Hadleigh Choral Society at Snape It’s a cold, dark January evening but the Ansell Centre is buzzing with music and light as the eighty strong choir sing for the 15th time...‘and ye of the past… must…DIE!’ We’re rehearsing Edward Elgar’s The Music Makers and the timing is tricky to say the least, but we are determined to get it right! We are Hadleigh Choral Society and we are swapping our usual concert venue of St Mary’s Church for the illustrious surroundings of Snape Maltings Concert Hall on March 24th 2018 at 7.30pm. Rehearsals for the Big Concert are well underway and we‘re all so excited about singing two amazing Elgar works, The Music Makers and Spirit of England. The Music Makers is Elgar’s setting of an Ode by Arthur O’Shaughnessy, celebrating the influence of the creators of art and music on the shaping of the future. Elgar writes some wonderful melodic passages in this piece, but at other times the choir is expected to produce fire and passion in their singing. Spirit of England is based on the war poetry of Laurence Binyon, and is particularly poignant in this centenary year of the ending of WW1. It contains the lines made famous by repeated recitations at remembrance services, ‘they shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old...we will remember them’. Hadleigh Choral Society will be joined by the Kelvedon Singers and the Colchester Symphony Orchestra for this concert, all under the baton of our Musical Director, Christopher Phelps. We are also looking forward to welcoming back the well-known and much respected Piano Soloist, John Lill. John and the Choir have a long history of collaboration and it is a delight to have him playing with us once again. Tickets are selling well and are available from Choir members, the Snape Box Office (01728 687 110) and website. Prices are £22, £18, £15. An audience coach will leave Hadleigh at 4.30pm, arriving at Snape in time to have refreshments before the concert. The return coach will leave Snape at about 10.15pm. The cost of the coach is £6.50, phone Gill Riddle on 01473 670140 to book your place. Alternatively, email Liz Turnbull at re.turnbull@btinternet.com for any additional information you require. We would love to see you at our concert, our aim is to provide you with an exciting, uplifting performance and, of course, to be note perfect!

A Review of Hadleigh Community Choir’s Concert ‘In and Out of Love’

The first thing to say about the concert on February 17th is simply that it was a lot of fun and the audience loved it. A friend, coincidentally a singer and a musician, and I went along not knowing what to expect and came away buzzing about it. Sarah Gallop, the Musical Director captured the audience immediately with her confident, relaxed style and gentle humour, and the choir’s obvious enthusiasm and well-rehearsed numbers just took it on from there with some lovely and intricate harmonies. Graham Holmes supported well as accompanist, blending nicely and playing a moving solo piece. The choir ranged over musicals and Gershwin through modern standards like Something Stupid and Stand By Me to a Russian folksong that had the audience clapping along. Along the way we got humour, solos, and Sarah Gallop singing What I Did For Love from A Chorus Line. Well, it was a Valentine’s concert, after all. The concert raised funds for Riding for the Disabled and The Shelley Centre and if you weren’t there you missed a really a good evening. Tony Dewhurst

The Porch Project continues to go from strength to strength and on the evening of Wednesday 24th January our new premises in Hadleigh were officially declared open by The Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, Clare Countess of Euston. The Porch Project was set up in 2009 having identified a need for youth provision in Hadleigh. It has since extended into Great Cornard and now employs three full time youth workers. It aims to provide excellent quality youth work so that the young people of Hadleigh, Great Cornard and the surrounding parishes have the opportunity to achieve their full potential in life. The evening kicked off with a short speech by James Buckle, Chair of the Trustees, who thanked the many people who have helped the Porch Project over the years, particularly mentioning Babergh District Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner, Tim Passmore. He also talked about the phenomenal support from local businesses, charitable trusts and private individuals. After the official opening, kindly performed by Clare, Countess of Euston, Ben Day, Lead Youth Worker gave a short introduction to one of the current learning programmes, Venture. Venture has been a huge success in its pilot year. 30 young people took part in the programme. Many of them had little experience in the outdoors and they showed great resilience and perseverance, learning a host of new skills and gaining in confidence and independence. They were all presented with a certificate by Clare, Countess of Euston. Ben finished the presentation by saying “Venture 2018 will run for twice the length and have two overnight camps. We have capacity for more people to join the programme and we aim to further expand the skillset and teamwork elements that the pilot programme has instilled”. The Porch Project runs two evening Weekly drop in sessions in Hadleigh and one in Great Cornard. It also offers smaller group sessions focusing on: female members of the Project with the Inspirations programme; outdoor adventure skills with the Venture programme; preparation for employment with the Horizons Programme; homework; cookery, to promote healthy eating emotional health and social wellbeing; volunteering, IT skills and online safety. To continue providing services for young people we need more volunteers to support our paid team of 3 youth workers. How much time you give is up to you, once a week, once a month, whatever fits in with you. This is a great way to meet people and support your community. Matthew Gallo Independent Mortgage Adviser Have you considered where you and your family would stand financially with your cost of living and mortgage expenses, in the event of death, diagnosis of a critical illness, or being out of work due to accident or sickness resulting in loss of income? There are straightforward solutions to secure your own and your family’s financial well-being under such circumstances, so consider these: 1. Life Insurance. In the event of death, life insurance can match your mortgage liability, clear your mortgage debt and retain the family home - as well perhaps, as providing an additional sum to maintain the standard of living of your dependants. Generally speaking, with a high-profile insurance company, this can be accomplished for a modest monthly cost. 2. Critical Illness Cover. In addition to life insurance on death, you also need to think about how you would clear your mortgage debt and how to maintain your financial commitments, in the event that you were diagnosed with a critical illness. After diagnosis, advances in medical research and surgeons’ expertise, often see individuals surviving subsequent treatment or surgery involved, and indeed may make a 100% recovery, but a return to work may be out of the question - either for a period of recuperation, or sometimes at all. Recuperation needs to be stress-free, and financial stress can see a relapse into illness once more. Critical Illness Cover allows this calm recovery, by paying a tax-free lump sum, immediately on diagnosis of a specified illness, to clear debt and free monthly expenditure pressure. The least expensive premium, should not be the deciding factor with Critical Illness Cover – you can’t mess around with this type of cover, and independent advice should be sought. 3. Income Protection. You need to consider the issue of long-term ability to meet financial commitments should you fall ill, be involved in an accident, or become disabled. You may not be critically ill, thus not meriting a claim under a critical illness policy, but nonetheless be sufficiently unwell/injured to be unable to be at work, and this might be for a short or long-term period. This type of cover is designed to meet monthly expenditure and mortgage payments, by paying a pre-determined tax-free income for the duration of your illness. If you have employment related contractual ‘sick-pay’ benefits, clearly this is taken into consideration, and this private and personal cover should typically be structured to start when your company benefits stop. You may justifiably ask why you would need both Critical Illness Cover as well as Income Protection – they are not mutually exclusive types of cover. Critical Illness Cover, covers specified illnesses with a lump-sum claim on diagnosis – for instance cancer, heart disease or stroke. Income Protection, pays an income during a period of incapacity and inability to work due to illness or injury which may not be critical. My IT software and sourcing system, allows me to me to source and recommend the most appropriate insurers and products, based on your age, health, occupation and pastimes, to get you the cover you need. Food Bank Donations ‘Overwhelming’

(L to R) Lin Slaughter, Liz Wilson, Angela Wiltshire, Sue Monks Fidelis ladies responded with gusto to the recent appeal in the Hadleigh Community News for donations to the local Food Banks. Sue Monks and Angela Wiltshire, who made the appeal, were invited to the club’s monthly meeting to collect the many items the members had brought along. They were overwhelmed by the size and variety of the collection. Sue and Angela thanked the group most sincerely for their generosity and confirmed that the goodies will be added to the central food banks in Ipswich and Stowmarket. If necessary, these centres will also help any local families.

ZOR Boutique Here at Zor Boutique we have been busy buying for the current season and the season ahead. We have recently received an order of lovely chunky knitwear including oversized jumpers and cardigans. These are proving to be popular with our current customers as the weather is still very cold at the moment, and other stores are selling all spring summer now. However we have had a big order of Spring Summer Brakeburn arrive which is also proving to be very popular, with those thinking ahead or those who have abroad holidays booked soon. The new Barkeburn pieces include beautiful cotton dresses, shirts and thin jumpers. The most popular so far has been the coral shells print dress pictured. We have been extremely busy attending the trade shows in Birmingham and London, finding new suppliers to offer our customers something different that you don’t see everywhere. We managed to find a supplier of leggings which will be in store from the middle of March. We get asked a lot for leggings as we sell many tunics and dresses which layer up perfectly over leggings. We also visited some of our existing suppliers, one of which had some great metallic leather bags, which will be arriving in March. These will be great for the summer as they sparkle beautifully in the sunshine. We hope to see you soon in store to browse our new collections. 07969 525859 www.zoronline.com. zoronline.sales@gmail.com Kersey Mill, Stone Street IP7 6DP - Open Mon-Sat 10am to 4.30pm

Sudbury Memory Walk Success Back on a very cold and windy day in October 2017, 253 community members of all ages and ability united against dementia to walk the Sudbury Memory Walk. The weather was kind, the rain held off, and while some were blown along the route the sun peeped through to keep spirits high. The huge crowd were treated to coffee and cake all along the route while raising funds for two groups that were at risk of closing due to funding cuts. The Decaf Project at the Bridge Sudbury and Ansell Memories CafĂŠ, Hadleigh both received a cheque for ÂŁ1978.08 each to support families to live well with dementia. Jerry community volunteer behind the project says, “I was delighted to see so many people had joined us to walk. We had 100 more than year one and we have now agreed this will become an annual event so look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday 6th October 2018â€? #thememorywalkman You are encouraged to save the date and join us again in 2018. The Edmund Octet

