Hadleigh Community Primary School New Headteacher The new year started with a truly new beginning in the form of our new headteacher, Mr Neil Jackson. He has settled in really quickly and is already getting to know the children very well by frequently popping into lessons to speak to the children and to discover how well they are progressing with their learning. Here are a few comments he has to make about himself: “My philosophy as Headteacher here will be to give every child their appropriate learning opportunities so that each individual can reach their maximum potential. I believe that school should be a happy, safe environment where all children can be creative, enjoy learning and begin to take educational risks – so vital as they grow up in a rapidly changing 21st century.” Mr Jackson has also been taking the time and trouble to get to know each member of staff individually. He has already started having short interviews with them – quite a task in a school with around seventy personnel! New Reception Children We had thirty nine children join our two Reception classes in January, and therefore a new teacher was appointed, Miss Sam Read. Both Miss Read and the children have settled in really well already. At the HADS AGM on Monday 31st January a unanimous decision was taken to make the British Lung Foundation our official charity for 2011, in memory of the Society’s one and only Honorary Life Member, Joan Rudkin. Joan “made her mark” on HADS in 1971 and her last appearance was in the highly successful 2008 murder mystery tour for charity: Who Killed the Director? To remind us of Joan’s contribution to HADS I contacted a number of past and present HADS members so that they could share their thoughts with us. Typical comments were that she was very talented and strong lady, loyal, affectionate and with a very dry sense of humour, and she will be sadly missed by her friends and family. Of all the contributions available I have selected the following piece that was written by Dianne Armour. I think it beautifully encapsulates the role Joan had with HADS, Dianne Armour wrote: Gratitude, admiration and a wealth of fond memories well up in me now, as I recall the 40+ years I knew Joan and enjoyed the creative fun and the “family” of amateur dramatics. When Joan accepted a part in a play you knew, as director, that at the core you had reliability and strength. You knew that her professional approach would spill over to others in the cast. In the reverse role – as your director – you felt secure and confident. Joan had great range and ability as an actress and four contrasting productions are called to my mind: The premier – “The Green Children.” Robert James and Mona Bruce The premier – “The Enquiry.” Charlotte Hastings “Bitter Sanctuary” – Rosemary Anne Sissons “The Joy Ride” – Georgina Read Joan played the comically haughty Lady Maud in “The Green Children”. In “The Enquiry” her role was that of a dour and fatalistic inmate in a women’s’ prison. In 1975 – the World Refugee year – her part of a loving and fearful refugee mother in “Bitter Sanctuary” was utterly convincing, helping the two youngsters who played her children, to find truth in their portrayals. “The Joy Ride” centred around Lady Godiva and that famous ride – did she, or didn’t she? And what did her husband think? Joan’s role was Old Moll, the soothsayer, who watched it all and related her views to an audience agog with the fun! “The Diary of Anne Frank” showed Joan’s courage as a director. Working with an emotional vehicle like this and handling such contrasting characters was a task for a brave soul. She guided us through a script so challenging that it needed us to face the truth of the lives of the people restricted to the confines of those attic rooms. Vital to this production was a convincing set. My late husband – Malcolm Ward – worked with Joan and the talented stage team. Gradually, working from a detailed model, the “attic rooms” grew on the old Hadleigh Town Hall stage (built in World War 2 by soldiers billeted in Hadleigh). The atmospheric set included a sitting/dining area, a small kitchenette, the entrance to a small bathroom, two lower bedrooms and an upper room reached by an off-stage ladder. Joan’s eye for every detail, including the smallest ornament, made all of us sense for a while the reality of the lives lived in those rooms in Amsterdam. On the final night, Joan stepped forward to address the audience and calmly wait for the applause to fade. Then in a measured manner she read to everyone, the astonished cast included, a letter she’d received from Otto Frank, Anne’s father. Joan had made contact with him, and his reply included his thanks and good wishes to HADS. Dianne Armour January 2011

It’s along the Railway walk! “Sand Stinkhorn” fungi..... Technically it is known as Phallus hadriani or “Sand Stink-horn” which can appear at anytime in the summer and autumn. “Stinkhorns” are part of a large group of fungi with one particular feature; to find them you don’t need to look: just use your nose - the name tells you why. As a group they are peculiar in that - although a fungus – they have developed a mechanism to get their spores (think of them as seeds) “air-lifted“ to new locations How do they do it! Initially a grey/white (sometimes pinkinsh) “egg – like” structure is formed in the leaf litter, but only partly covered by it (mostly buried in the ground but with the top part visible if you disturb the surface) When conditions are right a spongy shaft erupt from this “egg” and grows to around 150mm (That’s 6 inches to us oldies). The top of this is bell- shaped, and covered with shiny, dark green or brown slime that contains the spores (This can be clearly seen in the Photograph). The object is to attract insects (particularly flies), who follow the scent trail and land on the surface to feed. After consuming some of the slime, they take off again: unwittingly carrying the spores both within their stomachs, and attached to their feet – effectively “airlifting” the spores to a new location. Once the insects have removed all the slime, the spores have all been distributed and the purpose is served. The stem breaks from its underground “egg” and quickly disappears back into the leaf litter The species in the photograph has only been recorded in Suffolk a few times before – and then not in an area such as Hadleigh. It is different to other “Stinkhorns” in that it doesn’t stink like rotting flesh or the other unpleasant smells generally associated with these fungi. This one has a very sweet sickly smell – almost like honey. The shaft its self is a very interesting structure: it is hollow the same as many other fungi, but the walls are cellular and spongy (Photograph 2 shows you what I mean), making it flexible enough to withstand the wind and a few minor knocks. In engineering terms this means that the organism only has to provide material where it is most effective for the construction of a lightweight, but very flexible stem. Quite a feat really for something that doesn’t understand what it is doing! Mick T

Douglas J. Grimsey The family wish to thank all friends and relatives who attended his funeral on Monday 6th December. Donations made in his memory to the S.C.B.U. totalled a magnificent £461.00. Special thanks to Kingsbury & Saunders Funeral Service, Dr. Glasson and the Hadleigh Health Centre and to Mrs Hilary Griffin for conducting the funeral service in such a professional and caring manner. Also thanks to everyone who sent cards and messages during our recent very sad loss.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS

Howard with his 1989 Mercedes SL and Dyson vaccum I am sure that my readers are perplexed as to why I should be featured balancing on the front of my Mercedes and gripping a Dyson vacuum cleaner. I know that nothing surprises you though. At Christmas, one of my retinue of household staff was mowing my carpets with the Dyson turbo charged head when the Dyson became distinctly under the weather. I was horrified that the cost of a replacement would be £230 and more. Like you, I am watching the pennies. Who wants to spend that on a vacuum cleaner – after all, as a good friend said “you can’t wear it”. I was lucky enough though to come across a man in a tiny shop in Ipswich who operates on Dysons; for £65 my Dyson is back to full health with a new motor and indeed I bought a re-conditioned one for £75 to use in some flats under management. If, dear readers, you are afflicted with grinding in your bearings, a floppy hose or lack of suction then call Cliff Lane Electrical on 01473 230447. And what of my Mercedes 300SL. Well, I am re-aligning my collection of cars to make a little more room in the motor house. I have decided to give my readers the opportunity to acquire my Mercedes. It is charcoal grey with grey leather interior and mohair hood; they used to use this model in the Dallas series. If you are interested in purchasing the convertible then do get in touch. My chauffeur, Frank, would be delighted to show you over the car. Just the thing for some Spring days that are around the corner. One of my clients recently could not believe that one could only conduct the affairs of another after they have lost mental capacity if a Lasting Power of Attorney is in place. Failing that one has to pursue the more complicated and expensive route of requesting the Court to appoint a Deputy. There is no automatic authority. We are preparing a fair number of Lasting Powers of Attorney which can bring unforeseen complications if not handled properly. Everyone should have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place so do make an appointment to come to discuss the issue. When selling part of a parcel of land that you own, the Land Registry require us to present a scale-plan and usually clients will have to have that professionally drawn. Gone are the days when we could draw something up and the Land Registry did the rest. Howard Gibbons

Swim for Pixie 2011 We are holding a charity swim to raise money and awareness for FSID (Foundation for the study of infant deaths) on 12th February 2011. Our daughter Pixie Belle passed away suddenly on 3rd July 2010 aged just 13 months. The past 6 months have been so horrendous for the whole family that we decided to focus on something postive and the idea of the swim came about as Pixie loved the water so much. We spent 8 months in Brunei, Malaysia and she was in the pool almost everyday. We have 36 swimmers taking part in the 24 hour swim, 22 of which are serving soldiers the rest being family and close friends. We hope to achieve the same distance as the London marathon as many times as we can. The swim will take place at Wattisham station where my husband is currently based with the Army Air Corps. We already have well over £2000 in sponsors and we hope to achieve our target of £7000. We are looking for donations of not only money but drinks for the swimmers such as energy drinks, bottles of water and cans of drink. We also need fruit and snacks and would like to have a printed t shirt for everyone involved. If there is any way that you could help with any of this it would be so much appreciated, Please help us to raise awareness and help find a reason why so many beautiful babies and children die each year and help us to support the familes affected by such a tragedy. Italian Ristorante The White Hart Inn Fidelis Lunch Bunch at Bridge Farm Barns Being able to combine a light lunch with some retail therapy, in one place and not far from Hadleigh, had a definite appeal to several Fidelis ladies. So it was on a wet, dismal day that a small group of Fidelians headed for Bridge Farm Barns (formerly Corn Craft) to forget the miserable weather and enjoy the tasty home cooking on offer in their tea room. With a wide range of dishes on the menu there was something for the famished, dieters, vegetarians and healthy diners. If the first course didn’t fill all the gaps, or you happen to have a particularly sweet tooth, there are always plenty of high calorie naughties to satisfy. Sadly, no one succumbed to that temptation. However, having enjoyed a leisurely lunch without over indulging, the diners were tempted to look at and buy the gifts, novelties, and cards displayed on two levels of the same barn. The Lunch Bunch looks forward to discussing everything under the sun at a different venue in a few months time. Jan Devey

Happy New Year to all! Due to rising pupil numbers, we have appointed a new teacher, Mrs Wadsworth, and we wish her a very warm welcome! Mrs Wadsworth is teaching a new Year 1 class and has settled into the school very quickly. Mrs Wadsworth’s class have been learning all about holidays and journeys to faraway places. Well done to the Year 6 basketball team. They took part in a tournament at Hadleigh High School. As usual, this was organised brilliantly by the School Sports Partnership. Thanks to Mrs Scahill the School Sports Co-ordinator and the High School students who refereed the matches. Our children performed well as a team, encouraging one another and approaching each game with a positive attitude – well done Year 6. The final results are in and the league table is complete for last term’s football league. We are delighted that the St Mary’s football team has emerged as league champions! The children should be very proud - they showed great skill but were also good sports. The children throughout the school have contributed recipes to a new cookery book produced by the Parent Support Group. There are lots of ideas for delicious dishes to suit all tastes! Copies of the cookery book can be purchased from the school office for £5. Mrs Garland, our languages teacher, has just returned from a visit to our new partner school in France. In a few weeks, we will host a French teacher at St Mary’s. This exciting project is an opportunity for teachers to share good practice and resources. Also, we will be finding ways for the children to communicate and get to know one another, for example by using letters, film and computers. The project will help our children learn French and find out about French culture – we can’t wait to get started! The picture below shows some of the children from our partner school. More details will follow next month!

