New vehicle for First Responders
Hadleigh Volunteer Community First Responder group was one of the first to be formed in Suffolk in 2003. It was a collaboration between the East Anglian Ambulance Service and St. John Ambulance; thanks to the efforts of the then Community Paramedic, Andy Barlow and Terry Powell from St. John Ambulance, Hadleigh Division. A few years later, with the change to the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust, the thriving Hadleigh CFR group purchased its first dedicated vehicle, a little black Citroen C3, which became a familiar sight around Hadleigh, saw action on over a thousand call outs, providing a timely response to 999 calls in the Town and surrounding villages. Inevitably the constant short journeys and rough terrain of country lanes and tracks took their toll. We decided to fund raise to equip ourselves with a more rugged 4wheel drive vehicle; fully expecting that it would take some time to achieve our goal but we underestimated just what a wonderful Community we live in. Stephen Laing and Kieron Ruddy quickly set up a fundraising page on social media and approached their contacts on our behalf. Meanwhile, our Co-ordinator Trevor Sheldrick, approached the local council for Grant Aid. We are grateful to Suffolk Freemasons, Hadleigh Town Council, Raydon and Layham Parish Councils, the 41 Club and many local individuals for their generosity. Ainger Holbrows Ltd. had a customer who wanted to trade in a Honda CR-V that suited our needs perfectly and proprietor Andrew Breitsprecher was keen to get involved with us and has had the vehicle sign written and will be sponsoring the vehicle in the coming years, thus ensuring that it is always ready to go swiftly to the aid of those in need around Hadleigh and surrounding villages. All we need now is some new CFR members. For more info on Community First Responders email: hadleighcfr@gmail.com or ring Trevor on 07885 635324 or visit www.eastamb.nhs.uk

Make your Will, safely, this summer At Holmes & Hills Solicitors we understand the importance of ensuring your and your loved ones’ legal interests are protected; but we also understand that you may have some concerns about coming in to an office to complete your Will. We believe it is our job to facilitate and support you in making your Will in the safest possible manner and have, following extensive review of government guidance, set out a number of ‘Safe Service Standards’ that will be in place when you come to one of our offices. Our team of expert lawyers will minimise the amount of time you have to spend in our office. Your lawyer can provide expert legal advice through telephone or video calls in order to take your instructions. This appointment will usually take around one hour. If it is necessary for you to attend the office, our lawyers will advise you of this during your call. Holmes & Hills’ Safe Service Standards include, but are not limited to: • Perspex screening in place in each reception area, receptionists wearing face shields; • Upon arrival you will be taken directly to the meeting room, to avoid sitting in a communal waiting room; • Perspex screen across the table between you and your lawyer; • Your lawyer will be wearing a full protective face shield and a fresh pair of gloves; • You will bring and use your own pen; • Appropriate social distancing will always be maintained between you and your solicitor; • The meeting room will have been fully cleaned before your arrival and will be cleaned between each appointment; • Hand sanitiser will be available in the main reception area as well as in each meeting room; • Face coverings will be provided and any client in the building must wear one unless they have a medical reason not to; • If you are unable to attend one of our offices we may be able to meet you at your home in a garden setting to comply with safe distancing to sign your Will or to witness your Will through an open window if a garden setting is unavailable. Having a valid Will remains the only way to ensure your estate is left in accordance with your wishes. With Holmes & Hills Solicitors, couples save between 16% and 21% on legal fees when making Mirror Wills at the same time. Married couples, long-term couples and civil partners all benefit from the saving. To find out more about making Wills with Holmes & Hills or our Safe Service Standards, call 01787 275275 and speak to a member of our Private Client Department

Following the long period of lock-down UK Athletics have given athletics clubs across England the green light to start training again. This is great news for Hadleigh Hares club members who have been patiently waiting to start training again and continue the supportive and friendly nature of the club. The comprehensive guidance provided by UK Athletics to all running clubs is designed to ensure the safety of club members & the general public, and complies with the current social distancing guidelines issued by the government. A key part of this guidance is the completion of risk assessments of running routes and confirmation of the health and well-being of any club member taking part in club sessions. This is partly achieved through the appointment of a Covid coordinator within the club. Once all assurance measures are in place we expect you will start to see the Hadleigh Hares running around the highways and byways within the near future, safe in the knowledge that all current guidelines are being adhered to. If you have any questions please get in touch by emailing enquiries@hadleighhares.co.uk

HEAT would like to extend their grateful thanks to everyone who used their Green Tokens to support our community allotment project and to the Co-op for their cheque of £500.00, which is very much appreciated. We are also very grateful to those who have generously donated various tools and equipment to the project. It’s been a challenging first year, however a rota of volunteers has been working hard throughout. Next year we hope to build on this by continuing to manage the allotment organically, sustainably and with sensitivity to the environment. It is hoped next year we will have the volunteer power to be more productive and to provide fresh food to those in need in our community. You don’t need an allotment to realise how dry Suffolk has been overall again this summer, our region is one of the driest in the UK. Climate change is leading to challenging fluctuations in rainfall, which together with rising temperatures and a growing population will see increased water demand in East Anglia in the near future. There are lots of ways that individuals can improve water use, here are some ideas you can implement at home: Bathroom: Showers use less water than baths, however they need to be short in order to achieve this – why not challenge family members to take a minute less in the shower? Shorter showers can also save you money on your water and energy bills. Save 6 litres of water a minute by turning off your tap while you brush your teeth. Garden: Don’t water your grass, unless you have a new lawn, it will recover -have you not noticed how green and lush it becomes as soon as we have a downpour? When buying new plants try and look out for drought tolerant varieties where possible. Invest in a water butt, mulch flower beds to help retain moisture, water evening or early morning with a watering can rather than a hose and make sure you direct the water to the roots of plants. Collect “grey water” from the washing up or shower and use this on your non edibles in the garden. Kitchen: Washing a full machine load of clothes and ensuring that your dishwasher is as full as possible will use less water and energy especially if run on an Eco setting where possible. Why not check out these sites for more water saving ideas https://www.anglianwater.co.uk/help-and-advice/save-water/ or https://waterwise.org.uk/watersworthsaving/ HEAT - hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group
Prior to September 2016 the Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce had been mothballed, out of action, due to a lack of volunteer resource to keep it operable. It was myself and a new team of volunteers that resurrected the Chamber at that time and for over 12 months we were pro-active in organising events, initiatives and collaborating with the other agencies within the town. Whilst events were supported, any real engagement and increased membership was difficult to obtain. During this time we also began reviewing the Chamber’s most effective and contemporary method of supporting businesses in the Hadleigh region, in order to add real value and gain interest. From 2018 I announced a new approach to activity that would focus on passive ‘support’ for businesses, being available but with no membership charge. We also added a new ‘touchpoint’ for engagement on Facebook, readily available to anyone and everyone. I have continued to hold the chair of the Chamber, in name only, as this has allowed me to adopt an advisory and consultative position when working with the town and district councils. It is regrettable that since 2018 the requirement for the Chamber, based on requests from local businesses, has been almost non-existent. Based on the response, I have made the decision to formally step down as chair. Having been in discussion with our treasurer and co-director, at this time to what impact this has on the Chambers status remains to be known. In closing I would like to say I have enjoyed the time working with some great people in Hadleigh, and appreciate the confidence afforded to me. Whilst the world is moving fast and change has been expedited this year by the Covid pandemic, Hadleigh retains opportunity for offering the wider world a special experience and I look forward to monitoring its progress, this time as an outsider and consumer.

