Porch Project goes from strength to strength! On the evening of Wednesday 24th January the Porch Project’s new premises in Hadleigh were officially declared open by The Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, Clare Countess of Euston. The Porch Project was set up in 2009 having identified a need for youth provision in Hadleigh. It has since extended into Great Cornard and now employs three full time youth workers. It aims to provide excellent quality youth work so that the young people of Hadleigh, Great Cornard and the surrounding parishes have the opportunity to achieve their full potential in life. The evening kicked off with a short speech by James Buckle, Chair of the Trustees, who thanked the many people who have helped the Porch Project over the years, particularly mentioning Babergh District Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner, Tim Passmore. After the official opening, kindly performed by Clare, Countess of Euston, Ben Day, Lead Youth Worker gave a short introduction to one of the current learning programmes, Venture. Venture has been a huge success in its pilot year, 30 young people took part in the programme, many of them had little experience in the outdoors and they showed great resilience and perseverance, learning a host of new skills and gaining in confidence and independence. They were all presented with a certificate by Clare, Countess of Euston. The Porch Project runs two evening Weekly drop in sessions in Hadleigh and one in Great Cornard. It also offers smaller group sessions focusing on: female members of the Project with the Inspirations programme; outdoor adventure skills with the Venture programme; preparation for employment with the Horizons Programme; homework; cookery, to promote healthy eating emotional health and social wellbeing; volunteering, IT skills and online safety. To continue providing services for young people we need more volunteers to support our paid team of 3 youth workers. How much time you give is up to you, once a week, once a month, whatever fits in with you. This is a great way to meet people and support your community. Sudbury Memory Walk Success Back on a very cold and windy day in October 2017, 253 community members of all ages and ability united against dementia to walk the Sudbury Memory Walk. The weather was kind, the rain held off, and while some were blown along the route the sun peeped through to keep spirits high. The huge crowd were treated to coffee and cake all along the route while raising funds for two groups that were at risk of closing due to funding cuts. The Decaf Project at the Bridge Sudbury and Ansell Memories Café, Hadleigh both received a cheque for £1978.08 each to support families to live well with dementia. Jerry community volunteer behind the project says, “I was delighted to see so many people had joined us to walk. We had 100 more than year one and we have now agreed this will become an annual event so look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday 6th October 2018” #thememorywalkman You are encouraged to save the date and join us again in 2018. Working to become dementia friendly communities. For more information on Decaf at the Bridge. https://www.thebridgeproject.co.uk/support/dementia-support/

My name is Suzy, my company Makeover My Home is a professional decluttering and organising service specialising in home restyling and home staging. 2018 is with us and Spring is on its’ way. It seems this time of year most of us plan to give the house a good ‘Spring Clean’. Problem is, the house needs decluttering before we tackle the cleaning. With hectic lives and little or no time to do jobs around the house, Spring comes and goes and we never found time to do what we’d planned. Clutter is so overwhelming and stressful. Just deciding what to keep and what to let go can be really tough on your own. My clients say “I wish I’d decluttered years ago” - they never regret doing it. Decluttering and organising your home gives a sense of freedom by letting go of all the unnecessary material things we have around us and I can help you achieve this. Maybe you’re moving or downsizing, and you don’t know what to keep or let go? Have you been left to sort a loved ones’ possessions or property after hospitalization or bereavement? I have a caring and sensitive approach and can help you through this difficult time. Home Staging can be carried out if you are selling your home - making it more appealing to a wider selection of buyers and potentially achieving a higher price and quicker sale. Maybe you’re fed up with your décor and would like your home restyled in an affordable way according to your budget? We now offer a decorating service which many of my clients have used – I have some clients’ before and after photos on my website, please take a look! Fully Insured, DBS checked and ICO Registered and a proud member of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers (APDO). I offer a free telephone consultation so please give me a call to discuss any help you may like or need on 07939 074090 or email me on suzy@makeovermyhome.co.uk Please visit my website at www.makeovermyhome.co.uk to see the various services on offer

Hadleigh Walkers March’s walk on Saturday 10th will be a pleasant 7.5 mile circular walk starting and finishing at Dedham. We will meet at 0930 in the main Dedham car park which is on the left hand side as you enter from the A12 about 100 yards after the Dedham bridge. Please note that a £2 parking fee will be required. Our route starts by Dedham Mill and follows the river towards Stratford St Mary then Rookery Farm, Monks Lane, Freeman’s Farm, Dedham, Judas Gap Weir, Flatford Mill and back to Dedham via the Stour Valley Path. This is a delightful walk with lots of rivers, woods and open country to enjoy. We should be back at the car park around 12.30 pm. If anyone is without transport we will do our best to help out but it is essential that you contact us at least a week before the walk to allow time to organise lifts. Those booking lifts will leave at 0900 from the usual place at St Mary’s School on Stonehouse Rd. Everyone is welcome, including very well behaved dogs (there are a number of fields of sheep to pass through). Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy and wet in some places at this time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Villagers voice opposition to Persimmon proposed housing development At an extraordinary meeting of Capel Parish Council on Monday 5th February councillors voted unanimously to oppose Persimmon Homes' new outline application to build 100 homes in several phases, on land East of Longfield Road. The vote was on the basis that the site is unsuitable for 100 homes. And that Little Tufts (cul-de-sac with 10 houses) is entirely unsuitable for construction traffic and for the only permanent access to the proposed housing development. Residents from around the village at the meeting voiced concern about the site and access to it. Due to Babergh DC Planning Committee changes in membership (including substitutes) the Parish Council look forward to a further site/surroundings visit by district councillors before their decision on the application. Council gift Gainsborough’s Chambers to Museum Babergh District Council will be gifting Gainsborough’s Chambers in Sudbury, purchased in 2014 for ÂŁ235,000, to the Gainsborough’s House Society, free of charge. At a meeting last week Babergh’s Cabinet voted to gift the building to the Society, which runs Gainsborough’s House, as part of the Society’s project Reviving an Artist’s Birthplace – A National Centre for Gainsborough. Council officers will now begin working to transfer the ownership of the property to the Society, to allow it to be fully incorporated into the project’s wider ÂŁ8.7 million investment in the regeneration of the centre of Sudbury. An economic impact assessment by Gainsborough’s House Society has predicted that the Reviving an Artist’s Birthplace project could provide 60 temporary full time equivalent (FTE) jobs, nine permanent FTE jobs and 20 indirect FTE jobs. This would be part of a wider economic impact, once the project is completed, of ÂŁ2.9 million gross value added (measuring the contribution to the local economy) per annum, a 72% increase on the museum’s 2015/16 impact, including an additional ÂŁ1.02 million predicted spend on goods and services in the local area. Gainborough’s Chambers, which previously housed a Labour Exchange, is on Weavers Lane in Sudbury and adjacent to Grade I listed Gainsborough’s House. It has been leased to the Gainsborough’s House Society by Babergh District Council since April 2014, at an annual rent of ÂŁ12,000. Cllr John Ward, Leader of Babergh District Council and chair of Babergh’s Cabinet, said: “We’ve always been very keen to support Gainsborough’s House and the fantastic work it does: that’s why we bought this property in 2014. Since then we’ve leased it to the Gainsborough’s House Society, but the time has now come for them to take over completely and I’m delighted that we’re able to gift the property to them. Their Reviving an Artist’s Birthplace project could have a huge impact on Sudbury, both cultural and economic, and we are proud to be a part of that.â€? Mark Bills, Director of Gainsborough’s House said: “It was only thanks to Babergh District Council’s purchase of the site adjacent to Gainsborough’s House that our vision to create a National Centre for Thomas Gainsborough even got off the starting blocks. So we are absolutely thrilled, as we take the final steps towards securing this ÂŁ8.7 million investment for Sudbury, that the council has decided to so generously gift us this land. “It really means a lot to us and also shows how much the council and the local community supports our vision to make a real difference to the town, its residents and businesses. It’s terrific news and brings our project another step closer to reality.â€? Reviving an Artist’s Birthplace – A National Centre for Thomas Gainsborough is an ÂŁ8.7 million project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund which has earmarked ÂŁ5.2 million towards the project. With thanks to widespread support, Gainsborough’s House Society has so far gained donations and pledges worth over ÂŁ8 million.