The breakfast club have been very busy in recent weeks! They have participated in sporting activities, such as ten pin bowling and short tennis, as well as craft and art activities, including winter art scenes, making gift boxes and Hama art with beads. Also, they have the chance to use the computers for games or research. Breakfast club starts at eight o ‘clock. Contact the school office for further information. The school needs a new Midday Supervisor for Monday lunchtimes. We would also appreciate cover supervisors to help out when one of our Midday Supervisors is absent. If you are interested in working as a Midday Supervisor, please contact the school office. New Midday Supervisors would need to complete a CRB check.

Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee Last September the Committee made the important decision to increase the value of the Christmas Voucher to ÂŁ8.00 and have been delighted with the tremendous response to the Christmas Appeal which raised ÂŁ4315.00. This magnificent sum has fully funded the issue of more than 500 vouchers to the over 70s in Hadleigh. The Committee would like to thank very much indeed the many businesses and organisations which have given so generously. A special thank you goes to the following major sponsors; Hadleigh Thrift Shop, Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association, Franey, Rand and Pest House Charities, Roma International Plc, Jim Lawrence, Hadleigh Castings Ltd and The George which donated the proceeds of the charity New Year's Eve Party. A big thank you goes also to the loyal team of voucher distributors without whose help it would be difficult to operate. There are vacancies for distributors in various parts of the town and if you think that you may be able to help please contact David Stokes. Finally, anyone who has lived in Hadleigh for 6 months or more, will be aged 70 this year or has already attained the age of 70 but has not received a voucher previously and would like one should write, giving name, address and date of birth to David Stokes, Ravenbank, Upper Street, Layham, Ipswich IP7 5JZ. The Committee would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Very Happy New Year

Hadleigh’s Part in English Literary Treasure This year marks the four hundredth anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible. Faithful and accurate to the divinely inspired original manuscripts this jewel of the English language, published in 1611, endures today in the hearts and hands of Christians throughout the world. In a recent BBC documentary, the Jewish historian Simon Scharma said of the Authorised King James Bible, ‘(It is) the version which...has defeated all attempts at vulgar modernisation. Beside the Kings James Bible, newer versions look like manuals of plumbing’. He continued to say that ‘Those who translated it are (largely and) undeservedly forgotten’. It is not commonly known that five men associated with Hadleigh were influential in the production and translation of this most scholarly work. In celebration of this anniversary and in memory of those all but forgotten men, we invite you to join with us in the Guildhall at 3pm on the 19th February to hear Dr. David Allen of the Trinitarian Bible Society give a talk entitled, ‘The Learned men of the Authorised Version: Hadleigh’s Influence’. All are welcome and the event is free. We hope that you will join with us. For more information please contact: Caroline Kent on 01473 823671 or caroline@suffolk-life.org.uk

Melanie’s Minding Melanie’s Minding is a home based, Ofsted registered, childminding service located just outside Hadleigh in Upper Layham. I was born in Ipswich and, some thirty five years later, having settled with my family in Layham, I am pleased to be able to offer my home and care for children of all ages, from birth, through the early years and to pre school and beyond. Full and part time places are currently available. I also offer before and after school drop off and pick up for children at St Mary’s Primary school. As a mother (and personal secretary to a Member of Parliament in a previous life!), I understand the demands of meeting a happy home and work life balance – as a childcare provider I will work with parents to support their needs whilst catering to their children’s learning and development in a warm, loving and fun-filled environment. Relevant qualifications are important and reassure parents of the standard of childcare their children can expect to receive from me. I have a Diploma in Childhood and Youth Studies and am fully qualified in paediatric first aid. Ofsted require me to be appropriately trained in providing home based childcare to include aspects in safeguarding children and food hygiene. All of this and I am an expert with a glue stick and in the making of chocolate crispie cakes! Outdoor play and adventure form a large part of the daily routine – with a large and exciting garden to explore and the wonderful countryside just outside the front door, wellie walks, bug hunting and nature trails are a must. Working with local families, creating links with other childcare providers and offering a professional, personal and high quality service, I hope that if you are looking for a childminder, or know someone that is, that you will be in touch with Melanie’s Minding. Wait for new facility could almost be over A two-year wait for Hadleigh residents for their brand new community facility may soon be over, councillors are due to hear this week (January 13). In 2009, Babergh had to delay building work on the £2.4m two-storey unit comprising a dance studio, gym and a community room, in order to comply with what was then a comparatively new piece of legislation. A provision in the Commons Act (2006) meant that the Council had to delay any building work to allow a two-year period to elapse during which applications could be considered as to whether some of the land needed for the facility could be classed as a ‘ town green’. Members of Babergh’s Strategy Committee will be considering a report which shows that to date no such application has been made and that in the event of a number of other outstanding issues being addressed between now and April 2011, building work should begin in the summer. The reason that permission is being sought in January – even though nothing will happen on the site next to Hadleigh Swimming Pool for a number of months – is to ensure that there are minimal delays once the project can finally go ahead. It is hoped that the new facility will be open to the public by the summer of 2012. According to Cllr. Nick Ridley, Chairman of Babergh’s Strategy Committee “I am optimistic that we are getting closer to realising the dream of a first rate community facility that attracts a wide range of local people. After all, we have always maintained that Hadleigh deserves better. “The £2.4m budget has been earmarked specifically for the new facility (and so is not ‘new’ money) and is in addition to the £500k refurbishment of the changing rooms and reception area of Hadleigh Swimming Pool. “This shows our commitment to providing good quality facilities – of all sorts – for the people of the town and the surrounding villages”.

Giffords Park flood, drawn in 2004 The Waxwings seen in Hadleigh at the end of December brought my local patch list for 2010 to 118 species of birds seen in the area. Not beating the 131 seen during 2002. The Giffords Park site helped in getting that high species list. 110 bird species I saw at Giffords in 2002, waders put in a good show during that autumn, Ruff, Pectoral Sandpiper, Woodsandpiper, Spotted Redshank, Little Stint, Jacksnipe and Knot. Little Gull, Artic and Black Tern, Osprey and Marsh Harrier and a pair of Garganey Ducks. Away from Giffords I found a female Bufflehead (a North American Duck) at Layham Pits, in Aldham Long Eared Owls and a Bufflehead at Layham Pits Short Eared Owl were also seen. The Little Egret and Buzzard were still rare birds in 2002 so seeing both those species in 2002 made that year one of my highlights of my local patch. Lower Brett Valley 16th January: 800+ Wigeon, 400+ Teal, 170+ Pintail (a site record), several Shoveller, Shelduck, Mallard, only 2 Gadwall, 2 Tufted Duck, 2 Little Grebe, 4 Egyptian Goose, Greylag and Canada Geese, 100+ Lapwing. Again a Peregrine Falcon was seen preening at the waters edge, not short of food with all these wildfowl here. How many Waxwing have you seen in the area? I can be contacted by email: jerry@keithavis.co.uk Jerry Oxford

Hadleigh Healing Society We have seen on TV news the pictures of the devastation caused by floods and mud slides in Australia, Brazil and Sri Lanka and the feeling of utter helplessness the victims must be feeling. To lose all one’s belongings and just have the clothes you stand up in. Can you imagine the pain and anguish. This past year has seen such extremes of weather conditions around the world. We all need to count our blessings and send our thoughts out to these people. Any help that can be given whether it be financial or by donating clothes, blankets etc. makes the victim feel that there are people who are concerned about their plight even though they are thousands of miles away. We, the healers, at the Hadleigh Healing Society try to help others in need, whether it be physical or emotional pain. Do not be alone and isolated, telephone and arrange an appointment (01473) 823282 or log on to www.hadleighhealingsociety.org. Let us help YOU.

