Here at Orchard Barn we are busy making wooden tiles (shingles) for our new craft room roof, but we need your help! The logs we are using are Sweet Chestnut which is a wood with tannin in it. Why mention this here? Well, tannin corrodes ordinary metal which means that for our shingles to stay fixed to our roof we need to buy expensive non-corrosive stainless steel nails to fix them with. We calculate that we need to make and fit over 5,400 shingles to cover the whole roof, and to fix them using these special nails will cost £250. This is where our Community run project needs your help. In exchange for £5 we will put a name of your choice on the inside of the shingle roof. For £10 we will put two names and so on. These names will remain inside the craft room for decades and will be seen by everyone who comes to learn rural crafts with us. If you like what our Community Interest Company are doing, and would like to support our stainless steel nail fund with an on-line donation, please visit www.orchardbarn.org.uk/newcraftroom.html Cheques and cash are also welcome. Our postal address is Orchard Barn, Bildeston Road, Ringshall, IP14 2LY. Or drop in between 10-4 on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and have a look at how this hand-made roof is progressing. We wish you a constructive and creative New Year - Many large thank-yous in advance of your donations.

On December 3rd we collected our Christmas Group from Gatwick airport. Of the children that had never been to the UK they all said; “England is lovely” a soon as they got off the plane! This is going to be a very exciting month for the children who have not only never been away from home but have never experienced Christmas before either. After the children return home at the end of the month I will be leaving for Belarus for our Father Frost Program. As previous Christmas parcels have been returned or just not arriving at all a friend and I decided this year to go to Belarus to deliver them personally as the Belarusian equivalent to 25th December is 7th January. Having intended to just take presents in our personal luggage we asked if anyone else would be interested in sending a present to a child who would receive nothing for Christmas and we were amazed and touched by the response. We are now taking 150 presents to needy children and will deliver to 39 families in three days plus hold a party for the children that we will be unable to reach during that time. We will bring back photos and updates after the trip to share with everyone who has so kindly contributed to this program. A very big thanks must also go to those people who have sponsored part of the trip allowing us to be able to take this many presents to the children and also to leave gifts for those in the local hospital. We are now looking towards the summer group visit and would ask anyone interested in hosting who we have not yet spoken to, to get in touch now as we have to start processing the invitation to the authorities in Belarus by January 2017. The children will be with us for four weeks from 1st to 29th July. All that is needed is a minimum of a mattress to sleep on and a loving home with people who care, Financial circumstances are immaterial. Age is not a barrier - single parents considered, Families may or may not still have their own children at home. Hosts are able to follow their own occupation/interests as the children meet at least 4 days a week Mon-Fri 8.30 to 4.30 and helpers are on hand to collect or look after children at other times if needed. We are very aware that there are now more Charitable causes than ever all needing support. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supports us, you may think you only do a little but without you we could not survive. The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding received a £25,000 Community Award from the Freemasons following an unprecedented public vote. The charity was one of 6 to be nominated by Freemasons in Suffolk, with local people voting to decide the level of their Award. They were part of almost 180,000 people who voted across England and Wales. The Community Awards are a major part of Freemasonry’s 300th anniversary celebrations. The Masonic Charitable Foundation is distributing three million pounds to 300 charities across the country, with the public vote deciding on the range of Awards from £4,000 to £25,000. Jan Derbyshire, Chairman of The Shelley Centre said: “The grant of £25,000 which we have been awarded following the public vote is hugely important and we would like to express our heartfelt and grateful thanks to everybody who took the trouble to vote for us. This is an amazing amount of money which will make such a difference to our Charity and enable The Centre to get several much-needed maintenance projects underway so that we can continue to benefit the health of wellbeing of adults and children with disabilities through riding therapies. We are also very grateful to the Masonic Charitable Foundation for this opportunity and their generosity.” The Masonic Charitable Foundation obtains all of its funding from Freemasons, their families and friends. It is estimated that half of Freemasonry’s total charitable expenditure of over £33m goes to charities that help people in communities across the country. Neville Warnes, Provincial Grand Charity Steward for the Province of Suffolk said: “We are delighted so many people in our County took part in the vote, and I know that The Shelley Centre will use their £25,000 grant to continue with their outstanding work.”

