High Street Loyalty Card powers on! Hadleigh’s Loyalty Card shopping scheme set up by the town’s Chamber of Commerce has been such a success that it’s been difficult keeping up with demand for the cards. Two print runs have been exhausted and cards were in short supply until District and County Councillor Brian Riley came to the rescue and financed the printing of 25,000 more cards with his donation of £500 from the Community Locality Budget. Brian, who is District Councillor in Hadleigh North and County Councillor for Hadleigh, presented the cheque to Jane Haylock of Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s summer party at Priory Hall in Hadleigh. “Support for our High Street is a key factor in the continued attractiveness of our town and I’m proud to be able to make such a firm and practical contribution,” said Brian. Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce President, Tony Addison, welcomed the cheque and said how pleased he was to see such a commitment to Hadleigh’s future and the recognition that market towns are worth supporting. The Loyalty Card, which was Jane’s project, encourages people to shop locally. Shoppers collect stars on the card each time they spend money in participating shops, pubs and restaurants. When all 10 stars are collected the cards are handed in to take part in a monthly prize draw. “We now have 1,700 handed in each month which represents 17,000 sales in Hadleigh shops,” said Jane. About 75 percent of the cards handed in come from Hadleigh residents with the rest from neighbouring villages and some from people who have stayed in the town as tourists.

y l u J f o d n e e h until t Museum of East Anglian Life has a new Suffolk Punch mare The Museum of East Anglian life has a wonderful new equine addition to its rare breeds of the Suffolk Trinity. Thanks to a donation by a member of the Suffolk Horse Society, Tulip, a 7 year-old Suffolk Punch mare has joined the museum team. Museum Director Tony Butler says “Tulip is a lovely looking horse with a blonde mane and good temperament. We are very grateful for this gift.” Tulip joins Major the museum’s other Suffolk horse, who at 22 should enjoy the presence of a younger female companion. Alongside its historic buildings and collections the museum has examples of the Suffolk trinity, animals specially bred for the terrain of East Anglia. Suffolk sheep, Red poll cattle and Suffolk Punch horses are all featured alongside an ‘associate member’ the Large black pig. Tony Butler says “Suffolk’s museums, farm parks and Suffolk Horse Society are vital in reminding the public that not so long ago these specially bred animals made a major contribution to the prosperity of agriculture in East Anglia.” For more information & a full list of activities have a look on the museum website www.eastanglianlife.org.uk or pop into the Tourist Information Centre and pick up a leaflet.

News from Whatfield School The end of an enjoyable and exciting Summer term culminated with our traditional sports week. This year we enjoyed a huge variety of sports and activities, including horse-riding, carpet bowls, yoga, circus skills and trampolining, which were kindly provided by our local community, local clubs and our sports coaches.
Budding athletes were keen to show off their new skills, and concentrated hard in one of the hottest weeks of the year! Our fantastic week culminated in the traditional sports afternoon, with lots of races and relays, then the family bbq, where we were entertained by Steff and Nonsense.
If you would like to come along and meet us, we have a coffee morning booked in the village hall for October10 th, and you are welcome to take a tour of the school. If you would prefer, you can at a different time, by arrangement with the office on 01473 823 309 Lynne Golding, Headteacher

Little Waldingfield History Society
Restaurant, Lounge & Bar
On Saturday 29th June, LWHS held a very successful coffee morning to share our current Heritage Lottery Funded project research with villagers and make use of the lovely home baked cakes left over and frozen after the recent interviewee tea party. Many old friends dropped by, along with some new ones too, whilst we also identified some more faces on our old group photos. Much reminiscing ensued once again, which is a really nice aspect of all LWHS meetings and events, and everyone agreed they had a wonderful time. LWHS continues to look for other sources of information for our history of Little Waldingfield project, with residents already providing photographs and other memorabilia from their own family archives. If any reader has anything that might be of interest (documents, maps, photos etc) or artefacts pertaining to Little Waldingfield or its residents during the past 200 years, LWHS would love to borrow them for our research; all such documents would be copied carefully and returned promptly. Please refer to our blog pages (http://littlewaldingfieldhistorysociety.wordpress.com/) or the LW website for more information on this exciting project.

FOBS Summer Fete a great success! Friends of Boxford School raised a record breaking £2700 at their Summer Fete on Saturday 29th June. We were blessed with great weather and provided with lovely performances from SISTARS and Miss Lesley’s School of Performing Arts. The traditional fete provided entertainment for the children and gave the adults the opportunity to enjoy the numerous refreshments on offer. This successful day was rounded off with a Tug of War, which was fought tooth and nail by everyone involved including the children and provided much amusement for those watching. Friends of Boxford School is pleased to announce we are now ordering The Outside Classroom, which will be an additional learning area but has been designed to incorporate a performance area with seating too and can also be used by the children in their recreation time. Friends of Boxford School continues to support the children and school with additional items and subsides school trips. Recently we were able to support our current Year 5’s on a day trip to France giving some of the children their first venture overseas. This year we have also treated all the children to an after school party with a professional entertainer. The fete would not have been a success without the support we receive from the following companies and individuals who offered their services or made donations to the raffle so we would like to thank Peake Fruit, David Burr Estate Agents, Alan Leeder Butchers Boxford, Codair Design, Stoke By Nayland Hotel, Walkers Snack Foods (Copella), Easton Farm Park, MW Partridges of Hadleigh, H Byham Dairy, Colchester Zoo, Rollerworld/Quasar-Colchester, Corncaft Tea Room-Monks Eleigh, The Crown-Stoke by Nayland, Hollow Trees Farm, Sunflowers Childcare Boxford, South Suffolk Leisure, Village StoresBoxford, Tescos, Sainsburys, Morrisions, The Fleece-Boxford, Simon & Andrea Long.

