Hadleigh Show 21st May at Holbecks Park The show is almost here and we are in the very final mapping stages of getting back after a long 2 years. Tradestands and food exhibitors are exceeding 200, entries in all classes stand at just over 600 across the showground. Record numbers of sheep entered will mean there is plenty to witness in the sheep rings and with plenty of cattle, donkeys and horses also entered, the rings will be buzzing across the showground. Showground preparation is well under way with the first grass cut being taken this week and the work will continue to iron out any lumps and bumps. The “superhighway” is tidy, clear and ready for the traffic so we are almost good to go. Across the showground we have so much to entertain starting with our lovely friends at Stocks Fair opening on Friday night from 6pm-11pm, for show visitors all day and evening on Saturday and from 12pm-5pm on Sunday. Alongside them we have our education area, a countryside ring with machinery old and new, the Sheep Show and Dog and “Not” Duck Show, moving up through the shopping and tradestands towards Rural Crafts, Horticulture and Floral Art. The Cookery Theatre has displays throughout the day, plus the Art Show, Grand Ring, Presidents Ring, Food Hall and together with livestock and equine we should have something for everyone. Tickets are in ADVANCE ONLY, please purchase online via www.hadleighshow.co.uk or via our amazing local outlets:- Keith Avis, Hadleigh; Boxford Post Office; Hollow Trees Farm Shop, Semer; Bates Wells & Braithwaite, Sudbury; Hall Farm Shop, Stratford-St-Mary; Hintlesham Barns; Elmsett Post Office & Stores; Park Street Stores, Stoke by Nayland, Somersham Community Shop and Bildeston Post Office We are so looking forward to welcoming you back to Hadleigh Show, fingers crossed for sunshine and smiles all day

Since the 6th April 2022, separating married couples have been able to divorce without one party having to allege fault. The timescales for divorcing a spouse and the ability for one spouse to obstruct a divorce have also changed. Previously, for a couple to divorce, one person was required to accept responsibility for the relationship breaking down. Or, if neither person was willing to accept responsibility, they must have been separated for a period of two years (where both individuals agree to the divorce) or five years (where one spouse does not agree to the divorce). Other than in the event of extended separation, this means one party accepting that they have committed adultery, behaved unreasonably, or have disserted the other. For many years campaigners have demanded changes to divorce law, recognising that many couples simply drift apart; that no one party is to blame for the relationship breaking down, or that both spouses mutually and amicably want to separate. Since April 2022, divorcing couples are now not required to apportion blame or wait a period of two or five years of separation to pass to be able to commence divorce proceedings. Under the changes, couples will now be able to apply for a divorce simply because their marriage has broken down, paving the way for a mutually agreed and amicable divorce process. In situations where the divorce is not amicable or mutually agreed, the new legislation will also remove the ability for one spouse to prevent the other from divorcing them and in these and other cases will provide for reducing the time it takes to formally divorce, compared to the previous legislation. If you are considering separating from your partner, have made a full and final decision on separating from your spouse, or have delayed commencing proceedings due to not previously having grounds to divorce from your spouse, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors for initial advice and guidance. Your options may have changed. Holmes & Hills has a team of specialist divorce solicitors that is independently ranked as one of the leading teams of divorce solicitors in the region. The team is noted as a ‘strong choice for advice on financial settlements’ by the Legal 500 directory of the county’s top law firms. When you contact Holmes & Hills, you can speak with an expert Family Law solicitor who will help you to understand your options and legal position when considering separating from a spouse. This specialist advice will be aimed at protecting your interests both now and in the future. When discussing your circumstances and legal position with a solicitor at Holmes & Hills, you can talk about the changes to legislation and what this means for you and your options. Call Holmes & Hills on 01787 275275 or email advice@holmeshills.co.uk. Holmes & Hills can offer initial advice via in-person appointment, video conference or telephone call. Initial advice appointments are offered a discounted fee rate

Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club We had a successful friendly match with Glemsford at home, but unfortunately, our first away match against Bures was postponed, but it is good to get back to playing other clubs. Our two new Captains, Mike and John are getting the hang of welcoming visiting clubs, and organising the home teams. Well done lads. Because we have new players, who would like to play matches in a team shirt, we have set up a new account at a local uniform shop. The team shirt has a Lavenham logo based on the Village sign. Members just need to go into the shop and find their size of light blue shirt and the shop will get the logo and even your name embroidered on them. Both our new Captains have ordered theirs. But you do not need a Club shirt to come along to the Club sessions at Lavenham Village Hall on Wednesdays 2pm until 4.30pm and Thursdays 7.30pm until 10pm, although we recommend arriving 15 minutes before each session. Your first two sessions are free to see how you like Carpet Bowls. We look forward to seeing you. Marilyn Beatham – Club Secretary

