Sudbury’s Ascension Day gift-giving tradition The distribution of gifts on Ascension Day in Sudbury has its origins in two significant dates – first, in 1622 Sudbury draper, Martin Cole, bequeathed that the rental charge from Shalford Mill at Great Henny be used to make up “50 shirts and 50 shifts” and that they should be distributed to local people. He also allocated six shillings and eight pence to pay for a sermon to be preached, and 40 shillings for a ‘corporation feast’. Later in 1668 Sudbury mayor Nathaniel King added to the gesture when he bequeathed his money to pay for 100 six-penny loaves to be shared among the same people who received the shirts – the tradition of the Sudbury Ascension Day gifts was born. Today, these bequests are administered by the Sudbury Municipal Charities, which each year invites people aged over 70 – both men and women – who are residents of Sudbury to apply for the gift, which takes the form of a £30 clothing voucher, which can be redeemed at local stores Winch & Blatch and Roys. This year 48 people applied for the gift. It was the 350th anniversary of Nathaniel King’s bequest that was celebrated yesterday. Sudbury Municipal Charities chairman Keith Robins, dressed in period costume as Nathaniel King, was accompanied by Sudbury Town Mayor Sue Ayres as he made his way through the market place towards St Peter’s where the gift giving ceremony took place. They were accompanied by mace bearers Michael Wheeler and Barry Hibble. Mr Robins said he isn’t aware of any other town that has an Ascension Day tradition of this kind. He said: “To have a tradition that stretches back 350 years is wonderful. “Sudbury is a special town and it is traditions like this that make it the place it is." Ross Bentley

Sudbury Classical! Sudbury Symphony Orchestra pleased to introduce Philippa Barton, our violin soloist who will perform Finzi's Introit and Saint Saens' Havanaise both for violin and orchestra. Philippa is leader of The Norfolk Symphony, Essex and Colchester Symphony orchestras. Graduating from the Royal College of Music, Philippa has an extensive repertoire with major national orchestras such as the BBC Symphony and the London Mozart Players. Balancing alongside her solo performances of Vivaldi concerti, Vaughan WIlliam's Lark Ascending, Chausson's Poeme, Brahm's Concerto for Violin and Cello, Mozart Concerto in A Major, Bruch, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Philippa Barton, many more, Philippa is also busily involved in our violin soloist coaching and teaching. Entering his 2nd symphony into a competition, in 1856, run by the Society Saint Cecile of Bordeaux, Camile Saint-Saens took the first prize with this playful and engaging music, performing it in Paris soon after. This substantial composition features classical and precise passages and with its instant appeal, it finely takes its place in the romantic era and deserves more recognition. Saint-Saens' Havanaise was written for solo violin and accompaniment. It is a dance of a Latin-American style in 2/4 time, alternating rich melody and exciting virtuoso episodes. A short early twentieth century piece for a small orchestra, Butterworth wrote Banks of Green Willow based on English folk tunes, working closely with Vaughan Williams. We hope you will join us for a very special musical evening on Sunday 1 July 2018 at 6.00pm at St Peter’s Church, Market Hill, Sudbury CO10 1TL. Conductor: Matthew Andrews, Soloist: Philippa Barton, Leader: Steve Calder. Saint-Saens: Symphony No 2 and Havonaise; Butterworth: Banks of Green Willow; Finzi: Introit for violin and orchestra. Tickets: Adult £12, Child £2 from Compact Music, North Street, Sudbury and Sudbury Tourist Information. Or email: tickets@sudburysymphonyorchestra.com. A limited number of tickets will be available on the door. www.sudburysymphonyorchestra.com

Andrew Phillips named president of the St Peter’s fundraising campaign committee The campaign to raise funds to transform St Peter’s into a leading cultural venue for Sudbury and the wider region has been given a huge boost after Andrew Phillips OBE was named president of the campaign committee. Andrew is the personification of the spirit of community that exists in Sudbury and nobody is better recognised or respected in the town. He will join Sudbury and Babergh District councillor Simon Barrett who was recently became chairman of the campaign committee. Chair of the Friends of St Peter’s, Oliver Forder said: “I am delighted that community leaders Andrew Phillips and Simon Barrett have agreed to head up the campaign committee. “It gives the St. Peter’s regeneration project a flying start, and it demonstrates the commitment of the people of Sudbury to get this project moving, and provide a first rate cultural and community centre right at the heart of our town.” The news comes after it was announced last month that St Peter’s has received an initial £254,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to start developing plans to transform the medieval building into a venue fit for the 21st century. It is