March evenings can still be long, before Spring is firmly under way; to bring cheer, The Edmund Octet (numbering 12 actually) together with soloists and accompanists, are bringing the wit and fun of Gilbert & Sullivan to Lavenham on Saturday 17th March, with selections of favourites from H M S Pinafore, Iolanthe, Pirates of Penzance, Ruddigore, and the Mikado. This event is support of 'Little Hall' in Lavenham, a unique cloth makers house built originally back in the 1390's, (and which is open thanks to a willing band of volunteers 7 days a week, from April to October). Tickets £10 each, including a programme and interval refreshments are available from outlets including Retail Therapy, the Tourist I.C., and the Village Hall in Lavenham; also Café Como in Brent Eleigh; and Cockfield Stores; or on the door, before the Concert starts at 7.30pm, the doors open at 7pm. Much fun on a cool evening, and in a good cause too! Michael Warner

Pause For Thought I hadn’t the heart to ask for it back – his wife was so pleased. Sweet smelling candles with hand carved soapstone holders were very well received by The Milkman’s wife. Yet that lovely gift was never intended for her. My friend was passing by, and rather than risk her catching my cold, we arranged I would leave her Christmas present on the doorstep. Although a named label was attached, unfortunately one of the names was different by just one letter to The Milkman’s own -so he was sure the gift was for him. My friend was not amused. Nor was I, when my neighbour’s labrador dog visited my garden and utterly destroyed the replacement present I left on the doorstep. Even worse, the second parcel had the addition of a Birthday gift inside, too. Ridiculous, but utterly true. If only the gift had reached the intended recipient. Do you know you are the intended recipient of an indescribably wonderful gift? The Loving God gave the gift of His Son to a needy world. Jesus lived a perfect life in a sinful world, and chose to sacrifice His own life on a cruel cross, so you may receive the gift of eternal life. Jesus did it all and we just have to accept His incredible gift by sincerely asking for His forgiveness. “For God so loved the world, He gave His One and Only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3.16 The Bible.

March’s walk on Saturday 10th will be a pleasant 7.5 mile circular walk starting and finishing at Dedham. We will meet at 0930 in the main Dedham car park which is on the left hand side as you enter from the A12 about 100 yards after the Dedham bridge. Please note that a £2 parking fee will be required. Our route starts by Dedham Mill and follows the river towards Stratford St Mary then Rookery Farm, Monks Lane, Freeman’s Farm, Dedham, Judas Gap Weir, Flatford Mill and back to Dedham via the Stour Valley Path. This is a delightful walk with lots of rivers, woods and open country to enjoy. We should be back at the car park around 12.30 pm. If anyone is without transport we will do our best to help out but it is essential that you contact us at least a week before the walk to allow time to organise lifts. Those booking lifts will leave at 0900 from the usual place at St Mary’s School on Stonehouse Rd. Everyone is welcome, including very well behaved dogs (there are a number of fields of sheep to pass through). New Plant Centre Full to Bursting! Building a plant centre that joins the shop has been on our ‘to do’ list since we rebuilt Hollow Trees farm shop some 11 years ago in 2007. Somehow it just never got to the top of the list. That was until last year when, at last the time was right. Having finally achieved the attention it deserved we now have a small, but perfectly formed plant centre and it’s full to bursting with lots of hardy plants that can go out into your garden right now. Next time you visit Hollow Trees Farm take a, look at what’s on offer. As the seasons progresses we will continue to keep the new plant centre stocked with our own home grown bedding, patio and herbaceous perennial plants. It’s going to be a great year so why not trust your local gardening experts to keep your gardens and patios looking magnificent. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre What a great start to the Spring term we had! Nine new riders joined us and I was able to help in their assessments. The picture shows Dario, one of our new Monday riders, having his assessment with Fiona. Welcome to all our new riders and good luck with your therapy. Thanks to the MCF grant (did we mention that before?) my hoist has been re-vamped and this has enabled more riders to mount me. I am so pleased. Obviously my little friend Babs still has plenty of work, but she’s not as smart as I am; I’m much more like a real horse than she is. The maintenance team is crying out for another member to help with field grass cutting on a regular basis. You don’t have to use a scythe, we have moved on, but we still need manpower to keep things healthy for the live herd. Lent will be in full swing when you read this, do you give up, or give, to prepare for Easter? Last year one group of helpers did their fund raising around an Easter Egg raffle. Look at the size of the big prize, won by one of our families! We shall be shut during the school holidays so here’s wishing you a happy break and safe journeys, roll on the summer! Hadleigh Bowling Club

The club’s been going since 1754 which is quite an achievement and bowls has a long history. Vases 4000 years ago carry pictures of bowling, and stone bowls with a weighted bias have been found from 5000BC. Bocce was played in Rome in Caesar’s time and his invading legions may have carried it here. It was certainly well established in England by 1300 and so popular in France and England that it was prohibited because it took people away from practising archery which was a key part of the countries’ defences (and the way we’re going probably will be). Edward III restricted it to noblemen and Henry III had greens at Whitehall and only permitted common people (that’s us I think) to play on Christmas Day. Bowling was carried on through Anne Boleyn (beheaded, not a good outcome really) to Queen Victoria, Edward VIII and George VI. Pepys, Shakespeare and Walt Disney played, and famously Francis Drake insisted on finishing his game before sailing off to beat the Spanish Armada (approve of your priorities there, Francis). Le Notre, who designed Versailles, included a bowling green at Chateau Vieux he called ‘un boulingren’ but not his fault – he was French. In Hadleigh the club played in grounds behind the White Lion until we moved to the new clubhouse and green in Stone Street in 2010. Meanwhile our short mat teams are currently third and seventh in the Ipswich & District League and we all survived the dinner dance on Valentine’s night without too many major scandals to play another day. Brrrr......... it was cold outside! But at the February meeting of Hadleigh Flower Club we enjoyed a very warm and entertaining meeting starring our very own Julia and Sallie. These Chelsea Gold medal winners regaled us all with tales of their adventures with flowers. Both had worked for big London Florists Constance Spry and Jane Packer. Their work included arranging the flowers at Buckingham Palace and The Royal Opera House. Next month at the United Reform Church on March 13th, we have Timothy Green demonstrating and his title is “Wedding Bells”. A warm welcomes all. The meeting starts at 7:30pm.

Coffee Morning at Burstall Village Hall on Saturday March 17th from 10 am - 12 .30 To raise funds for Fresh Start New Beginnings

SPRING

Delicous home made cakes and fresh tea and coffee , served on beautiful vintage china. Do come along and join us and find out more about this vital Suffolk Charity. Fresh Start – new beginnings is a charity working across Suffolk and Norfolk, set up to help child victims of sexual abuse - and their families - recover from the associated trauma. We provide 1:1 therapy to the child victims as well as groups for children and their Carers. Fresh Start – new beginnings use a clinically evaluated treatment model which is proven to help children recover from the guilt, blame and shame many feel following sexual abuse. The children are offered a safe place to unravel their thoughts and fears with a worker who will not judge or be shocked by what they hear. The children are helped to process their abuse and teach them strategies to deal with the effects of the abuse. The Charity’s vision is ‘to ensure all children and young people who are the victims of sexual abuse have the opportunity to access help, advice guidance and therapeutic intervention to aid their recovery’. In Suffolk Fresh Start – new beginnings get some statutory funding (Health and Police) but this only covers half of the costs…. The Charity has so far received over 980 referrals and our service is free at the point of delivery. www.fsnb.org.uk

Our February meeting was a bit unusual and very busy as we had to squeeze in an extra speaker. Our booked speaker was Frances Moore who came to talk to us about, "Nursing In Yemen". Mrs. Moores' husband had formerly been in the army but then moved to the Foreign Office and in 1964 he was sent to work in South Yemen which at that time was a British Protectorate. It was necessary for Frances to have permission from the Emir in order to accompany her husband to his post in Ngub, an isolated place, 200 miles from Aden, very close to the border with North Yemen and inhabited by the Baihani people who were nomadic. The Emir granted this permission partly because Frances was a nurse and there was no Doctor in the area. As he was going to be at the airport with her husband to meet her, she asked what should she wear. Her husband told her to ,"wear her Ascot Kit". Poor Frances arrived off the plane, accompanied by her 3 year old daughter and 1 year old son, wearing hat and beautiful dress to find herself sinking into the sand in her high heels. The effect on the Emir, however, must have been a good one, because presuming that she was going to be their doctor, he gave her a landrover as she would need her own transport. When she arrived in Ngub, their house had no electricity and no running water. (The water boy drew water from the well and filled up the tank in the house.) As some of the women never left their houses, she visited them at home and this gave her unique insight into their way of life and she learned all the gossip. She also ran a Dressing station for ladies and children while a male nursing assistant ran a similar clinic for the men. When fighting broke out in North Yemen, they were so close to the border that lots of injured soldiers were sent to them for treatment. One incident that Frances has never forgotten was a 7 year old girl who was bitten on the ankle by a snake. The family put her on a camel and travelled for two days to get to her. As she was able to treat Alliyah with penicillin, she recovered very quickly from the effects of the poison. However, the Bedou doctor had also cautorised the leg with a hot iron before she was brought to Frances. This had made the skin contract so much that she could not straighten her leg. Frances kept Alliyah at home with her for 8 weeks so that she could gradually improve the skin to the point where Alliyah could walk again before sending her back to her own family. Frances did have time to tell us about some more exciting incidents, such as, when arabs living nearby, horrified that she had no guard, gave her 3 rifles and gave her shooting lessons. On her last working day there, two warring factions, in a feud over water, had slashed one another with their knives. There was such a commotion that her husband had to come in with his pistol drawn and do some threatening. On that day she used a total of 75 stitches to patch people up and her assistant, a similar number. She and her husband have remained good friends with the ruling family and over a number of years they have visited each other in different countries where they have lived, including Suffolk. Frances was a very interesting lady and we hope to have her back next year to speak to us again. Pat Rocks gave the vote of thanks. We then had the excitement of a talk from a second visitor. Tom Hobden is a dancer who has his own company but in this instance he is working with Dance East who have challenged him to bring together the whole town by working with different groups within the town and making a dance with each group that will reflect something about them and ultimately will reflect something of the character of the town as a whole. This dance spectacular will be captured on film. We are very excited about this venture and we are looking forward to a visit from Tom again next month. As usual, if anyone would like to join us, we meet in the Seminar Room above the library every 3rd Tuesday of the month. Rae Stapleton

