TLC & Gardeners Wanted Once again the Community Gardens, in front of the Magdalen Road Car Park and near the bus stop behind the Coop, have given the town a wonderful show of spring flowers. How welcoming and cheery they were after the snow, rain and dull, cloudy days. If you are wondering what has happened to the larger bed under the tree at the bus stop please be patient and respectful of the space. Our knowledgeable and highly experienced gardener, Ken Marchmont, has tickled and scraped the soil so that the seeds from last year’s meadow flowers will be more than happy to take root and give us yet another wonderful Part of the Community Garden ‘natural’ looking display of colourful wild April 2018 flowers. Unless of course some weird weather upsets their progress or they are stomped on by passers-by. All the Community Gardens will soon be in need of some TLC e.g. weeding. Jane Snowdon will be coordinating a team working session before too long. So if you appreciate the gardens, enjoy gardening and would be willing to give an hour as part of a sociable working group please contact Jane. You will, of course, be adequately rewarded with coffee and delicious homemade cake afterwards. Call or Email Jane if you would like to support the Community Garden initiative. 01473 824957 snowdonjane@hotmail.co.uk

A Suffolk writer who previously lived in Hadleigh and attended Hadleigh High School has published her first novel, ‘When Love Meets Lust’. Stephanie Cross achieved this by spending thirty minutes each day writing down her ideas for a story, developing the idea over 2 years until they formed the novel that is available to buy today. Although Stephanie has previously written in a non-fiction capacity for a variety of publications in the UK and Australia she has always had the dream of writing a novel. By spending just thirty minutes each day she has achieved it. When asked about her achievement she said; ‘I am completely over the moon that I have finally managed to get a book published and out there into the world. I hope people will enjoy the book as much as I have writing it, and that it may inspire others out there who have thought about writing a book to persevere and get it out there.’ The novel is a romantic comedy following two characters called Ruby and Ryan and their journey together after meeting online via a dating app called ‘GirlMeetsBoy’. Stephanie was inspired by her friends’ experiences of online dating and the often hilarious situations they found themselves in and felt she had to write a book based on the stories she had heard. She also noticed that there were a lot of romance books out there but not many that dealt with people in their twenties and early thirties searching for love using dating apps. She felt there was a gap in the market to offer something a little bit different for people to read. The novel is currently available to buy in paperback and e-book on Amazon and will also be available to borrow for free on Suffolk Libraries online Overdrive system.

Deadline for copy is the 18th of each and every month

Hadleigh Church welcomes Suffolk Singers Saturday June 30th at 7.30 pm in St. Mary’s Church, Hadleigh

G# %"% IBBONS # Howard at Goodwood House

Relax and enjoy a concert of songs and music performed by this well-known Suffolk choir, led by Claire Weston, a former singer with English National Opera. Suffolk Singers will be providing an evening of music specially selected to complement the wonderful acoustics of lovely St. Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. The varied programme will comprise rousing anthems such as ‘O Radiant Dawn’ by James MacMillan; beautiful music by contemporary composers Arvo Pärt and John Hutchings; well-loved spirituals such as ‘Deep River’ as well as specially arranged ‘lighter’ pieces including ‘Love Walked In’ and ‘Spread a Little Happiness’. The concert will also include clarinet pieces played by an exceptionally talented young student, Lucas Evans. Something for everyone! Suffolk Singers has been established in Suffolk for over 25 years and has become one of the most accomplished amateur choirs in the county. They are a mixed choir of just over 30 voices whose harmony and blend as a choir goes from strength to strength. They have been winners of the Whitman Cup for the best adult choir in the Suffolk Festival and were among 10 international choirs to compete in the ‘Choir of the World’ competition at the Llangollen Eisteddfod in 2014. They regularly perform in churches and cathedrals in which their beautiful sound can resonate to full advantage. Suffolk Singers are invited annually to perform in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral and were recently privileged to sing in the superb Binham Priory in North Norfolk. In May 2018 the choir is making a trip to Belgium where they will perform in the cathedrals in Ypres and Ghent as well as singing as part of the ‘Last Post Ceremony’ at the Menin Gate. The choir hosts an annual workshop which is attended by over 100 singers from across the county and is very popular; make a note in your diary for the 4th November at Woodbridge School. In the meantime, don’t miss this opportunity to hear such a special local choir. Proceeds from the concert will be helping raise funds for St Mary’s Church. Tickets for this concert are ÂŁ10 and are available from: Peter Frost 01473 311240, St Mary’s Church Office, Hadleigh (10.00-12.00: M-F), The Idler Bookshop, 37 High Street, Hadleigh (01473 827752), or online at WeGotTickets.com. www.suffolksingers.co.uk

Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

In the February Community News we told you a little about ourselves: who we are, where we came from and how we are relevant in today’s world. Following that introductory piece, I am delighted to be able to let you know that the Trustees unanimously agreed a quite substantial donation to an applicant which will help with her placement as a student keeper at Colchester Zoo. We have also been very fortunate to receive donations from the Hadleigh Rotary Club and from a local business on the Lady Lane Industrial Estate, for which we are immensely grateful. We would particularly like to hear from any students due to leave Hadleigh High this summer and move either into employment where you will be undertaking further on-the-job training whilst being employed, or moving into an apprenticeship. We might be able to help you. How Can We Help You? We are happy to invite applications from anyone who has finished their education and is looking for assistance into an employed apprenticeship. We will also consider ongoing in-employment training. You must be resident in the IP7 postcode area. Application forms can be obtained from jessicanevard@btinternet.com or by calling 01473 822671. All applications will be discussed by the Trustees at their quarterly meetings (April, July, October and January) and all applicants will be informed of the Trustees’ decision at the earliest opportunity following the relevant meeting. How Can You Help Us ? We are a very small charity and are happy to remain so. However, if we are to help apprentices , we also need support. We are not currently looking to undertake any formal fundraising (we simply do not have the time or manpower) but if any small business or charitable benefactor in the IP7 postcode would consider offering us any form of funding, we would love to have a conversation with you. Again, please contact Jess Janas at jessicanevard@btinternet.com or telephone 01473 822 671. If you have any questions at all do, please, get in touch. The Trustees thank you for your interest so far and hope to talk further with you. Jessica Janas (Chair), Brian Lazenby, Richard Whiting, Richard Finch and Matt Paisley.

Rightmove data shows importance of No Sale, No Fee conveyancing Figures collated by Rightmove have revealed that 30% of all property transactions fell-through in 2016, highlighting the importance of using a no sale, no fee conveyancing service when you move home, such as that provided by Holmes & Hills Solicitors Of the 1.5 million new sales listings for properties that were added to Rightmove in 2016, 30% of all properties that were sold, fell-through. This is the highest percentage of sales falling-through in four years. Why are more transactions falling through? Property sales fall-through for a variety of reasons; however some of the most commonly cited reasons that attribute to a house sale falling-through are the length and complexity of the chain. If there are a number of transactions all dependent on each other, then the probability of an issue arising increases. This can then have a domino effect on all the other properties within the chain and can derail the whole chain. Economic uncertainty has impacted the level of activity within the property market, reducing transaction levels and the number of properties for sale. This can make it harder for those moving home to find their dream property and settling for a property that ‘is good enough’. But this can mean individuals may be less emotionally tied to their purchase, making the chain weaker and more susceptible to collapsing. How can you prevent your sale falling through? Ultimately, you have limited control to ensure that your property sale does not fall victim to the 30% of transactions that fall-through, however, there are a number of things that can be done to help progress your sale and minimise your chances of the transaction failing. Getting any paperwork and relevant documentation together so that it is readily available as required and does not cause any delays later on down the line Agree timescales with other buyers in the chain, this is particularly important if the move needs to happen at a certain time such as relocating before starting a new job. If a mortgage is required on the property, ensure that funding is agreed in principal from the outset so that you know that you can afford the property. Choose the right solicitors, Holmes & Hills’ boasts a fall-through rate well below Rightmove’s 30%. No Sale, No Fee Conveyancing Unfortunately should your property transaction fall through, you could be liable for any legal costs incurred as part of that transaction, which can equate to a substantial amount, especially if the transaction goes abortive at a late stage. However, a No Sale, No Fee Promise offered by Holmes & Hills conveyancing solicitors as standard* ensures that you would not pay any legal fees should your transaction fall-through for whatever reason outside of your control. Hadleigh & District Probus Club The object of the Club is "To promote fellowship amongst retired and semi-retired professional and business men". The Club was established in 1998 so we will be celebrating our 20th “birthday this year. We meet for lunch on the third Wednesday of each month at The George, High Street, Hadleigh, where Tori and Paul make us welcome and provide us with excellent meals. We started our year with the Annual Dinner at the Town Hall, a venue that is well placed for most members (and their guests) living in Hadleigh: a successful event with the catering provided by Cheryl Salisbury of Chaplin Catering. In the summer 19 members went on a boat trip down the Stour from Sudbury to lunch at the Henny Swan, a very enjoyable event despite the weather on the return journey. The electric boats of the River Stour Trust give you a very peaceful trip with minimal disturbance of wild life. In August the Stoke-by-Nayland, Hotel, Golf & Spa was the venue for the Club’s Ladies Lunch. We had three speakers during the year – local author David Norton in May, talking about Fallout, (his book asking how would communities behave when threatened by sea-level rise, flooding and coastal erosion?), Yvonne Free, the Town Mayor, in September and Derek Dunstone, optometrist, in January. The number of members in the Club is limited, mostly by the accommodation available for lunch, but we have room for a few more. Any person interested in joining should, in the first instance, contact the Secretary, Chris Drake, on 01473 808147, email chrisdrake29@talktalk.net.

County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser Hadleigh Community Transport – Connecting Communities One of the many privileges I have whilst holding the post of Hadleigh’s County Councillor is meeting and engaging with the many organizations and interest groups which form the fabric of our town’s society. Hadleigh Community Transport Group (HCTG) is one such body that I have recently visited to discuss and understand their concerns and challenges in the years ahead. It was incredibly enlightening, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the fantastic service they provide to the local and wider Babergh communities. During this first year since being elected, public transport has been very much in the forefront of issues I have had to try to address as best as possible. There have been changes to our local services’ timetables which has affected many and I have talked to the company in order to gain some mutual concessions. Suffolk County Council (SCC) is keen to encourage local solutions to transport issues and one very effective way is through their Connecting Communities (Suffolkonboard.com) initiative. Connecting Communities is a transport service provided by SCC designed to help people travel around the county of Suffolk who might not have access to a regular bus service. Hadleigh Community Transport have numerous accessible mini-buses equipped with tail-lifts, and cars, which are used for regular services to Shotley, Lavenham and around Hadleigh. They have other various services including a dial-a-ride vehicle for use for those with mobility issues, a car detailed for anyone requiring a lift for hospital appointments at great value in comparison to a taxi fare, and a pre-booked Wheels-within-Wheels service for connection to other public transport or your chosen destination. They also provide group use minibus hire and of course the essential number 90 bus service to Ipswich in the evenings and on Sundays. Should anyone have a need for transport around Babergh or Suffolk which cannot be met by our current public transport providers, then I wholeheartedly recommend contacting HCTG to see how they can assist. Please use their website or call them at: hadleigh.org; telephone: 01473 826242; Twitter @Hctg1 My monthly surgery will be on the third Saturday of the month, the next one being on 19th May 2018 from 11am until noon in the Sharron Elliott room of the Royal British Legion Club, George St. Highways faults can be reported at: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/ or by telephone on: 0345 606 6171. mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk mob: 0793 551 2591

Running Tips from FitFramePhysio Many of us will have been inspired by the recent London Marathon to pick up our running shoes and go for a run. This is fantastic and running, fitness, being outdoors is something that I am very passionate about and keen to encourage. Running is a great sport, relatively inexpensive, can be done anywhere and allows us to enjoy the beautiful countryside which Hadleigh has to offer. A little about me - I started running in school and was part of Ipswich Harriers running club (sorry Hadleigh Hares - it was just closer to home that’s all!). I went on to represent Great Britain at both European and World CrossCountry Championships and have a half-marathon PB of 76 minutes. Now a mum of two, I am juggling home life, work and running – a common theme for many of us. As an experienced Physiotherapist and from my own personal running experience I wanted to offer a few tips to help you remain injury-free and able to enjoy your running‌ 1. Check your trainers regularly for wear and remember to change your trainers every 300miles (sooner if you notice the tread has worn) 2. Build up slowly - as a rule of thumb, no more that 10% extra mileage per week 3. Incorporate some form of conditioning into your weekly programme such as pilates or strength and conditioning. This is really important as you need adequate strength and flexibility to cope with the load that is transmitted through your body with each step (1.5 to 3 times your body weight per step - if you think about how many steps you do per run this soon adds up!) 4. If you feel a niggle get it checked out by a Physiotherapist early to minimise disruption to your training I am based in Hadleigh and also offer home visits. My services include physiotherapy, running-specific pilates classes and running analysis. Please see my website www.fitframephysio.com or email me (Claire@fitframephysio.com) for more information. Happy running!

