Angel Court transformed into new homes The former Angel Court care home in Angel Street has been converted into 21 new homes, all available as social housing, helping lower income house-hunters find a home of their own. The development, funded by Babergh District Council and Homes England, is a mix of one and twobedroom flats offering affordable rent and shared ownership options to residents – as well as adding a further nine homes to Babergh’s council housing stock. Pentaco Construction, site contractors, have now presented the keys to the new council houses to Councillors David Busby and Jan Osborne, who commented “We believe everyone in Babergh should have somewhere affordable that they can call home. Social housing is required within every local community and this development meets a range of needs – whether they are adding to our 3,500 council houses across the district or helping those on lower-income to own their own property with a part-rent, part-buy option. Ultimately, these properties are more than bricks and mortar. They are now people’s homes.” Gavin Napper, Managing Director of Pentaco Construction said: “With the ever-increasing need for quality affordable housing, Pentaco are delighted to support a project in which we not only create new homes, but repurpose a derelict site to build something better. We are excited to continue our involvement with more projects that use spaces creatively to create opportunity and improve the quality of life for residents, local communities and businesses, just as we’ve helped achieve here at Angel Court.” Applications to rent the new homes have already been received via the Gateway to Homechoice choice based lettings system but anyone wishing to register an interest in one of the shared ownership properties should contact Iceni Homes on 01449 356914

Lee Sands commented “The team at Hizzy property are thrilled to win the 2021 British Property Gold award, the second time we have won it, with the first being back in 2019, we were also awarded the highest status of ‘Exceptional’ in the ‘Best Estate Agents Guide’ for 2021. These awards are the result of the teams hard work and dedication”. Their team performed outstandingly throughout the extensive judging period, which focused on customer service levels. Hizzy Property have now been shortlisted for a number of national awards which will be announced later in the year. The British Property Awards provide agents throughout the UK with an invaluable opportunity to compare the service that they provide against the service provided by their local, regional and national competition. Agents who go that extra mile and provide outstanding levels of customer service are rewarded with our accolade, which acts as a beacon to highlight these attributes to their local marketplace. The British Property Awards are one of the most inclusive estate agency awards providers as they do not charge to enter. This has enabled their award to be structured in a manner that ensures maximum participation, on average judging over 90% of agents that meet their minimum criteria on a local level. The team personally mystery shops every estate agent against a set of 25 criteria to obtain a balanced overview of their customer service levels. The judging criteria is both comprehensive and detailed exploring different mediums, scenarios and time periods to ensure that agents have been rigorously and fairly judged. Sing more, worry less The Hadleigh Choral Society are delighted to be back in rehearsals this autumn. There is plenty of research to show that singing is good for you. It can relieve stress and anxiety and help with our memory. Singing improves our posture, breathing and can even reduce snoring. However, throughout lockdown, it was the benefit of singing together with friends that was missed more than anything by the members of Hadleigh Choral Society. The social benefit is obvious and being able to blend your voice in with others gives you the confidence to really try hard and improve. Singing is a great leveller and any choir will have the most diverse range of talent and personalities within it. Being part of the choir also opens up a whole world of timeless music. We perform music from the classical repertoire, which spans from the medieval era to the present. You don’t have to know your Bach from your Beethoven; learning the background to a piece of music adds interest. Long serving members enjoy widening their knowledge further and sharing their passion for classical music with others. This all adds to our natural wellbeing, whatever our age or gender. The music and friendship lift you and can bring a certain comfort whatever life may be throwing at you at the time. Do you need to be able to sing? Well yes and some ability to read music is definitely an advantage. Most important is a commitment to practice and come along to weekly rehearsals. If the past 18 months have left you feeling anxious or lonely, or you are simply looking for a new interest, Hadleigh Choral Society could be for you. The choir meet for rehearsals on Tuesday evenings at the Ansell Centre. For more details contact our Secretary, Helen Rogerson, helenrogerson@gmail.com, telephone 07786 416034. The Society is a not for profit organisation which has been a vital part of the Hadleigh community for over 130 years. The members are very excited to be bringing a concert to you in November having missed performing live so much last year. Like many other not for profit organisations, the Society was hit hard by the pandemic and is seeking sponsors for the forthcoming concert. If you are part of a business in or around Hadleigh that appreciates the need for organisations like the Hadleigh Choral Society and the benefit it brings to the community, please get in touch with our Vice Chair, Gill Riddle, griddle1810@gmail.com, telephone 01473 670140 to discuss sponsorship opportunities. Finally, make a note on your calendar, Saturday 20th November, for our concert. Tickets will go on sale later in the autumn. We can’t wait to see you.

How likely is it that your property transaction will fall-through? It is probably more likely than you think but your choice of conveyancer can make all the difference. Give yourself the best chance of a successful completion on your home purchase or sale by working in partnership with Holmes & Hills' residential property team. Benefit from our 85% successful completion rate for property transactions, which is 18% higher than the national average.* What number of property transactions fall-through? Rightmove and other property industry commentators report that, on average across the country, approximately 28% of property transactions fall-through**. It is a much higher percentage than most buyers and sellers expect it to be. This means, subject to your choice of law firm, your transaction faces almost a 1 in 3 chance of falling through. Reduce the risk of your transaction falling-through by benefiting from a 18% higher rate of success Those using Holmes & Hills' conveyancing services benefit from a materially higher successful completion rate compared to the national average. Your transaction has an increased chance of successfully completing when Holmes & Hills is advising and representing you in your property transaction. Why do property transactions fall-through? Your transaction might fall-through for a number of reasons, most of them outside of your control. These include: your buyer finding another property; being unable to secure their mortgage; or a change in their circumstances which means they can no longer proceed with the purchase. Surprisingly, gazumping is still the most common reason for a transaction to fall-through and it has been recently reported in the last year (June 2020 to June 2021) that gazumping is to blame for 38% of failed transactions.*** Benefit from fixed fee packages As well as an increased chance of your transaction successfully completing, Holmes & Hills provides fixed-fee conveyancing quotes with no hidden charges. When you obtain conveyancing quotations from other law firms you may find charges for completing Stamp Duty Land Tax forms, dealing with lenders and leasehold fees. With Holmes & Hills, these items are included within our legal fee. We give you a simple, transparent, fixed-fee quotation. Solving problems through a proactive and pragmatic approach Holmes & Hills has a large team of experienced property lawyers who are supported by Planning Law, property litigation, agricultural and commercial specialists, meaning we resolve problems when they arise and keep transactions on track, securing a successful completion. Partner with Holmes & Hills to secure your transaction By working in partnership with our clients, local estate agents, mortgage brokers, and financial advisors, Holmes & Hills' residential property lawyers will ensure a smooth transaction, whilst protecting your legal interests. In the last 12 months, Holmes & Hills have helped over 3,500 people move home and we are ready to help you. *Holmes & Hills' successful completion rate is calculated using sample data for 541 residential property transactions started between October 2020 to December 2020 and is compared to national average successful completion rate of 72% **Rightmove / ITV - Jan / Feb 2021 ***Comparethemarket - June 2021 Holmes & Hills, Sudbury, Suffolk homes-hills.co.uk

Sibarita is a new business, based in Liston, a village in Braintree District close to Sudbury. We import and distribute a range of traditional Spanish foods from family-owned producers. Our high-quality products include cooked, preserved and dried pulses, vegetables, fruits, oils and vinegars, rice, spices and flavourings, pickles, jams and marmalades. Many of our products also make perfect gifts for food lovers and many are organic. The producers are all private, family-owned businesses totally committed to products of the highest quality, retaining traditional artisan farming and production traditions developed over generations but recognizing and adopting scientific and technological advances. Our policy is to promote a healthy diet and also to utilise seasonal produce, alongside working in the most ecologically friendly way possible. The next few weeks are supposed to be hot and sunny! Sibarita has a fantastic range of cold ‘gazpacho soups’ and wonderful salad ingredients such as piquillo peppers, white asparagus, and a wide variety of olives and pickles. If you are unsure how to make paella, why not make it easy with one our ‘Carmencita’ paella kits which include the famous paellero, perfect for a bbq!

Sibarita - Spain’s Organic Larder After its successful start, Sibarita is already looking for family-owned, artisan producers in Spain to add to its current product range, If readers of The Hadleigh Community News have any suggestions of products that they would like the team to investigate, do not hesitate to call Jack or James on 01787 323933. This is a tricky time of the year for supplies from Spain, though, because of the often quite-lengthy factory summer holiday closures. For this reason, Sibarita aims to place orders in the next week or so. Deliveries from the EU are suffering from severe shortages in the availability of transport owing to a massive shortage of HGV drivers in the UK post-Brexit and a reluctance of EU transport companies to risk delays on returning from the UK. Sibarita took a welcome break from dealing with orders online when Jack and James attended its first Farmers’ Market at Raydon, recently, generating a lot of interest in its products – the tall “Carmencita” mills of various mixes of pepper, salt and spices were a particular attraction. Alongside the national e-commerce market for Spanish foods, Sibarita believes there is room for strong local or regional suppliers that are not entirely dependent on online sales. Customers also appreciate dealing with a reasonably local business able to offer a very personal service, happy to discuss the products and provide advice. Sibarita offers the ability to collect, by appointment, and, depending on circumstances at the time, may be able to deliver the same day. With Summer now hotting up, it’s a perfect time to try Sibarita’s fantastic range of cold soups, its paella kits, its many salad products. And, if you are trying to think of a birthday gift for a foodie relative, Sibarita has lots to choose from.