Zack is back – new Head Chef at The Bildeston Crown Zack Deakins is to be the new Head Chef at The Bildeston Crown, taking over from Chris Lee who has run the kitchens at this award-winning Suffolk inn for almost ten years. Guests, however, will be forgiven, if both Zack and his food appear familiar. Although for the last 18 months, Zack has been head chef at Le Talbooth, prior to that he spent 3 years as Chris Lee’s senior sous chef. Before settling in Suffolk, Zack was a chef at Restaurant Martin Wishart, Edinburgh’s first Michelin-starred restaurant and L-R, Zack Deakins, James Buckle, so he has the perfect credentials Chris Lee for taking over at the AA3 rosettes restaurant/hotel. The opportunity for Zack’s return came when Chris Lee and his wife Hayley decided that it was time for a new challenge, working with a consortium of investors rolling out a number of gastropubs in the region. Owner, local farmer and businessman, James Buckle is the first to recognise how important Chris Lee has been to The Bildeston Crown but is very optimistic about the opportunities a change at the top will bring: “Of course we are sad to see Chris and Hayley go. After 10 years they are quite simply family and as such, we have to appreciate their decision and the need for a new challenge. We wish them all the very best in the new enterprise.” In welcoming Zack back to The Bildeston Crown, James is equally emotional: “Zack is Chris’ natural successor. He always was. The only difference is that he now takes on the role having had the experience and responsibility of being a head chef. Zack knows the team, the culture, the values – in fact everything that makes The Bildeston Crown special. He is taking over at a very positive time and I am very excited about having him on board and watching him build on the achievements of the past but at the same time, very much making his own stamp on the business.” Zack is also delighted to be back. “Head Chef at The Bildeston Crown is quite simply my dream job and whilst I very much appreciate the experiences of the past 18 months, I know it will feel good to be back in the kitchens in Bildeston.” Zack starts at The Bildeston Crown on 14 August. Meanwhile, Alice Gibbons, who has been working with the inn in a consultancy capacity, is to join in the role of Hotel Manager and Izzy Lamble, who has been with The Bildeston Crown for the past nine years, has been promoted to Front of House manager.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard in Ipswich Hospital My dear readers, July has not been a particularly good month for me. I had to have an operation at Ipswich Hospital. Although the procedure was fairly straightforward, it was to be a daunting prospect for me since I had not been in hospital before. The morning of admission dawned and I had to arrive at the Hospital by 7.30. I was fortunate to be accompanied by my mother and a good friend and so I did not feel quite so alone. I had never had an operation before let alone have to be anaesthetised. From the time of my arrival until the operation at a little before 12 noon, I was called in to see the various specialists involved. I did not know though when the moment of truth would be upon me. At 11 I was asked to don a gown (a fairly mundane affair without trimmings) but it was another 45 minutes before a nurse took me to the operating theatres. I must admit that I was fairly scared as we arrived outside the theatres which were a buzz with activity. I remember seeing all sorts of cylinders and medical staff running around. I was taken into a small room and put in a bed where I was wired up. I was then pushed through some double doors and into the operating theatre where there were large oval lights on the ceiling, machinery and various surgeons all in their overalls and they seemed to be wearing short wellington boots. By this time, I was in something of a tizz, however, the nurse looking after me was very kindly and re-assuring. I was told that I may feel a sting in my arm and that was the last that I remembered. I came round at about 2.30 in the afternoon and was wheeled in a motorised bed to the new Garrett Anderson building. I was so delighted to find that I had my own room with a lovely bathroom. I had to stay in hospital over night where I was so well looked after and I even came across one or two of you – my readers. Soon after I came round I had rather a nice dinner of turkey lasagne and a jam sponge pudding with custard. There is always an up-side. I am grateful to my readers and clients for their best wishes and I am now feeling much better. One never knows what is around the corner and so if you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place then please have a word with me. This is a document that will enable those that you appoint to run your affairs in your place even after you have lost mental capacity. There is something of a procedure to go through, however, we can handle all of that for you. Do telephone to enquire. I wish you well for your Summer Holidays. Howard Gibbons

Launched: A new voice for communities in Suffolk Healthwatch Suffolk is local voices influencing and shaping local health and social care services. It finds out what you think about your services and then uses those views to shape and improve them because the best services are built around the needs and experiences of the people that use them. It will also provide an information and signposting service to help you navigate the health and social care system and understand what to do when things go wrong. Over 54% of people who had a problem with health or social care in the last three years did nothing to report it and Healthwatch aims to change this. As a powerful and independent consumer champion, Healthwatch Suffolk has the strength of the law and the national influence of Healthwatch England behind it. Providers and commissioners of care must respond to its concerns explaining what action they will take, or why they are not taking action. With its seat on the new Suffolk Health and Wellbeing Board, it is able to ensure that the views of local people are taken into account when decisions are made about what services are needed in our county. Healthwatch Suffolk can also use your views as evidence to enter and view premises where care is provided to people such as care homes or hospital wards. This allows trained volunteers to speak to people as they are receiving the service and assess the quality of the service from the perspective of its users and the community. How can you be involved? You can become a member for free and receive the newsletter which will help to keep you informed of the latest opportunities to be involved. Most importantly however you can tell Healthwatch Suffolk about your experiences of health and social care services so that it can use your views to challenge them where necessary or encourage continued good service. You do not have to be a member to comment. Healthwatch Suffolk has been given the role to listen and the power to significantly influence change within the health and social care system. To find out more and have your say now you can contact the team on 01449 703949, follow Healthwatch Suffolk on Twitter (@hwsuffolk), visit www.healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk or send an email to info@healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk.