Brilliant News For Diabetics December brought some exciting news for diabetics - you may have seen it on TV or in the news. Almost 300 people took part in a trial called DIRECT (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial). Half received standard diabetes care while the others followed the “Counterweight Plus” structured weight management programme within primary care. This programme included an 800kcal a day, nutrient-complete formula diet provided by Cambridge Weight Plan for 3-5 months, gradual food reintroduction and long-term support to maintain their weight loss. The first year’s results suggest that Type 2 diabetics can achieve remission by losing a significant amount of weight following formula diet programmes. People often report quickly feeling an improved sense of well-being, feeling even better as their weight reduces. Diagnosed Type 2 diabetic 5 years ago, a recent CWP slimmer award winner’s weight increased to 23 stone over the next few years. Knowing this had to stop, so, using Cambridge Weight Plan, lost 10 stone over a 12month period. She now feels in control of her weight and says she feels healthy for the first time in her adult life. Plus, at her wedding this summer she wore a size 12 dress! So, if 2018 arrives and you’d like to take control of your weight why not try Cambridge Weight Plan to retrain your eating habits for a healthy New Year..! Cambridge Weight Plan, with over 33 years research & knowledge behind it, has 6 steps designed to enable you to lose weight, and also shows you how to make long-term changes to maintain a slim and healthy life. A happy new year all to all my readers and the team at Shelley! Since I last wrote we have had our wonderful carol service in Shelley church; it’s a real tardis the way it accommodates our huge congregation and we do thank the church team for being so welcoming. Once again, Margaret was able to drum up a small baby for the tableaux, so no doll required! Look at Sqidgey and Camilla preparing to lead the candlelit procession down the lane to the church. As all the decorations come down I thought this was a nice reminder: Parys enjoying the sun beneath a decorated overhang in the yard. We have had a lovely break (well the riders and most of the volunteers have) but I’m told work still goes on outside my nice dry warm room! People seem to be slaves to their phones, I can’t understand it, you should try switching off like me. Of course the live horses and ponies needed looking after during the holidays, can’t complain about that, can I? What is 2018 going to bring for you, I wonder? Did you know that within RDA there are proficiency tests for riders and drivers that allow people to demonstrate their skills and ability to an examiner and achieve an award with a badge and certificate upon completion? Enabling our riders to learn and achieve is an important focus of all RDA centres, in addition to the therapy and fun of being mounted on a pony (or Babs, or myself). In November we had two fantastic achievements to celebrate: Rebecca Jackaman passed her Bronze Horse Care Proficiency test, and Becky Page passed her Silver Horse Care Proficiency test ‘with flying colours’ as her examiner said. This is just like getting top marks in your specialist chosen subject on ‘Mastermind’! The details of horse care, and in depth general equine knowledge needed, to get these certificates is massive. Becky is one of only two riders in this whole region to have gained Silver. Belated congratulations to both these clever women, we think you are brilliant. I shall be listening in most carefully to the next round of learning. There is so much to know about that even a clever chap like myself can be astonished. Good luck all our learners this year and may you enjoy your journey with the RDA!
Surviving Winter in Hadleigh (and adjoining villages) After a mild winter we have spare stock of panic alarm fobs to distribute free, to those of 65 years and over. We aim to do the same for this winter but finance dictates that we restrict this to those on benefit and over 65 years of age. These fobs will also be available free to “Riding for the Disabled” and those with motorised wheelchairs. Added to our list of support will be road salt for use on ice covered footpaths to your home. All our listed charity remit items will still be available, again to those on benefit and over 65 years. Please do not be reluctant to ask for assistance if in trouble. Our charity registered remit covers a wide range and if we cannot help your particular emergency we will do our utmost to find an alternative. Don’t forget to wear your thermals!! Hadleigh Dolphins swimmer Elliot Gladwell has been crowned the U13 Boys British Modern Biathlon Champion The twelve-year-old from Ipswich School competed at the British Modern Biathlon Championships at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, Solihull, on November 25th. He was returning champion having won the U12 competition last year. Elliot entered the competition ranked number one based on his qualification earlier in the year at one of the regional trials. He has been working hard on his swim times as this is where the points can really add up and make a difference to the end result. He achieved a very good 5:01.68s for the 1600m race winning it by a 4 second margin, this gave him 1367 points. An hour later he was in the pool for the 100m swim which he completed in 1:06.72s earning 1208 points. Totalled together this gave him a 49 point advantage over the 2nd placed competitor and the U13 National title. His father Simon added: “Many congratulations to Elliot, I could tell this meant a lot to him and his hard work in training has paid off. Elliot was racing against some very good competitors both on the track and in the pool and his determination shone through. We were all very proud of him. Elliot said “I am really happy I came back this year and won again, the swim was particularly hard and I had nothing left in my arms when I finished the final length, at the time I just hoped I had done enough. Elliot who swims for Hadleigh Dolphins Swimming Club and runs for Ipswich Harriers balances his time between these clubs and his other school sports such as rugby.
Fidelis Activity News Follies: - The critics raved about it but Fidelis members wanted to see for themselves. Thanks to modern technology the ladies only had to travel to Ipswich Cineworld to experience this Sondheim musical in all its glory on the London stage. It is a spectacularly ambitious production with a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21. Familiar songs, glitzy costumes, wonderful choreography and convincing drama easily held our attention for 150 minutes without an interval. Young Marx, the play, which was transmitted live from London to Cineworld, Ipswich, presented a completely different view of this penniless, German intellectual during his stay in London’s Soho. A powerful performance by Rory Kinnear as, Marx. Harbour Lights Trio Rob, Alvar and Derek entertained a packed Dining Room with a miscellany of humorous songs and ditties which they have collected over the years. They all sang and played several different traditional folksy instruments including a mouth organ, recorder, banjo and Harbour Lights trio (l to r) Alvar Smith, concertina to name a few. Rob Neal and Derek Simpson Apart from some enjoyable audience participation when it was chorus time, Rob evoked many happy memories when he made a traditional ‘jig’ doll dance to their music. Christmas Supper. Over 50 members enjoyed the annual seasonal supper with Cheryl providing delicious food and Phil Jackson, the music. Thanks to Trevor Slaughter and John Devey for keeping up with members’ drinking needs and to Lin Slaughter for making the delightful ‘after dinner’ gifts. Happy New Year to all who follow the Fidelis column each month.