Interstellar Interloper Sun: 5th March Rise 06.34 Set 17.43, 15th March Rise 06.11 Set 18.00, 30th March Rise 06.36 Set 19.26. Moon: Full 2nd March, New 17th March. Planets: Mercury is an early evening object in Pisces, setting at 19.45 on the 15th and shinning at magnitude 0. This is a tough object to locate in twilight, though binoculars will show it easily. Venus lies very close to Mercury during this period and will shine at magnitude -3.8 making it easy to see with the naked eye. Jupiter is now rising at 23.20 and is a month from opposition. Saturn is an early morning object in Sagittarius. Oumuamua: This month I thought I'd talk about an object which was discovered back on 19th November last year. The object was initially believed to be a comet because its orbit appeared to be very large. The object didn't show any cometary activity though, no tail and no coma despite the object reaching perihelion (closest point to the Sun) back in early September at 0.2 AU's which is pretty close, and certainly close enough for ice to sublimate, nothing happened. The orbit was determined and something odd was instantly obvious; the eccentricity of the orbit was large - larger than anything seen before at a value of 1.89. Eccentricity of an orbit indicates where an object comes from and where it's going in space. Eccentricities of 0 are circular, one of 0.9 would be a long ellipse with the object taking thousands of years to traverse the Sun. If the value is 1, then the object will be on a parabolic trajectory and just held onto by the Sun, values of over 1 indicate the body is carrying too much potential energy to be captured by the Sun and thus will be kicked out of the Solar System and into interstellar space. We know of objects that have left our system, but until last October had never seen one come into ours from another system. Oumuamua is actually an asteroid that is a rather odd shape, some 235m x 35m x 35m in size and shaped like a cigar and deep red in colour. We know that it has been travelling through deep space for millions of years (possibly billions) and came from the direction of the Solar apex, a region in space near the constellation Lyra that our Sun is heading towards. Finally, its speed is vast. It has been travelling through space (and will continue to do so) at a constant velocity of 26km/s or 58,160 mph. At perihelion, it reached 87 km/s or a whopping 194,613 mph! By the end of this year it will already be at the orbital point of Saturn, some 9 AU away.

Matthew Gallo Independent Mortgage Adviser Have you considered where you and your family would stand financially with your cost of living and mortgage expenses, in the event of death, diagnosis of a critical illness, or being out of work due to accident or sickness resulting in loss of income? There are straightforward solutions to secure your own and your family’s financial well-being under such circumstances, so consider these: 1. Life Insurance. In the event of death, life insurance can match your mortgage liability, clear your mortgage debt and retain the family home - as well perhaps, as providing an additional sum to maintain the standard of living of your dependants. Generally speaking, with a high-profile insurance company, this can be accomplished for a modest monthly cost. 2. Critical Illness Cover. In addition to life insurance on death, you also need to think about how you would clear your mortgage debt and how to maintain your financial commitments, in the event that you were diagnosed with a critical illness. After diagnosis, advances in medical research and surgeons’ expertise, often see individuals surviving subsequent treatment or surgery involved, and indeed may make a 100% recovery, but a return to work may be out of the question - either for a period of recuperation, or sometimes at all. Recuperation needs to be stress-free, and financial stress can see a relapse into illness once more. Critical Illness Cover allows this calm recovery, by paying a tax-free lump sum, immediately on diagnosis of a specified illness, to clear debt and free monthly expenditure pressure. The least expensive premium, should not be the deciding factor with Critical Illness Cover – you can’t mess around with this type of cover, and independent advice should be sought. 3. Income Protection. You need to consider the issue of long-term ability to meet financial commitments should you fall ill, be involved in an accident, or become disabled. You may not be critically ill, thus not meriting a claim under a critical illness policy, but nonetheless be sufficiently unwell/injured to be unable to be at work, and this might be for a short or long-term period. This type of cover is designed to meet monthly expenditure and mortgage payments, by paying a pre-determined tax-free income for the duration of your illness. If you have employment related contractual ‘sick-pay’ benefits, clearly this is taken into consideration, and this private and personal cover should typically be structured to start when your company benefits stop. You may justifiably ask why you would need both Critical Illness Cover as well as Income Protection – they are not mutually exclusive types of cover. Critical Illness Cover, covers specified illnesses with a lump-sum claim on diagnosis – for instance cancer, heart disease or stroke. Income Protection, pays an income during a period of incapacity and inability to work due to illness or injury which may not be critical. My IT software and sourcing system, allows me to me to source and recommend the most appropriate insurers and products, based on your age, health, occupation and pastimes, to get you the cover you need. Police Dogs in training in Needham Market The former Mid Suffolk District Council offices in Needham Market have temporary occupants: Suffolk Police dogs in training. The offices in Needham Market, which Mid Suffolk District Council vacated in November last year, are now in use to train police dogs for Suffolk Police. Suffolk Police’s Dog Section trains general purpose dogs (German shepherds) as well as specialist dogs (spaniels and Labradors) in both outdoor and indoor environments. The former offices in Needham Market offer an ideal opportunity to train these dogs in an office environment in which the dogs can train in tracking down people, drugs, explosive training aids, cash, ammunition or firearms. On Monday 21 January the first three dogs – Ivan, Zuma and Woody – were taken to the former offices. PC Simon Hughes outside the Ivan, a German Shepherd, was Needham Market offices with Police tasked with tracking down PC dog Woody Tony Russell, located somewhere in the building, after which Zuma and Woody, both Springer Spaniels, were set to locate hidden drugs by PC Simon Hughes. Police dogs undergo a rigorous 13 week training programme when first learning their role, followed by regular training sessions until they retire. The training is an interim measure while the long-term future of the site is secured. As part of the training Suffolk Police could arrive at the offices at any time of day or night to allow the trainee dogs to get used to the unpredictable schedule of police work. Residents who see police vehicles attending the site at odd hours should not be alarmed as this is part of the training. The former offices in Needham Market are also protected by 24/7 security to ensure there is no misuse of the site. All equipment used in the training of the dogs is brought to the site by Suffolk Police, and removed again when the dogs leave. The use of the site is being provided to Suffolk Police by Mid Suffolk District Council at no cost, in the interests of making the best use of the public sector estate in the county for Suffolk residents. Cllr Nick Gowrley, Leader of Mid Suffolk District Council and Cabinet Member for Assets and Investment, said: “The former offices in Needham Market is a key site within the town, and we’re working hard to secure a future for the site that will help Needham grow and be the stronger for it. While we do so, we want to put the site to the best possible use. Welcoming PC Russell and his police dogs to the site not only helps Suffolk Police prepare their Dog Section for any emergency, it also makes sure the former officers are still being used for the people of Suffolk. “This is an interim measure, and we will be updating residents shortly on what comes next at the site.” Temporary Sergeant James Thomas of Suffolk Constabulary, said: “We are extremely grateful to the district council for allowing us to use this space for general and specialist training as it is of great benefit to the force and the dogs.”

