Final finishing touches at Hadleigh Pool! A new swimming pool in Hadleigh has reached its final milestone, after it was officially opened following final finishing touches to the building. The modernised swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure has now been officially opened by councillors, Abbeycroft Leisure representatives and partners. It’s part of a £2.4m investment by Babergh District Council, and its partner Abbeycroft Leisure, to modernise swimming facilities at the council-owned centre. The project has also been supported with £200k provided by Hadleigh Town Council, and a Sports England grant of £150k. The upgrades now compliment the other modern spaces at the centre including the gym, and community and social rooms. St Mary's Church of England Primary School in Hadleigh, Hadleigh High School, and the Hadleigh Dementia Alliance group also helped inspire the pool’s unique sunshade designed by local artist Jo Chapman. A selection of the groups’ artwork can be found on permanent display at the centre which explore themes such as the importance of wellbeing and exercise, the pool environment, local landscape and more. ...continued on page 3

Your partner needs help with their financial affairs, but can you assist? Commonly with married couples or those in a long-term relationship they each have assets in their own name and in joint names (e.g. bank accounts and the family home). This often leads people to think that they can manage the financial affairs of their spouse or partner, or could do if the need arose; however, this is not the case. Unfortunately, should your spouse or partner become unable to manage their affairs themselves, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and you will not be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. What is needed to be able to help - To assist with your spouse or partner’s affairs during their lifetime you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means your spouse or partner will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) with a specialist solicitor. What happens if I do not have LPAs? - Many people need to assist with these matters because their spouse or partner has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident. If you want to help your partner with financial decisions and they did not have Powers of Attorney in place, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney - LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of LPA: Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home). Health and welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves. People often think that if necessary, they would be able to make decisions about where their spouse or partner receives care, what type of care they receive and whether or not they should receive life-sustaining treatment. Without an LPA in place, relatives are not able to make these decisions. Our August walk on Saturday 14th will start at the Hintlesham George and is a circular walk of 10 miles. As usual we will depart at 0930. Our route passes Chattisham Coles Green Fm, then either across to Park House to Jermyns Fm or Apple Tree Fm and again to Jermyns Fm (the reason for the uncertainty is that we have encountered some thuggish cows in the past and may decide to avoid them). The route then proceeds through Little Wenham, Vauxhall, Orchard Lea and back to Hintlesham. The walk will take nearly 4 hours and we will have 2 short stops enroute. If anyone intends to have lunch at the George there is parking on request at the rear or alternatively at the Community Centre. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at this time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. There’s always something special about seeing customers enjoying new facilities and having a splash after months of hard work by everyone involved. “The pool and our other new facilities in Sudbury, will play a huge part in supporting our residents’ health, fitness and wellbeing for generations to come – and form a key step towards achieving the aims set out in our Leisure, Sport & Physical Activity Strategy. “We look forward to working with our partners on more exciting projects as part of our Invest in Hadleigh programme over the coming years.” Tracey Loynds, development director at Abbeycroft Leisure, said: “The new pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure is fantastic and a real testament to partnership working - we’re thrilled our customers have been able to enjoy these new facilities. “This was obviously a huge project for us and for the people of Hadleigh, which we hope will support the community to get more active. “Government restrictions of course still remain in place for the time being so please remember to book your visit on our website before heading over to try out the pool.” Built by local firm Rose Builders, the new facilities include; • Brand new pool with five 25 metre lanes of Sport England competition standard sauna • Spectator seating • Improved disabled access to the pool via easy access steps and handrail, and pool pod lift • Changing Places toilet and shower facility • Exterior sunshade and artwork designed by community groups and local artist Jo Chapman • Access through to the existing changing facilities, refurbished in 2010 • As well as a new plant room, and storage for swimming club and pool equipment The pool has been open since the Spring to avoid unnecessary disruption for members while finishing touches were put in place. This followed the easing of lockdown back in April and £182k funding from the Government’s National Leisure Recovery Fund to support the Covid-recovery of the council’s two leisure centres. Final steps to re-landscape the former pool area into park land, to ensure the build results in no net loss of open space, are expected to be completed by the Autumn.

