Hintlesham Barns: This Aladdin’s Cave of goodies has become a firm favourite on the Fidelis’ calendar in the run up to Christmas. Julie Girling’s eclectic mix of jewellery, bags and gifts makes seasonal shopping a pleasure. Her carefully chosen pre-loved clothes add an additional dimension to the visit and members rarely come away empty handed. After all that decision making her refreshments are always welcome. Oscar Wilde: Members went to see a recording of a live performance of the playwright’s Lady Windermere’s Fan at The Quay Theatre, Sudbury. First shown over 120 years ago many of the sentiments expressed about women and the ambiguity of upper class morality still have a ring of truth about them. A lively performance by Jennifer Saunders who made a welcome return to the stage after a 20 year absence. Food Bank: To help swell the stocks of the local food bank before the winter sets in, Fidelians brought their donations to a recent meeting. Sue Monks very kindly collected the amazing number of items which will be distributed to local families in need of this support. Sue thanked the group for their generosity before staggering Liz Wilson, Sue Monks and Jan Devey through the door with their contributions. Honeysuckle Farm: Full marks to owner, Matt Reed, for his stamina, perseverance and determination to see his brainchild reach fruition. Having overcome endless hurdles, the result is picturesque, state of the art, Shepherd’s Huts surrounded by trees and a mass of wildflowers. The comfortable, well equipped accommodation can be rented by anyone looking for a peaceful sojourn in the beautiful Suffolk countryside not far from Framlingham. Members followed his progress from a soggy thistle covered field to the current beauty spot teeming with wildlife. The project is still developing with plans to offer guests local wine-tasting sessions and other rural pursuits during their stay.

Now we are five! The Christmas Present Trust will be five years old this December, and thanks to the wonderful community in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas, we are able to provide a traditional Christmas meal and entertainment at The Ansell Centre on Christmas Day for anyone who, for whatever reason, cannot be with family or friends. We cater for all ages and circumstances, from young carers, to single parent families, forces families, people who have been bereaved, people with dementia and their carers etc. There is still time to nominate yourself, family member, friend or neighbour as a guest, or to volunteer over the Christmas period for what promises to be our biggest party yet. We can cater for all dietary requirements and can provide transport to and from the event for those who need it. For further information, please visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ChristmasPresentTrust or call 01473 - 829246 and speak to Simon or Sarah Thompson. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers past and present, and of course to the generous businesses and individuals in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas who have helped us to reach our fifth year. Also, where would we be without Team Avis and the Hadleigh Community News distributors who enable us to get the word out there? We are genuinely grateful to all of you and wish you all the very best this coming season has to offer.

Hard to believe that the Hadleigh Health Centre is hosting its second art exhibition this year. Recognising that seeing artwork in a care environment can reduce anxiety and aid recovery, the Patient Participation Group has transformed the old pharmacy into a mini art gallery. Art can brighten up spaces, reducing stress for patients and in some settings provide positive distractions. Hadleigh resident, Gilly Dutton (pictured), has submitted eight pieces for display until 31st January 2020. Gilly took up painting and sketching once she had retired from successfully running her own business and could devote more time to a relaxing hobby. Her materials range from pen, ink and pencil drawings, to acrylic and watercolour landscapes. Her frequent holidays in UK and Europe have provided plenty of subject matter for her canvases and this clear from the variety of the pictures in the exhibition. If you wish to continue to enjoy any of the paintings long after the exhibition has closed it is possible to buy any of the works with 10% of the purchase price going towards The Hadleigh and Boxford Medical Practice Charitable Trust. We hope that you will take the time to view the display even if you are not ill. To buy any of the artwork please contact Jan Devey deveys@btinternet.com or 01473 827091

Could it be lonely this Christmas? Nearly one million older people say they feel lonelier at Christmas. However, loneliness can affect anyone from any walk of life especially if they have been through bereavement, a relationship breakdown, have moved to a new area or suffer from physical or mental health challenges. Christmas on your own, particularly the first one, can be really hard. People often feel that there is a pressure to be happy and we are bombarded with images of smiling couples and close-knit families by the media. The Mental Health Foundation has found that loneliness is an even bigger concern for young people than the elderly. What can you do if you’re on your own? You might decide to curl up with your favourite snacks and a movie or go for a walk in the frosty air. If you haven’t chosen to spend Christmas alone and you’d like some company, have a think about what you might like to do. You can visit the Community Christmas website for older people, meetup.com for younger age groups or visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk to find details of community Christmas events taking place in your area. You could consider volunteering at the Christmas Present Trust (01473 829246) who provide a traditional meal and party on Christmas Day for those in the Hadleigh area who, for whatever reason, are by themselves at Christmas. You will also be welcome as a guest. Volunteering can be a great way to meet like-minded people. Visit Do-it.org to see where your nearest volunteering opportunity is. If you know other people who are also spending Christmas alone you could suggest that you go out for a meal as a group or organise a get-together where each person brings part of Christmas lunch. What can I do to support someone who is lonely? If you’re having a Christmas party, think about inviting people in your neighbourhood or others who you know are going to be on their own – the more the merrier! Don’t forget that some people may prefer to spend Christmas on their own, so keep any offer casual – you don’t want to put anyone under pressure. It can also be tough to spend Christmas Day surrounded by someone else’s family all opening presents, so consider inviting someone for just part of the day, like Christmas Lunch, or for a drink in the evening. You could drop a gift round to someone’s house part-way through the day, invite someone out for a walk or a trip to the local carol service or just pop in for a cuppa and a chat. If you know an older person who is lonely, you could offer to help them find local community events over Christmas. Community Christmas has listings of events for lonely older people happening across the UK. A Merry Christmas to All from the Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group

