Jubilee Grants Come To Fruition Chairman of the SHCT Grants Committee John Devaux commented “The Trust is thrilled that Jubilee projects for which it awarded grants are now coming to fruition. Her Late Majesty was Patron of the National Churches Trust and I’m sure she would have been delighted to see so many projects being realised in her name in Suffolk. We very much look forward to visiting some of the churches to admire what has been achieved.” Nicola Currie, Secretary of the Friends of Hitcham Church, explained the idea behind their new pew ends: “It was decided to have not one but two oak panels carved, one to record our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the other the parish’s care of the church building at Hitcham, over the same period. These would be fitted to the pew ends at the back of the Nave as these are the first ones seen by visitors to the church. We were keen to keep it simple to fit with our church so we opted for Continued on page 2

Fifty-two churches across Suffolk are installing tributes to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, following grants totalling £170,000 awarded by Suffolk Historic Churches Trust (SHCT). Last year the Trustees of the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust decided to allocate £70,000 to a Jubilee Fund for projects the Trust saw as a fitting tribute to the Queen's remarkable 70 year reign. To spread the money the grant would only be awarded to projects that would not exceed £5,000, with the requested grant expected to cover the bulk if not the entire costs of the project. The fund was open to all churches, chapels and meeting houses. When 56 applications were received, totalling over £180,000, thanks to two legacies, the Trustees felt able to award £170,000 to 52 churches across Suffolk. The applications were many and varied. For example, in Mendlesham a noticeboard has been erected outside the church, in Hitcham carved wooden pew ends have been created, in Elmswell a seat is now outside the church, the organ at Acton is repaired and in Gt Ashfield new wooden chairs for the clergy have been installed.

Continued from front cover the Queen’s crown and words ‘70 years Dedication and Service’ and ‘70 years Repair and Restoration’ under a carving of Hitcham church cradled in cupped hands. “Expert Suffolk wood carver and member of the Master Carvers' Association, Robert Lewis, took such care over our project,” she continued. “We particularly love the way the grain of the oak has made the hands on the parish panel look as though they belong to someone who has been very hard working ...as the work is never ending when caring for a medieval building. It seemed fitting to include the care of our church as the whole project was paid for by the SHCT, who have helped us so much in the past.’ Another project will be dedicated at St Mary’s Church, in Raydon in November: “Our church here in Raydon has used an SHCT Jubilee Grant to commission a painting of the Royal Arms of King Charles III to hang on the blank west wall of St Mary's. We believe it will be the first one in Suffolk. We had hoped to have Queen Elizabeth Arms but her death meant we had to change to one of the King. It will be unveiled on 26th November at morning service”, said Simon Tennent, Vice-President of SHCT and member of Raydon church. SHCT continue to award grants towards church building projects, four times a year. Details are on the Trust website www.shct.org.uk

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) To date over 2,515 covid and 1,912 ‘flu jabs a have been given to the 65 plus cohort in Hadleigh including those in our five local care homes. The Health Centre fulfilled the target, set by NHS England, to have all eligible patients vaccinated by the end of October. This has been a considerable challenge for all involved not least for patients themselves. Thanks to their stoical resolve and the Practice’s noble efforts, a record number of vaccinations were given at each of the three Saturday clinics and some Wednesday afternoon sessions. The ‘no show’ patients of past years have always been 20 to 30%. This was not the case this year. This, plus the lack of alternative NHS venues and patients concerns about the new strain of Covid, made the first clinic exceptionally busy. Extending the hours of the clinics and increasing the number of vaccinators helped cope with the extra uptake at the subsequent vac sessions. As ever, the team of volunteers did their best to support the public and the clinicians both inside and outside the Health Jenny Howarth Centre. This even extended to doggy minding (see minds Elvis photo). Happily, the majority of patients were understanding and appreciated their efforts in difficult circumstances but, sadly, there were some who saw fit to abuse the volunteers. Pleased to report two new members have joined the Practice. A warm welcome to GP, Dr Laura Cattermole who started in October and Physiotherapist, Matt Coombes. Matt has additional qualifications which will enable patients to make him their first port of call for musculoskeletal conditions. Online appointments are posted on the Practice website each morning between 6a.m and 7a.m. If you wish