Bright future for former United Reformed Church
Sudbury Hive, a charity which supports other charities and good causes, has agreed with the URC Eastern Region Synod to buy the Grade II Listed former Christ Church in School Street, Sudbury, which closed in 2018. The building will become The Hive Community Hub, offering medium- to largesized rooms and halls which can be used to serve the needs of voluntary and community organisations and other groups in and around the town. In recent months fundraising efforts redoubled to raise the purchase price and other costs and Hive is extremely grateful to everyone who has donated, or promised, funding so that the project can go ahead. A major grant has been agreed by Suffolk Community Foundation through the Joy Abbott Fund, and in acknowledgement of this significant support the Church (which will be converted for performances and large meetings) will be known as “The Joy Abbott Hall”. Many other personal donations have been received from people in the local community, as well as from the Lord Phillips Trust, former County Councillors Jack Owen and Colin Spence (from their Locality Budgets), the Lord Belstead Trust, The Tudwick Foundation, The Hillier Trust, the Bernard Sunley Foundation and Siemens Healthineers. Other funding has been pledged by Sudbury Town Council, Sudbury Freemen’s Trust, the Garfield Weston Foundation, Colchester Catalyst Charity, Suffolk Community
Foundation through the Maurken Fund, and County Cllr Peter Beer from his Locality Budget. The charity plans that organisations will be able to hire Friars Hall, the Anthony Wheeler Room and the Joy Abbott Hall from autumn this year, when all preparatory work has been completed. Once the building is back in use, there will be more work to be done, with repairs and refurbishment taking place over time, as funding permits. Chairman of Hive Trustees, Shirley Moore said “We really are indebted to all of the local people, organisations and grant-making trusts that have made this purchase possible. There is a lot of hard work still to be done and money to be raised but our intention is that this building will become an essential venue for the Sudbury community”. Hive Trustee and Treasurer, Gareth Cole, will be pleased to hear from any organisations wishing to hire halls in the Hive Community Hub. Tel: 07771 893702 or email: enquiries@sudburyhive.org

The Mayor writes... As I am writing this whilst listening to B.B.C. Radio and hearing the latest concerns about the Covid numbers of those who are having to self-isolate after being ‘Pinged’. Although looking forward to Monday 19th and the removing of ‘Lockdown’. I am going to continue to wear a mask in certain situations, for my safety and those around me and test myself three times a week and wash my hands frequently. The past seventeen months have been unparalleled to any previous crisis during my lifetime, the untimely death of so many and the sorrow of families and friends has been devastating. We have all been restricted, confined, and hampered during these past months; hopefully, we will soon be reaching the end of this journey through a tunnel of fear and trepidation. I sincerely wish everyone a far happier and fulfilled time in the open landscape ahead. Years ago, I read this Indian Axiom: A person is like a house with four rooms; A physical room, a mental room, an emotional room and a spiritual room. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time. But – unless we go into every room, every day we are not a complete person. During lockdown I was fortunate enough to walk along the river by our beautiful Water Meadows, as I live nearby. Through my stock of art materials, I produced quite a few abstract pictures (hopefully, never to be viewed by a psychologist!). Through St Gregory’s Church and the expertise of Rev Tom Mumford many of us enjoyed services through Zoom. I kept in touch with my grandchildren through ‘WhatsAp’. I wonder how everyone would have coped without all these wonderful ways of communicating. I certainly learnt a tremendous amount; however, I still have a long way to go before I catch-up with the expertise of my grandchildren. Suffolk Day in Clare was a special event, beautifully organised and broadcast live by the outstanding journalist Mark Murphy from B.B.C. Radio Suffolk, who strove so hard during these challenging times to keep our spirits up. On Saturday 26th June I was delighted to support the A.F.C Sudbury Players Past and Present Charity Football Match organised by Ben Davis to raise funds for the ‘Frisby’ bus. Lynsey, Ben’s wife had worked so hard for this wonderful ‘Hope for Life’ bus until she lost her life to cancer. The support and love that those attending for Lynsey was amazing yet richly deserved for such a deserving lady. ‘Hope For Life Bus is one of my chosen charities. This Bus is parked at The Health Centre every Thursday, so that patients can receive chemotherapy without the extra