Hadleigh Choral Society Soon the joyful strains of choral singing will once again fill the Ansell Center as Hadleigh Choral Society starts rehearsals for their autumn program featuring Vivaldi's Gloria and Schubert's Mass in G. Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Charity For the past few years we have had a project delivering Christmas Stockings to disadvantaged children in Belarus. Last year due to the pandemic we were unable to even get the presents to Belarus to be distributed on our behalf. However, we did manage to find a service that we could pay to take the stockings to Ukraine so the project was delivered successfully. Due to Covid plus the recent events in Belarus it is highly unlikely that we will be able to go to Belarus this year but have decided the Christmas project will definitely be going ahead in Ukraine. We hope to travel out early December to deliver the stockings to children in schools and homes. The children have already been allocated by our contact in Ukraine and we have transport arranged to take the stockings on ahead of our arrival. However, as with all transport, this comes at a cost. People within the Charity have provided stockings full of goodies and we are now looking for sponsors to cover the cost of carriage to Ukraine. For only £3.50 per stocking you can sponsor a child, you may choose whether a boy or girl and you will receive the name of the child/ren you sponsor plus a photograph will be sent to you on our return showing the child receiving the gift which will be given in your name. Sports & Wellbeing Week - We had so much Fun! Well, what a super week we have had! The children all enjoyed their sports mornings while earning points for their house cup. We could hear them cheering each other on from the other side of the school! This was followed by each class taking part in their ‘Your Needs Met’ session with Suffolk Minds. We currently have a Wellbeing focus in school and so this training will allow the whole school to share a common language around emotional needs and wellbeing, which will help to support everyone. We supplemented our Wellbeing focus with a fruit pastel challenge - you can see the concentration on the faces of the children sat with their eyes shut in the picture below.

The Makaton version of 'The Fight Song' was our next project as we are not currently permitted to sing in school. This has quickly become one of our school favourites and can be heard playing Celebration outdoor our during Assemblies on a Friday morning apologies to the residents of Hintlesham, as sometimes it can be a little loud to try to match the children's enthusiasm! After another July downpour some of our bedraggled ladies could be heard laughing and chatting as they exercised the rescued dogs in the garden. Bev has been helping at SESAW for three years in between caring for her own horses. She thinks people don’t realise that cleaning kennels is mucky, hard work particularly in the winter, “the TV programmes make it look so glamorous”. Seven years ago, Debbie chose to work four full days a week leaving a day for volunteering. She says it is rewarding to spend time with the dogs, building their trust through kindness. “Everyone is so friendly and it is wonderful to see the dogs go to new, loving homes.” Enthusiastic helpers, Judy and Ivy agree, they both help with animal care, sorting donated goods and fundraising. Despite the tough times, no matter what they’ve been through, our volunteers keep coming for love of the animals. After suffering an arm injury in the Spring, Debbie recruited her husband as chauffeur cum dog walker for a few weeks! We are lucky to have equally dedicated volunteers each day but the numbers are dwindling due to various life changes. If you have what it takes to care for the animals, help with general maintenance or assist with fundraising, please contact us and don’t forget to leave your phone number. Despite yet another shower, the tired friends still look happy as they head for home and the resident dogs head for the kitchen, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Throughout the worst of the pandemic ‘returning to normal’ has sounded like a distant and unbelievable prospect. But a return to something like pre-Covid life is now possible following the lifting of restrictions in mid-July. Of course, it’s not as simple as suddenly waking up to a day of zero Covid-19 and life exactly as it always was - if only. Certainly, the PM is surely right to stress that for all that the legal lockdown has lifted, we must remain cautious. It’s about balancing freedom and responsibility. To do this, we must remember how extraordinary it was for the state to legislate to close businesses overnight that had been built up over many years; how unprecedented it was that we passed laws on the number of people allowed in a private home; how we banned all kinds of wonderful human activities (e.g. golf, or singing in a choir); how we removed freedoms and halted the pastimes that define our culture. This was a state of emergency justifying extreme measures; but the emergency has passed, even if Covid-19 has not completely vanished. Some will argue that while the virus is prevalent it is ‘foolhardy’ to end lockdown. However, the fact is that we cannot realistically hope to eradicate all Covid-19, we have to learn to live with the disease and stop the position of removing fundamental human liberty to avoid pressure on hospitals. Naturally, we all want our hospitals to be as fully functioning as possible, but the agenda must now move to reopening sensibly; driving our economic recovery; and in turn tackling our deficit and raising the revenues to fund the greatest possible effort to bear down on Covid-19 backlogs, from the courts, to HGV licence testing, to those waiting for elective surgery. And I am bound to point out that there is a catch in the lockdown lifting, and it goes ‘ping’. The rules around self-isolation for the double jabbed will not change until mid-August, which has naturally caused a more restrained reopening. But the direction of travel is clear: as a result of our brilliant vaccine program, we are finally on the road to a brighter future.