to take advantage of this method of booking one of the Receptionists will give you the necessary information. There is a new kid on the block ‘Our Future Health’ seeking your personal details for their mega-national database. This will form the basis of their extensive research into the current and future health of the nation. The NHS appears to have some affiliation to the initiative but are not running it. Blood Donors are being encouraged to take part. Fortunately, you only participate if you sign one of their extensive consent forms giving you time to look carefully into the scheme. The following quote is the response I received when I asked for more information. “Our Future Health is a collaboration between the public, charity and private sectors. We have initial funding from the UK Government. Support will also come from companies that make medicines, equipment used in healthcare and charities.” If you would like to know more check out the link below. Small Town Duty Tales of Hadleigh’s Great War by Nigel Crisp Published last year, this book chronicles the war of 1914-1918. It tells and illustrates from a perspective of the time, the many stories of the Hadleigh men who left the town to go to war. Written over 400 pages we see: how three 14-yearold boys enlisted in the army; Hadleigh’s blackest day when 16 men were killed at Gallipoli; the witnesses of the Somme and Passchendaele; the final victory and the shadow of aftermath leading to the death of Hadleigh’s last tommy in 1985. And much more. Of the book others have said: “A comprehensive collection of tales about Hadleigh and its people at a time of great national struggle.” - Mark Brennan “A work unrivalled in recording the impact of the Great War on a Suffolk town.” - Friends of the Suffolk Regiment “A fitting tribute to the men of Hadleigh remembered within its covers.” Sue Andrews “Secrets of Hadleigh’s war heroes brought to life.” - EADT “Hadleigh war heroes in new book include rock legend’s grandfather.” - Ipswich Star Priced at £25 the book is available from: Keith Avis the Newsagent - The Idler Bookshop - Hollow Trees Farm Shop at Semer - ebay - or from the author at 85 Angel Street, Hadleigh, 01473 822208, nigel_crisp@hotmail.com www.hadleighcommunitynews.co.uk

Lavenham Sinfonia Registered charity No. 109175 The orchestra’s final concert for this year is a very special event to be held in Lavenham VILLAGE HALL on Sunday November 5th at 15:00hrs. The concert is a memorial to a long-standing Friend of the Sinfonia and long-time resident of Lavenham Phyllis Urch. Phyllis was one of the earliest supporters of the Sinfonia after it was founded in 1979 and remained a resolute patron throughout her life. The conductor is John Chillingworth who is a renowned cellist and music teacher based in Suffolk. In order to distinguish this concert from the Sinfonia’s normal canon of performances and to reflect the special nature of this concert, it has been decided to use a smaller “sinfonietta” drawn from the full orchestra performing a number of smaller scale works in the more intimate atmosphere of the Village Hall. The programme opens with Stravinsky’s enchanting and popular chamber concerto Dumbarton Oaks in E flat, composed between 1937/38 in the composer’s neo-classical period. The piece was commissioned by Robert and Mildred Bliss for their 30th wedding anniversary and named after their Dumbarton Oaks estate in Washington D.C. It consists of three movements Tempo giusto, Allegretto and Con moto played without a break. It was heavily inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos and was first performed in the Music Room at Dumbarton Oaks on May1938 followed by its public premiere the following month in Paris. It is followed by the Concertino da Camera by Jacques Ibert. Written just a few years earlier than Dumbarton Oaks in 1935 this unusual piece is scored with an Alto Saxophone as the lead instrument and is in two movements. The first Allegro con moto is very technically challenging. The second begins with a lyrical Larghetto featuring soaring lines in the saxophone’s upper register followed by a short cadenza leading to the concluding Animato molto. Luiza Lale is the soloist for this performance. There follows two contrasting Octets, the first Jean Francaix’s “a huit” is scored for clarinet, horn, bassoon, and strings. It was created for the famous concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, Willi Boskovsky, in 1972 for his Vienna Octet. And first heard almost exactly 51 years ago on 7 November 1972 played by the Vienna Octet. It is in three movements Allegrissimo followed by the andante slow movement and concluding with a waltz. The final piece is Mendelssohn’s ever popular Octet for strings written in 1825 when the composer was just 16 it consists of four movements Allego Moderato, Andante , Scherzo and a concluding Presto. It is scored for 4 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos. Please do reserve this date for the concert which I am sure will be a great finale to the Sinfonia’s 2023 season. Tickets are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/lavenham-sinfonia. Do come and join us in Lavenham at the Village Hall!

