EXCELLENT FARES RELIABLE SERVICE
01473 829700 bookings@hadleighprivatehire.co.uk
Did you spot these? By the time you read this unfortunately the magnificent display of irises next to the Magdalen Road Car Park will be over. Their beauty is so short lived you may be wondering why the Community Garden Team and iris lover Sarah Cook chose those particular flowers in the first place. However, there is method in their madness as many of these flowers were originally bred, developed, cultivated and painted by artist and plantsman, Cedric Morris at his Hadleigh home Benton End. Having paid tribute to Cedric’s significant artistic and horticultural talents at the Festival of Gardening and Art 2017 it seemed only fitting to create a flowery legacy too. Hence flower beds full of different species of irises. Next year you will be able to enjoy magnificent examples of Benton Nigel, Benton Cordelia, Benton Menace and Edward Windsor. There will also be an interpretation board in situ to give visitors the origins and background and to their unusual names. The volunteer community gardeners hope you will respect all the gardens in the town. They tend these on a regular basis so that the chosen plants and not the weeds continue to flourish for everyone’s enjoyment. As it is a never ending task newcomers are always welcome to join them. Rights of a father in separation or divorce? In most situations, when a relationship comes to an end it will be in the best interests for any children to still maintain contact with both parents. In an ideal situation, both the father and the mother will be able to agree the amount of contact without the courts involvement, however, if this cannot be agreed the courts will intervene. A father has a right to contact with their children and the court deem the parents the best people to make the decision regarding how much contact each parent should have. The only exception to this would be in specific cases where previous behaviour on the part of a parent may indicate otherwise. There are no rules regarding the minimum amount of contact that the father is entitled to, with many families choosing to allow the father contact one night a week and alternative weekends (Friday through to Sunday). This is obviously determined in line with what suits the family best and considerations such as the mother and fathers working hours and distance from each other need to be factored into account. What if an agreement can’t be reached? In instances where the amount of contact cannot be agreed, getting guidance from a Family Law solicitor may be necessary and doing this is a recommended first step. The court may insist on both parents attending mediation in order for an agreement to be reached. However, in the event mediation cannot take place, or is unsuccessful and the courts need to determine how much contact a father should have, this can be far more complex with a number of factors having to be considered. It is at this point that any explicit wishes of the child may be taken into consideration, subject to the age/maturity of the child. The father’s role in making decisions Regardless of the amount of contact the father has each week with the child/children, if the father has parental responsibility then the father is still legally entitled to be involved in key decisions about the child’s future, for example, the choice of school or where they should receive medical care. These decisions would need to be made jointly alongside the mother who would also have parental responsibility. In most situations of divorce or separation proceedings, a father will have parental responsibility. This includes where the mother and father were married, or if they were not married but the father is named on the birth certificate and the child was born after 1st December 2003. Hadleigh Swimming Club News What a busy start to the Summer it has been at the club. We have taken part in the second round of the Suffolk ASA Summer League held this time at Bury St Edmunds. We had a mixed bag of results but some impressive performances in the relays – well done team and good luck to those of you competing in the Grand Final in Ipswich later this month. Also at Ipswich, around twenty of our swimmers competed at the Suffolk ASA Development meet – a chance for those swimmers aiming for County times to shine. The meet was very competitive with some extremely close-run races. Through hard work and a determined mindset, we achieved some great performances with personal best times crushed and a clutch of seventeen medals. This month also sees a number of our members and their families taking part in The Great East Swim. This fantastic event features races over a number of distances and attracts open water swimmers from across the region. All the best to our Dolphins and fingers crossed for a warm and sunny day.

Our walk on Saturday 14th July will start and end at Bures. The walk is quite a long one but well worth the effort. Called locally “The Dragon Walkâ€? it is one of our favourites. Our route from Bures will be Fysh House Farm, Highfields Farm, Dead Lane Track to Farthing Hall, the St Edmunds Way to Wissington and back to Bures on the Stour Valley Path via Wormingford. The route is about 11 miles and we will take it easy to admire the views. We will have at least one stop so we suggest you bring a small snack and definitely something to drink if the weather looks like being hot. The walk will take around 4½ hours so we should be back at the cars by around 2pm. We will meet at 0930 in the Bures village hall car park on Nayland Road which is a sharp left turn where High Street becomes Bridge Street. The car park is a short distance down Nayland Road on the RHS. Email me for a map. If anyone needs a lift from Hadleigh please email me and I’ll try my best to put you in touch with a driver. If there are any changes to the route following our recce they will be put up on the website. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Independent Builders’ Merchant Collier & Catchpole knows a thing or two about what builders want and that includes the fact that its customers’ daily routine would not be quite the same without a cup of tea or two. So when it came to thinking of some branded gifts to thank its regular visitors to its wellstocked yards in Colchester and Ipswich, it was not so much a matter of thinking “outside the box” but more about thinking “in the bag”. Collier & Catchpole has business roots in East Anglia, going back almost 200 years and so when identifying a partner to help them create a “Builders’ Brew”, the obvious choice was another local family business which has been around as long as Colliers. Butterworth & Son , the specialist coffee roasters and suppliers of fine teas, based in Bury St Edmunds, have family history as Tea Smiths going back to 19th century and are known for quality blended teas. Collier & Catchpole contacted Rosie Mills-Smith, Operations Manager at Butterworth & Son who was excited about the prospect of doing a branded project: “Although this type of order is not our mainstream business, as a company we are keen and committed to work with other local organisations that employ local people with a proven track record of high standards.” Rosie recommended the “Suffolk Special Blend” as the ideal base for the “Builders Brew” as it has a strong and full flavour and is blended for hard water, common in the east of England because of the geology of the landscape. Andy McMahon, Collier & Catchpole’s Commercial Manager is delighted with the end result: “Everyone loves the tea - so much so that we are in danger of running out of mugs! With so many of our customers on site rather than behind a desk, it is great to be able to give them something they can enjoy wherever they are.” colliercatchpole.co.uk Colchester 01206 715500 Ipswich 01473 689605

Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance would like to say a huge thank you to the wonderful community of Hadleigh who supported Dementia Action Week 2018. Our incredible team of volunteers were spotted all around Hadleigh, standing under a very chilly tree at the Hadleigh Show, who for the third year running have been supporting the work of the HDAA working to become a dementia friendly event. It was wonderful to see so many return faces from 2017 including Oscar our 2017 winner for the tallest sunflower grown. Will his little green fingers be as lucky this year! You can post your sunflowers progress on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/hadleighdementiafriends/ The Together Tuesday group had a wonderful tea dance at the Ansell Community Centre, supported by the talented Bruce Lait they danced the afternoon away. The Paddy & Scotts business breakfast supported local businesses to become dementia friendly. The Ansell Memories Café offered a wonderful lunch and afternoon of activities. Supporting families to live well with dementia. On Friday, the Market Place was the place to find the team planting more sunflowers and offering advice on how to live well with dementia. A big thank you to the Royal British Legion for hosting the HDAA quiz night, which was a fun family event with lots of prizes to be won at the wonderful raffle. The final events of the week were coffee and cake mornings at Magdalene House and Kingsbury and Saunders Funeral Directors. There were certainly plenty of tasty treats to enjoy. Your kind donations during this time amounted to £278.11. Thank you for your generosity. Working together to become a dementia friendly Hadleigh. If you would like to get involved and become a dementia friend or dementia friendly business, you can contact Tracey at: hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk / 01473 823470
Hadleigh Healing Society We have all been experiencing the high and the lows of the World Cup, Wimbledon, Rugby, races at Ascot and Goodwood. An over indulgence of sport, one might say. Others say “I cannot wait to get back to normal” Whatever your view it has given us something else to talk about besides the weather and Brexit. Some people find it very difficult to get enthusiastic about anything. Everything looks very grey and bleak in their life. Spare a thought for these people. Our healers try to help those who feel isolated and depressed. We have not always got all the answers to a particular problem but we do listen. Knowing someone who will listen to you helps so much when you cannot help yourself. If you feel like this ring for an appointment 01473 823282 (answer machine) or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org and let us listen to you.

Bees & Beekeeping: It’s hard to imagine holding an audience’s attention for 40+ minutes while speaking about bees and beekeeping. How wrong can you be, pardon the pun? Bee keeper, Abigail Read, did just that and more. Her talk was so interesting that members’ questions continued long after it had ended. Abigail brought lots of explanatory props including a sealed, sample hive full of bees. This made it much easier to understand the colony’s layout and hierarchy. The revered queen bee lays an inordinate number of eggs each day, the rank and file female bees spend most of their time cleaning, and nurturing the young. The male bees’ only function, before dying, is to mate with the queen outside the hive. Happily, human society has moved on considerably since then. Abigail was assisted by her son, Reece, and mother, Avril, who brought a wonderful display of their etched wood art work or pyrography, for members to buy. It was a fascinating evening giving us a true insight into these amazing creatures and the unusual attraction of being a beekeeper. AGMs can often be full of business and not a lot of pleasure. Fortunately, the Fidelis annual event is the reverse. At their recent gathering, the members confirmed that they were content to let the existing Committee continue to take care of club business for another year. Chairwoman, Liz Wilson welcomed Jill Howlett as a new co-opted member. Brief reports were given by the Chairwoman, the Publicity and Programme Organiser, Jan Devey, and the Treasurer, Carole Burne. On behalf of the members, Val Scott gave a vote of thanks to the Committee for all their hard work which had resulted in most varied, interesting and enjoyable past year. Having speedily dispensed with the business members tucked into a Ploughman’s Supper provided by the Angels Delight team, Charlotte and Becky. Wit, humour and pure nostalgia followed when after dinner speaker, Brian Carline, took to the floor. His talk ‘Tripe and Trotters’ stirred up many memories and a great deal of laughter. Closing the AGM Liz thanked everyone for attending and looked forward to another successful club year. Lunch Bunch: Our venue came recommended by a Fidelis member so expectations were high before we even arrived at The Gallery Restaurant at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club. We were not disappointed in either the food or location. The panoramic windows high above the golf course gave us breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Diners tried the Medana Lunch Buffet which had a distinctly Mediterranean flavour with many hot and cold dishes in that style. It’s a simple format; one plate and one visit to the buffet for £9.95. Homemade soup of the day and dessert will add another £5.95 and £5.75 respectively, to your bill. There was also plenty of time to put the world to rights while enjoying the delicious cuisine. JD