hoped this will be the first tranche of funding from the HLF, which could eventually amount to almost £2million. HLF has said additional funding should be forthcoming as long as certain conditions are met as the regeneration plans take shape. This includes the provision of £500,000 matched funding to release HLF funds of which it is planned that £175,000 will be raised locally. In addition, the Friends of St Peter’s has pledged to contribute £100,000. If all the money is raised, it will pay for the following projects: A contemporary internal new build at the West end providing an improved draft lobby, and a mezzanine floor, meeting and events area; The provision of toilets; An upgrade to the kitchen facilities; The opening of the south chancel; Improved gardens around the building; A new roof and other upgrades to the fabric of the building. Andrew Phillip’s first contribution to the St Peter’s fundraising campaign will be to host an evening with former Secretary of State and Conservative Party chairman, Norman Tebbit, on Saturday June 2nd at St Peter’s. Tickets for the evening event cost £5 in advance and can be purchased via www.stpetersudbury.co.uk. All proceeds to go towards the St Peter’s regeneration fund.
Bildeston's Fabulous French Fête! The merry month of June is upon us and weekends are full of open gardens and village fairs. However, one Fête that you MUST enjoy is the much celebrated Boule-in French Fête in Bildeston (Saturday 23rd - Sunday 1st July: 10am 5pm daily). One of 4 annual events, Fête d'Été (Summer Fête) is a delightful affair, full of French flair and set in a very English garden. Don't be fooled by the unassuming High Street entrance as you are quickly enveloped by an atmosphere of Provence....olive trees and lavender, Rustique to '50's flair - a French Brasserie or Salon de Thé....whatever your taste, this charming event will catch your imagination. "We love presenting our seasonal Fêtes, especially the summer one as we have such an emphasis on the garden with tons of furniture, gorgeous tubs, urns and plants for sale!" enthuses Cathy Bullen who, together with her ex military husband Peter, runs this thriving business. "It's our aim to create a magical setting, a very different shopping experience - and a highly enjoyable day out for our visitors. We want to share the joi de vivre that we take such pleasure in during our months away in France and we are thrilled to be able to raise substantial donations to support some fabulous British charities at the same time..." All in all this is one Fête, among the many in June, you can't fail to enjoy - and the coffee's good too! Fête d'Été runs Saturday 23rd June - Sunday 1st July 10am - 5pm daily www.boule-in.co.uk

New tenants in Glemsford are settling into their homes as Babergh completes the first of a number of new council housing development. Babergh Councillors met the Farrant family, who have recently moved in to one of the new homes. The family – Karl, Maxine and their two daughters, Shannon and Katie Green – have a local link to the village and a long history in the community. Work began on site at Hammond Croft, Glemsford in December 2016 and has delivered nine 2 bedroom houses and six 3 bedroom houses. All the homes were advertised through Gateway to Home Choice and priority was given to people with local links to the area. These new homes are part of Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ joint project to deliver 65 new council homes across both districts. New government initiatives have made it easier for local authorities to build their own homes and both councils seized the opportunity. In May 2014, the councils appointed Havebury Housing Partnership, as their development partner and after securing a ÂŁ1m grant from Government, work began on building 27 new homes in Babergh and 38 in Mid Suffolk. All the eight schemes have now been completed and these include: Meadow Close, Lavenham – 12x1 bed flats Mill Road, Laxfield – 3x 2 bed bungalows Schoolfield, Glemsford – 9x2 bed houses, 6x3 bed houses Oakley Fields, Thurston – wheelchair accessible 3 bed bungalow Acton Close, Bramford – 2 x 2 bed houses Fox Meadow, Barking – 2x2 bed houses and 1x2 bed bungalow Kingfisher Drive, Gt Blakenham – 4 x1 bed flats, 10x2 bed houses, 9x2 bed bungalow These homes will be run and managed by both councils and will form part of their housing stock. Cllr Jan Osborne, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing said, “We are mounting a big drive to build more supported housing throughout Babergh, and it is always heart-warming to see the results of that work. It was wonderful to meet the Farrants and hear their experiences of moving into the new homes in Glemsford. But we are not going to rest on our laurels: we have more supported housing developments planned, and I look forward to seeing many more families move into new homes just like the Farrants.â€? Maxine Farrant said: “It took us a week to move in, but now we have so much more space. We’re looking forward to the summer when the whole family can enjoy the new garden.â€?

