EPIC TREK FOR CHRIS COMPLETED As you would have heard from the front cover of the December edition, the family of Chris Corder, who was critically injured in a severe hit and run incident on September 27th 2009, were in the process of planning a ‘Walk for Chris’ to help raise funds for his future care and rehabilitation. We are pleased to say that we have completed this epic 90 miles journey over the Christmas period. We began on 27th December at 7am and walked from dawn till dusk for 3 days and then from dawn until 2pm on the 30th December when we arrived at The Royal London Hospital. During day 1 we walked a total of 23 miles from Hadleigh to Coggeshall making steady progress in the morning passing through plenty of mud on The Essex Way footpath especially in the afternoon. Day 2 we followed a route close to The Essex Way from Coggeshall to Willingale (Between Chelmsford and Ongar) and made significant progress walking 27 miles due to the beneficial conditions. Day 3 followed Essex Way and Three Forests Way from Willingale to Hainault via Ongar and over the M25. The weather did turn for the worse with ankle deep mud for 6 miles in the afternoon. We managed to walk 24 miles which was a fantastic achievement considering the weather. Finally on Day 4 we walked the final 16 miles from Hainault to The Royal London Hospital via Ilford and Stratford. Continued page 8

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard with Poppy and his miniature dachshunds

I am glad that so many of you were delighted by my last picture. Several of you got in touch to say that the lamp looked like one from Narnia. Whilst followers of my column will know that I do get around, it was in fact in the grounds of my mother and father’s home. The lamp was a wedding anniversary present from me some years ago. Another reader enquired about my camel overcoat. That was a little something I came across in New York and I had a mink collar fitted at the furriers Nobles in London. The picture shows me with Poppy – a 1935 Austin 7 Ruby in red with black wings. She really is a sweet little car and one of course misses the mod-cons; there is not even a heater. The Austin 7 was a great success story for Austin and was built as a seven horsepower to fall below tax thresholds – dreadful things affecting larger cars all that time ago. I know that you are always keen to see pictures of my miniature dachshunds and here I have my hands full. My newest recruit is Tilly and she turned a year old on 10 January. Tilly, Mitzi and Heidi all get along together very well. I love them all very much. One does rely upon good health and one takes it so much for granted. A little before Christmas I had an intense pain in the joint of one of my big toes. The Doctor told me that he thought that I was suffering from gout and I have now had an attack in my other big toe. I do feel for all of you who bear various painful ailments. Apparently, this is an illness that afflicts certain of us; over-indulgence is a complete misnomer! If you have any recommended cure then do let me know. If you are considering the purchase of a property please do give me a call to discuss matters. I will be able to give you a good steer on queries that you may have. There are so many different and competing interests that can exist in one parcel of land at the same time; it is important to consult with someone who has a long and wide experience. A transaction will run so much quicker and smoothly if one prepares and gathers together papers (particularly planning and building regulations certificates, documentation for replacement windows and such like) at an early stage.

Steve Hunt, Rosemary Grimsey, Bob Grimsey, Emma Hunt, Stuart Hunt, Jennie Corder As each hour and day passed our joints and muscles ached more and more as all the walkers pushed themselves to the limits at various points in the walk. However the pain we went through will not compare to the pain that Chris is suffering and the pain he will suffer when he comes out of a coma. Finally I would like to thank the walkers, drivers and backup personnel who helped make the walk go very smoothly. But most important thanks to the people and businesses of Hadleigh and the local area who have helped this worthy cause by donating to the fund, sponsoring the walkers, having collection On route near Ongar boxes and posters based in their business and for the various events held around Hadleigh which have had proceeds donated to The Chris Corder Fund. So far we are very pleased with the sum we have raised and this does not include the great work of St Mary’s Church who have also raised a significant amount through their own fund. We are heading for one final push of the fundraising campaign which will continue to the end of February so please keep doing what you can to help. Thank you Stuart Hunt Chris’s nephew and Walk Organiser

Remembering Saady’s

The Cock Inn Polstead

The shop was owned by Mr & Mrs Saady. Also their daughter worked there. Some of the girls I worked with were, Diane Ramplin (Spraggons), Ann Coupland (Shirley), Susan Hines, Jackie Frost (Goodchild), Eileen Stenten (Harvey), Molly Leathers and Marion Marsh. Mrs Simpson worked in the office and June Scase worked as the cleaner. We all got on very well together. I remember Saady’s very well, as at the age of 13 Mr Saady gave me an after school and Saturday job. The shop was devided into 3 departments. The one nearest to Lloyd’s Bank was haberdashery, hosiery, wool, linens, dress and curtain materials. The middle department was ladies wear and hats, and the end department was ladies underwear and childrens wear. Those were the day’s when you could get everything in Hadleigh. Also I remember someone always had to sweep the paths and wipe the windowsills down every morning, you never see that today. Myself and the girls use to serve customers and take pride in our work, it was a good friendly shop. Mr Saady would come out at about 5.45 every Saturday and give his staff stockings or tights for all their hard work. At 6pm you would see all the boys with their cars lined up outside Saady’s waiting to pick up their girlfriends. Mr & Mrs Saady sold the shop, which was taken over by Winch & Blatch of Sudbury who I then carried on working for. Marguerite Willis (Russo)

SWINE FLU VACCINATIONS Patients with Diabetes, Heart, Lung, Kidney Disease, Pregnant women and all children aged 6mths to under 5 years are eligible to have this vaccine. We will be holding sessions at

The Health Centre on: Thursday 4th, 11th,18th February 2 pm - 6 pm Thursday 4th, 11th, 18th March 2pm-6pm

Have you ever seen a bobbin lace demonstration at one of the local fairs and fetes, and wished you could have a go? Have you acquired any of those small pieces of turned wood or bone, decorated with beads at the end, and wondered how they were used? Would you like to make decorative and beautiful articles of bobbin lace? If so, help is at hand! If you can count to four, you can make lace! Carol Adkinson – a qualified Tutor in Bobbin Lace and Fine Handicrafts - runs private classes in Hadleigh High School, in Highlands Road, Hadleigh, Suffolk, on a Tuesday evening, from 7.15pm to 9.15pm. The classes are for all ages, and cover all types of bobbin lace, and as they are private, there are fewer students in the class than are demanded by the LEA – which means that each student receives far more individual attention than in the Local Education classes. However, as well as the weekly classes, Carol runs day-workshops in local halls etc. for groups of people to suit their convenience, and also one-to-one classes in the student’s or in Carol’s home, whichever is more convenient. Carol also teaches a monthly class, on a Saturday, for children from approximately eight years to fifteen years. Possibly unique in the area, Carol has all the necessary equipment to loan to students until they can purchase their own, and students frequently surprise themselves by how quickly they learn the basics of the craft. Students can also learn the history of the craft, if they so wish, and can also join local, national and international groups of lacemakers, and visit museums where collections of lace are held. Carol has been making bobbin lace for nearly thirty years and teaching for about fifteen. In that time, she has attended many workshops, residential courses and seminars to further her lace-making knowledge, and has also gained the City and Guilds Teaching Certificate to enhance her teaching skills. She also realises that, for many people, evening classes are time away from domestic cares and pressures, so although students can work towards formal qualifications such as the Lace Guild’s assessments and City & Guilds qualifications, there is no pressure to do this – excellence is what is aimed for, NOT yardage, but above all, Lace-Making is FUN. Because the classes are private, you can start at any time during the term so, if you are interested, do give Carol a ring on Hadleigh (01473) 810160 – she will be pleased to give you details of this friendly and happy class, will have a lace pillow set up ready for use for you, and introduce you to the wonderful world of Bobbin Lace Making. Carol Adkinson

Prezzo’s for Fidelis Lunch Bunch If the number of enthusiastic diners gets any larger the Fidelis Lunch Bunch will have to consider a name change to the Culinary Crowd. Our chosen venue was Prezzo’s in Sudbury. Seems, Greg, the manager there, knows a thing or two about ladies lunch groups as he had very kindly accommodated us in a large upstairs room. The room is dominated by ancient exposed timbers and ultra modern David Hockney posters both of which look quite at home side by side in this interesting old Sudbury building. The group took advantage of the fortnightly voucher on the company’s website which offered a two course meal with a drink for £10.00. Although Prezzo is part of chain of Italian restaurants throughout Britain the food is freshly sourced and cooked, attractively served and hot. Portions were so generous that even the most dedicated dessert eaters had to abandon the idea of a sweet. There was plenty of light-hearted chatter punctuated by commercials for up and coming Fidelis events. Jan Devey

Then why not help the Hospice If you have updated your three-piece suite or dining table and chairs in the New Year sales, then why not let St Elizabeth Hospice have your old one. Donations of good quality furniture are urgently needed to resell and raise funds for the Hospice, which costs £5.9million a year to run. If you have any unwanted Christmas presents they would also be gratefully received. The Hospice’s shops needs toys, clothes, bric-a-brac, CDs, DVDs, books and jewellery to keep the shelves well stocked. Fiona Browning, the Hospice’s retail sales manager, said: “We are in urgent need of furniture as it is selling very well at the moment and will come and collect it if it is suitable. “Our shop would also welcome unwanted Christmas presents or second hand goods you may no longer need because they have been replaced by something you received at Christmas.” Funds raised through the shops enable St Elizabeth Hospice, which is based in Foxhall Road, Ipswich, to continue to make a real difference to the lives of their patients and families, friends and carers. Hadleigh during 2009 The Hadleigh Local History Recorder noted various items during 2009. The New Year began with the bells of St. Mary's Church ringing amid various fireworks being let off around the town. The shop Bohemian Dreams in the Market Place closed, and Moss Chemists on the corner of Duke Street closed to reopen as Boots. Unleaded fuel at Lady Lane Garage cost 89.9p per litre. Snow fell in early February causing travel problems, resulting in the Hadleigh schools closing, and followed a week later by day long rain resulting in the River Brett bursting its banks, especially opposite the Babergh District Council offices, and at Stone Street. The Barber Stop opens in the Market Place while in the High Street Suffolk Saddles closed to open later as Nevelli, suppliers of radiators. Further changes were the reopening of The Mens Room, Katies Sandwiches took over from Greens, while nearby The Jolly Meat Company opened. The Donkey Restaurant opened in May. There was disruption for traffic from June in part of Magdalen Road opposite the main town car park, to allow for improvement works to the road surface. On the 23rd of the month the Reverend Martin Thrower was inducted by the Bishop of St. Edmundsbury and Ipwich as Rector of Hadleigh, with Layham and Shelley. Into July and there was a military parade through the town marking the towns friendship with the Army at Wattisham Airfield, organised by the Town Council, termed the Bond of Friendship. A new Dental Surgery opened in Meadows Way, and a Sunday Car Boot sale venue began in Pond Hall Road. Building work got underway for the new Hadleigh Fire Station in Calais Street close to the river in August. Further chanes to some shops were a name change from Tooks to Greggs, and Mr Hymas moves his upholstery across the road to the recently vacated flower shop which became incorporated within the Plum Tree premises. As September began so the Magdalen Road enhancement work was completed. The town was shocked by a 'hit and run' incident at Benton Street which left Mr Corder with serious injuries. A Friday night 'Porch Evening' began for young people at St. Mary's and the URC held a 'Peace is' exhibition. A area of facing masonry to the stair turret at St. Mary's church fell in October, to be followed by a further fall in November requiring a barrier to be positioned for safety purposes. Towards the winter there were more changes to the shops, Crumbs bakers in Long Bessels closed, Threshers in the High Street closed when the national chain failed, and Sweet Memories opened where a previous confectioners had been. The Mill Pharmacy opened in the Hadleigh Health Centre. As Chrismas approached unleaded fuel at Lady Lane was £1.07.9p a litre. On Friday 18th of December approximately three to four inches of snow fell causing travel disruption, no newspapers came to the town and there were no postal deliveries. This snow was to be a prelude to a cold spell which lasted to the end of the year. The History Recorder, Roger Kennell, is aware that the above is only a brief record of some Hadleigh items during 2009. He would welcome any additions which can be added for the annual report sent to the Suffolk Local History Council.