Hadleigh Evening WI I'm afraid that there is nothing exciting to report from our April meeting as it was all business. Every year , Resolutions are proposed within the W.I. on various topics and they are voted upon, at different stages, within each W.I. until one emerges as having the most votes throughout all the W.I.s and it is then debated and voted upon at the National Meeting, which this year is in Cardiff in June. This year , the issue of Mental Health has won the day. This, of course, is already being well-highlighted by the young Royals. Our Resolution is a proposal about Mental and Physical Health being treated with equal importance. Our W.I. Adviser, Sue Bevan from Levenheath, came to talk to us about legislation and proposals, already put forward by the Government, to help give greater access to treatment for Mental Health problems. However, we were left with the impression that this is a very complicated issue with no quick fix. Traditionally, we share this Resolution Meeting with Elmsett & Aldham W.I. This year they came to us and to our delight, they outnumbered us! It was a bit of a party atmosphere with the cake AND sausage rolls and we are very grateful to them for joining us and making it such an enjoyable evening. Next month is our AGM and we will also have a talk on, "Reflexology" by Penny Simmonds. New members are welcome to come and join us in the Seminar Suite above the library on, Tuesday 15th, May at 7.30 pm. Rae Stapleton

Kersey Mill Newsletter The weather during the early part of the year may have had us all damp and dull but Spring is certainly in the air. For those of you who may have been out walking and enjoying the surrounding countryside you will have heard the amazing bird song along with the courtship and posturing as the breeding season commences. The two pairs of Kestrels that have successfully raised 5 broods over the years are back again for the sixth year taking up their regular positions in the orchard and on the nesting box located on the front of the mill under the Locum. Again, the cameras will be on this year so as the eggs hatch any of you that are interested can view via the Glass and Craft Studio and watch the excited chicks feed and hustle for position. The swans are back and nesting already as are the grey wagtails that seem to adorn the mill pool and river banks.

The river has been full to overflowing with areas bursting the banks. The Environment Agency returned this week to repeat the fish count on the section of river to the rear of the mill. They use a boat and electronically fish which produces an accurate count and enables a close inspection on the condition of the fish. The last fish count was in 2012, encouragingly the results this year show a significant increase in stock. There were Roach and Pike which are regularly seen, but surprisingly Chub, Tench and several Bullheads and Stone Loach were also found. Works to the undercarriage of the Hurst Frame have been completed this weekend just in time for our next open day. Spring also signals the start of the open season at Kersey Mill with numerous private and public open days where the ongoing restoration works can be seen. Mills weekend May 12th & 13th. This certiďŹ cate is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis, 68 High St, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk This November our nation will mark a hundred years since the end of the First World War. It was a terrible, industrial-scale conflict which saw chemical weapons deployed at scale for the first time. Around 1.3m soldiers were killed or wounded by chemical attacks with agents such as mustard gas and chlorine. We said then that it would be the ‘war to end all wars’; we certainly hoped never again to see our troops blindfolded and shuffling along with their arm on the shoulder of a comrade in front, following blinding from chemical attack. And yet, that same terrible technology of chemical warfare used against our troops in the trenches a century ago, was recently deployed in Douma, Syria. The force responsible for the attack struck innocent civilians, leaving up to 75 people dead, including children and toddlers. It now seems irrefutable that the Syrian Government was responsible for deploying those weapons to murder, traumatise and disfigure the very same civilian population which it is their responsibility - like any civilised Government - to defend. In response, having reviewed the extensive evidence base, the Prime Minister committed the Royal Air Force to a limited series of targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian Regime’s chemical weapons capability. This action was taken in a co-ordinated response with our allies in the United States and France, and has been heralded as a successful action by national leaders from countries across the globe, including Germany, Canada and Australia. I believe that tyrants prepared to gas their own civilians cannot be allowed to conclude that it is a legitimate action. Committing to the use of force is a true last resort, a step no Government ever wants to take. But what were the options? Diplomacy is always preferable but Russia can veto any meaningful measures at the UN. Doing nothing would have meant more deaths, more chemical attacks, and more terrible suffering. We therefore committed to a proportionate, targeted air raid that undermined Syria’s chemical warfare machine without any reported casualties. It was a difficult decision, but I believe Britain did the right thing in seeking to check the terror that is chemical warfare.

Hadleigh Community Primary School “Let’s Go Yellow For Marie Curie!” On the 16th March 2018 pupils, parents and staff showed that they lived up to the name of a true Community Primary School by taking part in the first ever “Let’s Go Yellow!” campaign for Marie Curie. By selling daffodil badges, wearing items of yellow clothing and holding a cake stall the grand total raised was a magnificent £631.19! We are proud to say that the children showed kindness and understanding throughout the whole event. Music Our large choir had a busy few weeks leading up to Easter preparing for a performance in the High School Spring Showcase. It was a lovely opportunity for our children to perform some songs from ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ in celebration of the original show’s 50th Anniversary this year. The choir enjoyed seeing lots of talent from a whole range of curriculum subjects during the evening concert and it was a lovely end to the spring term. The choir will now continue to work hard in preparation for our summer concert at the end of May. Early Years Foundation Stage - Nursery Before Easter we went on a special egg hunt, not to find chocolate eggs but to find different creatures that laid eggs! We managed to find toy hens, ducks, geese, fish, frogs, spiders, snakes and dinosaurs which were hidden on the field. We were then lucky enough to see some real frogs that had just laid their eggs in our pond. We collected some frogspawn which we have in Nursery for the children to watch grow and change. Hopefully we will have some frogs soon!

Brighton Rock: Being a well-known book and familiar film members were interested to see how effective the stage version of Graham Greene’s dark novel, Brighton Rock, would be. Not an easy story to portray on the open stage at The Mercury Theatre where scenes on Brighton Pier, a bar and a bedsit were all required. It was absorbing and well executed with the cast skilfully adopting a variety of roles. Carriers Arms: It was the combination of price and tasty pub food that attracted Lunch Bunchers to this historic Grade 11 listed watering hole in East Bergholt. A delicious two course meal was £8.95 with plenty of choice to suit all palates. A relaxing, enjoyable meal in good company. Leonard Bernstein Centenary: All the best artistic talent was mustered to pay tribute to this exceptional composer. Members were treated to a feast of three new and entirely different ballets. All were set to his music and created for the occasion. Beamed in live to Cineworld, Ipswich from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden it was a magical evening which successfully transcended the lousy weather and everyday events. The Changing Fortunes of Otters and Voles: It was not until Darren Tansley, gave a talk about these fascinating creatures that members were aware that these lovable mammals have been very close to disappearing completely. Darren, who is Water for Wildlife Officer at Essex Wildlife Trust, has monitored the serious decline and recovery of theses mammals Darren Tansley throughout his career. As always no single factor was responsible for their changing fortunes and Darren and the Trust have worked tirelessly to address the many problems affecting the creatures’ progress and well-being. Numbers are gradually improving but there is no place for complacency as the future of these two endearing creatures is far from secure. An informative, entertaining talk with brilliant illustrations. JD

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Who can see my health record? There are often situations where it would help medical staff outside our GP surgery to help us if they had access to our health records. These staff could be in hospitals and A&E departments or they could be out of hours doctors or from the ambulance service. But you have to give permission for these people to view your records and it is very easy to do this. You can pick up a form headed ‘Who can see my health record?’ from reception at the Hadleigh or Boxford surgeries or you can go onto the Practice website and click on ‘Summary Care Record and Record Sharing’ and download the same form. Since November, over 800 patients have consented to share their information and the PPG hopes that many more will join them over the coming weeks. All it takes is two ticks and a signature on the form and you will be helping medical staff who may be treating you in an emergency. Why not join the Virtual PPG? We appreciate that everyone leads full busy lives and may not have time to attend PPG meetings. With this in mind, we have created a virtual discussion group to encourage wider patient participation and representation. This means we can keep in touch via an online discussion board. If you are a patient at Hadleigh or Boxford, if you are passionate and committed to improving quality care and would like to have your say, we would like to hear from you. To join the Virtual PPG, email us at hadleighboxfordPPG@gmail.com For any further information about the PPG please contact: Lindsay Panton, PPG Chair hadleighboxfordPPG@gmail.com or Tracey Squirrell, Practice Manager tracey.squirrell@nhs.net 01473 820127

Reasonable Force How far can you go to protect yourself if an intruder breaks into your home? It's been a familiar question but one that is once again being posed up and down the country after a pensioner was arrested on suspicion of murdering a burglar. The 78-year-old, named locally as Richard OsbornBrooks, discovered two men at his home in Hither Green, south-east London. One suspect, armed with a screwdriver, forced the homeowner into his kitchen where a struggle ensued and the alleged intruder was stabbed, Scotland Yard said. The 38-year-old was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead soon after. While the CPS and the police urge people to always ensure their first port of call be to alert police, where do you stand if you feel you have no other choice than to defend yourself or your family? According to official guidance, anyone can use reasonable force to protect themselves. In general terms, that means the more extreme the circumstances and the fear felt, the more force you can lawfully use in self-defence. You are given greater protection under the law if force is used to protect yourself or others when dealing with a burglar or trespasser on your property. The law allows a householder faced with an intruder to use disproportionate force as long as it is not grossly disproportionate. The level of force used will be measured against the threat that the householder honestly believes he is facing. Whatever degree of force is used, even if disproportionate, it must still be reasonable in all the circumstances as the householder honestly believed them to be, if the householder is to avoid prosecution. The law doesn't require you to wait to be attacked before using defensive force but does not protect you if your actions are over-the-top or calculated revenge - for example, knocking the intruder unconscious then kicking and punching them repeatedly. What about if the intruder is killed? The CPS says if you have acted in reasonable self-defence, as described above, and the intruder dies you will still have acted lawfully. Indeed, although Mr Osborn-Brooks was initially arrested, the CPS decided that he should not be prosecuted. It is important to note that if you chase an intruder as they make off, you are no longer acting in self-defence - however, you can still use reasonable force to recover property and make a citizen's arrest. The CPS urges homeowners to consider their own safety first though. How can Gotelee help? If you find yourself facing investigation or prosecution by the police and need expert advice from a Criminal Law solicitor, we can help. You may need us to defend an allegation wrongly made. Our solicitors will find out the circumstances, advise you and represent you if the case goes to court. We often act for the parents of children and guide the family through a particularly stressful time. We have offices in Hadleigh, Ipswich, Felixstowe and Woodbridge. Playstation Pre-School The Summer term is always our busiest and we are going to be working on; fairytales, on the farm and will have a messy week to get the term started. Look out for updates of the children having fun with these topics and playing with the new kitchen on our facebook page. We have had our first parent’s evenings this month and hope that both parents and children benefit from this opportunity to chat with staff. The staff were all relieved when March was over and they could indulge in chocolates, biscuits and cake once more. Thank you to everyone who sponsored our give up March event and to those who supported the cake sale, bought raffle tickets for the Easter drip cake kindly made by Sian Fenton and bought Mother’s Day cushions kindly made by Sharon Ward. The total money raised in March was close to £500 which will be used to re-decorate the room. Our Easter craft morning was well supported and it was lovely to see older and younger siblings taking part. Look out for more craft opportunities in the Summer holidays. Playstation’s AGM is on Thursday 10th May, 7.30pm at Playstation. We would love to see more parents at meetings, so if you would like to know more about how the pre-school is run please come and join us. Finally, the committee and staff would like to say a fond farewell to Veronica who has stepped down as treasurer after almost 10 years in the job. Veronica has played a huge part in keeping the pre-school going over many years and both the staff and committee would like to thank her for her dedication and commitment. Do you shop online? If so do it through easyfundraising.org.uk and raise a free donation for Playstation Pre-school – Hadleigh every time you shop! Visit www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/playstationps to register. We offer the universal entitlement of 15 hours free childcare for 3 and 4 year olds and are proud to say we also offer the extended entitlement for those families who are eligible. To find out if you are entitled to these extra hours please go to the Childcare Choices website at www.childcarechoices.gov.uk If your child is going to Hadleigh Community Primary School Nursery, we do a collect and delivery service, you will receive your 15 hours funded places with the nursery and would have to pay for a place at Playstation lunch club and session. Please note 2 year olds may be entitled to 2 year funding the term after their 2nd Birthday, if they meet certain criteria. If you would like any further information please contact Hannah on the below number. If you would like to enquire about places at Playstation we can be contacted at playstationhadleigh@btconnect.com. On the 29th of March I held a raffle to raise money for a Holland football Tour that the boys will be going on in April 2019. The aim is to raise enough money so each player can attend at no cost so no child is left behind. I am pleased to say that we managed to raise £400 towards the trip and would like to thank the following businesses for their prize donations, T-fitness studio at Hadleigh Business Centre, Molly’s Convenience Store and Sweet Memories on Hadleigh High Street. Your donations were much appreciated and when added to prize donations from the teams parents you helped us to boost our ticket sales. It is so lovely to have local businesses support our local youth team and again we would like to thank you for your kind donations. Elena King