The Sun 5th Rise 08.04 Set 16.00; 15th Rise 07.58 Set 16.14; 30th Rise 07.40 Set 16.40 The Moon New 13th, Full 31st. The Planets Mars and Jupiter will put on a grand show in the pre-dawn skies as they appear to move together through Libra. Both are easily viewed with the naked-eye, and a modest pair of binoculars will reveal the principle moons of Jupiter. Mars will show no detail due to its distance, but its blood-red colour is very striking. Uranus Is in the evening skies in the constellation of Pisces, and shines at magnitude 5.8, meaning under perfect conditions it can be seen with the naked-eye, but a pair of binoculars will show it easily. Neptune Also in the evening sky, Neptune resides in the constellation of Aquarius, shining at magnitude 8, meaning a pair of binoculars is required to show this ice-blue planet. Blue Moon We've all heard and used the term ‘Blue Moon’ in our time I'm sure. Classic examples of this phenomena are teenagers cleaning bedrooms or indeed the D.I.Y project your husband started 6 months ago being completed, but what is a ‘Blue Moon’? Firstly, this is not an official astronomical term, it was actually a phrase coined in a American magazine way back in March, 1946. But it refers to a phenomenon that is quite rare and there is actually two types of ‘Blue Moon’. Number 1 is the seasonal type which occurs when the third full moon in a season of four is called a ‘Blue Moon’. These will next occur on May 18th, 2019 and August 22nd, 2021. The second type is the calendar version, which means there are 2 full moons in the period of one calendar month. These occur on the following, January 31st, 2018, March 31st, 2018 and October 31st, 2020. As I say, there is no real astronomical significance to the event, but it is a bit of fun, so be careful when you tell someone soon that their actions only happen once in a ‘Blue Moon’ as the next is in March. Whatfield CEVCP School Whatfield CEVCP School thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas 2017 celebrations. This year we enjoyed a wide variety of activities. Pupils attended St Margaret’s church to take part in a Christingle service which was especially beautiful when we lit the candles. Pupils also made a range of delicious biscuits and decorations on our Christmas crafts day, and had fun at the lovely ‘Winter Wonderland’ fair, which boasted donkey-reindeer and had real snow! Apart from all those activities staff and pupils presented a fantastic performance of a musical nativity – ‘Christmas Counts’, and performed to our largest ever audience of around 100 adults. Whatfield School has been particularly praised for ‘the atmosphere, the behaviour and attitudes of the pupils and the caring dedicated staff’. We work hard to forge our excellent links with the church and local community, and were pleased to take Christmas on the road when we visited Waterfield House for elderly people, singing a range of songs from our presentation, as well as carols, and a lively rendition of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. We also had a visit from our local PCSO, who spoke to pupils about keeping themselves safe at home and in the community. Our sporting activities continue, with success at the Hadleigh pyramid dodgeball competition, and being awarded the villages trophy in the small schools tag rugby festival. Our pupils represented Whatfield brilliantly. It just goes to show as we say about Whatfield CEVCP School, small is beautiful! We would like to wish all the readers a happy, healthy and successful 2018. We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome. Please do telephone 01473 823 309 or email whatfieldcps@talk21.com to make an arrangement to meet us. Lynne Golding, Headteacher www.whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk

The importance of being heard It’s important to each of us that we feel heard, this can be in the workplace where we have more tasks to do than we can manage or in relationships with a partner. It’s especially important for grievers to be heard. Often, when grievers tell of their loss, the listener, with good intention, shares their own loss ‘I know how you feel, I lost my husband / brother…..’ The listener has good intentions of helping the griever feel understood, but they have immediately stopped listening and started talking about themselves. Grievers need to be listened to without interruption. Ask ‘what happened?’ then stay silent, give your full attention to what you’re hearing, give good eye contact, nod. If you feel tears welling up, don’t wipe them away, let them be. It’s your authentic reaction to their story and shows how well you are listening. You may well be the only person who has truly listened. Sarah can support you through both the practical and emotional challenges sensitively and effectively. For 20 years I have supported people during difficult times in their lives, helping each one to take positive steps forward. Since my dad died, my focus is to help anyone who is grieving. Hadleigh Art Club News Art club members spent an afternoon designing their own Christmas Cards and creating cartoons with a Christmas theme. “Footsteps in the snow” was the subject selected for the afternoon the following week, this was very appropriate as flurries of snow had been falling during the week. The year ended with a Christmas party of “Quizzes and Nibbles”. The New Year sessions begin on January 9th at 2 o’clock in the Seminar Room at Hadleigh Library and new members are welcome. The first subject is “Wine Bottles and Glasses” so bring your festive season drained bottles along. The following week suggests designing a wine bottle label. That brings us to the 23rd of the month when we will be encouraged to draw onions, shallots or garlic bulbs. On the 30th. “moving water, waves, waterfalls and reflections” is a subject to exercise your memory and your imagination.

