A Royal visit for Shelley RDA
The Centre has had such an honour bestowed on it: a Covid friendly visit by HRH The Princess Royal, on September 11th. The palace asked if we would mind having her at relatively short notice as she had regretted having to cancel her visit in April.
Shelley swung into action and our Chairman Jan and Lyn worked hard to make the visit a great success. Unusually for a Royal Visit, numbers were strictly limited so priority was given to as many riders as possible and those Coaches who give their time and energy to instruct our riders. All the usual officials from the County, our wonderful sponsors and donors, the regular volunteer army and many other deserving folk had to be left out. As a result the visit concentrated on those 30 people who were there, and of course, the horses. Everyone had a chance to chat with Princess Anne, and she was most interested in the stories she heard. We do have some of our riders back in the saddle at last but it has taken a great deal of organisation. A new approach was needed, riders have to stay in their cars and wait for their hat and boots to be brought to them there, they may not come in the yard at all. A new entrance gate has been set up beside a hand sanitising dispenser and our riders now walk past the dung heap to get round to the mounting block. Lucky them. Our volunteers take on the task of delivering uncontaminated boots and a hat to each rider as he/she arrives, and the parent or carer helps get them dressed. After the ride has finished the carer or parent takes off the things that belong to us here, and places them on the ‘red’ table outside the stable block. That’s where a volunteer collects them for deep cleaning. Then between rides all the tack is disinfected and cleaned by other helpers. Its labour intensive but taking these precautions has allowed us to open up again. Here’s hoping all our readers stay fit and healthy as we reach the Autumn of this most peculiar year. We would like to thank everyone who has supported the reopening of the gym after such a long break. It has really lifted everyone’s spirits to be back at work, seeing children doing gymnastics and hearing the buzz of excitement throughout each Y MNASTIC session. The coffee shop is open to eat in or take away and as always, Anna is making a delicious selection of cakes to tempt us all. Our pre-school classes for children aged 2 years or above are available on Tuesday and Thursday. This class is led by our coaching team, but every child must be accompanied (and supported) by an adult. We have also put a booking system in place for our parent toddler sessions. These operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, but are becoming full very quickly. Hadleigh North Ward - September 2020 High Street Barriers - As expected, after a rather difficult Town Council meeting to say the least, I rather forcibly had to put your issues across and fortunately the barriers have been removed. Contrary to the erroneous and incorrect comments by Cllr Grandon, which I trust will be corrected, Cllr Fraser and I recommended to Remove all unsightly barriers, allow parking for residents, shoppers and deliveries at all times and retain one-way system as a temporary measure during the COVID restrictions. Going forward, whilst most residents supported a one way, this is not something that is going to happen in the foreseeable future. All these changes require recommendations, consultations and support from the local community and finance. Friday Market Place Road Closure - Suffolk County Council have advised and recommended that the only safe option is a continuation of the current temporary road closure order (TTRO) with some improved signage to support this. As you know the current closure is of Market Place (From High Street (B1070) until just before Victoria House) on Fridays only (6am – 2pm), with the diversion route in place from High street, Duke Street to Market Place and vice versa. Babergh DC will be the applicant for SCC Highways to provide a continuation of the TTRO from the end of current arrangements (25/9/2020). The TTRO can cover a period of up to 18 months, but may be reviewed and removed at any time, as COVID guidance changes. Arrangements have been put in place for the “gateman” services (placing and removing barriers and signage) each week. Trees and Corridors - As part of the Districts’ commitment to support and enhance biodiversity, Babergh are currently working, with partners, on mapping local areas so that we can identify where wildlife corridors need to be established or improved to link up sites throughout Babergh. In addition, we are seeking to plant more trees and hedgerows, not necessarily on our own Councils’ land in order to encourage more wildlife. A task force group has been considering this initiative and the results of those meetings and discussions will be the subject of a Cabinet report in November, and will detail the steps that both Councils wish to take in the future. Something that has become clear as a result of this work is that, aside from two or three small areas, neither district has much land available for tree planting so I am writing to ask if you own any land on which you would like the District Council to plant trees or hedgerows? There may be funding available next year for hedgerow planting from DEFRA, but we are awaiting confirmation of this. It may be possible for trees to be planted with the purchase and planting costs borne by the District Council, although we would ask that your town or parish be responsible for future maintenance. At this stage, I welcome any ideas from residents about future ideas for this initiative, such as some planting at the cemetery or any ideas you may have. Please contact me below with ideas?? It’s great to be back! What a fabulous start to term it has been. We have welcomed back children from the Summer term and it has been lovely getting to know the new children who have joined us. “Familiar stories” is our theme for this term. We completed lots of work on The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Dear Zoo in September and will explore Autumn during October using Owl Babies and The Gruffalo as inspiration. Hadleigh High School It has been an extremely positive start to the new academic year and we are delighted to welcome our students back after their summer break. Heritage Open Day at The Old School Hadleigh On Saturday 12th September, the Old School on Bridge Street, a Victorian building dating back to 1853, opened its doors, on National Heritage Open Day, as Hadleigh’s new arts and cultural venue. The occasion was marked with a popup Art Exhibition, featuring stunning artworks and sculptures by local artist, Cris Coe. A steady stream of over 350 visitors, from Hadleigh and surrounding villages, attended throughout the day, in keeping with strict social distancing guidelines. Some were pupils at the former Church of England School for Boys, who returned to the building for the first time in over 40 years, since it ceased operation in 1968. There were memories of frozen milk bottles and huddling around the pot belly stove in Winter. Also in attendance, were visitors who enjoyed many social and music events, when the building was owned by internationally acclaimed concert pianist and conductor, Thomas McIntosh and his wife Miranda. “It is so lovely to see the venue again.” Jobie West, from Hadleigh said “I attended many concerts and social events here, including a wake. It’s not just the music I remember, but also the food, as audiences enjoyed suppers during the interval and the chance to stroll around the garden.” The Open Day event was officially declared open by Cllr Frank Minns by reading out a handwritten message of goodwill from Miranda McIntosh, who is resident in a care home in Hadleigh. “I have been looking forward to this occasion, and very much regret that I am not able to be present, having to self-isolate. I was planning to tell you all about Tom’s purchase of the building and the alterations which he made and the garden which he created at the back from the playground. And I was going to relate details of his music which he performed here and particularly tell you all about the operas which he put on. I have actually prepared a list of them; 20 in all some of them little known and rarely performed. All of this will have to wait for another occasion and it only remains for me to say how pleased I am that the new owners of this fabulous building are keen to continue to make it available for public use. I am delighted to give this venture my full support. Good luck everybody!” The purpose behind this inaugural event, was not only to mark National Heritiage Open Day and to exhibit Cris Coe’s stunning paintings, drawings and sculpture, but also to consult local community by means of a questionnaire about events they would like to attend and participate in. The new co-owner and Venue Director is Ian Grutchfield, who grew up in Hadleigh and returned to his home town in 2015, having established a highly successful career in the tv industry said. “Suggestions included art, craft and photography exhibitions, concerts, poetry slams and talks on a wide range of subjects, such as gardening or history. More unexpected ideas included pop up dining and indoor ice skating.” Our Open Day combined new works of art & historical memories; and this idea of several forms of entertainment coming together is worth developing. For example, film, TV & music, or practical horticulture alongside a talk on flowers. I was honoured to meet Dick Jones - son of WAB Jones, Headmaster and author of ‘Hadleigh Through the Ages’; it was equally exciting to hear about the hidden talents of many local people - including a film/tv music composer and a costume designer!” The first scheduled event will be held on 2nd January 2021 in the form of a Poetry Slam featuring contemporary, award winning poet John McCullough. Joan came to Hadleigh in 1943 from the Lincolnshire fens were she worked the local cottage hospital as a nursing assistant after marrying her now late husband Gordon Prowse. They lived and worked on Garry farm of Pond Hall Road with Gordon’s parents William and Violet. When Joan first arrived in Hadleigh Gordon was called back to army duties and Joan was needed as a land girl on the family farm. Joan was a strong vibrant young woman and she adopted the approach of “Just get on with it!