News from Kersey School Squirrels (Reception) To finish our learning around the topic of Superheroes, Squirrels had a surprise superhero visit! We were very lucky to be joined by PCO Denise Ford who told us all about her job, showed us her uniform and we even got to explore her police car. Squirrels then enjoyed a superhero day where their parents joined us for the afternoon where together they made their own 'Supertato' stories and movies! This half term we will start learning about Chinese New Year before learning all about space. Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) Hedgehogs class have had a busy half term learning about toys. We learned about the first teddy, the history of dolls, and how toy vehicles have changed. In DT we designed made our own teddies, peg dolls and toy cars. On Tuesday 30th January we went to Hollytrees museum in Colchester where we dressed up as Victorian children. We then learned about life in a Victorian house and had the opportunity to play with some Victorian toys. We finished off our topic by creating a toy museum in our classroom and inviting our parents in to see what we have been learning about. Badgers (Years 3 and 4) We had great fun taking part in this year’s pancake races. We all tried our best and made it through the course in one piece! In Literacy we have been working hard on developing our journalist skills by writing our won newspaper. We pretended we were back in 1922 and we were in Egypt when Tutankhamen was discovered. We had great fun in finding out facts, as well as writing the articles. In PSHE we have been learning all about staying safe and watched Dexter the Duck, who taught us all about the dangers of electricity and how to stay safe. All of Badgers are very excited to be visiting The British Museum next term to develop their Egyptian knowledge even further. Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class are continuing their learning about 'Keeping Green'- they have invented their own rubbish bins and written a complex set of instructions on how to use them. The children are also busy making lots of different products from recycled materials, including picture frames, vases, elephants from milk bottles (it can be done!) and pencil/pen holders- these will be on sale in the next half term to raise money for the class. If you would like to know more about Kersey school or would like to arrange a visit please ring the office on 01473 823397, email: admin@kersey.suffolk.sch.uk or visit our website: www.kersey.suffolk.sch.uk

Did you see the unflattering photo Kenneth sent last month of the pig pulling "Mum" down the garden through the mud and rain? Mother was not impressed, mind you she nearly lost one of her boots while trudging across the field recently. Usually I accompany her but this time I decided to curl up in the volunteers’ caravan. Unfortunately I was shut in overnight but pretended I did it deliberately. A chap has to maintain his dignity. As top cat here I look out for fellow felines, in this case Dad, soon to be Mum and junior from her last litter. This trio arrived via a London bus, hence they have been named Blakey, Mildred and Olive! Obviously they will not be ready for some time but eventually we hope they will be homed together. The fundraising season starts this month with a Gift and Craft Sale, 11-2pm 10th March at Whatfield Village Hall, IP7 7QU. Lots of handmade items for Mothers Day and Easter plus quality bric a brac, books, CDs/DVDs etc. Next is a Bargain Book Sale, 11am on 24th March at Hintlesham & Chattisham Community Centre, IP8 3PS. Raffle and refreshments at both events. It’s getting late and I’m rather keen to see Kenneth squirming his way back into Mother's good books so that’s all from me, Ollie (the Black) Cat Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare, Reg.Charity No.1124029, Stoke Road, Leavenheath, CO6 4PP, tel: 01787 210888 www.sesaw.co.uk