Don’t forget the Fishman! In last month’s edition I wrote a piece entitled Top Things to Buy at Hadleigh Market and it was quickly pointed out to me (to put it politely!) that I had missed out the fish. Of course this was completely unintentional and I have apologised (more than once!) for this complete oversight. And so this month, I pay homage to David the Fish Man. David Coote has been in the fish industry for almost twenty years and he has been trading at Hadleigh Market for seven of these. He drives from Lowestoft every Friday morning, throughout the year come rain, shine or snow to bring the freshest fish to the Market Place. David buys as much fish as he possibly can from Lowestoft Fish Market and he supplements this with regular trips to Billingsgate where he hand picks the rest of his stock. With many years of experience he knows exactly what his customers like; at this time of year the most popular fish are what he describes as ‘winter hearty’ – smoked haddock, salmon, cod and skate. During the summer months the stars of the show are tuna, prawns and dressed crabs but these are just a small selection of the fabulous line up he has each week which also includes scallops, Red Mullet, monkfish, mackerel and John Dory. Working in the fishing industry is tough. Fish prices are constantly rising, profit margins are dropping and the winter brings long cold dark days but when you ask David what it is he loves about his work he immediately replies ‘my customers’he genuinely loves serving fish to his customers. Over the years he has built up a fabulous rapport with many people and, as he explains to me, he is always learning from them. Many of David’s cooking tips and recipe ideas have been passed on from customers that he has served over the years and it is this relationship with communities that he loves most about his job. In addition to Hadleigh Market, David also attends Southwold Market on Monday and Thursday, Wickham Market on Wednesday and Newmarket on Saturday. You can also call David on 07712 659325 to make an order and collect from the market. So, next time you are near Hadleigh on a Friday, why don’t you go along to the Market Place, just off the High Street and get everything you need for a Winter Hearty Fish Pie and don’t forget to tell him that you read an article all about the Fishman in the Hadleigh Community News! Hadleigh Market, Market Place, Hadleigh, IP7 5DL Every Friday Morning 9am – 2pm E: Justine@suffolkmarketevents.co.uk www.hadleighmarket.com Are you stressed by busy high streets? Is internet shopping too impersonal? Treat yourself to a peaceful and personal, Christmas shopping experience at Chelsworth Christmas Fair on Saturday 7th December from 11am until 4pm. The Fair is held in Chelsworth’s beautiful medieval church and is a truly festive experience. There will be about 20 stalls selling crafts, gifts and festive foods. There will also be seasonal refreshments and some musical entertainment from Serendipity; plus, of course, the famous and fabulous, Chelsworth Christmas raffle. Entry is ÂŁ3 for adults, children free and also free entry for Chelsworth residents. Car parking is free at a nearby farm. Chelsworth is on the B1114 between Lavenham and Bildeston.
French’s Care Haven It is all systems go at the moment for French’s Care Haven. I have had some wonderful voluntary help from local people who have been working on the fencing and ground preparation, to get ready for the animals to come over to their new home. There is still a lot to do and things we need to have in place. One being plastic guttering...does anyone out there have any second hand or new ‘would be great’, lengths of guttering please, we need quite a bit so anything you may have would help. I am hoping to move the animals over just before Christmas when Andrew and Debora plan to move into the barn house. There have been a few donations from Hadleigh residents whom I would like to thank, Simon and Val Haines for their amazing donation of the cost of a field shelter, plus donations from Gale Pryor and Charmaine McKissock, their donations have allowed me to be able to buy water troughs and some fencing. We did have another donation that came from our donkeys sponsor, she has a business in Hadleigh, but would like to remain anonymous. Thank you N for your continued support and for the wonderful help buying our donkey’s field shelter. If you would like to volunteer or sponsor a donkey/horse please do get in contact with me, we could do with your help. Once we get the winter out of the way and spring summer times are here, I would like to get a lot more locals involved with our work of ‘Helping Animals Helping People’ so more of you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and environment in which the new farm is now based. I would like to thank our volunteers Dr Flather, John Purser and his friend Mike (pictured putting a post in) also Ken, David, Lindsey and Paul, who are all are retired or semi-retired. They have been a massive help, I could not have got this far with repairs and clearing if it had not been for them. We have a Go Fund Me page running to try and help us with purchasing equipment needed for us to continue. We also need help with donations to go towards our winters hay, as our hay/haylage costs are usually in the region of £800-£900 a month! Please do go to the page and have a look, see some of our photos and have a read. If you possibly can, please make a donation. A Dedicated Christmas Workshop It was with very mixed emotions that the Country Thread Group came together for their annual all day Christmas workshop. As this has been a popular fixture on the group’s calendar for many years it made the recent loss of one of their most loved members, Lin Slaughter, all the more noticeable. Lin’s exceptional craft skills and ideas contributed so much to the group’s success while adding to the much needed funds for St Elizabeth Hospice at the same time. However, it seemed a fitting tribute to her life-long dedication to fund raising to continue with the workshop even though Lin and her craft and baking talents were sorely missed. This year the focus was on Christmas Trees and many attractive versions were completed ready for delivery to the Made with Love shop at the Hospice’s Day Centre. A creative, peaceful day which was much enjoyed by all who came along. If you would like to be part of this informal friendly group which meet every Wednesday at 7pm in the URC Rooms why not give their leader, Mavis Gordon, a call? 01473 824 398. Everyone welcome.

