Hadleigh Show 21st May at Holbecks Park The show is almost here and we are in the very final mapping stages of getting back after a long 2 years. Tradestands and food exhibitors are exceeding 200, entries in all classes stand at just over 600 across the showground. Record numbers of sheep entered will mean there is plenty to witness in the sheep rings and with plenty of cattle, donkeys and horses also entered, the rings will be buzzing across the showground. Showground preparation is well under way with the first grass cut being taken this week and the work will continue to iron out any lumps and bumps. The “superhighway” is tidy, clear and ready for the traffic so we are almost good to go. Across the showground we have so much to entertain starting with our lovely friends at Stocks Fair opening on Friday night from 6pm-11pm, for show visitors all day and evening on Saturday and from 12pm-5pm on Sunday. Alongside them we have our education area, a countryside ring with machinery old and new, the Sheep Show and Dog and “Not” Duck Show, moving up through the shopping and tradestands towards Rural Crafts, Horticulture and Floral Art. The Cookery Theatre has displays throughout the day, plus the Art Show, Grand Ring, Presidents Ring, Food Hall and together with livestock and equine we should have something for everyone. Tickets are in ADVANCE ONLY, please purchase online via www.hadleighshow.co.uk or via our amazing local outlets:- Keith Avis, Hadleigh; Boxford Post Office; Hollow Trees Farm Shop, Semer; Bates Wells & Braithwaite, Sudbury; Hall Farm Shop, Stratford-St-Mary; Hintlesham Barns; Elmsett Post Office & Stores; Park Street Stores, Stoke by Nayland, Somersham Community Shop and Bildeston Post Office We are so looking forward to welcoming you back to Hadleigh Show, fingers crossed for sunshine and smiles all day

Since the 6th April 2022, separating married couples have been able to divorce without one party having to allege fault. The timescales for divorcing a spouse and the ability for one spouse to obstruct a divorce have also changed. Previously, for a couple to divorce, one person was required to accept responsibility for the relationship breaking down. Or, if neither person was willing to accept responsibility, they must have been separated for a period of two years (where both individuals agree to the divorce) or five years (where one spouse does not agree to the divorce). Other than in the event of extended separation, this means one party accepting that they have committed adultery, behaved unreasonably, or have disserted the other. For many years campaigners have demanded changes to divorce law, recognising that many couples simply drift apart; that no one party is to blame for the relationship breaking down, or that both spouses mutually and amicably want to separate. Since April 2022, divorcing couples are now not required to apportion blame or wait a period of two or five years of separation to pass to be able to commence divorce proceedings. Under the changes, couples will now be able to apply for a divorce simply because their marriage has broken down, paving the way for a mutually agreed and amicable divorce process. In situations where the divorce is not amicable or mutually agreed, the new legislation will also remove the ability for one spouse to prevent the other from divorcing them and in these and other cases will provide for reducing the time it takes to formally divorce, compared to the previous legislation. If you are considering separating from your partner, have made a full and final decision on separating from your spouse, or have delayed commencing proceedings due to not previously having grounds to divorce from your spouse, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors for initial advice and guidance. Your options may have changed. Holmes & Hills has a team of specialist divorce solicitors that is independently ranked as one of the leading teams of divorce solicitors in the region. The team is noted as a ‘strong choice for advice on financial settlements’ by the Legal 500 directory of the county’s top law firms. When you contact Holmes & Hills, you can speak with an expert Family Law solicitor who will help you to understand your options and legal position when considering separating from a spouse. This specialist advice will be aimed at protecting your interests both now and in the future. When discussing your circumstances and legal position with a solicitor at Holmes & Hills, you can talk about the changes to legislation and what this means for you and your options. Call Holmes & Hills on 01787 275275 or email advice@holmeshills.co.uk. Holmes & Hills can offer initial advice via in-person appointment, video conference or telephone call. Initial advice appointments are offered a discounted fee rate

Layham church needs you!

Hadleigh Hairloom Walk In Family Salon Opening Hours: Sunday Closed Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9 am to 5.30 pm Tuesday 9 am to 7.00 pm Thursday 9 am to 8.00 pm Saturday 8.30 am to 4.00 pm

A plea has been made for extra volunteers to help preserve an historic church. Following more than two years of Covid, the churchyard at St Andrew’s Church in Layham is in desperate need of some TLC to protect the fabric of the listed building and tombs, as well as smarten it up for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, says churchwarden, Christine Hempstead. “We used to get free help from groups under the government’s Payback Volunteer, Brian Hempstead, cuts Scheme, but this has ceased since back very overgrown shrubbery in the Covid pandemic,” she the churchyard in Layham. commented. “Unfortunately, the funds we receive from the Parish Council don’t cover the cost of employing gardeners, so we have to rely on the generosity of volunteers. We therefore need people to help mow the grass, cut back overgrown shrubbery, remove ivy from the walls and tombs in addition to general tidying up and removal of debris. There has been a church on the site at Lower Layham since before the Norman Conquest in 1066, and the current structure has been part of the community since the late 13th century. The earliest recorded rector was Osbert de Layham in 1247. In addition to religious services, the church has been used for other community activities such as concerts and fund-raising St Andrew’s Church, Layham events and exhibitions and Christine is keen to encourage its further use. “Thousands of pounds need to be spent on structural repairs but, in addition, we need to maintain the churchyard to prevent further damage to walls and gravestones,” she said. Potential volunteers should contact Christine Hempstead on 01473 810171 or email her at hempstead91@hotmail.com. Mowers and strimmers can be provided and timing can be flexible. “We feel we have a duty to preserve this attractive country church for future generations, and we would be grateful for any help we can get,” said Christine.

Hadleigh Healing Society We are all experiencing challenging times, times that we have never faced before but what it is has revealed is that within each of us we have the ability to cope and help others. There have been many acts of extreme kindness to help those who have been in isolation with shopping, telephone contact and many other everyday tasks that we do without thinking about. The dedication of doctors, nurses and all NHS staff, supermarket staff, postmen/ladies, the bin men, the list goes on and on, they all deserve a big thank you. We, the healers, have not been able to have face to face contact with the people who seek our help but we have been sending out our thoughts to those who are feeling so unsettled by life. As soon as we are able too the Hadleigh Healing Society will open our doors and welcome anybody that feels the need to have that time to talk with one of our qualified, registered healers, in the strictest confidence. Meanwhile, our healing thoughts are with you to keep you safe. Take care, keep safe.

Plastic Free Hadleigh Hadleigh is one of 862 communities signed up to the Surfers Against Sewage movement, encouraging local residents, business, schools and community groups to actively tackle single use plastic. It starts with us as individuals, taking action within our own homes, workplaces or making lifestyle choices. A change to using refills, or reusing/ repurposing the plastics we already have. By working together we can fight the single use plastics crisis. Throwaway plastic is staggering - it gets everywhere roadsides, farmland, into our rivers and oceans. It affects our food chains. Small changes can really help! 12 million tonnes of waste plastic items pour into our oceans every year. It is found in the deepest parts of our oceans as far away as the Antarctic. Birds, whales and turtles are just a few examples of marine life killed after digesting or being tangled in plastic packaging or ghost fishing gear. It pollutes our oceans with toxic chemicals and pathogens and can carry invasive species to isolated and pristine marine habitats causing damage to the most vulnerable wildlife. Humans are now known to have minute plastic particles inside of us - with as yet unknown health implications! Linked also to climate change issues - creating 1 tonne of new plastic uses oil and gas, generating up to 2.5 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide! A number of Hadleigh businesses have signed up to Plastic Free Hadleigh - pledging to eliminate at least 3 plastic single use items from their everyday trading and these include: Adnams, Adore Nature, Cobblers Waffle House, Erivica Cakes, Fergusons Deli, Fork Kitchen and Deli, Love Refills, Mung Bean and Sweet Memories. Hadleigh Town Council are actively supporting Plastic Free Hadleigh as are Hadleigh Cycling Group. We need more community groups and major local business to come and join us as we strive to make Hadleigh a Plastic Free Community. If you want to be more active then you can join us for our ‘Million Mile Clean Up’ on 7 May 22 at 10am on the A1071 as we clear the verges and the layby, near Wolves Wood. Also come and see us at the Hadleigh Show on Saturday 21 May 22. If you want to find out more, then check out our website, www.hadleighheat.org