One house to house took place and the float with Father Christmas appeared in the High Street on Christmas Eve. Everyone was very generous And Rotary thanks very much indeed all those who donated both to the house to house and to the street collection. The total collected this year amounted to £703.26 and this has been distributed to the following charities; East Anglian Air Ambulance, Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding, Hadleigh First Responders and Shirley's Wish. The Club wishes also to thank a number of local businesses which help every year in various ways ensuring the smooth running of the event; Ainger Holbrows Ltd, MW Partidge & Co Ltd, Hadleigh Castings Ltd, Mr F Pratt and Press Gang CLUB EVENTS: The first meeting in January was a Special General Meeting at which the following officers were elected for Rotary year 2011/12 ; President - Michael Sands, Vice-President - Ronald Austin, Secretary - Derek Cranston, Treasurer - Roy Watling. Also early in January the annual champagne breakfast was held at the George Hintlesham with most members and partners enjoying an excellent meal. Members would like to thank all the staff for looking after them so well. SPEAKER: The first speaker of 2011 was Club Member, Glenn Abbassi, who brought the club up to date with her travels for the Anthony Nolan Trust. She is one of 30 couriers who transport stem cells in this country and around the world. She has completed 131 trips of which 20 were during the past 6 months visiting Germany, Portugal, France, Cyprus, Norway, Denmark and Thailand. There is no time for sightseeing with journeys usually incuding an overnight stay at an hotel close to the Hospital, Stem cell pick up and an immediate return to the airport.Couriers are all volunteers and whilst trips may be stressful, sometimes arduous they are very satisfying when stem cells are safely delivered. Glenn followed this brief update with an account of a charity cycle ride which she undertook in 1996 from St Petersburg to Moscow. It was a distance of 450 miles on very poor roads and tracks. Overnight stays were sometimes campsites with very primitive conditions and the hotels were not much better. They cycled between 80 and 120 km each day and often she felt like giving up but always summoned up enough energy to finish. The last day saw the longest leg and it teemed with rain all day providing horrendous riding conditions but there was a great sense of achievement when she eventually rolled into Moscow. In all she raised £2500. MEMBERSHIP: This month members were very pleased to welcome Michael Green into the Club. We trust that he will settle in quickly and enjoy all that Rotary has to offer. Anyone wishing to find out more about Rotary will be very welcome to attend a meeting - just call the tel no at the end of this article. David Ford 1950-2010 Thank you to everyone for the wonderful and numerous cards of sympathy and support, to the many people who stop and speak to me when I'm out with words of comfort (and a Hug). Its nice to know so many people care. I would like to say special thanks to Mum, Mandy and Ian Sparkes, Graham and Pam Rolfe, Tony and Lorraine Ashton who were there for us over the last 20 months, and their continued support at this difficult time. Also special thanks to my dear brothers and sisters in law for their support and kindness. There was a wonderful turn out for the funeral service and thanks to all those that attended and for donations given in David's memory. Claire Ford

News from The Station Hello readers, and welcome to this month’s edition of news from the Police Station. We are now in that time of year when many of us would have made (and broken) New Year’s resolutions. I know many of us would have looked to increase exercise, eat or drink less, or even look to save money for important purchases. After all, it is not uncommon for us to make resolutions that affect us personally, and forget others. For the next 12 months, I ask for us all to widen the field, and think about what we can do to help ourselves, and the community. I would like to see more people leaving their cars at home when they only need to pop out for a loaf of bread or a pint of milk. This would alleviate the congestion in the High Street, reduce pollution, free up parking spaces in the car parks and reduce the need for motorists to abuse the single yellow lines in the street. In turn this would free up our time and we could concentrate our patrol time on dealing with wider community issues, rather than issuing parking tickets. I would like to see dog walkers take more responsibility for their animals. We know that some dogs are over friendly, or even pose a threat to people or other animals. If you know you have a dog in this category, please keep it on a lead. Whilst reported incidents of dog bites are low, we have seen a steady increase over the years and we do prosecute owners who do not take proper control of their animals. On a similar tone, we have noticed that dog fowling continues to be a problem around the Town. It does not take long to pick the excrement up in a bag and dispose of it in one of the many dog bins around the Town. It is unacceptable to leave the mess for someone else to walk in, and just as unacceptable to place the faeces into a bag and leave the bags in open spaces. On the spot fines can be issued to owners by us or the Council, and whilst the bags are generally cheap to buy, we have a large supply at the Police Station free of charge for those who would like to pop in and collect some. I would also like to see us all take an active part in helping reduce antisocial behaviour around the Town. Many of us have the ability to engage with sections of the community who are either the victims or culprits of persistent ASB. Some of you may have the resources to help the regular offenders with diversionary activities, or might be able to get involved with the Porch Project at St Mary’s Church, or even the Hadleigh Entertainment’s committee. Making a small contribution can have a big impact for the whole community. We have a very respectful youth community in the Town, but many of them are bored. Whilst we continue to work with our partners on a regular basis to reduce the issues, anti-social behaviour is a social problem. Whether you are a parent or a teenager, young or old, you might have the skills to help draw the community together, and I ask anyone interested in helping in the community to contact me at the Police Station. It is worth reminding you all that these may often seem like small problems, but we are tasked as a team to investigate every community issue brought to us, and to find solutions where possible. If we all put a little bit more thought into our daily activities, your Safer Neighbourhood Team could spend their time on more pressing priorities. The next Safer Neighbourhood Team priority setting meetings are on Wednesday 16th February 2011 at Hadleigh High School, and Wednesday 16th March 2011 at East Bergholt High School, both start at 7.30pm and are open for all residents in the Babergh East area to attend. As ever, I am always open to invitations, questions, and comments and ask that you contact me on the details below. Beaumont School

Delightful Dual Registered Nursing and Residential Home offering care to 34 residents

MEMBER OF THE REGISTERED NURSING HOME ASSOCIATION

Beaumont has had a very exciting start to the new term. The school was lucky enough to be visited by a number of teachers from other countries including France, Norway and Sweden. These teachers were here to attend the first meeting of the European funded Comenius Project. Beaumont school has been involved in this project in the pass and is now embarking, as a lead school, on forging new links with various European schools new to the project. The Comenius project aims to develop knowledge and understanding among young people and education staff of the diversity of European cultures and languages. It aims to help young people to acquire basic life skills and competences for their personal development, for future employment and for active European citizenship. The focus for the participating schools will be the work that goes on in Early Years education (Nursery and Reception classes). At Beaumont we believe that Early Years education is of vital importance in a child’s education. It forms the building blocks of skills and knowledge that can be developed in later years. Here at Beaumont we feel privileged to have excellent Nursery and Reception classes and feel we can share our good practice with our European neighbours, at the same time as learning from their strengths. During the project the schools will undertake study visits to partner schools, observe demonstrations of good practice and trial new ideas. As you may be aware Suffolk County Council is in the process of changing the arrangements for Early Year’s admissions. This means that we currently have some spaces available in our popular Busy Bear’s Nursery. Your child is able to access government funding and start in our Nursery the term after they turn three, the next intake being in April of this year. In our Busy Bear’s Nursery class the children learn through play. We provide a stimulating learning environment, where the staff work in partnership with the parents to support the child’s developmental needs. We have fantastic facilities in large bright and airy rooms. The ‘messy’ room having sand, water, painting, play-dough, drawing, puzzles, counting objects and many more... The carpeted story room has books, computer, CD player, wooden blocks, train tracks and car mats. Our large garden is well stocked with bats and balls, obstacle course, wooden blocks, tricycles and role play houses. If you are interested in your child attending our nursery, please contact the school to arrange an informal visit where you can meet the nursery teacher and have any of your questions answered.

The Hadleigh Historian Thankyou for your response to The Hadleigh Historian Issue 1, which has been a sell-out in Hadleigh. I have received many favourable comments, which show that you have found the magazine of interest, so much so that orders for future issues have already been made. I have been giving talks about the history of Hadleigh for over 15 years but ill health has stopped me making future commitments that I might not be able to keep. Production of The Hadleigh Historian provides an outlet for me to continue research into the history of the town and its surrounding countryside. This is not a profit-making venture and I have been fortunate in that both Hadleigh Town Council and Hadleigh Thrift Shop have made grants towards some of the printing costs. The magazine is published evert two months and contributions in the form of personal reminiscences or original research are most welcome. Local history enthusiasts have already promised articles on a variety of subjects and later in the year a survey suggested by Roger Young will be conducted of your memories of shops in the High Street. The main article in Issue 2 (February-March 2011) concerns The Pest Houses, which were set up in the 18th century as Hadleigh’s answer to smallpox. The three series continue by looking at a map dated 1758, which is possibly the first that features the whole of Hadleigh; the home of a gentlewoman at the end of the 17th century; and 1842 extracts from Dean Knox’s diary. The Hadleigh Historian Issue 2 is now available from Keith Avis and from The Idler Bookshop, price £3.00 Sue Andrews

The Layham Potter

Letter from Layham Parish Council Elections Below is a record of the main matters discussed at the parish Council meeting of Wednesday 8 December 2010. • After about 18 months of work a final survey of the proposed pavement improvements along Benton Street the cost has been found to be prohibitive in the current economic climate. The findings and proposals are now logged with Hadleigh Town Council and Suffolk County Council Highways Department until circumstances change and a new opportunity arises for the work to be done. • One of the allotments in the Gardeners’ Close area is to be offered to the person at the top of the waiting list following the removal from the village of the present occupier. • It was noted that salted grit had been removed from the bin at the top of Mill Lane, thus cutting down the amount left to be used on the roadway. It was agreed to place a notice in the HCN requesting people not to take grit for use elsewhere and asking for proposals as to where new grit bins might be placed. • Planning. There were no objections to the proposed dry fenced riding area at Holly Lodge House provided lighting was not installed. • It was agreed to publicise in the HCN and by flyer the coming Parish Council election which will be held in May. It was thought appropriate to try to attract ‘new blood’ onto the Council. • Than you notes are to be sent to Pam Walker and Lester Bennett thanking them for their generosity in continuing to deliver the Hadleigh Community News to a number of Lower Layham addresses. • The Layham precept of £8,500 for 2011-12 was approved and sent on to Babergh Disrict Council. This is the sum raised by the Parish Council through the Council Tax. • A note is to be placed in ‘Letter from Layham’ in the HCN reminding dog owners that it is their responsibility to keep their pets on leads when walking through residential areas or near to where game birds are raised. • An enquiry has been received from the Old Queen Social Club charity as to whether it may be suitable to use funds raised locally to have made and erect a village sign. This will be discussed at the next meeting.

In the November issue of HCN was an appeal for information about a potter who worked in Layham in the 1960s and 70s. More than a dozen people shared their memories of a gentleman named Bill Brownhill. Bill lived with his wife and two daughters in the house opposite the now closed Marquis of Cornwallis public house. The house, now re-named Butterfly Hall, was known as Holly Lodge at the time. Bill had a studio built onto the top end of the building by P.A. Keeble and Sons the builders of Raydon where he carried on his craft. The extension was large enough for evening classes to be held there and Janet Blackwell (nee Frisby) was one of the pupils. Lee Oliver believes that her father (Peter Dodson) may have been another as he certainly worked there in his leisure time, achieving sufficient competence to then set up his own small pottery workshop behind his cottage on Upper Street. Bill produced mainly earthenware for domestic use and his trademark slip decoration of yellow ears of wheat on a brown ground is to be found in many local homes to this day. Mr Tribe, a retired vet, has a casserole which has been in use in his kitchen since 1965! Mr. Tribe also commissioned individual commemorative tankards to be made to mark his brother-inlaw’s progress through the police force – the first when he joined and the second and third when he was promoted to Sergeant and finally to Inspector. There is a nice story behind the large bowl in the photograph. It is owned by Janet Blackwell and was apparently presented to Mrs Emily Groves (Janet’s grandmother) of Lower Street, Layham who, in 1966, at the age of 94 was the oldest person living in the village. Several people tell of Bill’s bad accident when he stepped into the High Street outside Partridges Hardware shop into the path of a lorry and both legs were quite badly injured. After this accident Bill and his wife moved to the old Groton Rectory and, according to Percy Fletcher of Edwardstone, set up a workshop and kiln in the outbuildings. Jim Hill remembers Bill being a playing member of Hadleigh Cricket Club.