A professional hypnotherapist I have many happy former smokers as happy former clients, and I have noticed some interesting trends. I’d like to share four things I have noticed about the clients who stop smoking most easily. 1) Do it for yourself : It’s great if you have the support of your family, your spouse, your friends and those around you, but the best reason to do this is because you have decided that this is what you want. 2) Realise that cigarettes are not your friend: If cigarettes (and other types of smoking) were a friend, they would be the type of friend that always turns up begging for a handout, a loan, a free meal, a lift somewhere, and never give anything back. Do you really consider people like this to be your friends? 3) Make a list of the benefits: There are so many benefits of stopping smoking, most people can come up with a far longer list of what they are gaining what they are losing. Make the list of benefits and give some real thought to how it would be to have those things in your life. 4) Make a firm commitment to stopping: ironically, people who make up their minds resolutely, that under no circumstances, even if they have the worst cravings in the world, are they ever going to smoke again, tend to have few to zero cravings and often stop very easily. This certiďŹ cate is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis, 68 High St, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF.
James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk With the New Year comes occasion for reflection on the one that has passed and the opportunity to set priorities for the months to come. In Parliamentary terms 2017 was dominated by the Brexit process and the aftermath of a general election that called for a ‘stronger negotiating mandate’. Given the personal disappointment for the Prime Minister resulting from that election, and the huge pressure and complexity of the negotiations, it is testament to her tenacity and statesmanship that we finished 2017 progressing positively to the next stage. I now hope first and foremost that the negotiations can move forward in the most positive possible spirit, resulting in a new and comprehensive trade deal between the UK and EU. Secondly, I also hope that the fact we have made progress on Brexit can enable us to focus on some of the other mammoth challenges facing the Government on the domestic front. From the NHS and adult social care to the continuing challenge of providing opportunity for our younger generation, there is much to occupy us aside from Brexit, and I am passionate about ensuring that we deliver a reforming administration capable of offering lasting solutions. A key issue is that of social mobility, so that we avoid the stagnation of a generation, and in my view this is best boosted by higher educational attainment. I was delighted in December to learn that reading standards in our schools are the best that they have been for 15 years. This dramatic shift in children's attainment follows the 2010 reforms that changed the national curriculum to require schools to use phonics as a teaching method. The phonic process means that children are taught to read by learning individual sounds and then blending them into words. In 2012, 58% of sixyear-olds reached the phonics check pass mark. This year, 81% of six-year-olds reached that standard, with 92% reaching it by the end of Year 2. This is a credit to the hard work of our teachers, and with a more favourable ‘fairer funding’ formula for schools on the way, hopefully we can look forward to further progress in future.

‘Makers of Modern Thought’ by David Sharp Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents a series of 10 Lectures starting on Thursday 11th January 2018 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm. The course will explore the lives, ideas and legacies of some key philosophical and scientific thinkers over the last two and a half thousand years. Greeks and Hebrews posed fundamental questions about life and human nature. In India the Buddha contemplated wisdom and compassion. Aquinas saw theology as the queen of the sciences but in the Renaissance Galileo and Francis Bacon laid the foundations of modern science. Descartes and Newton heralded the Enlightenment when 'reason' was emphasised by some and criticized by others. Darwin gave us the theory of evolution which is still not accepted by everyone. Nietzsche and Marx have been called the 'masters of suspicion' where philosophy and religion are concerned, but in recent times their influence has waned. Who are the modern philosophers and what are their ideas? David has taught Religious Studies and Philosophy in schools up to A level, worked in Interfaith projects in Ipswich as faith officer and tutor for various related accredited adult courses and given talks on aspects of religion/philosophy to interested groups. He has been a WEA tutor for the last five years and attends a monthly Philosophy in Pubs evening with friends. Adult £54 (payable after the first session). Try the first session (free). Local home improvement specialists SEH BAC have been shortlisted in no less than four high-profile awards at the glazing industry’s prestigious G Awards 2017. The firm which specialises in windows, doors and conservatories is a finalist in ‘Customer Care Initiative of the Year’, ‘Retail Promotional Campaign of the Year’ as well as the highly-coveted ‘Conservatory Installer of the Year’ and ‘Installer of the Year’ awards. “The G Awards are the most soughtafter awards in our industry and to become a finalist in one category is a real feat, so to be shortlisted in four of its top awards is an incredible achievement and we couldn’t be prouder,” comments John Savage, Managing Director of SEH BAC. “For 45 years, our aim has been to combine exceptional service with the finest quality home improvements, helping homeowners achieve the house of their dreams. It’s great to see our hard work and the dedication of our team recognised in this incredible way.” With 12 hotly-contested awards up for grabs, the G Awards are the glass and glazing industry’s well-established and highly-recognised awards. Judging is completed by a group of respected industry professionals before winners are revealed at a glamourous, black-tie event in London, complete with celebrity host. Part of Suffolk-based One Group Construction – a £130m holding company which comprises specialist construction businesses, SEH BAC are no strangers to top awards. This year alone, the firm was named ‘South-East Company of the Year’ by the Master Window and Conservatory Installers Association (MWCIA). “When you consider the thousands of installers across the country, it’s a real honour to be named a finalist in both installer categories,” adds John. “This year has been amazing as we’ve celebrated 45 years of trading across the South-East. We’ve helped to transform a beloved theatre in Clacton, we’ve added some exciting new additions to our product range to give homeowners even more choice and just recently, we opened our brandnew ‘Centre of Excellence’ in Colchester, offering homeowners a better way to explore and learn more about home improvements.” “Our approach has always been customer-first, building relationships and helping them through the entire process from enquiry and purchase to installation and aftersales support. It’s great to see the positive response from homeowners to our business approach is shared by our industry peers.” Operating 16 showcentres across the South-East, East Anglia and the Home Counties, SEH BAC also offers a range of orangeries, single storey extensions and replacement conservatory roofs. Like hitting the return button on our keyboard to begin a new paragraph, so it is we find ourselves returning to the beginning of the calendar to begin a new year. Returns are a heavy feature in the bleak month of January; perhaps you will be returning unwanted Christmas gifts and of course there is the looming job of getting the tax return done, but also, we begin to return our lives to normal. Over the festive period, we allow ourselves to deviate off course for a couple of weeks. Trifle for breakfast? Why not, it’s Christmas after all. A small snifter only minutes after 10 a.m. – unheard of the rest of the year) but, well, it is the season. For a while, this freedom and laxation of the normal everyday conventions is fun and liberating; but it is not sustainable and before long, facing the idea of stuffing in one more mince pie seems more of a job than a pleasure. It is often a relief when January gets going and we can de-clutter the house from tinsel and Christmas trinkets. Bags of old and new unneeded items are taken to charity shops and the declarations of new-year resolutions are made. The idea that we don’t have to return to all our old ways is a good one. We see the new year as a time to pin down a change and if we can learn to let go of past thoughts and patterns of behaviour that have not served us positively and well previously, then that can only be to our advantage. Maybe, this year, instead of just placing our focus on the inevitable need to lose a bit of the Christmas weight gain, it would do just as well to find a few things to leave behind: forgive someone who has hurt you, or if you really can’t, at least don’t bring the resentment with you into your new year. If you have been afraid of something, now could be just the time to have a go anyway. Be kind to yourself, this is important. We all do and say silly things from time to time, but don’t let unintentional mistakes dictate the year ahead. Returning to the ordinary is good, returning to the extraordinary is wonderful. Happy New Year. www.jenny-may.com