Bildeston Health Centre leading by example as they maintain Active Practice Charter status Two years on since being one of the first in the county to be awarded the prestigious Sport England and Royal College of GPs Active Practice Charter, the team at Bildeston Health Centre have proudly maintained their Chartered status, where they are continuing to support the local community to be more active to improve health and wellbeing. The Bildeston Health Centre is part of the South Rural Primary Care Network and have helped over 100 local residents to access physical activity support in the local community thanks to the partnership with Active Suffolk. Active Suffolk have played a pivotal role in supporting the Bildeston Health Centre to achieve the accreditation after they were funded by the Babergh District Council to deliver their Active Wellbeing Service from the site. Louise Bissett Practice Manager at Bildeston Health Centre said: “We regularly refer patients into physical activity through our partnerships with the local leisure providers offering exercise on referral. We also ensure that we display information regarding physical activity and the benefits it has to our health whilst also referring into the Active Wellbeing Service delivered by the Active Suffolk team on site. We were really proud to have been awarded the Active Practice Charter, but this was just before the pandemic so It has been a challenging couple of years, however we are happy to have maintained this status and look forward to enhancing the support we offer to our patients and the local community going forward” Matt Brewer, Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Bildeston Health Centre proactively promotes physical activity and refers his patients into the local services, whilst also participating in regular physical activity himself. He said: “Many of the staff here at Bildeston Health Centre are now more active since working in partnership with Active Suffolk and achieving the Active Practice Charter status, and I believe it helps us as clinicians when suggesting increased movement and activity to our patients. Having my running numbers displayed in my clinic room often acts as a great conversation opener and being active myself means I am also very familiar with the benefits it has on my own health. When I am running it is sometimes the only time I get without any interruptions, it allows me to deal with stress, so sharing this with patients helps them to think about how it could help them too.” After initial support from Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Councils, the Active Wellbeing Service is now funded by the South Rural Primary Care Network which enables Active Suffolk to continue working with inactive patients registered with the Bildeston Health Centre. For more information about the Active Wellbeing Service delivered by the team at Active Suffolk, visit www.activesuffolk.org

‘Sibarita’ – Spain’s Organic Larder Introduces New Products The product range of ‘Sibarita’ will soon, for the first time include fish products: preserved tuna and anchovies from Arroyabe, a leading Spanish producer for over 100 years. These are not the products generally available from supermarkets in the UK! So, what are they? There are two sub-species: White Tuna, also known as Bonito del Norte or Albacore and Yellow Tuna. They are caught in summer in the Basque Gulf of Biscay using traditional, ecological “pole, line and hook” methods not resulting in the unintentional catch of other species or damage to the seabed. Both have excellent flavours with Yellow Tuna having a slightly stronger flavour and more colour. They are prepared by hand, one by one, in the traditional way, and packed carefully, manually, in large pieces into glass jars, normally preserved in olive oil, which results in the smooth texture and flavour. The end-result is a high-quality product that looks as good as it tastes. “Sibarita” offers a lower-calory option with tuna preserved in water, an interesting alternative in salads as the customer can chose the dressing to use. Another healthy choice is low-salt white tuna. “Sibarita” is also looking forward to receiving “Ventresca” or belly tuna renowned by gourmets as the finest tuna of all – it is the only Tuna product packed in cans. Ayorrabe claim their Cantabrian Anchovies are the most appreciated and renowned anchovies worldwide for their meatiness, smooth texture and intense flavour. “Sibarita” do not dispute this claim! They are caught in Spring. The ready-to-eat anchovy fillets are cleaned manually and preserved with olive oil in glass jars. This premium anchovy (Engraulis Encrasicolus) is caught only in the Bay of Biscay and follows the traditional, artisan techniques for its preparation in accordance with the deep-rooted cultural habits of the Basque coast and country It is thought the shipment of Ayorrabe products will arrive early in May. Now you know all about Sibarita’s exciting new fish products!. Call Sibarita on 01787 323933 09.00-17.00, Monday to Friday or send an email at any time: hello@sibarita.co.uk

Therapy Gyms Making fitness accessible Over the past 15 years or so, Matt Brinkley, founder of The Therapy Gym, has combined his experience and knowledge in the world of personal training with a commitment to those unable to access conventional fitness facilities. Providing accessible, personalised fitness programmes for those requiring extra support and guidance to improve their overall wellbeing, is now the everyday goal. “We have had such a great response from a wide range of people, in terms of age, fitness and ability. They are now benefiting from the commitment we have to every individual, many had never been to a gym before. That’s why we do it.” Covid has created additional problems to the accessibility of places to socially enjoy exercise and of course, the mental health pressures associated with isolation. The team at The Therapy Gym recognise individual needs and react accordingly, always monitoring, developing and supporting the progress made in the structured programmes. The flexibility of delivering fitness guidance through one-to-one, capped class size, at the gym or online, means everyone can join in, when and wherever they want. The Therapy Gym is perfectly situated just out of town, with onsite parking, easy access to the A12 and within 20 minutes travel time from Colchester and Ipswich. Find out more at www.therapygyms.co.uk or call 01206 692524 to arrange a free taster session and consultation with our team. Make it your first step to fitness today.