Hadleigh Physio now offering Kids and Teens Pilates Many people associate Pilates only with adults, but this exercise regime is ideal for kids and teens of both genders and all ages! It is proven that physical activity in children helps prevent obesity, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression and ultimately improve musculoskeletal and bone health. There is a wealth of benefits that can be gained from regular Pilates sessions, even if the child in question is already active. If they aren’t, Pilates can help get them in the habit of exercising regularly. SPORTY KIDS: Children and teens who play sports that involve extreme flexibility or range of movement will benefit from Pilates e.g. hockey, football, tennis, rowing and swimming. Strengthening their bodies can help prevent or recover more quickly from injury. DANCING KIDS: The foundation of Pilates was based on use with dancers and the exercise routine is ideal to add to any dancer or gymnast’s repertoire, adding strength and balance. If your child or teen is into ballet, hip hop, tap, modern or other dance styles, Pilates could be a perfect addition to improve performance. INACTIVE KIDS: Children and teens who don’t have a sport or other active hobby might find the perfect option is Pilates. Pilates can be useful to encourage movement and flexibility, improve posture as a break from studying or more sedentary past times. It will help strengthen muscles, improve balance and posture and enhance self-discipline. Hadleigh Physio will be running taster sessions for infants (4-7 years), Juniors (7-11 years) and seniors (11-16 years) throughout the month of August. Groups of no more than 4 will be run by a qualified physiotherapist in our studio on George Street and will then be given the opportunity to join a timetable of regular classes commencing in the Autumn. Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029
Now that’s something you don’t see every day. Maisie, the springer and I were meeting the lovely people at Lush Cosmetics in Ipswich because they were donating profits from their Charity Pot cream to SESAW. Suddenly we saw a human striding through the precinct with a tall contraption strapping to his back. Apparently it was the Google Earth guy, mapping the precinct with a 360 ħ camera. And I thought he was there just to photograph me! Mind you, Maisie and I were soon the centre of attention again but I really didn’t know where to look when she rolled on her back for tummy tickles. That dog is SO embarrassing! I should explain about Maisie. She arrived at SESAW one Christmas, in great pain, hardly able to walk. Luckily our talented vet was able to correct a birth defect on her legs. She patiently endured a long recovery period, remaining calm as her dressings were changed and licking everyone who cared for her. Two years later our Spaniel enjoys life, goes for short walks and loves nothing better than a squeaky toy. Our volunteers are looking forward to attending the Eight Ash Green Music Festival on 21st July and then it’s all systems go for our own Open Day and Fun Dog Show, 12 - 4 pm on Sunday 29th July at the Sanctuary. Lots to see, do and eat plus entertainment from HUG - the Hadleigh Ukulele Group! We are still in need of raffle prizes for this, our happiest day of the year. Please join us, you might even see me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare, Reg.Charity No.1124029, Stoke Road, Leavenheath, CO6 4PP, tel: 01787 210888 www.sesaw.co.uk

The Chiropractic Clinic Sudbury Dr Eilidh Maher first decided to follow a career in chiropractic after becoming interested in the benefit that it gave to her and her family when she was younger. She initially completed a degree in Economics but later re-trained as a Chiropractor at the Anglo European Chiropractic College in Bournemouth. Eilidh began her career in a Sudbury based clinic in 2009 and worked there for 8 years. In September of last year, she set up on her own, establishing The Chiropractic Clinic Sudbury. The clinic is located within the South Suffolk Business Centre, off Alexandra Road in Sudbury. The new premises offers good car parking and accessibility for all. There is a bright and welcoming reception area where you will be greeted by one of her friendly receptionists. At the clinic, we welcome everyone from infants suffering with colic to all ages upwards. We offer treatments for a range of musculoskeletal problems including, joint pain, headaches, sciatica and sports injuries. We look forward to welcoming you to our clinic! "I have suffered from chronic migraine for the past three years. Having tried numerous migraine medications in hope something would relieve my symptoms and getting no where, my life was getting morbidly desperate. Having migraine so severely sometimes kept me in bed for days, not being able to eat or keep any food down and trying to work around them has been almost impossible....until I met Eilidh Maher. This lady has literally changed my life! I call her 'my angel.' When migraine strikes, I visit Eilidh at her Chiropractic surgery with the worst symptoms and I can honestly say I walk out without them!....I cannot recommend Eilidh, highly enoughâ€?. Tidy Town Update Due to snow in March, the Tidy Town Volunteers had to postpone the Great British Spring Clean. We thought the weekend following the Hadleigh Show, the Royal Wedding, FA Cup Final, and two nights of extended drinking hours and partying, would be a good time. So from 22-27 May, there were two hour picks every day. We covered all areas of Hadleigh that we usually cover in a month during that week, as well as two nearby lay-bys, where we have found a lot of fly-tipping. The Great British Spring Clean event was great! The weather was fantastic and we had at least six volunteers every day. We collected twelve sacks of rubbish, reported items of fly-tipping, retrieved nine traffic cones from the river, washed picnic tables and swept recycling area. We ended the week's picks with a walk in Wolves Wood, which was very enjoyable and pleased to report we did not find a single piece of rubbish! We enjoyed our après pick socials in the sunshine. Grateful thanks to all who came on the picks and to those who provided refreshments. During a pick of Cox's park on 1 June, we found a purse and a pair of crutches which were taken to Hadleigh Police Station. Anita Young (Co-ordinator)

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice Sudbury & District Citizens Advice is delighted to announce that outreach sessions in Hadleigh will continue for a further year up to end June 2019 thanks to additional funding received from Suffolk Community Foundation through the Suffolk Rural Fund. The outreach sessions take place at the Ansell Centre on the first Thursday of the month between 9.30am and 12.30pm and the next advice session will be Thurs 7 June. Colleen Sweeney, Chief Officer said “this is wonderful news. These sessions have been hugely successful in helping individuals who may otherwise have struggled to get to the main office in Sudbury. We are very grateful to the continued support from the Ansell Centre for allowing these sessions to take place.

As historic building specialists, we offer sympathetic & honest restoration & conservation services in the following areas:
Health Foods for You Zero Waste Project We are living within an outdated linear economy of production, consumption and disposal. The zero waste mentality is to switch the whole system to a circular economy, which aims on keeping things in continuous rotation and out of landfill. This isn’t to be confused with the recycling economy, which delays the journey to landfill, but winds up there eventually after using lots of energy and resources to keep it in use until then. At Health Foods For You we have a selection of organic loose, self-serve products for you to choose from. This includes grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruit and loose-leaf teas. Why organic? We believe organic farming is the natural way and ‘organic food’ should in fact just be called ‘food’, so rest assured that everything sold in the Zero waste dispensers is organic How it works in our shop STEP 1. Place any empty container on the scales STEP 2. Fill your container with desired product. STEP 3. Place the container back onto the scale. We work out your price, then pay for your product! We are huge advocates of reusing over recycling so please bring along any container that you like; a mason jar, jam jar, ice cream tub or lunchbox, if it can be weighed, it can be used! If ever you forget to bring a container of your own, feel free to use one of our biodegradable bags. If you are new to the zero-waste experience and selfserving in general, please don’t hesitate to ask for assistance and we can show you how effortless it is to take back control of your food, getting the amount you need. Shopping this way is simple to do, empowering to you, the customer, and fun for the whole family to get involved in. This certiďŹ cate is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis, 68 High St, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF.
James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk “At this time of year South Suffolk really does explode into vibrant natural splendour. It’s the open gardens season, with flora and fauna to the fore, and a chance for all of us to enjoy Suffolk at its best. A personal favourite is heading off on my bike along narrow rural backroads, to have the immense pleasure of seeing a hare or two scampering ahead in the distance. Then there is the still open water of the Stour, where whole stretches lull along seemingly unchanged from when Constable painted there. The constituency is spoilt for choice if you want to sample the best of the open gardens tradition. It would be remiss of me to pick a favourite, though I understand Chelsworth is one of the longest running in the whole country. But I do very much admire those who go to such trouble to throw open their home turf for people to marvel at from far and wide. On the matter of fauna, I am delighted to be the RSPB Parliamentary Species Champion of the Turtle Dove. This migrant species, once a staple of Suffolk’s summer skyline, has declined by more than 95% across the UK since 1970, partly as the unavoidable result of changes in farming methods. I recently attended an RSPB visit in Boxford to see the work that a local farmer is doing to provide improved habitats to try to tempt these birds to land and nest in our area. The reversal of species decline, as with the majority of the issues facing our country, depends on heightened awareness, particularly in terms of educating the next generation. Therefore, I was pleased to donate an owl box – kindly made for me by a talented RSPB volunteer - to Bentley Primary School on the launch day of their Beast, Birds and Bugs club. Beyond education, the protection of our wildlife relies on action at national and international levels. As such, I was delighted that the Government recently banned the sale of ivory products in the UK, a crucial step towards ensuring the future of one of the world’s most endangered animals.”

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre This time last year, dear readers, we appealed for your votes in the Masonic Charitable Foundation’s big launch. Thanks to the wonderful response from you, your friends and relations and a world wide ‘plug’ on every social media ap. imaginable, we were the fortunate winners of the maximum grant in this region. So much work has already been carried out as a result of this, and last of all will come the resurfacing of the arena. We are ever grateful to the Foundation, and to all our wonderful Shelley supporters. I’m sorry to hear that rabbits have begun vandalising some of Mr Chisnell’s ground works already. The cocky little pests are quite a problem. Fancy something so small being able to dig down to the hardcore below the nice surface of the yard, and bring up rocks for the ponies to tread on! Does anyone have advice for our maintenance team that would help stop this invasion? We do enjoy a lot of wild life here, but the bunnies are too numerous to be loved. The stables have had doves nesting in them this year, but fewer swallows. There is a good line in horse flies (not loved), bees (in the wild flower patch) and kestrels (above us). I don’t see it all from my room of course, but I hear the gossip. This year our Shelley Show took a different turn: the dressage section was ridden on the afternoon or Tuesday 12th June, leaving Sunday 24th June entirely devoted to The Countryside Challenge. My photos show Dawid setting off to do his dressage test looking extremely smart, and Ruth putting Bob through his paces. Look for more show pictures in my August blog! If you live near enough to Bury St Edmunds do visit our stand at the Festival Fun Day in Nowton Park on Sunday 22nd July. It promises a ‘day of fun for all the family” from 11 o’clock onwards, with lots of entertainment and things to do. Hopefully there will a photo of yours truly on our publicity board too. New local estate agency Hizzy could save you thousands in fees!! Hello my name is Lee and I am the director of South Suffolk’s newest and most innovative estate agent Hizzy. I have been involved in the local property market for around the past 20 years. In coming up with the idea for the business we knew we needed to offer something a bit different as there is already plenty of estate agents doing the same thing, so we wanted to design a local estate agency with traditional values combined with enhanced modern online marketing and much lower, transparent selling fees. We wanted to retain core values associated with a traditional estate agent style of service such as face to face contact and real local market knowledge, but we also felt we needed more superior online marketing and simpler easy to understand selling fees. Obviously, this concept is not new, with bigger national companies doing the same thing, but we feel because we are operating within our local area and with 20 years local experience we could offer something extra to our customers. With consumer buying habits changing, more and more people are choosing the online route as their primary search tool for anything these days, this is also very much the case with searching for a new home with statistics showing 98% of buyers are starting their search online first with less than 2% choosing to go into a High Street shop, therefore we believe the requirement for a High Street shop front is now not as essential as it once was 10 years ago. We have therefore come up with the concept of a hybrid style estate agency service which utilizes the best elements from both a High Street and online estate agent which comes together to offer a more streamlined, transparent and service driven approach with much lower selling fees. The ways in which we have achieved this are by removing elements from a High Street agent style of service that we consider are no longer required such as a High Street shop front, instead choosing to work from a local office, the savings we make from this are then passed on to our customers through our lower selling fees. We want to embrace the power of online marketing through various ways including better social media advertising and online presentation. We also felt we needed to be open for longer as we felt a lot of potential buyers were carrying out their research between 6pm and 9pm and at weekends, this is when most traditional agents are closed, so our opening times are from 8am to 9pm 7 days a week and with 24 hr customer support. Our selling contracts are also just 30 days and not the normal 3 months. We are members of the National Association of Estate Agents and therefore work to a professional standard so if you are thinking of selling and would like a free valuation or just advice on a potential move then please get in touch on 01473 875101, hello@hizzyproperty.co.uk or visit our website for live web chat at www.hizzyproperty.co.uk.

