Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s Innovate Local scheme Start-up businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk are invited to take part in Innovate Local, a pilot scheme designed to help businesses grow and reach new audiences following the impact of Covid-19. The Innovate Local scheme offers businesses either use of a market stall in Hadleigh or Stowmarket, or working space at an innovation hub in Sudbury or Eye. The first business owners wanting to showcase their business on a market stall but worried about taking the leap took advantage of the pilot Innovate Local scheme at Hadleigh and Stowmarket last month, and received support and guidance throughout their involvement. Businesses benefitted from a free pitch at either market for a set period, mentoring and support on running a safe and successful stall, business advice and training opportunities, as well as support before and after the pilot. The Innovate Local scheme is part of the councils’ ambitions to support high streets through the Invest in Hadleigh and Vision for Stowmarket programmes to help develop vibrant towns for residents and visitors to live, work and explore. The market scheme is run in partnership with Suffolk Market Events who currently manage Hadleigh market on behalf of Babergh District Council, as well as several other markets across the county. I’d like to teach the world to sing It is with great pleasure that we can finally announce that the Hadleigh Community Choir will be relaunching on Thursday 9th September at the United Reformed Church, Market Place, Hadleigh, at 7:30pm. We have been unable to meet for a year and a half - it seems longer - and we are very excited that at last we can get together and sing. Of course, there are going to be differences. This is a tricky time of the year for supplies from Spain, though, because of the often quitelengthy factory summer holiday closures. For this reason, Sibarita aims to place orders in the next week or so. Deliveries from the EU are suffering from severe shortages in the availability of transport owing to a massive shortage of HGV drivers in the UK post-Brexit and a reluctance of EU transport companies to risk delays on returning from the UK. Sibarita took a welcome break from dealing with orders online when Jack and James attended its first Farmers’ Market at Raydon, recently, generating a lot of interest in its products – the tall “Carmencita” mills of various mixes of pepper, salt and spices were a particular attraction. Alongside the national e-commerce market for Spanish foods, Sibarita believes there is room for strong local or regional suppliers that are not entirely dependent on online sales. Elmsett Messy Olympics The Olympics in Tokyo may have ended, but Elmsett Messy Church held there own ‘Messy Olympics’. Events included the long jump, hurdles, javelin, shot put, discus, showjumping, high jump, triathalon and boat race- all ‘loosely’ based on Olympic sports! Competitors included 24 children supported by their parents and grandparents. As the event was held on our Village football pitch, there were several spectators – unlike Tokyo! We even had our own Paralympian Evie Edwards who is about to fly out to Tokyo as part of the Team GB Boccia squad. Evie gave us a demonstration and all the children were able to have a go. Look out for her as the Paralympics start – Team GB missed a medal at Rio by just one point, so we wish her good luck this time round. Several passers by commented on how great it was to see the children’s smiling faces and hear the laughter and fun that everyone had. At the end, we had a closing ceremony where everyone got a gold medal and certificate, of course, a posy and a chance to wear a real Team GB T shirt – one size “fits” all! Liz Cope

Yarn Worx, Hadleigh’s New Yarn Shop Following on from our piece in last month’s issue of the Community News we have had numerous people contact us to ask about our new knitting and crochet courses. We aim to offer a course during the week and also one at the weekend and we will run the courses as regularly as they are needed - we want EVERYONE to learn to crochet or knit! We have been working on the details of the courses which we think are going to be a huge amount of fun. Our plan is to really knock your socks off with the presentation! It is our strong belief that you learn to crochet or knit with the very best materials so you will be using the yarn we sell in the shop - the highest quality and most gorgeous yarn we have! You will choose your own colours (that’s a big part of the fun!). There will be plenty of other treats and surprises for you as well. The cost of each day course will be £99 and will include lunch and of course drinks and snacks throughout the day. We will also provide you with everything you need to switch the world off for the day and just escape to a lovely place with a group of like-minded people, learning a new skill which we all firmly believe is as good as yoga for relaxation (and doesn’t require any bendiness!) You will go at your own pace - there will be no rush – and by the end of the day, you will go away with the skills you need to finish your project. We will be running crochet and knit groups so you can come along and craft with others and we’ll also have “clinic” days when we can help you brush up on any bits and bobs you need a bit more practice with. Of course there will be time for shopping and you’ll enjoy a 10% discount on the day of your course. Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club Everyone seems to be happy to get back to normal play at the Carpet Bowls Club, although some members are still wearing facemasks, and we have hand gel and wipes available for use. We started our in-house competitions with the Mixed Doubles which was won by Brenda McIntyre and Martin Wheal. For Brenda this was her 3rd win in a row, and the partnership of Brenda and Martin won in 2017. Martin also had a successful partnership with Mike McIntyre, with them winning the Pairs 2021. We will be running our Singles and Chairman's Cup competitions next. The Chairman's Cup is a competition between a team of lassies against a team of lads. This competition was started by a former Chairman, Ernie Spouge. Well done to our winners and good luck to everyone in our forthcoming competitions. Hadleigh Cycling Club’s annual Gayford Flyer cycle sportive will take place on Sunday, 12th September. The deadline for signing up is MIDNIGHT, SUNDAY, 5th SEPTEMBER. There will be new signed routes of 30 and 60 miles and it is £15 to enter. This year the emphasis is on keeping riders local and exploring the quiet lanes close to the town. This is not a competitive ride: you may ride as slow as you like and enjoy our wonderful countryside! There will a burger or hot dogs for riders and live music at The George afterwards. To find out more go to www.hadleighcycling.co.uk The sportive is named after Oswald Gayford, Hadleigh’s celebrated aviator who in 1933 flew from the UK to South Africa and broke the world distance record. Pathe News filmed his celebration parade through Hadleigh. He also had a distinguished military career. The Club re-started its Junior Section with a 6-week programme at the Northern Gateway Cycle Track, Colchester and it proved be a terrific success with youngsters and adults using this brand-new facility. The course was led by Marshall Crowe with Club coaches, Simon King, Roger Kerr and Perrie Higgs. With a special mention to Benson Ho who pitched the idea to the Club. www.northerngatewaycolchester.co.uk Hadleigh Cycling Club’s “Summer of Cycling” promotion has really taken off with events and social rides galore and around 80 cyclists taking advantage of the £10 adult membership offer (up to 31/12/22). The Club runs social rides throughout the summer. Our Sunday rides usually begin at 8am (average speed 15mph) and 9.00/9.30am (12/13mph) from The George and there is a café stop. We’re also offering social rides for ladies on Wednesdays. They begin at 6pm from the High School and last 1 - 1.5 hours at the pace of the slowest rider. Hadleigh Bridge Club With the easing of lockdown restrictions, we have decided to commence the 2021/22 season on September 6th. Duplicate sessions will begin on Monday September 6th at 7pm and Chicago sessions will begin on Tuesday 7th September at 2.00 pm.The AGM will be held on Monday 27th September at 6:30 pm followed by Duplicate Bridge. Hadleigh Bridge Club welcomes new members if you play or used to play bridge in the past. We are a local friendly club meeting on Monday evenings and Tuesday afternoons at Hadleigh Football Club. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As GCSE and A-Level students received their results last month, my thoughts turned to how different their experience must have been to their predecessors. The impact of Covid on the learning of our pupils has been well-documented at all levels, but I’m confident that the way our vaccine roll-out has reopened society will reduce the prospect of further significant disruption to education. Many individuals are leaving education for the world of work in what must have been a very strange time to contemplate the road to a new career. I regard the creation of opportunity for young people as one of the most important functions of any thriving economy, so it must have been daunting for the latest generation of school, college and university leavers to do so with mass unemployment at one point seemingly on the cards as a result of the Covid lockdown. In fact, unemployment is now forecast to be 2 million fewer than the ONS predicted as we entered the pandemic. The number of employees on furlough has plummeted nationally, falling by 3 million since March. Far from the jobs crisis that had been feared, my experience is that employers are often struggling to find staff, and especially those with the necessary skills. As part of the South Suffolk Taskforce, I have collected evidence from many businesses since 2017 to understand the breadth of the skills challenge locally and have been working with the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce to understand what can be done to bolster the skills offer. Education is obviously a vital tool in this effort, but this is not limited to younger pupils and students. As such, I was delighted when the Lifetime Skills Guarantee was announced in September last year. This initiative provides almost 400 free qualifications for adults who have not already achieved a qualification at Level 3 (equivalent to A-levels). I will continue to work with local stakeholders to ensure that South Suffolk’s economy is as robust and thriving as possible. As lockdown eases we have a brilliant chance to reset, providing real world opportunities for business owners and employees alike.