Excitement surrounded Miss Lesley’s School of Performing Arts (Bildeston Branch) on Tuesday, 2nd July when the cast of TOWIE (The Only Way is Essex) arrived in Bildeston for the filming of a 1920’s style murder mystery dinner at Christmas Hall. Some of the students were lucky enough to meet several of the cast and have photographs taken. A special MLSPA thanks to ‘Arg’ who took extra time out to talk to students and the growing crowds and proved that with fame and fortune you can still be a very nice person! MLSPA Bildeston and Boxford schools return in September for a new exciting year which is sure to be full of performing opportunities and fun times; both schools are now taking registrations for the new term and classes are Class 3 - Bugsy - MLSPA 1920's style! available for ages 4 to 16 and teach core elements in dance, drama, singing and musical theatre with a strong emphasis on confidence building and fun all at an affordable cost! The Shoulder of Mutton hosts garden party for children’s cancer charity The Shoulder of Mutton Pub in Assington is hosting a garden party on bank holiday Sunday, 25th August, from 1pm. This is the 5th year of their popular annual party, which has become an impressive fundraising event for Help the Heroes over the past few years, and this year they shift their attention to raise money for CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity. Punters will be treated to a BBQ and bouncy castle whilst being entertained by live band, Stakeout. The pub are encouraging guests to join in the fun and wear an item of pink on the day! Local fundraising manager for CLIC Sargent, Alison Ramsay said “We are extremely grateful to The Shoulder of Mutton for choosing to support CLIC Sargent this year. It promises to be a lot of fun for all the family. Every day, ten children and young people hear that they have cancer; so their fundraising is so important, helping us to continue supporting children and their families here in Suffolk, and across the UK.” CLIC Sargent provides clinical, practical and emotional support for young cancer patients and their families, from diagnosis onwards. For more information visit www.clicsargent.org.uk. If you are interested in supporting CLIC Sargent through your own fundraising, please contact Alison on 01284 829090 to sign up for your fundraising pack. Fur further details on the Garden Party, contact Tina at the Shoulder of Mutton on 01787 210334.

Thankyou! I had never organised a public charity collection before and it proved to be a real "chicken and egg " exercise. The first priority seemed to be to get the required permissions to operate on the date set, Saturday 29th. of June, Armed Forces Day, whilst it was still vacant. Babergh District Council, plus all three local supermarkets provided almost by return, the required consents. Next was to enlist the foot soldiers to hold the collecting boxes. Hadleigh now has a population in excess of 9,000 and you would think that part would be a doddle. In excess of 250 leaflets displayed or delivered, three newspaper entries, two local radio station appeals and just three intrepid volunteers came forward. Thank you Mrs. Joan Rudman and son Jeffery, plus Mrs. Jane Harrison. All three came along for an early shift in the morning before having to keep other engagements, so we were able to cover two of the three sites. It was then that Hadleigh and it's visitors showed that as shy as they had been in coming forward, they were no slouches in donating to a cause close to their heart. The day ended with £634. 05 dedicated to the memory of Drummer Lee Rigby so tragically and brutally murdered, being sent to Help for Heroes. Thanks are due to the magnificent support given by the staff of the two stores where our few in number dictated where we were based. Finally on a lighter note, would the two ladies who inadvertently put their trolley tokens in a collecting box like them back ? I am not so sure who donated the Turkish pound coin but I will save it !! Thank you Hadleigh, Fred Breyer

Welcome to Barker Carpentry! Barker Carpentry is run by Max Barker who has recently relocated from the Essex coast to Sudbury. The business covers all carpentry requirements from works around the home and garden, to renovations, and new build developments. Services include; flooring; skirting and architraves; door hanging and window fitting; fencing and decking; design and construction or repair of summerhouses, sheds and timber garages; fitted wardrobes; kitchen repair or replacement - this list is by no means exhaustive and new projects are always welcomed with enthusiasm. Although Max continues to get work in the Clacton area both from returning clients and new customers, he is looking to start building a similar client base locally and cut out the commute thereby reducing his carbon footprint and being closer to home and brand new baby girl, Isla! Max really enjoys his work and especially likes the opportunity it gives him to work within his local community, and Sudbury already feels like home to the family of three. He prides himself on his high standards and professional and friendly service – customer satisfaction is extremely important and as a result most of his business comes from personal recommendations. Do you have a project in mind but are not quite sure where to start? Allow Barker Carpentry to take the pressure off – Max can arrange quotes for you and organise work from other trades should further skills be required. Whilst we have been looking at the people and workings of the mill there has been another element of the site that we have not over looked yet not mentioned – the wildlife around the mill. As the summer open day was taking place many feet above a pair of Kestrels were busy feeding their chicks. There are two, perhaps three, perching high up on the side of the mill above the entrance. It was a delight to watch from the garden below as each parent raced to feed the hungry and very vocal brood. On the river the swans were having a testing time with their small clutch of cygnets determined to seek out every type of adventure to be had whilst their mum and dad struggled to keep them from danger. Whilst this was unfolding the lone kingfisher flitted along the surface of the slow ambling river – occasionally diving into the water to capture a little minnow for lunch. A pair of little dippers make their way slowly up and down the river bank bobbing as they go in the dappled shade alongside the many dragon flies courting and mating above the reeds and lily pads gently swaying in the breeze. As the donkey from the days event plods around the meadow a cheeky vole pops up to have a look at the crowds before nipping back into the water closely flowed by a grass snake looking for supper. There is a brief struggle as the vole is entwined in the snakes coil before a final dash for freedom sees the snake without supper. The swifts screech high overhead as they swoop ever closer to the roof of the mill and the house martins skim the surrounding fields for food on the wing – their natural take away. In the distance is a peacock calling that is echoed by the call of the buzzard cruising high above on the thermals created by the hot summer sun. So next time you visit the mill just stop for a minute to watch the other world as its occupants make their way about their everyday life as we rush around in ours. The day is the 30th June and the family and volunteers spent days getting ready for the grand open day at the mill. Last minute preparations are in place and the staff from other venues on site start to arrive before all the days guests do. Then the exhibitors of the vintage vehicles and static engines start to arrive as do the vintage motorcycles. A sense of excitement builds in the minds of those standing to greet the guests for the day. Within no time at all there is a small trickle of eager visitors all wanting to see what has been going on at the mill since the last open day. Children race towards the bouncy castle and games whilst adults wander around the vintage cars, motorcycles and tractors with eyes of memories and of ‘I wish’ as they steal a look at the interior of one of the many beauties on display. Chris and Bill capture people’s imagination with tales of the workings of the mill and how – one day with help from as many as possible – it will be working once more. A local model maker, Richard Webb, brought along a model of a working mill that delighted guests young and old as it whirled into action and the miniature sacks of grain are pulled to the top floor of the model. In the meadow there flows the distinct sound of the static vintage engines accompanied now and then by the shrills of delight as another child has a donkey ride on Snowy or Tiger along the banks of the river meadow and through the middle meadow. There were displays of dancing, martial arts, tug-o-war, golf and football as well as the bouncy castle for families and friends whilst young and in love couples could visit the Venue for weddings and meet a great many people offering services for the big day from catering to the ring, cakes to the photographer. All the units on site were open too so that guests could see what the complex has to offer visitors. From the art gallery came the prize of the day – a painting of the waterwheel sold for £280 and added to a very generous £1009 raised towards the restoration of the mill. It has been discovered that there are 15 buckets that will need replacing at a cost of £3200 in Corten Steel before the cost of fixing them to the repaired wooden wheel. To date we have five people who have sponsored a new wooden tooth for the wheel and we hope many more people will come forward to buy a tooth for a special birthday, events, place or – dare we mention – Christmas. What a gift that would be two fold. The first for generations to come to enjoy the mill once more working and the joy of someone knowing a sponsored tooth is part of that. As the day drew to a close plans were being made for the next bigger open day at t’mill – so keep your eyes peeled for more information and thank you for reading. Allan Scott-Davies