Phase 2 @Fork With Christmas a distant memory and the never-ending winter finally coming to an end with the most beautiful Easter weekend we decide that now is the time to launch phase 2 of Fork. With fork being 18 months young we have now taken the plunge into café culture to really complement what an amazing offering we already have and also to give people the chance to sample what we do at floor2 but on a scaled back version. We have always taken pride in using seasonal Suffolk produce at Fork and with phase 2 it is no different, sticking to local seasonal produce and always trying to let the Suffolk larder in all of its glory do the talking with flavours of spinach, asparagus and Suffolk new potatoes on the menu this month. You will also see when passing that we have had a little switch around in the shop to make it a bit more user friendly but don’t worry scotch eggs are readily available still. So if it is a coffee and a cake you are after or you want to have the perfect dinner party @floor2 just pop in and let us take care of the rest. Justin, Kairi, Tom, Sam & Harry

“Didn’t we have a lovely time, the day we went to Long Melford?!” One of our volunteers was singing a parody of a 1970’s hit after our Easter Fair last month. Not everyone remembers the song but the fantastic response to our event was reminiscent of our prepandemic fundraisers. Familiar friends (and dogs!) arrived to browse the stalls and enjoy a snack. Nearly £4,500 was raised including a generous donation from an anonymous supporter. Photo shows stalwart volunteer and Hadleigh resident, Elaine, behind the mask! Mum said it would be too drafty for me to attend due to the open windows and doors to blow away the virus. Fortunately our volunteers were on hand to help rescue a fledgling found on a nearby footpath, popular with dog walkers. The fluffy bundle was quickly brought home to Mum who identified it as a Tawny owlet. It is coming along nicely and will eventually be ‘soft released’ back to it’s home territory. We are looking for more enthusiastic people to join our fundraising team and reliable volunteers to care for the animals one morning a week. Please leave a message on our answerphone or send an email if you would like to help. There are still spaces on the Nayland 10K family-friendly run on Sunday 10th July, starting at Little Garth School, Nayland, CO6 4JR. This raises money for local charities including SESAW. There are routes to suit all ages and abilities. Book your place at www.nayland10k.co.uk The only place I’m running to now is the kitchen where Mum is preparing dinner for all the dogs including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Hadleigh Walkers We had an enjoyable walk from Tattingstone in April with 17 joining us on a lovely day. For our May walk on Saturday 14th we are once again trying a route outside our immediate area. This walk is a little shorter than usual at 7.5 miles. We will depart at 0930 from the Lamarsh Lion a community pub on the Bures to Ballingdon Road (CO8 5EP). Our route will then be Edgar’s Farm, across the railway line and then follow the river Stour into Bures. From there we walk to Bures Mill, Mount Bures, Ferrier’s Farm, Cook Green, Clees Hall, Parkhill Wood, Alphamstone, Moat Farm and back to Lamarsh. The walk is a very pleasant one covering a wide variation of terrains – rivers, woods, rolling hills, open field etc. In addition, the Lion is noted for its real ales, good food and friendly atmosphere - what’s not to like?. If anyone is in need of transport please let us know and we will see if there is any opportunity for car sharing. For those coming from Hadleigh we suggest following the A1071 then left onto the A134 and take the back road through Assington to Bures. Go over the bridge then immediately right onto the Lamarsh Road. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Hadleigh Tennis Club The Hadleigh Tennis Club expects to be promoted after coming second in Men’s Division 4 of the Ipswich & District Tennis League (IDTL). We had less success in Men’s Division 3 of the Winter Floodlit League and we will probably be going down as a result. Our Ladies put up a good show in IDTL Division 5 wining 8 out of 12 matches and finishing mid table. You may be aware that there was a fire at our club house a while back and we would like to thank the Hadleigh Rugby Club who came to our aid and kindly let us use their club house until new facilities can be built. Thanks also to the Council for restoring the flood lights which meant we could play throughout the winter season. This Summer Season sees us enter a new team in the IDTL Mixed League. Matches will be played both home and away on week day evenings against the likes of Woolpit, St John’s, East Bergholt, Stowmarket and Kesgrave. Our first match is on 11th May and our last is in 26th July. Why not come and join our Tennis Club? We have Club Play sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6.30 pm and 8.00 pm and Sunday mornings between 9.30 am and 11.30 am. We are a friendly bunch of male and female players of all ages and abilities so don’t worry about finding players at your level. If you have never played before we can also put you in touch with local coaches. For more information speak to Geoff on 07483 222179, email to hadleightennis@gmail.com or simply come along to a Club Play session

