Ipswich Town Football Club teams up with Active Schools Ipswich Town Football Club has joined the drive to get more youngsters active, becoming the £80,000 Active Schools project’s first ambassador. Launched in July last year by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, in partnership with NHS West Suffolk and NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and supported by Active Suffolk; the three-year Active Schools project aims to increase the number of people taking part in sport and physical activity. Funded by an £80,000 investment – with £25,000 from each of the district councils and £15,000 from the two CCGs respectively, Active Schools will engage with 20 schools across Babergh and Mid Suffolk, with Active Suffolk already working closely with 15. Ipswich Town Football Club supports and advocates the project’s key aspiration to enable young people in Babergh and Mid Suffolk to lead an active lifestyle. Through their Community Trust, they will provide access to initiatives that include sport, education, community engagement and health, working with Active Suffolk and partners to maximise the number of opportunities for young people to be physically active. Jason Curtis, Head of Community at Ipswich Town Football Club, said: “We are delighted to support this programme which mirrors our own ambitions to increase physical activity in schools creating a stronger, healthier more active community as a consequence. “It offers us the chance to be able to encourage children to get active both within school time and when they play with us outside of the classroom providing extra-curricular opportunities from open access level to our academy.” www.activesuffolk.org

Fidelis Activity News A Pool for All The Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre was the venue for a talk by Tracey Loynds and Kate Germany. Tracey expanded on the owners, Abbeycroft Leisure’s remit for the venue which offers both sport and social facilities for the community. Members also saw the plans for the new state of the art pool which should be opening in autumn 2020. To effect the changeover and keep the overall costs down, it will be necessary to close the pool for a while which is understandable but tricky for keen swimmers. Our thanks to Tracey and her team for providing delicious refreshments to accompany an interesting, informative presentation. Club Jolly As the group opted to postpone their Christmas meal to a less crowded month a ‘January Jolly’ at the Hintlesham Golf Club was enjoyed instead. A welcome drink on arrival was followed by a tasty two course meal with all (L to R) Kay Whittle, Lyn Oxford, the trimmings but minus Julie Davies at Hintlesham Golf Club the ever faithful turkey. Our own room and round tables greatly added to the ambience and the comfort of any straggling male golfers. Lunch Bunch This month’s foodie gathering was at the Corncraft Tearoom within the Bridge Farm Barns complex. Delicious freshly cooked food and a shopping opportunity was much appreciated by all diners. Charity Support The group made a donation to St Elizabeth Hospice, Ipswich in memory of the late Lin Slaughter who was Vice President and active member for many years. The total amount collected in her name was £971.23.

It is a common perception that grief is a linear process of moving through various stages, starting with shock and denial, and finally moving into hope and acceptance. In practice the experience is often much more complex with our feelings propelling us backwards and forwards like a roller coaster. This fluctuation in mood can even happen during the space of a day and many people mention evenings as being a time when a sense of aloneness is felt more acutely. Triggers may also be a challenge to us. Birthdays, anniversaries, films, music, holidays and places are among the most common types of events and experiences that suddenly bring back a memory of times we spent with loved ones and affect us emotionally. In our groups we share such experiences and challenges and find that by expressing how we are feeling and by supporting each other we lessen the intensity of our pain and our feelings of aloneness. If this blog is meaningful for you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Jonathan Lambert Bespoke Jewellers & Goldsmiths Jeweller & Goldsmith, Jonathan Lambert, can trace his family history in fine jewellery back to Francis Lambert, a goldsmith in London from 1795. Interestingly, the family business which he now runs in partnership with his wife Yasmin, is not very different to the original business in London over 200 years ago. The Lavenham based business still designs and creates fine jewellery for discerning clients from all over the world and has a fully equipped on-site workshop for the repair and restoration of fine jewellery. Yasmin, who has a 1st class honours degree in Fine Jewellery from London’s prestigious Central St Martins, still designs fine jewellery in a time-honoured fashion, using watercolours to illustrate designs before showing them to prospective clients. Once approved, Yasmin’s designs are then passed to Jonathan who oversees their creation in gold, platinum or silver in the workshop. Jonathan, who is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, a past Chairman of the National Association of Goldsmiths and an Honorary Life Member of the National Association of Jewellers, can also advise clients on the sympathetic restoration of antique jewellery and the