On a bright sunny day in June 1972 all the infants and their teachers of Hadleigh County Primary School were taken by coach to Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex for a day at the beach. As the school was soon closing and the pupils transferred to Station Road, this was ‘The last school trip from Threadneedle Street fifty years ago’. Known as ‘the conker school’ for its row of horsechestnut trees in the playground, the building was demolished and Weavers Close now stands on the site. Another building lost to Hadleigh is ‘The Pillbox in Calais Street’, erected to give military cover during World War II (1939-1945) to the river crossing at the north end of the town. There were ten concrete pillboxes erected on the approach roads to Hadleigh, five of which still remain. Mark Lawrence continues to trace occupiers of ‘Orchard End, 121 Benton Street’, this time during the 19th century. Together with his two previous articles, this is an object lesson in how to trace the history of a house. Why not have a go at researching your home? Jane Richardson relates another part of ‘Eddie Botwright’s Hadleigh’ as he introduces us to various shops and inns and their owners at the southern end of High Street in the opening years of the 20th century. I have always said that historical research in old newspapers should be carried out wearing blinkers as eyes tend to roam around other columns instead of concentrating on the task in hand. Little snippets of other news can catch one’s attention as did an appeal in 1756 for the return of a prisoner escaped from Ipswich Gaol. All is explained in ‘Is this our John Harvey?’ ‘Remembering loyalty and good service’ records gifts in wills of employers to faithful servants. Felling the churchyard lime tree has brought to light a not-easily-read memorial to one such person. John Hoare, who served Very Revd Dr Thomas Tanner (rector 1745-1786) for the whole of his time in Hadleigh. In the past, Hadleigh has marked some royal occasions with permanent reminders: Queen Street was so named as Victoria, the first female monarch for 136 years, was crowned in 1838, the year that the two terraces were erected. At the lower end of George street are Jubilee Cottages and further up the same street in 1887, newly built Almshouses were opened as part of Hadleigh’s Golden Jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria. In 1977, almshouses in Magdalen Road were named Queen’s Row in honour of her great-great-great granddaughter, our present monarch, who was then celebrating her Silver Jubilee. Will Hadleigh be marking the Platinum Jubilee this year by so naming a new permanent feature of the town? In ‘Hadleigh celebrates a new monarch’ despite the cold, wet weather, crowds are shown watching the decorated floats that paraded through the streets to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in in June 1953. Hadleigh Orchestra celebrates 40 years! We are excited to announce that we are holding our annual summer concert on Sunday June 19th at 7.00pm with music from Haydn Clock Symphony, 1st movement of Schumann Piano Concerto, and Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition, including "The Great Gates of Kyiv". This is great news as we have been unable to hold concerts during the pandemic and had to cancel our Christmas concert at short notice. As we are celebrating the Orchestra being 40 years old we are inviting past and present musicians and supporters to join us during the interval for a glass of wine and piece of birthday cake! There is no charge for entry but we do accept donations, which this year it seems appropriate, will go towards the appeal for Ukraine via DEC.

Hadleigh Tennis Club flyingboat mystery Many readers will be familiar with the operations of seaplanes and flyingboats at nearby Felixstowe over the years 1913-1962, with the former seaplane base now largely occupied by the container port of Felixstowe Docks. On completion of their operational lives, several of the larger flyingboat hulls were taken to the hamlet of Felixstowe Ferry and repurposed as houseboats, providing picturesque accommodation. In addition, the nose-section of a ‘Felixstowe F5’ flyingboat was used as a garden potting-shed in Seaton Road. The F5 nose was recovered and restored, now on display at the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum. Intriguingly, the Museum also has the remains of a second F5 nose-section, with reports indicating it was used as a changing room at Hadleigh Tennis Club. However, very little is known about its time in Hadleigh or subsequent recovery. Do you remember the flyingboat(s)? Tuna and Anchovy products now available from Sibarita Sibarita’s shipment of tuna and anchovy products has arrived in Liston and will be available online from 1st June. The producer is La Gaviota S.L. whose Arroyabe brand is renowned for its quality. Established in 1898, “Arroyabe” is located in the picturesque Basque town of Bermeo which has the largest fishing fleet in the Bay of Biscay. A new factory was built in 1996 to combine technical innovation with traditional artisan skills and to meet the growing demand for tuna in glass jars. It remains a family business passed from generation to generation. Arroyabe is MSC certified which requires fisheries to be sustainable and for business to trade in certified seafood. Arroyabe’s products also comply with Friend of the Sea Criteria for Sustainable Fisheries. Friend of the Sea is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation, whose mission is the conservation of the marine habitat. All Siberita’s tuna products are Dolphin Safe certified to ensure the tuna does not come from vessels that chase and encircle herds of dolphins. Sibarita has both White Tuna, “Bonito” and Yellowfin Tuna. The White Tuna is caught by traditional “pole and line” fishing. Fish are carefully selected. How is the Tuna prepared? • On receiving the Tuna, the belly, or “ventresca” is removed – this is the ultimate Tuna delicacy available in small cans from Sibarita. • Depending on the size of the fish, it is left whole, or cut it into sections which are cooked carefully in water and brine with each piece cooked for just the right length of time needed. • The sections of fish are cleaned, skin, bones, fins etc removed and the fillets are cut ready for packaging. • Finally, they are manually packaged and the liquids to cover them are added: olive oil, brine, or flavoured sauces, followed by sterilisation and final cooling. Hadleigh town is gearing up to provide support for Ukrainian refugees with the setting up of the Hadleigh Hosts Ukrainians community group. Volunteers with skills ranging from trauma treatment to translators, English teachers and health experts met at The Flying Guardsman to form a team to help both hosts and refugees. Hadleigh is a great place to house refugees. It has all the shops you need, has nursery, primary and secondary schools, a good health centre, a community minded church and you can get everywhere on foot. This is already proving beneficial to the 11 refugees at homes in and around Hadleigh at the end of April. At that time six more were expected and accommodation was available for another nine. Anna Beznosenko recently arrived from the Ukraine and now in Benton Street, is working with the Accommodation for Ukrainians in Ipswich and Surrounding Villages to match hosts with refugees. But more homes are needed as there are an increasing number of requests from Ukrainians trying to reach safety in the UK. Prospective host Cyndy Hilton, and Shauna Bilson, who cannot host but wanted to help, have teamed up to organise the town’s community group to support both hosts and refugees in Hadleigh. This will be set up to make it easy for refugees to get in contact with each other and for hosts In Hadleigh and nearby to find the expertise they and their guests need. Many refugees will arrive relieved to find safety but traumatised not just by events in Ukraine and leaving their homes and the life they knew, but also by leaving their men behind still in danger. The response from the town has been tremendous with people offering help with translation, teaching English, finding jobs, expertise in how to deal with trauma, contacts with the church as well as the practical issues of finding clothes, transport and general admin help. The Cock Inn, Hadleigh Spring is in the air folks and soon we will welcome the summer, well hopefully. We are about to replant the gardens here which will make the outside areas far more pleasant. The hanging baskets are enroute too so the façade on George Street will once again benefit from the normal colourful flowers that seem to brighten up the area come rain or shine. Remember that we are dog friendly both in the garden area and in the public bar. We even have doggy treats available for the well behaved! Winter sports are coming to an end so we sadly say goodbye to football and rugby for a month or two, though we will of course welcome live coverage of Tennis, Cricket, F1 and MotoGP racing et al. As I write we still have a week to go in the Premier League with Man City still in the driving seat and Liverpool waiting in the wings. If City beat Villa it’s all over, but you never know. The Europa Cup was an interesting affair with Glasgow Rangers taking on Frankfurt in the final after West Ham were marginally beaten in the semis. Well done to Frankfurt who are the Europa Champions this year. The Champions League Final is still to play for where Liverpool take on Spanish giants Real Madrid in the final on 28th May. By the time you read this article you will be the wiser of both the European Champions and Premier League winners. The new football season will start earlier than normal this year on 6th August as a result of this year’s World Cup being hosted in Qatar. International teams will set off for Qatar mid November after only 16 PL games being played. The PL will restart on Boxing Day, after the World Cup Final which takes place on the 18th December. What a Christmas present for footy enthusiast. F1 racing