New Plant Centre Full to Bursting! Building a plant centre that joins the shop has been on our ‘to do’ list since we rebuilt Hollow Trees farm shop some 11 years ago in 2007. Somehow it just never got to the top of the list. That was until last year when, at last the time was right. Having finally achieved the attention it deserved we now have a small, but perfectly formed plant centre and it’s full to bursting with lots of hardy plants that can go out into your garden right now. Next time you visit Hollow Trees Farm take a, look at what’s on offer. As the seasons progresses we will continue to keep the new plant centre stocked with our own home grown bedding, patio and herbaceous perennial plants. It’s going to be a great year so why not trust your local gardening experts to keep your gardens and patios looking magnificent. Kersey Mill Newsletter This month our works to the Hurst frame have continued. The Hurst frame being the supporting central structure which support the heavy massive mill stones. The Hurst Frame required total repair, the massive heavy timber frame requiring total renovation. We are starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel with repairs now only required to the last remaining 2 legs and 2 cross members. Progress is going well & we have now successfully completed repairing an end leg along with a further cross member with a scarf joint. Our enthusiastic Millwright Bill Griffiths was heard to comment that he had lost count of the number of Scarf joints that he had made since the restoration program of Kersey Mill started. A Scarf Joint is a method of joining two pieces of wood or metal together. Most of the joints used at Kersey Mill have been nibbed scarf joints, that is to say it has two flat planes meeting on an angle and terminating with a vertical edge allowing the two surfaces to lock. Adhesive is applied, and fixing bolts offer further support. This has enabled us to retain much of the original fabric. So many timbers have had damage to one end or another, by scarfing we have been able to retain as much of the original structure as possible We have also used another form of scarf that being a Keyed Nibbed Scarf, like the previously mention but the keyed nibbed is interlocking. Plans are to have the top started prior to the next major open day on April 22nd. April 22 10am – 4pm. Drive it Day when a lot of classic and vintage vehicles descend on Kersey Mill. A wonderful opportunity for classic and vintage vehicle owners to commence the season and come to Kersey Mill where you can admire and discuss with other owners the delights of yesterday’s vehicles. All public will be welcomed, so come and enjoy a lovely day out, admire the beautiful vehicles, tour the Mill, sample some delicious refreshments on offer. Entry for display vehicles is free. A very small entry fee for visitor parking. Visitors to Kersey Mill will have noticed the bright red phone box located near the Brick Barn and the Flower shop. This is housing a defibrillator that is available for public access.

Coffee Morning at Burstall Village Hall on Saturday March 17th from 10 am - 12 .30 To raise funds for Fresh Start New Beginnings Delicous home made cakes and fresh tea and coffee , served on beautiful vintage china. Do come along and join us and find out more about this vital Suffolk Charity. Fresh Start – new beginnings is a charity working across Suffolk and Norfolk, set up to help child victims of sexual abuse - and their families - recover from the associated trauma. We provide 1:1 therapy to the child victims as well as groups for children and their Carers. Fresh Start – new beginnings use a clinically evaluated treatment model which is proven to help children recover from the guilt, blame and shame many feel following sexual abuse. The children are offered a safe place to unravel their thoughts and fears with a worker who will not judge or be shocked by what they hear. The children are helped to process their abuse and teach them strategies to deal with the effects of the abuse. The Charity’s vision is ‘to ensure all children and young people who are the victims of sexual abuse have the opportunity to access help, advice guidance and therapeutic intervention to aid their recovery’. In Suffolk Fresh Start – new beginnings get some statutory funding (Health and Police) but this only covers half of the costs…. The Charity has so far received over 980 referrals and our service is free at the point of delivery. www.fsnb.org.uk

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Our last meeting Monday 12th February 2018: Our meeting for February was a trip to the Place For Plants in East Bergholt. On a day blessed with glorious sunshine we were guided on a private tour around the tranquil 20 acre garden by the charming Sara Eley who is the great grandaughter of the gardens' founder Charles Eley. At this time of year the main areas of interest are the masses of snowdrops that carpet the ground beneath the trees. Sara was very interesting, diving hither and thither, picking samples of rhe numerous and different snowdrops for us to examine closely. I lost count of the various colour combinations, some have green splodges, some gold spots, some single and some some double. Less abundant were some very similar looking spring snowflake, a slightly bigger and taller flower. Also among the trees many hellebores have recently been planted, each one with its own idividual number for ease of identification. The picked flowers did not go to waste as they were used for table decorations in the cafe. Our next get together on Monday 12th March 2018: Our next meeting is on Monday March 12th in the dining room of the town hall (opposite The Ram). This is a very important meeting as it is the AGM. With Andy Leeder, the present chairman, moving out of the area and only four people left on the committee we desperately need some new blood to help keep the club going. It would be a shame if the club had to fold, this being our 50th anniversary year. The meeting will start at 7.30pm and will be followed by refreshments. We look forward to seeing you there.

But at the February meeting of Hadleigh Flower Club we enjoyed a very warm and entertaining meeting starring our very own Julia and Sallie. These Chelsea Gold medal winners regaled us all with tales of their adventures with flowers. Both had worked for big London Florists Constance Spry and Jane Packer. Their work included arranging the flowers at Buckingham Palace and The Royal Opera House. Next month at the United Reform Church on March 13th, we have Timothy Green demonstrating and his title is “Wedding Bells. A warm welcomes all. The meeting starts at 7:30pm.

Down to Earth ...with Dave February is a very quiet time in the garden and on the allotment, with not much to do other than a bit of tidying up and perhaps some compost spreading. Now is a good time to put a generous layer of mulch on the flower beds etc. This will keep the moisture in and keep the weeds down, be careful not to swamp any small plants, hellebores and emerging bulbs. Something I have thought for many years is backed up by a survey carried out last year in conjunction with the Natural History Museum. This led to the discovery that soils fed with organic materials such as farmyard manure and home made compost contained 50% more earthworms than soils where no organic matter had been added. Where artificial fertilisers had been used instead of organic matter there was no increase in earthworm numbers, earthworms are vital in improving the soil structure. As well as homemade compost and well rotted farmyard manure, spent mushroom compost and composted bark are great soil improvers. It does not have to be dug in, placed on top of the soil the worms will do all the work and soon integrate it. Just as soon as the soil dries out a bit the onion sets in their small idividual pots will be planted out on the allotment. The space in the greenhouse is needed for the sweet peas. This year for a change we are going to try growing them from seed, we have in the past bought rather overcrowded pots full of small plants. The seed order has arrived from Kings seeds and I am keen to get them started, the same method as used for the first early garden peas will be used. Two seeds in a small but deep plastic pot filled with special seed sowing compost and a little bottom heat just to get them started. By using seed we have more choice of colour, we shall see if it works. The three rows of daffodils planted on the allotment just for picking have developed a few blank spaces, not surprising after the years that they have been there. The answer is to mark the gaps during the flowering season with bamboo canes and then late in the year fill in the spaces with some new bulbs, there is nothing worse than sticking a trowel into a planted bulb. The fresh bulbs will be planted quite deeply, at least three times the size of the bulb. No doubt a sack of mixed daffs will be on offer at a garden centre somewhere. Finally I must compliment the Hadleigh litter picking team. Since they have been operating there has been a noticeable decrease in the amount of litter everywhere. Thank you and good luck to them all. That's all for this time, Dave