Lavenham Literary Festival is back! The seventh Festival will take place in Lavenham on the weekend of 18-20 November 2022. To launch the Festival, the hugely popular Television presenter Kate Humble is our 2022 Festival Dinner Speaker at the Swan Hotel, Lavenham, on Friday 18 November. We have an exciting programme of authors speaking on subject ranging from history and nature writing to poetry and the pandemic. Making a welcome return to Lavenham is politician turned novelist Alan Johnson whose second novel One of our Ministers is Missing will be published in September. Tracy Borman, a much admired historian and good friend of the Festival will be speaking about her new history of the British monarchy Crown and Sceptre, while Rachel Joyce, whose latest novel Miss Benson’s Beetle is a New York Times bestseller, is in conversation with Paul Venables a familiar voice as Jakob of The Archers. Beloved poet Wendy Cope is reading and discussing her work, Andrew Lownie will explore the ever-fascinating topic of royalty with insider Lady Colin Campbell as well as revealing scandalous royal secrets from his controversial biography of the Duke of Windsor Traitor King. Thomas Harding will talk about his latest book White Debt, the story of the Demerara Uprising which was recently serialized on Radio 4 while Patrick Barkham, the nature writer, will take us into a gentler world. Roopa Farooki, novelist turned doctor, will tell us about the first forty days of the pandemic in her memoir Everything is True, Radio 4’s Book of the Week. And for those who are inspired to write their own memoir, Tom Henry, journalist, author and ghost-writer, is holding a one-day workshop on Creative Writing at the Swan Hotel. Hadleigh & District Flower Club The April Open Meeting was just great. We had Nick Grounds demonstrating in his quirky way - he did nothing in a triangle shape, used lots of greenery and beautiful flowers. His chat was interesting, covering his life as an auctioneer, life in Rutland and a lot of flower demonstrating around the country. Not sure his wife sees much of him! What an interesting, enjoyable evening it was. May brings us Vicky Hease on May 10th so please join us at The Hadleigh United Reformed Church, Market Place, Hadleigh at 7:30. All welcome.
Lavenham Gardening Club Plant Sales in Lavenham in May and Adam Frost is coming in September! The Market Place in Lavenham will again have a profusion of beautiful plants for sale; the first date is on Saturday 14th, mainly annuals (for use for bedding out, containers, and hanging baskets); and the second is on Saturday 28th May, mainly of perennials, but also some annuals. Both are from 10am to 2pm, and organised by the Lavenham Gardening Club, with proceeds used for garden related projects in the community, and Suffolk. Come along and see for yourself! We are delighted that Adam Frost, well known presenter on BBC ‘Gardeners World’, has agreed to be our second Celebrity Speaker, at an event ‘open to all’ - his talk will be on Tuesday 27th September commencing at 7.30pm, in the main hall at Lavenham Village Hall. Adam’s style is much appreciated, and we anticipate that his talk will be ‘sell out’ prior, so we advise early booking. Tickets at £20 each including drink afterwards, are now available for all to buy – no need to be a member = order by telephone from Sandra Harbord on 01787 311707. The proceeds will be used towards a garden related charity.
Lavenham Sinfonia Registered charity No. 109175 The second of three concerts performed by the Lavenham Sinfonia will be on Sunday June 19th 20022 starting at 19:00 hrs. Each concert this season will be led by a series of guest conductors who will bring some exciting interpretations of both familiar works, and some less well known. The season opened on Sunday 24th April 2022 with the conductor Thomas Duchan leading a programme of string music that included some well-known and favourite pieces by Elgar, Holst, and Purcell as well as the lesser-known Gerald Finzi and the contemporary Latvian composer Peteris Vasks. For the second concert the Orchestra is conducted by David Hammond and includes the Peite Symphonie by Charles Gounod composed in 1885 for the Societe de Musique pour instruments a Vent and first performed in Paris. It is scored for Flute, Oboes, Clarinets, Bassoons, and Horns. It will be followed by the Cello Concerto No.1 by Camille Saint-Saens. Composed in 1872, he wrote the work for the distinguished Belgian cellist Auguste Tolbecque who was the soloist for the first performance in Paris the following year. The soloist in June is the young cellist, Dominic Blanchard. The concert concludes with the immensely popular Symphony No.4 “Italian” by Felix Mendelsohn. This is best known and most popular of the composers five symphonies reflecting the music and atmosphere the composer experienced in Italy during his grand tour. It was first performed in London in 1833 with Mendelsohn conducting. Please do reserve the date for the concert which I am sure will reflect the warmth of the long summer evenings as we approach the Summer Solstice. The concert starts at 19:00 and tickets are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/lavenham-sinfonia. Do come and join us!