stress of travelling to hospital. I was invited to Thomas Gainsborough School to view the G.C.S.E. and A. Level Artwork. I cannot praise this fantastic exhibition enough. Some of the students’ pictures have been displayed in our local shops. Please take time to stop and admire the talents of these students. The Heritage Centre is open again, this museum behind the Town Hall is abundant with so many fascinating facts about the history of Sudbury. Whenever I delve into our history, I find there are even more exciting facts. I recently discovered this about our Market in 1340; It was shaped in a crescent around where St Peter’s Church is now, there was the Poultry Cross, Corn Cross, Butter Cross the Butchers’ Shambles and a great variety of other stalls. The market was a magnet for surrounding villages. Prominent were the shoemakers’ stalls; customers walking miles over rough tracks conveniently wore out many boots and shoes. It would be tremendous if we could expand our market to this size once again. I am looking forward to the first concert of Sudbury Choral Society which will be in St Peter’s Church on Sunday 5th September. They will be performing ‘Requiem’ by Gabriel Faure and Vivaldi’s Gloria. We are busy rehearsing in a gazebo outside the Quay Theatre. Yet something else to look forward to as we are starting to return to normality. Hopefully, the rest of the summer will be far more enjoyable for everyone. All the best , Susan Ayres Town Mayor for Sudbury

It came as something of a surprise to Rotary members locally to see a report in our national magazine of Prince Philip’s involvement in local Rotary Clubs, in Windsor and in Scotland, where he was very much a part of the membership, even to serving refreshments and, when at Windsor, walking to meetings with other Rotarians. Noting Immediate past President of Sudbury Rotary presents the certificate and gift voucher Rotary’s motto of “Service award to Jemma Sargent. above Self”, Prince Philip is quoted as saying, “The significance of Rotary is that it has become one of the most active and effective forces on the lay side of righteousness, cooperation and goodwill. It provides … a most powerful encouragement of the potential for good.” A lot has been happening in recent months for Sudbury Rotary. We were delighted that one of the Young Photographer entries was chosen to receive a Highly Commended Certificate and a £10 gift voucher in this national competition. Jemma Sargent., a pupil at Thomas Gainsborough School, was presented with her award by immediate past President Sandra Armitage (see photograph). There was a record number of entries for the competition across Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire and her picture ‘Tigers’ was nominated by Sudbury Rotary for the virtual category, which had the theme of ‘wild nature’. Members of the Royal Photographic Society and a professional photographer were on the judging panel and commented that Jemma has “huge potential, a good eye for subject, composition and the use of colour and light.” A cream tea took place in the garden of two local Rotarians, with over 40 members and their guests enjoying scones, jam and cream, amid the flowers and the free-ranging hens! Funds raised will be added to the money being set aside for local Rotary charities. Plans for the year ahead include holding Rotary lunches on the first and third Monday each month, with a presentation from a visiting speaker or a Club member, interspersed with the usual Business Meeting on the second Monday (via Zoom), and something different being offered every fourth Monday. In August visiting speakers will include the new District Governor on August 2nd and Peter McEleny telling us more about “Signpost International” on August 16th. A garden picnic will be on offer on August 23rd where members will enjoy relaxing in another beautiful setting. In the future it is hoped that members and guests will join together with a Ramble and a pub lunch – more details in due course. Sudbury Rotary is considering proposals for Associate Membership, which would give opportunities for those of you who wish to ‘try before you buy’ before seeking to become a full member of the Club and, of course, our Friends Group continues to be involved whenever we have major events. It is also hoped that a Satellite Club could be started which would offer more flexible meeting arrangements and activities to fit around the busy working lives of younger people. As always, an invitation is extended to anyone who might wish to become involved in projects to benefit our community, new friends: and meet Whatever theand style, make size or shape of yourcome window, you’ll findus a blind that is exactly rightfind for you. Sibarita - Spain’s Organic Larder
October 20 Text.qxp_Layout 1 23/09/2020 11:33 Page 4