Handbags From Hadleigh You may or may not remember what you were doing on Mothering Sunday this year, it feels like a lifetime away doesn’t it? But following our appeal for handbags and toiletries for the Grace Millane charity, you did not disappoint. People came with respectful social distancing and donated over 100 handbags and toiletries by the bag load. Even in difficult times, Hadleigh demonstrated its generosity of spirit, and reached out to a grieving family, whose young daughter was brutally murdered whilst on a backpacking holiday in New Zealand. And then came lockdown, and although we could house the handbags, we were unable to deliver them immediately. Once the restrictions were eased, we contacted Grace’s family again, and were humbled by the invitation to see the operation in practise. Hadleigh residents and businesses, I can assure you that your kind and thoughtful gifts have been put to good use. The items are sorted and then distributed to places of refuge where people escape from situations of domestic abuse. The family also encourage people to submit suggestions for places where such items may be of benefit so please feel free to contact us if you have any suggestions. Every bag that was donated from Hadleigh was done so out of love and respect for the cause, and we join with Grace’s mum to say ‘Thank you’. Sarah and Simon Thompson

Open Day at The Old School On Saturday 12th September, Heritage Open Day, from 10 am to 4.00 pm, the Old School on Bridge Street, will open its doors, with free entry, to a pop-up Art Exhibition, featuring stunning artworks and sculptures by local artist, Cris Coe. The purpose behind this inaugural event, is not only to exhibit Cris’s stunning artworks, but also to reveal plans to develop the venue as a cultural hub and to seek suggestions from the local community about events they would like to attend and participate in. The Old School is an integral part of Hadleigh’s academic and cultural history. It is situated on the site of the original school, Posfords Elementary, bequeathed in the will of John Alabaster in 1637, as a habitation and School House for ‘an honest, sober and sufficient man,’ as chosen by the Parson to provide a free education for poor children of Hadleigh. The current red brick, Victorian building was constructed in 1853 as the town’s Church of England Boys’ School, until it ceased operation in 1968, due to lack of space. The neighbouring Schoolmaster’s Cottage was built around 1900. The Old School was purchased from the Alabaster Trust in 1976 by international concert pianist, Thomas McIntosh, and his wife Miranda. They made the Old School their home and licensed it as a public entertainment venue, hosting concerts and art exhibitions for over 40 years. Born in Washington DC, McIntosh was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a former Director of the London Chamber Orchestra and, as such, performed at prestigious venues around the world. Whilst resident at The Old School, he founded the East Anglian Summer Music Festival in 1978 and Opera Anglia in 1989, attracting audiences to Hadleigh from far and wide. The chamber opera ‘Margaret Catchpole’ by Stephen Dodgson, with libretto by Ronald Fletcher, was premiered at the venue in 1979. The Opera tells the tragic tale about a young Suffolk woman, convicted and transported to Australia for stealing a horse in a desperate attempt to meet a young man. The new co-owner and Venue Director is Ian Grutchfield, who grew up in Hadleigh and returned to his home town in 2015, having established a highly successful career in the tv industry. “It is a dream come true and a great privilege to become the latest custodian of the Old School and to have the opportunity to revive the legacy of Thomas McIntosh, as well as creating a cultural hub to appeal to a contemporary audience.” Ian said. “We are naturally keen to actively involve the local community in developing our vision for the future of this building. Our plans are ambitious, but in this different world, we will naturally adhere to all official safety guidelines” Amongst events and activities planned from early 2021, are music concerts, poetry slams, art exhibitions, fashion styling and cabaret nights. The venue boasts exceptional acoustics, disabled access (via the driveway to Door 5) and compliance with all Health and Safety requirements are followed strictly. Public entry is via Bridge Street pavement and advance notice of special needs requirements is appreciated in advance. For further information, venue enquiries and to register for regular updates and the Old School Newsletter visit hadleigholdschool.co.uk or email hadleigholdschool@gmail.com