Hear here in Hadleigh! Becoming hard of hearing? Finding it difficult to communicate? Fortunately, help is at hand in Hadleigh with a wellestablished lip-reading class. This season, it has a new tutor, Steph Moon, who is keen to welcome new recruits, not just from Hadleigh, but from the surrounding area. She also runs successful sessions in other parts of Suffolk. The classes are friendly, fun and, in addition to lip-reading, give pupils all sorts of lifestyle tips in coping with everyday situations where hearing is difficult, as well as an opportunity to “swap notes.” “Hearing difficulties can be debilitating and can make people feel inferior – even going to the shops, the doctor, or eating out can be a trial as well as social gatherings. But we’ve seen people’s confidence soar after attending even a few classes,” said Steph. They realise that other people have the same difficulties. Many people have discovered lip-reading an absolute boon in overcoming such problems. The Hadleigh and district lip-reading classes take place at the Ansell Centre, Market Place, between 10.00 am and 12.00 noon on Tuesdays. They are run by Suffolk Hearing Advisory Service, part of a registered charity. Young and old are welcome - it could be a revelation! A charge of £7.50 (£6.00 concessionary rate) is made per session, which most people find is extraordinarily good value, given the quality of the help. Those interested in joining should email Steph Moon at: steph.moon@hhas.org.uk. Alternatively, contact Suffolk Hearing Advisory Service on 01473 286060 or email suffolkinfo@hhas.org.uk
New Grave Tending & Floristry Business Opens in Hadleigh After months of planning & preparation, Jo Hogger recently launched her new business Grave Tending & Flowers by Jo. Changing her career path to floristry after many years in the global corporate world has been a bit of a sea change. Jo is confident it is the right move for her to provide this service across Suffolk, she is very excited about how her business is being received by both clients and the business community of Suffolk. But why grave tending? Jo’s relatives living in Yorkshire tended various family graves in Hampshire, they struggled travelling monthly to Hampshire. Jo found herself in a similar situation in recent years and decided she wanted to use her floristry skills tending graves for others who face similar challenges. Losing someone we love is extremely painful, as time moves on a grave plot provides a place to honor their lives and your love for them. Unfortunately for many of us, for many good reasons like distance, mobility or time, you may not be able to tend this special place yourself. Jo will be a caring advocate helping you to keep that connection. During the consultation she will find out as much as you would like to share about your loved one, including some memories and photos meaning that her visits to this special place to clean, tidy, tend and make beautiful with bespoke flowers will have a personal and caring touch. As part of her fully managed service, your family or friends group will receive communication with before and after photos and a reminder of her next visit to give you all comfort and peace of mind. Alongside her Grave Tending and Flowers business she is also a qualified Cruse (https://www.cruse.org.uk) Bereavement Support Volunteer. Flowers are a symbol of life, Jo feels passionately that graves should be honoured with beautiful flowers, she uses the same principles when designing bouquets and wreaths for graves as she uses for any celebration … they will delight and show that your loved one is cherished and respected. Hadleigh Walkers We had 15 walkers for our November walk on a beautiful crisp sunny day. Our December walk on Saturday 14th will be a circular walk starting and finishing in Hadleigh. We will leave Stonehouse Road at 0930 and walk via Toppesfield Bridge, Bullocky Fen, Rands Farm, Doles Farm, Millwood Cottage, Wyncoll’s Farm, Cobblers Corner, Overbury Hall, the hunt kennels and back into Hadleigh via Tinkers Lane. We will end up at The George to celebrate another good year of the walking group and discuss ideas for 2020. The walk is a fairly gentle 7 miles and we should be back in Hadleigh around 1230. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy or rough in places. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us from the website contact page or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Past Meetings - On 13 November Magistrate Graham Higgins talked of "Tales From The Bench". He looked at our legal heritage, particularly the part played by Suffolk. He also related how the role of magistrates and local events have played a part in this history and brought us up to date with an opportunity to decide how a defendant should be sentenced by briefly outlining a case. He also included some of his unusual experiences on the bench. Future Meetings & Diary Dates - We don’t hold a speaker meeting in December but instead a Christmas lunch and this year it is being held on Wednesday 11 December at the Ipswich Best Western Hotel, Copdock IP8 3JD. This is always a very popular event so an early reservation is advised. On 8 January Chris Parfitt, a retired teacher, will enlighten us on “The Mysteries Of Easter Island.” He will present an illustrated talk in which he will look at life on this remote island today and he will explore its unique history revolving mainly around the famous statues and some of the theories surrounding them. Tracy from the Giggly Pig Co will talk on "The Life & Times Of An Essex Bad Girl" on Wednesday 12 February. From prison to a successful Brand is her story. Just how did she manage to change the direction of her life into being a pig farmer and successful sausage producer. Each month, the Coffee Grinders meet at The Lambe School, Gaston Street, East Bergholt, CO7 6SD from 10-12 noon. This meeting especially welcomes new members but gives all members the opportunity of meeting the activity Group Leaders and the Committee whilst enjoying a cup of coffee. The next meeting is on Friday 31 January. Membership - Our main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those who are no longer in full time employment and emphasis is always placed on making learning active