East Anglian Garden Group This year we celebrate fifty wonderful years of the EAGG. We continue to have an exciting program of speakers and visits for our members to enjoy for 2018. In February we had a most informative talk from Julian Ives, from Dragonfli, on the use of natural pest control. As so many chemicals are now limited for garden use, it is more important to learn about the use of natural predators for our garden pests. We should make sure that we plant pollen bearing plants, including wild flowers, to encourage beneficial insects, which will predate upon aphids. He explained the use of Moth pheremone traps, the best places to put them, and showed some very graphic film of nematodes devouring vine weevil grubs! We learnt a huge amount about the use of Nematodes, and Parasitic Wasps, for pest control in the greenhouse. A fascinating talk, and there is much more detailed information on his Dragonfli website. We are looking forward to Cleve West on the 17th February, now sold out, and our visit to the snowdrops at Chippenham Park Gardens at the end of the month. Our new venue is Chamberlin Hall, in Bildeston, and all future meetings will be held there. On March 3rd, we will be welcoming Steve Edney, from the Salutation Garden, with his talk The Delights of Dahlias, and on April 7th, Harriet Rycroft will be giving us her talk on ‘Summer Splendour, Planting Exciting Container Displays’. Membership is open, and prospective members can find out more by looking at our website, and by contacting our secretary, Matt Long on 01449 741551. Eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Women's World Day of Prayer The women of Suriname, former colony of Dutch Guiana, sandwiched between British and French Guiana, have written this year's service for the Women's World Day of Prayer. It is the smallest Country in South America (population in 2016 just over half a million), with a turbulent history - colonised by the British, taken by the Dutch, retaken by Britain but finally returned to the Netherlands, it gained its independence in 1975, when some 40% of the population emigrated to the Netherlands. It is rich in Bauxite and great swathes of forests. The women's theme is "All God's creation is very good". The problem is with mankind, which fails to be careful stewards of its richness, seeks only to exploit the natural resources and is careless of the pollution it leaves in its wake. Allowing mining to go unchecked can have grave results (close at home, look at the disaster of Aberfan), cutting down forest cover on hill slopes leads to soil erosion and the kind of mudslides seen recently in California. The women of Suriname are urging us to be aware of our impact on the world, to avoid pollution, to reuse, and recycle. Each of us in our own small way can help. The service will be held, as ever, on the first Friday in March. This year we are hosted by Suffolk Road Church in Sudbury, and there is a welcome to all, men as well as women, in their church on the corner of Suffolk Road and Girling Street at 3 p.m. on Friday 2nd March. Do come!

Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 26 (Spring 2018) John Gardiner of Stowmarket returns to recall his memories of Still’s Stores during the 1950’s, which was owned and run by his grandparents John and Mary Pool. He describes the layout of the shop when personal service was still the norm and how customers in neighbouring villages were served with deliveries made by horse and cart. At the beginning of the 19th century, London solicitor Richard Wilson, sometime MP for Ipswich, took up residence in Bildeston and created for himself and his family a walled-in estate, a horse-breeding stud and a landscape park, all of which are still traceable in the village today. He demolished several properties and purchased others in order to give himself privacy by erected brick walls on his boundaries. ‘When half of Bildeston was up for sale’ looks at what happened to this real estate when the Wilson estate was broken up in the late 1830’s Over the centuries, eight named public houses have been identified in Bildeston. Beginning life as a very prestigious-looking timber framed building, ‘Three shops and a public house in Market Place’ follows the story of one of them through its ownership and occupancy and explains why the building is now hiding behind a brick front. From 1750 to 1850, people with property became increasingly concerned about protecting themselves from the expenses of apprehension and prosecution of criminals who had stolen their livestock or goods. This was a time before professional county police forces were established and when prosecutions in court were the responsibility of victims. In ‘Bildeston Associations for the Prosecution of Felons’ explains how groups of people formed together in order to create insurance against such costs and how localnewspaper reports and advertisements help to tell their stories and identify members when the associations’ records themselves have not survived. Your letters, pictures and memories concerning Bildeston in the recent past and articles relevant to the history of the village and its surrounding countryside are most welcome. Hadleigh Choral Society goes to Snape It’s a cold, dark January evening but the Ansell Centre is buzzing with music and light as the eighty strong choir sing for the 15th time...‘and ye of the past… must…DIE!’ We’re rehearsing Edward Elgar’s The Music Makers and the timing is tricky to say the least, but we are determined to get it right! We are Hadleigh Choral Society and we are swapping our usual concert venue of St Mary’s Church for the illustrious surroundings of Snape Maltings Concert Hall on March 24th 2018 at 7.30pm. Rehearsals for the Big Concert are well underway and we‘re all so excited about singing two amazing Elgar works, The Music Makers and Spirit of England. The Music Makers is Elgar’s setting of an Ode by Arthur O’Shaughnessy, celebrating the influence of the creators of art and music on the shaping of the future. Elgar writes some wonderful melodic passages in this piece, but at other times the choir is expected to produce fire and passion in their singing. Spirit of England is based on the war poetry of Laurence Binyon, and is particularly poignant in this centenary year of the ending of WW1. It contains the lines made famous by repeated recitations at remembrance services, ‘they shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old...we will remember them’. Hadleigh Choral Society will be joined by the Kelvedon Singers and the Colchester Symphony Orchestra for this concert, all under the baton of our Musical Director, Christopher Phelps. We are also looking forward to welcoming back the well-known and much respected Piano Soloist, John Lill. John and the Choir have a long history of collaboration and it is a delight to have him playing with us once again. John will play Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor, (Op. 18). Tickets are selling well and are available from Choir members, the Snape Box Office (01728 687 110) and website. Prices are £22, £18, £15. An audience coach will leave Hadleigh at 4.30pm, arriving at Snape in time to have refreshments before the concert. The return coach will leave Snape at about 10.15pm. The cost of the coach is £6.50, phone Gill Riddle on 01473 670140 to book your place. Alternatively, email Liz Turnbull at re.turnbull@btinternet.com for any additional information you require. We would love to see you at our concert, our aim is to provide you with an exciting, uplifting performance and, of course, to be note perfect!