� She was an asset to the farm and relished spending time with her farther in law milking the cows on early mornings. When the war was over Joan and Gordon had three children Liz, Barbara and Graham. Joan was a very busy hardworking lady her duties often included and were not limited to household chores, milking cows and all the other labour intensive jobs on the farm which she loved. Joan also worked as a carer doing nights at Angel Court rest home were she was a very popular member of staff. In 1998 her beloved husband Gordon passed away and life on the farm became all a bit much for Joan, therefore she decided to move to Dunton Grove were she embraced her retirement and had a rather fulfilling social life. She was involved in the U3A and the Dunton Dollies! She also loved tending to her wildlife garden and going on walks with her Border collie Jess. In 2014 Joan amazingly recovered from bowel cancer at the age of 90! However she was then diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She continued to embrace her life but unfortunately in September 2018 her health deteriorated and she made the decision to move to Norwich so she would be closer to her family. She missed Hadleigh very much and loved to talk about all of her fond memories on the farm. Unfortunately Joan passed away peacefully on Saturday 4th July surrounded by her family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Joan will be remembered by many, for her bright blue twinkling eyes, her wonderful cakes and especially as she could often be seen herding her cattle down the High street and over Toppesfield bridge on her bicycle! Ansell Centre Charity for the people of Hadleigh and district Ansell Memories Cafe and Lunch Clubs continue to support members At the time of going to press, charitable events such as ours are allowed to continue as long as we follow all the government guidelines. During September we welcomed members to our weekly Memories Cafe, to the Friday Lunch Club coffee morning and afternoon tea, to the Wednesday Lunch Club coffee morning, all held outdoors, and even to the Digital Cinema following all the relevant COVID guidance. Friday Lunch Club Friday Lunch Club followed Wednesday Lunch Club’s example and invited its members along for coffee or tea with cakes and biscuits when they should have met for lunch in September. It was six months since they had been together in March and although everyone enjoyed Mr Kipling’s exceedingly good cakes it was the social interaction with friends and volunteers that meant more. Each session was restricted to 16 because of social distancing but everyone who wanted to come was able as a number of people still feel anxious about coming out to meet with others. They had sadly been shut for six months. In a sanitised environment, with the audience suitably distanced and wearing masks, we showed the film which had been cancelled in March. “Official Secrets” stars Keira Knightley in the role of a young British intelligence officer turned whistle-blower who tried to stop the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Our audience was gripped by the events of recent history celebrating the actions of an unsung hero. The Hadleigh Historian Issue 60 (October – November 2020 Running away to marry at Gretna Green in The Hadleigh Historian Scotland with the seventeen-year-old daughter of The Hadleigh Historian one’s boss would seem to be a bad career move Issue 60 October - November 2020 Price £4 but not so for ‘George Wilkins: the curate who eloped with the dean’s daughter’. In 1811, when this event took place, the law in England stipulated that a marriage ceremony should be held in the parish church where either bride or groom had lived for a least four weeks and with parental consent for anyone under the age of 21 years. In Scotland, formalities could be completed on the spot by hand-fasting, a ritual for which almost anyone had authority to conduct, when the couple’s assurances before two witnesses that they were free to marry were the only requirements. The story concerning George and his bride Amelia Drummond explains why Greta Green was so popular for such weddings during the 19th century and reveals a mystery, as another ceremony for the couple was also performed in a Cambridge church the following day. The reaction of Dean Edward Drummond (rector 1796 – 1829) is not that of many fathers at the time and George’s career in the Church progressed very satisfactorily indeed. The Hadleigh Historian welcomes to its pages for the first time Ian Grutchfield of Hadleigh with a most interesting piece entitled ‘The Magnificent Millie: a closer look at the woman who spent more time at Benton End than any other’. The lady in question was Millie Hayes, who kept everything going for the last two decades at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing established by Sir Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines. She was the housekeeper during their declining years and the story re-enforces the old adage: ‘Behind every man. There is a hard working woman’. Robert Davey of the Cedric Morris Estate is thanked for permission to reproduce the painting Mille at the window (1967) by Sir Cedric Morris. The occasional series ‘Round the back’ looks at Peyton Hall, on the south bank of the river just to the north of the town. Its style of timber frame, known as a raised-aisle hall, dates it at least two if not three hundred years older than its official Grade II listing and makes it one of the oldest domestic buildings in Hadleigh. Recently, The Hadleigh Historian has been busy with several requests for information and share some of them with you in ‘Doing local history during lockdown’. The questions include: What is under the floor of the north chapel in St mary’s Church? Where was my aunt’s grandfather born? The last one I was unable to answer for sure but the research was laid out as a twelve-page family tree covering seven generations of the Frost family: a magazine article for the future. Hadleigh Town Council Mayoral statement Since the elections in 2019 when you voted in a raft of new councillors there have been many ups and downs for Hadleigh Town Council. It seems so long ago, but during the first months in office we refreshed the Standing Orders and introduced a new structure to the decision-making processes, and started working with the District Council to develop a long-term Vision, but got set back when almost all our office staff left towards the end of the year. To those who remained and who kept the basic functions running, I thank you. Being a councillor at Town Council level is an unpaid position but nonetheless is one that I took very seriously and devoted much time to. It’s important that the people of Hadleigh are aware of the work going on behind the scenes at the Town Council, so whilst it’s not “showy” work, there has been a lot of process changes and updates, and recruitment of extra needed staff etc. But the pandemic lockdown happened just when things started to look up, and this placed a whole new raft of challenges at the Town Council’s door. I would like to thank all the wonderful staff for maintaining service and safety measures during the lockdown. Success hasn’t all been behind the scenes though, and I have also been proud of the achievements and camaraderie shown during the difficult time the town has faced during my brief time as Mayor. As I’m sure you are aware, our beautiful Guildhall complex is currently closed to the public; partly for Covid reasons and partly to do some much-needed repairs and maintenance works whilst we’ve all had to be tucked away and socially distanced. We’ve been busy obtaining grants and working with contractors and have several items being upgraded or revamped in the building ready for re-opening, such as new flooring on our two main staircases and redecoration of the main stairwell, as well as more mundane but essential works such as replacing the archaic boilers and installing a brand new commercial kitchen off the Old Town Hall. We hope that you will appreciate and support the building all the more once we re-open and we’ll let you know on the Town Hall website and social media when we’re ready to take bookings again. Unfortunately, being a Councillor also makes you a public figure for potential abuse and criticism. It is the personal attacks on me by individuals who have no knowledge of me or my beliefs that has partially led me to the difficult decision to resign as a Councillor. Meetings via video conference have also been challenging and difficult, especially regarding the high profile and contentious Covid-19 restrictions and safety measures that have been very emotive throughout. Please continue to be open and respectfully provide feedback to the Town Council by attending meetings and taking part in any future surveys and consultations. It is our opinions as the residents and businesses of Hadleigh that mould this wonderful thriving town. Please also be mindful that your elected councillors are unpaid, giving up their time and doing their very best to serve you - the people of Hadleigh, but they need your support and co-operation to do this. Flu Vaccinations 2020 This winter, the flu vaccination is more important than ever as we prepare for the potential risks of both flu and COVID-19 In line with national plans, phase one is to protect the most vulnerable, those aged 65 and over, people with certain long-term medical conditions, pregnant women and young children will be vaccinated first. We have organised our flu clinics in a different way this year due to COVID-19 and the need to socially distance. We will not be running open access clinics. We will be running three Saturday sessions in October. The dates will be:
Saturday 3 October Saturday 17 October Saturday 31 October Patients in the vulnerable groups will be invited by letter to attend. The letters for the first Saturday have been sent out. We will send the letters for the 17 October after our first Saturday flu session. We have a large patient group to write to, please be patient with us, we will be in touch soon. The children group age two and three years will receive a letter for a separate mid-week clinic. We strongly advise you attend your appointment. If you cannot attend, please do not telephone the surgery, we will be in contact with you again. If you have already had your vaccination, for example at a Pharmacy, please ignore your letter, our records will be updated with this information soon. Please attend your appointment at the time of your letter. We advise you do not bring your car to the Health Centre if you do not have too as we are expecting our car park to be very busy. Please do NOT attend your appointment if you have any of these symptoms: a high temperature, new continuous cough, loss or change to your sense of smell or taste. Please wear a face covering when you enter the Health Centre. Phase two of the influenza plan is to vaccinate patients aged 50 – 64 years in November and December, if there is the vaccine available to do so. At this time, we do not know whether we will be supplied with additional vaccine for the phase two group.