I’d like to teach the world to sing It is with great pleasure that we can finally announce that the Hadleigh Community Choir will be relaunching on Thursday 9th September at the United Reformed Church, Market Place, Hadleigh, at 7:30pm. We have been unable to meet for a year and a half - it seems longer - and we are very excited that at last we can get together and sing. Of course, there are going to be differences. In order to keep everyone as safe as possible we are asking all members, old and new, to sign the following statement:- “I confirm that I am either fully vaccinated or unable to be vaccinated due to medical exemptions.” There will also be a COVID risk assessment that must be followed. If you have always wanted to sing or just fancy giving something new a try, why not come along. We will be easing back into singing with a one hour (ish) session on the 9th. No need to read music and there are no auditions. We would love to see you there. Simon Thompson, Assistant Musical Director, HCC

Cycling Club’s Gayford Flyer Sportive Hadleigh Cycling Club’s annual Gayford Flyer cycle sportive will take place on Sunday, 12th September. The deadline for signing up is MIDNIGHT, SUNDAY, 5th SEPTEMBER. There will be new signed routes of 30 and 60 miles and it is £15 to enter. This year the emphasis is on keeping riders local and exploring the quiet lanes close to the town. This is not a competitive ride: you may ride as slow as you like and enjoy our wonderful countryside! There will a burger or hot dogs for riders and live music at The George afterwards. To find out more go to www.hadleighcycling.co.uk The sportive is named after Oswald Gayford, Hadleigh’s celebrated aviator who in 1933 flew from the UK to South Africa and broke the world distance record. Pathe News filmed his celebration parade through Hadleigh. He also had a distinguished military career. The Club re-started its Junior Section with a 6-week programme at the Northern Gateway Cycle Track, Colchester and it proved be a terrific success with youngsters and adults using this brand-new facility. The course was led by Marshall Crowe with Club coaches, Simon King, Roger Kerr and Perrie Higgs. With a special mention to Benson Ho who pitched the idea to the Club. www.northerngatewaycolchester.co.uk Hadleigh Cycling Club’s “Summer of Cycling” promotion has really taken off with events and social rides galore and around 80 cyclists taking advantage of the £10 adult membership offer (up to 31/12/22). The Club runs social rides throughout the summer. Our Sunday rides usually begin at 8am (average speed 15mph) and 9.00/9.30am (12/13mph) from The George and there is a café stop. We’re also offering social rides for ladies on Wednesdays. They begin at 6pm from the High School and last 1 - 1.5 hours at the pace of the slowest rider. Both rides are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub or visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (hopefully!) Last year was a challenge for The Christmas Present Trust. Our usual Christmas Day meal at the Ansell Centre could not happen for obvious reasons and so we ended up delivering meals all around to those who would normally have come along (courtesy of a small, but fabulous, army of volunteers). The meals were favourably received but we missed the wonderful party atmosphere that the event is now renowned for. This year we are hoping to have the celebratory meal and entertainment as normal. This is conditional on the Government guidelines but we are preparing as if it will go ahead. To that end we are looking for volunteers to help with admin, preparation and delivery of the event. We are also looking at raising funds to ensure that we can deliver a free meal and entertainment on Christmas Day for anyone in Hadleigh or the surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, cannot be with family or friends. We have a stall at the Hadleigh Market (thanks to anyone who has supported us so far) and we can be found at the Ansell Centre or at 8 Edwin Panks Road on Sunday 26th September from 9am to 1pm as part of Hadleigh’s 6th Community Wide Yard Sale. If you would like to volunteer or donate, whether you’ve done so before or this is the first time, please contact us at christmas.present.trust@gmail.com or by phone to 01473 829246. Equally, if you know of someone who would benefit from this event please get in touch. Simon and Sarah Thompson, The Christmas Present Trust

September at The Cock Inn So far so good I hear most say. The pandemic seems to be under some sort of control and life is slowly returning to normal. Our customers are returning day by day and our past monthly events are starting to re-emerge. Our recent bi-weekly Sunday afternoon Soirees featuring live music have been extremely well attended and this will continue into September and onwards, with an added monthly Friday Band Night to compliment our music led activities. Sunday 12th September sees the ever popular vocalist, 3 Steps to Heaven, followed by the sweet sounding Duo, Old Skool on the 29th. To kick start our Friday night ‘Band Night’ we welcome the fantastic Suffolk band ‘Great Craic’ on the 17th September, playing renditions of Irish rock& pop. The good news is that our extremely popular ‘Buskers@ night returns on Tuesday 7th September and every first Tuesday each month thereafter. It’s well attended, so please come along early to grab the best seats. The fun starts from 7.30pm. We have asked by many customers and musicians to start a monthly ‘Open Mic’ night too, so watch this space for more news regarding this event. A full house witnessed the British & Irish Lions just lose out in the final rugby yeast in South Africa. Now the Rugby Premiership is underway with an exciting season of club rugby ahead of us. While England sadly missed out in the Euro Final, the Premiership is back live will all televised games live at The Cock Inn, including all mid-week European games in both the Europa and the Champions League. Yarn Worx, Hadleigh’s New Yarn Shop Following on from our piece in last month’s issue of the Community News we have had numerous people contact us to ask about our new knitting and crochet courses. We aim to offer a course during the week and also one at the weekend and we will run the courses as regularly as they are needed - we want EVERYONE to learn to crochet or knit! We have been working on the details of the courses which we think are going to be a huge amount of fun. Our plan is to really knock your socks off with the presentation! It is our strong belief that you learn to crochet or knit with the very best materials so you will be using the yarn we sell in the shop - the highest quality and most gorgeous yarn we have! You will choose your own colours (that’s a big part of the fun!). There will be plenty of other treats and surprises for you as well. The cost of each day course will be £99 and will include lunch and of course drinks and snacks throughout the day. We will also provide you with everything you need to switch the world off for the day and just escape to a lovely place with a group of like-minded people, learning a new skill which we all firmly believe is as good as yoga for relaxation (and doesn’t require any bendiness!) You will go at your own pace - there will be no rush – and by the end of the day, you will go away with the skills you need to finish your project. We will be running crochet and knit groups so you can come along and craft with others and we’ll also have “clinic” days when we can help you brush up on any bits and bobs you need a bit more practice with. Of course there will be time for shopping and you’ll enjoy a 10% discount on the day of your course. If this is something you would be interested in, please get in touch as we have had lots of interest so we would love to be able to book in as many courses as are needed to accommodate everyone. Domestic Science, it was called. Shown here are fourteen girls at the Council School located at the High Street end of Station Road, and now called the Hadleigh Community Primary School. This professionally taken photograph was taken at the school during September 1936. All the girls are attired in different aprons, and probably made by themselves and wearing little caps. Careful inspection of the photograph shows all the necessary utensils in preparation for a cookery lesson. Included are a small bowl, a large mixing bowl, a plate and spoon. There is also a wooden mixing spoon, pastry board and a wood rolling pin. Standing on the gas oven, the design of which some of the more senior readers will readily recognise, there is a saucepan and an equally well remembered traditional kettle. I wonder what they were going to bake on that day eighty-five years ago. We would be interested if a name could be given to any of the girls shown. Hadleigh Hares Annual Road Races There is good news for runners of all ages with the return of the Hadleigh Hares road races on Sunday 21 November. The very popular annual event was cancelled last year due to the pandemic but with some changes to the usual format to ensure Covid 19 safety measures, runners and supporters can once again enjoy this fun day out. As well as the usual 5 and 10 mile races, there will be a 2k Junior Fun Run. The 5 mile race is named after John Chisnall, a lifetime member of Hadleigh Hares, who sadly lost his battle with melanoma. We will be fundraising for Melanoma Focus, a research charity based in Cambridge. More details of the charity can be found at www.melanomafocus.org Starting at Hadleigh Football Club, races follow roads through Layham and Shelley. Apart from the opportunity to enjoy the lovely countryside, finishers will receive a beautiful, bespoke medal. The event is made possible with kind sponsorship from East of England Co-op, M Chisnall and Sons Limited, Turners Blinds and Shutters and Plant Parts Ltd. Entries open mid September with places on a first come basis. Hadleigh Hares look forward to welcoming all participants to another successful and fun filled day. United Kingdom Athletics rules apply and detailed information can be found on our website www.hadleighhares.co.uk
Hadleigh Old School becomes a Pollinator’s Paradise The art gallery will be staging ‘A Flamboyance of Flowers’ from September 16th at 5 Bridge Street in Hadleigh. The exhibition of watercolour paintings is offered for sale by artist Sandra Wall Armitage, who explained her fascination with flowers: “I have always had a passion for plants, so printed textiles seemed a natural choice for my art training. Flowers have been the main source for fabric design, and many plant forms fascinate me, including vegetables and wild flowers. The main attraction is the wonderful perennials that attract pollinators such as Oriental Poppies, Echinops (aka Globe Thistles) and Asteracea (the Daisy family). I am also drawn to spring bulbs such as Tulips. All plants with genuine wow factors will draw my attention and frequently make me itch to pick up my paintbrush! Watercolour is my main medium, ideally suited to display the detail and complexity of natural form. However, it is the magnificence and vibrancy of colour that most excites me. Bearded Iris – made famous in Hadleigh by artist and plantsman Cedric Morris – and the majesty of Cardoons are amongst my favourite subjects and since moving to Chelsworth in Suffolk, I have been mesmerised by the abundance of Hollyhocks” Sandra Wall Armitage was President of The Society of Botanical Artists from 20132018 and taught textile design on art degree courses as well as painting classes. She will be in attendance at Hadleigh Old School on Saturday 18th September to demonstrate her craft and offer advice to other watercolour artists. Entry to ‘A Flamboyance of Flowers’ is free with the gallery open form 11am-5pm each day from 16 – 26th September 2021. Closed Mon/Tues. To be invited to the opening preview night Thursday 16th at 7pm, please email hadleigholdschool@gmail.com
Live music from your local orchestra Lavenham Sinfonia, your local orchestra, is back with an evening of Mozart and Beethoven on Sunday 19th September at 7.00pm in Lavenham Church. Under the direction of its guest conductor Vicente Chavarria, Lavenham Sinfonia will play Mozart’s last and great symphony ‘the Jupiter’ . The concert warms up with more Mozart – his lively overture to Don Giovanni . After this the well known local pianist Andrew Leach joins the Sinfonia to perform Beethoven’s much loved fourth piano concerto. Covid-19 meant Lavenham Sinfonia had to cancel all its 2020 concerts and the first two planned for this year. The orchestra, led by Greg Eaton, is made up of local professional musicians and experienced amateurs. The Chairman of the orchestra, John Hooper, says that Lavenham Sinfonia is looking forward to welcoming back audiences now it is able to perform live again. Audience members will be asked to be respectful of others’ space. Buy tickets on-line via www.lavenham-sinfonia.co.uk or from the Lavenham Guildhall or Tourist Information Office or on the door. It would be appreciated if you would have the correct change when purchasing tickets or else pay by cheque. We are delighted to welcome the first of three guest conductors, Vicente Chavarria, who studied at the Royal College of Music, where he worked with all the college orchestras, assisting such conductors as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bernard Haitink and Holly Mathieson to name but a few! For those who have not yet sampled the delights of concerts in Lavenham Church, the acoustics are reckoned to be excellent and there is ample free car parking just opposite the Church. We look forward to seeing you on the 19th. www.lavenham-sinfonia.co.uk