Progress at Brett Galley The last time we contributed to the Community News magazines, we gave an insight into life at the Gallery following the Winter period and our changes to some of the exhibitors. We entered Easter having introduced several new artists and makers. These included a guest potter from near the North Kent marshes, with her beautiful, nature-inspired ceramics. Adding to our portfolio were a stunning photographer, two artists, one using linocut, the other focussing on the declining Suffolk Punch Horse. Two additional silversmiths also joined us. We have maintained some 50 contributors from East Anglia, still limiting any external candidates to one guest per genre. As well as fulfilling orders, we regularly meet all patrons to ensure that stock is refreshed, minimising any suggestion of stagnation. Exhibits are regularly moved around so that work can be viewed from different perspectives. We are active on Social Media and daily maintain our website, with its live shop. The summer, despite its unpredictable weather, has seen many tourists explore what we offer and we have noticed that customers are coming from even further afield within East Anglia. We often post exhibits across the UK and even shipped a ceramic Hare to Australia for someone who had limited luggage space but wanted something quite unique from our region. We have been pleased to see many new faces and are most grateful to those who regularly shop with us whether for that anniversary, birthday, special occasion or indeed preparing for Christmas. Some simply want to treat themselves! We continue to strive to provide good quality, affordable art supporting local talent, with East Anglia having many that fit that description. There is a distinct wildlife and natural theme. All exhibits are displayed in a spacious, calming environment offering somewhere to escape and immerse oneself in other worlds. Suzanne and John welcome you to join us on the Bridge Farm Barns complex at Monks Eleigh, where we present our unique collection of local art, ceramics, woodturning, glass, photography, jewellery, homeware and sculptures. Is it too early to mention the ‘C’ word when bonfire smoke has yet to fill the chilly evening air? I hope not because one of our supporters has the ideal gift for avid readers. They say everyone has a book inside them. Well in Frank Payne’s case it’s not one, not two - but three! Frank Payne started to chronicle his full and interesting life during lockdown, as a fundraising exercise for SESAW. “Here Today, Goon Tomorrow” began with his childhood in wartime London to a promising career in sports journalism cut short by National Service. “Well Worth Waiting For” charts extreme highs and lows in sales and advertising, whilst raising a family and rescuing dogs. The trilogy is completed with “It All Kicks Off on Sunday” which lifts the lid on the inside story of football after forty three years as a referee. Our awesome author is offering all three volumes for £12, a perfect Christmas present or enjoyable holiday reading for you. Frank is donating all proceeds to SESAW, please phone him on 01206 263006 or email cahors@live.co.uk to place an order. Look out for our SESAW stall at the Charity Craft Fair on Sunday 18th November at the Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX. A bumper festive event, open 10am-3pm. Please keep your pets safe during the firework season and check for hedgehogs before you build a bonfire. Mum says now the clocks have gone back (where to, I know not!) and Autumn has arrived, our opening hours are subject to change so please check before visiting us. Mum also says that’s quite enough writing from me, I’m not to get any big ideas, the world is not ready for the memoirs of me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. CCLL – The Helping Hand for Ukraine & Online Charity Shop We have been a little quiet for the last month or so due to a change in circumstances but we are still here and active. The situation in Ukraine does not change and it very much looks as if this is going to be a long term situation so our efforts to raise funds must continue. We have recently been collecting donations of Aid for the trips to Ukraine but this is now being taken over by our Head Office in Hampshire so we will no longer be looking for donations of larger items such as crutches, wheelchairs etc as it is not possible for us to get them to Hampshire. However, in Mid Suffolk our best source of fund raising remains our online Ebay Shop so we would ask you to consider us when you have anything you think might be saleable. Apart from the usual items such as clothing, jewellery, toys etc we have sold an amazing range of items, may of which you may not consider as suitable so, please do get in touch if there is anything at all you could donate even if you think it might not be suitable – we wont know until you tell us about it! It may also be possible to arrange collection. This year we have used funds raised to support a School in Ukraine by providing a complete IT classroom to enable the children returning to school to catch up with the education thy have missed over the last two years and also helped a refugee with her two very young children to be resettled in a safe environment whilst she awaits the return of her husband. Many thanks as always for your support. Elizabeth Parker, CCLL – The Helping Hand for Ukraine mail@ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk - 07771 550868

Open Morning Success for small Church of England Village School Nestled in the heart of the idyllic Suffolk countryside is Whatfield Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School. A small community school with the capacity to have 56 pupils on roll. The school dates back to 1857 and since then has been a central part to village life. A Christian ethos permeates the school and are proud to have strong community and church links. Over the summer holidays the school took on some extensive improvements to further enhance the learning environments, both internally and externally. On Saturday 23 September the school opened its doors to the local community to celebrate the school and its recent improvements. Mrs Shaw – Executive Headteacher said “It was fabulous to see so many people from the local community, prospective parents, existing parents, children and governors coming to take a tour of our setting. We were very fortunate to have the official opening of our newly enhanced early years outdoor area blessed by Bishop Graeme Knowles and officially opened by businessman Mr James Buckle who without his kind donation the improvements wouldn't have been possible. We are also extremely thankful for the support of our fabulous PTFA Friends of Whatfield School - FOWS who have tirelessly raised funds to allow us to have fantastic new playground markings”. If you are interested having a tour of the school please in touch on 01473 833309 or admin@whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk
Hadleigh Old School presents A Festive Comedy Caper Hadleigh Old School, the arts and entertainment venue, at 3-5 Bridge Street Hadleigh IP7 6BY will be hosting the Common Ground Theatre Company’s Christmas Show and booking is now open. ‘Miss Mimple Meets The Ice Wolf’ by Pat Whymark is an hilarious comedy caper performed by a group of players who clearly enjoy what they do. Renowned amateur sleuth and part-time dog trainer Miss Jean Mimple is on a hiking tour of the Italian Alps, sightseeing and collecting the odd alpine to take back to her garden in St Mary Mirkin. In a remote hostelry, she meets Dr Bridges, assistant to the mysterious Professor Ramekin, who lives in nearby Castle Pandoro. The body of one of the servants at the Castle has been found torn into fettuccine, and Dr Bridges invites Miss Mimple to help with the investigation. The locals at the inn warn her of The Ice Wolf, or "Bestia Gelato" - half man, half wolf, half frozen dessert - which has terrorised the region for several months. Undeterred, the plucky Miss Mimple sets off to investigate. Could the terrifying Ice Wolf be linked to Professor Ramekin's experiments? (Spoiler: Of course it is!) Will Miss Mimple ever return to sleepy St Mary Mirkin, and will the odd alpine be happy there or will he miss his Italian roots. The play will be performed on two nights: Thursday 4th and Friday 5th January at 7.30pm. Doors open 6.30pm with licensed bar available. Tickets are available from the theatre company website www.commongroundtc.co.uk Box Office 07807 341364. Is this the first time Common Ground have brought their Christmas Show to Hadleigh? Oh yes it is! Please join us for a night of thrills and laughter and song, as we start off what could become a regular tradition for the festive season.