Rotary Review CLUB EVENTS: At the Club meeting on 12 June, President David Stokes presented cheques to Eileen Damant of Sound On and Val Parmenter of Hadleigh Optimists. Sound On runs the Ipswich talking newspaper for the blind and those with serious loss of sight whilst Hadleigh Optimists provides a social club for the blind and partially sighted (see accompanying photo of the two ladies with Kate Sands in the middle). The donations were made in memory of Mike Sands, a past president of the Club, a member for 15 years and prior to that a member of Rotary Clubs in Yorkshire. Sadly, Mike passed away in January this year and Kate, Mike's widow, requested that donations from the celebration of his life be sent to the Club's charitable trust fund for onward transmission to appropriate charities. After close consultation with Kate three main charities were chosen - the two just mentioned and Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding where it was decided to donate a bench with a memorial plaque (pictured) dedicated to Mike who was a keen supporter whilst Kate is a dedicated volunteer at the Centre. Finally a small residual amount was given to the Rotary Club as we believe Mike would have wished. CLUB ACTIVITIES: 1 The Annual General Meeting took place in April and a change of officers for Rotary Year 2018/19 was agreed. Due to ill health Richard Whiting asked to be relieved of the post of President and stepped down to Vice President with Vice President Elect, Linda Humphries taking over the position of President Elect. She will formally take over on 1 July. At this meeting also President David reviewed his year so far highlighting the record Christmas collection and the very successful 40th Charter Anniversary Lunch. 2 A number of members and partners spent an enjoyable morning boating along the River Stour from Sudbury to Henny where the group disembarked to have lunch at the Swan and were joined by two or three more people for the meal. The morning journey was accompanied by a chilly wind blowing up river but the sun came out for the return journey providing a very pleasant ending to an excellent outing. The main interest on the river journey was the negotiation of Cornard lock when the two volunteers from the River Stour Trust who manned the boat had to work very hard to get the boat through. Thanks go to the River Stour Trust volunteers and the staff of the Henny Swan for looking after us so well. MEMBERSHIP: the Club is still seeking new members and anyone who is interested in finding good fellowship, good food and the opportunity to serve your local community is welcome to attend a meeting to find out more.Meetings are lunchtime at Kings Head on 2nd Tuesday and 4th Thursday each month. Please contact David 01473 827226.

Hadleigh Steering Group All are welcome to attend the Steering Group meetings, whether you are part of a community group or an individual, we are non-political, and we meet on the first Monday of the month, unless it is a bank holiday. We discuss matters that affect our town so it is an opportunity to find out what is going on in Hadleigh and a chance to share your opinions. Our next meeting will be held on 2nd July 2018 at 4:15pm at the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre. The meeting will be chaired by Cllr. Jan Byrne and the guest speaker will be Tracy Loynes who will provide an update on planned developments for Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Cllr. Byrne will also give a talk on ‘Living in a Listed Building.’ Summary of the Meeting held on 4 June 2018, chaired by Anita Young. Guest Speaker: Mike Keeling, Footpath Warden. Mike and Hugh Aldrich monitor and maintain 28 miles of footpaths in and around Hadleigh, the Town Council providing the equipment. The footpaths are the responsibility of landowners and they occasionally come under threat for various reasons, e.g. electric/fencing, locked gates, etc and the Footpath Wardens deal with these issues. If they should be ploughed over, there is a time limit by which they must be re-established. Mike advised the best way to maintain the footpaths was to walk them, which they do regularly. There are organised walks for the Hadleigh Walkers, the second Saturday in the month. The walks are usually for 8-12 miles, never less than 5 miles, and they sometimes bus one way. They meet at the Stonehouse car park at 9:30am. There is a charge of £1, which is donated to charity. The walks are advertised in the Hadleigh Community News or www.hadleighwalkers.com or email hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 0785 895 5678. Guest Speaker: Ben Day, Youth Worker, The Porch Project Ben is one of three full-time Youth Workers and advised us of the projects and facilities offered to young people. They now have a Youth Centre in Hadleigh High Street, occupying eight rooms, including a music room, computer room, creative and social spaces etc. There are Focus programmes offering support, Mentoring and other programmes to help build self-esteem and well-being etc. Ben says, “Here at the Porch Project things have been steadily building and growing, especially since January 2018. We now serve over 650 young people in Hadleigh, Great Cornard and surrounding areas. What comes with this growth is our need for more resources and support to run all of our activities and programmes. We are currently seeking a volunteer minibus driver and possible minibus to use; local business support for our Horizons programme that offers young people a snapshot of different sectors to inspire

If you think you may have skills that could benefit the young people in our community, then please do not hesitate to get in touch at: youthworker1@porchproject.co.uk Ben Day, Youthwork Coordinator, The Porch Project” Tidy Town: There is an update in the July Hadleigh Community News following the recent Great British Spring Clean weekend event. It was pointed out that the Minutes of the June Steering Group were incorrect in that the five sacks of rubbish and fly-tipping items were not collected from Wolves Wood picnic area, but from the lay-by near Wolves Wood. There was no litter at all found in Wolves Wood on a recent pick. Music Festival: The event is being advertised in the Hadleigh Community News and ‘In Touch’ magazines. There will also be a beer festival in the same week, providing rock music. The music events of the Festival are diverse and will provide something for everyone. Website: Although this is going well, funding is needed for a You-Tube channel, which would be hugely beneficial, which will cost £90 per month. The new business, the ‘Jet Lounge’ restaurant is benefiting from the Website. Hanging Baskets: 57 flower baskets are now hanging in the High Street. The baskets are different from those used last year, having a reservoir. A generous donation has been received which has enabled the funding of regular watering throughout the summer so they will last much longer. Hadleigh Town Council: Cllr. Jan Byrne stated that it was business as usual at the Town Council, despite the problems (two more councillors having recently resigned and the upcoming Parish Poll calling for a vote of no confidence in the Town Council). Cllr. Byrne stated that whatever the outcome of the Parish Poll, she would not resign and that some other councillors had confirmed to her that they would not resign either. The question of the cost of the Parish Poll arose and the Chair advised that Babergh DC had confirmed the cost would be around £3,000. Hadleigh Legacy Group: The bunting will not be put up in the High Street this year. Some of it is being been hired for functions, which helps to provide an income for the Group. The Town Guides are offering tours, which have to be booked: ‘Hadleigh History,’ ‘Miss Lawrence Goes Shopping’ and ‘Walking With Trees’ (which was conducted during the recent Suffolk Walking Festival). The community gardeners have been working hard and the gardens and plants have been much admired, particularly the Cedric Morris Irises. More volunteers are needed. Patients Participation Group: There will be an awareness week and popup stands around the town during September, providing information about the Group, changes to patient services and how patients can reduce the pressure and cost to the NHS. An example, advising on the minor ailments that can be dealt with by Pharmacists and how to avoid the costs of wasted medications. The next meeting will be held on 2nd July 2018 at 4:15pm at the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre. The meeting will be chaired by Cllr. Jan Byrne

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Medication - Only Order What You Need Did you know? Even if you never open them, once you leave a pharmacy your medicines cannot be recycled or used by anyone else. This means that any you return are destroyed. Before heading to the pharmacy, take a look in your medicine cabinet to see what you actually need. You may have ordered extra on a repeat prescription last time you went and forgot. If your GP prescribes medication for you, make sure you are taking it correctly. Unused or misused medications such as antibiotics can lead to worsening health conditions and more treatments. By doing your part and only ordering what you need you are helping to reduce the cost of wasted medicines, which means these savings could be put towards other health services. Only order the medicines that you need • Please let your GP know if you’ve stopped taking any of your medicines • Check what medicines you still have at home before re-ordering • Discuss your medication with your GP or Pharmacist on a regular basis • Think carefully before ticking all the boxes on your repeat prescription forms and only tick those that you really need • If you don’t need the medicine, please don’t order it. • If you need to go into hospital, please remember to take all your medicines with you in a clearly marked bag • Please also remember that your medicines are prescribed only for you. It’s not safe to share them with anyone else Remember that unused medicines cannot be recycled • Even if you never open them, once medicines have left the Pharmacy, they cannot be recycled or used by anyone else • Please take your unused medicines to the Pharmacy for safe disposal • NEVER dispose of your unused or unwanted medicines down the toilet Unused medicines are a safety risk • Return out of date medicines to your Pharmacy or Dispensary for safe disposal • If your medicines change – return your old medicines to the Pharmacy to avoid mixing them up with your new medicines • Don’t stockpile medication – it is a safety risk for children and others who might take them • Store medicines in an appropriate place out of reach of children Wasted medicines waste money Unused prescription medicines cost the NHS across the UK over £300 million every year We are actively seeking new members. Squirrels (Reception) Squirrels arrived back at school to find that a dinosaur had left an egg in our classroom! We have been taking care of the egg creating a nest and looking carefully to see when (and if!) it will ever hatch! We will continue to learn facts about dinosaurs and create our own class nonfiction book. We have also started our Forest School sessions at Bridges Farm this half term. Already the children have enjoyed creating bows and arrows, building dens and hunting for bugs. Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) Hedgehogs have had a busy start to the summer. On Mondays we are taking part in Forest Schools sessions at Bridge's farm. We have had great fun so far building dens; making bows and arrows; and looking for minibeasts. Our topic this half term is 'Oceans and Seas'. On Wednesday 13th June we went to Harwich and visited the lighthouses, the fort and the RNLI lifeboat station. We also enjoyed some time on the beach where we collected shells, made sand castles and even turned ourselves into mermaids! To link in with our topic we have been learning the names of the world's oceans, learning about some famous explorers and we even made our own lighthouses. We are looking forward to our upcoming pirate day later this term, where we are going to dress up and take part in lots of pirate activities! Badgers (Years 3 and 4) Vive la France!!! We have had great fun in researching and learning about the French Revolution by using both the internet and knowledge that some of us already had.In DT we are developing our designing skills by using both wood and cardboard to create a working toy. As a class we are excited for our Arts Festival at the end of June. We will be showcasing our ukulele skills, as well as performing 'Touch the Sky' from Brave. We have chosen that song as it talks about empowering yourself and chasing your dream no matter how big or small it is. In our Literacy lesson we are writing our own adventure stories, but the catch is they can only be 100 words long. However the winners of this competition will be published in a real book! Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class have spent this week on their residential at ‘African Adventure’ where they have taken part in a huge range of activities. They have all had a fantastic week. Hadleigh Evening WI At our June meeting of the W.I. we were delighted to welcome Clare Lock who spoke to us about, "Hat Making". We were also pleased to welcome two visitors who had come along with Clare's mother to enjoy the talk. Apparently, a hat maker makes hats only for men and a milliner , makes hats for women. Clare formed her own company, "The Suffolk Hat Company", about 20 years ago and she currently has about 300 hats and 200 fascinators in her collection. She is in process of moving at the moment but she will shortly be operating from her new house in Polstead. To begin making a hat, Clare uses a hat block (an expensive item) to form the shape. She has several hat blocks and they each produce a different design of hat. Apparently, about 70% of hats these days are made from a rough, gauzy material called cinnamay. Clare likes to use three layers to give a stronger colour and she sometimes combines different colours to produce a more exciting effect. She also uses other materials, such as, felt or cronolin and she even brought along a very interesting fascinator made from records. She made this by pouring boiling water onto the vinyl and moulding it until she had the desired shape. To embellish her hats, Clare mostly uses all sorts of feathers, some of which she dyes herself. She then showed us a few techniques that she uses to make the feathers take on a different look or style. She also makes her own lilies from material to decorate the hats and she, very generously, gave us each a kit and instructions to make our own lily. Clare also gave us each a hand out portraying various shapes of faces and giving advice on which shape of hat looked best with each face. She then gave us a number of tips on how to choose, how to wear and how to look after our hat. Even how to make it fit better. Meanwhile, Clare's customers have bought hats for Royal Garden Parties, Royal Ascot and she has also sold hats to a number of military wives. A very enjoyable talk that left us feeling that hats are quite special. We will be enjoying our annual Garden Party at the beginning of July and the talk at our meeting on the 17th, July will be about, "Memory Lanes Tunes of the Forties & Fifties". New members are always welcome. Rae Stapleton