fans can watch the Grand Prix de Monaco live here on Sunday 28th May at 2pm followed by the Azerbaijan GP on 12th June at 12 noon. The Canadian GP will be screened at 7pm on Sunday 20th June followed by the British GP on Sunday 3rd July at 3pm. Put those dates in the diary folks. Anyone for tennis? Wimbledon will start on the 27th of June. It’s the world’s oldest tennis tournament, first televised on 27th June 1937 and is the only major tournament played on grass. Hadleigh Old School Pop Up Art Sale in St Mary’s Hadleigh Old School is going ‘on the road’ as we decamp from our regular art gallery to host a pop-up art sale at The Midsummer Festival of Flowers, Music and Art, at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. The South Chapel of the church will be filled with artwork on the themes of ‘flowers’ and ‘music’. Hadleigh Old School will be offering a selection of works from our ‘Benton End’ Collection – including Poppies by Joan Warburton, a watercolour painted in 1969 and, ‘Spring and Summer Flowers’, a large floral study by Sir Cedric Morris that was recently exhibited at the FirstSite event celebrating The East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing. On the music theme there will be a silk screen print of ‘George Melly Singing’ by Maggi Hambling. Maggi recently kindly restored the painting of the head of Christ which is on permanent display in the church. Suffolk artists have risen to the ‘music’ and ‘flower’ challenge by creating pieces in many forms – from watercolour paintings to photographs, sculpture and in textiles. It will be a return to Hadleigh for Sandra Wall Armitage, former President of the Society of Botanical Artists, following her successful solo show in the town last year. She will be joined by fellow SBA member Janie Pirie, who recently showcased a collection of beautiful pictures of Roses at a gallery in London. Christopher Ryland will offer a single work called ‘Flowers and Music’ – painted as he listened to classical music! This will the first chance to see Ryland’s work in Hadleigh and he plans to stage a full show later in the year. Clare Dawson will offer photographic prints – her pictures of Irises proved to be popular at our Christmas Fayre. The textile group Feed Dogs Down feature tulips in two pieces and a third depicts a magnificent firebird inspired by Stravinsky. Cris Coe is working on a special new sculpture, with vibrant colours swirling across metallic orbs, as well as a new charcoal portrait. Marc Morphew presents a mixed media piece that gives tribute to, and studies the flowers of nature and Earth’s Garden, together with a study of sounds from St Mary’s. Last but certainly not least in terms of new works by local artists, Father Jo Delfgou is creating a special work. The sales commission from purchases made will go towards the repair of the church and Deanery Tower via the Friends of St Mary’s. The Festival commences with a preview at 7pm on Friday 24th June (please email hello@hadleigholdschool.co.uk to request your invitation) and then open 10am – 5pm Saturday 25th June and 1pm – 5pm Sunday 26th June. Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson Hadleigh North Ward Hadleigh Update: Manor Gardens landscaping – I hope many local people have now seen the final stage of the Manor Gardens landscaping. Local residents have been very patient with McCarthy & Stone, following a lengthy delay during COVID, which resulted in relandscaping the riverside site. I made a formal complaint to the Chairman of M & S who within two hours allocated a new senior team member to oversee the project. The results are clearly evident and I thank the residents for their patience with this ongoing issue as well as the tree damage by the riverside after Hurricane Eunice. The whole area really is an example of a successful development for Hadleigh, and I hope for many future generations to enjoy. Weavers Meadow – I have made a site visit to Persimmons development and met with contractors and will directly contact the Managing Director of Persimmons to resolve the ongoing issues surrounding the ‘out of hours’ building taking place on the new development. I should like to take this opportunity of thanking David Brown for taking time to keep me up to date with their anti-social work hours for residents during Bank Holidays. I have referred the matter to Enforcement and Head of Planning. I have made clear it is unacceptable to breach the Babergh’s Planning conditions to the site manager and the Managing Director of Persimmon. This is to ensure they are fully aware of the problems and consequences. I shall also request they tidy up the empty cement bags left blowing around the bypass. No works should take place Sundays or bank holidays. Hadleigh and District Angling Society held an open day at Bullocky Fen Fishery on 28th May 2022. I thank the Society who have my continued support. I am much looking forward having a try at fishing. Thank you to the Angling Society for their continued help and support of regular river maintenance. Weeds - are the responsibility of Suffolk County Council Highways, they treat all kerb lines adjacent to carriageways. I have just received an update from SCC that this year they will be doing two rounds of herbicide treatment (it was one last year), with the programme beginning shortly. Their website will contain an up-to-date schedule once the spraying teams are active. In addition, Babergh have reported the issue to SCC to clear the weed growth, rather than just spray it. CIL - Town and Parish Councils across Babergh and Mid Suffolk have received £1.6 million in the latest round of neighbourhood CIL payment, Babergh’s town and parish councils received a share of £567,726. This paves the way for a range of vital community facilities and projects. Developers are charged Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) when building new homes in the districts – enabling local infrastructure to keep pace with housing growth, as well as supporting the councils’ vision for its communities to be attractive, successful, and connected places for people to live and work. A proportion of this funding is automatically paid to town and parish councils, Hadleigh is eligible for up to 15% of collected funds from their area, subject to a financial cap, with the potential for this to increase to 25% with a successfully adopted Neighbourhood Plan produced by Town Council and they can decide how to spend this money to support the development of our local area – ensuring that the funding best meets the needs of the community. I encourage local organisation to put in a bid for communities wishing to apply for future CIL funding. This bid window will close on May 31 and successful bids will receive their funding decision in Autumn 2022, subject to approval by Babergh Cabinet. Locality Budget Application - The Grand Feoffment is intending to install a defibrillator at the George Street and Benton Street Alms-houses. The total cost for each defibrillator (to include outside cabinets) is approx £2000 and the London Hearts Charity may provide a grant towards the cost of each one. I am happy to contribute to this important facility should any other area within Hadleigh require assistance towards a purchase. Charity Seeks New Trustee Following the retirement of one of its long-serving members, Hadleigh Grand Feoffment Charity seeks a co-opted trustee to serve for a term of five years. This voluntary position is unpaid. A feoffment is a trust and is usually set up to administer charitable donations. The Grand Feoffment Charity, founded in 1497 under the will of Archdeacon Pykenham, is responsible for the upkeep of the town’s 31 almshouses and the Row Chapel, the appointment of new almshouse residents and the management of its tenanted land. The Charity meets approximately every four to six weeks on a Wednesday evening. There are no formal qualifications required but Trustees have a wide range of skills and abilities in order to carry out the Charity’s role. Violet celebrates her 107th birthday at Hadleigh Nursing Home A family spanning five generations came together at Hadleigh Nursing Home to celebrate the 107th birthday of Violet Honeybun. Mrs Honeybun, who has lived at the Kingsley Healthcarerun home since the start of the year, said her big day was made extra special by the appearance at her party of great-great grandchildren Michael, Sophie, Ethan, Freddy and Effy. The daughter of a Thames lighterman and one of eight children, Mrs Honeybun grew up in Erith, in south-east London. After leaving school, she was a civil servant up to the Second World War when she volunteered as an air raid Violet with her great-great grandchildren warden. She had met her future husband Henry in 1935 and they wed in 1938; he joined the Grenadier Guards during the war and was footman to Lord Lascelles, the Queen’s cousin. Mrs Honeybun recalled that when Lord Lascelles married in Westminster Abbey after the war she and her husband were invited to the wedding. After the war she did a variety of jobs, from working in Woolworth’s to being a personnel manager in the Post Office. Mrs Honeybun said she never learned to drive because her husband, who later became a bus driver, drove them everywhere. Her husband sadly passed away on their 40th wedding anniversary. During her life, Mrs Honeybun has enjoyed a variety of interests, from knitting and crochet, making many jumpers for her growing family, to ballroom dancing and travelling. She was also a member of a theatre group, selling tickets and helping with costumes and rehearsals. When asked what was the secret behind her long life, Mrs Honeybun, who lived in her own home with carer support until moving to Hadleigh Nursing Home, said: “Drinking lots of nice, hot cups of tea!” www.hadleighhall.care