adjustment, repair and remodelling of their treasured pieces. The Home Library Service let the library come to you Did you know, that, as well as being located on Hadleigh’s high street, we also offer a home library service? The Home Library Service is run by friendly volunteers who regularly visit people in their own home who are unable to get to a library due to mobility issues or disability. The Home Library Service volunteers deliver books, audiobooks and large print titles so no one has to miss out on the pleasure of reading - or having someone to talk to. The service is free and operates across Suffolk and the volunteers are reference and DBS checked. The Home Library Service is also available to care and residential homes as well as if you are at home recovering from an operation or illness. You can borrow several items at a time and it’s not just the books that are of benefit. Some of the customers the service visits may not see many people during the week so it provides much needed social interaction with volunteers happy to stay for a chat. U9 Dodgeball Event On 9 January, we sent a team to play in the U9 Dodgeball event at Hadleigh High School. They played against pupils from across the Hadleigh pyramid of schools. On 17 January 2020 the children from Robin class entered an Under 7 multi skills event held at Hadleigh High School. Pupils were mixed with pupils from other schools to form teams and then competed against each other in small tasks to score as many points as possible. A fun time was had by all. Roman Wow Day On the 23 January Key Stage 2 pupils took part in an enrichment event all about the Romans. Pupils came to school dressed as Romans and took part in a range of activities. The morning began with some background information about the Romans, where they came from, their journey to Britain and life during that time. Pupils then divided into their classes. They either took part in a game called Delta, completed a quiz or listened to a talk about Roman artefacts - actually touching those artefacts to help bring the history to life. During the afternoon pupils looked at and tried on Roman armour and saw the weapons that they used. Pupils then took part in a mock battle. Wow days fire up childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s imaginations and fill them full of enthusiasm about the topics they are studying. Suffolk Energy from Waste Trip On Monday 27 January, we took pupils in Kingfisher class on a science trip to the Suffolk Energy-from-Waste facility, in Great Blakenham. Within a packed two hour tour, they explored the visitor centre and had a tour of the facility. Thanks go to Oliver for his time! Swimming Panathlon Pupils across our federation were taken along to a swimming Panathlon event on Friday 31st January where they took part in individual races as well as team events. Each pupil came away with a medal and certificate for taking part. PTFA Cinema Night Friday Our PTFA ran one of their very successful cinema nights for the children on Friday 7 February. All of the children came and relaxed on bean bags and cushions to watch one of their favourite movies, whilst enjoying popcorn!! Thank you to our PTFA for their continued support! My photos this month show boys from Chalk Hill School in Sudbury enjoying their Thursday morning at the Centre. You’ll see they like chatting to the horses’ heads. Funnily enough none of the lads is keen to pick hooves, groom, or sweep up poos whilst visiting us! Part of their therapy is to learn responsibility, gentleness around the ponies, good manners and listening skills. No swearing allowed, always thank the helpers and your own horse after a ride and of course if you don’t listen to instructions you can come a big cropper. Their Coach and our chairman, Jan, stands no nonsense and she and her team thoroughly enjoy helping theses boys to a better attitude and building confidence in their own abilities. When all six boys turn up it’s a great ride to watch. I like seeing six of our live herd in the arena together, with competent riders aboard, no side walkers, and Jan putting them through their paces. One photo shows the whole ride setting out to enjoy a road hack, something our able bodied riders enjoy enormously. Shelley is such a great place to spend time in; even though I never get out of my ‘room’ I hear all about it and can guess our lads enjoy being out of the arena for a change. So do their mounts! Out on the roads we have to have our volunteers dressed in high viz jackets, obviously. At this time of year that’s no problem, but in high summer something about the jackets attracts black flies, and they get covered in the little perrishers. So Spring weather is just perfect for us all. Don’t forget we have 11 animals here all producing a wonderful by-product for gardeners, and if you’d like some for your compost heap, you know where we are! Bring your own bucket, and make a small donation to the Centre and the horses will keep on producing: win win! Well, behind all the fun for our clients there is the vast body of volunteer work that keeps us all going. Confidence Café Elmsett Confidence Café is held in St Peter’s Church, Elmsett on the first Monday of every month 11.30 – 2pm. Absolutely everyone is invited to come along for a drink, baked potato lunch and a homemade pudding. We welcome everyone from Elmsett and of course the surrounding Villages and Towns. Hadleigh Cycling On Show