‘Sibarita’ – Spain’s Organic Larder Introduces New Products The product range of ‘Sibarita’ will soon, for the first time include fish products: preserved tuna and anchovies from Arroyabe, a leading Spanish producer for over 100 years. These are not the products generally available from supermarkets in the UK! So, what are they? There are two sub-species: White Tuna, also known as Bonito del Norte or Albacore and Yellow Tuna. They are caught in summer in the Basque Gulf of Biscay using traditional, ecological “pole, line and hook” methods not resulting in the unintentional catch of other species or damage to the seabed. Both have excellent flavours with Yellow Tuna having a slightly stronger flavour and more colour. They are prepared by hand, one by one, in the traditional way, and packed carefully, manually, in large pieces into glass jars, normally preserved in olive oil, which results in the smooth texture and flavour. The end-result is a high-quality product that looks as good as it tastes. “Sibarita” offers a lower-calory option with tuna preserved in water, an interesting alternative in salads as the customer can chose the dressing to use. Another healthy choice is low-salt white tuna. “Sibarita” is also looking forward to receiving “Ventresca” or belly tuna renowned by gourmets as the finest tuna of all – it is the only Tuna product packed in cans. Ayorrabe claim their Cantabrian Anchovies are the most appreciated and renowned anchovies worldwide for their meatiness, smooth texture and intense flavour. “Sibarita” do not dispute this claim! They are caught in Spring. The ready-to-eat anchovy fillets are cleaned manually and preserved with olive oil in glass jars. This premium anchovy (Engraulis Encrasicolus) is caught only in the Bay of Biscay and follows the traditional, artisan techniques for its preparation in accordance with the deep-rooted cultural habits of the Basque coast and country It is thought the shipment of Ayorrabe products will arrive early in May. Now you know all about Sibarita’s exciting new fish products!. Call Sibarita on 01787 323933 09.00-17.00, Monday to Friday or send an email at any time: hello@sibarita.co.uk

Providing a quality affordable Car Service across Suffolk

The Cock Inn, Hadleigh Spring is certainly in the air as we make plans to replant our garden at The Cock Inn. For those that don’t know, we now have additional outside seating in what was the old car-park area and we have ambitious plans to redesign the entire outdoor area in the autumn, all ready for next spring. First the pandemic and now the turbulence of the war in Ukraine has done much to stifle consumer confidence and thus many businesses are having to indeed delay, change and even cancel their plans for the future. It’s a bit of ‘wait and see’ at the moment. To top it all, energy prices have increased steeply along with many of the things that we frequently purchase from the supermarket. Building material costs have rocketed too and the proposed costs to develop the outside area here at the pub have near on doubled since early 2020. We are hoping that in maybe six months or so, prices may have returned to an acceptable level…but hey, don’t hold your breath! We are trying extremely hard to keep our prices both competitive and affordable. Increases from the brewers have broken many records as they try to deal with their own rising costs while at the same time attempting to recover money lost during past lockdowns. Utility costs have a significant impact on the hospitality industry as we are big users of energy. The horror stories of a pint of ale going up by 50p are everywhere. We have tried to minimize the impact because we know that our customers have increased costs too, however we are all going to have to pay more for most things going forward. Let’s hope we can all stay in business!! I reported last month that our Bar Billiards team were runners up in the Sudbury and District League as there were only a few games to go and it was practically impossible for us to finish as Champions. Well, the guys at The Cock Inn did win the league, so a big congratulations to Melvyn Tilbury and the team for winning through and against the odds. It went down to the wire with The Cock edging it by one point. (I think the opposition were looking to VAR to overturn the result) More great music planned for the end of April into May with Irish Ballard’s Band, Great Craic playing on Saturday 30th April at 9pm. If you love The Pogues, you’ll love these guys. The super duo of Words & Music are here on Sunday 8th May playing all your favourite tunes from the Beatles and more while soloist and ever popular Adam Harrod will take to the stage on Sunday 22nd May. It’s always a 3pm start for our Sunday afternoon music events. A diary date for Saturday 4th June with The Blaggers, live at 9pm, another super band not to be missed. If you saw them last time out, tell your friends. Great sport too in May with the FA Cup final on Saturday 14th, the Europa League Final on Wednesday 18th and the Champions League final on Sunday the 29th. English teams are still in with a shout so it could be very interesting. My money is on Liverpool! The Cock Inn, 89 George Street, Hadleigh Tel 01473 941049 www.thecockinnhadleigh.co.uk

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) By the time this goes to print volunteers will have returned to their posts both inside and outside the Practice to assist with the Covid booster vac clinics. The long awaited fourth jab will soon be a reality for the 75 plussers and immune suppressed cohorts. Patients in this category, with six months since their last booster, will be sent a letter giving them an appointment to attend the Practice clinic for a Moderna jab. The first vac clinic was on 23rd April with a second to follow on 7th May. If patients are unable to attend for whatever reason, they do not have to call the Health Centre and cancel. There has been no word from Government about further boosters for any other age groups. A new PPG work group has been set up to work alongside the Practice with a view to improving patients’ access to their medical services via the telephone and internet. They will take a critical and analytical look at ways of accessing and improving patient information and appointments. Once this has been simplified there will be a move to encourage patients with computers to book on line. This will help free up telephone slots for those without IT access.

The Hadleigh Archive Hadleigh’s History on your Doorstop The Suffolk Horse was much prized for its work on the mainly heavy lands of central Suffolk. Commonly known as the Suffolk Punch, this horse was renowned for its suitability for working on the land. At Corham Street Farm on the western side of the town, from 1881, a stud of these horses was developed by Messrs. Wilson on their farms with the purchase of a two year old Filly, Scott, who went onto become a wellknown mare. Soon, prizes were being won at local and County Shows, including a first at the Suffolk show, that year being held at Stowmarket. “Hadleigh Nora” and foal, shown here on this photograph was foaled in 1918. Among her prizes was taking 1st Prize at the Hadleigh Plough Fair which was held in 1926. For forty-seven successful years the stud flourished, but during the year 1928, Messrs. T. W. Wilson & Sons let their Pott’s and Coram Street Farms meaning that an auction sale of the Hadleigh Stud, comprising of 36 Suffolk Punch Horses was held at the Coram Street Farm. The auctioneer was A. Cecil Grimwade of the Market Place, Hadleigh, and A. G. Thompson, who was the Farm Manager, combined to make all the arrangements which included light refreshments, advising of suitable hotels at Ipswich, Colchester and Hadleigh for those wishing to attend the auction. The L, & N.E.R. station at Station Road, Hadleigh was recommended for those travelling from a distance, and the “White Lion Hotel” and the “Kings Head” were both endorsed for those travellers arriving by rail to Hadleigh. This important dispersal of an old established stud was held on Friday 21st September 1928, and was followed by a sale of farm implements, machines, carriages, harness and hand tools, etc. from Pott’s and Coram Street Farms early the next month. Phase 2 @Fork With Christmas a distant memory and the never-ending winter finally coming to an end with the most beautiful Easter weekend we decide that now is the time to launch phase 2 of Fork. With fork being 18 months young we have now taken the plunge into café culture to really complement what an amazing offering we already have and also to give people the chance to sample what we do at floor2 but on a scaled back version. We have always taken pride in using seasonal Suffolk produce at Fork and with phase 2 it is no different, sticking to local seasonal produce and always trying to let the Suffolk larder in all of its glory do the talking with flavours of spinach, asparagus and Suffolk new potatoes on the menu this month. You will also see when passing that we have had a little switch around in the shop to make it a bit more user friendly but don’t worry scotch eggs are readily available still. So if it is a coffee and a cake you are after or you want to have the perfect dinner party @floor2 just pop in and let us take care of the rest. Justin, Kairi, Tom, Sam & Harry

