Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG)

The Gareth Meredith Memorial Walk was a huge success with over 65 participants and more involved in the Meet and Greet Team at the Hadleigh Practice which was open that day. They raised over £1600 for an Infrared Vein Finder in the newly created Phlebotomy Unit. Alan and Beryl Meredith were delighted with the response, especially as it was a pastime much enjoyed by their late son Gareth. There is a display of photos from the walk in the Waiting Room.

Suffolk artist, Jenne Foulger is beavering away as I write to make sure she has sufficient artwork to fill the blank Waiting Room walls for two months, September to October. You don’t need to be ill to go in and view her unusual work.

Congratulations are in order and well deserved. Happily, the recent national NHS Survey indicated a high level of patient satisfaction with the Hadleigh Boxford Health Centre. On all counts, according to its users, they did well but Receptionists came in for special recognition scoring 100% approval for their service. To check our performance ratings or those of any other Practice visit the links given below.

Although you may feel making a list of your ailments before your face-to-face appointment is helpful, that is not always the case. Unfortunately, doctors have to limit their patient time to 10 minutes per person. You can better prioritise your health issues and use your appointment time to tackle the most serious. Sadly, many patients focus on a lesser problem and mention something more serious just as they are leaving.

People are still using the patient car park when they are not attending appointments at the Practice. This includes town shoppers and visitors to either pharmacy. Using the many alternative parking areas in the town would free up more spaces for ailing, less fit patients.

Finally, many patients are concerned about the change in the arrangements for a repeat prescriptions. This only applies to Boots’ customers. Previously your repeat prescription has been dealt with, internally, by the pharmacy. This has changed. Patients will now be given their repeat prescription when they pick up medicine. This must be delivered to the Practice post-box for a doctor’s approval. The Practice will then send confirmation to the chemist who will prepare your drugs for collection as usual. All this can also be done online via the Practice website, the NHS app and Email. Using IT precludes the need for you to personally deliver your repeat prescription to the Doctors. You could also use Pharmacy 2U who provide an online delivery service. Please note there is no change for patients using the Practice’s, Boxford’s or Mill Pharmacy.

Debbie Wilson Therapy – focus on

low mood and depression

Every single one of us experiences periods of low mood. However, it is worth remembering that we are all individuals and that for some, low mood can be frequent and can last for a long time. We can then run the risk of acceptance and viewing this as our normal, but just because it has been our normal, does not mean it is okay and that you must accept it. Change is possible.

I believe that a good starting point in therapy is to provide some psychoeducation to clients. This way of working assists clients in understanding what they are experiencing which raises awareness of future triggers to support their emotional wellbeing beyond therapy.

There are tools that can be learnt that we can all use, including those with a diagnosis of depression or anxiety, as we experience life’s challenges whether big or small. In the ideal world, the time to begin developing these tools is during our childhood and then continue to build on them as we age, but it is never too late. The more we practice, the more we can support our emotional well-being and we can then ride the waves building stronger resilience along the way.

Quite often our low mood is the result of unhelpful thinking patterns and the connection between our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behaviours which can be overwhelming leading to distress. Science, particularly over the last few decades, has confirmed that we all can influence our emotions. Neuroplasticity has evidence that we can change our thought patterns and behaviours. Therapy is not a medicine; it does not provide a quick fix. Instead, it works like a mirror, enabling me to reflect back to clients what I am noticing during our work together, raising my clients' awareness of what has been holding them back.

Where has the summer gone? Some parts of the world are baking in the heat and we are constantly dodging the showers. Farmers are trying to get the harvest in and some crops are beginning to spoil in the ground. This is all adding to the pressures people are facing with interest rate rises and all the other certainties of life. If you feel overwhelmed by it all and would like someone to talk to and listen to your concerns our qualified, registered healers are there for you. Please allow us to help you. environmentally-friendly burial is becoming more popular which is why Hadleigh Town Council are pleased to be able to offer this alternative.

As well as the Natural Burial Meadow, there is also a separate Rose Garden for scattering of ashes, which has been described as “a lovely place to visit in the future”. There is also a Tree of Life upon which in addition to traditional cremation and full burial plots, loved ones in the natural burial area or ashes scatterings can be commemorated with memorial leaves placed on the “Tree of Life”. Scattering of ashes can be booked in for our new rose garden close to the Tree of Life and natural burial area.

We are holding one of our popular Clairvoyant Days on Saturday, 14th October between 10am – 4pm. There will be two mediums who can give a 20 minute private reading for £15. If you would like an appointment please book early to avoid disappointment. Please telephone giving your name and telephone clearly and we will get back to you.

The addition to the long-standing cemetery at Hadleigh Town Council’s Friars Road location, which includes a Natural Burial Meadow for burials and cremations, is very much “up and running”. Concern about the environment, as well as other factors such as a love of nature and the outdoors, are leading more people to consider a natural burial. Natural burials are far from a new idea as returning a body directly to the earth has been done since time immemorial and the choice to have a more

Connect, Converse and Create

Hadleigh Men’s Shed is a meeting place for men, regardless of age or background, to share knowledge, experience and comradeship in an informal, no commitment setting. Men attending the Shed, or ‘Shedders’, may simply be there for a cup of tea and a chat or to work on an organised activity. While our structure and purpose may seem simple, our over riding goal is to improve the Shedders’ health, wellbeing and quality of life. So what kind of things do we do at the Hadleigh Shed? Well during a typical session the chaps gather and sign in, remembering of course, to jot down their preference for tea or coffee on the signing in sheet! Most then don their aprons and catch up with on going projects.

Our workshop has some fantastic machinery and tools and so most projects tend to be based around woodworking. For many the last time they used these kind of tools was during their school days and so we have introduced a short induction process and training on machinery is provided to ensure that everyone is comfortable and safe. There is no limit to the type of projects that we can do, but we do ask that all work done in the shed is in line with our ethos. The key thing to remember, is that while we all enjoy the physical aspect of creating something, it is the social interaction between the members that is the most important thing. We are still very much finding our feet in Hadleigh, but one thing that has become a regular feature of our sessions and is very popular with all is our ‘tea break’. If you fancy joining us for a brew and a chat then you would be most welcome. We are open four times a week, two day time sessions and two evening sessions. For more info then please email us at hadleighmensshed@gmail.com or find us on Facebook. A warm welcome awaits.

Hadleigh Evening WI

In July, we had a successful garden party in Bridge Street Old School. We are indeed fortunate to have this venue in Hadleigh, Ian and Matthew are so welcoming and helpful. Our Federation President and visitors from four other WIs commented on the standard of the setting both inside the hall and garden. The Nayland Handbells entertained us; one of the tunes they had prepared was 'In an English Country Garden'! In August, Lyn Davis regaled us with entertaining stories about life as an opera singer and chorister with the English National Orchestra. After she told us about how the sound effect from a beheading was achieved, we will never view a cabbage in quite the same light. This month Ken Stone's talk is entitled 'The House of Windsor' which he updates each year, so he will have a lot of interesting material for us. The Lunch Bunch had a great culinary experience at the Ski Slope restaurant, two having their birthday on the day - one her 93rd! This month we will be revisitng The Brook at Copdock, so know a good lunch awaits. The Bookworms book of the month is Peter May's The Night Gate, In August Miss Benson's Beetle was a good read. In October we will be looking at revisitng a classic from our younger days! The Amblers, as ever, enjoyed their ramble, this time starting out from Kersey Mill, albeit ending up with a heavy downpour in the last few minutes, while the less venturous stayed behind and had a wander around the shops before meeting up together for coffee and cake. We meet at 7.30pm in the seminar room of the Library on the third Tuesday of each month. You are very welcome to come for a 'taster' eveing. Contact Glenn Abbassi the Secretary on 07870 312409 and we will look out for you.

HOT SEPTEMBER!

Come and enjoy our garden, perhaps with a freshly made pizza from our wood fired oven. Pizza available Fridays and Saturdays from 3pm, weather permitting.