Hundreds of beer matts handed out to support growing local charity
Units 7 & 8 Addison Road, Chilton Industrial Estate, Sudbury, Suffolk CO10 2YW
Tel: 01787 376576 Fax: 01787 376526 E-mail: sudbury@howdens.com Prince of Wales landlord Duncan Tuhey with members of the Just Talk Campaign Natalie Wiggins, Lois Lovering, Sharon Kendall, Glenda Roberts and Mark Joiner Hundreds of beer matts are to be placed in pubs around a market town in support of a campaign to support people with emotional and mental health issues. The unique beer matts have been designed by the Sudbury based Just Talk Campaign and were officially launched this week at the town’s Prince of Wales pub. The pub is officially supporting the campaign and has already raised hundreds of pound towards the initiative. The Just Talk Campaign, which recently received official registered charitable status, offers support to people needing help with emotional and mental health issues. It was launched by leading psychotherapist Glenda Roberts and counsellor Sharon Kendall in 2016 following a number of suicides in the Sudbury area. Ms Roberts, said: “We thought the beer matts were a really good idea to help us reach out to more people. They have a really quirky design with the slogan ‘cheers to good mental health’ and with the campaigns contact details on them. “We launched the beer matts at the Prince of Wales and we thank them for their continued support. We will now start handing out the beer matts to other establishments in the town. This is another way of us letting people know help is available to anyone who may be suffering with emotional problems.” The Just Talk Campaign holds free monthly drop-in sessions where people can discuss any problem they may have in confidence with trained experienced counsellors without needing to book an appointment. The campaign also offers affordable one-to-one counselling services with a trainee counsellor who is on placement with the charity. This has already helped many local people, some who were suicidal, to cope with their problems. Meanwhile, the Prince of Wales pub has been praised for its support for the campaign by South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge. The pub recently raised hundreds of pound for the campaign at recent casino night. It has also launched a six-month campaign where it is donating 5p for every drink sold during every live televised sporting events. In the letter to the pub Mr Cartlidge said: “Your admirable efforts have not gone unnoticed and your support for the people of South Suffolk is much appreciated.” Prince of Wales landlord, Duncan Tuhey, said: “We are great believers in just Talk Campaign and we are proud they chose us as the venue from which to launch the beer matt initiative. We are also pleased to receive the letter from the MP, as it is nice to see our efforts are being recognised.” Further information about the Just Talk Campaign can be found at www.justtalkcampaign.co.uk. Contact can also be made by email info@justtalkcampaign.co.uk or by telephone 0330 120 0279.