Making the Glove Compartment the Phone Compartment It’s nearly a year since the Government introduced tougher penalties for motorists using their mobile phone behind the wheel – but has the deterrent had any impact? More than 400 drivers were fined or prosecuted for the offence in Suffolk between April and October last year, with the county’s police admitting the figure is a “drop in the ocean” compared to the likely thousands of incidents gone unseen by officers. In March, the Government doubled the penalty from three points to six and increased the fine to £200. Statistics prove that drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a crash while using their phone. Police say using a mobile behind the wheel is one of the ‘fatal four’ traffic offences, along with drink/drug-driving, speeding, and failing to wear a seatbelt. However, judging from the volume of offending in Suffolk, there is still confusion in some quarters as to what the rules stipulate. What does the law say? It is only legal to use a phone behind the wheel if you are safely parked with the engine off – this does not include waiting in traffic or at traffic lights. If your engine is running, your phone should be nowhere near your hands. In the words of The Department for Transport’s ‘Think’ campaign; ‘make the glove compartment the phone compartment’. You are allowed to use a phone if it is entirely hands-free – however, any hands-free devices should be fully set up before you drive, so you can take calls without handling the device. The rules also prohibit the use of hand-held telephones by passengers who are supervising a provisional driver. Using other powers, the police can still prosecute if you’re not in proper control of a vehicle. This could include holding your phone, or plugging it into a charger, for instance. What about using a phone as a sat-nav? It is illegal to hold a mobile to follow a map – if you wish to use smartphone navigation or mapping app, fix the phone to the windscreen or dashboard (making sure that it does not obscure your view), so you can see it without needing to hold it. The law includes an exception for genuine emergencies: you are allowed to make 999 or 112 calls on a hand-held device while driving but only if it’s not otherwise safe to stop. Remember, using a hand held mobile phone while driving carries six penalty points and if you are a new driver, that is enough to put you off the road. How can Gotelee’s criminal law lawyers help you? If you are under investigation or have been charged with an offence, we can assess your situation and advise you on the best way forward. Our lawyers, based in Hadleigh, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Melton, will explain your options in a clear and understandable way. Autism: Many of us frequently hear the word ‘Autism’ but how much do we know and understand it. A recent talk by expert, Annie Clements, went a long way to unravel the mysteries of this complex condition. Annie, who has three autistic children, quickly discovered the help for families and children with autism was extremely limited and patchy. Her holistic support service provides practical support, information and training on and around Autism, ADHD and some Mental Health issues. Fidelis members were totally engrossed in her interesting talk Annie Clements, CEO, Autism and visual explanation of the autistic & HDHD Support Service spectrum. They were also most surprised to hear that the pattern of behaviour was first given a name as far back as 1944. Annie was happy to field questions and chat to ladies afterwards. www.autismandadhd.org/ Health Walks Weather permitting members supported and much enjoyed the weekly Friday afternoon health walks from the Hadleigh and Boxford Health Centre with their walk’s leader Nick Schofield.

Suffolk Bereavement Supports Celebrates Recognition by Co-operative Members Local charity Suffolk Bereavement Support is celebrating its recent success in the East of England Co-operative Community Token Scheme. As you probably know, when making purchases Cooperative shoppers are invited to vote from a choice of three local charities over a period of three months. Suffolk Bereavement Support was very excited to learn at the beginning of February that they had been awarded £500 having topped the votes in a recent round of the scheme. Patrick and Margaret Palmer, founders of the charity, would like to express thanks to the Co-op for choosing them to participate in the scheme and to members for their vote of confidence. ‘It means a lot to us to know that Coop members value the service we are offering’ said Patrick and Margaret. ‘We continue to offer groups in Hadleigh and Capel St Mary and anyone who is finding the bereavement process difficult, whether recently bereaved or finding it difficult to adjust over a longer period, is welcome to join us. Our groups help the bereaved understand the emotions they are experiencing. Our members tell us that they value the opportunity to be able to meet with others going through the same process and find it a supportive way to begin to adapt to the reality of life without a loved one.’ For further information please contact Margaret or Patrick: 01206 299832; sbsg246@gmail.com; www.suffolkbereavement.org.uk. Groups meet in Hadleigh (afternoon) and Capel St Mary (early evening) and are free to Suffolk residents.

Who can see my health record? There are often situations where it would help medical staff outside our GP surgery to help us if they had access to our health records. These staff could be in hospitals and A&E departments or they could be out of hours doctors or from the ambulance service. But you have to give permission for these people to view your records and it is very easy to do this. You can pick up a form headed Who can see my health record? from reception at the Hadleigh or Boxford surgeries, or you can go onto the Practice website and click on Summary Care Record and Record Sharing and download the same form. Since November, over 400 patients have consented to share their information and the PPG hopes that many more will join them over the coming weeks. All it takes is two ticks and a signature on the form and you will be helping medical staff who may be treating you in an emergency. Why not join the Virtual PPG? We appreciate that everyone leads full busy lives and may not have time to attend PPG meetings. With this in mind , we have created a virtual discussion group to encourage wider patient participation and representation. This means we can keep in touch via an on-line discussion board. If you are a patient at Hadleigh or Boxford, if you are passionate and committed to improving quality care and would like to have your say, we would like to hear from you. To join the Virtual PPG, email us at hadleighboxfordPPG@gmail.com. For any further information about the PPG please contact Lindsay Panton, PPG Chair, hadleighboxfordPPG@gmail.com or Tracey Squirrell, Practice Manager tracey.squirrell@nhs.net 01473 8201217

Above the Parapet County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser New Hadleigh to A12 Link Road As I promised to do in my election manifesto leaflet, I have been campaigning at Endeavour House for a new Hadleigh to A12 link road in order to relieve pressure on our current inadequate infrastructure and support future growth of the town. I have asked the Council Leader if we can have one, and have staffed a proposal to him in support of my request. But it’s not going to be straightforward since it will of course require funding, which would have to be secured mostly from HMG. However, the Government will only fund infrastructure projects where they are commensurate with new housing developments. There is also a “bigger picture” to consider when requesting this new road, which we desperately need. SCC is working to deliver a Suffolk Framework for Inclusive Growth in the county to drive forward economic growth (jobs), infrastructure investment (roads, rail & broadband) and residential growth (housing). This also means providing coastal protection and flood defences; and ensuring consistent, clean, and efficient power and water supplies. Suffolk’s neighbours (Essex, Cambridge and Norfolk) have plans for significant growth over the next two decades, much of this growth located along our shared borders. SCC has identified that investment will focus on strengthening the key transport corridors into and across Suffolk (including A14, A12, A140 and the A11 and river crossings in Ipswich and Lowestoft), our rail routes (GEML and East West rail connectivity), and our utility needs (additional electricity substations, water and sewer improvements, gas reinforcements and digital communications to all areas). This will allow Ipswich (a potential city) to strengthen its role as an anchor in the Ipswich – Norwich – Cambridge triangle and will strengthen our connectivity to London. But Hadleigh remains very much isolated, away from these blobs of investment and if it remains so, then our local economic growth could potentially stagnate or possibly decline. To overcome this, new roads will be required linking us and our industrial areas better to the rest of Suffolk and beyond. I believe we need this road, but it comes with a price which is more housing; and we won’t get one without the other. Regrettably, due to a clash with a family wedding, I will not be holding my regular monthly surgery in March in the Royal British Legion. Highways faults can be reported at: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-andtransport/ or by telephone on: 0345 606 6171. mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk. mob: 07935 512591

Stoke-by-Nayland WEA Stoke-by-Nayland WEA is holding its AGM on Thursday 12th April 2018 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm. This will be followed by a presentation entitled ‘In Pursuit of the Trivial’ by Local Author Mark Mason. Mark writes: Before becoming a writer I did jobs as varied as selling Christmas cards in Harrods, playing guitar in a blues band that toured Europe and making radio programmes for the BBC. Wherever I went, though, I found it was always the trivia that excited me most. The intriguing stuff, the little facts that slip down the back of life's sofa. So I've ended up as the sort of guy who knows that Harrods dropped their apostrophe in 1921 (Sainsbury's still haven't), that Istanbul is the only city in the world to straddle two continents and that The Archers’ theme tune was produced by a young George Martin. It's an attitude that keeps life interesting, I find, whatever you're up to at any particular point in time, whether you're living in the West End of London (as I used to), or a village in Suffolk (as I do now). All past, present and future members welcome to this FREE lecture and complimentary coffee For further details please contact Sue Whiteley on 01787 210945 or email - whiteleysa@hotmail.co.uk

Hadleigh Art Club Activities The Art Club, which meets every Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the library Seminar Room, have a full programme of events for the month of March. We start with a probable visit to sketch in the church. Probable because it does depend upon the church being unused on that day. That will be on the 6th of the month, the following week, the 13th of March, the subject is people; their distant shapes, coming towards you and going away. Their clothes, colours and textures. Now we are approaching Easter, so the meeting on the 20th considers both the religious theme and the commercial; Easter bunnies/chicks and eggs. On the 27th ; Teatime! Tea cups and cakes or jug of fruity juice and perhaps a plate of biscuits. Which brings us to the fact that we are always pleased to meet new members and a reminder that about halfway through the afternoon we stop for tea and biscuits.

Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson I wonder what it is about chocolate that makes it so irresistible. As I write this, I am mindful that we are fast approaching Fairtrade fortnight (26th February – 11th March) and I would urge you to make these truffles using chocolate with the Fairtrade symbol on. That way, you can enjoy delicious treats, or make them for someone special instead of an Easter Egg, knowing the workers who provided the source for the main ingredient are getting a fair wage for their labour. I might even make some for my mum who will be 92 on the first day of Spring! Easy Chocolate Truffles Ingredients: 200 g dark chocolate, preferably FairTrade, broken into pieces. 85ml double cream, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or ½ split vanilla pod) Cocoa and/or grated white chocolate for dusting. Method 1. Put the chocolate, cream and vanilla in a pan and heat very gently until melted. Cool, then chill for 90 mins until firm. 2. Use a melon baller or teaspoon to make 24 truffles, then dust with cocoa or grated white chocolate. Chill until ready to eat. You can make these 4 days ahead and they will freeze for 1 month. Thaw in a cool place and dust with more cocoa if needed.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Our last meeting Monday 12th February 2018: Our meeting for February was a trip to the Place For Plants in East Bergholt. On a day blessed with glorious sunshine we were guided on a private tour around the tranquil 20 acre garden by the charming Sara Eley who is the great grandaughter of the gardens' founder Charles Eley. At this time of year the main areas of interest are the masses of snowdrops that carpet the ground beneath the trees. Sara was very interesting, diving hither and thither, picking samples of rhe numerous and different snowdrops for us to examine closely. I lost count of the various colour combinations, some have green splodges, some gold spots, some single and some some double. Less abundant were some very similar looking spring snowflake, a slightly bigger and taller flower. Also among the trees many hellebores have recently been planted, each one with its own idividual number for ease of identification. The picked flowers did not go to waste as they were used for table decorations in the cafe. Our next get together on Monday 12th March 2018: Our next meeting is on Monday March 12th in the dining room of the town hall (opposite The Ram). This is a very important meeting as it is the AGM. With Andy Leeder, the present chairman, moving out of the area and only four people left on the committee we desperately need some new blood to help keep the club going. It would be a shame if the club had to fold, this being our 50th anniversary year. The meeting will start at 7.30pm and will be followed by refreshments. We look forward to seeing you there.

East Anglian Garden Group This year we celebrate fifty wonderful years of the EAGG. We continue to have an exciting program of speakers and visits for our members to enjoy for 2018. In February we had a most informative talk from Julian Ives, from Dragonfli, on the use of natural pest control. As so many chemicals are now limited for garden use, it is more important to learn about the use of natural predators for our garden pests. We should make sure that we plant pollen bearing plants, including wild flowers, to encourage beneficial insects, which will predate upon aphids. He explained the use of Moth pheremone traps, the best places to put them, and showed some very graphic film of nematodes devouring vine weevil grubs! We learnt a huge amount about the use of Nematodes, and Parasitic Wasps, for pest control in the greenhouse. A fascinating talk, and there is much more detailed information on his Dragonfli website. We are looking forward to Cleve West on the 17th February, now sold out, and our visit to the snowdrops at Chippenham Park Gardens at the end of the month. Our new venue is Chamberlin Hall, in Bildeston, and all future meetings will be held there. On March 3rd, we will be welcoming Steve Edney, from the Salutation Garden, with his talk The Delights of Dahlias, and on April 7th, Harriet Rycroft will be giving us her talk on ‘Summer Splendour, Planting Exciting Container Displays’. Membership is open, and prospective members can find out more by looking at our website, and by contacting our secretary, Matt Long on 01449 741551. Eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Down to Earth ...with Dave February is a very quiet time in the garden and on the allotment, with not much to do other than a bit of tidying up and perhaps some compost spreading. Now is a good time to put a generous layer of mulch on the flower beds etc. This will keep the moisture in and keep the weeds down, be careful not to swamp any small plants, hellebores and emerging bulbs. Something I have thought for many years is backed up by a survey carried out last year in conjunction with the Natural History Museum. This led to the discovery that soils fed with organic materials such as farmyard manure and home made compost contained 50% more earthworms than soils where no organic matter had been added. Where artificial fertilisers had been used instead of organic matter there was no increase in earthworm numbers, earthworms are vital in improving the soil structure. As well as homemade compost and well rotted farmyard manure, spent mushroom compost and composted bark are great soil improvers. It does not have to be dug in, placed on top of the soil the worms will do all the work and soon integrate it. Just as soon as the soil dries out a bit the onion sets in their small idividual pots will be planted out on the allotment. The space in the greenhouse is needed for the sweet peas. This year for a change we are going to try growing them from seed, we have in the past bought rather overcrowded pots full of small plants. The seed order has arrived from Kings seeds and I am keen to get them started, the same method as used for the first early garden peas will be used. Two seeds in a small but deep plastic pot filled with special seed sowing compost and a little bottom heat just to get them started. By using seed we have more choice of colour, we shall see if it works. The three rows of daffodils planted on the allotment just for picking have developed a few blank spaces, not surprising after the years that they have been there. The answer is to mark the gaps during the flowering season with bamboo canes and then late in the year fill in the spaces with some new bulbs, there is nothing worse than sticking a trowel into a planted bulb. The fresh bulbs will be planted quite deeply, at least three times the size of the bulb. No doubt a sack of mixed daffs will be on offer at a garden centre somewhere. Finally I must compliment the Hadleigh litter picking team. Since they have been operating there has been a noticeable decrease in the amount of litter everywhere. Thank you and good luck to them all. That's all for this time, Dave

Hadleigh Healing Society The first signs of Spring have poked their heads out of the cold soil to cheer us, the snowdrops and aconites. The promise is there for others to follow. Nature has a wonderful way of getting on with its job despite what we or the weather do to interrupt that cycle. It should remind us of the timeless quality and resilience of what the countryside around us gives us. There are times we abuse it and fail to nurture that precious gift that Nature has bestowed on us for the well being of future generations. Humans need that nurturing whether it be physically or emotionally. As a Healing Society our healers are to help those who need that time or space to talk to someone in confidence, all it takes is a phone call. Telephone: 01473 823282 or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org for an appointment. We are having a Clairvoyant Day on Saturday, 28th April 10am - 4pm. There will be two mediums who can give a 20 minute private reading for £15. If you would like an appointment please book early to avoid disappointment.

District Councillor Report Cllr Dr Siân Dawson I should like to congratulate The Gables for a fabulous fundraising event for a worthy cause in St Mary Church. It was a most enjoyable and well organised evening and certainly an impressive venue. I was invited as the guest of Arthur Charvonia CEO of BDC, which enabled me to collar him about Angel Court!!! Don’t hold your breath, even he was advised it is confidential at this stage and not sure why. He has given me an assurance and I have requested under the Freedom of Information, which I was advised will not be necessary for clarification about the reasons for the delay. I want this development to commence shortly and will request another Officer takes control of project. I will take a pro-active involvement to ensure a good delivery as with the Brett Works Development due to be put on the market November, 2018. Babergh Public Access Point in Hadleigh - On Tuesday 20th February at Full Council a motion will be proposed to Babergh District Council's that Hadleigh Town should have a public access point for residents. I strongly support this motion. When the Babergh leadership made the decision to move our council offices, we were advised an access point would be provided in Sudbury, Hadleigh and Stowmarket. To date that has not transpired. I believe it is essential to have Public Access point that is accessible for the local and surrounding community. Endeavour Hse at Ipswich is not open to the public and travel to Sudbury is expensive and extremely time consuming and particularly for those living in Shotley Peninsula!! Boundary Commission - The Boundary Commission for restructuring the current Babergh Ward pattern was due to produce its final recommendations on 6th February 18, however, this has now been delayed to 20th February 18. I have been advised that it’s possible that the Boundary Commission will produce another set of recommendations for further consultation on that date. Irrespective, the Boundary Commission’s final recommendations will have to be agreed by the Secretary of State this year, if they are to be implemented at the next local elections in May 2019... Hadleigh will have a reduced number of District Councillors from 4 to 3 and across the District from 43 to 32. Private Sector Housing - The private sector housing challenge for Babergh DC has been seriously complicated by the absence of a 5 year land supply. In reality is means that developers have the opportunity to submit proposals that would not be acceptable had there been a 5 year land supply. In addition, we were informed in a Members briefing on 9th February, that Babergh’s target for completions (currently 355 per annum) is likely increase to about 440 per annum under new government planning criteria. Personally, I would far rather the government legislate to make developers start building (e.g. graduated Council Tax implementation) rather than allow them to sit on approved developments for commercial benefits that are driven by the market. This is a major issue for Babergh & other Councils. Babergh continues to buy suitable properties on the open market to increase the supply of Council owned houses. Merger of Babergh & MSDCs - The telephone poll on the referendum was due to be completed on 5th February 18. As I have reported previously, my concern centred around the questions that were asked of voters, which from my perspective, failed to provide an objective and balanced picture and led people towards approval of a merger without a full understanding of the issues. The absence of a full business case to support the merger is a prime example