Burstall’s Flower Show, Fete & Dog Show Saturday 4th August The Americans are Coming! On Saturday 4th August Burstall will be hosting a party of Americans at their 65th Annual Show. The group from Missouri will be rounding off their holiday in England with a little bit of rural, Suffolk culture in the form of this very traditional village show. The format of Burstall’s show has hardly changed since the 1950s although bowling for the pig and the smell from the goats have gone! What is still to be enjoyed are the displays of garden produce, baking, flower arranging and craft in the marquee. The fete includes the ever-popular coconut shy and tombola, races and tug of war and this year there will be entertainment from the Ipswich Hospital Band, West Trafalgar Morris Dancers and Punch and Judy. Burstall’s catering comes highly recommended with a lunchtime salad buffet, cream teas and lots of homemade cake served in the village hall plus an alfresco barbecue. With a Fun Dog Show too this is definitely an afternoon out for all the family including the dog! Loads of free parking and no entry fee. Lunches will be served from noon and entertainment from 1.30 pm in Burstall IP8 3DR. More info on www.burstall.onesuffolk.net

Walter Wright Kersey Mill Newsletter Over the past month there has been no let-up in the activities in and around Kersey Mill. We have been delighted with the number of visitors that have been to view the mill and to see the work in progress that is ongoing and to support the various open days. Many thanks to all that have helped with events, Kersey Open Gardens was very well attended and Woofers Team produced a fun Dog Day that was enjoyed by many. Funds raised were split between Canine Partners and Friends of Kersey Mill. Many thanks to all that supported, sponsored and helped with the event. With the lovely summer days, we have been able to continue with the repairs to the mill grindstones. Paul Willis of Armour Engineering has removed the remains of the centre spindles and is in the process of making replacement parts and repairing anything that is salvageable. We recently replaced the temporary galvanised rods that had been used on the front scarfed joints created from new oak to repair the Hurst. It is incredible how badly the oak has already corroded the rod, this underlines why we need to use stainless-steel that is now in place. Once the grindstones have been repaired Millwright, Bill Griffiths, and his helpers will lift the bed stones back onto the Hurst Frame in readiness for redressing. More on this part of the restoration will follow shortly.
Contented Dementia? Constant media coverage of the escalating numbers of people affected by dementia and itsimpact on people's lives creates fear and anxiety. Many of those involved feel that there is little that can be done to help: even if medication can temporarily delay the worst of the symptoms, the only course appears to be to ‘hope for the best’, but with little idea of how that can be achieved. But people affected by dementia can be helped to live a life free of distress if those caring for them understand how the world looks to the person with dementia. The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance is offering two opportunities to find out more on Saturday 1st September. The Contented Dementia approach is based on an innovative way of understanding dementia from the point of view of the person with the condition. We explain this using a simple analogy - the SPECAL Photograph Album - which everyone coming into contact with the person with dementia needs to understand. “It’s such a relief to know that everyone understands and feels positive about what we can all do if we work together.” This approach can slow the rate of deterioration and enable people to function without drugs, to remain in their own homes for significantly longer, and to avoid the distress all too often seen during the transition into another care setting. “I had such a happy time with my father because I had an understanding of what it is like to have dementia. It was inspiring to know that he wouldn’t end his life in a miserable sedated state.” Come and find out more on the 1st September at the Guildroom in Hadleigh's Guildhall: 12.30 - 1pm - A short open meeting to hear about the Contented Dementia approach; 1.30 - 4.30 - A free workshop for family carers and care staff to learn more about the approach Please contact the HDAA on 07522 935179 or hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk to book your place on the workshop - Put a note in your diary now!

Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson Oh the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, with Wimbledon, Hadleigh Community Choir Summer Concert and scones with strawberry jam. Support your local market stall by buying fresh fruit on Friday morning. And do support the July music festival in Hadleigh, with a variety of events. Any excuse for a scone! Strawberry Jam (Makes approximately 3 large jars (1lb or 454g) Ingredients 1½ lbs or 750g strawberries, 1½ lbs or 750g granulated sugar Juice of one lemon Method Wash the strawberries, remove stalks and tip into a large preserving pan. Add the lemon juice Place pan on a very low heat so juices run and fruit starts to soften. (Approx 10 – 15 mins) Remove from heat. Add the sugar, stirring gently till dissolved and mix doesn’t feel gritty. Return to heat, turning up fairly high. Bring fruit to the boil, stirring occasionally. Watch that it doesn’t boil over. If this looks likely, remove pan from heat immediately. Wash and rinse jars and warm them in a low oven. After about 20 mins, the jam will have darkened and thickened. Test it by placing a small amount on a cold saucer. If it ‘crinkles’ when pushed with your finger, it is ready. When the jam has reached setting point, turn off the heat. Remove jars from oven and place onto a board or heatproof surface. Leave to stand for 15 – 20 mins. If you put the jam in straight away, the fruit may rise to the top. Fill jars after standing time. Seal jars immediately and leave to cool overnight if possible. Spread lavishly on toast in the morning and enjoy your home-made success!

“The Big Crash Diet Experiment” On 30th May the BBC screened an impressive programme showing just how effective crash diets can be for improving several chronic health problems in a very short space of time. Cambridge Weight Plan is very proud that its products and weight loss Plan were used in this experiment. Professor Tony Leeds (our medical/obesity expert) worked closely with obesity Professor Susan Jebb throughout the research. The programme was filmed over 9 weeks last summer. Four determined slimmers took part, three lost well over their target of 2 stone each, the fourth losing almost 2 stone. Father Paul reversed his Diabetes Type 2 so he could be there to look after his wife and see his grandchildren grow up. He went on to lose a total of 5 stone! What an incredible achievement!! At her initial medical assessment, Tracey was in tears after being told she had the same risk of a heart attack as a 75-year old – she was 52 at the time. After 9 weeks she had knocked 18 years off that by losing 2.5 stone. Yolanda suffered from fatty liver disease but saw the fat in her liver reduced by 30% and the inflammation had almost disappeared. Rebecca, who considered herself a take-away addict lost almost 3 stone during the experiment, reducing her seriously high blood pressure to a normal level. They all used Cambridge Weight Plan’s 800 calories a day plan and, most importantly, four months later they had maintained their weight loss, or lost even more. They were all delighted with their results and new-found zest for life! Research has proven that slimmers are more successful with support. Average weight loss is a stone a month*. Are you suffering from low back pain? Low back pain is a very common health problem. Research shows that low back pain will affect 70-90% of the population at some stage in their lifetime. Low back pain is the leading cause of activity limitation and work absence throughout much of the world. Most low back pain will resolve itself in a few weeks or months. However there are some simple things to do to try to alleviate your pain and speed up the process: 1. Stay active – avoid prolonged postures, try to complete short walks and gentle stretches. 2. Minimise the activities or movements that aggravate your pain until the pain has settled. 3. Use heat to relieve any muscle spasm. It is important to seek help from your GP or Physiotherapist when: • The pain doesn’t start to improve within a few weeks • The pain stops you from doing your day-to-day activities • The pain is very severe or gets worse over time • You are worried about the pain or struggling to cope Physiotherapy can help by performing manual therapy such as massage and mobilisations to alleviate any muscle spasm and restore normal movement. Specific exercises will be prescribed based on a thorough assessment that will focus on your particular limitations and needs. Advise will also be given on how to best treat the cause of your low back pain and how to prevent reoccurrence Claire can be found at ‘A Touch of Beauty’ in Hadleigh on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Claire specialises in the treatment of all joint and muscle conditions, in particular lumbopelvic pain, sports injuries and womens health. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday June 11th 2018: Last month we were fortunate to have a speaker from the Beth Chatto garden in Elmstead Market Essex. David Ward's theme was 'making a drought resistant garden', he was giving the talk on behalf of the Beth Chatto Education Trust. David worked with Beth Chatto for thirty five years and was there from the very beginning of the now famous 'dry garden', created from an old car park. He stressed the importance of good preparation for the plants to have the best possible start. Beth Chatto was a great believer in 'right plant, right place' and plants that thrive in dry conditions need soil that is not too rich so he recommended breaking up the soil and digging in mushroom compost. When the ground has been prepared, the plants should be soaked in a bucket of water until all the air bubbles disappear, roots loosened and a third of them pruned off, the plant should be planted in a depression so they can be 'puddled in' and then the soil levelled and a mulch applied to retain moisture. The talk ended with the opportunity to take home some beautiful and unusual plants suited to dry conditions. The garden is not far away and if you haven't been yet it is well worth a visit. Congratulations to Margaret Jeffery who came first with her entry in the competition - 'one rose bloom', and the raffle went so well we ran out of tickets! Thankyou also to everyone who brought in plants for the sales table. Our next get together on Monday 9th July 2018: This month sees us celebrating our golden anniversary as Hadleigh & District Garden club is fifty years old this year. To mark the occasion we are having a special golden garden party in July at the home of one of our members, we are all very much looking forward to it and keeping our fingers crossed for a balmy evening to make the celebrations complete. We will be back at the Town Hall in August, more details next month.