World Book Day Readathon Success for Hadleigh High School 68 High Street, Hadleigh Tel: 01473 823131 news@keithavis.co.uk www.keithavis.co.uk

CELEBRATE THE QUEEN’S

The photo shows James Rush (Wincer Kievenaar) and Rebecca Taylor (Literacy Coordinator Hadleigh High School) with the top prize Kindle winner and winners of book tokens for each house. Award winning Suffolk architects, Wincer Kievenaar, has teamed up with Hadleigh High School to support their literacy drive, with World Book Day 2022 providing the perfect conclusion for one event. As the school’s literacy coordinator Rebecca Taylor explained: “It is widely acknowledged that young people with poor literacy skills achieve less at every stage of their lives, compared to those with good literacy and this is shown not just in exam results, but health, well-being, finance and employment. We feel it is paramount to tackle literacy to overcome inequalities and allow all students an equal chance in life”. As such the School, in collaboration with Wincer Kievenaar, held a "Readathon" as part of their package to tackle literacy. This event culminated in a prize giving ceremony at Hadleigh High School on Thursday 24th March, where James Rush, Associate at Wincer Kievenaar, gave a speech and presented the prizes to the winning students. James Rush explained the importance of good literacy for future success and gave examples of how he and his colleagues require excellent standards of literacy on a daily basis. He praised the students’ efforts and encouraged them to continue developing their reading habits. Evie Newman, Winner of the Kindle said “I really enjoy reading - it is a way to escape the real world and be somewhere else. I didn't expect to win this morning but I was very excited to. I have always wanted a kindle!” Phil Branton is Director at Wincer Kievenaar and said: “We were delighted to be given the opportunity to play our part in the Readathon. Our involvement demonstrates that it is not just teachers who believe in the power of good literacy, but potential employers as well.” Students read 992 hours during the Readathon. Several students said it was the first time in a while that they had finished a book, and they were looking forward to reading more. It is hoped that the Readathon, together with other measures the school is taking to tackle literacy, will make a big impact on the literacy of many students at Hadleigh High School.

Hadleigh Guildhall Garden On July 2nd it will be 25 years since the official opening of the Guildhall Garden. The Garden was created by volunteers of Friends of Hadleigh Guildhall (FOHG). Some of us would like to celebrate this Silver Jubilee, perhaps with a party. Ideas and suggestions please. We would be pleased to hear from anyone who was involved during the time of FOHG, in the early days planning and creating the garden, or later, helping with maintenance, cream teas or promotion. Over the past 15 years or so, Matt Brinkley, founder of The Therapy Gym, has combined his experience and knowledge in the world of personal training with a commitment to those unable to access conventional fitness facilities. Providing accessible, personalised fitness programmes for those requiring extra support and guidance to improve their overall wellbeing, is now the everyday goal. “We have had such a great response from a wide range of people, in terms of age, fitness and ability. They are now benefiting from the commitment we have to every individual, many had never been to a gym before. That’s why we do it.” Covid has created additional problems to the accessibility of places to socially enjoy exercise and of course, the mental health pressures associated with isolation. The team at The Therapy Gym recognise individual needs and react accordingly, always monitoring, developing and supporting the progress made in the structured programmes. The flexibility of delivering fitness guidance through one-to-one, capped class size, at the gym or online, means everyone can join in, when and wherever they want. The Therapy Gym is perfectly situated just out of town, with onsite parking, easy access to the A12 and within 20 minutes travel time from Colchester and Ipswich. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre A great clean and clear up operation last month saw SJ Sargeant Contractors rebuilding the field fencing we had lost to storm Eunice. The ‘girls’ are back in their rightful paddocks with the friendship groups reestablished, so they and Lyn can heave a sigh of relief. Part of the cost of the fencing is being met by a special Storm Damage grant from Sport England for which we are most grateful. We also want to say a big thank you to the Cauduceus Lodge for their generous donation of £1,000, received last month. Alfie is pictured accepting the big cheque outside his stable, along with our Chairman Jan. All funds are much appreciated, and the ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ quiz on March 26th was a great success. Hosted by our very own Jan Derbyshire (our Chairman) who kept a close eye on proceedings to make sure there was no cheating! 20 teams enjoyed the fish and chips supper washed down by beer or wine, the many great raffle prizes, and raised between them £900.00 for the Centre. The herd and the riders we look after all say a big thank you to Jan and Bob Derbyshire and the fund-raising team for this their first indoor fund-raising event since they came out of lockdown. A raffle organised by the Tuesday team of volunteers will be drawn on April 5th to find the lucky winner of a giant Easter Egg. Can’t wait to see who that is! Well done everybody, you make us feel secure and we do love you for your efforts. After working in shirt sleeves at the end of March (see my photo of a lesson underway in the arena) to freezing temperatures with driving sleet at the beginning of April, the work has continued uninterrupted. All our special riders continue to benefit from what we do here and we absolutely love being part of this team. “Wanna” join us? We wish you a happy (and illness free) Easter and a brilliant two week break. www.shelleyrda.com 01473824172 shelleyrda@gmail.com

Hadleigh & District Flower Club The April Open Meeting was just great. We had Nick Grounds demonstrating in his quirky way - he did nothing in a triangle shape, used lots of greenery and beautiful flowers. His chat was interesting, covering his life as an auctioneer, life in Rutland and a lot of flower demonstrating around the country. Not sure his wife sees much of him! What an interesting, enjoyable evening it was. May brings us Vicky Hease on May 10th so please join us at The Hadleigh United Reformed Church, Market Place, Hadleigh at 7:30. All welcome.

Hadleigh Gardening Club Our April meeting was so entertaining with Deb Hart giving a talk on willow weaving followed by a demonstration on how to weave a garden obelisk. She kept us amused with her craft skills and history of weaving all sorts of bark and other natural fibres. Afterwards we auctioned the obelisk. Next month on May 9th a garden designer will be coming to give us inspiration. So do come along at 7.30 in the Guildhall. There are still a few spaces on the coach trip to Beth Chatto gardens on Tuesday 14th June. Inclusive cost of £18 members, £20 guests. To book a seat call Maggie on 01473 827082 and get more details. The use of slug pellets containing Metaldehyde has been banned as from 1st April 2022. Metaldehyde causes a risk to the environment and wild life. The problem is the pellets kill mammals too, either because they eat the pellets directly or because they eat slugs etc. that have been killed by Metaldehyde. It is particularly bad for hedgehogs, birds and toads. Another problem is that after heavy rainfall there is a rise in Metaldehyde in drinking water. There are alternative pellets that use Ferric Phosphate and these have not been banned. If slugs and snails are a problem in you garden then try going out with a torch in the evening and pick them up and put them in a pot of salty water. The other answer is learn to live with them. Look forward to seeing on May 9th. email: hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Lavenham Sinfonia Registered charity No. 109175 The second of three concerts performed by the Lavenham Sinfonia will be on Sunday June 19th 20022 starting at 19:00 hrs. Each concert this season will be led by a series of guest conductors who will bring some exciting interpretations of both familiar works, and some less well known. The season opened on Sunday 24th April 2022 with the conductor Thomas Duchan leading a programme of string music that included some well-known and favourite pieces by Elgar, Holst, and Purcell as well as the lesser-known Gerald Finzi and the contemporary Latvian composer Peteris Vasks. For the second concert the Orchestra is conducted by David Hammond and includes the Peite Symphonie by Charles Gounod composed in 1885 for the Societe de Musique pour instruments a Vent and first performed in Paris. It is scored for Flute, Oboes, Clarinets, Bassoons, and Horns. It will be followed by the Cello Concerto No.1 by Camille Saint-Saens. Composed in 1872, he wrote the work for the distinguished Belgian cellist Auguste Tolbecque who was the soloist for the first performance in Paris the following year. The soloist in June is the young cellist, Dominic Blanchard. The concert concludes with the immensely popular Symphony No.4 “Italian” by Felix Mendelsohn. This is best known and most popular of the composers five symphonies reflecting the music and atmosphere the composer experienced in Italy during his grand tour. It was first performed in London in 1833 with Mendelsohn conducting. Please do reserve the date for the concert which I am sure will reflect the warmth of the long summer evenings as we approach the Summer Solstice. The concert starts at 19:00 and tickets are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/lavenham-sinfonia. Do come and join us!