The main emphasis will be on events since 1900: the civil wars of the 1920s and 1930s; the rise of nationalism and communism; the foundation of the People’s Republic; the rule of Mao Zedong with the bitter years of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution; and finally the emergence of China as a great power ruled by the Communist Party but increasingly based on a market economy. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre School’s out! And no doubt many of you will be looking forward to some time away. We at The Centre will have a quiet interval until our Riders return in September, just time for a breather, although work continues with the day to day needs of exercising the horses, field cleaning, maintenance etc. so never a lazy day, well that is, except for me; I can go into shutdown now until my Riders return, or just watch everyone else keeping busy. However, just before I nod off, I would like to come back to our Shelley Show which was held on 30th June. I was ecstatic when one of my Riders won a Cup, yes, Hannah Mitchell! This year she was nominated for a Certificate of Achievement in Riding Progress on me, Ebony, and was presented with my cup, 'The Ebony Cup', at the Shelley Show. My informant tells me that the next day the Cup was engraved with her name and she is photographed proudly holding it together with her rosettes. Just to fill you in a bit, Hannah started riding with us at Shelley in 2006, when she was 4 years old. As she was unable to sit up by herself, and had very poor control of her head, she rode on BABS initially, with a Helper sitting behind to support her (Back-riding is our term for it). She was delighted when I came to The Centre and makes her preference to ride me clearly known! Over the years her muscle tone and strength have improved and she is now able to ride me without a back rider, certainly at walk, and often at trot and canter as well. Hannah is a great lover of speed! She lives life to the full, joining in with all the family activities; she is an enthusiastic party goer, with a good sense of humour. She is able to communicate with an Eye-Gaze computer programme and delights in showing her teachers at school the 'joke of the day' when she gets in. A very big ‘Well done’ from me Hannah! A full set of results for the Shelley Show is posted on our Website. I know I feature in this one quite a bit but, as you will have read, Hannah’s development through riding has been remarkable and this story can oft be repeated in respect of many other of our Riders who attend The Centre. Well, moving on, I will remind everyone that it is soon time for The Long Distance Sponsored Ride; Sunday 15th September in fact. Please make your entries, or obtain sponsorship forms, from Maggie Rayner, email: maggierayner@hotmail.com so do come along and have an enjoyable day, with cakes and tea at the end. Your support in keeping The Centre running is important as can be seen with Hannah and how we have helped to change her life for the better. Well…..I think it’s time for me to power down, at least for a while. Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172
Ronald King Many thanks to all the people that attended the funeral of Ron last month. It was really lovely to see so many of his old friends there, I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to thank you on the day. Also thanks to all the other family, friends and neighbours who have supported us during the difficult times at the end of his illness. Lastly, to the staff at Friars Hall Nursing home who helped make his last days so comfortable, and helped bring him contentment. Leslie & Eileen King

The Eye of Time Vintage Boutique celebrates its First Birthday in Burlesque Style! A Sold Out ‘Kabarett Der Nameless’ (or Cabaret of the Nameless) returned to Clare’s beautiful Town Hall last weekend for a second show by popular demand. The audience arrived and hungrily awaited an evening of pure escapism and delight, usually only reserved for London and capitals across the globe - They were not disappointed. Award Winning London Cabaret Club, The Double R’s Benjamin Louche entered and whipped the audience into frenzy as he introduced International performance artist, singer and fashion icon: Mr Pustra. Dressed as a RenĂŠ Gruau Illustration he sang an amazing rendition of Dietrich’s ‘Ich Bin Die Fesche Lola’, in his own inimitable style, then followed by ‘I’m Through With Love’ and NoĂŤl Coward’s ‘Mad About The Boy’. Burlesque starlet, Vicky Butterfly followed with her signature routine, ‘The Moth ‘ mesmerising the audience, especially when the stage was darkened to illuminate her glowing wings. Mr Pustra closed Act 1 with homage to American Vaudeville with his clever marionette act and an Eddie Cantor song. Act 2 was even more entrancing: Louche’s weirdly dark persona kept the underground and forbidden flavour going before introducing Mr Pustra again. As the curtains opened, Mr Pustra dressed as scandalous 1920’s performer, Sebastian Droste, emerged seductively complete with Egyptian inspired make-up and styling whilst holding peacock feather fans and eating fire in a sensual and hypnotising performance. Vicky returned to the stage with her most beguiling ‘Swan Bride’ routine, leaving the audience breathless. Finally, Vicky and Mr Pustra (both wearing a Louise Brooks’ style bob) performed together to the melancholic ‘The Morning after the Night Before. Vanessa Howard proprietor at The Eye of Time commented; “Many of our customers said there was no reason to dress up glam anymore, so our birthday event gave them plenty of reason and it was amazing to see so many making the effort especially those in vintage.â€? The event was also raising funds for local charity Sue Ryder Care who provided the most delicious chocolate birthday cake. Over ÂŁ200 was taken from a raffle with top prizes donated from the vintage shop including a 1930’s quilted dressing gown a contribution from Dragon Drinks. Mr Pustra signed autographs, posed for photographs and paid tribute to the Clare and its patrons The evening finished with dancing to vintage sounds from Twinwoods DJ, Strolling Steve.