After its successful start, Sibarita is already looking for familyowned, artisan producers in Spain to add to its current product range, If readers of Sudbury & Long Melford Community News have any suggestions of products that they would like the team to investigate, do not hesitate to call Jack or James on 01787 323933. This is a tricky time of the year for supplies from Spain, though, because of the often quite-lengthy factory summer holiday closures. For this reason, Sibarita aims to place orders in the next week or so. Deliveries from the EU are suffering from severe shortages in the availability of transport owing to a massive shortage of HGV drivers in the UK post-Brexit and a reluctance of EU transport companies to risk delays on returning from the UK. Sibarita took a welcome break from dealing with orders online when Jack and James attended its first Farmers’ Market at Raydon, recently, generating a lot of interest in its products – the tall “Carmencita” mills of various mixes of pepper, salt and spices were a particular attraction. Alongside the national e-commerce market for Spanish foods, Sibarita believes there is room for strong local or regional suppliers that are not entirely dependent on online sales. Customers also appreciate dealing with a reasonably local business able to offer a very personal service, happy to discuss the products and provide advice. Sibarita offers the ability to collect, by appointment, and, depending on circumstances at the time, may be able to deliver the same day. With Summer now hotting up, it’s a perfect time to try Sibarita’s fantastic range of cold soups, its paella kits, its many salad products. And, if you are trying to think of a birthday gift for a foodie relative, Sibarita has lots to choose from. Readers can find out more about Sibarita by visiting the company’s official website: https://sibarita.co.uk/

Here we are in the midst of the great British summer and there are more changes afoot. Covid rules are being relaxed but we are being encouraged to stay vigilant. From 19th July we will still be wearing face coverings in the library and ask politely that our customers do the same. We will still have the NHS QR code available at the front door and the sanitizer is still there for use before you enter the building. Some of our groups are being reintroduced and we can now offer Toptime on a Tuesday afternoon at 2.30pm and Wordplay story-telling for our smallest customers on a Thursday morning at 10.30am. Toptime is a social group for adults and we hope to get a range of activities and events, including a book group, in place over the coming weeks. For now, we have planned a couple of catch-up social sessions but a fuller timetable for August will be in place soon. Call in to the library or look us up on social media or our website for more details. Both sessions need to be booked; please ring us on 01787 321595 or call in to the library to book a place. Don’t forget, our colleagues at Babergh Customer Access Point are here on a Monday and Thursday for face-to-face advice and you can call to make an appointment on 0300 1234000. Their e-mail address is customer. services@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk Our current opening hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday. We can now offer you browsing, printing, photocopying and use of our computers. You can now book a computer slot for up to one hour and you can still use our Select and Collect offer as well as all our on-line services. For our younger customers the Summer Reading Challenge will be running over the holidays so come along to sign up to this year’s event. You do need a library card to take part, so don’t forget to bring it along, or ask staff how to join up. The theme this year is Wild World Heroes. Read 6 books over the summer and earn rewards along the way, with a medal and certificate when you finish the challenge. There will be volunteers in the library between 11am and 3pm most days to listen to the children talk about their books and help them keep track of their progress. Sibarita is a new business, based in Liston, a village in Braintree District close to Sudbury. We import and distribute a range of traditional Spanish foods from family-owned producers. Our high-quality products include cooked, preserved and dried pulses, vegetables, fruits, oils and vinegars, rice, spices and flavourings, pickles, jams and marmalades and everything you need for paella (except the meat and fish). Many of our products also make perfect gifts for food lovers and many are organic. The producers are all private, family-owned businesses totally committed to products of the highest quality, retaining traditional artisan farming and production traditions developed over generations but recognizing and adopting scientific and technological advances. Our policy is to buy directly from a small number of carefully selected suppliers. To give us time to establish our new business, except for certain flavourings, we have limited our range to ambient temperature products, all plant-based for a healthy diet.