Cormorants The cold weather either side of Christmas drove birds inland in search of food. Peter Garnett caught this group of cormorants with the camera in his mobile phone on the large horse chestnut tree beside the River Brett at the mill. It is not uncommon to see one or two cormorants venturing up-river but eight in one place could be a record

Layham Playgroup ‘Playgroups Warm Winter Welcome!’ Welcome back to all our children after what was a very snowy & icy Christmas break, we hope you are well rested & ready for some exciting, fun activities. We wish a fond farewell to Joshua & Taylar as they move up to ‘big school’ & welcome our new starters Oliver & Isabelle & their families. We hope you enjoy our time with us & soon feel part of the fantastic ‘extended’ Layham family. To settle everyone in we have had a fun & very enthusiastic time talking about our Christmas holiday & the presents we have received, which has led nicely into our early term theme of Winter. We have enjoyed looking at the changes to our surrounding countryside with walks down the lane, looking at & feeding the birds in the garden & making our own snow & ice! Craft activities have followed a similar snowy feel with some very creative interpretations of Winter from our budding artists. Our thoughts & activities for the second half of the term will be themed around China, followed by the theme of ‘family’ & people who are close to us. We will start our Chinese theme celebrating Chinese New Year on 3rd February. 2011 is the year of the rabbit & no doubt our own little bunnies will be speedily bounding towards the role playing area for the eagerly awaited Chinese restaurant. This is a perennial favourite with the children where we experience some brilliant improvisation & role playing, followed by sampling some healthy Chinese food at snack time, those noodles get everywhere! We understand the daffodils the children planted, are growing well as part of the Marie Curie ‘Little Pots of Care’ scheme we participated in last term & after the success of the Children in Need coffee morning we have decided to participate in ‘Big Yellow Friday’ on 4th March. The Children’s Liver Disease Foundation is a very worthy cause, so watch out for details of a fun packed day with yellow themed food & crafts. Layham Playgroup is a feeder group for all three Primary Schools in Hadleigh. Bringing London buyers to the countryside Hadleigh estate agents, Morton Smith & Sands, are demonstrating just how seriously they take the responsibility of marketing properties in Hadleigh and the surrounding area, by establishing an office in London. “We are delighted to have representation in London,” say James Morton-Smith and Lee Sands of Morton Smith & Sands. “We see this as a positive move in developing even stronger links within the national and international property market.” “Hadleigh and the surrounding area have always Annette Reeve attracted a large number of purchasers from London and the home counties. This area is especially popular with families escaping the overcrowded comparatively expensive city and suburbs, downsizers, second home-owners and retirees. An office in London is a natural step for us in providing an even better local service. From London we will be concentrating on achieving the maximum coverage for our clients’ properties and we will also be strengthening further our connections with the best London based relocation companies,” they explain. Nick Churton The Mayfair Office in Thayer Street, just 5 minutes’ walk from Oxford Street, is ideally situated in the heart of the West End. “By establishing an office at such a good London address, we can ensure that buyers are introduced to us at the very start of their property search,” say James and Lee “We are often asked by vendors about marketing in London. Now with an office in the West End, we can proudly say we are Hadleigh and the surrounding area’s London agent!” they say. The Mayfair Office is headed by Nicholas Churton, one of the foremost London based Susan Hawkins marketing experts for country property, Trained by Chestertons in London, Nicholas went on to establish the London office of a national firm of agents and is the only estate agent to have held the position of property advertising manager at Country Life magazine. For details on how Morton Smith & Sands and their new London office can introduce house sellers to a wider market, please call James Morton-Smith and Lee Sands on 01473 828121, or Nick Churton in London on 020 7467 5333.

Babergh’s award scheme, which is now in its 19th year, aims to highlight the work of individuals and groups who make a real difference by consistently working for the benefit of their local communities and schools. All the winners were notified before Christmas and have been invited to a special awards ceremony to celebrate their achievements and to receive their award on 9th March. Jill Barton, Babergh’s Community Development Officer, said: “Babergh’s Community Award scheme has been running for 19 years and this year we again received a bumper bundle of nominations. “All of our winners have shown great enthusiasm and dedication and these awards are Babergh’s way of thanking them for keeping our communities alive.” Mark Murphy, from BBC Radio Suffolk’s Breakfast programme, will compere the awards ceremony which is to be held on Wednesday 9th March, at the Stoke by Nayland Club and is again sponsored by Prolog of Sudbury for the tenth year. A list of local winners follows: SUE WARD – NEDGING WITH NAUGHTON SUE has been at the heart of activities in the Nedging community for the last decade since she moved into the Village. Sue initiates events and inspires others to join in and contribute to the regular events which give great pleasure and help to bring local people together socially and build community spirit. Sue ensures that there is a social event at least once a month and works hard to include as many people as possible, particularly those who live alone. Many of the activities take place in the Village Hall to which Sue and her husband devote a great deal of time. Thanks to Sue’s efforts the Village enjoys an annual dinner and summer barbeque together with games evenings and other social events. Community group visits to theatres, gardens and stately homes are also on Sue’s agenda and she plays a significant part in contributing to the successful annual produce show, May Fair and other local events. Sue’s most significant contribution to the Nedging community is the care she displays in the support of anyone who has suffered a bereavement or serious illness. Sue’s nomination was accompanied by letters of support signed by over 80 villagers and we are told “Sue’s bright cheery manner and unceasing love of people binds our community and she fully deserves to be recognised as a local hero”. MICHAEL WATTS – HADLEIGH RUGBY CLUB MICHAEL WATTS is the lead coaching co-ordinator at Hadleigh Rugby club and is awarded for his endeavours to develop the playing, communication skills and character building of the young individuals in his charge. Mike came to the Club five years ago as a parent wanting his sons to learn the game. His enthusiasm was infectious and he soon volunteered to become a coach himself and persuaded several other fathers to join him to enable more children to take part. Mike was instrumental in introducing the “Player of the Month” awards and “Most Improved Players” awards. Two years ago, he took on the role of overall coaching co-ordinator - a unanimous decision by all the coaches and parents. Since then Mike has organised a family fun day and arranged for the very first Youth Rugby Tour to France. He now provides coaching at several local schools and the number of children who attend the Club has increased from 50 to 160. He has also increased the number of volunteer coaches from 8 to 24 and delighted hundreds of parents who have witnessed their children improving in the skills of rugby and their own personal development. The Club comment: “Mike contributes so much to the children who enjoy his company and his well organised activities and has the respect and admiration of all the parents and fellow coaches; Mike is recognised as being someone with a special character and gift to enable others to do well.” CLIVE POWNEY – SUDBURY GATEWAY CLUB CLIVE is awarded for his voluntary service to Sudbury Gateway Club where he has worked for 17 years with people who have learning difficulties and disabilities. During this time Clive has organised and taken members on many holidays and to annual camps. Prior to this Clive worked as a youth worker at Hadleigh Youth Club for 12 years and also taught Judo at Ipswich Judo Club for 5 years. Clive is a Duke of Edinburgh Award assessor and trained the Hadleigh group to Gold level, taking them to Bavaria for their For 18th February, lots of love, Adam assessment.

Happy 40th Birthday DADDY

Members of the Gateway Club tell us “Clive is cheerful, hardworking and very supportive of our Club members who all have disabilities and we think he richly deserves a Community Award.” MARION BROWN – ELMSETT MARION has lived in Elmsett most her life and been involved in many village activities and organisations. For many years Marion was an Officer and Captain in the 1st Elmsett Boys Brigade. She always had the boys interests at heart, organising many camps and a full programme of activities to keep them occupied. Marion was secretary of the Suffolk Carpet Bowls Association for 13 years and is still on the Committee. She is a member of Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band and plays at Church Services, fetes etc. to raise funds for the National Childrens Home. Marion is a supportive member of Elmsett Methodist Church and is also the Booking Secretary for the Church premises and organises monthly community lunches for Elmsett and the surrounding community. Recently Marion has taken a leading role in the Elmsett Over-60s where she organises the fortnightly sessions, trips out and the Christmas meal and party. Marion is also Elmsett’s representative for Age UK. We are told “Whatever Marion does, she does with enthusiasm and thought for the people involved.” BILL HORNE – BOXFORD BILL has been actively involved in the village community for the last 30 years and given his time willingly to a number of organisations across a wide range of activities. Bill instigated the setting up of the annual Boxford Bonfire Night which has been running for many years. He also undertook the running and organisation of the Boxford Rovers football team for 11 years and became its Chairman. Bill has also spent time with the local Cub Scouts helping them work towards and achieve their orienteering badges. He was the founder member and volunteer for the Three Parishes Response group and worked tirelessly to get the group started, spreading the word around the community. To raise funds Bill designed and produced a Christmas card, at his own expense, the proceeds of which were donated to the group. He volunteered for the Response group for 6 years. Bill is also an active member of the Boxford Drama Group including writing and directing two pantomimes, operating the lights and even making the occasional appearance on stage! More recently Bill has become an active member of the Boxford Village Hall Committee and has been involved in setting up the Village Hall’s new website where the Hall will be promoted as an attractive venue for the whole community. Bill was also instrumental in helping to raise money for the new Village Hall roof by pioneering the “Raise the Roof” campaign which raised £5,000 in donations from the village. The many supporting letters received all pay tribute to Bill’s community work and one comments: “Bill is someone who I have the utmost respect for. I am extremely grateful for his efforts with Boxford Rovers. His drive, determination and steadfastness underpinned the ethos of the Club. Many people would say they owe a little of their character to Bill.” CHRISTINE BANYARD – HINTLESHAM CHRISTINE is a well loved and respected member of the Hintlesham and Chattisham community and does an enormous amount of good work in a quiet and efficient way. Christine has lived in the village for 40 years and during that time has brought up three children whilst working as full time nurse. Since her retirement Christine has worked tirelessly for charities within the village and surrounding community. Christine has bundles of energy and she: • Ran the Burstall Playgroup for many years • Serves as an elder at Hintlesham Church and leads church services • Organises the craft workshop and the children’s Summer Holiday Club • Cooks the monthly lunch for senior citizens • Helped to organise the Christmas Shoe Box project • Cleans the playing field hut (which is always very muddy after football!) • Organised a Macmillan Coffee Morning to raise funds for the charity • Served as a member of the Community Hall Committee and Church Circle We are told “If a job needs doing Chris is the person we turn to. She is indispensable. What she does, is done willingly and with a smile. While playing a vital part in the success of the community, Christine remains very quiet and modest about her part in these many activities.”