Our full menu is available 12 noon - 9pm, Monday to Saturday. We also serve food 12 noon - 7pm on Sundays, where you can also enjoy a Sunday Roast with us. Drinks served all day.

Rotary Review

The new Rotary year commenced on 1st July with Graham Parker taking over as President whilst Glenn Abbassi and David Stokes retained their positions as Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Hazel Cooley became Vice President and President Elect 2024/25.

With the membership standing at 8 presently Graham’s priority is to increase membership and with that in mind we hope there are a few people out there who would like to help Hadleigh Rotary grow again otherwise it will follow Round Table, Lions and others into extinction.

Rotary used to be a Club mainly for active businessmen with no women members and fairly rigid rules. All Club meetings followed a similar pattern wherever you went, here or overseas. This is no longer the case. Everyone is welcome of any gender or belief, young or old, as long as they are friendly, tolerant of others, have integrity, support diversity and are keen to give service to others providing help in the community and in the wider world.

Meetings vary and many Clubs no longer meet weekly or have a meal at their meetings. For some it is a breakfast meeting or maybe an early evening meeting. For others it is just a coffee or a drink at the bar whilst a growing number of Clubs meet on line only. So there is something for everyone. Hadleigh meets twice a month for lunch and once for coffee but if there was a need for any other type of meeting this would certainly be considered. There are a few rules but everything is pretty flexible. You will never know whether Rotary would suit you unless you come along and try it. We hope to see you soon!

It is hoped to start work on Float repairs next month and we will keep you up to date with progress. Again, If you think that you can help in any way please ring the contact number at the end of this article.

Ukraine: Rotary is still supporting Ukrainians both here and in their own country. Goods and money are both being provided by Rotary Clubs around the world and many Rotarians are travelling regularly to Ukraine. One result of the tremendous work being done there is that local Clubs are gaining members as their reputation grows.

Wherever there is conflict or natural disaster there are always Rotary Clubs nearby who are able to organise help and supplies often more quickly than the more well known Charities. For instance there are a number of Clubs on Maui and I am sure that local Rotarians will be in the thick of rescue and support operations whilst also getting in contact with Clubs on the other islands and Mainland to quickly organise additional help.

Would you like to be part of an organisation like this? If so, please telephone David 01473 827226 or visit the Rotary Club of Hadleigh website. You will also be welcome at one of our coffee mornings which are held monthly at Cobblers.

Hadleigh Walkers

Our September walk on Saturday 9th will be an away one starting and ending in Needham Market at the Lion pub (44 Ipswich Rd, IP6 8EH). We will depart from the Lion car park at 09.30 and proceed via Darmsden, across to the River Gipping Path, then across country to Bridges Cottages, Priestley Wood, the Causeway and back to the Lion (note - no dogs inside but welcome in the garden). The length of the entire route is around 10 miles and is an interesting mixture of countryside we haven’t walked recently, Woods, hills, and the river Gipping path. We should be back at the Lion around 13.30. We will have two short refreshment stops along the way.

As usual, we aim to average a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr) and walkers need to be able to maintain this pace. The route is fairly undemanding. Any kind of weather is possible so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground may be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Route maps can be requested from the following web site.

Singing in the shower or in the car?

Do you hum along to songs in the car or sing in the shower? The joy of music is around us and we tend to not even notice. Perhaps all of us are singers, really. Unfortunately, so many of us listen to the little gremlins that sit on our shoulder and whisper something that prevents us from singing more or even looking for the opportunity to sing with others.

People feel more positive after actively singing compared to just listening to music. This can be experienced by so many of us in different situations, for example singing along at a concert or festival, chanting and singing at football or rugby matches and hymns or gospels in church. Connecting to that feeling is a positive memory.

The benefits of singing in a choir are well known: improving your singing skills – saying bye bye to the gremlin that whispers “but you can’t sing!”, helping people feel more connected to others, improving confidence, making them happier, and even improve their physical and mental health.

This is what the members of Hadleigh Community Choir commented in a survey last year: “The choir gives me a sense of well-being. I like the fact that it’s inclusive, no prior experience needed.” “I enjoy singing with a great group of people.” These sentiments are illustrating the benefits our members experience and this is backed up by research. Physiological benefits of singing include exercising the brain, improving breathing, posture and muscle tension.

September may be the best time to explore this further with Hadleigh Community Choir. The choir will be led by a new music director, Matthew Olyver. The first two rehearsals are free to new members so it’s easy to come along and try singing in a choir; everyone is welcome to join, there is no audition. Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings from 7.15pm-9pm at the URC in Hadleigh, starting again on 7 September.

If you would like to find out more about the choir, please feel free to come and ask any question or email us in advance contact-us@hadleighcommunitychoir.org.uk

Autumnal planets on view

September sees the beginning of the transition from the Summer night sky to the Autumn one where the nights are ‘pulling in’ faster each day and the constellations are changing to the familiar patterns that will adorn our skies each clear night through till the Spring of next year.

Venus: Cannot be mistaken in the pre-dawn skies glowing like a white lantern at magnitude -4.5. If you own large binoculars or a small telescope, you will see that it appears to show a phase similar to that which we see with the Moon.

Saturn: Is placed directly south mid-month and will appear as a coffeecoloured ‘star’, you will instantly know it is not a star because stars ‘twinkle’ while planets do not, due to them reflecting the Sun’s light back to us. Through binoculars you will see that the planets looks elongated in shape, this is due to the famous rings that make this planet the most beautiful in the Solar System. Though a telescope these rings will be shown in all their glory.

Neptune: To see Neptune you will need a pair of binoculars and on September 28th, the moon wil act a useful sign post to finding the outermost planet as Neptune will be at 1 o’clock above the moon. You will see nothing more than a blue disc but at least you will locate it.

Jupiter: The behemoth of the planets within the Solar System is rising earlier each night now and cannot be missed due to its bright yellow appearance in the eastern sky. Binoculars will show you the 4 main moons of the planet, which will appear as small white, pinpoints of light. As the nights progress you will see how they appear to change position as they orbit their parent. A telescope will show a flattened disc to the planet, this is due to the planets guide rotation and also because it’s a gas giant planet. A telescope will show two distant bands on the planet, the north and south equatorial belts and also the great red spot will be seen on occasions. This is a huge hurricane - like storm system that has been known for at least 400 years and although it has shrunken over the centuries, it still rages across the planet.

And finally Uranus: Uranus is just visible to the naked - eye but a pair of binoculars will reveal this distant ice giant to be a blue - green disc. To find Uranus, you will simply have to turn your binoculars to the left of Jupiter and it will be located half - way between Jupiter and the 7 Sisters Star Cluster which is a familiar cluster of stars each evening from Autumn, and especially easy to find in Winter.