Women’s Tour of Britain Hadleigh - Monday, 6th June Hadleigh will see 100 of the world’s best female cyclists racing from Colchester to Bury St Edmunds for stage 1 of the event on Monday, June 6th. It is anticipated that they will come along Benton Street for a sprint section on the High Street at approximately 1 - 1.30pm. Hadleigh Cycling Club has always supported women and girls who already enjoy cycling as well as those who would like to try it to gain in confidence and fitness. One of our members is Maureen Nichols who is 82 and regular cycles and we also have young girls who are competing in regional cycling competitions. In our experience cycling is a safe activity for everyone and promoting safe cycling is a core aim of the club. We are aware that cycling is perceived as male-biased, and we want to change that balance. We believe HCC stands out as a club that supports women as seen by: • the number of women cycling in and around Hadleigh • the strong presence of women on the HCC committee • the personal support and welcome given by the men on rides and on the committee In addition, we are pro-actively supporting women cyclists by: • running coaching events and organised rides that are inclusive and some that are specifically for women • offering a variety of group rides that are led by women riders on Wednesday evenings and Friday mornings. • working to improve cycling facilities in and around Hadleigh • holding sessions on roadside repairs such as changing an inner tube • linking with external support through Suffolk’s Women on Wheels events and the British Cycling Breeze programme. • For some years Hadleigh Cycling Club has run Get Back on your Bike sessions for women of all ages who want to improve their cycling skills. Hadleigh’s ‘Eco Toddlers’ What will the world be like when our children and grandchildren grow up? How do we make sure they care about nature in a world dominated by technology, smart phones and cars? As part of our commitment to involving local people in the environment that we all care about, HEAT is piloting a Forest School for children from 6 months to 5 years where they play, learn and gain confidence in nature, and in all weathers, guided by our qualified Forest School leaders. Once a week over 20 children from 15 families are having a great time in a lovely, quiet spot in one of Hadleigh’s nature reserves. Whether it is looking for bugs, painting with mud, making dens and just enjoying the freedom to explore in a safe woodland with other children, it is a joy to see them having such fun. Developing a respect and love of nature is life long and begins at an early age. We know from the demand for places and the success of our recent Family Day, that Hadleigh families want their children to enjoy and learn about nature. Malting was once a major industry in the town. It was recorded in 1855 that there were between 11 to 15 malt houses operating, and these were scattered throughout the town but especially in Angel Street, George Street, Bridge Street and Benton Street. One of these in Angel Street and termed as a Malting Office, was owned by Thomas Wilson. It was his grandson, Thomas William Wilson, born in 1822, who was carrying on the family business, and sometime after the railway came to Hadleigh in 1847 from the Bentley Junction on the main Colchester to Ipswich line, that this Thomas acquired land near to the railway station. Here he built two new maltings to add to the other maltings which he already owned elsewhere. A significant malting business then evolved at the railway station site to become known as T.W. Wilson & Sons Ltd. Maltsters. The Kersey family who owned much land nearby, also built a malting alongside the station which Wilsons eventually acquired towards the end of the 19th century, and when this malting was added, their scope also included farms and brickworks all under Wilson’s control. Grain dealing and storage then also begun at the Station Road site. During the Victorian era and beyond the business flourished to become one of the largest businesses in Hadleigh. Post World War Two there were to be major changes when in 1946 the malting side of the business was sold to the Associated British Maltsters. It was at this time it is believed, when the huge concrete grain storage silo was built, and which dominated the skyline when viewed from Toppesfield Bridge and Holbecks areas. Boulton Hawker Films, of Hadleigh made a documentary film of the whole malting process. The long era of T.W. Wilson was coming to an end during the 1990’s, and during December 1995 the concrete grain silo was demolished and with the semi-detached house nearby. More general demolition works then took place and the large brick malt houses were converted for residential use. The ends of the malt houses stood adjacent to Station Road, and during the conversion works they were reduced in length to accommodate a public pavement. Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) All eligible patients i.e. 75 plussers and those immune suppressed, were invited to the Hadleigh Health Centre for their spring booster on two Saturdays; one in April and the other in May. Total jabs on those days was 1257. We have a couple of Thursday mornings for those who were not able to attend those vac sessions. In all approximately 2000 patients have now had their booster jabs. Those unable to attend because of Covid will be called for theirs. There are no plans to call other age groups for spring boosters. The mini art exhibition in the Old Pharmacy area has been changed. There is now a fine display of Jane Haylock’s creative textile work. Hadleigh Garden Club We enjoyed a very inspirational talk at our May meeting presented by local garden designer Rebecca Wallman seen here in this picture. After a technical hitch she was able to deliver her talk but without pictures, however we could later view them on a laptop. Her advise and guidance on planting and hard landscaping was invaluable. Hadleigh Walkers Our June walk will be on Saturday 11th. This will be a walk to the North of Hadleigh. We will leave St Mary’s School at 0930 and progress on the Monks path to Noakes Tye Farm, Rushes Fm, College Fm, Lindsey Hall, Kersey Tye and then along the stream to Kersey where were we will finish the walk at the Bell pub a distance of approximately 7 miles. After some refreshment, we will make our way back to Hadleigh via Kersey Vale, Coram Street, Constitution Hill and back via the Toppesfield bridge adding a further 2.5 miles onto the walk. Alternatively, those wishing to get back to Hadleigh more quickly can either arrange lifts or take the well-known and shorter Monks path to return. We will have one short refreshment break on the way to the Bell. As usual we will try and maintain a walking rate of 2.5 mph (4 km/hr) and should arrive at the Bell around 1230. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. Back by popular demand: Ducks and Rafts! Just when you thought it was safe to go down to the Brett, Hadleigh Sea Scouts announce the 12th Great Hadleigh Duck and Raft Race. After a hiatus of 2 years, it is time to rinse out the buoyancy aids, polish the plastic ducks and rebuild the log and barrel rafts. 10am on Sunday, June 26th will mark the start of a sizzling Summer. To enter a crew you need to pull together a motley collection of rowers (4-6 on a raft at one time, but can change members between heats). All Rafts are supplied by the group. Register your raft team at The George or at group@hadleighseascouts.org.uk at £10 per team. Fancy dress, gritted teeth and perseverance have been the mark of the winning teams in previous years - are you made of the right stuff? The Duck Race happens downstream of Toppefield Bridge with barriers such as the lock to be overcome by our intrepid yellow ducks. More immediately, tickets for the ducks (plastic, not real as has been asked in previous years) are available from Keith Avis Newsagents, Scout leaders, or have a chat with us when we’re outside Partridges over the next couple of weekends. The ducks are hard at training, aiming to peak on the 26th June. Our famous Burger and Sausage Sizzlers will be on site along with other refreshments and new challenges await our hardy Rafters. Scouting is flourishing in Hadleigh - come and support us on 26th June and if you’re interested in getting involved talk to our leaders. Regional success for Hadleigh Dolphins Hadleigh Swimming Club are once again celebrating as they saw not one, not two but three swimmers qualify for the Eastern Region Championships this month. Chloe Knight, along with sister Emily and fellow Dolphin Georgia, travelled to Luton to compete in this prestigious competition. All three girls swam brilliantly and qualifying for these championships was a real achievement. Chloe, however, deserves a special mention. Having come in as the third girl at the Suffolk County Championships held in February this year, Chloe qualified for an impressive twelve events at regional level and elected to swim in nine of them. Having never swum in a 50metre pool, Chloe pulled out all the stops and made the final in three of those events. As if that were not accomplishment enough, the youngster came away with a brace of medals – silver in the one hundred metres backstroke and gold in the same stroke over fifty metres. Phil Houghton, chair of Hadleigh Swimming Club committee was full of praise for the girls, the coaching team and indeed the club as a whole. “Hadleigh members swim for lots of reasons and we welcome everyone. As a community, we really feel a collective sense of pride when one of our swimmers does well at a competition, although we celebrate effort and personal bests just as much as medals. Occasions like these however are very special and we thank everyone involved, from the Coaching Team to the Team Manager, the parents and of course, the swimmers.” Head Coach, Mick Evans said that he could not recall a Hadleigh Swimming Club member achieving such a feat at a regional event and that he couldn’t be prouder of her hard work and commitment. He went on the say that this was especially impressive given the disruption to training that the pandemic brought with it. Hadleigh Swimming Club are confident that the story does not stop there for Chloe or the club, which continues to thrive. Watch this space..!

Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Queen’s Garden Party Two years ago, in 2020 I was thoroughly delighted to be invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, only to be subsequently disappointed with the event’s cancellation due to the COVID pandemic. It was postponed again last year, but I was immensely fortunate to be invited again this year representing Suffolk County Council. It was a great day with lovely weather, and where all staff and guides were incredibly helpful and nice. It also gave me the rare opportunity to allow the long-suffering Mrs F (Tracy) a little treat on the back of my privileged position as Hadleigh’s county representative. If ever you get the opportunity to go, I thoroughly recommend you take it – it’s great fun with fantastic cakes. Environment – Cleaner Rivers At the 19th May meeting of Suffolk County Council, the Conservative Group amendment to a Lib Dem motion, was passed unanimously in that we recognise the immense importance of rivers and waterways to the environment, biodiversity, and quality of life in Suffolk and the nation. We believe that every community in Suffolk should Cllr & Mrs Fraser at have access to waters - whether coastal Her Majesty’s Garden Party or inland – that are uncontaminated and safe for the use and enjoyment of both people and wildlife, and to maintain ecological balance. The Council recognises the excellent work going on in river and waterway conservation in our county through organisations such as Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Essex and Suffolk Rivers Trust, The Norfolk and Suffolk Nature Recovery Partnership, and voluntary groups across Suffolk and thanks all involved. Noting that responsibility for rivers and waterways does not sit with Suffolk County Council and therefore a partnership approach is essential, the Council commits to: • Continue to support and engage with environmental trusts and voluntary groups in Suffolk • Investigate what further work could be done, as part of our wider efforts on biodiversity, to continue to address polluting run-off from roads and urban areas in Suffolk • Ask Suffolk Catchment Partnerships if they have established what additional resource they would need to ensure they can put in place those measures they have identified as necessary to reach good ecological status in our rivers • Ensure the Local Nature Recovery Strategy pay due regard to rivers and waterways and, following consultation and engagement, outlines key steps in improving the ecological status of our rivers • Work with our County Farm tenants, and the wider agricultural sector, to encourage good practice • Work with Suffolk’s District and Borough Councils, in their role as Local Planning Authorities, to deliver development with appropriate water treatment and sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) • Write to Local MPs and DEFRA Minister Rebecca Pow MP to (i) highlight the importance of rivers and waterways to Suffolk’s residents, (ii) thank them for their efforts to ensure funding for river projects in Suffolk via Anglian Water, the Environment Agency, the NFU and others, (iii) ask what more can be done to improve the condition of our county’s rivers and (iv) that they continue to raise this vital issue at Westminster. Enrichment Our School Life is finally back to normal and now with SAT’s behind us for this year the children are enjoying trips and local visits plus extracurricular activities. As our Year 6 children prepare with their transition to High School, we also help support them by attending Crucial Crew in Sudbury. Here they learn through different scenarios delivered by the emergency services how to help, keep safe and what to do in emergency or life-threatening situations. During the 3-hour session they learn about fire safety, alcohol and drug misuse, water safety, making a 999 call and how to administer first aid. Whilst we hope they never have to use these skills; in the event they are required they will be better prepared and can make a real difference to those in need. Environment As an Eco School we signed up to be part of the Great British Litter Pick, our older children worked with the younger children around the school site and play park. Groups of children collected rubbish in Buckles Wood and around the village playing field. We collected 10 bags of rubbish in total! We also joined The Big Plastic Count, for a week we recorded at home the different types of plastic we use and how much, the data was submitted to Greenpeace. Sport All our children took part in the Chance to Shine Cricket engagement day. For some it was an introduction to cricket and for others it was a chance to improve their technique, skills and game in the workshops delivered by coaches from Suffolk Cricket. We took our U9’s Girls to a 4 vs 4 Football Festival organised by School Games at Ipswich Town Football Club. The girls were encouraged to make their own decisions in the game but above all it was enabling them to grow in confidence, improve their game and to show respect to each other. The girls were a credit to the school, they showed great sportsmanship and of course they were thrilled when they scored a few goals too! Sports Tokens for School We are collecting the Sports Tokens for Schools being printed daily in the East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star. We hope to be in with a chance of winning a share of £20,000 of sports equipment. Tokens can be brought into the School Office up to Monday 18th July, thank you. Jane Haylock Needlewoman Extraordinaire Jane Haylock’s creative career path has been long, varied and impressive. From the age of eleven she enjoyed the customary embroidering on linen. A move to a small Hertfordshire village in 1966 brought her into contact with the local WI and an opportunity to try other crafts like corn dollies, lace making and some tatty tatting. However, it was to sewing that Jane returned, this time making a range of soft toys from finger puppets to large furry bears. These were not for family consumption but rather to sell at local craft markets. With the advent of new fabrics, fabric paints and different techniques, traditional embroidery styles were soon replaced by less formal and more individual, personal designs. Having relocated to The Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh in 1980, Jane decided to have some formal training in these less formal embroidery styles and to this end, she enrolled at the Suffolk College in Ipswich. Having commuted from Hadleigh for 5 years, Jane successfully completed part 1 and 2 of their City and Guilds Course in Creative embroidery. After a few years’ break, the same college offered various part time degree courses. Jane opted for ‘textiles’ and four years later gained a 2:1 degree in that discipline. On completion of the City and Guilds Course Jane had a large amount of leftover fabric and threads with no motivation to use them and no longer a sound excuse to avoid tedious housework. The problem was soon solved, after a rendezvous with some like-minded ex-students and friends saw the foundation of the Textile Art Group Suffolk now affectionately known as TAGS. This small group agreed to meet once a month with the aim of holding an annual exhibition of their new work. Apart from 2021, this has been a popular event for over twenty years. Jane’s inspiration comes from nature and the Suffolk coast with the occasional cheeky figure putting in an appearance. Although Jane doesn’t draw, she does paint in fibres and fabrics using a wide range of material and techniques to considerable effect. Thank You Alan We would like to say a massive THANK YOU to Hadleigh’s very own magic map man Alan Meredith for his contributions to the Colchester & Ipswich hospital charity eventHospital hero hike which took place on 1st May. We approached Alan back in December to assist us with a walking route which left Colchester hospital and finished at the Ipswich hospital. He gladly took on the challenge, and within a matter of days, delivered to us a 21 mile route with detailed maps and directions taking us through the beautiful Essex and Suffolk countryside. Not only did Alan help us to risk assess each section of the route over the last few months, but he also took part in the main event, walking the whole 21 miles in less than 6 and a half hours!!! 300 people took part in the event which raised over £51,000 for the hospital charity. None of this would have been possible without Alan’s help. We really appreciate the time and effort he has put into our project. At least it has kept him out of trouble for a while! Walking the St Edmund Way Jim Wilding, Anthony Foster, David Rickett and Glenn Abbassi completed this walk from Manningtree to Brandon, in 5 days from the 2nd to 6th May. Jane Harrison joined us for 4 days, and Kevin, a friend of Anthony, started with us on the 2nd but unfortunately, metaphorically, fell by the wayside the following day when we were close to Sudbury as his feet were too sore for him to continue. On Tuesday Sue Taylor walked with us, and on Wednesday and Thursday we were joined by Chris Huntington and her friends Sue and Jane. Our route was from Manningtree to Bures, then to Lavenham, Bury St Edmunds, Thetford and we finished in Brandon on Friday 6th May. The book St Edmund Way states that the distance is 80 miles, but we did a few extra as there were occasions when we inadvertently veered off the route and had to retrace our steps. Also, when one walker disappeared off the radar for about 45 minutes we unsuccessfully searched the field in which the walker had last been seen, the police were contacted and What Three Words to locate the area were requested before the walker reappeared. The longest day, 21+ miles, was between Bury and Thetford. The initial stage was hugely enjoyable walking alongside the River Lark, but the downside was about 9 miles walking absolutely straight along the Icknield Way As we didn’t relish walking for 5 days with heavy rucksacks, it was decided that we would return home after each day’s walk. We have to thank Jim for painstakingly coordinating transport, as it goes without saying that without the support of willing drivers and available vehicles the walk would not have been possible. We owe a great debt to Chris Huntington for taking us to Manningtree and collecting us from Bures, and an even greater debt to Keith Marsland for transporting us in the Hadleigh Sea Scouts’ minibus to Bures and returning us from Lavenham, and for using his own car on Thursday morning to take us to Bury, and the Sea Scouts’ minibus to return us from Thetford that evening. On Wednesday we were very grateful to Jim’s daughter Kate for driving us to Lavenham, and to Jane’s son Jonathan for kindly collecting us from Bury that evening. Friday’s driver in the Sea Scouts’ minibus was Vic Ackerman, with Diane, and they returned us to Hadleigh, our last day having been a stroll in the park as it was only 8 miles to our finish in Brandon! When we planned the walk we agreed that if people would be willing to ‘reward us’ for our efforts we would appreciate a donation t o St Mary’s Church, either to one of the walkers, or online: Sort code: 30-13-52, account 00028556. John’s Jottings