What is it that makes yoga different from simple stretches, from pilates or from gymnastic postures? Yoga is not just a slow-motion callisthenics workout or superficial exercise routine. There is a perception that yoga is just stretching but, while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility through the performance of specific postures (or asanas). In addition, correct use of the breath (pranayama) enhances the effect of posture practice and, just as importantly, provides the link or union to the more subtle mental and energetic effects of yoga. Asana is only one of the eight "limbs" of yoga, the majority of which are more concerned with mental and spiritual well being than physical activity. In the West, however, the words asana and yoga are often used interchangeably. The Tibetan school of yoga describes yoga as a method of "tapping the pipes" within our body – with a view to freeing up blockages that can potentially manifest into physical or emotional imbalances. Of course, yoga should not be seen as a treatment for specific diseases. Ultimately it is an opportunity to see something deeper in ourselves. I spent hours getting ready With my cleavage just on show, Tastefully done, your appreciate, nothing cut to low! I met him outside the restaurant A lovely Italian place, Not sure about the handsome bit, it was a funny sort of face. He put his hand out for me to shake It was clammy, hot and sweaty, He said 'My name is Edward, but everyone calls me Teddy'. He pointed to his bicycle On the front it had a basket When he took off his cycle clips, he looked ready for the casket. I know there would no romance I didn't fancy riding tandem, The trouble with the PC date is that they are really very random. We sat down at the table And he removed his coat, His brightly coloured tank top didn't really float my boat. I could forgive the gravy stains Or the fact he just drunk water, But when they lit the candles, I could have been his daughter. So there's no passion for me tonight I'm not going to fall in love This one is more the cuckoo and not the turtle dove. I'm running out of things to try To find the perfect mate Some don't look as if they're breathing, so it's not an ideal date. I've got another email It's from somebody called Shane He says his tall with deep blue eyes, so it's off we go again!

The Importance of Languages at Hadleigh High This month our Year 9 pupils spent some time with visitors from the business world (Willis) who were able to explore, with our pupils, why being able to communicate in a foreign language was so valuable. Our visitors shared with our pupils how quickly the world is changing. Technological advancements are developing at a rapid pace and having a significant effect on how we work. The rapid expansion of opportunities for e-business within a shrinking world is driving a need for young people to develop their ability to study and utilise a foreign language. With economies expanding at a fast rate in other nations it is already a valuable skill to be able to speak another language. Our business visitors are already considering this skill when recruiting employees in response to customer expectations and the need to secure business in a competitive environment. Increased foreign trade, closer European links and the effects of globalisation will increase the demand for skilled linguists in an increasing range of languages in the future. Whichever career path young people choose, they will need the skills that make them employable in a world where recruitment is increasingly global, where flexibility and mobility are at a premium and where

there will be strong competition from well educated and linguistically qualified candidates from other countries. There are also many personal benefits associated with language learning, such as communication, travel as well as employability. In recent research undertaken by the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies (based at The University of Southampton) most learners claimed to be studying languages for reasons of personal satisfaction, such as enjoyment, fun, interest and challenge. Skilled linguists also believe that languages promote better relationships with others (individuals and countries) as well as enhancing their communication skills. The visit was a great success and enabled our pupils to consider how they will meet the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead.

‘Thanks!’ from Mr Branch Mr Branch has recently joined us as a Science teacher as well as the Year 8 Learning Leader. He would like to send thanks to everyone at Hadleigh High School for making him extremely welcome.

Healthy Ambitions Bus On Wednesday 16th February Year 7’s and 8’s will have the opportunity to go on board the ‘Healthy Ambitions Bus’. The bus will have a lot to offer for the pupils such as a Wii Fit room to encourage children to get moving in a fun and interactive way and age progression software for pupils to see what they will look like in 72 years. They will also learn about general health covering 8 health related topics and in addition they will have free smoothie bar.

Running at RHS Muddy, cold and wet, on Thursday 13th January, a few select students ran at the Royal Hospital School where they were challenged by the cross country course. The course included many steep hills, windy paths, and bumpy routes. They were demanding, ranging from 3k to 5.7k. Mr Davy took the best runners from each year group and supported them as they raced. Congratulations to all of the following runners on taking part: Year 7: Jackson Crisp (28th) Callum Morrin (7th) Oliver Peters (99th) Tommy Thorby (67th), and Kirstie Airlie (95th) Year 8: Seth Philbedge (41st) Year 10: Toby Rankin (12th) Ben Regan (43rd) Year 11: Jake Hayward (54th), Scott Macfarlane (40th), Sophie Demetriades (36th)

is too hot (as opposed to opening a window). As the ‘Big Switch Off’ begins, another exciting event is coming up for the Eco-Warriors – the launch of our very own site! There will soon be a hyperlink to it from the school site, where you can find out about upcoming events. Tournaments Hadleigh High School holds inter form tournaments for each year group. At the moment Year 10 are involved with inter form hockey. Good luck to them all. Congratulations!!! Many congratulations go to Mrs Chamberlain and Mrs Barker on the birth of their baby boys named Evan and George. We hope to see them back very soon! Year 11 Mock Interviews Year 11 Mock Interviews will be on Tuesday 1st and 8th February. Year 11 students will be given an interview similar to that of a real interview. This will help to prepare them for what will actually take place in the workplace. The aim is to give Year 11 students real practice of interviews. The students will have to: · Write a letter of application · Write their own C.V., and discover their strengths · Be interviewed and be put under pressure for tricky answers · Given feedback on how the whole thing went The students have 15 jobs to apply for (although none of them actually get one). Good luck to them. Looking Glass 135x95.indd 1

Hadleigh during 2010

The Ghost (15) £3 FRIDAY 11th FEBRUARY at 7.30 pm Based on the successful novel by Robert Harris, the plot could well be described as “Writer for hire is a wanted man!” Ewan McGregor is hired as a ghost writer to complete the unfinished memoirs of a former British prime minister, Adam Lang – played with conviction by Pierce Brosnan. Directed by Roman Polanski this is a darkly sinister film when the initial ghost writer of Lang’s memoirs was discovered dead on the beach at Martha’s Vineyard where ex Prime Minister Lang was staying. Lang is a professional charmer - beaming smiles but with a hidden undercurrent of rage brought about by recently announced investigations into his involvement with torture in Iraq. The parallels with Tony Blair and Lang spice up this story, especially relating to references to Iraq and the Central Intelligence Agency. Placard-waving protesters gathering outside Lang’s hideaway, fingers pointing, all serve to add suspense to the plot. Please note this film is rated 15.

Mamma Mia (PG) £3 (accompanied children £2)

FRIDAY 25th FEBRUARY at 7.30 pm To celebrate five years of Hollywood in Hadleigh we are re-presenting our best supported film from January 2009. “Mamma Mia” is, and always will be, a tribute to the songs and music of Abba - the film’s plot is paper thin, but who cares? If you have already seen it then come along for another round of pure pleasure! If you have yet to see this film then you don’t know what you have missed, so make up for lost time this evening! The songs and music are irresistible, and whilst the London Show is still to be enjoyed, you can avoid the travel costs by coming to our performance! We look forward to seeing you on 25th February and to celebrate our anniversary there will be a bar as well as the usual refreshments. You will find Hollywood in Hadleigh in the Ansell Centre

The Hadleigh Recorder, Roger Kennell The New Year began with daytime temperatures only just above freezing point, and the snowy spell continued for a fortnight with some schools closed. A fire in an outbuilding at Priory Hall in Benton Street was attended by five fire brigades causing the temporary closure of the road. Building work began on a green field site for a care home adjacent to the by-pass. In February, The Very Reverend Martin Thrower was apppointed as Hadleigh Rural Dean, and on the last day of the month heavy rain caused the River Brett to break its banks both up and downstream. The coldest winter for a reported thirty one years came to an end by mid March with milder weather. Works began by R G Carter on the refurbishment of the swimming pool at Stonehouse Road. Demolition of the former Citadel Press premises in Station Road took place during April, and two houses were built on the site. The effects of the volcanic eruption in Iceland was evident over the town with the lack of vapour trails across the skies, when air passenger travel was temporarly stopped. The Hadleigh May Show was blessed with fine weather resulting in an increased attendance. Mrs J Byrne became the new Hadleigh Mayor in succession to Mr L Munson. Works began in Stone Street on the new Hadleigh Bowling Club. During June, some properties flew the Cross of St. George flag denoting support for the football World Cup staged in South Africa; while the Hadleigh Cricket Club published a souvenir brochure of 231 Seasons of Hadleigh Cricket 1779-2009. A match was played against the M.C.C. July saw the official opening of the new Hadleigh Retained Fire Station in Calias Street. The car-ports for the properties in Weavers Close were demolished. During September, the Catholic Church in Angel Street reported that it was to join with Sudbury with the priest leaving for a new appointment in Norfolk. Work on the reception area, and the changing rooms costing a £1/4 million pounds at the swimming pool was completed and officially opened. October saw the introduction by BDC of charges for long term parking (£1.50) at the Magdalen Road Car Park. Resurfacing works to the central section of the High Street took place over two Sunday's resulting in a road closure. Guthrum's a clothing shop opened in the High Street, Hadleigh Maid closed their shop in George Street, but opened within Partridges Farm Shop and the former Threshers shop was being refurbished for a hairdressers. During November, The Mill Pharmacy located at the Health Centre celebrated its first anniversary, and work was underway for a new care home at Grey's Close, but The Donkey restaurant in Stone Street closed. Cold weather returned at the end of the month, and December saw snow, and low temperatures with difficult travelling conditions. There was a Christmas Tree lighting up ceremony in the Market Place on Friday the third, with Bob Shelley from Radio Suffolk. On Saturday 18th, there was a considerable fall of snow, and the following day the temperature fell to 11.8. It was a cold build up to Christmas in Hadleigh with snow laying about and icy surfaces. The above are some extracts taken from the Hadleigh Recorders annual report for the year 2010, which will be deposited with the Suffolk Local History Council.