QD Hadleigh currently employs 44 people, including four original members of staff who have been working there since 1995. Throughout the years, QD Hadleigh has always sold the retailer’s unique offering of home, gardening, pets, furniture, Christmas, food and more – all at discounted prices. Kay Brown, store manager at QD Hadleigh, who has been with the QD Group since 1990, said: “We are delighted to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Thank you to all our amazing, loyal customers who have shopped with us during the past 25 years, and particularly those who have continued to do so during the coronavirus pandemic. 2020 has been a challenging year but we are pleased to mark this special occasion and look ahead to the future. Chris Reeve, regional operations manager for QD Group, added: “QD is a familyrun business and it is lovely to see this ethos throughout all the stores. Hadleigh is a fantastic community which has continued to support QD for 25 years. Kay and her team have done a brilliant job, not only in delivering QD’s great value over the years but also, more recently, trading in difficult circumstances caused by COVID-19. We definitely have something to celebrate! QD Stores is part of the QD Group, which is an independent, family-owned chain of High Street value retail outlets. There are currently 27 QD Stores across the country. The original concept of QD Stores’ quality discounted retailing was first established back in 1985 by the company’s CEO Nick Rubins’ father, and current Chairman, Danny Rubins. The aim was to offer customers a wide range of constantly changing, quality products at discounted prices, which led to the stores’ name QD – short for Quality Discounts. Hadleigh Walkers Our August walk round Polstead went well with 14 walkers joining the group. We found it very easy to socially distance and left the choice of venue for refreshments at the end of the walk to the individuals. Therefore, we feel that we can recommence our monthly walks provided that everyone remains personally responsible for their own safety during and getting to the walk. Our September walk on Saturday 12th will start and finish at the Hintlesham George. Plenty of parking and outside seating is available at the pub for those who will use their facilities at the end of the walk. Alternatively, there is parking across the road at the village hall/ community centre. We will depart as usual at 0930 and the route is a very pleasant and easy 9 miles. Our route will be Hill Farm, Burstall Hall, Grindle Farm, Sproughton Bridge, River Gipping, Bramford, Bullen Wood, Round Wood, Walnut Farm, Burstall, Hintlesham Church and back to the George. This is really a very pretty walk, especially along the Gipping and apart from about 200 yards contains no road work. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. Don’t forget to bring water for during the walk. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us from the website contact page or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Trees in Art 11th to 20th September 2020 Visit Hadleigh has teamed up with Hadleigh Gets Creative to organise a free and safe festival for everyone to enjoy. We warmly invite you to join the self-guided Hadleigh Tree Trail with its special map, art and children’s ‘nature hunter’ activities. We will also be hiding some special surprises in the trees! We want to inspire, cheer and relax you. The festival is part of the National Heritage ‘Hidden Nature’ events. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences. Our art activities will focus on ‘Trees in Art’. We welcome people of all ages and abilities to sketch or photograph some trees as a memory of your Tree Trail walk and as a stimulus for other creative work. A safe and comfortable spot to sit and work is around St Mary’s church and the Deanery Tower. You will find some other perfect spots along the river walk. Please bring along a cushion or folding chair, and your favourite art materials. Additionally, on Sunday 13th September at 11.00am and 2.00pm, we’ll be offering a free Walking with Trees guided walk, limited to four people per guide, and booked with The Town Guides 07748 710598. Throughout the world, trees appear in folklore, mythology and spiritual traditions. They have inspired many famous Suffolk artists and writers. Afterwards, the magic will happen: you start noticing trees everywhere - how inspiring, beautiful and important they are, as they communicate silently with our immune systems and emotions. • You can collect the Tree Trail map and other activities from Visitor Information Hosted by the Letting Department 1, Market Place IP7 5DL or download from visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk • Follow the ‘Hadleigh Gets Creative’ Facebook page for the latest details or maybe meet up with others for a Sketchathon. • We would love to exhibit your creative work inspired by the Tree Trail – contact us via info@wobbly learning.co.uk or ‘Hadleigh Gets Creative’ Facebook page.

Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson Hadleigh North Ward - August 2020 High Street Barriers - As expected, the barriers have caused a great deal of controversy and caused havoc to the surrounding streets parking as well as substantially effecting our businesses. This scheme was ill thought through combined with hasty decision making. I am delighted the HTC are willing to engage with local businesses and take on board their concerns. Unfortunately, the COVID19 has brought many unexpected changes to our lifestyles and to the way business is conducted, I comment as follows: 1 Whilst allowing businesses to open up on the street tables and chairs for refreshments etc this has negated the reason for widening the paths. I believe with strict controls of masks etc do we really need 4m wide pavements? Simply the answer is NO. 2 It would be more appropriate to consider a pedestrian walkway one-way system either side of the High Street with crossings at any point. Blue arrow markings on the pavement can direct the flow. This has worked spectacularly well in many towns eg Southwold and is visually acceptable. Recommendation – Remove all unsightly barriers, allow parking for residents, shoppers and deliveries at all times and retain one-way system. Option 2 – In the event that the HTC are not minded to remove the barriers, I would recommend that we follow Sudbury’s example of inserting potted black planters. The cost was £12,000 for 30 planters, approx. £400 per planter which were provided by Perrywood Garden Centre at Sudbury. The costs were split between Babergh and the HTC and I would be willing to purchase a planter as a donation towards costs from my Councillor locality budget. High Streets across Babergh and Mid Suffolk could benefit from almost £19m of additional income over the next 6 months, if all adults spent an extra £5 by shopping local every week. I am actively encouraging and promoting this idea. With nearly £100,000 residents across Babergh, we are encouraging adults aged over 18 to spend an extra £5, which would equate to over £500,000 per week (£12m in Babergh). Hadleigh would benefit by £50,000pw being £1.2m generated over the next six months. The figure has been announced during Shop Local Week (10-16 August) part of the government’s ‘Enjoy Summer Safely’ campaign, which aims to celebrate the importance of local and independent stores and the benefits they bring to the whole community and local economy. Throughout lockdown, Hadleigh shops have played a crucial role in supporting the local community to buy food and supplies in a safe and easy way without having to travel too far. Many businesses have diversified their offer to make shopping for essentials simple and supporting those who needed to shield. New services like deliveries, online ordering and even additional market days have provided a lifeline for many local residents. With many lockdown measures starting to ease, Shop Local Week aims to encourage people to keep visiting to their local high street and not return to precovid habits of out of town and online shopping. Please do contact me about your concerns, currently I am receiving many tree objections, so do keep them coming. Cllr Dr Siân Dawson

Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline & Charity Shop The Charity shop in Needham Market is continuing to open although on somewhat shorter hours. We are still taking donations but this must, for the time being, be by appointment only. However if you live locally I am happy to collect from you where possible. We have a really good range of clothing and shoes for adults and children, many brand new items still with original tags on. Also in stock a large range of books, jigsaw puzzles, dress jewellery and general items of interest. We work hard to make sure the shop is “Covid Safe” for all our visitors. Although our work with the children of Chernobyl has been halted for this year we are still planning the visit for 2021 and would be very grateful to receive good quality now or nearly new clothing for boys and girls aged 6 to 11 years of age. I know many of you have missed our annual Chocolate Bingo, we are already (hopefully) planning our fundraising for next year looking to return in 2021, Bingo already booked for March 13th. Also, if you are still “decluttering” and come across any Red, White & Blue or Union Jack Bunting or material you could donate we would be very grateful. Even plain red, white and blue material would be great as one of our volunteers has offered to make some bunting for us. Watch out for details of two new events planned for May and June 2021. Many thanks to all who have continued to support us during these very difficult times. Elizabeth Parker, Link Chair 07771 550868 www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk

During the Covid-19 lockdown despite Brett Valley Lodge being unable to meet the members continued to stay in touch via a weekly zoom meeting where it was decided to make a £500 charitable donation from existing funds. A shortlist of worthy causes was drawn up, sent to all members and The Bridge School received the majority of members support. Headteacher Hazel Simmons commented “We are very grateful to receive a £500 donation from Brett Valley Lodge to help motivate and inspire our very special students. Living with a disability is difficult, physically and mentally and opportunities to experience success fewer than for most able young people. This grant will enable us to create a Reward system that will spur our pupils on the maximise their abilities and achievements. The funding will be used to support materials and resources for a year of regular competitions ranging from Art to Literacy, Citizenship and Swimming, with inclusive prizes ranging from certificates and medals to learning days out and about. This is not a ‘one off’ initiative but a programme that will support our pupils to develop their skills every day”. For more information about the school visit www.thebridgeschool.org.uk