At the time of going to print, we have been made aware that Tesco have submitted new designs for a proposed store on the Brett Works site and that the revised planning application is expected be considered by Babergh’s Development Committee in the Spring. As soon as a date is confirmed, we shall call upon all of our supporters to illustrate that there remains widespread and resolute concern about the choice of site, located within the River Brett corridor and adjacent to a nature reserve on Broom Hill. There are many residents in Hadleigh and surrounding villages who are deeply concerned about the impact upon the wildlife and the neighbouring Bridge Street allotments, as well as the safety and access implications, the increased traffic and pollution, flooding risks and the threat to independent retailers in the town. If you would like to lend your support to Hands Off Hadleigh, please visit www.hands-off-hadleigh.co.uk or drop into The Idler, 37 High Street, Hadleigh, call (01473) 827752 or email bryan@theidler.plus.com.

Hoopy New Year?

For many of us the start of a new year brings with it a renewed determination to get fit or lose weight. How many of us are thinking we must? The trouble is, getting fit and losing weight can be a long, hard, boring slog. For Hadleigh residents, however, it doesn’t have to be like that. Hula hoop classes take place every Tuesday evening in the Guildhall at 6.30 and 7.30 pm and are perfect for anyone in the town wanting to get fit, toned or trim. Many people think of hooping as a children’s activity. But modern hooping is anything but; it is a serious but fun way of getting fit and losing weight – so much so that hooping is now sweeping the world as the hottest thing in fitness. And no wonder: it burns an amazing 600 calories an hour, it tones all the major muscle groups and it improves fitness levels as effectively as a really tough workout in a gym. Perhaps, more importantly, it is fantastic fun to do. Local girl Amanda Morris (known professionally as Hula Girl) is one of the county’s leading hoop instructors and performers. Her enthusiasm for hooping is infectious. She makes it fun to learn. And she patiently guides all her students through a series of classes designed to take them from complete beginner to a competent hooper as quickly and as if they wondering ever will up effectively as possible. “A lot of people turn

be able to hoop, she says. “But everyone can hoop when they are shown has fun trying. And just about everyone the right technique. Everyone

up ends with enough skills to amaze themselves – and their friends!

Raising money for Addenbrookes PICU My mum always told me that to say Thank you costs nothing, in this case she’s wrong. Thank you will cost me 5 months of hard work aching muscles and possibly a very sore bottom! But it will seem like a very small price to pay. Two and a half years ago my son Harrison was born at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge. Having suffered from Obstetric Cholestasis in the last few months (a liver condition that can affect women and their unborn child in pregnancy) we were relieved that he was born fit and well. Six weeks later Harrison contracted a viral infection and was rushed into hospital. He was admitted to Paediatric Intensive care as he was showing signs of being unable to breath whilst his body was fighting the infection. The staff were amazing and the hospital offered us a place to stay on site at Acorn House which allows parents whose children are on the PICU unit a place to rest and still be close to their child. Harrison made a great recovery and came home two weeks later. We have made many trips since then back to Addenbrookes but he was finally discharged in April 2009 on his second birthday. This summer my youngest niece Imogen was rushed into Bury St Edmunds hospital suffering from Meningitis. She was put on a ventilator and transferred to Addenbrookes via ambulance. Again the staff on the PICU ward were fantastic and not only took care of my niece but my sister and brother in law too. They too were given a place in Acorn house to stay close to their daughter. Imogen has recovered well and appears to have suffered no long term affects. Today we have a two and half and a three and half year old running around our houses driving us mad. But we know how lucky we are to have them. Without the care of the PICU staff at Addenbrookes things could have been very different. And that brings me to saying Thank you. The only way I can show my appreciation and thank them for saving our children’s lives is to raise some money so they can continue to help others. In May 2010 I will be participating in a sponsored cycle ride from London to Paris. We leave London on the 5th of May and arrive in Paris on the 8th. I am looking to raise £1500 pounds to say Thank you to an amazing hospital and staff. We have set up a Just giving site where you can make a safe online donation directly to the charity. The web address is www.justgiving.com/LorasCrazyBikeRide4Addenbrookes-PICU or just search Just Giving and enter Lora Caie. Cheque or cash donations can be sent to 11 Windings Road Elmsett IP7 6QE Thank you for listening, Lora Caie

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre “February fill ditch black or white, if it’s white it’s better to like” or so goes an old Suffolk saying. Well, I think white is better to like and as most of you now know, I’m not a real hairy hoof like the rest of the Herd but, a Mechanical Horse and thus can both admire and appreciate the beauty of the changing snow scene from the comfort of my warm room. Most likely the real horses and the people will not agree on this one. At least if it’s black it’s much easier to eat the grass or travel even though it’s gloomy. However, this is where my older sister BABS (The other Mechanical Horse) and I come into our own; if the Riders are able to get to the Centre, which we know from our recent experience is not always possible because of accessibility problems caused by the extreme weather conditions, we are still able to offer “Rides” even if there is snow or rain outside. To many of our Riders a visit to the Shelley Centre is a very important occasion during their week taking them away from their routine environment into something totally different. It is a chance to meet different people, particularly their Helpers, as well as other people working at the Centre and, last but not least, other Riders who might also be at the Centre. It is also an opportunity to have some fun whilst at the same time enjoying the serious benefit of therapies to improve mobility and co-ordination, build up muscle or just take some time out of a wheel chair and see a different perspective of life; even when the weather is inclement, and BABS and I are kept very busy, the Riders will still get a chance to meet the Horses and Ponies which they would normally ride and thus maintain that very important bond between animal and human; something, in spite of our extensive features, BABS and I cannot offer. Some of you reading this may have thought about doing something different in the New Year as well as perhaps looking at ways to help others. As you may now understand, come snow, rain or shine, the work at the Shelley Centre mostly goes on and we are always looking for volunteers to train as Helpers to enable our Riders to get the most from their visit. “Twenty Ten” might be the year when one of those Helpers is you? Look me up on the Website or telephone the Centre; there is never a better time than now…… go on…… do it! I know Christmas is now but a far off memory however, I have a couple of things to remind you of the event. In the first instance, the winner of the Shelley Centre Christmas Cake Hamper Raffle was a member of the Stour Valley Choral Society and the other is that I have found some jokes from someone’s Christmas cracker; here’s one to start with “Why don’t Robots have brothers? Because they all have trans-sisters”……….Well, I liked it? Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473.824172

Council Survey and Police support Residents claims Residents of Benton Street are delighted. A recent traffic survey by Suffolk County Council has supported their claims. It is hoped that the survey data will now help achieve a 20 mph limit and improved HGV signage along the B1070. Residents have long campaigned for road improvements along the B1070. They argue that vehicles and HGVs ignore speed and weight limits. Pedestrians and listed houses are put at risk as a result. Police confirm that not one prosecution for speeding or weight limit violations has been made in the last seven years. They promise enforcement in the future. A detailed report was prepared by the Benton Street Interest Group in December 2008. It was sent to Suffolk County, Babergh District and Hadleigh Town Councils. Residents wanted improved HGV signage; a 20 mph speed limit with a speed activated warning sign; bollards and a chicane to protect pedestrians. In December 2009 Councillor Pembroke, Leader of Suffolk County Council met with some residents. They voiced their frustrations on lack of action. He promised an immediate review and initiated a speed data collection survey. The survey shows over a quarter of vehicles exceed the speed limit and that many long vehicles travel along Benton Street. Roger Young, a Benton Street resident said At last the views of residents are being addressed by the relevant Councils and the Police. It is a shame that we had to lobby the Leader of Suffolk County Council to produce results but normal channels proved ineffective. Roger Young

Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society is holding its Annual General Meeting in the Ansell Community Centre (URC) in Hadleigh at 7:30pm on Wednesday 17th February 2010. Member and non-members are invited to attend. Due to the need to address some very important issues concerning the future of HADS, on this occasion we will start with a Special General Meeting to be immediately followed by the Annual General Meeting. HADS, like most amateur dramatic societies, is facing some serious challenges. Memberships are falling, audiences have more demands on their time and the recession is still causing many people to cut back on their leisure activities; production costs are rising and venue hire is becoming more and more expensive. To address these issues and to ensure that HADS continues as a successful and relevant organisation, major changes to the way HADS is run and what it does for its members and audiences are necessary, hence the title “A Blueprint for Survival”. This year HADS is 90 years old and we must do all we can to ensure that it continues so that we can celebrate 100 years in 2020. To help us achieve this please come along to hear what we are planning and to give your input and feedback. On the positive side, HADS is in excellent financial condition thanks to full houses at our 2008 and 2009 productions and we have new and exciting plans for 2010. If you are an existing member of HADS, come and share your views, vote in the AGM and renew your membership. If you are not a member, come along anyway to hear about our plans future, join our electronic mailing list for the HADS Newsletter and perhaps even become a member. Peter Finch 01473 824033

Snow doesn’t stop play at Stoke! The weather may have got the better of most golf clubs over the past few weeks but at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, the golf has moved indoors! The resourceful staff at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club have transformed the squash court into an indoor practice area comprising of two full-sized practise nets, a chipping net and a putting surface. Matt Manning, the Hardy members enjoy sledging Director of Golf & Leisure at on the course Stoke by Nayland commented, “Our members were getting so frustrated that the snow had stopped play for so long, that we decided to take matters into our own hands. The indoor nets have proved to be very popular with the members and it has given the more committed golfers an opportunity to keep their swing working”. The indoor practise area has also allowed the teaching staff to continue giving lessons without having to battle the cold. Not only has the practise area moved indoors, one of the club’s four professionals, Shane Constable, has set up a 9 hole putting area in the Devora Suite. Normally reserved for weddings and gala dinners for up to 300, the Devora Suite is also the perfect size for a challenging mini course! Manning said “The temporary course has gone down really well with the members - in particular the numerous swindles here. They have spent hours on the putting course trying to out-score one another! What’s great about the indoor golf set up is that it gives the members a reason to come to the Putting practise in the Devora Suite club and catch up with their regular fourball”. For those members still young at heart the rolling hills of the Constable Course, once an Everest to the fatigued golfer, became perfect sledging terrain. For the hardiest of members, the Stoke by Nayland staff provided old service trays and off they went to relive their youth. Manning said, “The weather is having a devastating effect on golf clubs up and down the country and every effort is being made at Stoke by Nayland to not only keep the members enjoying recreational activities here, but also to keep the social aspect of the club alive during this cold Driving practice in the squash court period”.