Every year, thousands of overseas students are educated at independent schools across the UK. When their school closes for half term holidays and exeat weekends, they need a great host family to provide a home away from home. Pippa’s Guardians has been providing high quality Guardianship services to international students for over 20 years and understand the value of a good home and how a host family can positively impact on a student’s wellbeing. The families we look for are welcoming and interested in other cultures. Having children of similar ages helps but isn’t the most important thing as we have many successful host families who have no children, younger children or indeed older children who have left home. Being part of a family and experiencing day-to-day family life enhances students’ study and plays a part in improving their English language. As well as receiving a generous payment, becoming a Pippa’s Guardians host family is a wonderful experience; providing the opportunity to really make a difference to a student whilst they are studying here in the UK, in many cases a very long way from home. For children of host families it can be really exciting and interesting getting to know other children who have had very different life experiences to them. For families where children have grown up and left home, it is a chance to enjoy the fun and companionship of having younger people in the home once again. Anne Weir has recently hosted a student from Singapore: “She was a delight to host, polite, helpful and a pleasure to have around. She worked hard on her school work and was very focused on her revision and the practical work she did for her food technology course. She even cooked us a three course meal as part of her school work which was a great success.” It is a marvellous and interesting way to learn about the cultures, traditions and daily life of young people and their families from countries very different to our own. Many of our host families form lifelong friendships with our students and their families and stay in touch even after they have left school for university. Host families are needed for students joining local schools this September. If you are interested in hosting a student, please contact hostfamilies@pippasguardians.co.uk
Your partner needs help with their financial affairs, but can you assist? Commonly with married couples or those in a long-term relationship they each have assets in their own name and in joint names (e.g. bank accounts and the family home). This often leads people to think that they can manage the financial affairs of their spouse or partner, or could do if the need arose; however, this is not the case. Unfortunately, should your spouse or partner become unable to manage their affairs themselves, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and you will not be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. What is needed to be able to help - To assist with your spouse or partner’s affairs during their lifetime you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means your spouse or partner will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) with a specialist solicitor. What happens if I do not have LPAs? - Many people need to assist with these matters because their spouse or partner has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident. If you want to help your partner with financial decisions and they did not have Powers of Attorney in place, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney - LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of LPA: Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home). Health and welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves. People often think that if necessary, they would be able to make decisions about where their spouse or partner receives care, what type of care they receive and whether or not they should receive life-sustaining treatment. Without an LPA in place, relatives are not able to make these decisions. Discuss Powers of Attorney for yourself or your partner - To talk to a local lawyer about Lasting Powers of Attorney, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors and ask to speak with Deborah Abbott or Dean Stanhope. www.holmes-hills.co.uk T: 01787 275275

Alan Ramos, owner of the wonderful Painter’s Cafe in Gainsborough Street in Sudbury will be running the London Marathon on 3rd October 2021 raising funds for The Clabile Trust. The Clabile Trust is a charity very close to our hearts supporting children back home in South Africa. They work with the community and families to improve lives helping in the Waterbergs area of South Africa with education, jobs and starting their own small businesses. Alan and his wife Tracy opened Painter’s Cafe in August 2018 and since then have brought a fantastic cafe to Sudbury, Suffolk. Alan, who is the chef, bakes fresh cakes daily and is behind the scenes cooking colourful breakfasts and mouth watering meals for all the cafe visitors. Alan was born in Mexico and then moved to South Africa in 2015 before coming to the UK, it was in South Africa where they met the fortunate families and young adults who had