Turning Thirteen at Orchard Barn When OBee Community Interest Company was founded in 2007 we had big plans in terms of community, heritage and the environment. Now thirteen years later this is a little look at what we’ve achieved. Building community - Currently we have 43 inducted volunteers who live very locally, throughout East Anglia and wider. Orchard Barn brings people together from all walks of life. In our last accounting year volunteers clocked up a massive 1524 days. This was both behind the scenes writing funding bids, managing our accounts, and on the ground scything, composting, gardening, framing, uncovering the remains of the Long House, making items for sale and more. During 13 years we’ve worked with over 3,000 trainees and volunteers with new (but very old) construction skills such as timber framing, wattle and daub and using lime. In the last year we delivered 33 courses to a wide range of customers including Suffolk Young Carers, West Suffolk College heritage construction students, home-owners, architects and surveyors. Building environmental awareness - In the last year we received two Greenest Suffolk awards. We won the Valuing Water award and were highly commended for Sustainable Building. We hold open days with guided tours as well as wood working events. Of course this spring and early summer has been very different, but on the positive side the garden and poly-tunnel are growing fantastic vegetables and socially distanced volunteers have been able to take stock and renovate more old tools for future use by trainees and volunteers. Work has now resumed on the Long House timber frame and we hope to be able to widen up participation in the near future. If you’d like to get involved please email sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk or drop in when the gate is open. We are just SW of Mill Road in Battisford. Check out our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk

Ipswich Building Society announced as headline sponsor of new online directory Shop Suffolk Ipswich Building Society has today announced it is supporting Shop Suffolk, a new online platform encouraging consumers to find and support local businesses in the county. Launched earlier this year by digital marketer Nina Christensen, Shop Suffolk is a directory of independent, homegrown retailers with categories spanning everything from produce to homewares and fitness classes. The site can be found at www.shopsuffolk.co.uk. Nina explains “I crafted Shop Suffolk following a conversation with my parents at the outset of the pandemic, where they and their friends were trying to find which retailers remained open and where they could source home deliveries. Now, perhaps more than ever, people want to know what services are available on their doorstep. I am delighted to welcome Ipswich Building Society as headline sponsor for Shop Suffolk and to be working together championing independent retailers, supporting local businesses and benefiting the Suffolk economy.” Kesha Allen, Membership and Local Marketing Manager at Ipswich Building Society added “As a Suffolk-based mutual we know the importance of supporting independent traders not only on our high streets and thoroughfares, but also in the hidden studios and workrooms across the county. Shop Suffolk brings together these retailers in one, easy to use place and demonstrates what fantastic services are on offer.” Alongside retailer listings Shop Suffolk displays user ratings and reviews, to help highlight great service and recommendations. Retailers are urged to create their own listing on the site, with contact details, images, location map and social media links displayed at no cost. Upgraded packages, offering additional information plus announcements, deals and offers, are available from £10 per listing.

On Saturday 1/08/20 at about 10.30am I was hit by a car in Magdalen Road Hadleigh whilst on my bike. The police and ambulance service arrived, all of whom were fantastic. I do not recall too much of what happened and the events that followed. I just recall many faces of people I didn’t know looking after me. From a gent holding my head for what I was told was 45 minutes to fellow cyclists who contacted my family and looked after my bike. I cannot express my thanks enough but hope you read this just so you know your help and kindness made all the difference to me. Thank you. My cycling helmet took the full impact of my head with the car. Had I not been wearing one I would not be able to write this letter. I sustained facial injuries amongst others but I am recovering well. David Dulake
Dear Sir, I would like to say 'well done' to the new Hadleigh Town Council your social distancing measures have worked amazingly well, the High Street is now almost deserted, apart from all the ghastly safely barriers, signs, etc..it looks dreadful. Any tourists visiting the town (particularly if coming from the A12 Benton St direction) will take one look and assume it is closed for business. It is all so unsightly and unnecessary. It is not Oxford Street after all!! There is now no incentive to stop in the High Street (well you can't anyway) and see what a lovely variety of independent shops and. stores we have, apart from all the amazing history of the town. Just turn right at the end of Benton St and head straight out of the town. The shops are seeing a drop in trade and they were already struggling in these difficult times. The High Street was bustling and now it is dead. Did you speak to the traders? An opinion poll was completely ignored, why was that? Please see sense before it's too late and the High Street has closed for good. Chris Huntington

Dear Sir, I have just come back from dog walking and shopping and was appalled to see barriers effectively the length of the High Street. I have been using the High Street since prior to lockdown and have to say my post lockdown experience has been only positive. I have never felt at risk; people have been sensible, responsive, patient and considerate whilst passing or allowing others to pass. Our High Street shops had only recently reopened and consumer confidence was slowly resurfacing. In contrast, today the High Street was like a ghost town. Is this a deliberate attempt to kill off commercial business? I feel it is a complete over reaction (and late reaction) and will serve to increase public anxiety and fear and cause more businesses to fold. Businesses need positive and not extreme over-reactions from councils and government - trust the public to be sensible and do the right thing. I understand there will always be some who will complain but this is a balancing act and we need to promote business and not suffocate it. Andrea Neary
Dear Sir, The deadline for the Community News means that I am submitting this letter prior to the Hadleigh Town Council Meeting where Town Councillors will debate and decide on the barriers and one-way system in the High Street. Let me say at the outset, I have always been against the current one-way system in the High Street and I think the barriers are horrendous. I am not a Town Councillor. I am a Babergh District Councillor, and therefore not a decision maker on this issue. While Babergh was part of the original discussions, it was not the authority ultimately responsible for the decision regarding the system. Suffolk County Council is the responsible council for highways and they asked Town Council to choose how they wanted to operate the safety system. But when it came to it, Hadleigh Town Council were forced into a position where, effectively, they were given no option but to adopt the one-way system we have in place as I write this letter. I was in the meeting when Town Council members at the meeting were pressurised into a position of agreeing to a system which was against what they had democratically voted for in Council. Local authorities are expected to install safe systems for local residents in response to Covid-19, but clearly the one we have is not working. Of course, safety has to be the primary motive. But we all want our High Street to thrive as well and the one-way system and ugly barriers do not help the shopping experience. Traffic is now speeding through the one-way system, when not faced by traffic wrongly driving in the opposite direction. Even weeks after the one-way system has been in place, I saw a car being driven in the wrong direction. I have been in very frequent contact with the Town Clerk and Mayor of Hadleigh Town Council, as well as having persuaded the Leader of Babergh that this is a wrong decision (he now supports core hours closure). I favour the High Street closed for core hours (for example 10-4 or other similar hours) Monday - Saturday, importantly with easy access for disabled people, deliveries and residents. This would enable people to move freely, while keeping social distance, in the High Street and café tables placed more comfortably on the pavements, making Hadleigh a ‘destination’ and safe. We are fortunate, as unlike many towns, in Babergh we have free parking for three hours (I have fought to retain this since 2011) and our car parks are close to the High Street. This core hours closure with access idea was also what the Town Council voted for, but at a crucial meeting involving SCC Highways and other Councillors we were not allowed to pursue this option. The one-way system now in place was supported by Councillors Sian Dawson and Mick Fraser. Town Council and I were ignored, so we have the present mess. Town Council are voting on how to proceed on Thursday (their decision will be known by the time this is printed). They will then need to liaise with SCC Highways on next steps. Do not blame Town Councillors or me for the situation with the one-way system: it was not our decision. Kathryn Grandon, Babergh District Councillor for Hadleigh South