Overweight face a ‘catalogue of discrimination’ in the workplace, shows survey Overweight people are missing out on jobs because employers assume they are ‘lazy’, ‘lack self control’ and are ‘not hard workers’, according to a survey by Slimming World and YouGov. When people who are very overweight do get a job they are twice as likely to earn a low salary, four times more likely to suffer bullying about their weight and six times more likely to feel their appearance has caused them to be overlooked for promotion, the survey of 2,000 people revealed. In addition, while one in three people who are obese admit they feel like ‘second class citizens’, data from the survey’s 227 bosses shows that they’re right to fear discrimination – particularly from male employers. One in four male bosses say they would turn down a potential candidate based purely on their weight and one in 10 admit they have already done so. Slimming World Man of the Year Roberto Enrieu, who lost an incredible 25 stone on the plan, was let go from his job as an IT consultant because his weight meant he ‘didn’t fit the company image’. “My confidence was shattered and as a very overweight person looking for work I was faced with a huge amount of prejudice,” he says. “When you carry that extra weight into interviews you take with it negative connotations that can be difficult to shake off. I lost all confidence in myself because, as good as my CV was, employers weren’t interested in working with someone of my size. It was only when I joined Slimming World and benefitted from the support of my group that my confidence improved and my career began to thrive.” The survey found that people in the highest weight category (BMI 40+) are four times more likely than healthy weight people to ‘never’ feel confident and twice as likely to dread applying for a new job. Dr Jacquie Lavin, Slimming World’s Head of Nutrition and Research, says: “You need confidence and support to achieve success in anything, whether it’s losing weight or climbing the career ladder. That’s why we place as much emphasis on helping slimmers to improve their self-esteem as we do on supporting them to make healthy food choices. “It’s unfortunate that only 16 per cent of people who are obese feel supported by their work colleagues in their efforts to lose weight and disappointing that one in four say they have suffered negative comments about their weight while at work. “This survey provides one of the greatest indications yet of the scale of obesity discrimination in the workplace. Yet support is available for people who do want to make a change. Our Slimming World groups place great emphasis on helping members to increase their self-esteem, confidence and self-belief and the majority of members who successfully lose weight go on to achieve success in other areas of their lives too: from leaving dead end jobs to pursue their career dreams to climbing mountains or running marathons. Roberto has become a kayak instructor since losing 25 stone, something he would never have had the confidence to do before.”

Our theme for this half term is Snow and Ice – very appropriate given the weather at the start of January. The children have truly embraced this topic and have chosen some wonderful things to bring in and talk about for show and tell. We have seen many penguins and other cold creatures. Everyone has been busy at the arts and craft table creating snowy pictures, such as foot prints with lots of white paint and glitter and some Antarctic scenes of penguins on the ice. We will be taking part in World Book Day on March 4th, when we celebrate the wealth of brilliant books for young people. Children may come dressed up as their favourite character from a book or bring in the book if they prefer. We are looking forward to sharing our favourite stories. We would like to offer sincere thanks to Councillor Grutchfield for his kind donation, with which we have bought some new tables and chairs and some new ride-ons. All the children have had lots of fun playing with the new trikes. Our next Open Day takes place on February 22nd from 9:30am - 12 noon. Current and prospective parents and children are welcome to come and take part in the activities, enjoy some refreshments, and have a chat to staff, committee members and parents. Many thanks to all parents for patience while playgroup was closed at the beginning of term due to snow. If you have any questions or would like to arrange a visit, please phone Rachel on 01473 822647 or e-mail us at hadleighcommunityplaygroup@googlemail.com

News from The Station Welcome to the latest news from Hadleigh Police Station. Following the recent Neighbourhood Panel Meeting at the Town Hall, the three Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Team priorities are: 1. Target anti-social and illegal use of motorcycles in Bobbits Lane, Belstead, and Bourne Hill Wherstead on Sunday afternoons. 2. Crime Prevention at Elton Park and disused Geest factory site. 3. Vehicles mounting the pavement, large lorries and coaches using this route causing danger to pedestrians in Benton Street, Hadleigh. As mentioned in last months article, residents in the Benton Street were surveyed regarding traffic problems. We received an excellent response & would like to thank all those people who took the time to complete the questionnaire. To summarize the results: • 91% felt that lorries exceeding the 7.5 tonne weight restriction was the main problem. • We have also been asked to concentrate on the speed of vehicles particularly between 7-9am & 4-6pm • Residents were also concerned about vehicles mounting/parking on the pavement & Illegal parking For full details of the results please see our website www.safersuffolk.org.uk/eastbabergh We would like to point out that since the survey we have issued 12 verbal cautions for speeding, 4 endorsable tickets for speeding, 3 for illegal parking & 3 tickets for exceeding the weight limit. We will continue to work with partner agencies and focus our efforts in this area. The next neighbourhood panel meeting is on Wednesday 17th February 2010 at 7.30pm, in the Methodist Church, Capel St Mary. HADLEIGH CHARACTERS Geoff Wilding Geoff Wilding has lived in Hadleigh since marrying his wife, Molly, in 1968. A painter and decorator by trade, Geoff has shown interest in amateur dramatics since childhood. He is an active member of the Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society of forty years standing, a period over which he has brought pleasure to countless members of our community. Geoff was born in 1943 on a farm in Whatfield, in one of two adjacent cottages. One morning, shortly before his birth, a German doodlebug exploded nearby, shaking the ancient cottages, “The place next door to ours collapsed in a heap but, thankfully, nobody was hurt.” Geoff credits Gwen Dunn, rather than the doodlebug, for his early interest in dramatics, “For me it really started when Gwen came to Hadleigh with her husband, after the war, and became the head of Whatfield Primary School. She was young, bright and vivacious. She had a love of theatre, literally transformed the school, and immediately began to put on shows. She persuaded the BBC to record part of ‘Rumplestiltskin’ for a BBC Schools Programme. Whatfield had very little traffic in those days and I vividly remember four huge black vehicles coming down the street bearing the recording equipment and technicians. I have never forgotten the memory. Gwen certainly awoke in me a life interest in theatre, for which I am ever grateful. I was about nine at the time and took the lead in both ‘Rumplestiltskin’ and ‘Pied Piper of Hamelin”. Later on, Geoff said, following the death of his father and, later still, the loss of his elder brother in a motor bike accident - his mother moved to Ipswich. About that time, aged 18, Geoff found work in Hadleigh with James Faithfull and Sons and again came in contact with Gwen Dunn who was then involved with HADS putting on a Chinese Fantasy Play. She asked him and a friend to act as ‘Property Men,’ which meant “clearing the stage between acts, changing scenery and that sort of thing. No speech, but we enjoyed it very much. Then, later, Gwen put on a Noel Coward play, ‘Hay Fever’. It portrayed a brother and sister, I played the brother and the part of the sister was filled by the now famous painter Maggie Hambling. She was about sixteen at the time. Maggie and I seemed to hit it off. We have remained friends ever since. A versatile person, she ended up writing a few books as well.” Asked about interests apart from acting, Geoff said he had always been keen on football as a teenager. He played for Hadleigh in the Suffolk Senior League when they won the cup at Portman Road. He also enjoys walking and caravan holidays but, from 1970, when the Hadleigh Drama Society put on a musical, he began an association with the Society, “It has lasted ever since, forty years Geoff plays Fagin in Oliver 24

this year. I soon found I am not much of a serious play person. I prefer comedy parts.” Geoff said the 70’s and 80’s were good years for dramatics. amateur Membership climbed, “We were able to mount shows far more frequently than now. We did ‘The King and I,’ ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and several others. In the 80’s we moved towards more pantomime. We were able to do so because we had more members, including several prepared to go a bit over the top in taking Geoff as a pantomime dame on comedy parts. Pantomime is hard work but, if the interest is there, it doesn’t seem to be so, more like fun. It was then I started playing the dame and nobody other than me in Hadleigh has played the pantomime dame since 1988.” Geoff said the part of Fagin in ‘Oliver,’ which he played in 2001, is the best possible part to play. It is, he enthused, the ultimate, a gift part, fantastic for showing off virtuosity, “I enjoyed it more than I can say and was delighted with audience response. A chap wrote to the Hadleigh Community News after seeing the show and commented with something like ‘If ever London wants a Fagin I can give them a name, Geoff Wilding of Hadleigh!’ Another chap sent me a photograph of myself in the part of Fagin. He was the father of one of the children in the show. I keep it in the front hall just to show off!” Geoff estimated 80 odd children and adults auditioned for ‘Oliver.’ The selected cast neared 50. Similar numbers, he said, prevailed into the early 80’s. Remembering the rise in population since, one would expect more people now, not less, to show an interest. But the reverse has occurred, he said. This was probably because newcomers to Hadleigh generally work far-a-field. Late evening all they want is to sit quietly at home. It is increasingly difficult to put on any show of real significance calling for a fair sized cast. I hope your article encourages new members to come forward.” Geoff continued, “The exception is Hadleigh Juniors. In the late 90’s I wondered why more kids were not involved in theatre and advocated a scheme to attract them. There was some opposition to this within the society, but I persevered and was encouraged in my views by Rachel Bennett and Sue Double, both of whom had expertise in dealing with children. When they left Hadleigh others helped. As time went on young members attracted in the 90’s moved forward into adult membership. In short, the scheme went well.” Asked about rivalries with the Drama Society, Geoff said such existed in all organisations, but seemed more pronounced amongst the gentle sex! He became aware of a three-way female rivalry which settled after the ladies concerned decided to take it in turns to fill the lead part in successive shows. He tended to lose himself in the character he was trying to portray and sometimes missed the obvious, “I do, however, remember a crisis one dress rehearsal night: a female performer refused to wear a hat, part of her costume as called for in the play, because she reckoned it did not suit her looks! It caused pandemonium. No names, no pack-drill? Geoff said the drama society has about 20 adult members now and needs more. It was easy enough getting 30 or 40 children if a show called for such numbers, in pantomimes for instance, and it was wonderful working with the young. Children were usually a little shy to start with but soon threw themselves in the mechanics of a show with complete abandon. “Attracting adults is a more difficult matter. There has to be some unrecognised acting talent in Hadleigh if only we can harness it. Currently we aim at two shows a year. Any increase will call for aspiring adults to make themselves known.” Asked what he looked for in an actor or actress, Geoff said a major requirement would be for a person to be a bit f an extrovert: enjoy a pat on the back and like a bit of applause. “Even more important is an ability to understand the emotions of the character to be represented and the skill to get it across in a true to life manner.” Asked which shows he most enjoyed, Geoff waxed lyrical, “Easy, without a doubt, playing Fagin in ‘Oliver.’ Fagan is the best part. It’s got