28th March, Saturday 9.30 - 1 This is a cycling event for everyone. Young and not so young, fit and not so fit, the beginners and the experienced, for short and longdistance riders. If you haven’t got a bike or it’s stuck at the back of your shed you’re welcome to come along and we’ll help you get started. The show, at the Ansell Centre, will be opened officially by Steve Allman, Mayor of Hadleigh at 9.30. There will be stalls, bikes and information on cycling opportunities for you to sign up for. You can have a free bike check, practice changing an inner tube, buy second hand cycle clothing, check out child and adult electric bikes and sign up for a regular club or social ride. There will be a chance to enrol for the Junior Club which will start up again at the Primary School in April. The event is entirely free and the aim is to encourage as many people to get out on bikes this year. The message is “ride as much or as little, or as long or as short as you feel, just ride”. For new or old members of the Club, come along and pay this year’s membership fee (£12.50 individuals and £35.00 family). As well as the 50% off club kit offer, we are introducing a grant for members (up to £250) to promote cycling in Hadleigh and enhance the cycling experience of individual or groups of members. Hadleigh Walkers We had another good turnout (21) for our February walk around Lavenham. A number of walkers expressed surprise that they managed to complete the 10 miles without problem Our March walk on Saturday 14th will be a circular walk of 9 miles from the Alton Waters Visitor Centre, Holbrook Road, Stutton, IP9 2RY. We will meet up at the centre car park at 0930. There is a £3 parking fee at the centre that can be redeemed at the dining area. From the centre we will follow a counterclockwise route via Alder Carr, Queech Farm, Stutton Mill then follow the banks of the River Stour to Graham’s Wharf, then inland via Little Hall, Ray Tree Farm, Stutton Church, past The Royal Hospital School to Wall Farm Wharf, Holbrook Mill and, finally across the reservoir dam and back to the car park. A little bit of everything in terms of scenery! We should be back at the car park by 1330. If anyone is without transport it would help if you let us know via the website contact page so arrangements can be made if possible with someone leaving from Hadleigh. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will almost certainly muddy or rough in places. We are still planning April’s walk but, looking a little further out to October, we have booked the Community bus and will organise a walk on the River Deben centred around the Ramsholt Arms pub. Space may be limited on the bus so please let Gerie, Hugh or me have a note of interest so we can gauge numbers . Unusual item revealed! The item is a Bull Mask, it was put on to a bulls head if it became fractious when it was shown in the ring at a country show or similar. Whatfield Carpet Bowls Club Following a welcome break for Christmas and the New Year, our first game of 2020 was at home to Elmsett, with a win of 8-2. The next game, also at home, was against Hadleigh with another win of 6-4. During a break in January, several members of the club travelled to Potters for the day to enjoy the World Championship Bowls event. The first match in February was away to Polstead where we lost 4-6. The following week, again at home, this time our opponents were Stutton, with the result another win 8-2. Since being elected in 2015, I have been inundated by constituents exacerbated by the lack of rail ticketing options for part-time commuters. As such, in March 2016, I held my first adjournment debate on the subject of ‘Flexible ticketing’ where I was able to share publicly some of this correspondence. I read an email from Deborah of Sudbury who argued: “Flexible season tickets would encourage more people to work from home some days, which would reduce overcrowding on the trains, and would benefit South Suffolk, as more people would have time to spend their London wages locally. It is very old-fashioned to think that workers go to their office every day and we should not be penalised for flexible working”. I also read out a piece from a constituent called Russell, from Nayland, who had done the maths: “It is becoming increasingly common for people to work from home, yet we are still forced to pay the season tickets for the entire week, month or year. For me, that means paying for 365 days of travel, when in fact I only travel on 208 of these… On the basis of me paying £5,520 a year (i.e. £15.12 a day), this means I am really overpaying for 173 days a year – i.e. a full £2615.76”. Since the debate I have continued to beat the drum in Parliament, so I was delighted when the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, announced on New Year’s Day that his department would be trialling part-time season tickets. Better still, at his recent HS2 ‘Rail Infrastructure’ statement I asked the Prime Minister to go further and roll this trial out nationwide, and he replied that this was the Government’s “intention”. Of course, there may be a national financial cost of extending flexible ticketing, but I am convinced that this change would create new opportunities for local people to return to employment. By removing a financial disincentive to part-time commute to London or Chelmsford, where there can be a wider range of opportunity and higher wages, flexible ticketing could encourage residents to take advantage of opportunities they may otherwise have discounted.