JOHN’S JOTTINGS

Both Alice and John Bloomfield had a very deep love of Hadleigh and its church and Deanery Tower so it seemed appropriate to gather their writings together and produce a book to be sold in aid of the “Friends” of the Church and as a memorial to them both. The result “John’s Jottings”. John Bloomfield was born and brought up in Hadleigh, his mother Alice came to Hadleigh from Reminiscences of John Bloomfield Norfolk to work at “Holbecks”. They each set out and his mother Alice to write about life as they experienced it through times of great change.- sadly neither of them lived to complete the task they had set themselves. Alice covered her girlhood in rural Norfolk and finished with life in service at Holbecks in the 1920’s. John wrote about Hadleigh as seen through a child’s eyes in the late 1930’s and the war, then on into the early 1950’s and joining the RAF. Their anecdotes can perhaps be read as a set of stories. Their memories of events may or may not be quite the same as those of others living through them, nevertheless they reveal interesting local and social history. Hadleigh Choral Society Thank you to everyone who supported our Spring Concert back in April. Our preparations had been hampered by covid but we were determined that the show had to go on and the feedback has been great so thank you to everyone who supported us whether as sponsors, performers or as part of the audience. The knock on effect of covid and these challenging times continue to have an impact on the Society. Having had no income during the pandemic and now a reduced number of members due to shielding or health issues, we are in need of funds. Of course, one of the many joys of singing is that it is free, so why do we need sponsorship and financial support? Well, our concerts are costly. Although the singers are amateur, we use professional soloists and musicians to deliver a first-class performance. There are other associated costs such as venue hire, printing and refreshments that add to the financial burden. Like most community organisations, our committee is made up of volunteers who manage the membership, rehearsals and events. As you would imagine, the team are passionate about the choir and their love of singing, from our basses to sopranos. Singing together is hugely beneficial for our well-being and mental health. The Hadleigh Choral Society has been established in our community for over 100 years and serves as an activity for all ages but particularly the retired. The Society is key to the positive profile of the town and we are proud of our heritage, particularly when visitors to the town come along and enjoy our concerts. A question was raised regarding the old Council Offices on Corks Lane being used for Ukrainian refugees, Councillor Fraser said that this was an office facility which has been unoccupied for 4 years and so is not up to standard. It was then suggested that Angel Court could be used, Councillor Fraser is unsure if any are empty and will report back. A member of public sent in a statement ‘A key element in any plan for Hadleigh Town Council to move from Bronze to Silver recognition as an employer under the Armed Forces Covenant is the number of employees with a service background. This number now stands at two, having been four until quite recently. Since Councillor Knock’s hostility was a very significant factor in the resignations of the Town Council Manager (ex RAF) and the last Mayor (ex RN) how can he advance this process with any credibility, and how can he be a fit person to be Hadleigh Town Council’s Armed Forces Champion? Councillor Knock responded ‘The person who sent the statement in may not be aware that as a Council there was a potential applicant for the Town Council Manager’s job who happened to be a veteran and there was very clear prejudice against this person during the interview process and I have fought tirelessly for an investigation into that, the Councillor who declared that prejudice is unfortunately still here and Councillor Minns used his casting vote to stop any investigation so it might have been hostile but I was only fighting for the right of that veteran who was prejudiced against by Hadleigh Town Councillors. A member of the public read out a statement regarding the legal letter she had received and the time taken to conclude the matter. She also mentioned the felling of trees. Finance (Payment Schedules) Proposed by Councillor Beggerow, seconded by Councillor Gower it was agreed to approve the attached schedule of payments over £500 whilst noting that the Town Clerk will approve any payments under £500 in accordance with the Financial Regulations subject to checking if the payment to G.Clemson was from an invoice or quote.Vote = 7 For, 2 Against, 0 Abstain. As you can see from the photo, not everyone WALKED the May bank holiday walk! However those boys did complete the route to Polstead, congratulations to them for their energy and good humour. Our thanks to all the people who came up to the Centre on 1st May and strode out in our support, raising over £800 towards our running costs. Thank you to the cake makers too, their reputation ensures a good turnout for this fund raiser. Our riders continue to enjoy themselves, and we are slowly adding in clients off the waiting list. Our new pony Ruby is being very useful and well-behaved, she is the perfect size for many of our younger participants. Sadly it takes longer to accommodate adults into the system, their wait is usually longer because of needing bigger mounts. It’s where I try to help out of course. We shall be celebrating her majesty the Queen’s long reign very quietly as the business of grazing occupies the live herd, and we two mechanicals will be switched off and shut up over the Jubilee weekend. Isn’t it amazing what service H.M. has given to this country and the Commonwealth without let-up? What we like best is her knowledge and love of horses of course, so ‘thank you’ Ma’am! Have a great celebration all you humans and enjoy the moment. There goes Kenneth, the smallest dog at SESAW, strutting around the garden like the big boss. He is oblivious to me, quietly sunning myself whilst engaged in a little bird watching. Of course I have no chance of catching the blue tits as they dart in and out of an old nesting box. Those conscientious parents enter with fat grubs and exit with their babies’ white droppings. I’m glad I’m a cat! A robin accompanies Tanya as she loads the wheelbarrow with the dogs’ evening meals. He helps himself to the dinners, flying back and forth to his family. Blackbirds forage about the garden for food, probably descendants of those nursed back to health by Mother. Avian Flu restrictions were lifted at the beginning of May, just in time for our geese. The female is sitting on a clutch of eggs and woe betide anyone who gets too close! Turning to the animals awaiting rehoming, this is an appeal for Polly, a devoted mother cat and her one remaining kitten. She was found in a poly tunnel with five offspring, all but one now rehomed. Why? Because, like me, they are black and so they are overlooked. If you are the person who can offer them a loving home, please leave a phone message or email straight away. It's nearly dark and time for a snack before to patrolling the grounds. One of my ex-SESAW pals who now lives outside Hadleigh says he is tantalised by Nightingales singing at night. He will have to resign himself to dinner in the kitchen, just like me, Ollie (the Black) Cat. Watch out for Oak Processionary Moth Caterpillars which can make people and pets extremely unwell. One of our volunteers had to seek emergency aid for her sick cat recently after it spent time in the garden. The Vet suspected the illness was caused by the nasty insect when the worried owner recalled there was a caterpillar where puss was sitting earlier in the day. French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, I hope you have enjoyed the spring weather, it is so nice to see the flowers and trees coming back to life and the wild life activity. Talking about activity, we had some on our open world donkey day, it was lovely to see families greeting and feeding our donkeys and saying hello to our ponies that live next door to our donkeys. Let’s start with our first thank you, which must go out to Julie, Bex and Laura, they raised £175 in the White Hart in Boxford, great job ladies. Locals in Boxford were also kind enough to fill our donation pot in The Boxford post office, so thank you for your kindness and thank you to Richard who runs the post office for taking our donation pot into his shop. The pot is empty again now, so please carry on putting your coins in for us at French’s when you visit the post office next time, as I always say every £1 counts in keeping our charity going. One of our volunteers Debbie is raising money for French's Care Haven and BNatural by doing her yearly Scarecrow competition, the Grand draw will be in Bildeston for the jubilee weekend. The draw will take place on Friday 3rd June 8pm at Chamberlin Hall Bildeston. Letter from Layham www.layham.org