The Cock Inn

Well folks, we had a month off in August thus there was no news or views for you readers. Lots of people contacted me to ask why? That was nice. September is a busy month as the summer draws to an end and yes, I hear you say ‘What Summer?’. Dreadful weather really though we did get to repaint the outside of the pub and the flowers, supplied again by Phil Taylor were superb. Let’s hope that September delivers an Indian Summer as we could do with it. If you’ve not seen the floral display, come and take a look. Sadly the England ladies list 1-0 to Spain in the final, though it was a very close encounter with England hitting the bar and also saving a penalty. Proud of the Lionesses! Talking footy, the Premier League commenced in mid August with them Gordies off to a flying start. Manchester City look favourites again, though I guess the other top six teams will give them a run for their money. Congratulations to City too in their Supercup win against Sevilla with a 5-4 penalty shoot out! Already the controversy has started, with VAR once again offering a sub-standard and incompetent service with its failure to award a penalty to poor old Wolves in the dying minutes of their match against Man Utd at Old Trafford in their season opener. I know the fans of a few big clubs may not agree but it is very difficult for the smaller clubs to get a fair decision from the refs. The three refs that apologised straight after the match should have been suspended. Some big games in September so watch our fb adverts for dates and times, to include Luton v West Ham (Fri 1st), Arsenal v Man Utd (Sun 3rd), Spurs v Arsenal (Sun 24th) & Spurs v Liverpool (Sat 30th). For the Rugby Union fans we have the 2023 Rugby World Cup kicking off with the opener, France v All Blacks on Friday 8th September. This is probably the most open World Cup ever with a number of teams capable of winning it. England will play Argentina, Japan, Chile and Samoa. It’s a tough group though we expect qualification. The World Cup holders, South Africa are paired with Scotland, Ireland, Tonga and Romania, so another extremely tough group indeed. Wales are in with Australia, Fiji, Georgia and Portugal so there is no easy way through this tournament. The competition will take place in France who themselves have to take on New Zealand, Italy, Uruguay and Namibia. The final will take place in Paris on Saturday 28th October and we very much hope to see at least one British team on the day. As I write the Summer Nations Rugby matches are underway with teams playing what can be regarded as warm ups games against each other. Not reading too much into the results as team managers are still experimenting. i.e Wales beat England and England beat Wales the following week. Ireland by the way are now ranked No1 in world. Its all to play for folks.

If you are a motor racing fan there are three Grand Prix to whet the appetite. The first, the Perelli Gran Premio D’Italia takes place on Sunday 3rd at 2pm with the Singapore GP two weeks later on Sunday 17th with a 1pm race start.

If you want to watch the Japanese GP you will need to be an early riser as it’s a 6am start on Sunday 24th. Sorry, we wont be open!

We have a packed September of live music for you starting off with a Cock Inn debut for The Dividers on Saturday 2nd playing popular songs from the 70’s to present day. The ever super 3 Steps to Heaven follow on Sunday 10th with no introduction required. Another Cock Inn debut for 2023 with The Preservatives on Saturday 16th. A great four piece band playing iconic songs throughout the ages and full of energy and enthusiasm. We have not seen the wonderful Adam Harrod for a long time however he is back with us on Sunday 24th. He lives in Norfolk nowadays but he still loves to play The Cock Inn, and we know what we are going to get! Our final September gig sees another ‘new to us’ band on Saturday 30th. Welcome to ‘All Revved Up’ or sometimes known as ARU. We hope you enjoy them all. Great news too as we now open the doors at 11am on Saturdays and Sundays. We received many requests from sporting fans, dog walkers and people who love to have an early tipple. We are also still accepting cash as payment and will always do so even though some establishments are wanting to move toward ‘card only’. The banks are pushing for it too and why? Well folks they get a share of every transaction from us and something from you if you don’t pay up in time. If you pay cash they get nothing. I know what I prefer. See you all soon.

ZOR Boutique ATKERSEYMILL

Get ready for Autumn at ZOR

With the weather cooling down slightly, and now being in September we have got a large range of clothing available, which is perfect for the transitional weather. Our collections as always are available in many different colourways, styles and sizes.

Proving popular already is the Brakeburn midnight bloom blouse. Featuring a khaki green background with navy and coral floral detailing for an extra pop of colour. With its gorgeous tie neckline and ruched backing no wonder this has been a great seller already.

Another popular style is the Alice Collins roll neck knitted vest. These are great as they can be used for layering. Wear now as is, or layer over a chunky jumper once winter comes. As many people know I am always cold, so one of these is definitely coming home with me. We have also recently received a delivery of gorgeous Italian leather bags. My favourite is the twin compartment camera bag. Its available in many colourways, however I love the dark orange as this would pair perfectly with many autumnal outfits.

We are excited to announce we will be attending Autumn fair at the NEC in Birmingham on the 3rd of September. Here we will be meeting up with existing suppliers to see the new ranges, as well as finding new suppliers to keep things fresh. Keep an eye out for our new ranges.

Turning up the HEAT

This summer the news from around the world has made it hard to escape the reality of the climate crisis and its impact on humans and the natural world. Lots of us are reducing reliance on harmful fossil fuels, plastics and chemicals and choosing to fly less often and eat a bit less meat. All of which make a difference. But we can do lots more by coming together and tackling this together. Hadleigh may be small, but this amazing community is doing such a lot through groups like HEAT. Today HEAT has getting on for 300 supporters. Why not come and join us and help us achieve even more?

Our conservation volunteers meet every Wednesday to work on the Fuzz, Broom Hill and the Railway Walk or volunteer with local farmers. The swifts are beginning to use the nesting boxes that HEAT put up with your help and we are in the early stages of creating a green highway through the town. The River Group keeps a close eye on the health of the River Brett and is working with the powers that be to make sure it continues to improve. Our new Hadleigh Bat Group has been surveying bats this summer and learning about this mysterious mammal, as well as providing bat boxes to go up around Hadleigh. Once again we manned our HEAT exhibition at the May Show where we participated in the ‘Children’s Trail’ an educational activity for our younger citizens. Some of our projects have been handed over to others, such as the Forest School which is now part of the life of Parkside Preschool and St Mary’s School and we are planning new activities like introducing cloth nappies for babies.

This year we have started to look at our campaigning role. Achieving ’Net Zero’ carbon emissions is probably the greatest challenge facing us all and current policies are proving frustrating. HEAT has set up a Campaign Group to lobby our elected representatives and to get discussions going on how we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels here in Hadleigh. Not easy but important.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to HEAT. There are so many fantastic people in our community. If you want to get involved or help with any of our projects visit our website https://www.hadleighheat.org or email hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com

Inflation is eating away at

With such high inflation levels at the moment, many clients are asking me how to stop its eroding effects on their savings. As we all see the price of goods and services going up day by day, and the savings rates on offer at many banks still a great deal less than that of the inflation rates, it is a reasonable question to ask.

Constructing a well-balanced portfolio can be one way to try and beat inflation and target some real term growth over the medium to long term. We can help structure a plan that will aim to produce a return at a level that you are comfortable with.

The value of your investments with SJP will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select, and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

Equities do not provide the security of capital which is characteristic of a deposit with a bank or building society.

Cycle Sportive, Summer Race League & Tour Of Britain

Hadleigh Cycling Club’s 7th Gayford Flyer sportive will take place on Sunday, 10th September. It costs £15 to enter and this includes refreshments and music at The George. This year’s Flyer will have two signed routes of around 60 and 30 miles on mostly quiet roads close to Hadleigh, with some great views and the odd hill. Details on how to enter can be found www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk. There will be no entries on the day. The event is open to young cyclists provided they are accompanied by an adult. This year’s Gayford Flyer will take place in the week that over 100 of the world’s best cyclists race through Hadleigh in the Tour of Britain. Stage 5 (Thursday, 7th) will begin and end in Felixstowe. Spectators will see riders race down Benton Street onto the High Street, where there will be a sprint, between 12.15pm – 12.45pm.

Our coaching team has worked with a group of Juniors to develop their cyclocross skills throughout the summer. Led by Benson and Roger, Rickaby, Lucy and Mike have helped riders, 5 years and upwards, to deal with cornering, hairpins, hurdles, limbo-poles and sprints. One week was particularly challenging with children and their parents coping with torrential summer rain. Riders have earned points from every activity and will receive medals for taking part in the Summer 2023 Race League. It is satisfying to note that some HCC youngsters have taken part in local and regional events.

On Sundays: our Club Ride departs at 9.00am from The George Inn, High Street, Hadleigh. This ride is normally about 30 to 40 miles at a speed of approximately 15 mph, depending on the preferences of the ride leader and the capabilities of the group. Our rides are 'no-drop'. That means you won't be left behind (unless you choose to be), but the group may split into smaller groups of different speeds if that makes it easier to handle. Keep an eye out for the details from the ride leader nearer the time.

The rides and activities are weather dependent so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling Instagram hadleighcc or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

Niki Jackson

In loving memory of Niki Jackson who passed away peacefully on 27th July 2023. She is with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and painting to her hearts content. You will forever be in our hearts and never forgotten.