of this. The Chief Executive and his staff are now completing the business plan that will be shared with the Babergh electorate before the merger referendum takes place. This is now expected to be in the early summer 2018, possibly in June. If the vote is in favour of merger, the decision must be agreed by a majority of Babergh Councillors and Mid Suffolk before it can be submitted to the Secretary of State as a recommendation. Only he can take the final decision and I would not now expect this to happen before 2020/21. Disposal of Corks Lane Buildings - There is no appetite/interest for an office or hotel commercial solution for the Corks Lane site. This leaves the single option of a housing development. Assuming that it happens, the listed buildings will be retained. If the current outline plan is approved (lot of water to go under the bridge before that happens) we are likely to have 50+ flats/houses built there. As part of that process, the Council will have to decide if it is prepared to take the risk and develop the site itself with the expectation of profit, or whether it should just be sold off. The key is to ensure that whatever solution is finally approved, it is viable in terms of a suitable return for Babergh DC That is our responsibility to Babergh residents. French’s Care Haven & Care Farm Urgent Appeal for Land to Rent Our Charity is in need of extra land with a barn and some outbuildings. If you or anyone you know has down sized on their farm or has a parcel of land they would like to see put to good use by a registered charity and care farm, then please get in touch with me. I would be very grateful if those in the know could pass this appeal around. In April we have Hadleigh Young Farmers coming along for a visit, they will be given a talk by me about the farm and what we do to help animals and the people that come to us, the young farmers will also get the chance to meet our animals. French’s had a sad parting in February, one of our old residents Indi was put to sleep, she was one of life’s fighters and had been bright with a good appetite up until the sad day. Indi’s down days health wise were becoming more frequent and this did worsen weight wise in the last few weeks of her life. Indi came to us with a vice that a lot of race horses have, a vice which is brought on through stress and can be triggered by being shut in a stable for hours on end with no natural turnout to grass. Indi wind sucked-crib biting as they call it, this is when a horse grasps a solid object such as wood with its teeth then arches its neck muscles and contracts the lower neck muscles to retract the larynx. This coincides with an in-rush of air into the oesophagus producing the characteristic cribbing grunt. This is a compulsive behaviour and is a coping mechanism to stress. It becomes a habit that sadly cannot be broken once a horse has this and because of the constant drawing of air it can become gassy in the stomach. When this occurs on a daily basis it can turn into bouts of colic, or can leave them very uncomfortable until they pass all the wind that has accumulated, these problems can become a regular occurrence. The vets do say that over years this does cause internal damage and for Indi this had become the case, it had become impossible for her to absorb any goodness from her feed and keep weight on, even though she was given adlib hay and short feeds throughout the day. Feeding adlib so the stomach has regular food in is the key to keeping real bouts of colic away and is actually the best way to help this type of horse. Many of our horses and ponies are old and have various health problems, one has an allergy/breathing problem which is kept under control with medication and the medication does need to be adjusted when the pollen is high. Another has few teeth so he has buckets of specialist feed given to him hourly to keep his weight on, we have another who has tumours, she is a grey horse and this is a weakness that can come, particularly with greys. Another has laminitis so in the summer months when sugars in the grass are high, she has to be carefully managed with her grazing and time in the paddocks, as a simple way of saying it, her feet can get very tender, so she can look doggery when she walks, but for the other 9-10 months of the year she is like a pocket rocket and gallops around everywhere like a spring chicken. Just like people when animals get older they have similar problems i.e digestive and stomach, teeth missing, breathing problems and arthritis. We all manage to still have a quality of life and carry on and with good care and management from us at French’s and other charities that work with rescued animals, these animals can still enjoy their life and be happy in themselves the same as we can, even though we have health struggles and issues. It should be understood by the general public that when you have a horse and animal rescue centre most of the horses - animals come to you because they have problems, either health wise or behavioural wise, as this is generally the reason why no one wants them. Each animal at a charity like ours has its own medication routine and management system put in place and if the animal has an ongoing condition it will and inevitably does deteriorate over time, exactly the same as it does with us humans. With the animals at French’s that have these ongoing health problems, veterinary advice and constant monitoring and care is given throughout the rest of their lives with us. Rest in peace to both Jack and Indi pictured, they were both beautiful loving individuals and much loved by all of us. Kersey Mill Newsletter This month our works to the Hurst frame have continued. The Hurst frame being the supporting central structure which support the heavy massive mill stones. The Hurst Frame required total repair, the massive heavy timber frame requiring total renovation. We are starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel with repairs now only required to the last remaining 2 legs and 2 cross members. Progress is going well & we have now successfully completed repairing an end leg along with a further cross member with a scarf joint. Our enthusiastic Millwright Bill Griffiths was heard to comment that he had lost count of the number of Scarf joints that he had made since the restoration program of Kersey Mill started. A Scarf Joint is a method of joining two pieces of wood or metal together. Most of the joints used at Kersey Mill have been nibbed scarf joints, that is to say it has two flat planes meeting on an angle and terminating with a vertical edge allowing the two surfaces to lock. Adhesive is applied, and fixing bolts offer further support. This has enabled us to retain much of the original fabric. So many timbers have had damage to one end or another, by scarfing we have been able to retain as much of the original structure as possible We have also used another form of scarf that being a Keyed Nibbed Scarf, like the previously mention but the keyed nibbed is interlocking. Plans are to have the top started prior to the next major open day on April 22nd. April 22 10am – 4pm. Drive it Day when a lot of classic and vintage vehicles descend on Kersey Mill. A wonderful opportunity for classic and vintage vehicle owners to commence the season and come to Kersey Mill where you can admire and discuss with other owners the delights of yesterday’s vehicles. All public will be welcomed, so come and enjoy a lovely day out, admire the beautiful vehicles, tour the Mill, sample some delicious refreshments on offer. Entry for display vehicles is free. A very small entry fee for visitor parking. Visitors to Kersey Mill will have noticed the bright red phone box located near the Brick Barn and the Flower shop. This is housing a defibrillator that is available for public access.

POLICE A written report had been provided for Councillors. In the report it advised that the higher crime figures for the North of Hadleigh could be due to the fact that the industrial estate and main supermarket are in this area. Councillor Grandon answered questions on pre-application advice; decriminalisation of parking; the future of the Corks Lane Site and the referendum. Both District Councillors confirmed that the information provided by Councillor Dawson advising that Angel Court would become 34 flats was incorrect as nothing has been finalised. Questions were also raised from Councillor Dawson’s report on the Boundary Commission review and the reduction in District Councillors from 4 to 3 with each ward being covered by one specific Councillor not having the three Councillors covering all Hadleigh. Councillor Fraser answered questions on the new heritage centre in Ipswich and would there be adequate parking for this new facility. He advised that planning consent had been granted to the operators of Hadleigh Quarry but he would be working with Suffolk Highways regarding safety at the road junction which he hoped would be taken on board.

MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor took the opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year. Since taking office I have attended nearly 50 engagements. Over half of these have been events in the town including the May Show, opening new businesses and attending one resident’s 100th birthday party. I went to France with the Twinning Association and spent Christmas Day as a volunteer of the Christmas Present Trust. In December Councillor Shearly-Sanders advised me in a letter that he had made a Code of Conduct complaint against me. The Monitoring Officer was contacted to find out if the role of Mayor was affected and how many complaints were held against Councillors. I was advised that the Deputy Mayor had also made a complaint against the Mayor but the Role of Mayor was unaffected. I am also in receipt of complaints held by the Monitoring Officer. The Clerk reported information received on the Spring Clean Suffolk 2018 which was passed to Councillor Young as the organiser of the Tidy Town Volunteers. The Mayor thanked the volunteers for the work they carry out around the town. STANDING ORDER NO. 40 Councillor Young asked the Town Clerk to confirm that there has been consultation with the insurers over the cemetery extension and have they confirmed that they will provide full public liability cover for the revised cemetery extension? The Town Clerk answered Yes Councillor Wilson stated that the Town Clerk has given various reasons for dissolving the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group, the latest being that information was received from a confidential source indicating this Council may be drawn into disrepute. If we accept the source is confidential, why has the information received not been divulged to the Councillors. The inference is that one or more of the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group are implicated in bringing the Council into disrepute but no action has been taken against them. Have any Councillors been privy to the information received by the Clerk. The Town Clerk answered No Councillor Shearly Sanders presented the following information: BUDGET REPORT 2017/2018 Capital Fund Paragraph 6.3 states – “As has been recognised in previous years’ budget approaches, it is important to build the Fund so that there are reserves to deal with any significant unexpected maintenance demands on the Town Hall/Guildhall Complex” “Capital Costs can be expected in the next few years at Layham Road Sports Ground” Town Council has approved and is working on a project to renew changing rooms at Layham Road which the Town Council owns. By March 2017 the Fund balance should have been £143,000 • The TH/GC Complex is not owned by Town Council - it is owned by the Guildhall Charity and there does not appear to be any Council obligation to repair it or make grant available for repairs; and • The Town Council as trustee of the Guildhall Trust is under an obligation establish and maintain an Extraordinary Repair Fund to provide for extraordinary repair and the like, Paragraph 24 (Extraordinary Repair Fund) of its Trust Document Then asked: 1 the TH/GC (not being a Council owned property) be excluded as a potential beneficiary from this Council Fund in the Budget and rely on its own Extraordinary Repair Fund after that , and only if appropriate, apply for grant like everybody else in Hadleigh?; and 2 the present balance of the fund be “earmarked” for the Council’s Layham Road sports project which is under way now? It was felt that this question needed to be discussed and would be on the next Town Council Agenda Councillor Wilson asked if the Town Clerk would research the cost of a mobile Loop System and microphones/speakers for meetings. The Town Clerk advised that this instruction had already been agreed by Town Council and a Company were visiting the building next week. Councillor Shearly Sanders asked who authorised the recent Section 73 planning application for the cemetery extension. The Town Clerk advised that the authority had been given to her by full Council to complete this project. Councillor Shearly-Sanders asked how many members of the public have expressed an interest in helping with the Neighbourhood Plan? The Town Clerk was unable to answer this question as prior notice had not been given. Councillor Cook felt that these questions raised were extremely lengthy, complicated and difficult to take in during a meeting. She requested that Councillors questions be submitted in writing prior to the meeting in order that answers could be provided. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £15,978.70 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. Voting was 12 for and 1 abstention. PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 11th January 2018 were noted. FINANCE & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 11th January 2017 was received and accepted including the recommendation to provide a grant of £250 to the Wool Towns to help with funding. Councillor Angland thanked the Town Clerk for her work on budgeting for the next financial year and was sure residents would be pleased that there would be no increase in Hadleigh Town Council’s precept. SPORTS & OPEN SPACES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 4th January 2018 was received and accepted. BUDGET 2018/19 a) Members considered the Budget Report of the Finance & Personnel Committee and its recommendations.