Looking for a volunteering opportunity outside? Help make a difference at Orchard Barn Here at Orchard Barn we have just six months to make and fit 18,000 wooden tiles. They are needed to complete the roof of our new education space so that we can begin to use it next year for more rural skills workshops. We’re making the roof tiles (shingles) the old fashioned way – by hand using traditional carpentry tools, so there’s lots of greenwood working skills to learn and practice, and it’s a great Green Gym activity to keep you fit and healthy! If you fancy having a go, let us know! Volunteer working parties are held on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING TO BE HELD AT BILDESTON HEALTH CENTRE ON 16TH NOVEMBER 2023 AT 6.30 pm ALL ARE WELCOME
Sudbury Symphony Orchestra Sudbury Symphony Orchestra's next concert is on Sunday 26th November in Lavenham Church at 6:30 pm. The orchestra had hoped to be in St Peter’s, Sudbury for this concert but the overrunning works there mean that it was not ready in time for this concert. The two main works for the evening are Schumann’s stunning Piano Concerto with Jill Morton as soloist and Beethoven’s wonderful 6th Symphony, the Pastoral. We start the evening with Schubert’s very jolly Overture in the Italian Style in C, written when Schubert was just 20 years old. He wrote this and another overture in the style of Rossini who he much admired and who was very popular at the time. And when you hear it you will agree – it is very Rossini in style. Schumann’s Piano Concerto started life in 1841 as a one movement piece for piano and orchestra. Four years later Schumann revised and developed the work into a fully fledged concerto. Ever since its premiere with his wife Clara as soloist this concerto has become one of the most widely performed and recorded piano concerto from this period. The concerto starts with a grand flourish with some wonderful melodies repeated throughout the orchestra and the piano. Following a graceful middle section the concerto moves into a its buoyant last movement full of dance like themes before ending in a jubilant and exhilarating finale. It’s a lovely work which played on a magnificent Steinway grand piano in Lavenham Church will sound absolutely fantastic. The soloist for the concerto is Jill Morton who has played many times with the orchestra and it is always a delight for both the orchestra and the audience when she returns for another concert. She has performed in all the major concert halls throughout Britain and has been heard on BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night as soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra. She will certainly do the Schumann justice! Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, the Pastoral, is a wonderfully original work which includes bird calls (a nightingale, a quail and a cuckoo) which, it has to be said, put the fear of god into the players. There are also peasant musicians falling asleep (so the story goes) somehow portrayed with immense sophistication followed by the famous storm with everyone playing full pelt. This is probably the hardest music to play for a double bass player in the whole orchestra repertoire so please come and listen out for them. The storm passes and the music gives thanks. This is a joyful piece with beautiful tunes that the audience will be humming for weeks to come. So – a wonderful evening of music in store, do come and enjoy.

Ready, Steady, Rent! sessions to help break the cycle of homelessness Dozens of people in temporary accommodation in Babergh and Mid Suffolk will be helped to break the cycle of homelessness thanks to a new training scheme. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ Housing Solutions service has partnered with The Stone Foundation to offer interactive learning sessions to potential tenants, helping to build their confidence and skills around basic domestic maintenance, budgeting and the everyday responsibilities of a home. The training program “Ready, Steady, Rent!” launched this week, helping households currently in temporary accommodation to move on to homes in the private or social rented sector. The initiative aims to help develop the skills needed to maintain a new tenancy and navigate the responsibilities need to successfully run a home, long term. This includes helping participants to reduce personal debt (including rent arrears), increase confidence and awareness of who to ask if they need support. The interactive course is delivered over two days, in small nonclassroom settings. Ten sessions are planned over the next 12 months, helping up to six residents each time, with places offered to those currently living in temporary accommodation or on the Central Suffolk Lettings rent guarantee scheme. Cllr Jessie Carter, Babergh District Council cabinet member for housing, said: “The responsibility of running a home for the first time can often feel overwhelming. Partnering with The Stone Foundation enables us to offer our residents a helping hand in taking steps into the next stage in their housing journey with the tools and skills they need to succeed.”
