Top Award for Sudbury Stalwart

The 2022 High Sheriff’s Awards have been announced and the over-30’s honour goes to Lesley Ford-Platt of Little Cornard. The awards encourage voluntary organisations, charities and community groups across Suffolk to nominate one of their volunteers for services above and beyond the ‘call of duty’. For over 60 years Lesley has been involved in community organisations and activities including being a primary school governor for over 40 years, Sudbury Town Councillor for 12 years (including serving as Mayor,) a Rotarian, chair, trustee and fundraiser for several charities including Sudbury Market Town Partnership, River Stour Trust, All Saints Church Little Cornard and Sudbury Hive who nominated her. Most recently, Lesley raised £300,000 to purchase the redundant United Reformed Church in Sudbury to create the Hive Community Hub, doing this during the Covid pandemic with an absolute determination to gain the funding needed. The Award was presented by the High Sheriff, Edward Creasy and sponsors Suffolk Building Society at a short ceremony at the Hive Community Hub, attended by representatives of the sponsors and from Suffolk Community Foundation who manage the Joy Abbott Fund which generously gave a large amount towards the purchase. Lesley said: “I’ve always been a fund-raiser - since I was 8 years old and a Brownie and to receive this award is very special.”

Regional solicitors Holmes & Hills now offers a Will writing service which provides a saving D O M Ecouples S T I C with C O M M EofRbetween C I A L 17%Aand G R 21% I C U on L Tlegal U R Afees, L when making theMsame D O M E Mirror S T I C Wills • C at OM E R C Itime. A L •Married A G R Icouples, C U L T Ulong-term RAL partners and cohabiting couples all benefit from the saving. Why make a Will at all? Quite simply, if you do not make a Will the law says who inherits your estate. Most people assume that everything would pass automatically to their partner, but this is not necessarily so and certainly if you are not married or in a civil partnership, they will have no automatic right to inherit any part of your estate. Your estate may pass to the person or persons you would not want to inherit. It may result in financial hardship for your loved ones or an expensive court action. Making a Will ensures that the people you want to benefit when you die receive your estate. Holmes & Hills Solicitors are experienced to be able to draft a Will that is tailor-made to meet your specific requirements. We appreciate that some couples have ‘simple’ arrangements whilst for others their affairs may be more ‘complex’. Whatever your specific circumstances, Holmes & Hills Solicitors will be able to assist you. Couples often wish to receive advice as follows: • How to update an existing Will • How to provide for young children • How to plan for future care needs • How to leave business interests • How to provide for a disabled child or adult • What steps they should take if choosing to leave out a beneficiary from their Will • Provide for children from a former relationship • How to set up a trust • How to protect your contribution to the purchase price of a property when you live with someone else* • How to give away an inheritance in a tax efficient manner** What if you have children from a previous relationship? Making a Will is very important for couples who may have children from previous relationships and want to ensure that their money will pass to their own family. This can be a sensitive issue between couples – but it doesn’t have to be so. It is possible to draft a Will making sure that your spouse/partner is provided for in the event of your death and ensuring that ultimately your family will inherit your estate. No better time to make a Will – save up to 21% Married couples, long-term couples and civil partners all save between 1721% when making Mirror Wills, with the exact saving being subject to the complexity of the affairs. You will be advised of this at an initial meeting. There really is ‘no time like the present’ for you and your partner to make your Wills. Even if you have already made a Will, it might be a good idea to review it and see if it still meets all your requirements and accurately reflects your wishes. It doesn’t matter if Holmes & Hills did not draft your existing Will, we are still able to advise you and prepare a new one should you wish to do so. To talk to a local lawyer about making or updating your Will, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 and ask to speak with Dean Stanhope or email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk. *Declaration of Trust **Deed of Variation Couples save 17%-21% when making Mirror Wills at the same time.