‘Burn the Floor’ at the Ansell Centre The Suffolk School of Dance held a Latin American dance Workshop on Wednesday 19th January which was taught by Clare Clifton from the Broadway and West End show "Burn the Floor". The children (and mums who also joined in) learnt some basic Cha Cha and Samba drills before grabbing a partner and learning some more complicated moves. Everyone enjoyed learning this new and exciting dance style. The Suffolk School of Dance hopes to hold more workshops for children (and enthusiastic adults!) during the coming year. We currently offer examination classes in Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Ballet, ISTD Tap and Street dance. Well done to those students who recently gained excellent results in their Grade One RAD examinations in London and also to the Grade One tappers who all gained "A" grades in their recent exams. Would anyone believe the rapt attention Claire Horne got from the membership of Hadleigh and District Garden Club on Monday 10th January on the subject of “Garden Pests and Diseases”! It was clear that everything she mentioned chimed with us all and you could have heard a pin drop as this highly experienced speaker gave us the benefit of that experience. Claire started working at the bottom of the gardening spectrum, working first for Nottcuts, then Wyvale and moving onwards and upwards to being part of the research team for Gardening Which and now works for herself freelance. Her encyclopaedic knowledge of bugs, beetles, moulds rusts, galls and all things bent on frustrating us gardeners, or not in some cases, was truly inspirational and largely encouraging as she assured as that many of the problems were more to do with the health of the plant than the actual ”pest” itself and that generally speaking it is weak and struggling plants that succomb to complaints - rather like us humans. It was a fascinating, instructional talk accompanied by a most sophisticated system of terrific visuals showing the various problems down to the truly minute beasties, pests, moulds and rusts. There followed a lengthy question and answer session, in fact poor Claire was virtually the last to leave as the questions kept coming as she was trying to pack-up. She did emphasise that the best pest control was the thumb and finger in close proximity to said pest. Next months talk is on “Trees for Small Gardens” on 14th February and is the last for the present season as the March meeting will be the AGM on 14th March. Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts I am a sucker for trying to grow unusual plants, particularly house plants. Sometimes my efforts result in beautiful interesting plants, other times in abject failure. Some years ago at a church fete I acquired a fairly insignificant specimen labelled "Ludisia - orchid grown for its foliage". None of my collection of reference books told me much about it, a lot did not even admit its existence. Even my RHS dictionary (1951 edition) did not recognise it. It was actually there called Anoectochilus discolor, but it is now called Ludisia discolor. Anyway the plant has magnificently coloured leaves to which photographs do not do justice because of their velvety surface, and for some years the plant has continued to exist without doing anything spectacular. about 3 weeks ago I noticed that the plant was producing new growth and I was not sure whether it was shoots, or flower spikes. The plant now bears 8 spikes of exquisite small white flowers. This was a total surprise and a bit Ludisia of cheer in these dull days. I am hoping that this does turn out to be one of those plants that die after flowering. I have in my possession a silver cup that was awarded to my grandfather when he was head gardener to a Bristol merchant. A lot of newspapers have now been digitised and made available on the internet, and I have the report on the show where he won it. The show was in March 1883, and the class was for a display of pot plants in a space 14 feet by 4 feet. The display included azaleas, heaths, imantophylliums, tulips, cinerarias, bouvardias, and camelias. Just imagine the number of greenhouses that would be necessary, the energy involved in heating them, and the work involved in having all those different plants in peak condition for one day in mid March. Now we worry about whether or not we are justified in keeping one modest greenhouse frost free. On the other hand our houses are better heated now, and this makes it possible to grow a fair selection of interesting house plants indoors. Weather Records With the December figures we have come to the end of another year of weather statistics. The December rainfall was 25.4 mm (1") making the total for the year 544.6 mm (21.4"). This is over 3" less than the average since 1998. The dry period in 2010 which caused this deficit ran from March to June. The one really wet month was August. The running 3 month figure at the end of December was 133.9 mm (5.3"). This is a little bit below average, but the rain early in January is virtually certain to ensure that next month we shall be above average. The maximum temperature in December was 9 Cel (48F) which was a bit lower than normal. The minimum temperature was -12 Cel (10F) this is the lowest temperature that Kate Banks has recorded. The December minimum was obviously the lowest for the year. The maximum temperature for 2010 was the 30 Cel (86F) that occurred in July. Ground Temperature in mid January was 5 Cel (41F) which shows that it has recovered quite well since December. The question now is whether or not we shall get another really cold spell. Hints February is the time to stir oneself and get cracking. One should:(a) Sow the early seeds of both flowers and vegetables for example for flowers with protection lobelia, antirrhinum, petunia, begonia and sweet peas, and for vegetables with protection lettuce & cabbage, and outside broad beans. (b) Acquire seed potatoes (Partridge have theirs in stock. This year's Potato Day is on February 12 at Stonham Barns.) (c) Finish tidying up, and cleaning pots greenhouse etc. (d) Clear weeds in the vegetable area, but DO NOT tread on saturated ground and ruin the soil structure. (e) Enjoy the snowdrops and early flowering shrubs like jasmine nudiflora, lonicera fragrantissima, viburnum bodnantense, prunus subhirtella and chimonanthus praecox John Rye

Dear Sir Please write to: Kelvin Avis 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF or email: kelvin@keithavis.co.uk

All my thanks, once again, to Mr and Mrs Whymark who were kind enough to pick up my bag that I had clumsily dropped in the High Street just before Christmas, returning it to me safe and sound. C. Scott Fox, Layham

Dear Sir Dear Sir With reference to Councillor Brian Riley’s letter in the January edition, I wonder sometimes if the council is even aware of the terms of the gifting of East House to the people of Hadleigh by the Stiles sisters, Diana and Penelope. I am informed that the property was originally used by West Suffolk County Council, who have in turn returned it to Babergh District Council. But are the original wishes of the Stiles sisters now being ignored by the council for short term financial gain? Robert Gales

Dear Sir I have just read the full RETAIL IMPACT ASSESSMENT which has been produced (by whom I do not know, but it seems very heavily biased towards saying Yes to Tesco) to assist in the determination of the Planning Application made by Tesco Stores Ltd for a supermarket on the Brett Works site and adjoining land. The full report can be read by going online at http://planning.babergh.gov.uk and typing in B/08/00311 in the Application number box and scrolling down to the Report dated 17/12/2010. The assumption that there will not be an unacceptable effect on local traffic levels and congestion because 80% of the urban population lives within a 15 minute walk of the site, and 100% live within a 20 minute walk, is fanciful to say the least. The assumption appears to rely on the fact that a significant proportion of the urban population would walk or use a non-car mode of transport to travel to the site of the new store in order to carry out their bulk food shopping. This scenario is completely unrealistic. Do the authors of the report seriously expect us to accept that ANYONE - be they young and fit, mothers with children, or older people - in the 21st century is likely to attempt to walk for up to 20 minutes carrying several bags of shopping from the shop site to their homes? Likewise, we are expected to believe that attempting to carry several bags of bulky, heavy shopping is safe on a bicycle? By the way, I think I just saw something large and pink flying past my window! Inevitably there would be a sharp INCREASE in the number of short car journeys within the urban area which would cause congestion and carbon emissions, as short slow journeys cause more emissions that longer journeys carried out at faster speeds to alternative superstores in Ipswich or elsewhere. The routes to the Brett Works site from the populated areas within the town would become even more congested than at present. The present system works by taking cars OUT of the town instead of INTO it. It is disputable that the existing food shops are "merely performing a top-up role", as claimed in the report. For many people the CO-OP is where they purchase all of their bulk shopping needs. Many people purchase all of the baking provisions at Greggs Bakers shop. The two Butcher shops fulfil many shoppers meat requirements. It is downright misleading to claim that in the main the existing High Street shops only cater for "top up shopping" It is also highly probable that if the shoppers of Hadleigh performed their bulk shopping at a new superstore, they would also do their top up shopping at the same store, which provides them with free off street parking instead of having to try and find a parking spot on the High Street or a nearby car park. Owen Neary

Dear Sir How good it was to read the report from Andrea Neary (Community News, December 2010) in praise of the service received from Hadleigh Tyres. Hadleigh is so fortunate in having so many independent traders and retailers in and adjacent to the High Street. The ‘Wye Valley & Valley of Usk’ tourism brochure 2010 commends and thanks their independent retailers who keep their High Streets vibrant. I quote: “Thanks in no small part to a bunch of hard-working shopkeepers our High Streets are very much alive... characterised by names you won’t have seen elsewhere. All offer a personal service... Every purchase in an independent shop contributes to the viability of a business. Each successful business adds to the vibrancy of our town...” This really is the sentiment that should be echoed by all shoppers & customers of the shops & businesses in Hadleigh. M.J. Nicholls 42

Dear Sir I was particularly interested in the ‘Winter in Hadleigh 63 years ago’ article from Roger Kennell - Hadleigh History Recorder in the January 2011 edition. In 1947 Aldham Mill Hill was a narrow ‘gorge’ with no verges, cut between the fields, and this completely filled with snow during the harsh winter. As an intrepid 11 year old in my first year at Sudbury Grammar School I regularly cycled from Whatfield to Hadleigh to catch the school bus to Sudbury. I recall that in the company of Ray Mowles, we negotiated the Hill by pushing our way along the top of the bank to reach our objective. In later years, I was joined by Keith Avis, and can say that I didn’t miss a days’ school in 5 years. To my knowledge, everyone worked flat out to keep businesses and schools open, and it is questionable as to whether the same application to ‘duty’ is shown today. Keith, I am sure, will also recall those halcyon days, albeit that we had to complete our homework before going out to play with the rest of the village lads. In winter, sledging down “Hilly Meadow” was the highlight. Colin C King

Dear Sir I was much encouraged to read the letter by the Town Mayor in the January HCN. Her management approach to the likely devolution of services is commendable. Far too often the aim of Town Councils seems to be to extend their area of influence without consideration of net costs. I welcome the pragmatism shown. Roger Young