VETERINARY PRACTICE Providing Pet Care 24/7 For Over 100 Years

Doing it yourself, or doing yourself in? Here at Hadleigh Osteopaths we can almost predict the sorts of injuries we will be seeing after a bank holiday weekend. It seems to be a peculiarly British obsession, that given a long weekend, the great British public will suddenly develop a passion for DIY and home decoration. Men or women who wouldn't usually lift a screwdriver are suddenly filled with the urge to lay a patio or put down some decking. Some people who have been gazing at tired walls since Christmas are compelled to climb ladders and strip wall paper and paint ceilings. If the weather is good, an entire 3 day weekend can be spent working in the garden, often with uncomfortable consequences! Our telephone at Hadleigh Osteopaths will begin to ring shortly after the weekend, and we can often make a fairly accurate assessment of how various people spent their weekends as they begin to describe their symptoms. Grumbling low backs can be exacerbated by lots of bending and lifting. Particularly if there is that added pressure to complete the task in an extended weekend. A disc injury may not become evident until a day or two later, but can often be traced back to a few days of enthusiastic DIY. This may or may not be accompanied by sciatica, which gives associated pain into the leg. Painting ceilings and hanging curtains can upset a neck that has a degree of wear and tear or spondylosis. Again, you may not feel it at the time, but a day or so later a stiff and painful neck may give an indication that it was not used to activity that involved working with your arms above your head and your neck craned back. This may also result in referred pain or pins and needles in to the arm or hand. Repetitive strain injuries such as tennis elbow may be the result of painting and decorating or window cleaning, rather than a few hours on the tennis court. If you are planning a project over the bank holiday, do try and be realistic about what you can really expect to achieve in one go. If you over stretch yourself, you may put yourself out of action for several weeks, and not be able to enjoy the fruits of your labours as you hoped. Ensure that you have the right tools for the job, and that you are not compromising your health by taking on those jobs that are perhaps best left to someone more able, more familiar or more physically suited to the task. If you do injure yourself, be assured that you will probably not be the only DIY enthusiast who has done so! Help and advice is just a phone call away. 01473 828585 or 07770746224 Hadleigh Osteopaths, Hadleigh Pool and Leisure, Stonehouse Road or email us on osteopathyinsuffolk@gmail.com

Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson

A full grooming ser vice for your dog Ipswich • Stowmarket • Bur y St. Edmun u ds

Can life get any more exciting? The day after I co-presented a chocolate tasting session at the Adnams shop in Hadleigh, pairing chocolates with wine (yay!) Simon and I learned how to make real pasta, bread and other delicious food items at Mark David’s Cooking Experience in Ipswich. This great chef had now invited me to do a presentation at his stall at the Hadleigh Show. Well. It would be rude not to, wouldn’t it? Here is one of the recipes we cooked, and it is delicious. So, do look out for us at the Hadleigh May Show where I for one will be sampling all the great things that East Anglia has to offer. Thank you Mark, thank you Adnams, what a lot of food for thought. SALMON AND COD PARCEL WITH LEMON AND TYME (serves about four) 500gms fresh salmon fillet, 500gms fresh cod fillet, skinned 1 lemon, 1 sprig fresh thyme, ½ jar sundried tomatoes 2 cloves crushed garlic. Prepare 6 double foil sheets by cutting out 12 squares approximately 9 inches each. Cut each fish into 6 whole pieces and divide between the 6 parcels. Top with slices of lemon, the garlic and sprigs of thyme. Season well and drizzle some white wine over each one. Finally put a knob of butter on each one, fold into parcels leaving a void for air. Bake for approximately 35 minutes at 180°C Allow the parcels to rest for 5 minutes. Open, serve with rice or vegetables and enjoy!

Are you a morning person, a late riser or do you take a while to wake up? Unfortunately for me, a lie in is never an option because Mum needs to get up very early. Despite my reluctance, I’m one of the first out of the door as we all rush into the garden then it’s back to the kitchen for buttered toast if we are lucky. As we all settle down Hettie the ex-battery hen wanders in, softly clucking and scratching at the floor then wanders out again to dig in Mum’s plant pots. Many of the permanent residents are getting on (not me of course, I am in my prime!) and so are some of the animals awaiting new homes. Lily is an elderly dog that has recently moved into foster care and she is enjoying every minute as you can see in the photo. If you are looking for a pet to complete your family please consider an older dog, and contrary to popular belief, they CAN learn new tricks! Our talented crafters send a big thank you for all the materials and wool you have donated. These have been used to make lots of quality items to be sold at future events. The Fundraisers are preparing for our £1 Sale at St. Lukes Church Hall in Tiptree next month and a Summer Sale in Newton Green in June. Next time I’ll tell you about the animals needing news homes so I’d better go to meet them and make sure they know I’m Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Our local charity needs urgent help in finding new grazing land with a barn and outbuildings. An urgent appeal goes out to all of our community and surrounding villages. Please look at who you know that may be able to help us, or are you in a position to help a worthy cause find a new home? We have 4 weeks left to find somewhere to relocate to with our rescued animals. The rescued animals we have left are old and need extra care as like someone would if they were sick or elderly and need the support of living in a care home. Life for all of them will be in care with me until they pass, I am determined that they will not be put to sleep or split from their animal and human friends. They have the regularity of a good daily routine, they are retired and have a social life with their friends and they have the love, medication and care they need and deserve by me, my helpers and the young people who come to us at French’s for mental health support, but to continue we are really crying out for some help finding a new home. It is very sad for us that the new owners from London have decided to come and develop on land that has housed horses for more than 30 years, it seems every other local you speak to has learned to ride at French’s Farm, it is heartbreaking for me as I have kept horses at French’s for 11 of those years and have worked hard developing a place where animals and local people get help in times of trouble. So far I have been on BBC Radio Suffolk and West Suffolk Radio, along with the news feature of East Anglia Daily Times and Suffolk Free Press. I have also had a meeting with our local MP James Cartlidge. I need help and fast as the clock is ticking, there is the land and outbuildings out there and surly someone would like their property looked after and put to good use by a worthy cause, rather than standing empty. I have approached a couple of farms where they have had empty facilities, but it seems they choose to keep them looking run down and derelict, than being brought back to life and put to good use, what a shame. If you have any spare time to offer, or advice with anything you feel might help us in these worrying times please get in touch, if you have an idea for some fund raising, donations or become a sponsor, or you feel you can do something that will help our animals in their move (which will be expensive and need all hands on deck) then again, please do get in touch with me, details below. Ghost Galaxy Sun 5th Rise 05.25, Set 20.39; 15th Rise 05.08 Set 20.55; 30th Rise 04.49 Set 21.17. Moon New 15th, Full 29th. Planets Venus is blazing away in the evening sky after Sunset at magnitude -4.0. Mars is located in the pre dawn sky in the constellation of Capricornus at magnitude 0.8. Jupiter is at opposition this month and visible all night, though located low down in the constellation of Libra. Saturn is also located in the pre dawn sky and shinning at magnitude 0.3 in the constellation of Sagittarius. Picking up any astronomy book will show you ultra-sharp pictures of galaxies with uniform outer brightness that gradually increases until you see the a dense central condensation. This, of course, makes perfect sense because with a central, super massive black hole exerting its huge gravitational influence, one would expect to see higher concentrations of stars and Ghost Galaxy - NGC 1052 DF2 dust at the centre and a general thinning out as you move away from the centre to the outside. But with this said, let me introduce you to the catchy named NGC 1052 DF2 above. This galaxy resides in the constellation of Cetus and lies at a distance of 65 million light years away. This means that the light hitting our eyes today began its journey when the dinosaurs on Earth were having a bad day! Notice how you can see straight through it! It is not your typical thick mass of material that one is used to seeing- the cause? Astronomers believe this galaxy to have little or no Dark Matter. (Dark Matter is a theorised non-baryonic form of matter that may account for 80 percent of the mass of the Universe; or in layman's terms, Dark Matter is the builder's scaffolding for the Universe, it holds things in place and together; without it chaos reigns. This is a well sized galaxy too, about the same size as our very own Milky Way, being some 100,000-180,000 light years across , but that's where the similarity ends. Our galaxy homes some 100-400 billion stars, but this new type of galaxy holds 1/200th of that amount so the distance between stars is much larger than our own.Because this galaxy is lacking so much material, we can actually see other galaxies through it! If it turns out that NGC 1052 DF2 is truly lacking any Dark Matter, it would mean our theories of galaxy formation would be thrown out of the window to a certain extent. The hunt will now begin for for its brethren. Until next time, clear skies! Neil Norman FRAS. neilnorman03@gmail.com for any questions you may have.

The D.I.Y. Deli - Cold-smoked prawns Essential equipment 1. A cold smoke generator; we recommend the ProQ, which is widely available in two sizes priced at around £35 & £50, capable of 8-10 & 16 hours smoking respectively on one fill; they look (pictured) like a maze made of stainless steel gauze; Shorter smoking periods can be achieved by placing a block of wood, cut to size, in the channel of the smoker. If you want to get ahead of the Joneses you can get an electrically powered state-of-the-art generator for around £500. 2. Something to put it in; this can be any of the following: a cardboard box with holes in the bottom and an exit hole in the top; the exit hole needs to be of an adjustable size; this can be achieved by using a beer mat with a tea cup to add weight; An unlit BBQ. With either of the above you will need a stainless steel rack raised on bricks to bring the prawns into better contact with the smoke. Or a purpose made hot/cold smoker; have a look at the products from Charbroil & Weber; these come in a range of sizes from £150-£500; they come with a hot smoke generator that doubles up as a BBQ; the cold smoke generator (not included with the appliance) goes in the bottom and the prawns on one of the racks towards the top Ingredients 1lb (1 pint) Raw frozen king prawns (shell off, weight of ice included) 1 level tablespoon Soft brown sugar; 1 level tablespoon Sea salt 1 level teaspoon Smoked paprika 1 level tablespoon Standard (not extra-virgin) olive oil Cherry wood dust - qty depends upon your smoke generator Method 1. Thaw the prawns & remove the dark entrail using a sharp knife; place in a glazed ceramic container that will accommodate them not more than two high 2. Thoroughly mix the sugar salt & paprika and coat the prawns 3. Leave to cure in the refrigerator for two hours 4. Wash off the cure in cold water and pat dry 5. Dry on a rack in the refrigerator for one hour 6. Cold smoke for 1-2 hours according to taste 7. Leave refrigerated for around 2 hours to allow the smoke to infuse Do not freeze; they will keep refrigerated up to 12 hours To cook and serve Brush the surface of a ridged pan with olive oil & cook over gentle heat until pink; do not overcook. Serves 4-6 as a starter or 2 as a main course Tip While you are waiting for the prawns to cure (and at any time before any cold smoking process) smoke some cheese; no need to cure it – just cold-smoke it; fruit woods such as cherry and apple are great with cheese; avoid woods such as oak and ash (aka “hickory”). Taste it from time to time, most cheeses will do nicely in about an hour. Don’t eat it all on the day it’s done; the smoke flavour will enhance with storage for up to 2 days and properly wrapped it will keep for several weeks. Washed-rind cheeses such as brie and camembert need to be pierced with a meat fork to enhance smoke penetration. Recommended Cheeses: 1. Poky cheddars such as Isle of Mull 2. Taleggio – a fine semi-soft Italian artisan cheese of mild but distinctive flavour; the best examples come with a coloured paper outer; available in most branches of Waitrose & some Morrisons or a real cheese shop 3. Port Salut – smoking gives this mild cheese a big lift 4. Brie de Meaux or Camembert Next month: Hot smoked whole chicken.