The Mayor writes... March has been a very busy month, attending a variety of events and meeting some lovely caring people, now that we hopefully about out of the Pandemic; then, suddenly we are hit with the terrible, sickening, heart-breaking events that the people of Ukraine are being subjected to. I just hope and pray that a solution has been found by the time this reaches you. It is fantastic the way people have responded by donating money and essential items. It is beyond our comprehension to fully empathise how traumatised these innocent citizens must be in this deplorable carnage caused by a man who must be one of the most evil maniacs in history. I have a blue vase of yellow tulips on my windowsill to remind me to keep praying for these poor people. The Sudbury Music Festival held its 100th Anniversary at the beginning of March in the Joy Abbot Hall (Previously United Reformed Church in School Street). A wonderful weekend of music from boy of six playing the piano to a sprightly lady of eighty, who sang a hauntingly beautiful song in Gaelic. Thankfully we have some wonderful volunteers who continue to support and enable the smooth running of the whole event. Hopefully we will return to holding a dance and speech Festival as well next year. I was delighted that Jason our editor from Sudbury and Long Melford Community News came to see us on the Saturday. I planted a flowering Cherry tree in Sudbury Cemetery as part of our Queens Canopy for her Platinum Jubilee Celebration, supported by our Town Clerk Ciaran Griffin, three previous Mayors, John Sayers, Adrian Osborne also Chairman of B.D.C. and Rob Spivey, Deputy Mayor Ellen Murphy, Cllr Alison Owen, Teresa Elford, Bradley Smith, my daughter Jen and friend and Consort June Freeman. On Monday evenings I am busy rehearsing with Sudbury Choral Society ready for our concert on April 12th in the Joy Abbot Hall, we are singing Village 21 page form.qxp_Layout 1 23/11/2021 11:53 Dances Page 3 from FourDecember Coronation Anthems, and Benjamin Britten’s Choral Gloriana. Hard work, but we have a fantastic, very patient Musical Director. I must admit I am learning more and more about music. So good to sing with others after being in lockdown over the past two years. Tickets are £12 each and there will be the opportunity to have a glass of wine during the interval. On Sunday 13th March I had my Civic Service in St Gregory’s Church. To stage this event safely and successfully, the Rotary Club needs volunteers - many volunteers! Each day consists of two sessions – from 8.45 to 12 noon and 12.45 to 3.45. The volunteers undertake tasks such as guiding groups of up to 10 children round the scenarios, helping with particular scenarios, being on hand in case extra help is suddenly needed. For those staying a whole day, we provide a light lunch. If you felt able to help us, please let Rotarian Malcolm Offord (volunteer co-ordinator) know as soon as possible, so that we can plan our sessions, by contacting him on help@sudburycrucialcrew.co.uk . With Covid restrictions easing, members are now meeting regularly faceto-face, once again enjoying the fellowship and fun which they have as part of Sudbury Rotary Club. To find out more, please visit our website: www.sudburyrotary.com, email info@sudburyrotary.com, or leave a message on the Club telephone (07341 290415). Rotarian Lesley Ford-Platt

It has been a few months since I last wrote an update as I took some time off after the birth of my daughter, however, I am now back to work full time. My monthly public surgeries on Sudbury market will start up again in May, I will be there on the 3rd Thursday of May ( the 19th ) and then the following months it will be back to the 2nd Thursday of the month. I look forward to seeing you then, although if you have any issues please get in touch at any time. I would like to start by talking about the humbling response I have had from residents regarding refugees from Ukraine. The number of you who were offering to open your homes (even before the government asked it from you) has been truly inspirational and shows just how amazing the residents from Sudbury are, Businesses have also been in touch asking how they can help and I wanted to thank all of you for offering homes, transport, food and more to those who need it. The county council met at Endeavor House, Ipswich in March, I would like to remind you that any member of the public, being resident in, or a registered local government elector for Suffolk may put a question to the County Council or Cabinet. Questions must be received, in writing, by no later than 12 noon on the fourth working day before the meeting, You can attend in person or send your question in and it will be read on your behalf but it is a great way to get your questions answered by the council. I ask the council “As the ones who are choosing to prosecute families who are keeping their children at home due to COVID, what can Suffolk County Council do to protect families to ensure they are safe to make the right decision for their children and their most vulnerable” ? You can find their answer on my social media pages or please get in touch and I will send you a copy. On the 22nd of April, I will be joining James Cartlidge MP at his Employment & Skills fair at the Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard between 10 and 1.30, It is aimed at businesses who are looking for employees and for those who are out of work or those who are looking for something different, please get in touch if you would like some more information, it would be great to see as many of you there as possible. Lastly, Babergh District Council makes important decisions for Sudbury such as Planning, Housing, and Recycling / Waste. If you feel misrepresented in your views on things like New developments, Belle Vue house & Plans for the new health centre? Could you be the new Green voice for Sudbury on BDC? Please get in touch to find out more about the role and how you can get involved. You can contact me by email: jessie.carter@suffolk.gov.uk, telephone: 07955 434 411 or find me on Twitter or Facebook ‘Councillor Carter’