The Hadleigh Choral Society are delighted to be back in rehearsals this autumn. There is plenty of research to show that singing is good for you. It can relieve stress and anxiety and help with our memory. Singing improves our posture, breathing and can even reduce snoring. However, throughout lockdown, it was the benefit of singing together with friends that was missed more than anything by the members of Hadleigh Choral Society. The social benefit is obvious and being able to blend your voice in with others gives you the confidence to really try hard and improve. Singing is a great leveller and any choir will have the most diverse range of talent and personalities within it. Being part of the choir also opens up a whole world of timeless music. We perform music from the classical repertoire, which spans from the medieval era to the present. You don’t have to know your Bach from your Beethoven; learning the background to a piece of music adds interest. Long serving members enjoy widening their knowledge further and sharing their passion for classical music with others. This all adds to our natural wellbeing, whatever our age or gender. The music and friendship lift you and can bring a certain comfort whatever life may be throwing at you at the time. Do you need to be able to sing? Well yes and some ability to read music is definitely an advantage. Most important is a commitment to practice and come along to weekly rehearsals. If the past 18 months have left you feeling anxious or lonely, or you are simply looking for a new interest, Hadleigh Choral Society could be for you. Hadleigh Old School becomes a Pollinator’s Paradise The art gallery will be staging ‘A Flamboyance of Flowers’ from September 16th at 5 Bridge Street in Hadleigh. The exhibition of watercolour paintings is offered for sale by artist Sandra Wall Armitage, who explained her fascination with flowers: “I have always had a passion for plants, so printed textiles seemed a natural choice for my art training. Flowers have been the main source for fabric design, and many plant forms fascinate me, including vegetables and wild flowers. The main attraction is the wonderful perennials that attract pollinators such as Oriental Poppies, Echinops (aka Globe Thistles) and Asteracea (the Daisy family). I am also drawn to spring bulbs such as Tulips. All plants with genuine wow factors will draw my attention and frequently make me itch to pick up my paintbrush! Watercolour is my main medium, ideally suited to display the detail and complexity of natural form. However, it is the magnificence and vibrancy of colour that most excites me. Bearded Iris – made famous in Hadleigh by artist and plantsman Cedric Morris – and the majesty of Cardoons are amongst my favourite subjects and since moving to Chelsworth in Suffolk, I have been mesmerised by the abundance of Hollyhocks” Sandra Wall Armitage was President of The Society of Botanical Artists from 20132018 and taught textile design on art degree courses as well as painting classes. She will be in attendance at Hadleigh Old School on Saturday 18th September to demonstrate her craft and offer advice to other watercolour artists. Hadleigh Hares Annual Road Races There is good news for runners of all ages with the return of the Hadleigh Hares road races on Sunday 21 November. The very popular annual event was cancelled last year due to the pandemic but with some changes to the usual format to ensure Covid 19 safety measures, runners and supporters can once again enjoy this fun day out. As well as the usual 5 and 10 mile races, there will be a 2k Junior Fun Run. The 5 mile race is named after John Chisnall, a lifetime member of Hadleigh Hares, who sadly lost his battle with melanoma. We will be fundraising for Melanoma Focus, a research charity based in Cambridge. Apart from the opportunity to enjoy the lovely countryside, finishers will receive a beautiful, bespoke medal. Hintlesham and Chattisham C of E Primary School Sports & Wellbeing Week - We had so much Fun! Well, what a super week we have had! The children all enjoyed their sports mornings while earning points for their house cup. We could hear them cheering each other on from the other side of the school! This was followed by each class taking part in their ‘Your Needs Met’ session with Suffolk Minds. We currently have a Wellbeing focus in school and so this training will allow the whole school to share a common language around emotional needs and wellbeing, which will help to support everyone. We supplemented our Wellbeing focus with a fruit pastel challenge - you can see the concentration on the faces of the children sat with their eyes shut in the picture below.