Hadleigh Old School A Flamboyance of Flowers September will be blooming at Hadleigh Old School, the arts and entertainment venue at 5 Bridge Street. First, the gardens will be open as part of Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh – please enter via the main door from the pavement on 4 September from 11am-5pm. Then from the 16th to 26th September the hall stages a gallery show by leading botanical artist Sandra Wall Armitage. Hadleigh Hollyhocks (pictured), a large watercolour by Sandra, was chosen as a cover image for Plantae 2021, the national showcase of the Society of Botanical Artists – noted as exhibiting excellence in all art that is plant related. The picture was based on hollyhocks growing in a high street garden in Hadleigh, together with Sandra’s own specimens in Chelsworth. It has been likened to a skyscraper of flowers, as these magnificent blooms tower in their magnificence. Sandra Wall Armitage has won many awards for her creations, both academic and popular – including the People’s Choice and the Daler Rodney Award for her work ‘Prickly Bunch’ which featured thistles. For many years she was a leading commercial artist commissioned to create greetings cards, textile, and fabric designs. Her latest show will include cards and prints as well as many of her newer ‘freer’ paintings created in a cottage garden in rural Suffolk. Sunflowers compete with the Hollyhocks for the tallest show-offs, while other pictures include giant poppies, lavender, and pinks. Flower beds have recently been shown in research, to encourage just as much insect diversity as the wild countryside, they are a pollinator’s paradise, and a magnet for bees. If you wish to be inspired by nature in all its colourful glory, please do come to this exhibition. Entry is free with the gallery open from 11am-5pm each day from 16 to 26th September 2021. Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group Members of the group, together with relatives and friends, continue to support the Practice during the Covid vaccination sessions. In an effort to accommodate the work pattern of younger patients most recent sessions have been early morning, late afternoon, early evening and all day Saturday. The reduction between jabs from eleven to eight weeks resulted in a concentrated effort on 17th July with a total of 700 vaccines given that day. If you still haven’t had your second jab please contact the Practice after 10a.m to find out when it will be possible. Many volunteers have been helping with the programme since January 2021 while others have given their time when possible. With more scope for visiting and holidays volunteer numbers have reduced considerably so new recruits are always welcome. Contact Jan Devey for information. Aiming to open in early September, the company specialises in hand dyed yarns and accessories for the discerning knitter and crocheter. The company only sells yarns that are ethically sourced from responsible yarn dyers around the world. Emma’s Yarn, a high quality brand from Florida is exclusively stocked by Yarn Worx in the UK and the new shop will have a wall of colour devoted entirely to this brand. Volunteers needed for a wild summer of reading! The Summer Reading Challenge is The Reading Agency and Libraries Present coming and Suffolk Libraries is looking for volunteers to help support the country’s biggest literacy campaign. The Summer Reading Challenge is a fun way of encouraging children to keep up their reading skills over the long summer holidays. It challenges 411 year olds to read six books with stickers and other rewards as incentives. This year is particularly special as it Summer Reading should hopefully mark the return to a Challenge 2021 more normal summer of activities in libraries after the campaign ran online in 2020. The theme for 2021 is Wild World Heroes with the aim of raising awareness of the environment and the threat to the world’s wildlife. Volunteers are needed to support children to complete the challenge and chat to them about the books they’ve read. Anyone aged 12 and over can sign up to volunteer and it’s great experience for young people. It’s fun, rewarding and it looks good on your CV. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit suffolklibraries.co.uk-src-2021 or speak to their local library. The summer reading challenge itself will run throughout the summer holidays. Children can sign up for free at their local library and will receive a special collector poster for their stickers. After the pandemic it’s more important than ever to encourage younger children not to fall behind with their reading over the summer holidays. Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Suffolk Owl Sanctuary Visit Children in Goldcrest and Robin class enjoyed a trip to the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on Tuesday 22nd June. They had a wonderful day whilst enjoying minibeast hunts and the owl flying display. Baylham Rare Breeds Farm Visit Children in Kingfisher class enjoyed a trip to Baylham Rare Breeds Farm on Thursday 24th June. They toured the farm and visited all of the animals and took part in some fire building. Arger Fen Trip Year 5 pupils enjoyed another summer term visit to Arger Fen. They took part in lots of forest school activities. The weather was kind to them on both occasions.