Facts From the Past I wonder how young people would react if they were transported in a Tardis back into 1800? Sharing a family dinner, maybe at the table within a farm workers cottage in one of our local villages. I delved into some local history books and found some interesting facts about their typical meals. We are so accustomed to having food that is from the freezer and refrigerator; two hundred years ago, if you were wealthy, you may have an icehouse. However, most people only a had a meat safe in their cellar or pantry. In our local villages most households had a pig in a small sty in their garden. All the scraps, vegetable peelings, acorns would have been collected in the autumn and stored, nothing was wasted. Neighbours would take it in turns to slaughter their pig so that the liver, kidneys, tongues, heart and the intestines called chitterlings would be shared while still fresh. The head and trotters would be boiled slowly and made into brawn or pork cheese as it was called locally. Some families didn’t own a kitchen range, so a joint of meat would be taken to the local baker. The Suffolk Recipe for curing ham was to rub the ham well with common salt, leave for a day to drain, then rub in one pound of coarse sugar, another three quarters of salt and a quart of vinegar. Let it soak in a large container for at least a month, then smoke it for about three weeks over a wood fire. Even the fat from the pig was melted down to make lard. Of course, pork was never eaten in the months of May, June, July and August, as it was considered that pork should never be eaten in a month that didn’t contain the letter r in it. My grandmother would still refuse to eat pork during those months. Rabbit and hare would be a regular on the table, chickens were more for a special occasion especially a capon, thankfully it is now illegal to caponise cockerels. Pigeons, blackbirds, ortolans, quails, rooks and teals were eaten in quite a variety of recipes that I found in a very old Mrs Beetons cookery book. I knew an elderly shepherd from Kersey who was a mean shot with his catapult, who would often manage to shoot a pheasant or partridge while collecting stones off the fields during dusk. He would also deliver milk in a heavy churn to Hadleigh early in the morning before June attending text.qxp_Layout 1 Everyone 06/05/2021 Page 20 money to help their families school. had11:11 to earn some Wine was made from berries, cowslips, parsnips, raspberries and rhubarb, most villages had at least one brewer of beer. Fruit and vegetables were only eaten whilst in season, any not used would be bottled, pickled or made into jam or fruit jelly. Basically, only beetroot, potatoes, carrots, cabbages and cauliflower were available throughout the year. It would have been a common for families to have suet pudding with jam on Mondays because the puddings were boiled in cotton bags on top of the copper that was boiling the water for the weekly wash. Most homes had a copper in the outhouse that was heated by a small fire in the base. In these times women literally worked from dawn till dusk, plus they may have also worked in the locality as a servant, cook or nursemaid. Children worked from about eight years and men who worked on the land worked with very low wages and the only holidays they had were Michaelmas Day, Christmas Day and Sundays. A farmworker in Chelsworth was begrudgingly given a few hours off to bury his wife who had died during childbirth and christen their baby daughter. People really did appreciate Sundays in those days Sue Ayres

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Babs and I missed all the drama of two severe storms this Spring. Safely shut in our room under the spanking new roof, we listened to Storm Eunice having fun outside. The loudest crash was from the field shelter in Parys’s and Tilly’s field which took to the air, flipped onto its roof and landed on the other side of the driveway. Luckily the trees and the hedge stopped it going further but it managed to destroy the fence as it went. Altogether we lost 450 meters of fencing, all on the girls’ side of the property. The two friendship groups of mares thus became mixed, but with no fencing they had enough room to roam and avoid arguments. Best of all they stayed close to the Centre waiting for Lyn to rescue them. Nobody wandered down onto the road. We send lots of sympathy to those friends who suffered more damage than we did. The Easter term has been busy with our old riders returning and the new ones learning the ropes. Here am I pictured enjoying a rare gossip with my lady riders, Evie and Rebecca, one Friday in March, and in the arena we have both Squidgy and Camilla, the Shetland sisters, working together with Buddy and Rex (respectively) on their sheepskins. Lovely to see such happy faces all round. We still operate some Covid restrictions at the moment, mainly to keep parents and carers out of the Centre due to overcrowding that can happen at the pinch points. However, guests and supporters will be welcomed on SUNDAY MAY 1st in the stable yard to start their STRIDE OUT FOR SHELLY walk. Beginning at 10.00, walkers can register with a fiver, collect the route map and enjoy the morning in this lovely bit of Suffolk. I shall ask to have my door open so that we can meet. A happy Easter to you all and may you stay safe and healthy this Spring.