Love from Mark, Mum, Dad, Simon, Amy and all your family and friends.

Fidelis Ladies Group

It is with sadness we announce that we have had to close our group after 19 glorious years. We are no more. During this time the Ladies of Hadleigh and surrounding area have visited and eaten around the County. Our monthly speakers, who have informed, amused and demonstrated various topics are too many to mention. Many lasting friendships have been made, and we will all miss the coming together each month.

The Fidelis group has always had a strong community spirit, so as a final gesture we have purchased a Phlebotomy chair for Hadleigh Health Centre with any remaining funds distributed equally between Seesaw, EACH and St Elizabeth Hospice charities.

4.8 Benton End A very pleasing 1355 responses were given to the survey which will help in the first part of an expression of interest in applying in autumn to the National Lottery Heritage Funding. A new gardening trainee will start at the end of August, working two days a week for a year. Tours of the house in August have sold out. An art related event is being considered for either autumn or the Christmas period and comprehensive planting will start in the gardens next spring.

5 A O B Tracey Loynds will follow up with the Blood service to encourage them to return to the Leisure Centre.

Jane Snowdon reported that SCC said they had no powers to prevent lorries using Angel Street (among other streets) instead of the bypass.

Glenn Abbassi asked when the loos in Magdalen Road car park would reopen. Jan Devey will enquire.

Tracey Loynds has offered to show a six-minute video on the work Abbeycroft Leisure has done, and is doing, in Babergh and west Suffolk outlining its social impact. This offer was gratefully accepted for our next meeting in September.

NEXT MEETING: Tuesday 12 September 2023 @ 4:15pm.

Hadleigh Pool and Leisure, Chair: Rickaby Shearly Sanders

Hadleigh Art Club

We meet from 2.00pm until 4.30pm on Tuesday afternoons in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those who ask, we try to give advice, guidance and constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'.

We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group. We charge £2 per session to the cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5 and are due each May.

We have a list of weekly topics and these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current week’s) while others will be working on their own subject. Feel free to choose.

Our topics for September:

05/09/2023 - Cups, saucers and teapot/coffee pot

12/09/2023 - Still life - wood turned pieces by Brian Partridge

The ‘Don’t forget me’ Community Café is a dementia café that has been organised between Hadleigh Nursing Home, Waterfield House and Magdalen House. The local care homes have linked together to provide a dementia café that will be held in one of the homes each month.

The Café will provide social, emotional interaction and stimulation and will support the wellbeing of those who attend the café. We are inviting carers of the people atttending the café to come along as well as it will be a great benefit to them.

Hadleigh Nursing Home originally invited the other local care homes, Charlie Potter from Abbey Croft, the local MP’s office and Ansell Centre to a planning meeting to organise how we can work together to provide the Café as a community. The first Trial Run ‘Don’t forget me’ session was hosted by Hadleigh Nursing Home on Wednesday 28th June. The other local care homes were invited to bring residents and staff. Ellana Cook, from MP James Cartlidge’s office, volunteered her support. Overall the first trial run was a huge success.

PAPYRUS Hopewalk

This year we will see the first Hadleigh PAPYRUS (Prevention of Young Suicide) HOPEWALK which is run in conjunction with the wonderful charity PAPYRUS. They are a suicide prevention charity supporting our young people through difficult times, giving those struggling an outlet to open-up about their feelings and for family and friends to get advice on some difficult situations. It’s also a good tool for those in professional positions to use for debriefing, advice, and feedback on any difficult situation they may have come across, that could be in work, schools, or even medical professionals.

PAPYRUS was founded in 1997 by a mother, Jean Kerr, from Lancashire following the loss of her son to suicide. PAPYRUS was initially set up as the Parents Association for the Prevention of Young Suicide and has evolved into PAPYRUS.

These parents had all lost children to suicide. These children were aged between 13 and 34. Therefore at PAPYRUS when we talk about ‘young people’ we mean anyone under the age of 35 to honour that and also because suicide is the leading cause of death of all genders under the age of 35. Since 1997, PAPYRUS has continued to learn from the experience of those personally touched by young suicide. Today, PAPYRUS works in many ways to prevent young suicide.

The HOPEWALK has been going for a while now nationally, but I’ll be dedicating this first Hadleigh walk to my beautiful daughter who died by suicide aged 19 in 2014. The walk will start and finish at St Mary’s church Hadleigh and it will be for about two or three miles around the town and outskirts. We plan to meet at the church at 12:30 after the Sunday service on the 22nd October and we will provide tea, coffee, buiscets and cake.

I am a PAPYRUS Champion and volunteer for them on a regular basis, running charity stalls at events and give talks on what PAPYRUS do. I’m also ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Trained) And also a Mental Health First Aider.

I think it’s very important we support our young people when they are going through a difficult time in their lives, giving them an option to talk and openup about their feeling and giving them a safe place to turn.

The HOPEWALK will bring likeminded people together to talk, offer advice and most importantly to talk about mental health and that it’s ok to not be ok and it’s ok to ask for help.

PAPYRUS believes that suicide is everyone’s business and only by engaging with everyone can a community become truly suicide safer.

If anyone would like to get involved with the HOPEWALK them please feel free to email me and we can have a chat as to how you can get involved, that could be baking cakes or just being there to tell your story.

Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

“Oh no, it’s that time of the year again” Mum groaned as she cleared another swarm of flying ants off the table. Presumably these annoying insects have their place in Nature, preferably not in the kitchen!

All living creatures are welcome at SESAW, whatever their traits. We see a variety of personalities, particularly in dogs, from quiet couch potatoes to adventurous daredevils. Most settle in new loving homes, occasionally one bounces back and becomes a permanent resident.

Such was Bobby, a delightful, mischievous terrier, completely unfazed by deafness. Unfortunately, he hated being alone and came back to us after causing much damage in the short time his new owner was out. He was an exceptional character and seemed to be Houdini in canine form. If someone exclaimed “How did he get out?” you knew Bobby was up to his old tricks again. The fences were all made higher after a bemused householder in the next village phoned about a strange dog waiting for dinner in her kitchen!

At the age of seventeen years, Bobby has made his last great escape and our lives are the poorer for it.

Meanwhile we have Nico, a big, boisterous lad waiting for an experienced home with no small children. He is strong and bouncy, loves attention, long walks and swimming in lakes. He will make a fantastic dog with patience, kindness and on-going training. Please leave a message or send an email if he is the dog for you.

I’m off to find Mum who needs some extra love and attention from a little dog like me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

Community Project Update

Sound System: - We are pleased to report that sound system is in the process of being upgraded. This will greatly improve sound reception throughout the Church.

Vestry Storage: - Work is in progress in the Vestry to create a state-of-the-art storage for the treasured Church vestments and to preserve its carved, geometrical, wooden frieze.

Heating and Lighting: - The next phase of the improvements in the church is to update the current heating and lighting arrangements which are inadequate in the colder, darker months. The preferred method to light and heat this vast area combines both needs in specially designed chandeliers. Subject to final approval by all concerned, fourteen of them will not only provide both services but also make a stunning contribution to the interior. Each chandelier costs £10,000 and fund raising is in progress. However, it is hoped that businesses, special interest groups or individuals will purchase one of the chandeliers in their name. We are initially looking for pledges from sponsors and major donors. If you are interested in purchasing a chandelier or pledging money please contact Renewal Treasurer, John Goulbourn johngoulbourn@hotmail.com 01473 822 497

James Cartlidge MP Fundraising: - On Saturday 9th September, James Cartlidge MP will be participating in the (SHCT) Suffolk Historic Churches Trust’s annual, Ride and Stride event. He will be cycling to many of the churches in his constituency and the money raised will be divided between St Mary’s, Hadleigh and the SHC Trust. We hope his efforts will be generously rewarded with many donating to his online Just Giving page. www.justgiving.com/page/james-cartlidge. If you would like to be part of the action that day at St Mary’s please contact Jean Style 01473 828 532 or 07949391863 jeanstyles51@gmail.com

Pop-Up Lunchtimes, Café Church and Future Church Events: - The popup lunchtime gatherings are very popular and enjoyed by an increasing number of Hadleighites and their families. Attendance at the Café Church on Friday mornings is growing with the added attraction of a monthly Craft Fair. Concerts are planned including Hadleigh’s own take on The Proms on 21st October. All these activities are in addition to the quieter times for worship and prayer. How the town would benefit if these same facilities were improved to meet modern day needs and expectations.