‘Puts Others In The Shade’
Last month I was delighted to host a meeting with Councillors from South Suffolk’s parishes regarding neighbourhood plans. The meeting, which was held at Hadleigh Town Hall, was well attended with representatives from many of the villages across the constituency. The purpose of the meeting was clear; I wanted to impress upon those gathered the necessity of drawing up a neighbourhood plan, and allocating sites within that plan. A neighbourhood plan is a way for parishes, or groups of them, to have greater control over development in their area. The plans cannot stop development but there is no doubt that a community without such a plan will be more vulnerable to speculative development than one with a made plan and where – crucially – they have used the plan to allocate sites for new housing. What does ‘allocating sites’ mean and why it is so significant? The answer is that I have not known a community yet that is unable to answer fairly forthrightly the question of where they don’t want development to go. Allocating sites is the much harder question for communities of where they do want it. But by going through that process and drawing up a plan with a reasonable allocation of homes for the future, the neighbourhood plan has far greater weight in law. I would describe this as the classic trade-off between ‘pain’ and ‘gain’. There is no point denying that the process for a community to allocate sites could be very controversial and divisive. But going through that pain brings the gain of far greater control in future, and the likelihood that housing numbers in the area will be more sustainable than in the absence of such a plan. Of course, neighbourhood plans are not just about the number of homes, but also about the type and design of new developments. Hence, given the importance of these subjects to my constituents, I hope that my meeting can be a catalyst for communities to get activated and plan for a sustainable future.

Sudbury Choral Society’s Summer Concert 2018 After their excellent rendition of “The Creation” by Haydn in their Spring concert, Sunday 24th June sees the Sudbury Choral Society move from their standard fare of oratorios and classical music to “Songs of the Sea”. The choir along with Bures CECV Primary school Choir will be singing in a variety of styles and genre’s whilst they perform Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose. This cantata was written by Alexander L’Estrange as a celebration for the raising of the Mary Rose, King Henry VIII’s famous warship which sank off Portsmouth in 1545. It contains a very cleverly written mixture of folk songs, sea shanties and music from the Tudor period. To go alongside this there will be other nautically themed pieces to make up what we hope will be an entertaining afternoon’s concert. St Peter’s Church, Market Hill Sudbury, 3:30 p.m. on Sunday 24th June 2018 Cost Adults £12, 11-16s £4, under 11s free, Refreshments included. 1520 - 1677 Immigrants then already? Many continental artists came to England in these years and were preferred by the aristocracy to native born painters. Amongst the many that came were Holbein, Peter Lely, Van Dyck and Rubens. The impact of these ‘immigrants’ on English art and art practise, and the legacy they left, is the subject of an Arts Society Sudbury lecture at the Quay Theatre on Tuesday 26 June from 10.30 – 13:00 and non-members are welcome. It is a rare opportunity to hear a National Gallery lecturer and guide, Leslie Primo, who is an able and lively speaker who lectures in many museums and to art groups. Tickets, including coffee and biscuits, are £22. To book a place you’ll need to phone Maren Mauder (01787 829142)
Health Foods for You Zero Waste Project We are living within an outdated linear economy of production, consumption and disposal. The zero waste mentality is to switch the whole system to a circular economy, which aims on keeping things in continuous rotation and out of landfill. This isn’t to be confused with the recycling economy, which delays the journey to landfill, but winds up there eventually after using lots of energy and resources to keep it in use until then. At Health Foods For You we have a selection of organic loose, self-serve products for you to choose from. This includes grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruit and loose-leaf teas. Why organic? We believe organic farming is the