Bildeston Primary School
Member of Parliament for South Suffolk This month something should be happening that has occurred at around this time of every year of my life, and probably every year of most readers’ lifetimes – schools throwing open their doors again after the summer break. Whatever mix of emotions parents, teachers and pupils may usually feel about September’s return to the classroom, on this occasion the critical issue is fairly fundamental. Quite simply, the very act of getting all our children back into school is a national necessity of the greatest import. On top of compelling economic arguments, the main reason to welcome pupils back into the classroom is social. It is well documented that children in the most vulnerable households are most exposed to the fallout of not resuming their schooling. South Suffolk may contain many fine houses and appear prosperous on the surface for the most part, but I know from my pre-Coronavirus surgeries and visits around the patch that there are pockets of deprivation and families for whom life is a struggle. In those households, I do worry profoundly about what will have happened during lockdown without the ability for children to receive schooling, to mix with friends and thus ease some of the pressure on those looking after them. I know that some will be nervous about the public health implications of fully reopening schools. In the media we have seen a conflicting range of reports about the health risk, or otherwise, of children returning (especially in every year group). To such concerns I would make two particular points. First, there will be a price to pay if children don’t return to school. Secondly, we have real experience to draw on. Suffolk County Council have confirmed to me that since 1st June there have been no incidences of Coronavirus spreading in school/nursery settings. I was fortunate that 3 of my 4 children were in year groups that returned to school in June, and I saw the incredibly positive impact it had on them and their fellow pupils. It’s time for all our school-age children to share that experience again.

Consistency = Results 2020 has been an incredibly stressful year so far but once again it’s flown by and a new (but probably different) school year begins. Many people see September as a new beginning, more so than January as the days are still warm and long enough to motivate us. Good habits may have gone out the window during lockdown but now life is getting back to some sort of normal perhaps it’s time to deal with the damage! To be truly successful we need to make some changes. Consistency is every bit as important as willpower. Willpower is a thought process, but consistency is what makes it happen – lasting change will follow an actual change in behaviour, repeated over & over again till it becomes your normal. Then your thoughts will adjust accordingly, and you’ll have made a new habit! If you’ve tried losing weight on your own or at slimming clubs in the past but struggled, why not try a proven plan which takes out all the hard work (meal planning, calorie counting etc). THE 1:1 DIET by Cambridge Weight Plan was initially researched and formulated by doctors (35 years ago). It’s a meal replacement plan which can be tailored to individual needs, either by replacing food completely or by using one of the with-food steps. Complete nutrition is assured when followed correctly. I have over 11 years’ experience as a 1:1 DIET Consultant helping hundreds of people reduce their weight & improve their health. I will be your own private support* group during your diet journey, encourage you all the way through to goal and beyond – helping you maintain your success long term. We look forward to safely and confidently welcoming you all back... Its been a long time since we last provided content for the printed version of the Community News. It seems like years ago! Well, hopefully well are all moving forward and rebuilding our lives, work and past times as we ever so slowly regain some form of normality following the Covid-19 pandemic. It has not gone away yet and we all eagerly await a vaccine, though we have a responsibility to try to get back to something resembling our past lives and thereby add a boost to our ailing economy, its rising unemployment and general downbeat vibes. So, after having to close The Cock Inn at George Street following government instructions on the 20th March, we are reopening on Friday 28th August. We did not open on the 4th July, the first date permitted for reopening by the powers to be, because we thought that it was a little too soon for us. To open and to keep both our customers and staff safe we needed to adapt our facilities and that took time. With external areas becoming extremely important we decided to double our garden area, converting part of our under-used carpark. We needed planning consent and that took time. Having said that Babergh dealt with our application in super quick time and we thank them kindly. While The Cock Inn’s success is partly down to its general mix of customer age groups, ranging from the late teens to the not so young, we had a duty to protect the more mature members of our customer base. We took the time out to replace some of our ageing windows too and to finish off the refurbishment of the lounge bar, removing that old wall that stood in the way of one and all. The garden was completely replanted too, both the existing and the new. A huge thanks to Phil Taylor and his team at Brett Valley Landscapes who did a professional job at short notice. You will have to come along just to see the flowers and shrubs. A great job was carried out to by Kevin King too, aka K J King Metalwork. In super quick time they designed, manufactured and fitted a beautiful wrought iron fence with gates that runs along Threadneedle Street. Local boy N Kennington too who worked swiftly to paint the rear of the building, freshening up the externals to further enhance the garden areas. We were determined to use local trades people as our own way of trying to boost the local economy. If all Hadleigh residents can try to do something similar, for jobs both big and small, it will go a long way to lifting our local economic recovery. The new football season starts next month and again we will air both BT and Sky Sports. We hope to get darts back with bar billiards too, following guidelines drawn up by the local sports groups. We look forward to safely and confidently welcoming you all back. It will be good to see you all once again. The Cock Inn, 89 George Street, Hadleigh Tel 01473 879907 www.thecockinnhadleigh.co.uk