Squirrels (Reception) and Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) Our topic this half term has been toys. The children have enjoyed learning about old and new toys. Even getting to make their own toy at a special toy workshop. Getting to use drills, glue guns and hammers to create. Well done to the children for their sensible behaviour and engagement while creating. They also enjoyed making bird feeders and taking part in the RSPB bird watch. Badgers (Years 3 and 4) We have had great fun this term in developing our knowledge of the Ancient Egyptians. We have started to design of own canopic jars and finding out how mummies are made. We never knew it took such a long time! We enjoyed our trip to Colchester Zoo and used it to write some fantastic pieces of writing. We have also been developing our fractions knowledge in maths, we been speaking lots about cake and pizza! Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class have been busy as usual this spring term. In January on a cold winter’s day we went to Colchester Zoo. It was rather chilly! Some highlights included seeing the baby white rhino and seeing the tigers, giraffes and zebras. The zoo staff taught us about predators and prey. Thank you to Kersey School ‘Friends’ for enabling us to go on our lovely trip. We have enjoyed our English story/novel Pax by Sara Pennypacker. This is the story of a young boy Peter and his pet fox Pax. He had to leave Pax behind in the woods due to the war, now he has run away to try to find him. Spring is in the air at Hadleigh Market Despite the stormy weather over the last couple of weeks, I am seeing signs of spring all around; daffodils are opening, leaves are unfurling and the days are getting lighter and slightly longer. The arrival of spring always brings optimism to Hadleigh Market which, in the midst of winter can feel very desolate and bleak despite the incredible support of our amazing loyal, weekly customers. It is now that we start to get more enquiries from interested stallholders, inquisitive to know about how they might be able to join this wonderful weekly market and so over the next few months we hope you will enjoy meeting new traders. Recent visitors to the market will have met Chris of Azure Wood Fired Pizza. He has a very smart trailer set up which contains a wonderful, portable pizza oven and from 9am every Friday you can enjoy crispy based, wood fired pizzas straight from the oven. Frenchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Care Haven It has been a busy time at Frenchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s over Christmas and the New Year with our move back near Hadleigh. It has taken months to repair and prepare the new grounds for our animals to be safe in and for our animals and equipments to arrive and has taken every penny we had to do so. On the weekend of 28th-29th December we moved in at Castlings Heath and all went well. I have to say stress wise it was something I do not want to do again in a hurry, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for sure! Thank goodness for the help of our volunteers, Dr John Flathers, John Purser, his friend Mike, Ken and David. Their hands on fixing repair and replace, time and energy has been a life saver for our Charity and they have all been amazing, along with the support of Charmaine. Helping and becoming involved in a positive way for a good cause like Frenchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s which combines the care of animals and the care of people, whilst being outside in a lovely environment with wild life around, is something that more people should do. It can only be a plus in my book, as it helps people of all ages with their physical and mental well being, while working in a beautiful natural environment. I urge others who have some time to come along and join us on our volunteer day Wednesdays. On our list of volunteers needed is someone who could help us with any fixing of equipment, someone who is hands on and not frightened to get stuck in, as they say. We are trying to raise the money for a composting toilet for our Costa one of our cheeky Donkeys volunteers, so far we have had ÂŁ400 donated in grant aid from Boxford & Groton United Charities and we have raised ÂŁ200 through donations, we now are left to raise ÂŁ600 to reach the amount needed for our toilet. If there is any way you can help with a donation or by holding, organising something for us like a quiz, dance, curry night, or something else, we would be most grateful to hear from you. You are welcome to roll up your sleeves and help with some Poo picking in our donkey and pony paddocks and if you would like, give one of our ponies a brush over and some TLC. At the moment there seem to be lots of changes and unrest in the world, our country and locally. Some of these are good some may not be. In many countries there is conflict. In peoples lives there maybe heartbreak and sadness. We experience stormy weather. However, there are signs of hope. There are spring flowers opening in gardens that bring us hope of warmer weather and summertime. There are many people working for peace in conflict zones. There are also