natural way and ‘organic food’ should in fact just be called ‘food’,. So rest assured that everything sold in the Zero waste dispensers is organic How it works in our shop STEP 1. Place any empty container on the scales STEP 2. Fill your container with desired product. STEP 3. Place the container back onto the scale. We work out your price, then pay for your product! We are huge advocates of reusing over recycling so please bring along any container that you like; a mason jar, jam jar, ice cream tub or lunchbox, if it can be weighed, it can be used! If ever you forget to bring a container of your own, feel free to use one of our biodegradable bags. If you are new to the zero-waste experience and selfserving in general, please don’t hesitate to ask for assistance and we can show you how effortless it is to take back control of your food, getting the amount you need. Shopping this way is simple to do, empowering to you, the customer, and fun for the whole family to get involved in. When the golden retrievers arrive at Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Hadleigh, there are instant smiles on the faces of residents Owner Valerie Lavender of Coram Street, Hadleigh, is proud of the magical effect that her three dogs have on people who, in some cases, are living with dementia. Mrs Lavender, of Coram Street, Hadleigh, has bred and shown golden retrievers at Crufts for 40 years and signed up to the charity Pets as Therapy (PAT) three years ago following visits to St Helena Hospice in Colchester to see her friend. “The dogs were such a tonic, lifting people’s spirits, that they asked me to come back,” she said. “I love my dogs and they are such a pleasure to share.” Mrs Stevens, the home’s activities coordinator, said: “Seeing the dogs can trigger happy memories for people living with dementia Resident June Ede and they cheer up everyone they come in with Flora contact with. “For many of our residents had dogs and other pets throughout their lives and some lived on farms with dogs around them.” She said the dogs were very calm and they had a calming effect on the people petting them. “After the dogs’ weekly visits, you notice a lasting effect with some people, they seem happier,” said Mrs Stevens. Operations manager Helen Gosling said pet therapy played an important role at all Kingsley Healthcare care homes. “PAT dogs are very popular but people love to see other animals they may have had as pets when they were younger,” she said. Mrs Lavender urged other dog owners to support Pets as Therapy by visiting the website https://petsastherapy.org/join-us/join-pat-dog/ .She said: “It’s important that dogs have the right temperament and you will be asked to go along to a pet supermarket for an assessment. “The assessor will jump out in front of the dog and make noises to test their reaction; they will see their reaction to children and people in wheelchairs.”
Leaders line up more Q&A after Sudbury success Following the success of their first public Question & Answer event in Sudbury, the Leader and Deputy Leader of Babergh District Council are planning to hold more. Babergh District Council Leader Cllr John Ward and Deputy Leader Cllr Jan Osborne held their first event in Sudbury on Saturday 28 April, giving residents the chance to speak directly to the council’s leadership and ask their questions. After a great response, plans are being drawn up for a second event this summer in Shotley, and a third later this year in Hadleigh, allowing Babergh residents more opportunities to talk to the council’s leaders. These plans follow the positive response to the first event, which saw many people come into Sudbury Town Hall to discuss their concerns, priorities and views with Cllrs Ward and Osborne. Cllr John Ward, Leader of Babergh District Council, said: “Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with us last weekend: we hope they all left with a better understanding of who we are and what Babergh District Council does. The turnout was so good it proved the demand is there for this sort of direct engagement, and we plan to hold more of these events later this year.” Cllr Jan Osborne, Deputy Leader of Babergh District Council, said: “It was wonderful to meet so many people with a real interest in what Babergh does, and being able to help them and answer their questions made my day. I’m looking forward to hosting more question and answer sessions for residents.”