much ON 3RD OCTOBER ALAN IS RUNNING THE more enriched lives thanks to The Clabile Trust. MARATHON The London Marathon is an iconic event 2021 which Alan is currently training for when he’s not cooking in the cafe, his training has been running half marathons as well PLEASE HELP ALAN RAISE MONEY FOR THE CLABILE TRUST as finishing triathlons of all distances since joining local club TRISudbury. Alan is training with a running coach to work hard and achieve a time he will be proud of. WAYS TO DONATE Alan and Tracy have seen first hand the benefits of The Clabile Trust and what they bring to children’s lives, understanding, supporting and becoming friends with these young adults when they were living in South Africa was very rewarding knowing how the Clabile Trust had made such a difference to children’s lives and futures. The Clabile Trust exists to help disadvantaged children help themselves, by supporting their education and development to give them a better start in life. The charity seeks to help children in need wherever they might live and currently supports children in Southern Africa and the UK. To help raise money, there will be events at the cafe you will able to attend, a cake of the day where £1 for each purchase will go to The Clabile Trust, a just giving site to donate online justgiving.com/fundraising/alanramos and a cash / cheque collection pot at Painter’s Cafe on Gainsborough Street in Sudbury. Alan Romos writes: Painters Café is set in a 17th Century building bursting with character opposite Gainsborough House in the historic market town of Sudbury, Suffolk. A warm and welcoming atmosphere greets you as you step into our pretty cafe where we have plenty of seating inside as well as a relaxing, quaint sunny courtyard. Many of our ingredients are sourced locally and seasonally. Our menu offers breakfasts, daily specials, excellent coffees, cream teas and home baked cakes. We also have a great choice for vegan and gluten free visitors with their own menus. Our café is fully licensed for the sale of alcohol and everything is always presented beautifully. Painters Café is the ideal destination to bring the family, or meet a friend for morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea, we have plenty of indulgent treats to tempt you at any time of the day. When you visit, our friendly staff will welcome you and introduce you to our menu and daily specials. Our freshly baked scones and delicious selection of cakes are very often the highlight of a visit. Our Chocolate Brandy and French Almond & Mandarin Cake are well worth a taste! If you are unable to visit you can even have a bit of Painters in your own home by ordering online. The Clabile Trust exists to help disadvantaged children help themselves, by supporting their education and development to give them a better start in life. The charity seeks to help children in need wherever they might live and currently supports children in Southern Africa and the UK. Wheels in motion for cycle race through districts The full route for this year’s Women’s Tour has been announced, revealing that some of the world’s top cyclists will travel through Babergh and Mid Suffolk once again. Suffolk plays host to the final stage of the race, with this year’s champion being crowned on Saturday October 9, following a day of racing between Haverhill and Felixstowe. A scenic route will take the peloton past the historic Melford Hall stately home in Long Melford and through Babergh’s largest market town, Sudbury. Riders will then pass along the runaway at Wattisham Flying Station, an airfield spanning over 1,000 acres across both Babergh and Mid Suffolk. The route also includes Stowmarket, which had the honour of hosting the finish for stage one of the Women’s Tour back in 2019. After travelling through the heart of Mid Suffolk, cyclists will head south towards the finish line at Felixstowe. A nail-biting final is expected, as, to date, four out of six editions of the Women’s Tour have been decided by 11 seconds or fewer. Cllr Harry Richardson, Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing said: “We had a fantastic turnout when Stowmarket was selected to host the stage finish in 2019 and I hope we’ll see this again when we have the honour of welcoming back riders in October. “I know that many Mid Suffolk residents will not only want to show their support for the race but will also be inspired to take up cycling themselves. This is a great way to improve health and wellbeing and those looking to start riding, or get back in the saddle, can find advice on the Keep Moving Suffolk website.” The race is expected to be a significant boost for businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk, with Suffolk’s six previous stages delivering a net economic impact of more than £5.3m for the county’s economy. Local businesses can visit the Women’s Tour website to find out how to capitalise on the tour and the visitors this is expected to bring to Suffolk. Spectator information is also available on the website and a series of community engagement events will take place in both districts, details of which will be announced via the councils’ social media channels.