Rotary Club of Sudbury Not just working locally to support our communities …

In the regular up-dates from Sudbury Rotary, we often report on our support for local charities through our fundraising activities, as well as funding projects in the developing world through the Lend with Care scheme and direct funding of primary school children in Tanzania. However, with our thoughts very much turning towards how we could support the people of Ukraine, Sudbury Rotary Club held a street collection on 5 March. By mid-March over £1400 had One of the Rotary delivery been donated and was sent on to the lorries on its way to Poland Red Cross for them to use in their work during this terrible time of conflict. However, the activities of Sudbury Rotary are only a small part of this worldwide organisation and how it becomes involved in giving aid where it is most needed, often where there is famine, earthquake, hurricane and floods. So, this month we thought you might wish to know what Rotary Car sales Service and repairs on most makes of vehicles members across the world are doing to support the people of Ukraine and Petrol and Diesel Sales Tyre, exhaust and battery fitting their surrounding countries through the work of The International Rotary Fellowship of Healthcare Professionals (the Fellowship), which is part of a M.O.T. Testing Air-conditioning servicing and recharging Taskforce in regular communication with Fellowship members in Ukraine. Latest equipment and diagnostic technology In March, the Fellowship reported that the situation worsened day by day: Free use of courtesy car or free collection and delivery service patients with cancer and other chronic conditions were being evacuated Free car valeting with every service to Poland where possible, hospitals were full to capacity with temporary beds in many places. The main challenge was treating horrific war injuries, FOR A FULL LIST OF CARS IN STOCK including many children. Trucks with medical supplies arriving in Ukraine used a system of redistributing items to various hospitals. SHOW

Sudbury Dramatic Society Under Milkwood Sudbury Dramatic Society’s next production at The Quay Theatre is Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood, on at The Quay from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th May at 7.45pm. Originally written by Thomas as a radio play for voices, there is no real plot to Under Milk Wood; we follow the often bizarre inhabitants of Llareggub, a small, Welsh seaside town, over the course of one spring day. It is funny, sad, evocative, inventive, beautiful and full of Thomas’s joyous mastery of language With a cast of over a dozen people covering an age range of parts from childhood to dotage, the majority of the cast will be playing about five parts each. Director Neil Arbon has some innovative ideas for the production and says ‘This production of Under Milk Wood is going to be an exciting team effort, in an energetic and lively version, which aims to do justice to this powerful work’. The fascinating characters in Llareggub include Mrs. OgmorePritchard, relentlessly nagging her two dead husbands; Captain Cat, reliving his seafaring times; the two Mrs. Dai Breads; Organ Morgan, obsessed with his music; and Polly Garter pining for her dead lover. Under Milk Wood is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th May at 7.45pm and tickets are available from The Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaysudbury. com or via www.sudburydramatic.com.