We are very excited to announce that our Holloween event will be happening again in 2020. Some things will be a little different, but despite offering a little less, the Hollow Trees Farm Holloween celebration is still the best! The Holloween Trail is a ‘trimmed twist on the norm’ but there will still be lots of spooky fun for everyone to enjoy. There will be all our usual friendly animals to feed, ropes to swing on, poles to climb and lots of fun and adventure all round. And NEW for 2020 is a golf course like you’ve never seen before. Our fantastic Magical Mini Golf will certainly challenge you all! The special Holloween Trail will also include the popular Cresta Run Sledges, the Sorcerer's Straw Stack and the wild Witches Wood. Polstead Village Hall At the last meeting of the Polstead Village Hall Committee on the 23rd July, Sue Wigglesworth tendered her resignation, after a period of continuous service as Chairman since 1993. Bill Wigglesworth also tendered his resignation from the Committee after a similarly lengthy period of serving. Sue organised an upgrading and refurbishment of the Village Hall in the 1990s and it thrived under her leadership until the present period of lockdown due to Covid-19, which sadly brought to an end, at least temporarily, many of the activities that take usually place, both on a regular and occasional basis. Sue was responsible for the introduction of the regular and very popular Village Lunches, undertaking much of the cooking herself, along with a team of volunteers. She organised many fund raising events, most of which included catering of some kind. In conjunction with the Suffolk Digital Network she instigated the monthly Film Nights, which have been a huge success with audiences not only from Polstead, but also from the surrounding villages. Sue became Chairman of the Digital Network in 2004. Bill has ably, and for the most part singlehandedly, run the bar at Film Nights and other Hall events, as well as supported Sue in all that she has done. His presence on the Committee, nominally as representative for the Parochial Church Council, was much appreciated and will be greatly missed; his contributions were always informed and valuable, his manner infallibly courteous. Sue’s enthusiasm and dedication have been boundless. She and Bill have been a mainstay of Polstead village life throughout the years they have lived here. The Village Hall, the Village Shop, the District Council, the Parish Council, St. Mary’s Church and Polstead’s historical records have all benefitted from their love of village life. As many of you will know, Sue has been awarded a well-deserved M.B.E. for services to the Community. We thank them both from the bottom of our hearts and wish them well in the next stage of their lives.

Over 50 individuals across Suffolk are being recognised as Lockdown Activity Heroes for their selfless dedication to support, motivate and inspire local people to be physically active during the recent lockdown. As the impact of the coronavirus pandemic forced the whole country into lockdown from 23rd March 2020, all leisure centres, gyms and fitness studios had to close their doors until further notice. As a result, instructors across the nation stepped up to ensure we continued to benefit from the positive impact of exercise and physical activity. In Suffolk many teachers, instructors and clubs took to the online world to support us to be active through the delivery of virtual workouts and socially distanced challenges. The Lockdown Activity Hero campaign led by Active Suffolk aims to give recognition to those that went above and beyond in our local communities during a challenging and uncertain time. Throughout August Active Suffolk invited the public to nominate someone they felt had gone the extra mile to support them and their families to be active during the lockdown. The stories shared with Active Suffolk have all been published as part of the My Lockdown Activity Hero campaign to showcase the hard work of some of our wellloved, local physical activity champions. Amongst the stories shared, is that of Jay Austin the owner of Just Jay Dance in Ipswich. He said: “Thank you, this means so much and has really cheered me up! There really should be more campaigns like this that give thanks and share the positive stories of those in the local community” Jay was just one of the Lockdown Activity Heroes who moved over to the virtual world to continue supporting the children that would usually attend his face to face dance classes in Ipswich. One parent said: “Jay is always thinking about how he can help others and his efforts during lockdown proved this, without a thought for himself or gaining anything from it personally (except for very happy and grateful parents and children!)He is a true lockdown activity hero!" Research carried out by Sport England during this time found that 67% of adults agreed exercise was helping them manage their physical health and 62% agreed that it was also helping to manage their mental health. The stories shared with Active Suffolk as part of the Lockdown Activity Hero campaign highlighted the positive impact that ongoing physical activity support had on our local community’s mental health, whilst also identifying ways in which these efforts prevented feelings of social isolation and loneliness. The support of the Lockdown Activity Heroes has been undeniable and the benefits to our local community is vast. As many have now reopened their doors and are working to adapt to the new normal, it is important that their efforts during this challenging period have not gone unnoticed. Septembers Community News included an article about the Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group. It rejoices in the fact that they now have eConsult available 24 hours a day. What about being able to see a GP face to face. I’ve been criticised for not having a smart phone, not wishing to use the internet, of not making my way to the closed Hadleigh surgery to read the notices posted on the windows. This was all within the first 12 weeks, starting slightly before the full lockdown when 3 groups were told to stay at home, one of those groups was the 70’s plus. So how about the Participation Group shaking things up? As I write this (14th Sept) there is a “breaking news” note on the BBC News Channel which states that “GP’s have been instructed to see patients face to face when required. Let’s have the NHS Service we’ve paid for. M J Nicholls

Hadleigh Walkers We were hoping that our October walk on the 10th would be along the Deben from Ramsholt. Unfortunately, due to Covid requirements, it transpired that we would not be able to get enough walkers on board to make it worthwhile so we have had to cancel the bus hire. Therefore, at short notice we have decided on a 7-mile circular walk from Rattlesden. We will meet at the community Centre car park just behind the Brewers (a map will be uploaded on the website nearer the time) ready for a 0930 start. Our route will be Pegg’s Farm, Drinkstone Green, Burt’s Cottage, Corner Farm, Clopton Hall, Wood Hall and back to Rattlesden. For those wanting refreshment at the end of the walk there are two choices. The Five Bells above the church has a good selection of ales and if they are not serving food themselves are happy for you to bring your own to eat in their large garden. The Brewers describes itself as a Gastro Pub and may be the choice of some. A word of caution. It seems clear that further restrictions are coming into force. At the time of writing it appears that organised sporting events such as Park Runs may be exempt, but it is not clear whether a walking group that splits into separate groups of no more than 6 may also be exempt. We will continue to monitor the situation and ask that anyone proposing to walk watches our website for updates and confirmation that we feel able (or willing) to conduct the walk or need to cancel. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. Don’t forget to bring water for during the walk. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. 