Yarn Worx, Hadleigh’s New Yarn Shop Yarn Worx, a family run yarn business which has been operating exclusively online since 2019 is set to open a bricks and mortar yarn shop in Hadleigh. Aiming to open in early September, the company specialises in hand dyed yarns and accessories for the discerning knitter and crocheter. The company only sells yarns that are ethically sourced from responsible yarn dyers around the world. Emma’s Yarn, a high quality brand from Florida is exclusively stocked by Yarn Worx in the UK and the new shop will have a wall of colour devoted entirely to this brand. Also stocked are brands such as Irish Artisan Yarn, Qing Fibre, Spectrum Fibre, Black Elephant, Urth Yarns and more. When it comes to accessories, some of the existing brands include Cocoknits, Furls Crochet Hooks, Cohana, Tulip, Lykke, Scheepjes, KnitPro, Clover, Emma Ball and many more. In addition, the shop will have a comfortable seating area which will host regular knitting and crochet classes, knit nights, knit mornings and more. This space will also be available to other craft teachers wishing to come along and teach their own lessons. Being away from the town centre there is ample free parking right outside the shop. The Grand Opening date will be announced in a future issue of the Community News and there will be 10% off in-store all weekend. Follow Yarn Worx on Instagram (@yarn_worx) for the latest updates.
Businesses encouraged to innovate with launch of new scheme Start-up businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk are being invited to take part in Innovate Local, a pilot scheme designed to help businesses grow and reach new audiences following the impact of Covid-19. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s Innovate Local scheme will offer businesses either use of a market stall in Hadleigh or Stowmarket or working space at an innovation hub in Sudbury or Eye. Business owners who would like showcase their business on a market stall but worry about taking the leap can be part of the pilot Innovate Local scheme at Hadleigh and Stowmarket and receive support and guidance throughout their involvement. In addition, businesses will benefit from a free pitch at either market for a set period, mentoring and support to running a safe and successful stall, business advice and training opportunities as well as support before and after the pilot. The first business to come to the stall in Stowmarket will be Sage & Seasalt who will be selling handmade coastal inspired sea glass & clay jewellery, artwork, and home décor from Saturday 24 July. While from 6 August, in Hadleigh market, Suffolk Style will be showcasing their range of Fairtrade, handmade and recycled goods for homes and gardens. The Innovate Local scheme is part of the councils’ ambitions to support high streets through the Invest in Hadleigh and Vision for Stowmarket programmes to help develop vibrant towns for residents and visitors to live, work and explore. The market scheme will be run in partnership with Suffolk Market Events who currently manage Hadleigh market on behalf of Babergh District Council as well as several other markets across the county. Justine Paul, Suffolk Market Events said:“I am very excited by the opportunity that the Innovate Local initiative is bringing to new businesses. It can be overwhelming taking your first steps on a market, and this programme will provide the businesses with the support and guidance to get them off the ground.” In addition to the market stalls, the Innovate Local programme will be opening an innovation hub in Eye and a pop-up hub in Sudbury later this year. The Innovate Local Hubs will offer small business owners and entrepreneurs with access to a working space, mentoring programme as well as targeted business advice and training opportunities. The hubs are being delivered in partnership with the Innovation Labs and businesses using either of the hubs in Eye or Sudbury will be able to use Innovation Labs collaborative working space based in Stowmarket. Cllr Gerard Brewster, Mid Suffolk District Council cabinet member for economic growth said: “Through Innovate Local, businesses have a unique opportunity to drive their business forward with expert support and advice. With our experience of the success of the Innovation Labs in Stowmarket, I am delighted that we can now extend this offer to Eye and Sudbury.” The Innovate Local hubs will be based at Cross Street in Eye and in Borehamgate in Sudbury. Businesses interested in being part of Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s Innovate Local scheme should visit www.babergh. gov.uk or www.midsuffolk.gov.uk

JUST
Health is wealth.