and fun as well as helping in developing friendships. We have a wide range of groups including language study, country walking, computer studies and gardens, churches and historic buildings visits. In the main, membership is drawn from communities in the lower Stour Valley and adjacent areas including Brantham, Capel St Mary, Dedham, East Bergholt, Holbrook, Lawford, Manningtree, Raydon, & Stratford St Mary. We are affiliated to the ThirdAge Trust, have over 400 members and 40 active groups. Meeting Venue - We meet at The Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TP at 2 for 2.15pm. Annual membership costs £12 and this entitles members to attend the meetings that take place on the second Wednesday of each month, except December. Whilst Visitors are welcome to join us on a limited number of occasions, paying a donation each time, Members are given priority, for safety reasons, due the halls limited capacity. Remember - It's never too late to learn! Join over 400,000 members across over 1,000 U3As throughout the UK today! Spot and spills! So, what is the best way to clean up a spill on a carpet or fabric! Put white wine on red wine? Scrub it with washing up liquid? Each spillage has its own properties that require breaking down. Wine on wine will be able to dilute the colour, but you are wasting wine and increasing the amount of sugar left in the fibres, meaning the area will pick up dirt making it look like the stain has come back! Scrubbing or using cleaners often have perfumes, and bleaching agents and often damage sensitive fibres like wool, but also causes rapid re-soiling due to the oil based perfumes. Simple is the easiest way! If water based, absorb with kitchen roll, dab small amount of water with sponge to the area, blot out with kitchen roll, use a Woolsafe approved spotter (our professional spotters are available from most local carpet retailers) and blot out. This is the safest way. If this does not remove, stop and call us. We can use other processes to break down the remaining properties to get rid of those unwanted stains. Take a look at our website for stain removal tips or download the Woolsafe app for more information or simply give us a call. www.hadleighcarpetcareltd.co.uk - 07507 240226

Anglo Saxon enthusiasts urged to ‘Stick An Oar In’ to back ship build A raft of opportunities for Anglo Saxon history enthusiasts to back a unique shipbuild has launched with the chance to sponsor one of 84 oars. Benefactors are being sought by the team reconstructing the Saxon ship which was buried at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk for more than 13 centuries. The oars, which are being made to row the vessel once it is completed, are being offered up to history, archaeology and maritime enthusiasts for £1,000 each in exchange for having their name burnt into the wood. Philip Leech, chairman and director of the Sutton Hoo Ship’s Company, which is responsible for the build, said: “This is a hugely exciting project which will see archaeologists, historians, experts in shipbuilding and volunteers come together to raise a ghost ship. “We hope there will be lots of people out there who would like to ‘own’ part of this adventure and see their name emblazoned on an oar. But it’s a limited number that can sponsor an oar so it will be first come first served. The 90ft ship is being built in the Longshed, Woodbridge, Suffolk leased by Woodbridge Riverside Trust. The release of the oars is the second phase of a crowdfunder programme - Make Ship Happen - which hopes to raise £1 million towards the project. Along with the oars, larger sponsorship packages are available including funding the keel, the planks and the stem and stern. In August, more than 3,500 numbered metal rivets that will hold the ship together were offered to the public for £20 each. Mr Leech said: “We have had such an incredible response from people wanting to be a part of this. “Now we need big backers to put their oar in and help us move forward.” The ship will be built over a two-year period by a number of volunteers who have been taught traditional building methods. Once finished, it will be tested at sea with a full crew. If it looks possible, the team will erect a mast and see how well it sails. Mr Leech added: “The build is a serious scientific endeavour and an example of experimental archaeology which is carried out by replicating or approximating the feasibility of ancient cultures. “This is done by employing a number of methods, techniques, analysis and approaches based upon archaeological source material - in this instance raising a ghost ship based on the indent left by the original vessel. “Everything will be carefully recorded so we can learn from the construction.” All that was left of the ship, buried beneath the sand of Sutton Hoo in the 7th century was an impression of the rotted-away ship’s timbers. Plans for the shipbuild have been produced digitally from the measurements taken at the excavation back in 1939 which revealed an early medieval burial ground that included the grave of Raedwald, an Anglo-Saxon king. 100 Years On - Lest We Forget As I stood at the memorial waiting for the parade with my son and daughter, grandson and two great grandsons, so many memories came to mind from so many years ago. I never knew my paternal grandad, as he lost his life in 1915 in France. He has no known grave but is on the wall at the Arboretum. We have just a photo but never forget. My other grandad served in Egypt and Palestine and came back to us. In the second conflict he was a local fireman and spent many hours at the docks in Wapping to help put out fires caused by the bombing. My father was in the Territorial Army but spent the war on the land and the Home Guard. The second conflict started and my war lasted ten years but that is another story. The first three years we lived in a cottage with no running water (pump your own) no electricity and sanitation but dad made us comfortable and we always had something to eat, we also had school dinners. I remember powdered egg and mash we called Pom. Still it tasted alright. One afternoon in the garden I heard a loud noise. We were near an airfield and suddenly the sky was filled with Dakotas pulling gliders. My friends in the ARP post