Sunflower Planting Robin class enjoying planting their sunflowers in the front garden! U11 Quad Kids Year 6 pupils joined in with a Quad Kids event at Hadleigh High School on Friday 25th June. It was a great opportunity to catch up with their pyramid friends after such a long lockdown! Year 6 Leavers’ Year 6 pupils enjoyed a final trip together at the Suffolk Ski Centre taking part in Tobogganing with lunch. Camp Fire Wild Adventure To end our summer term, year 5 & 6 enjoyed a camping experience in the school groups joined by Whatfield pupils. CACI HUT NAIL TREATMENTS

Hadleigh Cycling Club’s “Summer of Cycling” promotion has really taken off with events and social rides galore and over 50 cyclists taking advantage of the £10 adult membership offer (up to 31/12/22). The annual Gayford Flyer Cycle Sportive will take place on Sunday, 12th September. There will be new routes of 30 and 60 miles and it is £15 to enter. This year the emphasis is on keeping riders local and exploring the quiet lanes close to the town. To find out more and sign up, go to www.hadleighcycling.co.uk The Club has re-started its Junior Section with a 6-week programme at the new Northern Gateway Cycle Track, Colchester (off the A12). The programme will run until 29th August (Thursdays, 6 – 7pm). There are 20 places available for children and these will be allocated on a “first come first served” basis. The course is suitable for riders who can ride a bike unaided. The focus is on core riding skills, road discipline and confidence. The course is led by Marshall Crowe, British Cycling Eastern Region Road & TT Coach and the Club’s own qualified coaches. The cost is £5 per session and riders need to be members of the Club. Adult members of the Club will also have an opportunity to experience competitive riding at the Northern Gateway in a safe environment. The Club runs social rides throughout the summer. Our Sunday rides usually begin at 8am (average speed 15mph) and 9.30am (12/13mph) from The George and there is a café stop. We’re also offering social rides for ladies on Wednesdays. They begin at 6pm from the High School and last 1 - 1.5 hours at the pace of the slowest rider. Spokes for Strokes In October 2019, at the age of 48, Liane Stone suffered a major stroke and was rushed to Ipswich Hospital where she fought for her life in Intensive Care. When she was stable enough, she was moved to their Specialist Stroke Unit, where she stayed for five months. Here, she received intensive nursing, medical and therapy treatment, but during this time she did suffer relapses which saw her back in Intensive Care. Just before Lockdown in March 2020, she received the news that she had been accepted into the NHS Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Caroline House in Norwich and this is where the hard work began. The amazing and dedicated staff helped Liane to speak, eat, walk again and she was also able to complete jigsaws! But most importantly, she needed to gain independence so she could go home. It was a really tough time for Liane, as this was whilst not being able to see her husband Ade, her daughter Danielle, and family or friends for five months. Luckily, with the help of social media, she was able to share her progress and keep in touch with everyone but at times it was upsetting to see her in pain and at some really low points. However, being strong and determined, Liane defied the odds and proved this when we received the video of her walking - there were tears all round! In August 2020, a small group of family and friends were over the moon to be there when she finally arrived back home, being driven by Ade after a very long ten months away. Liane’s recovery continues with physiotherapy at the Icanho Centre in Stowmarket. Life for Liane has changed, with adaptions having to be made to manage the long-lasting effects following the stroke but she continues to improve and she also hopes to be able to drive an adapted vehicle in the future. She has been supported by her employer RG Carter who have helped her to return to work on a part-time basis from home. Liane, her family, and friends want to thank the Stroke Unit at Ipswich Hospital and Caroline House by raising £10,000 to recognise the dedication of the staff that helped her on the road to recovery and to help all their other patients. The money raised will make a real difference to patients and staff, as the extra funds are used to enhance services and facilities, as well as purchasing additional equipment to optimise patient care. A sponsored bike ride named ‘Spokes for Strokes’ has been organised from Ipswich Hospital to Caroline House, Norwich and then returning to Ipswich on 18th September 2021. There are over seventy cyclists, who include family, friends, work colleagues and NHS Staff, plus an army of volunteers to man water stations, provide cake and other support on the day. Sponsorship has been gained from RG Carter, Longreach, DPL, GK Fencing and Castons. Liane will be joining Team Spokes for Strokes but will be participating from her home as part of the rehabilitation. On the day, she will be there travelling in a support vehicle to encourage everyone to keep going. Many of the cyclists and volunteers are from Hadleigh and the surrounding area. Liane, who has just celebrated her 50th Birthday with her twin sister Paula, lived in Hadleigh where she worked after leaving Hadleigh High School. For many years she was a member of Hadleigh Ladies Hockey Club and is a keen fan of Hadleigh Rugby Club. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre An update on the swallows: we have several babies, absolutely crammed into their nest and very noisy in their demands of mum and dad. By the time you read this, they will have fledged. Then we shall watch them on the rails of the arena as they practise flying. Amazing! We try to accommodate all our riders’ needs and abilities so I’m enclosing photos, one showing Jessica on Belle rising off the lead rein like a little pro. The other shows our new pony called Roddy learning the ropes with his rider and her support team. Clever ‘hooves’ the two of them. Glenn Abbassi writes... My virtual walk in Germany from Hamburg to Munich, a distance of 994 miles, was completed on the 28th June. On the 1st July I set off virtually from Ness Pont, Lowestoft to St David's, Pembrokeshire. As I was very pleased to accompany JW on the walks with which he celebrated his 80th birthday, my total mileage for the 4 days was 58 and on the 18th July I am in Worcester. With 160 miles to go, I will walk through the Wye Valley, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath and Carmarthen and hope to arrive at St David's in the first week of August.