Please do come along and support the many varied events and activities at the church. These are open to all members of the community. Alone or with family and friends you can be sure of a warm welcome.

Hadleigh Library News

It has been a busy time in the library this summer. The Summer Reading Challenge got off to an amazing start with nearly 200 children signing up during the first two weeks. A huge thank you to all our fantastic volunteers who have given up their time to help this year – we couldn’t have done it without you!

We will have a small selection of children’s games which can be borrowed with a library card. Parish Council

Below are the main matters discussed during the Parish Council meeting of 26th July 2023

• Co-option Gillie Cranfield attended her first meeting, having been co-opted in June. Julie Thickpenny confirmed that she wished to be co-opted to fill the remaining vacant seat on the council.

• District Council In the absence of Cllr Ward, it was agreed that any questions would be raised at the August meeting. It was further agreed that the Parish Council would give further consideration to developing a Neighbourhood Plan; this would be discussed at the next meeting.

• Speeding Cllr Curran expressed disappointment with the response from SCC Highways, who had suggested a speed survey at a cost of approximately £420; such a survey had been carried out along the B1070 in October 2019 and had showed clearly that the majority of vehicles had been speeding. In addition, the position of the SID at the top of Mill Lane (Highways’ preferred location) meant that the data was affected by vehicles turning into and out of that road. The Clerk would invite a representative from Highways to a discussion at the next meeting. It was agreed to re-form a working party to consider speeding issues. The next meeting would discuss the possibility of introducing Community Speedwatch.

• Training The Clerk had contacted SALC re bespoke training for the whole council; a decision would be made at the next meeting.

• Defibrillator locations It was agreed that Cllr Curran would look at producing a map showing the locations of defibrillators in the parish, to be published on the website and displayed on noticeboards.

• Refurbishment of telephone boxes It was agreed that both telephone boxes should be refurbished and painted. The Clerk would send out a community email requesting quotes from any interested contractors in the parish.

• Planning Councillors raised no objections to the conversion of an outbuilding at The Granary, Mill Lane, to an annexe. However, the Clerk would request confirmation that bat boxes would be installed as per Babergh’s recommendation, and that there would be no disruption to the public footpath during the works.

• Water Lane A parishioner was concerned about the poor maintenance and cleaning of Water Lane, and houseowners not maintaining their hedges. It was agreed that this would be an agenda item for the August meeting.

• Christmas Fair It was noted that LEG would be organising a Christmas Fair from 11am – 2pm on Saturday 9 December, in the Village Hall.

Layham Bug Club

The start of the summer holidays saw the first sessions of Layham Bug Club, a holiday club for primary-aged children, at St Andrew’s Church. After bug hunting to find out what was living in the churchyard, we built a beautiful bug hotel to encourage more wildlife to move in. With a range of craft activities and nature-based games, lots of fun was had by all. Bug Club will be running again during October half term. If you would like more information or to join the mailing list for future events, contact Glenda Hall (glendahall@ymail.com)

Social Club

• Medical Detection Dogs At our first August meeting we had a very informative and emotionally charged talk by Richard and David, volunteer speakers with Medical Detection Dogs. Richard explained the science behind a dog’s remarkable capacity to scent diseases, so far 28 in all, that various trained dogs can detect. We learnt about the founder of the organisation, Claire Guest and her own life-saving experience when her dog, Daisy, repeatedly sensed something was wrong and prompted Claire to visit her GP. Daisy had detected a deep breast cancer that was subsequently cured. Claire’s book,’ Daisy’s Gift’ gives a deeply personal and moving account of setting up the organisation based on her special relationship with dogs. David told us about the Medical Aid Dogs who live with those with life threatening illnesses and warn of a deterioration in a condition. We were all moved by the relationships between the dogs and their charges and amazed at the many lives saved daily. Many of the dog lovers present were very moved by the talk and cherish our own special relationships with our dogs.

• Flatford Guided Walk Members of the Social Club and friends enjoyed a guided walk and talk at Flatford on August 15. The sun shone as we were led by our knowledgeable National Trust guide, Pat Hodgkins, who explained

where Constable sketched his scenes for a variety of paintings. It was interesting to learn how the landscape had changed and how Constable had used artistic license. We were privileged to visit the island in the navigation behind the mill and see where the previous lock and mill wheel had been. The enjoyable morning was followed, for many, by a welcome lunch at the tea rooms.

Above the Parapet

Stone Street 30mph Speed

Restriction - Last month, Suffolk County Council announced that the speed restriction along A1141, Stone Street will be reduced to 30mph from its present 40mph limit. They agreed to make this change after carrying out a thorough speed and safety assessment of this stretch. This change will affect the stretch from the junction with A1171 bypass to where it meets the derestricted section just north-west of Stone Street Farmhouse; approximately ½ mile in length.

Last Year, residents living there approached me asking whether a speed limit reduction might be considered by the council for safety reasons. They cited that the road was dangerous for all pedestrians and households as there as no raised footpaths outside properties. Other hazards include slow moving farm vehicles that frequently exit the Peyton Hall junction into fast moving traffic, as do commercials from the pet food factory.

Although this stretch of road didn’t meet the criteria for a 30mph restriction, the residents presented a very strong case arguing that their small community bore all the characteristics of a small village. They petitioned all the households, the Bowls Club, the MD of Supreme Pet Foods and businesses located on Stone Street Court and Kersey Mill. They also gained the support from HEAT, the Hadleigh Cycle Club, and both Hadleigh Town and Kersey Parish Councils.

Given the effort the residents had made producing a comprehensive document detailing the hazardous situation there, I agreed to support their request for help. I instructed and funded Suffolk Council’s Safety and Speed Management Team to produce a Speed Limit Report for the attention of the Cabinet Member for Transport Strategy; which they duly did. Their conclusion was that this was a finely balanced proposal and considered that a 30mph limit would be appropriate to make the route safer. However, locally funded low-cost speed reduction measures would need to be identified to ensure traffic speeds are reduced and that drivers have the necessary clues to recognise the speed limit.

Councillor Surgery - I normally hold my surgery on the third Saturday of the month, but due to a calendar conflict I will hold my next one at 11:00 on Saturday 30th September 2023 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street.

Should you need to speak to me concerning an issue that affects you, then please contact me at - email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or Facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh, Twitter: @mick_fraser. Highways faults especially vegetation overgrowth and weeds, can be reported at: https://highwaysreporting.suffolk.gov.uk/ or by telephone: 0345 606 6171.

News from your Babergh councillors

Sites wanted in Hadleigh for sowing wildflower meadows and planting trees - Over the past two years, BDC Biodiversity Team’s free trees, hedgerows and wildflowers scheme has help plant nearly 400 large trees, over 10,000 small trees and hedgerow plants, and enough wildflower seed to cover over 12,000m². We are open for applications that both help wildlife and have public access. Applications can be for:

•Individual trees

•Tree planting schemes – street trees, a copse, an avenue

•Small community woods

•Hedgerows – both new and improving existing ones, especially where they help bridge gaps in the landscape

•Community or scattered orchards – we are keen to help retain our local heritage varieties and provide a source of free fruit for the local community, as well as helping wildlife

•New wildflower meadows, or changing short mown grass into a meadow area

We are doing what we can on the council’s land, but we need help on other sites to get to 30% of land managed for wildlife by 2030 (the national ‘30 by 30’ initiative). Sites can include parish land, school grounds, recreation grounds, land open to the public regularly, millennium greens and community spaces. Details of the scheme, along with the application form, are available at: https://www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/environment/planting-schemes/treeshedgerows-and-wildflowers-scheme/.

