Spade in the ground for new pool Work is underway, after ground was broken on the new £2.4m swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. As part of a £2.4m investment by Babergh District Council, with £200,000 of funds provided by Hadleigh Town Council and a Sports England grant (£150k), Hadleigh Pool and Leisure will have a new pool, expected to be completed in summer 2020. The development will be completed by Rose Builders and will include a brand new pool with five 25 metre lanes, disabled access, changing places toilet and shower facility, sauna and spectator seating. All existing facilities including the current pool will remain open and unaffected during most of the works. The existing pool will be demolished towards the end of the project once the new building has been connected to the existing centre. The area will then be re-landscaped into park land, resulting in no net loss of open space. Tracey Loynds, Development Director for Abbeycroft Leisure, said: “We are all about inspiring a healthier you and recognise that we need to improve our customer experience with modern fit for purpose facilities. This is a great investment for us and for the people of Hadleigh and will go a long way to supporting our community to get more active.” Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “Providing new community leisure facilities in Babergh is a real priority for us and it’s great that work is now starting in Hadleigh to do just that. “This work takes a huge step in helping our residents of today remain healthy and active, as well as ensuring that future generations can enjoy our leisure facilities over the coming years.”

Collaboration – A better approach to separation Separating from a partner can be an extremely difficult time both emotionally and financially. In the past, the more traditional approach to Divorce has been for the parties to resolve their differences in the courtroom, but increasingly, with court delays, this process can often lead to increased stress and cost to both parties. The premise of dealing with separation ‘collaboratively’ is for the parties to agree to achieve a settlement through collaboration as opposed to making an application to the Family Court. In the collaborative process, each party instructs a specialist, collaboratively trained divorce lawyer and all negotiations and decision making takes place in a series of four way meetings attended by both parties and their divorce solicitors. Control is given back to the parties in the divorce to set their own timetable and agenda for these meetings rather than a timetable being imposed by the court. As the parties have a direct input into the agenda they will each be able to discuss issues most pressing to them. It is possible to bring in experts to the four way meetings, where required, such as Independent Financial Advisers to ensure that both parties have the correct assistance to help them make important decisions for the benefit of their family. There is far more flexibility in the Collaborative process than the more traditional court process and so it can often lead to a speedier resolution of issues and therefore reduced legal fees. If the parties have children it is essential that communication is maintained to enable the parents to be able to co-parent their children when they have completed the divorce process. One of the benefits of collaboration is being able to keep the children at the forefront of all discussions in the hope that the impact of the divorce on the children can be minimised. There is still the obligation on the both parties to provide full disclosure of their financial positions to enable the parties to be fully informed before making any decisions. However, the process of providing this information is more informal and less restrictive. Ultimately, the collaborative divorce process hopefully ends with an agreement being reached between the parties which they have both worked towards together rather than a decision being imposed upon them. August 2008 to October 2019 The past 18 months Burt was struggling with a Unilateral Perineal Hernia. Although he had an operation to repair the hernia on 5th February 2018. Unfortunately the hernia came back after 5 weeks, so the rest of his time he appeared to be OK. Burt stayed at home for the next 9 months although he could still run about and chase cats out of the garden. But I new sooner or later the hernia would cause more problems and I would lose him. Burt was a very well liked dog and actually older than most people thought at 11yrs and 6 weeks. I am now looking for another Border Collie, so if you hear of one please let me know. Jerry Oxford

Hadleigh On Show - The Community Shows Why We Love Living In Hadleigh

Hadleigh is a small town with a big heart and that clearly showed as 1,300 visitors flocked to Hadleigh on Show, the town’s first large-scale community day. The event took place on Saturday 5th October and was an overwhelming success. All the halls of the Town Hall and the whole of St Mary’s Church thronged with chatter and excitement as 81 Hadleigh groups used the occasion to talk about their organisation’s activities. The show was opened at 10am by Bowza, Hadleigh’s hero dog, assisted by Kathryn Grandon, Hadleigh District Councillor and Babergh District Council Chairman. There were already queues waiting to visit the Show and soon all the rooms were filled with visitors who came from the whole district to find out about activities in the town. Everyone was astounded to see how much our town has to offer and the friendly, happy atmosphere was just amazing. Hadleigh on Show was organised entirely by volunteers and was the largest event in Suffolk Action Week (for volunteers). The Hadleigh on Show organising committee comprised: Ian Grutchfield, Glen Abbassi, Jan Devey, Kathryn Grandon, Jess Janas, Stuart Service, Liz Wilson and Anita Young, and on the day about 30 additional crew assisted. Ian Grutchfield, lead organiser, said: “It has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm of the town for our first event. We are very grateful to our sponsors, especially Hadleigh Thrift Shop, without whom we could not have held such a successful event. We are thrilled that so many groups have exhibited and so many people visited, it is more than we expected.” As well as 81 groups exhibiting, there was a full day of entertainment – including Hadleigh Ukulele Group, Hadleigh High School and perhaps the highlight – a vintage fashion show, showing fashion from 1950s to date. All four Hadleigh schools exhibited and there were music, sports, history, dancing, singing, voluntary and so many other groups showing. Many had great success: Gloria Powell MBE, Leader of the Brownies and Guides, was delighted to have found a new leader and new recruits and thought it was a great opportunity to demonstrate that Guides is about much more than crafts; the Ukulele Group had an opportunity to show the wide range of music they could play and the Archive group had many people interested in finding out about Hadleigh’s history. St Mary’s Church was delighted to fill the Church with community groups. Roger Young, a Benton Street resident, commented: “What a wonderful event you all staged. It was faultless. Well done. You have achieved the display of the Hadleigh activities as never before. Having lived in, and around, Hadleigh for over 45years, I am now aware of activities that I never knew existed. It was superbly well organised. I can guess how much effort went into the organisation. It was a great success. It should be repeated on a regular basis. Hadleigh is on the up, thanks to your initiative. I can't thank you all enough.” A video of the day will soon be up to view on YouTube.

Babergh District Chairman Cllr K Grandon said â&#x20AC;&#x153;My son Sebastian was a Cub and Scout at Hadleigh Sea Scout troop and I have kept in touch with the leaders over the years. We wanted the flagpole to go to a really good home, and Councillors felt that having a flag in Hadleigh was important. I am delighted we have been able to pass on the flagpole and flags to the Scouts and keep the flag flying in the district.â&#x20AC;? Former Cllr Peter Holbrook said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Over the years I have travelled around Europe and noticed that lots of towns and villages flew their national flag. I felt that it would be wonderful to do the same in my district. I raised it with my fellow Councillors at the time and we decided to personally fund a flagpole and the national flag here in Hadleigh, to be located at the Council offices in Hadleigh. When the Council relocated we wanted to make sure that we did not lose the chance to fly the flag in Hadleigh so I was delighted to hand over the care of the Hadleigh flagpole and flags to the Hadleigh Sea Scouts and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very confident that they will remain in good hands.â&#x20AC;? The Chairman, current and past Councillors joined the Hadleigh Sea Scouts to witness the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, and the presentation of the flagpole with three essential flags; the Union, George and Armed Forces flags were presented to Scout Leader James Pitcher by Peter Holbrook.