b) Members were required to determine a recommended Precept for the year 2018/2019 of £315,499 This was proposed and duly seconded. Voting was unanimously in favour of the Precept noting this was a 0% increase for Hadleigh residents and the Band D equivalent for the year 2018/2019 would be £110.81 based on a Tax base figure of £2847.21. Voting was 8 for and 5 abstentions Councillor Shearly-Sanders expressed his disappointment that the document had not been received prior to the meeting. The Town Clerk advised that this would normally have been completed in December but due to the high level of e.mails and correspondence being received from Councillors this had delayed completion. Councillor Whiting reiterated Councillor Angland’s previous comments and thanked the Town Clerk for an extremely good job and felt that the zero rates was very pleasing as Hadleigh Town Council are one of the only authorities to achieve this. REPRESENTATIVES Councillor Monks reported a letter sent to her from FIND (Families in Need) thanking Hadleigh Town Council for the food donated to the Christmas Tree Appeal. Councillor Monks thanked the Town Council staff for their assistance in co-ordinating the collection. Over 1,000 households had received Christmas boxes. HADLEIGH TOWN FORUM Councillor Young reporting that there had been no meeting this year but it was hoped to hold one next week. She invited the Tourism Working Group, the Mayor and any other Councillors to join them if they would be interested in organising future events. MOTION FROM COUNCILLOR WILSON Councillor Wilson put forward the motion “That all Hadleigh Town Council meetings with effect from February 2018 be held in a location accessible to people with mobility problems”. Councillor Wilson agreed to change the motion to “March 2018” to give time for alternative venues to be investigated. Voting was 11 for and 2 abstentions. The Clerk was asked to investigate alternative venues and report back to the next meeting. The Town Clerk quoted from the Arnold Baker book “If the Council owns a suitable room in the locality which it can use free of charge meetings must be held there, if not, then at all reasonable times and after reasonable notice, the Council may use, free of charge, a room in any school maintained by the local education authority or any room maintainable out of any rate, but a room in a dwelling house cannot be required for the purpose nor may a meeting be held so as to interfere with the hours in which a room is needed for education, justice or police”. Suffolk County Councillor Fraser was requested to find out from Suffolk County Council if they would be willing to fund a room for use by Hadleigh Town Council. TOWN MATTERS The Town Clerk reported a request to allocate Section 106 monies to the Skate Park extension. Babergh District Council currently hold £6,000 for Hadleigh. It was agreed that Hadleigh Town Council would support this request. There being no further business the meeting closed at 9.15pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) PSLCC CiLCA – Town Clerk Addendum: This is a draft report of the meeting. The Minutes will be approved at the Monthly Town Council Meeting held on the third Thursday of the following month. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST There were no declarations of interest. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 7th December 2017 was confirmed as a correct record and signed. MATTERS ARISING The Chair advised that since being asked from November 2017 Simon Baily of Babergh District Council had provided a response on the garage at the rear of the Royal Bengal which stated ‘prosecution materials have been sent to colleagues in our legal team for information to be laid with the courts’. Councillor Haylock stated that the court could only submit a fine as it had no powers to enforce removal. ANY OTHER BUSINESS The Chair reported an e.mail received from a resident regarding the application for 125 High Street raising concerns over windows not on the plan. The Clerk advised that the planning application for the cemetery had been granted and read the following comment from the decision notice: The proposed amendments to the site levels and contours are considered appropriate in this context and are an acceptable minor material alteration to those previously approved. Councillor Young asked the Clerk if the Planning Department of Babergh District Council had seen all the revised specifications. She was advised that they had been provided with all the documentation required. Councillor Cook reported on the number of hanging signs in the High Street and wondered why all the signage does not require planning applications to be submitted. Councillor Wilson asked about funding planning decisions by judicial review. The Clerk reported LCPAS advice. Councillor Shearly-Sanders was asked to seek a list of other parishes to pass to the Clerk. For the period 8th June 2017 to 7th December 2017 – planning applications submitted totalled 74 – of those 6 had taken pre-application advice. Parish Council The February meeting was held late in the month so a report could not be ready before the HCN was printed. A report will appear in the April magazine. It is a good opportunity to remind residents of a couple of things: Do you run a business from Layham? The Parish Council offers free advertising on our Parish Website (wwwlayham.org). It makes sense that Layham people should know of Layham businesses. If you are interested, contact Jane Cryer (Parish Clerk) on 07920 713940 or layhampc@gmail.com. The mounted man is Charles Baker, her grandfather, who worked for several different farmers during his time on the land, including some years with Bernard English at Netherbury Hall as a horseman. Apparently he was great friends with Tom Leach who worked on the same farm at that time. Later Charles moved to Priory Farm on Benton Street and lived in one of the tied cottages that border the road. Janet was pleased to show me a photograph of the occasion when her grandfather received his long service medal for 50 years in agriculture from the Queen Mother at the Royal Norfolk Show in the 1960s. It has been suggested that the standing figure in the horse photograph might be Jim Byford who was also a horseman at Netherbury Hall. Can anyone confirm this?

Layham Playgroup CIO The children have continued to watch the wildlife in our playgroup garden. We have made binoculars and have been recording all that we have seen. So far, we have seen: blackbirds, blue tits, great tits, sparrows and a robin. The children have been very excited as we have found some bird nests in the hedge surrounding our garden. We are planning for our Easter Fun Morning, which will be on Wednesday 4th April 10 – 12, at the village hall. The event will be £2.00 per child, open to all children up to the age of 10. Children must be accompanied by an adult. There will be crafts and activities in the village hall and an egg hunt around the village. Refreshments will also be on sale in the village hall. Please contact us on 07999 866419 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk Ladybird Toddler Group takes place every Wednesday morning during term time, 9.30 – 11.00 am, at Layham village Hall. Dear Sir, Last month Jane Haylock and I wrote an article in the Community News about the Guildhall Complex. At this February Town Council meeting a member of the public asked the question ‘What is the total of payments made by the Town (i.e. the Feoffment) for the general benefit of the inhabitants of Hadleigh since 31 May 2011 under its obligations in paragraph 20 of the Trust Document?’ The Feoffment’s Schedules can be found on the Charity Commission site. The Schedule quoted in this question related to the June 1978 schedule (this had to be produced after the Trustees at that time had sold the last of the properties and land belonging to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment) and originates from and relates to the first Charity Commission Scheme dated May 1898. In 1898 the Charity owned a considerable amount of property, the income from which was scheduled for ‘keeping up repairs on the properties and any excess to be used for education’ (at that time there was a school in what is now the Council Chamber). Whilst much of the 1978 Schedule is no longer valid and was replaced by the Nov 1988 Schedule which appointed Hadleigh Town Council to be Sole Trustee for the Hadleigh Market Feoffment some parts of the Scheme still apply. So to try and answer the question: the 1978 Scheme states in Section 23. The Trustees shall first defray out of the income of the Charity the cost of repairs and insurances and all other charges and outgoings payable in respect of the property of the Charity and all the proper costs, charges expenses of and incidental to the administration and management of the Charity. Section 25 states. Subject to the payments aforesaid the Trustees shall apply the income of the Charity as they think fit for any charitable purposes for the general benefit of the inhabitants of the Town of Hadleigh. As seen in our article in last month’s Community News, the Charity does not have any excess income and its maintenance and management is supported by the Town Council, particularly in its payment for occupying part of the building. I have spoken with two solicitors, both working in with Charities, and the Charity Commission regarding the Charitable purposes for the benefit of Hadleigh. They are ln total agreement that in both housing the Town Council, (and the Town Council’s rent/occupation fee) and in the present use of the building for the private hire of rooms by individuals, clubs, organisations, fairs and tourism the building is being used for ‘the general benefit of the inhabitants of the Town of Hadleigh’. The Town Council is required in law to use a set percentage of the Precept for Charitable purposes and you can see in the printed reports of Council Meetings how that money is used. Jan Byrne

Dear Sir, I would like to thank all the people who came to my aid and when I collapsed at the entrance to Clopton Gardens on Sunday 28th January. Also to the two policewomen who took me home, made all the necessary phone calls and then stayed with me until my family arrived. Bless you all, including the paramedics who said a hospital trip was not necessary. Than you all, Ray Seggar

Dear Sir, Babergh District Council now own two fairly large properties and associated land in Hadleigh. They have moved out of Hadleigh, out of district, in fact, and they are not coming back. As a Town Councillor, representing Hadleigh North, I am interested in what people would like to see happen to the buildings and land at Angel Street (formerly Angel Court) and Corks Lane (formerly Babergh Council offices). Inevitably, the decision will be made by people who don't live here (or work here anymore). You can contact me, cllr.wiltshire@hadleightowncouncil.co.uk with your thoughts and ideas on this subject. Angela Wiltshire, Hadleigh Town Councillor

Hadleigh Quarry and the A1071 - As has been reported in the February copy of H.C.N. the current owners have had their application for expansion of their permit at the quarry granted, subject to certain conditions, but which no doubt will be proceeding after allowing a suitable length of time for the dust to settle. A report on the consent given to the current licence holders to operate a wash plant and holding lagoons at the site will appear in the April edition of HCN. Fred Breyer