Live music from your local orchestra Lavenham Sinfonia, your local orchestra, is back with an evening of Mozart and Beethoven on Sunday 19th September at 7.00pm in Lavenham Church. Under the direction of its guest conductor Vicente Chavarria, Lavenham Sinfonia will play Mozart’s last and great symphony ‘the Jupiter’ . The concert warms up with more Mozart – his lively overture to Don Giovanni . After this the well known local pianist Andrew Leach joins the Sinfonia to perform Beethoven’s much loved fourth piano concerto. Covid-19 meant Lavenham Sinfonia had to cancel all its 2020 concerts and the first two planned for this year. The orchestra, led by Greg Eaton, is made up of local professional musicians and experienced amateurs. The Chairman of the orchestra, John Hooper, says that Lavenham Sinfonia is looking forward to welcoming back audiences now it is able to perform live again. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre The ragwort digging party took place in a rare moment of heat wave at the beginning of the summer holidays. Half the band of wonderful volunteers scoured the boys’ top field, and half tried to clear a pony paddock for the girls. After two hours of hard work Lyn called a halt and refreshed her victims with Pimms. A moment of camaraderie where the exhausted diggers relaxed in the shade and congratulated themselves on a hard morning’s work. Our grateful thanks go out to them. I hear there is more ragwort growing of course... My ears listen out for more gossip but I’m a bit locked up at present. Security is important obviously, but Babs and I don’t get much of a look in at present. I listen to the Maintenance Team chatting, repairing things and discussing their schedules. My photo shows a bit of a refit going on to the kitchen door!

Hadleigh Walkers Our September walk on Saturday 11th will start and finish at Rattlesden. We will meet at the village Pavilion a little way up Birds Green on the left (IP30 0RS). Birds Green is just past The Brewers pub on the main road into the village. OS map reference TLTL 97995903. We will depart as usual at 0930 and the route is a very pleasant 8.5 miles. Our route will be Wood Hall, Gipsy Lane, Harleston, Great Finborough, Mill Green, Cockerall’s Hall, Poystreet Green and back into Rattlesden. This is really a very pretty walk and contains very little no road work. Some of us will probably meet up at the end in the 5 Bells pub near the church which serves excellent beer but limited food (although they are happy for everyone to eat their own snacks). Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy or rough in places at any time of the year. Don’t forget to bring water for during the walk. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. I’m a single parent and lost my job during the pandemic. My local Citizens Advice helped me apply for Universal Credit which has been really helpful to cover some of the income I’ve lost. But I’m very worried about the upcoming £20-a-week cut to Universal Credit - I don't know how I'll be able to pay for the school uniforms and shoes, especially as they grow so fast! Is there any other support out there to help plug the gap? If you're on a low income or employed, you might be able to get help with some of the costs of sending your child to school, including school meals, transport and uniform. It’s always worth talking to your local education authority to see what support is available as some of their resources and offerings can differ. The following information is for England. Free school meals Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 automatically get free school meals. If you have older children, you can apply for free school meals if you get certain benefits. In your case as you’re on Universal Credit and you applied after 1 April 2018 you would be eligible if you earn less than £7,400 a year without benefits. You can see the full list of eligibility requirements on the Citizens Advice website. To apply for free school meals, you need to contact your local authority, you can check the details at Gov.uk by typing your postcode in. Transport If your children are aged between five to 16, your local education authority might offer free or lower cost transport if you don't live near school or your child's unable to walk there. St Mary’s Church in Chilton St Mary’s Church in Chilton is a beautiful red brick stone and flint 15th century church with a 16th century tower which had sat in the middle of fields and was only accessible by foot. Over the years the Industrial Estate has become a close neighbour which has meant access and parking enabling more people to visit. The Church is open daily between 10am and 4pm and the Friends Group are now starting to put on events again. The first this year will be a Victorian Magic Lantern Show on Saturday 9th October at 7pm with free entry, then on Friday 22nd October at 8pm Jazz in the Church. This Jazz Saxophone and Piano duo from Scotland have had enormous success over many years including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and are now touring again in the UK. 2 course @ £29.50 per person / 3 course @ £35.50 per person Active Suffolk are challenging residents across the county to commit to recording 25 days of physical activity, movement, or sport in recognition of their 25th birthday, using their new online physical activity tracker. Neighbours of a small community based in Sudbury have already committed to participating in the challenge where they hope to increase their levels of physical activity over the 25 days by walking together and taking part in some chair-based exercises. Kerry Butcher from Sudbury first encouraged the community to be active through the delivery of