These words come from someone I trust: “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest Matthew 11 v28. Yes, it was Jesus but what did he mean? From pure personal experience I can say; now I trust Jesus I feel his peace even when mayhem is going on in the world all around me. Paul explains this inner peace. He said “And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus Philippians 4 V7. He got it, do you? Do you want to know what this inner peace is? You can investigate and find out all about it. You don’t have to accept it but you would be daft to pass by an opportunity for peace like this. Believe me. Kenny Sanderson

Matthew Gallo – bring in the new year with a comprehensive mortgage review
NEW YEAR MORTGAGE REVIEW MATTHEW GALLO Independent Mortgage Adviser The Wrens, The Tye, Lindsey, Ipswich IP7 6PP
Mobile 07776 195 254 info@mpsgallo.com Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority
With the first Bank of England base rate increase for a decade, now is the time to have a review and fully understand your mortgage options – whether buying, selling, or staying put. An opportune time as well, to review where you and your family stand in the event of a death, an illness or loss of income. Running my own Independent Mortgage Advice firm since 1992, I have been fortunate enough to build a compliant and ethical mortgage advice service for my clients - the vast majority still referring to my firm to this day, as they move home, remortgage or simply review their residential or buy to let property mortgages and protection planning. From an advice perspective, my attitude and approach is simple and straightforward, with the only way to conduct a mortgage review, remortgage or purchase application case, being to spend time collating the facts. A thorough understanding of a clients’ personal and financial position in the first instance, with comprehensive information gathering - as well as making sure all relevant documentation is provided by my client and held on file, before any approach is made by me to a mortgage lender to discuss a case. If the case facts are understood clearly from outset by both adviser and mortgage lender, it limits any issues or misunderstanding as an application progresses. In my opinion, that is the only way to so the job properly, securing what everybody wants – a great, competitive mortgage, that is clearly explained by the adviser, completely understood by the client, and utterly meeting the needs of the borrower. I can meet you in my office above Frost & Partners Estate Agents in Hadleigh, and any initial meeting for a general conversation, would be without both charge and commitment. Matthew Gallo - tel: 07776 195254 – email: info@mpsgallo.com Matthew Gallo is authorised and regulated by The Financial Conduct Authority – Your home may be repossessed if you do not maintain your mortgage payments

First Responders receive support from Brett Valley Lodge As a Hadleigh resident and in line with the Brett Valley Lodge commitment to supporting local charities myself and my wife, Hannah, thought about where to direct the money raised by the Lodge members during my year as Master and what better way than the Hadleigh First Responders. So on Friday 22nd September I was very pleased to present a cheque on behalf of the Lodge for £2097 to Yvonne Free which will provide the following: i) The Purchase of Uniform or “Greens” (Ambulance Service Badged approved uniform) making them identifiable to everyone within the community together with Winter Jackets both complimenting the Lightweight Hi-Vis Jackets Tim Warner and Lodge Charity Steward Alan Fosker present £2097 which is the only clothing to Yvonne Free in support of provided by the local NHS Hadleigh First Responders Trust. ii) Training of new Staff with the training taking place in Newmarket which is the nearest Training Centre available. iii) Ongoing vehicle maintenance (incl. day to day running) which forms a large part of the organisations regular expenditure even having to find £800.00 per annum for Vehicle Insurance through the NHS. The organisation provides a vital service to the local community and none of us know when we might need them. Tim Warner