Parish Council Summary of reports given at the Annual Parish Meeting of 27 April 2022. You can read the full minutes by visiting the Parish website on www.layham.org Suffolk County Council The ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) pilot scheme had started in Holton St Mary; Layham was on the list to trial the scheme in the near future. Suffolk residents could invest in renewables through a groupbuying scheme for solar panels and battery storage. SCC had approved additional investment of £20m in highway drainage and footpaths. Babergh District Council Specialised emergency accommodation units were to be built as part of the Rough Sleepers Accommodation Programme, in urban areas such as Sudbury and Stowmarket.(see www.layham.org for infographic showing Babergh’s key achievements during the year) Budget & Finance The Clerk was in the process of finalising the accounts for 2021/22 which would then go to Suffolk Association of Local Councils for internal audit, before being formally approved by the Parish Council at its June meeting. Councillors had agreed that the precept for 2021/22 should remain at £11,000. The Parish Council continued to receive recycling credits and this money was used for the benefit of the community. Items of expenditure during the year had included the SID speeding device, now operating on Upper Street, and the development of a new website which was now up and running. Emergency Planning There had been 22 yellow weather warnings sent out by the Met Office during the year, concerning Layham; all of these were circulated to Parish Council members to make them aware of possible problems. Two of the warnings moved from yellow to amber, with the result that all Emergency Link Volunteers (ELVs) were informed of the pending bad weather so that they could in turn warn their parishioners. One warning in February for high winds due to storm Eunice moved from yellow to amber to red - the only red warning ever received in Layham. There were some extended power outages and some minor damage to trees, fences and buildings damage, but no injuries. The Emergency Plan would be reviewed during the next few months. Green Team An organised litter pick had been held following the easing of restrictions. 33 volunteers had given up their time to help improve the village; as well as litter picking, village signs were cleaned, grass on Brett Green edged, hedges were cut and wind debris dealt with on the playing field. Councillor Roberts thanked all the volunteers, and the parishioners who collected litter and helped to improve the village throughout the year. Brett Green and the green at Blacksmith’s corner had been kept tidy; other work over the year included the removal of Himalayan Balsam near the playing field, the sweeping away of a blanket of conkers on Overbury Hall Road, clearing of vegetation from road signs, and the cleaning of the war memorial. A generous donation of seed packets meant more wild flowers on the village verges. Ryan Dodson deserved a special mention for the big difference he made collecting litter in Upper and Lower Layham, as part of his work towards his Duke of Edinburgh Award. Village Facilities In readiness for Remembrance Day last year, the War Memorial was carefully cleaned. The village benches were in good order. SCC continued to do a good job of monitoring the grit content of the grit bins and shovels and hand brushes purchased by the Parish Council in 2021 were still in place. Speeding Speeding through Layham (and in particular Upper Layham) had been a major concern for residents for many years. A SID (Speed Indication Device) had been installed on Upper Street; the posts for mounting the SID were erected in August 2021, with one being positioned outside Windy Ridge monitoring traffic approaching from Raydon. Suffolk Highways policy required SIDs to be moved regularly between different locations; the device was thus being moved from one post to the other every 7 to 10 days, thanks to several volunteers. Highways & Footpaths The PC continued to report potholes, but it seemed that reports made by members of the public had as much, if not more, effect; parishioners were urged to use the ‘Highways Reporting Tool’ on the SCC website. The footpath network was in satisfactory condition and well used. The surfaced path between the Mill and Church Lane still required attention and the PC would continue to press for that. In addition to the installation of the SID device (see above) 30mph signs on bins, paid for from parish resources, had made a difference. Completion of the Quiet Lanes project, in partnership with Shelley village and funded by a SCC grant, was imminent. Allotments The six allotment plots situated at Gardeners Close were all occupied and very productive. Under the terms of their agreements, allotment holders were not allowed to sell produce from the site; nevertheless neighbours and friends continued to be well looked after! In 2021 four of the allotment holders held a friendly competition and grew sweetcorn – just as the crop was almost ready to pick a visitor arrived … probably a deer or a badger. Some you win, some you lose! Local History Membership of the Layham Local History Group remained at nine. A year ago the group was challenged by the Layham Parochial Church Council to create an exhibition in the church to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee over part of the long weekend Bank Holiday of 2-5 June 2022. This challenge was accepted and the group had been working all year to find and organise pictures and texts about life in the village during the 70 years from 1952 – 2022; these

would be brought together and put on show on 3 and 4 June. Friends of St Andrew’s There were 30 members, including life members and also the families of family members. Given Layham was a village of several hundred people, this was disappointingly low. There was currently approximately £5K in the bank account to help pay for things to improve the Church, as requested by the Parochial Church Council. Two possible items would be replacing the flagpole and a gate in the churchyard wall to enable easy access to the Village Hall (for the WCs, as the Church would never be able to afford its own). A fund raising event was planned for September 2022 - details would be published when finalised. Everyone was encouraged to join the Friends (forms available on the PC website: www.layham.org). PCC Christine Hempstead, Churchwarden, said she was pleased that the past year had been an improvement on the previous one due to the changing Covid rules. Regular services were being held again including Morning Worship, consisting of a more informal service along with coffee, croissants etc on the third Sunday of the month. Services were held on every fourth Sunday, alternating with All Saints, Shelley. It was hoped to re-start Coffee, Cake and Chat mornings later in 2022. The annual Remembrance Service was held, as well as the Hunt Carol Service. The annual plant sale was held in May which was very well attended and there was an open day at the Mill and the money raised was donated to the Church. Several issues had arisen during the year, including a damp patch in the corner of the church caused by a problem with the roof. The flagpole was in an unusable state and it was hoped to be able to replace it during the current year; however as the Church was a listed building, there was a procedure to be followed. Christine thanked John English for continuing to provide car parking facilities and John Cryer for raising the flag throughout the year, until it became unsafe. She thanked Richard Cranfield for his hard work cutting back the branches on the trees, as well as mowing the grass, and Brian Hempstead for dealing with the overgrown areas all around the churchyard. She also thanked people for their help and support during the past year, including those who had cleaned, arranged flowers and carried out other jobs. Playing Field Management Committee A programme of essential activities and maintenance had continued over the past year e.g. the 120 Club; grass cutting; mower maintenance; tree felling; hedge and willow dome management; keeping the small play equipment box in order. A very helpful clean-up session around the boundaries was achieved on the village spring clean day. Everyone had played a part, especially Simon Bewsher for organising the 120 Club and Graham Coleman for cutting the grass. Village Hall Management Committee A new VH Management Committee had been elected at the AGM in June 2021; David Pratt and Richard Cromwell had remained on the committee to assist with the handover during the first year. Several maintenance issues had been resolved, including lead flashings on the flat roof and faulty lighting. Committee members had carried out other works and cleaning, although a cleaner had now been employed. Events Group The Layham Community Events Group was formed about four years ago when some like-minded friends wanted to raise funds for local charities and further unite the communities of Upper and Lower Layham. Core membership of the group was unchanged during the pandemic and meetings were held in gardens when permitted; however, no events were held due to risks of infection. Basking in the success of the Christmas Fayre in 2018, the aim for 2022 was to organise a Fete to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Serious planning got underway in October 2021 and an ambitious programme was envisaged. A total of forty people had been recruited to run the fete on June 5. Local businesses had been generous, amongst them The Marquis, The Queen’s Head, Hadleigh Castings, ID Plumbing and Love Refills. Other residents had also donated prizes for events and competitions or donated money anonymously, and several people were lending equipment. The Parish Council and Babergh District Council had also given generous financial support. Funds raised would be primarily for the Playgroup and the Church. Dog bags in hedges More and more bags containing dog fouling are being found thrown into hedgerows. If you own a dog PLEASE clean up after it and carry the bag to the nearest disposal point – there are five in the village - or use your own black bin when you reach home. THANK YOU Recycling glass Babergh Council is campaigning to improve glass recycling. Glass is not accepted in household recycling bins as the Materials Recycling Facility at Great Blakenham, where the bins are taken for sorting, is unable to separate glass from other materials. Glass mistakenly placed in household recycling bins costs Suffolk around £500,000 a year – which has to be found from you, the council tax payer. Lorry crews will be on the look-out and recycling bins containing glass may not be emptied. We have a recycling facility in our Parish which makes it reasonably easy to recycle glass. Please use it. Thank you.