Down to Earth ...with Dave We gardeners are a difficult lot to please. It is either too hot, cold, wet, or dry, never just right. At the moment it is a bit on the dry side with the numerous young plants needing frequent watering to keep them alive. No sooner have I said this than the heavens will open up giving everything a very welcome drenching. One advantage of a dry spell is that slugs and snails are less of a nuisance, but I am still out most nights with a torch and a pot of salty water gathering up any that dare to trespass onto to my beloved pots of hostas. The majority of the hostas are a bit protected as they are in a stand alone area away from any other plants. We have had some problems this summer with vine weevil and red lily beetle. The answer is to pick them off by hand where possible but a chemical spray or drench is used as a last resort. Why is the larvae of the attractive red lily beetle such a nasty messy thing? While it is dry keep hoeing the boarders and the veg plot. Any small weeds will soon die off in the sun. A good deep mulch will keep future weed growth down. If possible apply the mulch after rainfall or watering. On recent garden visits as part of the various open garden schemes it was surprising how many cordon grown tomato plants had side shoots growing away from the main stem. If not pinched out they can soon take over the plant and it becomes a wild mess. Bush grown plants do not need any side shoots pinched out but it is as well to limit the overall growth of the plant especially if it is growing in a basket. As soon as any fruits appear then the plants should be fed with a liquid tomato feed. Now is a good time to take cuttings of fuchsias and pelargoniums. Any fuchsia that is unluckily broken when being moved, is immediately converted into several small cuttings, trimmed below a leaf joint and planted up around the edge of a small pol of gritty compost. Pooped in the cold frame, kept moist it will soon grow into a new plant. If you have any young trees it pays to check their support ties as is it very easy for the tie to become over tight and this can cut into the tree trunk causing unsightly damage. We have two lots of fresh occupants moved onto a couple of empty very overgrown plots on the allotments near to mine. I remember several years ago when I first took over my rather neglected plot. At first it was a bit daunting, but with much hard work it is now almost a pleasure. My advice is stick at it and don’t try to do it all at once. Finally it was nice to see that Monty Don has been awarded an M.B.E in the Queens birthday honours list. About time someone down to earth got a mention. That’s all for now, Dave

The D.I.Y. Deli Hot-smoked Moroccan-style leg of lamb Essential equipment 1. A purpose made hot/cold smoker; widely available; typically charcoal fired under the Charbroil, Weber & Pro-Q logo, they retail from ÂŁ150-ÂŁ500; these appliances are not the same as a conventional BBQ; they cook at much lower temperatures because the heat source is some distance from the target food, and they feature a water bowl that prevents any drying out of the food product. If you don’t have a smoker this is a good excuse to invest; you won’t regret it. 2. A stainless steel container for your wood chips 3. A charcoal BBQ starter funnel; liquid fuels & firelighters are not a good idea. 4. A pestle & mortar or other device for grinding spices 5. If you plan to butterfly the leg of lamb yourself you will need a butcher’s saw (around ÂŁ80 from specialist suppliers) and a razor-sharp rigid knife for boning out; expect to pay around ÂŁ50 for the latter; herewith a link to how to do it; https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/videos/techniques/how-butterfly-leglambhttps://www.bbcgoodfood.com/videos/techniques/how-butterfly-leg-lamb; you won’t need the shank, so cut this off & freeze it for another day; the key criterion at the end of this process is to have an even thickness of meat. You might choose the cheat’s option & get your butcher to do it for you; nothing wrong with that & it will cost nothing. Important foodie information A 3 kg leg cooked in this way serves 10-12; once cooked it doesn’t survive freezing as moisture is lost in the thaw to leave a rather dry product which has lost some of its great flavour. If you plan to serve to fewer people cut the uncured meat into manageable size pieces & freeze the others, ideally vacuum packed. Ingredients (based on a 3kg leg; if using a smaller portion reduce each item pro-rata) 1 x 6lb Leg of lamb, 1 Tablespoon of Cumin seed, Dried Coriander; 1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon; 2 Cloves Garlic, 3 Tablespoons Fresh Parsley; 1 large Lemon, 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil, Fresh Rosemaey and Fresh Mint. Enough Cherry wood chips to fill your container. Method 1. Prepare the smoker as follows: a. Fill the basket at floor level with pre-lit charcoal, ideally restaurant quality; briquettes can be a bit fierce & quicker to burn; b. Insert the water bowl at level 2 & fill to 1â€? from the top; c. Insert a rack at the top level; d. Pre-heat to 100ÂşC. 2. Fill the wood chip container & soak for 5 minutes; drain off the excess water; place in direct contact with the charcoal 3. Prepare a rub as follows: a. Place the cumin, coriander & cinnamon in the mortar & grind to a fine consistency; b. Chop the parsley into 3mm (1/8â€?) square pieces; c. Add the zest & juice of the lemon & olive oil; d. Stir with a teaspoon; 4. Apply the rub to both sides of the meat immediately. 5. Cut the rosemary & mint into 4â€? (100mm) lengths & place in the water bowl 6. Hot-smoke for 1.5 hours @ 100ÂşC 7. Cover with foil & leave to rest for 15-20 minutes 8. Carve into thin slices 9. Serve with Boulangère potatoes carrots & French beans

News from Whatfield School Graded Ofsted ‘Good’ 2018, SIAMS ‘Outstanding’ 2016. We are pleased to say that our new website has been developed, and will go live in the next few weeks, so interested readers can keep up with some of the events and activities we do as a school. We have worked hard to make the website attractive, and full of the sort of information prospective parents may find useful. Eagle eyed readers may also have noticed that we, along with some other local schools, have been granted lottery funding for extending the play facilities at Whatfield School. We are looking forward to an enhanced environment for EYFS, and new challenge to our trim trail for the older pupils. The work will be completed by the end of June. As a ‘gold’ Sportsmark school, we are involved with a lot of sporting activities. As such, we have been pleased to get involved with the small schools festival at Elmsett, where our U11 football team were 2nd overall, played well and really enjoyed the occasion! A year 5/6 team from Whatfield also had a fantastic time at Quad kids where pupils participated in running throwing and jumping activities whilst representing Tanzania, and then met a real commonwealth Heptathlete! The cricket season is upon us, and we have had the chance to send a team to play at Westbourne as well as at Hadleigh High School. We are very proud of one pupil in particular, who has been chosen to represent Suffolk in cricket. Good luck with all your games Matthew! Our successful U11 gymnasts are going through to the county finals next week in Bury St Edmunds, wearing their sparkly new leotards, so we wish them good luck. Our Father’s day lunch was a delicious affair, with food sent up from our kitchen at Bildeston, and was very well attended with lots of adult meals served. The children had great fun sharing their playtime with parents! Whatfield School had a fantastic experience as part of The Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds ‘Once Upon A Festival’ last week. The school were spellbound as they watched the amazing production ’Found’ in the village hall. During the afternoon pupils followed up the ideas from the dance production as they were involved in workshops. This was funded through a bequest from Mona Bruce, a founder of the Whatfield Players, and is a pot of money the school will use to support drama productions and visits in her memory. We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome. Dusting Down As written prior, the planet Mars will be close to Earth at the end of July and very bright in our skies at magnitude -2.8, but current images of the planet are showing that Mars is currently experiencing a strong dust storm, and one so strong it could kill the NASA rover Opportunity which has been traversing the surface since 2012. The atmospheric pressure of Mars is just 1 percent the density of Earths, and the fine talcum powder-like soil can thus hang in the thin atmosphere for weeks, if not months. Surprisingly, the majority of storms originate from one crater called Hellas Basin, which also happens to be the deepest impact crater in the Solar System and was formed some 3 billion years ago. The temperature at the bottom is some 10 degrees warmer than the surface. This temperature differential fuels wind actions that then pick up the dust creating the storms. Opportunity rover relies on the Sun to power its Solar panels but because the Sun has been obscured by the dust, the rover has been put to sleep to ride out the storm. The vehicle can withstand temperatures down to -60 degrees C and the current prediction is for a minimum temperature of -37 degrees C, so all fingers crossed Opportunity will survive and carry on its fantastic work. Hadleigh Community Primary School Key Stage 1 Year 1 finished the half term with an exciting afternoon in the woods. Building on the pirate themed work they had been doing in class, parents, grandparents and carers were invited in to take part in a range of exploring activities. As well as den building, digging and bug hunting children were given nature scavenger hunts to complete, equipment to make bow and arrows and even had metal detectors to search for treasure hidden amongst the sand. Every child had the opportunity to have their face painted and eat a buttery crumpet toasted on the fire.

The next half term started with a bang! As part of a space themed week pupils were challenged to make a rocket to hold an egg astronaut. Once all the rockets were designed and made we went out to the playground and watched in anticipation as each rocket was launched. A few of them survived! A huge thank you to Gate Farm Eggs for donating the eggs. Year 2 On Tuesday 12th June Year 2 visited the Norman Keep, known as Hedingham Castle. We all managed to fit on a double decker bus. We had a fabulous day learning about how to defend the castle against the attacking French army; how to cure headaches and coughs in medieval times; learning about the place in society that people had inside the castle; how to serve food at a banquet to the Lord and Lady of the castle. The children learnt about the importance of the Archers and the weapons that were used to fight the enemy if you were a soldier. The children also had a go at a game of jousting, it was a busy fun packed day! We are now looking forward to preparing our own medieval banquet, practising our bowing and presenting our home made cooked food to our Lord and Lady of the classroom. Whole School We have been continuing to develop our pupils love of reading and every class has signed up to a library session at Hadleigh Library. The classes who have visited so far have found out about this year's Summer Reading Challenge and been able to choose a book to take home. We hope that lots of our children will take part in the challenge over the summer holidays. Music We had an exciting lead up to the half term break with 140 children from Key Stage 2 taking part in our Summer Music Concert. There were two evening performances with a variety of musical instruments including violins, two large recorder groups, a ukulele orchestra and a handbell group. There were several talented solo/group singers, instrumental soloists and the concert finished with our large choir of over 100 children performing songs from ‘Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat’. We are very proud of all the children for their hard work and dedication leading up to their performances. We would also like to thank the audience for their generous donations towards our musical instrument fund.

At this point the Meeting was adjourned for a short period to enable the new Mayor to be robed and photographed. At the resumption, the newly installed Mayor, signed the Declaration of Acceptance of Office Book and, on behalf of the Council, thanked Councillor Free for her work and efforts during her term of office and presented her with a past-mayors jewel. DEPUTY TOWN MAYOR On the proposition of the Town Mayor and seconded variously, it was RESOLVED that Councillor Monks be, and is hereby elected, Deputy Town Mayor to serve until the next Annual Meeting of the Council and signed the Declaration of Acceptance of Office Book. REPORT OF OUTGOING TOWN MAYOR Councillor Free advised that she would not be reading out her full last report as this had been done at the Annual Town Meeting. First of all Councillor Free thanked all the staff for their fantastic work in the office and especially my Secretary, Elaine Root, for all the support, advise and help she has given me during my term in office. Secondly I would like to say a big thank you to my Deputy Mayor, Peter Matthews, for his support he has given me over the past few weeks which is more than my other Mayor Elect did who gave me no support at all. I wish Councillor Matthews all the best in the coming year and I will continue to support the Council and people of Hadleigh the best I can. I felt really privileged to become Mayor of Hadleigh and felt proud to represent our town as I am just a Norfolk gal and only lived here for a short time. The social side of being Mayor has been great. I have met a lot of lovely people and made friends in our Chain Gang as we Mayors are known. The other side of being Mayor has been hard work, sleepless nights, illness, hospitalised and stressed, not to say appalled by people’s behaviour in meetings and on social media which can only be one side as we are Councillors are bound by the Code of Conduct. COMPOSITION AND APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES Following receipt of Councillors preferences, it was RESOLVED that membership of the Committees for the coming year be as set out below:

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor reported that he was in receipt of Councillor Young and Ruddy’s resignations from the Council. The Mayor had also been given a statement from the staff which was read by the Clerk: As members of staff we have been reading in the press and on social media all about the current situation at Hadleigh Town Council. We would like to know where exactly this leaves all of us. Are Mr Wilson, Mr Shearly-Sanders, Ms Young and some members of the public aware that they could potentially be affecting our livelihoods? From what we know in the office, our personal opinion is that some of what is reported in the press and on social media is one-sided and not always factually correct and the public are therefore not fully aware of what the situation is and what we do. We feel this continues to cause a lot of uncertainty all around. We have always carried out our work to the best of our abilities and have always given 100% but feel if we are not able to do this due to outside influences then this may start to have an adverse effect. We feel therefore that we are entitled to know where we stand and how this will affect our jobs as we are not volunteers and these are our only paid jobs and do not run alongside any other work. It was agreed that this would be discussed by the Finance & Personnel Committee. STANDING ORDER NO. 40 There were no questions raised. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £28,151.98 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. Councillor Shearly-Sanders raised concerns over Hadleigh Town Council making a payment to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity and abstained from voting. REPORTS It was agreed that existing arrangements for County and District Councillors to provide written reports at Council Meetings would continue as it was felt that this was very useful. The Clerk was asked to contact the County Council and District Council Councillors to request that their reports are received earlier. PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 3rd May 2018 were noted. SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 10th May 2018 was received and accepted. ANNUAL TOWN MEETING The Clerk reported that around 80 people attended this year’s Annual Town Meeting along with Councillors. The Mayor presented Mrs Pam Jacobs with the Town Mayor’s Award. Written reports had been received from seven local organisations. TOWN COUNCIL AGENDA This item had been requested following a question raised by a member of the public asking if the public adjournment could be moved to the end of the meeting. The Clerk reported that advice had been received which recommended the removal of the public adjournment and replacing the item with an agenda item to receive questions from the members
of the public. It was agreed that the Clerk would put an item in the June edition of the Community News advising members of the public that for a trial period the public adjournment would be removed from the Town Council agenda and replaced with an item on the agenda for received questions or items of interest to be reported. GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION Councillor Cook had provided a written report on the work she had carried out regarding the implementation of this regulation. Councillor Cook had drawn up a comprehensive action plan and would be working with the staff in order that Hadleigh Town Council would be compliant with the regulation. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Councillor Shearly-Sanders spoke on his thoughts of what was required to move the Neighbourhood Plan forward. He was concerned that information from the website had been removed. He was advised that this is still available but unpublished until management of the site is agreed. Councillor Angland advised that this was a planning matter and the report she had received from the planning consultancy would be provided at the next planning meeting. The Mayor hoped that it would not be long now before the Plan was being worked on again. TOWN MATTERS Councillor Haylock reported that Babergh District Council was intending to close the Tourist Information Centres at Lavenham, Long Melford and Sudbury. Councillor Haylock felt that this was not forward thinking and may have an adverse effect on the High Street. The Clerk was asked to write to the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce to find out what their organisation was doing about this due to the effect it could have on local businesses in the area. Councillor Byrne advised that the Friday Market in Hadleigh is now becoming so successful that if more land was available more stall holders wanted to attend. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.35pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) PSLCC CilCC Addendum: This is a draft report of the meeting. The Minutes will be approved at the Monthly Town Council Meeting held on the third Thursday of the following month. Minutes are viewable on Hadleigh Town Council website – www.hadleighsuffolk.gov.uk. Letter from Layham www.layham.org
Annual Parish Meeting Parish Council The main matters dealt with at the 30th May 2018 meeting (the Annual General Meeting) of the Parish Council were: • Election of Chairman and Officers It was agreed unanimously that Michael Woods be re-elected Chairman for 2018/19; he confirmed he was happy to accept the nomination and the Declaration of Acceptance of Office form was duly signed. It was also agreed unanimously that Steve Laing be re-elected Vice-Chairman; he accepted the nomination. The Chairman proposed that councillors’ individual responsibilities remained the same for the coming year; this was agreed. Doreen Sillett said this would be her last meeting as she had moved to Ipswich; she would send a formal letter of resignation to the Chairman. • Babergh District Council report In response to a question concerning the new housing development in Holbrook, Cllr Ward said some of the houses were owned by BDC, but others were shared ownership with Orbit Housing. There would be a Q&A meeting in Hadleigh Guildhall on Saturday 9 June from 10am-12 noon, when he and the Deputy Leader of BDC would answer residents’ questions and discuss any concerns. • CPR training A training session for a group of Upper Layham residents had been arranged for later in June. • Sign to Village Hall The Clerk had received confirmation from SCC Highways that the Operations Team was in the process of scheduling the work and would confirm a date in due course. • Green Team A volunteer would carry out an audit of the insects and plants in the conservation area. There would be a working party at 6pm on Tuesday 26 June to tackle the Himalayan Balsam growing near the ditch; permission had been granted by the owner of the Mill House. • Defibrillator for Brett Green The new defibrillator had been delivered, together with a further supply of ‘mini annie mannequins’. The mounting had been designed and would be made by a local builder who had kindly volunteered to make it free of charge. A donation towards the cost of the defibrillator had been gratefully received from the Hadleigh Heath Centre Charitable Trust. • Marquis of Cornwallis, Upper Street The re-consultation on the external lighting layout was discussed and comments submitted by Richard Cranfield were noted. It was agreed to reiterate the comments made by the PC in June 2017 and to state that councillors agreed with the general thrust of the comments made by Mr Cranfield, which they felt reflected a commonsense approach. • Playing Field The Clerk had received an email and photographs of litter on the playing field which a resident of Upper Layham regularly collected when walking his dogs. One suggestion was that another litter bin should be located near the football goal areas. However, it was noted that the existing bins were currently emptied by volunteers; it was agreed to find out how much BDC would charge to empty them. A decision on whether to purchase an additional bin would be an agenda item for the next meeting. • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) The Government had now accepted a proposed amendment to legislation to remove the requirement for Parish Councils to appoint a Data Protection Officer. Resignation of Parish Councillor Doreen Sillett has decided that, on her move to Ipswich, it is inappropriate for her to continue serving as a Parish Councillor for Layham. Layham Local History Group Jeff Ward, a member of the Layham Local History Group, has been researching the men who served in the First World War and who returned home safely. It has come as quite a surprise that Jeff has found 37 confirmed names so far – making a total, together with the 19 who died, of 56 Layham men who were away for all, or part of, the war. That was more than 10% of the village population. The photograph is of Acting Sergeant Thomas Stannard of the Royal Engineers who served, among other places, in Archangel in Russia and Jubbulpore in India. He was awarded the Distinguished conduct Medal in 1915 and the Military Medal in 1919. His parents lived on Long Road in Lower Layham. Jeff has reason to believe that some or all of the following may have served – but has no proof: Richard Andrews of Rands Farm, John Barton of Cobblers Corner Henry Bennett of Upper Street, Walter Canham of Layham Lodge Jim Crisp of Upper Street, Alfred Fisher of Stoke Road Harry Prior of unknown address, Arthur Thorpe of Upper Street If you can provide information please let Jeff know on: jeffrey.ward2@ntworld.com Polish military badge found in Lower Layham During the afternoon of the local history exhibition a visitor, prompted by the presence of a metal detecting display, brought along a metal badge she had found in her Lower Layham garden forty years ago. It has not yet been possible to identify it beyond the fact that it is Polish in origin. The fir tree is the symbol of the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division and the arm and sword across the top is the symbol of the 2nd Polish Armoured Division. A search of the internet establishes that the Rifle Division (commonly known as the Christmas Tree Division) served with the British Eighth Army in North Africa and Italy (1941-45). They returned to this country after the war (to Hodgemoor Camp in Buckinghamshire) where they were eventually disbanded. Most soldiers chose not to return to Poland, which had fallen under communist rule, and many stayed in this country. It may be that one found his way to Lower Layham. Unknown to most of us, he has been dabbling in oil paints as a relaxation. Having completed a picture entitled ‘The Shelley Road’ he took the bold step of submitting it for consideration to the Royal Academy of Arts for possible inclusion in their 250th Summer Exhibition. Imagine his excitement when he received a letter telling him that the hanging committee of ten Royal Academicians (led by Grayson Perry) had selected his painting, from 20,000 entries, to be one of the 1352 works of art in this year’s show! Congratulations Brian. The Royal Academy 250th Anniversary Summer Exhibition is open 12 June until 19 August. Don’t miss it! If you can’t get to London you can call up Brian’s painting on the Royal Academy website – by clicking on Catalogue Number 365.
Layham Green Team The experiment carried out in the Conservation Area of the playing field with a tub of wild flower seeds has resulted in a patch of colour at the time of writing (Mid June). There are at least half a dozen new plants in evidence but the two most obvious are cornflowers and poppies. The team may try to extend the range of plants next year. It cannot be seen in the photograph, but when the picture was being taken, a Meadow Brown butterfly landed on one of the cornflowers. That’s what all the effort is for.

Dear Sir, Please write to: Kelvin Avis 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF or email: kelvin@keithavis.co.uk
Dear Sir, On 7th June at around 6.30 my wife and I were driving home from Bury St Edmunds as we came down Gallows Hill in Hadleigh, a group of cyclists were biking up the hill passing parked cars. The lead rider was over the white line and as he passed us there was a rude gesture and some foul language, I do not appreciate being spoken to like that. I would like through your magazine to say to these people who ride these 'racing bikes' if they want to take the whole road up they ride ‘off road’ otherwise ride within the rules of the road. I am nearly 70 years old and if I rode like that I would had a good telling of for not riding in single file. I would be grateful if you could publish this in your magazine because this person will know who he is and perhaps he will think before he uses foul language again. Trevor Theobald