Making the Glove Compartment the Phone Compartment It’s nearly a year since the Government introduced tougher penalties for motorists using their mobile phone behind the wheel – but has the deterrent had any impact? More than 400 drivers were fined or prosecuted for the offence in Suffolk between April and October last year, with the county’s police admitting the figure is a “drop in the ocean” compared to the likely thousands of incidents gone unseen by officers. In March, the Government doubled the penalty from three points to six and increased the fine to £200. Statistics prove that drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a crash while using their phone. Police say using a mobile behind the wheel is one of the ‘fatal four’ traffic offences, along with drink/drug-driving, speeding, and failing to wear a seatbelt. However, judging from the volume of offending in Suffolk, there is still confusion in some quarters as to what the rules stipulate. What does the law say? It is only legal to use a phone behind the wheel if you are safely parked with the engine off – this does not include waiting in traffic or at traffic lights. If your engine is running, your phone should be nowhere near your hands. In the words of The Department for Transport’s ‘Think’ campaign; ‘make the glove compartment the phone compartment’. You are allowed to use a phone if it is entirely hands-free – however, any hands-free devices should be fully set up before you drive, so you can take calls without handling the device. The rules also prohibit the use of hand-held telephones by passengers who are supervising a provisional driver. Using other powers, the police can still prosecute if you’re not in proper control of a vehicle. This could include holding your phone, or plugging it into a charger, for instance. What about using a phone as a sat-nav? It is illegal to hold a mobile to follow a map – if you wish to use smartphone navigation or mapping app, fix the phone to the windscreen or dashboard (making sure that it does not obscure your view), so you can see it without needing to hold it. The law includes an exception for genuine emergencies: you are allowed to make 999 or 112 calls on a hand-held device while driving but only if it’s not otherwise safe to stop. Remember, using a hand held mobile phone while driving carries six penalty points and if you are a new driver, that is enough to put you off the road. How can Gotelee’s criminal law lawyers help you? If you are under investigation or have been charged with an offence, we can assess your situation and advise you on the best way forward. Our lawyers, based in Hadleigh, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Melton, will explain your options in a clear and understandable way. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre What a great start to the Spring term we had! Nine new riders joined us and I was able to help in their assessments. The picture shows Dario, one of our new Monday riders, having his assessment with Fiona. Welcome to all our new riders and good luck with your therapy. Thanks to the MCF grant (did we mention that before?) my hoist has been re-vamped and this has enabled more riders to mount me. I am so pleased. Obviously my little friend Babs still has plenty of work, but she’s not as smart as I am; I’m much more like a real horse than she is. The maintenance team is crying out for another member to help with field grass cutting on a regular basis. You don’t have to use a scythe, we have moved on, but we still need manpower to keep things healthy for the live herd. Lent will be in full swing when you read this, do you give up, or give, to prepare for Easter? Last year one group of helpers did their fund raising around an Easter Egg raffle. Look at the size of the big prize, won by one of our families! We shall be shut during the school holidays so here’s wishing you a happy break and safe journeys, roll on the summer! French’s Care Haven & Care Farm Urgent Appeal for Land to Rent Our Charity is in need of extra land with a barn and some outbuildings. If you or anyone you know has down sized on their farm or has a parcel of land they would like to see put to good use by a registered charity and care farm, then please get in touch with me. I would be very grateful if those in the know could pass this appeal around. In April we have Hadleigh Young Farmers coming along for a visit, they will be given a talk by me about the farm and what we do to help animals and the people that come to us, the young farmers will also get the chance to meet our animals. French’s had a sad parting in February, one of our old residents Indi was put to sleep, she was one of life’s fighters and had been bright with a good appetite up until the sad day. Indi’s down days health wise were becoming more frequent and this did worsen weight wise in the last few weeks of her life. Indi came to us with a vice that a lot of race horses have, a vice which is brought on through stress and can be triggered by being shut in a stable for hours on end with no natural turnout to grass. Indi wind sucked-crib biting as they call it, this is when a horse grasps a solid object such as wood with its teeth then arches its neck muscles and contracts the lower neck muscles to retract the larynx. This coincides with an in-rush of air into the oesophagus producing the characteristic cribbing grunt. This is a compulsive behaviour and is a coping mechanism to stress. It becomes a habit that sadly cannot be broken once a horse has this and because of the constant drawing of air it can become gassy in the stomach. When this occurs on a daily basis it can turn into bouts of colic, or can leave them very uncomfortable until they pass all the wind that has accumulated, these problems can become a regular occurrence. The vets do say that over years this does cause internal damage and for Indi this had become the case, it had become impossible for her to absorb any goodness from her feed and keep weight on, even though she was given adlib hay and short feeds throughout the day. Feeding adlib so the stomach has regular food in is the key to keeping real bouts of colic away and is actually the best way to help this type of horse. Many of our horses and ponies are old and have various health problems, one has an allergy/breathing problem which is kept under control with medication and the medication does need to be adjusted when the pollen is high. Another has few teeth so he has buckets of specialist feed given to him hourly to keep his weight on, we have another who has tumours, she is a grey horse and this is a weakness that can come, particularly with greys. Another has laminitis so in the summer months when sugars in the grass are high, she has to be carefully managed with her grazing and time in the paddocks, as a simple way of saying it, her feet can get very tender, so she can look doggery when she walks, but for the other 9-10 months of the year she is like a pocket rocket and gallops around everywhere like a spring chicken. Just like people when animals get older they have similar problems i.e digestive and stomach, teeth missing, breathing problems and arthritis. We all manage to still have a quality of life and carry on and with good care and management from us at French’s and other charities that work with rescued animals, these animals can still enjoy their life and be happy in themselves the same as we can, even though we have health struggles and issues. It should be understood by the general public that when you have a horse and animal rescue centre most of the horses - animals come to you because they have problems, either health wise or behavioural wise, as this is generally the reason why no one wants them. Each animal at a charity like ours has its own medication routine and management system put in place and if the animal has an ongoing condition it will and inevitably does deteriorate over time, exactly the same as it does with us humans. With the animals at French’s that have these ongoing health problems, veterinary advice and constant monitoring and care is given throughout the rest of their lives with us. Rest in peace to both Jack and Indi pictured, they were both beautiful loving individuals and much loved by all of us. Recently, in our village, we have just had another bout of no internet. It seems that when it is good, it is very good, but when it goes it can be hard work to get it sorted out. Each time this happens I find it surprises me just how annoying, disrupting and frustrating it is. But I am of the generation where we were, perhaps the last children, to grow up before the internet, (yes, to any younger readers – there was a, before!), or at least before the World Wide Web became a recognised and widely used thing (somewhere in the mid to late ‘90’s). And yet, it has become such an everyday use and for so much, that I genuinely found pause for thought. Why should it be that bad? I lived a fair few years of my life without its existence and survived. But the world has changed and the way we interact, work, communicate and learn has evolved with time. I needed to send some copy to a publisher and ended up having to re-type it all on my phone (which takes a long time stabbing out full paragraphs on a tiny touch screen) to send via my mobile data. Then there were things I quickly wanted to look up or double check for research purposes, the normal recourse for which these days is, of course, online. Realising that most of my plans for that day were scuppered I decided to change tack and focus on other things. And it was rather lovely, for a short while, to just pretend the online word didn’t exist and settle into other jobs for which a router was not a pre-requisite. That was all very well and good for a day, but you can’t ignore the things that need to be done forever. There is talk now that having good access to the internet is a basic human right, and as odd as that may first appear, it has become such an essential tool that the notion is not that far-fetched. Whilst there are things I still believe are best offline: friendships and relationships, talking face to face, being able to hug someone hello, shopping at your local shop and speaking to a real person at the till; to name a few, access to the internet is important now. Many of us can use our smartphones for essential things if the internet has disappeared for a while but there are other options too – including checking with your local library to see what internet access they can provide. These days, libraries offer many services and there are friendly people there to help; perhaps the best of both worlds, online access surrounded by offline people and amenities. www.jenny-may.com