We have gazebos, the village hall and several marquees, so rain won’t be a problem. The Children of Layham can claim their jubilee mugs and we can look after these until the end of the fete. It was good to see the hall busy with so many people, some stopping for a cup of tea of coffee and a chat. The children have really enjoyed their walks down the lane and we have been able to bring lots of learning into our walks. We are now enrolling for September playgroup sessions and will be holding an Open Afternoon on Thursday 16th June 1:00 – 2:30pm. Judge and Exhibitor at Royal Horticultural Society Shows Jim Marshall spent over 25 years as a National Trust Gardens Advisor, now retired he holds National Plant Collections of both Malmaison and Perpetual Flowering Carnations. Jim is Vice Chairman and Trustee of Plant Heritage, a charity dedicated to the conservation of garden plants, also a Vice Chairman of the RHS Herbaceous Plant Committee Jim and Sarah will be bringing some specimen plants to show us in addition to visual projection. We can’t quite believe it, but this year Hadleigh Community Choir is celebrating 10 years of bringing music and fun to our wonderful town. As it is such a special anniversary for us we have decided to bring you our favourite songs from the last 10 years in a wonderful day of music on Saturday 16th July, where we will be singing songs that have been chosen by our choir members past and present. Sat 16th July at United Reformed Church, Market Place, Hadleigh. Matinee tickets £5. Evening tickets £8 including finger buffet (under 12s free). Hadleigh Community Primary School Year 3 have recently been on two exciting and informative trips. The first was to St Edmundsbury Cathedral & Abbey Gardens. Children learnt what it was like to be a pilgrim, as well as finding out about signs & symbols relating to Easter. It was fascinating to see what was left of the original abbey & how huge it once was - which made the cathedral look tiny in comparison. After Easter, the children had the opportunity to visit the Suffolk Showground at Trinity Park. Highlights were the incredibly cute baby animals, food tasting & being so close to a massive combine. Children were fascinated by the sheep shearing and a tractor that drove itself! This trip to the Farm & Country Fair concluded the children's learning about how land is used in our area. Year 4 had a great time on their school trip to Sutton Hoo. We learnt about Mrs Pretty and the discovery of the Saxon treasures. We even got the opportunity to become archaeologists and uncover some hidden relics! Recycling Here at HCPS, we are making great strides at practicing sustainability and mindfulness in our daily actions. Both adults and children can do their part to help our precious planet. HCPS participates in the Terracycle program, where crisp packets, biscuit wrappers and pens are repurposed into new items. Our Eco Yoga lunchtime club has been a super success; teaching various fun yoga lessons, always with an eco theme and often including an eco-craft. Here's to a healthy and happy planett...we all can make a difference.

Hadleigh Art Club We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those that ask, we try to give advice/guidance/constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group... Although restrictions have been eased, please do not join us if you have, or have been in contact with someone who has Covid. We will welcome you once you are clear. We charge £3 per session to cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5, due in May. There is a list of weekly topics but these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Tuesday 10 May 2022 1 WELCOME The Chair welcomed everyone. 2 REPORT OF THE LAST MEETING Accepted 3 MATTERS ARISING None 4 STANDARD UPDATES 4.1 HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL The People’s Project: Ideas still sought and should be submitted by 23 May 2022. Full details can be found on the HTC website. Grants/Donations: 2022/23 Scheme is now open for applications. All details & forms on HTC website. Next grants approval meeting, end June. Annual Town Meeting: 7pm Monday 23 May at St Mary’s. Anything you wish to raise, come along or email the Town Clerk. Armed Forces Day: 23 June. Serving personnel parade to Market Place – be there by 4pm. Serving personnel and dignitaries will then have a private reception at c.5.30pm. Attractions available for the community: climbing wall, majorettes and other events. See HTC website for details. The George Street bench is being repaired and hopes to be returned to site in June. 4.2 BABERGH & MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL Angel Court: Boundary stones with Angel Street still need re-instating and some need replacing. Women’s Tour Cycle Race: Monday 6 June. The race should sprint through Hadleigh at c. 1pm. Rolling road closures and parking restrictions will be in place. Full details from Babergh website - already sent to members of HCF. Community encouraged to come along to the High Street and cheer them through. Unsightly barriers in Magdalen Road car park: Jan Devey continues to encourage BDC to deal with these. 4.3 VISIT HADLEIGH Website: Remember to let Jane or Stuart know of any planned events so they can be uploaded. Visitor Information: Regrettably we have to confirm that there will be no provision of visitor services with a walk-in VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE this year. Despite our efforts to secure a ‘Pop Up’ or a ‘Hosting’, neither proved possible. An appropriate venue can only be negotiated for this provision. Hands Off Hadleigh – The story of the 26-year Tesco Campaign is ready to be produced but as with the other exhibitions we were able to present we have yet to secure an exhibition venue. The Wool Towns Information Providers leaflet will be updated and agreed with the other Wool Towns. The aim of the leaflet is to inform visitors in the area where they can speak to local people. Hadleigh’s entry for this year will provide the contact for our website and The Town Guides. Hadleigh Town Guides: We have been working with a new trainee Guide and it is hoped that Sheila will soon be in a position to join us, providing town walks and support as an Exhibition Guide. Hadleigh in Bloom: Cycle planters have been filled with geraniums. Hanging baskets will go up 17 May in time for the Hadleigh Show. As ever, please contact Jane or Stuart if you are interested in any community gardening projects. 4.5 HADLEIGH & BOXFORD PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP Covid Boosters: 1,257 jabs have been given through invited sessions in April and May to those who are 75+ or immune suppressed. Including boosters given during Practice hours, some 2,000 have now been administered. There are no plans to invite other age groups for Spring boosters. Volunteers can now take a break until the autumn! There is no need to call the Practice regarding boosters – anyone due for a jab will be invited/notified. The mini art exhibition at the Practice has been changed, displaying some of Jane Haylock’s textile work. Certain items are for sale to the benefit of the Practice’s charitable trust. 4.6 St MARYS CHURCH Bars and safety rails complete. Cost being some £7k – most of which has been sponsored. Display Cabinet for the upper vestry is ready and due to be fitted. The Reordering Committee met with the architects to discuss the route we have come through to the current plans and how best to move forward. Emergency access / egress: It was noted that all doorways in the church have doors which open inward and there are various level changes / steps to be negotiated. These issues are being taken into account whilst planning for emergency evacuations. It was suggested our postcode be clearly displayed (probably near the defibrillator) for use in emergencies. The Lime Tree Project information board is due to be replaced with a second board outlining some of the scandals of Hadleigh which will include institutions and buildings still in evidence today. Deanery Tower: Various options are under discussion. Historic Dean’s Library will be refurbished by the Diocese. Plans for training Tower guides are underway. Updates will come as plans progress. It was pointed out that, mainly from a financial perspective, the sustainable future of all three Grade 1 listed buildings (St Mary’s, The Deanery Tower and The Guildhall complex) are under threat. Floral displays by Hadleigh Flower Club, Saturday evening concert by the