Hadleigh Gardening Club Our April meeting was so entertaining with Deb Hart giving a talk on willow weaving followed by a demonstration on how to weave a garden obelisk. She kept us amused with her craft skills and history of weaving all sorts of bark and other natural fibres. Afterwards we auctioned the obelisk. Next month on May 9th a garden designer will be coming to give us inspiration. So do come along at 7.30 in the Guildhall. There are still a few spaces on the coach trip to Beth Chatto gardens on Tuesday 14th June. Inclusive cost of £18 members, £20 guests. To book a seat call Maggie on 01473 827082 and get more details. The use of slug pellets containing Metaldehyde has been banned as from 1st April 2022. Metaldehyde causes a risk to the environment and wild life. The problem is the pellets kill mammals too, either because they eat the pellets directly or because they eat slugs etc. that have been killed by Metaldehyde. It is particularly bad for hedgehogs, birds and toads. Another problem is that after heavy rainfall there is a rise in Metaldehyde in drinking water. There are alternative pellets that use Ferric Phosphate and these have not been banned. If slugs and snails are a problem in you garden then try going out with a torch in the evening and pick them up and put them in a pot of salty water. The other answer is learn to live with them. Look forward to seeing on May 9th. email: hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Lavenham Pre-school Open Day event on Saturday 11th June 2022 from 10.00-14.00 Lavenham Pre-school was established in 1995 from Lavenham Playgroup, which started many years ago. We provide care for children from 2 years to 4 years 11 months. We have an intake of up to 24 children per session. After the OFSTED inspection in October 2021 we are happy to say we had been awarded a GOOD grade! If you are looking for a Pre-school for your child, we are delighted to have an Open Day event on Saturday 11th June 2022 from 10.00-14.00 - Please visit us to see the Pre-school, Forest School site and meet our wonderful team! We follow the Early Years Statutory Framework guidance. Children learn about mutual respect and different cultures, and about following rules and practicing table manners. During every session children will be able to explore each of the seven areas of learning outlined in the EYFS. We would also be focusing on supporting a Holistic development of each child considering their individual needs. We strongly believe that every minute we are with the children is an opportunity for them to learn – both from the direct interaction with our dedicated pre-school practitioners, and from the environment we’ve created. We would support children’s independence, decision making and learning through play. We also believe that children should be able to access outdoor space as much as possible. Introducing Forest School sessions in November 2022 helped children learn about the world around them. Forest School is an approach to education that offers ALL learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment. Children are given an opportunity to access our outdoor spaces to practice the skills they are learning, to experience all weathers and to be closer to nature. And, if you would like to see more about us, you can find us on Facebook: Lavenham Pre-school. Or you can go to our website: http://www.lavenhampreschool.co.uk

French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, this last month has been a bit brighter for me and our small team at French’s. We have had some amazing people come forward to help us, like Julie Leach from Hadleigh, who wanted to help by paying for the repairs and for the field shelter company to get the shelter back up for our donkeys, thanks to her kindness and generosity the shelter is fixed and back up, which has pleased our donkeys no end, happy donkeys. Another lady stepped in called Pamela, who is an animal lover, with cats being special in her heart, Pamela made a donation towards our £2,900 vet bills, some of which was from the medication Hercules our beautiful cat needed with his brain tumour, when coming to the end of his life. Thank you must also go out to lovely Romina, who came to the farm met the animals and has asked to be a monthly donator, of course I said “Yes please”. I was tired after a long day at the farm, but I certainly picked up speed when running to get the sponsor forms for Romina. I am not afraid to let my desperation and excitement come through sometimes! Thank you also to Josephine and Karen for their donation. These ladies have picked me up when I felt so beaten and down, they have given me the push I needed to get on with the repair work and pay something off our huge bills. It is so lovely to meet people like these ladies that have stepped into help us at French’s. I would like to meet more, so if you want to do something for us with a donation, it will defiantly keep my spirits up and keep our charity going. I am still calling out for new helpers to put the shed up that has sat packed on pallets for months, if you have any spare time, please give me a call. I am also looking for a part time person who is reliable and hard working. Here are a few dates for your diary: World Donkey day is on the 8th May, you are welcome to come along on the 7th between 10am-1pm and meet our donkeys. We are planning an open day with BBQ on 26th June and a Barn dance at the Ansell centre in July, our next quiz will be on a Saturday evening 22nd October. We have sadly had to cancel our quiz night in May, as it clashed with the Hadleigh show. One of our volunteers is going to do a bike ride fund raiser for us, the fundraiser is called: 80 miles for 80th year. Pamela (shown in photo) volunteers weekly at Frenchs Care Haven and is soon to be celebrating her BIG 80th birthday this year, Pamela has set herself a challenge to complete 80 miles cycling around the local area in 2 weeks. We hope that you will support Pamela by sponsoring her. All money raised will be going to our charity to help in providing the care and health costs of our animals and to the opportunity we offer people suffering with mental health and for them to participate in animal therapy at French’s. Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School Sports Success This term we have taken part is several sporting fixtures where children have represented our school in competitions. Highlights of these events included a group of children from Sapphire Class taking part in an interschools multi-sports event at Hadleigh High School. There were a range of activities and challenges for them to take part in which resulted in an amazing first place from amongst seven schools. This was followed by a group of children from Diamond Class entering a dodgeball competition in a competition at the Inspire Centre, Ipswich. They worked incredibly well as a team against some extremely strong competition from amongst the Ipswich schools in attendance. We were extremely proud of all the children that attended these events, working together to be the very best they could be while cheering each member of their team on, knowing they had tried their absolute best. Easter Service Easter was celebrated this year with a service in Hintlesham Church led by Reverend Jackson and attended by parents, carers and other family members. The service celebrated the many parts of Easter with readings from Diamond Class, prayers from Sapphire Class, an Easter poem performed by Emerald Class and a song, that we were all singing for the remainder of the day, by Ruby Class about Spring Chickens. The children led the congregation to sing two hymns that explained the story of Easter and celebrated Christs rising once again. Boudicca Border Morris Bring You: The First Hadleigh Day of Dance Saturday 28th May from 11.00am in the Market Place Traditional dancing takes many forms. Hadleigh’s own Boudicca follow the Border tradition which is fast-paced with a ‘Steampunk vibe’ and involves dancing with sticks. We have been performing in and around Hadleigh for the last four years. For 2022, we have invited dance groups from across the region to join us in our inaugural Day of Dance. In addition to the Border Style, there will be the opportunity to watch dancers and musicians from other traditions including Cotswold (Bells and Hankies), North-West (Clogs), Molly (Fenland), and Belly (Mediterranean). The event will commence at 11.00am with a massed dance in the Market Place followed by a procession past the Guildhall and Deanery Tower. From 12.00pm until 4.00pm there will be dancing in the Market Place, and the beer gardens of The George and the King’s Head.