On Saturday June 16, Sudbury Rotary will be holding two important events in St Peter’s, Sudbury: a Charity Auction at noon and our annual “Last Night of the Proms” concert, with Long Melford Silver Band and local soprano Evie Press. Items already donated for the Auction by Rotarians and local businesses include a two-hour drive in a 1927 Humber Tourer, a water colour painting from a member of the Society of Botanical Artists, a day’s pigeon shooting, bed and breakfast at Hill House, a week’s holiday at a chalet in North Wales, lunch or dinner for two at The Mill Hotel and lunch or dinner for two at The Secret Garden, bottles of wine, whisky and champagne. All donors will be acknowledged in the catalogue and on each item given. The Auction and the “Prom” are the last two fund-raising events of President Lesley’s year. Money raised will be donated to Compassion (supporting victims of domestic violence) and the Kernos counselling centre, both based in Sudbury. One special, original artwork has been donated by the Kader Foundation in East Meru, Tanzania, and the funds raised from that particular item will go direct to support skills training for teenagers who would otherwise be living on the streets. Viewing will begin at 11.30 on June 16, with the auction being led by Rotarian Richard Kemsley from 12 noon. Refreshments will be available before and during the event. Then on the evening of June 16 the ever-popular annual Rotary Prom Concert will take place. This year Rotary is pleased to welcome back Long Melford Silver Band who will be offering a superb programme of well-known music, as well as the traditional ‘Last Night of the Proms’ pieces at the end of the second half. Union Jacks and other prom items will be available at the Concert. As a special treat this year, local soprano Evie Press will be singing four songs from her repertoire. Evie has recently been offered a place at Junior Guildhall and Junior Royal Academy of Music in London from September 2018. She has a growing reputation as a fine singer, so do come along to enjoy both the music offered by the Silver Band and the lovely voice of Evie. Tickets for the Prom (priced at only £10 each) will be available from Compact Music in North Street, Sudbury and from the Tourist Centre in Sudbury Library, as well as from Rotarians or direct from the President: telephone 01787 372171. We recently visited Fulibroch Dairy at Bures St Mary to see their herd of pedigree Toggenburg goats and we watched the feeding of the recentlyarrived kids. The goats are hand-milked and this is available in 1 litre bottles. It can be consumed cold for drinking, used in cooking and is excellent for cheese making. The whole enterprise aims to be self-sufficient. Our visit included delicious coffee and cake and many members purchased some of their luxurious hand-made soap. Afterward we continued to the Thatchers Arms, Mount Bures with its attractive views across the Stour Valley and enjoyed a pub lunch. We held our “Assembly” meeting recently where our plans for the forthcoming Presidential year, which begins in July, were presented. Much of this will be a continuation of our existing activities : Crucial Crew, Kids Out, the annual Schools concert, the Christmas Tree Festival, Tree of Memories, Santa’s Grotto, the annual Prom Concert, work supporting Sudbury Carers, our Schools’ Nature and Environment Programme, encouraging local schools to visit SVEN and River Stour Trust activities, work with senior schools preparing for the “world of work”, finding and supporting candidates for the Rotary Youth Leadership award, working with local and international schools to provide “School in a Bag” in developing countries, funding for our existing projects in East Meru, Tanzania and in Mali, Lend with Care which provides small shortterm loans to enable businesses to get started in developing countries as well as fund-raising and other support for our three local charities next year and of course, collections for disaster relief which arise unfortunately all too frequently, New initiatives this coming year include setting up Rotakids in one of our primary schools, launching the Sudbury Rotary Community Forum (of which more later) an apple-pressing event and a “President’s concert” to promote and celebrate local talent. All of this, together with “Friends of Rotary” comes under the umbrella of “Rotary in Sudbury” So there is much going on and plenty to do! Why not come and meet us, there’s something for everybody. Why not come to one of our lunches – to see what we are like and to hear about what we do! – please get in touch. We like to think that we combine fun and fellowship whilst helping others. Lunches take place on Mondays at 12.30pm for 1pm at the Mill Hotel. Just let us know in advance and in any case if you would like more information about our club and our activities please contact our secretary Roger Green on 07341 290415 or look us up on our updated website www.sudburyrotary.com or simply Google Sudbury Rotary Club Rotarian Tony Platt