BUMPER DAMAGED IN A CAR PARK?

by Sarah Thompson

Scuffs and Scrapes

I wonder what it is about chocolate that makes it so irresistible. As I write this, I am mindful that we are fast approaching Fairtrade fortnight (26th February – 11th March) and I would urge you to make these truffles using chocolate with the Fairtrade symbol on. That way, you can enjoy delicious treats, or make them for someone special instead of an Easter Egg, knowing the workers who provided the source for the main ingredient are getting a fair wage for their labour. I might even make some for my mum who will be 92 on the first day of Spring! Easy Chocolate Truffles Ingredients: 200 g dark chocolate, preferably FairTrade, broken into pieces. 85ml double cream, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or ½ split vanilla pod) Cocoa and/or grated white chocolate for dusting. Method 1. Put the chocolate, cream and vanilla in a pan and heat very gently until melted. Cool, then chill for 90 mins until firm. 2. Use a melon baller or teaspoon to make 24 truffles, then dust with cocoa or grated white chocolate. Chill until ready to eat. You can make these 4 days ahead and they will freeze for 1 month. Thaw in a cool place and dust with more cocoa if needed.

Fleece Jazz 25th Anniversary For 25 years, Fleece Jazz has been presenting the best in UK, European and world modern jazz weekly. The stars that have illuminated our stage are too numerous to relate, but they range from international stars such as Jamie Cullum, Clare Teal and Stan Tracey to many brilliant young musicians, the stars of the future. To celebrate our anniversary, and the 1200 gigs we have loved, we are presenting a Sunday afternoon of top UK jazz, at our home, Stoke by Nayland Hotel. We start off at 2pm with singer Georgia Mancio, of whom The Observer said “(Mancio) has everything covered – technical mastery, expressive range and a remarkable versatility – FOUR STARS”. She is joined by guitarist Chris Allard, noted by Jazzwise for delivering “Fullblooded solos...right on the money”, and Jamie Cullum believes that Chris is “One of the great guitarists in this country”. Then at 3:30pm until about 6pm The Alec Dankworth All Star Quintet will delight us with two sets of music. This band is at the top of the jazz tree. Bassist Alec Dankworth who will lead the quintet, is famed for “elegant stability, big sound, sure beat, and thoughtful spontaneity” (John Fordham). Two starry and contrasting saxophonists, Alan Barnes and Dave O’Higgins form the front line. Joining Alec in the great rhythm are pianist Dave Newton and drummer Clark Tracey. Here are some endorsements of this amazing lineup: Alan’s “stylistic range is quite phenomenal, from Dixieland to post-bop”. (Dave Gelly); Dave O’Higgins “plays with quite exceptional fluency and his fund of ideas never runs out.” (The Observer); “There is a sophistication about Dave [Newton]’s playing that runs deep, whether ballads, swingers or flag wavers, it's all there. This was great jazz and the audience let him know it.” (Bernard McAlinden, Crescendo Magazine); Clark Tracey is the best - Best Drummer in the British Jazz Awards 2016 & 2017. The gig will be held at the beautiful Stoke by Nayland Hotel Keepers Lane, Leavenheath, Colchester, CO6 4PZ. Parking is easy, and the hotel is completely accessible. Refreshments will be available. Tickets are £25, and are available by phoning 01787 21185, at We Got Tickets (http://www.wegottickets.com/fleecejazz) and at the door.

Ipswich Town fan scores hat-trick at Portman Road and wins a brand new front door SEH BAC, the award-winning home improvement firm, recently gave three lucky football fans the opportunity to win a brand new front door during Ipswich Town’s Championship tie with Leeds United. The contestants were invited onto the Portman Road pitch at half-time and each had three attempts to kick a ball through a specially made front door. Matt Lomax kept his cool to become the only person to score on all three attempts and was named the ‘Score Through The Door’ competition winner. “My partner and I were talking about getting a new door, and when I saw the Score Through The Door competition advertised on social media, I thought it was definitely worth a shot,” explains Matt. “I’m delighted to win and look forward to having my new door installed later in the year. I also got to walk out onto the pitch and Ipswich won – so it was great day all-round.” John Savage, Managing Director of SEH BAC, comments: “Firstly, massive congratulations to Matt and well done to all our contenders for taking part. Not only did the three chaps have to score through the door, but they had to do it with over 18,000 people watching which is no small feat!” “It was great to see Score Through The Door prove so popular with hundreds of Ipswich Town fans entering the competition. It was a fantastic way to mark our over 20year relationship with Ipswich Town FC as a long-term sponsor and firm supporter. We hope this will be the first of many Score Through The Door competitions and other events with the team, as we look to reward our customers, staff and the dedicated ITFC fans.” Based in Ipswich and operating across East Anglia, the South East and the Home Counties, SEH BAC is part of Suffolk-based One Group Construction, a multi-million-pound group of companies which complete major infrastructure and construction projects across the UK. The company was recently named G-17 Installer of the Year, the glazing industry’s most prestigious awards. The firm beat 13,000 double glazing companies from across the country to win the coveted honour – impressing the respected panel of judges with their commitment to quality craftsmanship, excellent customer service and safety. For more information, call 0808 159 6310 or visit www.sehbac.com.

Hadleigh Art Club Activities The Art Club, which meets every Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the library Seminar Room, have a full programme of events for the month of March. We start with a probable visit to sketch in the church. Probable because it does depend upon the church being unused on that day. That will be on the 6th of the month, the following week, the 13th of March, the subject is people; their distant shapes, coming towards you and going away. Their clothes, colours and textures. Now we are approaching Easter, so the meeting on the 20th considers both the religious theme and the commercial; Easter bunnies/chicks and eggs. On the 27th ; Teatime! Tea cups and cakes or jug of fruity juice and perhaps a plate of biscuits. Which brings us to the fact that we are always pleased to meet new members and a reminder that about halfway through the afternoon we stop for tea and biscuits.