Hadleigh Evening WI At the start of our October meeting Jeff Rudman gave us a brief talk about how much his mother, who has recently died, had gained from being one of the founder members of our group in 1965. Elaine from Sudbury and District Citizens Advice highlighted the many aspects of their valuable work both locally and nationally. This November we will be preparing a Christmas decoration. The Lunch Bunch were at the Brewer's Arms in October and our next lunch is at Newton Green's The Saracen's Head. In October the Amblers folllowed part of the Connections Trail in Ipswich and it certainly looks as if we will return there some time in the future as there was so much more to be seen. On the 1st of this month they will be walking around Hintlesham. Bookworms liked The Night Gate but the small print and unfamiliar words made a slow (but enjoyable) reading of October's Barchester Towers - I think it helps if one had watched the TV series, albeit some moons ago! The book for November will be lighter reading!! The prizes for the ever popular raffle reflected upcoming Halloween. Each month we have a colour theme when small coins are put against the exhibits brought in that folk vote for - the money collected goes to the Lighthouse Women's Aid in Ipswich. In November the colour is Rainbow. There is no doubt that we are a very friendly group, far more than the jam and Jerusalem image. We have cetainly welcomed a goodly number of new members who have come for a 'taster' and stayed on. We meet at 7.30pm in the Seminar Room above the Library on the third Tuesday of the month. If you would like to join us for one of those 'taster' visit, telephone either the Secretary Glenn Abbassi on 07870 312409, or the President Sheila Webb on 01473 827554 and we will look out for you. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 21st November.
Hadleigh Community Primary School On Tuesday 3rd October 2023, Year 5 & 6 pupils took part in our own Tag Rubgy World Cup Competition. The pupils had been learning Tag Rugby during weekly PE lessons. Attacking, tagging, throwing, receiving, dodging, weaving and scoring tries have all been developed. There were two competitions. In competition number one, winners were England (Pink Team), 2nd was Fiji (Purple Team), 3rd New Zealand (Black team) and 4th, Ireland (Green team). In competition number two, winners were France (Blue Team), 2nd was Japan (Yellow Team), 3rd Wales (Red team) and 4th, South Africa (Orange team). The pupils thoroughly enjoyed showing their talents to all the teachers that came down to support the event, well done for your excellent hard work! On Tuesday 17th October 2023, Hadleigh CPS entered two teams in the Under 11’s Girls Football Festival at Whitton Sports Centre. There were a total of twelve schools that took part in the event. Hadleigh had a Year 5 team in group 1 & a Year 6 team in group 2, where we played matches against Colneis, Claydon, Henley, St Mary's (Woodbridge), East Bergholt, St John's (Ipswich), Morland, Beeches and Cedarwood. Both HCPS teams won their respective groups, which meant that Hadleigh played each other in the grand final! After normal time and extra time, the game finished 0-0 resulting in both teams being awarded joint winners. This was an amazing achievement by all the girls, demonstrating fantastic skills and ability throughout the morning’s games. Well done! Hadleigh Library News There’s always something for everyone in the library and as we welcome in Autumn, the team have been busy creating colourful autumn book displays and artwork for the children’s area. During half term we saw lots of creativity as children joined in with an animal themed craft session. We continue to add new ideas to the library and most recently it's the arrival of some educational puzzles and games. These can be borrowed for a week at a time with a library card, and you will find them on the shelves in the children's library. Soon we will be introducing a toy library. We currently have a small selection of toys and puzzles, but do you have any toys that are no longer needed, in good condition and need a new home? Please speak to a member of staff if you have something you would like to donate. Finally, The Friends of Hadleigh Library will be at the Christmas Market on Saturday 2nd December with preloved books for sale and ‘Lucky Dip Lego’ stall. They will also be selling raffle tickets for this year’s Christmas hamper. If your business would like to support them with a donation of a prize, please contact the library. Regular activities in the library: Stitch & Natter, every Friday 11am – 1pm. Lego Fun, every Saturday 10am –12pm. Free Family Crafts, every Sunday 10:30am – 2:30pm Look out for more Hadleigh Library news and updates in the library and on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/HadleighLibrarySuffolk

Ready for an Autumn clean up?
With Black Friday fast approaching and Christmas just around the corner it’s important to know your rights when shopping and having the confidence to know what to do if things go wrong. As we focus on counting the pennies, unscrupulous sellers turn to high pressure tactics or misleading promises to make a sale. Coming away with more or less than you bargained for can happen to anyone even the savviest shoppers. Citizens Advice Sudbury & District is sharing its top tips to empower shoppers with the knowledge to shop confidently. 1. Does it seem too good to be true? If it seems too good to be true — it probably is. This is especially true for products which are ‘must-haves’ or are sold out in major retailers. Be wary of sites offering big discounts and ensure that you’re buying from the retailer’s official website so that you know it’s a genuine product. You can find out if a company is registered by searching their details on gov.uk. Sole traders (someone who runs their own business) and partnerships (where two or more people run a business together) don’t need to register with gov.uk, so you’ll need to do further research on their site to make sure they’re a genuine seller 2. Check you’re buying from a trustworthy retailer. Do some background research into the company. Start with an internet search about the retailer and have a look at their official website. Make sure you find their return and refund policies so you can understand your rights if something goes wrong with your purchase. Find out how they can be contacted, where in the world they’re based and whether they’re part of a consumer protection scheme. Seeing what others say about the retailer can help you find out if it’s a legitimate seller or not. But remember to look into reviews on other websites too, not just their official website. 3. How do they want you to pay? Be cautious when a seller asks you to pay by an unusual means such as in iTunes vouchers, crypto currency or via bank transfer. These are harder to track and lack the vital protections that you get when paying by debit or with credit card or by a third-party app such as PayPal. Whichever way you pay, make sure you check the terms and conditions to understand what you’re paying for. 4. If something you ordered hasn't arrived If you bought something from a business to be delivered, it’s the seller’s responsibility to make sure the item is delivered to you. If the seller used a courier, they should chase the courier to find out what’s happened to your order - it’s not your responsibility. Check the delivery address you gave the seller. Then contact them and ask where your order is. If the seller claims they've delivered it or don't know where it is, you can ask for a redelivery. You might be able to get a refund in some circumstances. For further information and advice about this or anything else, contact Citizens Advice Sudbury & District on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact We are providing advice by telephone and email Monday – Thursday, 10am – 3pm.