Whether you would like to nominate yourself, or a friend or neighbour, we would love to hear from you. And thank you, if you came to speak to us at the Hadleigh on Show event in October, or supported us in any way with the celebrity auction. You may or may not have heard of us - we are The Christmas Present Trust, and we provide a traditional meal for people in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, cannot be with family or friends at this time. We are an independent organisation, not affiliated to any political or religious organisation and we do not hold charity status. However, we are able to put on this event for free thanks to the amazing generosity of Hadleigh businesses and individuals, together with the incredible army of volunteers we have, without whom this would not be possible. We are now entering our fifth year, and last year we catered for 115 people on Christmas Day. Our motto is that there is always room at the inn… So here’s how it works. On Christmas Eve we set the scene at the Ansell Centre, music playing, mince pies doing the rounds and lots of festivity as we set the tables, dress the trees, and turn a blank canvas into something of a winter wonderland. On Christmas Day, we serve a traditional meal, with other dietary options available, to our guests and volunteers, and then provide an afternoon of entertainment. On Boxing Day, we dismantle all the decorations (boo!) but there is plenty of fun to be had with nibbles and wine, not to mention the odd seasonal song. Altogether now ‘Oh I wish it could be Christmas every day!’ Actually, no I don’t, because that would involve peeling one enormous mountain of sprouts! Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club Who can believe that a year has passed since we open the doors of Birch Farm to the members of Hadleigh Stars. We have trebbled our members since last September and now offer termly pre-school and after school recreational classes on Monday through to Saturday. We have parent toddler drop in sessions four days a week, a semi-structured class on Thursdays for children aged 18 - 36 months, our SEN group work on Saturday morning and over 50 children are signed up to our elite programme. This term we have started a new “tumbling group” on Friday evenings and have spaces available for children who have some gymnastics experience and would like to learn back flicks and somersaults. Congratulations to all elite gymnasts who competed in the County levels competition in September and the County floor and vault competition in October. We are really proud of you all and can see so much improvement every time you compete. Well done to Nicole Peddelty, Alice Reily, Brecon Bamsey, Darcy Emsden, Lily-Jane Perry, Evie Cooper, Effy Turner, Leila Herbig and Phoebe Emsden who all medalled at these events. In Blue Planet 2, David Attenborough showed a mother whale carrying her dead baby that died through ingesting plastic. The next morning, hair salons saw a big increase in clients wanting to know that their hairdressers were doing their bit for the environment and climate crisis. Lee Ashford, owner of Hadleighâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hair Lounge, is doing her bit. When you hear about businesses with a negative impact on the environment, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easier to imagine heavy machinery than hairdressing. Yet hairdressing, both as a sector and as an individual activity, has a massive impact. There are 40,000 hairdressers in the UK, using high levels of energy, chemicals and water. Non-recyclable waste from towels, wipes, single-use plastics and foils are the result of our growing appetite for the beauty industry, fuelled by media and big business who play on our insecurities. Hairdressers are keepers of secrets, often establishing long-term relationships of trust with a client, which positions them as social influencers. Lee clearly lays out her vision for looking after the planet in her Hadleigh salon, by carefully sourcing ethical styling products. She has brought in reusable latex gloves, biodegradable capes, tap water, eco-friendly flooring and chairs, energy-efficient lighting, plants, refillable shampoo bottles, efficient dryers and even eco toilet-paper. Small changes, big results. Perhaps the most important commitment Lee has made is to install eco shower heads on wash units, which reduce water use by 50%. There are many products that are better for the environment, not because they have â&#x20AC;&#x153;organicâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;ecoâ&#x20AC;? on the label, but because they reduce the need for hot water. Did you know the average showerhead uses 11 litres of water per minute? Taking a maximum of five-minute showers for a whole year would save as much CO2 as is absorbed annually by half an acre of forest (the area in which you could park about 75 cars). Choose to shampoo your hair twice a week, with a smaller amount of shampoo and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll use annually around 600 litres of water, significantly reduce your carbon footprint, and save the planet, one blow-dry at a time. Pause For Thought In recent years the television â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Goggleboxâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; has become popular and launched some ordinary people into the lower realms of celebrity. On this show, as a viewer, you watch other people watching television with their friends or family. While this idea may seem crazy, it can be an incredibly funny and entertaining show. However, while Gogglebox does give the impression that as a viewer you are being drawn into the conversation, and know the people on the screen, you are actually still distant from what is going on and even more distant from the events they are talking about. We watch what is going on from a distance. A number of years ago a variety of musical artists sung the song, â&#x20AC;&#x153;From a distance.â&#x20AC;? That song speaks about how the world looks and how people interact with each other and it says this about God, â&#x20AC;&#x153;God is watching us, God is watching us, God is watching usâ&#x20AC;Ś from a distance.â&#x20AC;? The song says to us that God has a Gogglebox kind of interaction with people, whereas the Bible teaches this, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Lord is close to the broken-hearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.â&#x20AC;? Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not looking on passively from a distance, he comes close and he gets involved. Perhaps as we begin to get close to the Christmas season itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth looking into how God did this in the most remarkable way. Pastor Chris Todd

The Cock Inn, Hadleigh Did you know that The Cock Inn in Hadleigh accommodates the town’s only bar billiards table. What is bar billiards some might question. Well, it’s a genteel, addictive and frustrating game (ask the landlord). It is believed to have originated from Belgium in the 1920’s and the table at The Cock dates back to around that time. The table is made of a flat piece of slate covered in green felt, similar to a pool or snooker table. The big difference is that there are no pockets but there are 9 holes sunk into the surface. Each hole has its own score , from 10 to 200points, depending on its position of difficulty. There is also the added fun of a wooden peg being placed at the front of each hole. The idea is to pot the balls into the holes without knocking down a peg. A fallen peg results in either your break score being cancelled or indeed you total score, meaning you lose points and may even have to start again. There are white balls and one red ball, the latter doubles the points gained when you pot the ball. The balls are returned each time they are potted though after 15 to 20 minutes of starting the game the internal bar drops down and no more balls are returned. The player with highest score wins! Its very different to snooker or pool as you normally try to pot the que ball rather that the ball you are playing off. The Cock plays in the Sudbury league and won it in 2018,. Matches are every Thursday evening during the season, which started in early October. The table is available for all to play and is playable most days except for the live music afternoon and evenings. It’s one pound to play and apparently that’s an increase on the 6d fee in 1933. Mind you a pint of beer was on 4d in those days! Pool players need not be disappointed as there is a nice pool table in The Cock Inn’s public bar for budding pool enthusiast. Available most days and evenings excluding Monday evenings, due to the Hadleigh Winter Dart League that started on the 21st October. It’s a pound a game too, but unfortunately the pub has run out of the 4d beer. Finally, Hadleigh now has its very own Open Mic night. It’s at the Cock Inn every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. Performers can simply bring along their instrument(s) and plug in to the in-house sound system. It’s a proper Open Mic, so no i-phone or tablet recordings allowed. Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group Prescription items no longer routinely prescribed in primary care NHS England has announced recommended guidance for certain low value treatments to no longer be provided on the NHS. Last year 1.1 billion prescription items were dispensed in primary care at a cost of £9.2billion. Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group spent £1m on prescribed paracetamol alone last year. Across England there is a lot of variation in what is being prescribed and to whom. Often patients are receiving medicines which have been proven to be ineffective or in some cases dangerous, and for which there are other more effective, safer and cheaper alternatives For low value medicines, NHS England consulted on a list of 18 treatments, drawn up with GPs and pharmacists, deemed to be ineffective, over-priced and of low clinical value. Of the 18, NHS England has agreed these treatments should no longer be routinely prescribed: • Homeopathy – no clear or robust evidence to support its use • Herbal treatments – no clear or robust evidence to support its use • Omega-3 Fatty Acid Compounds (fish oil) – essential fatty acids which can be obtained through diet, low clinical effectiveness • Co-proxamol – pain killer which has had its marketing authorisation withdrawn due to safety concerns • Rubefacients (excluding topical NSAIDS) – warming muscle rub products, limited evidence • Lutein and Antioxidants – used to treat the eye condition age related macular degeneration , low clinical effectiveness • Glucosamine and Chondroitin – used for joint pain, low clinical effectiveness NHS England has issued guidance to GPs and CCGs to remove ineffective, unsafe and low clinical value treatments, such as some dietary supplements herbal treatments and homeopathy, and restricting the use of a further 11. They anticipate that this will save up to £141 million a year across England. NHS England also plans a consultation on the prescribing of some ‘over the counter’ products. Areas include those that: • Can be purchased over the counter, and sometimes at a lower cost than that which would be incurred by the NHS – paracetamol is an average of four times as expensive when provided on prescription by the NHS, compared to when it is purchased in pharmacies or supermarkets. It can costs around £34 for 32 on prescription including dispensing and GP consultation fees • Treat a condition that is considered to be self-limiting, so does not need treatment as it will heal/be cured of its own accord, such as a common cold. • Treat a condition which could be managed by self-care, i.e. that the person does not need to seek medical care or could visit a pharmacist. Some over the counter products currently prescribed are quickly and easily available in community pharmacies where the public can also ask for an NHS consultation with a pharmacist if they are unsure about what treatment they need for minor conditions. Playstation Pre-School We have had a busy start to the new academic year and all of our children have enjoyed our topic work. This has included numbers and dressing up and making biscuits for Halloween. Christmas is always a busy time for everyone and we have lots of craft and play activities planned which we hope the children will enjoy, not forgetting our end of term Christmas party. The fundraising focus this year is to raise money for an interactive white board and we have set a target of £500. Thank you to everyone who joined us at Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics Club last Summer raising £80 and starting the funds for this item. Money contributed on Halloween dress up day has gone into the pot as has a percentage from the Christmas card orders. We have a children’s photographer at Playstation on the morning of Saturday 16th November. As this goes to print we have five slots available, please contact us if you are interested in attending. All rosettes at The Bildeston Crown The Bildeston Crown’s chef/patron Chris Lee celebrated last month when, once again, the AA recognised him as a 3 AA Rosettes chef. The Rosette scheme is a long established recognition scheme operated by the AA. Approximately 10% of all restaurants across the UK are of a standard to attain one rosette making up 50% of the AA Restaurant Guide; only 10% of the hotels and restaurants within the Guide will have three rosettes and above. What is a little unusual in Chris’s case is that this is the third time that he has won this sought-after status. The rosettes are awarded to the chef and not the restaurant and so if for any reason the awarded chef steps down from the role, James Buckle, Hayley Lee, the rosettes are suspended and the Chris Lee restaurant (and its new chef) needs to start the application process again. Chris was first awarded 3 rosettes back in 2007. The rosettes were then suspended when in 2013 Chris and his wife Hayley joined Philip Turner to start up The Chestnut Group. However, within a year, Chris had been awarded 3 AA Rosettes for Chestnut’s first hostelry near Newmarket. Then in September 2015 Chris and Hayley returned to The Bildeston Crown to run the business as their own and started all over again. “I can’t deny it. Thankyou Thank you to all the lovely people who flocked to Hadleigh Craft Group’s Macmillan Coffee Morning on Tuesday 24th September. Craft Group members had worked hard to make a dazzling display of cakes and crafts and to decorate the hall. They organised book stalls, craft sales, raffle and tombola. “Honorary members” assisted by producing stunning floral arrangements for the tables and running a super Succulents stall. Despite the very damp weather, the Ansell Centre was packed with people enjoying coffee and cake and browsing the numerous stalls. A huge raffle was held with wonderful prizes generously donated from near and far. The fantastic sum of £1389 was raised. Thank you again to everyone who helped us.