By the time your readers read this letter the result of the vote of no confidence in Hadleigh Town Council will be known. It is really a sad state of affairs when there is a public vote of no confidence in a Town Council and I am sure that Councillors really believe they have made a difference when in fact probably a number of them haven't. Hadleigh has changed considerably over the years and I can remember when we first moved to Hadleigh being being absolutely horrified that some customers were served outside of shops because they were too dirty to go inside and their money washed before it went into the till. Thankfully that poverty has gone. Hadleigh is a better place with lots of new housing, buzzing High Street, new shopping facilities and a thriving industrial estate. The voluntary sector is also thriving with lots of sports and community clubs. A great place to work, live and play, but despite all of this, in my opinion, we have been let down by Hadleigh Town Council and some Councillors who live in the past and don't have the skills needed to be a modern Councillor. The heritage of Hadleigh is of course really important but it is the future which needs to be articulated in a Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan which the Government challenged Town and Parish Councils to produce in 2011 so that residents views could be taken into account in the development of their communities. Fast forward 7 years where is an approved Neighbourhood Plan? Other towns and villages locally Long Melford, Lavenham, East Bergholt and Sudbury all achieved an approved plan some time ago. What did Hadleigh Town Council do? suspend the Neighbourhood Working Party last July and since then nothing has happened as far as the public is concerned. Meanwhile Hadleigh residents are losing out on a say on what happens locally, particularly with housing developments and infrastructure. So its open season for developers and Hadleigh loses out on tens of thousands of pounds from new development approvals. The Cemetery extension - and I support this proposal, but haven't seen a business case, there probably is one but like everything else the Town Council does its probably tucked away somewhere. Babergh gave planning permission for the cemetery extension in April 2015 but nothing has happened and the costs will have increased every year because nothing has been done. In fact because of increased costs Hadleigh Town Council has recently reduced the specification to be within the Town Councils maximum borrowing limit. In fact the scheme is now so different to what was originally proposed a new planning permission has been applied for. Despite numerous requests no written financial appraisal document for this project has ever been available, despite being requested again at the Annual Town meeting. The Guildhall is something we are all proud of but it is under-utilised, not proactively marketed and is costing Hadleigh residents a bomb when it should be bringing income to local people. I have been to a few Town Council meetings in the last couple of years, the first time prompted when an application was received for planning permission to build 14 houses on a buffer strip of land, created as an open space when the Hadleigh by-pass was built. It was sold in 2010 for £10,000 and five years later was on the market for £1.5M with planning permission for 14 houses, 4 affordable. We had 30 residents at the meeting and the Town Council were in shock, like rabbits in the headlights. Never before had so many members of the public attend a Planning meeting and the whole meeting was badly managed. The Council Chamber was clearly overcrowded, no health and safety announcement and thought if there was a fire how did we get out? The staircase to the Council Chamber was very steep and it was difficult to hear anything going on and the meeting was run like a closed shop. This letter is a brief summary of why Hadleigh Town Council needs a few new councillors with vision and the ability to deliver on things like the Neighbour Hood Plan, Cemetery project and make a go of the Guildhall. The residents of Hadleigh want a Town Council which promotes the Town, represents the views of local residents, is open and transparent and is business like. Carol Schleip

Conditions take a Toll In this article we remember: Walter James Willis 3 July 1918 Albert Edwin Baker 8 July 1918 Maurice Albert Driver 18 July 1918 The deaths of three Hadleigh men in military service during July 1918 reflect not just the tragedy of the Great War, but also the harshness of the social conditions of the day. In addition reports from the Western Front were showing the prevalence of the infamous Spanish Influenza, with some men being described as dangerously ill. Private Walter James Willis was born in January 1895 and brought up at 135 Angel Street. He went to Bridge Street School and later worked as a farm stock man. In October 1916 Walter was conscripted and in May 1917 was sent to Western Front to join the 12th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles who were in the Ypres Salient. In August they moved south to the Somme sector to hold the Hindenburg Line. They were in the front line just south of St Quentin when the huge German Spring Offensive began in the early hours 21 March 1918. It was a misty morning and within a half an hour the battalion’s communication to the rear was cut. By midday the war diary records that the battalion was believed surrounded and 22 officers and 566 other ranks were reported missing. Walter was among the missing, he was captured and taken prisoner. He was sent to Stendal POW Camp in Germany where the conditions were harsh, food scarce and disease rife. He subsequently died of dysentery. He is buried at the Cronenbourg French National Cemetery in a suburb of Strasbourg, France on the German border and is remembered on the Hadleigh War Memorial. Private Albert Edwin Baker was born in 1877 and on leaving school he worked as a butcher’s boy. His father had died when he was thirteen and there seemed to be some instability in his character, he lived with his mother for much of the time but when she moved into the alms houses on George Street, Albert was out of work and taken into the Semer Workhouse. Probably through conscription he enlisted into the Royal Defence Corps for home service and is known to have guarded German prisoners in Northamptonshire. In mid 1918 his fitness was re-categorised as B1 and he was transferred to the Norfolk regiment at Felixstowe and being made ready to deploy overseas. A week before being sent to France, he took his own life with a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. It is unclear why, but the prospect of front line service must have terrified him. He has a CWGC grave at New Cemetery Felixstowe and while the Hadleigh War Memorial committee made a positive decision not to include him on the memorial in his home town, his mother made sure to add the following poignant words to his headstone; “A Good Son To His Mother”. Private Maurice Albert Driver was born in 1898, the youngest of four sons who lived in George Street. His upbringing was disrupted when by the age of seven he had lost both his parents. In December 1905 he was sent with his closest sibling, Frederick William, to a school for orphans; Durham House at Kingham Hill, Oxfordshire. In 1908 Frederick was too old to remain at the school and was sent to Canada to a farm operated by the School Trustees. Maurice remained at the school for several years, whether he followed in his brothers footsteps to Canada is unclear, but in July 1917 he was conscripted at Bury St Edmunds and sent to serve in the East Surrey Regiment. He was with the 1st Battalion close to Steenbecque, northern France in the middle of 1918 where he was wounded in combat and subsequently died. He has a known grave at Aire Communal Cemetery and is remember on the Hadleigh War Memorial. His brothers; Frederick joined the Canadian Forces, was wounded in the assault on Vimy Ridge, survived the war and returned to
GREAT WAR NEWS JULY 1918 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)
Wed 10 July Letters from our boys serving on the Western Front refer to the prevalence of Spanish influenza. A number of the London Royal Garrison Artillery men, who were billeted here, are down with it. Jack Frost son of Mr J Frost, High Street is recovering from this malady. Wed 10 July Leave on a very limited scale has again been granted to men on the Western Front. We hear that only eight men from one battalion are allowed to be away at the same time. Bill Parker, Tank Corps, inclines to be facetious on the subject. “I have been expecting it for quite a long time. The usual course of waiting for leave is:- You have no hope for six months, a faint hope in the next three months, then if Jerry leaves you alone for a few more months (number unknown) you have a faint chance of getting it.” Wed 17 July Privates Sidney Maskell [Angel Street] Royal Fusiliers and Harry Simpson [Bridge Street] Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment have spent time in hospital suffering from influenza. Wed 31 July Private Percy Gardiner, Machine Gun Corps, is getting fed up with Jerry and his shells. He sometimes has the satisfaction of making old Jerry duck his head and looks forward to the time when he will have disappeared from view. 46

Canada. Leonard served with the 2nd Kings Own and was killed in action in the Ypres Salient in May 1915, the military career of eldest brother Charles is still unclear. The German’s Spring Offensive increased the need for more troops on the Western Front. As a consequence the 15th Suffolks, formerly the Suffolk Yeomanry, were moved from Palestine and among them were a number of Hadleigh men. After training to deal with the very different conditions they formed part of G.H.Q. reserve being liable to move to any part of the Western Front at very short notice. There was much movement and many marches to get to the right location, in one case the war diary records, ‘It was a long tiring march and the Battalion had a considerable number of march casualties.’ The task of the battalion’s boot repairer, Hadleigh’s Private Harry Sillitoe, was therefore essential. Harry (nicknamed ‘Chuffin’) worked as a shoe repairer at 157 Angel Street before the war. He enlisted in 1916 and joined the 15th Suffolks in Egypt in February 1917. Even after the Armistice there still was much marching to be done as the battalion moved to the German border; Harry remained with the battalion well into 1919. After he was demobilised he returned to a Hadleigh as a shoe repairer and died in 1945. (Researched by Mark Brennan, Nigel Crisp, Jeff Ward. www.hadleighww1@gmail.com)
Suffolk Bereavement Support – When grief is unacknowledged In recent weeks we’ve been reflecting on what happens to us if grief is unacknowledged. According to many experts ‘every bereaved person is entitled to grieve when he or she needs or chooses to and in a manner in which they choose and denial of this can often lead to a variety of psychological and physical issues’. So often however society does not allow us the space to acknowledge or express what we are feeling about our loss. Life is hurried and our family, friends and work colleagues often want us to return to ‘normal’. When we can’t do this, it is easy to feel there something wrong with us and to suffer in silence and this can be unbearable! In actual fact our reactions are perfectly normal and grieving is as natural as crying when we are hurt. And this is how Suffolk Bereavement Support can help because our groups provide the opportunity to understand and to express how we feel in a supportive group setting and can and do contribute to recovery for our members. And it’s not all gloomy, we generally succeed in bringing some humour to the situation! If this blog is meaningful for you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? We are here to help! Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join us at any time. Report To Hadleigh Town Council Councillor Dr Sian Dawson (Hadleigh North) Brick Works Development by McCarthy & Stone – After the long wait, the developers have commenced digging. The project is now well underway, and I really hope that after all the attention to detail that was put in early development stages, that Hadleigh residents will be rewarded with an outstanding housing scheme on this site. I await to see the avenue of blossom trees and the bridge, which already seems to have been changed, but I am determined that we shall have a quality build that will be an asset to our Town. Following the planning consent granted last year, construction specialist Mick George has been contracted to complete the necessary demolition stages to enable the build. It will deliver 35 one and two-bedroom apartments, and 29 luxury living, bungalow and cottage style homes, respectively, as well as extensive public-open space and a new footbridge over the river. Free Parking - You will not be surprised to learn that a joint parking policy (Babergh & MS) is again being discussed. The motion will be presented to the Babergh Cabinet in December 18. If the implementation of parking charges in Babergh is recommended by the Cabinet, I would expect it to be brought to a full Council Meeting before implementation. Public Access - I am pleased to advise that it has now been agreed that we will have an access point (of some sort) in Hadleigh following the move to Ipswich. No details have yet been provided but a positive outcome to lobbying. Private Sector Housing - The redraft of the new Local Plan is expected to go before the Cabinet this month with a further public consultation in the summer of 2018. We should not expect to see its implementation before 2020 – not ideal but delayed by the number of comments received on the first draft. The Leader of Babergh DC is pleased to see that more Parishes have decided to develop their own Neighbourhood Plan. Good news: proposals are now in the pipeline to review the 5-year housing supply every 6 months rather that in the current annual review. Merger of Babergh & MSDCs - Just a reminder that any consideration of a merger between Babergh & Mid Suffolk is on the back burner for the foreseeable future. The Leader of Babergh DC supports the unitary solution but this will not be offered before 2020. I am not aware of the new Suffolk CC Leader’s (Matthew Hicks) position on this matter. Disposal of Corks Lane Buildings - I hope that you were able to drop in to see one of the presentations that were delivered in Hadleigh to inform Babergh residents of the initial disposal plans for the Corks Lane site. The presentations were not particularly informative, but in a nutshell, it will be for 50+ houses/flats - all privately owned. The project will be considered by the full Babergh Council in June 18 (without a full business plan) and then go before the full Planning Committee in September 18. To sell or develop? A Vision for Sudbury - The Cabinet approved circulation of a background paper called delivering a Vision for Prosperity in Sudbury, with an Action Plan, on 11th June 18. It’s a useful document that brings out the issues and options and it should lead to a much needed “action” rather than more “talking”. I mention it here because MS have done it for Stowmarket and I would like to see a similar exercise completed for Hadleigh. Communication - Our failure to “get the message over” to the electorate (good or bad) has been a concern of mine for the last 3 years. I am pleased to note that the Leader of Babergh DC and his Deputy are now doing “meet the people” Q & A events to try to bridge this gap. The first was held in Sudbury a couple of weeks ago and the most recent was conducted in the Hadleigh Town Hall, on Saturday 9th June 18. Attendance was disappointing but that’s probably a reflection of our need to let voters (not just in Hadleigh & Sudbury) know that these events are taking place. Addendum I have asked Babergh to pull the funds together for the bench over the next few weeks in the Market Square and it will be installed by the end of July. Babergh have been maintaining the existing bench but as there is a local wish for a more fitting design that will encircle the tree in the square in two semi circles. I shall keep on the pressure!!!