Hadleigh Shed at Shedfest 23 In recent years Men’s Sheds have been popping up all over the place. While they are still relatively low in numbers, you do not have to travel too far to find one. Sheds exist in Ipswich, Sudbury, Long Melford, Stowmarket and many other towns across Suffolk. We are fortunate here in the county to have support organisations like Community Action Suffolk (CAS) who support a wide range of community groups and organisations to enable them to operate more effectively. In late September CAS organised Shedfest 23, a conference for Men’s Shed groups from across the county. The conference which was held near Eye and very well attended, included; guess speakers, practical workshops and an excellent opportunity for some shed to shed networking. It was interesting to meet other sheds and hear how they are all developing. In addition to sending four delegates to the conference, Hadleigh Men’s Shed also led one of the workshops. Chairman Mark Brennan gave a presentation on how Hadleigh’s Shed has adopted a set of locally produced Standard Operating Procedures which cover everything from induction training to safe use of tools and equipment. Using this set of procedures has greatly helped the Hadleigh shed to quickly establish itself, build a solid membership base and grow in confidence. This particular workshop went down very well with the other delegates who were all keen to learn more and get a copy of Hadleigh’s procedures. With the 2023 conference now complete we are back at the shed four times a week, two day time sessions and two evening sessions. If any local men want to come down for a look around or a brew and a chat then please feel free, a warm welcome awaits. For more info please email us at hadleighmensshed@gmail.com or find us on Facebook.

Hadleigh Nursing home takes part in the St Elizabeth Hospice Bikefest Seven Hadleigh Nursing Home staff took part in the St Elizabeth Hospice Bikefest. We had two teams of three and our deputy manager Wendy took part in the managers challenge. All residents and staff spent the morning with the teams to cheer them all on. Residents enjoyed waving pom poms to the background music and cheering each person taking part. During the morning we provided a collection bucket for donations and also had an online charity page which raised £164. Each team that took part paid a fee of £99. In total our home raised around £385 for the St Elizabeth Hospice.
Cocktober Fest A big thanks to Mark at the Hadleigh Cock, after a lot of hard work and planning he organised a really successful beer festival. It was a great success enjoyed by everyone. Lovely ales and barbeque. There were really good crowds for three days. Thanks also to all the hard working staff who made it a great success. Well done Mark and staff, a great success. Hadleigh Society Dr Kate Jewell, an expert in medieval life, will be giving a talk: Minstrels and Mayhem; Professional Entertainers in Medieval Suffolk, to the Hadleigh Society on 6th December. A huge variety of people made their livings providing entertainment during the medieval period, including singing, dancing, acting, acrobatics, storytelling and puppetry. Using records from a 13th century royal wedding feast in Ipswich and other documents she will explore who these entertainers were and what type of diversions they could provide. She warns there may be references to bare bottoms and the odd rude word in Latin! 8pm Wednesday 6th December 2023 Hadleigh Guildroom. Visitors £3, Members free.

Incredible moving cinema bringing unique movie experience to Sudbury Babergh District Council has partnered with Sudbury Town Council and Abbeygate Cinema to bring a unique cinema experience to the district. From Tuesday 31 October to Sunday 5 November, a purposebuilt 100-seater mobile cinema, in the form of an HGV, will be set up in Sudbury in the Kingfisher Leisure Centre car park. The list of films showing includes a healthy selection of new releases like Barbie and A Haunting in Venice, as well as offering Ghostbusters and Haunted Mansion as Halloween specials. By bringing an affordable cinema experience to Sudbury, the council also hopes to boost town centre trade, encouraging even more people to venture in to enjoy half term and Halloween events. Cllr Derek Davis, cabinet member for economic growth at Babergh District Council, said: “This is fabulous to see and will bring a really exciting and unique experience to Sudbury for everyone to enjoy. “Thank you to Sudbury Town Council and Abbeygate Cinema for helping us to make this happen. I look forward to heading down myself and watching The Great Escaper!” Cllr Jan Osborne, Mayor of Sudbury, said: “Sudbury Town Council is very pleased to be working with Babergh District Council and Abbeygate Cinema to bring this unique cinematic experience on wheels to Sudbury. “Accessibility has been at the forefront of the project and keeping the ticket prices as low as possible has been key”. Chris Peters, associate manager of The Moving Cinema, said: “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to bring our mobile cinema to Sudbury and give the good people of the town a quality cinema experience they are currently missing. “Our mobile cinema is fully heated and air conditioned, has full digital projection and surround sound, and of course is fully accessible. We’re bringing a varied programme of films and there will truly be something for everyone!”

