “‘I am absolutely delighted that Innovate Local is coming back for a second year. This brilliant project is all about enabling small businesses to grow from the Kitchen Table to a Market Stall. Last year nine applicants went through this scheme and all have continued trading - it really did have a huge positive impact on every single person involved and it’s great to be able to run it again in 2022.” In December 2021, Babergh District Council surveyed stall holders and regular visitors to Hadleigh Market to help shape its future. The majority of respondents stated the market was a key asset for Hadleigh and had been particularly important during the Covid restrictions. Over the next three years, Suffolk Market Events will focus on how to enhance the unique community value of the market at the heart of the town and explore opportunities for growth and development. For more information, please visit www.babergh.gov.uk To find out more and apply to take part in the Innovate Local scheme, please contact: Justine Paul by email justine@suffolkmarketevents.co.uk or call 07704 627973

The catering and Jan’s Store Cupboard team for Hidden Gardens take five before the event begins. By the end of the day they will have served over 650 customers with various refreshments, delicious homemade cakes and produce. Their combined takings amounted to over £2800. Sincere thanks to all who contributed their time and effort to provide the excellent fayre and make the day such a success.

Jubilee Celebrations at Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee was celebrated in style at Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School. The day began with red, white and blue themed non-uniform then buddy activities for the whole morning. These included a whole school picture of Queen Elizabeth II and preparations for the afternoon party with bunting being made, hats prepared along with decorated place mats to use. We also had a Jubilee Collective Worship where we gave thanks for the Queen’s life and service while looking at the changes that she had seen during her reign of 70 years on the throne. In the afternoon we sang the Jubilee song together and had a playground party in the Queen’s honour with old-fashioned food. Many sandwiches, jam tarts, crisps and cake were eaten along with plenty of jelly and ice-cream! Hadleigh United Football Club Some belated thanks to all our Supporters, Match Day Sponsors and Advertising Board Sponsors for their Support last season. With the 2020/21 season not coming to a conclusion, fingers and toes were crossed for the season just past with all our teams managing to complete all of their fixtures despite some last minute call offs of matches due to Players having to isolate, so its hopefully onwards and upwards for the coming season. Having had extensive works carried out to the main Millfield pitch, soil spread to level up some of the dips that have occurred over many years and the whole pitch seed drilled. Whilst the grass seed has germinated well and needing as much time as possible for the root structure to form there will be no pre-season friendlies on the pitch this summer. We have some away matches already lined up and these will be posted on our website & Facebook page.We have been advised by the Eastern Counties Football League (Thurlow Nunn) that our First Team league matches will commence on 30th July and we expect the fixtures to be published during mid July and again as soon as these are available these will be on the website and Facebook page with Reserves and Under 18's & S.I.L Brettsiders team to be advised. With our Club Legend Merv Bignell completing 50 years service for the Club he has decided to hang up his ‘latex gloves’ and will no longer be our 1st team match day physio so we are on the look out for someone to take over this important role, anyone interested please contact us via enquires@hadleighutd.co.uk Finally as with all Clubs / Organisations we are obliged to hold a yearly Annual General Meeting and as such we will be holding ours in the Clubhouse on Wednesday 20th July @ 7.30pm all club members are more than welcome to attend. Latest Project to Ukraine We were extremely lucky to find a VW Transporter located in Needham Market. This is a left hand drive vehicle in excellent condition with the added bonus of a layout bed in the rear which will be such an asset for transporting people with severe disabilities. Our CEO Dennis Vystavkin then travelled to Mid Suffolk to collect the Van which had been loaded with locally sourced folding bikes, shoes, clothing, fidget toys for disabled children, bedding, towels, medicines, shoes and so many other items that we were almost out of room before the vehicle was collected. Some temporary housing for approx 140 families has been built out of porter cabins, all of which have to be fully stocked to support those families who have lost everything and need emergency temporary accommodation. A Stowmarket resident donated a huge amount of almost brand new camping equipment (sleeping bags, cookware, camping stoves, pure wool blankets, pillows, and a special mattress cover which will go to a local hospital to be used to prevent bedsores) all of which will prove invaluable. A roof box was also found locally for the van giving us another great area for storage. Finally a local supporter of the Charity provided free of charge, the magnetic signage for the vehicle which not only tells why we are travelling but will hopefully help towards ease of passage as the journey progressed. As the photo shows, not one inch has been left free – we are just fingers crossed Dennis is not asked to unload at any point before the end of the journey! Finally, a big shout out to everyone involved in Mid Suffolk who has contributed to this project. Everything we are sending, be it large or small, when added together is going to make such a huge difference to the lives of so many people. Thank you.