everything, seriousness, colour, music, comedy, tragedy drama. I loved doing the part. Ron Moody played the original Fagin in the 1962 stage musical and the film made in 1968, the year Molly and I married. I tried to copy his mannerisms, they were magnificent. I’ve still got the hat I wore in the show. A musical moves away from the original concept. Dickens’ ‘Oliver Twist’ portrayed terrible poverty and there was a message in it. A musical becomes something else, fun more than stress and tragedy. The musical is light, does not dwell on the dark of life. ‘The King and I’ is a close second. It was the largest number of children I ever saw walk on stage. They all wanted to play a part and we managed to find a part for every single child” Geoff concluded our conversation with a feeling tribute to his wife and family, “Molly and I were married in Hadleigh 41 years ago. We have had a happy and contented life thanks more to Molly than me. Her love and understanding, and that of our son and daughter, Sarah and Matthew, gave me the freedom to indulge my yen for theatre. Many is the time I have come home and said ‘this is the last show I am ever going to do.’ It is worthwhile when the show goes on and is a success, but the run up can be truly hellish and one can become rather grouchy at home!” It seems, then, that audiences after a successful show owe their applause not only to the players: also to the families who have suffered during its making! Avatar 3-D (12A, 162mins, James Cameron) Without doubt one of the most anticipated films of the year, Avatar sits on top of the 2009 to see list along with the likes of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It also joins these two in the top five most expensive film budgets (the-numbers.com), with total of around $237 million. With all the hype expectation surrounding the film, it is hard to see how this film will not go down in history as one of the greatest blockbusters ever. The two hour forty-seven minute film features a never-before-seen technique of filming. Without going into too much detail, the main differences are as follows. The film is shot entirely in a ‘game world’, through a game engine. This means that when Sam Worthington and the rest of the cast are acting in real life, Cameron is watching on a screen. On the screen, everything that is captured on camera is projected in the game world. The game world, in this case, is Pandora. When the actors are projected into the game world, Cameron can see them actually acting on screen with all the CGI around them. This allows him to adjust everything as it happens, so it can look as real as possible. The other main advantage of this kind of shooting is that there are no camera restrictions. Because the filming is technically taking place in the game world, there are no angle, distance or height limits for the camera, unless specifically shooting actors. So aweinspiring establishing shots and wide-angle shots are common throughout. This groundbreaking technique is a probable way forward for many directors, but Cameron is the first to take advantage of it. In almost every shot in the film, the advantage of filming inside Pandora (as it were) is clear. Every detail is perfected, and all the characters are blended tremendously well to make whole setting look real. Because film’s huge spectacle, some might have expected the narrative to suffer. Surprisingly, this is far from true. With a plot that questions the sustainability of humanity, whilst taking us on a guided tour of a fantastical world, Avatar ticks all the boxes. Whether or not this film is seen in 3-D, you will be left breathless when the credits roll. The only question mark left over the film is whether or not it tops Titanic. You couldn’t possibly say, could you?

Haitian Earthquake At the time of writing, news of this terrible disaster in Haiti is just unfolding and people are asking the very valid question ‘Where is God in this situation?’ As human beings we cannot know why God has created the universe with such potential for both joy and sorrow. But I do believe he wants to see us, out of love, share the joys that we have with those less fortunate and he wants to see us, again out of love, tend and care for those who sorrow. God has created a universe where there is opportunity to love those around us. But God knows that we struggle with loving others and so he has given us Jesus as an example and friend and has sent us the Holy Spirit to strengthen and encourage us. In any disaster, small or great, we can answer the question of God’s whereabouts by pointing to the love expressed by the people he himself has made. The other valid question to ask is, ‘Where am I, when there is such a situation of need?’ For more information call Jim on 827895

Year 9 options evening…

The community spirit within the school and across our partnerships with other schools and community groups is a real strength. I look forward to developing these links further over the coming months, enabling our pupils to participate positively and productively in their local communities.

On Thursday 14th January Year 9 attended their Options’ Evening, where they had a chance to talk to the teachers of various subjects about which options they wanted to take, and get an insight into what each subject involved. This was a fantastic opportunity for them as it made them feel even more confident about the options they wish to take at GCSE. This follows on from the work students do in Lifeskills. We wish our Year 9 well and hope they get the best out of their future at Hadleigh High School. Year 9 are currently undergoing life skills lessons which aim to advise pupils on how to make these important decisions. These lessons involve the new website ‘Kudos’, which is a future careers website, providing information on what jobs would be best suited to the pupils strengths/preferences. This has proved very information in the past.

With best wishes.

A slippery start to the new term...

Dear Reader, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. I joined Hadleigh High School on the 1st January 2010, replacing Mrs Tooze as Headteacher.

A Visit to Cambridge University… On Monday the 18th of January ten GAMA (gifted and more able) Year 11 students are due to have a taster day at Cambridge University, the leading university in the Country. This will hopefully fuel their ambition and help them with future career choices. They will be taken by one of our Hadleigh High School language teachers Mrs. Chamberlain. We’re all sure that they will have a great day and that they will come back with a positive view of their future.

Framlingham, here we come…

Sports Hall & Gym, Floodlit Hard Courts, Grass Pitches, Children’s activities.

Many of the pupils from Hadleigh High School have qualified for the final stages of the Cross Country Suffolk Trial. This is the final event of three trials that take place in order to select the Suffolk team for the Eastern Counties and All England Cross Country Championships. Once again this year’s third cross country trial will be taking place at Framlingham on the 18th January 2010. The students who have qualified for the third round are as follows: Seth Philbedge, Toby Rankin, James Collis, Ben Regan, Ben Berry, Drey Wright, Kieran Clements, Jordan Moat, James Robinson, Sophie Demetriades, Rebecca Grimwade and Natasha Benee. We wish all the participants the best of luck for the up and coming event.

Unfortunately, Hadleigh High School didn’t have a good start to the new school term this year after students were unable to attend due to severe weather conditions. The decision was made as staff couldn’t get to school because of the ice and snow on the roads. Another problem was that buses couldn’t get in from the villages either, leaving staff and pupils no choice but to close the school. Fortunately, the worst of it is over now, and we hope this inconvenience doesn’t occur again.

Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

As you are probably already aware, we have a new Head Teacher at our school. We recently interviewed Mrs Gibson to gain an insight into her background and her experiences in previous schools. Hadleigh High School is the seventh school she has worked in, after teaching in East London, Essex and now Suffolk. At her last school, Honywood

Community Science School, she was a deputy head for six years and she said that it was very similar to Hadleigh High School in many ways. At these schools she taught a wide range of subjects including, French, Drama, Art, History and English. She went on to describe what first impressed her about the school. She found the pupils were very open and friendly and the teachers were very caring; parents, students and staff made her feel extremely welcome. We questioned Mrs Gibson about our links with the community and she mentioned how our leisure centre attracts people, and how the school provides adult education classes. Furthermore, as a school, we raise a lot of money for local, national and global charities through various fundraising events. Finally we asked her if she is enjoying being the Head of our school so far and she replied with great enthusiasm, “I’m thoroughly enjoying it!”

Gifted and Talented… A morning of puzzles, teamwork and problem solving was run last term at Hadleigh High School. We were very pleased to welcome some of our top mathematicians from a number of our feeder primary schools. The pupils were a delight to work with and a credit to their schools. Mrs Dowling from St. Marys, who co-organised the event, and Miss Elliot were very impressed with the mathematical discussions taking place throughout the morning. Thanks also need to go to our Year 8 pupils who helped on the day.

‘Learning 2 Learn’… Ever wondered how your brain works? Well our Year 7 Lifeskills lessons have started to include a new scheme called ‘Learning 2 learn’. This helps pupils understand different ways to interpret information. The theory behind the scheme is that if pupils can correctly identify their learning style (kinaesthetic, auditory or visual) then they can attempt to process information more efficiently.

Music… It’s been a busy winter for the music department, in and out of school. Over the Christmas period Kim Guest, Rowanne Wallett, Luke English and Mrs Randé played with a Christmas orchestra in Bildeston. We are also looking forward to the fusion of the popular band Steel Pictures and the Hadleigh High School Voice Squad who will be performing on Friday 29th January in Bildeston. Also the Wind Band will be performing at Snape Maltings on 13th March. Written by Oliver Hanley, Drey Wright, Molly Green, Lauren Ryder, chloe Graham, Sophie Demetriades and Sam Biddulph

Book Club… A number of Year Nine students are enjoying the chance to be part of a lunchtime book club. The club meet once a fortnight to discuss the books that they have chosen, and there are plans to set up an online forum to discuss the books further. The aim of the whole programme is not only to encourage reading; it is also to promote more challenging literature and to further develop reading skills within the group.

From Layham Archive

The main matters dealt with at the Parish Council meeting of 26 November were: • The Parish Council agreed to deal with the felling of the Burial Ground beech tree on behalf of the PCC. Sources of funding were identified. • Two lots of coping stones have been stolen from a wall in Rands Road – residents should be on the look out for vehicles, the drivers of which, are behaving unusually. • Babergh District Council Planning Department has informed Layham Parish Council that an enforcement file has been opened on Pipkin House. • The Parish Council has expressed concern that the temporary car park surface at the Marquis of Cornwallis might become a permanent feature of the landscape. The temporary surface was permitted on the understanding that a well planned parking area with full screening was to be built in due course. The situation will be monitored. • There were no reservations recorded for the planning applications for work at Hill Farm, Lower Layham and Layham Hall (Upper Layham / Raydon boundaries). • Benton Street traffic difficulties have become a priority for the police to monitor following meetings of the new Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Panel. • The parishes of Layham and Hintlesham are working together on the campaign to ‘underground’ new electricity lines. • The Clerk is to investigate the implications of the Parish Council taking over responsibility for the two telephone boxes. Meetings of the Parish Council are generally held on the last Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend and time is provided for visitors to speak. The Clerk to the Parish Council is: Louise Allen Tel: 01473 827812 Email: Louise@allenbs.co.uk

Photographs have been loaned to Layham Archive for copying by David Keeble. These photographs were amongst the paperwork of the Stow family who lived on Upper Street for many years and, according to information passed on by word of mouth, are of soldiers who were sent to Layham for training around 1910. Apparently, they were billeted in the outbuildings of one or two of our larger houses and, as can be seen from one of the photographs, needed stabling for horses also. Is it possible that anyone can recognise a building from the details in the photograph? If you have a suggestion to make, please contact Michael Woods on 823798.