chair-based exercise classes but now six of her neighbours will be participating in the 25 for Active Suffolk challenge. She said: “After qualifying as a chair-based exercise instructor, I decided to encourage my local neighbours to get involved in some regular sessions. I delivered this for them at my home but when we went into lockdown, we moved the sessions outside, however the weather often put a stop to this, so we decided to begin venturing out on some gentle walks together. Although we often take part in physical activity together, competing the 25 for Active Suffolk challenge will give us the motivation to continue and do a little more. It is great that we can all set our own goals as it feels achievable, and I know we will all support one another to meet our goals.” During a short walk, in preparation for the 25 day challenge, another local resident said: “It is great to get out for walks together and to be more active. For me it really helps to manage my Type 2 Diabetes. I love having regular fresh air, socialising with my community, and maintaining my independence.” The challenge which will run from 23rd August – 17th September, encourages individuals across Suffolk to set their own goals which will see them moving more and sitting less, whilst giving them access to a free online physical activity tracker, entry into a prize draw and support and tips throughout the challenge. Laura Beale, Marketing Executive at Active Suffolk says: “The 25 for Active Suffolk challenge is our first online physical activity challenge and we hope to encourage as many residents as possible to get involved. Unlike many other challenges, participants set their own goal so that regardless of their age, current levels of physical activity or ability, everyone can participate. The main aim over the 25 days is to support everyone to move a little more each day, so whether that means making a conscious effort to get out for a short walk, carry out some chair-based stretches or go for a run, it all counts.” Whilst adults are invited to sign up and track daily movement on Active Suffolk's website using their new online activity tracker, fun challenge cards have been designed to involve children across the county too where they will receive a medal following their submission. French’s Care Haven Hello to our readers, I apologise for missing last month’s deadline, I did have quite a few locals say that they missed our monthly news. It was a crazy month with one thing after another, one of those pressing things was, preparing for one of our rescue horses that was out on loan to come back, Boris was joined with his new companion Bee. Bee is the coloured horse and Boris the bay. (pictured) The other picture in our news this month shows some of the helpers in full swing, putting the shelter up ready for our two horses. We now have some wonderful helpers who turned up in August to put the shelter up, a big thank you goes out to the main builders, Darren, David and Gareth, along with their helpers, Sharon, Fin, Jackie, Debbie and Sonny. Each week we have the long time helpers, John, Colin, David and Lewis who come in to do a mountain of jobs, I certainly couldn’t do it without their muscles, hauling all the heavy stuff about, fixing fences and cutting grass. The joy for me is that after all these years French’s are finally getting a good team of helpers on board with us. Hooray for that! Sadly for our Charity for over a decade now we always seem to get overlooked, when so much good work has and is still being done with us. French’s is not just an animal rescue, we have worked throughout this time with young people who have mental health problems and disabilities along with those who are older, that feel alone in life. At our previous home in Hadleigh, we worked with between 20-30 vulnerable people a week, not a month or a year, a week and yet all I ever heard while I was pleading for local support and helpers was “sorry I did not know you existed”. Yet all the vulnerable people we helped, found the pathway that lead to our door and still find their way to our door, they knew we existed, because we do a fantastic job working with animals and the vulnerable together on our farm. We also spent this time working with unemployed people, by helped them gain a variety of work skills, enabling them to be able to find a job. All of this with little to no support from the people we hoped would be there for us, with French’s Care Haven, never being one of the chosen few. That has been heart breaking for me and at times I have felt like I had the world on my shoulders, fighting on alone to keep us going, while struggling financially with our massive outgoings that is needed to keep our rescued animals well fed and given the very best care. The animals care always came first and still does, above anything else, they are the sole purpose of French’s and all the people we help along the way are a wonderful bonus. Now I have got that gripe off my chest, let’s move on to some joyful events that we have planned. French’s have a couple of dates for you to make note of and come along to, as we need all the local support we can get on these fund raising events. The first date I would like you all to put into your diary is for our BBQ OPEN DAY ON 25th SEPEMBER between 12pm-3pm, come along have something to eat and drink with us, join in and meet the animals. For any further information contact Sharon who is head of our fund raising events. We have a date for our QUIZ NIGHT 20th NOVEMBER IN HADLEIGH. It will be another fun night with fish and chips, homemade cakes and a raffle, along with a good laugh for all. Hadleigh & District Garden Club At last it has arrived!! The date for our first Garden Club meeting