Suffolk Rockets Netball Club
Free Site Visits and Full Bathroom Design Service Suffolk Rockets NC still can't believe how popular and successful the club has been since it started in August, thank you to everyone who has supported us, trained with us and volunteered at the club, without you we wouldn't be here. In November Suffolk Rockets hosted their first Netball Tournament at Hadleigh High Leisure centre for 'Back to Netball' teams. Altogether 5 teams took part, two from Suffolk Rockets. It was a brilliant day, the sun was shining but there was a slight chill in the air! Everyone played amazingly and there was so much enthusiasm, passion and determination on court as well as fun, laughter and lots of friendly banter! The winners were 'Barnardiston' from West Suffolk. Both Suffolk Rockets teams improved from their previous tournaments scoring more goals, giving away less penalties and putting into practice what they have learnt in training we are very proud of them. Back to Netball training starts again 3rd January 8-9pm Hadleigh high leisure centre (outdoors) our first session back is Free so come along and give it a go! Our youth teams had their last league games on 6th December which was the battle of the Rockets as they played against each other 'Cosmic Rockets V Saturn Rockets'. It was a great game to watch with both teams being very competitive and showing off their defending skills which led to a low scoring game but Saturns took the win 8-3 to secure themselves a 3rd place position in the league and Cosmics sitting in at 4th place - not bad considering it's their first season! Players POM Cosmic Tilly and Saturn Brooke, Coaches POM Cosmic Holly and Saturn Bethany H. If you would like more information on the junior club please contact the club. A huge thank you to Hadleigh Town Council for providing the club with funding of £480 which will help the club with new kit, new equipment and support the coaches/umpires with training courses. Come and Join us at Hadleigh High Leisure Centre For Walking Football Our Walking Football session at Hadleigh High Leisure Centre is going from strength to strength since we relaunched the session in September, so much so we have just added an extra session on a Wednesday evening in addition to our Monday evening session. We spoke to two of our regular members to have a Q& A with them both to see what they thought of the sessions and the benefits of walking football - Chris, 71 years young and Geoff, 72 years young. 1. Why did you decide to try Walking Football rather than ‘normal’ football? As it's a long time since I last played, walking football seemed like the ideal option – Chris. I am 72 and whereas ordinary football would probably be too much for me, Walking Football is great. - Geoff 2. What is it you enjoy most about Walking Football? Just to be playing football again is great, it's terrific fun with a great group of people that all get on really well – Chris. I enjoy most the fact that at my age I can still actually play my favourite sport - Geoff 3. Would you say Walking Football has improved your fitness? Yes definitely – Chris. Walking Football is definitely improving my fitness – Geoff 4. Would you say Walking Football has other benefits, perhaps social or improvements in general wellbeing? Definitely, as well as being good exercise, it's great fun too in a friendly atmosphere – Chris. Other benefits are the enjoyment gained from being with lovely people and the sense of satisfaction I feel after every session – Geoff 5. Would you recommend Walking football to others? Yes I would, everyone is made welcome, we have ladies that come and really enjoy it too – Chris. I would recommend it to anyone – Geoff 6. Do you find it difficult NOT to run and what advice could you give someone in how to remain at walking pace? You soon get used to not running – Chris. I don't find it difficult not to run now but I would advise anyone to take their time to adjust to the sport – Geoff 7. What advice would you give to someone who would like to play but is nervous about attending a Walking Football session for the first time? No need to be nervous we have a very friendly group, it's all good fun and with the 1st session free, there's nothing to lose! – Chris I was a bit nervous before my first session but everyone made me welcome. There is no pressure from anyone, no one is trying to impress or going over the top. Everyone wants to enjoy themselves with like-minded people all of whom love football and are very happy to be able to play the game again after what for most of us has been a long time. It's Brilliant. – Geoff Sessions are held Mondays and Wednesdays 6 - 7pm £3.50 per session .If you would like to find out more about the sessions or to book contact - hadleighreception@ssleisure.co.uk or telephone 01473 823470

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Our last meeting Monday 11th December 2017: this saw us hold our annual quiz which, as you would expect, had a gardening theme. Rounds covered included 'missing letters', 'who am I?', 'beans', a picture round on well known gardens and ending with a music round. My music taste is varied, but in setting it I stretched the boundaries of anyone's collection, covering artists as diverse as Jasper Carrott (yes, the surname was the very loose gardening connection!), Kate Bush (you're probably getting the idea by now), The Goodies (if you are struggling with that the answer was Graeme Garden!). The overall winner of the 2017 competitions was Kate Banks(pictured) - congratulations! Our next meeting on Monday 8th December 2018: we kick off 2018 with a talk by Jane Haylock on medieval gardens. I cannot recall us having covered this subject at the garden club before, so we look forward to learning more. January's competition is 'cacti or succulent' so why not look on your windowsill for your best specimen and bring it along - you could be a winner! As always the meeting will be held in Hadleigh Town Hall (entrance opposite The Ram) and starts at 7.30pm. Entrance is just ÂŁ1 for members and ÂŁ3 for non members, refreshments and a cheery welcome included in the price! We look forward to seeing you. Andy Leeder, Chairman