Hadleigh Steering Group The Hadleigh Steering Group is open to all members of the community. It gives you an opportunity to meet other residents and air your views on some of the issues affecting our town. Unless, of course, you prefer to listen. Everyone is welcome. Traditionally we meet at the Leisure Centre on the first Monday of every month but because of the May Bank holiday our next get together will be on Monday 14th May from 4.15 – 6pm. Meeting 9th April 2018 Last month’s meeting was well supported with several attendees coming for the first time. Jan Devey chaired the meeting. In the absence of a permanent Chairperson, Jan asked if other members of the group would be prepared to take a turn so that the group could continue its useful work. Kathryn Grandon will Chair the May meeting when the main agenda item will be a presentation by Suffolk County Council outlining their vision for Suffolk in the next 30 years. April’s Main Agenda Item Patients Building Better Participation. Patient Participation Group (PPG) member, Mike Turley, gave an excellent presentation about the role of the group within the Hadleigh and Boxford Group Practice. He explained the link between the practice and PPG members. Members will become involved in the range and quality of the services provided and take part in the decision making process that leads to any change in our existing services. The PPG can also help with patient surveys, sharing the outcomes, newsletters and patient feedback. The PPG, which was formed in 2011, was originally an Email group. This was to encourage patients to become an integral part of the practice. As of May 2016 the PPG developed into a face to face ‘core’ group which meets at the Health Centre on a bi-monthly basis. The aim is to have a broad range of patient members so that it is a truly representative group. It is currently chaired by patient, Lindsay Panton. The Practice is represented by Dr Iain Lyons, and Practice Manager Tracey Squirrel, together with other patients from both Hadleigh and Boxford. There is still room for more. Mike said that the PPG was well aware that our small core group does not fully reflect the practice population and that many people are too busy to attend. To overcome the problem a new virtual discussion group (VPPG) has been created. This means we can keep in touch via an on-line discussion board. If you are a patient at Hadleigh or Boxford Group Practice, you are passionate and committed to improving quality care and you would like to volunteer to be part of our VPPG, then we would love to hear from you. Please contact hadleighboxfordppg@gmail.com The PPG will also help disseminate information about any innovative ideas coming to the practice e.g. Care Navigation and Sharing Your Medical Records. Information concerning both were available at the meeting. Lindsay Panton introduced herself to the group and both she and Mike fielded questions about the PPG. Progress Reports were given on • Tidy Town Team: Cut down bushes had exposed previously hidden rubbish. Successful litter picks had taken place throughout the town with the sociable gathering for refreshments afterwards. New volunteers always welcome. Anita Young • Music Festival to be launched on 21st April at the St Mary’s Art Show with guest appearances, starting at 4pm, by The Hadleigh Ukulele Group. From 5pm refreshments will be available followed by the Serendipity choir and the Hadleigh Orchestra. Entry fee to the Art show. Donations welcome to support an appeal for a large musical instrument in Hadleigh. Ian Grutchfield • Website: Masses of information about the town’s activities and events including forthcoming Art Show, Music Festival and Vintage Market. www.visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk/events/. Stuart Service • Town Council: Kieron Ruddy is a new councillor. • Babergh: The meeting on 10th April in The Guildhall has been postponed as the proposed merger with Mid Suffolk Council is on hold pending a ‘Unitary Council’ survey. Kathryn Grandon • Corks Lane & Angel Court Developments: Members were reminded of the public consultation sessions concerning these two developments would be on 11th and 18th April from 3 – 8pm at the Cricket Pavilion and Guildroom respectively.

Our last meeting Monday 9th April 2018: It has been a great start to the new year for our club, as last month we welcomed four new members. The weather was damp and dreary for our April meeting but the topic of 'sweet peas' was one to lift our spirits, everyone seems to have a soft spot for these delicate, beautifully perfumed flowers. Sweet peas have been grown in this country for over three hundred years and John Hewson shared with us his tips for successful germination - a pot of damp compost topped with a shallow layer of silver sand, pop the seed on top, cover with another layer of damp compost, cover with a sheet of perspex and water again only when the seeds come through - simple! With lots more useful tips, the main one being to make sure there is plenty of room between plants in order for them to grow well , John inspired everyone to have a go. The photo shows John with club members keen to purchase some young plants. It was a busy evening with everything on the plant sales table being snapped up, a successful raffle and a large number of entries in the daffodil competition - we hardly had time at the end for tea and biscuits! Our next get together on Monday 7th May 2018: We are out and about this month with a car share visit to Ulting Wick near Maldon, to the garden of Philippa Burrough. There are eight acres of garden to explore with plenty to offer for every season but particularly at this time of year with thousands of tulips. This is a garden new to the club and we are very much looking forward to what it has to offer. If you are interested in joining us please contact Maggie on 01473 827082 for more information.

Down to Earth ...with Dave By the time you read this spring should have at last arrived, by my reckoning we are running about three weeks late this year. This does not really matter as what is lost at the start of the season is made up for later on. The main problem is that everywhere is so wet and it is best not to tread on the soggy ground or grass. I try to work off paths or, when planting out on the allotment to work off old scaffold boards. The nicely chitted potatoes have been planted in rows leaving plenty of space between the rows for earthing up. As soon as any growth shows this is covered with soil. We are quite likely to get some frost and if we do then the covering of soil will protect the fresh young growth. The standard fuchsias have at last been moved out of the greenhouse to a protected spot in the garden. Now there is a bit more room in the greenhouse three cherry tomatoes have been planted in a large basket hanging from the roof, two red and one golden. As soon as the danger of any frost is past then they will be moved to a sheltered position on the back wall of the house. Hopefully they will crop as heavily as last year. Also in the greenhouse is a canvas potato sack planted up with four tubers. Any container will do, a very large pot, half a barrel, even an old compost bag with some holes punched in it. As they grow they are covered with compost until they reach the top of the container. Any compost will do, I use homemade mixed with recycled growbag compost from last year. Kept watered we should get an early crop well before the ones from the allotment. With all the rain that we have had it was not surprising that some of our pots had become a bit waterlogged. The answer was to make sure that they were standing off the ground on little feet, and in some cases it was necessary to drill up from the bottom with an electric drill and a masonry bit. This was difficult to do but it was worth it to see the water trickling out. This drastic action possibly saved losing some of the plants. Come the summer we will probably need saucers under the self same pots to keep them watered. A recent survey in the 'Which' magazine found that pelleted controlled release fertilisers are just as effective as liquid feeds and are far easier to use as they only need to be applied once per season. This may well be true, but as containers such as hanging baskets have to be watered very regularly it is surely not much of a chore to mix in some soluble feed every ten days or so. So far this year we have not seen many slugs, snails and other pests. This is possibly due to the many active birds constantly going up and down foraging amongst the shrubs etc on a very regular basis. We have bluetits, sparrows, blackbirds etc all attracted to the garden by food and water. That's all for this time, Dave

St Mary’s C of E Primary School Believe Inspire Achieve!

St Mary’s Church of England Primary School is a vibrant, Christian school, in which all children achieve well and are inspired to a lifelong love of learning!

SIAMS Inspection February 2017

OUTSTANDING! “The excellent pastoral care and concern for individuals meets the pupils and their families at their point of need within an inclusive Christian family environment.”

“One of the ways in which St Mary’s stands out is its Christian commitment to providing exemplary pastoral care and concern for every individual within this inclusive family community…”

“Every child is expected to do well, underpinned by the belief that all children can achieve.”

“Christian values…are explicitly taught and rewarded, resulting in excellent relationships and behaviour.”

East Anglian Garden Group On 7th April about 80 members enjoyed Harriet Rycroft’s inspirational talk on Summer Splendour, Planting Exciting Container Displays. Harriet was Head Gardener at the famous Whichford Pottery and was responsible for designing and maintaining thousands of pots, including the spectacular displays for Chelsea. She uses different sized planters, placed at different heights where necessary, to create the impression of an established garden, and a huge selection of plants, some grown on wigwams, with an interesting variety of foliage, texture and colour. Dark flowers should be grown against pale foliage to stop them disappearing, and the usual rules of right plant- right place, apply, as well as taking into account the effect of light during different times of the day. She always uses slow release fertiliser when planting up, and doesn’t approve of crocks in the base of the pot, as it allows space for slugs and ants to move in. She recommended the use of Sylvagrow - all purpose peat free compost, and finished by planting up a container, with succulents, using broken pots for support and decoration, nothing is wasted in her garden! We have now finished our series of Spring lectures and will be meeting again on the 6th October for Stephen Barstow, and his talk ‘Around the World In 80 Plants’. This will be in our new home at Chamberlin Hall in Bildeston, which we are all very pleased with! We are now beginning the summer visits with the first outing to the Stody Gardens, in Holt, on May 16th. This is in conjunction with The Suffolk Gardens Trust, and this will be by coach. We will be seeing the stunning Rhododendrons, and the famed Azalea Water Gardens, with over 2000 mature specimens. Details of the visit will be found on our website. In the meantime, we are all hoping for a change in the weather so that we can get into the garden again. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Readers, I write my blog some time in advance of publication. (O the trials of being an author!) This explains some unseasonal news: Easter will have faded from your minds long ago but I still need to mention it here. The Tuesday morning group of volunteers raised £575 for The Shelley Centre with their Easter Egg raffle. The winning ticket for the grand prize was sold by Tuesday volunteer Margaret to a lady called Carol at Ringshall Village Hall Bingo club. I feel very happy that the Bingo club member supported us in this way, perhaps she will pay us a visit soon? Many other Easter eggs were won (1 per sheet of tickets sold) so thanks to all our families, riders, fellow volunteers and Bingo clubs for their support. Particular thanks go to Linden Lady Chocolatiers for so very kindly donating the giant first prize egg. Just to show how important is the work we horses and ponies do, look at little Alexia having her ride on Squidgey. She enjoys it so much that the lesson’s end leaves her in floods of tears. She would like to ride for longer but building up her core strength takes time; be patient Alexia because Squidgey loves being your physiotherapist and she tells me you are doing so well! The wettest Spring in my memory has not stopped the activities here. I got moved over in my room so the floor could be excavated and the hole tanked with concrete; then clever Tom Lowe fashioned wooden flooring to support my mounting ramp. I was moved back before the start of the ‘Summer’ term, somewhat diminished in height, but still in good working order. It is strange being lower down but I shall get used to it. Feedback from my riders is great, which is the most important thing. Thank you to the MCF for funding this improvement, and a big thank you to Margaret who conceived the solution. She held my hand whilst the workmen were here, unlocking and locking up, being kind to the builders, and giving up much of her Easter holiday to make this happen. (Hadleigh North Ward) Introduction It would be an understatement to say that the last year has been a turbulent time for Babergh District Council. Since the last Annual Meeting, 6 Conservative District Councillors have formed an Independent Conservative Group. All are loyal to the principles and policies of a Conservative administration, but a number of have deep concerns about the way business is being conducted by the current Babergh Conservative leader(s). Speaking personally, I am concerned about the move to Ipswich (we still don’t have any information on costs/benefits); the decision to press for merger with Mid Suffolk without proper consultation (this cost Cllr Jennie Jenkins her role as Leader); we have yet to see the business plan that would support merger. Most recently, a decision has been taken to put the whole thing on whole because of a decision by Colin Noble to explore a unitary option for Suffolk without any prior consultation with the District Councils. There is an on-going failure to communicate with Members and there is a clear need to think through options before ill-considered solutions reach a point of no return. Public Access As I reported in February, there are some moves to have a “public access” location provided in Hadleigh to meet with Council Officers. This was proposed at a recent Council meeting when a Motion was moved by a Member to demand this additional facility. I SUPPORTED THIS MOTION and again forced to vote with the Opposition. The Cabinet have rejected the rejection and I will put in a request to call in the Motion for further discussion. For this reason alone, it would be wrong to offer any assurances that it will succeed. However, I am still keen to see some form of public access support provided in Hadleigh and not reliant on unmanned computer terminal in the Guildhall Offices or expect Hadleigh Town Officers with limited time to facilitate this idea. Leisure The expenditure of £3.8 millions to replace the Hadleigh Leisure Centre Pool and to redevelop the Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury is proceeding apace. Tenders will be sent out shortly with target completion dates of Sept 19 for the Sudbury facility and Jan 20 for the Hadleigh Pool. Although I am disappointed no facilities for the disabled have been considered to the pool and this is something I have requested to be addressed. Public Sector Housing Babergh DC has recently agreed to fund the provision of additional council housing (27 new build units at Holbrook), but frustratingly, I am currently not able to provide any further detail in the case of Angel Court in Hadleigh. It is evident that work on this project will not start in the timeframe that was originally anticipated, and it could be 2021 before we see a result – from my perspective this is a highly undesirable delay and the residents of Hadleigh deserve a clear explanation why the project has been subject to such delay. Private Sector Housing The Sec of State (Javid) has issued new guidance to help facilitate the building of more private sector houses. As you know, we are now required to build 440 houses a year rather than the 335 that was already a serious challenge. The issue for Babergh DC has been seriously complicated by the absence of a 5-year land supply and I suspect that the introduction of new regulations will only slow/complicate the process. For what it’s worth, in the last year the Babergh Planning Committee approved 74% of the applications considered and a new issue of the draft new Local Plan is expected to go before the Cabinet this month with a further public consultation in the summer of 2018. Last time there were 13,960 comments submitted and I strongly recommend that you encourage individuals and Hadleigh Town Council to remain engaged in this important exercise. Merger of Babergh & MSDCs It gives me no pleasure to report that the expression “dogs breakfast” come to mind when updating the Babergh/MSmerger proposals. Initially the chief Executive and the Babergh DC Conservative Administration were pressing for an early decision on merger – which was not helped by additional pressure from Mid Suffolk to “get on with it”. As you know, a small group of Conservative Councillors including myself sided with the Opposition to prevent it happening without another referendum of Babergh voters, who had rejected the option 7 years ago by a 60% to 40% margin. A failure to listen to the concerns of Ward Members out in the field cost Cllr Jenkins her position as Leader of Babergh DC. The new Leader Cllr John Ward subsequently agreed to a referendum but the Motion that required a referendum also required that no public funds to be spent on the project Catch 22 … i.e. it’s not now possible to explore the merger option as it would require Officer time and money. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your view), the Leader of Suffolk CC (Colin Noble) has resolved that particular issue when he informed the Districts that he had contracted with an external agency to examine and report on a Unitary Council option for the whole of Suffolk. He did not consult with the Districts before initiating the study and the Leaders of both Babergh & Mid Suffolk called for the exercise to be stopped until the option had been discussed between Suffolk CC and the Districts. That call was rejected so any consideration of merger between Babergh & MS is now on the back burner for the foreseeable future as the Babergh/MS merger solution could become irrelevant if the Unitary option is adopted. These exercises are all about saving money.