Osteopaths don’t just treat bones and backs... Hadleigh Osteopaths have been established in the Hadleigh for over 25 years and specialise in the Osteopathic treatment of all joint and muscle conditions, (including back pain, sciatica and sports injuries), as well as providing acupuncture in the Sudbury Clinic at The Kingfisher. When a patient has a bad back or an injury to a joint, there will be problems as-sociated with the other structures, such as the muscles and ligaments, or discs and cartilages. These are the structures and tissues that are more likely to re-spond to a manual therapy approach such as osteopathy. It is for this reason that osteopaths are trained to treat all musculoskeletal skeletal injuries, not just bones, and not just backs. We are capable of treating all types of joint problems, from the top of the head, (including some types of headache), to the tip of the toes, and all the joints in between. The term “osteopath” is really a bit of a misnomer for what we do. “Osteo” means to do with bone, and “Pathos” indicates a disease. Despite the title “osteopath” we do not “just treat bones”. We are trained to recognise all sorts of potential diseases and pathologies, in order to know when to treat and when to refer patients on for investigations or medical intervention. Indeed, if an osteo-path suspects that there is an actual boney pathology, they will usually refer this on to a doctor for appropriate medical investigation or treatment. The human skeleton is made up of approximately 206 bones. From the long femoral bone in the thigh, to the tiny auditory ossicles in the ear, the boney structure of our bodies functions in the most amazing way. The skeleton offers support by having a mobile column of vertebrae, with the skull and rib cage for protection of our important nervous system and internal or-gans, and our axial skeleton allows our limbs to hang from our shoulder and pel-vic girdles, giving us our dexterity and the capacity for locomotion. However, the skeletal system cannot function alone. Without the ligaments to connect bone to bone, and the muscles to act across the joints, or the nervous system to give information and feedback, we would really just be a pile of bones. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Speech was unlike any since I was first elected in 2015. I say this not because of the controversy over prorogation (the end of a legislative session) that preceded the State Opening (the start of a new one). Rather, because the Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ambitious commitments across the whole political piece underlined that we really are at â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the end of austerityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Not only have we announced new Bills, but new resource to underpin them. We have announced a major boost for school spending, levelling our schools up with those counties that have enjoyed historically higher funding levels for reasons that are hard to justify when every pupil should have a fair start in life. South Suffolk schools will see an average 6.6% increase in their budgets. We have committed to funding 20,000 extra police officers that will equate to 54 for Suffolk in the first year of a three-year tranche of additional recruits that I warmly welcome. I recently went on patrol with officers in Sudbury and know the challenging scenario they face. Nevertheless, extra funding must lead to better outcomes for frontline users â&#x20AC;&#x201C; thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s you and me, the patients; parents; residents; pupils and all those who use public services. Thus, the Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Speech set out a raft of new Bills that would enable our key services to deliver the improvements alongside bigger budgets. In the case of law and order, extra police officers are very welcome â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but they will not deliver lower crime if those who break the law are undeterred by the criminal justice system. Thus, we have new measures to strengthen deterrence, including a Sentencing Bill specifically to ensure that the most serious offenders spend the appropriate time in prison. Last month our Lunch Club, arranged by Sophie Rickards, had a very enjoyable afternoon at Millsoms in Stratford St. Mary. We also took part in, ‘Hadleigh On Show’ last weekend and thought that we had a successful day. As our Speaker got lost on the way to Hadleigh this evening, we had Tea & Biscuits while he set up instead of at the end of the evening. This month we had a practical demonstration from Mr. John Hewson on how to plant, ‘Autumn Hanging Baskets’. He told us that a Summer hanging basket is cheaper to plant as not many plants are needed as they quickly blossom and fill the spaces. For Winter you need to fill the basket with more plants as they are slow-growing but have the advantage of lasting longer. In Summer, the idea is to keep in as much moisture as possible, whereas, in Winter, the plants get too much water and so they need to be able to drain well. For good drainage, Mr. Hewson used a mix of 5 parts compost to 1 part grit. He planted two kinds of baskets; a plastic one and a traditional one with a liner. In the plastic one, he was able to plant Violas round the sides, while in the middle he planted colourful Pansies with Sedge Grass and a spider plant as well as trailers of Variegated Ivy and Vinka to grow down the sides. In the second basket, he planted Erica and an alpine to flower later with a reddish Sedge and an evergreen Ajuga, trailing Lavender (Platinum Blonde) and a Cyclamen for a splash of colour. He gave a few little tips about care and planting as he went along, making it look all very simple and finishing with two very attractive baskets. Real Time Ultrasound Scanning at Hadleigh Physiotherapy Hadleigh Physiotherapy are delighted to be able to offer real time ultrasound scanning in clinic, with Helen Forth, our pelvic health physiotherapist. Real time ultrasound is the same type of imaging used when someone is pregnant to view their unborn baby. Physiotherapists use it to visualise muscles in order to assess how well they are working. It can be a very useful learning tool for clients who are unsure if they are exercising correctly, or who struggle to feel their deep “core” stability muscles. The cylinder of stability formed by the deep abdominals, pelvic floor muscles, deep spinal muscles and the diaphragm is vitally important, and often needs retraining for people with low back or pelvic pain, and many other musculoskeletal conditions. Many people find it difficult to know whether they are exercising these muscles correctly – this is where an ultrasound scan can be incredibly helpful. The physiotherapist will hold a probe against your skin, using some gel for contact, and can then show you how your muscles are working on the screen. You can then learn how to exercise them correctly for optimum function. It’s the most wonderful time to hear… As the festive season draws closer, most of us will be looking forward to reuniting with family and friends. For someone with hearing loss, the Christmas period can cause a lot of anxiety for fear of embarrassment and stress of trying to communicate with their loved ones. One in six people across the UK experience some form of reduced hearing, but nowhere near that amount act to improve their hearing. Many believe that they are being a martyr by ‘getting on’ with hearing loss, when actually it can drive a wedge between yourself and those around you. The tendency of those with significant hearing loss is to avoid communication and social gatherings altogether to save their own embarrassment. Modern hearing aids are much smaller and more discreet than they ever used to be and packed full of amazing features that will help during the festive period. Also most hearing aids now have Bluetooth connectivity, meaning not only can you adjust your hearing aids via a remote control or even your smartphone, but they can also connect to the television and play the audio from your favourite Christmas film directly into your ears so you can watch along with your family and hear every word. Hadleigh & District Flower Club Having completed the official business of the AGM on 8th October, we settled down to a very entertaining demonstration by our own Chairman Chris Hodge and her very talented sister Jane entitled “The Two Sisters”. Canine Crèche: Entrepreneur Candace Rose’s customers are hairy, lively and contented. It’s not surprising given the wonderful surroundings these canine clients enjoy each day when their owners drop them off at their very own crèche. Fidelis members were staggered when they learned of the luxurious facilities and extensive activities available to the dogs. They also heard how Candace started this unusual venture and then developed it into a highly successful business with many new centres and additional services opening all the time. Candace was an entertaining speaker with a passion for her dogs and enterprise which made for an enjoyable, informative talk. The White Crow is an absorbing biopic based on the life of the late prima ballerina Rudolf Nureyev. As the film had an exceptionally brief showing at other local cinemas, ladies were happy to support the one performance recently aired at The Quay in Sudbury. Ralph Fiennes was the director. He also appeared as a convincing Russian ballet master together with an uncanny Nureyev look alike who could almost replicate the staggering performances of the man himself. Food Bank Collection Members were reminded to bring their donations to the next meeting when they will be collected in time for distribution before Christmas. Lists of most wanted items were circulated.

Art Club Activities We start the month of November with the subject of feathers. Whether simple pigeons feathers or splendid feathers of the peacock, bring some feathers in and explore the colours to be found on them. On November 12th the popular subject of portraits crops up, followed the next week with silhouettes or half faces as if in shadow. A chance to be creative here! The 26th of the month a nod towards the festive season which is approaching swiftly. The subject is a called “Christmas themes. This means mistletoe, holly and designs for Christmas cards. The Art Club, which is always happy to welcome newcomers, meets in the Hadleigh Library Seminar Room on Tuesday afternoons at 2pm.