professionals and volunteers offering support and help for people going through tough times. Where else can we find hope in a changing and difficult world? In ourselves? Friday 24th January saw 126 members together with their families and friends packed into Hadleigh Town Hall as Brett Valley Lodge held their very popular annual Burns Supper. The evening was extra special for the lodge as we were very pleased to welcome the Provincial Grand Master for Suffolk. As is usual a raffle was held and the magnificent sum of £900 was raised which will be distributed to local charities in due course. Also present as guests of the Lodge were representatives from Hadleigh Swimming Club and Volunteers from Felixstowe Coastwatch who received donations to assist them in their work. During the last four years the lodge has made charitable donations totalling £28,956 - in the main our support goes to charities within the immediate area. Our thanks to John Adams for his ‘Address to The Haggis’ which was much enjoyed as always by all present and of course not forgetting ‘Monarch of The Glen’ Peter Pryke whose playing of the bagpipes is legendary, well in Hadleigh at least! I don’t know who Ciara and Dennis are but they made a dreadful mess in the garden. Mum was nearly blown over when she went out to check the kennels and stables.The dramatic storms may be a distant memory now but our volunteers are still repairing the damage. It’s been a rough year so far.Apart from battling the elements, we lost dear old Peg, one of our Kune Kune pigs.She and her lifelong pal, Bob, arrived a few years ago after their owner died. Sadly Peg became ill recently and on the morning of her demise, Bob was laying by her side with his head laid across her. As you may imagine, a few tears were shed that day. I also suffered a much smaller loss when the Vet removed three of my teeth. It can’t be my fault, although every time Mum tried to clean them I bit her just to let her know they were still there. Perhaps I should have let her clean them. We have lots of bargains ready for our £1 Sale on 14th March at Newton Green Village Hall, CO10 0QS. Don’t miss it, if only for the delicious homemade cakes! Which reminds me, it’s nearly dinner time! It’s so cold, even the cats are staying in and taking over our dog beds. Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 24 (Spring 2020) In ’Structural relocation: moving house – literally!’ the story told is of a timber-framed building lost to our village. By the description Issue 34 Spring 2020 Price £4 and photograph of its new location in Essex, the Bake House would have become a Grade II listed building if it had remained on its original site. Newspapers reporting the move of eighty miles credited work of dismantling and rebuilding to A.A. Death, a London company of contractors. The actual building firm involved was that of Albert Arthur Death (1877-1933), proprietor of Newberry Works, on the corner of High Street and Ipswich Road in Bildeston. In 1899, the county of West Suffolk was created for local government administration with all-male electors going to the polls for the first county council elections, which took place at the end of January. During the campaigning period, the community of Bildeston became divided in its political affiliations between two candidates standing for the Bildeston Division, Revd James Beck (1819-1896) and Thomas Nunn Scarfe (1840-1904). Representing the Tory Party, James, a justice of the peace, had been rector since 1879, when he had automatically become chairman of the parish vestry. Although born in Bildeston, Thomas had made his money as a draper in Holborn, London, and had returned to the village in retirement; he stood for the Liberal Party. Disagreement between their supporters went beyond politics so much so that Baptist minister Revd Richard Elgar Willis (1863-1934) became involved. Not only were speeches and arguments played out in the village streets but also in local newspapers with the result being only eight votes between the candidates. Picture feature ‘Saying “thank you and farewell” to our doctors’ reveals the enthusiasm with which patients of Bildeston and surrounding villages expressed their feelings of appreciation to Dr Ian Granger in 1970 and Dr Keir Fisher in 1993. Also told in photographs are consequences of events on 24 April 2004 when Chamberlin Hall caught fire. Thank goodness for insurance! I would like to thank Tom Elmer of Bildeston, David Granger of Naughton and Oswald Simpson of Elmsett for contributing respectively photographs, newspaper cuttings and postcards to this issue. Looking to the future, Bildeston Parish Council has plans for a new village sign, moneys for which have already been raised. For this issue, I have compiled suggestions of events and people from our past that may be suitable for depiction on the sign. Some nearby parishes have local heraldic symbols; some signs portray significant events while others include pictorial references to several aspects of their history. Whatever is finally selected for Bildeston, I hope that it does not include sheep. We do not live in a former ‘wool’ town as sheep and wool were not produced here: Bildeston was a place where cloth was formerly made on looms in the homes of its weavers. Monday February 10th 2020: In the 1980's there was a programme on the TV called 'All muck and magic', it was probably one of the earliest programmes to promote organic gardening, with an emphasis on healthy soil. Organic gardening nowadays has a much higher profile for very good reasons. So it was good to get advice from master composter David Golding (a change from our original speaker) at our meeting in February. David visits schools, community centres and garden groups across Suffolk on a voluntary basis promoting the value of making and using good organic compost, which adds fertility to the soil, improves soil structure and reduces the amount of waste going to land fill so reducing our carbon footprint. Fifty/fifty is the key to success - 50% green waste such as veg peelings, garden trimmings, grass cuttings and annual weeds and 50% brown waste such as card, boxes low grade paper and woody stems. The mixture needs aeration and heat to help the process of decomposition. The resulting compost can be used as potting compost or a mulch to improve the soil. David also gave some great advice on making leaf mould and the benefits of having a wormery ( see photo) to make a good liquid feed. Despite all the rain we have had this winter and storm Ciara arriving the day before our meeting the competition table was full of beautiful hellebores in all colours, shapes and sizes. Monday March 9th 2020: The March meeting is our AGM and the business of the evening is usually got through nice and quickly so we can enjoy a cuppa and a good natter afterwards. There is still a competition though - 'A small posy of spring flowers', as well as the plant and produce table and the raffle. There is no entrance fee for this special meeting, so it might be a good time to come and find out more about the club. Down to Earth ...with Dave With the very unpleasant windy weather we have been having in February not much has been possible outside, having to spend more time indoors has given me the opportunity to catch up on some reading. One of the books I was given at Christmas was an RHS book entitled 'Tales from the Toolshed', this is the history and use of fifty garden tools, not everyone's fun reading but I have always had an interest in old tools. One chapter is about hoes, this reminds me of the first hoe I acquired, when I left school back in the fifties my first job was on an arable farm, one of the jobs we were given was to manually thin out the sugar beet plants, this was a back breaking job using a hand hoe. As I did not have such a tool I was dispatched to the local blacksmith, a Jack Gibbs of Navestock I think, to have one specially made for me, it was a small square bladed tool with a swan neck and a wooden handle, what it cost or who paid for it I don't know. What I do know is that I still have this hoe and use it frequently on the allotment, not bad considering it must be well over sixty years old, like all of my tools it gets a regular clean, sharpen and oiling. Lots of people have a favourite tool that was their fathers or even their grandfathers, use them with respect and pride. I do think some of the old tools are the best, although stainless steel spades, forks and trowels cannot be beaten. With the strong winds we have had some damage was to be expected. On the allotment the home made net cover for the brassicas was virtually destroyed and will now have to be replaced, this was planned for this year anyway. Various lids and circles of netting were returned to their proper owners. The shed on the allotment is a metal one so did not suffer any damage. The one in the garden did not fare so well with the felt being ripped off the roof, another job for when the weather improves. The heavy winds act as mother nature's way of pruning and usually do not do much harm, just make sure that any tree ties are in place. If we do get a dry sunny day then the greenhouse can be given an airing, this will help to keep down grey mould, be sure to close up any ventilation in mid afternoon to conserve the heat of the sun before nightfall. As usual do not be in a hurry to plant out anything, we can still get a sharp frost and lose the lot. One exception are bare rooted plants like roses, these are OK provided that the ground is not frosted. We recently bought a special bare rooted rose called 'Just Joey' from Cants of Colchester, what an interesting place that is if you just want roses. That's all for this time Dave