told me later what it was all about. Some time later a convoy of lorries filled our entire village street. They were making camp at various places. I saw different troops from U.S.A Australia, New Zealand and India. As each lorry stopped next to us my mum made a cup of tea for as many as possible. A few weeks later they were all gone, on their way down to the south coast. Then it was all over and we had a new cottage. Running water and a bath and electric light. Sheer bliss. The village had a celebration in the village hall. There cooking the sausages were the village blacksmith and the village sweep, you couldn’t make it up.in 1955 it was time for National Service. I joined the RAF hoping to see a bit of the world. Sadly no, but I can show you around Salisbury Plain. I was part of the funeral parade for Lord Trenchard in London. I then had the honour of meeting Grp Captain Johnny Johnson. I escorted him round my base and took him to our C.O. he shook my hand and said thank you. What an honour. The next stage of our service to the country belongs to my son. He joined the Royal Engineers and saw service in Germany, Cyprus and the Falklands. Then we paid our respect to the young lady who lived next to me from about the age of six. We remember local lass St/Sgt Sharron Elliot who sadly lost her life in Iraq whilst helping others. R.I.P Sharron. So, the service ended and the very large crowd made their way home. I think everyone remembered someone. So let us never forget all those who gave their yesterday for our today. C. A. Petts

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre So now the weather starts to disrupt the programme of rides and our riders can’t always be sure they will get up on a pony and enjoy an outdoor lesson. That’s where I can help because on really wet days each rider can have 10 minutes on my back, practicing skills that might not be possible on a live horse. The best thing I help with is rising trot. Looks easy? Ha, you just try that little uplift of your bottom whilst keeping yourself sitting tall, and balanced, and in rhythm with my body as I emulate the trot for you! At least if the rider clutches tightly on the reins by mistake, I won’t slow down or get confused. My mouth is pretty tough so the rider is forgiven. Its also good fun teaching this skill, there are often squeals of laughter from my room as the bouncing escalates. In addition to this session with me, a cancelled outdoor ride gives time for revision of the horsemanship skills needed to pass grades and earn certificates. RDA is committed to teaching each rider to gain knowledge and understanding of the horse world, and to reinforce the learning that school pupils are receiving through the national curriculum. Having a riding lesson during school hours will complement a person’s learning journey. This is also the season of mud, as any horse owner will know. Our live horses live out nicely rugged up against the wet, but their field gates become well ploughed up by their hooves, and in fetching them in or leading them out, our volunteers have to wade through the quagmire. Its not fun, but ‘all in a good cause’ as we say. Luckily I don’t have mud in my room, and we can switch on the heater in the worst of weather. Christmas will soon be celebrated around the world, whatever the local climate may be. I think we are lucky that it happens during our winter when darkness descends early and there is every excuse for candlelight. Once again, our carol service will begin here in the yard with riders and their families gathered in; we shall have prayers read by some of the riders, music kindly provided by the Serendipity choir and the Boxford Methodist Silver band. There will be mulled wine and mince pies. As darkness falls the Shetland ponies lead the large Shelly family down the hill to the lane and along the lantern lit route to Shelley Church. Each pony is represented by a candle, carried by one of their riders, who place it on the altar for a blessing. It’s the perfect way to remember our connection with a far away, much more primitive stable being mentioned all over the planet at this time of year. Our volunteers will be having their Christmas party, no doubt. I shall pick up the gossip afterwards, but not be there myself of course. I hope all my readers have an enjoyable festival and keep well and happy throughout this busy time. See you in the new year! Website: www.shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172
Hadleigh Community Choir Our next concert in December is in aid of Fresh Start new beginnings, a local therapeutic service that helps children who’ve been abused and supports their families. This time the songs are mostly about winter and Christmas (yes, a lucky coincidence, I thought that too), and the music team have dug out songs that are mostly new to us and possibly to you. ‘Ring out Solstice Bells,’ anyone? or maybe ‘Torches’? You can reminisce over Paul Simon and Tori Amos numbers or maybe feel a bit sad about that old lover of yours (oh come on, you know who I mean) with Tim Rice and ‘A Winter’s Tale’. A special treat for those of you in Hadleigh who happen to be 17th century native Canadians, you can sing along to The Huron Carol, and there’s the old Wizard classic ‘I wish it could be Christmas every day’ for people who will insist on being happy over Christmas. So come along to our concert, have fun and enjoy a wide range of songs and support a very worthwhile charity. 7.30pm on 7th December at the United Reformed Church in, Hadleigh Tickets available at The Idler and Keith Avis, newsagents or on the door. If you like singing or you’d like to try it, come along when we practice on Thursdays at 7.30 at the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh or contact Stella (01473 823477) or John (01473 823791). www.hadscommunitychoir.onesuffolk.net