Cleve West We are all very excited in anticipation of our Celebrity Speaker, one of the country’s leading garden designers, Cleve West. We are extremely lucky to have persuaded him to come to Suffolk, as he rarely gives talks, but he will be telling us of his passionate involvement with Horatio’s Garden. Many will remember Horatio Chapple, aged 17, who was tragically killed by a polar bear whilst on an Arctic expedition. His father was a spinal surgeon at Salisbury Hospital, where Horatio worked as a volunteer. Horatio always thought that the hospital should have a Healing Garden, and after his death contributions flooded in. Cleve designed Horatio’s Garden, and his talk is entitled Healing Gardens. He will speak from a personal perspective on how gardens can enhance well-being, and of their therapeutic effect. Examples range from private sanctuaries, his own allotment and the much -celebrated Horatio’s Garden. Cleve is the winner of 6 Chelsea Gold Medals, and 2 Best in Show Medal, and much more. He will be at Chamberlin Hall in Bildeston, on February 17th, tickets and information are available from Matthew Long on 01449 741551, advance booking only. The new season starts with our annual visit to Anglesey Abbey on Saturday 6th January, for a walk in the Winter Garden, which should blow the Christmas cobwebs away. The first meeting of the year will be at Hitcham Village hall in February 3rd, where the speaker is Julian Ives, whose talk - Controlling Garden Pests and Attracting Wildlife- should be most interesting. Julian trained at RHS Harlow Carr, and Writtle College, before setting up his own business to advise on pest control, and how to make gardens a safe environment for wildlife. Please look online for information on forthcoming talks and outings, and details of how to join us, new members are always welcome. Wishing a Very Happy New Year to all our Gardening Members and friends, Erica Bolam, Chairman. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Down to Earth ...with Dave The cold and snow has put a check on most activity on the allotment and in the garden, not that I am complaining as we really do need some hard frosts to kill off some of the pests and to help break down the soil. Also thawing snow seems to penetrate the ground much better than rain. Over the last few very mild winters this lack of frost has been missed. Just before it turned very cold I did manage to get the garlic sown. The bulbs are split into single cloves and planted with the pointed tip to the top. They should be planted just below the surface, if they do get pulled up by birds then just push them back down into the soil. To keep the birds off mine they are covered with last year's pea sticks. The closer together the cloves are planted then the smaller they will be. If you grow the elephant garlic they can get to quite a size and need more room. All garlic needs a period of cold so as to form good sized bulbs by next year, don't use supermarket bought garlic as it's not suitable for home growing. One advantage with having a heated greenhouse is that no matter what the weather there is always something to get on with. Recently when in there I noticed that some of the over wintered fuchsias were looking a bit poorly. On tipping the plants out, sure enough they were found to have the nasty little C shaped vine weevil grubs eating away at the roots. With luck the plants will survive in fresh new compost and a drench with vine weevil killer. It is fortunate that a new treatment has just gone back on the market. The old compost should be destroyed. Now that the soil is moist it is a good time to go round the beds with a generous layer of mulch, old grow bags, homemade compost or mushroom compost would be ideal. In an ideal world now would be a good time to wash pots ready for the spring. Clean, sharpen and oil the numerous tools hanging up in the shed, use linseed oil on the wooden handles and old engine oil on the blades. Have the lawnmower serviced, sort through the many packets of seeds that have gathered over the years and discard the oldest of them. Some seeds though will last well past their use by date if they have been kept in a tin and in a cool place. Wash and dry the best of the bamboo canes, then put them somewhere dry, discard the bent and broken ones. I won't say how many of these tasks I have managed to do. Finally keep the birds' water and feed topped up at all times, they get to know where it is and become regular visitors. A lot of pleasure can be had from watching the birds splashing about in what to us is freezing cold water. Happy New Year, Dave

The walk is an easy 9 miles with only a very small amount of road walking. From February onwards we will revert the walk date to the second Saturday of each month. See the website for further details. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Kersey Mill Newsletter Well 2017 has been a fantastic and very memorable year for Kersey Mill. Quite considerable progress with the restoration has been made. We are now mid-way through the restoration of the Hurst Frame with this due to be completed in 2018 before we move onto repairing the machinery that is associated with the Hurst Frame. The Highlight surely was being able to see the line shaft turn by water power, the last time this turned was around 100 years ago. “Drive it day” was a huge success with thousands of visitors. What a privilege it was to have some of the world’s most beautiful vintage vehicles on display. We are looking forward to “Drive it day 2018”. This will be held on April 22nd, so polish up & dust off your special vehicle to get the season underway. You are all welcome and entry for display vehicles is free. There are numerous open days planned for 2018 and these can be found on the kersey mill website. Kersey Mill now has a public access defibrillator located within the refurbished telephone box, it can now be found adjacent to the flower shop. We hope it is not needed but worth knowing of its existence! The year ended with Santa’s Workshop attracting more visitors than ever before from near and far. This was a demonstration of amazing support for an event that now attracts visitors from literally miles away. London Essex Cambridgeshire to name but a few. We also welcomed back groups of disabled & disadvantaged children a group of deaf children from The Ipswich Children’s Deaf Society where guided through their magical experience with an interpreter who was signing for them and many other children who attended with their friends and family. Many thanks to Cobwebbs at Elmsett Glass & Craft Babyartuk, All Seasons Marquees and all those that helped stage the event especially the amazing Santa’s Workshop team that have worked so very hard to produce an event to be very proud of. We would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported us throughout the year and wish you all a very happy healthy and prosperous New Year.
Thankyou I would like to thank all my family for a surprise party in a big house in the Norfolk conutryside - we all had a wonderful time. Eileen