Businesses encouraged to innovate with launch of new scheme Start-up businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk are being invited to take part in Innovate Local, a pilot scheme designed to help businesses grow and reach new audiences following the impact of Covid-19. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s Innovate Local scheme will offer businesses either use of a market stall in Hadleigh or Stowmarket or working space at an innovation hub in Sudbury or Eye. Business owners who would like showcase their business on a market stall but worry about taking the leap can be part of the pilot Innovate Local scheme at Hadleigh and Stowmarket and receive support and guidance throughout their involvement. In addition, businesses will benefit from a free pitch at either market for a set period, mentoring and support to running a safe and successful stall, business advice and training opportunities as well as support before and after the pilot. The first business to come to the stall in Stowmarket will be Sage & Seasalt who will be selling handmade coastal inspired sea glass & clay jewellery, artwork, and home décor from Saturday 24 July. While from 6 August, in Hadleigh market, Suffolk Style will be showcasing their range of Fairtrade, handmade and recycled goods for homes and gardens. The Innovate Local scheme is part of the councils’ ambitions to support high streets through the Invest in Hadleigh and Vision for Stowmarket programmes to help develop vibrant towns for residents and visitors to live, work and explore. The market scheme will be run in partnership with Suffolk Market Events who currently manage Hadleigh market on behalf of Babergh District Council as well as several other markets across the county. Commenting on the scheme, Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council cabinet member for economic growth said: “Hadleigh market is a popular shopping destination and a great place to showcase new businesses. Innovate Local provides a fantastic opportunity for new businesses to explore new opportunities with the support and advice to take their enterprise to the next level.” The scheme is open to businesses that have been operating for less than a year and do not currently have a place on a market and will be running until the end of December 2021. Hadleigh & District Garden Club The wet and windy weather we have had during June and into July has taken its toll on quite a few flowering perennials this year. I did, however spot this campanula carpatica or bell flower looking good and took a photo in between the showers. With so much time to spend in the garden earlier in the year I had put in supports before they really started to get going and they have done the job, I think the visiting bee appreciates it too! As the year goes on things are beginning to return to normal and I am pleased to say that the Club is once again going to be part of The Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh on Saturday September 4th. We will be running a plant stall as we did last time in the garden of one of our members at Toppesfield Mill House, Tinkers Lane, so please come and visit us there. At the end of June Sue, another of our members, opened her beautiful garden in Semer as part of the Open Gardens scheme. Lots of helpers were on hand, including some Club members, the rain held off, there were plenty of visitors, a good time was had by all and well over £1,000 was raised for charity which was brilliant. It has been a very unpredictable season for the garden over the last couple of months with more rain than usual for this part of the country as well as fluctuating temperatures. Slugs and snails have left me with one cucumber plant out of the four I planted (looked again this morning - all gone!), two courgette plants have disappeared and the climbing french beans are trying desperately to get to the top of the canes away from their pursuers! In the vegetable garden now is the time to sow spring cabbage and autumn and winter salads. Cordon tomatoes need to be stopped by removing the main shoot after the fourth truss so all the fruit ripens before the end of the season, bush tomatoes can be allowed to keep growing and remember to keep deadheading ornamental plants to encourage new flowers to form. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

I want to break free – do you? I am writing this three days before the Government lifts most of the restrictions that have been in place for the last year and a half, and yet I am not completely sure what that will mean. I have seen many singing at Wembley whilst the England team came so close to winning, but we have not been able to sing as a choir since March 2020. We have missed the singing, the fun and the people. Can we meet up again soon? Will people want to get together to sing? Hoping that the answer to the above questions is a resounding YES I think that it is time to announce that, all other things considered, THE COMMUNITY CHOIR IS COMING BACK!! We have set a date of Thursday 9th September as the relaunch date for the choir, although we have not yet set a venue for this as we have to take a lot of things into account. In the meantime, we are hoping to have some singing events in August for anyone to come along and sing – just simple singing to backing tracks in the open air (weather and Government instructions permitting). We will provide words and music; you just have to provide the voice. Panto makes a return! We are happy to announce that Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society is now able to join together once again after this terrible time