Hadleigh Nursing Home helps Hub project Jan Seal, manager of Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, handed over more than 70 “wellbeing” bags to town mayor Helen Allan at the opening of the Hub project. The High Street Hub will be a centre for volunteer support in the community during the pandemic. The wellbeing bags, which will be distributed to elderly and vulnerable people locally contained gloves, face masks, hand sanitisers and a sweet treat. Kingsley Healthcare regional operations director Georgina Johnston, who accompanied Mrs Seal at the launch, said: “As a company we have pledged to support both the hub and the local community with the provision of PPE and hand gel. “Our chef at Hadleigh Nursing Home will also be making meals for distribution in the community.” Hadleigh Nursing Home, Friars Road, Hadleigh IP7 6DF 01473 852857 www.hadleighhall.care
Hadleigh Library Bit-by-bit As I write this piece, I am sat in the library in some of our closed-to-the-public hours. I have spent the day with one of my colleagues processing books: new, reservations, select and collect orders and more and it is great to be back and to know that our library service is returning bit-by-bit to ‘normal.’ By the time this is published, it may well be that we have moved forward enough to be able to welcome you into the library building for use of even more of our services. Because the safety of our customers and staff is of the utmost importance, we are giving each step of reopening thorough thought to make sure we have the safest way to welcome you all back - and we are very much looking forward to seeing you all. Like you, we will be wearing face coverings; I don’t know about you, but I have found that this has already become quite normal and when I’m pegging mine on the line to dry after a wash, I don’t bat an eye at them at all. It has become quite a fun talking point seeing all the different patterns and prints people have opted for – I even have a jaunty little multi-coloured fish number you can look out for. To keep up to date with all of our re-opening details, keep an eye on the Suffolk libraries website: www.suffolk.libraries.co.uk or the Hadleigh library Facebook page, or you can ring us on 01473 823778.

Hadleigh South District Councillor’s Surgery These are difficult times for many people. I hope that you and your family are keeping well. In line with Government recommendations, with regret, I am cancelling my monthly surgery until further notice. I understand that you may have issues that you wish to talk to your District Councillor about. It is reducing face-toface services, such as the pop-up Customer Access point at Hadleigh library, for example, and replacing visits by telephone calls. Babergh is still available to help and support people by phone on 0300 1234000 and via its website. Employees visiting people’s homes, for example, tradespeople carrying out work and essential repairs in council houses, will be following strict social distancing guidelines and hand sanitisation, and may ask a few additional questions before entering customers’ homes - in order to protect both them and tenants. Babergh is also exploring ways to support our communities and businesses in Babergh over the difficult weeks ahead, in line with the package of new financial measures for individuals and businesses announced by the Chancellor (see separate article). The most important thing is that we all try to stay safe during this unprecedented time.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club At the moment, like many other people, I have quite a bit of spare time so I have been busy making jams, jellies, fruit vinegars and chutneys as well as fruit cheeses and butters usung fruit from the garden. This has been a really good year for soft fruit, maybe the rain we had in the autumn and winter and the warm spring has made all the difference. I have a loganberry which I grow along a warm south west facing fence and there have been pounds and pounds of berries which I have just about kept on top of with picking and freezing. A few years ago my neighbour gave me a small blackberry plant, it grows on the same fence as the loganberry and is always covered in whitefly when the flowers are setting, but I just leave them and they seem to disappear before the plant produces large fruits which crop early, usually towards the end of June or beginning of July which I had always thought was unusual for a blackberry. The fruits are longer than a normal blackberry and having watched something on gardener's world the other week I think they might be 'youngberries' which I had never heard of before then. Finding some more information on line it seems they are a cross between a blackberry and a dewberry and named after Byrnes M. Young a businessman from Louisiana USA who was interested in science and plants and who created this hybrid, so there we have it - every day's a school day as they say. Both these fruits freeze well and are so easy to grow, just cut the fruited canes down to ground level in the autumn, tie in this year's new growth, go in and make a cup of tea and wait until next summer! We have decided in view of all the uncertainty at the present moment that the garden club will not be meeting for the remainder of 2020. We hope, as far as possible, to carry over this year's programme to next year. We all look forward to meeting again in what hopefully will be a better year in 2021. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