Chernobyl Childrens Life Line & Charity Shop March 24th is our Easter Chocolate Bingo. Do remember that this was sold out in 2017 so get your tickets early!. Not your normal Bingo! Using a big screen all Bingo numbers are called by "celebrity voices" such as Michael Cane, Victor Meldrew, Ozzie Osborne and others. Prizes are given for one line, two lines and a full house and everything is Chocolate related. That doesn’t mean to say it is all eating chocolate, we have many prizes that are “chocolate” themed but not necessarily edible. There are 6 games played, cards for games 1 to 5 are £1 each and for game 6 they are £3 each as the full house prize is £100 cash!. During the interval a hot meal is provided followed by scrummy deserts. There will also be a free competition with a prize for the winners. We have a magnificent raffle with over 30 prizes - all Easter & Chocolate themed. If you want a really good family night out, where children are welcome, a full bar is available and you get fed as well, all for only £6.00 entry fee (half price for under 10’s) Tickets are now available from the Charity Shop Coddenham Rd Needham Market, The Stowmarket Tourist Office or call 01449 760343 or 07974 424374 . Can you help us to help our children? As many of you may know the children arrive with only the clothes they are wearing. We are busy collecting “nearly new” items which we give to the children on arrival. They take clothes not only for themselves but also for siblings at home. If you have any children’s clothing, and in particular suitable for ages 6 to 13 that you would like to donate we would be extremely grateful. We are now collecting clothing for all ages as any surplus to requirements for the summer group will be taken to Belarus on our Group Trip at the end of August where a group of Volunteer from our area will be visiting several different “Social Shelters” (Cross between Orphanage and Foster Home) and will take clothing for the children there. Donations can be left at the Charity Shop or collected by calling the numbers as given above. If you are interested in finding out more about the Charity in general, or maybe you would like to help in our Charity Shop then please do get in touch. Thank you to everyone for your support as always. Elizabeth Parker, Link Chair 01449 760343 enquiries@ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk. www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk https://www.facebook.com/ccllmidsuffolk/

Stoke-by-Nayland WEA Stoke-by-Nayland WEA is holding its AGM on Thursday 12th April 2018 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm. This will be followed by a presentation entitled ‘In Pursuit of the Trivial’ by Local Author Mark Mason. Mark writes: Before becoming a writer I did jobs as varied as selling Christmas cards in Harrods, playing guitar in a blues band that toured Europe and making radio programmes for the BBC. Wherever I went, though, I found it was always the trivia that excited me most. The intriguing stuff, the little facts that slip down the back of life's sofa. So I've ended up as the sort of guy who knows that Harrods dropped their apostrophe in 1921 (Sainsbury's still haven't), that Istanbul is the only city in the world to straddle two continents and that The Archers’ theme tune was produced by a young George Martin. It's an attitude that keeps life interesting, I find, whatever you're up to at any particular point in time, whether you're living in the West End of London (as I used to), or a village in Suffolk (as I do now). All past, present and future members welcome to this FREE lecture and complimentary coffee For further details please contact Sue Whiteley on 01787 210945 or email - whiteleysa@hotmail.co.uk

A chant of “Who Let the Dogs Out – Woof, Woof” went up as Newton Green’s new ladies’ captain sent her drive-in tee shot 133 yards down the first fairway. Lizzie Johnson has a pet Flat Coated Retriever she walks when not striding the fairways of her golf club. In a morning themed round Pets Are Us, many of her fellow members wore animal costumes, and vice-captain Cate Fraser appeared as cartoon character Deputy Dog. In very cold and bitter weather, 50 ladies showed dogged determination as they set out on a 10-hole Delaney scramble competition, which had been preceded by Lizzie witnessing retiring captain Rebecca Evans putting out on the 18th green to complete her season. Competition winners: 35 Gwyneth Ferriera, Sue Thurgate, Carol Durston and Elizabeth Underwood, 35.5 Pam Guilbert, Sally Cade, Jill Symon and Maggie Manby.

Hadleigh Cycling Club Plans In 2018 The Club’s 2018 programme is coming together. The Junior Club will start in April, a little later than in previous years. We are looking to put on Get Back on Your Bike sessions again for Ladies on Wednesday evenings in June. Julian Cecil has offered to run short rides for those who don’t possess lycra or a road bike and just want to try social riding. Our usual Club rides will run on Sunday mornings from the George and once the weather improves, Monday evening rides from the High School. The Gayford Flyer will take place on Sunday, 2nd September. At last year’s Gayford Flyer we supported Paul Spraggons who will be riding the Grand Depart Classic on 23rd June for Prostate Cancer UK. To date, he has had donations of nearly £9000 and has done in a fantastic job in raising awareness. Please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tourdespraggs and support the cause. There was a terrific turn out for Hadleigh CC’s annual subs night at The George with many existing members signing up and we have been joined by 10 new members - Ian Culham, Michael Fraser, Andy Allen, Lee Abbott, Martin Bundy, Tim Collins, Reg Pennell, Michael Carter, Tim Allcorn and Michael Lynch. Riders are invited to gentle social rides starting at 9am from The George on Sundays, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. Visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

Stoke by Nayland Ladies Stoke by Nayland Ladies played a 9 hole Stableford on the Gainsborough course on Thursday 15th Feb, it was a beautiful day with only two temporary greens which was due to them being very wet from Wednesday evenings down pour. The ladies had a choice of Blue or Yellow tees, with almost equal number of ladies playing off each tee. After the match the Ladies were invited to a Charity Social, Lady Captain Elaine Davidson had asked that the Ladies brought items that were non perishable, these were then taken to the Sudbury Food Bank, she was overwhelmed by the response with lots of the ladies bringing in several items. The overall winner of the days competition was Betty Cox with 21pts! Silver Division 1st Jane Golding 21pts; 2nd Anne Hemmings 19pts; 3rd. Mandy Byham 18pts. Bronze Division 1st Betty Cox 21pts; 2nd Maryan Griffiths 19pts; 3rd Maureen Adams 17pts. Copper Division 1st Caroline Lowe 15pts. Sue Latham was the England Golf Medal winner for 2017 for Stoke by Nayland. She will now go on in May to enter the Bridgestone Chase your Dream Trophy to qualify for the Regional Finals. The top 10 players will go forward to play in the National Finals.