Adapting your home to make bathing easier and safer Home holds a central place in everyone's life, but its suitability becomes particularly crucial for older or less abled individuals. The ability to enter and exit the house safely, navigate within, access essential facilities such as the bathroom, cook a meal, and reach the bed without risk all directly impact our dignity and overall wellbeing. If you've started to recognise that some of these tasks are becoming challenging to perform safely, it's time to consider making improvements. Unfortunately, many people find themselves unsure of where to begin, often burdened by concerns about the associated costs. However, financial assistance is available through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) for those with qualifying conditions so they can alter their homes to make life easier. A DFG is a means-tested grant that provides a maximum of £30,000 to make alterations to the home to help people remain independent and safe. This might include renovating a bathroom or kitchen to make it more accessible or converting a downstairs room to a wetroom or bedroom. To apply for a DFG, you can contact your local council or for additional information, visit www.gov.uk/disabled-facilities-grants. When it comes to addressing the crucial area of the bathroom, that's where our expertise shines - we’ve been creating bespoke accessible bathrooms and wetrooms for over 24 years. Sometimes our customers think they need a full renovation but more often than not they just need a few adaptations to make life a little easier such as the installation of grab rails near the toilet or installing a walk-in bath or shower that is easier to access. We understand it can be daunting when considering making alterations to your home, which is why we guide our customers every step of the way. Our friendly home surveyors visit customers in their homes to truly understand their challenges and to provide customised solutions that fit within their budgets. Our Customer Service team are always on hand if you have any questions throughout the process and our commitment to excellence is reflected in our 'Excellent' rating on Trustpilot. Our customers are at the heart of what we do and we’re still a family-run company since my wife Julie and I founded AHM Installations in 1999. Drawing upon the wealth of caregiving, and bathroom adaptation experiences gained over the years we have rolled out our business to other parts of the UK where AHM employed staff can help where our service is needed. We take pride in carefully guiding our customers through the installation of new bathroom equipment in their homes. Our mission is driven by a genuine desire to alleviate the struggles individuals face and our unwavering belief that we can always find a solution, regardless of the budget or situation. If you need our help at AHM please call us on 01473 206918.

Time once again to adjust our clocks as we get cooler weather. For the Carpet Bowls Club it means time to start our InHouse competitions for those who would like to be a bit more competitive, entry is optional. Our trophies are kept in a cabinet over the library terminal, and winner's names are engraved on them each year, as well as receiving individual trophies to keep. We usually start off with the President's Cup, a trophy donated by a past President, now sadly no longer with us, Ernie Spouge. This is a match between 4 lassies and 4 lads, randomly chosen on the day of the match. The lassies won in 2022, so the lads were seeking their revenge, and got it with a win for the lads. Well done to Mike, John, Jack and George. After this starter match, the doubles and singles competitions are played over the next few weeks. Meanwhile normal roll up play continues on our other 3 mats. The Club offers both competitive and social bowling, something we hope for everyone. As always the first two sessions are free to try out Carpet Bowls, and see if you would enjoy it. Our sessions are 2pm on Wednesday afternoons and 7pm on Thursday evening at Lavenham Village Hall. Look forward to seeing you there. Marilyn Beatham
My Tai Chi Journey I am interested in simple things; how to feel well, how to be happy and contented with who I am. I am also curious, inquisitive, I like exploring, discovering areas of myself which are dormant and bring them out, get to know them, play, twist, tweak, develop them. The Eastern practices with their wisdom, subtleties and its beautiful poetry provided me with the ‘kit’ I needed to start getting a grip on myself and life. I arrived to this after a prolonged period where things were OK, but an underlying unhappiness, a feeling of emptiness, was forever present. I was also, needless to say, unfit. Once I started practising Tai Chi, slowly but surely things got better, I gained a sense of direction, clarity was not an unattainable thing looming on the horizon, and I felt ten times fitter! From there onwards it was easy, follow that path and enjoy. There are always obstacles, diversions, hesitations, and the dreadful return to old patterns. A wise master and some excellent teachers kept me on track till I developed my own self-discipline, till I reached that point of no return. I like to think that I could help you to arrive to a similar place. Help you on your journey, help you to feel well, at ease with yourself and others, fit in mind, body and spirit. All I ask for is commitment, patience, perseverance and trust in me and yourself. It is good to be practical, to set no-nonsense targets. The first one is to do with time. How long? Give yourself six months of regular practice, then reassess. My master always used to say ‘you only need one car’. You will by the end of the six months know if this is ‘your car’. I will be running a Free Tai Chi Taster at Lavenham Village Hall on Wednesday 15 November 9.30 to 10.30. To book or for further enquiries please contact me, Diego Robirosa: darobirosa@gmail.com 07743 111550 or the office at Lavenham Village Hall 01787 248599. Hope you can join me!