We can provide all plants and protection (canes, stakes, ties and tree guards); though we cannot provide labour or cover the cost of planting and watering afterwards, we can give advice on how to plant and look after the scheme. Cllrs Simon Dowling (Hadleigh North) and Jane Carruthers (Hadleigh South) are ready to help you decide where and what to plant, and to submit your application – just email or phone us and ask. Together we can make Hadleigh an even greener, healthier and more pleasant place to live!

Starbucks planning application, Weavers Meadow - The deadline has now passed for commenting on the planning application to build a Starbucks drivethrough facility on the land between Weavers Meadow and the A1071 Ipswich Road, accessed via Ellen Aldous Avenue (case reference numbers DC/23/01962 and DC/23/01963). You can still make your views on the proposal known by contacting the Chief Planning Officer, Philip Isbell, using the email address Philip.Isbell@babergh.gov.uk, or sending a letter to the Chief Planning Officer, Babergh District Council, Endeavour House, 8 Russell Road, Ipswich IP1 2BX. The application will be heard by the BDC Planning Committee because the land belongs to the council: the date for this meeting is not yet known, but members of the public will be able to attend.

Council objects to pylon plans - BDC is writing to the Government restating objections to plans for more pylons in the Suffolk countryside. National Grid is conducting a non-statutory consultation on its Norwich to Tilbury overhead line proposals. While the councils recognise the national importance of strategic energy infrastructure for the transition to net zero, they are calling for a co-ordinated offshore solution. The council will also be making a formal response to the current non-statutory consultation on the Norwich to Tilbury project. In the meantime, the council is urging residents, businesses, councillors, town & parish councils and campaign groups to make their concerns about the project known to National Grid.

Cost of living help - BDC and Citizens Advice are calling on those feeling the financial squeeze to check what help they can access – particularly if they have not done so before. The call comes as Sudbury and District Citizens Advice announce that they delivered £5,500 worth of fuel vouchers last financial year. This comes at the same time that research shows almost £19bn in support goes unclaimed every year, which could change the lives of millions of people nationwide. You can contact the district council or local Citizens Advice to find out what help is available. There may be support that you are unaware of, and offers which help cut spending such as 'social tariffs' from internet and phone companies.

£12,000. To find out more about how Warm Homes Suffolk could help you, visit www.warmhomessuffolk.org or call the team on 03456 037686. Babergh and Mid Suffolk to fund innovative businesses - Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, in partnership with the University of Essex, have funded four business innovation projects thanks to the unique Innovate to Elevate programme. Local organisations were invited to apply for fully-funded collaborative projects with highly experienced academics and research staff from the University to support business growth.

Digital services agency Orbital Media, architectural and interior design practice Project Orange, school photography specialists Braiswick Photographic and fine wine merchants 92 or More will each access up to £10,000 worth of academic expertise to help find solutions to their business challenges to help them grow.

Sinfonia Viva shares the joy of live music with Hadleigh residents - BDC has partnered with a national charity to bring an exciting musical experience to residents. The council’s ongoing work with producer Orchestras Live has seen a professional orchestra making stops across the district to share the joy of live music with residents. Four musicians from Sinfonia Viva held sessions at the Tattingstone Good Neighbour Scheme at Tattingstone Village Hall, the Bridge Project at AFC Sudbury, and the Dementia Café at the Ansell Centre in Hadleigh. During the sessions, the musicians performed a range of music and handed out instruments to members of the audience, including Cllrs Jane Carruthers and Simon Dowling, for some active music-making.

Annual electoral canvass under way - BDC’s annual canvass of electors is under way, ensuring everyone eligible to vote across the district can have their say in any forthcoming elections or referendums. We are required by law to carry out an annual canvass to ensure we maintain an up-to-date electoral register, meaning we must contact every residential property in Babergh. To make it as easy as possible, we have started contacting residents by email, with most households now preferring to update or confirm their details online. Those who do not respond online will need to return paper annual canvass forms instead, which will be sent out soon.

Hybrid meeting option for Planning Committee - BDC is now able to offer a hybrid meeting facility for some of our planning committee meetings –meaning public speakers, including town and parish representatives, objectors and supporters, have the option to participate in the meetings via Microsoft Teams rather than attending in person. The agenda for each meeting will include details of the location for the meeting, and whether speakers are able to join virtually through Microsoft Teams. You will need to inform the Committees Team at least 24 hours before the meeting that you wish to attend virtually to enable the team to put arrangements in place. Members of the Committee, presenting officers, the planning lawyer and the governance officer will still be required to attend in person to ensure that, should there be any technical issues, the meeting can still proceed. Should you have any queries, please contact the Committee Services team at committees@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk.

Locality grants - Each BDC councillor has a modest sum to spend on smallscale projects planned by local community groups. If you’d like to apply for an award, contact your ward councillor. Further details about what sort of projects are eligible, examples of successful bids, and the application form which needs to be filled in by the ward councillor and the organisation, are at: www.babergh.gov.uk/communities/grants-and-funding.

Glenn’s Virtual Missions

Land’s End to John O’Groats - It all started when I read an article in December 2020 about a walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats, effectively 1000 miles. It was promoting the great outdoors after the pandemic so I decided to do it, starting on the 1st January 2021. Virtual Mission is a website where one records each day’s walk and it is shown on a map. The route went via Devon, Dorset, Birmingham, the Peak District, West Yorkshire, Northumberland, Edinburgh, the Cairngorms, Inverness and on the 29th March, 2021 after 1,006 miles I arrived in John O’Groats. I download screenshots every week so have a record of the length of each day’s walk.

Hamburg to Munich - When I was a volunteer medical courier for Anthony Nolan, I regularly flew to cities and towns in Germany to collect bone marrow or stem cells for leukaemia patients in the UK. I therefore decided to do a virtual walk from Hamburg in the north to Munich in the south. This was a solo mission, and I devised a route which would take me to some of the places I had visited – south to Hanover, east to Berlin, south to Dresden, west to Leipzig, south west to Frankfurt, then to Mannheim, Stuttgart, Nuremburg and Munich. I started on the 1st April 2021 and finished on the 28th June, a total of 994 miles.

Ness Point to St David’s - Having walked south to north, I then walked east to west, beginning in Lowestoft on the 1st July and reached St David’s, Pembrokeshire on the 2nd August, via Worcester, the Wye Valley, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath and Carmarthen. During this walk I accompanied JW on his birthday walks, which over 4 days boosted my mileage by 58. The total mileage was 385.

Coast to Coast - A popular walk – starting from St Bees on 3rd August and after 156 miles reaching Robin Hood’s Bay on the 16th.

Royal National Institute for the Deaf - I had a few days without recording any walks, until the 1st September when I rose to the challenge of a sponsored walk of a minimum of 125 miles for the RNID. I was very grateful to those who did sponsor me, and in fact by the 30th September I had walked 322 miles. There was no set route so it was accomplished with a few longish walks to Kersey Mill, Upper/Lower Layham, Aldham Church.

Mayford to Marton - A virtual walk from Mayford, Surrey, where my brother and sister-in-law live, to Marton, East Yorkshire where their younger daughter lives with her husband and son. I started on the 1st October, and by 23rd October had walked 232 miles.

Hadleigh to Hastings - I am not sure why I chose that walk as it was only 120 miles, having started on the 24th October I arrived in Hastings on the 4th November 2021. Having walked 3,200 miles in 2021 on these 7 virtual missions, the ultimate challenge beckoned.