Hadleigh Community Choir and a pop-up art gallery hosted by Hadleigh Old School (see AOB) 4.7 HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) Forest School: The sixweek pilot started last week with 15 families, 23 children and two teachers. Thanks offered to HTC for funding and BDC for providing the site on The Fuzz. Family Action Day: was successfully run on 23 April with 12 families and c. 20 children helping plant 500 wildflower plugs (donated by BDC) at the new cemetery extension. Children also enjoyed a session looking at invertebrates from the river and a guided nature walk. MP & Minister’s meeting with DEFRA: HEAT met with Rebecca Pow – Minister, James Cartlidge – MP and officials from DEFRA. 30 minutes spent discussing how DEFRA could support community groups, like HEAT, to get involved in improving the quality of our rivers. Further discussions have also taken place. Swifts are back in town and it is hoped that with the encouragement of call kits, they will make use of the newly placed boxes. HEAT will have a stand at Hadleigh Show. 5 AOB Tidy Town Volunteers litter pick on Monday and Friday mornings each week. If you are interested to join the team for a litter pick, please see Hadleigh Town Council for details of where to meet. Gear will be provided. No commitment, just turn up when you can. Defibrillators: Londis’ defib will be in place in c.3 weeks after which it will be registered with the BHF so it can be added to their website. ACL is looking at three training dates for 2022 for both Defib and basic CPR training for the public, plus a possible formal session for local businesses. Clay pigeon shooting on Holbecks’ land: There was concern that visitors may unwittingly walk into the area but it is private land and within prescribed distances from all public footpaths and all relevant precautions are in place. Supporting people with Dementia: It was noted that the provider, Dementia Together, is no longer available. Everything is now handled by the Alzheimer’s Society running a national, not a local, presence. A lot of information is now only available over the internet as there is no local office and no leaflets easily available. If help is needed, get in touch with Dementia Connect, part of the Alz Society. HTC has offered to put new flyers up on their noticeboards. A speaker from the Alz Society may be engaged to explain fully the changes that are being made and how to connect more easily for help in future. Mediaeval Wall in Churchyard: John Cunningham has been doing a wonderful job removing the ivy from the brickwork of the wall, which has gained new importance since the felling of the lime tree. Sally Cook has also spent a lot of time cleaning the old church door which is now visible in the wall. Thanks were offered to them both. Town Twinning: The Mayor informed the meeting that our French friends are coming to Hadleigh this weekend. Hadleigh Old School: Hosting “Village Hall Matters” an original comedy by The Brett Valley Collective 7.30pm from 9-11 June. Tickets from The Flying Guardsman - suggested £5 donation per seat with profits going to CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably). Licensed bar & some interactive entertainment. “Midsummer Festival of Flowers, Music and Arts” in St Mary’s on 25/26 June. Hadleigh Old School will have a pop-up art gallery in the South Chapel to showcase work by a number of local artists across a range of media including watercolours, sculpture, textiles and photographs complementing the floral and musical theme of the festival, in support of The Friends of St Mary’s and the Deanery Tower. Friars Road: Grateful thanks were offered to Les who has single-handedly cleared weeds from the length of Friars Road. Some of the recent new signings at Northampton Saints were in town over the weekend of the 7th May and offered to join Hadleigh RFC for their youth training session. We were lucky enough to have six of them at the club on Sunday 8th May joining in with training sessions which included warm up drills, rugby tennis, 5-meter channel evasion and post kicking. “We had a great morning of fun” said Hanisi Young, U7’s tag player. And she wasn’t alone in her praise of the event as Harry Gallagher, of the joint Hadleigh & Sudbury U16’s, also said “It’s great learning new skills from players who are at the top of their game in their age group.” One of the new Saints signings, Aston Gradwick-light, lives in Hadleigh and started his rugby career at Hadleigh RFC mini’s and up to the U12’s from which he moved to Colchester RFC. “It’s great to see these young signings at Northampton Saints taking time out to help the youngsters of Hadleigh RFC”, said Youth Chairman Marcus Gallagher. Charlie Warburton, HRFC Chairman said “Hadleigh RFC have had a rich seam of success with their youth section in the past with youngsters such as Boo Grimsey, Ryan Steer, Cal Dawson, Pat Bray, Adam Moore, Zach Kerr and Jordan Robinson all playing for Suffolk RFU. Additionally, Harvey Clements has represented London at Rugby League, Arthur Romer-Lee played for the Scottish Exiles and Exeter Uni, Toby Braybrooke and Oscar Farrow have represented Eastern Counties and, even higher, Aiden Engelbrecht, Toyo Ongelese and Oscar Farrow have been part of the Northampton Saints Youth Academy themselves.” It was also great timing for the club as the Hadleigh U14’s, who have two players on the Northampton training programme, won the Suffolk Plate. The Northampton boys were at hand to present the trophy to the Hadleigh team. Her Club has 30 members but in the Kyiv district there are about 1000 members who have been organised into teams to help the war effort as much as possible. During the fighting in and around the Capital they were delivering food and other aid to front line areas, shelters and hospitals. There was and still is a large demand for tourniquets for wounded troops and civilians. During March they provided hot meals, clothing etc for 10000 railworkers who were working around the clock taking supplies to other front line cities and bringing back refugees. These workers did not leave their posts for the whole month. Whilst Britain has supplied much aid many other European countries have sent supplies such as Portugal, Spain, Italy and Poland. However, they can buy most items more cheaply from neighbouring countries such as Poland, Moldova and Ukraine itself so money is preferred to goods now. They have designated teams covering various areas around Kyiv and are making regular deliveries of food, clothing , water filters and medicines even collecting specific orders for medicines! Fuel has also been bought for Ambulances, supply trucks and buses. There has been a problem with refugees going to western Ukraine etc leaving pets behind on the streets and Rotarians are collecting these and providing them with shelter and care. Now, refugee centres are being set up and Rotarians are helping to man and equip these with the accommodation being mainly in Schools and University buildings where there are showers and other amenities. Drinking water is a problem in most areas as Russian bombing has disrupted supplies but Rotary has linked with another charity to obtain supplies of water filters to help purify the water that is available. Oksana’s presentation brings everyone who sees it very close to the reality of war and the fear and danger of everyday life in Ukraine at the moment. She has promised to send regular updates of the situation over there and I will pass these onto you as they arrive. Hadleigh Rotary likes to think that its recent small contribution is already helping Oksana and her fellow Rotarians in their brave and essential work . British Rotarians have already sent more than £2million to Ukraine with more to follow. Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School Mini Monsters Visit - Our Early Years and Key Stage 1 class were visited by the Mini Monsters company. They were introduced to a variety of creatures, learning all about their natural habitat and behaviours. We met a giant African land snail, an African millipede, a tarantula, a corn snake and a crested lizard. For many children this was their first opportunity to come face-to-face (literally in some cases) with these creatures. All of the children were given the opportunity to hold or touch them during the talk. Some of the teachers were even brave enough to take part too. One of the biggest surprises was that an African millipede felt like a hairbrush moving across our hands. After School Club Excitement - this term we are expanding our After School Club offer to include Street Dance which includes Rock and Roll and freestyle disco. The excitement has been palpable across the school with popular tunes heard from every corner. The children have been learning new moves to the music and ensuring they fit with the beat. Stoke By Nayland Golf Club Thursday 28th April Stoke by Nayland ladies played the Coronations Foursomes Competition on Thursday on the Gainsborough course. Foursomes format is a pairs competition where you choose between yourselves who drives off the odd number holes and who drives off the even and from then on you play alternative shots with just the one ball. Katy Williamson and Janet Bettle dovetailed beautifully and got an amazing 40pts to win the competition and go onto the next round. In 2nd place were Hilary Cairns and Liz Spencer with 39pts ocb and in 3rd place Sue Spittlehouse and Sue Latham 39pts Ocb. 4th place Betty Cox and Jill Pottle with 38pts. Saturday 30th April The weekend ladies played the 2nd round of the Lilian Osborne Competition on the Gainsborough course. With the continued dry weather the ladies are enjoying the extra run on their ball and some great scores 1st Jill Pottle 38pts; 2nd Tracey Dickens 37pts; 3rd Janet Bettle 35pts Bronze Team Stoke by Nayland ladies Bronze team played against Upminster Golf Club on Tuesday on the Constable course. The ladies fought hard and were rewarded with a 4/1 win. The Dick Chalmers Trophy was held at Stoke-by-Nayland GC on Sunday 8th May on the Gainsborough course. This is an annual event held in memory of club member Dick Chalmers who sadly lost his battle against Prostate Cancer a few years ago. The event is organised by John Walker and is attended by Dick’s wife Pat. 115 members entered the event with prizes for best team, best male and best female.

Poetry Corner A Horse and a Tractor A tractor was mechanically mowing the meadow where farm horses once worked and grazed. A lonely horse watched from its neat enclosure, sometimes snacking from a slow hay feeder. No space for horses to trot or gallop in the pretty painted paddock by the meadow.