Although traditionally a running club, we have had a thriving triathlon section for a number of years and more recently quite a few of our members have been getting into competitive cycling. As the weather has improved over the past few weeks, Hares have been out and about taking part in all sorts of activities ranging from short, sharp efforts to long gruelling events and here are just a few of those: On the running side Hares have been active at all distances from 5k to ultramarathon. Five athletes took on the Stour Valley Marathon. This is actually an ‘ultra’ as it is run over 27 rather than 26.2 miles, and is made all the more challenging by being off road. Nevertheless, Steve Hunt, Rachel Bodsworth, Kitty Rigby, Oli Riches and Amanda Dunn made their way round the course on a hot day, sometimes pushing through standing crops as tall as them. Stour Valley Marathon finishers The ever popular and notoriously hilly Woodbridge 10k race took place on 20th May ending in victory for our very own Elisa Bostock who won the ladies’ race in a blistering 40 mins and 10 seconds. Congratulations to Elisa on a terrific performance and a great win. Three other Hares completed the course: Paul Ballard (46:42), Kay Oxford (51:42) and Paul McAllister (55:55). Great work all round! Earlier in the month, the Ipswich Twighlight 5k took place on the streets around Ipswich waterfront. Timed to beat the sunset (and co-incidentally the rain) the race takes place in the evening making it a bit of a novelty for those taking part. This year we had four Hares running: Rachel Bodsworth, Glen Avis, Stuart Hunt and Bob Grimsey. Of those, Rachel was the first home in 21 minutes and 6 seconds with Glen close behind on 22:51. The annual Friday 5 series of five mile races around the local area always attracts a large number of club runners. So far three of the five races have taken place at Sudbury, Felixstowe and Framlingham and no less than 14 different Hares have taken part placing us 8th club in the league after the second race. There are 26 clubs in the competition and those above us are much larger clubs who can regularly field far more runners so we are punching above our weight as usual. Finally, on the running side, it was apparently English Wine Week a couple of weeks ago, and what better way to mark the occasion by running a 5k in Dedham. Not sure whether the run or the wine was the biggest draw but Bob Grimsey and Lisa Fosker took up the challenge. One for next year perhaps…. Our triathletes are getting into the swing of the season with Pat Atwood and Sara Taylor-Balls moving a step closer to their Ironman goal in Copenhagen in August. They completied the Grafman half ironman at Grafham Water on 20th May in 7 hours 37 minutes and 7 hours and 50 minutes respectively. No easy event, this comprised of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile undulating bike and 13.1 mile run. In the process, Pat won her age group and Sara came 5th in hers. Well done, ladies. Meanwhile, Adam Johnson continues his recent run of good form coming first in age group at Culford sprint triathlon on 3rd June, finishing the 300m swim, 20km bike and 5km run in a fraction over 59 minutes. Finally, our Cyclists have been busy at Peterborough and Ipswich. Apart from taking part in various sportives ranging in distance from 60 to 100 miles, they have been busy competing. The annual Tour of Cambridgeshire is a qualifier for the World Championship UCI Gran Fondo, this year to held in Italy. In previous years a number of Hares have managed to qualify and have represented Great Britain in Denmark and, last year, in France. This year only four Hares entered – Deb and Elizabeth Stewart, Trudy Avis and Leon Hayward. Elizabeth was too young to qualify but finished the 80 mile course in 4 hours and 18 minutes, and Deb made it to the end in 4 hours and 33 minutes just missing out on the qualifying time. Sadly, whilst riding strongly and well within qualifying pace, Trudy hit a pothole at mile 51 and had to withdraw, but Leon flew around the course to qualify for the second year in a row with a time of 3 hours and 11 minutes. Danny Preece continues to shine as one of our cycling stars. A member of the Army Cycling squad and a PTI, Danny represents the Hares at a number of closed circuit races during the season. This year’s opener saw him come sixth overall in the first of the Suffolk Cycle Race Series at Trinity Park. Keep it up, Danny. Hadleigh Hares are a friendly local athletics club catering for all levels and abilities from beginners to Ironman triathletes. It is a fun and friendly way of getting or keeping fit. If you fancy coming along and joining at whatever level please contact us at chair@hadleighhares.co.uk or via Facebook. There is a beginners/improvers session every Monday evening at 7pm meeting at Hadleigh Pool, and we run a session for ladies only as well as more advanced running, and mixed ability swimming and cycling sessions throughout the week.

Hadleigh Bowling Club The Club’s been delighted to make arrangements with the Hadleigh Dementia Alliance to use our petanque pitch every Friday. We provide a pitch and a volunteer to help with the games and the Alliance do the rest, bringing family and carers who all join in. Families and carers say how valuable the experience is for everyone who comes, offering exercise and fresh air, interaction at different levels, and for families it’s a relaxed opportunity to chat and share experiences and information. It’s proved a really enjoyable and rewarding time for club volunteers too, with one saying he wished he could get on the rota every week. We’ll move indoors in the winter to play short mat bowls. Simply talk to Hadleigh Dementia Alliance if you’d like to bring someone along. Meanwhile on the bowls green Mick Barrand has won his early rounds of the Champion of Champions county singles competition, and he and Peter Miller are through to the finals of the pairs event. The summer is packed with external league competitions, friendlies and internal games, and with members down for multiple events the various team captains spend their days competing for players. Perhaps we should make that a competition all of its own with a cup at the end.

A target of 500 knitted poppies by the end of May this year was quickly exceeded by Fidelis members and their friends. Once the pattern was in circulation and red wool acquired from many different sources, including the town’s charity shops, some serious knitting began. Ladies found it relaxing, therapeutic but also compulsive. There were reports of RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) forcing some Jan Devey, Mark Brennan, Liz Wilson dedicated knitters to take a recovery break. One member who took her needles and wool to Spain, got several expats working on the project too. Care home residents also got involved. By the end of the designated period the target was an outdated aspiration. Mark Brennan, Project Leader of the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project was invited to take delivery of the collection at the Fidelis AGM last month. He was surprised to find the collection well exceeded 1,000 knitted flowers. Mark thanked all who had contributed. He briefly outlined the various groups involved in the many town projects to commemorate this very special, dark event in our history which blighted so many lives. We look forward to seeing many of these reach fruition so that Hadleigh will proudly and respectfully remember the Great War Centenary. JD

Your local friendly Tennis Club If Wimbledon has inspired you then Hadleigh Tennis Club is ready to welcome you! The Club’s existence was recorded over 137 years ago when it played one of its first matches against a team from Bildeston and both men’s and ladies’ teams continue to compete in the local leagues, both summer and winter. Since our last report for HCN the annual Hadleigh Tennis Club Mixed Doubles Tournament took place under sunny skies and soaring temperatures on Sunday, 3rd June. 16 players took part in a revamped format, which Mixed Doubles finalists (l to r): saw each competitor play 4 group Joe Young, Carol McLeod, matches with different partners. The Trevor Rowland and Kate White format proved successful with some very tight matches and excellent tennis played. The top men (Trevor Rowland and Joe Young) and top women (Kate White and Carol McLeod) from each group progressed to the final, which attracted a good number of spectators due in part to the tennis and also the favourable weather. Trevor & Carol finally overcame Joe & Kate 6-2 in a hard fought match to become this year's champions. The end of June and early July will see the Ladies’ and Men’s Club tournaments to a similar format and hopefully similar weather! We have use of 3 floodlit all weather courts located on Layham Road next to the rugby club with “Club Play” sessions for members on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday mornings from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. You can play a few sessions to see how you get on before deciding whether or not to join and we can put you in touch with local coaches if required. If you have young children who want to start playing there is an independent qualified coach who runs group sessions for children at the courts. If you are interested just come along to any of the Club Play sessions and have a go. If you would like details of membership please email hadleightennis@gmail.com, or text our Secretary, Bryan Walls on 07714 484842.

Stoke by Nayland Golf Club News On Thursday the 31st of May the junior section entered a team of 3 to play in the Faldo wedge, an Essex competition for under 18 year olds, this year played at Canons Brook GC located on the outskirts of Harlow. The 3 players, Max Toombs (the club junior captain), Harry English & Sam Nixon managed to come second to Thorpe Hall golf club who won this last year as well. The competition is for the total of the 3 scores so there is no room for a bad round. Sam and Harry both scored 39 points and Max had 33 to give them a total score of 111, 4 shots behind the winners.
(L to R) Harry English, Max Toombs, Sam Nixon together with Darren Pegram, the Canons Brook Captain, and Roger Walmsley, the President of the Essex Golf Union. Each month during the summer, a friendly mixed game of golf is arranged for 1 Friday night by Sue Gregory and her husband Stuart. Aptly named the “Friday night Mixed”, pairs are drawn out of a hat and then a greensome competition is played over 9 holes. This month the competition was played on the front 9 of the constable course on Friday the 1st. The completion was won by Peter Garnet playing with the ladies captain, Elaine Davidson. With 21 points they beat their playing partners, Steve Clark & Janet Hodge into 2nd place by 1 point. Afterwards the whole group enjoy a meal in the bar and a good chat. For mixed golfers this is an excellent introduction into the golf club. The Curry Cup On Saturday the club played their first match of 4 league games in the Curry Cup against Seckford hall GC, near Woodbridge. This is a 36 hole competition with pairs playing foursomes in the morning and then singles in the afternoon. The design of the competition is to give up & coming players a chance to play the same format as the county competitions and is played between clubs from north Essex & south Suffolk. Playing at home the Picture is of (L to R) Peter & Elaine team had a convincing 16 – 2 win. with the men’s captain, Alan Line On Sunday the Thornton Cup team ( the best players in the club) played their second round plate competition match against The Burstead. With 5 players playing at home and 5 away, neither side gets home advantage. The team managed to win 6 – 4 to progress to the quarter-finals where they will play against Toot Hill on the 8th of July.

Our Junior members have been extremely busy in the last few months. Our two Junior Teams finished their first Junior League in Colchester, there were 7 teams in the u12 division, our Cosmic Rockets finished 4th and Saturn Rockets finished as runners up in 2nd place which earnt them trophies, Saturn Rockets also won the ‘Sportsmanship’ award voted by the other teams – such a great result for the club in our first season and first league. Both teams were entered into two tournaments since May, the Colchester League Tournament which saw Cosmic Rockets come 5th and Saturn Rockets 2nd, they also played in the KATs Youth Rally, this was a huge tournament with 15 teams entered into the u12 pool, both teams played some fantastic netball and had a lot of positive comments from well-established teams, Saturn Rockets managed a 3rd place finish only missing out on 2nd place on goal difference, fantastic achievement. The two Junior Teams are now playing in the Colchester Summer league which is a fun league where players pick their playing positions randomly; both teams are doing extremely well so far. Congratulations to 4 of our juniors who have been successful in the first stages of Suffolk Netball Academies, all the girls will be having their second stage of trials over the summer – Good Luck Girls! If your daughter is interested in getting into Netball or joining a club we have a taster session 18th August 10am12noon at Hadleigh High School, please contact Hayley Greenhill, Head Coach on the contact details below for more information.