It is wonderful to see how a bird – using only its beak - can weave vegetation and carry mud in such quantities to make this structure.

Pylons Layham Parish Councillors take the view that it would be preferable for new power lines to be ‘undergrounded’ rather than a second line of large pylons be built across our part of Suffolk. If you feel that way – you can register your feelings with 10 Downing Street by signing up to the UNDERGROUNDING petition: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Undergrounding/

Layham Playgroup ‘Playgroups Winter Welcome!’ Welcome back to all our children after what was a very snowy Christmas break & welcome to our new children & their families. We hope you enjoy our time with us & soon feel part 0f the fantastic ‘extended’ Layham family. As ever we have a packed & exciting programme to delight & entertain. Our overall theme this half term is Noah’s Ark, including discussions about pets, thinking about animals who live in cold places, feeding birds in the garden & setting up a vets surgery in our ever popular role playing area! We are even planning a visit from a real live vet! Valentines Day & Chinese New Year will not be forgotten. 2010 is the year of the tiger, so watch out for the return of our role playing Chinese restaurant, staffed by our own little tiger cubs! See those noodles fly! Two dates to watch out for in the coming weeks: Our winter ‘Open Day’ is to be held on Tuesday 9th February from 10.00am to 12.00 noon. (see separate advert for details). Back by popular demand ‘Quiz Night’ to be held in March, including supper & quality prize raffle. Terrific fun & a great night out. Everyone welcome. (Look out for the posters for details). Finally a huge thank you from all the staff & committee to everyone who worked so hard to make the Christmas Craft Fair such a huge success. It was an amazing day & we are pleased to announce that the event raised a staggering £950.00! The proceeds will be carefully used to buy new toys & equipment for the children in the coming months. Layham Playgroup is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh. Accompanying herself on a keyboard Margaret James entertained members of Hadleigh Evening WI to a presentation which she entitled “A Lifetime in Music” into which she was born in Aberystwyth during the Second World War. Both her parents were musical. Her mother had been a professional singer and her father played the harmonium. The family moved to Clapham in London when she was a toddler. Throughout her childhood Margaret entered singing competitions in which she invariably came first. During the presentation she played and sang several songs that marked milestones in her musical training and career. These included Mozart’s minuet in F, Debussy’s 2nd Arabesque, a solo from Handel’s messiah and familiar to us all Roses are flowering in Picardy. At 18 Margaret found her vocation – teaching children. After she retired she moved to Hadleigh where has coached St. Mary’s church choir and the Hadleigh Choral Society. After practicing singing scales with her encouragement everyone sang a song together. To mark their 45th Anniversary members of Hadleigh Evening are treating themselves to lunch at Hintlesham Hall. The meal will be preceded by conducted tour of the building. This month we were delighted to welcome Janet Morson as a visitor and hope that she will join us. Visitors and new members are always welcome to our monthly meetings which are held on the third Tuesday of the month in the Seminar suite above the library starting 7.30pm. Next months be on 16 February. Sheila Steer will talk about Saga Holidays Philippa Carruthers 01473 823057

Thank You Jean and Iain (Rusty) Chisholm want to thank everyone for their cards and good wishes for their Golden Wedding Anniversary on 9th January. We have so much to be thankful for, and are so grateful for the way Hadleigh has been our home for the past 40 years.

Rotary Review CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: This time the collection period included some of the worst weather ever experienced and the Club is greatly indebted to all the collectors and drivers for braving the elements every night. On the second night there was a blizzard raging but with care we managed to reach most places along Malyon Road and Oxford Drive. It was surprising but very pleasing to find so many children (and adults!) out to greet us. On the last collection night the conditions underfoot were so treacherous that after two falls, including Father Christmas himself! we decided to cut short the collection before any serious injury occurred. We hope that there were not too many children who were disappointed. The House to House raised £978.90 and the Street Collection on Christmas Eve produced £388.76 which was a very good result considering all problems. The funds have been distributed to the following local charities and appeals: EACH Treehouse Appeal, Chris Corder Appeal, 5th Hadleigh Guides, Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee, The Samaritans, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Shelley Centre For Therapeutic Riding. Club members would like to thank very much indeed everyone who supported the collection. CLUB EVENTS: Two Club gatherings took place over the Christmas/ New Year period. A small group enjoyed a visit to the Rock Panto at the Wolsey theatre whilst most of members and wives met at the George, Hintlesham for the traditional Champagne Breakfast. This was thoroughly enjoyed and thanks go to mine hosts at the George for their great hospitality and delicious food. SPEAKER: There has been only one speaker at the Club during the festive period. Steven Robinson gave a graphic account of his recent cycling holiday in the foothills of the Himalayas. He used a traditional British touring bike which became very heavy once loaded with all his requirements for the journey incuding spares and camping gear. He started in Delhi where he completed his fitness training in temperatures well over 100F. He then caught the train to Simla, the actual start of his tour. Simla was the British summer capital in times of the RAJ and remains much the same today. During his ride he climbed high into the foothills reaching 18000ft at one point close to the Tibetan border. Much of the ride was on unpaved and primitive roads taking its toll on body and bike. at some stages it was necessary to resort to lifts on Lorries or buses. However he found everyone very friendly and only too happy to help. At the end of the meeting he displayed his wonderful photographic record of the trip. NEW CLUB: The response to this initiatve has been disappointing so far. If anyone would like to know more about Rotary please do contact Brian Havis tel no 01787 210116, Email brianhavis@btinternet.com FUTURE PROGRAMME: Feb 11: Speaker to be announced Feb 18: Roger Kennell, 'Hadleigh town and river' Feb 25: Charter lunch at Lavenham Swan Members wish the readers of Hadleigh Community News a Very Happy New Year. For all information relating to Hadleigh Rotary Club please contact Rotarian Alan Williams tel no 01473 830229.

Two more film presentations in February! To help you through these chilly winter months the ACC is pleased to bring you two more films in February. Both are set in the sixties, but there the similarity ends as their content is a marked contrast between hilarity and gravity - and they end our short season of presenting two films each month. We would welcome comments on whether you have enjoyed the opportunity of seeing two different films in this format; and more importantly if you would welcome a repeat of this concept for the 2010 autumn to late winter film season.

THE BOAT THAT ROCKED (15) £3

DOUBT (12A)

Friday 12th February at 7.30 pm

£3 Friday 26th February at 7.30 pm

The film is based on fact but with more than a few twists to the story. Radio Caroline burst upon our airwaves in the late 1960s broadcasting from a pirate ship anchored off the Essex coast 24hour pop music, a new band of DJs and a host of land-based groupies anxious to be part of this explosive theme - in short one boat, 8 DJs and no morals! Radio Caroline has been renamed Radio Rock for the film and retains the controversial on-air antics which ruffled both the BBC and government who endeavoured to close down the pirate upstart. Unfortunately for them the ship was anchored just outside territorial waters, it was enjoying good commercial advertising support and had gathered a wide pophungry audience. This is essentially a comedy film - guaranteed to bring us warm memories of the 1960s with those heady days of music, fashion and youth that were slowly redefining British culture. The film stars Bill Nighy, Emma Thompson, Jack Davenport and Kenneth Branagh. Please note this film has a classification 15 and contains scenes that might cause offence to some people.

This film is a screen adaptation of John Patrick Shanley’s stage play - a gripping story about the quest for truth. Meryl Streep is Sister Aloysius and works at St Nicholas Church in the Bronx – a largely Irish-American parish. The resident priest is Father Flynn, a kindly young man, who, with sister Aloysius, is part of the attached grade school staff. When a young junior nun suspects Fr Flynn of molesting one of the boy pupils, she confides in Sister Aloysius – who, armed with nothing but righteous and rigid moral certainty, embarks on her own campaign against the priest. This then is the basis for both his play and film as John Patrick Shanley negotiates skilfully the treacherous waters surrounding the accusation. Meryl Streep’s performance in the film does at times border on being somewhat over the top but the film remains tense and compelling throughout.

After much discussion, we have decided to change the format of “Ansell Snacks” and instead offer a second lunch club on the third Wednesday of each month. Like the original Ansell Lucheon Club which meets on the first Friday of the month, the Wednesday Lunch Club will be for members only and will provide a two course lunch for £3. The purpose of the club is to provide a nutritious meal at a reasonable price where members can meet for friendship and conversation. The first Wednesday Lunch Club will be on March 17th and full details will appear in March’s Community News. In the meantime, if you are interested in joining please phone Biddy on 822285 or Frances on 823719. Alternatively, if you are already a member of the Friday Lunch Club, you can leave your name with Sylvia on 5th February or 5th March. Please note we are hoping to arrange transport with the Community Bus but this was not confirmed at the time of going to press.

Fire at Priory Hall Hadleigh fire service were among the many people who helped save us and our home when part of Priory Hall, Benton Street, was set on fire at the beginning of the year. Our local team were first on the scene as flames came dangerously close to the timber framed part of the building. Working with four other fire teams they quickly stopped the fire spreading and even found time to move much loved family items which would otherwise have been damaged by falling wood and water. They were truly impressive and we thank them for doing such an amazing job. We were asleep when the fire was started but fortunately passersby saw the smoke and woke us up. Neighbours had already called the fire brigade by the time we woke but were unable to cross the road to us as exploding tiles were raining down on them. Their prompt action was a major factor in our home being saved and their subsequent kindness was a comfort to us all. It seems a very small word under the circumstances but the Hilton family – Anthony, Cyndy, Michael, Peter and Emily - says a huge thank you to neighbours, passersby and firemen (with a little gratitude to the wind for blowing the fire southward away from the timber framed house). Let’s hope the arsonist is caught or next time people may not be so lucky.