By the time you read my November blog the clocks will have gone back and we’ll all be in darkness by teatime. That’s why I’m showing off photos of the Pony Day we had in early October when the weather was lovely, nobody got cold or wet, and the 6 participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Well done everybody. We had a presence at the ‘Hadleigh On Show’ event on the same day and saw many old friends and riders as they passed our table. I had my very own poster that generated lots of interest. We think we may have picked up some more helpers, you know who you are, and a big thank you to you three. It will be great to have you on board. Getting cold and wet is part of the joy of involvement with horses, as many of my readers will know. The maintenance team has a brilliant way of keeping warm, however, and if you’d like to find out what it is, do come up here and join it! Pumpkins, fireworks, and rehearsals for Christmas nativity plays all contribute to the rapid pace of the Autumn term. Here we push on for our riders’ achievements and progress and everyone enjoys the signs of success, however great or small they may be. I know Margaret will be looking out for a baby from our riders’ or volunteers’ families to take the part of Jesus at our carol service on December 7th. What are you up to this month? If you feel time is dragging, or your own four walls are closing in on you, why not try something new? There is a valuable slot here for everybody, whatever your skills, or lack of them. We horses need help with everything, from making coffee for the volunteers to working a computer, our four hooves do a remarkable job for disabled riders but we can’t manage the practicalities without human help. I know the lovely volunteers and their riders are suckers for cake. What a surprise they got when Teresa, of the Italian Cook Book fame, arrived with a large cake tin one Friday last month. Not only that but she has raised several hundred pounds for us by sales of the book, so its another huge thank you from the herd and the (hungry) people here. Well Above the Parapet Suffolk County Council - Cllr Mick Fraser Babergh District Council - Hadleigh South Suffolk County Council - We Are Listening I was joined by the leader of Suffolk County Council (SCC) - Cllr Matthew Hicks, Cllr Gordon Jones - Cabinet Member for Finance, and senior managers at our “We Are Listening” stall in Hadleigh’s Market Place on Friday 18th October. Residents from Hadleigh and surrounding villages came along to express their concerns and ideas with respect to SCC services. Issues such as bus subsidies, roads and Benton Street were discussed. All these issues will be collated with those from the other events held across Suffolk and be used to develop policy and identify where funding is most needed. I was also able to bring some recent pavement problems quickly for their attention. Division Boundary Changes Due to the recent reorganization of the District Councils across Suffolk, SCC has considered whether its structure needs reviewing also. Therefore, work is currently underway in reviewing SCC’s division structure. On 24th September, the Local Government Boundary Commission (LGBC) opened its consultation inviting proposals for a new pattern of electoral divisions for the county. The Commission is minded to recommend that 70 county councillors should be elected to SCC in future, a reduction of five from the 75 currently in post. In drawing up a pattern of electoral divisions, the Commission must balance its statutory criteria, namely: To deliver electoral equality where each county councillor represents roughly the same number of electors as others across the county. This would equate to approximately 8,500 per division, whereas Hadleigh currently has around 6,700. So, what will this mean for Hadleigh? It is very likely that the division size will increase to include several neighbouring parishes, which our future county representative would be responsible for. The two funding pots of Locality Budget and Local Highways Budget would have to be spread over a larger population and wider area. The Commission now invites proposals from SCC, interested parties and members of the public on a pattern of electoral divisions to accommodate those councillors. Further details about the review are available on our website at www.lgbce.org.uk. The new electoral arrangements for the county are scheduled to come into effect at the County Council elections in 2021. Suffolk’s Adult Social Care The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the Government’s Regulator for Health and Social Care. I am very pleased to report that the CQC has rated over 87% of the county’s care homes as being Good or Outstanding. This is an improvement of 13% over last year and places our services at 5th in the country out of 153 local authorities and 2nd when measured against those of a comparable size. This is a ‘really good news’ story and reflects the dedication and hard work that all our staff involved in this sector have done. Sizewell C Stage 4 Consultation In September, SCC and East Suffolk Council published their proposed joint authority response to EDF Energy’s Stage 4 public consultation for a new nuclear site on Suffolk’s east coast. This joint report makes it clear that the authorities continue to support the principle of a new nuclear power station at Sizewell and recognize the significant benefits that such a development would bring. Both councils want to see a sustainable transport strategy put in place by the energy firm to ensure that every effort is made to reduce the impact on road use and congestion as part of any development that takes place. Each council continues to expect EDF Energy to maximize the development and use of marine and rail transport options. EDF Energy has used this latest round to offer further detail on freight management strategy options, which explain broadly how they intend to move materials, machinery and people through Suffolk to access the development site. The scale of investment surrounding development of a new site at Sizewell would be similar to the London 2012 Olympics, believed to be worth around £14 billion. EDF Energy expects the development to generate £100m for the regional economy during construction and £40m each year during its operation. Library Life: The Towers of TBR TBR: to those unfamiliar with the initialism, you will probably be familiar at least with the situation whereby you accrue an ever-increasing stack of books To Be Read. Librarians are perhaps the worst for creating these looming edifices of paper delectation. When you work in a library people have two go-to points (okay three, but I am discounting, ‘Do you have a loo?’ because yes we do, and yes you can use it) and they are: ‘Do you get to use the stamp?’ (Answer, yes, and indeed it is very satisfying.) And then, ‘You must get to read a lot of books.’ At which point any librarian within ear shot will laugh maniacally and gently bang their head against the counter. We LOVE books. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to work in a library who doesn’t. We get to see all the new stock first and of course an enormous range of genres passing under our fingertips - but they do just that - fly past quickly, no stopping - and there is certainly no time to read. But, like so many library users, it doesn’t stop us from dreaming of hours spent on the sofa under a blanket with a cup of coffee and the time to make a serious dent in our TBR pile. I think, somewhere deep at the centre of us, we all understand that reading and being read to, stories, exploring and increasing our knowledge is fundamentally important. We know that it not only increases literacy and therefore communication but also enhances mental wellbeing and the ability to be empathetic and curious about the world. On a recent shift, I heard a young man say to his mum, ‘I can’t choose, there are so many good books.’ And that, I can honestly say, made me as happy as if I’d finally got to the bottom of my TBR pile*. *Who am I kidding - there is no bottom! Hadleigh Community Choir It’s not often we get to perform with belly dancers, glamorous models and Morris dancers..... sadly never, when I think about it and more’s the pity. So there we were at Hadleigh on Show waiting to go on when we’re suddenly surrounded by belly dancers. Well, still my beating heart. We were there to provide a few golden oldies...no, no, behave yourselves, I don’t mean those blokes at the back of the choir....some songs from the 1960s onwards for the amazing fashion show, hence the glamorous models. I think we were doing all right singing doowop while polka dots, bobby soxers and teddy boys floated past, and still good when the hippies, plastic boots and mini skirts came on. But then glam rock appeared to great applause and several people fainting in the audience. Fluorescent mohican haircuts, silver knee boots and the sort of military jackets you only ever see on South American dictators.....I did briefly wonder if we should make it our next uniform and might check the idea out with the choir, but probably best to do it standing near an exit. Mmmmm, or maybe the belly dancing outfits would be better? We had a good time so why not come and try it? (The singing not the mohican haircuts....) Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday October 14th 2019: Almost every seat at our meeting last month was taken, as club members and visitors came to hear an excellent talk by Shirley Sampson (on the left in the photograph) from the RSPB garden at Flatford, her subject was gardening for wildlife. The garden at Flatford was established to educate people on how a few small changes in their approach to gardening can make a big difference to the wildlife population in their gardens. The decline in the number of house sparrows is linked to the lack of insects to feed their young and gardeners can play a big part in providing an environment to support wildlife. Water in the garden, even a small container planted up will make a difference, establishing an area where wildlife can overwinter and not tidying every part of the garden in the autumn will help, as decaying leaves and rotting wood are wildlife friendly. Having as many different plants as possible that provide shelter as well as food is important and providing plants that produce nectar in the spring and autumn is essential. If you would like to find out more information then the garden is open from April until the end of October but you could go along when the RSPB have their Big Garden Birdwatch in January and speak to someone or pick up a useful leaflet or two. We had some lovely entries for the competition this month and the table was groaning under the weight of 'a vase of autumn colour', congratulations to Carole our winner. It was nice to see several new visitors in October and we hope to see them again soon. Monday November 11th: We are lucky enough to be having a speaker from the prestigious Hyde Hall gardens in November. Rob Brett is coming to talk to us about our need for plants. The meeting starts at 7.30pm in Hadleigh Town Hall. The entrance is £4 for visitors and £2 for members to include refreshments, there will be a raffle and plants for sale. Hadleigh Walkers We had 11 walkers for our October walk despite continuous rain making it a bit muddy under foot. The Kersey Bell was a welcome sight at the walk’s end. Our November walk on Saturday 9th will take advantage of the new more regular bus service. We will catch the 91 service towards Ipswich at 0900 (Co-op side – as it’s Saturday, bus passes are valid) and alight at the stop before the Beagle pub. We will start the walk at Valley Farm Lodge and proceed via the Grange, Washbrook Church, Coles Green Farm, Longlands Barn, Orchard Lea and end up at The Hintlesham George. This portion of the walk is about 5.5 miles and we should arrive well in time to take a breather and catch the 1235 bus back to Hadleigh for any who don’t want to proceed further. The remainder of the group will continue to Hadleigh on foot via Hintlesham Hall, College Farm, Ram’s Farm, Old House, Shooting Box and then either Wolves View or Aldham Hall into Hadleigh. This portion of the walk is also around 5.5 miles. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy or rough in places . As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Looking further out to December, we are planning a walk from Hadleigh, through Raydon Great Wood to Raydon, Shelley, the Layhams and back To Hadleigh where we will organise snacks at the Cock which will give us all chance to discuss plans for the new year. Down to Earth ...with Dave Autumn is now with us and the seasonal clear up should be well under way. With all the rain that we have had lately it is important that any saucers under the various pots in the garden are removed. They should be washed and stored away ready for use next year, I find that an old supermarket crate makes an ideal place to keep them. If the pots are not on a well drained surface like gravel then they should be raised up on three little feet to make sure the pot does not become waterlogged. If we do get any dry spells then the grass will benefit from a cut and any hedges can be given a trim to keep them tidy for the winter. In the greenhouse the bumper crop of butternut squash have been ripened and are now stored in the cool of the garage. A basket of them was displayed on the garden club table at the very busy Hadleigh On Show event held in October, a very popular event that hopefully will be repeated next year. As usual the small onion sets are growing nicely in their little pots in the greenhouse, they will be planted out before long, let's hope we do better with them than we did last year. The large terracotta pots that had geraniums in them during the summer have now been planted up with tulips and topped off with winter pansies. The geraniums were such strong plants that some of them have been cut back hard, potted on in large pots and put in the greenhouse for next year. On the allotment it is all about clearing up, the summer fruiting raspberries have this year's growth cut right back to the ground and the best of the new growth kept and tied into the framework, the autumn fruiting ones are cut right back to the ground. With the mild weather we have had they are already showing signs of new shoots but they were still cut right back. A generous mulch of home grown compost is applied to them and also to other areas around the rhubarb, dahlias, daffodils, gladioli and the asparagus. The runner beans are still to be cut down and composted after the best of the seeds have been saved for next year. The roots of the runner beans will be left in the ground as the nodules on them are a valuable source of nitrogen. Back in May I wrote about the DEFRA ban on the use of slug pellets containing metaldehyde that was supposed to come into force next year. Following legal action from the manufacturers this ban has now been put on hold. Why anyone should want to use anything as nasty as this I do not know. That's all for this time Dave