Have you recently changed your address or telephone number? Naturally, people change address or move to a different area. This can result in the Practice database being inaccurate and means important information may not reach patients. If you have recently changed your address, or your telephone number, please inform the Hadleigh & Boxford Group Practice to ensure that this information is kept up-to date as the Practice may need to contact you urgently. You can do this by calling the Health Centre on 01473 822961 or by completing a contact details form available from Reception and on the Practice website. If you are registered for SystemOnline, the Patient Online Service, you can update your contact details on your account page. The purpose of this exercise is to make sure the Practice lists are as accurate as possible. Accurate records help you to receive the support you need from your GP. Practice lists of NHS patients with their correct, up-to-date address and contact details are essential for making sure patients can be contacted about their healthcare. Surgeries need to be able to contact their patients to provide them with test results, invite them for screening to protect against cancer for example, or to be vaccinated against infectious diseases such as flu or measles. Hospitals also rely on GP lists to ensure they can write to patients with appointments and results of tests or other information. If you are completely new to the area please register at the Practice. There is a great deal of useful information on the Practice website. The company was founded by professional actor and drama teacher Sarah Hitchin, who runs successful centres in Essex and Cambridge. After moving to Hadleigh earlier this year, she was keen to set up another school in her new hometown! Sarah said. “I am so excited to offer the children of Hadleigh the chance to come and try out an Act First Session! “As well as learning valuable drama skills, our students also gain greater confidence, improved concentration and a huge sense of pride in their accomplishments! “At Act First, we are not only passionate about acting but about stimulating young imaginations and of course, having fun! We feel that drama also plays a big part in understanding the world around us and helps with emotional and social development.” Sarah worked as a professional actor for many years in the UK and Europe after going on work in theatre-in-education and to teach at the National Theatre School. She now delivers drama to primary schools across Essex and Suffolk as well to her 150 Act First students. Act First teach a wide range of ages, with the younger pupils being whisked away on a new flying carpet adventure every week to enjoy role play games, characterisation, improvisation, and storytelling! Meanwhile, the intermediate students (6-11s) will find themselves immersed in fun, interactive activities and work towards putting on a performance for their family and friends. Senior students (12-18s) will explore a wide range of drama styles and methods in preparation for a fantastic showcase performance at the end of each term! Act First prides itself on making sessions affordable for all and offers discounts to low-income families as well as full scholarships. The Act First taster sessions will take place on Thursday 9th September at Hadleigh Town Hall www.act-first.co.uk

This advert is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis Printers, 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF
James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As GCSE and A-Level students received their results last month, my thoughts turned to how different their experience must have been to their predecessors. The impact of Covid on the learning of our pupils has been well-documented at all levels, but I’m confident that the way our vaccine roll-out has reopened society will reduce the prospect of further significant disruption to education. Many individuals are leaving education for the world of work in what must have been a very strange time to contemplate the road to a new career. I regard the creation of opportunity for young people as one of the most important functions of any thriving economy, so it must have been daunting for the latest generation of school, college and university leavers to do so with mass unemployment at one point seemingly on the cards as a result of the Covid lockdown. In fact, unemployment is now forecast to be 2 million fewer than the ONS predicted as we entered the pandemic. The number of employees on furlough has plummeted nationally, falling by 3 million since March. Far from the jobs crisis that had been feared, my experience is that employers are often struggling to find staff, and especially those with the necessary skills. As part of the South Suffolk Taskforce, I have collected evidence from many businesses since 2017 to understand the breadth of the skills challenge locally and have been working with the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce to understand what can be done to bolster the skills offer. Education is obviously a vital tool in this effort, but this is not limited to younger pupils and students. As such, I was delighted when the Lifetime Skills Guarantee was announced in September last year. This initiative provides almost 400 free qualifications for adults who have not already achieved a qualification at Level 3 (equivalent to A-levels). I will continue to work with local stakeholders to ensure that South Suffolk’s economy is as robust and thriving as possible. As lockdown eases we have a brilliant chance to reset, providing real world opportunities for business owners and employees alike.

Plastic Free Hadleigh? Many of us are aware of the ways waste plastics are damaging the natural world but feel that the problem is just too big for individuals to do much about. We can all reduce the amount of plastic we buy and throw away – reusable water bottles, buying veg unwrapped, taking our own bags to the shops, for example. But so many everyday products come in single use packaging… Plastic Free Communities is a national campaign to encourage businesses to provide plastic free alternatives and relies on ordinary people to vote for change with their cash (and contactless cards). As a community – and together with other towns across the country – we really can make a difference: business by business, Hadleigh can free itself from unnecessary single-use plastic. That sends a signal to even the biggest companies. This is why Hadleigh Environmental Action Team (HEAT) and Hadleigh Town Council are collaborating to make Hadleigh a Plastic Free Community. To do this, we need to convince local businesses to make the changes needed. Here we are very lucky that several are already on the case and we are very pleased to have six of them on board straight away: they are the very first Plastic Free Champions of Hadleigh! But the next step is the most important one: We need community organisations of all kinds to come on board, to show other businesses that there are enough Hadleigh folk concerned about plastic waste to make it good business for them to take action too. Schools, churches, sports clubs, social groups, hobby groups, local venues… any local group can sign up to the campaign. Basically this means pledging to remove at least three single use items from their operations, to help spread the message to the community, and to encourage action. So if you would like to do something to help free our planet from plastic waste why not ask your school, club or group to join? You can get help and ideas by emailing Plastic Free Hadleigh (Hadleigh.PFC@gmail.com). We’d be more than happy to meet any local organisation to talk through what it means! Bridge Street Allotment Association goes wild!
10% Discount for OAP’s
Thinking of replacement windows, doors, fascia, soffits or conservatory?
THEN CALL US FIRST!!
Wherever we garden there’s nearly always a patch that is left to do its own thing. At Bridge Street allotments we have two overgrown areas not suitable for an allotment that are overgrown with nettles, bindweed and grass. In one bed the committee originally planted a herb bed which is now overgrown and the other was failed attempt to get a wildlife bed going. Given the loss of biodiversity and the 60% fall in wildlife in the UK in the last 50 years we wanted to do something to help. Our first step was to get some advice from Gale Pryor, Green Party Hadleigh Town Councillor and keen wildlife gardener. If you are thinking of rewilding a piece of your garden her advice may be helpful. • Look at what wildlife and plants you already have. Our overgrown herb patch has lots of bees and butterflies enjoying the flowers in the brambles and herbs. So we are leaving this bed and just keeping the brambles, bindweed and nettles under control. • When creating a wildflower patch go for perennial flowers, unless your patch is bare soil, as annuals will soon get smothered by grass • Look at what is growing well in other wild areas nearby. For us Constitution Hill is an inspiration with its amazing variety of perennial wildflowers. Collect seeds from the wild when the flowers are over. • Prepare the ground by cutting back and clearing away the debris. The aim is to create a nutrient poor environment. Take out nettles! Get down to bare soil and scarify the surface. We spied comfrey in the middle of the grasses that we will try and keep. • Tread in the seeds in the autumn and add some yellow rattle seeds as these stop grasses growing • Ongoing work will be taking out nettles and other over dominant plants like dock, cutting it back once a year and removing cuttings.
Hadleigh Walkers Our September walk on Saturday 11th will start and finish at Rattlesden. We will meet at the village Pavilion a little way up Birds Green on the left (IP30 0RS). Birds Green is just past The Brewers pub on the main road into the village. OS map reference TLTL 97995903. We will depart as usual at 0930 and the route is a very pleasant 8.5 miles. Our route will be Wood Hall, Gipsy Lane, Harleston, Great Finborough, Mill Green, Cockerall’s Hall, Poystreet Green and back into Rattlesden. This is really a very pretty walk and contains very little no road work. Some of us will probably meet up at the end in the 5 Bells pub near the church which serves excellent beer but limited food (although they are happy for everyone to eat their own snacks). Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. Don’t forget to bring water for during the walk. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us from the website contact page or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Hadleigh & District Garden Club At last it has arrived!! The date for our first Garden Club meeting since all those lockdowns - Monday September 13th 7.30 pm. Our speaker will be Janet Parsons and her talk will be ‘How to look after orchids’, the entrance is £2 for members and £4 for visitors. There will be a raffle and refreshments as well as a sales table. We have a new venue - the Guild Room at the Town Hall (entrance at the back opposite the church), the evening will be much the same as before but there will extra measures in place to keep people as safe as possible, we ask people to be mindful of these on the evening. We have speakers booked for October and November and we are hopeful that in December we will be able to have our annual quiz evening, so things are certainly going in the right direction. The photo this month shows some members of the committee on a visit to Benton End house and garden. As you probably already know this house was at one time the home of Sir Cedric Morris the celebrated artist and plantsman and his partner Arthur Lett-Haines, it was here that they established the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing. Cedric was famous for breeding bearded irises naming 90 cultivars many of which carry the ‘Benton’ prefix. The house is now in the hands of the Pinchbeck Charitable Trust, they are working with The Garden Museum London to revive Benton End as a centre for artistic and horticultural study and are keen to develop links with the local community, we hope to have Lucy, our guide for the day, to come and speak about the work going on there in January of next year. If you want more information about the project then you can sign up to a newsletter at - www.bentonend.co.uk or for enquiries about the project email lucy@bentonend.co.uk In our own gardens it's time to gather seeds from annuals and perennials to store in labelled paper bags in a cool, dry place for sowing next spring. In the veg patch lift, dry and store onions and cut the fruited canes of summer- fruiting raspberries to soil level, leaving new canes thinned to 10-15cms apart. Autumn is a good time to plant perennials while the ground is still warm. Come and choose some from our stall at Toppesfield Mill House September 4th when you visit the Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