Cape Town to Magadan - A friend sent me an article about the longest walk in the world from Cape Town to Magadan, east Russia, which can be accomplished, if one literally walked, without using planes or boats, only bridges. Literally, too, it would be over 13,000 miles, passing through 17 countries. My Virtual Mission, however, showed it as 8,590 miles as it plotted in a straight line. I started from Cape Town on the 5th November 2021, then Virtually walked through Botswana, Angola, Zambia (A-Z), and the Democratic Republic of Congo. At some point in the DRC came the St Edmund’s Way walk – 80+ miles from Manningtree to Brandon - JW, AF, DR and I undertook this walk between the 2nd and 6th May 2022. The first day was 19.5 miles from Manningtree station to Bures. Then we walked 16.4 miles from Bures to Lavenham, Bury to Thetford was 19.8 miles and the final day was a stroll in the park as it was only 8.5 miles to Brandon station. Other walkers joined us on odd days, and we were very grateful to the drivers who collected us from one place and delivered us back there the following morning. Back Virtually to Africa – I went from South Sudan to Sudan, Egypt, Israel, Syria, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and finally Russia, and Magadan, where I arrived on 6 August, 21 months - 636 days - after setting off from Cape Town. Total mileage was 8,590.

I am now on a Virtual pilgrimage from London to Walsingham, and next year may literally do the walk.

Financial Regulation 4.1 It was noted that Financial Regulation 4.1 was broken due to a payment of £1,219 paid to Planning Portal to allow for the processing of the Layham Road Sports Ground planning application which was submitted on 26th May 2023, whereby payment is due immediately (else the application would not be accepted by the District Council). The Town Council paid this directly to be able to attain the c50% discounted rate for town and parish councils, without incurring further architects fees for re-submission at a later date. The payment was made after notification to, and subsequent discussion with, The Mayor. However, clause 4.5 of the financial regulations state that “In cases of extreme risk to the delivery of Council services, the RFO in conjunction with the Town Clerk may authorise revenue expenditure on behalf of the Council which in the Town Clerk’s judgement it is necessary to carry out. Such expenditure includes repair, replacement or other work, whether or not there is any budgetary provision for the expenditure, subject to

Councillor McLeod returned to the room at 7.50pm and continued to Chair the meeting.

Internal Audit Report 22/23 The Town Clerk read out the following statement: There are some small typos in the report from the auditor but it is not for the RFO or council to 'audit the auditor' and their report is exactly that - their report. The RFO and I had a conversation as soon as we received the report about the EMR figure on page 12 and I was assured that the solution we are providing is to add an addendum page when the AGAR is submitted to the External Auditor particularly highlighting this typographical error. It is clear that it is a typo only, given the rest of the sentence and supporting documentation.

Proposed by Councillor McLeod, seconded by Councillor Wright the Internal Audit Report for 2022/23 was received. Vote = 11 For, 0 Against, 0 Abstain

Mayor’s Monthly

Sorry for the gap in writing to you guys, it’s been a bit hectic the last couple of months. First off, in May we had the elections in which six Councillors put themselves forward for re-election, this meant that whilst we were quorate, there were only just over one third of the councillors that would make up full council (15 Councillors). As we still had vacancies we were able to co-opt residents that were interested in becoming a councillor. These co-opted councillors share the same responsibilities as an elected councillor and will serve the same amount of time. We co-opted eight new councillors, some of them are new to local governance and some had previous experience. The task we as a council had was getting everybody up to speed to sit on various committees and at the same time making sure that they get the correct training as a local councillor which is an ongoing task and I must say an enjoyable one.

What’s new: Last month I got permission from Full Council to form a small team of likeminded Councillors to look at certain aspects in a growing town such ours, so the Safer Community Working Group came into being. This group is looking at such issues as anti-social behaviour, both vehicular and physical, and speeding through our streets (including starting Speedwatch) plus many more issues that have come to my attention whilst conducting my weekly surgeries at St Mary’s Church. We are going to be looking at how the Town Council can help people that are not computer savvy report this kind of behaviour online, as most people do not like waiting on the phone for what seems to be an eternity when calling the 101 number. By reporting these issues the police can build up a picture of what is happening in any given area and this intelligence is crucial to combating crime and anti-social behaviour. As part of this initiative we are working closely with Babergh’s Community Safety Team, Suffolk Police Safer Neighbourhood Team and our local community police officer, Katie.

The proposed new pavilion at the Town Council’s Layham Road Sports And Recreation Ground is now on Babergh planning portal to view and comment.

I am quite excited about this as we can give our sporting residents, both young and old and everyone in between, a facility to be proud of. I am not the most sports minded person myself, as the most exercise I get is the walk down to one of our local cafés, and those of you who know me can validate that last statement, so even though I’m not athletic I would like to think as a town we can encourage our sporting community to keep them out of the café so that there is more fry ups for me.

Each year the incumbent mayor selects a charity to heighten awareness of, and to help raise funds for them. At the beginning of this year I was invited along to the annual general meeting of SSAFA (The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, Suffolk). I was both impressed and moved by the service and commitment to our armed forces personnel both serving and retired, and this charity as the name suggest looks after their families as well. There are differing reasons why the charity is needed, but let’s just say that the people who need help are not judged but aided supported and comforted.

I will be working closely with Cpt Louise Davis-Smith in the coming months in the hope of raising funds and awareness through different events held in the town, I would also like to take this time to point out that even though this is a national charity, any funds collected will be ringfenced for the Hadleigh and Wattisham branch.

All the best, Gordon.

Art In Practice

Jenne Foulger’s art has taken pebble painting to another level. Not just for the stones’ stunning colours but also for their persona in her pictures. As a keen bird watcher, Jenne has used her knowledge of ornithology when painting her carefully selected pebbles with brightly coloured acrylic Posca Pens. The ‘birds’ are then incorporated into an appropriate line drawing and box framed. The results are unusual, effective and fun. Jenne’s artistic portfolio also includes delicate line drawings of birds and scenes.

Jenne inherited her love of drawing from her father and although she has a degree in Interior and Textile Design, painting and drawing took priority. However, her design skills are called upon to create a spectacular Christmas display for Notcutts, Garden Centre at Woodbridge where she is gainfully employed. Her artistic creations were also part of Suffolk Open Studios and the Hadleigh May Show 2023 where she was artist in residence. Her own studio is in her garden in Bramfield where she lives with her partner and two children.

We are truly fortunate that Jenne has kindly agreed to be the first artist to display her work in the newly created mini gallery in the Waiting Room of the Hadleigh Health Centre. We hope that her work will be enjoyed and appreciated by all who visit the Practice.

We can now offer servicing and repairs for

Dear Sir,

We would like to say how much we enjoyed the cross country walk from Boxford to Hadleigh on Sunday 16th July. Alan and Beryl Meredith organised the walk as a memorial to their son Gareth who sadly passed away in November. The whole event was a huge success and raised a great sum of money, enough to buy a new infrared vein finder for the health centre. It was a spectacular sunny day and walking in the beautiful Suffolk countryside was appreciated, and enjoyed by all who took part. We really hope this is an annual event!

Helen and Dean Fenton

Dear Sir,

I have concerns about a possible artificial pitch at the Layham Road site, right beside the River Brett. There should never be a plastic/rubber pitch anywhere near a river. That area on the rugby field always floods when we get heavy rain in the winter months. Many insect species live in real grass, upon which many species of birds feed, including Swallow, Swift, Housemartin, Wagtail, Pipit, Thrush, Fieldfare, Redwing and many more.

I see Little Egrets, Herons, Gulls and even Lapwings on the rugby field when there is some shallow flooding. I also see Little Owls catching Billy Witches at dusk during May-July.

I still see a good number of Swallows flying low over the rugby field during bad weather, also Swifts catching flying ants around July/August time. So it’s not just the river to be concerned about but also the bats, water bird species and insects that depend on all the plants along the river bank. If you want to play outdoor sports like football, you should play on real grass. I always did, so did many others. REAL GRASS, not a plastic or rubber pitch.