Hadleigh Town Council Report Report by Councillor Dr Siân Dawson I should like to extend my sincere thanks to the organisers of the Hadleigh Open Show, it was a most enjoyable day and was an excellent example of how we can all get involved in our local community and hopefully many of you signed up to the some of the clubs and activities. Work is underway, after ground was broken on Thursday 26 September on the new £2.4m swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure - As part of a £2.4m investment by Babergh District Council, with £200,000 of funds provided by Hadleigh Town Council and a Sports England grant (£150k), Hadleigh Pool and Leisure will have a new pool, expected to be completed in summer 2020. All existing facilities including the current pool will remain open and unaffected during most of the works. The existing pool will be demolished towards the end of the project once the new building has been connected to the existing centre. The area will then be re-landscaped into park land, resulting in no net loss of open space. Councillors asked to consider renaming District - At a special meeting on Tuesday 22 October, councillors will debate whether to change the name of the district council from Babergh District Council to South Suffolk Council – making the council geographically consistent with neighbouring authorities in Suffolk. I have asked the CEO of Babergh and the Leader of the Council to quantify what inward investment would be expected if we were to make a name change. The cost would be £10,000 however, the inward investment far exceeds this then it may be appropriate to make the name change to help inward investment. Babergh seeks proposals for Belle Vue House - Babergh District Council is seeking formal expressions of interest and proposals for the future of the landmark Belle Vue House in Sudbury. After inviting interested parties to view the building in September, groups have until 1 November to submit their plans. Further guidance on the information required as part of submissions is also available as part of an information pack the Council is providing online. First Sudbury Silk Festival a hit - Residents may be interested to know the first Sudbury Silk Festival was held on Saturday 7 September, attracting crowds and gaining both national and local media attention. Included in the Festival was the launch of Babergh’s own Sudbury Silk Stories archive, a collection of interviews both on camera and microphone detailing the history of the Sudbury silk industry and what it is like to work in the town’s worldleading silk mills. The archive is online along with a short film showcasing the history and stories uncovered. Joint Local Plan consultation closes - Thank you to all our Town and Parish Councils, and to all residents, who took part in our Joint Local Plan consultation. This has now ended, with the deadline for responses arriving yesterday (30 September). Our Strategic Planning Team will now be going through all the comments received and considering how to amend the draft plan accordingly. We will of course keep you up to date with next steps going forward, and you can find all the information on our Joint Local Plan on our website. Free Swims to continue - With the summer holidays over our Free Swims for under-17s have come to an end. The offer saw outstanding take-up in Babergh, with 12% of under 17s in the district registered. A total of 1,918 people registered, with 1,205 at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Keep an eye on our Babergh website over coming weeks for plans to run the scheme during future holidays. During the Christmas holiday this year, Babergh District Council will their free swims offer for under 17s to help promote healthier and active lifestyles in the districts. Recycling information at your fingertips - June’s parish briefing included information about the renovation of the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Gt Blakenham as well as helpful online links to find up to date information on recycling in Suffolk. With recycling high on the agenda for the Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee this month, and in line with our 2030 carbon reduction and greenest county ambitions, we’ve highlighted below the key online resources available to our parishes and residents 24/7 when navigating the dos and don’ts of recycling. Following the Local Government Spending Review, I have summarised the main points below: • We have had confirmation that the Fair Funding Review, Business Rates Review and business rates reset has been deferred by 12 months to 2021/22. • There is a £2.9bn increase in Core Spending power overall. Most of the additional funding is for adults and children’s services, but there is £54m for Homelessness, which will help us. • The Council Tax referendum limit is proposed at 2% but this will be subject to consultation in the provisional Settlement. • Baseline funding will be uprated by CPI. • Funding to remove negative RSG has been continued for 2020/21. • New Homes Bonus – legacy payments will be honoured but the scheme for 2020/21 is still for discussion with ministers. • 75% business rates pilots will come to an end and there are no new pilots planned for 2020/21. • £40m additional funding for Discretionary Housing Payments. • £23m to fund a range of measures around Universal Credit – whilst this won’t come to us it will be a positive support for people in the districts. • Continuation of the Discover England Fund to promote inbound tourism – not sure if we have looked at this before. • £241m in 2020/21 in the Towns Fund to regenerate high streets, town centres and local economies. • Additional £30m for BEIS to accelerate the development of decarbonisation schemes. • In terms of next steps, a technical consultation will be issued on the settlement ASAP with the provisional settlement being announced in early December. Kenneth has been out and about again, this time he met his public at our ÂŁ1 Sale in Newton Green last month. He was pleased to have a photo with the cute little granddaughter belonging to one of our local volunteers. Thank you to everyone who helped raise ÂŁ685 which will go towards caring for the rescued animals this winter. Our last fundraising event of the year is our Christmas Fair, 10-3pm on 17th November at the Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX. There will be gifts, cards decorations, clothes and accessories, pet items, books, CDs, DVDs, a big tombola and raffle. Refreshments and snacks available including lots of homemade cake. Meanwhile, please remember to keep your pets safe during the firework season, there are lots of ways to help your animals, ask your Vet for advice. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget about wildlife either. Check for hedgehogs before lighting the bonfire, they love nesting in the leaves and twigs. Whilst thinking about the garden, this may be a good time to install a bird feeding station if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t already have one. Of course this will be a great temptation to me and my kind so position it where cats cannot reach it. If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website - www.layham.org Parish Council Parish Council Below are the main matters discussed during the parish council meeting of 18 September 2019: • District Council report A special council meeting on 22 October would debate and vote on a proposal to change the name of the council to South Suffolk District Council, to align with the other district councils in the county. Councillor Ward said a full merger with Mid Suffolk District Council remained a possibility for the future; for the time being the two councils were working well together and there were no plans to merge in the short term. • County Council report It was noted that bus routes were under review – the Clerk would ask Suffolk CC about the possible impact on Layham. It was agreed that Councillor Curran would try to respond to the EDF consultation on Sizewell 4 on behalf of the PC by the deadline of 27 September. • Training Councillors would join Raydon PC’s in-house training session on planning on 29 October. It was agreed that general councillor training would be an agenda item for the October meeting. • SCC Community Self-Help Scheme Councillors would attend a meeting with SCC on 19 September to discuss the scheme in more detail. • Speeding The working group’s report was noted. It was agreed to ask Highways to go ahead with a traffic survey at either end of the village; the working group would agree the exact locations with Highways. • Joint Local Plan consultation The Chairman and Vice Chairman had attended a drop-in session; their report was noted. It was agreed that the Chairman would respond to the consultation on behalf of the PC. • Remembrance Day Councillors would check whether the War Memorial required cleaning before Remembrance Sunday. The Clerk would purchase a wreath as usual which the Chairman would lay. Layham Local History Group One thing leads to another. Whilst researching the stories of WW2 servicemen and women from Layham we met Heather Snowling (nee Richardson) whose father and two uncles served in the Royal Navy. In conversation we found that she had photographs of life, before and after the war, on their small mixed farm (Frogg Hall Farm) which she was prepared to share with us and which are now copied and included in our Layham Archive. They are important photographs as they record some methods of working long gone. The photograph on this page shows what would have been quite common in Layham at one time – the picking of the valuable cherry harvest from the small farm orchard. Rodney Richardson is on the ladder and his wife Mildred and their eldest son Kenneth are standing below. The identity of the other two men is not known but they were probably neighbours or relatives. Note the traditional fruit-picking baskets. If you have any family photographs of farming in our village we would love to hear from you with a view to copying them for our archive. Layham Playgroup We have been having lots of fun exploring the theme of food and Harvest, having lots of opportunities to try new foods for snack and making some tasty treats to take home. We shared a Harvest celebration with our friends at St Andrews Church, we also took some sausage rolls we had made to enjoy afterwards!! We are now moving on to look at all the lovely autumn colours. We had a walk to the park, where we could see the changes in the trees.