A planning application for a new entrance to Belle Vue Park in Sudbury has been submitted by Babergh District Council. The proposed new entrance will create an open, accessible, and welcoming space for visitors to the park. Featuring landscaping, new seating and a focal point for public art installations, the new entrance will be an attractive new space for the town and the community. The new entrance is part of a wider investment in Belle Vue Park which will also see new play areas and equipment, improved accessibility through the park as well as a new café and toilet facilities. The planning application has incorporated feedback from the public engagement event that was held in person and online in autumn last year and ongoing work with stakeholders. Over 250 people from Sudbury and the surrounding area commented on the way they use the park and what improvements they would like to see. Cllr Michael Holt, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for economic growth, said: “It has long been an ambition of Babergh District Council’s cabinet to invest in Belle Vue Park to ensure that the park remains a space for residents, families and visitors to Sudbury. These plans will not only create a welcoming entrance to the park but will better connect the park with the town centre.” In addition to a new entrance, Babergh District Council will soon be submitting a second planning application for a new café and toilet facilities, including a changing places standard facility. Over the last few years, Belle Vue Park has benefited from significant investment including a new multi-use games area and skatepark as well as new play equipment and landscaping in the children’s play area. I love live music and now that restrictions have lifted, I’m keen to start going to events again. I’ve booked tickets for some gigs over the next few months, but I’m still a little worried. I can’t quite believe things are fully back to normal. What will happen if restrictions come back in? It’s understandable to be feeling apprehensive when there’s been so much change, and knowing your rights will help you deal with anything unexpected. If you’ve got tickets to an event which goes ahead, but you change your mind about going or realise you’re no longer able to go, you have no legal right to a refund. However, if the event is cancelled, your right to a refund will depend on how you bought the ticket. If you booked through an official seller and the organiser cancels, moves, reschedules, or makes the event behind closed doors, you should get a refund. This is true even if it’s cancelled due to a government ban on large events. If this happens, contact the official seller to find out how you can get a refund. If you bought your ticket from a ticket-reselling website, your refund will depend on the site’s terms and conditions. If you’re worried about the event being cancelled, it’s a good idea to look at the terms and conditions before booking. If you bought from a private seller, unfortunately it’s unlikely you’ll be able to recover your money, even if the event is cancelled or rescheduled. We recommend contacting the seller to see what they can do. Ahead of any events you’ve booked, keep checking the information from the official seller or organiser to make sure you know straight away about any updates, like changes to the date or cancellations. Another thing to be aware of is that scammers exploit these situations for their own benefit. If your event is cancelled and anyone - whether it’s a person or a company - offers their services to try to recover money on your behalf, be suspicious. Make sure that you’re aware of the signs of a potential scam and always be on the lookout. If you need more information on how to get a refund, take a look at the Citizens Advice website. Or contact Sudbury & District Citizen Advice. We are providing advice by telephone and email Monday – Thursday, 10am – 1pm. Please phone 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org. uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www. sudburycab.org.uk/contact

Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline and Charity Shop The crisis in Ukraine is causing much hardship for the people living there who just want to be left alone to get on with their lives. These are people we support on a day to day basis, people who I personally visited in December. Many have lost their homes, some their lives. It is a tragic situation. There is also a lot of “fake news” flying around on the internet but I would assure you that everything I write, which is from direct contact with our friends in Ukraine, is genuine and validated. The photo of the buildings attached are the very buildings we visited in December when delivering the Christmas stockings to the children. Our driver Sergei used to live in a flat located in the gap in the building - fortunately he was not at home at the time of the bomb hitting. Most of this area of Borydanka now has no utilities, no water supply, no phones, sporadic internet connection and many are in hiding in cellars. Yesterday I received a communication from one of the social workers we know, it only said “I live” - she had managed to get a connection for just a few minutes. We are being asked about collections of donations to send aid to the families. We are not currently doing this because there are so many other organisations actively working to do this. We know from our experience and our direct contacts that what is needed “on the ground” is food, water, medication, specific baby supplies such as nappies and high protein baby foods. The best way to deliver this is for the products to be bought locally (or in Poland) and delivered directly to those most in need and it is for this reason that we are concentrating on raising financial aid that we can ensure is used to deliver help in the quickest and most effective way. I would ask you to please share the attached appeal with friends and family. We are also being asked if we will be bringing children from the Ukraine via our Health Respite Program and the answer is yes, when the time is right and we are able to do so. With this in mind, if anyone would be interested in Hosting a child/children we would like to hear from you now so paperwork can be completed and we can hit the ground running as soon as the opportunity allows us to do so. Lastly, one way of raising funds is via our online Ebay Charity shop. If you have anything at all that you think we may be able to sell please do get in touch and if at all possible we will arrange to collect from you. The list of what can be sold is so diverse please do ask rather than just thinking we wouldn’t want it.

Thank you to everyone for your support in these very trying times. Elizabeth Parker, Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline 01449 760343 07771 550868