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you to express my concerns with respect to the proposed 3G pitch at Layham Road Sportsground. The negative impacts on health of such pitches are overlooked by those who promote them as supporting a healthy lifestyle. This ignores the fact that the pitches are associated with increased rates of injury, are unplayable in hot weather due to high surface temperatures and of greatest concern is the impact of inhalation and skin contact of the rubber crumb on which they are laid – particularly to children. Based on the toxicity of the crumb (derived from used tyres) many states in America have now banned it and an EU ban will come into force this year. A distinguished Professor of Public Health (Andrew Watterson) has called for it to be banned in the UK and the Environment Agency is currently investigating its toxicity with a view to changing guidance on its use in any project. Do parents really want to risk their child’s health when so much evidence on rubber crumb toxicity is accumulating?

Dear Sir,

I am very concerned that there has been a recent push to speed up the proposed 3G pitch at Layham Road Sports Ground by choosing tyre crumb infill. This infill causes microplastic pollution and a significant amount will end up in the river. Plastic grass blades also break up into microplastics and contain PFAS Forever chemicals. Glyphosate is also used regularly on artificial pitches to keep the weeds down. All these pollutants will end up in the river and the environment. We should not be exposing our wildlife to this or the community. We should be able to enjoy the river without worrying about our health.

The pitches also create urban heat islands that reduce air quality. Cities are now urgently looking at ways to stay cooler because of the higher temperatures. It would make far better sense if the council speak to a sports turf specialist. A specialist will advise them on improving drainage, soil aeration and better grass management. Teams will be able to play on the natural grass for much longer and the whole town will stay cooler and healthier without the loss of greenspace.

Kind regards, Suzanne Grace

Sunday 23rd July saw the annual Ellisons Ipswich Ekiden Relay race, hosted by Ipswich JAFFA Running Club. Superbly organised as always, we had a new venue this year at Ipswich High School, providing an impressive backdrop to the race. There were many clubs taking part from all over East Anglia, so lots of competition. The early clouds which threatened rain and promised nicer running conditions soon disappeared and we were left with the usual humidity that we have come to expect every year!

First up were our wonderful Juniors, running 1-mile laps in teams of 4. This year saw us fielding 4 teams between the ages of 8 and 14, with everyone putting in a brilliant effort against some much older and more experienced runners. There were 54 teams taking part in total, with Hadleigh Hares finishing 14th, 28th, 41st & 51st. A very well done to Kyan McNeill, Felix Gunning, Hugo Gunning, Daniel Cooper, Ella Baalham, Finley Smith-Surety, Joel Farmer, Felix Clover, Tom Davis, Alex Collins, Jack Chamberlin, Annelise Bell, Alice Bates, Felicity Bates & Lucy Clover

It was then the turn of the Seniors. We had 3 teams of 6 competing, with each team covering a total Marathon distance (42.2km/26.2 miles equivalent) broken down into 1 x 7.2km, 3 x 5km & 2 x 10km. The course snaked around the grounds of the school, with each lap being just over 1 ½ miles. Sounds easy but it was quite hard work in the heat!

First off were Adam Chamberlin, Sam Cooper and Ryan McNeill on the odd 7.2km lap before handing over to Crystal Murray, Geraldine Suckling and Fiona Holland for the first of the 5k distances over 2 laps of the course.

The first of the 10k runs then followed, with the 4 laps proving to be harder work! Aden Bell, Belinda Godbold and Jo Sargent were

pleased when they had finished and could hand over to Vicky Tapp, Lucy Jay and Deborah Stewart for the next 5k leg. Then followed the final 10k run by Elizabeth Stewart, Katrina Rigby and Neil Holloway before the final 5k run by Joel Bamsey, Maria Ward and Andrew Stewart.

It was a great team effort and out of the 183 teams taking part, Hares finished 50th, 142nd & 166th overall. Everyone agreed that it was nice to relax afterwards with a well-deserved ice-cream!

The Gareth Meredith Memorial Walk

We would like to thank everyone who took part in the walk on Sunday, 16th. July. We were completely overwhelmed by the response. The total donations made by the walkers, plus the many contributions we received personally from non-participants, amounted to a magnificent £1,935. Our own contribution paid off the balance for the full cost of the equipment.

Special thanks must go to:- Jan Devey for liaising with the Health Centre and all advertising; Steven Harvey for help with the signage; Elaine Evans and Connie Tregidon for path clearance; Joanne and Tony Nunn for ‘sweeping up’ after the last walkers left Boxford.

We may try and repeat the walk next year, not as a fundraiser but purely to remember Gareth and enjoy the Suffolk countryside. Thanks again to everyone for making the day an unforgettable experience.

Are you interested in playing Walking Football in Hadleigh?

Every Monday evening between 7-8pm we play Walking Football at Hadleigh High School on the 3G Artifical pitch. We are a friendly group and have players whose ages range from mid to late 40s to over 80 years old, who come along and enjoy being able to play football again. The benefits, besides playing a game you enjoyed in your youth, are, exercise, improving balance and coordination, building fitness and is an excellent way to improve your mental health and reduce stress and of course have fun! Why not give it a go. Come along and watch to see what walking football is all about or come along and join in but you must book a place prior to playing. Hadleigh Cricket Club

Can you believe that we are almost at the end of the 2023 season? By the time you read this, there’ll be just two weekends of cricket left at Friar’s Road! And what a season

it’s been! The start of the season saw the opening of our new decking area, although it’s first use was somewhat delayed by persistent rain which saw several matches washed out. The first two weeks of our junior training met a similar fate, before finally the weather gods got the memo! In June, we received the sad news that our president, Gary Girling had passed away. Its safe to say that he is very much missed, and it was an honour to host his family and friends for a celebration of his life following his funeral. Our annual President’s Day on 27th August was played as a memorial match; and the committee are working on a more permanent memorial to Gary - watch this space.

As it stands, our all but one of our senior sides are pushing for top 3 finishes in their respective leagues, and we’ll share the final positions next month. We have seen some great individual performances this season, including 150 Not Out from Justin Toombs on 29th July, centuries from Jamie Colcomb (his maiden 1st team 100!), Lovejeet Singh (including 2 x 100’s in one weekend!), Oliver Clark, Kudzai Maunze, Taylor Locke and Toby Toombs; 5-wicket hauls from Archie Magnus, Oliver Clark, Matthew Clark and Kyle Tanner, including a hat-trick on 12th August! Our ladies’ team has struggled with availability this season, as many of our younger players have been concentrating on GCSE’s, A-levels and university, but this has improved over the last few weeks. Over the winter months we will be recruiting to regenerate the squad and to avoid a similar scenario next season, so if you are interested in trying a new sport, please do get in touch!

Off the field we will continue to hold our popular social events throughout the off-season, and the community is welcome to join us at any of our upcoming dates…

30 September – Quiz Night

14 October – End of Season Celebration

28 October – Trunk or Treat Hallowe’en Party

18 November – Festive Fair

2 December – HCC Christmas Party (formerly Cheese and Wine!)

We’ll also look to open the bar to show live sport on the big screen each weekend.

With the cricket season over, this now frees up the pavilion for private hirings, so if you’re looking to host an event or party, get in touch with our hirings secretary, Donna, by email (hcchirings@gmail.com).

William Clark - ‘Jock’

Thank you to everyone who attended Dad’s funeral in May and we are pleased to say that we were able to send £187.00 to the RNLI. We would especially like to thank Revd Bryn Rickards at the URC church for funeral services for both mum, (last year) and dad; Kiri, David and the funeral staff at Kingsbury & Saunders; The Hadleigh Surgery; and the staff at Hadleigh Nursing Home who enabled us to bring Dad home to Hadleigh and who provided exemplary care and compassion to both Dad and us for the short time he was there.

Last, but not least, many people will remember Dad walking through the High Street with his ‘dog’ stick, and we wanted his last journey through Hadleigh to be memorable and this was made possible by a lovely piper from the Ipswich Piping Society, Alex Carruthers, who did Dad proud.