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

“Didn’t we have a lovely time, the day we went to Long Melford?!” One of our volunteers was singing a parody of a 1970’s hit after our Easter Fair last month. Not everyone remembers the song but the fantastic response to our event was reminiscent of our prepandemic fundraisers. Familiar friends (and dogs!) arrived to browse the stalls and enjoy a snack. Nearly £4,500 was raised including a generous donation from an anonymous supporter. Photo shows stalwart volunteer and Hadleigh resident, Elaine, behind the mask! Mum said it would be too drafty for me to attend due to the open windows and doors to blow away the virus. Fortunately our volunteers were on hand to help rescue a fledgling found on a nearby footpath, popular with dog walkers. The fluffy bundle was quickly brought home to Mum who identified it as a Tawny owlet. It is coming along nicely and will eventually be ‘soft released’ back to it’s home territory. We are looking for more enthusiastic people to join our fundraising team and reliable volunteers to care for the animals one morning a week. Please leave a message on our answerphone or send an email if you would like to help. There are still spaces on the Nayland 10K family-friendly run on Sunday 10th July, starting at Little Garth School, Nayland, CO6 4JR. This raises money for local charities including SESAW. There are routes to suit all ages and abilities. Book your place at www.nayland10k.co.uk The only place I’m running to now is the kitchen where Mum is preparing dinner for all the dogs including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. King Guthrum Group Just in case your readers thought last month’s article ‘English Defiance against Viking Invasion: East Anglia, Guthrum and the Danelaw’ was anything to do with the King Guthrum Group (as it was published next to our group’s update), I’d like to clarify that it wasn’t. We do, however, thank the author for her interpretation and interest. We may not share her view, but we welcome alternate interpretations and we share her passion for history. The King Guthrum Group does not seek to promote Guthrum as a hero or role-model, but rather as someone of local historical interest. Our aims are to promote the town’s heritage, encourage the understanding of our own history, and boost our tourist economy. Guthrum may not have been all-hero, but was he all-villain either? Even contemporary chroniclers sympathetic to King Alfred don’t paint Guthrum as a scoundrel once he had converted to Christianity, and appear to accept him as the legitimate ruler of East Anglia. He seems to have ruled peacefully over a kingdom of new settlers and old. His story might even be seen as one of acceptance and peace. Regardless of which interpretation of history you prefer, our group aims to promote interest in Guthrum and Hadleigh rather than a particular moral judgement on him. We believe people are capable of enjoying history whilst understanding it is often complex and filled with characters who are multifaceted. After all, people are interested in King Raedwald at Sutton Hoo, Thomas Wolsey in Ipswich, Richard III in Leicester. Many people visit those places and bring benefits to the local economies. Why not Guthrum, why not here? Since our last update, the King Guthrum Group has doubled the reach of our email newsletter. Individuals have, off their own bat, used their contacts with the National Museum of Denmark to find out more, spoken with local businesses about sponsorship ideas, searched local historical sources and sent us what they have found. We’ve been amazed by the response. There is a tremendous appetite in Hadleigh to know more about Guthrum and his times. Interest in him seems to have flourished in the past too. He was not always quite so neglected. We have found the script of a Hadleigh pageant from 1911 in which he featured. More about that in our next newsletter. To subscribe, email us at kingguthrumgroup@hotmail.com Huw Roberts, Chair, King Guthrum Group

HADS goes ‘Ooh La La’! Following on from our successful return to the stage in February this year, HADS is venturing forth again with a summertime comedy. ‘Allo ‘Allo, written by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, is based on the hugely successful British television series, which ran for 7 seasons. Described as “an uproarious comedy”, the show relates the adventures of a hapless café owner, René, in occupied France. HADS will be holding open auditions for the speaking roles for the over-16s at 7pm on Tuesday 10th May 2022 in Hadleigh Football Club. We are also looking for anyone interested in helping with the design and creation of scenery, props and costumes, as well as non-speaking roles to support our cast. The three performances of this comedy will take place on 24th, 25th and 26th August 2022 in Hadleigh Guildhall. If you would like to play a part, whether large or small, on stage or off, please come down to the Football Club at 7pm on Tuesday 10th May 2022 and get involved. All abilities are welcome and the Committee looks forward to seeing you soon.

Rotary Review Ukraine Crisis: What is Rotary doing to help? Bulletin No 2 The street collection mentioned last month took place on 25th March and raised £606 including £160 collected in Ferguson’s Delicatessen. A big thank you goes to them, their customers and everyone else who donated on the day. Further funds have come from members donations £203 and a Club raffle for a meal 2 kindly donated by Eight Bells which raised £56. Some of the donations are also registered for gift aid and this will boost the total to £901. All the money has been sent to Rotary’s own Disaster Response Fund which in turn will use this to provide help both inside Ukraine and for refugees outside through local Rotary clubs. Up to now more than £1 million pounds has been sent out and used to provide urgently needed medical supplies including painkillers, wound dressings, hygiene products as well as clothing, food and shelter. The club would also like to thank all the collectors for giving up their valuable time to help. Readers may like to know that before the war started there were 62 Rotary clubs in Ukraine and many of these are still operating and coordinating the aid coming in from nearby countries. Rotary is also established in Russia and since 1990 when the country opened up some 80 clubs have been chartered. The editor of the Russian Rotary magazine has been in touch confirming that it is almost impossible to operate Rotary at the moment. He would like to report the true facts about the war but this will be regarded as false news by the authorities punishable by 15 years in prison! So for the moment Rotary in Russia keeps a low profile ready to rise again once there is a major change of regime. Meanwhile Rotarians worldwide support Ukrainian people in their fight against this most terrible aggressor. Membership: The message in the last issue is worth repeating. The Club is now down to 10 members again and urgently needs new blood. Rotary has been in Hadleigh for 44years and would certainly like to see its 50th anniversary. If you feel that Rotary is worth keeping in Hadleigh and are interested in helping your local community and people worldwide please get in touch – contact David tel 01473 827226