Next steps for Hadleighâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new pool Work to build a new swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure will enter its next construction phase this Spring. Babergh District Council working with its partner Abbeycroft Leisure, is investing ÂŁ2.4m with ÂŁ200,000 of funds provided by Hadleigh Town Council and a Sports England grant (ÂŁ150k), to build a new swimming pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. The project to create new and modern swimming facilities in the heart of Hadleigh is well underway, now reaching its next exciting phase in construction. All existing facilities including the current pool have so far remained open and unaffected during most of the works to keep disruption to a minimum, however, to enable final preparations ahead of its demolition later this year, the current pool will close on Friday 20 March. The closure will allow the new pool to be connected to the plant room and a link corridor between the buildings to be constructed. Hadleigh Pool and Leisureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other spaces and activities, including the gym, group exercise classes and the community and social rooms will continue to remain open throughout the works, allowing customers to stay active. The works, being carried out by Rose Builders, include; New pool with five 25 metre lanes, Disabled access to the pool via easy access steps and handrail or via lift, Changing Places toilet and shower facility, Sauna, Spectator seating and Access through to the existing changing facilities, refurbished in 2010. The old pool will then be demolished towards the end of the project once the new building has been connected to the existing centre. By re-landscaping the former pool area into park land, the build will result in no net loss of open space, with the new pool expected to be complete in summer 2020. A design for the sunshade which will be located at the front of the new pool is also currently being created by local artist, Jo Chapman working with local community groups. Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cabinet member for communities, said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exciting to see the new pool at Hadleigh really start to take shape to provide new community leisure facilities in Babergh. This work takes a huge step in helping our residents of today remain healthy and active, as well as ensuring that future generations can enjoy our leisure facilities over coming years - taking an important step towards achieving the aims set out in our Leisure, Sport & Physical Activity Strategy. While we appreciate any closure can be challenging for residents, closing the pool is an essential step to be able to connect the changing rooms and plant to the new building, enabling us to deliver the new facilities Hadleigh needs â&#x20AC;&#x201C; much like the gym, it will be a little short term pain for hopefully, long term gain that benefits everybody.â&#x20AC;? Tracey Loynds, Development Director for Abbeycroft Leisure, said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The new pool at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure is coming along fantastically well, and we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait for our customers to be able to enjoy the new facilities. This is obviously a huge project for us and for the people of Hadleigh, which we hope will support the community to get more active. As exciting as this project is, we do understand that any closure can be a challenge for customers. So while we bring the new pool to life over the next few months, we have put a number of measures in place to keep disruption to a minimum. For example, anyone with a swimming membership will be able to use the Kingfisher Leisure Centre - subject to normal public swimming times - and can also upgrade their membership free of charge to access gym and fitness classes for three months. And from April to June, Swim School members are being offered an alternative dry-side programme at Hadleigh for a reduced monthly fee. Alternatively, they can choose to temporarily have their lessons at Kingfisher Leisure Centre as well as access any public swimming sessions free of charge during the closure.â&#x20AC;?From 20 March, customers can find their nearest pool at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Sudbury with a timetable available on Abbeycroft Leisureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website. News from Whatfield School Our brilliant school will be 160 years old on the 29th February 2020- leap year day! We will be celebrating with a Victorian School day, complete with Victorian lessons, food and punishments! The school was built by the church for the local community and its first teacher was Miss Payne. I wonder what she would think of some of the lessons we do in school today. Technology means that now when Oak class are studying Egypt they can look at the pyramids through Google Earth or in maths can play Mathletics across continents against different children. I wonder if Miss Payne would recognise the school grounds. We are often told that Whatfield CEVCP School has one of the best views of a school in Suffolk, and since we are on the same elevation as Wattisham airfield this could be true. We are certainly in awe of some of the lovely sunsets and sunrises we get. Pupils at breakfast club were treated to this beautiful sky last weekâ&#x20AC;Ś Whatfield pupils were certainly excited to have a visit from our local farmer, Oliver Pratt, and his tractor before half term. The tractor was brought it into school as part of an education initiative of Suffolk farmers, and our pupils were fascinated to hear about how it is used on the farm, as well as getting a chance to sit in the driving