As we are nearing September, it looks as though we will be able to hold our first meeting on Tuesday 14th September at United Reform Church at 7.30 pm. The demonstrator will be Crystal Dyball, her title ‘Up the Garden Path’. Members should follow the Government’s guide lines on Covid Risk Protocol. Start-up businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk are invited to take part in Innovate Local, a pilot scheme designed to help businesses grow and reach new audiences following the impact of Covid-19. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s Innovate Local scheme offers businesses either use of a market stall in Hadleigh or Stowmarket, or working space at an innovation hub in Sudbury or Eye. The first business owners wanting to showcase their business on a market stall but worried about taking the leap took advantage of the pilot Innovate Local scheme at Hadleigh and Stowmarket last month, and received support and guidance throughout their involvement. Businesses benefitted from a free pitch at either market for a set period, mentoring and support on running a safe and successful stall, business advice and training opportunities, as well as support before and after the pilot. The Innovate Local scheme is part of the councils’ ambitions to support high streets through the Invest in Hadleigh and Vision for Stowmarket programmes to help develop vibrant towns for residents and visitors to live, work and explore. The market scheme is run in partnership with Suffolk Market Events who currently manage Hadleigh market on behalf of Babergh District Council, as well as several other markets across the county. Businesses interested in taking a stall at either Hadleigh or Stowmarket should contact Justine Paul of Suffolk Market Events: justine@suffolkmarketevents.co.uk

Moving On... Even though a large percentage of the population are now double jabbed the Covid situation is still a real concern, new variants keep rearing their heads with alarming frequency and the scientists have a real job on their hands to keep a few jumps ahead of it. It seems we’ve got to adjust to living with it for the foreseeable future. None of us could have imagined two years ago that we’d have to cope with such a traumatic event for a prolonged period of time. The pandemic has left us all reeling and weight gain has been the result for many. Some research shows that over 3 million people have gained a stone or more during this difficult time. Sadly it seems too many people don’t understand the potential consequences of being overweight, not only should they contract Covid but for long term general health. We only have one body & we really need to look after it. So again we need to look at what we can do to safeguard our own health, not just for the next few months but for the long term. The most obvious thing is to eat a nutritious diet, maintain a healthy weight & exercise regularly. Popping pills is not the answer and it’s not easy to know where to start. THE 1:1 DIET can help you rethink & retrain your eating habits. Followed properly you’ll get 100% nutrition and have loads more energy and confidence. It has several different plans (including real food if you choose) to suit just about anyone. I will help you decide which one is right for you. Crucially, you’ll have your own private support* group (me) who has the knowledge & experience (with over 12 years’ experience as a Consultant). I’ll encourage you all the way through to goal and help you maintain your success long term, call Val Lord 07519 177645 Consultations are confidential and conducted following current guidelines. *Research proves that dieters are more successful with support. Average weight loss is a stone a month*

Hadleigh’s Overlooked Heritage We may all be familiar with knowing what Listed buildings are as nationally important buildings of special architectural or historic interest, but there are so many more buildings and places within a community that define its own very specific architecture, history and heritage. The Hadleigh Society in association with the Hadleigh Town Council are compiling a Local List of non listed buildings in the town which are considered by reason of their architecture and/or historic association merit special mention and highlighting in a “Local List of Non-Designated Heritage Assets for Hadleigh.” The Hadleigh Society in its draft Local List selection contains 92 entries covering 174 individual properties and places lying in the town. In regard to the age of properties identified, as national Listing of buildings has generally concentrated on buildings built before 1840, it is not unsurprising that the majority of eligible properties identified in this Local List are post 1840, with most dating between the mid or late Victorian period, although it does include a few Georgian and earlier buildings, as well as some built in the twentieth century up to the 1970s. In compiling a Local List it is very important that the local community have their input, and so an exhibition entitled Hadleigh’s Overlooked Heritage has been arranged to be held in the Hadleigh Town Hall, Dinning Room, Market Place, Hadleigh on Friday 17 & Saturday 18 September 2021 between the hours of 10 am to 4pm each day to invite the public to comment on the Local List. The exhibition will be displaying many examples of properties which are considered to possess local heritage value, whilst asking the community to make contributions to this Local List, either by nominating properties they consider may merit inclusion, and or providing historical photographs and information to be added to currently selected properties. This opportunity for pubic involvement is also now being extended via the Society's’ website, currently under modification, to provide an interactive access to the Local List and upon which nominations of properties and comments from the community can also eventually be submitted. Details of the Local List can be found at http://hadsoc.org.uk/local-list/ The Society is hoping for a good response to their request for nominations of places and buildings in Hadleigh to be considered for the Local List. Hadleigh North Ward – August 2021 Angel Court Opening - I attended the opening of the Angel Court development which has taken some time to complete, but we are finally there!! The flats are really excellent, and I was somewhat surprised by the quality and tasteful interiors. There are 20 flats, 10 for rental and affordable housing for sale. The 2 beds are mainly sold, and many 1 bed part ownership remain. Part ownership is 30% of value and equates to a £50,000 mortgage. I highly recommend for first time buyers, or to parents who could act as guarantors, please put your name down and visit the site. The proximity to town centre, available parking, quality fittings, combined with the eau de nil colour palette and muted tone carpets are really tasteful and has resulted in a very high quality flat for a first time buyer. I really want to see these go to local families. Manor Gardens Landscaping - After completion of the Manor Gardens site, McCarthy & Stone have failed to complete the wildlife garden due to failure of their contractors to plant and maintain the gardens during the COVID pandemic. As a result, what was planted belatedly has failed to materialise and for the residents, is more than disappointing. The residents have been more than patient in view of what they have had to put up with. I contacted the Chief Executive of Mc & S last week and advised what a disgrace I thought this was. Within 24 hours the new Managing Director called, appointed a project manager to visit the site. After a polite and cordial exchange of views, a new contractor is to be appointed to once again clear the site in November, fertilise when new growth appears in March 2022 and a replanting schedule in April. It will be 18 months from this point that the maintenance will be transferred to Babergh. It seems going to the top has resulted in a very rapid result… Strategic Parking Review - Whether there is enough car parking in towns and villages will be assessed as part of a new £41,000 joint parking plan to be drawn up by two Suffolk districts. The cabinets at Babergh and Mid Suffolk district councils on Monday agreed to commit £20,500 each on developing the strategy, which will include engagement work and data collection and analysis. I have asked the Cabinet Member to be actively involved with this as it is increasingly a major problem for Hadleigh. The plan aims to assess demand for parking, its role in helping support town centres, and types of parking needed. It will look at off-street car parks, rural parking, grass verge parking and residential provision. Corks Lane - Corks Lane has not commenced works within 18 months and I deliberately requested this condition was applied to this planning application, to avoid the lengthy delays in development. The condition applies to 9th September 2021. Like all other applicants, this will have to come back to planning and has been prioritised for 21st September. I am requesting that the car park is submitted separately as the argument for including it with Corks Lane, was that the additional 4 houses on this site will only make £450/- profit and I would suggest Corks Lane ought to be sold to private developers and any sale price is profit. My concern is Babergh are not developers, and it will simply take years to complete, whereas a private sale would bring in easily excess of this amount and we maintain the car part for the town. Cycle Racks - There has been much debate about the cycle racks which I welcome, although I have suggested to Town Council more thought could be put into the visual aspect and location. Comments I have received are as follows: Greggs – cycles racks look too cluttered surrounded by a bench, parking signs and other municipal bits. Under the Banksy mural Angel St - no bikes ever use, and it obscures part of the mural and are the ugly wooden boxes required? Church site – not used and are boxes required? I endorse this and have never seen a bike in the months it has been there. Maiden Way - is a private walk-through area and is again cluttered and surrounded by cheap chairs, overall, very messy. Overall, do we need these 4’ wooden urinals, which I was advised is the reason they were selected as in Ipswich. Could Town Council pursue a less obvious obstacle cycle rack as the Co-op have done successfully outside their entrance. Very discrete, tidy and not in the public’s footpath. I am very keen to see the bike racks, but more thought should have been put into the location and visual appearance. Could I suggest we keep the racks and make them a permanent feature by securing rack into the ground and remove the wooden boxes. More comments are welcomed for feedback to the Town Council. Cllr Dr Siân Dawson sian.dawson@babergh.gov.uk M: 07931 703157
What is COP 26 and why should I care? Surely none of us can deny that we are already seeing the effects of climate change, even here in Hadleigh with multiple flooding of the river Brett last winter and as I write the United Nations have just delivered their stark climate report?
The Eight Bells, Hadleigh Traditional family run Free House Currently Open Tuesday to Sunday 12 noon - late
HAPPY HOUR Tuesday - Friday 5-7pm
It feels like a lot of discussion around climate change unfairly concentrates on what individuals can do, but COP26 is the moment that governments around the world have to step up for the sake of all our futures. What is COP 26 ? I am sure I am not alone in wondering what COP stands for. COP is an abbreviation of ‘Conference of the Parties’ to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). COPs have been taking place every year since 1995 – this year’s Glasgow summit, hosted by the UK starting on the 31st October, will be the 26th meeting which is why it’s known as COP26. The conference will be attended by delegations from every country represented at the United Nations to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change that was adopted by 196 Parties at COP 21 in Paris in 2015 with the goal to limit global warming to below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. One of the key outcomes listed by Alok Sharma MP, who is chairing the event, is to ask all UN members to commit a date to reach Net Zero. We urge you to contact our local MP James Cartlidge (james.cartlidge.mp@parliament.uk) to let him know that climate change is important to the people of Hadleigh and that now is the time for action not empty promises. We need his government to deliver a comprehensive plan to include amongst other things putting an immediate stop on all new fossil fuel exploration and bringing forward grant support for the greening of existing homes. If you are looking to address climate change and the biodiversity crisis locally, please consider joining HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Group) – we are a group of like-minded people who are “working to help people and organisations in Hadleigh to always take climate change and the resilience of the natural world into account when they make decisions”. The ragwort digging party took place in a rare moment of heat wave at the beginning of the summer holidays. Half the band of wonderful volunteers scoured the boys’ top field, and half tried to clear a pony paddock for the girls. After two hours of hard work Lyn called a halt and refreshed her victims with Pimms. A moment of camaraderie where the exhausted diggers relaxed in the shade and congratulated themselves on a hard morning’s work. Our grateful thanks go out to them. I hear there is more ragwort growing of course... My ears listen out for more gossip but I’m a bit locked up at present. Security is important obviously, but Babs and I don’t get much of a look in at present. I listen to the Maintenance Team chatting, repairing things and discussing their schedules. My photo shows a bit of a refit going on to the kitchen door!
Our fab. Fund raisers are active whilst I rest my circuits. There is to be a FUN DOG SHOW here on September 11th with lots of other attractions: A Fete, a children’s craft competition with a horse theme, a second-hand tack sale, and refreshments. Look out for the posters. Enjoy the start of term my friends, and don’t forget to keep smiling. I’m looking forward to seeing our regular riders again and meeting the all new ones. Cheerio! Letter from Layham www.layham.org
Parish Council Below are the main matters discussed at the meeting of 28 July 2021 • District Council report Babergh’s July meeting would be held at Wherstead Park on 29 July, which was large enough to allow social distancing. The Joint Local Plan hearings would resume in September, with Stage 2 hearings being held in mid-autumn as originally planned. Councillors had agreed funding for a new, more energyefficient pool water cleaning system at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury; if this proved successful in reducing annual carbon emissions, it would be rolled out to Hadleigh. Commenting on the Babergh and Mid Suffolk biodiversity and climate change plans, Cllr Woods cautioned against planting too many trees without careful consideration to ensure the right species were planted in the appropriate places; Cllr Ward said the councils were working with colleagues across the county. Councillors Woods and Roberts had been involved in the hedgerow survey carried out between 1998 and 2012 and suggested it could be useful to re-visit this. With reference to the Locality Awards funding to enable communities to improve facilities, Cllr Woods asked whether funding could be used to employ a contractor to deal with the pavement between Upper Layham and Hadleigh; Cllr Ward would suggest to SCC that the district and county could work together to find a permanent solution. • Co-option Following Cllr Paton’s resignation, the Notice of Casual Vacancy had been displayed for the requisite 14 working days, during which time 10 electors could call for an election. This had not happened, and the PC was now able to proceed with the co-option process. The Clerk would draft a flyer inviting applications, which would be delivered to all households. • Dog refuse bins The Clerk had asked Babergh whether the bins could be emptied more frequently; however, this was not possible due to limited resources. It was agreed to continue to monitor the situation to see whether an additional bin was needed in the village. • Speeding Cllr Curran’s report was noted. He wished to record his thanks to Bill Paton, an active member of the working group, who had now moved away from the village; Cllr Coleman volunteered to join the working group. Now that poles were in place the SID devices would be installed. • Playing Field Cllr Woods’ report was noted. Councillors expressed disappointment that the play equipment provided for children and families to use had been vandalised for the second time. The Chairman said she would look into what measures could be taken to combat antisocial behaviour. Layham Playgroup As we start a new year at Layham Playgroup we are keen to explore all the changes that have occurred to our garden over the summer holidays. The children helped to plant vegetables and herbs, so we are excited to see how they have grown over the summer months. We also hope to have some new outdoor equipment. We are looking forward to hearing all the news from the summer and getting to know the new children. We wish those starting school well in their next stage of their education. We still have some spaces available for the academic year September 2021 – July 2022. Open Day at Layham Mill Sunday 8 August was a special day for Layham. It is many years since Layham Mill has been open to the public and we have Ed and Glenda Hall to thank for giving local people the chance to look inside the building. The wheel was turning and the machinery open to view – there was a buzz of excitement as more and more people arrived to take advantage of the open day. Access to the first floor was up a steep stairway and