New Colchester Venue Opens with Satirical Performance Art by 85 year old Hadleigh Resident The Waiting Room at the old Bus Station in Colchester is being transformed into a brand new arts community space as part of the St Botolph’s quarter regeneration project. It will celebrate its official opening on Friday 16th August with an Opening Night Party and a ‘wake’ in the form of a satirical art performance Sarcophagus: September 2008 created by 85 year old Peter Johnson from Hadleigh, Suffolk. Colchester School of Art (part of Colchester Institute) in partnership with The Creative Co-op, have taken over The Waiting Room to create a vibrant centre for learning, creating, presenting, selling and above all socialising. It will include Artists’ Studios, a History Project, Library, Temporary Shops, Café, Bar and Kitchen run by Charlie Stocker, Master Chef: Professional Quarter Finalist Peter Johnson, 85 years, pictured in his garden in Hadleigh, with 2012. All this means it is likely to become one of the town’s most the original prototype and small scale model of Sarcophagus: popular social and cultural hubs. For further information visit www.st- September 2008 to be exhibited full size at The Waiting Room botolphs.org. Colchester Jayne Knowles, Head of Colchester School of Art, says “I am delighted to be able to work with Colchester’s creative community and help it flourish. This will provide support for our existing students and develop a platform for them to market their ideas once they leave us and embark upon their careers.” Sarcophagus: September 2008 is a modern day Hogarthian comment on the state of the global economy. The artwork itself, in the form of a gilded replica of a full sized human skeleton in a transparent coffin, will remain on display at the Waiting Room for 6 weeks after the opening. Scattered around the golden skeleton are the trappings of financial recklessness including a clutch of credit cards, an empty Champagne bottle, a laptop, a mobile phone, a luxury sports car key fob, a watch and a copy of the FT dated 16th September 2008 announcing the global economic crisis after collapse of Lehman Brothers. A mortuary ticket is attached to the left big toe with the inscription “Mammon: September 2008”. As part of the performance art Sarcophagus: September 2008 will arrive by hearse and be carried into the Waiting Room where Peter will give a eulogy to assembled guests. “As an 85 year old pensioner I never imagined my performance artwork would end its journey at The Waiting Room that is simultaneously embarking on its own exciting journey as Colchester’s new arts venue” Peter Johnson of Angel Street, Hadleigh said. “Two years ago I had this sudden vision that would not leave me alone. I made notes, sketches and budgeted. Despite the realisation it would cost quite a bit, almost the equivalent of two Saga cruises, I became determined to turn Sarcophagus: September 2008 into reality. Is it an oldman’s folly or something more significant? Frankly I do not care, for I have enjoyed the journey immensely and have cemented lasting friendships in the process.” For further information visit www.sarcophagus2008.co.uk

The 11th National Student Art Exhibition On Tuesday, 9th July ‘The National Students’ Art Exhibition’ was held in the Mall Galleries in London. Thousands of students across the UK entered 350 chosen to exhibit their work at this prestigious event. One of these talented students included Boris Takam from Year 9. The exhibition features the best young artists in the country- it was a truly exceptional and inspirational exhibition. Well done Boris! “My work made it to the exhibition, so I had to go to London with my Art teacher, my mother and a friend. There was a massive crowd in the museum and they all had a good reason to be excited, as all the work was fabulous. I’ve learnt that I need to work on a larger scale. This experience was brilliant and the atmosphere was electric. I had so much fun that I didn’t notice the time passing and I had lots of new ideas and inspiration for future years.” Induction Day On Friday 5th July Year 6 pupils from Beaumont, Hadleigh Community Primary, St Mary’s, Hintlesham, Bildeston, Whatfield, Elmsett and Kersey participated in various subjects such as MFL, Sports, Maths and Food-tech. The Year 6 groups that were involved in Maths with Mr Lloyd participated in a treasure hunt and were required to use skills such as communication, co-operation and mathematical skills to solve the code of the treasure chest. The Year 6 groups managed to find a code but unfortunately not the correct one and to their disappointment they missed out on golden treasure which to any child, is chocolate. Mr Lloyd said: “The year 6’s were very keen to learn and worked well with each other.” The Year 6 groups that were with Miss Burnyeat decorated cupcakes and designed packaging for them; they were then able to take them home. One Year 6 pupil commented, “It was cool and they were really yummy”. The Year 6 pupils are very excited to be joining the High School in September.
The Year 7 Robot Exhibition on the 22nd July Recently the Year 7’s have been extremely creative in Art, designing and making clay robots. They had to put their ideas down on paper before bringing their plans to life in clay. The exhibition was held on the evening of 22nd July. We asked one of the students what their experience was like and they stated: “It was really fun and it was great being able to design your own creation because there are no limits to it!” Year 10’s Photos get recognition Recently, Molly Grimsey (Year 10) participated in a Photography competition called ‘Snap’. She sent in 10 photographs and received certificates for 2. Around 60 students entered the competition, most from Suffolk One. Only 20 got certificates, so well done Molly! These were her thoughts on her experience: “I feel that overall I did very well for my age. The lady handing out the certificates commented on how beautiful my photos were- I felt honoured. I’ve learnt so much from this experience. Most of my photos didn’t have much meaning behind them, but were well captured. However, many of the other competitors had lots of meaning behind them and inspired me.” Next year, Molly will be running her own photography competition for the school and any student will be able to enter. Get snapping! Report of the day for Budding Journalists On the 25th of June, six Year 9 pupils from Hadleigh High took part in a Journalism day at the High school. Year 4 pupils came up to the high school to take part in a French day. The day consisted of many taking part in activities around different subject areas. In History, they were learning about French speaking countries and why they speak French. They also decorated cupcakes in Food Technology and made labels for them in Textiles. They had a simplified French lesson and French activities on the computers. The Headteacher of Hadleigh High, Mrs Gibson, shared her opinion of the day: “I think it is great for younger children to see the school in action and to meet older children. They can also have educational experiences using the secondary facilities that they wouldn’t normally get to use.” An extract: Forging Friendships New friendships were formed at break and lunch when children from different schools were spotted playing tag with each other. Contented and happy with their new friends and different surroundings pupils from all schools interacted enthusiastically together and joined forces in a mass celebration of break time. Hopefully, these new found friendships will continue and when they join high school it won’t be as much of a change. All the children got very involved in the activities and were 26