Dear Sir Ref. Tesco Application No B/08/00311/FUL Why? When three quarters of Hadleigh residents have voted against the Tesco proposals on this site. Is so much effort and money being wasted on this totally ill conceived project? Why a suitable site near the by pass (which was built to stop congestion in Hadleigh) with good access and parking is not selected is beyond sensible reason. With the billions they turnover Tesco could buy back the the Buyrite site with out a blip on their balance sheet. The old Brett Works is not the place for Tesco unless it was a small (well designed) Tesco Xpress, which may not be objected to by the majority? Especially if it allowed people to park and also use our local shops. The remaining area would make a wonderful market place like Sudbury which encourages local Crafts and Fair. And with the benefit of beautiful walks by the river Brett many visitors would be attracted to see the mostly hidden Hadleigh Heritage buildings in that area. Maybe then Hadleigh as a true Market Town would gain something from this debacle. The proposed site will not only cause traffic chaos and pollution but an entrance by a bridge on a bend would never be allowed by anybody else other than Tesco? The next thing they will be dreaming up is to knock down buildings in the High Street to gain access! So apart from the other Historic conservation and environmental issues as a (same as everywhere else) tin shed with of course the obligatory illuminated sign being built next to some of the loveliest old buildings in Suffolk is mindless. There also appears to be issues with flooding and safety? And who is going to climb up and retrieve the plastic bags from the trees (view the bushes round Tesco Copdock) and fish the trolleys out of the river? I married into a Hadleigh family moving from Ipswich 25 years ago to a lovely small town with pubs, shops and a vibrant community. Unlike Ipswich my home town which has lost its identity and looks a total sprawl now, when compared to Norwich and Colchester who have made huge efforts to blend the old with the new. Hadleigh our family’s town has not lost its charm or identity yet? But what of Hadleigh if this project goes ahead, what a catastrophe for High Street business and a blot on the landscape of this historic town the people of Hadleigh deserve originality not

conformity. Many would argue that money should not be wasted on this Tesco Fiasco but spent on encouraging small businesses and helping the workforce and people of Hadleigh with their real needs. Many seem to be bowing down to the might of big business, the word is that Tesco are coming and nothing can be done about it. It’s just a matter of time? So the question must be asked why have Tesco been encouraged when a simple NO not here would have been the correct decision at the earliest stages. Lets face it, a previous similar development was turned down on the same site and nothing had changed since. To then spend all this time and wasted effort to find that 73% of Hadleigh residents do not want this site built on by Tesco shows a sad lack of communication and understanding of Hadleigh and its residents and their needs. A more suitable area as mentioned before could satisfy all parties and bring back Tesco to Hadleigh. So what has been done to encourage this common sense policy? Or are there issues and past arrangements that we the public are unaware of? Transparency, honesty and democracy is the only solution to this unnecessary blight and I am truly concerned for all the hard working fair minded council members and staff who serve our Babergh community who will find themselves under the storm cloud of hostility which is looming large over this project. Peter Marsh

Dear Sir May I, through the medium of your Community News, offer my sincere gratitude to all members of the public who came to my aid on Monday 17th January when I sustained a fall outside Hicks electrical shop. Although events were somewhat blurred, I remember a gentleman helping me to my feet, who later checked with me in Lloyds Bank. Also, I think there was a lady with a pram who expressed concern. Later, whilst waiting for Lloyds to open, a young lady heard me calling my daughter on my mobile to pick me up and she again offered to help me across the road to sit in a local business. It is good to know that there are still people who care. Incidentally I found out later at the doctors that it was caused by an imbalance of fluid in the inner ear which can bring on dizzy spells and blackouts. Once again, my thanks to all concerned. E.A. Dear Sir A large number of your readers will have received a letter recently from Babergh Planning Department advising that further information had been received towards the supermarket application, in the form of a Retail Impact Assessment. This assessment was produced by a firm on behalf of Tesco wholly to support the application. It uses data from the Babergh District Retail Survey 2008 selectively, where this enhances the project. e.g. that a maximum need of 1500 sq m of retail floor space is recommended. What is not said is that the survey calculated that Hadleigh had a shortfall of just 950 sq m of retail floorspace, and that given the Tesco high stocking density this should be less. Estimated need 950 sq m, Tesco proposal 1986 sq m (or twice the need). There are a number of quotations from the survey but not including “it is clear that the existing proposal exceeds the quantitative floorspace need estimated in this survey”. Despite the Retail Study having identified the floorspace need, the Impact Assessment produces its own figures which effectively increases this need, thereby getting closer to the Tesco proposal. The assessment quotes from the Traffic Assessment included in the application “that there will not be an unacceptable effect on local traffic levels and congestion…”. This conflicts with Tesco’s own statement that an increase of 400 vehicle movements per hour can be expected. As current traffic surveys show an average of 350 movements per hour now, an addition in that order would have Bridge Street suffering one vehicle movement every 4.8 seconds. Therefore those people who have received a letter will note that nothing has changed. This remains a project for a onestop store; a supermarket twice the size of the town need, largely unwanted, in the wrong location and promising enormous traffic and safety problems at the expense of allotments, conservation area and environment, and a threat to High Street shops especially the Coop. To those who maintain that the High Street will not be affected it is suggested that they read Mr. R. Caley’s letter in the newsletter for December, experiences which are echoed across the country. Anyone who finds objections to this proposal should, if they have not already done so, write individually to Councillors on the Development Committee (details on Hands Off Hadleigh website). D.A. Happy 40th Wedding Anniversary

Marguerite & John Russo on 20th February, lots of love Nikki, Stuart & Tina XXX

Returning home one day in September 1996 some of our neighbours were out on the road gazing up at the roof of our house. “You have a visitor” they said. Looking up, we saw a very large bird on the ridge - our first sight of the peacock that quickly acquired the name Percy. Where he came from, no-one knew. The local vet and the RSPA were contacted and both said that it would be impossible to catch him without harming him, and that it would be best to just leave him, and he might move on again. But he did not move on. He seemed to want to settle in the Watermill Close and Brett Green area. Impressive, he certainly was; Beautiful plumage, definitely, especially when he made his full display; Handsome, Oh yes! …and always something to amaze visitors. However there were disadvantages. The screeching mating call at 4.00am in May, his liking for a carefully nurtured tomato crop when still green on the stalk, his taste for the buds of newly planted petunias. Then there was the smelly muck he left on paths and steps. BUT love him or hate him there is no denying that Percy the Peacock was part of Layham for over fourteen years. The freezing temperature on the night of 20th/21st December (-10c) was too much for him as it was for countless smaller birds. We found him on the drive in the morning, lying in the snow, his feathers still beautifully brilliant against all the whiteness. Many will miss him despite his faults.

Library Link Have your say on the future of Suffolk’s Libraries Tuesday 18 January 2011 marked the start of a major consultation entitled ‘Have your say on the future of Suffolk's libraries’ which seeks innovative approaches to running the library service of the future. The consultation encourages community and voluntary groups, businesses, local councils and individuals across Suffolk to have their say about running their local library differently and at reduced cost to the council. The deadline for responses is 30 April 2011. As a result of reductions in the county council’s funding, the library service will need to cost Suffolk County Council at least 30% less to deliver within three years. As part of the New Strategic Direction, which is being developed to help protect services throughout the current financial climate, the county council is looking for new, innovative ways of running Suffolk’s libraries. This first phase of the consultation will focus on inviting innovative ideas for running library services differently. All ideas will be reviewed, and the next phase will involve formal invitations to express interest. Read more by visiting www.suffolk.gov.uk/librariesconsultation2011 Our successful Youth Takeover (13-17 years) is on Saturday 19th February from 6.30pm to 9.00pm. The charity now has 12 shops but the Hadleigh one was the first to open 20 years ago.