Blake's Blog: Seeking Redemption I may have told many people whom I meet during Blake's walks that for the past 10 months he has been undergoing assistance dog training with Dog AID. Dog AID is a charity, providing dog trainers with knowledge of specialist tasks, advising owners how to train their dog. Following our recent misdismenours last month, I must tell everyone how Blake redeemed himself. Having found myself stuck on the sofa, legs deserting me, Blake proudly woke himself to come to my rescue, on command “Get Help” he's been taught to pull the red emergency cord, which goes straight through to a response team who were able to contact my parents for much needed help! Ruby and her Horses Layham Village Hall on Thursday 4th March 2010 ‘If you get a chance to see these two entertainers grab the opportunity with both hands!’ - The East Anglian Daily Times This is a true life narrative told by Neil Lanham from stories that were told to him by his Mother Ruby. In the show the audience will be drawn back to the period just before the First World War and then through the agricultural depression of the 1930s. It was, Ruby said, a time when 'If you hadn't got anything you were lucky because you hadn't got the worry of it. For sure as eggs are eggs you'd loose it.' The narrative is supported by a PowerPoint presentation of Ruby's own photographs, digitally enhanced for the big screen, and each story is followed by an unaccompanied song from Andrew Stannard in his nutbrown East Suffolk voice. Everything you hear on the night will come straight out of the oral tradition, nothing having been taken from books. 'We have had quite a bit of feed back of a very positive nature. The words ‘charming’ ‘enchanting’ ‘riveting’ and suchlike have been used. 'The two men held the audience spellbound for 2 hours and Ruby was brought alive with stories producing bouts of laughter and feelings of sadness in equal amounts' - East Anglian Daily Times 18 Sept. 2007. Tickets including a ploughman’s supper £10 (concessions £9) from The Queens Head, The Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh, Dan Moat or Rob Keeble 01473 822668

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts There is a challenge in writing a column like this in that because of publishing deadlines you are actually writing about gardening jobs three to four weeks ahead of when you write it, and you do this on the assumption of "average" weather. Consequently I apologise for not writing about snow and the garden last month. I got caught out in several ways. Firstly snow can build up on netting, and I had not taken the net off of the roof of my fruit cage, so this had to be done with freezing fingers in a blizzard before the weight wrecked the cage. Secondly I had not lifted any celeriac, turnips or winter radish and stored them in sand so they have been covered up with snow in frozen ground. Actually snow covering can protect plants from the worst of the frost, and this may save some plants that would otherwise be killed. One of the interesting things in this years seed catalogues is the offer from Suttons of a range of grafted plants including tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. The comparison pictures are quite convincing, but the disincentive is the price of £9.95 for 3 plants. You would need to get an enormous crop of tomatoes to make this a worthwhile investment. It appears that grafted tomato plants have been used commercially for some time, because they can be more vigorous and have increased resistance to pests and diseases. If anyone wants to try DIY grafting the information is on the web. What is missing is information on the best varieties to use as a root stock. Weather Records In December the SNOW came ! It takes several inches of snow to make an inch of rain, still the December "rainfall" totalled 73.3 mm ( 2.9 ") , which is a bit more than average, and increased the 3 month figure to 252 mm ( 9.9 " ) which is well above average. This was not enough to make up for the dry weather in the first 9 months of the year so the annual figure ended up at 568 mm ( 22.4 " ) compared with an average over the last 12 years of 637 mm ( 25 2 ). The maximum temperature in December was 11 Cel ( 52 F ), and the minimum was -6 Cel ( 21 F ). The maximum temperature is fairly typical, and the minimum a bit lower than normal. Ground temperature in mid January was 1 Cel ( 34 F ) , which is cold, but not surprising in view of the early January weather. Not much will grow at this temperature so bulbs are probably going to be a bit later this year. Hints We could get a lot more snow yet this Winter. If we do, brush or shake it off your evergreens to try and avoid broken branches. Leave other plants that get buried alone. They may look terrible but they will probably recover. At the moment Winter pruning is on hold because one should not prune most things when there is the threat of hard frost, but as soon as the weather improves it will be important to get on with it. The ground will be very wet as the snow melts, but as soon as it dries a bit it will be worth attacking the weeds to get as many as possible out before they flower and seed. Towards the end of the month is the right time to sow the flower seeds that need an early start in a propagator or on a Windowsill. One can also sow some vegetables seeds in a cold greenhouse. These can either be in modules for planting out later, or for crops like radishes in boxes or old bowls . The bowls will need drainage holes. East Anglia Potato Day this year is on February 13th at Stonham Barns from 9 30 am to 1 30 pm, and a diary date if you need cheering up. The Suffolk Orchid Society Exhibition is on 21st of March. Hadleigh Healing Society Children have built snowmen, sledged down hills, adults have driven over icy roads and slipped to go about their everyday lives. Schools closed and not enough grit for the roads. What a start to 2010. Some would say this is how winters were back along. Our inconvenience is nothing in comparison to those who have no homes, no shelter from the cold or have lost family in the latest natural disaster. The majority of people in this country are warm, well fed and able to cope with what life throws at them. Some struggle to make sense of life. They cannot see beyond today and the future uncertain and frightening. Our qualified, registered healers are there to listen. Be that sympathetic ear. All this done in privacy and in the utmost confidence. Do not be isolated let us help you. Please contact us on telephone 01473 823282 or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org.

Community Achievement Awards 2009 Local Winners Babergh’s award scheme, which is now in its 18th year, aims to highlight the work of individuals and groups who make a real difference by consistently working for the benefit of their local communities and schools. All the winners were notified before Christmas and have been invited to a special awards ceremony to celebrate their achievements and to receive their award in March. Under 18 Awards JASMINE ALEXANDER & PHOEBE TURNER, HADLEIGH JASMINE & PHOEBE are aged 9 and 10 respectively and our youngest ever winners! Together they decided to spend their summer holiday break doing something to help raise the spirits of soldiers stationed in Afghanistan. Initially they held a garage sale and raised £67 by selling their own toys and games. This money was used to buy toiletries and sweets for packing in shoeboxes to post to Afghanistan. In total they packed and sent 20 shoeboxes each including a personal message of support. The girls’ fathers are both serving in Afghanistan and they agreed to distribute the parcels to soldiers on the foreign base. Jasmine and Phoebe have both talked about their efforts to other children in their School Assembly and have continued to pack shoeboxes using donations they have received. To date they have packed and wrapped a further 30 parcels. Jasmine has sold homemade cards to raise more money and following publicity a local estate agent and other voluntary organisations have become involved. Their project has now grown much bigger and is having a genuine impact on the men and women at the local Wattisham airbase. The other children at the girls’ school are continuing to donate gift boxes and a competition is being held to design a logo for their project. Jasmine and Phoebe have received many letters from the servicemen and women in Afghanistan who have received parcels. BEN STIFF - KERSEY BEN decided to take up a 980 mile skateboarding challenge last year from John O’Groats to Land’s End for CORDA , a heart and stroke charity, after his friend suffered a bout of strokes when aged only 15. Ben was the youngest person ever to complete the feat and the fastest, taking just 28 days, (six days faster than the previous record), to skateboard the journey. Ben was so stunned by what happened to his friend and wanted to raise awareness that strokes can affect people of all ages. In order to take up the challenge Ben had to train both locally and in London and endured a gruelling fitness regime, involving hours of skateboarding plus building up his strength and stamina in the gym. Ben endured the steep hills of the Scottish Highlands and Lake District, torrential rain, fluctuating temperatures and severe blisters as he travelled around 40 miles daily, raising almost £2,500. A spokesperson for CORDA said “Ben has done an incredible job of not only raising thousands of pounds for CORDA but also in raising awareness of strokes.” Over 18 awards IAN MACGREGOR – LINDSEY IAN has lived in Lindsey for over 50 years and is a stalwart of the village and a focus of the local community. Ian has been a member of the PCC for over 10 years and in his role of Churchwarden has given freely of his time and skills. He is keen supporter of all village events and has displayed large advertising boards outside his house to promote music events in the church and village hall. For many years Ian has collected the village contribution for Poppy Day recalling with much humour his National Service in the RAF which has cemented his lifelong interest in WWII airfields and aeroplanes. Recently, Ian’s main contribution to Lindsey has been his independent editorship and publication of the monthly newsletter which manages to remain both informative and thought-provoking. This year Ian single-handedly drove Lindsey’s successful entry into the Suffolk Village of the Year competition brilliantly achieving 2nd place for the village. Ian’s nominee says “In his quiet and humorous way Ian epitomises the spirit of community life for which this award was intended.” KATIE LIGGETT – BEAUMONT COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL, HADLEIGH KATIE is a teaching assistant at Beaumont Community School in Hadleigh and has always contributed over and above what is expected of her. Katie has become increasingly involved in educating children about gardening, healthy food and balanced diets and in her own time

volunteered to organise a School Gardening Club. This is now the School’s most popular Club and Katie has created a kitchen garden which produces a wide variety of vegetables, all sampled by the children and also used for school dinners. The School has won awards for its produce, including one for their potato yield! An allotment was donated to the School and Katie organised volunteers to dig over and prepare the land. Both parents and children helped with weeding and seeding. Katie has spent many hours over evenings and weekends and during her summer holiday break to tend the allotment in order that it remains a practical resource for the School and Gardening Club. Katie’s nominees say “We believe an award would help to show that we recognise the commitment Katie has put into this timeconsuming project.”

TREVOR CLARKE - HADLEIGH TREVOR is 30 but has been making a musical contribution to the local community from a young age over many years. In 2001 Trevor helped the Hadleigh Lions to organise the Annual Carnival Week. He then joined the town’s Entertainment Committee and from then on was involved with both the Summer and Christmas Street Fayres and Music Festivals. Trevor proved to be an “all rounder” - compering events, organising both on and off-stage activities and providing sound and lighting equipment. He also chaired meetings and communicated via a website and the Community News Magazine. In 2004 Trevor initiated and organised a Talent Show for young people, which has since grown in popularity and is Hadleigh’s own “Pop Idol”, demonstrating Trevor’s expertise on the microphone and his ability to work with a wide range of ages. Trevor has also worked behind the scenes in persuading radio stations and their presenters to get involved in his many events. In 2006 Trevor was appointed Chairman of the Entertainments Committee working tirelessly in leading the town’s entertainment until the dissolution of the Committee in early 2009. However his enthusiasm and support were evident once again for the Christmas lighting up event last December. Trevor has given so much pleasure to audiences through music. He plays in Elmsett Brass Band and is the musical director for the Elmsett pantomime. He also supports the HADS theatre company providing sound and lighting for their performances. Wherever productions take place Trevor always provides a professional show. He runs childrens discos at village halls

Dear Sir Please write to: Kelvin Avis 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF or email: kelvin@keithavis.co.uk

Dear Sir I would like to thank the Jolly Meat Company for their service and the quality of their meat. My Christmas dinner, a haunch of venison was absolutely superb, as were all the bacon, gammon and sausages that we had over the Christmas period. It is good to find the exceptional quality of the fare provided by our local producers, from the pudding club run by Smugglers, and their excellent Christmas pudding, to the fruit and veg provided by Partridges Farm Shop and of course that superb meat. Why would anyone want to go to a crowded supermarket and pay the same amount for poor quality? Rob Sweeting