the nearest sixth form college – Suffolk One. The day was spent undergoing shortened versions of lessons that can be taken at A level in a bid to help them understand more clearly some of the opportunities on offer to them when they leave Hadleigh. Further to this, a number of Year 10 students were also recently selected to visit One to participate in a Geography Master Class. It was an afternoon designed to improve exam techniques.
Year 10 get a taste of the World of Work From Monday the 17th of June to Friday the 28th of June, Year 10 students were not in school, instead they were at their work placements to carry out their Work Experience. This allowed them to experience working environments and also allowed them to understand what certain jobs entail. Many of the Year 10’s thought it was a great experience and that it changed the way they viewed certain jobs. As well as this, work experience allowed them to apply key skills that will be vital in the workplace in the future, such as communication and organisation, as well as helping them develop their confidence. Duke of Edinburgh- From Bronze to Silver 34 Year 9s have recently started working towards the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. They have completed their training weekend which was full of hard work and required real commitment. They are now looking forward to their next expedition. In Year 10, a staggering 47 students have now completed the Bronze Award. This is in fact a county record! Phil Brown (a former English footballer and current manager of Southend United) is coming into school to present the Bronze award to the Year 10’s. Some of the students that completed the Bronze Award are advancing to the Silver Award. This is what one of the students who completed the Bronze thought. “I am so pleased I completed the Bronze Award because I’ve learnt so much. The qualifying expedition was physically challenging but I pushed myself to the limit. I am now starting my Silver Duke of Edinburgh. It’s going to be a huge commitment, but it’s so rewarding! “ Creative Writing Workshop On Tuesday 9th July, 10 students from Hadleigh feeder primary schools came to Hadleigh High in order to participate in a Creative Writing Workshop led by the Year 10 English prefects. The Year 10 students had previously taken part in a workshop run by Mrs Dawson, and so this was their turn to present to the younger pupils. Each prefect had been given a section of the workshop to lead. Lots of the tasks involved focusing on different types of creative writing and poetry and all involved enjoyed the day immensely. The younger pupils were very enthusiastic and composed exceptional pieces of writing.
The Prom This year’s Prom was an overwhelming night that over 120 students and 30 staff got to enjoy. Without a doubt, there was a large variety of unique and creative arrivals – including a Ferrari, a digger, stretch limos and even a helicopter! Year 11 Form Tutor,Miss Clarke, commented, “All the students were beautifully dressed and everyone had a great time. It will be a night to remember by all.” The prom was voted “Best dressed Prom” in our history. The Prom committee worked really hard, and it really paid off. The Prom was the last time that the Year 11’s would all have the opportunity to get together. We all wish them luck in whatever they end up doing in the future. Goodbye Year 10 Community News Team As we say hello to the Year 9’s, we have to wave goodbye to the Year 10’s. As a Year 10 myself, I have really enjoyed being on the Community News Team. It has been a lot of fun, and I probably most enjoyed walking around the school combing for interviews! Mrs Reader said: “This year’s Community News Team have been a real pleasure to work with. They have been enthusiastic, committed and totally reliable. I appreciate all the hard work they have put in over the last year.”
The new team As a final comment, good luck Year 9, as it will be a challenge at times, and goodbye from the Year 10’s. We will miss being on the team!
Glenn's successful bike ride Glenn Abbassi has recently returned from the D-Day Challenge bike for MAG Mines Advisory Group which clears landmines and destroys weapons in conflict areas around the world. She rode a distance of 560km, 350 miles. Along with 11 others, only one female of much younger vintage - in fact Glenn was the oldest in the group - they set off on 18th June, cycling from Chessington to Portsmouth (the North Downs defeated her and much walking was involved!) crossed to Caen on the ferry, then cycled through Normandy to Paris. 10 dedicated male cyclists, all with the gear and gears! Proper bikes, not like Glenn's old bone-shaker! The average distance covered each day was 75 miles, one day it was fewer, one day it was 90. On the way they visited Sword, Juno and Gold beaches, Arromanches, heart of the Normandy landings, Pegasus Bridge, where the first house to be liberated from the Germans still stands, and the Falaise Gap which was the site of a crucial battle in August 1944, D-Day itself of course being the 6th June 1944. Every day Glenn cycled on her own, as the men were literally miles ahead, and occasionally she arrived at the lunch stop to find only the left-overs! There were an incredible number of hills, all of which were insurmountable by her, and it was a challenge in itself to wheel the bike for some considerably long distances. The group arrived in Paris amid much traffic, in their red MAG tshirts, so that they could cycle together to the Eiffel Tower. It was an extremely challenging event, and although Glenn was determined to do it, and had the stamina, she also knew that some of the men felt the odds were stacked against her - female, old, poor bike, no training. The pre-trip info said training should be built up over 20 weeks, but Glenn's training consisted of ten minutes on the bike at the gym, and pootling around Hadleigh, which hardly stood her in good stead for 560 km. However, now that she can honestly say that she has completed the ride, she is hoping for kind and generous friends and colleagues to sponsor her, in support of the vital work which MAG does. She has a justgiving page - look under 'Friends' for her name, and will gratefully acknowledge all contributions.