French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, this last month has been a bit brighter for me and our small team at French’s. We have had some amazing people come forward to help us, like Julie Leach from Hadleigh, who wanted to help by paying for the repairs and for the field shelter company to get the shelter back up for our donkeys, thanks to her kindness and generosity the shelter is fixed and back up, which has pleased our donkeys no end, happy donkeys. Another lady stepped in called Pamela, who is an animal lover, with cats being special in her heart, Pamela made a donation towards our £2,900 vet bills, some of which was from the medication Hercules our beautiful cat needed with his brain tumour, when coming to the end of his life. Thank you must also go out to lovely Romina, who came to the farm met the animals and has asked to be a monthly donator, of course I said “Yes please”. I was tired after a long day at the farm, but I certainly picked up speed when running to get the sponsor forms for Romina. I am not afraid to let my desperation and excitement come through sometimes! Thank you also to Josephine and Karen for their donation. These ladies have picked me up when I felt so beaten and down, they have given me the push I needed to get on with the repair work and pay something off our huge bills. It is so lovely to meet people like these ladies that have stepped into help us at French’s. I would like to meet more, so if you want to do something for us with a donation, it will defiantly keep my spirits up and keep our charity going. I am still calling out for new helpers to put the shed up that has sat packed on pallets for months, if you have any spare time, please give me a call. I am also looking for a part time person who is reliable and hard working. Here are a few dates for your diary: World Donkey day is on the 8th May, you are welcome to come along on the 7th between 10am-1pm and meet our donkeys. We are planning an open day with BBQ on 26th June and a Barn dance at the Ansell centre in July, our next quiz will be on a Saturday evening 22nd October. We have sadly had to cancel our quiz night in May, as it clashed with the Hadleigh show. One of our volunteers is going to do a bike ride fund raiser for us, the fundraiser is called: 80 miles for 80th year. Pamela (shown in photo) volunteers weekly at Frenchs Care Haven and is soon to be celebrating her BIG 80th birthday this year, Pamela has set herself a challenge to complete 80 miles cycling around the local area in 2 weeks. We hope that you will support Pamela by sponsoring her. All money raised will be going to our charity to help in providing the care and health costs of our animals and to the opportunity we offer people suffering with mental health and for them to participate in animal therapy at French’s. With your kind donations and people offering to give up their valuable time to help raise money, we can offer therapeutic interventions to vulnerable people. To sponsor Pamela, you can follow the PayPal link on our website www.frenchscarehaven.org.uk and download a form. Also pictured is one of our donkeys Frankie, I am sure you recognise this beautiful boy from our posters. Frankie was very curious and was so gentle saying hello to Lottie, Lissy's new puppy. As well as on our website and facebook page for a sponsor form re: 80miles for 80th year or for other methods to pay rather than PayPal, you are welcome to contact me on the number or email below. On the personal side, I am still in need of a house in a peaceful location to rent long term, Can anyone help? Do you know of anywhere? If you do please contact me. Thank you. French’s is a charity on your doorstep, can you help, either with time, donations, or sponsorship. You are welcome to come along and meet our animals. Call me for an appointment. June Rose Brown 05/06/34 - 06/01/22 June’s nieces would like to thank all her many friends who kindly gave donations in her memory. A total of £1,270 has been raised and will be divided between Cancer Research UK and St. Elizabeth’s Hospice.

Hadleigh Community Forum Tuesday 12 April 2022, Chair: Richard Fletcher, Notes: Jess Janas 1 Welcome The Chair welcomed everyone. 2 Report Of The Last Meeting An amendment to the Tidy Town Report was made for clarity: “Keep Britain Tidy manages the eco-schools programme and over 1,000 new schools have registered since October. Hadleigh has an ecoclub.” 3 Matters Arising Richard Fletcher kindly volunteered to be December’s Chair. Jane Snowdon’s Review of 2022 will be an Agenda item. The counting of the age rings of the Lime Tree has “stumped” most! The closest was Sylvia Martin with a count of 230. In fact, there are some 210 (give or take a few….) 4 Standard Updates 4.1 Hadleigh Town Council The People’s Project panel has now been selected. Any ideas from the community for improving or entertaining the town should be submitted by 23 May 2022. Full details can be found on the HTC website. Neighbourhood Plan sub-committee had a successful stall at the Friday market, engaging with many people. More volunteers are sought to help with the character assessment of the town - if you can help, please email projects@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk. Vacancies: Two councillor vacancies in Hadleigh South ward. More info (or to nominate yourself) at https://www.babergh.gov.uk/elections/currentelections. Email the Town Clerk for more information on a Councillor’s role. Christmas Event Working Group: Volunteers needed for this popular event. Email Town Clerk. Queen’s Jubilee / Festival of Suffolk: 21/22 May: Torch Relay. 2 June: Beacon Lighting event. 5 June: The Big Lunch, Deanery Garden (more details on HTC website & Facebook page). Grants/Donations: 2022/23 Scheme is now open for applications. All details on HTC website. 4.2 Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council Digital Skills for Businesses Programme / Virtual High Street: free workshops and mentoring is still available. For more information email kathy.roll@babrghmidsuffolk.gov.uk Innovate Local Market Stalls: This successful scheme has been extended for a further eight months starting in May. Anyone interested in taking a stall, email justine@suffolkmarketevents.co.uk Careeriosity: Supports youth engagement, to raise their aspirations, with creative industries. Businesses or venues who could offer a session in Hadleigh for young people email clare.free@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk Women’s Tour: will be coming through Hadleigh in June. Details next meeting. Armed Forces Day: 23 June. Working with HTC as a day for the community to give thanks to “our boys & girls”. More details next meeting. Angel Court: (i) boundary stones with Angel Street need re-instating and some need replacing. Plywood hoarding between Angel Street and the Calais Street Rec should be removed. (ii) water meter covers in Angel Street have settled below level of pavement, causing a trip hazard.’ Update required on what is happening with McCarthy Stone’s planned nature reserve land near the new bridge. Thanks were offered to BDC for finally removing the railings around the bench on the Market Place. Some pot holes were identified. These should be reported online at Suffolk County Council – Highways. 4.3 Visit Hadleigh All note that no May Show tickets will be available on the day - all must be purchased in advance (Keith Avis) or online (www.hadleighshow.co.uk ). Memories of Cedric Morris exhibition went to Sudbury on 1/2 April. There was a steady flow of visitors, despite inclement weather, and was very well received. Benton End want the Exhibition there again on 3 June and tours of the other Wool Towns (Lavenham, Long Melford & Clare) are under discussion. 4.4 Tidy Town There will be no further reporting from Tidy Town. Anita Young has requested the following sentence be included in future Notes: “Tidy Town Volunteers litter pick on Monday and Friday mornings each week. If you are interested to join the team for a litter pick please see Hadleigh Town Council for details of where to meet. Gear will be provided. No commitment, just turn up when you can.” 4.5 Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Jan Devey’s army of volunteers will be returning, inside and outside the Practice for the 4th session of Moderna vaccines against Covid for the over 75’s and the immune suppressed. Sessions (for invited patients only) are on the mornings of 23 April and 7 May by. If you cannot attend, please DO NOT call the Practice to cancel or try to rearrange. There is no information forthcoming yet for other age groups. A new working group will be looking at improving access to, and improvement of, patient information and making appointments at the Practice, via the telephone and online. Once the working group has analysed, reviewed and simplified procedures, patients will be encouraged to book appointments online where possible. Discussions are underway to offer mini-IT courses on “how to do it” for anyone who would find this useful and support is offered by ACL (Jill Mason).