Well we had a treat when Hannah from Perrywoods came to give us a talk. We were surprised when she told us about her family business and how it has evolved into such a great garden centre, 6th in the country last year! She went on to reveal the plans for the expansion of our Sudbury store, it is going to be fantastic. Our April meeting was Myths of the Crusades, and May speaker is about Ornamental pins. We certainly have a wide range of speakers. If anyone is interested in joining us or would like to know more, contact me on 01473 677767 or lesleycook0653@gmail.com.
Rotary Review Ukraine Crisis: What is Rotary doing to help? Bulletin No 2 The street collection mentioned last month took place on 25th March and raised £606 including £160 collected in Ferguson’s Delicatessen. A big thank you goes to them, their customers and everyone else who donated on the day. Further funds have come from members donations £203 and a Club raffle for a meal 2 kindly donated by Eight Bells which raised £56. Some of the donations are also registered for gift aid and this will boost the total to £901. All the money has been sent to Rotary’s own Disaster Response Fund which in turn will use this to provide help both inside Ukraine and for refugees outside through local Rotary clubs. Up to now more than £1 million pounds has been sent out and used to provide urgently needed medical supplies including painkillers, wound dressings, hygiene products as well as clothing, food and shelter. The club would also like to thank all the collectors for giving up their valuable time to help. Readers may like to know that before the war started there were 62 Rotary clubs in Ukraine and many of these are still operating and coordinating the aid coming in from nearby countries. Rotary is also established in Russia and since 1990 when the country opened up some 80 clubs have been chartered. The editor of the Russian Rotary magazine has been in touch confirming that it is almost impossible to operate Rotary at the moment. He would like to report the true facts about the war but this will be regarded as false news by the authorities punishable by 15 years in prison! So for the moment Rotary in Russia keeps a low profile ready to rise again once there is a major change of regime. Meanwhile Rotarians worldwide support Ukrainian people in their fight against this most terrible aggressor. Membership: The message in the last issue is worth repeating. The Club is now down to 10 members again and urgently needs new blood. Rotary has been in Hadleigh for 44years and would certainly like to see its 50th anniversary. If you feel that Rotary is worth keeping in Hadleigh and are interested in helping your local community and people worldwide please get in touch – contact David tel 01473 827226