35 Years on the High Street! March 2020 marked 35 years since Hadleigh Dental Surgery opened it’s doors to their first patient, and in the October (1985) I joined Mr Hems and Dawn to help build an already fast growing practice. I never imagined how busy the practice would become and how much I would enjoy dental nursing! Since then, it has grown from a single, ground floor surgery, with no reception, waiting room or office space (Mr Hems lived above and behind his surgery, and I can still smell the whiff of burnt toast and sizzling bacon as I rushed through the door at half eight in the morning!) -to a busy 5 surgery practice with 2 waiting rooms, reception area, de-con room, office space and staff area. Our practice ethos has always been to treat our patients with care and compassion, while delivering excellent duty of care and comprehensive treatments to a consistently high standard in order to maintain excellent oral and dental health. Life at Hadleigh Dental Surgery has spanned four decades! So it’s no surprise there have been many changes since the 80s days of padded shoulders and dodgy perms (and that was just the men!) The footwear alone has gone through some pretty radical changes, from black pointy heels (courtesy of ShoeSave on the High St where Kim, our first practice manager, used to work!), to today’s clinically compliant flat white clogs....and back in the day I definitely remember Dawn turning up to work after spending two months in Australia, wearing yellow espadrilles! Richard was not amused! The 90s saw many of us starting families, juggling a busy home life with an equally busy life at the practice. We have been very lucky to have had some excellent dental surgeons, hygienists, nurses and receptionists working with great loyalty over the years, many of whom are still with us! Phil Wilson who joined us back in 1990 as a VT who went on to become a partner with Richard Hems and now joint owner with Mr Singh who bought into the partnership when Richard moved on to pastures new in 2008. Emma joined us in 1996 as a fresh faced 16 year old, on the YTS, Lou (now our full time hygienist) in 1997, and Rachael Norris our lovely associate came onboard in 1998. March this year probably gave us our biggest challenge and change of circumstances when we were asked to close our doors for the first time since opening in 1985, due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19. Not being able to see and treat our equally loyal patients was very hard for all of us. Our 2 partners, Mr Wilson and Mr Singh and 3 of our nurses were able to volunteer at the UDC in Ipswich to treat patients with dental trauma or pain, and continued this over 9 weeks, up until we were allowed to re-open our doors again in Hadleigh. It was down to the partners’ excellent preparation and sourcing all the essential equipment which was required, in order for us to re-open on June 8th, the date the government gave us only the week before! A huge effort and amount of preparation took place at the practice, including ceiling ventilation systems and provision of powered air respirators for dentists and nurses with full PPE, all to ensure both patients and staff were protected as best as possible whilst in the clinical environment. I don’t think there can be many people who can say they have worked for the same company for 35 years and enjoyed it so much. I have made so many friends at HDS over the years, not just staff but patients too, and will always be forever grateful for that. I would personally like to thank Phil Wilson and Gurps Singh (and of course Richard Hems who had no idea what he was getting himself in to, employing me as a spirited 19 year old all those years ago!) for all their support through the years and continued dedication to keep Hadleigh Dental Surgery the excellent practice that it is today. I am so proud of our practice and the team I work alongside, we all work very hard to deliver an excellent service to our patients, and the lovely feedback we get from them, proves this. So we are really happy to be able to treat our patients once again in a safe and secure environment. Here’s to another 35 years on Hadleigh High Street!!

What a year it has been, or hasn’t been, depending on your outlook. The Christmas Present Trust will still operate again this year, but it will look somewhat different from previous events. For those who are new to Hadleigh and the surrounding areas, or are new to our small organisation, the aim of The Christmas Present Trust is to provide a free meal to local residents who, for whatever reason, are unable to be with family or friends on Christmas Day, and we have put on successful events for the last five years. This year, in order to maximise the number of people we can serve, and to reduce any risk of uncertainty during the pandemic, Simon and I have taken the difficult decision to continue with the event but from a distance. Having carefully considered all the possibilities, we feel that the safest way forward is to re-recruit our beautiful army of volunteers to deliver hot meals on Christmas Day to our lovely guests. We will still provide an element of Christmas cheer on the day, a doorstep carol or two, and of course a present for each guest, but that way we are keeping everybody safe. We will also ensure that the meal arrives in a robust container that can be re-used and, whilst we recognise that this is not the same as a full celebratory meal and entertainment in The Ansell Centre, we look forward to next year when we hope that the horrors of 2020 will seem like a distant memory. We will be contacting all those who may benefit by the end of October and welcome suggestions for any new guests. (You can nominate yourself!) At present, it is difficult to work out whether there will be an increase in uptake this year, but if there are travel restrictions, this may well be the case. We welcome anybody who may be able to spare a couple of hours on Christmas Eve (10am – 12 noon) to help with food preparation and gift wrapping, which will be Covid-safe, or on Christmas Day (12 noon – 1.30pm) to ensure that all deliveries are made in a timely fashion. The Hadleigh High Street has been a topic of conversation for some time, even as far back as 1991 when first proposals were put in to make the high street a one way system. None of us expected the Covid-19 pandemic to make such an impact on our lives and many changes have had to happen to ensure we protect ourselves against this deadly virus. Babergh District Council and Suffolk Highways requested Hadleigh Town Council come up with a plan to safeguard its community against this pandemic as our pathways were deemed too narrow to protect us when the 2m distance ruling was in place. Despite no experience in these matters the Town Council did make a decision and a one way system was trialled and then subsequently removed due to many reasons. Although this is still a Babergh and Suffolk Council decision and implementing it would be their ultimate decision, we still have to come up with a plan if there is a possible second wave and just because it’s a good time to reconsider our high street and its future. However, times have changed a great deal and many Towns and Cities have to adapt to survive. The High Street shops are competing against the online shoppers and footfall in towns and cities have decreased a great deal over the last few years, not just because of this pandemic. Hadleigh Town is a beautiful place and has so much to offer and deserves to be witnessed by outsiders. We need to look at ways of encouraging people to visit, stay and buy from our local shops to support their survival. What they will not want to see is lots of shops empty, no atmosphere in the town as there will be nothing to look at and subsequently no one using the variety of food outlets we have. In other words, it’s time to look at change. Hadleigh is deserving of our High Street shops and they need support by bringing more customers to the town. Unless we take action and look at how we can improve our High Street look they will struggle to survive. Having a one way system is only one suggestion and I’m hoping more ideas and comments could bring more thoughts to be considered. The picture opposite shows a professional diagram of how a one way system could be implemented with the correct signage and without barriers. I believe we can all agree they were pretty ugly! There is nothing being considered at the moment and it’s up to you to have your voices heard. With many residents and businesses having a say we can look to build a system that works for the majority. Above is also a picture of how the High Street could look and this was created back in 1991. It could be a look that can be adopted to give a Warm Friendly Welcome to our town. Cycling Consultation – we want your views Hadleigh Town Council and Hadleigh Cycling Club are working together to look at ways to improve the infrastructure for anyone riding around Hadleigh on a bike and we would like to get your views. We are inviting anyone interested to take a ride around the town and point out the improvements they would like to see or complete an online survey. We are particularly keen to get your views on: 1. Cycle parking 2. E-bike charging points 3. Water bottle refill points 4. Potential areas for consideration as 20mph zones 5. How to promote cycling The ride-outs have been organised for Saturday, 10th October and if you would like to join us, please book via admin@hadleightowncouncil.co.uk or via phone on 01473 823884. We will meet in the Market Place and then ride in small groups, view locations and begin a discussion which will feed into the town’s Cycling Development Working Group. Clearly, we are dependent on the weather and the COVID-19 situation at the time. The ride-outs will be risk assessed and suitable measures put in place to ensure social distancing when we are not riding. If you are unable to join us but want to pass on your views or contribute to the working group, you can access the survey via www.surveymonkey.com/r/XDM8DXK The results of the survey and the feedback from the ride-outs will be considered by the working group, which will meet via Zoom for the foreseeable future. Employees visiting people’s homes, for example, tradespeople carrying out work and essential repairs in council houses, will be following strict social distancing guidelines and hand sanitisation, and may ask a few additional questions before entering customers’ homes - in order to protect both them and tenants. Babergh is also exploring ways to support our communities and businesses in Babergh over the difficult weeks ahead, in line with the package of new financial measures for individuals and businesses announced by the Chancellor (see separate article). The most important thing is that we all try to stay safe during this unprecedented time.
Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee Christmas Voucher Scheme The Committee is pleased to announce that it is hoped to continue the voucher scheme this year. However it is not possible to confirm the value of each voucher. Some funds are available already but much will depend upon the amount raised by the Christmas Appeal and this is likely to be much less than usual due to the current extraordinary business situation. However anyone who has become eligible this year is encouraged to apply before October 31st. Applicants after this date will not receive a voucher until Christmas 2021. To be eligible you must have attained the age of 70 by December 31st 2020, live in Hadleigh itself and have lived in the town for more than 6 months. Club News: During the last two months the Club has managed to hold both coffee mornings and lunch meetings although these were mainly just social occasions as they were held outside with social distancing of course. This restricts the ability to deal with Rotary business or have guest speakers but at least members were able to chat and exchange experiences of lockdown etc. Further restrictions are now in place but meetings will continue on a smaller scale with 6 members at a time meeting on a rota basis. Business is likely to be conducted by Zoom and Email. Hopefully full lockdown will not occur again although this is threatened. Readers will have noticed that the Town Map, originally provided by Rotary, situated in Magdalen Road had been in a dilapidated state for sometime and in need of replacement. In the accompanying photograph The Mayor of Hadleigh, Cllr Helen Allan, is shown with Rotary President Ian Burne, after she unveiled the new street map which was presented by Hadleigh Rotary. The former map, which had fallen off its rotten frame, was at least 20 years old, so the opportunity was taken to incorporate several new developments in the town. The map is located on the pavement outside the main car park, and will provide visitors - and residents - with guidance to enable them to explore areas of the town, and enjoy walks along the riverside or the old railway. Another feature of the map is the inclusion of Visit Hadleigh, which gives the online address for what to see and do, where to eat and where to stay in the town. After the unveiling, Helen joined us for - socially distanced - lunch at The George, the first since 10th March. The Club is still trying to help charitable causes where possible from its very limited resources and donations have recently been sent to Sue Ryder, Marie Curie Cancer Care and East Anglian Air Ambulance. At this stage it is not known whether it will be possible to hold the Christmas Collections this year but one thing is certain - there will be many changes to the normal collection procedure. The Cock Inn - Now Open! Well folks, having reopened on Friday 28th August following our closure on 20th March 2020, we were ‘over the moon’ to see so many old faces return and support their local. Of course not everyone has returned, however we were so pleased that so many of you popped in and made the place feel like the great community pub that is The Cock Inn. Welcome to Jan as our new home manager Hadleigh Nursing Home’s new manager Jan Seal brings with her more than 30 years’ experience in the care sector. She said she was delighted by the warm welcome she had received from staff, residents and their families. “It’s been a difficult time for residents and their families who could not see each other for more than three months because of the coronavirus lockdown. However, everyone has been very understanding and supportive,” she said. “Since the easing of the lockdown, our family visits in the garden have been going well and we will have plans for indoor visits, subject to government guidance, when the weather changes.” She said she was keen to get to know families really well and her door was always open for relatives to talk to her about any concerns or ideas for improving the service. Jan started her nursing career at the age of 18 and spent many years with the NHS mostly in community based roles, from community matron to out of hours coordinator working alongside the GPs covering a large area of Essex. She said: “I then went on to be the registered manager of a complex care company in Southend where I worked closely with commissioners developing bespoke packages of care for both adults and children allowing them to be supported at home. “In 2014 I went to work as a care quality facilitator working alongside the regional manager overseeing nine homes for a large company in the London area; through this I began my career in nursing home management. “I really felt that for most of the residents in nursing homes it would be the last chapter of their lives, and that if I could improve their experiences then it would be a privilege for me.” She said her vision for Hadleigh was to make the home as homely as possible, a cheerful relaxed environment where the residents could enjoy the beautiful grounds. “I hope that I can reach out to the community within Hadleigh and look at ways to enhance our residents’ experience,” she said. Running a mile in my shoes… On Sunday 4th October, I will be running a Virtual London Marathon around Hadleigh and will be joined by 26 brave friends who are each going to run one of the 26 miles with me! The London Marathon raises millions of pounds for charity each year, so its cancellation in April due to the Coronavirus, will have had a massive effect on many deserving causes, therefore entrants have been encouraged to fundraise by running a Virtual Marathon instead… I have run the London Marathon for the last three years raising over £20,000 for the Stroke Association, the National Deaf Children’s Society, Dementia UK and the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance. My chosen charities this year are the Evelina Children’s Hospital and the Bumblebee Children's Charity. My nephew's daughter, Sienna, was born with a very rare heart condition called ALCAPA. This condition meant only half of her heart was receiving oxygen. The Evelina Children's Hospital saved her life by giving her open heart surgery at 3 weeks old, when her heart was only functioning at 10%. The Evelina not only took care of Sienna but supported the whole family, in particular her parents Lindsey and Jack. She would not be here without the phenomenal treatment she received... Today, Sienna attends the Bumblebee Children's Charity to help with her developmental delay. Bumblebee is a specialist group that helps children with physical difficulties learn important life skills in a fun and stimulating environment. As a result, Sienna has grown in independence and confidence and she is making progress learning to walk unaided. I hope that the money raised by my Marathon this year will help the many families, like ours, who have children with physical difficulties and additional needs. Hadleigh & District Garden Club One of the events from our programme this year was to be a 'garden safari' where we visit the gardens of club members who are brave enough to open their gardens to the rest of us! We haven't done this for quite a few years so everyone was looking forward to it. We usually start in the late afternoon and have a list of about half a dozen places where we spend a leisurely half an hour strolling around admiring gardens of all shapes and sizes, ending up somewhere large enough for us all to gather together and enjoy something to eat and drink and have a natter as the evening draws to a close. So we were rather disappointed when circumstances meant that this year it was not to be, however one of our members had the bright idea of asking anyone who was willing to take some photos of their gardens which would then be shared with the rest of the club. This was a lovely idea for keeping in touch and one of the committee members agreed to put everything together and the photos were shared on line. There was a wide variety of gardens big and small and some beautiful individual shots of flowers and shrubs as well as the occasional family pet making the centre of interest in a landscape! If the photos are anything to go by then next year's real event should be well worth the wait. Speaking of waiting, now is the time to be thinking about planting bulbs for some early spring colour next year. Last year I tried the layering approach to planting in a tub with later flowering bulbs in the bottom layer and early ones like crocus and snowdrops at the top, the idea being that they would flower in succession. Mine didn't seem to know about this and quite a lot of them came up at the same time, nearly choking each other as they did so! So earlier in the summer I took them all out and have now planted them in separate pots in the hopes that I will have better luck next spring. Watch this space........... hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Suffolk Artlink to create Utopia alongside adults with learning disabilities A Suffolk arts charity has opened booking for a home-learning arts course for adults with learning disabilities starting this month and themed around ‘Utopia’. The year-long Brave Art courses run by Suffolk Artlink are usually delivered faceto-face in Lowestoft, Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, but have been specially adapted to be accessed from home over Zoom or by post and telephone to meet with current Government guidelines. Year 2 is now open for booking, and commences on Monday 21st September. The theme this year is Utopia, and students will be working with artists to explore different art forms, including drawing, model making, painting, poetry, sound art and animation. Project officer, Charlie Meyer, said: “We are delighted to have been able to continue providing our arts course for adults with learning disabilities without a pause since March. “We’ve made the most of Zoom, Facebook, telephone and post to keep in touch with our students, and they’ve made some incredible work together! “As social distancing continues to be necessary to keep our students safe we have adapted our delivery to ensure we continue to provide an inclusive course. “For the first time, we have divided Year 2 into two offers to make it as accessible as possible for everyone.” Through the Brave Art Course, students can join weekly online group warm ups and live creative sessions led by professional artists using Zoom. The Brave Art Club is designed for those that would prefer to be supported offline through phone calls and post. Students can choose which option suits them best. All students will receive a fun and inspiring activity pack filled with creative activities devised by professional artists. Participants will also receive arts materials and a Brave Art sketchbook. Each year consists of three terms. Term 1 will cost £80 (reduced from the face-to-face cost of £225). Suffolk Artlink hope to trial face to face sessions this term in some locations and it is their wish to return to face-to-face sessions as soon as it is safe. Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group We've been reading a lot labout working from home and loneliness lately. Social isolation is the biggest challenge remote workers are facing. The numbers working from home have increased dramatically and physical separation of colleagues has led to more people feeling disconnected from friends at work or from their company. This can lead to poor outcomes for physical and mental health. How to overcome Work from Home loneliness • Work at least one day per week outside of your home. The first step to fighting feelings of isolation is getting yourself out of your home office and out into the world. Choose a local co-working space or coffee shop to work one day a week in proximity with other people. If you have a friend who also works remotely, make arrangements to work together. The simple act of getting out of the house could help you feel like you're part of a bigger community. • Take advantage of your flexible schedule during the day. If you work alone, whether it's from home or a co-working space, take advantage of the flexibility to build in time for extra socialising. This could mean grabbing breakfast or coffee with a neighbour, spending additional time with your children before dropping them off at school or taking your dog for a walk. Make time to socialise in ways you wouldn't normally be able to do. • Make plans after work if you're feeling isolated. If you can’t spend time working or socialising with your teammates as a remote worker, make plans with friends or family members during the week if you're feeling lonelier than usual. When your office is in your home it's harder to draw lines between work and personal hours. Making plans for after-work dinner or drinks will get you out of the house and off the computer so you don't become overworked or burnt out. • Join or form a group within your organisation for regular social connection. If your company has an internal website or instant messaging for day-to-day communication, use these to join or form a group where you can communicate socially with your colleagues. Whether it's a WhatsApp group for sharing photos of your pets or a Zoom meeting for working parents, build ways to connect socially and keep in touch with your teammates when you're feeling less connected. • Use video calls to communicate with your team. For those times when you need to brainstorm, arrange a video call to communicate your ideas. Whether you're trying to explain a complicated concept or debating with your teammate, you'll quickly grow frustrated trying to communicate effectively via text. If you're already feeling lonely as a remote worker, feelings of isolation could increase if you're running up against mixed messages on a regular basis. Instead, take advantage of video calls to help you communicate more effectively. • Finally, these unique times have meant change for everyone. Never has staying connected been so important. The plan also includes defects noted by the Architects in the quinquennial inspection report received in April. We are engaged with Freeland Rees Roberts to obtain firm tenders We for the first tranche of work recommended in the report.

The lockdown has brought to the fore a number of issues regarding security and insurance so we have been addressing them with the guidance of the Diocesan secretary, and using Su olk Police recommendations. Over the past weeks the security to the roofs has been brought up to the insurance standard, a new lock will be fitted to the upper sacristy doorr.. Security bars to the sacristy windows are another requirement that we needed to address, and this has now been further investigated and approved by the PCC. With the security of the sacristy rooms in mind our friends at Felbrigg forrg ge were asked to submit ideas and they have come up with some great designs that reflect the history of the sacristy that was built in the early 1490’s when William Pykenham was rectorr.. The lower chamber is shortly to return to being the priests vestry when the o ce is moved to the Deanery towerr.. Preparation work there though slightly delayed due to the pandemic, is now proceeding. The window bars are illustrated here and larger copies are available through the o ce. The cost of each including fitting is £730 downstairs and £875 & £950 upstairs. The sacristy was built at the start of the T Tu udor period when Henry VII seized the throne after his forces defeated Richard III in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth Field in the Wars of the Roses. Parish Council The main matters discussed at the meeting of 26 August 2020 were: • Co-option Following interviews, the working group’s report had been circulated; the PC had been fortunate to have applications from some very good candidates. It was agreed to accept the working group’s recommendation that Elaine Pye should be co-opted. The Chairman said she was keen to explore how the PC might work with the other candidates in the future, for instance on working parties. • District Council report Councillor Ward confirmed that the first online Council meeting had been held in July. The Local Plan would go to the November meeting for final approval, but it could take up to a year before being finally adopted. The Government had announced new laws aimed at delivering new homes; homeowners would be able to add up to two additional storeys to their homes through a fast-track approval process. The Government had also published a Planning White Paper which proposed radical changes to the planning system. The consultation would run until the end of October. • Covid 19 Councillor Woods confirmed that posters were now displayed on the playing field and play equipment. • Marquis planning application - reconsultation At the Planning meeting held on 25 August, councillors had voted by 4 votes to 1 to continue to object to the application. Following that meeting, the Clerk had circulated a draft submission which was discussed; some amendments and additions were agreed. • Village sign – Lower Layham Several parishioners had confirmed they were prepared to make donations towards a sign; a local contractor had offered to construct the base. The most practical location for a sign in Lower Layham was felt to be adjacent to the new village bench, subject to approval from Suffolk Highways. With regard to Upper Layham, there was already an Upper Layham sign in an oak surround near the Marquis, although it was noted that this was a road sign rather than a decorative village sign. The PC was currently liaising with Suffolk Highways about suitable locations for a ‘SID’ speed device in Upper Layham and this would need to be resolved first. Councillors agreed, in principle, to support a village sign for Lower Layham, pending further information. • Street sign for Popes Green Lane The Clerk had received further information from Babergh, following the request by a parishioner for a street sign indicating Popes Green Lane. It was agreed that the Clerk would ask SCC, who had installed the sign to the Village Hall, if they would be prepared to put up a signpost. • Green Team It was agreed to hold the autumn litter pick on Saturday 31 October at 10am. The Clerk would send out a community email informing parishioners of the date and reminding them that litter pickers were available to be borrowed at any time. She would include the news that the PC had been given some free wildflower seeds if people would like to plant them around the village. • Future meetings It was agreed that PC meetings would revert to the original time of 7.30pm; meetings would continue to be held via Zoom until further notice. Parish Council welcomes new councillor We are pleased that, following a casual vacancy and recruitment process, Elaine Pye has joined the Parish Council. Elaine was brought up in a farming community in Lincolnshire and read Biological Sciences at Leicester University, following that with a PhD in Zoology from Glasgow University and then moving into a career in scientific research administration. Elaine has lived in Lower Layham for 5 years – she already works with the Green Team and participates in our annual litter picks. She is also keen on wild swimming. Layham ‘Autumn Tidy Up’ Saturday 30th October at 10am. We know that many of you who have helped before will join us again this autumn – thank you. We will also be very pleased to welcome new volunteers. If you are aware of a particular ‘tidying up job’ that needs doing, please let a member of the Parish Council know in advance so that we can get teams organised; or just turn up on the day! We can provide litter pickers, reflective jackets and refuse bags, but you will need to bring your own protective gloves please and possibly a garden tool. If you have borrowed one of our litter-