Just Talk is an affordable counselling service where you can see a trainee counsellor in a safe and confidential environment. Although we are based in Sudbury Suffolk, we are able to offer counselling anywhere in the United Kingdom via Zoom. All donations can be made on our website and go to our bridge fund to provide free counselling to those who cannot afford to pay. At JustTalk we are working hard to meet the needs of all who need counselling, as quickly as possible. Many of our clients are subsidised through our Bridge Fund, which enables them to pay as little as £10 per session. However, as the number of people seeking help increases, our Bridge Fund is becoming depleted, putting this service at risk. By donating – either as an individual or perhaps as a part of your corporate, social or marketing activities, you will help us continue with our service: £10 – provides one free session £50 – provides five free sessions etc. By sponsoring a counselling session you would be giving an incredible gift to a person who very much needs it. ease fe Pl

Business Woman awards for Glenda and Sharon
JustTalk 2019 & its parent company ExploringU are delighted to announce that our CEO, Glenda D Roberts and Sharon Kendall, Psychotherapist & Manager have both been successful in the Influential Business Woman Awards 2021. Glenda as ‘Counselling Services Director of the Year 2021 (South East England) ‘and Sharon as ‘Most Influential Counselling & Psychotherapy Businesswoman (UK)’. This is a fantastic achievement for the Sudbury based company, which during the recent pandemic has continued to reach out and support those most in need. Their counselling service offers support, either face to face or on-line, with either fully qualified counsellors or student counsellors, in their final year of training. Clients are assessed and those who are not able to afford the full cost of a session are subsidised through a Bridge Fund, set up by the company, which means that clients can access counselling therapy for as little as £10 a session. In June alone, 25 clients were supported through this fund, ranging in age from 14-50years, men and women. The fund subsidised treatment by £600, which has meant that over 25 sessions were made available. ‘When I came to realise during lockdown that I was struggling mentally with past and present issues I decided to reach out to JustTalk2019 who I had heard had a Bridge Fund for people who have financial struggles to help them pay for their therapy. My assessment was booked that very week and I had my first virtual appointment the following week. I was astounded by how quickly it had all happened and how caring and nurturing everyone I had contact with had been. I am still having my therapy via zoom with a fantastic therapist who has been able to fit our sessions around my children and life in general and I am in a much better place due to this amazing organisation. Thank you so much JustTalk 2019 x’. Comments from a Bridge Fund client 2021 Those of us lucky enough to have secured a placement with JustTalk, have found an innovative forward looking organisation dedicated to offering affordable counselling with its team of student counsellors. I have not come across another organisation like this. The beauty of the JustTalk model, is that it is able to offer affordable counselling support to so many people, whilst giving some 20-30 student counsellors the opportunity to develop their counselling skills within a well organised and ethical structure. Comments from a student counsellor 2020 Roberts & Kendall’s Consultancy & Coaching In addition to their current business, Sharon and Glenda will be launching a new initiative at the end of September 2021, ‘Roberts & Kendall’s Consultancy & Coaching’. The purpose of this initiative will be to help trainee counsellors transition from being students to fully qualified counsellors. They bring over 20 years combined experience in the running of successful private practice as well as establishing and running ExploringU counselling, the JustTalk Campaign (charity) plus JustTalk2019, through which they have supported many trainee counsellor in their transition from trainee to qualified counsellor. Their expertise is second to none, as they continue to support many hundreds of clients throughout their work. I was happy to hear both Sharon and Glenda had won the “Inspiration award”. I personally have been supported/guided all throughout my training enabling me to be the best counsellor I can be. It is inspiring for me to see how at JustTalk2019 Glenda and Sharon have made counselling affordable to everyone, no-one gets turned away because they cannot afford it or have to wait for weeks on long waiting list’s. When people need help they get it and the process of change begins. Counselling transforms life’s. S J student counsellor 2021 The support I have received from both Glenda and Sharon during my placement with JustTalk2019 has been great. Both are very hands on and always willing to give time to talk through challenges and issues arising. They manage to do this while running a busy service, which retains its very personal and encouraging ethos. Comments from. SH Student counsellor 2021