Nedging and Naughton Football Club 50th Year Double Cup Winners Reunion

Back row standing left to right John Chaplin, Tom Legrice, John Peet, Jimmy Moyes, Denis Wright, Paul Smith, Roger Dykes, Gordon Vincent, Bill Gant Front row left to right Sam Crick, Bob Wignall, Alan Hambling, Alan Wignall, Alan Knock, Keith Dickerson Nedging and Naugthon F.C held a reunion at the Nedging Village Hall to celebrate 50 years since winning the Lavenham Cup and Brent Eleigh Cup. Alan Wignall who played for the club for twenty years and was also secretary at the time kept all his records and was able to contact all of the players involved and after much work was able to get a display, photographs, match reports, fixture cards and scorers lists relevant to that period. Sadly on the day three players were unable to attend, but all the others came and many with their wives and a good day of memories and laughs was had by all those present. A special mention of Dennis and Chris Wright who came along from South Wales to attend while most of the others remain fairly local to Nedging. A mention also to Paul Garrod of Lavenham British Legion who allowed Alan Wignall the loan of the cup for the occasion. Not forgetting also Cheryl of Chaplin Catering who as usual did splendidly well with the food, teas etc, and if you need something like this Cheryl is brilliant. Just for the record Nedging beat Woolpit 6-0 in 1967 in the Lavenham Cup with goals from Bolton 2, Wignall 2 and Wright and Crick. In the Brent Eleigh Cup in 1969 they beat Cockfield 4-0 with goals from Hambling, Wignall, Vincent and Dykes. This was a smashing day and all the old players were pleased to attend and meet up once again to share memories and laughs about old days, the funniest being Alan Wignall missing the same penalty no less than three times. Also pleased to say, all now in their seventies but still all well. Alan Wignall

Councillor Wiltshire requested again that SALC be contacted for advice on the interpretation of the wording. At this point the meeting was adjourned for members of the public to speak on the cemetery budget; the Town Council website; Town Council minutes; Neighbourhood Plan and the Annual Town Meeting Agenda POLICE The Clerk read the e.mail response from the Police advising that the crime mentioned at the February Town Council meeting was being investigated by CID at Landmark House in Ipswich who are carrying out extensive CCTV enquiries. in to the office during the week of the snow and I think we all should be thankful for such dedicated staff. Councillor Young asked if she could be advised whether an application has been made to the Public Works Loan Board? She was advised that the Town Clerk had submitted the application. Councillor Young then went on to raise her concerns about the insurance cover for the new cemetery extension and how many times she has asked if the insurance company have been contacted to confirm that they would cover the cemetery extension. Mr. Crimmin advised that all land owned by the Town Council is covered by public liability insurance. Councillor Young reiterated that her concern for many months is that there has been no consultation with the insurance company and the cemetery extension and the revised specification would not be covered. She asked can you confirm that you will contact the Council’s insurers. The Clerk answered Yes. Councillor Matthews asked that the location of a replacement seat for the war memorial be put on the next Environment & General Purposes Committee Agenda. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT Councillor Shearly-Sanders questioned the payment to Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity Occupational Fee as he felt that there was no legal arrangement in place to make this payment. He felt it could be a criminal matter and that whoever demanded this payment should be reported to the Police. Councillor Byrne reported that the advice from the Charity’s and Town Council’s solicitors has been to continue with the payment. Councillor Young proposed that this payment be excluded until after the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity Meeting on Thursday 22nd March. Questions were raised on the advice obtained from the solicitors and how this is shared which Councillor Sheldrick, as Chair of the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity, answered and advised that progress made will be reported at the Charity meeting on the 22nd March as, until the Feoffment has an understanding of the situation and had gathered enough information to bring to debate, there was not enough to bring to Town Council for discussion. Councillor Fraser requested that the accounts be authorised for payment and this payment be made in good faith and if subsequently it is found that the payment to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity was inappropriate then this can be transferred back? Councillor Cook moved the question be asked – this was approved – voting was unanimous. It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £22,514.98 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. Voting was: For Councillors: Angland, Byrne, Cook, Fraser, Haines, Haylock, Matthews, Sheldrick, and Whiting. Against Councillors Shearly-Sanders and Young. Abstention Councillor Wiltshire PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 8th March 2018 were noted. TOWN COUNCIL MEETINGS The Clerk reported that South Suffolk Leisure could provide a meeting room at a cost of £73 and it would need to be set up and cleared away. At the present time the Dining Room is costing £53.00 and this includes setting up and clearing away. It was agreed that all future meetings should be held at the Town Hall premises in order that the staff had access to any items which may be held in the office. MEDIATION The Clerk read the letter received from the Monitoring Officer offering to hold a workshop session with all the Councillors with herself and the Chief Executive Officer of Babergh District Council providing support. It was agreed to accept this offer and the Clerk was asked to work on organising the session. HOUSING NEEDS IN HADLEIGH Councillor Shearly-Sanders brought this item to the attention of the Council due to recent government changes and the impact this would have on the Neighbourhood Plan. It was felt that before considering any survey regarding housing needs the option of using the services of a consultant to take over the Neighbourhood Plan should be completed first. REPRESENTATIVES Councillor Byrne provided a verbal report following her attendance at the recent SALC meeting when changes to data protection were discussed. The next meeting will be on the 18th June. Councillor Haylock advised that the Wool Town Association would be holding a formal launch at Kentwell Hall. They would also be holding two events during the year, one on Suffolk Day and another in the Autumn. The Association is working with Babergh District Council and the Stour Valley Group on producing walking leaflets to take in all the Wool Towns. Councillor Haines gave a verbal report following her attendance at the Twinning Association Annual General Meeting. This year would be the 40th anniversary of the French visiting Hadleigh. The Mayor was thanked for joining the Association on their visit to France in 2017 and for the grant given. This year the French Association will be visiting Hadleigh on the weekend of the 18th May. The Clerk asked if Council would deal with a request from the Franey Rand and Pest House Charity that had been received after the Agenda had been issued. It was agreed that this would be brought to the Annual Town Council Meeting for the position of trustee to be filled. HADLEIGH TOWN FORUM Councillors were in receipt of the Town Forum Constitution. Unfortunately there were not enough Councillors available to fill

the positions required under this Constitution to continue the Town Forum and it was felt this should be divested from Hadleigh Town Council. It was felt that as there appeared to be local interest in putting on events for the town. Hadleigh Town Council could provide support dependent upon the event and the organisers could apply for a grant. Councillor Cook recommended that Town Events be put on the next Town Council Agenda as Mr. Ruddy, the newly elected Councillor, may like to be involved in this discussion as he was active in the town putting on events. Councillor Matthews suggested that this could be passed over to the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity as a source of raising income. TOWN MATTERS Councillor Cook reported on the Suffolk Parking Management Strategy consultation which contained various policies. A request was made that all Councillors look at this document before the next Town Council meeting in order that a response can be agreed. Councillor Sheldrick advised Councillors on a news item he had seen regarding the recycling of chewing gum. He asked if Hadleigh Town Council would support this initiative and agree to him contacting Babergh District Council, Suffolk County Council and local businesses with a view to the siting and possible sponsorship of some of the collection bins in the town. It was agreed that Councillor Sheldrick worked on this initiative. The Clerk had contacted the Company to obtain costings. There being no further business the meeting closed at 9.20pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) PSLCC CiLCA – Town Clerk Addendum: This is a draft report of the meeting. The Minutes will be approved at the Monthly Town Council Meeting held on the third Thursday of the following month. MATTERS ARISING There were no matters arising. At this point the meeting was adjourned for members of the public to speak on planning application DC/18/00647 40 George Street. TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee considered the applications for Planning Consent, details of which are listed below and upon which the following decisions were reached:DC/16/00364 83 High Street, application for Listed Building Consent. Repair fire place, remove cracked lime mortar from fire place, approx. 1-2cm deep; use lime mortar to repoint fire place, Approval was recommended (Voting was 11 for and 1 abstention) DC/18/00387 Hadleigh Bee Farm, Pond Hall Road, Erection of two storey front and side extension, Approval was recommended (Voting was 11 for and 1 abstention) DC/18/005112 11 Ramsey Road, Erection of garage extension following demolition of existing garage, Approval was recommended (Voting was 10 for and 2 abstentions) DC/18/00541 4 Tenter Close, Erection of a single storey rear extension, Approval was recommended (Voting was 10 for and 2 abstentions) DC/18/00564 Willow View, 8 Castle Road, Erection of a single storey rear extension, first floor loft conversion, construction of new roof and external recladding. DC/18/00624 Hadleigh Showground, Holbecks Park, Creation of new vehicular access and hogging track, Approval was recommended (Voting was 10 for and 2 abstentions). The Committee supported the comment made that the access on Coram Street should be gated but access for pedestrians and cyclists should be made available. DC/18/00636 5 Station Road Outline Planning Application (Access to be considered) – Erection 1 no. dwelling, formation of parking and turning area

and improved vehicular access. Approval was recommended (Voting was 8 for and 4 abstentions) DC/18/00647 40 George Street, Erection of 1no. detached one and a half storey dwelling and creation of new vehicular access. Refusal was recommended (Voting was 11 for and 1 abstention). The reason for refusal was that the dwelling was harmful to the site of a listed building and is in the conservation area. Also the access to the site is uncertain. DC/18/00674 Red House, Pound Lane, Erection of single storey garden studio, boundary wall, lobby and covered walkway, Approval was recommended (Voting was 10 for and 2 abstentions). Could the choice of brick and slate match the surrounding area. DC/18/00675 60 Benton Street, Erection of two storey rear extension, Approval was recommended (Voting was 7 for and 5 abstentions) DC/18/00818 60 Aldham Road, Erection of rear conservatory, Approval was recommended (Voting was 10 for and 2 abstentions) Additional Applications: DC/17/04239 Land adjoining Hadleigh Hall, Pound Lane, Erection of detached, two and a half storey dwelling with detached cart lodge and storage building, construction of access and parking area and associated landscaping. Refusal was recommended (Voting was 10 for and 2 abstentions). This application was refused by Hadleigh Town Council on the 15th September 2017 because of the height of the dwelling and the impact on the surrounding listed buildings and this remained unchanged. The scale of the building is unsuitable for the site. The Committee wished to commend the comments made in the Babergh District Council heritage team report and also by Historic England. DC/18/00769 2 Gaell Crescent, Erection of porch and single storey side extension (to replace existing conservatory) Approval was recommended (Voting was 10 for and 2 abstentions) DC/18/00966 40 George Street, Notification of works to Trees in a Conservation Area – T1 (Scots Pine) – Fell. This application was noted. As the Committee had received two conflicting comments on the state of the tree a request was made for the health of the tree to be confirmed prior to any work being carried out. TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee noted the Schedule of Decisions of the Local Planning Authority. ANY OTHER BUSINESS Councillor Shearly-Sanders put forward two other planning consultants who may be interested in working on the Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan – Navigus Planning and Rachael Homes who had worked on the Lavenham Plan. He updated members on recent changes made by government and the production of Babergh District Council’s Local Plan which would affect future work on a Neighbourhood Plan. He felt that it would be beneficial to the Council to hold a re-launch public meeting. Councillor Haines along with Councillors Angland and Cook had attended a Babergh District Council CiL workshop and provided a brief update. The Clerk was asked to provide all Councillors with the full presentation and documentation. The Chair asked Councillors to put their thinking caps on and provide projects in the town where this money can be spent so that a list of projects can be held in the office. Councillor Young raised the seat that had been damaged by the War Memorial but was advised that this must be discussed by the Environment & General Purposes Committee. The Clerk was requested to put this on the next Agenda. The meeting closed at 9.08pm. Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) PSLCC CiLCA – Town Clerk