Dear Sir At the start of each month I look forward to receiving my HCN. As I write, this day the 10th of January, my HCN has just arrived, the big delay due to the extended Christmas holidays, and the extreme bad weather of late, thanks, Joanne!! Unlike the Boy Scout motto, of Be Prepared, we in this country were completely caught out, with regards to the snow and Ice. With the extra falls of snow, and the ever freezing temperatures, we were left with deadly icy roads and footpaths, in particular the foot paths. It would be a very good idea for the future, to have more Grit Bins to be placed in convenient places, so as to grit more pavements/paths, would that cost, outway the cost to the NHS on mending broken bones, to many who have fallen on the icy pavement/paths. I was recalling past winters with my friend ‘Titch’ Leeks, 1962-3 came to his mind, when he had to walk on top of hedges, as Frog Hall Lane had several feet of snow, to get to work, in those days, If you didn't attend work, you never got paid, is it different today? Reference the winter of 1962-3. I new nothing of that harsh winter, I was fighting a different battle, with insurgence in Sarawak, North West Borneo, in humid temperatures of 90f with 40 Commando Royal Marines. Winter of 1978-9 was very cold, had to battle to get to work in Sudbury, had many winters similar. I sincerely hope that the families of our soldiers serving in Afghanistan, had a nice peaceful and Happy Christmas, I would like to wish them all well, for this year, and the future. “CYCLIST” be warned, riding your bike on pavements, could incur a penalty fine of £60 should you delay in paying that fine, £30 can be added, to that fine, so remember, bikes are to be ridden on roads, not pavements/paths. John Caley

Dear Sir Following the two recent spells of cold weather immediately prior to and following Christmas, I was appalled to see that the two main car parks in Hadleigh did not appear to be gritted at all. I'm fortunate enough to be young and relatively fit, but during the few minutes that I sat in my car in Magdalen Street car park I witnessed a succession of people struggling to cross the car park including parents with young children and elderly residents, some of whom clung to each other in an effort to stay upright. Though I didn't witness any personally I'm sure there must have been several slips and falls during these periods. The weather conditions were forecast in advance on both occasions and the County Council were largely successful with their gritting operations in keeping the main routes through Suffolk open. Yet Babergh District Council, whose offices are less than half a mile from both car parks seem incapable of looking beyond their centrally heated offices to assist. Babergh manage both car parks and receive the income from parking enforcement, yet put no resources into ensuring they remain safe for use by local residents during these cold snaps. Part of our Council Tax is used to fund the twice yearly 'Babergh Matters', largely a self-promotional magazine issued by the Council to convey how Babergh listens to its residents and spends our Council Tax. Am I alone in thinking the publication costs might be better invested in a radical solution such as equipping two men each with wheelbarrow of rock salt to spend a couple of hours gritting the car parks during cold weather - perhaps they could redeploy the editorial staff of Babergh Matters during icy spells? Each year in winter, when there are prolonged icy or snowy conditions, we are contacted by people who normally run or cycle outside or are about to go on a Skiing holiday, to ask if they can just turn up to use the Fitness Studio machines. Our insurance stipulates that we cannot let people train in the Studio unless we have given them instruction on the machines and ensured they are fit to do so. This causes some friction between my staff and the potential customer who is desperate to keep their fitness levels up and only wants to use a certain machine. Providing people have had an induction here, they can just turn up, with no commitment and pay a session price, even if it is only once a year. In the current “claims culture” that prevails, even signing a chitty to say you do so at your own risk does not remove our responsibility. I would like to suggest that anyone who thinks they could, at some point need to use the Fitness Studio, book an induction so that they can just turn up without giving our staff a hard time, but remember to keep your card in a safe place and don’t monopolise one machine all evening – It could be an opportunity to improve your fitness by doing some Cross Training and to meet like-minded people. If I still haven’t convinced you then you can just turn up for any of our fitness classes. Mrs Chris Marsh, Hadleigh Leisure Centre Manager

Dear Sir I would like to compliment and thank Jake Grimsey and his fellow paper deliverers for managing to deliver our newspapers every day under what must have been very difficult circumstances. Well Done! Shirley Bennett

Dear Sir Re: High Street Christmas Trees, Saturday January 9th We started in sub-zero temperatures with flurries of snow during the morning and heavier snow when we came to take the big tree down. We finished in the High Street by midday due to excellent teamwork by the following intrepid volunteers: Farhad Abdly, Stuart Cairns, Charlie Dawson, Andy Forbes, Cherry Forbes (both Trees and especially the Hot Sausage Rolls - most welcome), Harry Forbes, Brian Loftus, Sarah Loftus, Dan Moat, Glenn Root, Judith Townsend and Bob Vince. Thanks also to Mike Ager and Kenny McGhee for the loan of the ladders. In the afternoon we were assisted in taking down the big tree by Rob Partridge and Chris Edgar of the Chamber of Commerce. Cowles Electricians doing their bit to take down the lights. Once again may I thank everyone involved in making the High Street look a picture for the Christmas period. Peter Matthews, Chair - Hadleigh Town Forum

Dear Sir We have been Hadleigh residents for over 11 years and most of this time we have been very happy. However over the last 6 months or so our life has been spoilt by repeated dog fouling on the pavement outside the front of our house and driveway. We have contacted Babergh District Council who have put a sticker on the lamp post outside our house and we have also put up our own poster asking people to take home their dog’s fouling. When the recent snow melted we were left with several “piles” and this evening someone has had the nerve to put their dog’s fouling into our wheelie bin that we put out for collection. PLEASE TAKE YOUR DOG’S MESS HOME OR PUT IT IN THE SPECIAL BINS PROVIDED. Christian Bone

It wasn’t until the first cold snap, just before Christmas that I started seeing large numbers of Linnets, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Yellowhammer, a few Reed Bunting and Meadow Pipits. But these flocks were in and around game cover strips. Fieldfare and Redwing numbers were higher during the cold weather in the first few days of January. A flock of 175+ Fieldfare were perched in an oak tree at Pond Hall road on the 6th January. A flock of 146+ Redwings were feeding on Cotoneaster berries near Lady Lane Garage during the cold snap. A group of Blackbirds were eating Russet apples besides the church in Long Bessels, 93 Blackbirds were counted on the 3rd January. I’m sure that the big orchards at Boxford will have very large numbers of Fieldfare and Redwings during any cold weather that we get. Despite the cold weather, there were some species singing. The Dunnock and Mistle Thrush were the most obvious. Great Tit, Coal Tit, Robin, Wren and even the little Goldcrest were in song. In Wolves and Hintlesham Woods the Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Marsh Tit and Song Thrush were singing on the 1st January. The cold snap has seen good numbers of Snipe along the Brett, 40+ were at the Lower Layham end of the Brett with 3 Green Sandpiper and 4 Little Grebe on the 1st January. Kersey Brook also had 9 Snipe, 2 Green Sandpiper, Grey Wagtail and a Kingfisher, all on the 3rd January. Near by a Barn Owl was hunting over Stiffs Farm, Kersey. A Little Egret was flying over Kersey Mill ont eh same day. Barn Owls were also seen during the day at Tower Mill Lane, Hill Farm Layham, Shelly and Benton End. A sure sign of hungry birds. What will the weather be like in February, most often the coldest month?. Jerry Oxford

Hadleigh Goldstar Athletic Football Club (Sponsored by Taylor & Sons Property Agents) A month without any football action, after our 4-4 draw at home to Lions Head, our next match at Norbridge was postponed as they could not raise a team. We did have a home match scheduled for December 27th, but with the players eating too much xmas pud and too much drink, secretary Keith decided to postpone the match, which was probably a good move considering the weather, which put all our matches on hold up to January 17th. With the “Snowy” conditions, certainly “Snowy Dennett” lived up to his nickname, but I am reliably informed he was itching for a match to be played so he could use one of his “xmas presents” yes he had a new hot water bottle complete with a furry cover!! Secretary Keith was also keen to get a match on, as he had borrowed enough ‘pink wellies’ for the players to play in along with some orange coloured footballs, but the snow got too deep, although supporter Nigel had offered to borrow a digger to clear the pitch, but we think he just wanted to build some ‘snowmen’. Congratulations go to Stuart ‘Treasure’ Hunt & Bob ‘The Flag’ Grimsey and the others who successfully completed the sponsored walk to London in aid of their relative Chris Corder. Bob, not being overly fit, complained he had lost some weight, and was at the completion of the walk seen heading off in the direction of a well known fast food outlet for some burgers and fries. A double congratulations goes to Tim Rix, firstly in his ‘summer sport’, he has recently been appointed 1st team Captain of Hadleigh Cricket Club, secondly on his Christmas Day engagement to Hannah. With the fixtures now in disarray, I cannot give details of any home matches for February. But hopefully some matches in late January and early February will have been played, with reports in the March edition of H.C.N.

Hadleigh RFC U11s v Colchester Sunday 17th January 2010 Two games against Colchester, and two very different performances from Hadleigh under 11’s. The first game saw a hungry Colchester side dominate the ball and with the exception of the first two minutes, Hadleigh rarely threatened the visitors’ line. The forwards struggled to operate effectively as a unit, particularly at the breakdown which resulted in Colchester winning streams of valuable possession which they used well, scoring four tries to the home side’s one. Wing Greg Warner’s forced his way over in the corner to score his first try for the club in his first season but the fightback was too late in the game to put Colchester under any pressure. The home side were sufficiently disappointed with their initial performance to come out in the second game fired up and a more aggressive showing from the forwards, led by Joe Colcomb, provided more ball for the backs and a welldeserved early score from prop, Ben Dulake. Colchester did equalise and for long periods of the second half the match seemed destined to end at stalemate, with neither try being converted. But the game came to life again when a late try from Arthur Romer-Lee and conversion from Robert Redmore seemed to seal the win for Hadleigh. It certainly appeared the players thought so, as they allowed Colchester to come thundering back from the kick off to score a try of their own with the last play of the game. However, the visitors failed to convert and Hadleigh had their win by the narrow margin of 12-10. Match Squad: James Brown, Gregor Campbell, Joe Colcomb, William Dalby, Ben Dulake, Kurt Grimsey, Daniel Holloway, Oliver Knight, Robert Redmore, Harrison Reed, Arthur Romer-Lee, Logan Unwin, Greg Warner.