4.6 St MARYS CHURCH Decorative security bars have now been fitted in the Sacristy (downstairs) and Vestry (upstairs) and as soon as the safety rails at the head of the spiral staircase have been fitted visits can be arranged for anyone wishing to come and see them. The Reordering Committee is visiting Brent Eleigh church to see their air source heat pump set up to see if it would work at St Mary’s (Brent Eleigh being much smaller). Church architects are meeting with the committee to bring it up to speed from the beginning of deliberations (many years and options ago) to where it now is, so everyone has a full understanding. The Statement of Need (required by the Diocese before any approvals can be given) has to be changed and added to and this meeting will assist. The Lime Tree Project has now had advertising consent granted for the information boards at the side of the stump. Dates for your diary: Hadleigh Hidden Gardens: 11 June Midsummer Festival of Flowers, Music and Art: 25, 26 and 27 June 4.7 HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) Paul repeated details of the Family Day on Sat 23 April when 500 wildflower plugs, donated by BDC will be planted at the new cemetery. HEAT will have a stand at The May Show to welcome visitors. The River Brett Group will lead Nature walks along the river along with pond dipping. The Environment Agency monitors the river’s health this way and there are only two officers for the whole of the county, so eleven volunteer, accredited, river quality monitors will help to identify invertebrates. Data gained can be uploaded to the EA’s national database. The 8-week pilot of the Forest School for under 5’s is oversubscribed and due to start in May. There will be 24 children with two trained teachers. It will run on Thursdays initially for a 6-week period to test demand. The Forest School hopes to help children who have been socially isolated during lockdown to interact and become more confident. Thanks were offered to HTC for their support in funding this initiative. As a result of a meeting with James Cartlidge MP, a meeting has been arranged with Rebecca Pow MP Junior Minister of DEFRA and HEAT will ask her to support three schemes that will improve water quality and wildlife diversity in our rivers. The recent Volunteers Work Programme has now finished to avoid disturbing nesting birds and will re-start in September. 5 AOB Defibrillators: HTC and The Rotary have both given helpful support for the purchase and placement of a defibrillator at Londis. Training will be organised and publicised in due course. “Hadleigh’s Robert”: Jane Snowdon reported that Robert will now be seen around town with a hi-vis jacket and litter picking gear. He is happily collecting and says it has improved his mental health to have this responsibility. HCF Notes: Jess Janas sought (and gained) agreement that future reports into the HCN be sent by her as full Notes from the Meeting, rather than each Chair having to author a separate report. She thought it may encourage more Chairs to take the seat if they did not have to write a report as well. It would lessen time pressure on meeting the editorial deadline for the HCN. It is therefore even more important that all those giving regular updates supply a written report to Jess – preferably prior to each meeting, or at the meeting. The meeting closed at 5.05 pm NEXT MEETING: Tuesday 10 May 2022 @ 4:15pm. Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Chair: Rickaby Shearly Sanders

Hadleigh Walkers We had an enjoyable walk from Tattingstone in April with 17 joining us on a lovely day. For our May walk on Saturday 14th we are once again trying a route outside our immediate area. This walk is a little shorter than usual at 7.5 miles. We will depart at 0930 from the Lamarsh Lion a community pub on the Bures to Ballingdon Road (CO8 5EP). Our route will then be Edgar’s Farm, across the railway line and then follow the river Stour into Bures. From there we walk to Bures Mill, Mount Bures, Ferrier’s Farm, Cook Green, Clees Hall, Parkhill Wood, Alphamstone, Moat Farm and back to Lamarsh. The walk is a very pleasant one covering a wide variation of terrains – rivers, woods, rolling hills, open field etc. In addition, the Lion is noted for its real ales, good food and friendly atmosphere - what’s not to like?. If anyone is in need of transport please let us know and we will see if there is any opportunity for car sharing. For those coming from Hadleigh we suggest following the A1071 then left onto the A134 and take the back road through Assington to Bures. Go over the bridge then immediately right onto the Lamarsh Road. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

The Songs remain the Same Hadleigh Community Choir are well into rehearsals to bring you a wonderful summer of music. This year we have our own Summer Concert celebrating 10 years of the choir, which will be in the United Reformed Church, Hadleigh on Saturday July 16th. We are also taking part in St Mary’s Flower Festival on Saturday 25th June and performing at the Somersham Wheelie Fun Day on the 2nd July. The Choir exists to bring music and fun to our town, and over our ten years we have helped many to expand their musical knowledge and sing songs that they never thought they would sing. There is no audition to join the choir, no need to read music and no need for any previous experience. We welcome anyone who wants to give it a go. Everyone can sing if they want to, so why not come along one Thursday evening at 7:30pm and see what we are about. Email for more information contact-us@hadleighcommunitychoir.org.uk

Sudbury Dramatic Society Under Milkwood Sudbury Dramatic Society’s next production at The Quay Theatre is Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood, on at The Quay from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th May at 7.45pm. Originally written by Thomas as a radio play for voices, there is no real plot to Under Milk Wood; we follow the often bizarre inhabitants of Llareggub, a small, Welsh seaside town, over the course of one spring day. It is funny, sad, evocative, inventive, beautiful and full of Thomas’s joyous mastery of language With a cast of over a dozen people covering an age range of parts from childhood to dotage, the majority of the cast will be playing about five parts each. Director Neil Arbon has some innovative ideas for the production and says ‘This production of Under Milk Wood is going to be an exciting team effort, in an energetic and lively version, which aims to do justice to this powerful work’. The fascinating characters in Llareggub include Mrs. Ogmore-Pritchard, relentlessly nagging her two dead husbands; Captain Cat, reliving his seafaring times; the two Mrs. Dai Breads; Organ Morgan, obsessed with his music; and Polly Garter pining for her dead lover. Under Milk Wood is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th May at 7.45pm and tickets are available from The Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaysudbury.com or via www.sudburydramatic.com

The special evening was the result of a joint effort; organised by the Patient Participation Group (PPG), sponsored by the partners of the Hadleigh and Boxford Health Centre and hosted at St Mary’s. A corner of the Church had been transformed into an ambient party setting with subtle table lights, fresh flowers and a welcoming Bar. The gathering was to say thank you to all the volunteers who had given their time during the many Covid vac clinics since January 2021. In spite of the success of the latest Covid variant, Practice Partners, Managers and a goodly number of volunteers were able and delighted to attend. Guests enjoyed meeting up with fellow volunteers, many of whom hadn’t seen each other since their last duty and certainly not without the all invasive face covering. Hadleigh based, Hibberd’s catering, provided the most delicious selection of canapés which guests were more than happy to sample throughout the evening. Dr Nabarro thanked the volunteers for their dedication and support for the 61 clinics they had held dispensing a staggering total of 30,000 vaccines throughout the worst of the pandemic. As a token of their appreciation and in recognition of their efforts, the partners have decided to give the volunteers a £1,000 for a charity of their choice. There was a collective gasp of surprise and approval before team leader, Jan Devey, replied on behalf of her ‘Dream Team’. She thanked the Practice for this generous donation which was very much appreciated. However, from the feedback received, the volunteering had actually been a two way exercise; help for the Practice and a sociable, useful activity for the participants. The charity of choice will be promptly and democratically chosen by the end of the month. Sincere thanks to all involved in the success of the evening Jim Wilding, John Devey, Jill Howlett, The Very Rev’d Jo Delfgou, Alisma and Ash Hibberd, Tessa and Robert Salter for tdc Cordless Lighting. STOP PRESS:-The volunteers unaninmously selected the East Anglian Air Ambulance charity to be the beneficiary of the Practice’s donation.

News from Hadleigh Community Primary School Sports On Monday 21st March 2022, HCPS took part the Hadleigh Schools Under 11’s Swimming Gala at Hadleigh Leisure Centre. A total of 7 schools had entered the competition. Each school competed in backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke, and relay races. Throughout the morning, the atmosphere that all the children created inside the Leisure Centre was amazing. As a result of our team swimming brilliantly, we managed to place 1st in the whole competition and were awarded the winners trophy. Well done Year 5 & 6!