since all those lockdowns Monday September 13th 7.30 pm. Our speaker will be Janet Parsons and her talk will be ‘How to look after orchids’, the entrance is £2 for members and £4 for visitors. There will be a raffle and refreshments as well as a sales table. We have a new venue - the Guild Room at the Town Hall (entrance at the back opposite the church), the evening will be much the same as before but there will extra measures in place to keep people as safe as possible, we ask people to be mindful of these on the evening. We have speakers booked for October and November and we are hopeful that in December we will be able to have our annual quiz evening, so things are certainly going in the right direction. The photo this month shows some members of the committee on a visit to Benton End house and garden. As you probably already know this house was at one time the home of Sir Cedric Morris the celebrated artist and plantsman and his partner Arthur Lett-Haines, it was here that they established the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing. Cedric was famous for breeding bearded irises naming 90 cultivars many of which carry the ‘Benton’ prefix. The house is now in the hands of the Pinchbeck Charitable Trust, they are working with The Garden Museum London to revive Benton End as a centre for artistic and horticultural study and are keen to develop links with the local community, we hope to have Lucy, our guide for the day, to come and speak about the work going on there in January of next year. In the veg patch lift, dry and store onions and cut the fruited canes of summer- fruiting raspberries to soil level, leaving new canes thinned to 10-15cms apart. Autumn is a good time to plant perennials while the ground is still warm. Hadleigh & District Flower Club Hello everyone, it was so nice to get to see so many of you at the beginning of August as we were kindly welcomed to the beautiful gardens of one of our fellow members. we are very grateful to our host and her husband for allowing us to gather here and admire all their hard work and dedication. we enjoyed the tea, cakes and catching up, even the sun shone, it was enjoyed by all. As we are nearing September, it looks as though we will be able to hold our first meeting on Tuesday 14th September at United Reform Church at 7.30 pm. The demonstrator will be Crystal Dyball, her title ‘Up the Garden Path’. Members should follow the Government’s guide lines on Covid Risk Protocol. H.A.D.S is back! Yes H.A.D.S is back, and I'll say it louder for the people at the back. H.A.D.S is back! We're so happy to be back, our production is in full steam ahead. It goes without saying the last year, and months have been extremely difficult for everyone. We've all missed seeing friends and family, the trips out that we took for granted, cinema and theatre visits. COVID has hit everyone in many ways. We're all trying to get back to normality. The H.A.D.S committee has been in regular contact to discuss how and when we can put on a new project. With social distancing rules it wasn't viable for us to do anything in 2020 taking into consideration the costs of running a show. Now the rules have been lifted we can confidently say our new panto for 2022 is going ahead. 2020 should have been a year of celebrations for H.A.D.S as it was our 100th birthday. So we're more than making up for it this time and bringing you our very own story of The Wizard of Oz. The committee met and to say the atmosphere was electric with excitement is no understatement simply because we regard ourselves as a family, and when families get together the joy is overwhelming. As a family we couldn't be more proud of the younger generations who choose to give up their time to spend with us. This production script has been co-written by very talented two younger members Celsey Goodyear and Eli Gregory. Directors this year will be Jo Sheldrake and Russel Allen. There's going to be a few twists on the original story, but keeping the very lovable characters, the friendly scarecrow, cowardly lion and tinman. If you see yourselves as either The Wicked Witch, The Great Wizard of Oz or even a flying monkey please come along to our auditions which will be held at URC Church in the Market Place, Hadleigh on the 5th and 12th of September 2021 at 3 o'clock. Everyone is welcome, all talents whether you've experience on stage or not. If you feel you would like to help backstage or front of house during the shows, please also pop along to an audition day and meet with the committee members. Please note that although we are a Hadleigh based group, and all our past productions have been performed in some of our dearly loved churches we have had to make the decision to use the village hall in Elmsett for this production. Unfortunately to put a production on we have to hire a stage at huge costs to our budget. Thankfully Ellmsett have kindly said we can use their hall which is brilliant for us as it has a stage already there. Rehearsals will be mostly in Hadleigh on Sunday afternoons. Shows will be in the school half term holidays week commencing 21st of February. 2022. HADS Membership fee is £10 to cover the cost of insurance. Hadleigh Art Club We are a group of people who enjoy drawing and painting. We get together on Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 pm for a couple of hours in the upstairs room at Hadleigh Library. We like to think we are a friendly group We will be re-starting our meetings on 7th September We have a weekly theme or idea to help us overcome artistic block, but you are free to do your own thing if you prefer. From time to time, we arrange workshops by local artists to help us improve. To join the Art Club is £5 per year membership and £3 per session to cover the cost of the room hire. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. A NEW drama school set to open in Hadleigh this Autumn is offering a free taster session for budding young actors in September. Act First is an independent drama school that provides fun and inspiring workshops for boys and girls aged between three and 18 years old. The company was founded by professional actor and drama teacher Sarah Hitchin, who runs successful centres in Essex and Cambridge. After moving to Hadleigh earlier this year, she was keen to set up another school in her new hometown! Sarah said. “I am so excited to offer the children of Hadleigh the chance to come and try out an Act First Session! “As well as learning valuable drama skills, our students also gain greater confidence, improved concentration and a huge sense of pride in their accomplishments! “At Act First, we are not only passionate about acting but about stimulating young imaginations and of course, having fun! We feel that drama also plays a big part in understanding the world around us and helps with emotional and social development.” Sarah worked as a professional actor for many years in the UK and Europe after going on work in theatre-in-education and to teach at the National Theatre School. She now delivers drama to primary schools across Essex and Suffolk as well to her 150 Act First students. Act First teach a wide range of ages, with the younger pupils being whisked away on a new flying carpet adventure every week to enjoy role play games, characterisation, improvisation, and storytelling! Meanwhile, the intermediate students (6-11s) will find themselves immersed in fun, interactive activities and work towards putting on a performance for their family and friends. Senior students (12-18s) will explore a wide range of drama styles and methods in preparation for a fantastic showcase performance at the end of each term! Act First prides itself on making sessions affordable for all and offers discounts to low-income families as well as full scholarships. Hadleigh Evening WI After that very long break, like so many groups The Women’s Institute in Hadleigh is looking forward to getting together again at their monthly meetings. The view of the WI among many is that of a bunch of menopausal women making jam and knitting. Far from it! (though I guess some may be good at doing these). We hold meetings every third Tuesday at 7.30pm in the library seminar room, the next is on September 21st. There is always an invited speaker or fun activity, as well as the opportunity for making new friends and catching up with old over a cuppa. Just a few examples of past talks: ‘Can I take eggs into Britain’ - working in a British embassy overseas; Gemstones and pearls; Reflexology; Nursing in Yemen; Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds; Working as a courier bringing stem cells or bone marrow from abroad for leukaemia patients. Each talk is interesting, informative and more often than not amusing. Everyone has a voice and we look forward to welcoming new members from all age groups. (sorry gentlemen, we are the Women’s Institute, but who knows what could happen in the future. Wheels in motion for cycle race through districts The full route for this year’s Women’s Tour has been announced, revealing that some of the world’s top cyclists will travel through Babergh and Mid Suffolk once again. Suffolk plays host to the final stage of the race, with this year’s champion being crowned on Saturday October 9, following a day of racing between Haverhill and Felixstowe. A scenic route will take the peloton past the historic Melford Hall stately home in Long Melford and through Babergh’s largest market town, Sudbury. Riders will then pass along the runaway at Wattisham Flying Station, an airfield spanning over 1,000 acres across both Babergh and Mid Suffolk. The route also includes Stowmarket, which had the honour of hosting the finish for stage one of the Women’s Tour back in 2019. After travelling through the heart of Mid Suffolk, cyclists will head south towards the finish line at Felixstowe. A nail-biting final is expected, as, to date, four out of six editions of the Women’s Tour have been decided by 11 seconds or fewer. Cllr Derek Davis, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for communities, commented on the announcement: “It’s fantastic news that our district will play a part in the final of a renowned national sporting event – showcasing the history and beauty of Babergh to everyone following the race. I am also delighted that Wattisham Flying Station features in this year’s route – reflecting the importance of our county’s military community. Like many, I can’t wait to watch on the day, and I’d encourage all our communities to come out in force and cheer on some of the world’s top cyclists.” Cllr Harry Richardson, Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing said: “We had a fantastic turnout when Stowmarket was selected to host the stage finish in 2019 and I hope we’ll see this again when we have the honour of welcoming back riders in October. I know that many Mid Suffolk residents will not only want to show their support for the race but will also be inspired to take up cycling themselves. This is a great way to improve health and wellbeing and those looking to start riding, or get back in the saddle, can find advice on the Keep Moving Suffolk website.” The race is expected to be a significant boost for businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk, with Suffolk’s six previous stages delivering a net economic impact of more than £5.3m for the county’s economy. The former Angel Court care home in Angel Street, Hadleigh has