Nearly 400 years ago, a ship called ‘Confidence’ departed from Southampton, England and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts on the East Coast of the USA on April 24th 1638 as part of the great migration to the west. A group of settlers from this ship found themselves in an area 20 miles west of Boston and negotiated the purchase of a piece of land which attracted them because of its slow moving river and its rich reed grass which was perfect for fattening cattle and growing crops. One year later on September 4th 1639 this town was named Sudbury, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. In May this year, local business founder directors/owners and Sudbury residents Christopher and Martina Johnson, and their daughter Emma, travelled to Sudbury, Massachusetts, USA and found how similar the two towns are. ‘As we were visiting friends in a nearby town, Bedford MA, we decided to spend a day in Sudbury, explore its’ delights and have lunch in The Wayside Inn, Sudbury’, explains Christopher Johnson pictured here with daughter Emma (aged 14) outside The wayside Inn. Martina added, ‘We were not surprised that these English Settlers found this area so wonderful as it had many of the features of our own Sudbury in Suffolk – river, marshland, grazing which reminded us very much of the fields around the River Stour - and a climate very similar to Suffolk.’ Martina is pictured with friend Kyoko in the common public land in Sudbury reminding her of our own Sudbury, Suffolk. Emma Johnson, who has lived with her parents in Sudbury, Suffolk since 2006 adds: ‘I couldn’t believe how similar it was, and also how many of the surrounding towns were named after English ones. We found Acton, Cambridge, Stow, Shrewsbury, Worcester, Bedford and then there is ‘Framingham’ – which we were told by the locals was derived from our Framlingham in Suffolk but lost the ‘l’ over time! On entry to Sudbury, MA, you pass the sign pictured above confirming that Sudbury in the USA was named after Sudbury in Suffolk. ‘It is an area so similar and British to our Sudbury that we felt very much at home there. It is a bit smaller with a population of around 18,000, but has a Town Centre, a Town Hall, a Parish Church and a Mill and so much the feel of home that Thomas Gainsborough himself would Sudbury Church, MA have felt very much at home there, and certainly would have had lots of subject matter for painting’ enthused Christopher Johnson. Anyone interested in learning more about Sudbury in Massachusetts, USA can contact Martina and Christopher Johnson at christopher@meritas-international.com or visit the Sudbury, Massachusetts website: www.sudbury.ma.us
News from the Garden Personal Thoughts This column is being written about 60% through July with an official Heat Wave declared. I do not think we have had any significant rain at all in July, and the weather forecasts are suggesting that we should not expect any in the next few days. As a result of this situation a lot of plants are suffering, and although we have not got a hosepipe ban it is impossible, and possibly antisocial to use too much water on the garden even if you are paying for it on a meter. At the moment I am watering my vegetables, particularly those like beans that need a lot of water, my soft fruit which is ripening nicely, and a few plants that I like, but probably did not ought to be growing in East Anglia where we can not rely on enough rain to keep soil moist. One can help by mulching with bark, but if you do this make sure the soil is wet before you put the bark down. Hadleigh Open Gardens Day has come and gone. It raised over ÂŁ1000 for the Friends of St Mary's who help with the repair costs of our magnificent church. Seventeen gardens were open, and I managed to visit 11 of them. It would be invidious to nominate a best garden, because gardens are a personal thing and represent what the owner wants for him or her self rather than be planted to satisfy the visitor. I enjoyed all the gardens that I visited, and was particularly impressed with a few of the "features". The timing of the day virtually guaranteed that there would be good displays of roses, but I was surprised at the number of good paeonies that I saw. At 48 George Street tall grasses had been used in a novel and effective way to define an avenue down a lawn. Several of the small gardens were interesting. At New Coram Long Bessels a pleasant enclosed garden has been created with practically everything growing in pots because the previous history of the site meant that the soil was really unusable. Both Hilary Griffin and Tina Haines need congratulating for creating charming gardens in a tiny amount of space. Finally I never thought that I would ever find artificial grass acceptable in a garden, but Roger Young's use of it on the flat roof of his garage which has been built into the slope of his steep garden did seem quite acceptable. He is also collecting the water draining off of it. Weather Records In June at Kersey there were 20.3 mm (0.8") of rain, which is very low, and it all fell after the 11th of the month. In fact that is only 1/4 of what we had in June last year. Th3 3 month figure was 85.5 mm (3.4") which is about 1/2 of the average. I know last year was wet, but this is only 35 % of what we had in the same 3 months last year. In June the maximum temperature was 25 Cel (77F), which is quite typical. The minimum temperature for June was 6 Cel (43F) which is again quite normal. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 20 Cel (68F), which equals the highest value that I had previously recorded which was in June 2006. One hopes that the weather will be beautiful, and one can simply cut the lawns, start to pick some apples and enjoy the garden. It is too late to sow seeds of many things, but there are a few seeds that one can sow if they appeal to you. Amongst the vegetables there are three groups that can be sown :(a) Root vegetables like winter radish and turnips. These will easily grow big enough to eat during the Winter. (b) Spring cabbage to eat as Spring greens or heads ahead of Greyhound in the Spring. (c) Chinese vegetables which grow very quickly and run to seed if you plant them too early. In this group I am including things like Chinese cabbage, Pak Choi, and Mizuna. With good weather these will last up to December. Dead head flowering plants. This not only keeps them looking good, but it encourages them to produce more flowers. If you like large blooms it is worth pinching out some of the side buds on dahlias, and on varieties of hybrid tea roses that tend to produce bunches of smaller flowers rather than nice big ones at the end of the season. Hedges have been growing and most will need a trim in August. I hope that the Summer weather continues, but we also get a worthwhile amount of rain too many plants in my garden are really suffering. Good Gardening, John Rye