Hadleigh Steering Group The Hadleigh Steering Group is open to all members of the community. It is your opportunity to come and meet other local people and put your views forward on some of the matters affecting our town – or just come along to listen. Everyone is welcome. We were pleased to meet new residents at last month’s meeting and welcome back residents who had not attended for a while. The next meeting is: 4.15pm on Monday 5th March at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. We hope to have a presentation on the plans for the former Babergh Offices in Corks Lane. There will be opportunity to hear about the plans for the site and view the drawings. Meeting 5th February 2018 - Notes of Proposals/Actions/Decisions Main Agenda Item Unfortunately, due to unavoidable reasons, the presentation on the Corks Lane site had to be postponed – but the good news is that Corks Lane will now be the main agenda item for the March Meeting. Visit Hadleigh Website: Going well, has attracted some new sponsors. Local walks and Health walks are now being added so visitors to the area can see those as well. Promoting the Guildhall: Preparation for the Wedding, Prom and Party event on 3rd March is going very well. There will now be two fashion shows by Coes, there are over 30 stands booked to take part with lots of things to look at and try, wine tasting etc it should be a good event. There are several talks booked at the Guildhall one to take place on the 10th Feb, one in March, which will be about Suffragettes and then later in the year there is a talk about Hadleigh during the 1st World War. The Hadleigh Music Festival (6th - 8th July): Plans for the Festival are still developing with lots of ideas and suggestions being explored. Will soon be able to confirm booked events. The launch of the Festival will be at the Art Festival on the 21st April and the first main event of the Festival is confirmed as a battle of the band style competition at the Town Hall on the 5th July. Trevor Clark will be supporting this. The Porch project are hoping to be able to support the festival. Currently there is limited engagement with the schools although it’s hoped that some of the Primary schools may be able to get involved with the weekend. The Town council hold some images from the 1950’s town band that the festival are welcome to use, if anyone knows where the town drum from that band is please could they let Jan Byrne know! Parking for the festival was discussed and it was advised that BDC had confirmed that until works start, Bridge St car park remains open for public use. Tidy Town: The group is growing with new volunteers joining, there are now 17 regulars who come to the picks which means that all of the main areas in the town can be covered each month, and that there is now capacity to include some new areas as well. Boswell lane had been done recently, although it is a difficult area due the narrow road, there was a significant amount of rubbish in the hedge and on the roadside. There will be additional picks planned for the weekend of the 2nd March to coincide with the National Litter pick weekend. It was mentioned that Morrisons trolleys are appearing in the town but if you contact Morrisons they will collect. The bulbs are starting to come up from last year’s planting of the community gardens. Christmas Present Trust: This year’s event was very successful and incredibly well supported. It catered for 85 people including families. The group would like to extend a huge and sincere thanks to the Town Council, the businesses and the volunteers who all made it such an amazing event. The Porch Project: The group have settled into their new office and were very pleased to have an official opening, carried out by Clare, Countess of Euston, Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk. A new youth worker has also been appointed. Future Main agenda Items The main topic for April is still to be agreed. It is anticipated that in May, there will be a presentation by Suffolk County Council Intelligence hub on the future of Suffolk in 20 years. This is a very interesting presentation and provides lots of contextual information on what our County can expect to be like then. Main Agenda Items for the next meeting: Future of Corks Lane Hadleigh – Babergh District Council. Chairman for March meeting Kathryn Grandon, if you have any ideas for future meetings do feel free to contact me Kathryn.Grandon@Babergh.gov.uk DATE OF NEXT MEETING: 5th March 2018 @ 4:15pm Hadleigh Pool and Leisure

The Second Dramatic Retreat of the War TWO FILMS TO CONCLUDE OUR WINTER PROGRAMME Friday 9th March at 7.30 pm

VICTORIA AND ABDUL (PG) For our first presentation in March we are showing VICTORIA AND ABDUL, where Judie Dench, playing Queen Victoria, slips effortlessly into the role to welcome Abdul, an Indian who recently joined her court. This remarkable but true story concerns their relationship which develops slowly but then becomes a consternation to the rest of her court members. Friday 23rd March at 7.30 pm

GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN (PG) This film is a rare glimpse of the relationship between the children’s author, A A Milne and his son, Christopher Robin and begins in 1941. Christopher is bullied at school which he blames on his father but when war breaks out the Christopher Robin stories start to emerge following the walks they had together.

In this article we remember: Sydney Harry Ling 27 March 1918 At the outbreak of war in August 1914 the relatively small British Expeditionary Force (BEF) was rushed to France to block the advance of the much larger German Army that was heading for Paris, via Belgium. It was clear from the very first engagement that the British were outnumbered and in danger of being wiped out. They were forced to retreat from Mons. Some units were ordered to stand and fight to the last man in order to gain time for the majority of troops to escape south. This was a particularly arduous time for the British, but eventually the German advance ran out of stream and came to a stop. There then followed a series of engagements with each side trying to outflank the other. This phase of the war became known as the ‘race to the sea’ and led to the formation of the Western Front. In October 1914 the British Army relocated their main effort around the Belgium city of Ypres where they fought the first battle of Ypres, which ended on 22 November 1914 with the establishment of the Ypres Salient. It was during this early phase of the war that the Kaiser is alleged to have referred to the British Army as “that contemptible little army”, a term later adopted by British veterans who proudly nicknamed themselves ‘The Old Contemptibles’. In early 1918 these men were formally recognised with the award of the 1914 Star, colloquially known as the ‘Mons’ Star. It is thought that at least twenty three men from Hadleigh were awarded the ‘1914 Star’, these were:

In March 1918 it was difficult to be optimistic regarding the outcome of the war. The 1917 Russian Revolution led to the collapse of the eastern front which meant that many more German troops were now available to fight on the western front. By this time the British had taken over responsibility for one hundred and twenty five miles of the western front running from Belgium south through Northern France. This included a twenty-eight miles section recently taken over from the French in January. At the same time the British War Cabinet had put restrictions on the number of soldiers available which meant that the Army had to reorganise. Some battalions were disbanded with the men being transferred to fill other units. Hadleigh men serving with the 8th

Suffolks found themselves being sent to join the 2nd, 4th or 7th battalions. The result of this reorganisation meant that men found themselves in the front line for longer and with less rest. As March drew on, the Germans, reinforced with troops, wanted to launch a massive offensive before the American forces could be deployed. On 21 March 1918 at 04:40hrs the ‘Kaiserschlacht’, the Kaiser’s Battle began with an enormous barrage that was greater than anything seen previously in the war. On that one day an incredible three and a half million gas and high explosive shells were fired into the British lines. For the British there was no alternative but to retreat across the old hard fought for battlefields of the Somme. The 2nd Suffolks were a few miles south of Arras where the front line was pushed back about 8 miles pivoting around the town; Arras was never lost. The 7th Suffolks with no artillery support were close to the ruined town of Albert, with their backs to the wall, inadequately equipped and tasked with holding the bridge-heads and facing the rapidly approaching German advance, an advance that in a matter of a few days had pushed back the front line at its maximum for over 40 miles. The 7th Suffolks war diary states that the Albert Operations began at 10.30pm on 26 March with simultaneous attacks on their positions by road bombing and machine gun enfilading along the railway line to the west of the town. The fighting was at close quarters in the rubble strewn streets of the western half of Albert. The Battalion’s casualties were in excess of 260, many were known to be killed, but many were missing. As the war diary says: “A large proportion of the missing are unquestionably killed and left in the forward positions which we were forced to evacuate. For Battalion the operation ended on 28 March with a return to billets. Private Sydney Harry Ling serving with the 7th Suffolks was the only Hadleigh man to lose his life in this action. Sydney had been born in Whatfield in 1897, his father Frederick was a farm horseman and his mother Lottie (nee Revans) was from Hadleigh, by 1904 the family had settled in the town and in 1911 were living at Place Farm at the east end of Angel Street. At the age of 18 in July 1915 Sydney Ling enlisted with the Suffolk Regiment and on 22 December 1915 when only just 19 he was in France serving with the 8th Suffolks. In the spring of 1916 Sydney Ling was probably constructing the defensive positions around Albert, close where he was to lose his life two years later. As far as is known he continued with the 8th Suffolks, through the 1916 battle of the Somme and the 1917 battles at Arras and Passchendaele and was with the battalion when they disbanded in February 1918. At that point Sydney was transferred to the 7th Suffolks. Private Ling’s body was never found and he is remembered today on the Pozieres Memorial on the Somme battlefield and on the Hadleigh War Memorial. Dogged Start To Lizzie’s Year!

A chant of “Who Let the Dogs Out – Woof, Woof” went up as Newton Green’s new ladies’ captain sent her drive-in tee shot 133 yards down the first fairway. Lizzie Johnson has a pet Flat Coated Retriever she walks when not striding the fairways of her golf club. In a morning themed round Pets Are Us, many of her fellow members wore animal costumes, and vice-captain Cate Fraser appeared as cartoon character Deputy Dog. In very cold and bitter weather, 50 ladies showed dogged determination as they set out on a 10-hole Delaney scramble competition, which had been preceded by Lizzie witnessing retiring captain Rebecca Evans putting out on the 18th green to complete her season. Competition winners: 35 Gwyneth Ferriera, Sue Thurgate, Carol Durston and Elizabeth Underwood, 35.5 Pam Guilbert, Sally Cade, Jill Symon and Maggie Manby.

Interstellar Interloper Sun: 5th March Rise 06.34 Set 17.43, 15th March Rise 06.11 Set 18.00, 30th March Rise 06.36 Set 19.26. Moon: Full 2nd March, New 17th March. Planets: Mercury is an early evening object in Pisces, setting at 19.45 on the 15th and shinning at magnitude 0. This is a tough object to locate in twilight, though binoculars will show it easily. Venus lies very close to Mercury during this period and will shine at magnitude -3.8 making it easy to see with the naked eye. Jupiter is now rising at 23.20 and is a month from opposition. Saturn is an early morning object in Sagittarius. Oumuamua: This month I thought I'd talk about an object which was discovered back on 19th November last year. The object was initially believed to be a comet because its orbit appeared to be very large. The object didn't show any cometary activity though, no tail and no coma despite the object reaching perihelion (closest point to the Sun) back in early September at 0.2 AU's which is pretty close, and certainly close enough for ice to sublimate, nothing happened. The orbit was determined and something odd was instantly obvious; the eccentricity of the orbit was large - larger than anything seen before at a value of 1.89. Eccentricity of an orbit indicates where an object comes from and where it's going in space. Eccentricities of 0 are circular, one of 0.9 would be a long ellipse with the object taking thousands of years to traverse the Sun. If the value is 1, then the object will be on a parabolic trajectory and just held onto by the Sun, values of over 1 indicate the body is carrying too much potential energy to be captured by the Sun and thus will be kicked out of the Solar System and into interstellar space. We know of objects that have left our system, but until last October had never seen one come into ours from another system. Oumuamua is actually an asteroid that is a rather odd shape, some 235m x 35m x 35m in size and shaped like a cigar and deep red in colour. We know that it has been travelling through deep space for millions of years (possibly billions) and came from the direction of the Solar apex, a region in space near the constellation Lyra that our Sun is heading towards. Finally, its speed is vast. It has been travelling through space (and will continue to do so) at a constant velocity of 26km/s or 58,160 mph. At perihelion, it reached 87 km/s or a whopping 194,613 mph! By the end of this year it will already be at the orbital point of Saturn, some 9 AU away.