The cancellation of this service would have put additional financial pressure on their families who would have had to arranged alternative means of transport at greater personal expense. I am delighted to report that after negotiations led by Suffolk’s Passenger Transport Team, a new arrangement has been agreed between the Chambers and Beestons bus companies. The replacement for the #971 Beestons service will be: The Beestons #84C will leave Magdalen Road at 07:10, arriving Stoke-byNayland, Bear Street at 07:40. Here students can then change on to Chambers #84 through to Colchester Schools. The return #84 trip will arrive in Stoke-byNayland in time to change back onto Beestons at 16:35, arriving back at Magdalen Road at 17:05. High Street Safer Places Measures As we came out of the lockdown there was a need for appropriate safety measures to be in place for businesses to re-open as restrictions were relaxed over time. The Government set out a number of conditions to encourage communities to begin preparing for the return of high street businesses. Town and parish councils were empowered to make small-scale temporary highways changes to enable safe social distancing. Hadleigh opted for larger and more detailed changes to the High Street that required the assistance of Suffolk, who installed the Safer Places measures consisting of the barriers with signage. Babergh co-ordinated the effort and provided the necessary Government funding for this as well as loans and grants to businesses. Unfortunately, SCC Highways had to delay the installing of the Safer Places measures until late July and by that time we had a better understanding of this coronavirus. Since the installation of the High Street measures, I have received many correspondences from residents expressing serious concerns for the businesses located there. At the Town Council’s EGM of 3rd August, I stated that I supported High Street business and had spoken to many of them about their concerns. I asked businesses to provide me data proving whether the barriers were having any negative economic impact upon them. At the time of writing, I was able to supply town councillors with feedback showing a downturn in trading, in order to help them decide the scheme’s next steps. I do accept that the one-way system is popular with a sizeable number in our community who gave support for it. I started a conversation on a local Facebook page asking for opinion on some ideas drawn up almost 30-years ago showing different High Street schemes and I was surprised at the reaction. To be clear, I do not favour a pedestrian only High Street in the current economic climate as it needs passing trade to remain vibrant. But, I have believed for some time now that we should explore having a one-way High Street with chevron parking on the east side. This could potentially free up space for seating, some pleasant street furniture, and give a more useful community area for closed-roads events. Perhaps now is the time to take to maintain this momentum and launch a consultation asking whether this is what the town wants and needs for the High Street’s future survival? Suffolk celebrates 1,000 miles of newly surfaced roads Suffolk Highways celebrated reaching its 1,000th resurfaced mile, following the County Council’s commitment to relay new road surfaces on a quarter of Suffolk’s local road network. In 2017 SCC committed to resurfacing 1,000 miles of road across the county over a 4-year period in a bid to improve the quality of roads and reduce the number of potholes forming. The commitment has also made sound financial sense as preventing the deterioration of road surfaces by resurfacing or surface dressing helps reduce the need to spend more money on reactive maintenance repairing potholes. I am pleased that Hadleigh benefited in having Benton Street, Gallows Hill, Friars Road, and Magdalen Road all resurfaced under this initiative. Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting (conducted via Zoom) on 29 July 2020 were: • District Council report Councillor Ward said the latest round of applications for discretionary business grants would close on 7 August; the whole scheme would finish at the end of August. He confirmed that Babergh would be able to balance its budget for the current year, but would need to call on reserves in order to do so. Small businesses were not eligible for discretionary grants as the criteria stated a business had to sit within the rateable value. With regard to the Marquis planning application, JW said an extension until 7 August had been granted for the applicant to submit revised information; there would then be a further consultation period. • County Council report With reference to the comprehensive COVID plan, Councillor Curran wondered whether Parish Councils would have any involvement, eg through emergency planning. The Clerk would ask Councillor Jones and report back. • Playing Field Committee The playing field and play equipment had remained open during the pandemic; the committee had taken the view that Layham was a small community and people had been observing social distancing guidelines. There were signs on the gates to the playing field and it was agreed that there should also be signs on the play equipment. With regard to the recent felling of the cricket bat willows, when the trees were felled the wind had been in the wrong direction, making it impossible to burn the trimmings as usual. This could be done in the autumn, or the wood could just be left to rot, which was good for wildlife. The annual inspection of the playing field equipment had identified some repairs were necessary (eg new swing seats). • Defibrillators A survey of all the defibrillators had been carried out. Some had required new pads and/or batteries and these had now been installed so that all equipment was up to date. • Green Team Councillor Roberts reported that parishioners were using the litter picks when out walking; she would be happy to keep the ones currently housed in the playing field shed so that people could collect them from her. She would keep a log of who had them and ensure that they were sanitised before and after use. It was agreed that it was sensible to form small groups or working parties on an ad hoc basis to carry out specific activities. A date for an autumn litter pick would be decided at the next meeting. • Finance The internal audit had once again been carried out by SALC. The auditor’s report and recommendations were noted; JC would keep councillors updated on progress. Sections 1 and 2 of the AGAR (Annual Governance & Accountability Return) were approved and signed by the Chairman and Clerk/RFO. • Section 106 The bulk of the outstanding S106 funds available had been used for the new play equipment and gates to the conservation area on the playing field, leaving a small balance which Babergh had agreed could be used to part-fund the purchase of bark chippings around the base of play equipment; the balance of the cost would be met from Playing Field funds. • Casual Vacancy There had been no request for an election and therefore the council was now free to co-opt. It was agreed that the vacancy should be advertised on the noticeboards, the website and via the community email. A working party would conduct interviews, and would meet in advance to consider applications and possibly draw up a shortlist, depending on the number of applications received. • Speeding Various options had been researched and it was agreed to purchase one SID device and two poles, subject to agreement with SCC about location(s). Councillors Curran and Paton would take this project forward. • Village sign The proposal from a parishioner was noted. It was agreed that Councillor Paton would meet the parishioner to discuss the project in more detail, and would report back to the August meeting. • Litter The Clerk had received several complaints concerning the dumping of garden waste, concrete and other rubbish in Gardener’s Close. She had contacted Flagship and requested that they make a site visit; the problem had also been reported to Babergh and an Environmental Health Officer would be writing to residents. It was agreed that the PC should keep a watching brief on this issue. • Future meeting dates It was agreed to revert to the original schedule of meeting dates for the remainder of the year: Wednesday 26 August, Wednesday 30 September, Wednesday 28 October, Wednesday 25 November. The August meeting would be at 7.30pm; a decision would be made at this meeting on the timings of future meetings. All meetings would be held via Zoom until further notice, in line with current legislation.
St. Andrew’s – your parish church Our plan for September is that services will continue to take place in St Andrew’s on the first and third Sundays (so the 6th and 20th September) of each month, at 9.15am. All service will be ‘said’ for the time being, with no singing yet permitted. The Annual Parochial Church Meeting (which should have happened in April but was delayed due to lockdown) will now take place on Wednesday 16 September at 7.30pm in Layham Village Hall, and anyone is welcome to attend. Weekly news-sheets, the Benefice Magazine and other resources are available on the benefice website: www.stmaryshadleigh.co.uk Layham Village Hall If you have walked up Church Lane over the past couple of months you will have seen men at work on the village hall. They have been replacing the cloakrooms which hall-users will know badly needed attention. Playing Field An annual inspection of the apparatus on the playing field revealed several deficiencies, some of which members of the committee have been able to fix, others requiring professional repair. Young children will appreciate the replacement of all the swing seats – the photograph shows Stuart Mann of REJB Sports Services working on the swings. Everyone will notice the ‘topping-up’ of the bark chippings below the slide and the climbing frame. Safety surfaces are very expensive – just 10cms of bark chippings have cost over £600. We have been lucky that the Parish Council still had about that sum available in the S106 fund (the fund created through contributions made by developers when they build new houses in the village) - the parish Council agreed to the cost of the bark being covered by that fund. Playing Field 120 Club The winners of the August draw were: £25 Ticket No 33 Spalding, £15 Ticket No 20 Linge Three cheers for our ‘groundsman’ We are fortunate that Graham Coleman has again taken on the task of mowing the grass during this year. One of the benefits of the unusually hot weather has been that the grass has not needed as much cutting as it has done some years. Nevertheless – a big thank you to Graham for his labours. People often comment on how attractive the field looks Prize Flower Border We didn’t have Open Gardens in Layham this year but there was one ‘front garden’ that drew the attention of all who passed it by. Photographed here is the garden of Maureen Brown of 7 Upper Street. What a pleasure it gave us all! Layham Playgroup We hope all of our families have enjoyed some much needed and well-deserved holiday time! We were incredibly lucky to have some extremely hot days to enjoy! We hope you made the most of splashing in water and eating ice lollies! How are your sunflowers? Ours have grown so much and are taller than us now! Unfortunately, we were unable to host our annual open morning this year, but we are still taking admissions, of course following Government guidance on Covid-19 to ensure safety of the children. We are a small, friendly, traditional playgroup set in a beautiful rural location. The park is a short walk up the lane where we are able to explore our senses in the natural environment. We cater for children age 2-4 years and provide activities and experiences to cover the areas as set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage. We believe children learn best in a stimulating environment where they can make their own choices. Please have a look at our website and Facebook page to see what we can offer and please do not hesitate to contact us to ask any questions. See you all soon! Take care and stay safe. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Well hello Readers, welcome to my aptly named ‘quiet room’ where I stand, all my circuits switched off, the curtains drawn and the door firmly closed. Despite all the restrictions imposed by this pandemic, the Hadleigh branch of the Ipswich Building Society has yet again done the most amazing fund raising for us. My photo shows Peta presenting Jan Derbyshire with a cheque for £3364 on August 7th. Watching eagerly is Chris Southgate, the fund raising treasurer for the Centre. None of the ladies wanted to be pictured in their face masks so the ceremony took place on the pavement outside. Such a great gift, we are truly grateful to the staff for all their efforts in these very strange times. I was woken up before this on the afternoon of July 28th for the much delayed Annual General Meeting of the Shelley Centre held here in the yard. You should have heard the CHATTER!!!! For friends who hadn’t seen each other since our lock down on March 16th there was so much catching up to do. Social distancing prevailed of course. Everyone had to bring their own chair and print off (what on earth does that mean?) their own papers but the sun shone and the premises looked fantastic. I listened hard to the business too. This is when our Chairman Jan Derbyshire gives out awards to long serving volunteers. Not many recipients were able to attend of course, but their names were mentioned. Patricia Bazeley White is pictured with her certificate for 30 years’ service......Wow, she’s been here longer than me! Lyn told us about the new arrival on the equine team, he is called Snoopy and is a little piebald fellow, here to take over from Cindy who has gone to a new home. Snoopy and Buzz (who is his field mate) were at the AGM watching from the arena. Lyn said a big thank you to her team of able bodied riders and maintenance people who have all kept the Centre and the horses in tip top condition these last silent months. Our most upsetting news is the retirement of Margaret Fowler, Vice Chairman of the Trustees and Jan Derbyshire’s right hand man in all things to do with running the centre. Most importantly for me, she is MY special instructor on two days of the week and has taken care of my riders for me whilst I give them a work out. Hers will be a hard act to follow. Naturally she was presented with cards and gifts at the meeting as my picture shows. Is Jan wiping her eye there? I know I am.