Layham Parish Council • Babergh District Council With regard to the boundary review, the Boundary Commission had released updated recommendations and was now inviting further comment. Cllr Ward said there had been no changes to the recommendations affecting Layham. Cllr Laing said he had met some people outside Babergh’s old offices in Corks Lane who were unaware that BDC had moved. In response to his comment that a list of visitors should continue to be kept, and that it seemed more people made personal visits to the council offices than actually recorded, Cllr Ward said he would raise this with Babergh’s CEO. In response to a further question from SL, JW said the cost of security for the Corks Lane site was less than £120,000 per annum, but it was likely that the security team would be gone within the year. With regard to the proposed merger with Mid Suffolk, JW said there would be another referendum given the strength of feeling amongst councillors. The Secretary of State wanted to see a general level of support for the merger within the district, then the Cabinet would make the final decision. In response to a question from SL, JW said the Secretary of State appeared to be supportive of the merger. The Chairman congratulated Babergh on taking silver awards in both the Working Together and Council of the Year categories of the 2018 Public Sector Transformation Awards. • Suffolk County Council Cllr Jones said there was concern at Westminster that some local authorities were in a challenging financial position – for example, Northamptonshire had declared bankruptcy. Many councils were considering moving from a 2-tier system to a unitary authority, as these were less costly to run than a 2-tier system. With regard to Children’s Services, the LGA was currently looking at costs in different counties, which ranged from £585 to £1085 per child, with some of the worst performing councils appearing to be the most costly. Suffolk was in the bottom quartile of costs per child, and the top quartile for being judged ‘good’. Suffolk CC would be holding a public consultation over the future of the Record Office Service in Lowestoft and the results would be presented to Cabinet later in the year. A paper would be going to Cabinet in early April regarding the extension of AONBs and Coasts & Heaths. Commonwealth Day had been celebrated on 12 March and plans were being drawn up to mark the centenary of the end of WW1 later in the year. Cllr Jones would report the work done during the spring clean on the pavement between Upper Layham and Hadleigh. Cllr Jones said he would be willing to make a grant from his Locality Budget towards the purchase of a defibrillator for Brett Green. • Green Team The annual spring clean had been well supported and it was agreed to hold another litter pick in the autumn. • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) The Clerk said the DPO Centre had reduced its fees for acting as Data Protection Officer for parish councils (neither councillors nor the clerk were allowed to take on this role). In addition, parish councils could now choose which category they wished to be in, according to the level of support they required. It was agreed to appoint the DPO Centre as DPO for Layham Parish Council. • Signage The Clerk would contact Suffolk Highways to discuss the possibility of a sign at the top of Mill Lane indicating ‘no access to Lower Layham and Hadleigh’. • Benton Street safety questionnaire The Clerk had received a letter from a resident suggesting that residents of Upper Layham should be included in the survey being carried out, as they also required regular access to and from Hadleigh. It was agreed that she should write to Cllr Mick Fraser asking that the people affected (approximately 170) should be invited to participate in the survey. Village Spring Clean Part 2 Apologies to those volunteers who helped on the Village Spring Clean but who were not acknowledged in last month’s Letter from Layham. We had a ‘signingin’ and briefing procedure on the playing field but some of our helpers put time in before the day or joined in after the event had started. So – thanks to Geoff Dowie, Alan Hughes, Ann and Les Mayhew, Dusty Miller, Mary Pain and Daphne Parsons. That brings the number helping almost to 50. Well done everyone! A couple of stalwarts have accepted personal challenges and got on with voluntary work since the day – John Nightingale has been beavering on the grass edging on Brett Green and John Byham has cleared the central grass growth along the full length of Water Lane (several dog walkers will be very grateful). A big thank you to both of them. 42

Running alongside the Plant Sale will be the exhibition advertised below – the two events will make a very pleasant afternoon out

Layham History Revealed Members of the Layham Local History Group are displaying historical information about the parish in the Village Hall between 1pm and 4pm on Sunday 20 May 2018. This is to coincide with the Plant Salein the churchyard – giving visitors an opportunity to attend both events. Displays include The Mill; The School; 1851 Census; The Rectory; Men who came home safely from WW1; Metal Detecting Finds. Entry £1.

Playing Field Annual Meeting We meet annually to take stock and welcome anyone who would like to help with the management of the field. If you use the field as a dog walker or a parent you will be aware of little changes that take place from month to month – be it, for example, hedge cutting, grass cutting, maintaining apparatus or clearing molehills! Please consider getting involved. Come along to the Village Hall 7.30 on Wednesday 16 May. We look forward to seeing you. Village Hall This year is the 90th Anniversary of the Village Hall (originally built in 1928) so watch this space for notice of a summertime celebration! Meanwhile, renovation plans are in discussion for the toilet block and entrance as the committee seeks to modernize this area. Layham Village Hall is now an official member of Community Action Suffolk an organization which supports community action and helps local projects thrive. Unfortunately, there was a recent incident at the hall involving young people and alcohol - a number of things were damaged with rubbish and mess left around the building. Many thanks to all those who helped with the huge clean-up effort. Unsupervised teenage party bookings are currently suspended. The Layham Village Hall Management Committee AGM is due to be held on Wednesday 9th May at 7.30pm. Anyone welcome. Bookings of the hall are made through Richard Groom on 01473 822220. Hall hire fee is £7 an hour. Cpr Training We have three defibrillators up and running in the village and a fourth shortly to be provided in Brett Green. These represent quite an investment, and should they ever be called upon, the best chance of success is if CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is used on the patient whilst the defibrillator is being fetched. We have given introductory sessions to about two dozen people so far, and sessions can be arranged wherever there is interest. Talk to your neighbours and try to make up a group – maximum 6 to 8 - and contact the Parish Clerk, Jane Cryer on 07920 713940. A trainer and a location will then be arranged. Remember – it might be you – then you will be grateful if your neighbour knows what to do.

Dear Sir, Traditional Easter egg hunts are aimed primarily at children but since children come in all sizes and ages I think the community should give a rousing cheer to the folks at Hadleigh Co-op store for providing their own daily, interesting version for grown-ups as well as kiddies. This involves hunt the bacon, find the pies, spot the cheese and where's the fish. To add further adventures for us they have kindly installed IQ teasing cold cabinets some of which have sliding doors whereas others have hinged versions. Oh what japes as we battle through our fellow confused players all going back and forth with happy, smiling faces. Then, the final ultimate part of the game. Find a checkout that is manned.! (clue....look for the queue) In these days of decline of High Street shopping it is wonderful to see that the Co-op is going the extra mile to provide this endless entertainment. Wouldn't it be totally boring to go back to those days when everything was nicely displayed and everyone knew where to find the tea bags.........thank you a thousand times. Dennis Baulk

Dear Sir, Jane Haylock suggests that the Town Council’s payment of substantial sums for facilities used only by a minority of the population (the swimming pool and sports grounds) is a justification for subsidising a faciity used by even fewer people: The Guildhall. What the town needs, she believes, is a large sculpture of a sheep. Woolly Thinking? K. Manders

Dear Sir, I was surprised, but delighted to learn that a meeting had taken place on 8th February 2018, to discuss the proposals for a new swimming pool which will be built near our present facility. I promptly found application BCa/17/51 so that I could read in more detail about the plans. Very soon, my delight turned to dismay. At the very bottom of the document, one can see the dimensions of the new pool, including the proposed depth. The proposal is for a new pool which is only 1 meter deep throughout! This, to me, seems more like a glorified paddling pool! Hadleigh has a strong tradition of producing competent swimmers and the pool is used by many schools. Admittedly, with a pool of one meter depth, children would still be able to swim the required 25 meters expected by the end of primary school, but what about the fact that children need to learn to survive in deeper water? How will they be able to pass their survival certificate, if they are never out of their depth? In a coastal area, surely it is essential that all children have experienced the sensation of not being able to touch the bottom, or are we assuming that our children will never swim in a lake or the sea? Regarding the general public, most people would surely prefer to swim in a 'proper pool' rather than a public version of a school pool! How will competitions take place if competitors can only shallow dive? I for one, would much prefer to see the present pool refurbished if the only other option was to have a pool that will barely cover my waist. Having researched a number of new pools which have been, or are being built across the country, I have found that none of them are so shallow - all have a deep end - and a number have a moveable floor to accommodate the occasions when a single depth, shallow pool is required. Surely, as a growing town with a need for better leisure facilities rather than worse, Hadleigh deserves to have a 'proper' new pool which will address everyone's needs, rather than merely accepting a cheap and inferior option? Dear Sir, I would like to draw attention to all residents and businesses of Hadleigh of events l have come across in recent months in the town and which is something that we should all be very concerned about. Recently I have found items that are evidence of drug misuse in the children’s play area in Corks Lane, Riverside Walk and Constitution Hill. These items were reported and handed to the police in Hadleigh. One recent week day evening I witnessed several youths in the porch of St Mary’s church. I could smell they were smoking cannabis and were shouting with little regard for the noise they were making. Later that evening I went back to the porch; the youths had gone but it was obvious from what they had left behind that they had been smoking cannabis. On another occasion I saw a youth aged around sixteen, staggering along the High Street at 6pm. As he passed me he stunk of cannabis. On this occasion I tried to report it to the police but could not do so due to the length of time it took for them to take the call. I have been advised by the police in Hadleigh that there is a problem in the town with a small group of youths misusing drugs. As a result of these concerns, I attended for the first time a regular meeting for the public with the Hadleigh Police team. In respect of the above problems and probably many other issues, you would have thought that would be precisely when they would be working. Also for the first time I took the time to look at the Suffolk Police website and while looking at their data for Stop and Search I was equally surprised to see that not a single Stop and Search had been made in the area for drugs or in fact any other offence since September 2017. I would urge all residents and businesses to report any incidents or concerns they have regarding this particular problem, even if it means waiting on the phone for a lengthy period of time as has happened to me. I would also urge all residents to attend the important meeting held in June when the Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable for Suffolk will be present. I believe there are many questions they need to answer. Finally I must add that I have nothing but respect for the difficult job that the police officers in this country perform. V. Tott

Dear Sir, As a keen cyclist and road user I was delighted to see that workmen had finally arrived to repair the multitude of potholes at the end of Edwin Panks Roads at the junction opposite the High School. My delight soon turned to despair when the following day I drove past and saw that rather than repair the many alloy cracking and cyclist nightmare potholes they had repaired just one. How much does it cost the council to employ someone to repair these holes and are they going to waste council payers money by repeatedly sending crews out rather than do the obvious and repair them all at the same time? Perhaps someone from the council can provide a reasonable answer to this as I fail to see any logic in repairing one hole at a time! Robert Giles

Messing about on the Water Are you ready for the annual splashdown of The Hadleigh Duck & Raft Race? This major community event in the Town's diary, on Sunday 3rd June and organised by Hadleigh Scout Group, is now entering its 11th year - getting bigger and wetter every time. The Raft racing starts at around 10.00am, culminating in the final splash-off at around 12.30. In the midst of this fun, the flotilla of multiple plastic ducks sets off over the weir battling for a place across the finish line. The Party afterwards, as per tradition, is at The George. The ducks are all in training under the guidance of Spirit Fitness who are regulars at the Scout HQ (Not real ones, plastic ones btw) and previous champions of the rafting side of the celebrations are talking the talk of this year being a classic. If you have already been, you'll need no persuasion remember 10am start at Toppesfield Bridge. If you haven't been, bring your family to one of Hadleigh's highlights. What better way to spend a Sunday in June? If you want to buy a duck - talk to a Scout or pop into the George. Hopefully a few will be left to buy on the day. If you feel the urge to enter a raft team ring the Race Secretary on 07545 545744 Duck tickets now available to buy from Avis newsagents, don’t miss out get them while you can!

Holding back the Enemy In this article we remember: James William Pryke 5 May 1918 Frederick John Green 6 May 1918 William Salisbury Cooper 14 May 1918 Walter J Robinson 23 May 1918 Robert George Ward 26 May 1918 The scale of fighting on the Western Front in the spring of 1918 exceeded anything that had gone before. From 21 March and through April the British Army suffered 236,000 casualties and conceded miles of hard fought ground to the advancing Germans. However, the German tactical advantage was limited and the salients they created were vulnerable. New drafts of men were being dispatched to the Front, many young and inexperienced new recruits plus six new American divisions had joined the fight. Of interest to the people of Hadleigh, was that the dismounted Suffolk Yeomanry, now the 15 Suffolks were on their way from Palestine. During May 1918 five men with Hadleigh connections lost their lives in the mayhem that followed the German’s spring offensive and all have known graves on the battlefields of the Western Front in northern France. The first was Private James William Pryke who was born on Christmas Day 1889, lived most of his life at 54 Angel Street and went to school in Bridge Street. In 1911 he was working as a matt weaver. In October 1916 he was conscripted into the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. Early in 1918 he was transferred to 1/5 Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, this was a pioneer battalion involved in providing labour to relieve the infantry from some of the non combatant duties. In April the battalion was involved in facing the German offensives close to the La Bassée Canal in northern France, although James Pryke spent most the month sick in hospital. He eventually died of pneumonia and was buried at the Aire Communal Cemetery 20 miles north west of La Bassée. Private Frederick John Green of Old House Farm, Hintlesham appears to have enlisted with the Suffolk Regiment at the end of 1915 and was placed in reserve under the Lord Derby Scheme awaiting mobilisation. The following March he married Hadleigh girl Agatha Madelene Ramplin and came to live in the town. In May 1916 he was mobilised with the South Staffordshire Regiment. March 1918 found him with the 2nd Battalion on the Hindenburg line south east of Arras and by the end of the month they had been driven back almost 40 miles by the Germans to an area north of Albert. The battalion held their position and at Boisleux au Mont on 6 May the war diary records “Normal Trench warfare. Artillery very active during night. Rained hard all night.” It was on this day that Frederick Green lost his life and was buried close by at Bac-Du-Sud British Cemetery Bailleulval. He is remembered on both the Hadleigh and Hintlesham War memorials.