we have been going though. And we have decided to put on The Wizard of Oz for our next panto in February 2022 in the half term holidays at Elmsett Village Hall. More information on this in later. St. Peter’s Sudbury The Secret Garden The final performance by This Is My Theatre Company in St Peters Church in Market Hill, Sudbury before it closes for renovation in September will be The Secret Garden on Wednesday 11th August. Sudbury Dramatic Society presents Joking Apart The exciting news is the next Sudbury Dramatic Society production, Joking Apart by Alan Ayckbourn is going to be on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 7th September to Saturday 11th September at 7.45pm In January 2020 Sudbury Dramatic Society held auditions for Joking Apart, which at the time, was scheduled for May 2020, but had to be postponed due to Covid 19. Now it is set to be the first SDS full-length onstage Quay Theatre production in September 2021. Although work had already begun on the 2020 production, one year on, some of the original cast were sadly unable to restart working on Joking Apart, but it has been successfully recast and, now in 2021, rehearsals for the rescheduled production have started in earnest with a strong cast. Is it possible for friends to be kind to be cruel? Joking Apart takes as its inspiration the study of what happens when kindness can - if not actually kill - then have a highly corrosive effect on others. The effortlessly successful, charming couple Anthea and Richard are generous to their friends both old and new and, over a period of 12 years, we see just how generous they are in a series of social gatherings in their back garden. Summer Sunshine When it comes to renewable technologies, solar PV is probably the easiest technology to incorporate into the home. Solar PV or photovoltaic converts natural sunlight into useable electricity which we all use on a daily basis. We have used the power of the sun for centuries, but it was in 1839 that scientist Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect. He found that certain materials released electrons when exposed to sunlight. In 1954 the first silicon photovoltaic cell was created, but it was during the oil crisis of the 1970s that research was stepped up and we saw the commercialisation of solar panels.

The sun is our greatest source of energy and silicon is found in sand, which is the second most abundant material on the planet so this really is a no brainer. The panels themselves are virtually maintenance free, they have an extremely long life and start producing electricity as soon as they are switched on. Installation prices are now at sensible levels and when you buy a solar PV system you are actually buying electrical energy, so in effect you are ‘fixing’ your own energy tariff for years to come. This all sounds too good to be true and so what is the catch? Well up until now the greatest challenge facing PV users has been timing. Clearly production of solar energy only occurs during daylight hours and its output peaks at around midday, whereas our consumption could be at any time day or night. Thankfully development has continued and solutions to this problem are now available. Electric vehicle (EV) charging and the heating of hot water are great ways to use that incoming energy. Battery systems can capture the generated energy and store it until it’s needed, as seen in the graph above. The SMART revolution has also brought us web based systems that allow us to monitor and effectively control our flow of energy and maximise our solar gain, usually all done automatically. Finally, one of the other great benefits of embracing this type of technology is that the home owner becomes much more energy conscious. I’ve heard that Universal Credit is going to be cut from September. I struggle to get by as it is and I’m really worried that if I lose £20 a week, I’ll get into serious debt. I’m already behind on some of my bills. What can I do to avoid things getting worse? You’re not alone in this - there is support available. Firstly, depending on your situation, you might be able to ask to have your Universal Credit paid differently - these are called ‘alternative payment arrangements’. This might be an option if you’re in debt or rent arrears, among other reasons. You now need to prioritise your debts. We have advice on our website to help you do this. Some bills can cause you more problems than others if you don’t pay them. Rent or mortgage arrears, energy bills and council tax are your priority debts as there can be serious consequences if you don’t pay them. Be sure to get in touch with the organisations you owe money to. Not everyone feels confident to do this, but they might be able to help by letting you pay smaller amounts or taking a break from payments. Many organisations have put in place protections for people who’ve struggled to pay their bills during the pandemic. The government-backed Breathing Space scheme could also give you extra time. Orchard Barn News http://www.orchardbarn.org.uk Orchard Barn is celebrating its 14th birthday in September this year, and so this is a perfect time to look back and remind ourselves how far we’ve come! For those of you who don’t know us, we are based in Ringshall and are a community run Centre for Environmental Education offering practical courses in heritage building, greenwood and rural skills. We are off grid – so no electricity or mains water – and we aim to make the least possible impact on our environment by sourcing and reusing natural local materials for all of our projects. Back in 2007 our journey began with the purchase of a beautiful