Huge interest in Partridge’s exhibition Over 400 people flocked to an exhibition charting the 200 years of history of an iconic hardware shop in Hadleigh. The event was staged by the town’s Archive Group, after several bundles of old property deeds relating to M W Partridge & Co Ltd - which started off as an ironmongers and foundry in 1819 - were donated to the town. It changed hands many times before the current owners took over in 1984. “We were surprised just how much interest this has created,” said Sally Looker, Archives Group volunteer, who researched and created the exhibition, and was constantly questioned by the stream of visitors during the two-day event. She unearthed so much information about the store and that it almost represented a social history of Hadleigh. This included a murder and a highway robbery, in addition to a wealth of documents relating to trade and apprenticeships. She said that many ex-employees added to that stock of material, including one, Jim Hill, who had worked at the store for 50 years, when the business was a major supplier to agricultural equipment to the area. Currently, there are plans to redevelop the site which is located in the town’s High Street and George Street. Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together

Visit to Gainsborough House Sudbury Pupils in KS2 visited Gainsborough House in Sudbury where they had an introduction to Gainsborough’s landscapes and became portrait artists themselves. They drew close ups and whole pictures in the style of Gainsborough looking at colours and textures. They also completed part of the Talbot Trail around Sudbury which is full of interesting and surprising information about our local town. Once back at school they researched facts about Sudbury and physically produced a chronological timeline!! Harvest Assembly Our children and staff were joined by parents and the newly appointed Reverend Elke Cattermole to celebrate our school Harvest assembly. Children read poems and sang songs that they had been learning. Our Charity this year was the Stowmarket Food Bank. The kind donations were collected as the children came into school and these have been taken to help those in need. Refreshments were also available and donations raised £44.00 which will go to the Macmillan Cancer Care charity. Thank you to everyone for their generous donations. Grandparent’s Lunch Over 190 lunches in two days were served when grandparents joined our pupils for lunch! We always receive such a wonderful response from this special occasion and it is a privilege to meet grandparents and show them the school. U9/U11 Cross Country Event Pupils were invited to Hadleigh High School to compete in a cross country event held on Friday 20 September. They all completed their event and did exceptionally well! PTFA Pumpkin Competition On Wednesday 16 October, children from the school met up locally to show off their entries at the PTFA Pumpkin carving competition. There was an amazing turnout for this event and the three winners were each given a prize for their efforts, with the winner also receiving a Hollow Trees voucher. The DIY Deli Carpaccio of Tuna Invented in Italy as recently as 1950, carpaccio is widely served as a starter in expensive restaurants, but it needn’t be expensive; nor is it difficult or timeconsuming to prepare. This recipe uses fresh tuna as a base ingredient but it can be adapted for any fish with a meaty texture such as monkfish swordfish and the like. A similar process also works well for premium cuts of meat such as fillet of beef or venison. Special equipment needed A long sharp (not serrated) knife with a straight edge; knives with any curvature on the edge present slices of uneven thickness with wastage at the edges. A plastic board that is longer than your fish. A glass, ceramic or food grade plastic dish or tray just big enough to lay the slices without overlap. Ingredients Around 150g of fresh tuna, 1 lime, 1 shallot 1 tbsp dry white wine – sauvignon blanc is ideal, A bunch of fresh dill A small handful of fresh flat leaved parsley, 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Method 1. Cut the fish into 4 thin slices with a single stroke of the knife; any seesaw motion will make for broken slices. If you don’t have the right knife get your fishmonger to do it for you. Lay the slices on the base of your tray or dish. 2. Take the zest of the lime and sprinkle it evenly over the slices; squeeze the juice into a small jug and mix in the wine; drizzle evenly over the fish; the lime juice will cook it while you watch. 3. Lay a frond of dill on each fillet; remove some parsley from the stems & place over the dill. 4. Chop the shallot finely and sprinkle evenly over the dressed fish. 5. Cover with cling film and place in the fridge for 15 minutes; it is now ready to serve. To serve: Place on a plate with a little salad and a slice of wholemeal bread & butter. Serves 4 as a starter or 2 as a light lunch. Storage: this needs to be eaten fresh; its easy and quick to prepare and not worth trying to preserve.

Dear Sir, It is a little late to bemoan the fact that the Passenger Train Service from/to Hadleigh Station terminated on 29th February 1932. However the useful Community Bus Service to/from Manningtree Station has been discontinued from November 2019 along with the evening services and Sunday services to/from Hadleigh and Ipswich. which many have been found so useful over a number of years. This is a great inconvenience to persons, particularly those who have used the services to get to/from work, and would continue to use if available. We need to contact our local authorities and councils and Suffolk Country Council to reintroduce these bus services and maintain others which also have been so useful where many elderly people in local villages, without their own transport, need to have an easy means of getting around and particularly for shopping. There surely is a duty on local authorities to provide and maintain adequate public transport for the use of their communities. The many Buses which serve our local villages only carry a few persons. Surely the Community Buses which are not large could be used to carry those people who live in the local area instead of large double decker buses. John Cunningham

We both did Bake Sales to raise extra funds for Cancer Research UK where Gemma raised £114.85 and Pamela raised £206.35 from cakes sold at Keith Avis where a ‘small change’ collection box raised a further £30. Hadleigh on Show The Nursery Team recently took part in 'Hadleigh on Show' which gave us an opportunity to meet the people of Hadleigh and tell them all about our Forest School Nursery. We had some craft activities on offer for the children to have a go at, and displayed lots of the activities that the children take part in within the woods. We could also tell everyone that we are going to start building our Woodland Nursery base very soon! Please contact the school if you would like to come and visit us and see what we offer. Music The children have made an excellent start in their weekly class music lessons and are learning to focus on the interrelated dimensions of music with singing, instrumental work, improvisation and composition. Extra music tuition is again very popular with three large recorder groups, violins, flutes, clarinets, performance opportunities and a strong choir from Years 4 to 6. All children in KS2 will continue with ukulele and the Year 3 children are very excited about their first lesson. Eco Club The new Eco club started this half term. It is going from strength to strength, meeting up every other Wednesday on a lunchtime. So far the children have designed posters and planted seeds thanks to a kind donation. Staff are also embracing being Eco warriors with recycling their compostable waste, paper, plastic and foil in the staff room. Sport On Friday 20th September 2019, we took 32 pupils to compete in the Under 9's & Under 11's Cross Country event at Hadleigh High School. A total of eight schools entered the event. For the Under 9's race, the runners had to cover a distance of 600 metres, while the Under 11's runners had to cover a distance of 1,500 metres. There were around 220 children in total competing that morning, with around 60 runners in each of the four races.All of the HCPS pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves, with some of them asking if they could run the race again! Overall, our Under 9's team won the event and our Under 11's team were runners-up! This was a fantastic achievement by all of our runners! Well done to them all!

Kenneth has been out and about again, this time he met his public at our £1 Sale in Newton Green last month. He was pleased to have a photo with the cute little granddaughter belonging to one of our local volunteers. Thank you to everyone who helped raise £685 which will go towards caring for the rescued animals this winter. Our last fundraising event of the year is our Christmas Fair, 10-3pm on 17th November at the Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX. There will be gifts, cards decorations, clothes and accessories, pet items, books, CDs, DVDs, a big tombola and raffle. Refreshments and snacks available including lots of homemade cake. Meanwhile, please remember to keep your pets safe during the firework season, there are lots of ways to help your animals, ask your Vet for advice. Don’t forget about wildlife either. Check for hedgehogs before lighting the bonfire, they love nesting in the leaves and twigs. Whilst thinking about the garden, this may be a good time to install a bird feeding station if you don’t already have one. Of course this will be a great temptation to me and my kind so position it where cats cannot reach it. Despite the recent rain, the Environment Agency says water levels are low, creating a small pond would help birds and amphibians. Your county Wildlife Trust can advise you. Kersey Mill Newsletter Over the last month, work has continued with the Mill’s stone machinery, namely the “runner” stones. These are being replaced before the associated stone furniture can be reinstated. Mill stones are stones used for grinding wheat or other grains and they are arranged in pairs.