pickers please return it before the 30th or bring it along on the day. We’ll meet up at 10am on Saturday 30th October either on the playing field in Upper Layham or opposite the Queen’s Head in Lower Layham. Hope to see you then! Thank you. October services will continue to follow the same pattern, taking place in St Andrew’s on the first and third Sundays (so the 4th and 18th October) of each month, at 9.15am. Congratulations to Elaine Pye for her amazing achievement of swimming the length of Coniston Water on 5th September - five and a half miles in three and a half hours. Elaine likes to set herself a challenge, and the Coniston Water event has given a purpose to her recent training. She started open water swimming about 15 years ago and trained for an open water triathlon in a flooded ex-gravel quarry. Since moving to Layham 5 years ago she regularly swims in the Stour, from Dedham to Stratford St Mary when the temperature is above 15 Centigrade. Royalty in Layham It was a bit of a surprise to see a police car and a helicopter in a meadow near the Shelley Road whilst on the daily walk on Friday 11th September. As we neared the helicopter we realised it sported a coat of arms which included a crown – enquiries established that the Princess Royal was visiting the Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding. The report in the newspaper the next day told us that Priness Anne, who spent an hour at the centre, presented 35 year and 30 year awards to some of the longer serving volunteers, as well as certificates to riders who have been with the organisation for more than 20 years. Not the start to the Autumn term that we ever imagined but none-the-less a great first week. We can’t believe how much the children have grown. We welcome our new starters and hope they enjoy their new adventures with us. Our new term starts with settling in and getting to know one another again. We have shared some of our favourite playgroup stories and enjoyed playing with our new mud kitchen area. We still have some spaces available to join our playgroup family. We are operating a Covid safe environment following Government guidelines to ensure safety of all our children and staff. We are a small, friendly, traditional playgroup set in a beautiful rural location. The village playground is a short walk up the lane where we are able to explore our senses in the natural environment. We cater for children age 2-4 years and provide activities and experiences to cover the areas as set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Benton Street Traffic Management Scheme Trial Since being elected in 2017, I have been working with SCC Highways officers on plans to improve the safety of pedestrians and other road users along Benton Street. Scores of vehicles mount and drive along the pavements daily putting footway users at risk of harm and this needs to be addressed. We have looked at alternative methods of better managing traffic along this road and considering the subsequent effects. This has been an incredibly challenging project due to my having a very limited local highways budget (LHB) to work with (<£50k). I would suggest that had there been an obvious solution to this issue, it would have been installed already. Alterations to the current road layout will most likely have subsequent drawbacks. I therefore carried out a great deal of public consultation and considered in-depth the feedback received. It is important to have a consensus for the chosen option and late last year the Town Council gave me their unanimous support in taking this project forward. Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic caused a delay, but in May I encouraged the SCC officers to resume the task so that measures could be installed and tested for success within this council’ term. I am delighted to report that it is now back on track. Residents of Benton Street, Cranworth Road and Ravens Way have been informed of the proposed changes and invited to comment on them. Feedback will be compiled so that a report can be written for the consideration of Cllr Andrew Reid, Cabinet Member for Highways, for his approval. Hopefully, later this year we might see something the measures installed, and the trial begin. Once installed its success will be measured by using the same data capture camera system first employed at the start of this project confirming that vehicle incursions on the pavements is reduced. What is being done? - The option chosen rearranges on-street parking along the road by lengthening parking restrictions at critical pinch-points where the road narrows. Some on-street parking will be removed thus giving drivers improved vision of oncoming traffic and alleviating potential confrontations. I have every confidence that these measures will work resulting in fewer vehicle incursions on the footpaths, but it has been suggested that this may result in increased traffic speeds. If this happens then other measures including pavement buildouts, could be experimented with during the trial. Unfortunately, currently I do not have the funds to replace the lost parking spaces, but this would be a future stage in the overall project. As a temporary solution though, HUFC has offered the use of its ground’s car park for off-road parking which has the advantage of being monitored by CCTV. Lowestoft Third Crossing officially named as project is given final green light Suffolk’s Cabinet has unanimously approved the building of the Lake Lothing Third Crossing in Lowestoft, now officially named as Gull Wing by children from Somerleyton Primary School. The bridge will be Suffolk’s most significant infrastructure development in recent memory and one of its most visually iconic. It sits alongside several integral projects to transform Lowestoft in the coming years, showing that the area is well and truly open for business. With no unforeseen delays, construction work is planned to begin in Spring 2021, with a target of Summer 2023 for the Gull Wing to officially open. County Council unable to support plans for Sizewell C In September Suffolk CC made it clear that it cannot support EDF Energy’s plans for Sizewell C in their current form. In a report with accompanying supporting documents, SCC’s Cabinet expressed significant concerns regarding transport impacts, site design and the environmental impact on the Suffolk coast which remain unanswered by EDF Energy. The Council’s position will be shared with the Government’s Planning Inspectorate which is overseeing the process for this proposed development. SCC has always supported the principle of a new nuclear power station at Sizewell and recognises that Sizewell C would offer an important contribution to the national energy strategy. The council would also welcome the benefits of new jobs and skills. However, it cannot support the current proposals presented by EDF Energy as they currently stand. The council does not support EDF Energy’s proposed transport strategy as it remains predominantly lorry-based and in the council’s view is unsustainable. The authority strongly believes that an increased proportion of rail and sea transport is reasonably achievable and in its current form, the transport impacts on Suffolk’s highway network are unacceptable. Talking Energy We’ve had a fine summer here in the East and we are now heading towards the winter months. Before we all rush to crank up the wall stat we should remember that our energy use comes at a price, for us and for the environment. With a little thought we can help ourselves to save on those nasty energy bills and at the same time do our bit to combat global climate change. Here are a few simple things that we can all do to making savings this winter. Quick Wins - Controlling the temperature inside your home is critical to good energy efficiency. Limit the wall stat to between 19-21 degrees and if your feeling the cold then consider wearing an extra layer. Check windows and doors for drafts and for a few pounds you can install draft excluder tape. Radiator Temperature Valves (TRVs) allow you to control the temperature in each room and so don’t waste money heating rooms that you do not use. Turn them down. As the nights get darker, replace all your lights with LEDs. Now widely available, they offer some excellent solutions and best of all they use a fraction of the energy and so will help to lower your electric bill. Change your Energy Supplier - Switching supplier sounds like hard work! But in reality, the process is made very easy these days and there are even dedicated ‘switching’ companies that will help. Switchers can save on average £130 on an annual dual-fuel bill so it is definitely worth a look. The ‘big six’ energy companies tend to have similar prices, but offer short term deals to attract new custom. But the most exciting development in recent years is the growth in smaller, ‘green’ energy suppliers. These also offer some good deals and the energy that they supply comes from 100% renewable sources such as; wind, solar, hydro, tidal, geothermal and biomass. These renewable sources are key to maintaining a sustainable level of energy and they help to protect the planet from climate change. Government Green Home Grant - One of the best ways to save energy is to prevent heat loss and this is done by having good home insulation. The Governments latest Green Home Grant scheme is offering £5,000 worth of vouchers for home insulation projects. The amount you receive, will be dependent on your personal circumstances. But it’s worth a look. And if you qualify for the above, you can also apply for a second lot of vouchers to complete draught proofing, replacing single glazing, heating controls and hot water cylinders projects. Visit Hadleigh Team Update The last six months have been challenging for us all and as we learn to adapt to change, the Visit Hadleigh Team wanted to take this opportunity to update you on what we have been doing for Hadleigh… In May we raised funding for and put up nearly 80 hanging baskets along the High Street which have looked particularly splendid throughout the summer; we have opened a weekend “pop-up” Visitor Information within The Letting Shop in the Market Place; we were instrumental in organizing a 16 Page “pull out” feature on Hadleigh in the East Anglian Daily Times and also ran a second full page advert promoting our High Street shops. We have continued to update and improve the Visit Hadleigh Suffolk website and recently employed a new website manager, Ben Land from Ben Land Media who has some great ideas to help us develop the website further… Along with our guided walks, we participated in the National Heritage Festival with “Trees in Art in Hadleigh” and offered free “Walking with Trees” guided walks. We also look after and maintain the Cedric Morris Gardens in