but neglected timber framed barn standing in a large, overgrown plot of land. From the beginning we were committed to using only low-tech traditional construction methods and each project would be a focus for teaching these skills to students and volunteers. Progress was inevitably slow, using only traditional hand tools and methods, but by 2009 the main frame of the barn had been repaired, and by 2010 the oak roof frame had been reinstated. In 2011 the roof was finished – 20,000 wooden shingles being made and fitted by 70 volunteers over 9 months. In 2012, in what had been the old cattle yard, a Craft Barn and Seating Area were built, and the Greenwood Working Area was completed in 2018; all the work being done by students and volunteers. Our current project is to reinstate the 1580s Long House on our site which had long ago fallen down and become overgrown with brambles, to make it into a teaching space with overnight accommodation for students. As with many things, Covid has delayed progress, but we are hoping to raise the frame in September this year. Over our 14 years, we have come a very long way! Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club Hopefully we will be free of most, if not all Covid restrictions, whilst playing Carpet Bowls by now. Thank you to all the members for keeping the precautions going and keeping us all safe and well. Since we reopened after the last lockdown, we have concentrated on getting as many members as wanted to return to Carpet Bowls, back playing again. By popular demand, we will have returned to normal play, if Boris has removed the restrictions to wear masks etc. However if some members feel they want to continue to wear masks and pick up their own bowls, taking a more caution approach, this will certainly be acceptable. Just state your preference to whoever you are playing with and we will still have hand gel and wipes available for use. Hopefully we will now be able to take on new members and return to playing friendly matches with other local Clubs in the not to distant future. Firstly, we will try to play off our Annual In-House Competitions, starting with Pairs and Mixed Doubles. It will be lovely to be able to present cups and awards at our Christmas get together again this year, as we have done in the past. Well done to all our previous winners. Hadleigh United Football Club Since my last notes our First Team Manager Christian Appleford has stepped down due to work commitments , with the Committee acting quickly to appoint his Assistant Manager Steve Holder into the ‘hot seat’ this will be Steve's first managers role and has already brought in some new players to boost the squad for the coming season. Andy Lambert remains as Reserve Team Manager Matt Norman remains in charge of our Under 18's. We have also formed a new Saturday team ‘Hadleigh United Brettsiders’ they will be playing in the S.I.L Division 3 with Gary Groves as Manager. One player moving on after some 15 years at the Club is Club Captain Kris Rose, he has joined Ipswich Wanderers so that he can spend more time with his young family, we wish him all the best and give him our sincere thanks for his years of service with us. Our First Team 21/22 season starts with a long trip to newly promoted March Town on 31st July Home matches for August Tues 3rd Home to Whitton Utd; Sat 7th Home to Desbourough (F.A.Cup); Sat 14th Home to Fakenham; Sat 24th Home to Wroxham; Tues 24th Home to Walsham-le-Willows; followed by two away matches at Kirkley & Pakefield, making the same trip the next week to Gorleston, before hosting Long Melford on Tues September 7th. Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex Home has definitely been where the heart is for our 1st XI this season, as they remain unbeaten at the Meadow, with two recent wins over Mistley and league leaders Witham being the highlights. Our overseas player Kudzai Maunze has had a difficult season so far, but his struggle for runs came to an end against Mistley with 108 not out. Mistley looked to be cruising towards our total of 306 but a late flurry of wickets from Oliver Stace and a brilliant catch from Marlon Dias was enough to turn the tide. Not many teams have scored 300 at Hadleigh and lost! The win over Witham showed the character of the team too, as we recovered from 69-5 to post 208 and then defended it against by far the best side in Division 1. Witham will be hard to catch though, which sadly cannot be said for Covid-19, which is currently running through many clubs. It is ironic that just as we are able to open up our club as normal, the likelihood is that matches will be cancelled due to positive tests and teams self-isolating. The 2nds will be hoping their run-in is not too badly affected, as they are in the mix for promotion from Division 5. They have crucial games coming up against leaders Battisford and Needham Market which they will be desperately hoping to play. Performance of the month probably came in a defeat, however, as 13-year-old Toby Toombs made his maiden 50 for the club against Great Bromley while all else fell around him. 14-year-old Matthew Clark has also made huge progress this season and bowled almost an unplayable spell at Stowupland. On a Sunday there hasn't been too much to report, but at Horringer we witnessed one of the great HCC debuts as 12-year-old Jack Auld, given special dispensation to play in open age cricket, showed why he is such a prospect by claiming five wickets and a run out (a fine achievement at any time for a seam bowler, but certainly on the hottest day of the year). The Ladies have not had too much cricket lately, but Frankie Stenning