Business as usual Have you ever watched ants at work? Amid apparent chaos they all know what they are doing and unite to get the job done. That is a good description of life at Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare over the last month. I've never seen the humans so busy as a long term plan to refurbish the cat accommodation is finally coming to fruition. Our volunteers deserve a massive thank you for all their sterling work and for preparing for the Fete which will be over by the time you read this. Another example of long term planning was the Leavenheath Open Gardens on 23rd June. Congratulations to Phil Goodyer and his team for a successful event and thank you for donating £600 to SESAW. Our next fundraising event is a Craft Sale at Leavenheath Village Hall on Saturday 10th August from midday to 3pm. As usual, we have many animals awaiting re homing, including Harry the Lurcher. He is very sad because his owner died and he fears no-one will want a thirteen and a half year old dog. It would be ideal if someone local (with no cats) could offer him a nice quiet foster home. Bustifer, the large black and white cat who is bigger than me, is still with us. I mentioned him in my June news and thought someone would snap him up as he is quite a character - for a cat! It's a dog's life for me so I'm off to supervise putting up the bunting but someone will have to find a step ladder for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua

First, Fitness and Endurance! Hadleigh Swimming Club has been very busy during the summer season, the junior squad travelled to Deben Swimming Pool for the final of the Summer League 2013 and came first and also won the Title of Best Supported Club, support for each other was great and certainly the noisiest club there. The club would like to thank Alex and Maria for their help on the evening, and a big thank you to Finlay Kirk and Isobel Field (Team Captains), Adam Morsman, Charlie Clarke, Molly Evans and Emily May for their years with the Junior Squad as they will now be competing with the Senior Sqaud. The Dolphins held a land based training day in June at Hadleigh Community Primary School with a local fitness instructor (Andi), three hours of fitness training followed by a discussion about nutrition and race preparation. A big thank you to Andi, the school and Alex and Jackie from the club for organising a fun day of learning which everyone who attended really enjoyed.

(01473) 827827 The endurance part of the story came from two brave swimmers, Finlay Kirk and William white who attended the East Region Open Championships at Whitlingham Lake nr Norwich. The outside temperature was a fresh 17 degrees centigrade and the water temperature (22 degrees), so with the ruling of no wetsuits the boys were happy ! They entered a heat of 30 swimmers and all scrambled for a place in the pack at the start of the race, they both completed the 800 m around the lake. In their age group Finlay came 3rd with a time of 13.12 mins and Will came 4th in 14.11 mins. The event was very well organised by the Amateur Swimming Association and the club hope to take many more swimmers with them next year. Finally a big thank you from all the swimmers for the dedication of the Coaches and the HSC Committee members who have made it such a great club to belong to.

Barry James was on hand to welcome 17 lady golfers back to his local course after they had raised more than £1,000 in memory of this late wife. Golfer Yvonne James recently lost her fight against cancer, and members of Newton Green, where she played, decided to commemorate her passing by taking part in the recent cancer fundraising Race for Life at Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds. Barry, who lived with his wife in a home overlooking the course, attended a lunch at the golfer’s club house to pay tribute to those that had walked the five kilometre course.

Hadleigh Bowling Club The start of the 2013 outdoor season got off to a quiet start mainly due to the effects of the cold spring on the newly laid green which meant that we did all our bowling away from the Stone street club until the end of June. However with a great deal of effort from our “green team” the green is now bowling very well and with our newly laid floor in the club house we intent to see the season out with a bang. On Sunday September 1 we are having a Charity Roll Up and Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Nurses and Help the Heroes. The event is open to all so if you fancy a go at bowling or just a cup of coffee and a chat in aid of 2 good causes, please come along we would be delighted to see you. Tuesday September 3 sees us entertain a Humberside Presidents touring team which from past experiences of touring teams should be a lot of fun. We follow that with a Hadleigh Open Bowls Tournament on Saturday 7 September which is open to all once again. The format is 3 wood triples with an entry fee of £16 per team and a prize of £100 to the winners (subject to the number of entries). The competition will be all day, playing in mini leagues with each game being of 8 ends. Food will be available if required as well as the bar. Entry forms are available from the club or from our captain Peter Miller on 01473 823852. Our Club Finals Day is on Saturday 14 September and even if you are not participating it is always worth seeing these keenly contested and usually close encounters between some of the best bowlers in the club. We close our 2013 outdoor season on Saturday 21 September with a ladies v men match which will be fancy dress with a theme of Rock n Roll. The bowling will be followed by a BBQ and Music Night. During the winter we continue to bowl indoors at the club with 2 league teams and for the first time this coming winter we will hold inter club leagues. In addition we try to arrange a social event at least once a month. So if you fancy any of the above events or are looking to play the less physically demanding short mat indoor game during the winter you will be made very welcome. Please give Peter a call and he will put you in touch with the right club member for the event that you are interested in.

Edwardstone Cricket Club Edwardstone CC is an approachable welcoming club for all players of all levels we currently play in the Hunts County Bats Division Three Sunday league. We are always looking for new players to join our team why not come and have a go read our latest report below to find out more. We are halfway through the season. So far we have been able to play all our matches the weather has been good for the weekends. It has been an encouraging seeing many of the younger players getting better as the season gets older gaining more experience. We haven’t had that much luck this year only with two wins this season to date against Leavenheath CC with an impressive batting display from the skipper Jack Clark 144 not out after 40 overs and a very good team effort at Thurston CC to bowl them out needing 10 runs from the last 5 overs.