Welcome to this months Police news item. I have been asked recently how the cut in funding will be affecting Suffolk Police. I hope the following will give you some insight. Suffolk is a low cost force, but in line with police forces across the county, we are facing an unprecedented financial situation. We are facing a cut in funding of an estimated £18 million over the next four years, (from October 2010). We are already an extremely efficient force with one of the lowest costs per head of population and 300 fewer people than the average of our most similar forces. Suffolk Police Authority members and Constabulary Chief Officers will be attending District and Council meetings to share plans on how the force plans to meet the required efficiency savings whilst continuing to provide an excellent policing service. The Constabulary is operating a recruitment freeze for both officers and staff, and the Business Support Review is approaching the implementation phase of creating shared support units with Norfolk Constabulary. This will provide collaborative support to our frontline services, achieving savings of an estimated £9.8million over 4 years. The Constabulary is working in partnership with Suffolk County Council to buy and share two properties in Ipswich to help reduce costs while improving service delivery. As a result of this, the Constabulary will be able to sell off premises including Ipswich Police Station, which face multi-million pound refurbishment bills in the future. The project will save £200,000 per year for the Constabulary and is being progressed now because both property costs and borrowing are low. Crime Reduction Advice: Protect your Shed & Garage by following these simple steps… • Fit a strong hasp and staple secured to the door and frame with coach bolts reinforced on the inside with washers. Use a good quality closed shackle padlock. • Door hinges should also be secured with coach bolts reinforced on the inside with washers. • Windows can be secured and obscured by fitting internal bars or grille and net curtains. • Keep doors and windows locked. • Fit additional locks to up and over garage doors. • A battery operated audible alarm can be used to deter intruders. • Security mark items of value with your postcode and house number or name. Do not leave valuable equipment unattended. • Install external lighting with Dusk to Dawn automatic sensors. • Expensive items should be chained to a ground anchor or post securely fitted to the floor. • Photographs of expensive items, a record of their model and serial number will assist in their recovery if stolen. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre Many of you who have read my past Blogs will be aware that two of our horses, namely Strikey and Kerry, have recently left the Herd and the Shelley Centre for good. For the important work to continue at the Centre, helping both new and existing Riders, who rely upon us as a means of socialising and enjoying themselves as well as receiving invaluable therapy, it is vital that we replace them as soon as possible. This important task falls upon our Stable Manager Lyn. “That’s easy” I can hear you say; with so many horses looking for new homes during these difficult times she is fending offers off at the gate. Well……No! It’s not that easy. How do I know? You should be able to guess by now, yes, I was ear wigging from my room the other day when Lyn was talking with Jan Derbyshire and Margaret about replacing our loyal and faithful friends. When looking for a new member of the Herd we have to consider the needs of our Riders first and foremost therefore, any horse or pony coming to the Centre must be of a suitable age and with a good temperament, kind and generous, used to socialising and well schooled with nice forward paces: remember; they will become part of “The Shelley Centre Family”. Many new members joining the Herd come to us on loan or if we are fortunate, on permanent loan, where they will enjoy a home for life and of course the Centre will also purchase the right horse or pony. The Centre by its very nature is a place for socialising, as much for the Herd as the People, in that activities are varied from walking with our Riders in the Arena whilst they undertake various tasks to practicing for special events such as our annual Open Day, Regional and National Competitions or taking our Riders on cross country rides. When off duty, the Herd enjoy the use of many paddocks and because the Centre overlooks the beautiful Brett Valley can often be seen, between grazing and hanging out together, watching other activities around them: hacking out with able bodied riders through the beautiful Suffolk countryside ensures they have plenty of exercise too. As you can well imagine, the Herd gets special attention from everyone with both Rider and Helper forming a special bond with their mount, although all of the Herd enjoy a cuddle because our Riders love the horses and ponies and look forward to this element during their regular visit to the Centre: Naturally, being a “Mechanical Horse” you would think that I don’t get any cuddles like the real horses and ponies but, I do, I get a pat, a hug and a polish too so I’m not left out. Looking out from my room as I go into shutdown, it’s nice to know that the rest of the Herd are having fun and enjoying their comfortable life at the Centre. December 20th Division one - The nightmare before Christmas became a reality for the British Legion A side as they were well and truly "tucked up" by the Legion Legends winning this one 10-1, Russel Hynard remains one of only two players unbeaten as he stared for the Legends. George A beat the B side in this local derby match, but can consider themselves a "tad" unlucky to loose this one 9-2, there were some great darts from the B side players which included a 180 from Pete Gooderham and Dumpy Rush, along with a 138 finish (60-40-38) from Steve Gooderham, failure to take out earlier doubles cost the B side dearly here. Ton Up for Newton Green joiners A local golf club continues to be one of the fastest recruiting in the country, with 180 welcomed to membership in the last two years. In the last 12 months Newton Green Golf Club has seen an influx of 100 newcomers across a wide range of categories. As it maintains its membership drive, it is opening 2011 with a 15 month membership for the price of 12 months. The club has been offering special deals three times a year and says the marketing tactic has proved an investment, with many of the new joiners renewing their subscriptions at the appropriate times. Chairman, Paddy Lockwood, said: “Our offers are realistically priced which means newcomers are paying an attractive, yet reasonable fee to come on board. We try and make a special effort to reach out to our new arrivals and are pleased so many go on to make a longer term commitment. “Golf clubs across the country have been wrestling with declining membership numbers, although the actual number of individuals playing the sport has been going up. “We are trying to show people that actually joining a club can take their participation in the sport to a new level of enjoyment. “We recognise the need to allow people to get into a club through a range of entry choices, which reflect varying degrees of commitment, both in terms of leisure time availability and the amount they wish to invest in their sport.” Mr Lockwood said nearly 40 full members had joined during the year, plus 16 juniors, 10 Davey pay and play members and nine intermediates (aged 18-30). In addition, a further 21 had taken up a three month deal in October, and the club was now looking forward to taking many of them on board permanently.

On 4th January the Society held its annual Golden Pellet Competition, This competition we usually run the last meeting in December but due to bad weather we had to postpone the meeting. The rules of this competition every competitor has to use one of two rifles that are provided by the society on this occassion the rifles where break barrel .177cal.with open sights. Each competitor standing unsupported has 6 shots at 1 x10 metre target and scores with the best 5,with the maximum possible score 50 points. This is a very skill testing competition as those taking part will not be familiar with the guns charicteristics. 25 members took part and the outcome was very interesting with some 40+ scores, 2 competitors however Bill & Duncan scored 44 points each. To decide on an outright winner they shot 2 more targets each, after the first target they drew on points again with 41 scored each but on the second target Bill scored 40 & Duncan a magnificent 48 points out of a possible 50 thus making Mr Duncan Selby the winner of THE GOLDEN PELLET award for 2010. This trophy is held by the winner for one year. All those who took part recieved a prize. After the competition we had some light christmas refreshments. On behalf of all the society members would like to thank everyone who donated prizes and made THE GOLDEN PELLET competition such a success. 2011 started well with the afore mentioned competition but then with the bad weather forcing some of our members to stay at home attendances fell to10 per evening but things have picked up again now and we are seeing between 15 to 25 members each week again. Its nice to report all our membership is still growing especially our juniors and Ive noticed some new guns have appeared at the meetings this year,um chrismas presents Im thinking? Our 2011quarterly competitions are now under way, and this year we have added a pairs competition. Taking part in the society competitions is NOT a compulsary part of Semer Airgun Society membership, we are a friendly group of airgun enthusiasts both male and female from all walks of life and of all abilities, our motto is SAFE AND SOCIABLE so if you feel you might like to join us why not visit us, we meet at Semer Village Hall every Tuesday evening 7.30 pm to 9.30pm you will be most welcome T Sanger (President)

Hadleigh United under 12’s continued with their Christmas traditional with a game of lads and dads/siblings footie (see photos) over the festive period. A great time was had by all and many thanks to those who turned up and made it possible. Hadleigh got off to a flying start in their first game of the year against Whitton United when a ball set up by Arran Tampion was neatly finished off by Oliver Peters to take the lead. Hadleigh dominated the first half piling the pressure onto Whitton’s defence and this paid off when Oscar Cutting had soon increased Hadleigh’s lead. The third goal came for Hadleigh when an incredible strike from the edge of the box by Tyler French left the keeper with no chance. Whitton made attempts but these were swiftly dealt with by Hadleigh defenders William Simmons, Harry Seager, Callum Morrin and Jackson Crisp. Play continued at a quick pace and Oscar Cutting gained his second of the match just before half time. The second half mirrored the first with Hadleigh gaining the greater possession. Oliver Peters gained his second of the match and set up the next goat which was slotted into the net by Jack Boyden. Hadleigh continued to push forward and Tommy Thorby made no mistake in taking the final goal of the match, Results 8.1.11 League Hadleigh Utd 7 – Whitton Utd 0 15.1.11 League Woodbridge 2 – Hadleigh Utd 1 Fixtures 5.2.11 League Witnesham Wasp v Hadleigh United 12.2.11 League Hadleigh United v St Johns

Hadleigh United Football Club

Hadleigh Tyre Group

Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd. www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Our Chairman Ken Ramsey left his position in mid December owing to a new job meaning some weekend work. The club has made great progress in the time Ken was in the chair with the completion of the clubhouse renovation being the highlight. Promotion to the Premier Division of the Ridgeons League was another highlight for a hard working club official. Obviously we all thank him for his efforts over the past two years and hope to see him watching matches when available. Hadleigh’s first match of the new year saw a young side from Cambridge Regional College at the Millfield. Josh Mayhew scored twice before the interval and then Duane Wright headed number three to give us a good lead. Cambridge fought back with a couple of goals but Hadleigh held out for a win by three goals to two. Title favourites Leiston were the next visitors to Hadleigh with our biggest league crowd for three years attending. A goal by Josh Mayhew gave Hadleigh the lead but Leiston equalised in the second half and the game ended all square. Our Reserves played their first league match of the new year at Witham. Hadleigh were beaten by four goals to one with Patrick Armstrong scoring our consolation goal after coming on as a substitute in the closing stages. The Reserves were at home to Stonham Aspal in the first round of the Peel Cup on a frosty night and a frozen pitch. We had more of the play but Stonham took advantage of their fewer chances to inflict a defeat on Hadleigh by two goals, both scored in the second half. The Ridgeons Youth team gained a great win at Felixstowe by three goals to one after Remi Garrett had been injured early in the game. A header by Jermaine Haynes put Hadleigh in front before Patrick Armstrong slotted in our second goal. In the second half Felixstowe scored from a penalty kic before Thomas Driscoll scored for Hadleigh with a superb strike for the final goal. Our Youth team then won at Whitton in a cup match by two goals to one. Deasko Garner scored twice for Hadleigh with excellent shots before Whitton reduced the deficit. In the next round we travel to Stowmarket in early March. After the snow and ice of the Yuletide period, it was the turn of heavy rain forcing postponements as pitches became waterlogged for all three Hadleigh teams. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Doug Grimwade, Neil Henderson and Matthew Pryor. Terry Adams

Hadleigh Hares Athletic Club Celebrating 25 years of Road Running, Athletics, Cycling & Triathlon HADLEIGH 10 MILE ROAD RACE The club’s showpiece event recently underwent a scrutiny by the British Association of Road Races, who work in unison with UK Athletics. Following on from this inspection the club is extremely proud to say that our race is ranked in the top 5% of races that have been scrutinized in England. Our thanks as always go to the numerous volunteers who help run our club and whom were on hand to organize this year’s event; well done to you all. SUFFOLK CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS The 12km Suffolk cross country championships were held at Ickworth Park, Bury St Edmunds on 9 January. The course was one of the toughest used over recent years, and it was certainly a challenge worthy of the county championship event. It was a very muddy course with some boggy parts that had you sliding all over the place, combined with some nice hills for the insane. Two Hadleigh Hares managed to make the event and do themselves proud, Brian Airlie finishing in 46th place with a time of 55.21 closely followed by Steve Hunt finishing in 59th place with a time of 58.49. Well done to them both. COME AND JOIN US – EVERYONE WELCOME! Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club run three sessions a week for adults (all abilities & ages welcome) one for juniors (age 8-16) & one for youths (16-25); see below for days & times – every session meets at the Hadleigh Leisure Centre: Monday Beginners 7.00 pm – 8.00pm Tuesday Junior Night 6.00 pm – 7.00pm Tuesday Youth Night 7.00 pm – 8.00pm Tuesday Ladies Night: 7.00 pm- 8.00pm. (All abilities welcome) Thursday Club Night: 7.00 pm – 8.00 pm (Intermediate / Advanced) Please turn up at the start of one of our sessions and have a chat with our coaches if you are unsure about attending.