been converted into 21 new homes, all available as social housing, helping lower income househunters find a home of their own. The development, funded by Babergh District Council and Homes England, is a mix of one and two-bedroom flats – offering affordable rent (below market rate) and shared ownership options to residents – as well as adding a further nine homes to Babergh’s council housing stock. Pentaco Construction, site contractors, presented the keys to the new council houses to Councillors David Busby and Jan Osborne this week. Cllr Jan Osborne, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “We believe everyone in Babergh should have somewhere affordable that they can call home. Social housing is required within every local community and this development meets a range of needs – whether they are adding to our 3,500 council houses across the district or helping those on lower-income to own their own property with a part-rent, part-buy option. Ultimately, these properties are more than bricks and mortar. They are now people’s homes.” Cllr David Busby, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for assets and investments said: “This is just one example of the investment we are making to ensure we have the right type of housing in the right place to meet the needs of local residents. This was a significant council investment to breathe new life into a disused town centre site, and solve a local need for social housing - offering a real demonstration of the council’s ongoing desire to support its communities.” Gavin Napper, Managing Director of Pentaco Construction said: “With the ever-increasing need for quality affordable housing, Pentaco are delighted to support a project in which we not only create new homes, but repurpose a derelict site to build something better. We are excited to continue our involvement with more projects that use spaces creatively to create opportunity and improve the quality of life for residents, local communities and businesses, just as we’ve helped achieve here at Angel Court.” The project was managed by Iceni Homes, with agents Richard Utting Associates. Property and construction consultancy Ingleton Wood provided architectural and planning services for the scheme. News from Stoke by Nayland Lady Captains Day - Stoke By Nayland's Ladies Captain Janet Hodge arrived on her special buggy in a blaze of sunshine, decorated in Red, white and blue for her special day. The ladies made a guard of honour with their golf clubs then she was presented with a beautiful bouquet of red, white and blue flowers. The ladies played on the Gainsborough course, half went off the front nine holes first and the rest off the back 9. There was a Janet Hodge, Lady Captain separate 9 hole Competition for the with her decorated golf buggy new ladies so that everyone was on Lady Captains Day included. It was a Betterball competition with the best two scores to count on each hole. The ladies enjoyed refreshments of Pimms and lemonade, homemade Elderflower and veggie or pulled pork burgers. Once finished and with the Covid restriction now lifted the ladies were able to celebrate the day inside with cake, scones and a cup of tea. Sarah Viner gave a very emotional and informative talk about the Andy Cole charity to the ladies as this is one of lady Captains very worthy charities for this year. The prize giving followed. Saturday 24th July - On Saturday the Stoke By Nayland weekend Ladies played a Medal Competition on the Gainsborough course although rain was threatened it was another lovely day. Barbara Jones had an amazing nett 71 just beating Katie Clark also nett 71 ocb. “Hole in One” - Mark Clark recorded his 1st ever “Hole in One” on Friday 23rd July. Playing Stoke By Nayland’s Par 3, 11th Hole, Mark Clark pictured after Mark used a 7 iron off the green tees and aced holing his tee shot his tee shot. Congratulations Mark. Copella Cup Results On Saturday the 7th August, 103 members (ladies and gentlemen) played in the Copella Cup on the Constable course. It was a blustery and showery day and with the previous days heavy rain the course was playing long but with receptive greens. The day was won by Mr Cyril Williams with 42 points, playing off a handicap of 4. Cyril started his round early in the day with a steady game parring the first 6 holes. He then had 5 birdies in the next 7 holes, including a chip in on the long par 4 12th. His round was completed with a steady run in to the finish. Having only dropped shots on the two hardest holes on the course, the 3rd and the 14th, Cyril described his game as the best of his life. A 2 under par gross was enough to win & cut his handicap from 4 to 2. The best of the field behind him all had 39 points with Darren Kempster coming 2nd, Phil Stevens 3rd and Michael McLachlan 4th. England Golf Women’s Medal Final At Woodhall Spa – 10 August 2021 Katie Clark from Stoke by Nayland Golf Club finished 2nd in England Golf Women’s Medal Winners Finals held at Woodhall Spa, the home of England Golf. The National competition which is open for every golf club in England to put forward their leading medal winner was held on The Bracken Course, with a practice round on Monday, followed by the Final on Tuesday. The Bracken, which was in lovely condition, is very challenging both from the tee and on the very undulating greens, caddy & husband Mark proved invaluable in his advice and support. Katie came in with a stableford score of 36 points, a steady 18 out and 18 back, to take 2nd spot. She was absolutely delighted with this result and had a lovely 2 days at Woodhall Spa, including a competitor’s dinner on Monday evening where she was presented with a trophy for winning the East Regional final at Ely in June