Magdalen Road and the Market Place gardens and work closely with many other community groups. All of these activities are carried out by Hadleigh based volunteers and we rely on the generosity of local businesses to enable the website to continue as a valuable resource in reaching and encouraging people to visit our historic town. I guess we are all having to get used to the new “normal” and of course there is still much uncertainty of what the future holds. Our families in Belarus continue to maintain contact with us and despite all of the problems they are experiencing, always their first question is how is everybody in England, how are the families who have hosted out children? Please give them our best wishes and tell them we are thinking of them. We may not have been able to bring the children for the Summer visit this year but we are still working hard at fundraising to enable us to bring a group next summer. Inevitably with the travel industry being hit so hard in the last months costs will rise so we need to make sure we have sufficient funds in hand to cover any increases. Our Charity shop is currently our main source of income and we are really pleased to see everyone who visits us. One very important thing I would like to mention is that the situation of the shop is somewhat unusual being in a residential area and we need to take care that our neighbours are not disturbed by the activity to the shop. On more than one occasion people have attempted to access the shop via neighbours on either side of our frontage, these residential properties are in no way connected to the Charity or the shop and would ask people to follow the signage to the entrance which is through the passageway and not to cause distress to the residents. We are continuing to accept donations by appointment and where at all possible will collect from you. Although it is only September as with all retail outlets we have to turn our thoughts to our Christmas stock. This year we have already received donations of many brand new Christmas Decorations and look out for our range of LED bottle lights which will be on sale from as little as 3.99 and make very unusual and effective Christmas presents. I've just had my hours cut at work. I'd like to take on a second job, but there's nothing around. It sounds ridiculous to talk about Christmas now, but I'm already worrying! I usually start buying the kids a few presents early to spread the cost - but that's going to be impossible this year. How can I make less go further, without going into debt? I'm sorry to hear about the cut in your hours, and what it means for you. One way to stretch household finances is to shop around for the best deals on your mobile phone and broadband (depending on the details of your price plan), and on utilities, such as electricity. Installing a water meter can also sometimes bring savings. It’s worth checking your insurances and subscriptions - cancel any you don’t need and shop around for the others. It’s normally cheaper if you don’t leave it until just before the renewal date. If your children are school age there may be help available with uniforms, technology and free school meals. Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk has more details. A fall in income may mean you’re eligible for benefits, especially if you’re a parent or carer. The benefits checker, turn2us.org.uk is particularly useful. It sounds like you’re normally very organised, and I’m sure this will stand you in good stead. Make a list of the cost of your priority outgoings - such as housekeeping and essential travel - against your new income. It’s easy to slip into overdraft, or miss a payment, and it can then become more and more expensive - and stressful - to get on the right track and out of debt. Likewise, think carefully about any ‘buy now pay later’ deals - they’re not always the best option long term. If you are worried about debt, here at Citizens Advice we have specially trained advisers available to help, so please do get in touch. What a strange summer it’s been, with no visitors at the Centre except by appointment. I miss my public and sympathise with the many humans who are staying at home. There have been few dogs in, some cats, kittens and rabbits plus lots of wildlife including a young kestrel. After recuperating at SESAW, the young falcon was successfully released from the garden where it was found. Thank you to the organisers of the MEBCC Plough Day for inviting SESAW to the event last month. We sold lots of vintage items and many supporters and their dogs stopped for a socially distanced chat. Hopefully we will attend some festive events, COVID restrictions permitting, but we do need good quality gifts for Jeanette’s popular Tombola, Sheila’s ‘classy’ stall and another vintage sale. Contributions can be left at SESAW or phone 07881 785535 to arrange collection. We still cannot accept general bric a brac and household items but we can take clean, undamaged clothing for recycling. Please leave in CLEAR plastic bags only, to ensure contents are visible. Regretfully, soiled clothes and bedding have been found hidden in black plastic sacks in the past. Your continued support is really appreciated via JustGiving, the post, collection pots and occasional mystery donors. During one of my security patrols one wet evening in August, I noticed something left outside. With much effort I dragged it indoors and we discovered a kind person had left their "Rainy Day Fund" for SESAW. News from Whatfield CEVCP School It has been great to welcome pupils back to Whatfield CEVCP School this term, and to say hello to some year groups we hadn’t seen in person for some time. Parents have been really supportive of the staggered start and finish to the day and pupils have adapted really well to all the safeguards we have put in place this new term. They are now fantastic at handwashing and work very co-operatively in their separate bubbles. We have been pleased to welcome a large group of new Reception pupils to our school, and hope they will enjoy being part of the Whatfield School family. Acorns have been using the storybook ‘Here we are- notes for living on planet Earth’ by Oliver Jeffers as the basis of finding out all about looking after the world around us and they have all thoroughly enjoyed the story. In a bid to ensure we have plenty of outdoor teaching space we have installed a lovely gazebo on our field. We had a kind donation from our parents and friends group FOWS which meant that we could install the gazebo in July, ready for the new school term. Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex It has been a shortened season, but one that we have tried to make the most of and been grateful for. On the field both Saturday teams won their Atkins & Crane Cup and Plate finals in September. The 1st XI lifted the Cup against Woolpit while the 2nd XI beat Ipswich & East Suffolk in a close encounter at Chantry Park. These competitions were organised to give local teams some competitive cricket after the cancellation of the Two Counties season, and we got our rewards for fully committing to both (unlike some clubs). In the Cup final the 1st XI dismissed Woolpit for just 160, with Ben Wallis taking three wickets including the key one of Andy Northcote. Marlon Dias, Matt Kent and Josh Davey all went cheaply in Hadleigh's reply. But a 5th wicket stand of 72 between Dom Manthorpe (39 not out) and Callum Morrin (37) broke the back of the chase and Hadleigh got home by five wickets. In the Plate final the Seconds finally got the better of Ipswich & East Suffolk, after losing to them twice in the group stages. Nadie Abdul nursed his hamstring and made 84 as we posted an impressive total of 249-8. IES were 58-5 at one stage, but got back in the game until we finally came through by 14 runs. Even though the plate is a virtual one, it is still good to have won something for a team that has struggled a little in recent seasons. The player of this shortened season for the 2nds has undoubtedly been Justin Toombs, who scored 322 runs in just 8 innings with scores of 83 not out, 69 and 54, and averaged 53. The Ladies played five matches, winning two and losing three, with Harriet Pettit and Charlotte Stenning scoring most runs. There was not much game time for the Junior teams unfortunately, but we will hope for a full season in 2021. Unfortunately this will be an even quieter winter than usual at the club, as we will be unable to hold any social events (unless, as seems unlikely, restrictions on indoor gatherings change), but we thank all those who helped the club through this difficult period. Historic Church in Ipswich is looking for new partner to call it home Following the recent decision by Suffolk MIND not to reopen at Quay Place in central Ipswich, in light of the impact of COVID-19 on their business; the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) are looking for community-focussed charities and wellbeing organisations in Suffolk who may be interested in delivering services through, working out of, leasing, or using Quay Place as a base for community engagement. Also known as St. Mary at the Quay, the church has undergone a £3.6 million refurbishment, and has now been converted into a combined Heritage and Wellbeing centre, with space for events, complementary therapies, counselling, performances and business meetings. The site is deeply rooted within the historic fabric of Ipswich, and now plays a pivotal role in the redevelopment and regeneration of the waterfront area. CCT is the national charity caring for historic churches at risk and has 356 historic churches in its care across England and is the operator of the third largest heritage estate in charitable ownership in the UK. All churches in the care of the charity are listed, mostly Grade I and II*, and some are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Guy Foreman, CCT Head of Enterprise says: “Quay place is a beautiful historic building for a variety of different activities, both community-led and commercial and is well positioned at the heart of the Ipswich re-development zone to link to all of the additional services and business development that is currently taking place in the area."