This provision is available at different price brackets/times to suit your daily requirements. Take a look at our website for further details at https://www.bildestonprimaryschool.co.uk/clubs/ Eco Warriors at Bildeston Mrs Townend is working with our children to understand the importance of how we recycle and how it affects our planet! Many things are being done with the children in school within our curriculum on our journey to becoming an Eco-School. Starting with student’s packed lunches being as waste-free as possible keeping plastic bags, pre-packaged foods, and disposable food wraps to a minimum, it all helps!! We are also taking part in the ‘Big Battery Hunt’ sponsored by Duracell. Children took home a box to collect as many batteries as possible and returned them to school for recycling so they didn’t go into landfill! Keep up the good work warriors!! The Big Hoot Ipswich Trail 2022 From 19 June to 3 September 2022, St Elizabeth Hospice is bringing a Wild in Art Trail to Ipswich, and we hope you are as excited as we are! ‘Brian’ the Bildeston owl will be displayed on the trail which has been painted by pupils in KS2. At the end of the trail the ‘Big Hoots’ will be auctioned to raise valuable, much needed funds for St Elizabeth Hospice services providing care and support to those living with lifelimiting or progressive illness. As a school we have raised over £1000 for the hospice by having days dressed as owls, Christmas hampers and decorating a star competition. We are very proud of our ongoing achievements for this great cause! Electricity in KS2 Kestrel Class pupils measuring the light produced by various sizes of batteries during their science lesson. Other Events this term included • Cross Country for kS2 children at the Royal Hospital School • Red Nose Day Cake Sale • Book Fair raising commission for more school books • KS1 Sports morning with Mrs Clarke from Hadleigh High School If you are considering Bildeston Primary as a school for your child, we would welcome a visit. Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) By the time this goes to print volunteers will have returned to their posts both inside and outside the Practice to assist with the Covid booster vac clinics. The long awaited fourth jab will soon be a reality for the 75 plussers and immune suppressed cohorts. Patients in this category, with six months since their last booster, will be sent a letter giving them an appointment to attend the Practice clinic for a Moderna jab. The first vac clinic was on 23rd April with a second to follow on 7th May. If patients are unable to attend for whatever reason, they do not have to call the Health Centre and cancel. There has been no word from Government about further boosters for any other age groups. A new PPG work group has been set up to work alongside the Practice with a view to improving patients’ access to their medical services via the telephone and internet. They will take a critical and analytical look at ways of accessing and improving patient information and appointments. Once this has been simplified there will be a move to encourage patients with computers to book on line. This will help free up telephone slots for those without IT access.
HADS goes ‘Ooh La La’! Following on from our successful return to the stage in February this year, HADS is venturing forth again with a summertime comedy. ‘Allo ‘Allo, written by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, is based on the hugely successful British television series, which ran for 7 seasons. Described as “an uproarious comedy”, the show relates the adventures of a hapless café owner, René, in occupied France. HADS will be holding open auditions for the speaking roles for the over-16s at 7pm on Tuesday 10th May 2022 in Hadleigh Football Club. We are also looking for anyone interested in helping with the design and creation of scenery, props and costumes, as well as non-speaking roles to support our cast. The three performances of this comedy will take place on 24th, 25th and 26th August 2022 in Hadleigh Guildhall. If you would like to play a part, whether large or small, on stage or off, please come down to the Football Club at 7pm on Tuesday 10th May 2022 and get involved. All abilities are welcome and the Committee looks forward to seeing you soon.
Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre A great clean and clear up operation last month saw SJ Sargeant Contractors rebuilding the field fencing we had lost to storm Eunice. The ‘girls’ are back in their rightful paddocks with the friendship groups reestablished, so they and Lyn can heave a sigh of relief. Part of the cost of the fencing is being met by a special Storm Damage grant from Sport England for which we are most grateful.

We also want to say a big thank you to Cauduceus Lodge for their generous donation of £1,000, received last month. Alfie is pictured accepting the big cheque outside his stable, along with our Chairman Jan. All funds are much appreciated, and the ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ quiz on March 26th was a great success. Hosted by our very own Jan Derbyshire, our Chairman, who kept a close eye on proceedings to make sure there was no cheating! 20 teams enjoyed the fish and chips supper washed down by beer or wine, the many great raffle prizes, and raised between them £900.00 for the Centre. The herd and the riders we look after all say a big thank you to Jan and Bob Derbyshire and the fund-raising team for this their first indoor fund-raising event since they came out of lockdown. A raffle organised by the Tuesday team of volunteers will be drawn on April 5th to find the lucky winner of a giant Easter Egg. Can’t wait to see who that is! Well done everybody, you make us feel secure and we do love you for your efforts. After working in shirt sleeves at the end of March (see my photo of a lesson underway in the arena) to freezing temperatures with driving sleet at the beginning of April, the work has continued uninterrupted. All our special riders continue to benefit from what we do here and we absolutely love being part of this team. “Wanna” join us? We wish you a happy (and illness free) Easter and a brilliant two week break. www.shelleyrda.com 01473824172 shelleyrda@gmail.com

Although we carry out our work quietly, discreetly and without seeking publicity I would like to update you with some of the things we have been doing in Ukraine with the generous support of those who have donated to our appeal and which we have been doing since the first day of the conflict. We have teams of people who we coordinate with “on the ground” in Poland to whom we are able to send money to source and buy many of the urgently needed items and then pass them across the border to our people in Ukraine. Many of the things needed so badly are far cheaper if bought in Poland and the right thing can be bought as and when needed. We are using the money helping our teams relocate people to safety, providing urgent medicines, food & water, care products for children on palliative care. We have setup 2 aid delivery coordination points, one on the Polish Border the other the Slovakian Border. Recently we received a desperate request for help to provide specific care items and food for 36 families with severely disabled children stuck out in the villages. They were in desperate need of a mobile ambulance to help move these children, many of whom are immobile. We also managed to provide transportation for a child of 2.5 years who had his legs blown off by an explosion, to a specialist hospital in Germany who have offered to help him. I cannot include the photographs of this child as, with many other photographs we have, it would be too distressing for many to view. Several agencies had said they were going to collect the boy and his father but just did not turn up, this is where we were able to step in and help. We are able to help many people who appear to fall through the net of bigger organisation. Now we are expanding our operation of evacuating children and young people with specific medical needs, first to Poland where they will be assessed and then arranging onwards transportation to one of the special clinics across Europe that we are liasing with. I wish I could be bringing happier, more positive news but at the moment, this is the reality of the situation. We can only hope that a resolution is found sooner rather than later and that we can help the people of Ukraine to rebuild their homes and their lives. If you can support our Charity to donate please txt CCLLUKRAINE + 3, 5 or 10 to 70085 to donate 3,5, or 10 pounds. Elizabeth Parker, Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline 01449 760343