www.gotelee.co.uk Suffolk Bereavement Support Lighting a Candle at Christmas It’s drawing nearer again! We just can’t escape evidence of Christmas festivities no matter how hard to we try! Though many may enjoy all that it entails, it is important to think about those who find it a sad time, especially the bereaved. Even if surrounded by friends and family Christmas can be a challenging time for the bereaved and feelings of loss and loneliness are often accentuated. Sometimes friends and family can feel awkward about mentioning a loved one who has passed and this may not help. The following expresses what many feel especially at this time of year: ‘maybe they didn’t know what to say or how to say it, but I really wished they had said something to show that they understood the significance of my loss’. Others have said that rituals are helpful, such as lighting a candle to acknowledge the memory of a loved one. At this time of year in particular, it can be a comfort and a tangible reminder that a loved one is very much in their thoughts. If this blog is meaningful for you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join us at any time. Hadleigh & District Garden Club Monday November 11th 2019: As you can see from the photo our recent speaker is enjoying a well earned cuppa after his talk to the club last month. Rob Brett, the curator at RHS Hyde Hall gardens in Essex, came to speak about our need for plants. Though we are all aware of the role they have to play in food production and climate change, as he explained they are also essential in other areas which we may not be as familiar with. For example construction, bio fuels, medicine, technology, pharmaceuticals, research and genetic modification. His wide ranging talk explained all these areas and many more. He also touched on the important role the RHS is taking in community outreach projects to help people, and especially children, reconnect with plants and to learn where their food comes from. A relatively new project at Hyde Hall is the Global Growth Garden which is playing a key role in supporting this work and well worth a visit if you are down that way. The room was almost full once again I am pleased to say, so much so that extra biscuits had to be provided! The competition was won by Jan, one of our new members - congrats to her, and even though November can be a low point in the gardening year there was still plenty to choose from on the plant and produce stall. Monday December 9th 2019: December wouldn't be the same without our end of year quiz and this year we have been promised a music round to add to the excitement! There will be plenty to eat and drink and by special request, a Christmas raffle! We meet in the dining room of the Town Hall at 7.30pm. Entrance is £2 for members and £4 for non members it is always an enjoyable evening and we hope to you see you there. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Down to Earth ...with Dave By the time you read this we will be into December, where has this past year gone? Any tender plants such as non hardy fuchsias, salvias, pelargoniums and other succulent types should be put under cover. We are lucky that most of ours can be squeezed into the greenhouse, in the past we have tried covering some of them with fleece outdoors, but this was not a success as the fleece kept blowing about and ripping. One salvia that was new this year was Amistad, this had been planted in one of the beds but had grown rather large. Although it still had lots of flower spikes on it, it was cut back quite hard, dug up and put in the biggest pot we have, then stood in the greenhouse. It is such a lovely flower we wouldn't want to lose it. We have been giving the various bushes around the garden a bit of a trim, the climbing rose over the arbour was getting a bit out of hand so it has had quite a haircut. The buddleia has had the top growth cut back, if left the rather soft stems will break if we get any high winds. Whilst we don't have much grass now it is still possible to give any grass a trim if we get a bit of dry weather. A rotary lawnmower is an easier way of picking up the autumn leaves and once shredded they will rot down a lot quicker. Try to keep paths clear of fallen leaves as they can become very slippery and potentially dangerous, if the leaves are brushed onto the flower beds then the worms will soon pull them down onto the soil. In a recent editon of Which? gardening magazine five pages were devoted to unwelcome garden visitors, the top ten were - cats, grey squirrels, foxes, rats, magpies, badgers, moles, pigeons, deer and rabbits. All sorts of ideas were suggested including motion triggered water sprayers, not leaving any food out, all sorts of wire netting covering, tree guards, blocking up any access holes in fences or under sheds, using male urine to deter foxes and numerous animal repellent products now on sale. Generally though it would seem that we should learn to live in harmony with our wildlife, not so it would seem with seagulls. On a recent visit our granddaughter was telling us of a problem they were having with seagulls, she works in a high rise office in Canary Wharf in London. What happens is that the seagulls chase other birds like pigeons so that they crash into their office windows, once stunned the pigeons are pounced upon and eaten, leaving only the wings. As all birds are protected by law it is quite a difficult problem, we have all seen seagulls being a nuisance at the seaside but this is something new. As this is the last article before Christmas I wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year, Dave

Hadleigh & District Flower Club HDFC welcomed Bedwells of Ipswich to demonstrate at the November meeting. The mother and daughter team gave a wonderful demonstration to put us in the mood for Christmas. They used beautiful flowers and Mum regaled us all with her knowledge of the Floristry Business. Based in Ipswich, Bedwells have been providing the community with flowers for 60 years and needless to say they have a lot of loyal customers. Judging by the wonderful flower arrangements they produced, they thoroughly deserve the reputation they have built up. We ended the evening with coffees and teas and the raffle. If you would like to join us for any of our demonstrations, the venue is the URC in Hadleigh, the start time is 7:30 pm and we meet on the second Tuesday of the month. Next month we will be enjoying National Demonstrator Gill McGregor. Her demonstration is entitled ‘The Splendour of Christmas’. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Christmas stalls, Raffle & Refreshments. Come and enjoy a truly wonderful demonstrator.