On Wednesday 30th March 2022, we took 24 runners to compete in the Year 4, 5 & 6 Cross Country festival at Royal Hospital School. There were around 100 pupils that took part in each of the 6 races. During the afternoon, all our Year 4 pupils had to run 1600m which was just short of a mile. Our Year 5 & 6 pupils had to run 2200m which was just over a mile long. Every pupil ran fantastically and something they should be proud of! Special mention goes out to 4 of our pupils who managed to finish in the Top 5 of their respected races. Well done Years 4, 5 & 6! Military Mates As April marks the beginning of the month of the Military Child, a time to celebrate the sacrifices military children make and the challenges they overcome being a part of a military household. Our Military Mates lunchtime club had the opportunity to visit the school forest. We enjoyed testing our climbing skills on the rope ladders and trees as well as creating dens and exploring.

Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School Sports Success This term we have taken part is several sporting fixtures where children have represented our school in competitions. Highlights of these events included a group of children from Sapphire Class taking part in an interschools multi-sports event at Hadleigh High School. There were a range of activities and challenges for them to take part in which resulted in an amazing first place from amongst seven schools. This was followed by a group of children from Diamond Class entering a dodgeball competition in a competition at the Inspire Centre, Ipswich. They worked incredibly well as a team against some extremely strong competition from amongst the Ipswich schools in attendance. We were extremely proud of all the children that attended these events, working together to be the very best they could be while cheering each member of their team on, knowing they had tried their absolute best. Easter Service Easter was celebrated this year with a service in Hintlesham Church led by Reverend Jackson and attended by parents, carers and other family members. The service celebrated the many parts of Easter with readings from Diamond Class, prayers from Sapphire Class, an Easter poem performed by Emerald Class and a song, that we were all singing for the remainder of the day, by Ruby Class about Spring Chickens. The children led the congregation to sing two hymns that explained the story of Easter and celebrated Christs rising once again. Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline and Charity Shop Although we carry out our work quietly, discreetly and without seeking publicity I would like to update you with some of the things we have been doing in Ukraine with the generous support of those who have donated to our appeal and which we have been doing since the first day of the conflict. We have teams of people who we coordinate with “on the ground” in Poland to whom we are able to send money to source and buy many of the urgently needed items and then pass them across the border to our people in Ukraine. Many of the things needed so badly are far cheaper if bought in Poland and the right thing can be bought as and when needed. We are using the money helping our teams relocate people to safety, providing urgent medicines, food & water, care products for children on palliative care. We have setup 2 aid delivery co-ordination points, one on the Polish Border the other the Slovakian Border. Recently we received a desperate request for help to provide specific care items and food for 36 families with severely disabled children stuck out in the villages. They were in desperate need of a mobile ambulance to help move these children, many of whom are immobile. We also managed to provide transportation for a child of 2.5 years who had his legs blown off by an explosion, to a specialist hospital in Germany who have offered to help him. I cannot include the photographs of this child as, with many other photographs we have, it would be too distressing for many to view. Several agencies had said they were going to collect the boy and his father but just did not turn up, this is where we were able to step in and help. We are able to help many people who appear to fall through the net of bigger organisation. Now we are expanding our operation of evacuating children and young people with specific medical needs, first to Poland where they will be assessed and then arranging onwards transportation to one of the special clinics across Europe that we are liasing with. I wish I could be bringing happier, more positive news but at the moment, this is the reality of the situation. We can only hope that a resolution is found sooner rather than later and that we can help the people of Ukraine to rebuild their homes and their lives. If you can support our Charity to donate please txt CCLLUKRAINE + 3, 5 or 10 to 70085 to donate 3,5, or 10 pounds. Elizabeth Parker, Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline 01449 760343

Letter from Layham www.layham.org

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 30 March were: • District Council Councillor Ward confirmed that Babergh had agreed its budget for 2022-23. In response to a question, he said the number of rough sleepers in Babergh was very low. Councillor Roberts said the Events Group had submitted an application for a community grant, but it was not clear whether events planned for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee had to be sportsrelated; Councillor Ward would check. The Chairman was pleased to note the launch of Warm Homes Suffolk, and said the initiative had already proved successful in Essex. • County Council A new strategy had been announced outlining how Suffolk would address violence against women and girls, prepared collaboratively by the Safer Stronger Communities Board (SSCB); SCC had contributed £350,000 to support the Board in implementing the strategy and action plan. The ANPR trial was under way in Capel St Mary, Holton St Mary and Bentley. Councillors reported some clearing of drains had taken place in Watermill Close, but said no prior notification had been received so that vehicles could be moved, which could be a problem if areas such as Brett Green were included; Councillor Hall would take this forward. • Jubilee Fete It had been agreed at the last meeting that the PC would make a contribution towards the overheads. It was agreed unanimously to donate £500. • Defibrillator on Stoke Road The quote from UK Power Networks was considerably higher than anticipated and Councillor Curran suggested looking for an alternative location. It was agreed to discuss this item in more detail at the May meeting. • Emergency Plan Following the Red weather warning in February, Councillor Curran had prepared a discussion document summarising the actions taken and feedback received from PC members and ELVs. It was agreed to review the Emergency Plan in detail later in the year. • Noticeboards The Clerk said the village noticeboards are in need of refurbishment (or replacement in some cases) and suggested obtaining quotes for refurbishment and/or replacement; this was agreed. • Queen’s Green Canopy A parishioner had been able to secure an ornamental cherry tree from the Woodland Trust, as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, and had asked if it could be planted on the Playing Field. The Clerk would forward details to the Playing Field Committee. • Community Governance Review The Clerk had received notification that Babergh would be carrying out a Community Governance Review of parishes, town councils and unparished areas. This was a statutory process and the first stage of the review process would be a consultation; further details and the terms of reference would be circulated shortly. The Village Hall The hall has been booked a few times over the past month and we are pleased to see it being used. Please email rosey.emma@btinternet.com to make an enquiry -she will be pleased to help you. Layham Playing Field 120 Club Winners for the April draw were: £25 Ticket No 104 Mayhew; £15 Ticket No 30 Hughes.

Country Threads and The Jubilee Memory Bears Tree planting, pudding competition, beacon lighting, street parties and concerts are just a few of the ways in which the nation will celebrate the Queen’s seven decade reign. In a quiet corner of Hadleigh and away from all the razzmatazz, the Country Threads craft group is diligently supporting a local initiative which will mark this historic occasion. Their tribute will not only provide a lasting reminder of the Queen’s dedicated service but also raise money for St Elizabeth Hospice at the same time. Sue Marshall has created a delightful limited edition teddy bear, resplendent in the distinctive colours of the Hospice; burgundy pale green and white. Each of the 200 bears will be carefully crafted and tastefully display its own number on the base of its paw. It will come with a St Elizabeth Hospice authenticity certificate. The bears can be purchased for a suggested donation of £40 each with all the revenue going to support the valuable work of Hospice. Country Threads members are working to help Sue by cutting out the many intricate fabric pieces ready for her to complete the lovable bears. Sue already has considerable experience assembling the pattern as, before this special consignment, she used the same pattern to make the bear from deceased patients’ clothing. To date, over 400 bereaved relatives have found their unique ‘Material Memory’ bear a comforting, lasting reminder of their loved one. Egret in the Brett Every day we walk to spot The egret in our river Sometimes it’s there and sometimes not We never know for certain. That doesn’t stop us walking it gives us motivation while we’re striding out and talking about wildlife conservation. The egret never makes a sound It’s silent, white and free It may take flight and wheel around then land high in a tree.

Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Suffolk moves closer to gaining a County Deal The Government’s Levelling Up White Paper, published in February, set out a mission that by 2030 every part of England that wants one, will have a devolution deal. This will include powers at or approaching the highest level of devolution, with a simplified long-term funding settlement. Suffolk was announced as one of nine county areas that have been invited to begin negotiation for a County Deal and the Government has indicated that it expects the first Deals to be completed in 2022. A County Deal takes devolution beyond the major cities and involves the transfer of power in areas such as transport, education, skills, housing, and planning. Suffolk has indicated it will pursue a for extra powers, without a Directly Elected Mayor. Additional powers could include control of local transport functions, bus franchising, devolution of the adult education budget and compulsory purchase powers. We have been developing content for discussion based on the devolution framework. This includes powers and budgets around skills, transport, the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, housing, Climate Change and Net Zero. We are also looking beyond this level to include Education, Community Safety, Energy Supply and Security, Property and Public Estate and Community Safety. We are also underlining the importance of connecting to Government agendas, most notably the Bus Service Improvement Partnership and the Health and Care Integration White Paper. Whilst a County Deal will be between the Secretary of State and the County Council, consistent with their collaborative track record, Suffolk council leaders will work collaboratively with public sector partners as well as private sector and VCSE sector partners to ensure we secure the best possible County Deal for Suffolk residents. Bus Back Better Suffolk’s application (for £77 million over three years) for Bus Back Better funding has been unsuccessful, and we have been awarded precisely nothing by the Department for Transport. Both Essex and Cambridgeshire were also awarded nothing, although Norfolk has been given just short of £50 million. Some press coverage of this may imply that Suffolk was not ambitious enough in its application, but this is not the case. Suffolk’s 100+ page application was submitted on time, and it was certainly very ambitious. We are seeking feedback from the DfT as to why we were unsuccessful and we are also talking to Norfolk to understand what they proposed which has brought them funding. Councillor Surgery I hold my monthly surgery on the third Saturday of the month, the next being on Saturday 21st May 2022 at 11:00 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street. Sunday 3rd April Sunday started off lovely and bright although very chilly for the weekend ladies playing a medal competition on the Constable course. Lesley Hitchcock had a brilliant round having a nett 68 coming in first place. Lesley managed to par holes 5 and 8 on the front 9 but she had an amazing back 9, with birdies at the 11th and 13th and Parring holes 10 and 15, a 9 on the 17th messed up an otherwise perfect playing card. Daily mail foursomes Stoke by Nayland ladies Katie Clark and Clare Nixon played the 2nd round of the Daily Mail foursomes on Sunday 3rd April on their home course. They managed to win the first round at Clacton in extremely windy conditions, after a very close front 9 Katie and Clare managed to pull away on the back 9 to win 4&2. Round 2 on Sunday was played on the Constable course which had dried out nicely and although a sunny day it became very chilly towards the end of their game. The ladies Katie and Clare were playing Sharon and Di Buxton were from Felixstowe Golf Club and it was an incredibly close game. Katie and Clare managed to go 1up by the 3rd hole and kept it that way until the 8th hole then going all square on the turn. Managing to go 2up on the 13th, losing the 15th and 16th meant they were once again all square. The Stoke ladies won the 17th only to lose the 18th meaning extra holes were needed for sudden death. Katie managed a great putt to par the first hole and so winning the match. It was an exciting match and a very friendly competition. Easter Competition results for Thursday 14th April On Thursday 14th April the ladies at Stoke by Nayland played a fun competition to celebrate Easter on the Constable course with the sun shining on their backs. In teams of four the ladies needed the best 2 scores to count, Ladies Captain Sue Gregory kindly treated all the ladies to chocolate eggs as they came off the 18th green. A presentation followed outside on the terrace with the ladies winning Easter eggs! 1st Janet Hodge, Margaret Bentley, Liz Kiddy and Sarah Wordley 88pts; 2nd Katie Clark, Clare Nixon, Johanna Stonehewer-Smith and Bev Thompson 83pts; 3rd Elaine Davidson, Lesley Hitchcock, Barby Jones and Liz Spencer 80pts. Best front 9 Hilary Cairns, Ann Kelza Smith, Susan Swan and “ghost” 37pts. Best back 9 Lesley Munro, Betty Cox, Fiz Grundy and “ghost” 44pts. (A ghost score was used where the teams were short of a player). Mixed Trophy Competition “Peter Blewitt” Jo Little and Del Prichard played out of their skins in the Peter Blewitt Trophy Competition with a score of 47pts on Bank Holiday Monday at Stoke by Nayland golf club on the Gainsborough course. It was a lovely sunny day and everyone enjoyed the American Greensomes format and there were lots of great scores. A presentation was held afterwards on the terrace. 1st Jo Little and Del Prichard. 47pts; 2nd Clare Rowan and Ben Lugton 46pts; 3rd Susan and Rob Swan 45pts ocb; 4th Rosie Mason and Paul Gregan 45pts. Hadleigh Tennis Club The Hadleigh Tennis Club expects to be promoted after coming second in Men’s Division 4 of the Ipswich & District Tennis League (IDTL). We had less success in Men’s Division 3 of the Winter Floodlit League and we will probably be going down as a result. Our Ladies put up a good show in IDTL Division 5 wining 8 out of 12 matches and finishing mid table. You may be aware that there was a fire at our club house a while back and we would like to thank the Hadleigh Rugby Club who came to our aid and kindly let us use their club house until new facilities can be built. Thanks also to the Council for restoring the flood lights which meant we could play throughout the winter season. This Summer Season sees us enter a new team in the IDTL Mixed League. Matches will be played both home and away on week day evenings against the likes of Woolpit, St John’s, East Bergholt, Stowmarket and Kesgrave. Our first match is on 11th May and our last is in 26th July. Why not come and join our Tennis Club? We have Club Play sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6.30 pm and 8.00 pm and Sunday mornings between 9.30 am and 11.30 am. We are a friendly bunch of male and female players of all ages and abilities so don’t worry about finding players at your level. If you have never played before we can also put you in touch with local coaches. For more information speak to Geoff on 07483 222179, email to hadleightennis@gmail.com or simply come along to a Club Play session

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have expanded their GP referral schemes to include Hadleigh, providing tailored support for residents to improve their health and wellbeing. In partnership with local health partners and the councils’ leisure providers – Abbeycroft Leisure and Everyone Active - both councils are continuing to grow the number of GP referral programmes at their leisure centres. Through the programmes, doctors refer patients with common medical conditions such as obesity, hypertension, or type 2 diabetes, to the councils’ local gyms for a programme of tailored exercise over a set period. Once on the road to recovery, patients are then encouraged to continue their rehabilitation and improved health through a longer-term membership. Last month, Hadleigh Pool and Leisure became the latest to join the growing list. It will be a one-year pilot to test demand, funded by the NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group. It builds on the already wellestablished programme at Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury, funded by the NHS West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group. A programme is also available at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre in Stowmarket, with one also soon to launch at Stradbroke Pool and Fitness Centre, ensuring support for residents across the two districts. Hundreds of Babergh and Mid Suffolk patients have been supported via the schemes since their inception. The schemes form part of councils’ commitment to supporting residents with their health, wellbeing, and recovery post-Covid, as set out in their wellbeing strategy. Babergh’s cabinet member for communities, Cllr Derek Davis, said: “Giving our residents access to the support they need to help them lead active and healthy lifestyles is vital, and the cornerstone of our wellbeing strategy. “We cannot achieve this alone, however, so working with our experienced leisure and health partners is key. “Increasing your levels of activity and improving your exercise routine can be a daunting task for anyone, let alone when coupled with underlying health conditions. That’s why with tailored support from their GP and Abbeycroft Leisure, our residents can get the lasting support they need to get their health on track for years to come.” Nigel Westwell has Parkinson’s and uses the GP referral scheme at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. He said: "Due to having Parkinson’s I was very concerned about my body strength as most people with Parkinson’s are susceptible to trips and falls and this was something I wanted to avoid. “Before I joined the scheme I would often stagger when I walked, but now I have improved my strength and balance and I stagger much less. “I’ve really enjoyed the sprints on the bike which have made my legs much stronger, and the upper body training has made me feel better overall. I am now able to manage my symptoms better, I’m sleeping better, and it’s given me a good appetite."