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice I am a single parent, with two young children. I am already struggling to stay on top of my household bills; my weekly food shop isn’t stretching as far anymore and now my energy bill is going up too. I don’t know how I’m going to afford all of these price rises. What can I do to stop my finances spiralling out of control? First of all, you are not alone in this and there’s support to help you. It’s always worth checking if there are benefits you don’t know about that you’re eligible for, including support with your energy costs and living costs. On the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk, there’s a benefits calculator, advice on how to reduce living costs and information on other ways to increase your income. There’s also emergency support that you may have access to, such as food bank vouchers or fuel vouchers. You could contact your local council to see if they could also offer support. If you’re struggling to stay on top of bills, it’s really important to understand what money you have coming in and going out each month. Citizens Advice has a budgeting tool on its website that can help with this. And if you’re already behind on bills, prioritise paying your rent or mortgage, plus energy bills and Council Tax first. Not paying these bills has the most serious consequences. You should speak to the person or company you owe money to, to see if they can help you repay your bills sustainably. We know that times are incredibly tough but please remember, you don’t have to face this alone, do contact your local Citizens Advice to help you find a way forward. If you need advice and support Sudbury & District Citizen Advice is currently providing advice by telephone and email Monday – Thursday, 10am – 1pm. Please phone 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact. If you live in Hadleigh the drop-in outreach at the Ansell Centre is on every third Thursday of the month between 9.30am and 12.30am

Stoke by Nayland Ladies Sunday 3rd April Sunday started off lovely and bright although very chilly for the weekend ladies playing a medal competition on the Constable course. Lesley Hitchcock had a brilliant round having a nett 68 coming in first place. Lesley managed to par holes 5 and 8 on the front 9 but she had an amazing back 9, with birdies at the 11th and 13th and Parring holes 10 and 15, a 9 on the 17th messed up an otherwise perfect playing card. Daily mail foursomes Stoke by Nayland ladies Katie Clark and Clare Nixon played the 2nd round of the Daily Mail foursomes on Sunday 3rd April on their home course. They managed to win the first round at Clacton in extremely windy conditions, after a very close front 9 Katie and Clare managed to pull away on the back 9 to win 4&2. Round 2 on Sunday was played on the Constable course which had dried out nicely and although a sunny day it became very chilly towards the end of their game. The ladies Katie and Clare were playing Sharon and Di Buxton were from Felixstowe Golf Club and it was an incredibly close game. Katie and Clare managed to go 1up by the 3rd hole and kept it that way until the 8th hole then going all square on the turn. Managing to go 2up on the 13th, losing the 15th and 16th meant they were once again all square. The Stoke ladies won the 17th only to lose the 18th meaning extra holes were needed for sudden death. Katie managed a great putt to par the first hole and so winning the match. It was an exciting match and a very friendly competition. Easter Competition results for Thursday 14th April On Thursday 14th April the ladies at Stoke by Nayland played a fun competition to celebrate Easter on the Constable course with the sun shining on their backs. In teams of four the ladies needed the best 2 scores to count, Ladies Captain Sue Gregory kindly treated all the ladies to chocolate eggs as they came off the 18th green. A presentation followed outside on the terrace with the ladies winning Easter eggs! 1st Janet Hodge, Margaret Bentley, Liz Kiddy and Sarah Wordley 88pts; 2nd Katie Clark, Clare Nixon, Johanna Stonehewer-Smith and Bev Thompson 83pts; 3rd Elaine Davidson, Lesley Hitchcock, Barby Jones and Liz Spencer 80pts. Best front 9 Hilary Cairns, Ann Kelza Smith, Susan Swan and “ghost” 37pts. Best back 9 Lesley Munro, Betty Cox, Fiz Grundy and “ghost” 44pts. (A ghost score was used where the teams were short of a player). Mixed Trophy Competition “Peter Blewitt” Jo Little and Del Prichard played out of their skins in the Peter Blewitt Trophy Competition with a score of 47pts on Bank Holiday Monday at Stoke by Nayland golf club on the Gainsborough course. It was a lovely sunny day and everyone enjoyed the American Greensomes format and there were lots of great scores. A presentation was held afterwards on the terrace. 1st Jo Little and Del Prichard. 47pts; 2nd Clare Rowan and Ben Lugton 46pts; 3rd Susan and Rob Swan 45pts ocb; 4th Rosie Mason and Paul Gregan 45pts. Best front 9 was Tracy and Tim Dickens with 23pts. Best Back 9 was Lesley and Barry Hitchcock with 24pt.