Most children have excellent sight and do not need to wear glasses. Some children may have vision screening done at school (between the ages of four and five). However, the earlier any problems are picked up, the better the outcome. If there are problems and they are not picked up at an early age, the child may have permanently reduced vision in one or both eyes. If you have any concerns about your child’s eyes, or if there is a history of squint or lazy eye in the family, do not wait for the vision screening at school. Bring your child to D J Dunstone Optometry for an eye examination (sight test), which we carry out free of charge under the NHS for children under 16. For children (for a limited period) the taking of a digital retinal image (photograph) will be free of charge and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) retinal scans just £15. Please see dunstoneinsight.com to take a look at an infographic on the stages of development of your child’s eyes or watch a video with your child to find out what happens during an eye examination. A link is also available for further information about the problems children might have with their eyes, including lazy eye and colour deficiency. Your child does not have to be able to read or talk to have an eye examination. It is recommended to bring children in for eye examination between the age of between 3 and 4 years of age or sooner should you suspect a problem with vision or if there is a family history of sight problems. Please contact D J Dunstone Optometry on 01473 823755 if you have any questions or to make an appointment.
A Huge Thank You from the Alison Fracella Research Trust and the Brendan Oakes Trust A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Ansell Centre on Saturday 25th November to give us such fantastic support at our 6th joint Quiz Night. The Centre was packed for the event, we had 20 teams! Everyone said what a great evening it was with lots of fun and laughter. The chocolate tasting round was an especially big hit as was the Ploughman’s Supper. On the night, after all expenses, we raised a fantastic ÂŁ1,242 which we have divided between our two charities. Almost every penny raised will go towards the work we are supporting as our charities have minimal administration costs. The Brendan Oakes Trust supports teenagers facing cancer and the Alison Fracella Research Trust is helping to fund research into brain cancer, especially in young people, at the Royal Marsden Hospital. A big thank you to Avis Newsprint for printing our tickets and for selling them for us in the shop. Special thanks to Sue and Roy, to Kathy, Graham and to David for all their hard work. Many thanks also to the people who were so generous in their donations of the many fantastic raffle prizes too numerous to mention. A huge thank you to Orwell Lady Cruises, to Hadleigh Tyres, to The Copper Kettle at Kersey Mill, to the Barber Stop, to Coes, to Mercedes Benz, to the Beauty Gallery at Lavenham and to Paul and Marion of “Wakey Wakeyâ€? . It would be fantastic to see everyone again next year! Please save the date- Saturday 24th November 2018! Thank you again to everyone who gave us such very generous support. Sue and Rob Kettlewell and Val and Mark Oakes

Hadleigh Orchestra Conductor: Ute Cooper Leader: Lisa Patchett A very special thank you to all the people who supported our Christmas Concert. It was a record attendance - was this due to being a week earlier than usual? – a week later and the snow would have made the concert virtually impossible! And there was a record offertory. Thanks to you we have been able to make a donation to St. Joseph’s church for heat and light and sent £200 to the United Nations Refugee Appeal. Thank you for your support. Rehearsals start again on Monday Jan. 15th. 7.30 – 9.30 p.m. at Beaumont Community School. Have you thought of joining the orchestra? We have room for more people in practically every department. If you learnt as a youngster and want to get back into playing, or if you learnt as an adult (like me) and feel ready to try your hand at orchestral playing, we are the ideal group for you to join. Especially now, as we start the term with fresh music and our summer concert will not be until June. If you would like to know more, please give me a ring on (01473) 827242, or Lynn on (01206) 323636. John Druce (Chairman)

New year, New you in 2018? by Hadleigh Osteopaths
Suffolk Rug Care
At the beginning of the new year, many people made New Year resolutions, and unsurprisingly, a considerable number of these will have been health related. Gyms and swimming pools see their number of visitors swell, as people commit to the 'new year, new me' mentality. Lots of people just want to shift a few pounds gained over the winter, whilst others just want to get fit. Some people decide to take up a challenge, such as running the marathon or take up new sports and hobbies, such as golf or rowing. Some of us just want to have a healthier lifestyle. Towards the end of January and February we often see people at Hadleigh Osteopaths who have developed unaccustomed joint strains or unfamiliar aches and pains, and these can often be traced back to enthusiastic or unfamiliar exercise at the start of the year. Lots of people sustain minor niggling injuries, but continue to train, and as time passes, the little niggles can either affect their performance, or force them to stop altogether. As the initial motivation fades, and the resolution weakens, people often need little more than an achey back, or sprained knee, and a night in front of the tv seems altogether more appealing than heading off to the gym. Even the regular athlete tends to have a period of rest over the winter, and a return to sport in the new year can be a bit of a surprise, particularly if the break from activity has been longer than expected. Frozen pitches result in cancelled matches, and frustrated gardeners are thwarted in their attempts to get out into the garden, and often spend much more time in an armchair, looking at seed catalogues than actively gardening. If your New Years resolution includes getting fit and staying healthy, it might be time to pay us a visit at our practice at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure, Stonehouse Road. We have been established in the area for over 25 years and are a team of 3 Registered Osteopaths. You can contact the practice on 01473 828585 to book with the receptionists or call 077707 46224 for enquiries, or via our website at www.hadleighosteopaths.co.uk

Surprised golfers walked into their changing room and found a pop up art gallery - featuring themselves. Artist Neil Jacobs had secretly been painting portraits of his fellow members of the Saturday Morning Ultimate Golf Society (SMUGS) at Newton Green Golf Club. He then hung them on the pegs in the club changing room as the 16-strong group turned up for one of their weekly sessions. Neil, an 88-year-old former college head of art, used photos of his golfing friends to make sure he was able to achieve remarkable likenesses of them all. One said: “The paintings provided a wow factor for his golfing friends and others who passed through the changing room that day. His creative talents and ideas of causing surprises never cease to amaze admirers of his work, and his golf his pretty good too.” The paintings were on display before the annual festive lunch and annual meeting of the SMUGS, which decided to donate £150 to the Sudbury Kernos centre and £300 for shrubs for landscaping at the club.

Celebrating Christmas at Stoke The men members at Stoke by Nayland celebrated Christmas with their annual Yuletide competition followed by Christmas Lunch and a Casino. It was a cold, crisp morning that greeted the competitors on the Gainsborough Course for a shotgun start to their competition, unfortunately on winter greens because of the frost. The new Men’s Captain, Alan Line, had organised a team of elves to be at the half way hut with very welcome mulled wine, hot sausage rolls and mince pies. The winners were last year’s Junior Captain, Matt Thompson and Ian Benson with 50 points. They were presented with Christmas Hampers by the Captain.