Hadleigh United F.C. Youth Under 11’s

Hadleigh United under 11’s – New Years Eve 2009 As I prepare this article for the Under 11’s we currently have no snow (heavy rain but no snow) and it’s the poor weather that has lead to the boys games being cancelled for December and the start of the new year. With 20 plus very frustrated lads what could we do? Of course, spend New Years Eve morning getting the Mangers, Coaches, Dads, Brothers etc playing a mixed game of footie. Despite it being cold and a bit damp the boys were there in force full of enthusiasm to run off their Christmas dinners. Thanks to all those who turned out for the boys, these fun events only take place if people give a bit extra of their time. Hopefully the weather will improve and we can start catching up with our re-arranged fixtures. Weekly match reports can be found at www.greenun24.co.uk. Fixtures 06.02.10 Home v St. John’s League 13.02.10 Away v Kesgrave, 11 a side friendly 27.02.10 Home v Whitton, 11 a side friendly Please check fixtures as these will be amended as games are rescheduled

Hadleigh RFC Minis V Colchester Under Sevens Following two weeks of postponements due to the snow, Hadleigh Under 7s made the most of the thaw to push their Colchester counterparts to the limit. The first match was a see-saw affair resulting in a 6-6 draw. Hadleigh matched Colchester try for try, with fine efforts from William Marston (2), Ollie Butler (2), and twins Isla and Tommy Romer-Lee, who scored a try apiece. Colchester prevailed in the second match, beating Hadleigh 6-4, although further tries by the impressive Isla Romer-Lee (2), Ryan Croft and Marston meant Colchester had to work hard for their victory. Under Eights Hadleigh Under 8s began the first of two matches looking as though they barely recognised each other after a 4 week lay-off caused by the holiday period then bad weather. Colchester took full advantage of Hadleigh's slow start to the 2010 programme to open up a 3-0 half-time lead. Hadleigh fought back in the second half with fine tries from Oliver Webb (2), Oliver Jervois and Harry Ellis, but their efforts could not prevent a 74 defeat. The Hadleigh youngsters took heart from their improving form to present a much firmer challenge in the second match, both Jervois and Ellis again showing good pace to score the tries that kept Hadleigh in this tight encounter. But it was man-of-the-match Webb who really caught the eye, running in two more tries to take his mornings tally to four, including a last-play touchdown that earned Hadleigh a well deserved 4-4 draw. Under Tens Hadleigh's Under 10 side stood their ground in three close encounnters against a strong Colchester line-up. Hadleigh lost the first game 3-1, with forward Andrew Halls battling through the Colchester defence to score Hadleigh's try. Tries by winger Joshua Cameron and centre Oscar Pepper could not prevent a 4-2 defeat in the second game, whilst a further try by Cameron ensured Hadleigh again made their mark, despite a narrow 21 defeat in the third match. The closeness of the scores in all three games shows the strength of spirit in this determined Hadleigh side, an attitude that will stand them in good stead for their upcoming games against more evenly matched opposition.

Bildeston Rangers U14’s

We would like to thank both our sponsors for continuing to support the lads, they are Alan Planck of G. Leeks Skip Hire (01473 824256) for sponsoring the lads kit and Andrew Knock of A.K. Services - Septic Tank Emptying (01473 822694) for supplying the lads with training tops this year. Your support is fully appreciated.

A Happy New Year for Hadleigh RFC ……….at long last! Hadleigh 16pts Lakenham-Hewitt 7 pts It seems a long way off now but the Hadleigh 1st XV had not played a game of rugby since December 5th with an array of cancellations and rearranged fixtures du to the severe weather conditions. But at long last the new year was allowed in with an unconvincing but well earned win at home against Lakenham Hewitt , Norwich, on January 16th. Neither team had been able to venture on to the training grounds for a month and the early exchanges showed that Hadleigh had managed to maintain their level of fitness and speed more so than the visitors and fluent forward play and strong running backs paved the way for the first try by full back Mike O Hallorhan after just 5 minutes. For the next half an hour a dour struggle of two tired sets of forwards showed the effect of such a long lay off but eventually just before half time Lakenham Hewitt forced the ball over the line after a solid scrum to score a try which was converted making it 7 points to 5. This seemed to wake up the Hadleigh back line who managed to recycle a long clearance kick by the visiting full back and a curving run by OHallorhan from within his own half enabled him to link with the centres to send over Sean Van der Rensburg for his first try for the club. The sides turned around for half time with the score 10pts to 5 pts in favour of Hadleigh. The second half continued to be played out with a variety of good running play but there were far too many handling errors. The stop start play contributed to a disappointing second half and two penalty kicks by Hadleigh centre, Andy Bartholomew, were the only scoring additions. Hadleigh did manage to see in the new year with a solid win but they will have to improve on this performance if they are to take on and beat League leaders, Haverhill, in a rearranged League Fixture on January 23rd.

A NEW initiative aimed at uncovering young golf talent in west Suffolk is to be based at Newton Green Golf Club. Three professionals and a leading amateur will run the nationally funded, parttime scheme from Newton’s golf academy. Home professional Tim Cooper has been named as lead coach for the initiative run under the auspices of the West Suffolk Golf Partnership. Bungay and Suffolk Water Park, near Ipswich, will be the other bases for the scheme elsewhere in the county. Tim Cooper will be assisted by Haverhill assistant Ollie Rush and Suffolk Water Park based professional Shane Warren, along with Newton single-handicapper Ian Woodhead, who takes a leading role in Suffolk junior golf and holds a Professional Golfers’ Association level one coaching qualification. The initiative will open with a talent spotting day for youngsters that have already started the game or are about to take it up. This will be held at Newton on Monday, February 15. Details are available by contacting 01787-313215 or 07771-324752. Thirty juniors, including those based in Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, will be accepted for the monthly course stretching over six months. Three Newton youngsters, Ben Uttridge, Alice Barlow and Eloise Aldous, have already been pre-selected. The coaching programme has been drawn up by Ian Woodhead as part of a new national strategy to encourage youngsters to join golf clubs and enhance their skills. The best will move on to the county under 15s squad, which will be managed by Ian from February.

MOTs arranged TYRE & GA Trudy’s Marathon Blog http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/TrudyAvis Within my training programme I have scheduled in some local races to experience the race environment. 16 Weeks to go On Sunday 3rd January I had hoped to participate in the Hadleigh cross country race, however due to the snow and ice it was postponed. Determined for my training to begin I went for a run with Andrew, Deb and John, by the end we had managed to run 10 miles (yes we must be mad). With the weather conditions not improving for the rest of the week I decided to play it safe using the treadmill and attending fitness classes at the gym, training here does have it’s benefits with just enough time left for that steam and jaccuzi. 15 Weeks to go On Sunday 10th January I was yet again hoping to participate in a cross country race this time in Newmarket although this race was also postponed due to the weather conditions. As I felt I needed to continue with my training I went out for a run, as there was fresh snow on the ground I felt more confident, but while I was running the snow was coming down heavy and was starting to drift I arrived home looking like the abominable snowman ! With the weather improving I managed to get out on three more runs and completed twenty six miles over the course of the week (now to fit this into 1 race). 14 Weeks to go On Sunday 17th January I had no race planned although I went to a fitness festival at Peake fitness Stoke by Nayland taking part in Spinning (group stationary cycling) and Body Pump (using barbells). I’ve been out on four runs, one of which was hill repetitions which is running up a hill with effort and taking a recovery jog back down (yes I preferred the down). For the other three runs I ran 6, 3 and 10 miles. Overall in spite of the weather conditions I am quite pleased with how my training is going, with no illness, no injuries and all toe nails intact. For my fundraising I am planning to hold an auction of promises, further details about this event to follow. I would like to say a big thank you to those who have already sponsored me. Ipswich Town Community Trust is looking to recruit 20 individuals between the ages of 16-18 for their Prince’s Trust TEAM programme due to begin on the 1st March 2010. Thanks to funding from the Learning Skills Council the Prince’s Trust programme at Ipswich Town will be running two TEAM programmes simultaneously. The first programme which is aimed at 19-25 year olds began at the beginning of February, whilst the second programme will be aimed at 16-18 year olds and begins on the 1st March 2010. Run in partnership with Suffolk New College, both programmes will be working to offer help and support to those looking to make positive life decisions and move on to new opportunities including employment. The initiative has been successfully run for two years with the sixth team recently graduating at a ceremony attended by Blue’s defender and Prince’s Trust Ambassador David Wright, along with The Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor David Goldsmith and Ipswich Town Chief Executive Simon Clegg. The 12-week courses will consist of a variety of activities to help those involved reach their ultimate goals whether this is gaining confidence or experience in the workplace. In common with the rest of the nations football teams, Hadleigh United were left kicking their heels as the snow and ice decimated our festive season matches. The only match played by the club in that spell was a trip to Harwich and Parkeston on Bank Holiday Monday. A bumpy pitch meant the game was never going to be a classic. Manager Peter grant gave first team debuts to goalkeeper Chris Keeler and another teenager Jamie Cowan who was a substitute who came off the bench in the later stages of the game. A good clearance by Kris Rose saved Hadleigh from falling behind in the first half. Early in the second period Ben Garnham scored what turned out to be the only goal. After that success, Hadleigh took charge with the home keeper making great saves from Scott Wark and Ben Goodchild to prevent further Hadleigh goals. Former Hadleigh manager Steve Jay was in charge of the Essex team. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Matthew Prior, Paul Crawford and John Day. Brettsider

Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee Once again some 550 vouchers worth £7.00 each have been distributed to the over 70's in Hadleigh. This was made possible by a successful Christmas Appeal which raised £3638.00. Dixon Dart League 14th December Brewers B were unlucky not to record a win at home to the Ram, Liam Mcloud and S. Ravensdale won their respective singles to give the brewers a 5-4 advantage with two to play, but some classy darts from Darren and Ted Harvey secured a hard fought 6-5 victory for the Ram. There was another close match at Hintlesham Social Club, where the British Legion B were the visitors, some inspired darts from S.Mcarthy, C. Horne, and M.Oxford in the singles helped the Legion side to a 6-5 win. 21st December No early christmas presents for the Brewers B in the local derby as the A side won this one 7-4, it was close however going into the singles with the A side leading 3-2, Chris Warren won the first for the B side to level the match, but wins from Dave Gooderham, Andy Taylor, Mark Chaplin, and Steve Taylor wrapped up the match, and a 73 final score. A last game decisive win from Geoff Macfarlane gave the Eight Bells a narrow 6-5 win away at the British Legion B, not sure who ate all the mince pies. Cock A were on top form with a cracking 9-2 win at home to 4th placed British Legion A, Mick Stuart and Mark Rose the only winners for the Legion. Three 180`s this week, one each for Geoff Parmenter, Dave Levitt, and Dave Dryer. 4th January Northcroft lost the first triples game at home to second place Brewers A, this seemed to spur them into action as they won the next triples and all three doubles, some quality darts from Pete and Andy Batih in the first two singles made it 6-1 to the Northcroft, Brewers then hit back with an excellent win for Curtis Hammond over Dave (budgie) Dryer, and wins from Mark Chaplin, Dan Brown, and Andy Taylor for a respectable 6-5 score line. Two triples wins was as good as it got for the Kings Head, the Jets were on fire winning the next nine games to record a 9-2 victory. Naughton Wheelers Stuart King won the last singles for his side to avoid the whitewash as the George A won this one 10-1. Andy Chilton won the first singles game for the Eight Bells to level the score at three a piece at home to the George B, Glenn Root, Keith Gooderham, and John Martin won the next three singles to win the match for the George B, Bells Ron Newton and Kevin Sparkes won the last two for a respectable 6-5 score line. British Legion A Kenny Morphew hit the maximum 180 as his side beat the Cock 7-4.