GREAT WAR NEWS MAY 1918 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)

Wed 1 May Private Philip Emmerson Army Service Corps writes:- “I wish I could tell you what I have seen during the last few weeks, as it would cheer you all up. I do not wonder the Germans are in a hurry, for they know what they will have against them in a month or two. You need not worry, for we shall soon get some good news, and it will, I hope, finish the war.” Wed 8 May Here is an appreciative letter of services our townsman, Lance Corporal Herbert Kirk, has rendered to comrades, sent to his 12 year old son by an Australian soldier. Dear Leonard, you will be surprised to receive a letter from me. I was wounded in the front line and after passing through several dressing stations, I was put in Ward H1 where I came in contact with your dad. In the ward he does all he possibly can for the comfort of others. He has been confined to bed for the last two days. He talks well of you and told me to ask after the dog named Nancy. Well lad make the most of your time at school, study hard. From Charlie Bottomley, an Australian friend. (Herbert Kirk died of heart disease and pneumonia in 1920 and is buried under a CWGC stone in Hadleigh cemetery). Wed 15 May 2 Air Mechanic 2nd Class Arthur Moss Allen Royal Flying Corps has arrived home in response to a cablegram sent him owing to the critical condition of his father. He travelled from France to England in an aeroplane and the journey only occupied 40 minutes. The machine came across at a height of between 2,600 and 2,700 feet and passed through a thick fog bank.

The 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards had been at the heart of the action in 1918; from raiding German trenches in February, to facing the enemy at Boisleux-au-Mont as the offensive pivoted south of Arras in late March and in April they were bussed north to defend Hazebrouck during the Lys Offensive. Hadleigh-born Sergeant William Salisbury Cooper served with the 4th Grenadier Guards and died in May when the Guards were defending Hazebrouck. He was buried at Aire Communal Cemetery. William Cooper’s mother, Emily Mary Heard, was from Hadleigh and in 1891 the family were living in Queen Street. At the age of 15 William was a boy trainee at HMS Ganges and remained with the Royal Navy at least until 1913. In September 1914 he enlisted with the Grenadier Guards and had distinguished service being awarded both the Military Medal and the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He is remembered on the St Albans War Memorial. Private Walter J Robinson was born in Hadleigh in 1894, living first in Calais Street and later Bridge Street where he went to school. In 1911 he was a butcher’s assistant and on 1 September 1914 he enlisted with the 5th Suffolk territorial regiment. He was at Gallipoil during the latter part of 1915, but in December was invalided home suffering from enteric fever. He spend more than six months in hospital and was eventually declared fit for overseas service again in September 1917. He was transferred to the 11th Royal Scots who were then in the Ypres Salient and at Passchendaele. He appears latterly to have been attached to a Royal Army Medical Corps field ambulance and may have then succumbed to his earlier illness. In May 1918 he was in hospital at St Omer when a bomb fell and there he died. Among normal processions like wallet, pipe and photos that were returned to his father in Hadleigh in July, there was also a horse shoe. Lance Corporal Robert George Ward was born in 1890, lived at Gallows Hill and schooled in Bridge Street. He was keen to be a soldier and enlisted into the Grenadier Guards in 1908 while underage. He arrived in France with the 2nd battalion only a few days after hostilities began; he was awarded the 1914 star and could claim to be an Old Contemptible. Robert Ward was injured in the leg in September 1915 at the Battle of Loos and invalided home. He returned to the Western Front in August 1916 and was later awarded the Military Medal. On 26 May 1918 the front line was close to Ayette in northern France and they were moving forward following a creeping barrage which was meant to afford them some cover. Unfortunately the guns were dropping short and men were being killed, it is believed that one of those men was Robert Ward. He is buried at Ayette British cemetery just south of Arras. If you have information that would expand our knowledge of Hadleigh men who fell in the Great War, then Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project would be pleased to hear from you. Suffolk Bereavement Support – The devastation of guilt is something that can be overcome A frequent topic that arises during discussions in our groups is the guilt that the bereaved may experience however devoted and dedicated they have been to the person they have lost. Guilt can raise its ugly head in all sorts of situations. Whether a loss has been sudden or after a long illness, whether the person who has died has reached a ripe old age or passed away prematurely doesn’t seem to affect the intensity of this feeling. Similarly, whatever the relationship of the bereaved person to their loved one be it friend, spouse or partner, child or parent guilt can be an issue that can overwhelm and paralyse those who are left, catapulting them into a state of continuous nagging pain. How can we help? In our discussions we provide an outlet for expressing feelings including guilt which might other wise become toxic and affect our mental and physical health. We also help our members recognise and understand that much of the guilt experienced is based on how we think we should behave and can be quite judgemental and self-punishing. Our reactions can also be laden with overly high expectations which do not take into account the emotional and distressful situation we may have been in at the time. If this blog finds you caught up with guilt in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? We are here to help! Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join us at any time. What would you do? If an earthquake wrecked your house or a hurricane blew it away what would you do? Perhaps you have insurance to cover it or money in the bank to pay for repairs. In Haiti many people are very poor and build their own houses with what they can find. When the earthquake happened Christian Aid. working with local partners, built 700 homes to replace some of those lost. When the hurricane came some years later these houses survived. Now Christian Aid is planning to train people and give them the know how to build safe houses themselves. In Christian Aid Week you can support this work. Come to URC church 6th May at 6.30 pm where we welcome a visiting speaker who will tell you more. If a collector drops an envelope through your door please do contribute. Come for a Soup and Cake lunch at the Ansell centre on Friday 11th May at 12.0 midday or enjoy a Big Breakfast and cake stall at St Mary’s on Friday 18th from 10am or support our collectors at the Coop on 12thMay. Coffee Morning for Bladder Scanner Appeal The day of the coffee morning dawned clear and bright. Temperatures were the highest for an April day since 1949. Tables were set up and cakes were displayed. All we needed were customers to sit and have a cuppa and a piece of cake. Well, we need not have worried because they came in their droves. At one point it was standing room only! The magnificent total of £388 was raised towards the bladder scanner appeal. It exceeded our wildest expectations, and we were very humbled by the support of everybody. A big thank you to all those who donated cakes and draw prizes, and of course those who came to sample the goodies. Thanks must also go to the Elmsett Methodist Church for allowing us to use their hall, to the East of England Coop who sponsored us, to Morrisons who donated some prizes and to Wheaten Mill for donating some of their delicious cakes. All of this could not have taken place without the help of Margaret Leek, Alison Gillies, Chris Howe and Alan, who worked tirelessly during the morning to ensure that everything ran smoothly. We now have about £1300 towards the scanner, so we are more than half way there, with still another month to go before the zipwire takes place. If anyone else would like to make a donation, it can be done through justgiving.com or by paying me directly. From the bottom of my heart a huge thank you for your generosity, Jenny Skippen

Free Taster Day for Ladies at Newton Green Newton Green will be one of the golf clubs across Suffolk promoting a special free taster day aimed at bringing ladies of all ages into the activity. Promoted via the Suffolk Ladies’ County Golf Association, the day is aimed at offering fresh air, friendship, fitness and fun. More than a dozen clubs across the county are taking part in the event on Wednesday, May 16, with sessions throughout the day and early evening to give both working and non-working ladies the chance to attend. The tasting experience will include meeting and greeting by playing members, and receiving basic tips from the club’s professional staff. Every participant will have the chance of playing at least one hole, whether it be on the club’s short course or at least one of the main holes. All equipment will be provided. Once players have had a chance to try their hands at swinging a club and being assessed for their skills, they will take refreshments with members able to offer guidance and support on their journey into golf. After taking part in a session, participants will be offered exclusive coaching and other packages to help get them started in the sport. Lizzie Johnson, women’s captain, commented: “Our ladies’ section has been exceptionally successful in recent years. We have managed to achieve this with an inclusive and happy atmosphere across the whole section.“At the same time, we welcome the involvement of Suffolk so we can move forward in tandem to bring even more ladies of all ages into the sport.” Sessions will commence at 10.30 am, 1.30 pm and 6.30 pm, and bookings should be made through the professional’s shop on 01787 313215

Hadleigh Walkers A Scotsman whose first taste of golf was in the Outer Hebredes has driven off his season as men’s captain at Newton Green. Glaswegian-born Ian, a former hockey player at county and Army level, was completing his career in the services on the island of Benbecula at the age of 39, when he tried a few holes of golf on the island’s Askernish nine-hole course. From then on golf overtook his love of hockey and he has never stopped playing, while pursuing a career as a technical engineer in the auto industry, from which he retired three years ago.

A complete change of venue for May’s walk on Saturday 12th. We tried this route West of Lavenham last year in rather foul weather and had virtually no takers. This is a very pleasant walk and takes in an area where we don’t usually walk – so we’re trying again. We will meet at the car park next to the Cock Horse pub opposite Lavenham church at 0930. The walk will is about 9 miles and takes in Balsdon Hall Farm, Alder Carr, Bridge Street, Alpheton, Clapstile Farm and then the St Edmunds Way finishing up at Lavenham Church in time for a beverage at the pub at around 1300. If anyone is in need of a lift to Lavenham please email us and we will do our best to help. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Hadleigh Art Club Programme for May It is suggested that we should examine and draw insects and butterflies on the 1st of May. Bring in references to work from unless you have a tame earwig that will sit still and put up with close scrutiny. On the 8th of May we turn our attention to horses, standing, grazing or the flowing movement of them galloping. Need I say references needed here. (My old friend Sid Matthews used to say “an artist is as good as his references”) on the 15th May we have engaged local artist Paul Vousden to demonstrate to the club the art of painting in acrylics. Not many of our members use acrylics so that may set us off on a fresh journey. Members may bring friends along to this session. The following week we are set the task of painting a sunset, possibly building on what we learned last week. With Summer on the horizon let us spend the last meeting of May painting a Summer Garden. New members as always are welcome Follow us on facebook. www.facebook.com/pg/Hadleigh-Art-Club-303673523336322

Together Tuesday’s Easter Cream Tea Event A very enjoyable afternoon was had with over 50 people attending Together Tuesdays Easter Cream Tea Event .Alongside the scrummy scones with all the trimmings attendees were entertained with live music in the form of a Ukulele and a good old sing along with many old time favourite hits being sung. HDAA’s Activities Facilitator Jill Mason who co-ordinates Together Tuesday said “We had a very enjoyable afternoon and it is really lovely to see how well attended our community events are as it is a chance for the community to join together whilst raising the profile of Dementia to the wider community”. Bildeston Waytes make Donation to HDAA The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance would like to send our heartfelt thanks to the Bildeston Waytes who have just sent the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance a wonderful donation of £450.00. This was a huge surprise and gratefully received. The HDAA is working hard to raise funds to employ our community activities facilitator that is supporting community groups to set up and run dementia friendly activities across our community. The money was raised at the Christmas Carol Concert, which I am told was lots of fun. A big thank you sincerely. Working together, we will become a dementia friendly community, and with wonderful people like the Bildeston Waytes the work of the Alliance will go on. If you would like to know more about becoming a dementia friend or get involved with Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, you can email us now at hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk.

Great Wall Marathon for Support Autism Kim Hickie & Natalija Dolgova from David Lloyd gym in Ipswich are off to China in May to run the Great Wall Marathon For Support Autism. It‘s one of the worlds most challenging marathons at 26.2miles and 5,164 steps in total, which they are funding themselves to raise as much money from sponsorship for Support Autism. Support Autism is a new charity set up in East Anglia, which provides support and advice to those who are living with Autism and other conditions in their lives or are on the road to diagnosis. They offer relaxed monthly support groups, a facebook group and over the telephone support Free of charge. Support Autism also offers early intervention, group therapy, lunch groups, 1-2-1 counselling, family counselling and support and much more, which is a chargable service. It is their vision to be able to raise money to be able to offer these services for free to those in need of them and continue to run their support groups, internet and telephone advice services free of charge. We are also raising money to equip our therapy room with all the necessary toys, crafts and furniture to make our therapy room as inviting as possible. Kim’s Story.... My son has high functioning Autism and we wanted to support our local community & raise awareness. Not just for Autism but awareness to the impact our society has on high functioning teenagers and young adults ... As we all know through the media there has been a rise in drug and gang culture in our society. Through my own experience, I have found that teenagers / young adults with high functioning autism can be vulnerable and easily lead when it comes to gang culture. Gangs can take advantage of this and coerce them into undesirable behaviour such as stealing or carrying drugs. However, if we nurture and educate our young people, by giving them a safe space and someone they can trust, they can then explore their world and discuss their issues. Thus, hopefully empowering them to take the right course. So in a nutshell we wanted to do something different! A challenge to be remembered! China‘s Great Wall Marathon completely fits the bill!!!! If you feel you can donate please head over to our just giving crowdfunding page search for - Kim and Natalija support Autism. If you need a chat or some support please get in touch with Support Autism or come along to one of our groups. We are on Facebook and Instagram or email us at support@supportautism.info or call us at 01473-290276 (ext 3)

Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club On Saturday 3rd March we hosted a latin dance night in Capel St Mary. Over 30 people arrived ready to learn how to wiggle their hips in time with the music and Bruce Lait managed to teach us all some basic salsa and cha cha cha steps. Thanks to Bruce and everyone who attended, the money raised has been used to buy a foam training wedge. Our Easter camp was well attended with 45 gymnasts spending the morning learning new skills, playing games and generally having fun! Look out for more training camps in the Summer holidays. Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club has been running for almost 5 years and we are currently looking to develop the club by finding a full-time facility. Ideally, we would like a long-term lease on an industrial unit (5000-8000sqft approximately), but would consider other options. Please contact us if you feel able to help with our search. We offer classes for children aged 3+ on Thursday evenings at East Bergholt High School and Friday evenings and Saturday mornings at Hadleigh High School. For more information about Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club please look on our website www.hadleighstarsgymnastics.co.uk or contact Kelly Mires on 07760 314060.