Tournaments at Hadleigh Tennis Club Hadleigh Tennis Club have had an exciting couple of months. In September we hosted the annual tennis match against Bildeston first played in 1881. A fine afternoon of tennis saw Bildeston win both the ladies’ and men’s matches. Martin Rogers collected the trophy for the Men’s competition and Penny Cubitt for the Ladies’. Bildeston Tennis Club will host next year when we shall endeavour to regain the trophies. President’s Day followed in October. It was a fun tennis tournament organised by our President and hugely enjoyed by everyone. Vic Akerman won the overall trophy and Penny Dunnett was runner up. If you would like to play tennis in Hadleigh please join us at the Layham Road Sports Ground tennis courts all year round on Tuesdays from 6.30pm and Sundays from 9.30am or get in touch via email at hadleightennis@gmail.com
Hadleigh Walkers Our November walk on Saturday 11th will start and finish in Nayland. The distance of the entire route is around 8 miles, and we should be back in Nayland around 1300. We will have two refreshment stops along the way. We will meet at the Nayland Village Hall car park in Church Lane. Coming from Stoke by Nayland, take the first turning on the LHS (Mill Street) and Church Lane is a few hundred yards on the left (What three words – Events.Bleaker.Loosens). We will depart at 0930 and follow a route North onto the Stour Valley Path to Beacham’s Fm, Leavenheath, Farthing Hall, South on St Edmunds Way to Wissington and back to Nayland along the River Stour. As usual, we aim to average a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr) and walkers need to be able to maintain this pace. Any kind of weather is possible so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground may be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com or email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com

In October 2022 Samantha and Vicky Tapp and Nathalie Hooper ran virtual London Marathon and after covering the distance, thought it wasn’t too bad and might be an idea to try an ultra marathon! Geraldine Suckling got wind of this and thought she’d join them. It took a while to find the right one and the Suffolk Coastal Path 50k was chosen because it was good for first time ultra runners and being in September, they thought it would be cool. Ha! Mother Nature had other ideas and it ended up being one of the hottest days of the year! No amount of training can prepare you for what lies ahead on the day. The heat was already building up at the 8.30am start and did not relent. The course is beautiful taking runners from Lowestoft to Aldeburgh passing the beaches at Kessingland, Benacre Nature Reserve, Dunwich and Thorpness. The lowest point mentally was running along what seemed like miles of shingle beach with Sizewell in the distance and never seeming to get any closer. The highlight had to be the finish flags and cheers on approaching the finish line at Moot Hall. Of course, a paddle in the sea afterwards was great for their weary legs. Geraldine, Sam and Vicky finished superbly in just over 7 hours, Nathalie who really struggled with the heat ran in at 7 hours 45. Adam Chamberlin, who only 2 weeks prior had run 100k, finished in just over 5 hours. Of course the question is would they do another? Geraldine would do one tomorrow if she could, Nathalie and Sam would wait till next year and it’s a definite ‘no’ from Vicky! The same weekend in Aldeburgh John Willis Betts and his team took part in the Aldeburgh Triathlon, winning a trophy for the oldest team! September 10th had Elaine Turner and Claire Jacobs running in the Coastal 10. Both put in fantastic performances with Claire coming in 1st place in the ladies race and 2nd overall, once again having to contend with the heat. The following weekend was the Ipswich Half Marathon ran by Stuart Price, Kay Oxford, Joel Bamsey and Kitty Rigby. This is a challenging course, but Stuart made it look easy with a fabulous time of 1hr 20. Kay was on top form and finished in 1hr50. The same weekend Stuart Hunt ran a very good time at the Dedham 10k. Meanwhile Geraldine took part in the Duathlon Sprint in Stowmarket and Jo Sargent competed in the Triathlon Sprint. Congratulations to Geraldine who came first female and this was her first duathlon event! The 24th September was a very busy race day. Starting with the Langham 10k, which is an undulating course, Claire, Joel and Ryan McNeil ran and once again Claire finished 1st lady with a cracking time of 35:40! In London Sam and Vicky Tapp ran the Vitality 10k. Vicky got a knocked off 2 minutes off her personal best and came in at 45:10. Rebecca Martin completed the Sandringham 10k and meanwhile, following the Essex Way the Mayflower Half Marathon from Harwich to Mistley was taking place. A very picturesque course ran by Steve and Stuart Hunt, Jo, Neil Holloway, Geraldine and Nathalie. Some runners ran some extra mileage due to signage sabotage which turned the Half Marathon into something a bit longer! If you would like to join a friendly and supportive running club as a member or a coach you can find out all about us and how to join at www.hadleigh-hares.co.uk