News from Kersey School Squirrels (Reception) - Squirrels have been busy retelling and acting out The Three Little Pigs. They are working really hard to use their phonics when reading and writing. Our topic this half term is houses and homes so we have been for a walk around the village to spot lots of different types of homes. We also looked at the different materials used to build houses. In maths the children have been using 2D shapes to create pictures. Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) - In Hedgehogs we have been reading the story of Three Little Pigs linked to our topic on houses and homes. We have re-told the story using story language and also invented our own version of the story using new characters and new building materials. We have been working hard to ensure we use punctuation in our writing. Badgers (Years 3 and 4) - Badger's have been busy learning about Christmas in both the past and around the world. We focused on the Tudors this week and learnt all of the things they would do on Christmas Day. Did you know their Christmas dinner had 24 courses!!! We then created our own 12 days of Christmas filled with all the things we would like to receive. In English we are reading Phillip Pullman's Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp. So far the children have written character descriptions, a diary as Aladdin and created art work on what they think the garden looks like that holds the enchanted lamp. We also enjoyed making our origami poppies ready to put on our wreath for the remembrance service on Monday. Owls (Years 5 and 6) - Owls have continued their learning about the environment this half term; they asked to conduct a litter pick around the school and some of the surrounding roads and hedgerows, which they completed with great enjoyment! As part of our learning about humility in collective worship, we made some art work from rubbish. The children enjoyed serving their community and are keen to have another litter pick later on in the year. Come and visit! If you missed our open days at the start of November but would still like to visit please get in touch and we will make an appointment for you. Our whole school nativity will be taking place on Wednesday 18th December at 1:30pm in St Mary’s Church, Kersey – get into the festive spirit and come along if you can. If you would like to know more about Kersey school or would like to arrange a visit please ring the office on 01473 823397, email: admin@kersey.suffolk.sch.uk or visit our website: www.kersey.suffolk.sch.uk
Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 33 (Winter 2019-2020) On the north wall of St Mary Magdalene’s Church is a large memorial to the Growes family, three generations of whom served Bildeston and district as general Issue 33 Winter 2019-2020 Price ÂŁ4 practitioners throughout the 19th century. Born in 1836, Frederic Salmon Growes chose a different path by studying architecture at university and joining the Indian Civil Service, where he worked for thirty years. Those of you are ‘into’ history will know that Frederic was the compiler of Material for a History of the Parish of Bildeston published in 1892. His contribution to the cultural history of India Features in this issue: is currently being uncovered and much A tenement called the White Hart: now Bank House Stores Fredric Salmon Growse: heralded. Hence the subtitle to the leading antiquarian, archaeologist, architect and oriental scholar Bad people of Bildeston medieval style article about him as ‘antiquarian, Stories from Semer Workhouse: Bildeston inmates of 1851 Building houses in Wattisham Road: Nos.53 and 55 archaeologist, architect and oriental scholar’ When Suffolk Record offices Bury St Edmunds reduced its holding of documents from Cosford Rural District Council, I acquired some drawings and specifications from applications for planning permission of the 1920s and 1930s. ‘Building house in Wattisham Road’ looks at one pair of se3mi-detached homes passed by the Council in 1924 and built by Death & Son, contractors of Newberry Works (site now north corner of High Street and Ipswich Road). As mains water did not come to Bildeston for another decade, the supply was to be a well on site in Wattisham Road and earth closets were accessed at the back of the houses by way of doors only reached from their gardens. Readers Judy Wilson of Hawkedon and Nigel Crisp of Hadleigh have sent in photographs of school groups in the early 20th century, which might have been taken on the same occasion. They show the class of older boys and another of younger children. Does anyone have a picture of the older girls that would show the rest of the pupils at the school, which was then under headmaster Frederick Hurley and situated between Chapel Street and Duke Street. ‘Bad people of Bildeston medievil style’ recounts entries in the Patent Rolls of incidents in the village that came to the notice of various authorities. One such event in 1445 involved Agnes Motte, whose reaction to receiving a court summons was to call upon seven neighbours to deal with the messengers. Apparently, they were threatened with having their throats cut if they did not eat the document including its wax seal. A Country Brawl by Pieter Brueghel the younger, although painted two hundred years later, ably illustrates the scene. In Issue 8, the story was told of Bank House stores from 1873 to 1984. Now, ‘A tenement called the White Hart’ tells an earlier history of ownership and occupancy of this building, which has had groceries as its main items for sale since 1705 – and long may it continue. Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Children in Need Schools across the UK got together at 9am on Friday 15 November to get active and raise money for BBC Children in Need. Live-streamed on the YouTube channel, we joined schools all across the UK in an exclusive activity session tailored just for schools! Children also wore spotty or Children in Need accessories for the day! We also had a cake sale after school for Children in Need. We are grateful to all families who provided cakes for us to sell at this popular event. Overall we raised £204 this year to support disadvantaged young people across the UK – thank you to everyone for their donations. Tag Rugby Event Pupils within our pyramid of schools attended a small schools rugby tournament at Whatfield Primary on 31 October. It was the first time taking part for some of our competitors and they all had a great time as the event was a practice for further tag rugby events up to the end of term. OBH Year 5 Girls’ STEM Olympiad Year 5 girls across our federation enjoyed a day at Old Buckenham Hall School enjoying workshop challenges in Maths, Science, ICT and Engineering. Whilst they did not make the top three schools, they all had a wonderful day taking part in tasks, challenges and experiments. School Council Elections took place across the school to determine our school council representatives from each class. In KS2 particularly, the pupils were asked to share with their class why they would make a good class representative. This helps with gaining confidence whilst speaking in front of their