seat! It made us think of Spring, and we are currently planning the planting we need to do around school and on the allotment. Our minibus has been in constant use, as we have taken part in many festivals and tournaments, and pupils love being given the opportunity to ride in it. It makes getting out and about a great deal easier, and on some occasions we have been able to fit a team from both Whatfield and Bildeston in it. Older pupils attended the swimming gala and athletics in Hadleigh recently and next month our youngest pupils will be taking part in forest schools activities at Bildeston Primary school. Oak class were thrilled to be given the opportunity to meet Tim Peake at the Science museum in London recently. One of our pupils was the first to ask him a question, and we found out a lot about his adventures as an astronaut. He is a great ambassador for Science and we hope some of our pupils will follow in his footsteps! As part of the event we were given a pass to the Launchpad exhibition, where there were plenty of interactive science displays to try out. We also enjoyed the journey to London, which was partly on the minibus and partly by tube. This was all part of our exciting adventure. We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as ever, if you would like to have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome. A Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive competition was run by Deb Howlett in the simulator just before the talk, taken from a Abu Dhabi golf course, which proved to be popular with all, including one of our eldest ladies Lilian Osborne taking part, she had never used one of these before, so it was quite an experience – certainly looking like warmer and drier weather than we have currently here! Well done to winners Nearest the Pin Susan Swan and Karen Lewis and Longest Drive Corinne Jackson. Musarra Gray from the Alzheimer’s Society gave a very interesting and informative presentation which made for good talking points afterwards and focussed us all for raising funds for this worthy charity during the year. Earlier in the day a few of the ladies braved the elements properly outside the Simulator room, playing a 9-hole Blue Tee competition on the Gainsborough Course. Barbara Jones won with a marvellous 28 points, with Lesley Hitchcock coming second with 24 points.

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice extends outreach sessions in Hadleigh to meet demand Sudbury & District Citizens Advice is pleased to announce the Thursday monthly outreach at the Ansell Centre will be extended and delivered weekly, every Thursday from 5th March to cope with the demand for advice and information. The service will continue to be offered as a drop-in with three advice slots per morning available from 9.30, 10.30 and 11.30. Chief Officer Colleen Sweeney said ‘the Ansell Centre outreach has proved very successful. Many people have sought advice and been helped by this service. By extending the service and offering it more frequently we can continue to support the community in Hadleigh who may not be able to travel to the main office in Sudbury.’

Kersey Mill Newsletter During February, we have forged ahead with work to reinstate the three pairs of stones on the water-driven Hurst Frame. The bed stones have been levelled up and their bearings completed, along with the curbing and meal spouts. To assist with levelling, the stone bearers have been refined by splitting them horizontally. The new beech wood for re-cogging the crown wheels to the stones has been machined. Stone furniture is also Kersey Mill’s Hurst frame, being built, based on photographic evidence, photo taken in 1960 which indicates an octagonal wooden stone case and wooden horse, three new sets of stone furniture have also been required. On the parallel engine-driven cast iron Hurst Frame, the circular metal tuns will be refurbished and re-assembled. This means the date when Kersey Mill will be able to produce flour again is becoming ever closer! Restoring the stone furniture has been a time consuming process, however it is essential for the machinery to be operated correctly and, more importantly, safely. An article featured in a recent Suffolk Mills Group Newsletter describes how a local nineteenth century post mill at Bird’s Farm, Bildeston was completely destroyed by a fire in just 90 minutes as a result of machinery that overheated, caused by friction. Post mills are the earliest type of European windmill and constructed of timber. The whole body of the mill houses the machinery, which is mounted on a single vertical post around which it can be turned, to bring the sails into the wind. Unlike the mill at Kersey, there was no water source Restoration work, reinstating nearby and despite the parish having its own the stones fire brigade, no attempt was made to extinguish the blaze. It was reported the tenant of Birds Farm, who had been grinding beans all day, had left the site unattended some 45 minutes prior to the fire’s outbreak. Fortunately the brick built roundhouse was saved with the assistance of neighbours. The site in Bildeston is now occupied by Taylor Made Joinery and Manor Road.