A wonderfully royal wedding and a reminder to protect your interests By Holmes & Hills Solicitors The recent royal wedding no doubt got the many other couples getting married this year excited about their own wedding day. Perhaps it also acted as a reminder to finalise the last of the arrangements. It reminded us here at Holmes & Hills about the importance of Pre-Nuptial Agreements. Although Pre-Nuptial Agreements are certainly not romantic they are practical and as family lawyers we are now drafting more and more of them for couples, young and old, eager to protect their interests. Although PreNuptial Agreements are not part of legislation in this country, the Courts can take a Pre-Nuptial Agreement into account when looking at how to divide the matrimonial assets in divorce proceedings. When the matrimonial Court look at how to divide the matrimonial assets in divorce proceedings a Court will consider all the circumstances of the case, the first consideration being to the welfare of any child of the family whilst under 18. The Court has a duty to achieve fairness and can look at a PreNuptial Agreement as part of the circumstances in the case. A Pre-Nuptial Agreement should provide for any children of the family or have provision for any future children after the Agreement. The Court will want to make sure that both parties have received full disclosure of the other party’s financial circumstances; have had independent legal advice and fully understood the advice and terms of the Pre-Nuptial Agreement. Your Pre-Nuptial Agreement can and should be tailored to your individual circumstances. We all enter into a marriage with the very best of intentions and hopes for the future, however, divorce and separation are a reality that impacts a lot of people. Divorce and separation can also be a very emotionally difficult time. A Pre-Nuptial Agreement can assist the parties in dividing their assets at that time thus avoiding negotiation, confrontation, disputes and unnecessary cost at the time of divorce or separation. When communication is good you can clearly detail exactly how you would want your assets to be divided in the event of separation or divorce in the future. We can address any issues that arise and provide for them. More and more couples are seeing the benefits of Pre-Nuptial Agreements and they certainly have their advantages. Holmes & Hills Solicitors provide expert advice on pre-nuptial agreements and are able to draft you a pre-nuptial agreement tailored to your and your partner’s circumstances and wishes, providing you an excellent foundation for your years ahead. Holmes & Hills in Sudbury regularly has availability for Saturday appointments. Holmes & Hills Solicitors, 96 North Street, Sudbury www.holmes-hills.co.uk. 01787 275275

Long Melford Parish Report Councillor Richard Kemp Tresco, New Road, Long Melford, Suffolk CO10 9JY 01787 378149 richard.kemp@suffolk.gov.uk
Pothole Repairs It was recently reported that Suffolk County Council had repaired 6500 potholes since the start of the year. However, there are still a number of issues with the way Highways carry out their repairs, and this headline figure does not paint an accurate picture of the situation in Suffolk. The Highways team are currently struggling to keep up with the need for repairs across the county, and so are resorting to temporary repairs which are quicker to complete than permanent repairs. They have recently introduced a more expensive temporary material that is supposed to last slightly longer. However, these pothole repairs will undoubtedly need to be repeated in the coming months as the temporary material deteriorates. Whether this represents value for money for Suffolk residents is an important question. Suffolk Highways have also stated that they are “blitzingâ€? whole areas of the road at once, rather than making multiple trips to the same area. However, it is important to note that they will only repair potholes that meet their intervention criteria. I have attached a copy of the “Defect Response Matrixâ€? at the end of this report, which outlines the minimum size a pothole needs to be for it be repaired by Suffolk Highways. Further information on the pothole repairs policy can be found within the Suffolk Highway Maintenance Operational Plan, available at: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/assets/Roads-andtransport/how-we-manage-highway-maintenance/Suffolk-HighwayMaintenance-Operational-Plan.pdf Whether a pothole will be repaired (and in what time frame) depends on: (1) the type of road; (2) the diameter of the pothole; and (3) the depth of the pothole. Chilton Woods Development moves forward The Cabinet has agreed to proceed with the Chilton Woods development as an “upfront land saleâ€?, meaning land will be sold to developers, either in lots or as a whole, who will then work on the development over a 10 year period. The development is expected to deliver 1150 homes and supporting infrastructure, including highways improvements and a new primary school. 25% of these homes have been designated as affordable. Furthermore, the scheme includes 15ha of employment land which is expected to provide 1900 new jobs. The Cabinet agreed to set aside ÂŁ2.7m of funding for the development, to be released over the next 10 years. Furthermore, they will be seeking Government funding in partnership with the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership to enable the delivery of employment as soon as possible.