continued her fine form with 36 not out against Ipswich & East Suffolk. Our Under-13s did brilliantly to reach their final but Copdock were too strong on the day, but can hold their heads high. The club are hosting several county matches in late July and August, including the Suffolk Men's 2nd XI on August 9th against Hertfordshire, and Suffolk Under-15 Boys versus Cambridgeshire on August 25-26. This is the showpiece of the club's first cricket week for some time, with a T20 against Tendring Park on August 24 and the Hadleigh Hundred on Friday August 27, our first attempt at the muchmaligned/anticipated (delete as appropriate) format that is set to dominate the cricket world over the next month. My family are also hosting a match in memory of my father on Sunday August 29th, and I have to say, some legends will be back on the Meadow that day! Let's hope the weather stays fine for what we hope will be a fitting tribute to Dad's contribution to the club over more than 50 years. Gary Wiles

100 Years of Scouting in Hadleigh This year the Hadleigh Sea Scout Group will be celebrating 100 years of Scouting in Hadleigh and we hope to be able to arrange suitable celebrations once the current Covid restrictions have been lifted. News from Stoke by Nayland England Golf Women’s Medal Regional Final – 23 June 2021 Katie Clark represented Stoke by Nayland at Ely City GC. A field of 55 women from all over the Eastern region competed on a beautifully prepared course on a very warm day. The competitors qualified by having the 4 best medal scores attheir club in the previous year. For the first time Stableford scoring was used and Katie along with her caddy, husband Mark, went round in level par, giving her 36 points. An early tee time meant a long wait but when all the scores came in Katie finished in first place and was thrilled to win the Eastern Regional final. Throughout the country there are 6 regional finals with the top 10 in each region going Katie Clark forward. Katie will now go on to compete at Woodhall Spa in August at the England GolfWomen’s National Final. Bronze Match Win!! - Another win for Stoke By Nayland Bronze team who won their final round against Three Rivers Golf Club. A grey drizzly day greeted the members of Stoke by Nayland’s Bronze team as they gathered for their final league match against ladies from Three Rivers Golf Club. Fortunately the forecast proved to be wrong and after a short shower the sun shone for most of the round. After introductions, coffee and bacon rolls the players set off. First out was Sue Spittlehouse who had a very challenging game which she finally lost 3&2. Next out Catriona Chaplin, in fine form after her success in Thursday’s ladies competition, made short work of defeating her opponent 7&6. Lesley Hitchcock had a very even match, reaching the turn all square, but after losing the tenth raised her game, winning the next five holes to finish 4&3.Clare Nixon, who was 4up at the turn, completed her match Team Captain Lesley Hitchcock, on the thirteenth green with a Sue Spittlehouse, Clare Nixon, 6&5 win. Finally, Hilary Cairns, Hilary Cairns and Catriona Chaplin. who had been down much of the match, brought it back with a superb putt on sixteen to put her in contention. After seventeen they were all square with one to play. Sadly an errant chip shot on eighteen meant a win for the opposition, but a thoroughly enjoyable match had been played. Ladies Captain Janet Hodge and Past Captain Jane Golding supported the team and provided refreshments at the halfway stage. Windfall Trophy - Stoke by Nayland Ladies played for the Windfall Trophy on Thursday 24th June on the Gainsborough course. The Stableford Trophy competition was won by Sue Spittlehouse who had her best game of the year so far coming in with 39pts to win ocb to Catriona Chaplin also with 39pts who also beat Barbara Jones on 39pts! Susan Swan also had a great day coming 4th with 38pts. So great scores from all the ladies this week. Trisch Jackson had 21pts to win the best front 9 and Alison Jennings had the best back 9 score with 20pts. Stoke by Nayland Ladies Pro Am - Stoke by Nayland Ladies held a Pro Am on Thursday 1st July on the Gainsborough course in beautiful sunshine, we had 12 teams of 3 ladies and a Pro with best two scores to count. The winning team were Lesley Garnett, Sybil Paton, Catriona Chaplin and Professional Roly Hitchcock with a score of 92points. In second place with 90points were Simon Dainty’s team, Corinne Jackson, Katie Clark and Clare Nixon. Pamela Randle had nearest the pin on the 11th hole. The winning Pro was Simon Dainty with a gross 68, 2nd Jamie Moul with a gross 70, Callum Hensby 3rd ocb with 71. The Mixed Medal - On Saturday 10th July the men & ladies of Stoke-by-Nayland GC competed against one another in the mixed medal. It was warm and a little humid but the course still had moisture from recent rainfall. The Constable course was used for this event with the men off the white tees and the ladies off the yellows. Division 1 winner was Greg Smith who shot an incredible 642=62 which we believe could be the new course record. Greg completed his 18 holes without dropping a shot! 8 birdies and 10 pars took him clear of the field by 7 shots! 2nd place was Ian McKay with 77-8=69 and 3rd was Mark Chaplin shooting 80-10=70 Division 2 was won by Darren Russell with a round of 85-12=73 which included 8 pars. Darren Selley lost ocb with the same 85-12=73 and 3rd Stephen Hewett 9115=76 ocb from 3 other players. Division 3 saw Tony Emms shoot 96-29=67 from Stephen Clark 86-17=69 with Bill Wardle 3rd on 92-20=72 ocb from Darren Kempster also on net 72.