several people, having clambered up, were not very keen on getting back down! Nobody thought to count the visitors but there were a lot and most of them bought refreshments and contributed to the magnificent sum of £650 for St Andrew’s Church funds. Layham Local History Group mounted a small exhibition of what is known of the history of all four Layham mills.
Rotary Review Club Matters: Life in the Club continues to progress towards pre covid normality. All members can now be accommodated at the regular lunches and coffee meetings still outside if weather permits. The Clubs first social function for almost 2 years also took place in August. A summer lunch for members, partners and guests was hosted by Graham and Jo Parker at their lovely home. Jo and Graham prepared the main dishes whilst guests provided a selection of desserts. Some 20 diners enjoyed a super meal and good company whilst about £250 was raised for the Club's charitable fund. Jo was presented with a bouquet and and a vote of thanks given by President Ian Burne. The Club is extremely grateful to Graham and Jo for their hospitality and hard work in preparing the spread. Future Plans: Members are looking forward to arranging more social and charitable events during the coming months. Of course, Christmas is drawing ever nearer and it is hoped that the regular Christmas Collection with Father Christmas and his float will resume so please start saving your pennies.Work to get the float ready will commence soon Charitable Donations: donations have recently been made to Mercy Ships and Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding Membership: there are still only 12 members and as activities increase more help will be needed in planning and carrying out events so if you think that you can assist please get in touch - whether you would like to join as a member or just offer help at events you will be very welcome. As we say good bye to the swifts that have now flown back to Africa for the winter, we would very much like to thank the many residents of Hadleigh who joined the HEAT Swift Gang Project this year. Additional thanks also go to Hadleigh Town Council who helped to fund this project that saw 96 nest boxes installed at 24 sites across the town. We saw lots of swift activity this summer with many residents reporting ‘screaming parties’ flying low close to the nest boxes. One site even reported swifts entering the boxes. We know it can take two or three years for the swifts to find and then occupy the boxes and so we are delighted by the progress made. Thanks again for supporting this worthwhile project that will hopefully see swifts in the summer skies of Hadleigh for many years to come. For more information on all our environmental projects, please email us at hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com Mark Brennan
Dear Sir I hope people using the car park next to the old Barclays Bank have noticed how tidy it is. This work was not done by Babergh and I should like to thank the public spirited gentleman who spent several days cutting down the weeds, trimming the bushes and clearing it all away. Perhaps Babergh could follow his example and tidy up the larger car park? Jane Haylock
Dear Sir Living in the British Isles we have the delight of hearing English spoken with various accents and dialects. I grew up in the South of England but also in Wales and the Midlands providing much lovely colour from the manner in which various people spoke with me. This variety was a distinct advantage when I worked throughout various regions and particularly when abroad as I came to realise the need for all to speak distinctly and slowly so that those contacted clearly understand the message without the need for repetition. Do we have to hear the words "What did you say?" or "Can you tell me again?" I must say I cannot recall lately anyone asking me to repeat what I have told them. Unfortunately I do suffer from tinnitus, not that it is a big problem, but hearing loss is quite common in many as we age. Regrettably the BBC seem not to understand that all their presenters should speak clearly. Certainly the inordinate use of the words "You know" and "I mean" and the "Ums" and "Ahs" are often a large part of the text of so many in their discussions over the radio. It has also become common for music to be played at the same time as those who are speaking on the radio or television, which noise can and does distort what is trying to being said. With the less frequent use of masks over our mouths it is now easier to converse with one another, but nevertheless we all should adopt clearer spoken communication with one another. John Cunningham

After that very long break, like so many groups The Women’s Institute in Hadleigh is looking forward to getting together again at their monthly meetings. The view of the WI among many is that of a bunch of menopausal women making jam and knitting. Far from it! (though I guess some may be good at doing these). We hold meetings every third Tuesday at 7.30pm in the library seminar room, the next is on September 21st. There is always an invited speaker or fun activity, as well as the opportunity for making new friends and catching up with old over a cuppa. Just a few examples of past talks: ‘Can I take eggs into Britain’ - working in a British embassy overseas; Gemstones and pearls; Reflexology; Nursing in Yemen; Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds; Working as a courier bringing stem cells or bone marrow from abroad for leukaemia patients. Each talk is interesting, informative and more often than not amusing. Everyone has a voice and we look forward to welcoming new members from all age groups. (sorry gentlemen, we are the Women’s Institute, but who knows what could happen in the future. For further information, to arrange to attend a meeting, do contact Sheila Webb on sheilawebb@aol.com or telephone 01473 827554 (calls are screened so be patient – even if not at home you can still leave a message). We look forward to hearing from you
Vic’s 2021 RBL Challenge The Coronavirus, and the resulting lockdowns, have impacted on all our lives. We have had to go without seeing friends and family, adapt our shopping and travelling habits, and go without holidays. Some of us may even have put on a little extra weight. At the start of this year, being keen not to gain any more ‘lockdown tummy’, I challenged myself to run and walk 2021 miles by the end of 2021. Charities have also been affected by the pandemic, with a good number of planned events being cancelled. The Royal British Legion have been supporting Service Men and Women, Veterans and their families since 1921. With 2021 being their centenary year, it seemed fitting to use my challenge to raise money in support of the RBL. To achieve my goal, I have been running for three days out of every four, and walking on the fourth day by way of a ‘rest’. You may have seen me spluttering and gasping for breath as I slowly plod my way around Hadleigh and its outskirts. My body has often reminded me of my age and it has sometimes felt a real challenge just to get out and run. However, I am pleased to announce that I am now threequarters of the way through to achieving those 2021 miles. It is good to know that I am on the downward slope with the finishing line in sight. To make it easier to receive donations, I have set up an online fund raising page. Anyone wishing to support me and the RBL can make a donation by visiting www.justgiving.com/fundraising/victor-faccini. Donating is simple, fast and totally secure. Please also remember to select Gift Aid. If you see me out running or walking, please give me a wave and a shout. Any encouragement is very welcome and much needed. Vic Faccini

Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South Locality Budget – I am privileged to have at my disposal a Locality Budget of £8,000p.a. which I can allocate to fund projects here in Hadleigh for the benefit of the community. Locality Budgets can be used to initiate new projects; or to provide additional funding to match against already committed resources. In some cases, I could use my LB for projects outside the town where it can be demonstrated that people from Hadleigh will benefit from the project, such as sports facilities in Ipswich. New PXB with staff from Hadleigh Pool & Leisure I prefer to commit funds for tangible items of equipment rather than to transient schemes, and I am more easily persuaded in the purchasing of sports equipment. One recent example I was particularly delighted to fund at the end of the last council, was the purchase of a Pool Extraction Board (PXB) for Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. This PXB allows for the safe moving of an incapacitated swimmer by only two lifeguards. This equipment will last for many years with only the need for periodic replacement of the restraint straps for maintenance. Please contact me with any requests for assistance that I might afford through this funding. Highways works: Castle Road – This is probably the worst road surface in the town, which has been blighted with scores of defects since I was first elected in 2017. Suffolk Highways recently carried out more repairs to numerous large potholes on this road and I was glad that the works team used whatever excess material remaining to fill smaller potholes not meeting the repair criteria. However, Castle Road remains in a poor state, as a mosaic of repair patches holding together the remaining aged and crumbling original surface. It was scheduled for resurfacing not before FY 24/25, but I am delighted to report that these works have been brought forward significantly in the schedule and should now be carried out by the end of this year - weather permitting. Bridge Street Drainage Works – Bridge Street was closed for major drainage repair works. This drainage/flooding problem was ongoing and is now being addressed after £10m of additional funding was pledged by Suffolk for improved highways drainage. These extensive (and expensive) works will hopefully address the flooding issues on this road after heavy rains. Benton Street Traffic Management Safety Measures – I am still awaiting the installation commencement date from operational highways. There has been further delay in this project as the new cabinet members for Highways wished to gain a thorough understanding of this ongoing issue. I remain confident that the trial scheme will be installed by the end of this year and hope to give fuller details of it in a later editorial. Lorry Route Plan Review – Suffolk is soon to launch its technical and community led review of lorry routes in the county. It will consider new strategic roads, new Lorry Watch areas and Air Quality Management Areas in Suffolk. The technical review is currently taking place and is a strategic technical review looking at data and evidence including: collision records and traffic data; Traffic Regulation Orders for weight, width and height restrictions; the resilient road network and its strategic road network diversions as well as GPS data; the locations of building strikes; public complaints; data from Lorry Watch schemes. The community led review will seek views of our Town Council about local issues and intelligence. Information will be gathered by a survey the TC and I will then then be asked to endorse and prioritise the key issues here. Should you wish to give feedback on HGV movements in Hadleigh, then please contact the TC who is collating the response. It is interesting that currently the B1070 is designated as a local lorry access route, which is a road serving as access to locations including the Industrial Estate. Suffolk Public Sector Leaders - at the last SPSL meeting, a £6.2million commitment to helping Suffolk recover from the Covid-19 pandemic was given, combined with £3.5million already committed from September last year. This marks a £9.7m funding package from pooled business rates to help Suffolk emerge from the Covid-19 crisis. In-principal funding agreed included: • £500,000 to the Get Suffolk Reading campaign with the National Literacy Trust • £1m to address housing inequalities, poverty and homelessness • £200,000 for young people's mental health support • £400,000 support for troubled families • £500,000 for early intervention assistance and preventing crisis • £89,000 for ongoing engagement work • £1million commitment to the Haughley Junction rail upgrades • £1.05m to extend the Suffolk Inclusive Growth Investment Fund for another year Should you need to speak to me concerning an issue that affects you, then please contact me at - email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk or mick.fraser@babergh.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or Facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh, Twitter: @mick_fraser. Town Mayor’s Update The way in which the Town Council (and Babergh District Council) manage their public land in Hadleigh has been a subject of much discussion recently, issues such as how frequently the grassed areas are mown and tree management. As far as the routine maintenance of our public spaces is concerned, there are big changes in the offing. Babergh have taken all their work back in house, and will no longer contract it out. At the same time, idVerde (who were their contractors) have announced that they are withdrawing from the contract they have with the Town Council. Unlike BDC, we do not have the resources to manage these grounds directly, as we could not afford the capital costs for equipment and suchlike. So the contract, which is quite a large one, will probably be put out to tender, with the aim that the new contract is up and running in November, when idVerde’s notice period expires. The new arrangement will include improvements on what we currently have – the War Memorial will be tidied up more frequently, for instance, as a number of residents have requested, and the six bus shelters the Council owns will be more regularly looked after. There will also be more scope to manage the estate in a more environmentally friendly manner. Even under the existing contract, the use of herbicides and insecticides has not been allowed. A much sadder matter is the wonderful lime tree beside the Deanery Tower. The recent general inspection of our trees (which led to the work already done on the large willow by Toppesfield Bridge) showed that this mighty plant is infected with a fungal disease which has very seriously damaged its major structural roots. It certainly looks healthy, but this disease can cause sudden and catastrophic failure, and is widely seen as one of the most destructive preying on our trees. It is painful to have to do this, but the tree has to be felled – this has been a very sad decision (which was taken by the council on 19 Aug) but given the tree’s surroundings, the three most important and iconic buildings in Hadleigh, we can take no risks with this. And there is of course a public safety issue as well; in the event of very high winds, when failure is much more likely, we will have to consider closing areas around it to the public, until it is felled, for everybody’s safety. The arborist’s report is emphatic and admits of no doubt, and BDC’s arboricultural officer agrees with its conclusions. Another casualty has been the horse chestnut in the Health Centre Car Park, which has died of natural causes. This is one of BDC’s trees, and once it has been removed, they are looking to erect a large wooden sculpture in its place. It may well be possible that the wood for this can come from the lime tree in the Churchyard. The Council will be looking for other ideas which will mean that the timber from this beloved tree can be used in ways that will benefit our community. Frank Minns, Hadleigh Town Mayor
Lorries in Hadleigh You may have noticed that lorries use Gallows Hill, Bridge Street, High Street and Angel Street when they make deliveries to Lady Lane Industrial Estate. The reason for this is that the Lorry Route in Suffolk has this route as a designated zone distributor route. The current Lorry Route was created in 2011 and had a minor review in 2017. A full review is taking place now and the community part of the review will take place via Parish and Town Councils in the summer. We expect to receive more information at the end of August 2021. More information on the lorry route review can be found here (a map of the Lorry Routes in Suffolk is also available on that page) - https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roadsand-transport/lorry-management/lorry-route-plan-review-in-suffolk/ The Planning Committee have agreed to ask for comments and suggestions now so we can start collating the responses. Do you think that the Lorry Route should route lorries delivering to Lady Lane Industrial Estate via the A1071 to come in at the top of Lady Lane and then back out the same way or do you think the current route should stay in place? (If the Lorry Route is amended it does not stop lorries delivering to other shops and businesses within Hadleigh such as on the High Street) If you have any comments or suggestions to make or have any evidence regarding the number of lorries who use the roads mentioned above please contact the Town Clerk by email townclerk@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk or write to Town Clerk, Hadleigh Town Council, Market Place, Hadleigh, IP7 5DN.