Above the circular bedstone is the rotating “runner” stone, which actually does the grinding. Mill stones have to be accurately balanced, perfectly level and precisely the right distance apart in order for the process to work and also to prevent the stones from grinding against each other. The runner stone is supported by a cross-shaped metal piece (rind or rynd) which is fixed to a mace head topping the main shaft, which leads to the driving mechanism of the mill, the waterwheel. Each of the runner stones is divided into sections called harps. The harps have a complex grinding face cut into them consisting of “lands” which are raised sections and “furrows” which are the grooves. As the runner stone spins above the stationary bedstone it creates a scissoring or grinding action. When the grain falls into the centre of the runner-stone from the hopper and down through the shoe, it is forced outwards by the pattern on the surface of the stones and the centrifugal force. The grain is crushed between the lands and falls from the edge of the stone as flour. It will then pass down a chute where it can be bagged as 100% wholemeal flour. White flour is produced by a wiremachine or “bolter” which is a series of sieves, made from graduated fine mesh and used to separate the 100% wholemeal flour into bran, semolina, and white flour. The next phase will be work to the Mill’s elevators and bolters. Now that preparations for Santa’s Workshops are well underway, further restoration work will remain on hold until the New Year. Hadleigh Steering Group The Hadleigh Steering Group met on Monday 14th October 2019 and was Chaired by Kathryn Grandon. The Group meets at 4.15pm on the second Monday of the month at the Leisure Centre and all residents, businesses and those with an interest in Hadleigh are welcome to attend. This summary of our last meeting gives a flavour of some of the matters that were discussed or presented. 1. Main Agenda Item: Hadleigh Guildhall Complex 1438 – 1990 Jan Byrne - Summary provided This was a brief background history on how the Town developed into the affluent industrial Town that it became. There being no overall Lord of Hadleigh, the chief inhabitants, the cloth merchants, together bought the Market lands and rights from the Manor of Toppsfield Hall (as it was called then), which included the Market lands and the rights from the Manor of Toppsfield Hall, which included the Market House, Long Hall with Almshouses underneath and probably a Market Hall on the site of the present Corn Exchange. They rebuilt the Market House and managed the Town from these buildings becoming the Hadleigh Market Feoffment. Over the centuries the property had multiple public uses, with the Feoffment being most famous for the way it managed the Poor Law requirements and having one of the earliest ‘Work Houses’ or ‘House of Correction’ in the County, running from the 1570’s through to the 1820’s. The buildings at various times housed the Grammar School, the first Free School/National School. There have been shops on the ground floor, rooms were used for feasts, banquets and theatrical productions. It is difficult to identify exactly which rooms were used for what purposes. The building having both shrunk and grown over its 600 year history. For most of the buildings life has been the centre of Local Government as well as the major centre for Town life and activities. The Market House and Guilds halls are listed as Grade One with the New Town Hall Grade Two. Together with the Grade One Deanery Tower and Grade One church, they form the unique historic centre of Hadleigh. 2. Updates: 2.1. Hadleigh Town Council: Five months into office, Hadleigh Town Council is progressing with Committees and Working Parties up and running. The advertisement for a Town Manager is now on the website and will be in the Press this week. Following this, there will shortly be adverts for Finance and Admin staff. A working party is to be set up to develop a Strategic Plan for the current Councillors’ term of office, 2020 to 2023. This is hoped to make provision for Community Engagement, bringing in views of the Public. Surveys will be carried out in paper format and on line. Future events include Christmas, where a working party has been set up and will shortly report to the Council. Alongside the British Legion the Council will support VE and VJ days next year. Suffolk Radio have awarded Hadleigh the chance to host Suffolk Day in the Town on June 21st next year. Preparations will begin in the New Year and we will be looking for ideas and volunteers! Finally HTC would like to formally congratulate Ian and his team of volunteers for the very successful Hadleigh On Show. It was a wonderful day for Hadleigh and there were so many congratulatory comments afterwards. 2.2 Babergh District Council Re Kathryn’s involvement in Democracy Day Babergh webinar with Suffolk Schools. One of the schools was particularly interested in Hadleigh’s Tidy Town Group and was considering starting their own Tidy Town group. Advised that the B.D.C. E.GM planned for 22nd October regarding the name change from Babergh to South Suffolk has been postponed 2.3 VISIT HADLEIGH Pop up Visitor Information Jane Snowdon trained and managed 6 VIPS (Visitor Information Providers) to provide the services of a Visitor Information Centre for 9 weeks from 12th August to 12th October; we would have started earlier if it had been possible. During this time we saw a total of 327 people, more than a third from out of the county, or from other countries. The V.I. Log book contains details of what was asked for and how we helped. The records help us to learn. As a result of cuts this year V.I. services are now provided differently within the five Wool Towns, except for Sudbury that continues with a full-time TIC. I have drafted a leaflet with place, days, opening times of information providers in the five towns to help those visiting the area if they want to actually speak to local people. Town Guided Walks Only one group town walk this year rained throughout but was still completed. Otherwise take up for Guided Walks has only been slightly down on last year, which is good considering the weather this year. The ready access to The Memories of Cedric Morris exhibition in the VIC and promoting the Guided Walks from there has helped. With information on Hadleigh’s History, Where to Stay, Food & Drink, Shopping, What to Do, How to Find Us and a full calendar of events… Please take a look and let us know your thoughts: www.visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk We have asked all the High Street businesses to contribute £75 per annum towards the running costs of the website. 2.4 Legacy Group/Community Gardens and Hanging Baskets The first set of railings, to screen the bottle bank, is now in place sponsored by The Hadleigh Legacy Group. In the spring we will be planting flowering climbers to enhance the gardens. The High Street hanging baskets still have

some colour, revived by the rain but will soon be taken down and made ready for next year. 2.5 Tidy Town Volunteers continue to provide a wonderful service. Reminder that the cigarette end pouches have been distributed around the town and are available from the Tidy Town Group email ourtidytown@gmail.com 2.6. Hadleigh and Boxford PPG MMR Vaccinations Measles is in the news again. There have been serious outbreaks in Wales and England and the number of children catching measles is rising. The catch up clinics are not arranged by the Health Centre, NHS screening do this and send all the invite letters. If a patient is overdue then they will be continued to be invited in for the immunisation, although sadly some parents still chose to decline this important immunisation for their child. Leaflets have been sent out via the schools. Supplies are on schedule. Patients are encouraged to have their jab at the Health Centre. Missed Appointments Last month, September 2019, Hadleigh and Boxford surgeries had a combined rate of 163 missed appointments, 65 for GP’s and 98 for Nurses/Clinics. This is the equivalent to a cost of £4,890 or 27.7 hours. Connect for Health at Hadleigh on Show The PPG found it a very useful experience, not only networking but also talking to potential participants . As a result of the day, we have had a number people phoning in for Community Connector appointments. We have also had a number of referrals as a result of our Connect for Health article in the Hadleigh Community News. Congratulations to the HoS organisers and volunteers. 2.7 Hadleigh On Show Ian Grutchfield thanked all those who sponsored or volunteered. The overall cost of staging HOS was c£4,000 (including £2500 in payments, £1500 in waived hire fees) “It has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm of the town for our first event. We are very grateful to our sponsors, especially Hadleigh Thrift Shop, without whom we could not have held such a successful event. We are thrilled that so many groups have exhibited and so many people visited, it is more than we expected” Key Statistics: 1223 guests counted into the Guildhall, 900 guests counted into St Mary’s Church, 30 crew/volunteers additional to the total, 620 HOS Guides given out, 81 groups with representatives attending 3.1 A Hadleigh Christmas Hadleigh Town Council have created a Working Party to deliver the Hadleigh Christmas Tree Lighting event which will take place on Saturday December 7th between 5 and 9pm. We met twice in October. We have a budget of £3,000, more than has been allocated in several years, and it is a great responsibility to spend it efficiently and give Hadleigh the Christmas it deserves. Grateful thanks to those Hadleigh organisations and businesses who are already on board including everyone who has rented a stall to sell lovely Christmassy things. A Christmas window competition will also take place and a raffle of donations from Hadleigh businesses. The tree will be lit at 7.15 with singing, a brass band, majorettes and dancing. There will be a Santa Claus, food and drink, activities and surprises, which we will reveal nearer the time. The Porch Project have kindly offered to steward the event. Press and social media will be updated with meetings and volunteers are welcome to join us to help in the build up and on the night. A Facebook Page ‘A Hadleigh Christmas’ has been created. We have applied for a road closure for Market Place at the junction with the High Street and adjacent to the Ram, leaving access to the residences and the pharmacy. We will not have absolute confirmation until two weeks prior to the event, which is standard practice for this process. Locally, in an offer believed to be unique in the country, businesses in Suffolk have access to dedicated business Brexit advisers. The advisers, Michael Chapman and Koyas Miah, are funded by Suffolk Public Sector Leaders and are managed by Suffolk Chamber of Commerce. Hopefully new

interested individuals will join the monthly meetings and keep informed. We have a newly-minted Facebook page and quite a lot of interest in it. We had a presence at Hadleigh on Show, with a poster designed by members. One member has established the Water Refill strategy for Hadleigh. Another member writes a regular column in Hadleigh Community News on environmental issues, which can reflect some of the HEAT work: we will nominate an Eco-hero each month and there will perhaps be a yearly event to celebrate this.There is already a HEAT ‘Our Tidy Town’ action team, and we hope to create other teams according to interests (e.g. rewilding; cycling; community allotments; reducing plastic waste; food waste; plant-based diets; composting, education etc…) NEXT St Grp MEETING: 11th November @ 4:15pm Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Huffers to get your breakfast from, at any time of day, With steaming mug of coffee, made that special Huffers way. Andrew’s, the butchers, spotlessly clean, Come in and see it all - all the meat’s lean: Lamb, beef, chicken or veal - all you need for a wonderful meal. The Co-op in Hadleigh, well, what can I say? The hub of the town, in its own sweet way. The scruffy little doggy watches from the window, Wishing he could play With all the little boys and girls, going on their way. The ladies that serve us seven days a week, with papers to read And pens to write, and cards to send to make things right. Jubilee Cup Final for Stoke On the 30th of September, the team from Stoke by Nayland travelled down to Canons Brook on a very grey Sunday morning, all meeting at 11:30 as they prepared for their 3rd final in a row. The team of 2019 very much changed from the 2017 victors and very different from the team that started the season back in March, a testament the strength in depth. The pairs went off at 1:30 on the 8th, all striking the ball well whilst the singles then started at 2 on the 1st. After the first 5 holes the matches were very even but by the turn the score board was very blue, Playgolf up in 7 matches, 1a/s and 1 up for SBN. However after a run of pars the opening singles player for Stoke by Nayland, Ian Collett taking the first point winning by 3&2 but this was quickly counter balanced as Nigel Byham lost 5&4. Trevor Brace had his player at dormie 3 but a never say die attitude by the opposition meant the match went all the way with Trevor seeing it out on the 18th. Stoke 2-1 up. Quickly following this Eric Fisher 3&2 and Ian Todd 3&1 put Stoke in a very strong position. All supporters quickly shot over to the last singles match as this was key and it was a real ding dong but Rich Fryer just lost out on the 18th green. 4-2. All now jumped on buggies as pairs over on the 3rd, some distance away and there had been a big turnaround with both Maj Cutis/Keith Hodgson and then Norman Davidson/Darren Russell losing 4&3. 4-4. Over to the last pair Adrian Cherry/ Steve Martin, 40/50 supporters now watching on the par 3 5th and Adrian steps up to the plate and puts it 3feet from the hole- birdie secured to go 1 up with two to play. Adrian and Steve then both played the par5 6th so well, both on green in regulation with that man Adrian sinking the winning putt. And Stoke by Nayland take the trophy for the third time in a row, Richard Bland being presented the trophy by organiser Phil Redhead. Steve Clark