Thankyou I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped put together my surprise 50th and despite all my protesting against one - Grace, it was really special. Thanks also to everyone who was able to come and share my evening with me and for all my beautiful gifts. Sam

Hadleigh Hares Still mired in the depths of winter this is a relatively quiet time for the Hares as most of us concentrate on training and getting ready for the season to come. However, amongst the training there is still the Cross-Country season which continues to go well. Last month saw a great turn out for the Hares at the third of the races in this year’s 53-12 XC League. This is a competition that the club has competed in for many years and comprises of a series of races for both juniors and seniors organised by local clubs over courses of about one mile and five miles respectively. The latest race was held at Suffolk Food Hall and was hosted by Ipswich JAFFAs. Well done to juniors Oliver, Seb, Aaron and Molly for their first cross-country runs of the season and to Kurtis who ran another strong race, winning the junior team prize. We had a record number of seniors for this season including James McNally who finished 2nd overall and Davina Greenwell and Elisa Bostock who finished 5th and 6th in the womens’ race. Kay Oxford ran another extremely strong race and was awarded the senior prize. Overall, with eight men and four women to count towards the points total, the ladies finished a fantastic second and the men fourth making the Hares second overall. Having been promoted to Pool A last season, it is looking increasingly possible that for the first time ever we may stay in the top Pool at the end of the season. Previously we have been promoted only to be demoted the following year as the higher league requires twice as many scoring athletes than the lower one. Being a small club, we simply haven’t had the strength in depth to compete at the higher level. This year though, due to an influx of new talent we are looking good for retaining our place. Watch this space for further developments! On the subject of Cross Country, congratulations to Caitlin Fosker for being picked for Suffolk Schools at the Royal Hospital School race earlier this month ahead of representing the County again in Loughborough in March. The main road racing event this month was the ever popular Great Bentley Half Marathon on Sunday 4th February. This year we had six Hares taking part in the famously flat and fast 13.1 miler. First Hare home was Scott Ramsey in 1 hour, 20 minutes and 42 seconds, and the first female Hare was Alice Heather-Hayes in 1 hour, 26 minutes and 23 seconds. Three other Hares, Aden Bell, Oliver Riches and Simon Fenn came in closely bunched at around the 90 minute mark and Paul McAllister ran a strong race to finish 380th in a field of 647 finishers. Well done to all of them – fantastic effort all round! Elsewhere, Amanda Dunn braved the comedy mud to complete the May Hill Massacre – 9 miles of mud and sunshine in the Midlands. Sounds like a lot of fun! This month saw the first of our triathletes out competing in an early season Duathlon at the Queen Elizabeth Velopark in Stratford on 11th February. Well done to Adam Johnson for winning his age group in horribly windy conditions. And to finish, an inspirational story from one of last year’s Couch to 5k participants, Joanne Abbott. Couch to 5k is a course over several weeks to get complete beginners ready to race their first 5k event. Hadleigh Hares have offered this over the past couple of years and have been rewarded with some great new runners and some great stories like this one. In Joanne’s own words: “I started running with the Hares after looking for a local couch to 5k last April, and so enrolled on the course with Elaine. The group were so friendly and I quickly found my running feet and completed my first 10k a couple of months after the beginners course finished, at Langham 10k. I was very honoured to be given the best new beginner award at the Hares award evening at Kersey Mill. My challenge for this year is to build my running achievements and I will be completing a trio of runs: the London big half, Colchester half marathon and the Virgin London Marathon! (I was super lucky to get a ballot place on my first ever attempt). I'm not the fastest by far, and quite often I'm found right at the back of the pack, but I do have a lot of determination and really do enjoy my sessions with the Hadleigh Hares. I will be trying to raise a little for charity with my challenges. If anyone has a spare few pennies, they would be mostly gratefully received and will be divided between my chosen charities of Eve appeal, Endometriosis UK, Fight for Sight and BHF.” https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JoanneAbbott Hadleigh Hares are a friendly local athletics club catering for all levels and abilities from beginners to Ironman triathletes. It is a fun and friendly way of getting or keeping fit – just ask Joanne! If you fancy coming along and joining at whatever level please contact us at chair@hadleighhares.co.uk or via Facebook. There is a beginners/improvers session every Monday evening at 7pm meeting at Hadleigh Pool, and we run session for ladies only as well as more advanced running, and mixed ability swimming and cycling sessions throughout the week with our qualified coaches.

Hadleigh Cycling Club Plans In 2018 The Club’s 2018 programme is coming together. The Junior Club will start in April, a little later than in previous years. We are looking to put on Get Back on Your Bike sessions again for Ladies on Wednesday evenings in June. Julian Cecil has offered to run short rides for those who don’t possess lycra or a road bike and just want to try social riding. Our usual Club rides will run on Sunday mornings from the George and once the weather improves, Monday evening rides from the High School. The Gayford Flyer will take place on Sunday, 2nd September. At last year’s Gayford Flyer we supported Paul Spraggons who will be riding the Grand Depart Classic on 23rd June for Prostate Cancer UK. To date, he has had donations of nearly £9000 and has done in a fantastic job in raising awareness. Please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tourdespraggs and support the cause. There was a terrific turn out for Hadleigh CC’s annual subs night at The George with many existing members signing up and we have been joined by 10 new members - Ian Culham, Michael Fraser, Andy Allen, Lee Abbott, Martin Bundy, Tim Collins, Reg Pennell, Michael Carter, Tim Allcorn and Michael Lynch. Riders are invited to gentle social rides starting at 9am from The George on Sundays, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. Visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

Stoke by Nayland Ladies Stoke by Nayland Ladies played a 9 hole Stableford on the Gainsborough course on Thursday 15th Feb, it was a beautiful day with only two temporary greens which was due to them being very wet from Wednesday evenings down pour. The ladies had a choice of Blue or Yellow tees, with almost equal number of ladies playing off each tee. After the match the Ladies were invited to a Charity Social, Lady Captain Elaine Davidson had asked that the Ladies brought items that were non perishable, these were then taken to the Sudbury Food Bank, she was overwhelmed by the response with lots of the ladies bringing in several items. The overall winner of the days competition was Betty Cox with 21pts! Silver Division 1st Jane Golding 21pts; 2nd Anne Hemmings 19pts; 3rd. Mandy Byham 18pts. Bronze Division 1st Betty Cox 21pts; 2nd Maryan Griffiths 19pts; 3rd Maureen Adams 17pts. Copper Division 1st Caroline Lowe 15pts. Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh United gave splendid performance to win at Kirkley and Pakefield by a single goal. The scorer was Tom Driscoll with a well placed shot following a corner. Conditions were bad with wind and rain blowing directly off the North Sea which is only half a mile from the football ground. The previous week another fine display earned a draw at home to Stanway with both teams scoring twice. Man of the match for Hadleigh was goalkeeper Nick Punter who saved two penalty kicks. The strong Stanway team are one of the favourites to win the league. Driscoll and Vardon-Barber scored for Hadleigh. Another powerful outfit are Wroxham and they scored six goals against Hadleigh on what was a bad day for us. A home match against Gorleston was also lost by three goals to one. New player Danny Smy scored his first for Hadleigh with a header. The Reserves went down heavily by seven goals to two at Halstead Reserves. Both our goals were scored by Ben Baldwin. A wet spell of weather forced several youth games to be postponed despite the hard work of our groundsman Mervyn Bignell. The Veterans team beat Suffolk Police by four goals and also overcame Kedington by a narrow margin in a cup match. They play on Sundays. Latest winners in the monthly draw were Mark Ward and Barrie Stokes. Winner of the Ground Improvement Fund was David Crawford. HADLEIGH UNITED FIXTURES Hadleigh United begin their fixtures for March on Saturday 10th away at Gorleston. One Saturday 17th we go to Haverhill Borough and then Coggeshall come to the Millfield on Friday 23rd. The month ends away at Saffron Walden on Saturday 31st. The Reserves begin at home to Woodbridge on Saturday 3rd. The Long Melford come to Hadleigh on Saturday 10th. Then on Saturday 17th Saffron Walden come to our ground before we go to Haverhill Rovers on Saturday 24th. Whitton Reserves visit Millfield on Saturday 31st to end a busy month. Our youth team go to Stowmarket on Thursday 8th. Then we visit Felixstowe and Walton to end the month on Thursday 22nd.

Since my last report Hadleigh’s 2nd Team, the “Owls” have experienced a good run of winning three matches and losing one. The team still lies in 7th spot but are only 3 sets behind Britannia Buzzards with two matches in hand so moving up a position is quite feasible. Matches were won against Wherstead Meteors and Kingsfleet each by 6 games to 4 and a 7 games to 3 win against Trimley “B”. The only loss being an 8-2 defeat away to Britannia Cormorants. Both Dean Abbott and Rupert Pyett are winning vital games and Bob Southgate won an excellent game over at Trimley. Unfortunately David Rickett will be unable to play in any of the remaining matches so Rupert, Dean and Bob will finish the season off for the half a dozen matches left. In Division Two, Hadleigh “A” are now looking well clear of the chasing opposition teams and the last three games have all been easy victories. 10-0 against Britanniaq Sparrows, 8-2 against BT Thunderbirds, and a further 100 against Wherstead Novas. Young junior Daniel Young continues to be very successful aided by Mike Emmerson, Steve Holland and Rex Manning. Peter Wright has quickly got over a knee problem and is back competing for the team. Looking ahead to the Handicap Cup Competition, the “A” team will play away to Wherstead Novas in the semi-finals. They will be handicapped by having to give several points start to the opposition so the challenge will be to overcome this on Wherstead’s home table. I’ll keep you informed in my next column.