Here we go again. Once the nesting season gets under way the influx of baby birds and chicks starts and Mum is kept busy responding to the constant demand for food. In between the feeding sessions Hettie, the ex battery hen wanders around the sleeping dogs, softly clucking and scratching at the floor then wanders out again to dig up Mum’s plant pots. She must have developed a dislike of communal living because she ‘don’t dish the dirt with the rest of the girls’. Instead Hettie prefers her own little nesting box in our back porch where she sleeps and lays her eggs. If you read this in time you may like to visit us at our Summer Sale, 12-4pm 2nd June at Newton Green Village Hall. Lots to buy including nearly new evening and prom dresses, ladies fashions and accessories. We will also be at the Long Melford Street Fair, 2-7pm on 1st July and the Great Cornard Fete, 2pm at the Stevenson Centre Recreation Ground then on 29th July is our Open Day and Fun Dog Show, midday to 4pm. We would be really grateful for some top class raffle prizes, if you have anything suitable please leave a message on the ansaphone to arrange collection. Bell, Book & Candle Sudbury Dramatic Society based at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre, are about to follow up their successful May production with the magical comedy romance, Bell, Book and Candle by John Van Druten, offering just the right feel for a summer’s evening which is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 10th to Saturday 14th July at 7.45pm. Gillian Holroyd is a thoroughly modern witch, but if she falls in love it is said that she will lose her powers. When, guided by her cat Pyewacket, she casts a spell to make her attractive neighbour in the flat upstairs fall in love with her, she is unprepared for the outcome. And, as he discovers her deception and decides to take drastic measures to stop her, is she about to lose everything? Said to have been the original inspiration for the TV series Bewitched; Bell, Book and Candle is being directed by Linda Dowdall, who directed the The Railway Children at The Quay last summer. Linda says, ‘a sense of fun pervades the whole play so come along and enjoy some magic, a frothy love story, a lifelike cat, and a mix that is just right for those magical summer days, whatever the weather! In fact the magic in Bell, Book and Candle begins on a Christmas Eve in the recent past, and involves some delightful other characters, including Gillian’s eccentric aunt who is also a witch, her self-absorbed brother and a somewhat dishevelled writer - who thinks he knows all about witches! Bell, Book and Candle is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 10th to Saturday 14th July at 7.45pm and tickets are available now from The Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaysudbury.com

On Saturday 12th May SBN GC Youth Shield league matches began as we hosted a young team from Elsenham golf club. Due to a late withdrawal from 1 of our players Toby Toombs (aged 9) got a call up and enthusiastically joined the team! A great afternoon was had by all, the rain held off and all the matches were played in a great spirit even though there was a large handicap difference between the sides. The SBN boys were a real credit to the club playing their matches in a way we can all be proud of eliciting real admiration from the visiting parents and players. A note also has to go to the Elsenham players who smiled all day even though outclassed and were a genuine pleasure to host. The first 4 matches were a handicap mismatch with our team of Sam Nixon, Max Toombs, Harry English and Isaac Toombs playing really well and gaining comprehensive victories. The best match however was the last match where Toby took on a player of the same age and only slightly lower handicap, Toby had never played the constable course off the white tees before leading to some apprehension from the team’s ‘staff’!! However he was brimming with confidence and reassured us all he would be fine before stepping up and hitting his drive on the 1st not only over the water but also over the trees and onto the fairway with a slight draw shape!! Going 1 up after this fine drive he never looked back. His personal highlight being hitting the 8th par 3 green off the tee to 12 foot before sinking the putt for birdie. His opponent however fought back from 5 down at one stage to only 2 down after 13. As the other matches had finished it was a joy to watch Sam and his opponent then caddy for their younger team mates whilst the rest of the teams walked along supporting their player. ‘Tour pro’ Toby as he was then nicknamed seemed to relish having a caddy as he then upped his game again winning both 14 and 15 for a 4 and 3 victory and completing a 5-0 team victory to get our campaign under way.