class mates. PTFA Christmas Fayre The PTFA Christmas Fayre will be held on 29 November 2019 from 5 – 7pm at the school. There will be a Santa’s Grotto for the children as well as festive refreshments and of course some wonderful stalls to help with those Christmas presents! So do please come along to support this event and bring along the whole family. The PTFA held a very successful cinema night for the children recently and they all came with their bean bags and enjoyed a movie and popcorn! Great fun! Is your child due to start school September 2020 or at any time in the future? If your child was born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016, then you will need to apply for a school place for academic year which starts in September 2020 before the deadline of 15th January 2020. Admission forms, information and procedures are available from our school office. Visits by prospective parents are most welcome. Once again there is a rustling of shredded paper at SESAW as more hungry hedgehogs demand their dinner. They will stay with us until they put on enough weight to fend for themselves. Despite our best efforts, some of our rescue stories do not have a happy ending. One such is Titch, a gentle giant of a mastiff, found tied up on a London building site. She needed a leg operation upon arrival but soon recovered and went to live with one of our volunteers and her pets. Unfortunately dogs became jealous of each other and who should share the sofa with the humans. She returned to SESAW to enjoy her walks and playtime again until a sudden decline in her health. Our usually boisterous girl was found to have a massive growth and sadly, is with us no more. It seems those that get dealt the wrong cards throughout their lives cannot have a happy ending. My, how we all miss her ugly ol’ mug gazing at us saying “come on give us a cuddle”. If you have room in your heart and home to give one of our other residents a new start, leave an answerphone message or email us. Please check the website if you plan to visit as we will be closed for a few weeks. Season’s greetings and best wishes for 2020 from all of us at SESAW, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Hadleigh Bowling Club We’d like to thank all our sponsors for their valued support over this and many years, and to wish them a Happy Christmas and a successful 2020. Crockatt Garage Ltd, S. Cowle Electrical, Colourfence, Gwinnell & Sons Travel Stop, Gotelee Solicitors, Hunters Exclusive, Hintlesham Barns WJ Green Ltd, Home Computer Services, Smugglers Catering Chisnall & Sons, Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance Of course the green and outdoor bowling will have to wait till the better weather and the new season next April. So why the sunny outdoor photo, you ask? The club stays busy during the winter months, indoor short-mat competitions thrive, and the socialising goes on with Pie & Quiz nights, Sunday lunches, buffets, New Year’s Dinner and Valentines Dinner Dance and all the rest. Ah, yes, the photo. Well, to be honest it’s just fun to torture everyone because they’re all counting down the days till the green opens up again. Come on people, get a grip. Play with your kids or something. It’s not long. If you fancy trying indoor short-mat, ask any member you know or contact Jan on 01473 828212 and she will organise it for you
Monks Eleigh History Group On 4 November, the Monks Eleigh History Group were pleased to welcome local historian, Pip Wright, who gave a fascinating talk on the subject of Suffolk Witches. The next meeting, on 2 December, promises to appeal to anyone with an interest in local history; Bryan Thurlow will present “Maria Marten and The Red Barn,” bringing to life the characters who played a role in the tragic events in Polstead in 1827. We meet at Monks Eleigh Village Hall, on the first Monday of each month from October to March, starting at 7.30pm with tea and biscuits served from 7pm. New members and visitors are welcome, membership for the season is £9.00, attendance at individual meetings £3.00. It has been another busy year at Kersey Mill and time has whizzed by! All the work to convert the Mill ready for Santa’s Workshops is now complete and we can report that Santa and his helpful band of elves are eagerly awaiting all the visitors in the run up to Christmas! The Santa’s Workshops start from 1st December and the hour long sessions run each Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am to 5pm. For the final weekend, additional Workshops have been added to include Friday 20th and Monday 23rd December. Tickets are selling like hot cakes, however for any last minute tickets you can still purchase these either by phone 01473 829317 or on-line, so please get in touch! All proceeds go to the restoration fund and we thank everyone who helps with the event and supports it by attending. We are also pleased to report good progress has been made with the restoration work to the Mill itself and now that the millstones and associated furniture have been reinstated, we can look forward to commencing work on the final stages to the mill elevators and bolters next year. Work completed during 2019 included: • Replacing the millstone runner stones • Maintenance carried out to the water wheel, sluice gates, head and tail race (the channel leading to and from the water wheel) • Clearing and tidying the riverbanks • Repair/replacement of some of the weather boards and guttering • Repair/reinstatement of the three glut boxes to the water-driven stones • Oak floorboards lifted and closed up on the first floor (as unfortunately they had shrunk) • Building of the tuns (wooden casing for the millstones) During 2019 it was pleasing to see so many visitors to the site and we invited numerous groups and societies along for our free guided tours of the Mill and gardens. We also welcomed students from Cambridge on an Historic England tour of Kersey Mill to witness the restoration work in progress. The Suffolk Mills Open Weekend held in May and two nationally organised events, Drive It Day and National Heritage Week held in April and September respectively, certainly helped to raise the profile of Kersey Mill and were highlights in our calendar. The goal is to have the Mill working occasionally and be available to the public for recreational and educational purposes, so it becomes a working museum for all to enjoy. This project still requires substantial funds and expertise along with many hours of work of varying degrees, including administration, fundraising, working alongside builders, carpenters and general labour. We already have a small number of people offering support for the project but desperately need more. If you are a large organisation or a single individual who would like to be part of the restoration or arrange a visit to see work in progress or help create this legacy for generations to come, please do get in touch via our website www.kerseymill.net A special thanks is extended to everyone who has volunteered at our fundraising events and to "The Friends of Kersey Mill", who have continued to support us with the restoration project. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