More hard decisions have had to be made about our re-opening in September. At present the premises will open on 7th, with the first week devoted to helpers only; there is much for them to learn about the new way of operating. Then, unless there are significant changes to the Covid-19 situation, only our riders who are able to mount and dismount by themselves will be able to return. The helpers will not be allowed to have that close contact required on the mounting ramp. This is very stark news. As you can imagine, BABS and I are also out of the picture for the time being. However the human team is keeping all fingers and toes crossed for better news and I’m told that the ponies are practising keeping their hooves crossed too. That must be a funny sight! Keep smiling........the team is working on being able to offer more a.s.a.p. Website: shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172

THE WORKSHOP MAGDALEN ROAD
If you were listening to Radio Suffolk on Wednesday August 5th, you may have heard Lesley Dolphin talking to Janice White, one of the ACC trustees, and Pat Crouch, one of the Cafe volunteers. Pat had kindly nominated the Memories Cafe for an award for the way they have kept all their members and volunteers connected and entertained during lockdown. We continue to invite up to five members for a cuppa in the garden each Thursday, weather permitting. We also continue to deliver over 30 newsletters and a cake to our members and volunteers each week. Wednesday Lunch Get-Together
Fifteen members of the lunch club were delighted to be able to get together again to enjoy socially distanced tea, coffee, cake and chat on 19th August. Luckily, the weather remained fine in the morning for us to use the URC garden. “Apart from visits to the hospital, this is the first time I’ve been out since March”, commented one member. It was a pleasure to see all the smiling faces (and the smiling eyes of the waitresses behind their masks). Both lunch clubs are hoping to be able to offer a similar event next month. We will be keeping in touch. Cinema – good news! All being well, we hope to open the digital cinema on Friday 18th September. It has been fantastic to have cricket back at the Meadow, and we have had an excellent month with some exciting games and lovely weather. The 1st XI are unbeaten and leading the way in their Atkins and Crane Cup group with four wins, and will be strong favourites to reach the final of the competition at Woolpit on 12th September. Dom Manthorpe has been in the runs and wickets, and pulled off a brilliant run out to seal a tight victory over East Bergholt, while Matt Kent reached his maiden club century against Copdock in a comfortable win. The only drawback has been the relative weakness of some of the opposition, culminating in Mistley being unable to field a side in the return match. This seems hard to understand after the months we spent waiting to play! The 2nd XI have also fared well, losing one narrow game to Ipswich and East Suffolk just before the rains came, but well beating Mistley and Copdock. Isaac Toombs also recorded his first 100 for Hadleigh in the heat at Copdock, the first of many we are sure! In fact we have seen four centuries in under a month for the Men's section, with Archie Wilkinson and Jamie Colcomb each reaching three figures against Sudbury as we successfully and in the end comfortably chased 278. Both men's teams could also still make their respective T20 finals. The Ladies have fitted in four games already and won two with Harriet Pettit making 30 not out against both Woolpit and Worlingworth. It is just a shame that this small slice of play will soon be over, and we will just have to hope for a full season in 2021. Gary Wiles

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029
Like many households, we have completed lots of maintenance jobs during the lockdown and social distancing. Being a rather particular cat, I have stayed away during this time. Appearances matter and a gentleman such as myself does not wish to soil his sleek black fur with specks of dirt and sawdust - unlike Little Lord Fauntleroy. The precocious chihuahua trots around, inspecting the works then trails cobwebs, dust and mud indoors. Mind you, even he succumbed to the intense heat last month. Someone found Kenneth sound asleep on a blanket, hugging Jayne’s knitted Rainbow of Hope! The end result of this activity is smart, new pens for the cats, five star accommodation for the rabbits and completely refurbished living quarters for the chickens. Double entry systems for safety, heated bedrooms and en-suite facilities for comfort. Throughout the pandemic we have been fully operational and remain ready to accept any animal, especially when the numbers increase as people return to work. Meanwhile villagers set up garden stalls in August as part of the Leavenheath Sale Trail. Several SESAW supporters seized the opportunity to raise funds and were please to meet lots of friends who usually attend our Fairs throughout the year. Although we cannot accept donated goods, we are grateful for the food left in the collection bin at our gate. Everyone at SESAW looks forward to the day we can all meet again at which point, I will make myself scarce. There is a limit to how much fuss and socialising can be tolerated by a feline like me, Ollie (the Black) Cat!