News from The Station As I write this most of Hadleigh and indeed the County are basking in 23 degree heat and sunshine, hopefully summer is just around the corner. May is traditionally a great month for our Town with this year’s 179th HADLEIGH MAY SHOW taking place on Saturday 19th May. A day when we welcome thousands of visitors to join in the farming, crafts and livestock traditions of the county. When many people of the town both new and old meet up for the social side, enjoy the many stalls and also the fun fair, a great place for the children. I, for one, have lived here all my life and have only not attended the show on two occasions (in my life time) – it’s a great place to meet friends and I know that many families that have moved away, come back for just this day. Hadleigh SNT will again be attending both the Friday evening fun fair and the show day on Saturday. Come and say hello to us. On Friday evening we will primarily be making sure, along with a security firm, that everyone attending the Fun Fair has an enjoyable time. Parents with young children do not want to be subjected to or threatened by large groups of youths / teenagers who are drunk or cause issues on what is supposed to be a FUN family event. Anyone found to be in possession of alcohol will have it taken off them and poured away. Any underage drinkers or indeed drunken teenagers will be escorted home to their parents and maybe banned from entering the showground including the Fair for the next 48 hours. On Saturday, members of the team will be walking around, chatting to visitors and engaging with the community as a whole. We look forward to seeing you all and here is hoping that the weather is kind to us and continues to be hot and sunny. Just to cover a few other issues currently in the town. We have had a few incidents of bikes being stolen in the town, some even resprayed and painted so as to disguise the fact that they have been stolen. May I remind you all, that although on the whole we live in a nice town it is best practise to secure your bike by way of a chain or padlock when you go into any shops or pubs. Prevention is better than theft. Now that the days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer, we have noticed an increase in people/ youths using our parks. This is now a good time to remind the Town’s young people and their parents to be responsible and sensible during the evenings and forthcoming summer holidays. We hold a very strong view on Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) and we will take action against those who chose to diminish the quality of life of other residents. It also serves as a reminder that anybody over the age of 10 years can be prosecuted, and that we will still engage with a problem individual if they are under 10. We urge you all to contact us if you are a victim of ASB. Your call could be the missing link, or your information may be enough to prevent somebody else from becoming a victim. Last summer our Town was subjected to enormous ASB, we regularly had to deal with under age drunken youths who had no respect for their town, the parks, other residents and children using the parks. We will be taking a Zero Tolerance this summer, officers will be wearing body worn video cameras to record anything of any evidential value. Parents please be mindful of where your children are and what they are getting up to. Our Parks are to be enjoyed by all residents of our Town and should be a safe and fun place for everyone. Wishing you all a great May. Please feel free to contact Hadleigh SNT about any issues / ASB or anything you feel needs to be brought to our attention on the following: Email: hadleigh.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk Follow us on twitter: @HadleighPolice Police Connect: suffolk.police.uk/policeconnect EMERGENCY: 999. Pause for Thought There are times as we get older that it takes longer to do everyday tasks. The Bible has a lot of advice about living an interesting life; for instance there is a book written about a man named Job. In chapter 12, verse 12 it says: “Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to the old.” That advice has been giving me a lot of encouraging thoughts as I have got older. Trusting in God is my way. A book of wisdom called Proverbs in the Bible says this in chapter 3 verses 5 and 6: ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.’

Vintage day at Bridge Farm Barns We shall be putting out the bunting on Saturday 9th June for our “Vintage Day” at Bridge Farm Barns. We will be hosting a Vintage Fair on our front meadow where you can browse the selection of stalls selling all sorts of retro and vintage wares. Brian Shaw will be entertaining us with his vintage style comedy and singing. Esther and Dave will be spinning 1940s/50s discs (ok probably CDs these days!) and providing dance demos - even teaching you if that takes your fancy, so bring your dancing shoes! Various vintage vehicles will be on display and there will of course be refreshments for all. There is no entrance fee but a donation to the St Elizabeth Hospice is greatly appreciated should you wish to pop some coinage in the pot on the day which runs from 10am to 4pm. If you are a vintage seller and are interested in taking a pitch please call Wendy on 07816328674. If you have a vintage vehicle that you would like to exhibit for the day please call Caroline on 01449 740456.

News from Whatfield School Ofsted ‘Good’ 2018 What an exciting start to Spring for Whatfield Primary School. Ofsted came for a visit and found us to have maintained our ‘GOOD’ status. The inspector was especially impressed by the pupil’s behaviour – which was ‘exemplary’, the motivation, attitude to learning and work ethic of the pupils and the highly motivating curriculum. Parents were pleased to speak to the inspector and one commented ‘The school provides a caring and nurturing setting in which children can thrive.’ All the parents who responded to Ofsted’s online questionnaire, Parent View, would recommend the school. The school was also commended for effective safeguarding and leadership. For a look in detail at the report, please look on the Whatfield School website, or online on the Ofsted website. As a ‘gold’ Sportsmark school, people will be aware that we take sport very seriously, and enter as many competitions, tournaments and festivals as are feasible. We are happy to say that we continue to employ a specialist PE teacher with a particular interest in Gymnastics – which is thoroughly enjoyed at Whatfield School. Last month we entered two teams into the schools competition and are proud to say that the U11’s have moved through to the county finals! All of the competitors kept their composure and put in an excellent performance in front of their peers. Last term, just before the clocks changed, Whatfield School took part in their twilight walk, which was really well attended by families and pupils. During the day the children cooked some delicious soups and baked bread, so that they could be enjoyed by all. The evening ended with marshmallows being toasted over the open fire, a lovely sweet end to a beautiful evening’s walk. Whatfield School were also pleased to be involved in a wonderful arts project at the Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds. A great team of staff and pupils spent time creating an art work entitled ‘Light and Shadows’ from recycled items. The results were spectacular as the pieces were hung with those from other church schools for the Cathedral’s ‘Inspire’ exhibition. We also made use of the work in St Margaret’s church for our Easter service in March. Of course we have also been celebrating the very good news that we are now in a formal Federation with Bildeston Primary School. As Headteacher across both schools, which are both graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted, I am very proud of both, and look forward to the many ways we can enrich pupil’s learning and achievement as we continue to work together. We never let being small put a limit on what we can do. As we say about Whatfield CEVCP School, small is beautiful! We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome. Please telephone 01473 823 309 or email admin@whatfield.suffolk.sch.ukto make an arrangement to meet us. Lynne Golding, Headteacher www.whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk

Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh approached the last month of the season with a lowly league position in the Thurlow Nunn competition. Narrow defeats against Coggeshall and Godmanchester were capable displays against highly placed teams but there were better displays to come. New signing Danny Smy scored twice in a three goal win against Thetford while the next match saw Walsham beaten by the odd goal of seven in an exciting contest. We were still trying hard to avoid being relegated. The Reserves gave a great display in a five goal win at Wivenhoe with Sam Sharp and Felix Vardon-Barber both scoring twice. A good two goal win against Haverhill saw Alfie White and Vardon Barber on target in a good team display in the reserves competition. Sharp and Lambert scored in a win against Whitton Reserves. Our youth team and Veterans have both gained some good results despite a number of their matches being postponed in the wet weather. The Veterans did particularly well to win their league championship. The Reserves and youths both finished mid-table. Prize winners in the latest monthly draw were Lynda Ward and Peter Hutchins. Ground Improvement winner Peter Tampion. Draws made by John Cardigan.

You can forget all about America and talk of trade wars with China or firing missiles at North Korea and Syria. The real battle for world domination took place in our clubhouse in April as Diane Miller and John Martin took on Barbara Bourner and Robin Beard in the final of the Stone Street League. After an epic struggle, Diane and John on the right came out winners. In the meantime our expert groundsmen have been cutting and feeding the green to perfection ready for the start of our outdoor season on Saturday 21 April. It’s a sight to behold as you watch them up and down, up and down everyday, but now I think about it they’re probably just off for cups of tea. We’re very pleased to have made an arrangement with Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance to bring people along to play petanque every week with support from our members. Petanque is that game you see in French villages with lots of wine drinking and smoking French cigarettes. Our members who’ve volunteered to help are very happy with the thought of drinking wine on a sunny afternoon but somehow seem less pleased if they have to take up smoking French cigarettes as well. We have two Open Days for people to turn up and try out bowling from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 April so just come along. If you ever want to make arrangements to see for yourself at any other time you can always contact Jan Austin on 01473 828212.

Hadleigh Hares Once again Hadleigh Hares are organising a 9 week beginners’ running course this spring. Starting on Monday 23 April at 7pm from the Hadleigh Pool the course builds up gradually and aims to take you from “couch to 5k” with a mixture of walking and running. If you fancy giving running a go and would like some company and motivation along your journey or if you've let your running drop, why not take this chance to kick start it again for the summer? If you can comfortably walk for 45 minutes then you are good to go! The course costs £16 and you can sign up by e-mailing beginners@hadleighhares.co.uk Why not give it a go – even if you may have missed the first couple of weeks…. It’s never too late to start! Last month the weather continued to cause problems with the latest cold snap causing the Stowmarket Half Marathon to be cancelled due to icy conditions. Several Hares had expected to race but safety considerations took precedence leaving a lot of disappointed runners. Happily however, the Colchester Half went ahead as planned on 25th March and the Club was well represented with five runners, Karl Feagan, Shaun North, John Turnbull, Joanne Abbott and Joanne Sargent taking part. First back was Karl Feagan who finished just a few seconds ahead of Shaun in 1:30:03. Good Friday’s traditional 5 mile Sudbury Fun Run as usual attracted lots of Hares with no less than 13 joining the fun. As is now usual, John Scaife ran a great race finishing 3rd overall in 28:30 which works out at a blistering pace of 5 minutes, 42 seconds per mile. Well done John – a great effort – and well done to the other 12 Hares all of whom gave effort and commitment to come home with good results over what is a deceptively tricky course. The marathon season is now set to get under way in earnest. So far we have been ably represented by Kitty Rigby at Manchester who ran a strong 4:03:35 and we are looking forward to Brighton and London marathons over the next couple of weeks. Good luck to everyone who is taking part in either (or even both) of those. To round off the Cross Country season, our Captain, John Scaife has prepared a few words: “Our Junior Hares have had an excellent season in the 53-12 league. Despite having a younger aged team than most clubs our Juniors finished 6th overall which is their highest ever place. For the seniors, It required a huge turnout from both Springfield and Gt Bentley, clubs much bigger than Hadleigh, to send us to back to Pool B on the final day of the season. A couple of injuries to key members is the only reason we are returning to Pool B and we are aiming to return to the top division next season. At the Suffolk Cross Country Championships in January we had two ladies in the top 10 and our ladies team finished 3rd overall. The male team finished 5th out of 19 teams. From the Suffolk Championships 4 runners (Caitlin Fosker, Elisa Bostock, Dan Widdowson & John Scaife) were selected for the Suffolk squad and ran at the Inter Counties Cross Country race in Loughborough.” And finally…. It’s always nice to see the Club vest given an airing in exotic locations. Last month Dan and Santel Widdowson were in Cape Town where they took part in the 2 Oceans running festival which calls itself ‘The World’s Most Beautiful Marathon’. Dan took part in the 56K (34.8 mile) Ultra Marathon, finishing in 4:43:59 whilst Santel ran the Half Marathon in 2:05:28. Hadleigh Hares are a friendly local athletics club catering for all levels and abilities from beginners to marathoners and Ironman triathletes. It is a fun and friendly way of getting or keeping fit. If you fancy coming along and joining in at whatever level please contact us at chair@hadleighhares.co.uk or via Facebook. There is a beginners/improvers session every Monday evening at 7pm meeting at Hadleigh Pool, and we run a session for ladies only as well as more advanced running, and mixed ability swimming and cycling sessions throughout the week with our qualified coaches.