H.A.D.S is back! Yes H.A.D.S is back, and I'll say it louder for the people at the back. H.A.D.S is back! We're so happy to be back, our production is in full steam ahead. It goes without saying the last year, and months have been extremely difficult for everyone. We've all missed seeing friends and family, the trips out that we took for granted, cinema and theatre visits. COVID has hit everyone in many ways. We're all trying to get back to normality. The H.A.D.S committee has been in regular contact to discuss how and when we can put on a new project. With social distancing rules it wasn't viable for us to do anything in 2020 taking into consideration the costs of running a show. Now the rules have been lifted we can confidently say our new panto for 2022 is going ahead. 2020 should have been a year of celebrations for H.A.D.S as it was our 100th birthday. So we're more than making up for it this time and bringing you our very own story of The Wizard of Oz. The committee met and to say the atmosphere was electric with excitement is no understatement simply because we regard ourselves as a family, and when families get together the joy is overwhelming. As a family we couldn't be more proud of the younger generations who choose to give up their time to spend with us. This production script has been co-written by very talented two younger members Celsey Goodyear and Eli Gregory. Directors this year will be Jo Sheldrake and Russel Allen. There's going to be a few twists on the original story, but keeping the very lovable characters, the friendly scarecrow, cowardly lion and tinman. If you see yourselves as either The Wicked Witch, The Great Wizard of Oz or even a flying monkey please come along to our auditions which will be held at URC Church in the Market Place, Hadleigh on the 5th and 12th of September 2021 at 3 o'clock. Everyone is welcome, all talents whether you've experience on stage or not. If you feel you would like to help backstage or front of house during the shows, please also pop along to an audition day and meet with the committee members. Please note that although we are a Hadleigh based group, and all our past productions have been performed in some of our dearly loved churches we have had to make the decision to use the village hall in Elmsett for this production. Unfortunately to put a production on we have to hire a stage at huge costs to our budget. Thankfully Ellmsett have kindly said we can use their hall which is brilliant for us as it has a stage already there. Rehearsals will be mostly in Hadleigh on Sunday afternoons. Shows will be in the school half term holidays week commencing 21st of February. 2022. HADS Membership fee is £10 to cover the cost of insurance. We hope to see many new faces and welcome back previous performers. Look forward to seeing our ever supportive audiences in February 2022.Heres to a wonderful Over The Rainbow Show! Hadleigh Steering Group The Steering Group meets on the second week of each month. A complete list of dates and our Terms of Reference are available. We share information, explore ideas and facilitate new ventures and events such as VISIT HADLEIGH, Hadleigh on Show, and the provision of a new market bench. Representatives attend from the following groups: voluntary social care, community organisations, residents, business and Town and District Councils. Anyone is welcome to attend. The next meeting is Tuesday 14th September at 4.15pm – 6pm in the Social Room at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. The chair for September will be Jan Devey To attend please let us know in advance jessicanevard@btinternet.com or text 07873 484 252
August Meeting - Chair Jane Snowdon The chair welcomed everyone back after such a long absence and thanked Jess for producing the regular issues of The Steering News during the break. Terms Of Reference It was agreed to have this as an Agenda item for the September meeting – primarily to discuss future direction, communication and facilitation. It was asked if we endorse funding bids: we have never been asked to do this and we generate no income, nor bid for any funding either for ourselves or anyone else. It was felt the Steering Group should focus on one matter at a time, rather than try and do too much at once and focus on helping to achieve synchronicity of the town’s community organisations. Updates Visit Hadleigh Website The walk-in Visitor Information Centre has been running since 3 May and will host five exhibitions through until September, two of which are brand new for 2021. Seven new visitor information volunteers have been trained and a number have returned from previous years. Between May and July some 626 visitors have been helped. Valuable information has also been given to people having just moved into Hadleigh, those who are considering moving here and existing residents. The website is being well used for local accommodation and news of events and activities is slowly returning. The Community Gardeners’ time has been thoroughly disrupted thanks to a mixture of Covid and poor weather! Hidden Gardens (4 September) programme will have some information on the Cedric Morris Gardens and planting in the Market Place. New planting will take place in the autumn. The Hanging baskets have again been a huge success and grateful thanks were passed to Stuart, Jane and the whole team. Tidy Town Litter picks have continued throughout 2020 and 2021 by individuals and family groups, as appropriate. Hadleigh is very fortunate to have such a committed team of volunteers Email: ourtidytown@gmail.com Build Back Better The appearance of the town was discussed and how the businesses in the High Street, in particular, could make more of an effort to keep the immediate area outside their premises in better order. The increasingly poor state of the town’s car parks (responsibility of Babergh) due to overgrowth and unsightly barriers around trees and weed ridden gutters was discussed. Babergh’s Car Parks is to be an Agenda item for the next meeting when we hope a representative from Babergh and Hadleigh Town Council will be present. Attendance, now that we are meeting face to face again, is to be encouraged to facilitate collaborative working Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group The PPG has continued meeting on Zoom. Jan Devey has successfully organised over 40 volunteers to man the Health Centre car park and admissions for Covid vaccines and she received a very well deserved Town Mayor’s Award at the Annual Town Meeting for her sterling efforts. The Practice had administered over 17,000 jabs by June, with two more planned sessions. The green light is awaited for vaccinating younger people and giving boosters. The CCG is exploring ways of dealing with long covid and obesity: the PPG is awaiting the outcome of discussions to see how the Practice can assist. A survey, compiled by Dr Lyons, was sent out to patients and results are awaited. The art exhibition in Reception will be changed in September. Patients continue to make unnecessary phone calls to the Practice and ways to address this are under discussion. Sincere thanks were offered to the Practice for their magnificent management of vaccinating against the pandemic whilst also continuing with their usual care. A.O.B Lime Tree next to Deanery Tower After careful and thorough investigations, sadly, due to extensive root rot, this lovely 200 year old tree has to be felled and the Town Council are in charge of this. When dates have been agreed for felling, the community will be told so that wood carvers/ wood turners & carpenters can come to take some of the wood, from which we hope some items can be manufactured, be they small mementoes for the town or larger items, like benches for the churchyard, when the wood has dried (but this will not be a quick process). Jane Snowdon hopes to lead a special Walking with Trees in honour of this magnificent tree before the felling takes place. Local List – Hadleigh’s Overlooked Heritage Exhibition 17 & 18 September, 10am – 4pm, Town Hall Dining Room This is being run by The Hadleigh Society and Hadleigh Town Council and seeks to record the buildings in Hadleigh not currently Listed, but worthy of formal note for a variety of reasons.

French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, I apologise for missing last month’s deadline, I did have quite a few locals say that they missed our monthly news. It was a crazy month with one thing after another, one of those pressing things was, preparing for one of our rescue horses that was out on loan to come back, Boris was joined with his new companion Bee. Bee is the coloured horse and Boris the bay. (pictured) The other picture in our news this month shows some of the helpers in full swing, putting the shelter up ready for our two horses. We now have some wonderful helpers who turned up in August to put the shelter up, a big thank you goes out to the main builders, Darren, David and Gareth, along with their helpers, Sharon, Fin, Jackie, Debbie and Sonny. Each week we have the long time helpers, John, Colin, David and Lewis who come in to do a mountain of jobs, I certainly couldn’t do it without their muscles, hauling all the heavy stuff about, fixing fences and cutting grass. The joy for me is that after all these years French’s are finally getting a good team of helpers on board with us. Hooray for that! Sadly for our Charity for over a decade now we always seem to get overlooked, when so much good work has and is still being done with us. French’s is not just an animal rescue, we have worked throughout this time with young people who have mental health problems and disabilities along with those who are older, that feel alone in life. At our previous home in Hadleigh, we worked with between 20-30 vulnerable people a week, not a month or a year, a week and yet all I ever heard while I was pleading for local support and helpers was “sorry I did not know you existed”. Yet all the vulnerable people we helped, found the pathway that lead to our door and still find their way to our door, they knew we existed, because we do a fantastic job working with animals and the vulnerable together on our farm. We also spent this time working with unemployed people, by helped them gain a variety of work skills, enabling them to be able to find a job. All of this with little to no support from the people we hoped would be there for us, with French’s Care Haven, never being one of the chosen few. That has been heart breaking for me and at times I have felt like I had the world on my shoulders, fighting on alone to keep us going, while struggling financially with our massive outgoings that is needed to keep our rescued animals well fed and given the very best care. The animals care always came first and still does, above anything else, they are the sole purpose of French’s and all the people we help along the way are a wonderful bonus. Now I have got that gripe off my chest, let’s move on to some joyful events that we have planned. French’s have a couple of dates for you to make note of and come along to, as we need all the local support we can get on these fund raising events. The first date I would like you all to put into your diary is for our BBQ OPEN DAY ON 25th SEPTEMBER between 12pm-3pm, come along have something to eat and drink with us, join in and meet the animals. For any further information contact Sharon who is head of our fund raising events. We have a date for our QUIZ NIGHT 20th NOVEMBER IN HADLEIGH. It will be another fun night with fish and chips, homemade cakes and a raffle, along with a good laugh for all. For your table tickets, please contact Sharon by email to: Frenchs.100club@gmail.com or Call Sharon on: 07999 051401. Please contact me if you would like to volunteer or become a much needed sponsor. Hadleigh u3a – Return of live events! We finally were able to relaunch our live events with a guided tour of Green Island Gardens near Ardleigh on 28th July. It was a lovely day, beautiful location and everyone was in high spirits at actually seeing each other, many of us for the first time in sixteen months. The tour was very interesting, both for the wealth of information on the development of the gardens, but also for the snippets of history attached to the house itself and the day included a delicious ploughman’s lunch in the marquee.

Next up was our annual summer party on 9th August at the Guildhall which was great fun all round. Our speaker’s talk was entitled ‘Every Life has a Story’ – in his case a career in the RAF, then Norfolk Police, followed by becoming a Norfolk County Councillor among other things. But throughout he developed his early passion for the bagpipes, both playing and forming a band who have played at various prestigious events. His presentation closed with a live performance which lead perfectly onto our ‘bring your own picnic’ in the sunshine in the Guildhall gardens. So we now feel well and truly relaunched and will be resuming our monthly meetings on Monday 13th September at our usual venue at the URC in Market Place, Hadleigh when our speaker will be Dr James Taylor, a former auctioneer and curator of the Maritime Museum Greenwich who will talk about Brilliant British Humour in the Forgotten Art of the Picture Postcard 1840-1950, which promises to be more lively and entertaining than the lengthy title might suggest! These meetings are open to all members and take place at 2.30 pm on the afternoon of the second Monday of each month, always ending with a chance for a cuppa and a chat, as all good gatherings should. We have a full programme of speakers booked right through to the end of 2022 and are also working on new outings to places of interest, starting with Ickworth House on 23rd September. We have re-started with easily reachable places but as time goes on we will return to further flung adventures and theatre visits. And we have already booked Hintlesham Hall for our Christmas Lunch on 6th December. All our external events are charged at cost and open to all members. Our special interest groups are now up and running again – everything from jazz to art and philosophy and lots more in between. A number managed to keep going throughout the lockdown period by zoom or email and the walking group persevered in groups of whatever size was allowed at the time. We’re a determined lot in Hadleigh! Don’t know about the u3a? Briefly, we are part of a nationwide organisation of over a thousand u3a’s in the UK with nearly half a million members overall. Here in Hadleigh we have over 200 members, many you may find you know. We have no religious or formal academic affiliations, the only criteria being that members are no longer in full-time paid employment, irrespective of age. To find out more do have a look at our website at u3asites/hadleighsuffolk or by telephone on 07770 870405.
Poetry Corner The Headless Swan There’s a headless swan in our river How does he drink or chew? How does he know just where he’s going? I haven’t got a clue. Swans don’t swim, they paddle With their flipperty, flapperty feet They’re graceful when they have a head They really look quite sweet.

Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan Hadleigh Town Council’s Planning Committee set up a sub-committee for the Neighbourhood Plan, made up of Councillors, officers and members of the public. The first meeting took place on 22nd July and the minutes can be found on the Council’s website. In the meeting, the key policy themes were agreed as was to set up six working groups to collate information, conduct consultations and then to draft the policies. If you have expertise or a keen interest in these areas, or have strong communication and engagement skills, please consider joining one of these working groups. Working groups are not governed by the strict rules of council meetings and can be held via remote means when necessary. The working groups will then feed their work back to the sub-committee via the member representative on each group in order to build the Plan. Of course, anybody can join multiple groups and they will all ultimately link together. A Neighbourhood Plan can influence the Local Planning Authority in their decisions for development in our town. We're looking for members of the public with a specific interest or relevant expertise, to join the working groups to help form the Neighbourhood Plan. The working groups will focus on the detail of the identified key themes within the Plan which will form the policies for Babergh to consider when making planning decisions. If you are interested in being part of one or more working groups, please register your interest with the Town Council’s Projects Officer on projects@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk. The key policy themes encompassing a wide range of activities and policies from the heritage of the town to the design points of new buildings, are: Housing needs & growth High St & Tourism Business Open Spaces & Sports Facilities Natural Environment Traffic, Parking & Sustainable Movement For more information and regular updates on the Neighbourhood Plan progress, as well as a list of frequently asked questions, visit https://hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk/hadleigh-neighbourhood-plan

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice I’m a single parent and lost my job during the pandemic. My local Citizens Advice helped me apply for Universal Credit which has been really helpful to cover some of the income I’ve lost. But I’m very worried about the upcoming £20-a-week cut to Universal Credit - I don't know how I'll be able to pay for the school uniforms and shoes, especially as they grow so fast! Is there any other support out there to help plug the gap? If you're on a low income or employed, you might be able to get help with some of the costs of sending your child to school, including school meals, transport and uniform. It’s always worth talking to your local education authority to see what support is available as some of their resources and offerings can differ. The following information is for England. Free school meals Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 automatically get free school meals. If you have older children, you can apply for free school meals if you get certain benefits. In your case as you’re on Universal Credit and you applied after 1 April 2018 you would be eligible if you earn less than £7,400 a year without benefits. You can see the full list of eligibility requirements on the Citizens Advice website. To apply for free school meals, you need to contact your local authority, you can check the details at Gov.uk by typing your postcode in. Transport If your children are aged between five to 16, your local education authority might offer free or lower cost transport if you don't live near school or your child's unable to walk there. You need to apply to your local education authority for help. Uniforms and other costs Your local education authority might also be able to help with some other costs, like uniforms, music lessons or trips and activities. There may also be local charitable schemes to help with these costs, it’s worth checking with the school to see if it knows of any. Schools can also sometimes also advise on finding secondhand uniforms. What’s next If your child is staying in education after year 11, you must tell HMRC’s Child Benefit Office if you want to continue receiving child benefit and any extra support for children within means-tested benefits. When your child turns 16, HMRC will send you a letter asking whether your child will stay in education or training. You must reply to this letter to keep getting Child Benefit. If you need advice or information, contact Sudbury & District Citizens Advice. We are providing advice by telephone and email, Monday – Thursday, 10am – 1pm. Please phone 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. You can also telephone our advice line on Freephone 0808 278 7868 or 0800 144 88 48. My canine pals and I detect an air of fresh optimism amongst the humans with talk of evenings out, day trips, going away and plans to attend two events on 5th September - the Plough Day at Badley Road, Great Waldingfield, CO10 9RY and a Dog Show at Leavenheath Village Green. Also a Fun Dog Show on the 11th at the Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding, IP7 5QY. Meanwhile, we have a delightful pair of elderly Border Collies, sadly their owner died. Eleven and ten year old Ruby and Renee are fit and well, adore their walks and cuddles. If you are the special person with the loving home they deserve, please leave your name and number on the answerphone or email. Everyone has a book in them, including one of our supporters. Frank Payne has written about his early life, from a wartime childhood in London to a promising career in sports journalism which was rudely interrupted by two years National Service. Frank’s return to Civvy Street was peppered with disappointment and disaster, whetting the reader’s appetite for the next instalment later this year. “Here Today, Goon Tomorrow” is available for £5, all proceeds to SESAW, please phone or text 07881 785535 to order a copy. Elmsett Messy Olympics The Olympics in Tokyo may have ended, but Elmsett Messy Church held there own ‘Messy Olympics’. Events included the long jump, hurdles, javelin, shot put, discus, showjumping, high jump, triathalon and boat race- all ‘loosely’ based on Olympic sports! Competitors included 24 children supported by their parents and grandparents. As the event was held on our Village football pitch, there were several spectators – unlike Tokyo! We even had our own Paralympian Evie Edwards who is about to fly out to Tokyo as part of the Team GB Boccia squad. Evie gave us a demonstration and all the children were able to have a go. Look out for her as the Paralympics start – Team GB missed a medal at Rio by just one point, so we wish her good luck this time round. Several passers by commented on how great it was to see the children’s smiling faces and hear the laughter and fun that everyone had. At the end, we had a closing ceremony where everyone got a gold medal and certificate, of course, a posy and a chance to wear a real Team GB T shirt – one size “fits” all! Liz Cope

The First Team got off to the best start of the season under new Manager Steve Holder, coming away from our long trip to March win a 2-0 victory our goals coming from Josh Cheetham & Sam Sharp. This was followed by a home match against a tough Whitton Utd outfit but unfortunately we could not make it 2 wins on the trot as we went down 3-2 Max Dinnell and Joel Glover our scorers. But on Saturday 7th when Desborough Town made the long trip in the F.A. Cup extra preliminary round, Harry Brown and Joel Glover gave us a 2-0 win to take us into the next round on 21st August when we travel to Mulbarton (more on this next month). Our visit to Brantham saw a 0-0 draw giving us a more than well deserved point in this tough encounter. Saturday 14th Aug Fakenham Town made the long trip from Norfolk for the first time in four years, their journey home must have been a long one after we had beaten them 5-1 with four of our goals coming from Joel Glover in the first half, Joel certainly left his mark on this match. Joel will now be away for three months as he travels to Brazil with the Christian Church supporting underprivileged in various locations. We all wish Joel well with this important work and wish him a safe journey and return. We must not forget Joe Yaxley who scored our 5th goal. The Reserves commenced their league season on the same day with a trip to Framlingham, taking the lead through Kieron Judd, we then lost our way with Framlingham running out 5-1 winners. By the time this edition drops through your letterbox both our Under 18's and our newly formed Hadleigh United Brettsiders Team will have started their respective season. The Under 18 home matches are played at the Millfield under lights on Thursday's. The Brettsiders home matches will be played on Layham Road Sports Ground with their matches kicking off at 2.30 pm rather than 3.00 pm. All the details of our matches can be found on our website hadleigh-utd.co.uk, or see our posts on our facebook page Hadleigh United Football Club-Official. As with any Club we are always in need of help behind the scenes we are looking for someone to take on the role of General Secretary (Committee Position) and also a press officer to cover home matches to compile matches reports for our social media and website so anyone interested please get in touch via enquires@hadleigh-utd.co.uk. Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex September already; where has the season gone? It looks like the 1st XI will be battling it out for the bronze in Two Counties Division 1, with Witham out of reach at the top and Woolpit pulling away as top Suffolk club. It has been a stop-start kind of summer, with the weather and Covid claiming too many games. In the last month Ben Wallis's side have only played two matches, one a comfortable win over East Bergholt and narrow loss to Woolpit. The 2nds run for promotion has stalled a little, but at least we can say we have played the majority of our games. The leaders, East Bergholt, have played just nine of 18 and have certainly been the beneficiaries of the average points system introduced because of Covid. Justin Toombs has continued his incredible form, and now has over 600 runs to his name after 90 against Battisford. Ironically, when he got a duck, against St Margarets, others came to the fore, with Tim Rix (92), Arran Tampion (89) and Nadie Abdul (56) putting the hapless bowling to the sword, and helping the team to one of their highest ever totals, 341-7. The Sunday side notched up their second win of the season over Long Melford, with Jaco Engelbrecht and Matt Clark each hitting 66, and Francesca Stenning bowling well on her debut for the Academy side. The Ladies finished their season with two convincing victories, bowling Frinton out for 57 and beating league leaders Copdock off the last ball to clinch a memorable win. Charlotte Gaunt top scored with 32 and Imogen Bennett picked up two more wickets to add to her 315 against Frinton. A second-placed finish in the league is a fine achievement for Sharon Elliott's team. The club was delighted to hear recently that we have had our ECB Clubmark accreditation renewed. Retaining Clubmark status demonstrates that we are a safe club for children to learn the game, and we would like to thank our Safeguarding Officer Jo English for all her hard work in helping us achieve this. We have had a very successful summer with our All Stars and Dynamos programmes, thanks to the efforts of all of our coaching team. Gary Wiles

The National competition which is open for every golf club in England to put forward their leading medal winner was held on The Bracken Course, with a practice round on Monday, followed by the Final on Tuesday. The Bracken, which was in lovely condition, is very challenging both from the tee and on the very undulating greens, caddy & husband Mark proved invaluable in his advice and support. Katie came in with a stableford score of 36 points, a steady 18 out and 18 back, to take 2nd spot. She was absolutely delighted with this result and had a lovely 2 days at Woodhall Spa, including a competitor’s dinner on Monday evening where she was presented with a trophy for winning the East Regional final at Ely in June