Lawrence Werber presents â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Dickens at Christmasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Until he retired last Christmas, Lawrence was the dentist at The Looking-Glass Dental Practice at 72 High Street. Many of his former patients will know that he had a parallel career as an actor, an unusual combination that at times needed a lot of understanding from them - like when he was offered a job at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon: which meant being able to work in Hadleigh on Sundays and Monday mornings only for the 2month duration of the run. Lawrence is presenting a Christmas-themed version of his acclaimed oneman show â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Dickens!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; in his home village of Great Bealings, near Woodbridge, at the end of November. The venue is Annesley Hall, a historic Great House with a magnificent double-height hall with a minstrelsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; gallery, designed as a performance space, with wonderful acoustics. Owners Nicky and Ben Morton-Wright are keen supporters of the arts, and warm and welcoming hosts. September in these parts is dominated by the Great East Run. The half marathon is a hugely popular event and attracts over two thousand entries from the local area. The start is at Portman Road in Ipswich and the route takes runners out of town to Freston and back along the river estuary. This year a fantastic seventeen Hares took part some of whom are in the photo above. First lady Hare was Alice Heather-Hayes who competed in 1:27:40, and first male Hare was Aiden Bell in 1:30:25. Congratulations to all our finishers! The other main event last month was the Hares Charity Quiz Night at the football club on 27th. Teams of six battled it out over some tricky questions set by quizmaster Bob Grimsey. A fantastic night raised £390 for CALM, the club’s chosen charity for 2019. Many thanks to Bob and his team for organising a great event.

Chelsworth Christmas Fair Saturday 7th December Are you stressed by busy high streets? Is internet shopping too impersonal? Treat yourself to a peaceful and personal, Christmas shopping experience at Chelsworth Christmas Fair on Saturday 7th December from 11am until 4pm. The Fair is held in Chelsworth’s beautiful medieval church and is a truly festive experience. There will be about 20 stalls selling crafts, gifts and festive foods. There will also be seasonal refreshments and some musical entertainment from Serendipity; plus, of course, the famous and fabulous, Chelsworth Christmas raffle. Entry is £3 for adults, children free and also free entry for Chelsworth residents. Car parking is free at a nearby farm. Chelsworth is on the B1114 between Lavenham and Bildeston

Hadleigh Table Tennis Club A start has been made in the Ipswich League with Hadleigh “A” playing in Division 1 and Hadleigh “Owls” in Division 3. The “A” team are off to a good start and currently placed 4th from 10 teams. Two victories were registered against St. Margarets Jacks, 9-1, and against Pickwicks Stowmarket “A”, 64. The first loss was against a strong Britannia Swifts team by 9 games to one, Mike Emmerson recording the sole singles win. New addition Chris Mayhew has started the season well by winning six of his nine singles. Close behind is the dependable Mike Emmerson with five from nine. Streve Holland has won three from six. Unfortunately Team Secretary, Peter Wright, is still absent with an ankle problem sustained last season and may have to wait until after Christmas before returning to competitive play. The “Owls” having had two fixtures postponed have only managed two games. The first was a loss against Kingsfleet by seven games to three followed by a win against Britannia Buzzards by the same score. In the latter Rupert Pyett, David Rickett, and new player Richard Oakes, all won two singles games each. David has scored well in both matches having won four games from six played. Richard in his first season has won a commendable three from six, with Rupert winning two from three. Once they catch up on their postponed matches a higher League position should result. This Season’s League Cup has a record entry of nineteen teams. Both the “A” side and the “Owls” have byes in Round 1. It is a sad fact that as a Sport Table Tennis has suffered a drastic decline in recent years. This season the Ipswich League has only 40 teams playing in four Divisions. Five years ago there were 44 teams, and ten years ago 53 teams. Wind the clock back 20 years and there were 59 teams playing in five Divisions. Going even further back to season 1979/1980 there were 142 teams playing in eleven Divisions. There are many reasons for the decline, but the game in the Ipswich League is mainly being played by the mid to older generation. Regretfully it is a fact of life that only a few younger players are coming into the game and unless this alters the situation in the Ipswich League will not improve. Ken Rodwell (Secretary)

Hadleigh Tennis Club Two annual events to report this month. The match against Bildeston went ahead despite the threatening weather and rightly so as most was played in dry conditions. This year the Ladies’ match was tied and the trophy will be shared. The Men’s match was won by Hadleigh mirroring the first match in 1881. After the tennis a fine tea was enjoyed by the teams. The last Sunday morning in September saw the Club celebrate the end of the summer season with the traditional President`s tournament. This is fun event but still with a competitive edge. Members play tennis in a variety of formats, including mixed doubles, ladies and men’s doubles and this year in a new “champions” team tennis. Individual players accumulate points towards the result of the tournament. This year 20 members turned out despite the possibility of heavy rain. As it was the rain held off and the eventual winners were Liz Allen and Sandy Claireaux who share the “Ken Goddard memorial cup”, for the next twelve months. Peter Richards, Hadleigh Tennis Club president, presented the trophy to the worthy winners. Other prizes were won by Paul Knowles and Eunice Scott who won the prestigious President`s Tennis Quiz Prize!. The competition was followed by a convivial buffet lunch where members discussed the points that” just got away”. We play all year round on 3 floodlit all weather courts located on Layham Road next to the rugby club. For the winter season Club Play sessions are on Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday mornings from 10.00am to 12.00 pm. Stoke by Nayland Ladies Over 40 Ladies dodged some very heavy showers to take part in our Autumn Meeting on Stoke's Gainsborough Course on Thursday, September 26th. It was the last major event of the golfing year so everyone was very pleased for Diana Harris, Lady Captain, who won the event and the Specialist Shield with 36 points. Runner-Up was Alison Jennings with 35 while three Ladies - Janet Hodge, Katie Clark and Katrina Bygrave - all scored 33. The afternoon greensomes front nine winners were Katie Clark and Catriona Chaplin with 16 points and Janet Hodge and Barbara Rowe took the back nine with 21 points. A good supper restored the spirits of those who hadn't done so well and we were able to see the fantastic array of goods donated by all Lady Members to a Colchester Food Bank.

First Team News The first teams mixed results have continued with a 3-1 home defeat against a strong F.C Clacton side on Sept 20th, this was followed by a match at Long Melford losing 4-2 in the Thurlow Nunn League Cup on Sept 25th. Saturday 28th we were definitely not at the races for our trip to Newmarket as we lost 4-0. Friday night football at the Millfield on 4th Oct saw Woodbridge the visitors with two new players in our squad Emmanuel Machaya and Cruise Nyadzayo on dual registration from Bury Town added strength to the squad as we ran out winning 2-1. Tuesday 8th Oct a trip to higher league opposition A.F.C Sudbury in a Suffolk Premier Cup tie with the score level at 2-2 a penalty shoot out to decided the winner saw our 'keeper Nick Punter make three fine saves to see us through to the next round against Lowestoft Town as we ran out winning 5-4. A long trip to Leighton Town (Leighton Buzzard) in the F.A.Vase saw us drop out of this competition as we lost 2-1. A Friday night trip to Stanway Rovers on 18th Oct saw us well beaten by a strong well organised Rovers outfit losing 4-0 Reserve Team News Sept 28th a trip to Diss Town is always a tough encounter but on this occasion we beat the hosts 3-1. Saturday 5th Oct saw a long trip to Bildeston Rangers Reserves in a Suffolk Reserves Cup match which saw us coming away with a 10- 0 win. 12th Oct Long Melford were the visitors which we can out winning 5-0. Oct 15th we hosted Halstead Town Reserves in quarter final match of the Chell Trophy this entertaining match saw us run out winners as we beating the current Cup Holders 3-0 to see us into the semi-finals as our fine season continued which it certainly did on Saturday 19th as we played Woodbridge Town Reserves in a league match we lead 1-0 at the interval but the crowd of 70 were treated to a 9 goal second half thriller as we won 7 -3 with Sam Sharp netting 4 times with Dave Strike , Jack Yaxley, & James Collis the other scorers . Under 18' News Our poor league season continues as Manager Tom Camp continues to rebuild the Team, despite playing attacking football we have seem ourselves lose 4-1 at Stowmarket, a narrow defeat at Whitton losing 3-2, 6-0 at home to Framlingham and another narrow lose at home to Woodbridge 43. However we have progressed further in the Suffolk F.A mid week cup with a well deserved 1-0 over Whitton United to see us into the next round. Veterans News A 4-0 home win against Cockfield saw the Vets remain top of division 3 of NSVL, before a tight Seniors (over 40) Cup match against Lowestoft Town on Sunday 20th saw a 3-2 victory. Hadleigh & District Summer Darts Invitation League The finals and presentation evening of the summer darts league was held at the British legion on Monday 31st September. The darts were almost insignificant following the sad news that Cock Jets team member Paul Dawes (Dawsey) had passed away following a motorcycle crash a few days before. Moving tributes from team members and friends took place before any darts were played including dedicating their league win to Dawsey. The evening continued as best as it could with KO cup, doubles and singles titles to be settled. Cockney Rebels won the KO cup beating the George dragons in the final, Glenn Bentley and Kevin Sparkes also from the rebels took the pairs title from Callum Morrin and Lloyd Dodsworth of the Cock Jets. The singles final was a repeat of last year this time rebels Tom King coming out on top beating Colin Hynard from the Dragons. Thanks to the British Legion for holding the event, and to Melvin Tilbury, John Martin and all the helpers on night (you know who you are) See you in the winter.
